Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.

Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing, and honestly, just kind of lonely.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the psychology of your 20s is breaking down the science
behind the biggest roadblocks we face.
I was six years into my career, the 80-hour weeks, and just the first one in, the last one out, and I ended up burning out.
There was a large chunk of my 20s that I, like, was just so wanting to, like, be out of that phase out of my skin.
And I just, like, really regret not living in the present more.
You don't need to have everything figured out right now.
You just need to understand yourself a little bit better.

Now here's Matt Jones.
Welcome everyone in Kentucky Sports Radio.
Wednesday, October the 9th.
I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill.
It is Wings Day, Dollar Wings All Day, Evening, Trivia Tonight, baseball.
All four baseball games on today.
Yeah.
It is an exciting baseball, the divisional series.
We got folks here.
We got Andy from Somerset.
We got Garrett County in the house, Garrett Football.
What's the Garrett County Baskat?
The Lions, Garrett County lines.
Golden Lions.
Whoa, my man, golden lines.
Yeah, that's right.
It's any line.
Not just any line.
They're golden.
Clark's Pubbant Shop is 859-2-80-2287.
A vision auto glass 772-7474, and this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office,
you call T.J. he'll make them pay.
I was just talking to Drew during the break.
You go back to the history of KSR.
I think what we're going to give away this week,
next week. Well, really, we're giving it away next week, but we're going to do a whole thing
with it. Is the third best giveaway we've ever given on the show? The first best giveaway was the
free trip to the Bahamas. That's pretty good. That was pretty good. Where you got to go with the
Kentucky team to the Bahamas, and the guy complained about the flight we booked, Shannon, even on a
free trip to that's so typical. I remember that was that was good. Second probably best giveaway
is one time just out of the,
somebody gave me lower arena
champions classic tickets
to go to Chicago,
and I just decided to give away
the whole trip.
Probably should have checked with the station
before I did that because I ended up having to pay for that.
I mean,
it was just a hotel,
and it was just one night,
but still,
you know,
so that,
and that was a lot more expensive hotel
than I thought it was going to be.
But nevertheless,
it was still nice.
We did a whole contest.
that was the one we did where you, I like, we drew a county out of a hat and you had to go to a place in that county.
We'll do that again one day.
I don't know.
I don't know when.
And then this, I think, is the third best one.
We're going to give away because what we're going to give away as part of that blue-white game next Friday is something that like, it's kind of a priceless experience.
If you're a UK, there are people who would argue it might be better than one and two.
So I will talk more about that.
Well, I mean, if you just like, okay, you can buy a trip to the Baham.
It's true.
You can buy a trip to the Champions Classic, but can you buy sitting on the bench with the UK basketball team?
Well, you probably can if you got a ton of money.
Can you buy being part of the intro for a player?
Oh, that's a big deal.
Can you buy that?
No, you can go to Bahamas anytime.
You can go to the Bahamas, right?
You can go to a game.
But can you, when they announce a player come out,
a role in that? Not without going to jail.
Matter of fact, I'm going to go ahead and tell you one of the pieces of what we're giving
away. You've got me excited. If you win, you get to pick a person to do a specialized pregame
DAP with a player. And you get to choose it with the player. I like that. I love it. Who
wouldn't want to do that? I see what you're saying about it. You can't buy that. You can't
buy that. You can't just buy do a
DAP with a player. They would say get
out of here. Get out of my face.
And then you can do it for your kid or whatever.
But like, so they'll go
starting it, center
from blah, blah, blah,
Amari Williams. And you could come out
and, you know, do the kid and play dance.
I don't think you should pick that one, but you could do
whatever you wanted there.
We're giving that away on this show.
That's just part of the package.
Oh, it's like, there's like 10 things.
That's amazing. So it's really, when he
when they told me the details, I was like, that's really good.
Yeah. That's pretty crazy.
Yeah. I mean, that's better than we're going to get.
Can I go and give Mark Pope a nougie if I want to?
He's exactly right.
You can go up to Mark Pope and poke him in the belly button.
That's part of it, too.
What a package.
I don't know if that's part of it, but I bet you could throw it in.
No, Pope, he'd probably let you.
Yeah.
You go up to me give him a nougie.
Marky, Marky.
So we'll do that a little later.
Well, now I'm really anxious to hear the rest of the package because that's a pretty good start right there.
All right, so here today, here's what I want to do.
First of all, everyone I saw yesterday and last night, all they wanted to talk about was root potato.
So it's clear that people have opinions about that.
So I want to do that.
Also, UK Vandy play Saturday.
That's big.
UK Media Day was yesterday.
And I have thoughts.
And I think Drew and everybody does what.
