Now, here's Matt Jones.
Welcome, everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, September the 16th.
I am Matt Jones here in Somerset or Burnside, Kentucky for the KSR Golf Scramble at Woodson Bend.
It is our third and final scramble of 2024, and it's in Somerset, and I have to tell you,
each of the scrambles I like for different reasons, I really like this one because it's probably
the one we get to interact with people the most, because I don't play, so I get to meet everybody
on 18 and looking forward to it today, and you give a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line,
859-280-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-724, and this edition is sponsored by the
T.J. Smith, Law, and you call T.J.L.
them pay it's a beautiful day we've been blessed right at these scrambles with great weather this year
perfect it is actually much cooler today than it was for me yesterday in green bay where i nearly
fell over sweating so much perfect day for this scramble it is awesome out here today and it is so
beautiful out here every time i come out here i'm like man this is one of the nicest hidden gems
in our state it's beautiful it's weather's great always have a great time i'm looking forward to it
it is mario thinks we're like this is the most mountains he's ever seen i said this is just the
edge of the mountains. Wait till you get deep, but it is beautiful out here. I love this place. I
stayed here yesterday, so I'm making a little weekend out of Woodson Bend. It's also one of my
favorite golf courses. It's a very cool golf course. Yeah, for those of you that ever played
Woodson Bend, it's a nice, it's just unique. It's quirky. If you've played a few times,
there's some shots, you can get an advantage on. You definitely are going to hit a few condos,
which is part of the experience. Yeah. Yeah, it's, that is, it's, it's very, it's very mountain
in the sense of there's, there's cut, like, you can cut through and you can take short cuts,
but you've got to know where they are in order to do it.
So the text machine is 772-744-5-254.
I'm sure we will have people call 859-2-80-22-87.
Ryan, you got to talk about this game a lot on the post-game show,
so I hope you're okay if I do a little.
I want you to.
So Kentucky loses 13 to 12.
You know, hey, my guys, if you don't mind, sir.
I watched the game in a casino in Milwaukee
and it was I would like a lot of people go
well it's going to be on in the background while I do other things
and then all of a sudden I'm screaming and jumping around like a wild man
thinking we're about to pull off maybe the biggest upset in Kentucky history
we were at a casino where most everyone else was there to watch the Canello fight
and one TV was on Kentucky.
Georgia, and I was losing it. So was Mario. My friend Adam Kulenbeck just happened to be in
Milwaukee. He's everywhere. The three of us were going nuts. You know, let's talk about what I think
are the overwhelming positives. It's going to be easy to talk about what we talked about last,
but the overwhelming positives. We took the number one team in the country that for four years
has only lost to one team in a regular season, Alabama, and we played them to the final play.
And not only do we play them to the final play, for a lot of the game, we were as good,
if not better. It was not fluky. As a matter of fact, no flukes were in our favor. That's true.
They fumbled it three times. We didn't recover any of them. We had a potential pick six. We didn't
get it. Actually, I'll be in the minority of Kentucky fans. I think they made the right call.
I don't think as much as I wish it was a pick six. I don't think it was. So we didn't get any flukes.
We played them straight up. We played them heads up. And we were right there. We lost,
but we were right there.
So I can't think that's anything but a positive in the grand scheme of things.
Second, I thought there was a chance they quit after what happened last week.
I thought there was a chance they could quit and the season would go completely off the rails.
If we lost like we did last year, 51 to 6, we're sitting here going, are we going to win three games this year?
Instead, they go out and fight.
It was one of the best crowds just on television.
Now, I wasn't there, but one of the best crowds I've seen.
I don't know if it was the fact that regular season ticket holders maybe gave their tickets away
and people who don't normally get to go.
But we were on the pregame show wondering, is it going to be 40% Georgia fans?
It wasn't.
I don't know what it was, maybe 10, but the Kentucky fans were loud.
And on television, it looked amazing.
It did.
It looked amazing.
For whatever reason, you know, we've talked about how the SEC Network and ESPN,
sometimes it doesn't feel like it's loud.
on ABC, it felt loud, it was cool with the night.
I don't think it could have looked better.
And then the defense played an offense that has run through college football
and did as well as anybody's ever done against.
You know, they've only scored under 20 points three times in the last five years
in the regular season, and they're all against us, which I think is crazy, but true.
So that's all the positives.
And overall, I'm going to tell you, I come out of it,
a lot more positive about this team in UK football than I did last week.
I am frustrated by the end.
I'm adamant.
