Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on, a Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last?
Starting point is 00:02:26 Tell me what you know. is somebody coming after me. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Comedy Off Broadway in Lexington welcomes Akash Singh, November 1st and 2nd, then catch Josh Prey, November 8th and 9th. And don't miss Chris Porter, November 14th through the 16th. Comedy Up Broadway opened in downtown Lexington in 1987, and they're still bringing the best in stand-up comedy to the area 30. 37 years later.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Call 859-271 joke or visit Comedyoff Broadway.com. Comedy off... The cats! That's awesome. There you go. City of Louisville comes through every time we are here at Whiskey Thief tasting room in Newloo. It is located, what, Hancock Street here, right off of Market and Broadway. It is an absolutely packed house here at Whiskey Thief.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Come on out on the... What is it? Nanny goat strut. Nanny goat strut, which, by the way, was the practice of walking your goats around on goat racing day in the alley. Nanny goat strut road here in Louisville. You can give the shout. The clock's pubbing shop phone line 859-280-2287. A vision auto glass.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Text machine is 772-745254. This edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. You call T.J. on Make a Pay. I don't really know, Ryan, what more you would want from a remote. First of all, you have a packed house of Kentucky fans here. in the city of Louisville. If you don't want to say, if you want to see what beating Duke will do for you, just look in here right now.
Starting point is 00:04:08 We don't get to do a lot of remotes in Louisville, and when we do, you get to have a big day, and this is one of them. By the way, just so you know the next time we'll be in this building will be the day before Kentucky plays Arkansas in February. So I think that will probably be a pretty big crowd here. Smart booking right there, right? Whoever was in charge of booking this, I think you picked a pretty good day. I was amazed.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I looked at the calendar. That one stayed free for way too long, considering what's happening the next day. So we will be here in Louisville for that. It is a beautiful, well, it's not a beautiful day outside, but it's cool to be with all the Big Blue Nation here. Look, this is another indication how much people are excited about Mark Pope and the basketball program. Place is full of blue in Louisville, and this is an awesome facility Whiskey Thief has here. This is beautiful. So, yeah, we've been at Whiskey Thief at their distillery out in Shelbyville,
Starting point is 00:04:56 but this is their tasting room here in Louisville. in Newlu, and let me just say for people in the rest of the state, you know, I always get angry when people have a perception of Louisville is a terrible place. It's much, I think it's for people who don't come here. But this section down here, especially of Newlo, where the old Shannon OVW offices were. That's right. I remember that. Just a few years ago. Really?
Starting point is 00:05:18 Yeah, we sold out to the big corporations here and let them take it over. It is Shannon a really nice developing area. I was down here on like Friday night. There's people everywhere. Yeah, yeah, a beautiful area. A lot of nice restaurants. Now you can come down here at Whiskey Thief and fill your own bottle. It's a really cool area down here in Louisville.
Starting point is 00:05:37 And Drew is a Whiskey Thief person. They're giving the bourbon out today. I mean, you get free bourbon, free donuts. I don't know what else you could want. Yeah, notice when I walked in, they're walking around with the thieves, which is that big, like a gigantic straw, and they're just walking around and filling people's glasses. I don't even know if people are asking for more bourbon, but it's just being for it. Let's make sure we have Uber rides home, especially you, sir.
Starting point is 00:05:57 I'm watching you right there. I just kind of feel like you're going to be a little out of control today. That's my high school baseball coach's dad right there. I randomly figure that out today. High school baseball coach. I'm just saying, ma'am, keep him settled down. We need it's his birthday. Happy birthday.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Hey, celebrate. Happy birthday, Mr. Scott. I'll tell you what, since it's your birthday, if you want to go shirt off and do a lap with rhyme when it's over, feel free. I know. Well, you don't want to see me either. Yeah, we still do every day. So, well, all right, so this weekend, Kentucky basketball is off for quite a long time.
