Welcome, everyone.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live.
There we go.
Listen to that in Lebanon, Kentucky.
In Marion County, it is Ham Days here in Lebanon,
on an absolutely rainy, stormy day all across the south, including Kentucky.
But we are here in Lebanon for what was once voted, or is voted, one of Kentucky's top 10 events of the year.
Marion County, the Lebanon Ham Days.
And we are here.
Great crowd here this morning, especially considering the weather out there here at the gym.
Is this the old Lebanon high school?
Is that right?
They said it was the Lebanon Middle School for a long time.
Lebanon Middle School.
All right.
The Clark's Pump and Shop phone lines 859-280.
2287. A Vision auto glass text machine 772-7-745-254 in this edition
sponsored by the T.J. Smith-Lavis. If you call T.J. will make them pay. We are here for
ham days, which I just had the country ham biscuit here, and I'm telling you, it's worth the trip.
Whoever, who makes this? Who makes these? Cedarwood, right here?
Cedarwood. Big salute to Cedarwood. That's absolutely awesome.
Cedarwood restaurant here. We just had.
Adam and glad to be here. Great crowd.
Three of my best friends here
were taking off for Oxford as soon as
it's over, Ryan, and glad to be here.
A lot going on. Drew and I were here for probably
five seconds and already had one of these country ham
biscuits. We sprinted in here to get one
of them, so they are really, really good. They've got
some kind of peach apple cider beer back there.
Good buddy's beer. A little white peach cider here.
That's beer back there. Yes.
Allegedly. Oh, nice. I need a little beer
to go with your country ham. That's exactly what
my group needs to do before they get in that call.
and go.
Now, we're going to be here, get you ready for UK Ole Miss.
Also, as part of Ham Days, they have the haybell toss.
The six of us are going to give us our shot.
But before we get started, we're going to do this towards the end of the show.
I wanted to see how you do it.
Okay.
Right?
We wanted to see how you do it.
So this is, what's your name?
Steve, he won last year, right?
Former champion.
Former champion.
Not last year, but former champion.
Now, Steve is going to show us right here how you do.
Just go ahead and do it right now.
How you do a haybell toss?
So for people who don't know, how wide is that, would you say?
That's, what, three feet long, maybe?
Maybe a little more.
Three and a half.
Three and a half feet long and wide.
Here he goes.
Now, this is what we're going to be doing.
Okay, you walk two steps.
He's like a kicker.
That's exactly right.
All right, here we go.
A little south paw stands.
Oh, now look, there's the golf swing.
Yeah.
The golf swing.
Here we go.
Oh, there's a swoon.
Oh, there's a twirl.
Oh, and towards the audience.
Hit a child.
Oh.
My has 10 points.
I would not have thought of the twirl.
No, the twirl threw me off.
I thought I knew where he was going next, and then there was a spin.
So he starts with a golf swing, and then he went to the shot put.
You know, they do that in shot put.
They spin around.
Here's the former champion, if you want to give one more look at it.
This is another champ right here.
Last year, he's won three times, he says.
He's won three times.
He's a big dude.
I feel like this is.
Here we go.
Now, let's see what his strategy is.
He goes, he goes swing.
Swing. That's a golf swing right there.
And now, he does the spin, too.
Wow, all right, so that was also wonderful.
Okay.
All right, so now we know how to do it.
You do that for people at home who couldn't see it, you swing it like a golf club, swing it.
And then you spin and throw it like you were throwing like a hammer throw in the Olympic.
I had the pendulum formation there.
I was all in on the golf swing, but that little pirouette they did at the end, that threw me off.
I don't know if I have that next step in my arsenal.
He threw that about 45 feet, I guess, right?
So what do you think that we're going to get?
You think we can get to 30?
Wait a minute.
Here's another one.
I have a strategy that's going to make me win.
I already figured it out.
Having watched it now, I see what you're supposed to do, and I'm ready to go.
They gave us some tips.
It's not really where the haybell land.
It's the role you get after it land.
That can really help you more than anything.
And I want to thank whoever did this.
They gave us a trophy to give away.
Patrick, thank you very much.
This will be a trophy for first place.
And the only thing, they can't, they're practicing on that one, but we have our own.
Because as it goes, the hay falls off of it and makes it to where it won't go as far.
Oh, that's why I'm going last.
Yes.
859-280-2287.
We are getting ready for Kentucky and Old Miss.
But before we do that, Marion County, I always ask you do this when we go places.
Give us the famous athletes from Marion County.
Well, of course, it starts with the Epps family, Anthony Epps, McAle Epps,
Father's son, both won state titles here.
Father daughter.
Father, daughter, sorry.
Elton Scott was Mr. Basketball the year after Marion County won the state title.
That's right.
It's like Utah.
People forget, like, Utah, Keith Van Horn was there, but it was the year after he left
was the year that they ended up getting to the championship,
except they won this the junior year, and then Elton Scott was Mr. Basketball the senior year.