I don't understand why they punted that ball.
I said it in the moment.
I tweeted it in the moment.
You cannot punt that ball.
You can't.
You just can't.
Numbers-wise, you can't.
The numbers are clear.
Your best chance is to go for it.
I'll explain why in some more detail in a minute.
I hated that.
I also hated that there was a fumble, and it looked like our guys had quit on the play.
Yeah.
And if they had just fallen on the ball, we would have had a chance to win, but I think they thought he was going out of bounds, and they quit on the play, and the ball just laid there.
Overall, I'm still positive.
I'm going to think about that decision not to punt for a long, or excuse me, to punt for a long time.
But I also think it's a positive day, Ryan, and I, you know, in the moment,
when you're frustrated as I was about the decision to punt,
it's easy to overlook the big picture, which is, you know,
we were right there with a chance to pull off.
There was a person on Twitter I saw when we were driving
that said this would be the biggest regular season upset in college football in 15 years.
And I actually think that might be true, and we were really close.
It's going to be interesting to see where our heads are at as a fan base
after Saturday. You're right. Do we
come out of a feeling a lot better about our team and what
they can do this season? But you're right, they were
that close of a program-changing
win that could have resonated for years and years and
years to beat Georgia that's had a
41-game winning streak, beat Kentucky, what, 14, 15 times in a row? And you had
them. If you told me before the game we were going to hold Georgia
to one touchdown and 13 points, I'm thinking
we win. You know, as bad as
the offense at times looked, and as
still, as I think our past protection on
offense is just brutal.
We ran it down their throats most of the game.
Demi Sumo.
He was awesome.
Like, how many tackles did he break?
How many times did he get hit and keep going?
I mean, our offense as a whole didn't look great,
but they could run it right down their throat.
Demi, I mean, there were lots of bright spots,
but Demi really shone.
That's a guy that was on the team last year.
Didn't get a lot of carries.
Kind of more thinking of him getting receptions.
Never thought of like a work horseback you could just hand it off to
over and over, but he was giving it to number one, Georgia.
I'm almost just as mad about them stop running the ball before the point.
That was tough.
The actual punt, I mean, it was second and eight.
You're looking at four down territory.
I wish they just kept handing it off to him because passing clearly wasn't working.
He was, I think he was the MVP for Kentucky, even the outcome one of their favor,
just because they went in there were two scholarship players in the back field against Georgia.
And played well.
And ran well.
All right, let's go over the specific decision making there at the end.
because I think Drew hit their two points.
Number one is the question of whether or not to punt.
I say this with all due respect to folks,
and I knew Mark was going to punt, but you do not punt there.
And you don't punt there.
It's a numbers game.
And let's just play out the scenarios.
If you go for it, it's fourth and eight,
you're going to have to throw in that situation.
Nick Rouse looked it up on throws we made of eight yards or more,
we were three for eight.
Let's just assume we have a three for eight chance,
which is about 37% chance of completing it.
There's also the possibility that he could scramble for a first down.
So let's say there's a 40% chance of making.
Will you all grant me?
Let's just say it's a 40% chance.
Okay.
60% chance you don't.
First of all, if you tell me before the game,
and by the way, if we get the first down, we're in field goal range.
Oh, yeah.
Now that doesn't mean he's going to make it, but we're in,
field goal range, and he's made four for four so far.
Yep.
If you had told me before the game, you have a 40% chance on one play to beat Georgia,
would we have taken it?
100%.
Everybody jump on that.
I'd do 14%.
Everybody would have taken it.
Everybody.
Now, let's look at what you have to do if you punt to win.
First of all, you'd love to pin them inside the 10, but our punter's not that great.
He's just not.
He averages 37 yards.
We end up getting it at what they get, the 16, 17, something like that.
Now, if you're going to win, you're going to have to stop them three and out.
I don't know what the percentage chance of that is, but let's give us the benefit of the doubt.
Let's say it's a 60% chance we stop them three out.
All right?
Their punter averaged 48 yards a punt.
He's one of the best in the country.
He's one of the best in the country.
So now take whatever yard line they're going to and then add 48 yards.
That probably gets us the ball at the 28 or 30, which means we need to go 30 to 35 yards with probably a minute left.
If you don't believe you can go forth and A, what makes you think you're going to get 35 yards?
So you're going to have to, A, stop them on a three and out, and then B, go go.
get 35 yards.
And you're not going to be able to run the ball because you're not going to have any time
outs, which means you're going to have to throw the whole time.
