Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor. It signals to the world that you not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Life is full of hurdles. So how do you keep going? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we're talking with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness from professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions about the challenges that shape them and the mindset that keeps them moving forward. At our level, at this scale, being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud.
Starting point is 00:02:23 But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Comedy Off Broadway and Lexington welcomes Akash Singh, November 1st and 2nd, then catch Josh Prey, November 8th and 9th. And don't miss Chris Porter, November 14th through the 16th. Comedy Up Broadway opened in downtown Lexington in 1987, and they're still bringing the best and stand-up comedy to the area 3rd. 37 years later.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Call 859-271 joke or visit Comedyoff-Broadway.com. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone. This is Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, November 14th. I am Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill on a rainy, kind of nasty Thursday, but one that should be a lot of fun. You can give Shownland Clark's puppet shop phone line.
Starting point is 00:03:31 859-2-80-2287. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine, 7-724-5-254. This edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. You call T.J. I'll Make-May. Ryan and Drew are here. Drew, you have a special shirt on. Oh, I do. Well, Ryan does, too, but a little different.
Starting point is 00:03:48 For different reasons. You have the shirt that I think a lot of people may not even know existed, which was the won-this shirt for the 2012 National Championship Team. It has caricaturedure. of the six major players on that team, and you're wearing it in honor of the fact that Duran Lamb and Marcus Teague will be in the building today. Yes, this is an original 2012 onus.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Mario asked me the other day if I've heard of onus. Come on, Mario, I'm ground floor onus fan over here. This is our era. This is my era. You all hear me talk about Duran Lamb all the time, Teague, the whole group, not just because they won a title, but there was just a lot of fun around that team. Is it fair to say, like, is Duran one of your two or three favorite
Starting point is 00:04:29 players is it what to ron well he's about to be here so make it awkward he's not as as it seems it's just that when people talk about that era so much he's not as said as often he's not others when he had 17 points in the why is that awkward like you like you could well you know he's not in my admiration I just want to make sure history does not forget him I mean Nick Richards number one what who are who are your top three if you're just talking like who's put me on the spot a little bit not who's the bass just too you like Richards you know I some of them I knew a little more than others Nick Richards.
Starting point is 00:05:01 DeMarcus? DeMarcus and Nick Richards are certainly in the top three. I thought he'd say Duran. I thought Duran was definitely a top three. If I were to guess, I would have forgotten about Nick Richards. But now that you say that, I would have picked your three as being Nick Richards, DeMarcus, and Dara. I would put it there for the occasion.
Starting point is 00:05:17 But it's more of just I don't want the world to forget what Duran Lamb did at Kentucky. Yeah. So I emphasize him any time that Erras talked about. Who's your top three, Ryan? Just again, just favorite, just as as. as players or not necessarily people because like again then it gets to who you know personally yeah i would pick ravi moss if it was just people just as players uh i think walter mcardi's definitely number one okay that covered him in high school so he would be my number one guy uh i would say
Starting point is 00:05:44 number two would probably be chuck hayes okay yeah those are good uh number three uh maybe anthony iips Cameron mills one of little guys all right i like that so that's kind of your prime that was when you were in your that we're talking about as a fan who i am as a fan i like a lot of those guys, but as a fan. So for me, I mean, DeMarcus has to be one of them. I just, I loved DeMarcus. I loved just his personality and then watching him play. Oh, you know, a lot of the rest, I would say, again, what's weird is I know DeMarcus.
Starting point is 00:06:19 These other two, two I'm going to say, I don't really know them at all. But you were a fan of them. I think I liked the Harrison Twins a lot. I just really wanted them. I felt like they were going through a lot, and I thought they were underrated, and then they just kept winning, and I don't know those guys really at all.
Starting point is 00:06:36 And then honestly, the third one, I don't really know him much at all either, but Antonio Reeves last year. I was just a huge, I just liked that he was a senior, got better, I didn't feel like he played enough early. On a personal level,
Starting point is 00:06:51 it'd be like, Woo, Ramel, Patrick Patterson. But that's, I mean, if I'm just doing strictly, player that would be it. Anzley Almanor climbing that list. Inslee Almanor, that's right. A couple more point.
Starting point is 00:07:03 He keeps hitting all these threes. I even pointed it myself on the Anzley Almanor three. I didn't even get a correction on my list. Yeah. Walter McCarty, Chuck Hayes, Kyle Macy. I forgot about Kyle Macy. Oh, yeah, because you were from Indiana. I was going to be just like him.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Yeah, every time you say that, it's a different person you were going to be just like. Sometimes it was the guy in Indiana, David Bailey. No, not David Bailey. Steve Alford. Yes, Steve Alford. Okay, yeah. Well, they're going to be here. Last night, Duran called me when I was at dinner, and I was like, hey, man, you know, you can't cuss.