I guess Michaela's teammate Kyra Gooden, she ended up playing at UK,
and I think they ended up transferring to Louisville, played at Louisville.
Not an athlete, but I think the Turtleman.
man's from here too, right? The turtle man.
Five action.
Five action. Is Turtle Man, is that, is he still
going? I don't think so.
I don't still face it. He's still going. So he'll
still come get your stuff out of your house?
All right, that's good to know. Well,
so Marion County, long sports
tradition. We were talking about, we've talked
about this when we were here before, long music
tradition. Like, Ike and Tina Turner
played here, Richard Pryor played here,
Jamie Fox, or not Jamie Fox,
sorry, Red Fox, was he,
here as well. Long tradition. Alice Bluegown. That's right. We played right outside here just earlier this
year. Long tradition of some great musicians, comedians, et cetera, played here over the years. The best
black musicians in the world played here in Marion County at a couple of the night spots they had here.
It was like on the tour they would cross the country and would always stop here in Marion County.
You can learn more about hand daves at visit Lebanon.k.k.com and we will be here all day. We are on our way to
Oxford, or I'm on my way to Oxford for Kentucky and Old Miss. The cats now, the spread has come down,
down to 16 points as some money comes in on Kentucky to cover. Lane Kiffin said this will be one of the
best defenses we play all year. He said we will not see a better defensive player all year than
Deion Walker. But he said we're going to play fast and we're going to try to wear them down.
Drew, do you think that's something that they'll be able to do?
It's pretty hard to stop them.
Stoops even said Kentucky's been trying to simulate this offense,
even going back to the summer, not just this week,
and it's nearly impossible to do.
Brad White talks yesterday about how you can't sub.
They play so fast.
They play so fast.
You get stuck in there.
You're in.
We'll take you out the next drive, but you're committed.
Now, a long drive can only last two and a half minutes,
but once you're in, you're in and you're committed,
and you can't take a play off because they're,
just waiting for you to show a weakness, and that's when they hit you with an explosive play.
That's one of the things when you watch the game. So the way Ole Miss plays, if they don't
sub, then you can't sub, basically. And they intentionally wait until they feel like they got you.
I was listening to Greg McElroy talk about this yesterday. They wait until they see a defensive
group you've put on the field that they think they can exploit, and then they don't sup,
so that you're stuck with that group the whole time. And McElroy said, as a coach, you're a
Coach, you have to be extra careful that you don't put play players against Old Miss that can't play against anything.
Because if you do, you might be stuck with them for five, six, seven plays.
Very interesting to hear that.
You know, they're right.
Kentucky's defense is the one thing that could keep them in the game tomorrow,
but they've got to get off the field on third down.
You know, they can't be out there forever.
That's what we want to do to them.
We want to have these long, time-consuming drives against them to keep their offense off the field.
That's going to require running the ball.
They all have to run the ball.
Now, last year, Old Miss was.
the fastest team in the SEC and one of the four fastest teams in the country.
And we were the slowest team in the SEC and one of the four slowest teams in the country.
So this is this bigger contrast of styles, as you will see in a football game,
will Kentucky on offense be able to kind of impose their will and make it to where they can
at least slow down the Ole Miss train?
I actually think, you know, Stoops and Kiffin are going to be battling for who gets control of the tempo.
Stoops, he came up on that Iowa football.
He wants to get down to a crawl, run it, played fill position game.
I actually think with Kentucky's defense, at least early in the game,
I think Ole Miss, they've played four not very good teams.
They've all been blowouts.
I think Kentucky's defense might hit them in the mouth a little bit,
and it might be low scoring early,
and Stoops might get that tempo he'd prefer.
I just worry about that holding up for four quarters,
because if Ole Miss scores a couple times,
I just don't have a lot of faith.
Well, that's a thing.
We can't fall behind because I don't,
if we fall way behind,
And I don't, it's hard to see us having to play catch up.
It's hard to see us having to throw the ball a lot and be successful.
You know, after my comments about the crowd, which were now in the newspaper, they were literally in the newspaper yesterday.
The Clarion Ledger did a story about my crowd comments, which absolutely blows my mind.
I do think that I've heard through the grapevine that some people think Kiffin might send out those comments today.
If he does that, then I'm going to consider that the epitome of success.
If there's a coach that will call out the media or have some fun on Twitter,
it is Lane Kiffin.
So that will be fun to watch.
But the thing is, we cannot let them get up early.
Because, Ryan, we will not come back.
If we're down 17, that game is over because of the way they play.
But if we stay in it and they start pressing, I think that's where you can have success.
Yeah, you said it.
We are not built to come from behind if we trail by a bunch of points.
Our offense is just not built for that right now.
On the other hand, if they get up by a couple touchdowns, that's tough.
That's put the nail in the coffin.
That's the kind of thing that can spy roll.
Once they get a little momentum, get you on your hills.
That crowd's going.
It can end up being a blowout real fast.
Now, a piece of news that I think is unfortunate, and I, you know, we'll see if it ends up being the case.
