Now, here's Matt Jones.
Welcome into KSR.
This is Drew Franklin.
It is not Matt Jones.
I am filling in for Matt Jones and filling in for Ryan Lemon, who's a little bit under the weather today.
so he stayed home to let us drive the ship.
I have Billy R. Sports staying through after the pre-show hanging out,
and he'll be joining the discussion today.
We're going to bring Mario on the air.
I know everybody likes hearing from Mario,
and of course, Shannon, the dude, is in the Louisville studio.
Shannon, we're sponsored by T.J. Smith.
What is it? TJ's going to make us do?
Make them do? Make them do?
Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
That's right.
And as always, we'd like to hear from you on the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line
at 859-280-2287.
But we're going to get straight to that phone line.
because if I'm not mistaken, do we already have Matt Jones on the phone from Aspen, Colorado?
The birthday boy is on.
Happy birthday, Matt.
What's going on, fellas?
Thank you for stepping in.
I'm sitting here.
Happy birthday.
We got to sing for him.
We got to sing for him.
No, that's all right.
I don't need you.
I definitely don't need to hear Mario sing.
Thank you all.
I'm here looking at the Rocky Mountains.
and just one thing before we get going to all the listeners.
Everybody keep Brian in your thoughts today.
We don't totally know his situation.
So if you get a chance, just keep him in your thoughts.
And Drew, I know you agree on that.
Absolutely.
I started feeling a little sick last night and told us this morning he needed to rest up a little bit.
So we're going to give him as much times he needs and hoping get that figured out.
So we're all thinking of him and we'll be just fine without him.
It's good to have you on here.
on what number birthday is this?
Yeah, I mean, it depends on who you ask, right?
Like, it depends on who you're talking to, like what numerology system you're using.
But some people would say 46.
I'm not really going to accept that.
But yes, that's today.
And I'm here at our Aspen retreat.
We are reading, like, I've got four hours of discussions starting here in about 15 minutes.
So, you know, it's the kind of thing you want to do on your birthday, Shannon.
Just sit around, talk a little bit about Marx and Adam Smith and all the things I know you like to do.
Oh, yeah, that's what I do in my spare time.
Now, Max Duffy was on with this yesterday and said that you might have been involved in a play or something.
Was that, is that true?
Was there a play yesterday?
Yeah, so no, that's tomorrow.
There's this old Greek play, Antigone.
our group has to put a modern version of it on.
So we're actually not allowed to say what we do.
It has to be like secret.
So it's been weird with a bunch of other adults like create a play.
But you know, this may surprise you.
I'm the narrator.
So the radio guy, you know, they wanted me to do it.
But that's tomorrow is the play.
Normally we get together for your birthday.
Either do something at KS. Bar.
have a dinner or something. Is it a little weird being off in Colorado with your, I won't call
them your nerd friends, your play friends? Well, you can call them that. Your Shakespeare friends?
Yeah, there was a, there's a woman here whose birthday was yesterday. So they had a co-birthday
party for the two of us last night, which was nice. You know, they brought out, they brought out
bourbon and, you know, I didn't drink it, but they brought out for everybody else. They had
cake for us and sang. So, yeah, it's been a, it's been a good birthday. But no, it's,
It's different to be with strangers.
They're not strangers anymore, but people I don't know as well.
But it's a good group.
We're a very nerdy group.
It works out.
But I will say, you know, first week, college football is next week.
And nobody here wants to talk about it.
I wanted to ask you that.
I was going to say, is there any like Kentucky fans or maybe just sports fans in general of anything at all?
No?
Yeah, there's like, so there's a state legislator from Georgia here who's a big sports fan.
So he and I talk sports some.
but in general it's one of those things they'll go like
who who there was a guy at kentucky i've heard of what was his name and then i'll be like
john caliperi and they'll say no it's like patino i'm like that's their reference
30 years ago that's the reference point so yeah so i the sports talk has gone away a little bit
we haven't heard much of what the scene is like there you're not in aspen are you like
somewhere where you can still sneak away and get your diet coke are you completely off the grid
I'm in Bailey, Colorado at this resort that's absolutely amazing.
Like, it's, like, insanely nice.
It's got four or five big buildings.
Everybody has their own cabin.
But, like, we're the only people here, and we can't leave.
Now, there's a huge, like, we're in a huge, like, we're in the Rocky Mountains,
and you can go for walks, and they've got, like, a swimming pool, a sauna, a cold plunge.
They got all this stuff.
But, like, you can't just go to.
the store and get a Diet Coke. But they do have them, Shannon, for free. So I've just been, like,
drinking the hell out of it throughout the thing. Now, you said that you had to do a lot of reading
before this trip, and you told us that you didn't get all that reading done. But you said that
you said sometimes, though, they'll just call on you and ask what you think about it. So I need to know,
like, did you have to BS your way through an answer when you got called on at any point?
