Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome back to Kentucky Sports Radio, Drew Franklin, with Shannon the dude, Billy, who I've nickname billio i think we'll just stick with that i kind of like that billio and mario here having a fun fun morning without matt and ryan wishing matt a happy birthday and uh hoping ryan gets to feel feeling better as he has today off uh i know it's football season in the bluegrass we're just a few days away from getting over to croger field slash commonwealth for that game against southern miss but i wanted to bring on jack pilgrim ksr's basketball beat writer and host of the sources say podcast for a few basketball updates because it's been a few news pieces around
Starting point is 00:03:28 that team as well. Do we have Jack on the line, Shannon? Yeah, he's there. What's up? Jack's here. Jack, what's up? Thanks for joining us. Yeah, I appreciate you guys having me. Yeah, busy times this week, namely with Jasper Johnson's recruiting coming up. I guess he's pushed that back to next week, but we'll go ahead and tap in with you to see how things are going with that. There's been a lot of shift towards Kentucky in the last week, some big updates, a lot of confidence, a lot of picks on the internet picking the cats. He announced that he will announce on September 5th at Woodford County High School. How are you feeling? And what's the latest you're hearing on what Jasper's thinking as he comes down the pipe for that final announcement?
Starting point is 00:04:06 Yeah, like a lot of people, you know, putting in the crystal ball picks and the RPMs, I feel really, really good about Kentucky's chances. I think Kentucky has always felt better about their chances to land Jasper than I think the general public has kind of led you to believe with it being kind of a just seen publicly as a Alabama, North Carolina head-to-head battle. with Kentucky kind of looming as a distant, distant third. I think they've always kind of liked that dark horse position where, you know, yes, they don't have the connection that he had with Matoats and Huber Davis
Starting point is 00:04:41 just because they haven't been around as long. They're coming in late and knew that they had to kind of make up some ground quickly. But at the end of the day, I think they kind of knew that there were so many ties in that family bringing them back to Lexington, keeping them in Lexington. and they kind of just felt that that pull as he got closer and closer to his decision date would kind of start growing stronger and stronger and make him go, man, that's going to be a little hard, you know, it sounds better and easier on paper to say, yeah, I'm going to go play for NATO. That sounds fun.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Or Hubert Davis, man, he's calling me every single day. That's a guy that I want to play for. The reality of actually going to do that, I think, has kind of, you know, weighed on him quite a bit in that family. So I think it's time crept forward and we've inched closer to this decision. I think that weight has been on Jasper's shoulders. And I think the local push, there have been some donors here locally on several fronts that have kind of added to the pressure of saying, hey, man, we're going to make it really, really, really hard for you to leave if that's what you ultimately want to do.
Starting point is 00:05:46 So all those things considered, I think Kentucky is sitting in a really, really good spot going in the next week. Well, if it pans out that way and he picks the cats, he'll join. Malachi Marino in the class and Pope will have gotten both Blue Chip hometown kids to stay home and play for Kentucky. What will that say as a statement for Mark Pope
Starting point is 00:06:06 and his recruiting as he just getting started as head coach Kentucky? And then what may be with other recruits in the class can that do? Just what do you think will be ahead if he's able to lock that down next week? Yeah, for starters, those are two really popular kids in the class. You know, Malachi Moreno is the number one center in the class
Starting point is 00:06:22 and a lot of kids want to play with him and Jasper Johnson. I mean, you know, kind of the Rob Billingham effect of last season. That's a kid that, you know, he's just popular with the next generation. Jasper does a lot of cool, fun, exciting things that, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:38 kind of translates well to Instagram and TikTok and, you know, all the social media platforms for the next generation of young rising hoopers. So it kind of adds to the cool factor for Mark Pope as he kind of lays out his recruiting big board and says, okay, now you have
Starting point is 00:06:54 dynamic guard to kind of anchor your back court and you have the number one center in high school basketball to kind of anchor the front court. Now all we need is just a couple more pieces to kind of fill the gaps. It puts them at a difficult spot now where they have to be more selective and say, you know, we're not just looking to add pieces as quickly as possible. We've got to find the right fit next to Jasper next to Malachi Marino. So it's going to they're going to have to be a little bit more selective and have some tough conversations about who is the right fit next to him? Is that a Braille Mullen's from Indiana? Is that a Tunday Esafu who's going to be taking an official visit here in the next
Starting point is 00:07:33 couple weeks? They have to be a little bit more selective now and then maybe swing for the fences with some really, really impressive four men that, you know, top 10 recruits in the country. That's going to be kind of the heavy hitter home run that Mark Pope still look in the land. There will still be some naysayers that say, well, that's great. You know, he can land a kid out of his back. backyard, you can land a kid from Georgetown, but can he land a surefire top 10 recruiting high
Starting point is 00:07:57 school basketball? That's going to be the next question that Pope has to answer, but definitely steps in the right direction if he's able to seal the deal next week. Let's talk about another kid out of Kentucky's backyard. Reed Shepard, we all know what Reed just went through. He's now going to be one of the rookies to watch this upcoming season in Houston. But just last week, he was back in Lexington. He kind of, you know, there was the Calipari fantasy camp for several years. It seems Reed has taken it over and you went to the was it the Reed Shepard fantasy experience? Yeah, I saw
Starting point is 00:08:25 some videos, true. Is that what we're calling that? Tell us what that was like and what Reed did coming back in town for a couple days and what all he put on for the fans and everyone there. Well, I officially hit my first three-pointer at Rupp Arena. So that was the star of the show is definitely that.