They released the injury report.
Running back chip trae and him is out.
he was expected to potentially play and now he's out and I heard and this is a this is a I would say scuttle butt not scoop but I heard he is considering and may even be having a surgery that could put him out for the year that would allow him to potentially come back and play but you know they're kind of making the decision is it worth it now if he keeps missing games this was a huge piece of what we
kind of were hoping to do if that ends up being the case. And again, I don't know for sure. He's
definitely out this week, but I think there's a chance he's out potentially for the rest of the year.
If that happens, luckily our running backs have stepped up, but it would still be a big loss
and we would be razor thin at the position. Yeah, you know, coming in, he was going to be RB number
one. And remember the early scuttlebutt was he could be back potentially for the South Carolina game.
So each week this has gone on, it does make you wonder, man, is it worse than we all thought,
worse than maybe what they thought.
But it makes that running back room even thinner.
It was thin to start with even thinner when he's out.
I would, I mean, the thing is, Drew, I would understand the decision.
If he ends up, if he's missed five games, assume he's missing the old miss game,
if he missed five games, we're two and, you know, say we lose, we're two and three.
I would get it.
But that really stinks because, I mean, if you talk to people on the staff, they think
that dude can be great and is great, and not to have him all year would be the worst.
Yeah, so far, I don't think you can ask the current running backs that played to do much better,
but they can't be expected to do that for an entire season.
They need him back.
He kind of adds a different way of playing.
He's got a little more strength than how he runs and the other two,
so it brings you a little more versatility.
It stinks if he's out longer term because, as Ryan just noted,
we were hoping to have him back week two or three.
And just think to play an SEC schedule with three running backs, two of them are freshmen.
That's a big ask.
I mean, this is a guy, like, if you were asking me,
the beginning of the year. How is Kentucky good? I mean, he was a huge part of it. He was a huge part of it.
And to not, if we, if we don't get him at all at any point that would be disappointing,
859-280-2287, we want to take your calls. Shannon, I have to tell you something. Yesterday,
Billy is very offended. He is very offended that we think he's going to come in last. And yesterday,
he said to me, there's no way he's coming in last. No way. No way. He's, that's very offended.
He's shaking his head right now.
No way he's coming in last.
To me, I think the odds are on him coming in last.
Will you, how much will you make fun of him if he does come in last?
He'll never live it down.
He won't.
I know that he's been picked last in like every poll that we do.
I understand that yesterday there was another poll.
Yesterday there was a poll on the text machine.
Who has the best radio voice of the group?
And they rank them.
Shannon was number one, which I think is fair.
Drew was number two.
I was three, Ryan four, and then Mario 5 and Billy 6.
He now even comes in last on the radio voice.
I feel bad for him.
He finishes at the bottom of every poll.
Well, Billy, I know he's been watching YouTube videos.
He's doing everything that he can in preparation to not finish last in this competition today.
We'll see.
The spin adds a new thing.
I didn't know you were supposed to spin, so I think you all sitting in the back row better watch.
You might be in the fly zone.
859-280-2287.
When we come back, I want to talk a little bit about not just the game tomorrow,
but the Mark Pope philosophy we talked about.
I had a conversation last night that kind of expanded a little bit on something I said earlier this week.
And we'll get you ready.
We are here at Ham Days with the best ham in the state of Kentucky.

I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis

And when IT's friends stopped by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get to fly.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.

you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow night.
They also have a pokey pig 5K.
Is that on?
Pokey Pig 5K
I don't know what that means but I like it
It's running
I figure that
But there's a lot of other festival
type things going on
One person writes on the text machine
772-774-5254
Matt I love the show
Been listening to it for nine years
But if we lose on Saturday
I'm blaming you
Because you got that crowd fired up
You shouldn't talk trash before games
If Ole Miss needs me
to pump them up than they got other problems.
I don't think we have, what do you want, as I said the other day,
what do you want me to do?
Not say what I feel like Old Miss.
If you're ranking stadiums,
old miss is behind, is ahead of Vandy,
and then that's it.
Maybe Missouri.
Maybe they're ahead of Vandy and Missouri.
Missouri has a petting zoo, though.
Missouri does have a petting zoo.
So, I mean, it's just being honest.
Now, I do think they'll be loud tomorrow because they're good,
but in general, I think we should be able to handle the environment.
Oh, Miss is one of the top five, top six teams in the country.
They shouldn't need a blowhard radio show.
First of all, why you call me a blowhard?
That's not fair.
You don't need to be calling me a blowhard.
That's not, I didn't ask you if I was a blowhard.
I mean, you know, in the nicest of ways.
Talking head.
Talking head, yeah, there we go.
Yeah, I don't think that was very nice at all.
859-280-2287.
I just had another person to write me and say the information I'm saying about chip-traying them is very likely correct.
So I hope that's, I hope I'm wrong.
But that would be bad news.
That stinks.
Those guys have done a great job stepping up with them out so far.