I haven't yet. I'm taking the strategy of the ones I've read, volunteer during that.
So they don't call you on. Great strategy.
I used to do the same thing.
Exactly.
So, you know, like today there's six readings.
I think I finished four.
So my goal is to like get my words out during that.
Then they can call somebody else during the two that I haven't finished.
Are you still filling the football around the corner, though, even though you're far away?
I know you'll be back for the pregame show.
Can't wait.
I mean, unlike when I went to Europe, I'm following everything online and looking forward to it.
I didn't understand.
I know Max probably talked about the punter decision.
but maybe you can tell me, Drew, I noticed on the depth chart, guys like Derek Jackson,
not even listed as a certain starter. Is that surprising? I mean, I haven't been around for you
all to talk about it, but they're like Alex Safari, not listed as a certain starter. Were you
surprised by that at all? There were a few oars that I think surprised people, but the punting
situation just has people up in arms. I mean, it's just disbelief around town that Leros from
South Africa isn't the punter, and they're going back to Wilson Berry.
Max even suggested that maybe he kicks it too far, which sounds crazy.
But Max himself couldn't believe it.
I mean, we've heard from him.
We've heard from people that have gone to the scrimages and said that the punter was the standout of everyone on the entire team.
And then Mark Stoops kind of threw us for a loop there on Monday.
Yeah, I don't understand that.
I don't get it.
I mean, I generally take the view that, like, you trust the coaches who've been at practice because we have not.
But that one surprises me.
I mean, I don't know why you bring in an FCS All-American.
And it's not like our punting was good last year.
Our punting was $106 in the SEC.
So the idea that you would bring the same guy back to do it makes almost no sense to me.
So when we play Southern Miss, hopefully we don't have to punt much.
But I am going to be kind of looking at that, Shannon, and seeing, you know, it's just an odd decision.
But we'll see.
I mean, ultimately, at least with punting, we'll know because it's not like you could hide whether or not the guy's doing well.
Yeah.
Max was very open about his opinion on that.
you know, kind of confused like the rest of us.
Max helped get him here, so I'm sure he's even more
frustrated. You know, you sell a kid
on coming and then he doesn't start.
Max also said, you know, we've got to stop having this
mentality of, okay, this is going to be a tough schedule
that we have this year. He said, you know,
if we're going to get to that next level, and I think
he picked, did he pick 10 wins
yesterday on the show, Drew,
for Kentucky this year?
Nine or 10? He went higher than anyone else.
But he was saying, you know, we've got to stop using this
schedule excuse and just realize
every year it's going to be tough.
and we've got to start beating these teams.
I understand that, and I'm not disagreeing with him.
It is interesting he picked that because, you know, last year he was pretty negative going into the seat.
He thought last year he picked us going seven and five, and then we did, which at the time was considered negative.
I understand what he's saying, but you also have to remember what I would say about Max is the same thing I would say about a lot of the young guys, men and women that talk online.
Like Max wasn't, you know, Max didn't follow UK football when we sucked, right?
So Max has always kind of known us as a team that could challenge for nine or ten.
But he's right.
I mean, we need to hope and want us to get to nine and ten.
The schedule is not an excuse because we're going to keep playing it.
At the same time, though, you know, there's going to be two or three teams, four teams in the SEC.
They're going to have four wins this year.
And I think it's going to be good if we're not one of them.
I don't think we will be.
But I still maintain.
You have seven wins.
That should be like an average year.
If you get to eight or nine, that's a pretty daggone good year.
Even though football is around the corner, it's not the biggest story in Lexington this week.
Are you sad that Dolly Parton is in town or was in town last night while you were out in Colorado?
I can't believe it.
I missed it.
In our discussion the other day, Shane, you would have been proud of me.
I quoted Dolly Part not once but twice during our discussion.
You did.
Yeah.
You wanted to Jolene reference?
No, I quoted Dolly Part lyrics twice.
So when I saw she was in Lexington with the governor, I couldn't believe it.
Was that one of her, like, was that her library thing she does at Dolly's library?
Is that what it was?
Yeah, that's exactly what it was.
Imagination Library.
So, yeah.
So I would have, if I'd been in town, I would have gone.
She's one of my heroes.
I saw her at Center College a few years ago.
So I'm sad I missed it.
Could you work again, like, maybe like a Snoop Dog reference at some point during
when you're talking today with the crew.
Yeah. I mean, like, yes.
All right, I'll tell you what.
I will try.
It's going to be, you know, today we read the Communist Manifesto and Adam Smith on capitalism.
It is going to be hard to work in Snoop Dogg.
Yeah.
If anyone has a suggestion on how to do it, I'll check the text machine, 7772, 7754.
You know, there is so much money in the LBC, but I don't know if that's going to fit into the conversation.
I feel like you could work in, like, drop it like it's hot somehow.
I mean, there's got to be a way to do that.
Yeah, you could do that.
We'll see if Adam Smith dropped it like it's hot.
