Welcome back, hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, here live at Shady Rays in Lexington, where we have all kinds of great deals and specials, the new Kentucky sunglasses, which we got Max to put on a minute ago. Billy and Mario serving coffee right here in the front row. Sorry, yeah. Here, no, you got to do it here. There we go.
Starting point is 00:04:04 You do it right here. How's that? There it is. We are here. First of all, everybody give a big round of applause to Larry, who's my mom is parking the car, but who joined us. Hey, Larry. He's sitting over there in the shade. It's a little hot outside, but good to see him, Ryan.
Starting point is 00:04:18 He always looks good. Are you kidding me? I hope I'm looking just like you. Yeah, I got you. Me and me, buddy. I got you. 859-28027 let's go over a couple things first of all shannon yesterday or two days ago was NBA Media Day so we got to see the debut of reed shepherd and rob dillingham rob dillingham is kind of becoming like a under the radar story in the NBA playing for minnesota has a chance to contend for the title so he he was there and then reed shepherd with his mustache he looked like he's aged 10 years in the off season went from the baby face kill
Starting point is 00:04:54 from North Laurel to the mustached big hair guy in Houston. I'm glad you brought that up. I love that mustache. It's very Richie Farmer-esque of him with that mustache. It's a good look for him, I think. You like it? I like it. Do you realize the NBA preseason starts today?
Starting point is 00:05:08 Today. You got Celtics and Nuggets. The NHL regular season starts next week. Yeah, it's crazy. The regular season. Hockey is about to start. Are they just going to start, like, the NBA season, like, in August eventually? Yeah, the preseason starts today.
Starting point is 00:05:23 But, all right, so I have a question for you. Between Reed Shepard, Rob Dillingham, Ryan, how do you expect them to do in their rookie years? The NBA. Reed Shepard is the odds-on favorite for rookie of the year right now. I think we all learned you can't doubt either one of those guys, but especially Reed. I'm not so sure I'm sold on the mustache, but I'm sold on his game, man. You don't like the mustache? Well, you know, it kind of looks like the one that Shannon grew during COVID.
Starting point is 00:05:46 It was a glorious mustache. It was kind of there. It was a lot of. It was a horrible mustache. What do you mean? We'll see your mustache, you tough guy. Well, I actually think it's going to be fascinating to watch because Reed Max has always kind of been under, like he's always been underrated. I think he was kind of underrated in high school.
Starting point is 00:06:04 He outperformed it. There were people who said, well, your dad was good, but that doesn't mean you're good, and he outperformed it. Then he gets to UK. He's in a recruiting class with three top ten guys, and he ends up being the guy who may have been the best player. Now he's at the highest level. he's the guy with the expectations on him. He's the guy that people think might be the rookie of the year. Wonder how he handles that.
Starting point is 00:06:28 And their team's not that great, too. So that's going to be another thing. You know, he's going to kind of have to carry that team a little bit almost. I think they've got Fred Van Vleet. Maybe with... Well, they got some other guys. They got Jabari Smith. I mean, they're not great, but he's not going to be carrying it.
Starting point is 00:06:43 No, but I'm looking forward to what Dillingham's going to do in Timberwolves. I mean, Anthony Edwards, obviously, they just lost cat. But it would be interesting to see how they fit him into their system. because it's a lot of Anthony Edwards Bowl and everyone else just surround him. Who do you think is built for success based on the team that they're on better? Rob, because there's a world where Rob played for a bad team and he takes too many shots and he's all over the place. They're going to have him in a certain role.
Starting point is 00:07:08 He's going to be like the seventh or eighth man, Ryan. He's going to come in. They're going to go crazy for three or four minutes while Anthony Edwards rests. And then he'll come back and he'll play that Anthony Edwards role probably while Anthony is out. and Ryan, I actually think he'll do really well in that, playing probably 10 to 12 minutes a game, but getting buckets when he does. That's a perfect role from him.
Starting point is 00:07:28 It's kind of almost what he had at UK, you know, coming off the bench, you know, go out there, get some good run, get some good minutes, hit some shots, go back out. So I think that's perfect for him. I think he is in the perfect spot for him. And I think, I mean, Reed's got a good coach. M.A. O'Doka is a good coach.
Starting point is 00:07:44 The other one is Antonio Reeves. I don't know if he'll make the rotation or not, but he's on a decent team. They shoot a lot of threes. I mean, honestly, Shannon, if Antonio Reeves is going to make it, I actually think he's in a pretty good spot, too. I'm just glad that he got drafted. You know, for the longest time he was listed as being undrafted. I think that he's going to make an impact in the NBA just on the fact that he could shoot the ball.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Carl Towns traded for Julius Randall. So Cat on Cat Crime. Now, Julius Randall is in Minnesota on the same team we just said. And now Carl Towns in New York. Now, you remember when Carl was here. Carl's dream was to play for the Knicks. Absolutely like his dream. He grew up there.