Starting point is 00:07:39 You know, like, you can't cuss. And he goes, oh, man, I got that. And then he, like, cussed in that sense. And I was like, all right, so I get like, no, but I mean, you can't cuss. And he was like, all right, well, what are you going to ask me? And I said, oh, I mean, we'll promote your podcast. I just want to talk about, you know, stories when you were at Kentucky, you know, just, just fun, fun stuff. And he was like, okay.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Then he goes, what time do you get up? And I said, I don't know, like a few minutes before nine, maybe. And he was like, well, I'll call you in the morning. Now it's like, well, we're on the phone right now. Like, wait, let's, you know, but I think he's very excited to be here. He and Marcus, by the way, are driving from Indianapolis to do it. Really? Yeah, because so if you come out to KS.
Starting point is 00:08:25 you can meet him say hello but they didn't i don't think he knew to last night we were going to be at a restaurant he thought we were going to be in a studio so i was like it'll be good i'll get you on lunch after if you wanted and so well after you promoted it i got to thinking i don't think these guys have been on the radio show before have they i don't i can't think marcus ever was i feel like i feel like we had to ron after the season maybe but i but i mean i know we had anthony and Michael Gilchrist, and we had Darius that year. I kind of think we had to run. I think I remember, for whatever reason, I couldn't get Teague.
Starting point is 00:08:59 I agree with you. TIG has definitely not been on, but I don't remember even Lamb being on before. And that was right about the time when all the seniors or the guys that were leaving would come in and sit down with us every year. Yeah, that changed over a while. Yeah, after a while. Well, all right, so I don't know about you all, after a big win or after something positive happens, I'm always kind of like, I got to hear what everybody has to say. You know, this is what I used to do all the time.
Starting point is 00:09:26 I used to, after Kentucky wins, okay, let's read what's ESPN say? What does CBS say? What is all this? You know, I kind of got away from that in the last few years for a couple reasons. One, we didn't win as much. But number two, the national guys kind of all hate Calpair. And have really from the beginning. So it was like they didn't write or say nice things usually.
Starting point is 00:09:48 so it was just I just got out of the habit of doing that you know what I mean I got out of reading what other people said but yesterday I didn't have a lot to do in the after in the afternoon I after my my class thing and so I was like you know I got a I want to hear some of this so I listened to a number of college basketball podcast I listened to the barstool one the CBS one the field of 68 one and universal in praise for for uh pope it's clear these guys really like mark pope the years we've had of kentucky sort of getting what we felt like was unfair press i think that's going away because these dudes drew don't you think they really seem to like mark just as a person it might be the other way where
Starting point is 00:10:35 we might read stuff like wow they're really pumping up kentucky i think they are and listen the other thing is we are traffic for college basketball i mean i ask it ask anyone that covers college basketball, there are only two things you can write about that are guaranteed to get traffic, Kentucky and Duke. So when they play each other, massive. It's, you know, for a lot of them, it's going to be their biggest, their biggest reading day until like February. And I get an email nearly every day of a website. We wrote this blurb, any chance, KSR, all the time, direct people, daily one of those comes out. All the time. You get those all the time. Will you link this? Will you link that? So I listen to all of them. First of all,
Starting point is 00:11:16 Field of 68. I'm going to give you a little, like, podcast-y thing. Field of 68. If you're a hardcore college basketball fan, you should be listening to that. They go live every night on YouTube and social media talking about the games of the day. And if you like it or you want to listen to the next day, if you love college basketball, not just Kentucky, but all of them, definitely ought to listen to that. CBS with Matt Norlander and Gary Parrish, little bit less detail-oriented.
Starting point is 00:11:44 They focus on kind of the top programs. They did 15 or 20 minutes yesterday on Kentucky. And then the Barstool one's more goofy, but they still talk. They're all worth listening to. But on the CBS one yesterday, they actually talked Ryan about this show. Did they? And Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander basically said that they thought the win that Kentucky got over Duke was kind of like also for validation for the fans,
Starting point is 00:12:16 and they also sort of said for this show that, like, now these are outsiders. And at times I haven't even gotten along with Gary Parrish. I've always been friends with Bat Norlander. I get along with both of them now. But they both were like, Cal had alienated the fan base and the local media, and that's now gone. And they actually talked about that a little bit,
Starting point is 00:12:34 and I thought, man, how do you guys all know this when, but they were done on about everything they had said. Yeah, I think a lot of fans don't necessarily agree a lot with what Norlander or Parish has to say, but if they're outsiders looking in that know the game and know the ends and outs of the coaching guys, so for them to step back and say something like that, I think it holds a lot of value.
Starting point is 00:12:52 But then I decided to watch PTA. So I went and saw PTI. I don't watch PTI anymore. You have to understand. I mean, for people like Tony Kornheiser is my, I mean, Tony Kornheiser, David Letterman, and Larry David. Like those are the three people that I consider personality-wise. to be the most on my man.