I'm not sure if he did or not, but we'll see.
I hope they give time to celebrate your birthday today.
I know being a narrator of Socrates isn't exactly a big birthday party.
We wish you were here we could celebrate with you.
But on behalf of everyone looking at me, we got Billy, Mario, Shannon's talking to you.
A big happy birthday from the crew.
and we can't wait to see you when you get back.
Yeah, I will be there.
So I'll be there Saturday for the game.
I hope to see everybody come by KSR before the game.
We opened at 11 and we'll have the games at 745.
We'll be there at 3.30 for the pregame,
but there'll be people in and out of there all day.
Hope to have a couple special things happening during that day.
And then, you know, I'm sure you guys have talked about.
There's a special offer with draft kings.
So I hope everybody will stop by.
I'm looking forward to being back.
I get back really late.
on Friday night.
And I'll check in with you again before then this week.
And listen, everybody, keep Ryan in your thoughts, okay?
And these guys will kill it.
Drew, Shannon, enjoy yourself running the show, and I will see you later.
Yep, go get some cake and happy birthday.
All right, thank you.
All right.
Was that already a call of the day?
I think that is.
Is that our Don Franklin Auto call of the day?
Should we go ahead and do that, Billy?
We can check that one off the list?
I think so, yeah.
Let's mark it off the list.
We also have to get to the Whiskey Thief song of the day.
No Darius Rucker today, Shannon.
Ryan's not here.
We're going to take a day off.
I don't have to play to the crowd with Ryan not being here today.
So we'll make sure we throw in something else.
Who do you like, Drew?
Who's your favorite?
I'll come up with one before as the show goes on.
We also have our Kentucky-branded tweet of the day we'll get to.
If you want to text Ryan's text machine, tell him get to fill in better.
That one's 502-735-36-80.
So two text machines there.
We got a little thrown off today, guys.
I was in a dentist chair just a few minutes ago,
not even expecting to be here on time.
I didn't catch much of the pre-show.
We found out about Ryan this morning,
so we're a little thrown off.
Is everybody prepared?
Mario, you're going to yap with us today?
Yeah, I feel like I'm pretty prepared.
You know, I only do one hour of radio a day,
but you know what?
I think I can triple it today and help you guys out.
But we've already had some fun,
and in honor of Matt's birthday,
we'll carry on and do the same, I think.
Yeah, normally we'd have a lot of notes, a lot to talk about.
We kind of left that in Ryan's hands.
We're a little unprepared.
I'm still feeling a little of the effects from the dentist, but we'll get through this.
What did you get done?
Was it just a cavity filling?
Oh, no, no, no, no cavities here.
I take too good care of these.
Just regular cleaning.
It was a pretty standard procedure.
Got my, got my fluoride, you know, all that stuff.
I did hear that a UK-wide receiver had just been in there over at Justice Dental.
Shut up Justice Dental.
So at least me and Barry Brown going to see the same dentist, getting her teeth right.
Yeah, just getting ready for the season.
But we want to hear of it.
from you all, especially today, on the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line at 859-280-2287.
I want all of our callers to have a good Matt story.
Yeah.
We're going to turn this into a birthday party.
Mario, you said that like you've already got some.
So hang on to those.
We'll share ours throughout the show.
Billy, you got a few Matt stories.
Yes.
Yeah, I got a couple.
Good or bad.
If you want to roast him, you can.
Today, we'll let that happen on his 46th birthday.
Is that what we confirmed?
Ooh, 50's coming up.
50's not too far down the road.
Man.
I've got to be honest. I thought he was younger than that. I must have been looking at the Facebook number.
What's his Facebook number? He's been 29 for 20 years.
He's in your high school class. He's 29 on Facebook.
It depends what app you're looking at.
And I don't think you can change it. So like, I think he said it initially earlier.
No, that's not true. Don't tell me you can't change it. I guarantee you he doesn't want to change it.
Well, I wouldn't either.
He's 29, I guess. Just wherever you look. He's got a different age there.
And I believe Ryan had us scheduled to talk to Tom Hart being a Wednesday.
So I just check with Tom.
He's still going to join us for a segment at 1030.
So Shannon, we'll get him on the phone line.
So you got the crew of Drew, Shannon, Billy, oh, Billy and Mario.
We're going to add a little Tom Hart, and we'll get through this and have a fun day as we count down to football season.
This is KSR.
We'll be right back.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's just.
different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about
defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers
why he got the ball, like,
after you go through a training camp with that, I said,
you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,

What's up, guys?

Welcome back to Kentucky Sports Radio.
Drew Franklin here, sitting with Billy R. Sports Super Mario, and we have Shannon the
dude producing the show out of Louisville.
Give us a call at 859-280-2287.
We really want to hear from you today, whether you want to talk a little football or
you want to roast Matt Jones on his birthday.
Whatever you have to say, we'd love to take your calls and hear from you.
again, that's 859-2802-287.
