Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
A rep.
My mama want you to wave at her.

Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Now here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome back hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio.
If you're just tuning in, we did the football thing in the first hour, so you can listen on podcasts.
Let's go to the second hour, which is going to be basketball.
Big Blue Madness Friday night.
I mean, let's just each give our initial takes on it.
My first one was, it was great to have the energy around Big Blue Madness back.
It felt like an event that people wanted to be a part of.
I drove by there a couple hours before, and the line was down the road.
I can't remember the last time it's been like that.
You have to go back maybe 16 or 17 for it to have been like that.
I thought the court was cool.
But honestly, you know, my favorite part is just from an entertainment standpoint.
I thought Kenny Brooks's walkout was really cool.
I like that they did that.
I thought he was very smooth.
To like for five minutes have the camera on you, I think I'd be awkward at some point, like,
wave, but he was just like, I'm the coolest man in the building, and that's just going to be how it is, right?
I love that.
I like the interest is coming through the crowd.
Yes.
Right?
I thought that was a really symbolic and awesome gesture.
You know, the production value on television was left a lot to be desired.
Didn't even know who was winning the three-point contest.
But put all that aside, in the arena, the energy seemed great.
But it all sort of ends with Rick Petino, right?
Like, I mean, ultimately, Rick Petino stole the show, right, one way or the other.
And whether you think that's good or bad, probably depends on whether or not you think it was good or bad that they brought him back.
But it was one of those, wow, you almost had to be there moments.
Because I don't think people knew for sure he was coming and then he shows up and then he speaks.
and like it just becomes, I mean, he was number three in America on Twitter.
Like it was a massive thing in the Kentucky Blue Gear.
I think it's one of those nights like in a few years when we're getting ready for Big Blue Madness
and we'll say what are the biggest things that happen.
We'll talk about the John Wall dance and we'll mention all that.
You're going to now also say Patino coming out.
Yeah, the madness had gotten kind of stale the last several years,
but that Madness Friday Night is one of the best I've ever seen a bit of part of.
And it was all because of Rick Petino.
He made it special.
And when he started talking and you can tell he got tears in his eyes,
I immediately went back to that feeling we had in the 90s.
When he came here and he changed Kentucky basketball.
And for those that weren't around,
you don't understand maybe what it was like when he took over.
And he became this larger-than-life figure.
And for him to come on and be humble and be appreciative and be gracious,
I thought was awesome.
But also for him to get the reaction he did, because that wasn't assured.
No. You know, I mean, it wasn't assured that that's what would happen. And it was almost like a great healing.
And did anybody, were there some booing there at all?
There was a little, but they were drowned out. I mean, a couple around me. I barely want to give them credit because it was so loud and they're being positive.
You were in the building. What do you think?
I was someone that didn't want him to do it just for the spotlight reason. It's like, I've said it many times last week. It's like Pope just got here. Let him have his moment.
But I liked how he was a part of something bigger.
just kind of in the back of the line.
Now he did eventually speak, and he said he wasn't expecting that.
But it wasn't like they just trotted out Rick Petino and said,
here he is.
He was in a long line of generations of Kentucky players all holding trophies.
And where I was sitting, I could see him in the very back of the tunnel holding that trophy,
and I could not believe they were going to do it.
I had about a minute or two to see him kind of do the slow walk before he got to where everyone could see him.
And I figured it would be a positive reception because you kind of got to be a jerk to boo in that scenario.
but I did not expect it to be the roar that it was.
You get caught up in the moment, right?
It was a huge pop.
It's a moment, and it's definitely a moment.
And then, you know, I love the walking out of players.
That gets me every time.
First time Cliff Hagan's been back in Rupp forever and forever.
Woo escorting Odie Smith out there.
That's a really, that's neat to me.
And then, you know, even like Duran Land.
Yeah.
Walking out with his 2012.
Nice to see some cow guys that are there, too, with Willie and Duran.
Marcus T. was there.
You know, that stuff's really cool.
I think it matters.
And I think the history of Kentucky basketball is why it's Kentucky basketball.
So being able to do that.
And, you know, it's crazy.
Rick is back.
Like, Rick's back.
That's crazy.
Seeing Rick Petino walk out in a blue UK pullover,
carrying the 96th trophy,
and Rooporan, go bonkers,
just makes me think what kind of world are we living in.
Rick's back.
Just think about if I had said to you not 10 years ago, not five years ago, two years ago.
Yeah.
Like, it's crazy that he's back and that like he's beloved.
Okay, so quick backstory.
Friday, it starts to work out like we can get him on the show.
Okay.
Talking to Perrin, who's talking to Masiello.
we're talking about how we're going to do it.
We mentioned we might do it at the bar, which would have been a scene, Shannon, if you could
have seen the technical difficulties we had.
If that had been going on and Rick was coming, forget about it.