Starting point is 00:08:28 But here's my question. We know Carl pretty well, Ryan. You and I were around him a lot. How's his personality going to handle that New York spotlight, that New York media? He's kind of, he's not quiet, but he's kind of a unique guy. How do you think that's going to play there? Well, that's why he excelled, I think, in Minnesota. You know, the spotlight is not as bright when you're playing in Minneapolis
Starting point is 00:08:50 that's going to be in New York. I heard an interview with him. They played last night. And I felt sorry for him. They asked him about the trade. He goes, I was shocked. And I think he was very sincere. He was shocked.
Starting point is 00:09:00 He didn't see it coming. So we all wanted to succeed. We all didn't do well. But living in New York is going to be a different animal for that guy. And he's going to be thrown in, like, he is going to be judged by the fact, Max. He, the Knicks and the 76ers are going to probably play in the playoffs. And he is going to have to guard Joelle and Bede. And they're going to, like, that matchup is going to be like,
Starting point is 00:09:20 His whole season is going to be defined by how does he play against Joel Embed, which is a lot of pressure. And I think he hasn't had good history against Embed. I think Embed average is like 30 plus against him and he really struggles. So that will be interesting. I think though that team suits him. Brunson being ball dominant and he just gets to sit out there and shoot his threes, I think it would be a good fit. Well, you know, Carl, if you look at the 17 years I've been doing this, Carl is actually 19 now, but Carl is the most unique personality.
Starting point is 00:09:50 in terms of, like, if Carl was here, all of you would like him. He would be friendly to every single person. He would take a picture with every person. He would smile. He would be smart. He would be interesting. But Riney's also just a little odd. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:10:09 That's fair. No, he is. I mean, listen to when NBA players talk about him. They all like him, but he's not really like they all. and I'm just going to be interested to see, Shannon, how does that play in New York City where everything you do is in the spot? I hope he has thick skin. He said that he wanted to play there. He got his wish, and, yeah, if he doesn't perform, then he probably will get a lot of criticism.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Yeah, we'll see. Western Kentucky. Max has new helmets that they're wearing next week. Did you see it? Yeah, I did. It's the helmet is basically the eyes and the top of that thing. What's it called? Big red.
Starting point is 00:10:49 Big red. So basically the blob, the helmet is just two big eyeballs. That's the whole helmet. I kind of think it's awesome, Max. I'm not going to lie. What do you think? It's awesome. And they've also lent into like, it doesn't matter what media and publicity you get as long as you get some.
Starting point is 00:11:07 So just make the worst-looking mascot that is the weirdest shaped thing that makes no sense. Looks like Plato's being pulled apart by a three-year-old and just makes a meteor out of it. I mean, it's better than having, you know, a cartoon dog. or, you know what I mean? Like just a stock standard thing. Just create something that makes no sense and everyone loves it. So I ask Billy, like, what is that mascot? What is Big Red?
Starting point is 00:11:27 He said it's supposed to be a hill. Yeah. That makes no sense. It's a red blob. It's the top of the hill that you have to walk up to go to class over there at Western. This is very nice just so people know what's happening. That's Larry's brother surprising him to come see him here today. Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:11:42 Very nice. He's longtime minister of Cresswood Christian Church, David Blondale. 859, 280, 2287. By the way, the record for Kentucky in the last seven Champions Classics is 1 and 6. Wow. We are 5 and 8 overall, but we've lost six of our last seven in the Champions Classic. Who's up next? Darren is up next.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Darren, go ahead, Darren. Hi, Matt. The first time real long time. Who are? What's up? I'm down here in London, and I saw the Boren Storm and Tour. No. Don't tell me.
Starting point is 00:12:20 me, Richie dunked? I don't believe it. Please don't tell me don't blame me because it's going to hurt my feelings. I'm a... All right, I won't blame me. You tell me... Oh, well, that's a tough... That's a tough task in and of itself, so go ahead. Anyway, then I moved down to London, but anyway,
Starting point is 00:12:36 I did see it, and Rex Chapman happened to be with them that day. It was at the Lawyer County Gym, and Richie was dunking with both hands. You sure you didn't just get Rex and Richie confused? You sure you just didn't get them like... He thought one was the other? I was only drinking a little bit. But if you can't drink at the Laurel County barnstorming tour, Shannon, when can you do it?
Starting point is 00:13:02 That's the place to do it. Yeah, go ahead, sir. And about Rex, he was shooting half foreigners like three throws. I mean, it beat all I ever saying, and I promise Richie dung. So I'm going to get off here and listen. All right, well, I appreciate it. There's your definitive answer. Richie's got two people saying he dunked.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Do you know, Max, do you know who Ritchie Farmer is? Yeah, the dude from the news. Right? No. You think he's a news anchor? Isn't he the guy from WKYT? Whatever? I know he used to play basketball.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Who's that guy? That's Richie something. He think he's a basketball player turned anchor man? You're thinking of Keith Farmer. Oh, Keith Farmer. He's brother. Keith Farmer. And then there's cattle farmer and sheep farmer and all the farmers.