Chaney, you already said there's a few people on there,
so let's just go and run through them and keep those lines free today.
Yeah, phone lines are full.
Let's go to Dylan.
Dylan, thanks for calling in.
What's up?
What's up, Drew?
How are you doing today, buddy?
I'm excellent now that I'm hearing from you.
What are you got for us?
So I actually was just calling because it was Matt's first day.
I wasn't planning on calling, but I just wanted to give Matt like a super big shout-out.
He sat down with me the other day at the IHeart Studios and did like a behind the scenes thing.
And on his birthday, I just wanted to call him and say, happy birthday and thank you.
And he kind of went into some stuff he doesn't normally go into on the radio and kind of got behind the scenes on his life and kind of his day to day life.
And on his birthday, I just wanted to call in and say thank you for him doing that.
I hung out, I got to hang out with Billy that day and just kind of testify to how awesome you guys are behind the scenes.
Yeah, thank you for calling in, Dylan.
I didn't place you there.
I just had a first name.
Now I know this is Dylan Ballard.
Yeah, you came into IHeart Studios and Matt sat down with you for a while.
Shout out the name of the podcast.
And if you want to tell us a little bit what you all got into, let us know.
What all happened?
Yeah, I normally don't, wouldn't do this.
I know you guys aren't big on like promotion stuff.
But the reason that I called me and Matt were texting last night and I kind of glad he's not on,
so I can brag on him.
The podcast is called Success Stories Unplugged.
Matt came on the show with me and sat down.
We did about an hour and 10 minutes and as busy as.
Matt, is there a couple times?
I can let you go.
And he's like, no, we're just having a great conversation.
And we actually went behind the scenes of Matt's rise to success.
And we talked about, like, people that are high functioning people in their fields,
just the day-to-day struggles that people don't see.
And the men actually got in and talked about some things on his raisings, his roots, his faith,
and just some other things on there.
And Matt retweeted about the recap of the whole episode.
There's some stuff that, like you said, not really radio topics that you can
kind of do on a podcast, so I won't get into those on the radio, but like, it was just, I knew
it was around his birthday, and he was busy about to travel. It just got back. So a huge birthday
shout out for him for willing to do that. And I think it was a really good time because he,
he said that the reason he kind of did it with me, you know, he gets asked to be on lots and
lots of shows. It was some topics because everybody just wants to ask him about sports or
asking him about wrestling or asking him about the Netflix. But it was a good opportunity for me and
Matt to talk about some things that, like, may help people who are struggling, or may help
people in their everyday life or people trying to get to the top or just to get to know a side
of Matt that you can't really bring up on a two-hour radio show with breaks and calls and things
like that.
And it was just a really great conversation.
And we've already had a ton of people reach out saying it's really encouraged them and help
them that we're struggling.
So I just huge shout out to Matt and do you guys for filling NY's gone this week.
But me and him were texting about it last night.
I've already some stories and testimonials of him going behind the scenes of his everyday life
and helping some folks out that may be struggling out there.
And that's called Success Stories Unplugged, right?
Is the name of your podcast?
Yep.
There you go.
And Matt put it out there.
So a huge shout out to Matt and happy birthday to him.
And I'll see you guys.
I'll probably see you guys some point this week.
But hopefully everybody has a great opening week.
And you guys have a blessed day.
All right.
Thanks for calling in.
Dylan.
We're looking forward to seeing you Saturday.
That's Dylan Ballard.
There's a lot of great work covering UK for Sea of Blue.
It's like the man's got like five jobs.
He preaches on Sunday.
ding he dabbles in real estate
business owner
what does he not do
you know Marr or you know Dylan Mario
is that man not just working around the clock
it's all over the place man
yes good to hear from him though
Shannon who's next on the phone line
before we go to the phone lines I got a little update on Ryan
he is he's resting he's sleeping
getting hopefully feeling better
but he's sleeping right now but this is
so Ryan Lemon listen to this
apparently right now and all night long
the music from his backyard
was turned all the way up
and it's still going right now as we speak, blasting in his backyard.
It's blasting.
The thing is they can't turn it off because you have to, like, I guess, be connected to his Wi-Fi in order to turn it off.
And we don't have his phone to turn it off.
So they have this music that's just blasting.
And I guess it's been blasting since, you know, he got ill last night and had to go to the doctor.
And it's been going all night long.
So it sounds like there's a party overruns, huh?
Yes.
It's been going on all night long and still going right now.
They can't turn off the music.
There's no way that you can't unplug something, just rip it out of the wall.
I'm just telling you the report that I got, you have to be connected to the Wi-Fi to turn it off.
So I guess Josiah or somebody has to come in and turn it off later on.
But it's going to be going for the next couple of hours at least.
I don't want to make light of Ryan's situation, but Billy, you mean on a Wednesday morning,
They're just blasting music on the Ryan cul-de-sac while he's under the weather.
