My guy Goose back there says Friday night. You remember Black Hawk? Yes. You remember Black Hawk? Yeah, the band. The band. Yes, they're playing at Chenaulte Vineyards Friday night. Chanelte Vineyards, where?

That's, where is that? Richmond, Kentucky. Richmond, yes. And his, the Goodwin brothers are opening for him. So you got to play, we got to play some Black Hawk here in the second hour. We can do that, yeah. Yes, and I'm going to give some tickets away. By the way, later in the show,

I'm going to give these tickets away, but I'm also going to give tickets away for the women's game tonight. I have some, about six tickets that have been given to me that we'll do. But before we get to all that, we are now joined by UKU football coach, Walt Wells, who has a big game coming this weekend. Walt, how are you? I'm doing great. Thanks for having me on. I always appreciate this about you. You make the trip to here.

You don't, that's the kind of coach I like to see. Well, I appreciate y'all having a song because you don't have to. and for us to get the space and to go all over the state, it just represents EKU and EKU football so much. So I always try to do this when UK has an off week because you like to get the UK fans to make the trip. And who do you all play this week? We play Central Arkansas, number of 16 team in the nation.

You know, we had a great battle with them last year and lost on a walk-off Hell Mary. So it ought to be a really, you know, of course we're not very happy about that. Well, tell me about those walk-off Hellmerries. My Bears team lost on one of those. A couple weeks ago. How do you defend those? What do you tell your players?

Well, that's where we had a mistake. One of our players didn't box out. And so when it got tipped and tipped down, it just fell into the guy. And he's in the end zone, and it's a touchdown. And there's really nothing you can do. So for Hail Marys, do you have every receiver? Basically, everybody's got a man. Everybody's got a man.

You've got three in the end zone to bat the ball down, not bat it up. Because if it bats up, it gets tipped around. And then as you can, you know how that goes. And so you bat it down as hard as you. you can and try to put it on the ground. And when we did that, the guy was on the ground, but he was unboxed out. And nobody there on him, and it just went right in his hands. That has to be the most frustrating.

Well, what really happened is the first play of the drive, they didn't start the clock. Oh, did you see you gave him a little Mark Stub's red face? So I was standing there with the guy, like, you cannot play the next play. And they were like, okay, I got you, coach, I got the ref. I got you, I got you. And the play started and he didn't say a word and could have been reviewable. Should have been reviewable. But, you know, we were in Arkansas and didn't work out that away.

Things that you got to be careful. We know that right. You've got to be very careful in Arkansas. It's not a great state right now. Don't be driving around on your own in Arkansas. That's right. So tell me about your season. I think what, five and four.

Is that right? Five and four just had a great win last week. Went down to Texas and played Tarleton State. Billy Gillespie. Billy Gillespie. A matter of fact, he gave one of our guys a tour of the, basketball arena and they were number seven in the country and we were fortunate enough to come out and shut them out in the second half and come out with a I think it was a 14 to 7 victory or 14 I forget

what so you got a team that's probably a little better than that record would suggest right well you know our first two games were Mississippi State and western Kentucky which it's a different level and then and then we went on the road to Utah and to Texas again which Abilene Christian's ranked and we lost those two early and then we got healthy and we're playing a little better football right now uh you we we talk a lot on this show about nil and how it affects kentucky what's it like on the eastern level like how do you do you do you all have to navigate that as much oh yeah we have to uh you know last year our quarterback was offered six figure upward six figures uh to go to a big 10 school and fight for the job and potentially be a backup or a starter and we had to fight to keep him

and not that he wanted to break the bank at eastern at all he wanted to stay but you know when you're turning down that amount of money that's right I mean you can't blame him and if you produce and that's what's going to happen you know our we couldn't keep our receiver from two years ago because Iowa State took him and he's probably going to be a second round pick now and so he came let's got to make you proud well we're evaluating right people yeah and you know because his only offer was us. He comes to us. He plays for two years, freshman and sophomore.

He gets 1,000 yards, almost 1,000 yards receiving 10 to 12 touchdowns. And the next thing you know, he's gone. And, you know, you can sit there and complain about it and do this. And, you know, in the old Roy kid days who I worked for, you know, those guys would have stuck around because they couldn't transfer. And that's how they had all them NFL guys. Now for us, you know, it's like, all right, we're going to get them ready to go and they're going to leave. Do you have to look a division or a level below you to get replacements?