They did the men and the women at the same time.
and I thought that and it was interesting meeting our team and sort of having our initial thoughts
and then last night without Shannon we all went and saw Tyler Childers in what was an absolutely
awesome experience which one of those rhyme would you do you want to start with Tyler Childers
okay yeah all right so four five of us went the three of us Mario and Billy Shannon of course
was too cool.
I'm voting.
You guys are undecided if you're going to vote or not.
I'm going to vote.
That's why you went, right?
We went to try to get you to vote.
I guess you're doing that.
But people asked where he was, right?
Including one member of the band.
You know, a member of the band, CJ, is a regular listener and said, where's Shannon?
And I said, I tried to make up an excuse for him.
Did you say I saw him at Bourbon and Beyond?
I said he had some plumbing to do.
I mean, there were things going on.
Baseball was on.
Sorry.
They were sad.
I think they were sad.
As far as the concert, 250 people in the brewery part of Country Boy, and it was absolutely awesome.
I mean, for me, you know, probably my favorite artist, standing that close,
listening to doing a concert in that size venue, you're just not going to get that very much.
And the Country Boy guys, D.H, were awesome to us.
It was absolutely great.
Then when it was over, got a chance to say hi to him, and, you know,
I did one of those things that people do where you're like,
you know, I saw you, met you in Amsterdam and, but I did, you know,
and he was like, of course.
I remember that.
He goes, there weren't that many people there.
And I said, yes, that's right.
They weren't that many people there.
And that was really neat and got to see the guys in the band.
I know.
Now, for you all, you're not kind of as regular about going to these as I am.
What did you think?
Well, like I said, that's my first time I had seen a show of his outside of the flood relief
benefit concert he did at Ruff Arena last year.
So I was super excited.
And I just remember we're kind of just standing there thinking, you know, this is a major country star that just played to 50,000 people, just was at Madison Square Garden.
And he's right there.
And we're right there in front of him, you know.
With 200, 250 people.
It was incredible.
And he's so good.
I mean, just to be that close and, you know, he gets the crazy eyes when he really gets into it.
You know, he hits those notes.
It was really a cool experience.
And I loved it.
And thank you, D.H. for inviting us.
And they had, like, it was, you know, he did his whole base.
Like you he played like there were 25,000 people, but it was for just the folks there and then the ones watching on the street.
Yeah, D.H. even warned Ryan and me before it started, like, hey, they're playing the same way they just played at Burma and Beyond.
Like, this is going to be loud, full band. They're not toning it down because it's a small brewery.
It still sounded great. I mean, yes. I think that was my six time seeing him.
The other five I've already forgotten about. That was so amazing.
That was awesome. I mean, he played all my favorite songs.
Yeah. I don't know if people know this, but he's very, like, kind of funny.
Like when he, just in between songs, kind of just talking to the crowd, off the cuff stuff.
I just really enjoyed it from start to finish.
Yeah, it was great.
That part was awesome.
And, you know, he put it all into it.
He played something, he, like, played little parts of every album.
So you got to hear some of the really old stuff, but he also even had stuff from his new, new albums.
Now, Mario, he went.
This was his first, come on over here.
This was his first ever country concert.
As a matter of fact, go further, first ever white person concert.
Yes.
Which I liked.
Mario, what were your impressions of the Tyler Childers experience?
Everyone wanted their picture with Mario.
It was like they were interested in him being there.
It was incredible, man.
A lot of not too much people.
It was kind of like a very close setting.
Everybody was in one area.
And I'm a fan of his music, man.
He can really sing.
He has that strong, he has a little bit of gospel in him as well.
Yeah, for sure.
There's some gospel in there.
I'm definitely a fan.
You said he had soul.
He has soul. Yes, he has a lot of soul, man. A lot of strength in his voice.
Now, what do you think of being in like a country concert crowd?
I enjoyed it, man. You were slapping your knee a little bit.
I was clapping. I was. You were clapping a little early for the clapping.
You know, he was clapping on beach and like during the slow songs.
You know, he was like, that's all right.
I think I just enjoyed the environment.
Don't tell Mario had a fan.
Yeah, that's right.
Just being around the crowd, getting, you know, I'm a big music fan.
As long as it sounds good, like, I'm a fan of it.
What, uh, by song six, you seem to be drunk.
A little buzz, a little buzz, Matt.
I wouldn't say drunk, a little bit buzzed.
We got two Mamosa Billy, and we have beer and a half Mario.
Beer and a half Mario showed up, Shannon.
That's what I heard.
And you were like also doing that hip-hop, hooray, wave your hands in the air,
which you were the only one doing that in the entire place.