You said you didn't want to hear Darius Rucker this morning.
Well, the people in that neighborhood have been hearing it for five, six hours at this point now.
That is truly the most Ryan Lemon thing I've heard.
That really is.
I'm sure his neighbors are loving that too, but it's good to hear from him.
Hopefully he'll have him back tomorrow.
All right.
Let's go to Mike.
Go ahead, Mike.
Yeah, this is Mike down in Madisonville, group.
Oh, yeah, go maroons.
Two questions.
Yeah, they're firing.
up two questions number one is Matt still using Mulligans and counting them in his golf game
seriously and number two you just mentioned about his religion and the family religion which
i understand but what does his mom or he think about him promoting promoting gambling
that's that for a while i mean i i can't answer for him on that one we appreciate the call mike
I guess since he's doing it,
that they're all good with it.
It's legal.
Big part of sports now.
It's legal.
You can't watch a game
without them working it into either the commercials
or the broadcast or the signage in the stadium.
So I guess he obviously
is cool that we do a podcast and promote it
all the time. It's about gambling in moderation.
And he does provide a disclaimer,
whether spoken fast
or the correct speed at sometimes.
But he does.
And I'm sure that Matt
would love to hear more of that.
Yeah.
Now, on the Mulligans, I haven't played with Matt in a while, but he likes a mulligan here in there, a couple of holes.
I can't get him on the course, though.
It's because you won't let him use Mulligans.
We're big USGA guys.
We like what they did with the rule book.
We like to play it down.
If we hit out of bounds, we like to take that extra stroke and re-tee as we're supposed to.
He just plays by a different set of rules.
Yep, yep.
And, you know, some guys will come in with like a ridiculous score of like 22, 23 under on scrambles.
He's not doing that.
He's a respectable 10 under.
So I think he does play by the rules.
but picking up puts is the thing that I've heard about him.
First time I played with him, there are four of us.
Three of us wrote our score down, and at the turn, we're like, where's yours?
And he said, oh, I keep it mind in my head.
And I think he had us all by one.
It's like, well, of course you have us by one.
If we're all writing them down as we go and they're in your head.
But always a good time golf with Matt.
We want to keep having more Matt's stories.
Matt's birthday wishes.
So give us a call here on KSR.
We'll be right back keeping this party going.
It's Drew, Billy, Mario, and Shannon the dude.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J.
He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back to KSR.
This is Drew Franklin filling in for Matt Jones and filling in for Ryan Lemon.
Got Shannon the dude, got Billio, got Mari, Mario.
And because it is a Wednesday, we also have Tom Hart.
He spent Wednesdays with us all summer.
So we thought we'd call Tom up this week before he comes to Lexington and check in with him before his football season gets really busy.
Tom, how's it going?
And welcome back to the airwaves.
Hold on. Did you just refer to Billy as Billio?
Billio, yeah. You sound very much like Ryan this morning.
I mean, like.
I found out I was hosting while I was in the dentist chair.
I have fluoride all in my mouth. I'm just trying to get through this show, Tom, to be honest with you.
Billio. Billio, kind of like Stevo.
You have, did you take any numbing agents this morning?
Because that would have been awesome, trying to host with a numb mouth.
No, but I found out.
I was hosting while I was there and Shannon texted me to order the laughing gas.
So I tried to get a little bit of that, but they wouldn't come off of it.
Just a routine cleaning.
Well, it was nice of Shannon to play some Billy Idol for Ryan coming back.
I'm sure Ryan is hyper dialed in this morning.
He's got nothing else going on.
I imagine that's what Ryan's backyard sounds like right now.
I don't know.
You probably didn't hear the segment before that, but Ryan left his house with the music
blasting in his backyard.
And he's not home right now to turn off the music.
and the only way you can turn it off
is if you can connect to the Wi-Fi.
So right now, his neighbors are probably listening
to Billy Idol and Darius Rucker.
Oh, that is awesome.
Yeah, yeah.
So what do we think about this weekend, Tom?
Cat, Southern Miss.
Yeah, Lexington.
Yeah, let's do it.
Maybe it's Swing by Buffalo Trace.
I don't know.
Let's make it fun.
I think of Southern Miss,
just to be a football nerd for a second,
it like Southern Miss in the 90s was a really good program.
And I'm not even talking about like the Brett Farf stuff.
Like Southern Miss in the 90s in early 2000s was, and it's not SEC caliber,
but they were on par with Memphis and Tulane and even East Carolina.
Now they've really fallen off over the last handful of years.
They made some questionable coaching hires.
They've been surpassed greatly from an economic standpoint.
point, their total, I was told their total athletic department budget is roughly half of what an SEC school makes from its TV deal alone.
So that is a fraction of what they've been.
So they've really, they've really fallen behind.
Now, they've got some skill guys, and they've got some guys can play.
You know, Tate Roderaker was at Florida State last year and played in the ACC championship game.