Give me the fourth and eight, Drew.
I mean, I'd rather have that choice.
I want to talk about the decision on second and eight in a minute.
But even with it fourth and eight, it's a no, and you're playing the number one team in
the country.
You got nothing to lose.
You got nothing to lose.
You got to go.
That's the big thing.
It's Stu's mentality.
If you're playing a vanity, okay, I'll hear you out on punt-it-played defense.
This is Georgia.
No one expected you to even be in this moment.
Let's gamble a bit.
Let's go for it.
You don't get these opportunities very often.
Have some confidence in your team and see what happens.
It kind of felt like a surrender there, which, you know, that's just kind of the brand of football he plays.
He's not gambling much.
And that's what he's going to do.
He said after the game, I don't regret it one bit.
And ultimately, there's so much about what Mark's done in this program I respect.
it is the fact his playing style is why we were in that game.
His recruiting mentality is why we're in that game.
The toughness he instills is why we're in that game.
But at the end of the day, 90% of how he coaches, I agree.
But the last 10% is a big 10% and we're not good at it.
He's not aggressive enough in the moment.
and he's also, everybody's got strengths and weaknesses.
Stoops' biggest weakness is time management.
And it's always been like that.
Let me give you a small example that doesn't matter,
but let me just give you an example.
I want you to go back and look.
There's two minutes and eight seconds left on the clock,
and Georgia has the ball.
Georgia has the ball.
Kentucky lets the ball.
the clock run out to the two-minute warning.
And then after the play, they call their final timeout at 152.
In the casino, when it gets the 208, you know what I'm screaming?
Call time out.
Because if you call it at 208, then you get the two-minute warning at two minutes.
Guess what you just did by doing that?
You saved eight seconds.
You would have saved eight seconds.
He let it run to the two-minute warning, then calls the time out after, and he cost us eight seconds.
Now, we weren't going to win, but at the end of the game, that eight seconds, we would have had 27 seconds at the end instead of 19 seconds.
It's a little thing.
I don't think anybody else has mentioned it.
But you cost yourself eight seconds by letting it run.
Those are little things, Drew, that we always do.
always like and it's because they just don't have the person on there the math person whose only job
is to sit there and look at the clock and that that bothers me i'm i think i'm just as mad or even
more mad that they weren't aggressive before the half for that same thing happened it's true
he broke a run he had a beautiful spin move hit the circle button on him when he goes down there's
19 seconds left they didn't call a timeout till 15 seconds i mean it's four seconds yeah that just ran
It's four seconds.
And a lot of people thought with nine seconds, I believe it was it's worth throwing one up to Dane.
One, say, don't get this intercepted.
Dane go up and get it.
But at least take one shot at the end.
I was okay with that one.
And the reason I was okay with him not doing is we didn't have a timeout if he gets.
And if he gets sacked.
You have to say, Brock, you're rolling out.
No scenario are you going down.
I don't know if I trust him.
I just don't.
I mean, if you had called that timeout four seconds earlier and it's 13 instead of nine,
then that scenario is a woman.
It's just another example of they were wasting time in a critical situation.
The end of the first half didn't bother me as much because I thought going into halftime with the lead is good.
But I understand there are people who agree with you, too.
It's just that answer to get some shots.
But I don't want to overlook the overall, which is I think this was an amazing performance.
And the staff deserves a lot of credit.
And part of me wants to say to Mark, if you had just gone for it, this would have been a –
Like, he made the decision that led people to almost overlook what had happened the rest of the game.
Do you think there's any fan run that would have been upset at them for going for?
No.
Anybody.
Would any of you all been upset for them going for?
No.
I think if they go for it and don't get it, first of all, you still have a chance.
Remember, they got those 30 yards in two plays.
You still had a chance.
But I also think people would have said, well, you know what?
We left it all on the field.
And ultimately, that's what I wish they had done.
You know, Mark Stoops knows more about football and his little pinky than we all know combined.
But the fact that they didn't at least take a shot against the team that nobody's been able to beat.
Nobody's come close to beating them, but Alabama, for crying out loud.
Why not take a shot?
And, you know, after the game, he said if it was fourth and three years, fourth and closer.
He said if it was fourth and six.
That's two yards.
For fourth and six.
you're going to have to throw it as well, so why not for the night?
You know, you mentioned all your scenarios, too.
If you do throw, you got a chance for a PI, you know, even that play right before halftime.
Look at the Bengals Chiefs game.
That's right.
You have a chance for a PI there at the end as well.
859-28027.