You were trying to get that going.
think that ever worked. It's okay if it didn't. You know, I would be the only one. If I'm the only
one doing it, that's fine, Matt. I enjoyed myself and, you know, like I said, I like to have a
good time with good music. Yes. Well, why'd you like, that's your first time really hanging out
with us. Did you enjoy that? Yeah, it was fun, man. It was the whole crew was there. Shannon was
missing out. I was kind of sad Shannon wasn't able to come, but it was over. He's too good for
about him. He's always too good to hang out with us. Maybe next time. If I've seen to
remember, none of you guys come to hang out with me at Louder Than Life or Bourbon and Beyond.
I have been to, first of all, I've been the larger than life with you,
and you know how miserable that is for me, and I was there for you,
and you and parent and parent left me, and then you left me,
and I was by myself in that crowd.
There was a lot of people there.
But, Brian, it was awesome, and thanks to Childers,
the Hood to the Holler people, country boy for having us there.
One of my favorite parts of the night is when Tyler introduced the rumors of his band,
because he was really funny.
He's got something to say about each person,
And you say he does that every time.
He does that every time.
And they're like from Versailles.
One's from Prestonsburg.
Athens.
Athens.
One of them live in Ashland.
Some of them was one of them's from a place I hadn't even heard of.
Red Hat, I think, was what they said.
I didn't say that.
I never even heard of that place.
But it was very cool.
And CJ, who's a fan of this show, came up and like knew a reference from the show yesterday,
which was absolutely awesome.
Well, I'm glad you went, Mario.
Thank you, ma.
I hope, tell Shannon he missed out.
Shannon, you definitely missed out.
Sorry, man, I'll get the next one.
So, well, 859-280-2287.
While we were there, the question I kept getting asked is the same question I get asked all the time,
which is, is the UK basketball team going to be good?
So yesterday we got to go to Media Day with all of them.
What did you think, Drew?
What did you think of the crew?
Me and you went, Ryan did not go?
Like most things, it's just a completely different experience than it's been.
I think this is my 16th.
Oh, that's gross.
I just, that's the first time I thought of that.
So, yeah, but first time, I mean, with Cal, they're all so young,
and I think they were trained to maybe shy away from the media a little bit.
So, I mean, even though we love talking to them, the answers weren't always the greatest.
You asked these guys, I mean, these are grown adults, you ask them questions, and it's three minutes later.
I mean, you almost even don't get your questions in.
they're just so thorough and thoughtful in their answers.
It was just a different experience.
I really didn't have time to talk to everyone.
It went so fast because of how long.
This is an old group, and you can tell.
Like, they talk like, you know, for those of you that have had kids in college,
they come back a little bit of a different person than they arrived, right?
Well, these guys are in the, you know, a lot of them have finished college.
I mean, four of the guys on the team already graduated, you know.
So this is a much, much different group.
But it was interesting because if you went and talked to Travis Perry and Trit Noah,
you could kind of tell they were young compared to the others.
It's just like it's so you're used to being around UK players of this age.
It's been a long time since we have been around those.
Yeah, because you're used to talking to 18, 19-year-old kids.
Now you're talking to 22, 23-year-old grown men.
And it is a big difference.
And I heard a lot of the clips have been played since yesterday.
And you can tell they are like mature adults.
You're talking to.
One thing I've never talked to players with before until yesterday was investing in banking.
But Travis Perry said Andrew Carr goes around and talks to all of them about investing
and how they're spending their money.
And I'm just sitting back my head like, this is so different.
Wow.
I asked Travis Perry, what's the most threes he's ever made?
He said he tries to shoot 500 a day.
Just think about logistically how long that would take.
And he said the most he's ever made is 97 out of 100.
and he said he once made 48 in a row.
That's insane.
I mean, that's literally insane.
I don't know if I hit 48 layups in a row.
I'm certain you could not.
And as a matter of fact, if you ever want to try, I'm glad to rebound.
I thought this at Pro Day watching him.
He makes threes like Ryan misses putts.
It's just same percentage, but in reverse.
Unbelievable.
859-28027.
We'll talk a little bit more about the vibes there.
Petino, UK Vandy.
and more. We'll be right back.

What's up, fam, this Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm CJ Toledano,
and our podcast Point Game is about,
defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

I'm an actor.
I'm a comedian.

Norsha accusing Kelly of sleeping with a merry man.
They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew.
Pinky has financial issues.
I like the bougie style of Housewives of Housewives show.
I think it looks like it's going to be interesting.

Welcome back.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio.
859-2-80-2287.
Text machine 772-774-5-254.
It's Red Bush, Kentucky.
That's where the guy was from?
Yeah, it's Jesse.
He's from Red Bush, Kentucky.
I mean, I assume it's in the mountain somewhere.
I think it's close to Olive Hill, maybe.
Johnson County.
Johnson County.
Okay.