Starting point is 00:13:44 First of all, I love this on a lot of levels. This is not good. You thought Keith Farmer played basketball at Kentucky? Until now, yes. With the past hour and a half. I literally thought we were talking about that guy. I mean, I know he played basketball. I just thought he'd moved on to bigger and better things.
Starting point is 00:14:02 But Keith Farmer didn't play basketball. Keith Farmer's just a news. No, no, Richie. But I thought that was him. No, no. Richie Farmer is former Secretary of Agriculture. He's hosted this show. He lives in Eastern Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:14:15 He's like maybe the best high school. player in the history of the state of Kentucky. You know, Travis Perry may have passed him in three, but he was like Travis Perry and Reed Shepherd before they were that. I apologize to Richie all look up some highlights. Get to know a little bit and maybe we can go to dinner. Shannon, how about how much appreciation he had for Keith Farm? I know, right?
Starting point is 00:14:36 Keith Farmer's getting a lot of shoutouts here today. I mean, how can you confuse those two? Keith's got good game from Madison Central? That's a good question. Yeah, you've never seen Keith Farmer play basketball. That's right. We call him white chocolate. All right, so let me do this.
Starting point is 00:14:48 This will be a good test. Because you grew up in Australia. You weren't around UK basketball. Correct. I'm going to give you some names of our past. Perfect. You tell me if you know who they are. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:57 All right. Jack Givens. No. Sorry. He's one of the announcers. He was the best player on the title team in 1978. Okay. Kenny Walker.
Starting point is 00:15:11 No, his brother Kenneth Walker is a running back for Seahawks. Is that right? No, I don't. Now, Kenny Walker was the NBA slam dunk champion. He played here at Kentucky, so let's get a little closer. Jamal Mashburn. No. Oh, my.
Starting point is 00:15:27 This hurts. I mean, what do we, are we talking 70s here, 80s, 90s? 80s. Okay, so Givens was the 70s, Walker was the 80s, Mashburn was the 90s. I just gave you about it. Okay, so I just gave you three of the seven best players to ever play at the school. Let's get a little closer then.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Tashon Prince. Yeah, absolutely. How do you know Tashon Prince? Left-handed, correct? Went to Detroit. He was in the bad boys. Yes. The newer bad boys.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Yes. He was in, all right. Keith Bogans. No. No. Goes along with what we said yesterday, one of the most underappreciated players. All right. And then.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Exactly. If I don't know you, that means we're, I appreciate it. And finally, Jody Meeks. I told you the other day. Used him all the time on 2K. Great three-point shooter for the Philadelphia 76s. There you go. That's how you. You know him, no, it was too.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Yep. Now, let me just, part of this is Max was in Australia, but it also shows riding something we say. Which is we take for granted that these recruits know Kentucky's history. And the reality is they don't. No. Some of them now barely know John Watt might not know John Wall, right? Yeah, the guys now, their heroes were, you know, Brandon Fox.
Starting point is 00:16:38 You don't think. No, that's exactly. It's Fox and Monk. Yeah. Booker or something like that. Those are their heroes, not Wall in that group. that so many of us thought they would say. To be fair, I think Mack should give us some Australian athletes to see if we know who they are.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Yeah, exactly. Thor. Wolverine. I know Greg Norman. I told you the other day, though, in Australia, they did play that game. So when Kentucky had that awesome recruiting class and they were going five for five, they played either, now, I could be wrong, but North Carolina or Duke or something early in the season, maybe. Yes, they did. They showed that on ESPN, and that was the time when everyone was like, oh, college basketball is cool, and everyone was watching.
Starting point is 00:17:15 I remember watching that game. Really? Well, there you go. So see, even that 2015 team went everywhere. Tell me about Stockton Mortgage. Starting point is 00:19:28 you already know there's a lot to break down. Gorsha accusing Kelly of sleeping with a merry man. They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew. Pinky has financial issues. I like the bougie style of Housewives' show. I think it looks like it's going to be interesting. On the podcast, Reality with the King, I, Carlos King.

Starting point is 00:22:14 Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever. you get your podcast. Welcome back. It is. Thank you Sports Radio here live at Shady Race. Text machine 772-745254. One person writes, Matt, I'd like for you and Ryan to play a game with Max. UK athlete or TV news anchor?
Starting point is 00:22:38 Oh, I love that. I love that. UK athlete. Well, I don't get to play. Well, do you know a lot of Lexington TV anchors? Uh, Louisville ones. Okay, he wouldn't know that. All right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:22:49 UK athlete or Lexington TV anchor? Bill Bryant. Uh, I know Bear Bryant. I'm going to say Bill is a TV anchor. TV anchor! Yay! Well done. Well done.
Starting point is 00:23:05 All right. UK athlete or TV anchor, John Lindgren. Oh, sounds like a TV anchor? TV anchor. He's two for two. Yep. Well, actually, what do you do? Cliff Hawkins.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Cliff Hawkins. That sounds like more of a basketball player to me. Yay! And how everyone has Cliff as a first name. Yeah, Cliff was a terrible pick. Finally, UK athlete or TV anchor, Roger Hardin. Related to James, maybe. So basketball player?