I want to talk about the thing Drew talked about, about the play calling there at the end.
And we'll do a lot more.
We're here in Somerset.
Second hour, I'm going to tell you a little bit about Mario on my trip to Green Bay.
we had quite an experience one night
that I think is that people will like.
We'll be right back.

One person writes, Matt, I totally disagree with you on the interception.
You can't overturn that.
Should have been a pick six.
Here's my only argument why I don't think it is.
One of two things happened.
Either it hits the ground, which it's incomplete.
Yep.
If you think he caught it, which I think is the second thing, then he's down.
So like he's either down or it's incomplete.
The only way it's a pick six is if he's going to the ground, it doesn't hit the ground, and he's juggling it.
I don't know how you can look at that and think that's what it is.
I wish it was, but you would have to say it didn't hit the ground, he didn't catch it,
But it was still moving in his hands.
And Drew, I just don't see how you can see that from the video.
Yeah, you'd almost need it to just bounce off his hand that's flat on the ground,
kind of like he's scooping it up.
But since they did call it the way we wanted in real time,
I was hoping they wouldn't be able to overturn it because that place was on fire.
That would have been a moment we talk about decades.
I've had people say to me that were there.
Obviously, I wasn't there.
That they think that was the loudest moment in Krogerfield history.
Was that, was that?
I don't know because I wasn't there.
But the spontaneous excitement rhyme was as loud as they can ever remember.
For a couple moments there, we all believe we all bought in that we're going to beat Georgia.
We all thought about it.
But for that play right there, man, again, the ball just did not bounce Kentucky's way for the second game in a row.
Second game in a row, yeah.
You stay going into that game, to beat Georgia, you need a crazy turnover.
And that would have been the point.
And then when it happened, you're like, oh, my goodness.
There it is.
But nope, ripped right from us.
All right, let's talk about what you said.
Second night.
You have the ball.
My view is, and again, I don't say this to be rude to Mark Stoops,
but I don't think they think two and three plays ahead.
I just don't think they do.
And I think you have to think, okay, we're going for this on fourth down,
no matter what, and then you make play calls like that.
And I think you probably run at least once, Drew.
Now, I'm not going to crush Bush Hamden because I think he actually called a great game.
You know, whatever you want to say about how good our offensive,
or not. He called a game that had us have a chance to win. But I do think they messed up by not
running on at least one of those two plays. Yeah, surprisingly, Demi was getting downhill, running on
them. The line was getting some good holes. Hamden, at least earlier in the game, he kind of, you know,
they couldn't do anything the week before. Everything got short. It's a little more east and west,
throwing out, not deep down the field, not vertical, because they weren't getting vertical against
Georgia. So I like that he kind of worked that in, especially in the first half, to get Van derriff,
at least get some completions and some confidence going.
Stoop said something like in the last, and this is an amazing stat,
that something like in the last five years,
there have only been like 11 passes over 20 yards against Georgia's defense.
It was some crazy number like they're in the red zone.
It was some crazy number.
But still, I wish they had done that.
But overall, I think Brad White and Bush Hamman and Stoops for the pregame,
I think the coaches had that team about,
as well prepared as you could have. I'm with you. I thought there might be a scenario where they
quit and the season is thrown away. I said this on our rapid reaction. You don't have moral
victories, but I felt a little bit of some confidence going forward out of that game. Well, there's a
guy here, Ryan, who said it just makes me more frustrated about South Carolina. Because imagine if
you had beaten South Carolina and then had that game, we'd be sitting here going, who knows, maybe,
you know, the playoffs. We'd be unbearable. I'm glad you said that about Hamden because I think
they really kind of, he kind of adjusted his scheme on the fly because we were running the ball
so well against Georgia. And if you do run it a couple times in that scenario, fourth and two is a lot
more manageable than fourth and eight. Exactly. You know? Let me, how do we have an offensive line
that is so good at run blocking and so terrible at pass blocking? Have you ever seen one that's
more, I mean, we've run the ball, we ran the ball downhill on South Carolina. Why is it that
we are able to, I mean, people who are offensive linemen might be able to, I mean, people who are offensive
lineman might be able to tell me, but how is it we are so good running downhill and we can't
pass protect at all?
I don't know, but if you had told me two weeks ago, you know, we have this team we've been
so excited about with Dane, Barron, Brown, Macklin, then you have practically your whole
backfields out.
If you had told me against number one Georgia or running it down their throat and haven't found
a passing game at all, then, you know, it seems a little upside down with how we thought
this would go.