So Jesse, the fiddle player that was on our show.
Yes, he teaches him more Head State, too.
That's amazing.
Yeah.
859-2-8027.
Couple open lines.
I'd be interested.
Those of you that didn't get in on the Patino thing yesterday, you're going to clap him or boo him?
We had some strong thoughts about some of them.
I had some people write me say they very much agreed with Marcia.
And then I had some people who were very upset about what Marcia said.
So I think her opinion is in the minority, but it's a.
a minority that feels pretty strongly about it, Ryan.
Do you think that's fair?
Yeah, I think there were a lot of people in Marcia's fraternity for a long time,
but just in the past, what, six months, those people were starting to change their lines a little bit.
I think a lot of them have changed.
Marsha has not, but I think a lot of them have.
A guy here just brought me the purple, the grape, strawberry, gummy nerd clusters,
which I do not need to be eating, but I'm probably going to eat anyway.
He is the guy who, if anybody listened to a postman,
game show. He called from Georgia and said there was a woman he had met in Iowa, and he was trying to
decide if it was worth pursuing it. And I said, love will find a way. Don't let Georgia and Iowa
keep you from your heart's dream. And he drove up to Illinois this weekend, and they met,
first of all, the fact that she met you somewhere. That's a good sign, right? If you made you go all the
way to Iowa, then that might have been. So that's a good sign. And he said it went really well.
I'm going to clap.
I have to.
I'm happy for him.
Yes.
It's got to be kind of a nervous experience.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
You're driving all the way over there and then you don't know.
So now we're all invested.
Now we've got to keep up.
One day I'll tell you, I don't want to get into it now because we've got a lot to.
But I have a story like that from years ago.
Like I'm talking 20 plus years ago.
And it didn't go.
I love to hear the story.
That way, sometimes we'll tell it.
Remind me at some point.
Sometimes seems like no.
It didn't go like that for me when I made a trip like that.
You told a story on the radio here at one time.
One of your friends, they met in Asheville or something?
No, no.
Two of my friends, one was at law school at Duke, but from Kentucky, and one was in Kentucky,
and they would meet in Beckley, West Virginia, and do their sort of weekend love.
And so we used to.
It's a very romantic.
Weekend love.
And that's the best way to say it.
My mom's listing.
I'm just saying that.
I had a different name for the town, considering that the two of them,
but I will call it now the weekend love town.
And you said, I think they did that for a long time?
Long time.
Like every other weekend, they would meet in Beckley, West Virginia,
and see?
It's like a lifetime movie.
And renew whatever it is they were renewing.
I won't say their vows.
But anyway, 859-28027.
Let me say one thing before we get to phones about the media day, like the vibes of the team.
Okay.
you know, Drew made this point yesterday.
It's hard to talk about this stuff because it's, I'm telling you,
I'm not trying to just throw the former staff out the door and throw them, you know,
under the bus because that's, but you can't help but notice how things have changed
drew in the last 15 years.
And to do that, you have to talk about how it was, right?
So on a personal level for me personally, it's the first time I felt welcome in that building in a long time.
But it's not just about me.
Just in general watching it, you would some, not Cal's first few years, but as it went on,
it always felt like to me, Drew, everyone, the players, the staff, everyone was walking on eggshells.
Right?
sort of a, there's just so much tension, you could almost feel it.
Yesterday was different.
I mean, the men and women went together, right?
Yeah, shared the day.
I don't think that's happened.
Has it?
I don't think it's ever happened.
I don't remember it ever happened.
And here's the good thing.
Everyone stayed around for the women, and I bet a lot of people wouldn't necessarily
have even come.
To be quite frank with you, I probably wouldn't have been there for the women.
I ended up being there because it was there.
That's a very gracious thing to do.
share this stage with all of these people that were there.
The staff was around and like you were able to, like it used to be you would talk to someone
and if they would look around to worry if anybody was seeing them like, it's not like.
It felt like, you know, the assistant coaches are just roaming around.
And the players, like the players had clearly been told, showcase your personality.
You know, don't say we're just here to be focused on winning.
They were joking around.
and in a fun. I just, the vibe was so much different for me in a positive way, and I could feel it.
You're there more than I am. Did you feel like that?
Yeah, there was a lot more openness. You made a good point about just kind of joking around.
Maybe it's his personality, but I was talking to Mario Williams, and we were talking about English breakfast.
We ended up talking for a minute about English breakfast. Then he told me, Pope's trying to get him to come out to the Beatles at madness.
You know, it used to be, don't you say a word about madness.
Lots of, you know, they were keeping their secrets of their songs, but they were just so open to talk about whatever we want to talk, bring it up, and they were like an open book. That's what just made it so refreshing. It also made it hard to get to everyone yesterday. Only got about five of them. But there's also. It felt like we're having conversations with the players, not so much just kind of trying to get through this.