But like I said, a moment ago, you can't ask him to do that an entire year.
And if you were to have another injury to that group, you're being down to two scholarship players.
You have, you know, Patterson even just missed a game recently.
So you're already kind of two as it is.
One person writes, Matt, if he, if Tray and him doesn't play, what happens on the NIL money?
That's a good question.
I don't know.
I mean, give it back.
Well, it's a private company, like, you know, in the NFL, if you get hurt, you still have to, you still get paid, right?
Yeah.
I don't know what happens if you get hurt with the college and I'll deal.
I don't know that it's a very good question, but I don't know the answer to it.
Can we just put him on the sideline and wrap him up like a NASCAR?
And that way at least he's like got some use for the advertisers.
Just holding like, you know, that's interesting.
With him, you're going to want him back.
So keep paying him.
Yeah, that's a really good question, though.
I mean, if you bring a kid in, and it's a, I don't know how much his was,
but it's a million dollars, let's say, and they never play.
Easiest million you ever make?
Yeah, that's a really good question.
I don't know.
8.59-280-2287.
Who's up first?
Clay is up first.
Clay, go ahead, Clay.
Hey, Matt, I said it.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
We're the best team in the nation.
we're on our way to Oxford.
At what?
Are you talking about it?
Football?
Oh, yes, I'm taking off the football.
We are our Oxford.
And we will beat this team probably by 40, if not 30.
Oh, God.
I like the comments.
I will say this, Clay, if we win, check my social media.
If we win, I'm setting up my postgame show on the Grove with the speaker and letting everybody there hear about it.
Because I already have a play.
So if we win, you look, and I'll tell you the place, and we'll be there talking a little trash.
Yeah, Lane Kiffin can run, but he can't hide.
That's all I'll say.
They can beat firemen, but not us.
This is SEC football.
Aiden Lairn.
Well, it is the case.
Appreciate it, Chip.
It is the case.
They've not played anybody.
I mean, if you look at their schedule, they haven't played anybody.
This will be their first taste of Ryan, a real team, and we'll see what happened.
Yeah, it's their first SEC game.
They haven't faced an SEC defense yet.
But I tell you what, if Kentucky wins,
And you do that post-game show from the Grove.
That'll be one.
That's one of your best all-time troll moves you'll ever do.
Seriously, if we win that post-game show, it's going to be epic levels of trolling.
Because I'm going to look at all those fancy people and just say to them one by one,
do you realize how much?
And luckily I got three friends that hopefully keep them from beating me up.
That's your security.
That's your crew right there.
That's the security crew right there.
You just walk up, drink out of their champagne flute, start doing the show right there.
Maybe Barstall, Mincey will come by?
Yeah, the Barstall guys into it, too.
Shannon, the White Sox, they went and won again.
Oh, man.
They win one again, so now they've won three in a row.
Hotest team in baseball right now.
They once again had a ton of home fans come to see him break the record,
and then they went and won the game again.
Nobody wants them to win.
So now they have three games left in Detroit.
It's at Detroit.
Detroit's playing for the playoffs.
Troy's playing for the playoffs, but the White Sox,
what if they win out?
What if they win their last seven games to keep them from breaking the record?
That would be a really exciting thing for them, wouldn't it?
I'm thinking about poor Detroit if you don't make the playoffs because you just lost to a team with 38 wins on the year.
And you got swept.
And you got swept by them.
So, you know, I hope they lose.
I think I'm with the White Sox fans.
I want them to lose.
See, I'm kind of pulling for them.
I think it'd be kind of cool that, like, all year long they've stunk, and they knew with seven games left, we can't lose again,
and then they go right and they win every game.
I would like that.
They turn it around.
And, you know, the other game sweep of the Angels means the Angels are going,
they were on pace to have the worst record in their franchise history.
Now they do.
They have their worst.
So Chicago now they can save that.
They now made California have their worst season ever.
I also saw, by the way, their announcer, I think his name is Steve Stone.
Oh, yeah.
Those of you that are younger, or those of you a little older, might remember he used to do the Cubs games.
Back when it was on WGN when you were a kid, Steve Stone is the White Sox announcer.
He re-signed for five more years yesterday, which I thought was fascinating.
After you've been through that awfulness, to sign up to Drew do it for five more years is amazing.
Probably easy games to call.
Nobody's listening.
He's saying whatever he wants.
That's exactly what I just.
A pretty stress-free job.
That is true.
Nobody's listening.
I'm wondering how he just flipped from the Cubs to the White Sox.
I mean, that'd be like Harry Carey going from the Cubs.
Well, no, but Harry Carey started with the White Sox.
Oh, actually, Harry Carter started with the Cardinals.
So he went to a rival, too.
He started with the car.
Remember, Drew Deiner started with Kentucky and went to Louisville.
Yeah, but this is a cross-town rival.
I'm saying.
Went from the Cardinals to the Cubs.
Did he just use Harry Carey and Drew Deiner?
Harry and Drew Deiner, basically the same person.
Who's up next?