Starting point is 00:08:41 But, you know, I embarrassed myself on the grand stage. But it was a lot of fun, man. And just cool that Reed Shepherd wanted to make it bigger than just, hey, let's play basketball for a couple of days here and here back, back home in Lexington. Let's kind of make this my own thing. He had a faith day.
Starting point is 00:08:58 He wanted to do some community service and, you know, a business summit to just kind of be as well-rounded as possible. You got Tubby Smith coming back. Obviously, all the Shepard were there. Oscar Sheboy was there. It's just a really cool kind of all-around event for Reed to kind of show that, hey, you know, my home, my new home is in Houston. My original home is in London, Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:09:18 but Lexington will always have a place in my heart. It's my understanding he's going to keep coming back and wanting to do these youth outreach events and community service things that just extend beyond basketball. This is just a second home for him now. And talking to Jeff, I'm working on the story right now for KSR, this whole process just went so much faster than anybody imagined. Like they will tell you point-blank period.
Starting point is 00:09:43 They thought it was going to be a four-year journey for them wearing blue and white. but life happens and he becomes the number three draft pick making a, you know, signed a $45 million rookie contract. It happens. And now they just kind of have to navigate what life looks like, still wanting to be a wildcat, but not officially a wildcat, now a Houston Rocket. So they're kind of judging things just the same way we are, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:06 wanting to support him, but also selfishly wishing that he, we could have seen what, you know, sophomore, junior and senior year version of Reach Everett had looked like. He added a lot more, as you said, a lot of business stuff, their faith seminars. It was more than just a fantasy camp. But having seen several of cows in the past, was the basketball as is intense? Because at the cow fantasy camp, you had these old rich guys just going full speed, hurting themselves, getting treatments after games. Was the basketball as intense as it was when Caliperia was running the show? Yeah, and he brought some ringers in that actually played a high-level D-1 basketball.
Starting point is 00:10:43 So you go out there thinking, oh, man, I can just, you know, jog up and down the floor, knock down the shot here or there, get some easy putbacks and, you know, call it a day. But no, I walk out there and there's some dudes who actually hoop and play professionally in the past. You're like, well, I got to actually kind of, you know, lace these sneakers up a little bit tighter and tell them what I actually have. So it was tough. It was a lot different than I'm used to. But, you know, that's what happens when you have Reed Shepard.
Starting point is 00:11:13 He wants to throw you some curveballs when you're least expecting them. It was very cool for Reid to already be back. Hasn't even started his NBA career, really, in Houston. Already doing things with the fans back here. Before we move on and let you go, let's talk a little bit about the current team. They got to do some summer practicing. I think everyone saw they had a nice lake weekend just past weekend
Starting point is 00:11:33 and they built some homes in Perry County. Is there anything you're hearing out of practices on the basketball end? Have we heard anything new as far as any standouts or anything they put in? it seemed just in the practice clips. They're a lot further along than teams have been at this point in the year, already working on plays, whereas it used to be just kind of getting them together and meeting each other. But being so old with so many fifth-year seniors on this team,
Starting point is 00:11:55 seems to be pretty advanced in the process at this stage. Yeah, that's kind of the main war that comes out of the Joe Craft Center and Rupp Arena for the people that have seen this team play. They say for it to be July when we got to see them play against Lafamilia and some of these early, early practices, they're just so far and away advanced than you'd imagine because you don't have to deal with teaching the fundamental defense, teaching the, okay, here's how to, you know, do just the kind of the basic
Starting point is 00:12:27 elementary stuff that Coach Cal kind of had to do year after year that would push the development and, you know, that, you know, hands-on teaching well into November, December, January. These guys are seasoned bets. They've been there, done that. They know all of that. So you can kind of start taking those next steps earlier on. So, yeah, I think they're going to start out of the gates a lot hotter.
Starting point is 00:12:51 I think, you know, the Champions Classic is going to be a huge measuring stick for us because in the past we haven't seen this team up to their full potential going into that big high-profile matchup. For my money, I think they're going to be better positioned to win that game against Duke than maybe some of the teams of Kentucky Pass under John. Perry. So I think the system is exciting. The offense is exciting. They're going to shoot 35-3s a game. Get up, get the ball out and, you know, up in the front court in three seconds and fire away. And if you don't make the first one, get the rebound and launch up a second one. So it's going to be a
Starting point is 00:13:29 really fun, exciting team and style of play that, you know, kind of building off what we really liked about last year's group, you know, kind of the things that work with last year's group, I think Pope is going to really kind of double and triple down on that and kind of make that our new identity as a Kentucky basketball program. So all good things that are coming out of the Joe Craft Center in Rupp Arena thus far. Everyone check out Jack on the Sources Say podcast. Check them out over on KS Board. We're having a lot of fun conversations there. Hey, you can get 50% off right now with promo code kickoff 24.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Everyone go talk to Jack on KS board. But one thing you did with Sources Say recently was you went to Jimmy's Kentucky Roadshow, which is basically a Kentucky Museum here in town. Did your show there. I mean, that place has endless pieces of memorabilia and things from UK history. What was the coolest thing you saw while you were getting the tour from Jimmy over there last week? Oh, man. That's an impossible question because there are thousands upon thousands of things to see.