Starting point is 00:23:43 Correct! There you go. See, I know my stop. He nailed it. Shannon four-for-four on UK athlete or TV anchor Bill Meck. Isaac Humphreys, basketball player. If anyone has any other suggestions of names, we'll throw out there because I thought you'd get stumped with Roger Hardin. I thought that sounded like that could be a television anchor.
Starting point is 00:24:04 I just heard of James Harden. All right, let's do KSR Parlay last week for the first time this season. It hit. Yeah. Well, come on, we deserve a better reaction to that. Come on. There we go. Makes up for all those losses. Well, first of all, at plus 750, Shannon, that means we're up for the year. That means we are up for the year. So we'll do one.
Starting point is 00:24:24 We don't have Drew. He's been weighing us down. This is going to be another money line. So this is just pick them to win. I'm going to lead off first, and I'm going to help us get good odds. I'm picking an underdog to win. This is not cover the spread. It's just money line win.
Starting point is 00:24:40 I'm picking Michigan to be Wisconsin or to be Washington on the road. That was yours. Michigan is a one and a half point underdog, so I've got Michigan to win on the road against Wisconsin. That's the first leg. Max. I was also going to go an underdog, but I do love the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this week. But I will go, my theory in betting, as always, take the team that you think has no chance at the spread. I think Texas A&M is terrible. I think Missouri is a really good football team.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Somehow Texas A&M and minus two and a half, I'll take Texas A&M. Texas A&M to beat Missouri. Yeah, to beat Missouri. All right, so Texas A&M, Michigan, Ryan, what's yours? I'm also going to pick an underdog. Oh, we're going to have huge odds on this one. I think if we get too high, they won't let us do it.
Starting point is 00:25:23 But go ahead. I'm going to pick Florida at home over Central Florida. I like that one. I can see that. So you're going Florida. Yeah. Florida, A&M and Michigan. Shannon, you got some weight off.
Starting point is 00:25:35 You can pick one that's a seven-point spray. You can pick a big one. What do you want? Well, I won at Michigan, but you took it. I'm just going to, I mean, I don't know. I'm just scrolling, trying to pick one on the fly. How about Boston College on the road? They're a one-point dog against Virginia.
Starting point is 00:25:48 I like Boston College. These odds are going to be huge with all these underneath. Nice. So we're going to have Boston College, A&M, Michigan, and Florida. That will pay like 25 to 1. So bet it. They may not let us. We will put a version of that up.
Starting point is 00:26:04 We'll see. Hopefully we get a win. If we win you all money at 25 to 1, I think that will be pretty nice. Who's up next? Hunter is up next. Hunter, go ahead, Hunter. Hey, first time long gone. Who are?
Starting point is 00:26:18 All right, so I got two questions for you. So for us to get in the playoffs, we have to either be Tennessee or Texas. Correct? Correct. I mean, I don't think that certainly gets us in, but I think we will be in contention to get in if we win all of our games and we're to beat one of Tennessee and Texas. I don't think that's certain, but I think it's got a good shot. Okay. So then my two questions is you said,
Starting point is 00:26:45 we have a better odds being Texas than Texas. Is it, you know, coaching philosophy? What's the difference that you think that's good? Well, I mean, I admit, I probably have, Ryan, a little bit of a middle block when it comes to Tennessee. I've picked us to beat Tennessee so many times over the years, and then we lose. It's hard for me to pick us to win.
Starting point is 00:27:05 I also think when you're playing Texas, it's the end of the year, they have not played A&M for a decade, and they're going to be playing them for the first time in a decade, the next week, they might be like 10 and 0 in that game, and it doesn't even matter, really, if they win to them. I could see a world where if we're going to pull one off, that's the one. Plus, maybe Arch Manning's still playing, so you're not getting Quinn Ewers.
Starting point is 00:27:30 He's going to be great one day, maybe not quite great yet. That's my scenario. That's it. Kentucky is kind of a trap game for Texas as the way, because of what you just laid out. I want to say they play like Georgia the week before and A&M the week after. And they have not played A&M in 10 years. So I actually think that gives us a little bit of an opening run. That happens.
Starting point is 00:27:50 We see it all the time in college for those trap games, and that's where we can play that spoiler right there. The reason I have a little more optimism against Tennessee is that we were able to slow down Mississippi with our defense. That's the only way you're going to beat Tennessee. You've got to slow them down like they did against Ole Miss. Yeah, I interviewed Brad White once, and he said when you play against Hypoil and Tennessee,
Starting point is 00:28:08 it's either feast or famine. Unfortunately, it's been all feast. So that's been a bit of a trouble for us. But I really think that he can do it when you saw him do the job against Allmiss. I think we're better suited to potentially stop a Tennessee that is a little bit of a gimmicky offense. And if you find out the secret to it, you can stop that. Texas might just be a little bit too big on both sides. So you think Tennessee is easier.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Shannon, what do you think? I'm still thinking about my bad pick on draft king, to be honest with you. Can I change that, by the way? You don't want Boston College? No, would you feel better about Texas A&M over Missouri? I already took it. I guess I'm stuck with Boston. I guess I'm stuck with Boston College then.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Can I make a suggestion? This will make sure that we're able to actually get it under the odds they give me. Yeah. What about Ole Miss South Carolina? Do you think Old Miss is going to win? No. Okay, then we'll take Boston College. Throw South Carolina in this.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I still think South Carolina's got a good chance. Behind the curtain, Shannon was like he was so excited about that Michigan. And then as soon as you picked it, I can't think about anything else. He was like, I mean, I feel so good about this pitch. That's the lock pick of the week. I can't believe they're an underdog. I cannot believe Michigan is an underduring. Yeah, I'm with you, man.