I'm glad you didn't do that.
Forget about it.
But they had some concerns about getting him in and out of the building because, you know,
understandably, people would have wanted to have their picture.
And we, our manager was out.
We didn't really have a way to do security.
And like it was just, it was kind of decided better to do somewhere else.
So then we decided to do it at Joe Crafts Center.
Well, there's some symbolism there.
Like, Ryan and I haven't really felt all that comfortable in Joe Crafts Center since COVID.
You know?
I mean, not a lot.
I can tell the story.
I was walking up through the parking lot.
A lady that works at the UK Athletics looked at me and said, hey, good to see you guys back around here again.
It just hasn't happened.
It just hasn't happened.
So then we set up and we set up outside because it's the only place we can get service.
and Ryan Shannon is like terrified.
Is it hiding under the table?
He's terrified.
You were insanely nervous.
Why?
Because I wanted this.
You weren't even doing the interview.
No, but I wanted it to go so well.
We always have trouble when we're in a building with signal and they didn't have a hardline
for us.
We were totally up to our cell card.
And of course, we get in the lobby, Shannon.
And we can't get connected.
Uh-oh.
So we had to pull it outside and do it outside.
side on the park on the sidewalk but even during the interview shannon he's like pacing back
and forth now that he's that part of it because i was so worried about how it was going to go so he
comes out you know there's that moment shananan where you're sitting here looking at a person that
you know i'm the one that made the jokes right like the less than 15 seconds is the one that i
tweeted out and to his credit man for moment one right yep nice gracious how you doing ma'am
Humble.
I'm not sure that I'd ever really met him until that moment.
Because I didn't meet him when he was here.
Yeah.
You can tell me, it was very appreciative.
Very, said, thank you for doing this.
Yes, he did.
He literally said, thank you for doing this.
I'm glad to get to do it.
We sat and did it.
The interview, there are clips all over the internet.
You can list, download it on podcasts.
I think later today, Mario,
put the whole thing up on video and you can watch it.
I thought it went great.
I thought he answered the questions.
We addressed the fact that there was some,
awkwardness in doing it.
I thought he was honest.
I thought it was really, really good.
And then even while we were doing it,
people just gathered there out on the sidewalk kind of wanting to watch that moment, right?
I think people are walking by like, wait a minute.
That's Matt Jones interviewing Rick Petino.
Stop.
So we can see what happens.
We can see what happens.
And then there you see that.
Yeah.
Even like Jared Prickett and who else walked out of there.
JP Blevitt, like these people walked out of the practice and we're like, what is happening?
What are they doing right there?
What is going on?
But I thought it was great.
And I think that, you know, to use Ryan's phrase, bond that bridge, so to speak, that's
exactly what happened.
And the fan base is embrace of him, Drew, I knew he'd get more applause, but I didn't know
it was going to be like this.
That's what I meant.
That was a shocking reception that he got in Rupp Arena.
And as you said, I thought it was pretty cool of him when you mentioned, you know,
people were critical.
People made jokes.
He just glossed over.
Like, yeah, I get it.
He said, I said, did it bother you?
And he says something like, yes, but I understood.
And then he moved.
Which is a good answer.
It's a great answer.
And then he seemed to move right on.
And he did.
Like I'm not here to look backwards.
I'm here to look forward.
And he just wanted to focus on.
So now, can we be a little petty for a second?
Let's talk about what the reactions would be for various groups of people.
If you're a Louisville fan, Shannon.
Yeah.
And you see all that.
You're rolling your eyes going really.
dude hasn't been back to Louisville yet.
Of course, he says he hasn't been invited.
And he probably hasn't been invited.
He clearly has bitterness
towards him. He does. Not the fans.
I want to say to the fans, because I know some of them are listening,
I don't think he's as bitterness
to the fan. He said that. I have nothing
negative to say against the fans. But he certainly
has bitterness to the university
and it
eaps out of him.
You can feel it.
And
he said we about
Kentucky and the other school down the road about Louisville.
That's what the football players say in interviews.
I mean,
preview to the Louisville game.
That's how they talk.
Now, again, I don't think he means the fans.
I really don't.
No, he said he loves the fans at Louisville.
But I think he does feel that way about the university and you could feel it.
Would you be upset, you know, Mark Ennis, who's a radio show host in Louisville,
who has been a friend of mine and who I like was unbelievable.
mad and oddly talked about me, which is odd because I kind of always thought we were friendly.
What, he was very mad. Would you be mad if you were a Louisville fan?
If he went on the rival school radio show after you won a national championship at our place,
I think I'd be a little mad. Would you be mad? I'd be pretty mad. He's like the,
sadly, the most recent positive memory of Louisville basketball, even though it's been quite a bit of time.
It's like the one thing they can hold on to, and then he's wearing a UK blue quarter sip at Big Blue Madness and going on KSR.