Joe is up next.
Joe, go ahead, Joe.
Thanks a lot, Matt.
Well, Matt, you're not going to be the reason why Mississippi wins or loses this game tomorrow.
But the good Lord gave us a big break, Matt.
I don't think it's supposed to be that hot down in Oxford.
And in fact, I think it's supposed to be hotter up in South Bend, Indiana than it is in Oxford, Mississippi.
Yeah, it's going to be damp.
I don't know if it's supposed to rain during the game, but it's going to be damp and it's going to be cool.
I do agree with you.
We got kind of a break on the weather.
And my last point will be win the special teams a part of the game tomorrow.
In other words, let's go with that kid that can punt the ball 60 yards,
and let's just hope we can win the game on our last second field go.
much Lane Kiff and cry all the way back to the locker room.
Well, I think if we're going to win, I appreciate the call.
If we're going to win, we need like a Barry-on-Brown kick return or a Macklin punt return.
We're going to need something like that, Ryan, if we're going to end up breaking and getting the victory.
Yeah, a big special teams play, maybe a P-S.
Bought kick, maybe.
Scoop and score or something, yeah, that counts.
Yep.
There's got to be something.
Because you've got to remember, we played Georgia right there, and if we had one of those, we win the game.
We just didn't end up having one during the course of it.
take a break. I'm going to talk a little basketball when we return.
This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Come back, Tucky Sports Radio here live at Ham Days.
Philly's back there practicing.
No, not allowed.
He's not allowed to throw.
Do not let him throw.
Look at this man.
I don't even like this, but he's not allowed him throw.
A couple shouts out.
First of all, to the guy with the KSR shirt back there.
Yeah.
Shout out.
And then we had this person right here a minute ago that had our 2014 KSR tour t-shirt.
Where did he go?
I saw him too where you were in the bathroom.
That is like an old school.
That's a 10-year-old t-shirt.
I used to have like dozens of them in the back of my car.
I think we ultimately gave him away to a shelter.
But I like seeing that shirt.
Was that the first year that we went on a full-fledged?
I think we did one the year before.
I think we did 2013, 2014, 2015, but he had the, that was with the, yeah, there it is right there.
KSR Radio Summer Tour t-shirt right there.
Also, this kid back against the wall owns me.
He walked up, saw my Titan shirt,
said, hey, your football team sucks.
I walked away.
So that kid lives in my head right now.
One person writes, Matt, how many times over under two and a half do our players cramp
so that we can get off the field and change lineups?
I would say over.
You're going to see, I make your prediction, you're going to see a lot of times that one of our
guys go down and like, ah, and does a soccer player thing.
I don't know if people remember, we did that a lot two years ago at Ole Miss.
So much so that their crowd was booing, we will definitely.
do that. We did it a lot last time. It's that southern heat.
You know, they don't give us enough water, enough pickle juice. It's not that we're
faking it. It's just a place where you cramp up. I expect it to happen again tomorrow.
That's the football equivalent of the flop. I'm surprised they don't. I mean, I know it's hard to tell us.
Well, you're supposed to, if you fake and they know you fake, it's supposed to be a penalty.
It's just hard for them to call because, Ryan, you don't know for sure if they did it.
Yeah, and hopefully they're a little sneakier than looking over to the sideline, standing up,
and all of a sudden just drop the ball down.
thing. Like when a guy just goes, oh, come on.
And they've done that before.
All right, I want to talk basketball here just a second.
Before I go, the phone's about Pope.
You may remember earlier this week, I was talking about his recruiting philosophy
and what he said to me in the meeting about the philosophy.
And I want to expand on it just a second because I think for fans, especially in places like here,
you know, where Anthony Epps played, I think it's, I think it's, I think it's,
It's what our fans want to hear.
But basically, you know, here's exactly what he said to me when I asked him.
I said, how are you going to decide who to recruit?
And he said, well, I'm going to try to get the absolute best players that I can get.
He said, but I have a vision that in this sea of NIL, Kentucky can be a place that sets the standard
on what this, on what college basketball should be.
And what he said was, basically, we will have the same amount of NIL as everybody else.
But we will not sell it based on NIO.
We will sell it based on Kentucky.
We will say if you come here, these will be the best years of your life.
You will play for this fan base.
And yeah, the money will be what it is, but you will also have this special spot in a particular place.
He said, I want guys to go to the NBA.
He said, I hope they go to the NBA.
But I'm looking for guys who have the vision of wanting to play college basketball at Kentucky.
And he said that won't be everybody.
There'll be guys who that's not the thing.
And he said, we will end up not recruiting them.
But he said, and this I think was his quote,
I want Kentucky to be an oasis that is different than everything in college basketball,
takes the best parts of the new era and the old era, and that's what we do.
So my question for you is, it sounds great.
Do you think that can work?
I mean, clearly it's already worked because he got two recruits since I said that,
but do you think that can work?
Yeah, I'm going to say, he's already off to a good start with Jasper Johnson and Malachi Marino,
getting two guys that understand the culture and they want to play and be a part of that culture here.