Do you all do that? Do you have people on your staff that look for that? We've got people that, you know, our coaches do it, but yes, we do it. And what happens is, you know, you got to look at division two levels. You got to look at the current level you're on and you've got to look at the ones above. You know, most guys that are transferring from above are transferring for one reason. They didn't play. They didn't play.

So you've got to figure out, are they good enough to play? They got the body. How do you decide that? Well, you get practice film. That's a good thing about the, you know, they, I probably shouldn't say it like this, but they want to get rid of them. So they're going to send you practice tape. They're going to send you their practice tape and you've got evaluated all practice tape, scrimmages, whatever. And the same thing for us, when there's a kid that goes into portal, you know, I'm like, hey, make your tape, do all whatever you got to do, we'll help you, you know, because we get that scholarship back.

And it, you know, right now. Are those tough conversations to have? They were, you know, when you did it and there wasn't really a transfer portal, but now there's not because, you know, it's like I tell them at the beginning of year, guys, here's how it goes, okay? If you're really good,

you're probably going to come in and tell me you're leaving, and I'm supposed to understand. Well, if you're really bad, I'm coming to you. I'm coming to you, and you've got to understand. That makes sense. I mean, it does. I would think that,

I used to say about schools in the Mac, but I think this would be equally as true for you all. In some ways, we hear all the major conference coaches complain. In some ways, I think it's even harder there because you got it going both ways. You've got to recruit from under, might lose from over, and then be competitive in your thing. It's got to be tough, isn't it? Well, it's hard to build a culture because people are coming and going. Now, we've been fortunate.

Most of the guys that have left us have gone on and done good things, and then the other ones that have left us who thought they were going to on and we knew they you know we knew where they were and so it's slowing down at our level because they're jumping in that portal thinking they're going to go up and they don't always and they go down okay and so we give full scholarships you know it's like you got I mean our my scholarships not the same as as marks but it's very you know it covers every room board tuition and books cost of attendance and you know that's what they get now they got some other things they get to do too you know that makes it better but it's a pretty good deal. So then when

you jump in that portal and the D2 comes after you, it's half scholarship baby. And they're taking your Pell Grant and putting it towards that if you have a Pell. So they're figuring that out like oh, hang on a second, you know. So-and-so went in. He was pretty decent

here. He played a little bit. And he's at, you know, I don't want to say any schools, but he's at another school where they don't, you know, they don't give you what we give you. You know, we give you food. You know, we travel pretty good. We do all these things, you know, and they go there and they're like, yeah, so they're starting to tell our guys, hey, man, don't make that decision.

Yeah. Don't make this. And then the ones that, you know, do. I mean, like, how do you build your culture then? You said you talked about building the culture. Stoops has talked about on the Kentucky level. How do we make a culture with guys coming in? What's the way you do it in today's world?

Well, it's the same way that you've always done, in my opinion. You have to develop relationships with each other, both players to players and coaches to players. And we have to dig in and understand that the relationship. that the relationship may break your heart because the kid may be a heck of a player and he's going to leave. You've got to do it for the right reasons,

not just the reason to try to get him to be a good player. The reasons to get to know the kid, help him out, and then try to make sure they make the right decisions. That's why I feel like Parker McKinney decided to stay last year and turned down all that money was because he trusted us.

He felt like, you know, we got his best interest at heart. And he broke every record. he's one of the greatest players to ever play at EKU. And so, you know, he went through all that. Mike Smith, Jr. probably had the opportunity to leave again, but he'd been in his second transfer. Mike Smith's safety on our team that's on the senior boat watch list,

and, you know, has a great chance to get drafted, having a great year. He could have probably left, you know, but he chose to stay because he knows, you know, we've had every scout come in at least three times, you know, team, I mean, come in, and they've come three different times and sent personnel people to look at him, and he knows that I'm going to sell him as opposed to somebody else. Tell me about your team, Kentucky fans. What time is the game Saturday?

The game is 2 o'clock. We got $7 tickets. $7 tickets. I've been a couple times over the years during the by week. You guys, you always try to get Kentucky fans. We're not going to be playing. Hey, we haven't been playing well. So 2 o'clock against Central Arkansas.

What will they see from your team? Well, let's see two teams going at it that I think is going to be another 15 round fight, and that's what we talk about. I mean, it's two good football teams that, you know, have a – in our conference, have developed a robbery. We played five times since I've been there, and we're three and two on them. You know, like I said, they won last year on a go-ahead, Hell Mary walkoff game winner. So they've got Shendrick Powell, who's a great running back.