Starting point is 00:13:13 They're all old now, which is probably not a good sign. But I see that PTI is going to talk about Kentucky Duke. Okay. So I think, Drew, I got to watch this, right? But I'm out in public, and it's on, and I can't hear the sound. So I quickly pull it up on my phone live to watch it, because I want to see what do they say about Duke, Kentucky. And I have to tell you, Drew, it made me sad.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Oh. I don't know if you've all ever had this with a television show or with like something in your life that you've loved that you just realize it's over. Like that thing's jumped the shark. Can't do it anymore. One of these days, somebody's going to say that about us. But like I was sitting there listening and Wilbon and Cornheiser were talking about how in college basketball, these guys only stay here for a cup of coffee. And then Kentucky's got all these four and five years, but they're only going to be there for a cup of coffee.
Starting point is 00:14:15 And then Tony Cornheiser, my dear Tony Cornheiser, who literally I'd still be a lawyer if I didn't like his radio show. Tony Cornheiser goes, you know who does it right? Is Michigan State. Tom Izzo, who every other pundits says should be kicked out of the Champions Classic because they stink. And Tony Gornhizer goes, that's who I like. I like Michigan State.
Starting point is 00:14:40 and Drew my heart was broken. I was like, dude, you used to be the edgy, funny, like everything. And now you're the old guy in the corner going time is old keeps these guys for four years. And they make it to the tournament. I was like, when did that happen? I see the pain in your eyes. I hated it. You don't just kind of like Tony Cornheuser.
Starting point is 00:15:02 That's been a legend. And I've never met him. Remember I was supposed to meet him and I had to fly back to Kentucky for a funeral and I didn't get to meeting. the last time I've seen this pain in your face was when you didn't meet Tony Kornhizer, and the second time is when Tony did his rain yesterday. But now I'm like, you're going to have to go away. Like, I've already stopped listening to his podcast because it's like, it's a little old guy talking about like raking his leaves and stuff.
Starting point is 00:15:25 And I go, you know, I, but then I was like PTIs over again. I've never really liked Wilbon. But it wasn't that they spent two of the three minutes talking about Duke. It was that they were old dudes talking about how coffee used. to be cheaper, Ryan. I just, I couldn't believe it. Drew and I can not just see the pain in your eyes. We hear it in your voice.
Starting point is 00:15:47 You put Tony Kornheiser on a pedestal. A lot of what we do is based on his show. I remember I cried my eyes out when Letterman's final show was. But he left at the right time. This is going to be the final season of curb. And now I've even lost Korda. Wow. Did you tear up a little hearing it?
Starting point is 00:16:05 I just was like, I just was like, what has happened to you? And how old am I? My, like, all these dudes, like, they're gone. So, you know, now, I don't know. I guess I got to go, like, younger. I guess it'll be Bargazzi. He's at least my age. Stephen A. Smith, if you need the same thing.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Stop. What somebody's screaming at you all day? But PTI, literally, PTI, which I remember when it debuted in, like, 2001 or 2000, it's over. It ended last night for me on the UK Duke segment. The moment he said, you know who does it right, with Bill Self and Duke and Kentucky, he said Michigan State and Tom Isso. I was like, Drew, that's it. I'm done with that show.
Starting point is 00:16:52 This is hard to watch. Even, Hey, Kentucky, rest in peace. You modeled that after PTI a little bit. Hey, Kentucky's entire existence was PTI but for Kentucky Sports and News. I made them build that graphic so that it looked. I talked to a PTI producer. about how they do the show. And this is how it ends.
Starting point is 00:17:13 And he has to end saying, time is it right. Do you need a moment? No, I'm good. Duran and Marcus are coming. They'll save us. They'll take us back to the better days. 859-2802287.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Text machine is 772-77525-254. We'll talk more about Mark Pope getting praise everywhere here on KSR. Last night, a blown call changed the game. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:18:48 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:19:03 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free Our Heart Radio app, search Learn the Hardway, and listen now. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering
Starting point is 00:19:35 Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant, this went to a billion dollar fraud.
Starting point is 00:19:56 But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. is somebody coming after me. Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them go. From the WMBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs, Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals.
Starting point is 00:21:10 at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:21:37 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:22:00 or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. Got some folks here from Indiana. Where are you guys from? Louisville, Lisbon. Lisbetown, Russell Springs. I know you, Louisville. So we got all over the place here today.
Starting point is 00:22:20 He's got something to sign from the 2012 national championship. I like that. That's very smart here. That's cool. That's the seat cushion from the game. We're going to have to get their signatures on the door back there too. I got the Sharpie already in my pocket. That's right.