Starting point is 00:29:15 I don't understand. Washington lost to Washington State. They're not even good. They just lost the Rutgers. Every time you think a 50-50 bet is guaranteed, take the side you don't like. Washington. He's exactly right about that. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:29:28 God, Slick up next. Slick, go ahead, slick. Hey, what's up, guys? I got a basketball question. Do you think Jackson Robinson can have an adult-connect-esque year as a scene? the scene? No, but I think he can be really good. I mean, remember, Dalton Connect was like contender for national player the year. I think he came in second to Zach Eadie. I don't think he's going to do that, but can Jackson Robinson be all SEC? Yeah, I think he could be that.
Starting point is 00:29:59 What do you think his ceiling is for points for a game? You think it can be around like 1720? I think he could be set. I appreciate the call. I think he could be 17. I don't think 17 gets you to second in the player of the year ratings, but I think he could be 17. Here's the thing. I don't think he has to be Dalton Connect, because we're going to have so many dudes who can shoot the ball. But the only thing I'm worried about this team, down one, seven seconds left, who has the ball?
Starting point is 00:30:26 Jackson Robinson's got to be that guy in order for us to be really good, in my opinion. We'll see if he is. We'll take a break. Be right back. We're here at Shady Race Kentucky Sports Radio. We're back. Techie Sports Radio here live. My parents are over there receiving guests.
Starting point is 00:30:47 We finally find somebody here that's more popular than Mario is when my parents showed up. 859-280-2287. Text machine, 772-7-7-4. We got a little punter fraternity over here. Yes. Yeah. Carrie Carter is here, the wife of former punter Jimmy Carter. So Carrie got to talk to Max a little bit.
Starting point is 00:31:07 So part of the UK punter alumni? Alumni. Yeah. Do you punters feel a kinship with each other? You all, you know, kick it up in the air and run around. stand with each other in practice. Do you feel punter kinship? Yeah, we reminisce about the one time we got a pat on the back. And, you know, one time, I remember that game where I got a clap as I ran off the field.
Starting point is 00:31:27 And they're like, man, you got to clap. Yeah, I got a clap. You know, Alex Rayner was talking about what he does in practice. As a punter, like, how many punts did you get up each practice? Was there a certain number? That's a good question. How many punts a day? I would do between 150 to maybe 250.
Starting point is 00:31:43 A lot of specialists used to talk about, like, being fresh. I didn't believe in that. Mine was do it as many times you can so you can't mess it up. Did you, so we switched punters and at Old Miss, we still were kicking it 38 yards. It feels like is there just, is there a curse on us? I mean, this kid, you know, kicked at 58 and his first kick, and then it was kind of 38 to 39 every time. Yeah, that disease seems to be easy to catch around the facility at the moment, unfortunately.
Starting point is 00:32:14 But I think it's a little bit of game plan. little bit of how we'd rather height than length. Like, I think you saw him kick a 53 yarder, they brought it back 16. So people's argument would be, well, if you kicked it 53 and they'd bring it back 16. It's just as good as 37. It's just as good at the 38. But my argument would be, let's get better at the coverage. Maybe it wasn't his best punt.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Let's just get back to kicking as far as we can. You talked about when you kicked the idea of, like, directional. So, like, you would look and see where the runner was, and then you would try to kick it in the other direction, right? Like that sounds like a little thing, but you said that's actually really hard to do. Yeah, I mean, we had two things. One is build artificial hang time, which just means get the team more chance to get down coverage by holding onto it. You'd see me run out of the pocket, hold it for as long as you can. Therefore, you're taking away their advantage of just kicking it straight away.
Starting point is 00:33:04 And then also kicking it away from the return. If the ball hits the ground, it's much harder for them to pick it up. So therefore, if he runs to the left, kick it to the right. If he runs to the right, kick it to the left and just play keep you ways. Do you, I mean, the announcers always act like when the ball hits the ground and bounces, they'll go, oh, he got a bad bounce, a good bounce. Do you think that's nonsense? Like, can you kick it to where it's more likely it'll bounce one way or than the other? I mean, yeah, obviously the momentum of the ball means it's going down the field.
Starting point is 00:33:31 But sometimes it comes back. Right, you put backspin on it. You can attempt to make it have backspin. Anyone that says they do that on purpose, probably someone on ESPN that brags about their punting. You can't. Who is that about? You can't do that on purpose. You can try your best.