Big shout out, though, to that defense.
Oh, my goodness.
I mean, Kentucky's defense.
were awesome they were awesome i mean they were awesome one again like south carolina they had one
really good drive but besides that kentucky's defense when when brock fumbled it to hold them to
a field goal right there when it felt like all right well that's the game yes that was i mean you
got to give that defense credit that was george's i think first trip on our side of the field was
that fumble and zion childers i think set the tone early man he had a couple big hits knocked down a pass
He had like 11 or 13
tackles. He had like some crazy amount of
tackles for loss early in the game.
I'd set the tone, I think, for the deep end of the game.
I'd set the tone, I think, everybody really got fired up after that
what he did.
Ty Bryant made a huge tackle.
All he did.
Safety stepped up. They kind of got a slow start.
Deon Walker had a double team on every single
play. And a lot of the guy, you know,
his numbers at the end of the year
are probably not going to be what people,
but like, when they watch the tape
at the draft and they see how that dude is
taking up two blockers on every that's part of the reason you know we were able to get to so much
pressure at times was because of him yeah he's just not a position you're going to see you show up
in the in the box score much but he takes up so much attention on that line and eats up blockers
i mean we haven't seen anyone like him did you think it was targeting that was target oh definitely
in that damn face mask yeah and yeah the how was that a crazy thing i mean that was it off
his head yeah and then it was on us i don't understand that all right we'll take your calls be right

Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio here at the KSR Golf Scramble.
20 teams playing here at Woodson Bend today should be fun.
There's a deer. Look at those deer out there in the middle of the course.
Mario wanted to see some.
Mario, we want to see some deer? There you go. Look at that out there.
I think that's the first deal.
Can I tell you there's never been anyone more excited?
about anything that Mario's seen windmills and corn for the first time.
And now dear.
He had never seen a windmill and he had never seen corn until our drive up there.
And he got crazy excited about the corn and windmills.
I've never, I mean, I didn't think corn could be exciting for people, Drew,
but he was excited about the corn and windmills.
That's usually a joke you make when you make that drive about all the corn and windmills.
You're telling you, Mario, actually had an appreciation for the scenery.
He was excited about it.
He'd never seen it before.
You know, I grew up in Indiana.
I'm all in on the corn.
But the windmill, you see it for the first time.
It's quite a sight to see because it's so flat, you just go on forever and ever and ever up there.
One person writes, Matt, the reason we're better at run blocking is it's the Stoops mentality.
Hit them in the face and move, whereas it takes more athleticism with the pass blocking and quick feet.
That's probably right, honestly.
Make sense.
I loved another player that stepped up as Margus Cox, the 5.1, we improved on that.
He's better.
He's better.
A lot of that, Demi and Wilcox deserve a lot of credit, too, because they were getting a lot of yards after they took the baseball.
They broke a lot of time.
I'd be interested to see how many yards after the hit they had because they took a lot of.
They really did.
It reminded me of Benny a little bit the way he would sort of take those hits and go.
You got to one.
Demi had that spin move.
I didn't know he had that.
That's true.
That spin move was nice.
Yeah.
Good.
All right.
So let me ask you, before we get the phones, how do you feel going forward?
Like, okay, we're going to beat Ohio.
We're going to be two and two.
Do you feel like when we go to Ole Miss, we have a shot?
I'm back on board after Saturday.
I don't know if they can beat Ole Miss down there,
but they're going to beat at Florida, Auburn and home.
Florida's falling apart.
Auburn's not good.
Vandy loses to Georgia State.
The path to six wins is now completely lined up.
But then you have Louisville and the top four out of five teams.
in America, so that's what you got, or three out of four teams in America.
The offense still has a ways to go, need to get guys healthy, but the defense that showed
up Saturday, they'll be able to play with just about anyone like that.
We're going to beat one of those teams.
Texas and Tennessee look.
We're going to beat one of those teams that I think, I'm saying Ole Miss.
It's 11 a.m.
It's 11 a.m.
They haven't played anyone yet.
You know, I'm not going to like, don't put me online saying it because I don't want to listen
to the fans of those, but I kind of, I, kind of.
we're going to steal one.
It's hard for me to see us steal in Texas or Tennessee.
So I feel like if we're going to steal one,
Ole Miss is the one.
You know, we didn't get any votes in the top 25,
but we made an impact because we pulled Georgia down.
George is the first number one team.
What is it?
There's some stat.
They're the first one in like 20 years to win a road conference game
and then go down.