As quarterback, I think he'll be starting a quarterback.
back, you know, they got some Ole Miss
and Mississippi State guys sprinkled through the
defensive backfield and on the
offensive line. And then I was just going through
some stuff today. We're going to talk with
both coaches this
morning and this afternoon. But
Will Hall is their head coach and he was
coaching at West Georgia
back in, you know, 10
years ago, division two.
And he coached against a guy
West Alabama named
Tyree Kill. And yesterday
when he met with the media, Will Hall said,
that Barry on Brown is the best returner he's ever coached against
and noted that he coached against Tyree Kill.
So that is an incredible compliment.
It also leads me to believe they will not kick the ball anywhere near Barry on
Brown on Saturday night.
We thought all teams were done kicking it to Barry on Brown.
Then Louisville did it in the Governor's Cup at the end of the season last year.
So we're glad someone out there still does it.
We're not expecting a lot of it from Southern Miss.
You mentioned they've been slipping a little bit,
but we haven't forgotten Kentucky lost to.
Southern Miss in Lexington in 2016 and then almost lost in Hattiesburg,
Mississippi a year later.
That was a touchdown game.
Are you saying we don't have to go in with any fears of losing week one to an out-of-conference
opponent?
Well, I mean, I would never encourage anyone to overlook an opponent.
I just think in this day of what the budgets have become in this NIL world, that the
talent disparity is as likely as great as it's ever been between the two programs.
And I know it was less than a decade ago that Kentucky lost to the Southern Miss program.
It's just different now.
You know, they've been, they went down.
They kind of went down in conferences from CUSA to Sunbelt.
Although Sunbelt is a great football league.
But they've just been, they've been surpassed.
And, you know, there's not going to be much depth there.
They're going to be fired up.
And they recognize that it's an SEC opponent and a chance to make some headlines and come out with a key win.
they played a lot of SEC schools over the years.
But no, to be perfectly honest,
and I won't say this Saturday night on the broadcast,
I would not want it to come across disrespectful to Southern Miss,
and we'll wait and see if it's a game in the second half.
But I think given what Kentucky has coming up on its schedule in the very near future,
I mean, we know what South Carolina did against them in Lexington.
We know what Georgia has done against Kentucky over the years.
This is a let's get right.
and make sure we're in the right frame of mind
because we got a couple of major conference games
before the calendar turns out of September.
You mentioned you're about to talk to both head coaches coming up
to get ready to preview the game.
You know, it's your first one of this season.
You're back with your crew of Jordan and Cole.
What is it, year seven?
Did I see that?
Seven years with those guys?
How long it's been?
This is our eighth year.
Eighth, wow.
We're the longest tenured trio, maybe,
I think in all of college football, actually.
I know we are at ESPN. Fowler and Herbstreet have been together a little bit longer, but they've rotated through sideline reporters.
So, yeah, play-by-play analyst sideline, longest going at ESPN.
And I don't think anybody, I know nobody's CBS has been together as long as we have.
I don't think anybody as a trio has been together as long as we have at Fox either.
So, yeah, it helps.
I mean, like you guys know this, going to work with the same people every day.
It gives you a sense of comfort and security and you know what to expect for people.
Or you don't know what to expect, and sometimes you get called in from the dentist chair.
Well, congrats on having the year eight with those guys.
The fans, I know we're very excited.
You're our favorite bunch.
But I wanted to ask, you know, you got your routine now.
It's right in front of us.
You're talking to the coaches you said today.
But what's it look like getting ready for a game between now, Wednesday at 1040 and then the kickoff Saturday night?
What is on Tom Hart's plate in the days ahead?
what is on my plate so busy day today with calls and zooms and whatnot um i'm coming over there
coming up there tomorrow i'll go to practice um tomorrow afternoon Friday we've got some
you know some stuff planned to try and get some flavor around town um i'm going to try to leave
i'm going to try to leave the area with a bottle of pappy we can see if let's see if that can happen
There you go.
I believe in you.
Maybe, yeah, I think I can make it happen.
Maybe a steak dinner Friday night.
And then Jordan flies in Saturday after his morning show.
I think they're in, I should know this.
I'm pretty sure they're in Gainesville for SEC Nation this weekend.
Then we'll tee it up Saturday night.
Our game goes a little bit later than it used to.
You know, they moved all the start times back on the SEC network.
So 745 is, it doesn't sound like mostly.
But that can be a big difference from 730 when you're looking, you know,
you're looking to grab some wings or watch a fight post game as we have years past.
Yeah, that 15 minutes will go a long way in the Krogerfield parking lots, too.
I know some fans, they're excited for that extra 15 minutes before kickoff.
Are God.
Can I ask you a question?
Yeah, yeah, ask me all the questions you want.
I mean, how difficult is it for you?
Like, when did you finally make the transition to where Krofield was natural for you instead
of Commonwealth Stadium?
I was earlier than most.