This isn't a tough phone.
It's just a fact.
It's clear he likes us more than he likes them.
Yeah.
That's got to be tough.
What did he say?
It might have been in a TV interview.
Like, when I left Louisville, I knew I'd be sleeping in UK Blue again or something like that.
I said, did you know you'd come back?
No, he said at Big Blue Madness.
Yeah.
He was like, I knew when I was done at Louisville, I'd go to bed at night in UK Blue.
Like, that's got to just rip your heart.
you're a Louisville fan. You're a little fan. It does, man.
It does. All right. So that's one group. What if you're a St. John's fan?
And your coach is wearing Kentucky gear during the season.
Probably a little awkward, but I think you're just happy as a St. John's fan that you have Rick Petino as your coach.
Totally agree. I don't understand why the St. John fans, like, we're not rivals.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Like, when Cal was going to go to Memphis and UMass, we didn't care, right?
And at the end of the day, we know, at the end of the day, we know you're still going back to St. John's.
So if you're a St. John's fan.
Yeah, for me.
Exactly.
It's like.
So what a Pope went to big,
BYUu,
Big Blue Madness.
Wouldn't bother me at all.
It wouldn't bother me at all.
Wouldn't bother you?
I wouldn't say bothered to be like,
that's a recruiting event for them and we're going to have the same players.
Like what are you doing?
Get back over here.
I wouldn't,
I wouldn't like to be frustrated.
But St. Johns is not going after the same players we are.
They have, yeah.
I mean,
they got a great recruiting class.
And we're both projected to be five Cs right now.
I could, I'm not saying I would,
but I could see why,
how even.
even their administration would be like, hey, over here, what are you doing?
Get back here.
You people stop falling for these fake tweets.
Oh, yes.
That's bad this weekend.
No kidding, Ryan.
I'm shocked you felt.
How do you all fall for these tweets?
The tweet where the guy goes, Big East Commissioner threatening to fire Rick Petino.
Like, how do you all fall for this stuff?
Like, what worries me about society is how many people send me stuff that within three seconds
I can tell is false.
And they're like,
what do you think about this?
That it's false.
Like how, like somebody put a tweet about a fake quote stoop set.
Tennessee fans were sharing that everywhere.
They were all sharing it.
Look, there are people out there who are doing stuff to try to fool you.
It is your job as a consumer to list to like use your mind.
If you don't know who this person is, they don't work for a media outlet you've heard of.
And they're putting up a quote, they are making it up.
and wait for a second person to put it.
Nobody ever did.
Including you.
Nobody ever posted.
So I see it.
I go to his profile.
He's verified.
He writes for barge school.
He's not.
You can buy it for $8.
Everybody's verified now.
Everyone's verified.
That's why I must screwed it up.
It costs $8 to be verified.
So it had to be true, I thought.
So he has $8 this guy.
Yeah.
So finally, when I opened it up and then I see it,
the first response I see is Jack Pilgrim saying
you know, this is so bogus.
Jack is even kidding.
I know. That's why I realized that well, this is not real
then. Except you asked me about it this morning.
I said, I wanted to be sure. I said, are you sure? Is this real or not?
He was verified. I'm really worried
about the future of the internet. I am tired.
I am too. I am doing. I'm already seeing enough of that too.
I mean, the amount of people that just put
out things that are obviously false, like
video of Trump in the floods.
suit in North Carolina and they're like, look at this man's heart.
And you're like, he's, what?
Anyway, I still got one other thing I want to type, but I want to go to the phones too.
What'd you think a Big Blue Madness?
What'd you think of Rick's return?

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.

American soccer is about to explode.
The World Cup is coming.
Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart the chip.
I'm Tad Ramos.
I'm Tom Boe.
On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines.
I'm not worried about Policic.
I'm not worried about Balagan.
I'm not worried about McKinney.
My only concern is what happens in the back.
The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers,
he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise.
if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
The World Cup is almost here.
Experience it all with us.
Listen to Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast.
What's up, fam?
It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers
why he got the ball, like,
after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah,
you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,

There are times when the mind
becomes a difficult place to live.
This is David Eagleman with the Inner Cosmos podcast.
and for Mental Health Awareness Month,
we're dedicating a series to understanding the mind when it struggles.
I'm joined by doctors, researchers, and those with lived experience.
We'll talk with singer-songwriter Jewel about anxiety.
I started living in my car, and then my car got stolen.
I was shoplifting. I was having panic attacks.
I was agoraphobic.
And making it through hardship.
To be present is a learned skill, and it's hard to be present.
We'll talk with John Nelson about clinical depression and the brain implant that saved his life.
What I learned is that procedure made me happy because I'm disease-free.
And we'll talk with leading experts like Judd Brewer about anxiety and John Hirschfield about obsessive-compulsive disorder and the science of how the brain can change.