Starting point is 00:06:37 But Kentucky football team plays Murray State in a game that's going to be a route. At least I hope it's a route. They are not good. They're really not good. They're even for their division bad. Mark Stoops announced yesterday that Brock Van der Graft will start, but he hopes to play cutter-bowley quite a bit. that was sort of a let's hope we get a big lead and get this over. It reminds me, Ryan, the decision to start and Brock Vandergriff of many years ago when we played Austin P.,
Starting point is 00:07:05 which was a similarly bad team, and they started Luke Wright, and they thought, well, we don't need to start. And then we had to put Stephen Johnson back in the game. Then he got like a huge lead, and then they went back to Luke Wright after that, probably hoping they can just get the lead and then hand it off after that. You know, that lesson learned. Lesson learned when they did that against Austin Pee a couple years ago. But I think they want to get Brock on the field because, you know, he took a big pop against, was it Auburn? Auburn game.
Starting point is 00:07:32 No, Tennessee. Tennessee game. He took a big hit, left the game and never came back. So I think it's good just to get him on the field, you know, have three or four scoring drives, and then Yankee him out. It feels like that Tennessee game was a long time ago. I mean, think about it. Since that Tennessee game, you know, the basketball season has started and actually become the obsession of the Big Blue Nation.
Starting point is 00:07:55 but they still have three more football games, and they still have what, in my opinion, if Mark Stoops is going to stay, but even if he's not going to stay, this next month is a massive month for UK football as a program. Like if you, there is so much Drew going on in the next month. First of all, let me just go over a few of them.
Starting point is 00:08:18 Number one, is your coach going to stay? Which I think is an open question. Number two, if he stays. Is the defensive coordinator going to stay? How much of the staff is going to say? I think unless there's a disaster, you'll get the same OC back. But there's a chance Brad White may use this as a time to go do something out. Then you have the roster situation.
Starting point is 00:08:41 You have a ton of guys graduating. You've got dudes like Dane Key and Dionne Walker going to decide what they're going to do. Who are you going to have at quarterback? We think it'll be Brock Van de Griff, but I don't know if that's probably. 80% sure, but maybe not 100%. Then you have the scholarship issue. They probably have 95 scholarships promise. They can only have 85 guys.
Starting point is 00:09:05 So what do you end up doing that? Then you have the transfer portal. We're going to lose six or seven starters on defense. You're going to have to fill that with somebody. Are you going to be able to get it? And then you have setting up for revenue sharing, which is probably now getting pushed to one year off, but it's coming. And then I will also note you're going to have a new Congress and a new president that within the first 60 days are probably going to pass the legislation that's going to decide the next 25 years of college athletics.
Starting point is 00:09:36 So these next couple months for UK football are a pretty daunting couple months. My view of all that, Drew, is that's a lot of change. And it's change that's coming. It's rolling around the bend and it doesn't matter whether we want it or not. It's coming. unless Mark Stubbs wants to look at that and say, I want to be part of all that, because it's a lot, then I think he has to make a decision one way or the other,
Starting point is 00:10:02 but it has to be looking at that and going, I'm on my way, I'm part of it, I'm going to lead the pack. Yeah, this will be his hardest offseason to date, probably by far. Just the roster situation by itself is going to be very difficult. I think they thought they were going to go ahead and get the 105 scholarships. It's looking like we'll eventually come a year later. But they already have a big recruiting class.
Starting point is 00:10:22 You've got a few seniors. You want some guys hit the portal, but they're going to have to hit the portal just to be talented again. And they're just not many spots to go out and promise guys. There's going to be some difficult conversations with players already on your team, maybe in your recruiting class. And after you handle all that, like I said, Brad White's name has been thrown around at other jobs. Do you think Stoops wants to go find another defensive coordinator? That position has been steady for him for a long time. You could have that on your plate.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Everything you just named, and it's all going to be on Stoop's plate. And we're looking at him right now. We already think he's winded of what he already has. That's what I think. Ryan, I sit there and look at that and go, I've listened to this dude basically say, I'm worn out, I don't get to do what I need. Even noted this week, he's having to spend time roster building instead of preparing for this game.
Starting point is 00:11:06 Do you, I want you to think about for a minute on the basketball side. Let's say you had to get 13 players like Mark Pope did. Don't you have to have kind of a Mark Pope energy to go fill that roster in one month? Remember he was here, he was there, he was there, he was here, he was there. Whether Mark Stubes wants to or not, that's what he's going to have to do this offseason. Now, I do think, by the way, in two years, college sports is going to be in a better place. Regardless, I mean, on the legislation side, it honestly didn't matter who would win the presidency or the Congress.