Go down.
And that was because of the way we play.
We've got to find a way to get the ball in the end zone.
I mean, eight quarters of the SEC and we still have not scored a touchdown.
That's not good.
By the way, do you feel like you can judge Brock yet?
I still don't.
I still don't know.
I mean, I love his toughness and I love how he runs.
I still don't feel like I know how good he is because I still don't know that he gets a chance, you know?
Yeah, I have some concerns and criticisms, but it's been a small sample size.
I mean, he seems to lose his composure pretty quickly and won a tuck and run.
But at the same time, if you saw what South Carolina was doing,
and then you're playing against number one Georgia.
It's hard to say that's just definitively what he is.
He's a tough kid, though.
I mean, you got to give him that.
I mean, he got that one first down where he dove head first,
and I went, but he got it, and we needed it on the play.
It was a third and long.
You know, I think he played better than maybe you've expected
because they were plans for bring Wimson in.
I mean, they thought they were going to play Wimson.
He didn't play at all because I think of what Van de Griff was able to do on Saturday.
We just have to get better at protecting.
Luckily, we won't see a defensive line like those we've seen,
until Tennessee and Texas.
So hopefully he will have a chance to get better.
All right.
Who's up first, Shannon?
Preacher.
Preacher, how are you?
Hey, I'm doing good today.
I've got a compliment and a criticism that I haven't heard yet.
Okay.
Compliment is I thought they showed up.
I'm very proud.
Like you said, I thought there was a chance they may be lay down.
Bride receivers, I give them credit.
Don't get much attention the week before.
It's going to be hard to come out and be motivated.
but they seem to show up and even lack of targets, they still do their job.
But my criticism, can we catch a punt?
We just look, bounce, bounce.
We look seriously.
That last month before we drove.
Well, I think that last punt, though, preacher, I think was a shank.
I think we got unlucky on that Georgia punt you're talking about.
I think he shanked it and then it just took a great bounce and rolled.
But in general, you're right.
but I think that last one was a little bit unlucky on our part.
That's just hidden yards in a ballgame.
We're talking about going on fourth and eight from the 50.
You know, if catch the punt, that's 15 yards.
We're down at the 35 and we could punt it.
You're exactly right.
You're exactly right.
I appreciate the call.
Alex Rayner, by the way, does he break the KSR curse?
Comes on our show Friday and then nails four,
including an all-time record for longest one in school history.
Alex, I was 100% confident if we got that first down and we were 55 in.
Drew, I was like, he's going to make it.
I said, if we give him a shot, he will make it.
I was hoping he'd get that chance.
He's from the state of Georgia.
He said already had a great game.
He was the first kicker in school history to hit two over 50 in addition to having the longest ever.
So I wanted him to get one more opportunity.
And I was going to have faith pretty close to anything.
I mean, within reason, not 60, but if you had him even at 50, I was ready to see him.
Because he wasn't just making them.
He was splitting the uprights.
Like, he was, I felt good if we gave him a shot.
Let's put, we've got to pull back the curtain for just a second.
Max told us that if they get a long field go like that, they may go with the other guy.
Yeah, well, they can't do that now.
Alex was on the show on Friday, and you flat out ask him, how long?
So let me ask you a question, because I can't remember.
Did he tell me that about having more leg on the air or off the air?
I think on the air.
We said, what's your business?
Did he say that on the air?
Yeah.
Because I asked him, I said, do you have more leg than we've seen?
And he said yes with a confidence.
I couldn't remember if he said that on the air or off here.
He said, I'll make whatever they need me to make.
That's right.
Yeah.
That's why it's really interesting how we thought maybe this other guy was going to be the long field go guy.
And the way you talked to him on the air on Friday, he felt like he was confident enough to make it.
And Stubes gave him a 55-yarder.
I mean, Stubes doesn't let guys kick that length usually, and he gave it to him.
Early in the game and confidently.
You wouldn't want to give Georgia the ball at that spot if he misses that.
Yes.
His soup showed a lot of confidence to him.
And that went, that went in the air.
I thought we were going to have to get a little gust of wind behind us.
That one barely got over.
Barely, but he got over.
School record.
School record.
It's next.
Trevor.
Trevor, go ahead, Trevor.
Hey, Matt.
How you doing today?
Good.
I want to start this call off by saying I love the unsportsmanlike call.
on the first play of the game.
So that set the tone.
The defense came out and took care of business.
I like that.
I like that.
I miss that.
What happened?