This is a month of deeply personal and honest conversations about what happens when the brain goes off course and what we can.
can do about it. Listen to Inner Cosmos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you
get your podcasts. Is this what we sang to Rick? Well, maybe this is what Rick singing to us.
Oh, this is what Rick sang to us. Okay. Yes. I'm trying to remember the other words of this song.
She's like, though I'm going to have to let you go, but I will always love you. Isn't that what Dolly
says? Yeah. I sing this to Porter Wagner, I think. And Rick singing it to us.
Yeah. All right. Quickly before I go the phones. Draft Kings.
second out of three weeks, KSR Parley.
That's now second out of three weeks.
So if you have been betting with us, you have gotten 16 to 1 total winnings.
Let's say you bet all seven weeks.
If you bet the same amount, you still have nine times your money.
So guess what?
You should be riding with KSR.
New Mexico won easy.
Told you they were good.
Pitt was a close one, but they won.
We were all coming down to overtime.
LSU Old Miss, the big upset.
that and then LSU gets the win and KSR hits it again.
You know, when LSU went to overtime, I had a tweet typed up.
You could hedge it.
If you wanted to bet on Ole Miss, you could actually have guaranteed money here and I hit
delete.
It's like, nope, we're riding this out together.
Once it went to overtime, I felt good about it because that old miss had kind of lost.
They trail the whole game.
But yeah, big winner.
Big winner.
It paid out great this week.
So we had now.
I had 20 on it.
Yeah.
20 American dollars.
Oh, big money.
Saw a guy, somebody had, draft Kings had given a guy like a $250 bonus bet.
It didn't cost him me.
I don't know how he got it.
Didn't cost him any money.
He bet it.
Put the whole thing on the parlay?
The whole thing on the parlay.
Went over two guys.
So there you go.
All right, let's get started.
Tyler's been on for a while.
Because he was the guy who answered in the football hour and wants to stay.
So go ahead, Tyler.
An hour in 16 minutes.
I love this show.
Well, thank you.
I got two things about Rick Petino.
It's weird to see him in Kentucky Blue.
I've always seen him in Kentucky Red.
I'm 32 years old.
I didn't think I'd love him.
But I think it's going to kill me to love him.
but I think I'm going to love him.
Okay.
The second thing is,
uh,
it's,
I think Patino's a pretty punctual guy.
I mean,
it's weird to hint for him to misspeak about Mark Pope like that,
where he caught him a basketball savant.
I know what a servant is.
Nice.
I like it.
That'll be my whiskey thief call of the day.
Well done.
He waited an hour and he got a joke that made me laugh.
But I,
there you go.
Appreciate the call.
I agree with that.
All right.
Let's go to Bluegrass.
Bluegrass.
What did you think of the other night?
I'll tell you what, first time, long time.
Let's get that.
Who are?
I think what, I just, I'm loving the aura.
Like, he's making it about the people.
And you hear the accent.
I am from Eastern Kentucky, and we are pretty fond of our basketball, it's this way.
And I just love how Hope has made it about the people.
It's big, it's B.B.N's team.
It's, I just love the way he's doing this.
And to have Rick come in, I mean, come on, guys, you've got to love that.
And I'm 50, so.
Well, to your point, where in Eastern Kentucky are you from?
Floyd can.
Floyd can't.
To your point, and this is not, I don't think Mark Pope could handle the tone of this any better.
When I was at the bar Saturday, I got there a couple hours before our pregame show and was just walking around.
All anybody wanted to talk to me is how excited they were about basketball.
Yeah.
I had all these people say, you know, Matt, I haven't really felt the love the last few years cannot
wait for this year.
Now, he's got to win.
Like, if they don't win, that'll go away quickly.
But I have to tell you, Bluegrass,
I heard the same thing
you were talking about.
I heard all weekend.
It's like people want this
to work so much,
and they are so excited
that Friday night felt like a tent
revival to people.
Oh, yes. It was a good old fashion
preaching. There's no doubt about that.
That's right. I appreciate the call.
I tell you what I did not like.
I don't like Mark Stoops,
marching his happy butt out there.
I'm fine with it.
I'm fine with it.
We need these, we need the, I mean, first of all, when he came out,
we didn't know we were going to lose.
But we need these programs to work together.
Part of why he was there was a symbol of,
Cal didn't want UK football part of it ever.
And UK football didn't want basketball part of it, usually.
This was almost a symbol.
that that stuff is gone away.
Is this NIL going to be a 50-50 split in basketball?
No, that's, you know, no, it's different.
It's going to be more towards football because it has to be.
But we'll tell, I, well, because just you got to have more players.
You need 12 basketball players.
You need 85 football players.
But whatever going to be nothing other than mediocre in football, you know that.
Well, would you, if we don't, if we don't distribute to NIL, we won't even be
mediocre. We'll lose every game by 50.