Starting point is 00:14:27 He's one of my favorite human beings on planet Earth, as good of a human as they come. But I think Tashon's Redeemed Team jersey, signed to Jimmy as my number one fan, I think it's got to be the cool. It's just the story behind the redeem team and what it meant for USA basketball. Maybe it's just my Olympic love talking and just kind of us coming out of this most recent run out in Paris. I think just seeing that with my own two eyes and knowing what the worldwide significance of what the redeemed team meant for USA basketball and the players on it, the Kobe's, the LeBrons and all that, seeing Tashon's Jersey there, from that run has got to be my personal favor. But man, there's the coolest story that I think in that entire place is Oscar Sheebois.
Starting point is 00:15:20 I don't know if you remember last season. Oscar's first year against the Milwaukee Bucks, he scored his first official bucket in the, his first points in the NBA. And that was actually Janice Ante Dacompo's 62-point game, and he went on a tirade after the game, not knowing where his game ball went. but it was actually because the Indiana Pacer snagged it and gave it to Oscar. So Oscar kind of put it in safekeeping at Jimmy's shop. And now he's with Utah Jazz and kind of a secondary story now.
Starting point is 00:15:51 But Jimmy was very happy to share it on our show. But that game ball that was meant to be Janice's 62 point ball is actually in there decorated as Oscar Sheway's first NBA point. So that's really cool that a guy that, you know, Janice being one of the all-time greats that having the all-time single-game scoring record for the Milwaukee Bucks is a pretty, pretty, pretty big deal. But forever commemorated now as Oscar Sheboy's first points in the NBA. That was a big NBA conflict. I remember when that happened in the brawl they almost had in the tunnel there.
Starting point is 00:16:23 I didn't realize that artifact was back here in Lexington. But thanks for joining us, Jack. It's nice talking a little basketball during football week. As I said, everyone check them out on the Sources Say podcast, Kentucky Sports Radio.com. we'll let you go back to probably being a dad and balancing website duties this afternoon. Appreciate you guys. Thank you. See you, Jack. That was Jack Pilgrim.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Man knows a little UK basketball there, Billy. He can play it too. Does a great job with KSR. I just have to think it's infuriating to cover recruiting to a degree. You must know that, Drew. I don't miss it. I change their mind probably the night before their decision sometimes, you know. That in these interviews they get, I do not miss that.
Starting point is 00:17:01 I have being 30 years old, DM and 15-year-old's like, hey, you didn't see my last DM, so here's my next DM, can you please interview? I just, I wasn't cut out for that lifestyle, but Jack and Zach, Jacob, everyone we have over there is doing a good job and getting on that beat. It's a lot of work to track recruiting. It's not just when there's a Jasper Johnson's commitment up coming up. You're interviewing these guys about their top 10. You know, it's a different beast.
Starting point is 00:17:25 And a lot of times you interview a player and you'll get two-word answers, right? Yeah, good. Not great talkers, that's for sure. But they all do great work. And we're going to keep doing great work here. We've got to get back to our Matt Jones stories. We haven't even told ours yet. I want to hear y'all.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Y'all's stories. That's what I want to hear. I have so many. I need to narrow it down what I'm going to share. We want to hear from the callers, too. They've already done a good job wishing Matt. Happy Birthday. That's Clark's Pumpand Shop phone line at 859-2-2-287.
Starting point is 00:17:50 We'll get to those phone lines when we come right back. This is KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the Internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying. And nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants. answer. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:40 And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kier Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:19:09 and we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:19:25 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels. of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about
Starting point is 00:19:50 defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player that. ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think
Starting point is 00:20:11 Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:20:26 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:20:50 This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue 42.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Ardano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please!
Starting point is 00:21:36 But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope I'm a Hippocrat. I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike! I'm a comedian! I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, and recommend some of the the most legally dubious advice known to man.
Starting point is 00:22:03 If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrat, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from a Hypocrat as part of the MyCultura podcast network available on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right. It is Kentucky Sports Radio, this segment sponsored by our friends at Shady Raise.

I already had some, but now I've got my mowing ones that are the color rush. I see the grass, the weeds pop up better, but they got me some stylish ones. I'm all the way through and through Shady Rays like the rest of you all.