Starting point is 00:33:46 You can definitely not do it on purpose. But you can definitely give it the best chance. And like I said, it's not about kicking it short and letting it roll, like the old rugby tactics. It's actually kicking it as far as you can, as quick as you can, to get it on the ground and get it past them. Gotcha. Well, good stuff. Well, do you think our guys will get better, and we will kick it more than 37. I believe in Aidan.
Starting point is 00:34:03 Aidan's awesome, and he's a good mate of mine, and I think he'll do really well. 859-2-80-2287. Who's up next? Christian is up next. Christian. go ahead, Christian. Well, what did you do to him, Rick? Why did you make him hang up?
Starting point is 00:34:20 I didn't do nothing. He was talking about wine. Rick, by the way, did you know, I don't know if you know this, you are Max's favorite cast member on the show. Did you know that? I think you told me that before. Max is my favorite football player. Thank you, Rick.
Starting point is 00:34:38 By a mile. I think, Rick, honestly, it's very good having Shannon on the show, and he should be like this all the time and then let you control the phones. I love how you listen to a different radio show while this one's going, and therefore we have to just yell at you a couple of times. Man and many talents, that's me right here. Absolutely, Rick, I picture you right now. Do you have a glass of wine and maybe you're playing some Sinatra in the background during this?
Starting point is 00:35:04 No, I've got the wine chilling at home, so when I get there, I'll be ready for me. Okay, well, good. We've got to get you to your weekend. Who's up next? Jake is up next. Jake is up next. Go ahead, Jake. Hey, Matt, how are you doing this morning?
Starting point is 00:35:17 I'm doing good. Now, Jake, you usually, when you call, Ryan, he's pretty pessimistic. Yeah. Yeah. You can't be pessimistic today, right? We beat Old Miss, got a big basketball season coming. I'm going to assume you're going to be really positive. Ready?
Starting point is 00:35:35 I'm going to be very positive that I'm not sure which game is going to be first. The Champions Classic or the Kentucky and West. Wesleyan game. Oh, you're being positive you don't know the schedule. Okay. Kentucky Wesleyan is an exhibition game, so it'll be first. Kentucky actually plays two regular season games as well before the Champions Classic. So, you know, sometimes that starts our season.
Starting point is 00:36:00 This year, I think it's our third game. And it's in Kentucky Wesleyan's on the 23rd, correct? Yeah, October 23rd. Kentucky Wesleyan is. It's coming up quick. I mean, it's two and a half weeks from now. Our first game is two and a half weeks from today. That's hard to believe.
Starting point is 00:36:23 It is hard to believe, Jake, but it's actually true. It's good to talk to you, man. That's our call today. Whiskey thief call the day right there. That is the whiskey thief call of day. You know, the thing about Jake, made a few words, Shannon, but they always entertain me no matter what. I'm starting to think that Jake and Madison may be the same person just with different calling voices.
Starting point is 00:36:51 Oh, wait a minute. You think that's Madison? Do you not, like, hear the similarities just a little bit? Oh, definitely. You know, so I've met Madison, but I haven't. Wait a minute. Are you still there, Jake? Rick still got me here.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Wait a minute. Are you, Jake, is this actually Madison? No. No. I like that big delay I get I like that big delay I get I say the word and then you actually hear it Okay well thank you Jake
Starting point is 00:37:23 I appreciate the call I don't know Shannon Yeah I think that's actually not a terrible guess In the world Missouri Texas A&M is the only game this week Of ranked teams The only game of ranked teams Max picked Texas A&M So I assume you think he's going to win
Starting point is 00:37:39 By the way if Missouri wins this game Max they're concerned going to playoff. If you look at their schedule, they don't play anybody. If they win this game, because they have like two hard games at the end of the year, but they could probably lose them both and still make it if they win this game. Yep, and they didn't look very good against Vanderbilt. They didn't look great against Shannon's favorite team, Boston College.
Starting point is 00:38:00 So I think that's why I'm picking Texas A&M. I really don't see Missouri as a playoff team this year. And I want my great punner from Murray transferred over there, so I hope they do the best, but I really don't think they're going to win this one. Would it bother you, Ryan, if, Missouri, a team like Missouri that's kind of been on our level or even a little bit below our level. If a team like that were to make the playoff, would that bother you? It would. I've got to be honest, it would definitely bother me because I feel like we're a better
Starting point is 00:38:25 program than Missouri, even though they've got this great record. But like Mack said, they should have lost Vanderbilt and that overtime game. Vanderbilt outplayed them that game. Did you hear what Coach Drinkwitz did practice this week? No. So one of the recruiting staff for them is a boyfriend or, sorry, a sister or a girlfriend. I can't remember which one of someone on the Texas A&M team. Okay.
Starting point is 00:38:46 He's not allowed to be at practice. Bander from the facility. Bander from the facility for this entire week. I like that. Oh, that's interesting. Would you do that? Oh, yeah. 40 of your players or staff members was dating a player or somebody on the other?