Starting point is 00:22:32 We do need to put them on the door. That door's had a lot of things. One person writes, Matt, Alan Cutler broke the news this morning. Cutter Bowley is starting for UK. you think? I think we said that last week. I mean, we did. We said it last week. Last Thursday, Cutter Bowley started. So, you know, that's news broken a week later. I think Cutler had the Utler San Brock is starting. I'm sorry. No, wait a minute. Cutter St. Brock is starting. He just tweeted a little before the show. Just as I hear that Brock is starting at QB.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Okay. So he's actually taking a different take than whatever. Maybe the plan has changed there. And so I apologize to Alan. Maybe he knows something newer than that. The plan had been for Cutter. Maybe Brock's gotten better. That would be an interesting change if that happens. But I think either way, even if Brock does start, you're going to see a ton of Cutter Bowley on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Are you excited for that? Yeah, I want to see what he can do. You know, he's highly recruited. He has a cannon front arm, so hopefully he'll get a chance to go out there and get some reps in. I think it's going to be more than a few. Yeah. Good. I think he's going to play a lot.
Starting point is 00:23:42 I hope he does. You just want to see what you have. Yeah. I mean, they're going to have a lot of decisions to make on. Cutter's going to have a decision. UK's going to have a decision. And you want to know what you're holding. Is this a guy we trust giving keys to and want to really make sure we've retained or maybe
Starting point is 00:23:55 either party wants to go a different direction? Yeah, I want to get back to the football thing in a minute. But let's talk for a second about a couple other things from yesterday. I miss this in the moment. We talked about it early in the morning, but then I saw more details about it. You know, college basketball does not have a uniform basketball. Yeah. Everybody, like, everybody realizes that.
Starting point is 00:24:17 Yeah. There are actually three basketballs used a lot. So we play with a Nike ball. And most Nike schools play with a Nike, which means when the games at Rupp Arena, you have a Nike basketball. But when you play at Louisville or Kansas or Auburn, they have an Adidas basketball. And there are people that will tell you that the Adidas basketball is very different than the Nike basketball.
Starting point is 00:24:43 I don't really know the difference, but there will people tell you. Then in the NCAA tournament, they play with A. Wilson basketball, which is even different than the others in which almost no schools play with. So there are three major basketballs. But that's not all the basketballs. Really? Wisconsin plays with the basketball that is made in Wisconsin. it's like a local Wisconsin basketball. And it's made by a company in Wisconsin,
Starting point is 00:25:13 and the Wisconsin legislature, I guess, had a rule that everyone in Wisconsin, every Wisconsin team has to play with the Wisconsin basketball. So apparently when you would play at Wisconsin, it was like you were playing a different sport with that ball. And then the Champions Classic has its own ball. It has a Spalding basketball, which apparently is very rarely used.
Starting point is 00:25:35 used to be the number one. I think maybe Bellarmine uses it, but there aren't many. So you may remember the Adidas thing has come up before. Yes. Right? We're like, we would shoot really poorly. And I think Cal would even bring up the Adidas balls are a little different. Well, at the Champions Classic, everyone, all the teams shot terribly from 30.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Duke shot 29, but Kansas shot like, excuse me, Kansas shot 29. Duke shot like 17. Michigan State shot 12. Kentucky shot 40. And Pope said after the game that they practiced all week with the Spalding basketballs, like the entire practice before. I tweeted that out. Some people said other teams do that. Some people don't. When Cal was here, they would do the Adidas ball in pregame shoot around. but they would not practice with it. But Pope said he did it for a week.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Now, look, I'm not saying that makes you, you know, Albert Einstein to do that. But to me, those are the little things that actually drew. I love seeing the coach do. To me, the difference between success and great success is often the little things. And I feel like Mark Pope seems to be a guy that does the little things. I loved that news probably more than I should because I'm thinking back and I brought this up on this show. Our guy, Stephen, that does video for KSR, found the rapid reactions, all that. He has been screaming about these basketballs since he started working at our company.
Starting point is 00:27:14 I've gone on road trips with him and 90% of the conversation is when is Kentucky going to prepare for the basketball that's in these games. Yeah. I think it's the Wilson Evo Next or something is the bright orange one. It's very bright orange. I have walked in with an arena of him. We've been 50 yards from the court and he points at the butts, the bright orange. Orange Wilson ball. But his point is there's stats and he's done a full-length essay about this about the difference in the balls. And I think like Matt Painter, a few others have noticed in
Starting point is 00:27:40 practice and it makes a difference. And I love hearing that Pope's doing it. I mean, this, it is crazy the difference in these basketballs and there's dad out there to prove it. And it's crazy college basketball doesn't have one basketball. It is. It is kind of insane that you have to like go to a different basketball depending where you are. But you know, it's sort of like what I say about NIL, Ryan. It may be a stupid rule, but as long as it's the rule, you've got to operate within those constraints, and he does. And I just thought that was, I think that's, again, a small sign. I'm not saying Shire and self and those guys don't do it. I honestly don't know. I know that when the other regime was here, they'd only do it on game day. So hearing that they
Starting point is 00:28:22 did it for a week is something that I love. I definitely like it. We've heard guys that play at UK talk about the difference in the ball. I know people sitting here. listening and thinking that doesn't make any difference it does you pick up the Nike basketball not Rupp arena it feels different and at the NCAA ball for an example because we went out there on Pittsburgh this was just my ignorant opinion it's slicker okay it doesn't have quite the same grip because usually at the NCAA term they're all new okay oh yeah oh yeah and the other thing is it's feels at least to me I'm not tom Brady but it feels more inflated okay it feels like feels like when you dribble the ball bounces higher.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Remember, you and I went out there and dribbled that, and is that kind of how you felt? Wasn't there a game where guys kept losing the ball? Might just have too much air in it, but just guys bring it up the court. We're having trouble just dribbling. I mean, I think it's like. There are a couple of turnovers from just bouncing it to us.