Starting point is 00:11:38 It was going to get passed, but it now, with them all being the same party, there's a good chance it'll be easier to pass. Like, in two years, this is going to look better, but this is going to be a hell of a two. years for coaches. And does Mark Stoops have the energy to do that? Because if you're signing up for, here's my view. Mark, if you're signing up for another year, then you need to be signing up for five years. Because this next year is going to be chaos. So if you, like, you need to be wanting to do this for a long time.
Starting point is 00:12:07 And you guys both said exactly what I was thinking. Does Pope, I mean, does Mark Stubbs have enough gas in the tank to do that? He's hinted several couple times how he doesn't like dealing with the NIL. Well, he's going to get over that. You know what I mean? He will have to. So does he have enough energy and gas in the tank to want to fight through that and get to next season? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:26 I'm going to assume, Drew, they're going to win Saturday by a lot. They better. How much do you think the two weeks after that will matter? Like, do you think with our fan base, like, let me just do a survey. People don't like what I do this when I did it with Cal, but to be fair, we'll do the same with Stoops. You guys had your druthers. How many of you would like to see Mark Stoops the coach next year? raise your hand okay if you had your druthers how many would go in the other direction
Starting point is 00:12:54 probably 75 70 30 bring back so again i do think it's important when you're online that's not necessarily representative of the fan base is whole this was probably three to one you know 70 30 come back so with that said do you think if we get blown out at texas and lose to louisville if i did this survey in three weeks it would be different it'd be a little different we keep comparing it to Cal, but there was a point last year, even the year before, but part of the reason I was ready for that to end because there was a portion of the fan base that was just not coming back with him. And it made things awkward.
Starting point is 00:13:29 It's, that started having with suits. Do you think the fan base is that there with football? It's a smaller group, but if you are terrible the rest of the year, that group's going to get a little bit bigger. And then you don't want to get to the point where coming back next year, he's only going to have 60, 70 percent support going into a year. You don't really want that. So I think it's important to, I really want to beat Louisville, obviously.
Starting point is 00:13:48 and be competitive against Texas just to keep people on if he is coming back. But if he does come back and even handles the offseason well, next year's schedule is so hard, he could do well this off season and still not make a bowl, because next year is going to be just a crazy to be on schedule. Ryan, I think sometimes when you're looking at people who take criticism, you have to ask yourself, how much do they know about it? And part of that means how online are they? Like, how connected are they?
Starting point is 00:14:14 Part of John Caliperi's problem is he was hyper awful. line. Like he had no idea how much the fan base had turned on him. I don't think he had any idea. I don't think he realized it until he walked out down the aisle at the gate in the SEC tournament at Texas A&M. People close to him will say that was shocking to him and then it was even more shocking when they lost to Oakland and Pittsburgh. Now let's go the other way. The football program is hyper online. Okay. Those folks know what the fan base thinks online. Probably too much, to be honest with you. Like, they're hyper-engaged.
Starting point is 00:14:53 All of the coaches are online, including the head one. Like, they feel it all. Do you think that factors in? Because I think if you just look at that survey I did, the fan base online is in many ways much, much more negative than the fan base as a whole. Do you think, like, him feeling like they don't have support will factor in? Just knowing Stoop's like we do,
Starting point is 00:15:14 it seems like it would a little bit, because, you know, we hear him after these long. and he sounds as defeated as I feel. You know, he sounds beat down. That's why if you're asking me, I think probably a little bit, it does factor into it. I think it factors into it. I think he feels like he doesn't have the support,
Starting point is 00:15:32 which makes me even more say, man, if you're going to come back, you better be like embracing all the things you did when you started. Because if we have, for the future Kentucky football, this next year can't be dead man walking. because this is going to be the year where programs start to separate, Drew, because the new rules are coming and they're going to lock in for the next 25 years. And you better be ready to play at that moment.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Yeah, and this one's a little different than most coaching searches. I'll use the Cal example again. There is a fear of the uncertainty of what we could get. Stoops right now kind of has John Someraw working against him. He does. Because there are fans that don't want, John Summorrow is getting a big job. Could be Auburn, could be in the SEC. see. There are fans that have a fear of having to face a John Sumerall in another school for many years.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Well, this is probably a fact. John Summoral will get another job this year. And if this one comes open, it'd probably be this one. If this one doesn't come open, we're going to be watching him somewhere else. That's why I think there are people kind of against stoop with that opportunity in front of us. That's exactly right. Day 599-28027. I'm going to talk some basketball. We got some potentially really good news on a top five recruit. And now all of a sudden people are starting to to say Mark Pope's team might be a national championship contender. That was said by two national folks yesterday. We'll take a break and be right back.