Starting point is 00:23:23 But I guess we've been on hold a little bit with the callers. Let's go ahead and run through more of those, Shannon. if you got them ready. Let's go to Andy. Hey, Andy. Andy, what's up? Hey, Andy. What's up? What up? Guys, ready for this weekend coming up Friday, checking in to the hotel across the street. I can bounce over to the bar about any time I'm ready to go Saturday. That time of year again. Hold on. What time would you predict ready to go is for Andy and coming over to the bar? You think is that like a 2 p.m., 8 a.m.? right before the game? What does ready to go mean for Andy on game day? What would I predict?
Starting point is 00:24:01 No, when you're getting up. You said you're going to go to the bar when you're ready to go. We've got a long day. What is ready to go mean? I'm thinking about the time everybody starts showing up, about 1.30 or two. Okay. I wasn't sure. Sometimes you're the first one there.
Starting point is 00:24:14 I don't want to get going too early. I hope we do it outside because it's supposed to only be 81. Okay. We'll keep that in mind when we set up. But what else you got for us? I just want to, it's Matt, happy birthday and safe travels back from Colorado. Hope Ryan gets better. 100% for game day
Starting point is 00:24:33 and one less little little mini thing from that since his birthday you know it's going to be we know it's going to be a hell of a season if the first thing we hear the first sentence you hear Matt say at the KSR pregame show on Saturday
Starting point is 00:24:48 is and there was this one time at Dork Camp see you Saturday guys Thank Andy nice little American power reference for any of us 90s kids That's right Mario, you probably have no idea what he meant by saying that.
Starting point is 00:25:02 It's a good, good film. I showed that movie to my 16-year-old brother, and my mom was mad at me. Oh, why? Why would she be mad at you about that? I don't know. Just trying to educate the young man. Shannon Elizabeth, man. Shannon Elizabeth. I'll just leave it at that. Yep. Who's next, Shannon? Bill.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Other Shannon. Yes. Nadia. Bill, thanks for calling in. What's up, Bill? Hey, happy birthday, Matt, go catch. I got a question for Shannon. Go.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Songwriters and artists, do they not usually point out where they get the titles for their songs? No, I don't think so. Well, the only reason I'm asking, because I was watching an episode of Gunsmoke, 1970. Yeah. This old lady had a one-liner in there, and all she said was,
Starting point is 00:25:55 I've got everything I need and nothing that I don't. And what song is that from? Because I don't know what you're talking about. Graham. What? It's a Zach Brown. Zach Brown, okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Thank you. Okay. So you think that Zach Brown got that line from Gunsmoke? Well, it's the exact same line. Well, okay. Could be. Maybe you're on to something. Anything else, Bill?
Starting point is 00:26:24 No, that's all. Go-cats. I appreciate it. Go-cats to you, too, Bill. You never know what's going to be on the other end of the phone when you pick them up you know this guy talking about Zach Bryan and uh gunsmoke hey I was let you I was gonna let you all cook I didn't want to interrupt there sounds like you all are boys there connecting over that music um let's get to our own Matt stories
Starting point is 00:26:45 so you might have anybody want to volunteer to go first I go first since I'm the news I don't know if you want to I probably have the shortest story I'll go for I feel like no one has spent more time in a car or in a hotel with Matt Jones than me I could do hours, on top of hours, on top of hours of telling Matt's stories over the course of our many years of traveling. I just hit 15 years with KSR two weeks ago. Oh, well, congratulations. I know I don't want that as a congrats. I'm just really stressing that is a lot of Matt Jones for one person, but I'm still here, made it through it.
Starting point is 00:27:18 I'm going to share one we've told before, but it always comes to mind when I think of Matt being prime Matt. We're in Washington, D.C., our nation's capital. he and I were trying to do Hey Kentucky over at the Lincoln Memorial. We hop up there with Lincoln. We're yapping about whatever the current events are in Kentucky. Daniel Dunson, our cameraman, who we miss, he's there filming it. And someone comes over and tells us, hey, hey, hey, hey, turn the camera off. We have one of those bright lights, you know, official TV equipment.
Starting point is 00:27:45 Tell us we can't do it there. So we start, you know, typically Matt's not one to listen to authority. But in that case, we thought in D.C., where we are, we should listen. Let's shut down shop and just go for. a little walk. So we're walking and Matt's on his phone. Kind of maybe tech, at that time, probably texting Tomlin, the producer, whoever let him know what's going on and weren't able to do this. You know, whatever he's doing. Matt's looking at his phone. He likes to look at his phone.
Starting point is 00:28:08 And next thing, you know, Matt has just walked straight into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool that everyone knows famous. It's not small. It is the big pool that we've all seen. It's where they had the I Have a Dream. Smart of Luther King's I Have a Dream speech. If you're a fan of Forrest Gump, he gave a speech there. And, you know, And Gump, Jenny, like, runs into the water and runs through it. That's basically what Matt did, walking, looking down on his phone, straight into a monument in D.C. He's walking. Is he on his phone?
Starting point is 00:28:36 Yep, looking down on his phone? It's kind of, there's not a huge ledge, so he was safe, but, I mean, he got soaked. He just walked. Did you save him? Did you? Hey, Matt. Matt, watch out. We got our phones out to try to get a picture of video.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Shannon was there. He knows we're all. You know when Matt is walking with us, he has to be ahead of the pack, right? He has to be the first one. So we're all just watching them. like, okay, he's getting closer and closer to the water. All of a sudden, next thing you know, sure enough, he goes knee deep. He's got one pant leg for the rest of the night that is soaking wet.