Then you're making
a couch point that we are a basketball school.
No, I'm not. I mean, well, first of all
it depends on what the, well, I'm not getting into all that
argument again. I appreciate the call. I mean, I, yes, we are a basketball school, but that
doesn't mean you try to, don't try to win in both.
Bruce, what's up, Bruce?
There's a saying
in professional wrestling, we can't
hate you till we love you, we can't love you
till we hate you. Rick Petino,
him, him coming back,
it's like, you know, when he was here in the 80s,
Hulk Hogan era, you had the yellow and red running wild,
slamming giants, winning titles.
He leaves, goes to WCW, puts on the black and white,
then he comes back.
Now he's got a legend deal back in the yellow and red.
Everybody wants to go to Comic Con and see him.
That's Rick Petino summed up.
He's Hulk Hogan's character arc.
That's a lot of truth to that.
There's a lot of truth to that.
I appreciate the call.
Like to use the Hogan Rock analogy,
you know, people got sick of Hogan.
He goes to WCW. He's a bad guy.
Everybody mocks Hogan.
Everybody makes jokes.
Hogan's the bad old days of wrestling.
The modern wrestling is the rock laying at the smacketh down.
John Caliperi won and done.
And then at 2002 WrestleMania, Hogan walks in and it just flips.
And the crowd decides they love nostalgia over the rock.
And now Hogan's more popular.
I mean, the Hogan Rock, that's Cal Rick.
They've flipped.
Yeah.
Almost in the middle of a match.
One year ago, Cal had brought in this Reed Shepherd, Rob Dillingham, Antonio Reeves, Rick, ha, ha, you're at St. John's.
And a year later, Rick's in blue, Rick Amalia.
Cal's in red.
Yes.
Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
And Rick's like, I always loved you anyway.
I never wanted to be in WCW.
He's right, Shannon, am I wrong?
You're right, I like it.
What's old as new again.
What's old as new again?
That famous 2002 WrestleMania, Rock and Hogan are stared at each other,
and all of a sudden the crowd goes going from Rocky, Rocky, they start going,
Hogan, Hogan, and Rocky's looking around, what?
That's what happened with Cal.
He was in Hot Springs.
Go look at those pictures.
We got to talk about that.
I don't want to see Rick in tights, though.
Are you saying you wish he ripped his shirt off?
What if he had?
Oh, my.
What if he had and he had gotten the Louisville tattooed gone?
He put a Calvin and Hobbs peeing on.
I'm sorry, I'm very bad.
And it hurts inside.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J.
He'll make him pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
So, yeah, here comes Rick.
He takes his hand.
Oh, and the crowd's going crazy.
He and Richie Farmer flexing.
Let me tell you something, mean, Gene.
Let me tell you something, brother.
John Calapary is going to get his butt kicked in Flexi.
I'm a real Kentuckian.
What you're going to do?
What you're going to do?
Pat Kelsey
when the big blue runs wild on you.
All right, I'm done.
People who don't know wrestling are not enjoying this.
Who doesn't know Hogan?
Who doesn't know Hogan?
Well, I mean, he was at the president.
He was at the camp convention.
So, yeah, I guess a lot of people do.
All right, real quick.
You think Cal watched it?
Oh, absolutely.
Like Drew and I'm just saying, there was coincidental tweet,
like right at 630.
He tweeted about Arkansas fans camping out.
at 6.30 on madness. Well, if they camped out, then they went back home because the crowd
for his version of madness, first of all, on some level, cows, I got to be like, has got to be like,
what did I do? Right? What did I do? Rick is, and you got to understand that, Cal and Rick
hate each other. Like, they hate each other. I don't care what either. They can all say
whatever they want, they hate each other. I have friends that are very close to Rick.
There was a time I was close to Cal. They hate each other. And if they say something else,
just lying.
Okay.
They are.
They hate each other.
So the fact it has to eat at Cal that Rick is at that event.
Of course it does.
Then he is in hot springs and pine bluff Arkansas.
In half empty crowds.
I mean, those crowds are sad.
Yes.
I didn't want to listen to Arkansas fans, so I didn't tweet the pictures.
But you can find them.
It is sad.
How many people were there?
And he's got to be like, I am in pine.
Bluff. What am I doing?
And Rupp Arena is packed and going bonkers for Rick Petino.
It's, it's, it's, it is, I can't even think of an analogy that makes like, that would be like this.
It really is bizarre a world, though.
I mean, if you go about just a couple of years ago and if I laid out the scenario for you,
you'd be like, there's no way that's real life.
No.
And he has to live, I mean, true.
There's a part of me that I even kind of feel sorry for it.
Like, it's got to be just, when Rick walks out there, he's got to be like, are you serious?