They've got David Walker who's going to, you know, be the senior bow invitee and all this. We've got Mike Smith Jr. who may be a senior bow inviting. Peyton Collins, who's a great offensive tackle. And then Josh Carter, whose brother Michael Carter plays for the Cardinals, is really, really a good running back for us, and we'll probably end up, you know, playing somewhere. So they're going to see NFL-type talent, great football game, should be a close game. I would assume it'd go down to the wire.

You know, that's what we're preparing for. And in two teams that like to hit and get after each other's butt. Sounds exciting. And you brought me some E.K.U. Roy Kid Makers mark here. Right. How about that? I got you. That's what we had for our suits for seniors.

Our big party we do in spring to help our seniors with a job fair and they all get a customer. So what is that? What is that? What is that? You help your seniors find a job. Well, we have a job fair in the morning. And so there are probably 30 to 40 different corporations there. And it's a reverse job fair.

So they walk up to them and they have their either resumes or their iPads with, you know, and you know how nowadays these kids are creative and they got all this stuff. to tell them what they've done and who they are. And so we do that in the morning. Then at night, you know, of course the team doesn't come, but we have all our boosters donors, former players are coming back because it's the night before the spring game. We have a big cigar, bourbon and cigar party and auction

and to raise money to give them custom fit suits from cuff to collar there in Richmond. And they come over and custom fit them. Oh, that's cool. Two shirts, a tie, a suit, and a pair of, I just don't do shoes because, you know, everybody's different. I wear boots. They wear Jordan, you know. Speaking of shoes, I notice he's got on the book ones.

It's like back in the days when, what were those bars there? What were they called? Oh, man, brass monkey. Richmond Knights, you had to lace them up. Yeah, what were they, where were they called? We've talked about this. What were something the name? The bull, the pony, the donkey. The, come on. You all know this. 772, 774, 5, 25, 5, 5. Give me some names of Richmond bars back in the day. I don't mean the ones now.

I mean when Richmond, what? Family dog. That was one of them. Yes. That sounds like a man that's been to the family dog back there. He knew family dog. That's right. Thursday night was the night to go to Richmond.

Oh, dude. Richmond was like, it was absolutely, it was crazy in Richmond back in the day. Is it still like that? Do they still get down in Richmond like they used to on Thursday night? I don't think so. Once every month or two, my group we'd look at each other and it'd be like, Richmond night. Oh, yeah. No, I mean, it's probably weird for people to think about now, but there was a time where people in Lexington would go to Richmond. Yes. Because it was so much fun on Thursday nights. Thursday nights. It was packed. Maybe on Wednesdays. We went and they had 50 cent whiskey night. Maybe it was whiskey Wednesday for 50 cents. I mean, what are we doing?

I have a great story about going on Thursday nights. I think I've told you before when I was a senior in high school. Oh, yes. But I don't know if I can tell that. When you were a senior in high school. That's one of my. That's a fade-this story, maybe. Yeah, that's a good story.

But that's one of the, that was one of the more humbling experiences of all time. But yes, the Richmond bars on Thursday night. Patty wagon, that's one. There you go. Well, I'm sure. Patty wagon. That's right. Gosh, I forgot all these.

And I don't think any of them are there anymore. No, the city cleaned it all up. The dog, O'Reilly's, Sutter's, Sutter's. Sutter's. Oh, yeah, I remember Sutter's. Taswell's. The thing about these. Oh, Sutter's because they would call it.

Yeah, something else. They would call it. They shouldn't call it that. They shouldn't call it. But that's what they would call it. Some of those places weren't the best at checking IDs back in the day. I think that's why it was very popular. Oh, a lot of fights, too.

Yeah, all the time. Huh? That's where Drew Barker got in the fight. That's right. Our whole football team got into it with the Eastern team. Yep. Didn't they? Yep.

That's right. That was Stoops early, like first or second year. Drew Barker and the kid from Cincinnati. What was his name? The wide receiver that caught the winning touchdown against Eastern. What was his name? I want to say Barry on Brown. Dorian Baker.

That was it. Dorian Baker. The thing about Richmond is they knew when the UK people were coming to town. And you had a target on your back with the EKU guys. There's a lot of fights. One story. This is not a funny or a happy story, but it is something I couldn't believe happened,

Livingston, Kentucky. Okay. That's not very far from here, right? That's what, 40 minutes maybe? That's what county is Livingston. I'm not sure. What is it? Somebody knows.