I know some people still say Commonwealth.
I just as a former...
Your sellout. That's what you're saying.
No, listen, my first job was at Kroger.
I was a courtesy clerk making $5.10 an hour.
I just feel a loyalty to Kroger and that I should say their name.
If there were any other entity, maybe I'm still calling it Commonwealth,
but I just, I grew up in the Kroger farm system and I feel like I owe it to them.
They spent that money to call it that.
So I jumped in pretty early, even though it's, I know it's...
I know it's not everyone has even made that jump yet.
A lot of people still say Commonwealth and don't like it.
Tom.
I hope you heard that.
I hope you guys heard that.
He said courtesy clerk.
He wasn't even trusty enough to be a bagger.
Oh, no, no.
With the eggs and cans.
You stand over there.
If somebody wants to buy a lottery ticket, they can come to you.
Fun fact, the baggers are called courtesy clerks.
They just didn't think baggers sounded good.
So, no, I walked straight in there and was separating people's milk and bleach like I knew what I was doing.
You called Drew a sellout.
Now, can you work in Commonwealth Stadium into the broadcast instead of Kroger Field on Saturday?
Would you get in trouble for that?
Yeah, you sell out.
I could have if we didn't publicize it because now it seems intentional.
Then I would get an angry letter or phone call.
But, yeah.
Listen, I kept with it the entire first year.
I called a Commonwealth Stadium the entire first year, and I did get a couple of nudges like, you know,
I love the sports information people over there, and they're so nice to me.
And there was a couple of, hey, you know it's Kroger Field, right?
You know, very polite, like, dial it in, or else we're going to get in trouble.
Well, now you've got pilot at Tennessee.
I think Kentucky, they were just at the front of all this.
Now it seems all the stadiums have added a local grocery or gas station or something to their stadium.
I can't wait for the day we get Shannon the Dude Field.
Oh, let's go.
Well, Shannon the Dude Arena would be best, right?
Let's put some rock concerts in there and maybe, I don't know, a wrestling ring, and let's call it Shannon the Dude.
Historic Shannon the Dude Arena, just like Davis Arena.
Got a throw historic in front of it to make it seem more important.
You know, we do that.
You're not that old, number one.
And number two, your branding would lose all recognition because everyone would just shorten it to the dude.
Like, oh, it's not Shannon the dude arena.
Well, yeah, I'll meet you at the dude.
As long as they don't call it STD Arena, I think we'll be fine.
That's fair.
Yeah, there's the difference between, hey, let's do some fireball in the parking lot of the dude
versus let's do some fireball in the parking lot of STD.
Tom, I have to ask you.
I definitely have to ask you.
As you know, this is the time of the year where a lot of people are making their predictions
for, you know, the record of what Kentucky season is going to be.
And I hate to put you on the spot, but we can strictly keep this.
between me and you, what is Kentucky's record going to be this season?
Well, I am horrible at predicting games.
If I could predict games, I'd be living in Vegas in the penthouse suite.
All I know is when I look at his schedule, I look at what I consider to be swing games.
You know, not that you count losses, but I think Georgia and Texas, for example,
are going to be two very tall tasks to try and knock off those two teams, as they would be for
anybody in the country. So getting South Carolina at home is big. I think the Ole Miss game,
being an 11 a.m. start in Oxford is a huge advantage. And I think Auburn coming to town.
I think Auburn is going to be okay. I think they're better than they've been in years past.
So it's a six-win floor. It's more likely to be an eight-week.
in team and if you can pull off an upset or two, then you're in, you know, November is going
to start and you're in the college football playoff conversation. And I think that's what,
I think the goal for a lot of teams, not a stated goal, but I think fan bases will get so much
return out of their seasons if the calendar turns to November and you're sitting there with
two losses or fewer and you're thinking, okay, we're in this. And now all of a sudden,
that game in Knoxville is more important than it's ever been.
the game against Louisville is more important than it's ever been to try and crack that code and get into the playoff.
I think it's huge.
Tom, you mentioned that you're going to sit down with the coaches in preparation for this weekend,
and you do a lot of different games and a lot of different teams.
Did you ever meet a coach that was more personable than you thought he would be,
or did you ever hit it off with one in particular?
More personable.
It's really interesting.
I mean, we've done enough Kentucky games over the year.
especially when you pile up games within the same season.
It's always fun when you sit down to be in a big conference table over there
and Stoops walks in and he goes, well, you guys know everything about the team.
What are we going to talk about?
Like those are the most fun for me because now you're building a relationship
and you can get into the nuance of the most minute details.
We went in for a meeting one time and we told Josh Allen
that he was predicting his pass rush based on his footwork.
and he was completely unaware.
And so we had him walk through what his footwork looks like when he blitzes,
when he drops into coverage, when he plays the run,
and he said, I didn't realize it was that obvious.
I know he's changed his name since then,
but everybody knows what I'm talking about.