Starting point is 00:29:06 It wasn't exactly warm, if I remember correctly. He's walking around with one wet leg. So he was like Ryan's wet socks that he was talking about yesterday. That was Matt. It was kind of dark. I'll give him a little bit. It's kind of dark, dark-ish. It was dark enough that we had the big light on for video, but it wasn't so dark
Starting point is 00:29:24 that you can't see the 2,000-foot body of water right in front of the monument. So that one always sticks out to me, Matt, some fun on our travels. That's a legendary story. I've heard that so many times just by other people in passing. I had to read and tell today. We'll come back with more. It seems like Mario is eager to get to one. Billio will have one and Shane and two.
Starting point is 00:29:42 Give us a call. This is KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. This is not Matt Jones. This is Drew Franklin.
Starting point is 00:29:57 If you're listening live, that's the sweet sounds of Noah Khan in the background singing Maine. I know it's no Darius Rucker, but that is going to be our whiskey thief song of the day today because I have been playing a lot of Noah Khan. Billy, you know Noah Khan? I don't. He headlined Railbird this past summer, so people around Kentucky should know him. But at the Franklin household, we're getting in the Noah Con mode because I just booked a trip to Maine. That's what I'm going to do for the by week, me and Abby. you're going up to Maine to do main things. I don't know what you're doing Maine.
Starting point is 00:30:25 Eat lobster. They got beer, right? Yeah, they got a beach. If you want to go to the beach, I just went to New Hampshire. Yeah, that's why I brought it up. I'm in the middle of planning this main trip. I've already got my rental car and my flights and a couple hotels, but I don't know really know what's going on up there. Just to enjoy a couple good lobster rolls. That was kind of what I was there to do. We were looking south to the beach, and then we thought we'd do something a little more unique with having a full week. We can do a beach anytime. There's beaches everywhere.
Starting point is 00:30:51 and then lobster rolls count on what sold me. Yeah. Yeah, it's a little bit better seafood than we get here in Lexington. Did you hike? I did. I'm not going to New Hampshire, but my understanding, they're close. Shannon and I did it on a road trip with Matt before. A little surprising how many mountains they got up there in New Hampshire.
Starting point is 00:31:06 So I don't know if it extends into Maine. It probably does, but we did plenty of hiking. And it's beautiful. That coastline up there is just really nice. We're going to drive Highway 1. I don't know. I'm learning all of this. I just know oysters, beer, leaves, and lobster.
Starting point is 00:31:20 I'm looking for it. Shannon and I went to Portland, Maine, with Matt and Ryan on one of our many adventures. Portland, we were there briefly, but we had some fun in Portland. Is that where we did karaoke with Tomlin? I think that was Maine, wasn't it? Was that Maine? It was that trip. I know we went to a brewery in Portland, and some older man next to us ended up being awesome,
Starting point is 00:31:42 and we just want to stay with him the whole time. That's my only memory. It's the brewery in Portland, and then we were out the next morning. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe it was new. It was one of those northeastern states. We went out and did karaoke one night. And Tomlin did an amazing version of,
Starting point is 00:31:56 was it David Lee Roth, Gigolo. I think was the song that he did. He tore it up in one of those northeastern states. Listen, Chris Tomlin, C.M. Tomlin. I used to write for the website. We're still his biggest fan. I didn't know he could karaoke the way he could karaoke until that trip. Tomlin also had a birthday recently,
Starting point is 00:32:14 so happy belated to Tomlin. As we're talking about driving around Maine, I'm sure. Shannon, you got any good Matt stories for this exercise? I think I've told this before, but, you know, and we were kind of talking about this on the pre-show today about being handy, or in our case, not handy at all when it comes to being able to hang a picture or build things. But one random weekday, I get a phone call from Matt, and he goes, hey, Shannon, do you know where I can find a screwdriver? I'm like, this cannot be real life. You are not really calling me and asking where to find a screwdriver. He lives in the highlands.
Starting point is 00:32:55 We've talked about this in Louisville. And I mean, that's a, you know, it's a neighborhood where you can find a hardware store right down the road. You know, if not, there's a Home Depot, not that far away, maybe a lows. He literally called me up, Mario, to ask where he could find a screwdriver. I'm like, I don't know. Like, you think I know where you're. you could find a screwdriver in the highlands? I mean, it's not hard.
Starting point is 00:33:18 You can just Google it. You can maybe knock on your neighbor's door and ask to borrow a screwdriver. But of all the people in his contact list, he thought that I was the one that would know where to find a screwdriver in the highlands. And I just thought that was the most random Matt thing of all time. I mean, do you think Matt would even know what to do with the screwdriver once he gets it? Do you think he knows the difference between a flathead and a fill of a screwdriver? Oh, no chance.