Starting point is 00:29:16 It's just like a hyper ball. It's like it's not broken in and it's just, and I do think it makes sense. I think it makes sense. Like, now Nike may not like it to know that for a week in practice you're using a Spalding basketball, but who cares? We have to win the game. That's right.
Starting point is 00:29:32 Mark Pope is preparing to win the game. A little thing that may give his team a little more of an edge over the other guy. Heck yeah, I'll do it. And so you have to love that. And then not trying to be, you know, I watch the first half of the Cal Arkansas. DJ Wagner played 37 minutes, zero point. Oh, I didn't know that. Now, Z hit like 530.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Yeah, I saw the second half where Z. I mean, I think Z, basically. Z had a Georgia game again. But they scored 65 against Troy. I knew they were trailing at halftime. I'm just saying. It's a lot more fun to watch what we're watching. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:30:10 We'll take a break. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tegu Sports Radio. 11 o'clock. Marcus Teague, Duran Lamb.
Starting point is 00:30:25 I have a new podcast. they are coming in here, assuming they're on time, but coming from Indianapolis, so excited about that. I'm going to guess they didn't sleep much last night. That's what they do. Are you going to tell Duran about your thing you share with him? I can. I have a lot of angles we could go.
Starting point is 00:30:45 There was some fun at Trust back when the Thunder were in. Yeah. Well, we also, I'm going to ask them about the famous pickup game versus the Thunder. You know, that's kind of been a thing of legend for a while. was the pickup game against the Thunder. I started a bracelet company out of that game. That's right. They told some stories I'd never heard before on their podcast, too,
Starting point is 00:31:05 that we should tap into that Indiana game, especially. Yeah, the Indiana game was the big one. I saw that. So I look forward to chat with them. Who's up first, Shannon? Kevin. Kevin, go ahead, Kevin. Mr. Matt Jones, how are you, sir?
Starting point is 00:31:18 Good, what's up? Good. I wanted to call in. I love that you gave a good segue into the Arkansas game last night. I did a hate viewing session of it just to see. And it really was the quintessential Calipari game. I mean, it was a 50% full building. Brazil and Flan both go down with ankle injuries.
Starting point is 00:31:37 They're 5 and 19 from mid-to-long two. That's true. They struggle with an inferior team for 32 minutes, pull away late, make it look better than it really was. But it's just one of those gross wins that you know of the fan. That's really a good point. That was a quintessential Cal win. It had all the elements, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:31:53 It had the ankle injuries. It had the legions. It had the long twos, the poor shooting, your best player scores zero points. Like it really, that was a quintessential cow game, Kevin. Yeah, and my two favorite parts was, and I'll leave you with it, half time they show a video of Brad Calder Perry getting a demo of the NOAA shooting system that they never used here. The irony was just, I mean, delicious.
Starting point is 00:32:21 And then post-game, Cal says he doesn't even know when their next game, is or when they play he thought they were playing on Saturday that they were going to be up against the Arkansas football game it's just unbelievable yeah he did say after the game I appreciate the call cow gave one of his uh he said I don't know when we play next he also gave a statement that he he looked at the s ID and goes do they always ask as many questions and that one Arkansas reporter said well you're never here so I guess we have to when we can good for him I think Bob holt's going to have a few back and forth with cow that we're going to find entertainment yeah So they did show the Brad Caliperi NOAA system.
Starting point is 00:32:58 You know, that's the shooting system. Yeah. And Brad was describing it. And the irony of listening to them. And Brad actually did a good job. I'm not making fun of Brad on this. He did a good job. But the irony of them describing the system and how revolutionary it is
Starting point is 00:33:13 when we had two coaches who never even logged into it. One of them that's there. Very telling. I mean, literally, if you remember, they paid for it. the stay-of-the-art system and when they need to get it repaired, they found out that two of the coaches had never logged in, including one of the ones in charge of game prep. So, Ryan, I just thought that they did a segment on how revolutionary that was did kind of make me laugh.