So, yeah, it's really enjoyable when you get to that point,
when you know it, when you don't have to ask about the big picture stuff,
or just let's just talk about the 2D, but I know who all the players are.
Let's get into the nitty-gritty of your team and your,
program and where you stand.
My favorite, though, by far is there were times, or at least one time I can remember
specifically, we're in Tuscaloosa, and much to the chagrin of the sports information
director who's trying to keep the trains running on time, we asked Sabin a question that got
him to stand up and go to the grease board and start diagramming plays.
And it was fascinating, right?
because that is something that from a motivational talk standpoint,
corporations would pay tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for.
Every coaching clinic in the world wants to see Nick Saban at a grease board.
And here we are in a tiny little meeting room with, you know,
four of us sitting around a table.
And he's diagramming why he still wants to be pro-style in the red zone versus no huddle uptempo.
It was great.
Well, Tom, thanks for joining our tiny little meeting room today.
We enjoyed hearing from you.
This will probably be the last Wednesday we have you for a while.
So thanks for doing one more before the season begins.
We're really looking forward to having you and your crew being our first broadcast crew for the first game coming up.
Can't wait to have you in Lexington.
I can't wait to get there.
Drew, do you still have some of that gritty stuff on your teeth?
Like you're still feeling it's a little bit perfectly rich.
That's the worst.
Is it coming through when I talk?
I just know the feeling.
I'm not anti-dentite.
I love going to the dentist.
My dentist just wanted to talk UK football the whole time too, Doc Thompson.
So I had a little football preview this morning.
You can't talk with somebody's fingers in your mouth.
Like, that is the hardest thing ever.
Like, you ask me questions, and my head is tilted back with a mouth full of saliva.
Like, I can't talk right now.
But we had to cover where we're staying in Austin and what we're going to see out of Bear on Brown this year.
So that's how my Dennis shrimp went.
But thanks for joining us today.
And like I said, we look forward to seeing you this weekend.
If you get into any bourbon, let me know.
I'll take a little pull off of whatever you end up with
and looking forward to see at Krogerfield
if not before.
All right, gentlemen.
My best of Ryan.
Hope he's feeling better.
All right.
Thank you, Tom.
See you, Tom.
See you again.
All right, that was the man, Tom Hart.
Nice enough to join us during his busy week
as he gets ready to pretty much just give up his life
to follow SEC football around the South.
But as I said, we're very excited that we get them in week one.
Billy, is there a better crew than Tom, Jordan, Cole?
Well, maybe Tom Leach and Jeff Bacorro
if you want to listen to the radio call.
That's true.
back in the studio. But if you're watching on TV, Tom does a great job with all the references and
excited for him to be back in Lexington. Yep. And we're excited to get back after this break. We have
some phone lines to get to and more Matt birthday celebrations. So stick with us. This is KSR.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped.
up in the chase, that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you

Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin.
And Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the
lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got to.
at the bar like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue of 42.
Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.

This segment is brought to us by our friends at Commonwealth Causes.
They have their monthly bourbon drawing coming up tomorrow night,
and now is your last chance to get a ticket.
The grand prize is a bottle of Weller Millennium.
You've seen that bottle.
It's one of the most insane bottles you can get, Billy.

but that's why if you're like us
and can't throw up to $20,000 to get one,
you enter this drawing.
I may have to.
It's got a display that lights up when you open it.
It's the rarest bottle of Weller made by Buffalo Trace
with only 2,000 in existence.
Second place is the new five-bottle Trace Prohibition Set.
Third place is the six bottle Weller Vertical
and much more. Get your tickets now by downloading the Commonwealth Causes app or by visiting them online at commonwealthcauses.org. Ticket sales in Thursday at 6 p.m. You've got until tomorrow at 6 to enter that. Play, support, win with Commonwealth Causes.
Shannon, we kept some of our callers on the line there, so let's go ahead and get to them before we get to the end of the hour. All right, let's go to Will. Hey, Will.
Morning, fellas. I hope Ryan gets to feeling better, and happy birthday to Matt. I've been wanting to call him for a while about this.
Sorry, my son and I drove down from Buffalo to Pittsburgh last year.
And we were in there for about three hours watching the live show and everything.
And we were in there for so long that the computer reset, when it was time to leave, they couldn't find my parking ticket.
And we stood there for about 15 minutes, and you guys had already kind of loaded up and everything.
You were ready to go.
I remember me as.
Yeah, Matt got out of the car, and he came back in.
He was trying to make sure that it wasn't a money issue.
and we told him that no, it was a computer issue, and they eventually just let me go.
But I thought that was super nice of Matt, you know.
He didn't have to do that.
He didn't have to come back and check on us.
I thought it was a really cool move by Matt.
And then we followed you guys out, and I got to see one of the famous U-turns in downtown Pittsburgh traffic.
Glad we got one for you.
Yeah, so I just want to call and tell that story.