Starting point is 00:33:41 So what was your response? Did you play along? Because I feel like you're somebody who would play along. Maybe did you go with, no. I said, why are you calling me and asking me this? I was like, dude, go to a hardware store. There's plenty of hardware stores. Like right up the road, you live in Louisville.
Starting point is 00:33:57 You're not out in like the middle of nowhere. You can find a screwdriver. You can go to Walmart and get a screwdriver. It's right up the road. That was basically the conversation. Didn't he door dash batteries for his smoke alarm recently? He did. He did.
Starting point is 00:34:11 He did. Yeah. Doordast. the battery. There he is. Yeah. Could you imagine you're the DoorDash guy? You're the delivery guy and you're going, what kind of psychopath is door?
Starting point is 00:34:22 Why am I delivering double A batteries at midnight to this house in Louisville? But yeah, he did. So, you know, that's just, that's Matt. You never know what you're going to get. It's kind of like these calls. You never know what the calls will be like when you pick it up, you know? I don't know who's story is better so far. Drew's Matt's walking into the pond or or Shannon.
Starting point is 00:34:43 screwdrivers story. So I don't know who's the better. Well, what do you got, Mario? I mean, you've been around with us for a little bit now. For a little bit, Billy. I don't have that extensive stories of Matt. But one story that comes to mind, this is pretty recently. You know, we're going to Hopkinsville.
Starting point is 00:35:00 Billy, you weren't. You missed that one. It was a great, great, great fun trip. So me and Ryan, you know, we're going into Holiday Inn. We're about to check in. We're on the road. We can see the hotel. And the road is set up where there's no trees, there's no other cars.
Starting point is 00:35:17 You know, it's kind of flat. Like, you can see from a distance for about two, three, two or three miles, right? And we're turning into the holiday inn. And like I said, the road's very flat, not much on the road. And we recognize Matt Jones. He's, he's in his vehicle. He's coming right across from us. And Ryan rolls down his window to give a howdy.
Starting point is 00:35:38 Hey, man, what's going on? Like, you obviously want to say hi. You know, it's been a long trip from a. from Lexington. You just drove three and a half hours. We're happy to see Matt. We're happy to see Matt. And he rolls down his window.
Starting point is 00:35:49 And hey, Matt, hey, Matt. And Matt Jones' head is straight. And he's not looking whatsoever to his left at us. And he drives right past us. So that's my story. That's when we were headed to the pizza place, right? Yeah. Shannon and I got left behind on the trip.
Starting point is 00:36:06 We were a little late to the lobby. We were two minutes late and we got left. So you guys were supposed to be in the car. Okay, okay, it makes sense now. Yeah, he was on a mission. We were 120 seconds late. Two minutes is not a lot of grace. He said, you're not here.
Starting point is 00:36:21 He's leaving. 6.30 means 630, guys. You miss all the road trip fun because you have to stay back and produce. Yeah, I don't get much of the road trip fun. You know, Mama tequila's was a lot of fun with you guys and Matt ordering tequila shots for the girls at the table next to us. A lot of them was like 10 shots. There's like 10 of them.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Yeah, maybe not the best tequila, but it was a nice gesture. The server did say, do you want to get a good tequila? And he's like, oh, no, just give him well. Just give him the well. Well, that was a lot of fun. But one that sticks to mind was when I had my car dropped off at an auto detailing place on South Broadway. Okay. And so it is less than a mile away from KS Bar.
Starting point is 00:37:05 So I walked to KS Bar because I had a meeting with Matt after the show. You know, GM Billy's got some duties he's got to do. And I'm like, Matt, what are you doing after this? He's like, yeah, I'm driving downtown. I've got something to do. I'm like, that's great. That is the same direction where I've left my car. Can I jump in the car with you and you can drop me off at the auto detailing place?
Starting point is 00:37:25 He's like, no, I don't think so. What do you mean? It's just less than a mile down the road. He's like, yeah, I got a lot of stuff in my car. I'd have to move it. It's just not going to happen. And so I had to walk the mile down to the auto detailing place. and while I am walking, Drew, he passed me in the car.
Starting point is 00:37:45 Oh, no. While I am walking. Did he wavered? Did he give you the Mario treatment? He wasn't, no waiting. He does focus on the road, 10 and 2. His eyes are always right on the road in front of him. Just waiting for his next U-turn, I guess.
Starting point is 00:37:59 But while Matt's done a lot of great things and helped me get the KS. pre-show with Shannon, I wish I would have gotten a ride from him on that day. You know, it sounds like he just didn't want to take you, but at the same time, If you've ever been inside Matt's car, I could also understand that there was absolutely no room. But like absolutely no room? Like there's just everything on the chairs. Yeah, I mean, it's less than a mile. I didn't have to be, you know, completely buckled in for a road trip.
Starting point is 00:38:27 But nevertheless, the man was too busy for to give me a ride down the road. Poor Billy. You enjoyed a nice walk, though. I did. Not 50 miles, but I got my steps in that day. I feel like we're all roasting him pretty good. We should be a little nice here. I'll say we all have jobs because of Matt. We'll say that on his birthday.