Starting point is 00:33:39 And when you just compare what you hear from Cal and the Arkansas side and what you're hearing from Mark Pope and the Kentucky side, Mark is breaking down every single player on the opposing team. Cal doesn't even know who he's playing, hasn't watched tape, hasn't prepared for them, has it looked at their, they couldn't tell you one guy on their leading score on Troy's team. He doesn't even know it. And Mark is breaking down every single guy on the opposing team. John Clay said, Kentucky's went over Duke was the first time since March 7th, 2020,
Starting point is 00:34:07 in which UK had been down nine and won a game. Wow. Sounds about right. Yeah. That was right before COVID. Yes. First time since the UK had been a nine point deficit or more for a victory. Cats were 0.12.
Starting point is 00:34:21 What? Sorry, go ahead. March 7th. 2020. Well, that's COVID year. That was Florida right before the, before the tournament. That was pretty much their championship. They had a big win there. And literally that's, for me, that's the dividing point is the COVID year. So it's interesting. This is the first time we've done that. You know, there was a point back in the day when you would, when we would fall down behind that much and you did think it was over. I will say,
Starting point is 00:34:45 Drew, this year, with the way we can shoot threes, it can literally, for down nine, it can be a three possessions and you're right back in it. Yeah, the way they pull. If they can get hot, I said this yesterday. I thought it might happen against Duke, but they actually use defense. But you're just three trips down the floor of making a three. You're back in a game. And we know they can do that. No issue there.
Starting point is 00:35:04 I was surprised. I thought if you told me at halftime of the Duke game, they'd come back and win, I would think they'd have one of those runs. Instead, they use other ways to make it happen. Do you wish we were playing, by the way, this weekend? Or do you, like, kind of keep the momentum going? Or do you think having a week to kind of enjoy it and get? Because the next few games, I mean, we play Lipscomb next.
Starting point is 00:35:22 but we don't play another hard game, really, until the Clemson game, first week of December. Are you good with that? No, I wish they were playing Saturday, no doubt. You're just coming off this huge win. We got all this momentum, all this excitement. I wish they would back on the court probably the next day on Wednesday. Yeah, our next four games, there they are. What's going on?
Starting point is 00:35:41 We'll be appreciate you guys. The next four games are Lipscomb, Jackson State, Western Kentucky, and Georgia State. A lot of the other teams end up playing. hard games in November, but because we do that tournament here where we don't play anybody, we end up having our hard games in December, you know, and that's, there's four. Then our next four after that are Clemson, Gonzaga, we play Colgate, then Louisville and Ohio State. You know, I understand we got to play the, what we call it, the Cupcake Games. I'm glad Western Kentucky's in there.
Starting point is 00:36:16 That would be at least some entertaining game for the fans. But the way our fans have showed up for Bucknell and Kentucky West an exhibition game, they'll pack up arena for those four games. 859-28027. Who's next year? Sean. Sean, how are you, Sean? I'm wonderful, guys.
Starting point is 00:36:31 Thank you so much as a lifelong Kentucky fan, the show. KS. It's been the best 48 hours, I think I can remember, being a fan. But I'm going to throw two quick things at you really fast. When the job was open, when the job was open, I wanted a big name. And the first one I used to tell everybody was Brad Stevens. But guys, I think we have the modern day Brad Stevens. Wow.
Starting point is 00:36:56 With the way Coach Pope uses analytics, it's gathering data. He's got every coach working. Student assistance right behind him with computers. It's live data, and the adjustments are only to get better. I think we overlooked the fact that this guy is amazing when it comes to analytics. He's the Billy Bean. He's the Billy Bean of Congress. college basketball for Moneyball, in my opinion.
Starting point is 00:37:25 Yeah, I agree. The next thing I would throw out you really fast. Real quick. The next day I'll think you real. Go ahead. Okay. Dude, you talked about it. Wait just when we get dudes.
Starting point is 00:37:35 I think in 2024 NCAA basketball, guys, I think we got dudes. They're 22 years old and they're amazing. I want to hang up. And again, thank you so much. It's not, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that this group of guys aren't really good. They're very talented. and in today's college basketball having 22, you know, the 2012 team with freshmen and sophomores winning, that is what worked then.
Starting point is 00:37:59 I don't know if it works now or not, but the 22, 23-year-olds is what's worked the last few years. I'm just saying they're not NBA guys, at least it doesn't look like it yet. Maybe they become it. But in today's college basketball, Drew, that's not what wins. I mean, that's not, like, you need an NBA guy. And I think in a year or two, when Pope gets NBA guys and has that, you know, that, then you're looking at a different thing. But I still, you know, in today's college basketball teams, teams look more like that than they did 2010 to 2015.
Starting point is 00:38:30 Yeah, when Yukon won their first of two in a row, they were picked middle of their conference. I don't think anyone saw a ton of NBA talent there. Now they played their way into it because they had a special season. And last year they had a few more. But Kentucky certainly doesn't have any guys that are high on draft boards at the moment. But, you know, maybe if they have a Final Four run, they can play into it. That's just not what they came in here to be. Yeah, so when I say they don't, this group doesn't have dudes, I don't mean like they're not really good.