There was also a wide-odd happiness. And again, I loved having all that talent. I mean, it was so, it was awesome being like, what is Anthony Davis going to be like? What is Nerlins Newell going to?
to be like what are they like that that had it was a unique kind of excitement but there's something
about watching dudes who clearly are appreciative to be here like there's something about watching
dudes who you can tell this kid played at fairly dickens not even the whole dickens just like
fairly dickens he played at dayton he played it Drexel right this kid's been on a Mormon mission
This kid's from this state.
They all had an excitement.
And I remember I asked Kobe Brea.
I was like, you know, you play Duke in a few weeks.
Like, are you excited about that?
And he said, and his answer was something, I wish I had taped it to the effect of really excited to play Duke.
But you know what?
I'm more excited to be here.
Like, could you write a better answer to that question?
I mean, could you, like, it was nice and neat.
Now, obviously, they got to win.
Like, being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed doesn't matter if we lose by 20.
Amen.
But to see that level of appreciation for the front of the uniform, I thought was very cool.
A lot of them work saying, this place is just so special.
It was almost like Pope's message.
I mean, not like they have received Pope's message, and they're spreading it, too.
But it was just so much Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, not, I know this is my,
step in my path.
Yeah.
It was like, I am at Kentucky.
This is unbelievable.
That's a great point.
It's not, look, the other guys, I think enjoyed being here, love the fans, etc.
But it was a step in their path.
For these guys, it feels like this is where I wanted to be.
And yes, I want to keep doing things, but there's real value in being where I am right now.
And I just been a long time since it felt like that, and I just liked it.
Now, if they don't win, I won't like it anymore.
But for now, I actually really liked it.
We'll take a break.
We will take your calls.
We return.
Ski-S-S-I.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J.
He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
I'm a sucker for this song.
I'm not going to lie to you.
I know it's like, it's kind of, I don't know if it's an old person song.
Maybe it is, but I love that.
I think that is such a beautiful song.
Love Can Build a Bridge.
A beautiful song.
song and their voices are just perfect.
It is.
And then I'd prefer to think of them like that.
I know they had a lot of issues through the course of their life,
but I like to think of the Judds like that because that is such a beautiful song.
Yep.
Like both of them at their best.
859-2807.
We got folks on.
I'm going to go to the phones.
One person writes, Matt, I'm excited to have a Kentucky team that I feel like will come
back to Kentucky when they're done.
Well, to be fair with the Cal players, they come back.
It'll be interesting to see.
I do think it'll be interesting to see over the next couple years,
how many of them come back with Cal not here.
I do think later in life,
they'll all come back because everybody needs like a home, right?
Like home is,
and when it comes to your college basketball home,
this will be their home.
Carl Towns did an interview with Shannon Sharp in which he said,
I'm Kentucky through and through.
And, you know,
I believe that's the case.
But the kind of people who will like come and live here,
there's probably more of those on this team than maybe guys who played in the NBA.
Yeah, but we just saw recently.
Willie is a great example of when his NBA career ended.
I mean, he was just all over election.
I know that was part being on the La Familia team,
but he told us on this show he's considering like actually living here and retired,
you know, living out the rest of his life here.
And I think you could see others do that too when their final basketball days are over.
Not many, but that's just how much they appreciate it.
Yeah.
Who's up first, Shannon?
Takashi.
Takashi.
How are you?
I'm doing great, Matt.
Good.
I'm not a long-time listener to the show.
That's all right.
But I am a first-time caller.
I'm still who I?
You don't have to be a long time.
We need short-time people.
I had somebody told me they just started listening since April and haven't missed an episode.
So we got to keep adding new listeners.
So nice to have you.
Yeah, yeah.
I just, I'm normally a podcast listener because normally I'm at work.
So I'm like a day behind.
but the people that call in that say that you had chased Callaway drive me nuts.
And I just like,
Mario, did you get that clip posted yet on the guy on the call yesterday?
Did you get, he's posted right now.
So he's going to put that up.
I'm ready to get flamed for that as well.
I appreciate you saying that, Toggin, but like,
if you're a new listener, just know I was getting that every day
from like January to March last year.
and then when he left, you know, but it's been a while since we've heard that.
I started watching, I started listening about the time, you know, the ULVal game with the Mark
Scoops scuttlebutt to Texas A&M.
Okay, got you.
So I got most of the season last year.
And, you know, what you provide for KSR, you know, Petino used to say that, that there was a
player on the 96 team that was the straw that Sturk.
Kentucky's drink.
And that was Antoine Walker.
And you were the Antoine Walker of KSR.
And you cried so much.