And adding just to what they're going through, and Cal's long tweet he sent out, as Madness was starting, it says,
lastly, I'm holding out a couple players for precautionary reasons.
Everybody's in a boot.
The ankle guy went with him.
That of all the winner stood out to me.
I was like, oh, no.
They got four guys in a boot, Shannon.
I think we can officially give up on the ankle guy.
The ankle guy followed Reed.
He's in the NBA now.
You were the one wave in the ankle.
guy flag and I said it was ridiculous to begin with.
I believe in the ankle guy.
I think we just got to get rid of the ankle guys.
Not a thing.
Ankle guys in Houston, he had a choice to follow Cal or follow Reed Shepard.
What would you have done in that situation?
He got to go to Rick.
Who's up next?
Let's go to Mark.
Hello.
Hey, what's up?
Yes, still here.
Rick Patino.
I think if you set the basketball part of the side,
it was full worthy for him to be there because that was his student.
That's true.
That's a good point.
He's a major achievement in his life.
So for him to support that, I think it was fully in order.
Do you have kids?
Do you have kids, sir?
Because I mean, I don't.
Do you have kids?
Yes, I do.
Okay, so my mom always says, and you can see if you, that like, and I believe her,
she has more pride when I do stuff than when she did it herself in some ways.
Are you like that with your kids?
Yes, I would be that way.
And I think in some ways Rick's got to be like that a little bit, Ryan,
that like his student has now taken that job.
And that's why he wanted to be there to help Mark Pope,
the captain of the 96 championship team, his team usher in this new era.
He wanted to do that because he was, Pope is one of his own.
Yes, go ahead, sir.
Agreed.
Secondly, I don't think Rick Patino will ever, ever, ever shy away from a camera
in a microphone. Well, that's true. I mean, he's not a wilting flower or anything. He's going to be,
he's going to be heard. The interview was great, I thought, and that went well. Next item,
is Mark Pope building it up in his savings account so that when late February, early March
comes around and we lose a game that we shouldn't, that we won't withdraw all the savings?
I think so. I appreciate the call. I mean, look, for me, I'll just say for me, he gives
It's somewhat of a pass this year.
He had to build the roster from scratch.
I have always believed that when Cal left, the next year's team would be awful.
So if the team is not awful and it's competitive, that to me is a win.
I think they need to make the tournament.
I think people get worried if they don't make the tournament.
I think people get worried if they're not competitive.
I don't think that will be the case.
But I do think people are going to give Pope a leash.
Do you, Drew?
Oh, definitely.
Certainly got to make the tournament.
If you don't make a tournament, that's a different conversation.
But, you know, went Owen to in both tournaments last year.
Not a very high floor.
He's matching there.
I agree with you on throwing things together on the fly.
And I think people forget, in the middle of building that roster,
he was doing that without assistance.
He was also recruiting assistance while recruiting players.
So whatever you think of this team, and I think he did pretty well,
that was a pretty big task that he did in a month.
And there was that day.
He had six commitments and six days.
this is a pretty good product he's going to roll out
He doesn't have one player that was on the team last
12 new players
So he had to completely build a new roster from scratch
We all have a good, no, this is not probably a final four team
But I'll answer your question
I think it's a very competitive team
That's still going to win a lot of games
And get this exciting
But like Drew said, you can't go one and done in March
You can't
Well, I don't know if I agree with that
I mean, first of all
When you say he can't
if he does, people will still support him and be ready for next year.
They'll be mad.
Yeah, they'll support him.
We'll see.
I think a lot of it depends.
Are you a seven seed and you play a 10 seed?
Or are you a three and you lose to a 14.
Those are different losses.
True.
You know, so we'll see.
Let's go to Ryan.
What's up, Ryan?
Matt, you there?
Yes.
So between the wrestling talk and Ryan,
I believe in that tweet,
it's got your boop and smirk's voice really fired up.
Oh, now.
No, that's stop.
Oh, will you stop?
And that's a gorilla monsoon.
Oh, will you stop?
Go ahead.
So two things about Petino.
I loved him being there at midnight madness,
but it's February 1st.
The clock's at about a minute before tip-off,
and coaches come out.
Does Patino come out and set behind Kentucky's bench
for the Kentucky Arkansas game?
Yeah, he can't do that.
I mean, I'm sure he plays that day,
but also I do think I pretty,
appreciate the call. That's where St. John's administration was be like, no, you cannot go during
conference play to one of their games. So, no, I don't think that will happen. No, but you ask
Patino himself for an interview about setting up a series with St. John's. I mean, that's coming.
First of all, the idea that we play St. John's and it's at Rupp and the other game is at Arthur
Ash Stadium at the U.S. Open. That would be awesome. I mean, Drew and I've been there. Like,
what a perfect setting. I know you have to, it has a roof now so you couldn't have to worry about
the elements. And Patino said to you, I can get that done. He looked and he goes, I can get that done.