It's very quiet. Yeah, I got very quiet. I feel like somebody should know Livingston. Anyway, Livingston, the city of Livingston has not paid their water bill. And it's been turned. turned off for the entire city of living city lost their water the city has lost their water rock castle county rock castle county according to this story i read the city of livingston had their water turned off

now the current mayor of livingston says it's the past mayor didn't pay for it and now they're trying to pay for it but there's so much in debt on the water that they have they owe too much now This is what I read in the article on WLAX is how much they owe. How much do you think Livingston could owe to the water company that would lead to the water being turned off in the city? It's got to be a big amount. So what do you think? Because I just want to see what you think the amount would be. 500,000.

Okay, what do you think? I was going to go much lower. I will say 20,000. 20,000. Okay. What about you, Shannon? A hundred thousand. Okay.

Shannon's the closest. $89,000. They owe $89,000. So this is my question. And I know it's a small town, but they don't have $89,000. They got $89,000 in debt. And now the whole city,

they either have turned the water off or in some places they're saying, make sure you boil it because it's not being processed or whatever. Isn't that, don't you find that crazy? And it also feels like something where the state, like, should come in and go, all right, well, we'll pay the eight. You owe us Livingston. Like, I mean, you're going to have to pay us back, Livingston.

But it feels like I just didn't realize you could just turn the water off on an entire city. No, I mean, you know what happens to an individual, but for a whole city, you'd think maybe after the first bill they missed and the second bill, maybe they would have come to them then, hey. You think they were just like, I bet they'll let us go. You got to auto pay that. You set up that auto pay You think Livingston needs to auto pay? Absolutely.

And they didn't just get their water shut off. There had to have been several warnings. I don't know the story, but you don't just shut off the water. You don't think they knocked on the door of the city hall, and they're like, look, this is your last time. I think there was several knocks. Drew's right. You'd be late one day on a bill. You got an email.

You got something in the mail that are calling you. Not the city of Livingston still owes. So, anyway, I hope the folks in Livingston. I hope you get your water soon. we've done shows there before. Hopefully it gets back. What's next? Chris.

Chris, go ahead, Chris. Hey, Matt, wasn't it back in the day in Richmond that they promoted themselves as a place if you were 18 years old, you could come in and socialize? Yes, you weren't allowed in theory to drink, although I don't think it was in force, but you could get in. Right. And that was part of why it was kind of like when you were in college, if you weren't able to get in, everybody went there.

Exactly, exactly. Yeah, it was always crazy. T-bombs. I was about to say T-bombs. That's another one. T-bombs, yes. T-bombs was crazy. Hey, Matt, one other thing I was going to tell you on the Food Network,

there's a show called Worst Cooks in America. You might want to watch it just for the novelty to know that there's other people like yourself that, you know, are a novices in the kitchen. But it's really a fun show to watch. Yeah, because I haven't done it. Maybe I'll be good. Like, I feel like worst sort of implies that you've done it before. a savant right yeah so you'll step in there i'll step right in

it'll be able to it'll be like you could then work at the french laundry you know all right well i i appreciate you i think i'll be good at it i mean i did paprika like the other good as grandma sarah said paprika follow just follow instructions and a recipe and you can do it well i don't know a lot of uh i don't know a lot of uh you know a lot of spices but the ones i do like oregano what kind of spices you got in your house now. Well, I don't have a lot, but like, salt and pepper. But you can go and buy like a wooden shelf and it's got all of them, right? Lacey Susan, yeah, I get one that spins. And yes, we, I fact, we have some folks here who, who, who, who, reminded me of the Emanuel Baptist Church preacher mentioned me in his sermon. He did. Yes, somebody sent me in a clip. He talked about how I was talking about how it's hard to get people to come to events.

And so you have to do kind of special things. And I thought it was very nice. You should tell him, by the way, that I thank him. He invited me for Christmas, and that was very nice of him. I appreciated that. So somebody sent me the video on Sunday that I was in a sermon. I'm glad he chose that to talk about us on a, Not whoopass Wednesdays.

The KSR ornaments are very cool. So first 24 people, so get there early to get a KSR ornament. They are actually very, very cool. All right, so did you see what Rupparina is doing? What are they doing? Rupp Arena is creating an Amazon walkout store. Yeah. So you can go get your food and then just walk out.