But they're from here, so that's a little different.
So now he's got to go out and he's got to get these five-star high-profile guys in Indiana,
North Carolina, wherever they're from, and get them to convince to sell them on that idea that you're talking about.
But do you think he can, Drew?
Because this is, you talk to high school recruits more than I.
do not as much as you used to but do you think kids will will buy into that do you think kids
will say hey that is a special place not just a place that can get me to the league I have concerns
I mean there will be some but I just I don't know how much a 16 17 year old kid growing up
and you name it that's not Kentucky Chicago wherever I just don't know how much appreciation they're
going to have for the past I hope I hope it works and I like that he's trying it I just
I don't want to sound like kids today, but I just don't know how big a pool of talent there is out there
that understands what it means to be in Kentucky.
I like Pope's philosophy in theory, but in reality, I don't think you're going to get the best of the best
because they're going to go where the money is, and that's just the world that we live in.
But what about, I mean, I think his point is, if the money is equal.
Okay.
So let's use Jasper Johnson as an example.
When Kentucky was first going after Jasper Johnson, I think the money that they were offering was significantly
less than Alabama and North Carolina.
Matter of fact, I think it was like half.
And in the college basketball world, there was this concern of,
how does Kentucky think they're going to get players
if they're literally offering half the money?
Then, from what I understand, the money got, they still didn't end up,
I think he still would have made more money with Alabama or North Carolina,
but they ended up getting to a point where they could do it,
and I think the being at home, being for Kentucky,
made up the gap in that money.
Do you think that can work?
If you're competitive, if you're neck-in-neck with another school that's also recruiting this player,
I think that the tiebreaker can go to Kentucky's history.
Yes.
And the type of program.
And the fan base, absolutely.
But I will say this.
I remember Vince Mero telling me as he was going into recruiting in his third year at Kentucky.
He said for the first two years, I was able to recognize.
recruit based on what we did at Miami or what we did at Florida State what etc he said now we got
to do it here I do think there's a sense drew like he's going to be able to recruit on the history
of Kentucky some of the players in the NBA but after a year or two it'll be based on what he does
here as coach yeah and you know we talk to kids they barely remember John wall
it's unbelievable today barely remember John Wall so Pope's idea of what Kentucky is I just worry
these kids don't even know what he's talking about well I mean not to always
say it to Mario, but we were driving, when we were going to Green Bay, I was talking about
Tayshan Prince, Mario said, Tashon Prince went to Kentucky.
When Pope's talking about the 90s, the high school kids just don't know what he's talking about.
But I think part of the reason was a young generation of fans was raised to believe that no one
played at Kentucky before John Wall. I mean, part of what Cal did was Cal sold Cal and
Cal players. I bet you Cal mentioned Derek Rose more on the recruiting trail than he mentioned Ronda,
for instance. And I think it was because that was the way he sold it. Now it's going to be up to
selling the bigger picture, and we'll see if he's able to do it. So far, it looks pretty good. Who's up next?
Caleb is up next. Caleb, go ahead, Caleb.
Hey, guys. I called in for a football comment, but I guess my thoughts on everything the basketball is,
I think definitely the pool of players that will be sold on Kentucky as the ideal.
It's probably lower than, like, money and getting to the pros.
But I also think because Pope won't do all freshmen like Cal did, I think it won't matter as much.
I agree with that.
I actually think that's a really good point.
Because we're not – I mean, Cal, if he didn't get good freshmen, then we weren't good.
If you go back and look at the years cow was here.
When we got elite freshmen, we were really good.
When we didn't, we weren't.
Because of the fact that you can get the transfer portal, I completely agree.
You might not get all the top guys, but you can make up for the difference in the portal.
I think that's an important point.
Yeah.
And then my football comment was, so two years ago, when we played Ole Miss, you know, we were coming off our 10-win season.
We started 4-0, and then we were about to beat Ole Miss, and then, oh, and I want a hard
on it, but we had the whole penalty at the end that took away at the touchdown.
You know, I'm not a very superstitious person, but I think we got cursed, and we have not
been the same since then.
The next game, we lost to South Carolina, which was the first of three.
So I'm ready for us to go down this weekend and break that curse and get back on the right
track.
I think, you know what, I think that's actually a really good point.
I appreciate the call.
If you remember going into that game against Ole Miss, we were, I think, undefeated, right?
We were 4-0 maybe.
That's it, yeah.
Yeah, we were 4-0.
We go in.
We get up, we get up, we come back.
When we get up, then they take the lead.
We come back and we thought, I remember, we thought we scored when Dan Key caught that.
And in my mind, I was thinking, 5 and 0, South Carolina, Vandy, 6 and 0, 7 and 0.
We could go into the Georgia game 7 and 0, and then we lose that game, and then we lose to South Carolina and we lose to Vandy.
There is a sense that this kind of minor slip over the last two years kind of did start down there.