Well, the worry is UK can't play another road game with the commitments, but like, true, that would
be awesome. Amazing. I'm just taking that seven terrain out there every day to. Yeah, we'll go to Queens,
then go to flushing. Yeah. Petino plays in Madison Square Garden today.
of UK Arkansas.
It is at noon.
I mean, he could maybe put up.
He's not coming here.
He's pretty busy that day.
Even I would be like, Rick, I don't think that's a good idea.
He plays Providence that day.
I don't think that's a good idea.
Dan, go ahead, Dan.
Hey, man, I want to give you a little bit different perspective on Petino's return.
I first want to say, I did not see Big Blue Madness, but I did listen to your
interview with Coach Patino.
And I thought it was very professional, probably more, more, more,
courteous and polite than he really
sort of deserved, but I thought
he did a great job.
Thank you. I think,
I think, I think, Pettino's
primary purpose may be a
little bit different in his
return, and I think it's because he wants to
stick it to Louisville.
He's made it clear that he
expects Louisville to, even though
he says they have the right to fire him, he's
made it clear that he wants an apology
in the manner in which they have
fired him, which is totally ridiculous.
He, he deserves
no apology for them, and they've made it clear they're not going to give him one.
So I think this is the perfect opportunity for him to say, I don't need your love, Louisville.
I got plenty of love right here.
I think there's a lot of truth to that.
I do.
I think there's a lot of truth to that, and there's a little bit of sticking it to Cal,
and there's a little bit of that.
And I think he also loves a place.
You know, all those things can be true.
You know what I mean?
Like all those things can be true.
I think he definitely loves Kentucky, but this was a perfect opportunity for him to say,
I don't need you, UVL.
I don't need you.
And they've made it clear they're not going to apologize.
So anyway, I just want to be a little bit different.
I think that's a fair perspective.
And I'm sure I appreciate the call that that is a part of it.
He gets to, I mean, that's why it's a perfect night, Shannon, for Rick.
He got to do all that.
Oh, yeah.
He got to make Louisville fans mad, or not fans.
I don't think he wants to make the fans.
But he got to make Louisville as an institution mad.
He got to make Cal mad.
And he got to return where he's wanted to be for 30 years.
He said this is one of my, like,
he says one of the greatest days.
his life. Happiest nights that he's had in a long time.
I mean, those are pretty big words.
Hey, it's promises to be a month of tricks, treats, and touchdowns.

It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted.
this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like
Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives
on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man,
hell get to fly. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like,
after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the car.

What is this?
Is this?
Peaches and Herb.
Peaches and Herb.
I think I told you this once.
When I clerked on the D.C. circuit, Herb was the security guard.
What?
Yeah.
Really?
So when it clerked on the D.C.
The security guard.
I didn't know who peaches and Herb were.
And one day somebody was like, you know that's herb from peaches and herb.
And I was like, because I liked him.
He was very, like, funny.
And he'd every day like say something.
Because I only had two suits.
And he'd be like, number two today, huh?
Because he knew that.
And, but yeah, he was herb from peaches and herb.
Oh, this was a big slow dance song back in my high school days.
Yeah.
859-28027.
Text machine, 772-7474-5254.
What person writes, Matt?
So bottom line, do we make the tournament?
Well, so a lot of preseason polls have come out.
Kim Palm has his 42nd.
CBS has his 25th.
Andy Katz has his 14th.
And that kind of is sort of symbolic to me about, like, it could be anywhere.
ESPN's 23.
23.
AP poll comes out today at noon.
Does it?
I mean, I think we'll probably be right at the bottom of the top 25.
but like I could see anywhere.
So I told you I went and looked at the top teams
and the top seven or eight are pretty good.
And then I think it takes a drop.
So I think you could put us anywhere starting about number nine to about 40.
And I don't know where we'll be in that.
There's like four or five really good teams in the SEC alone this year.
Alabama is really good.
Kansas is really good.
Gonzaga is good.
Duke.
Who am I missing?
Rutgers.
Rutgers has two of the top three freshmen in the country.
Wow.
Rutgers has two projected top ten picks and I think another guy.
Houston and Yukon.
Houston, I think, is going to be,
Houston was Kim Palm preseason number one.
Danny Hurley basically said,
I don't know why you all have us in the top three about Yukon.
He was like, he basically was warning,
we ain't what we were in the last couple years.
I hope people know that.
Now he goes, I think we can be that in March,
But he was kind of warning, like, don't everybody expect us to be great.
But you're going to have them because they're back to back.
Sure, absolutely.
Gonzaga, I have a lot of people back.
Yeah.
We said this the other day, but the SEC has so many players back that we're going to recognize.
Yeah, the SEC has a ton of teams that, like, the SEC top to bottom is going to be really, really good.
Let's go to Lucas.
Lucas.
Yo.