You should see a shimmy.
Yeah.
Yeah, I don't.
Hopefully, well, I'll be,
I like, I just,
I just appreciate everything that you do and don't get
frustrated with those callers because, you know,
some of the,
I live in Colorado.
So when I listen to the show, it really helps me connect.
Well, thank you very much.
Well, that's, I, I get that a lot.
about the people living away, and I appreciate it.
And thank you very much.
Thanks for listening.
You know, the guy yesterday, a lot of people wanted to talk about the guy saying that
it was my fault that Cal got run off.
Let me ask you, put me out of it for a second.
What percentage of the fans do you think, Ryan, as of today, going into Big Blue
Madness Friday, how many do you think Ms. Cow?
Less than 10%.
even if whether you were a supporter or thought there needed to move on
Drew how many do you think like missing and I'm like
I wish he was here because I think that number is actually very very small
no I agree with Ryan I mean I know people who were mad at me
for not for being over Cal defending him even after the fact
but now they're all in on Pope and have been like yeah I
didn't see it at the time but I'm all in I think that's what's all
See, I think that's what's awesome is I think Pope has even won, like won some of those people over.
Because I think when Cal left, I think there was probably a third, maybe a fourth of the fan base was really bummed.
There was probably half that were ready for him to go.
And then there was a quarter that were like, well, maybe it was time for him to go, but I don't really want him to go.
You know, are we going to do better?
I feel like those numbers have flipped to where the people like that call, I think, are a very Ryan small group.
I agree.
So do you think is there a world where we start to feel cowed the way we're starting to feel about Petino again?
Of course.
Well, I'm never going to say never, but it's going to be after he coaches Arkansas.
Yes.
Right?
He'll have to go away for a little bit.
And then he'll probably have to do what Rick has done, which is convince us he loves us more than he loves Arkansas.
Because it's become very clear that Rick wants to convince him.
convince us we i love you more than i love louisville that that's clear that he wants to do
yes and and if cal does i think cal's going to need to do that and when he does i think he'll be
welcome back too unless something happens during these few years but i don't suspect that will be
the case now if we had hired bruce pearl that's a different situation but mark pop and he are not
going to fight or argue.
No, I mean, they've both been very gracious since it happened.
Yes.
And I think that will continue.
Back to the cow thing and people flipping, I think a lot of people, and I thought in
the moment, they wanted to keep cow, we're just afraid of the unknown.
That's just human nature not knowing what's next.
And now that we've seen that Sunday of what Pope's done ever since, it's kind of like,
okay, maybe the sky's not falling if John Caliperi's not the coach.
Yeah.
Who's up next in?
Luke.
Luke, how are you, Luke?
Good, good.
first off, I just want to say, I think the KSR curse is still very much alive and well
then a few weeks ago before one of my social psychology exams, and I did not do too
hot on that.
Well, I'm sorry.
How's that our fault?
That's Matt's fault, too.
I do have a question, though, for, like, younger fans like myself, like, we grew up,
like I grew up not liking Patino.
I mean, I appreciate what he did at Kentucky.
When you say young, how old are you?
How old are you?
I'm 20.
Because you're 20, but you don't remember him coaching here at all.
So, like, I understand.
You wouldn't have liked him because you only know him as the Louisville guy.
Yes, and I've heard great stories about, like, Petino and, like, the teams he's had,
and I've watched, I mean, stuff, I mean, just, you know, being a fan.
But, like, you know, kind of like what that, I can't remember her name,
but I was at the press conference that Sunday Mark Pope was in.
introduce as a girl that asked like how for younger fans how can we learn who mark pope is no that's a good
question all right so that's a very fair question i appreciate the call he asked how can we learn
who mark pope is i actually meant to do something that has slipped to my mind until this very
moment which was ryan i was thinking about running all day here on friday at the bar on loop the
96 championship game before Big Blue Madness.
That's a good idea.
And I honestly completely forgot about that until this very minute.
If anyone has that game online in a way that it would be able to stream, because we can't,
we can't put a DVD in, we have to stream it from somewhere.
If someone has that in a good quality, write me and let me know, because we might still do
that.
But that was an example of, I thought the 96 team has a connection, Ryan, for people like us, that if you didn't live through it, I can see.
You might look at it.
Like, there's a generation older than mine that you all feel a connection to the 78 title with Givens and those guys in a way that even though that was here I was born, I've never felt that because I didn't live through it.
These younger fans, we have to remember, have that about 96.
I watch it often.
It's right there.
Is it the complete game?
Oh, is it just on YouTube?
It's on YouTube.
All right.
Well, I'll see.
I'll work with our technical, technical gurus here and see if we can figure out how to get that done.
That means hubby, can we do it?
But what do you think about that?