Starting point is 00:38:45 So thank you to Matt for all of us getting to sit in these chairs and be in the IHeart studio yapping every morning. Absolutely. How about Matt? I was slinging ribs at Tony Romas when I got the call to be at KSR. Tony Roma isn't even there anymore, so who knows where I don't even know who that is. Yeah, we all have this platform because of Matt, even if he won't drive Billy down the road to get his car detailed or won't even bother looking at Mario and hopper.
Starting point is 00:39:09 Bill, you said you have a big thing coming up. Talking about jobs in this radio studio. Oh, yeah. Can you reveal who your special guest, what you all have come on? Yeah, I believe Travis Perry is going to be coming in the studio later to record a spot. A little funky rooster action, one of the newest coffee that's been sponsoring the KSR pre-show. So we're going to, I guess, workshop a couple commercials together later today. And excited to meet Travis.
Starting point is 00:39:35 I've heard a lot of great things from the all-time leading scorer in Kentucky high school basketball. basketball history. When you say he's coming in to record ads with you, like Ryan and I do that and you just hit record and then we talk and you send it. Is he recording the ad and you're saying this is a Billy thing too? Are you all actually doing a back and forth on this ad? I think we're supposed to be on it together. So it's not just, I think that we may do some with just Travis Perry, but I think there are another where it's going to be a little back and forth. So I don't think we have a script for that either. You know, sometimes we just get sent scripts and we read verbatim. This is just, you know, fill the 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:40:10 So we'll just talk about our love of funky rooster coffee today. Travis is going to get the whole KSR experience. Just coming in here and winging it. Just come in there and wing it. We'll edit, chop it all up. But, you know, I got a little unrealistic expectations for Travis after the whole Reed Shepherd thing last year. I mean, I kind of want him to light the world on fire.
Starting point is 00:40:28 But, you know, maybe we should temper those just a little bit with the talent that Kentucky's got coming in this year. I agree. He's going to play. And I think you'll have a lot of opportunities. He's going to be a lights out shooter. but we should not be putting that kind of pressure on him. The Reed freshman season was special.
Starting point is 00:40:42 Special. Best six man ever? And he never started. That's just, that is something we'll look back on and remember, I think, you know, 20 years from now, Mario. Yeah, incredible, incredible season he had. Well, when I heard Travis was coming in here to do an ad with you,
Starting point is 00:40:55 I wasn't sure if it was like the post game show, where Matt does the post game show, but it then goes on podcast as Matt and Billy do this. But you all are actually planned and coordinated to do this together. You know, while we're talking about Matt, he was a little frustrated. when I started doing that early on. Oh, I remember.
Starting point is 00:41:10 And then you just kept doing it. Well, yeah, and how I grew with KSR was I would fill in for Shannon and I would just talk, Mario. Like, they would just be talking about something. I'd say, yeah, I agree. And Matt would go, Billy, nobody asked you? But, you know, you just do it eventually long enough. And then you become a part of the show. Have you been enjoying Matt on season two of Fade This?
Starting point is 00:41:31 We've only done two episodes, but as we've said on here a few times, they have been very unique. absolutely. I don't know if he takes an ambient before he does those shows, but we do get a little ambient mad, I feel like. But he hasn't asked me to call a random town yet. And I am very thankful for that, because that was probably the most stressful part of my job last year was doing those FADD this podcast. Because, you know, you've got to get somebody on the line willing to talk about their business in about six to seven minutes or Matt's calling me back into the studio saying, where is it? Who do you got? Where is it at? So we get a little impatient on there. Pressure.
Starting point is 00:42:06 I started cheating a little bit in calling the Chamber of Commerce in each town, and they were willing, happy to talk. But after that, I had to start calling boutiques and random towns and stores. Well, I'm looking forward another year of that with you, and hopefully we get the guy from Purpose Driven Life on this year. Oh, yeah. God, what is his name? How do I not?
Starting point is 00:42:25 Rick Warren. Rick Warren. There you go. Change my life. Can't wait to talk to him. Well, we can't wait to talk to you all. We got one more segment left. I had a few news pieces to get to.
Starting point is 00:42:35 So maybe we'll just do a quick hitter session. Everybody will get their thoughts out immediately. We had some results yesterday to address. And Snoop came home. Snoop's back in the bluegrass. We got to talk about that too. So we'll be right back after this break. Last night, a blown call changed a game.

Starting point is 00:44:04 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.

His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows.
Starting point is 00:44:57 Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the play. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:45:25 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers while he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. you figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. Starting point is 00:47:31 Yeah. David Lay Rock. Just a juggler. Wow. We're going to cram a lot into this last segment. I want to start out with a shout out to our friends at Court physical therapy. Starting point is 00:48:11 That's K-O-R-T dot com. Let's clear these phone lines before we try to cram in any news topics. Who's up first, Shannon? All right, let's go to Glenn and Pennsylvania. Oh, Glenn, what's up? Thanks for calling in. Hey, man, what's going on? Hey, first off, happy birthday to Matt.