Go.
First time, long time, man.
Who are?
What's up?
Thank you.
Yeah.
So I just want to touch on a couple of.
couple things. We've been going to madness. Well, I haven't gone in a few years, but we used to camp
out, do the whole shebang all the way back to Patino's last couple years at UK. And I, along with
probably many other people were heartbroken when he left and then he ended up at Louisville and stuff.
But I truly believe that if he could have gone to UK instead of Louisville coming back out
of Boston, he would have, but that wasn't an option. Oh, for sure. Yeah, I think that's true.
Yeah, I mean, he wanted to be in the heartland.
He missed the bluegrass state.
And he got as close as he possibly could.
And, you know, I think, you know, we welcome him back with open arms.
He made a mistake and that's forgiven.
He did what he had to do.
And I got goosebumps, basically.
Did you?
Did you?
So you said you hadn't been to madness in the last few years, but you were determined,
you're like, okay, I definitely want to be there this time, right?
Yes.
And did you feel like it was worth it?
Oh, absolutely, man.
I mean, it was, I'm trying to think what to compare it to, really.
I mean, maybe the national championship year 2012, I mean, it was a bigger event than anyone really anticipated.
I think that's right.
I actually do think that's right.
I think it ended up a much bigger event than people thought.
Yeah.
I appreciate the call.
Drew, you stood outside the gym when it was over and did your KSR rapid reaction.
What was it like when the fans were walking out?
Oh, that was so fun.
We normally those take like 10, 15 minutes.
We did 30-something because there are so many fans out there just wanting to talk,
not just with us.
They're just out there congregating, having so much fun.
We talked to some younger fans who have no Rick Petino memories at all.
Only know him as the Louisville coach.
But they were like, because everyone else was cheering,
we're standing up cheering too because it just felt like the thing to do.
So even the generation doesn't have the nostalgia is welcoming Rick back.
I can tell the vibes were good because the bar was full afterwards.
I think people just didn't want the night to.
end you know what I mean they wanted to be in the UK and you know a couple things like during the
big movement that's made even special the two Kentucky kids end up into three point finals you know that was
something yeah and Colin Chandler had a Pope jersey on to win the slam dunk contest you know just a little
thing we need to accept they are and I say those would love we're we're corny we're a dorky team
I mean we had a macarena yeah Beyonce was more to be a little funny that's courage personality
I don't know if we need to keep doing dunk contests anymore if we don't have the participants
It's just different.
I do have to ask you.
Yeah.
Because you go on record with these.
Pro or con the Lamont Butler rap.
The idea of it was cool.
I don't know that he was actually live rapping.
He was definitely lip-sinking.
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah, because nobody else really addressed that.
I thought, okay, he's got to be lip-sinking because it's not the words aren't

But you hate when these guys do songs.
Like, that's been a thing of yours forever, even going all the way back to teach me about Kentucky.
Yeah.
I mean, it was much.
better than teach me about Kentucky.
So you did.
Also, you put it ahead and teach me about Kentucky.
Oh, yeah.
100% better.
It's pretty good.
He had some good lines.
The lines are very good.
The lines are good.
If you actually read what he says,
I mean, I gave one on the pregame show.
People didn't seem as impressed as me.
Shannon, he said something like, he said something like,
when we go to the bar, the girls be like,
hi, hi, Kerr, like he walk it up a mountain.
What about?
Why is that not good?
Hiker. Hiker. I get it. Hiker.
I get it. Is that not a good line, Mario? See, don't listen to them.
We young people, we know what it is. I wrote down my three favorites.
How about might pull up to Harlan if Trent Noah guy.
Again, good punsy. Rap and punny.
Hiker, Noah guy. Give me another one. I didn't mean to interrupt like Kentucky fans.
See, he's both rapping and punny.
I want to put banners up there while I'm away like Otega's name.
Otega Owee?
You know, he did everything for every player.
These are great, right?
Look, the song, again, I said it was better than Terrence Jones.
But by the way, we are courty because even the rap as dad jokes.
He rapped about paying taxes and they say they robin's son on some Jackson things.
They're robin.
Yeah.
Look at that.
The kids call them bars.
Those are good bars.
Those are bars.
The only other one I've heard like this is when Shigari made one of all the players.
Don't talk about Shigari.
That's not the same.
But his one line was,
I remember, nobody works harder or smarter than Jared Carter.
This is better than nobody works harder or smarter than Jared.
Whole team full of shooters like the rifle team.
I like that one, too.
Shout out the other sports.
So good.
Court physical therapy.
These jokes are so good.
I have to go get therapy.
Court.
K-O-R-T.com.
If you are in pain, who knows, maybe when this is over with the wrist.
Maybe I'll have to do a little court physical there.
You may need some on that wrist.

You know, all insurance taken, don't need a doctor's referral.
It's court.