Yeah. Well, really, I wrote about it this week, but there's three plays the last three times we've played them.
Two times ago in Lexington, we missed an extra point in overtime.
Oh, yes.
Kentucky scored first in overtime, but misses the extra point.
This is the extra point. Oh, miss scores, hits the extra point.
And before that, five seconds left, they throw a fade to D.K. Metcalf, who's now an NFL star.
He catches it on top of Lonnie Johnson. He just doesn't catch that ball.
I mean, we're looking. It could be 3 and 0 for Kentucky in the last three games, but it's 0 and it's been three individual.
moments in all three games that flipped it.
I will say this, unlike the Georgia game in which I think they out-talented us at a lot of
positions.
I don't really think, Drew, that Ole Miss out-talots us.
They have a quarterback that's better.
They have some good players, but their talent is not infinitely better than ours, like, say,
Georgia or Alabama when we play them.
Their quarterback's a star, and he deserves the attention he's getting.
It's just so hard to gauge them as a team, because they have one of the best run defense.
right now in the country too but it's just but they haven't played you know i mean there's stats they
lead in so many categories it's silly it's just hard to tell what exactly they are what's real and what's not
played a real opponent yet yeah uk federal credit unions the official credit union the university

ukfc ukfc uxc uxccccccccccccdddr.m.su dot org when we come back
We're going to set up and have our first two people throw.
Who should go first?
I'm going to say Ryan and Mario.
Okay.
Ryan and Mario will throw first right up here.
We'll get somebody to say where they are our first two throws when we return.
This is Kentucky Sports Radio live at Ham Days.

We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, Wreck.
My mama want you to weigh better.
What?

The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team.

Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball like,
After you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Come on. Welcome back here live at Ham Days.
All right. So here's what we're going to do. We got our first two throwers.
We're going to have Mario and Ryan go first, and then the rest of us will do it later in the show.
We have Steve here who won last year, right?
Not last year. It's been a little while.
Been a little while. Okay, an OG winner.
That's right. An OG winner, you're going to commentate. Before Mario does his throw,
tell me what should we be looking for here to have an epic throw?
So my technique and most people are about the same.
We're about two steps off the line.
We get a couple nice little practice swings, sort of like golf swing,
and then we're going to spin in a big crow hop and let a rip.
Mario, do you already have the hay in your hair?
He does.
Lots of it.
Mario.
He's not worried about his hair than he got.
He dropped the hay to fix his hair.
He already had hay in his hair.
Okay, now you got it.
Mario, everyone, Drew, is going to get two throws.
Okay.
So one to get your bearings.
The farthest throw will be the one that counts.
Mario, please take your first throw.
Here we go.
He swings back.
Ladies and gentlemen from Long Island, New York.
From Long Island, New York, all the way to Marion County.
Oh, no.
Oh, my goodness.
Mario.
All right, that's okay, everybody.
That's all right.
I think he saved the throw.
There was a stutter step that threw off his rhythm, but the arms carried it quite a bit.
I mean, he had a pretty good rhythm, and then he just sort of stopped.
I don't, I was worried about an ACL situation.
All right, now here's Ryan Lemon.
Ryan Lemon is, I think, Shannon, a sneaky favorite.
Oh, yeah, he's got old man.
Country Street.
He's got old man strength.
Steve, what do you think here?
Well, strength is very important.
It is.
As you see, the past winters are all big dudes.
Do you see those biceps staring ass?
It's big time.
It's big time technique, man.
Big time technique.
All right, Ryan, your first throw is ready.
Here we go.
Swinging.
Those are big swings.
Swinging.
His tongue is out.
Never spin, right?
Tongue is out.
He's spinning.
Oh, no, no, no, no.
He faulted.
He went over the line.
By like three feet.
Wow, see.
Don't clap for him.
Don't clap.
That's a fault.
Over the line.
We didn't consider Ryan could come in last because he doesn't follow the rules.
Mark, get it.
For our listeners at home, that wasn't a small fault.
He's out.
He's out.
Three feet over the line.
All right, Mario, you get one more chance.
How about Ryan Lemon, Shannon, Shannon,
breaking the rules on throw number one?
He is a habitual cheater.
It doesn't surprise me at all that he would come out here
and try to get a competitive edge by cheating and going over the line.
He was halfway down the court.
All right, Mario's going to go number two.
He has set a standard.
Right now, Ryan is in last.
Mario is going to try to get.
Let's see if he does it more smooth this time.
Spin on it, Mario.
Here we go.
Spin, Mario, doing his swing from Long Island, New York.
Oh, look that spin.
Look at that.
Wow.
Better.
Well done.
I'd say that spin added five feet, six feet.
Maybe more than that.
You can see where the old landed.
So that red line is where we need to beat.
right now. Yeah, no, he's got it right there. All right, Ryan. That was Ryan's. Will Ryan be able,
will Ryan be able to throw one that counts? As of now, as of now, he is in last place with zero,
was zero whatever's. You know, Matt, that's got to be in the back of his head.