Starting point is 00:38:59 Yeah, I mean, for a week, I think you can do without them. It's all right. You've got to get locked in and ready for the game. Then after the game's over, then you can go back to. But you don't think if they were in a relationship, she would tell them things about Missouri. I don't know. I don't know. Things you do for love.
Starting point is 00:39:13 want to take a chance on that. Well, why doesn't, but why doesn't the Texas A&M person tell her to help Missouri? Quit using logic, all right? I think I would ban them. Hey, stop overpaying for sunglasses. If you need sunglasses, come right here to Shady Rays. An independent American-owned company started in Kentucky. This is their second.
Starting point is 00:39:32 So actually, is this their, was this the first or the second? I think it was the first. This is the first one. I think the Louisville one was the second one. Starting point is 00:44:14 Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back. Final segment here, Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Thanks to Max Duffy for joining us today. Drew will be back next week. Remember the schedule coming here. So next week, Friday is Big Blue Madness.
Starting point is 00:44:35 I can't believe it's here so quickly. Saturday will be UK Vandy. Then the next week, that Friday is the blue-white game at Memorial Coliseum. I snuck in there last night, right? You did. I had not been there. I went for a walk, saw it was kind of open, snuck in the door. Yeah, the side door.
Starting point is 00:44:51 There's always a side door. Always a side door. I act like I was supposed to be there, and it is awesome. I know other people have been, because it's been open for games, but it's very, very cool. Everybody that I know that's seen says you would not believe the transformation. It's awesome. That's what I'm, you know, I am really looking forward to getting to be in there for that blue-white thing, just because I was there when Perry Stevenson dunked at the NIT game.
Starting point is 00:45:14 And even though it was a stupid NIT game, it was kind of awesome. I'm not going to lie. They had that atmosphere in there. I'm looking forward to doing it. He used to have the blue-white game was always, and even madness was at Memorial Coliseum. One of the favorite things when they miced up Tubby Smith when they were playing and Wu hit a shot and went down the court with the W over his head. And Tubby's like, what the hell was that? I don't remember that.
Starting point is 00:45:38 But that's, yeah. Yeah. Well, they had Big Blue Madness there when they were Batman. Batman and Robin? Yeah. I'll tell you a cool story. You hear me. If you listen to Fade this, I do it every week. And if you listen to, although we took this week off, but I listen, every time Oklahoma State comes up, Shannon, I always mock Mike Gundy because I'm always like that dude is such a goober. But so in the interest of fair play, I want to tell a cool story about Mike Gundy for a second. Mike Gunn, you know how coaches all do their weekly radio show. Okay. Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State this year decided.
Starting point is 00:46:13 to do the weekly radio show, rather than doing it at a restaurant or rather than doing it at the school, they decided to go to a local retirement home to where older people live and come and do the show there. And I saw a picture. Basically, the whole home, they all come, the retirement community. They all dress up in Oklahoma State gear every week, and they get like this massive crowd and every week it produces this big atmosphere. Mike Gundy says it's one of the favorite things he's done as a coach. I'm sure the folks that live there love it getting a chance to do it. Ryan, I always give him a hard time because he annoys me, but that is actually a very cool
Starting point is 00:46:54 thing that he did. That's my favorite story of the week. We had the slobbering hog yesterday, but this was awesome. It's a little different. This is a great story that the more schools should reach out and do stuff like that. You know what? I see Mark Pope doing stuff like that. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:47:07 I mean, Mark Pope's done. a ton of stuff people haven't even seen, which I think is very cool. So, Max, I do think you and I like to make fun of Gundy, but that's actually a very cool thing he does. I do, and a lot of the stuff that he does in public seems a little bit questionable sometimes, like promoting what he promoted during the offseason with one of his players. But sometimes, you know, obviously he's lasted for the certain period of time that he's had because he's a good guy. And the players aren't going to respect that he's not going to stick around if he wasn't a good guy and did lots of good things. Also, Cal and Miami play tomorrow in the college game day game. Shannon, I encourage people to go, look, Cal's Twitter game might be the best trolling Twitter game.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Yeah. They put out a story on their Twitter that people believed, which said that when Miami's team bus came to the state line of California, that they were stopped because their cars had too many admissions, and they weren't. And it led to all these Miami fans going, stupid liberal California, blah, blah, blah. and it was just a joke. I actually think it's hilarious how much trolling they've gone in the, as they call it, the woke versus Coke game. First of all, that's a great name.
Starting point is 00:48:18 And I love that California's Twitter feed. It just becomes satire at this point. The people actually are dumb enough to believe it. When have you ever cared about Cal Football? Never. Never. This is great for them. And so one of the last six schools to ever get game day will have it tomorrow morning.
Starting point is 00:48:31 It will be. It starts at 9. That is 6 a.m. Ryan, local time. Oh, my goodness. So it is 6 a.m. So the people, it will be dark when it starts. They better hope they're awoke at that time of the morning.
Starting point is 00:48:44 Good one. All right, who's next? Christian is back on the line. Christian, go ahead, Christian. Hey, first time, long time. Who are? What's up? So I got two quick comments, one football and one basketball.