We weren't at the place we were going yet.
What happened on that?
I didn't see.
Did we get an unsportsman line?
I don't remember what it was.
Yeah.
We just got a little chippy.
Took it to the sideline, got a little chippy.
And that's what needed to happen to be in that game, in my opinion,
is we just set the tone from the jump.
Gotcha.
And we did.
second of all if you if you watch the coverage georgia was in all game the middle of the field
was wide open and i was just praying for willie rodriguez on the goal on there before the
half let me tell you something about the middle of the field i'm like oh my gosh yeah it was wide
open man it was driving me insane i appreciate the call if you i don't know if you've seen this
video it's on social media but you need to find it on our last drive before the four it was our
second down the second and eight we've talked about part of the rinked
reason, maybe you make the case that Bush had a good call. Go look at that second and eight.
There's a video from the quarterback's perspective, and Brock gets the ball, and if he had one
millisecond more time, Fred Ferrier was not only open, he might have scored a touchdown.
Did you see, you know what I'm talking about? If you go back, he's cutting across the middle,
his guy does not go with him. He's looking the other way. And Brock sees him.
and he throws it and at the last second,
a big guy who's beaten his man tips it,
and that was the second down.
If he has a millisecond more,
if you look at the video from the quarterback's perspective,
Ferrier either scores or like gets inside the 10-yard line.
Drew, I was sick after,
but when I saw that video, I was really sick.
Like, a millisecond more, and he gets it.
Yeah, I don't want to pile on my guy, Marcus Cox,
but he got beat on the end.
against a great player, it happens.
And Van der Gryff was backpedaling,
trying to give himself a second to get that ball off.
Just a fraction.
I mean, there wasn't really a safety back there.
There was no one there.
He makes that catch.
He's turning the corner, and it's not all the way gone.
It's a big explosive play.
If you're looking at it from the quarterback's point of view,
all of the defenders are on the right side.
And Farrier has the whole left side to himself, Ryan.
It would have been one of those historic plays,
and it was tapped back.
Barely at the last second.
You know, offensive coordinators, they like to keep one play in their pocket that they see they think they may need late in the game.
I wonder if that was it.
I wonder if that was the play.
So there is a part where we said, well, they should have run it on second down.
The second down play worked if Marcus Cox gets that block.
And Brock has to complete the pass, but it's a short pass.
It's only like a six or eight-yard pass.
Yeah, I mean, but it just shows, I mean, they just haven't gotten enough time on Brock dropping back to pull those plays off, which is really holding the offense back right now.
to find that video. It might make you sick as you watch it. Scoring TDs or Tuddies, we could use
them. We could use at least one. We have none in our first two days, two games, but we'll
probably score one against Ohio. And if you want to do that, we better score one against Ohio.

Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio.
There's people still going at,
me about that interception.
Listen, I wanted it to be an interception.
I just don't think it was.
Because I think if it doesn't hit the ground, then he caught it.
So, like, it's either, it either hits the ground or he caught it.
There's no point I see him juggling it.
And if he's not juggling it, like, remember, I think he actually catches it a little bit.
Then I think the ball kind of hits the ground and comes out.
But I think his elbow is, I think the most likely call that,
probably should have been is a catch and then the ground knocks the ball out which in the NFL that's
not a catch but in college I actually think it is a catch but either way I don't think there's a
scenario drew where we get the pick six I can't remember a time where we've had that excitement
ripped around ripped away from us like that I mean Dane's touched out an old miss couple of year
comes to mind but I mean that was something special they got pulled away that one's going to sting for a
Wow. We'll talk more about this later, but we are at, like, one of the heads of ESPN Radio's house.
And we're, Mario and I are watching it. Like, at this point, they hadn't invited us into the house.
We were outside the house, but he has a television with four screens.
And everybody else is partying, and Mario and I are watching it through the window of his house.
And we see that play, and I kind of forgot where I was for a minute.
and I'm in like a sports coat and pants and I start I run I run away and scream and the entire party turns around and looks at me
and he's jumping up and down and I'm jumping up and down and everybody's going what's happening and then then they
throw the they say it's incomplete and I go well nothing actually it was just me going nuts I completely
you know for a man my age I completely lost my I went nuts during that flight I don't think you were alone
It was pretty cool that he was running towards the student section, too, because they were losing it.
Also, I got a shout out the student section.
There's been years, not their best effort.
That thing was full like 45 minutes before kickoff, and they were rowdy the whole time.