Zero feet. Normally you have the freedom to launch, but he's got to be thinking about a double
fault here. Yes. And unlike Mario, he doesn't have to worry about getting the hay in his hair.
That's not as much of a problem. Mario, I think, got in his head a little bit.
bit and now it's a psychological thing for Ryan.
Steve, I'll let you take this one.
Okay.
Can we just talk about the guns Ryan brought to this event?
Here we go.
Go for it.
Yeah, they're all firing blinks.
Ready, what?
Big span and watch that line.
He's going to fault again.
He's going to fault again.
He's going to fall.
He's going to fall.
He's going to fall.
No, I think he's safe.
No, he's safe.
I think he's safe.
The judge is safe.
Safe.
All right, Ryan Lemon is in.
His foot must have been over it, because that
looked to be on.
Is he farther than Mario?
He is farther than Mario.
Ryan Lemon takes the league. Congratulations.
You're lucky we didn't do one toss only, otherwise you'd be disqualified.
Yeah, I need to see a replay. That looked like it was on the line from my angle.
All right. Let's go ahead. Let's do number three. Shannon, your turn.
Uh-oh, we got a photo. Oh, wait a minute.
Oh, wait a minute. We have a photo.
On the line.
Ryan Lemon is a cro-oh. I don't know. His heel is up.
It looks like it's above. The question is, did that ever come down?
Or did he stay on his tip of the table?
Now, wait a minute, is the rule that he has to, you can't cross it or your heel can't be over it.
I mean, I'd give that to him.
All right, we're giving it to him.
Brian Lemon gets a throw.
That's a controversial decision.
Here go Shannon.
Let's go Shannon.
Show Mario a picture of that.
Shannon with his first throw.
He already looks better.
He does look like he's got it.
Look at that back swing.
That's a golfer back swing.
Oh, foot fault.
Oh, last place.
Another fault.
Last, but even if he had not faulted, that was amazingly poor.
I don't know what I'm talking about, but I think he threw it a little too high.
It came down a little flop shot.
You need to get some.
Wait a minute.
You have to use the same one.
We can't use different ones.
We have to all use a regulation.
Hey, Bail.
I love how competitive you've already.
Oh, listen.
If I'm going to come in last, I need to make sure I know it.
All right, Shannon, here we go.
I think Billy wins, by the way.
I want to go on the record as Billy wins.
Yeah.
The black line.
Yeah.
Here we go.
Shannon goes up.
He is.
Oh, did he pass him?
Did he pass Mark?
He got a good bounce.
Wow.
Is he in last place?
It was a good bounce, though.
Did Shannon get in last place?
Did you guys vote?
Wait a minute.
You didn't put his thing there.
I just kind of whispered there.
I'm going for Billy, but we did not make official picks.
Oh, the first one was farther?
Okay, so there you go.
So now Shannon is in last.
Wait a minute.
No, mine went farther than Mario's.
No, it didn't.
Oh, please.
Shannon.
Oh, no way.
Shannon.
The OVW heavy.
damned over here.
Why did you bail out on the spin?
What?
Did you do that on purpose?
I didn't think it was working for me in the first one.
All right.
Well, Steve, we'll bring you back for the second hour for when the rest of us go.
Thank you very much.
Ryan is the early leader, Shannon, the OVW Radio Heavyweight Champion in last place.
I throw grown men around, not Bays of Hell.
Or, hey, Bayes of Hell.
I'm a little worried that if Ryan wins this photo we have, that's controversy.
It's going to be like the home run.
He's a hotball game.
Everyone has to assume you just never lowered your hill.
It's because of a still photo.
Very controversial.
Who's up next?
Mark is up next.
Mark, go ahead, Mark.
Hey, hey.
Oh, I'm on speakerphone.
Will you give me a stay to be on the speakerphone?
Mark, just talk.
Go ahead.
Don't, don't narrate your speakerphone.
Go ahead.
Hey, me and Philip G.
Rose's younger brother, Tim, we're on our way down to Oxford to watch the cats
tear up those rebels.
and I just got something to say that I'm always skeptical of when people talk about how good their wings are
but my wife and I came into KS Bar last week and ordered the wings and those things
I'll tell you what you've got gold in your waitress Lizzie
Well thank you very much sir be careful on your drive. It's going to be a rainy one
We're going to be dealing with it too. We'll see you when we get down there
Driving through the storm here today
Yeah you and your boys picked a
beautiful day to travel to Oxford, Mississippi. Well, there you go. So we have our early leader
board, Ryan in first, Mario in second, and Shannon in a very disappointing third place. And you're
talking a lot of trash. You've still got to go through. Yeah. I have a strategy. I'm going last because
I have a strategy that I feel like is going to be very successful. We're going to take a break and be
right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio live at Ham Days. Another podcast from some SNL late

This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an
a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.

We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor.
I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge.
That is the point of the show. I'm just going to remind you.
Ah ha, who, ah, who. Again, we are experts.