That 96 team, you got to remember, you know, it had been 18 years that they'd won a title.
They got put on probation.
They went through, you know, some tough times.
And Patino, when he came in, brought them back to we were relevant again and good.
And that 96 team, I think we all agree, the best team that has ever played here.
And Mark Pope was the captain of that team.
He was the spiritual leader of that group.
You also, it's hard to put yourself in the place of, okay, so I would say to a 20-year-old,
think about how you watched the Warriors a few years ago,
how for a couple years it looked like the Warriors were playing a different sport than everyone else was playing.
And now the rest of the NBA has caught up.
But for those first couple years, where they were doing something completely different
than everybody else and they were really fun to watch.
Think about what that's like.
Well, in some ways for us, the Petino years were like that in college basketball.
He kind of changed the game a little bit.
Along with Arkansas, you know, ironically, UNLV, like all of a sudden there was this
fast pace, go up and down, shoot threes, press, and he was, and we were doing it.
And in the same way that Cal changed the idea of one and done and made it a thing and we were
the ones doing it. Ryan, that style that Patino played was kind of like that for us. It was,
and it made us all so proud, and we were cool again. And like I said, we went through the probation,
and we went through the Christian Leitner game, but yet we still got better and closer every
single year. And then for them to finally break through in 96, you know, the town just went crazy.
We see all those famous pictures because it meant so much to the community and the state.
It promises Shannon to be a month of tricks and treats and touchdown.
Oh, right.
Not Tuddies, though.
I'm retired.
That's been a while.
All right.
So, and Draft King's official sports betting partner in the NFL, the number one place to bet touchdowns.
Are you new to Draft Kings?
Bet five, get $200 in bonus bets.
I told you just a couple of a week or so ago.
God tell me, put his five in, got 200 bonus bets, use the bonus bets to win like $800 on touchdown.
Wow.
That's how you do it.

Last night, a blown call changed a game.
This morning, the internet lost its mind.

That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

Welcome back.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-28027.
One person writes, Matt, our offense is kind of gimmicky.
Are you worried our players won't be talented enough to get us over the hump, so we'll be living and dying by the three?
I mean, there's going to be a little bit of that,
but I don't think we're not talented enough.
I mean, I still think we probably have more talent than all but the top 15 to 20 teams in the country.
But to win a national championship, I do think we're probably one player short.
If you were just trying to find to me, like, we're probably a player short.
But like, to get to the elite eight to contend and maybe make a final four,
I think there's good enough players there.
I'm concerned about how does the game end who has the ball?
Like, how do we score in that context?
And I think our defense is going to be better than I thought it was.
I thought our defense might, I thought we might give up a million points.
But they got some dudes, Drew, who can guard.
Well, Mario Williams was a three-time defensive player of the year in his conference.
And Lamont Bueller was three-time all defense, and I think one player of the year once in his conference.
So those two alone, I have no sweat on defense.
as long as just as the cohesive unit can defend and the other guys can,
you have two elite defenders.
Yeah, I agree with that.
So I think that is a positive.
I do want to mention before I go back to phones,
you know, you guys know us,
you hear us talk about us and the six people that we mention all the time.
But there are other people that help make this show get on the air.
And there's a woman named Joy who has worked since the first,
she's been here much longer than me,
has worked at I heart since my first day.
She's the one that makes sure the commercials are in every day.
She does the work that is often thankless but is required for this to happen
and has been wonderful for this show.
And she's a Louisville fan and she was nice to me anyway,
even though she would always give me a hard time.
She was laid off yesterday by the company.
And I just want to acknowledge her because for 14 years,
she's been a huge part of putting this show on, and I love you, Joy, and just on a personal level.
I mean, she'd be the person who would look at me, you need somebody in life, it'll look at you and go,
you don't look good, what's wrong?
You need get sleep, and sometimes you need somebody to say that to you, and I'm going to miss her,
so I just wanted to acknowledge her.
Who's up next?
Doug.
Doug, go ahead, Doug.
Well, Matthew pretty much answered my question already, but I wanted a dose of reality.
I listened to the interviews after the pro day
and talking about three or four players on this team
that could be defensive player of the year in the SEC
and then we say we got maybe the best shooting team in the country
why shouldn't my expectations be sky high for this team?
I don't think they can't be sky high.
I just think it's going to be so different
than anything we've seen.
So let me put it like this.
I think in two or three years, Stoops or Stoops,
Pope is going to have a roster that has some of these high talent guys
where you go, this could be a top ten pick.
But this team doesn't have that.
So I would say to you, like, think about if you were a fan of a Purdue team
that was ranked in the top 12.
You didn't have a Zach Eadie.
And you thought you could win the Big Ten,
and you thought you were really good.