So I know some tickets got sold to red and maybe the top right corner of the stadium wasn't full,
but whatever this new class of students, they are into some football.
I want to share Tom Leach's thought about that interception.
And he was a good point.
he said if the ball went down the way it popped up in the air
you almost think a hand had to be under it and when he hit the ground
it kind of popped it up I took the opposite view
which is the way it popped up it had to have hit the ground
but you know I mean I don't know I think the best argument for calling it an
interception is there wasn't enough grounds to overturn it
I think when you watch it on tape it's hard to call it an interception
But I also think the argument of it's not 100% clear.
It's not a terrible argument.
But either way, it still would have been, we deserved a break like that.
We did.
And it just didn't happen.
Who's up next?
Bill.
Bill.
Bill, go ahead, Bill.
Okay, let's try.
Craig.
Craig, go ahead, Craig.
Hey, guys.
It's a great atmosphere.
You can't ask for better special teams.
Defense has been unbelievable.
But you've got to sense the moment.
and it's expectations.
You got to go for that.
The crowd was into it.
They're ready to go.
I mean, it's Georgia.
When are you going to get another chance like this?
And you've got to realize that.
Your defense, as good as it is, they're worn out.
And it was the same thing with South Carolina.
They played fairly good defense against South Carolina.
They're just on the field all day.
And you got to recognize that moment, and you got to go for it.
You got to go for it.
Bottom line, let's take Nick Roush's stats as being correct.
I have no reason to think they're not.
We're three for eight on passes going over eight yards,
and we've had two runs for first downs
over more than eight yards with a scramble.
So I think we got a 40% chance maybe of completing this.
You give me a 40% chance at home to beat the number one team in America.
I'm going for it every single time.
Yeah, you can't give the ball back to them
and let them have a chance to run the clock out.
I think you have to go for it.
And remember, if you get it,
then we're at let's say the 40
that we will have the ball
we are a few yards from field goal range
two or three
they're going to use all of their timeouts
they have not shown to have an explosive
passing game in the thing
they're going to use all their timeouts and if you get
another first down
you've won the game
yeah that's that that's the I mean
you just are you have to go for it there
I feel like
Yeah, I mean, I'm going for it with a 5% chance.
You just don't give the ball to Georgia and let them be in control when it's a number one team.
If it's any other team on the schedule, I'll hear you out a little bit, but you're playing the number one team that's 141 consecutive games.
You've got to take some chances.
I agree with you.
You tell me before the game, I get one play, fourth and eight to beat Georgia.
Wouldn't we all have signed up for that?
Of course.
Every single one of us would have signed up for it.
You had it.
You have to go.
You have to take that chance.
Who's next?
Brandon.
Brandon.
Go ahead, Brandon.
I think the game Saturday brought back a lot of hope to the fan base that may have been completely gone after the game Saturday.
More in a loss than I believe normal.
Yeah, I agree.
I think that we can get to seven wins, but that Ole Miss game is the big kicker on that one.
My question to you guys is what would happen to Stoops if he missed a bowl game or had six wins and only lost the bowl game?
Yeah, nothing's going to happen to him unless he wants to do it.
I mean, I'm, you know, I'll probably get asked some version of this question 30, 50, 100 times on this show over the next two months,
and it's going to be the same answer absent some crazy thing happening.
he will not get fired.
He will only not be the coach here if he doesn't want to be,
which I think is a decent chance.
I think if you win six games, it wouldn't even be a discussion.
Seven games wouldn't be a discussion.
Five, there's going to be a lot of unrest with the fans,
and that's an issue.
But because of what he's done here,
because of his contract, because of how he and Mitch,
there is not a scenario that I could see where he would be fired.
If they won three, then let's talk about it.
But even then, even then, I'd be surprised to be honest with you.
Appreciate it.
Do you agree with that?
Yeah.
I mean, he's earned the right to climb out of this hole.
Heck, we said the same thing about Cal.
He's earned the right to get out of the mess.
I agree.
And it ended in another first round loss.
So I think, and I've thought even before losing South Carolina,
we're getting near the stoop's area anyway.
It's been 12 years.
We know the family history.
I think you look at the end of this year, he might consider it.
Heck, right now we're projected to play Iowa in a bowl game.
One of he beats Iowa in a bowl game.
If we have to play Iowa in a bowl game.
Music City Bowl, that's the new projection.
We cannot play Iowa anymore in these games.
All right, when we come back, we'll talk more about the game.
I want to tell you about my bizarre Saturday night in Milwaukee and being in Green Bay.