Starting point is 00:38:56 I'm just saying it's different. It's different than anything we've had in a long time. And so you just have to kind of, you know, get used to it. It's a change. We're not watching the mock drafts as much as we were for the last several years. But then take next year, you're going to have three or four of those dudes and combine them with a team full of these guys. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:39:16 There was one of the little podcasts I listened to said, if you tell me to my. tomorrow, Otega O'A's coming back with the recruiting class they get, I'll pick Kentucky preseason number one. Oh, we don't even know who else would be on the roster. Brandon Garrison, Otago, O.A, Colin Chandler, the Kentucky boys, and then presumably three or four more transfers, and that's what you would get. Clayton and Crude was founded on a simple idea, Ryan. All leather goods should last a lifetime.
Starting point is 00:39:43 They make everything from bags, belts, wallets, and more, and the best part they're doing it right here in Kentucky. Check out Clayton and Kroom.com. That's C-R-U-M-E.com. Starting point is 00:44:12 Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:44:37 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here at KS. Bar Grill. We open at 11 o'clock. Come on out and have lunch. Tomorrow night, the Mike, or Mike Tyson, Jake Paul fight is here. Is it Jake or Logan, Mario? Jake. Jake, yeah. So we're going to show it here on the televisions. You know, it's just, it's on Netflix, but like you can't have it in a public establishment or they will come and arrest you. Like, it's like 10 years in prison. So we bought it. But we will have it here tomorrow night, if that's your. thing, you can watch Tyson and Jake. I've had zero interest in boxing the last 20 years. But you're watching this. But this one interests me.
Starting point is 00:45:28 Yes. Jake is a minus two is basically minus 230 favorite on the betting odds. How I'll be rooting for Mike. Man, the age difference. Jake has gotten huge. Why shouldn't I put just a ton of money on the guy who's not 58 years old? And the guy who's promoting company has put it together. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:47 I mean, I feel like in my, in my cravat. crazy that that's free money? I would love to lose that money. I would love for Mike Tyson to knock him out. I just don't think that's going to happen. I feel like, I mean, he's 58. He fought. I mean, Jake has beaten guys his own age.
Starting point is 00:46:03 This dude's 30 years older than he is. Yeah, you know, he's my age. I'm a political guy, but this ain't a haybell throwing championship in Lebanon. But, you think Mike Tyson's going to win, right? Well, I mean, I think if it were 100% legit, I think he would, but I don't think this is going to be 100% legit. I think there's going to be some shenanigans involved. So you think if it was legit, Mike Tyson would win at 58.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Yeah, I do. Okay. Yeah. I just think about the end of people's career where they were getting knocked out by just random dudes. Yeah. And that happened to him at 38. But I know, but now it's 20 years later. Right.
Starting point is 00:46:38 And have you seen Mike Tyson? Yeah, I don't care. He looks like a badass at 58. I know. But, but, well, okay, see, this is how they get you. Like, I know this is, I know this is ridiculous, but I'm having. a legitimate argument with Shannon about it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:53 So tomorrow night we'll have it on here. Feel free to come watch. And then the women play Saturday. We're opening, by the way, at 10, at 10, 9. I don't know. Games at 1.30. But we're opening early for breakfast for the Murray State game. Our breakfasts are really good.
Starting point is 00:47:10 And you're going to be gone. So it's going to be me, Drew, Max, and Miles, which has a potential to go way off the race. Oh, my goodness. Miles is coming in. I didn't know that. I'm in trouble. And so this is, if you've ever wondered what is like KSR, the closest on radio to uncensored, I think Drew, Max, and Miles may be the one that does it.
Starting point is 00:47:29 I can control myself with one of them, but the two of those guys, they're a little too much fun, and I find myself joining them. All right, so Kentucky confirmed that, basically Stoops confirmed that there are some roster issues going forward, that they were planning on having 95 guys next year, and now they've been told it's 85. and they have to figure out how to how to navigate that. What I told you about walk-ons, that actually is not going to go into effect until the next year. So that's not an issue.
Starting point is 00:47:59 But they were basically planning on having 95 scholarships, and now they're going to have 85. And Stoop said, quote, I'm spending, well, not quote, but something to the effect of, I'm spending more of my time this week on roster management than the game, which is not a great sign, I guess. But what do you make of that?
Starting point is 00:48:19 I heard him say that, and he's already said something like he was having to spend too much time with boosters and a meeting for NIL money. It makes me think there's more and more things adding up that he's anti-job, you know? I will tell you this. I've talked to like three people very much in the program, and none of them really know what he's going to do. I personally just don't believe the I'm definitely not. I'm definitely coming back. I mean, I'm not saying he won't come back. It's probably more likely he comes back than not, but I don't think it's been decided at all.