That's kind of what I think.
Kentucky team is.
There's not the guy that you go, this dude could take us to a national championship,
but you can say there's no reason this team can't be a top 15 team.
So for Doug, that does make me excited.
It's just such a different team than we've ever had, and I just want people to understand
that because it's, we have not watched a team play like this probably since like
occasional tubby years.
You know what I mean?
like a tubby team in 2004 or something like that.
Like that's kind of how I look at this.
Well, Matthew got that many people on that team that are outstanding shooters.
Why do you need a Jackie?
Because I still think there are moments you need a guy to go get you a bucket.
That's something Cal used to say, and I think he's right.
I still think there's a moment with 10 or 12 seconds left in the shot clock,
and it's a one-point game, and somebody's just got to go score.
And I just want to make sure we have that.
I think Jackson Robinson might be that.
But, you know, when I watch the pro day, I appreciate the call.
Strengths, they spread the ball, they pass, offense is going to be fun.
Weaknesses.
They did drills where they tried to take each other one-on-one, and Drew, they really struggle at it.
I mean, you can see, they really struggle just taking their man off the dribble and score.
If this team was playing Cal's offense, they might win 10 games.
I'm just saying, but they're playing an offense where their strengths are going to be.
utilize. Yeah, the thing that gives me optimism, one, it's going to be a lot of fun,
especially in the games where they're shooting lights out, they are going to absolutely
destroy some teams. I agree with that. But also, we had the talent for the last several years.
I'm kind of ready to try a new strategy. When Yukon, before this little dynasty started,
I think they were picked like fourth in their conference that year before they won the title.
They weren't loaded with NBA talent. That's kind of the way the game's gone recently.
When you look at the Final Four lately, it's not these. It's not been super-town.
So we don't know if it'll work, but I'm ready to try it.
Let me give you example.
BYU last year.
I think this is a more talented version of BYU last year, which would make sense because he coached BYU.
Think about what BYU would do.
They went on the road and beat a Kansas team that was one of the best teams in the country.
Ryan, they beat them by 20 in their gym.
And at one point, we're embarrassing them.
A week and a half later, they lost at home to Central Florida.
I mean, I don't think we're going to have that big a swing, but there will be swings.
I think we're all saying things that are going to actually happen.
We have to remember that this team was recruited to fit a system, you know.
And that's why I think Pope is so excited.
He recruited guys to fit what he wants to do.
And I think they're going to be very, very efficient.
I think the basketball IQ is going to be very, very smart, good passing team, good shooting team.
So you're right.
There are nights that they're going to look like they're one of the best teams in the country.
Yeah.
Who's next?
Tristan. Go ahead, Tristan.
Good morning, gentlemen.
Good morning.
So I am adamantly opposed to this embrace of Rick Petino for two reasons.
One is to echo the caller earlier.
I'm 33.
I was six and a half years old whenever Rick left, and so I have zero positive memories
to that guy.
He has been a villain my entire life.
So there's that reason.
The other one is that forgiveness requires contrition.
As far as I know, the man has never come out and said,
hey, I've been a bonehead, I've done some dumb things.
I'm sorry.
He just walks in and expects applause, which everyone is giving to him.
I mean, I don't think that is a terrible point, Tristan.
I appreciate the call.
I do think, though, you know, there are some people out there that show love or show attrition in a different way.
They just can't say it.
You know, you've probably known somebody in your life who couldn't say, I love you.
They could just, like, pat you on the back, but you knew that's what they meant.
In some ways, making that video and some of that stuff may just be Rick's way of trying to do it.
But I think that's a fair take, Tristan.
We'll take a break.
It's Wings Day, Dollar Wings here at KSR.
We'll take a break.
Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and Friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an acapella band with their between-songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Last night, a blown call changed a game.
This morning, the internet lost its mind.
And nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo.
And every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines.
and we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves.
Their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment,
and the stuff nobody gets to hear.

And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show,
I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this line.
You know these kids.
This linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?

the playoffs.
We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season.
And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments.
If we didn't talk ever again, I was funny.
You just understood.
That's how personal it got.
Wow.
Then after that game seven, Marquis come in too, he's like, you know I love you, dog.
You know, it's all love.
This was just playoffs.
This was just basketball.

Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing,
and honestly, just kind of lonely.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month,
and the psychology of your 20s
is breaking down the science
behind the biggest roadblocks we face.
I was six years into my career,
the 80-hour weeks,
and just the first one in, the last one out,
and I ended up burning out.
There was a large chunk of my 20s
that I, like, was just so wanting to, like,
be out of that phase out of my skin,
and I just, like, really regret not living in the present more.
You don't need to have everything figured out right now.
You just need to understand yourself a little bit better.