Starting point is 00:48:27 My first encounter with Matt was when I came to that show in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, when you all did your Pennsylvania, we're sitting on a street corner outside a little coffee shop. Yeah, we were sitting there, and my first impression was Matt be bopping around the corner, entering like Kramer off of Seinfeld. It was like, where's Matt? And then all of a sudden, here he is. but I had a similar story. You know, Matt, I had some stuff going on, and he just kind of reached out and said, hey, if you need anything, let me know.
Starting point is 00:49:05 But it was all good. Anyway, we just got back, my wife and I just got back from a road trip of the New England state. And if you get a chance, drive up Mount Washington. We've been there. Yeah. You drove up the, yes. I was white knuckling the whole time, man.
Starting point is 00:49:27 So if you get a chance, anybody gets a chance to do that, good time. Appreciate you all. Doing a great job. Thanks for calling in, Glenn. Appreciate the call. Good to hear from you. We enjoyed you coming up to our show. I think you caught a couple of them up there in the Northeast when we did that trip.
Starting point is 00:49:41 So good to hear from you again. Mount Washington was like the coldest place on the planet. That's where you guys did that shot for Hey, Kentucky, right? That, and then they had that Omni, that big white building on the hill by itself that looks like it's from the shining. Maybe it is that old hotel we popped in for a little bit. Yeah, that was cool too. Fun part of the trip. Who's up next?
Starting point is 00:49:59 Brandon. Brandon, thanks for calling in. Hey, what's up, man? I've got a story that's kind of in the spirit of Matt Jones today. So I'm from Yulberg County about 15 years ago. I was helping my buddy Sappie, who's a Louisville fan, moved to Etown, him and his wife. And I was helping him to assemble a desk. And I had stuff all over me.
Starting point is 00:50:19 I was like, hey, man, would you run out to my truck and get me a straight-head screwdriver? So he walks out and like 10 minutes later he comes back in is like, man, all you had out there was craftsman. Like his wife straight slapped him in the face. And I mean, it was like hilarious. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. That's a Louisville fan.
Starting point is 00:50:40 Sounds like one. Sounds like something Matt might say. And so he has something in common with Louisville fans. It looks like. One thing. That's all we're giving them. We appreciate the call. Thanks for calling and sharing that.
Starting point is 00:50:53 All right, thanks. All right, a couple news topics we didn't get to. They're very important. Snoop Dog came home. It was returned to the Bardstown Country Club. The stolen Snoop Dog. Ryan Lemon actually broke the story. He was sent pictures of Snoop.
Starting point is 00:51:08 This band of thieves, Billy. They mailed it back with a note. Didn't even show their faces or admit to anything, but at least it came home and we're calling off the manhunt. The search is over. I'm glad Snoop finally came home. They didn't show their faces, but they did plenty of that on the the camera footage there. I mean, they weren't hiding anything. But I'm glad that this is finally
Starting point is 00:51:26 over. We can finally rest. The note said, thanks for letting us borrow him. We couldn't keep up. He was ready to come home. It's good attempted humor, but that was actually theft that you committed. We don't condone that. Would you pursue any charges, Billy? Or you just, bygones be bygones here. Shannon and I talked about this on the pre-show. I think I'm fine with just getting my snoop back. But if there was a punishment for them, I think like community service or helping around golf course would probably be fair. We talked about it on this show. Lexington News covered it. Louisville News covered it. And Monday night, the TV station in Cincinnati covered it.
Starting point is 00:51:58 So if you're just Cincinnati watching this on the news, and then we learned they're from Ohio, yeah, I'd get uncomfortable and send that back too. Quite the publicity for the Bardistown Country Club, too. One more thing I want to get your thoughts on, Billy. What happened last night with volleyball? I know Nebraska's number two in the country. Kentucky's number nine. It was a tough matchup to start the season, but we went down in four sets, three to one.
Starting point is 00:52:18 Yeah, it was a tough night. Nebraska is really good. They were runner up last year. They returned all of their 11 starters from last year, or how many starters it is. And so they showed some resilience, though. They won that second set and battled back, but Nebraska was just too talented. It was cool to see Craig Skinner miced up for most of the game. You're going into the huddle, listening to them a little bit.
Starting point is 00:52:37 But unfortunately, they ended up with a loss. But they'll reopen Memorial Coliseum, I believe, on Friday. Yeah, Friday. They're calling it the soft opening. They play Northern Kentucky. So looking forward to getting them back on home soil, home court. but did lose that one last night. Brooklyn Delay for Kentucky had 19 kills, so that's good.
Starting point is 00:52:55 She's a star. I think she's only a sophomore or junior? Yep. Sophomore, I believe. Yeah, so good for her. But we're wrapping up the show here tomorrow. Hopefully we have Ryan. If not, we'll be okay because we're going to be joined by Dion Walker.
Starting point is 00:53:06 Oh, yeah. We're going to have a little football talk, and who better to talk football than the All-American on the team. So we're excited to hear from Dion Walker. Today, if you get hungry, go over to KS Bar and Grill for Wingsday. And, guys, I guess we had fun throwing this together on the fly. We wish Matt a happy birthday. Hope Ryan gets to feeling better. This was a fun two hours of KSR.