Starting point is 00:48:53 And, you know, I don't know. I still think how the next three weeks go matters, Drew. I mean, they're going to win Saturday, but then after that, there's a big difference between playing a competitive game at Texas and beat Louisville than getting blown out at Texas and losing the Louisville. Like, those are very different results at the end of the year. Yeah, on that, I don't think Strups has any idea. I didn't believe zero percent.
Starting point is 00:49:16 he'll make that decision when the season's over. But the numbers thing, they have a pretty big issue on their hands because if you just took the freshman you've already got commitments from and said by to seniors, you're still over. That's not counting going to the portal, and it's very obvious they need portal help right away. We know plenty of positions that have underachieves. So there's going to have to be some difficult conversations,
Starting point is 00:49:36 and they got to hope some guys that are on the team now want to go step into the point. And they lost their four-star receiver commitment yesterday. They had a four-star receiver commitment who backed out. A lot of people think going to LSU, I mean, I understand. You know, I mean, if LSU offers you, that's wide receiver you in some way, so I get it. This was not the year to show your receivers what you're capable of.
Starting point is 00:49:58 No, I mean, but that's a tough, that's a tough loss for them on the thing. But then again, you know, they're going to have to get some losses or they're not going to be able to get the numbers that they need to get. Who's up next? Leah. Leah, go ahead, Leah. Hey, Matt. I'm a longtime listener for a third generation graduate, and I went to the game. I'm from Atlanta and went to the game two nights ago,
Starting point is 00:50:19 and I just have to say it was just such sweet redemption for the lifelong fans that suffered all the losses with Duke that we have, they have had the years that we've had in the past. There were three Duke guys that were sitting behind us, and they made the comment, when did Atlanta become a home field or home turf for Kentucky basketball? The fans were just amazing. It was an amazing scene.
Starting point is 00:50:39 So I just want to give a shout out to everybody and just say it's just a great feeling to be back in this position. Yeah, that's exactly right. I appreciate it. I mean, Atlanta used to be what we now say Nashville is, Ryan, right? I mean, it used to be where the Kentucky crowds always came, and it was great to see that come back. Yeah, we called it Catlanta for a reason,
Starting point is 00:50:58 because when the SEC tournament was there, year after year after year, Kentucky would take over the arena. And a couple of my friends who were at the game, they said the same thing the college just did. It was a home field advantage, home court advantage, because all the blue and all the Kentucky fans that were in there, made it feel like Catlanta again. I'm forgetting which website did it,
Starting point is 00:51:13 but I read a national story yesterday, and it kind of led with we saw why that's Catlana. It's basically saying Catlana's back. That's Kentucky City. Yeah. And such a, again, a celebration for all the reasons that we talked about. Let me ask you, we said before the game, we'll know how good we are. How good are we?
Starting point is 00:51:31 By the way, the ESPN new power rankings have us eighth. Is that right? You think that's about right? I think even though they won the game, they didn't even play their best basketball. I think there's a lot of, there's better basketball to come from this team. So you're asking me how good they can be. I think it would be a lot better than I even thought. But that's not how good?
Starting point is 00:51:49 Really good. Okay, but give me put it into some sort of rating system behind the Rhine really good. Okay, I'll go really, really good. No, I'm serious. Give me a number system. I'd say I had them hoping just to get to the second week in the NCAA tournament. Now I can see this team legit making a final four run. Yeah, I haven't seen all the teams right now, but they have to be a top 10 team,
Starting point is 00:52:14 especially with that win. I think the ratings might even reflect that next week and they get corrected. To beat Duke, a team with all that talent the way they did with Jackson Robinson not making shots and the way they started looking a little scared, I think they still have so much more to show. Yeah, me too. I actually would put them eight to 12. So I thought having an eight was very generous and fair. You know, I mean, I still think there's like five teams that I definitely would put ahead of them, Gonzaga.
Starting point is 00:52:41 But we play Gonzaga. we're going to play Alabama, so we're going to know what it's like against those two teams, you know, over the course of the next year. Tennessee is right there. We're going to play Auburn. So, I mean, right now we're scheduled to play three of the six top six teams in the ESPN ratings. We're going to play Auburn, Gonzaga, and Alabama. Tennessee is about like we are. So, I mean, we're going to get good test.
Starting point is 00:53:05 The Clemson test will be interesting to me because Clemson is like a lot of the games you're going to play in the SEC on the road. Yeah. Right? We're going to play a team that we are better than them, but they're on their home floor. You know, Marcus and Duran know what those environments are like when you come to town for the one time over two years. In Clemson's case, we've never gone there. So I think that's going to be, that'll be a really interesting test for the team when they get there. A friend of mine asks, how is Matt not driving you to the Clemson game on the way to Gonzaga?
Starting point is 00:53:35 It's not really on the way. Everything's on the way. If it's not right, I mean, that's really the opposite way. They never stopped us in the past.