Starting point is 00:48:58 So one football, I've got a unique connection with Jackson Dart. All right, what is it? here in Utah for the last 20 years as a teacher and assistant principal. So it was at Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah that Jackson Dart played and I was the assistant principal at. Well, so did you root for him or against him on Saturday? Are you a loser too then? A lot. Yeah, I mean, did you root for him or against him? No, I'm a lifestyle, a long Kentucky fans. I had to root for Kentucky, but I always root for Jackson London not playing against Kentucky. Well,
Starting point is 00:49:38 all right. Well, I appreciate it. You know, Kentucky did such a good job, Max, against Jackson Dart. I mean, I was listening to a couple of college football podcasts talking about how Dart would come to the sideline and would say Elaine Kiffin, he was confused by what he was seeing. Apparently, Kentucky's defense was waiting until the last so this is what I read. I guess Jackson Dart, when he gets down to get the ball, they sort of spotted
Starting point is 00:50:02 on film that he stares at the ground like a half second too long and the coaches noted it so they would wait until he got down in that and then they would move one of the defensive players would move most players would see it because their eyes were up but they noticed dark keeps his head down too long and they exploited it little things like that are the kind of things that make brad white really good absolutely it shows the detail that goes into all the pregame you know during the week leader there's a lot of talk about him winning the hysman i think we kind of put that to bed and I did that end it, don't you think? Absolutely, and then I saw a fair few old Miss fans saying that we were stealing signals,
Starting point is 00:50:36 which I don't think they exist anymore now with the new helmets, but they did start a big thing saying we were stolen signals. Shannon, Ole Miss fans saying we had to have been stealing signals or else there's no way we could have known what they were doing. And it's like they don't know that now they come through your helmet. There aren't signals. I'm starting to think they're the wittiest fan base in the SEC. I mean, you talk about that, and then they didn't want you to run a cord through a door,
Starting point is 00:50:59 which, by the way, we're doing just... We're doing it right now, and nobody's called the police on us yet. This is what they said is banned at Old Miss. A cord through a door. They said you can't do it. We've done it for three hours. Yes. But I thought that was hilarious, complaining about the signs.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Said we did the same thing against Georgia, Ryan. That was the reason we were close. We stole their signs to. And if I'm not mistaken, this was somebody who was claiming he had a source, like it was a reporter or something claiming that he had facts. He did not have that. The source I have is when the game was over. We won, and they walked out, Sam.
Starting point is 00:51:30 Who's up next? Got Bob up next. Bob, go ahead, Bob. Maddice is Bob and James Town? Tell your brother. What's going on? Oh, he got to apologize. You cannot encourage him with your applause.
Starting point is 00:51:46 My mom just applauded you, Bob. Whose side are you on, Mom? She's a lady and a scholar. Anyway, that's a great win for the Reds getting Dito Francona. I mean, the guy, he's great with younger players. and put the wheels back on the big red machine. Isn't it Terry Francona? Yeah, Terry.
Starting point is 00:52:07 Is his nickname Tito? Isn't the Tito? He's the scooter man. What's the scooter man? He likes to ride a scooter. He rides a scooter to work. Wait a minute. He rides a scooter to work?
Starting point is 00:52:22 Yeah, from his apartment to the ball field in Cleveland. Well, interesting. People in Cincinnati love scooters. so maybe that'll be what it is. Sure enough, he's not allowed. Look at that. Oh, he rides, okay. Like a Vespa.
Starting point is 00:52:39 I was thinking one of those like bird things. He rides a Vespa. Yeah. Yeah, like Cal does. That's right. Yeah, exactly. All right, well, thank you, Bob. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:52:48 All right, so let's get into the weekend. Let's quickly make our picks. Tennessee, Arkansas. Any chance Arkansas stays with Tennessee. No, I think Tennessee wins in a blowout, unfortunately. I do too. I mean, Arkansas likes to play fast. Also, with Bobby Petrino,
Starting point is 00:53:01 calling the plays now, but still Tennessee is there on another level, I think. Big chance. They didn't look, to me, Tennessee didn't look that great against Oklahoma. Oklahoma looked terrible, and they still only beat them by 10, so I like Arkansas. Alabama, wait a minute, you like Arkansas?
Starting point is 00:53:15 To win? Not win, but keep it real close. Alabama, 22 and a half point favorite at Vandy. Can your boys stay with Alabama? Vandy's better, but they have been in the past, but Alabama's just too good. I think that'll be another blowout, unfortunately. Trap game for Vandy. They're overlooking Alabama.
Starting point is 00:53:31 Banda. Vandy's better, but they ain't beaten Bama. Last thing, woke or Coke? Coke. Woke, just so they can troll again. Dirty liberal. I'm picking woke. Thank you all very much for being here. And Shady Ray's. We really appreciate the crowd here. Now, remember, Mario is we're doing Veterans Appreciation Day tomorrow at the bar.
Starting point is 00:53:57 20% off. If you see Mario, you can thank him. Because he picked Navy Air Force is his game of the week. We will do that. Have a great weekend. This will be the last one we get without a game for a while. Enjoy it. See your family.