But it'll charge you. Do you swipe your card in something before you walk in? So I've been into an Amazon walkout store and it was weird. Yeah. You walk in, you put your card in, and then it somehow knows exactly what you took out of. How? How does it work? Lasers.

But like you can just walk out and then it'll show up on your car. and I've done it two or three times, and they got it right. They got the exact same things I took. It's their little microchip and everything in that store? It's lasers and it's lasers. Wow. And Musk and China. And they all get together.

And then the next thing you know, you walk out and it knows exactly what you got. I've done it before. It feels like you're shoplifting. It does. It feels wrong. Because you look around. Yeah, you look around and you're like, is someone going to arrest me? What's happening?

But they're going to have that at Ruperina now. They hope to make the concession line shorter. They will have the Amazon walkout store. It fascinates me. I don't know how it works. You know, if you put your card in, how does it know it's laser? It's not lasers. So how do they know I pick up a Snickers and a Diet Coke and walk out?

Drew. I don't know how many times we have to say it. Lasers. Lasers. The laser shoots and it says Ryan took a Diet Coke. Yeah, remember in Vegas, your $8 Diet Coke when you lift It's the same refrigerators can figure it out. It's the same principle as the, I have no idea what I'm talking about,

but it's the same principle as the refrigerators at the hotel. It just knows if you've taken something. But the one at the hotel doesn't know who took it necessarily. Like, you know, it could be your room, but if I go in there and take it, it doesn't know that's a little bit. But that's, yeah, that these are a more advanced lasers shape. Now they know who took it as well. But you do have to insert your credit card when you walk in. Yeah.

In order for you, it to charge. I've seen these in like airports. Well, you're going to see it at Ruperina now starting Saturday. Starting Saturday. Wow. They didn't have it for the first game, but they're going to have it for the Bucknell game. It starts then. And then one more piece of news.

I want to pour one out. Ray Goon, the breakdancer from Australia. She's retiring from competitive breakdancing. Sad day. I actually do think it's sad. I read her interview. She's basically like this was the most fun thing in my life. And now everybody's acted like I'm the worst.

person just for being a bad dancer. And I just, her article said she's still going to break dance like at her house. Officially retiring. No, that's what she said. She said, I'm still going to break dance at my house and at parties. Oh. Which I want to go to those parties.

But she's not going to do it competitively anymore. I think it's sad. You know, she had this one moment and she was going to live it and enjoy it no matter what. And now people then like this can't stop making fun of her. But I don't. wanted to dance. All she wanted to do Shannon was dance. And like she said, I don't even mind the making fun. It's the people who act like I was some kind of disgrace for doing it is what she didn't love. Imagine you're such a bad dancer that they cancel the entire sport. Yeah, they literally

said the sport ends because you're so bad. Like, no one's ever done that before. I mean, that's an amazing thing to be like you. We're shutting it down. You are so awful at this that we will never let it back in the Olympics. I mean, there's nothing that's been like that. Like, someone's not so bad at golf. They're like, we're shutting down the PGA tour. We just can't have this. It's really sad.

I mean, it's a wonder she has not become a celebrity. Well, she has, like, she has been offered, like, to be on reality shows and stuff, but she's like, I'm a professor. I'm not Mr. Pectacular. So she's not. But she did an interview in Australia. She'd been, she'd been like Bartman. She had disappeared.

Really? And this was her first, like, public interview. I thought she would be celebrated and be a celebrity. Well, I saw just like two weeks ago she did a challenge where she was paying like $10,000 for anyone that could break dance better than her. So I guess she tried one last run and now it was just too much. Wow. Well, I like the idea, though, you could go to a party and she'll just dance and she'll be fine. I just, I mean, I just want everybody to take a step back and think about being that woman.

All right, you put on that hideous green suit and you decide to go out there and break dance. you're like you think you've got it you're like oh here we go i'm doing the robot and then you roll on the ground and you get off and then you get on your phone and you're like oh no like she thought people was actually going to like that when she did the sprinkler she thought anyone would ever notice i think she probably thought she would compete lose move on with her life and then all of a sudden you're everywhere and then like i saw that in europe it was the most popular Halloween costume this year. The most popular, there's the company that makes

the break dancing uniform sold out like 10 times in Australia of people buying it. You can't help me feel bad for a little bit, can you? I do. I feel bad for a little bit. Like I said, she just wanted to have her moment,

have some fun. And she thought she was going to represent her country and maybe even be a hero. And instead, like, she is the epitome of you can't dance. She's a very powerful person.