I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:18:32 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Starting point is 00:18:50 The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.
Starting point is 00:19:14 It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness.
Starting point is 00:20:07 So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this plant
Starting point is 00:20:27 to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told,
Starting point is 00:20:44 move on, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
Starting point is 00:21:13 for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put it. on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio
Starting point is 00:21:30 here at Whiskey Thief's Tasting Room. They're open. Just so you know, they're open Monday through Friday from 10 to 5, and then on the weekends, 11 to 5, they get it's a great place if you're on the bourbon trail to come by. But today it's a great place for Kentucky fans. I see
Starting point is 00:21:46 one dude in the back wearing red. I'm sure it's not for, I'm sure it's not Louisville red, right? So you're not what, you're not a Louisville fan, are you? Uh-oh. Oh. That hide in your face is what you all have had to do for the last five years. It's been pretty embarrassing. By the way, I'm going to say this.
Starting point is 00:22:07 If you all don't beat us in football this year, there's like a 10-year time you're not allowed to speak about anything. Because this is the year to get us, and if you don't get it, then I don't think it's happening. I'm going to read you where I am, Drew. This is on the text machine. This isn't me that wrote this. Somebody else wrote this, but it's kind of encapsulates my feeling.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Matt, Mark Stoves has gone to nine straight bowls and had a winning season every year minus the COVID year. Yes, this season has been a big disappointment, but is that all it takes at Kentucky football? One losing season, and he's done. This isn't like Kentucky basketball, which, by the way, had two losing seasons. UK basketball is of blue blood and has had four bad seasons.
Starting point is 00:22:47 seasons in a row, stoop should get another chance. I agree with that pretty much completely with one caveat. For me, it's about are you, you're always going up or you're going down, right? Like it's not just about, you know, you judge Cal's resume in the hole. It's still really good. But it was clear it was going down. I got to make sure when I hear Mark talk, are we going back up? or are we just like,
Starting point is 00:23:16 grumpy old man, this is not as much fun as it was. Like, are you going up? Are we going down? Yeah, I'm the same way, and I keep using the cow comparison. But just like with him, I worry if you just keep having these bad seasons, the legacy and everyone that loved you, it's just going to keep getting worse and worse. And right now, we all know this has not been a good year.
Starting point is 00:23:36 But overall, I would say most people we just saw here, are still pretty fond of stoops like stoops, love what he did here. But if you come back next year and don't make a bowl, and there's more complaining. I just hate about the overall legacy. All right. So yesterday, the national media felt like they all kind of decided to weigh in on Kentucky basketball. I'll give you some of the feelings.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Myron Metcalf said Kentucky basketball is a national championship contender. Field of 68 said that national championship contender. Other people seem to stay, hey, gutsy performance, but hang on just a second, okay, before everybody gets too excited. Yes or no? Do you think this Kentucky team is a national championship contender? I said yesterday, I've kind of flipped. I think now they could definitely make a final four run,
Starting point is 00:24:23 whether they can win the national championship or not? Yes or no. Is a national championship contender? I'll say yeah, because I think they can make a final four run. I'll say yeah. Yep. I mean, I won't put them top five contenders. I'll put them top ten contenders, though.
Starting point is 00:24:35 I'm not, we still got a long way to go. When the tournament gets here, in my current mind state, I would not expect them to make the run, but also would be cheering it on, and it wouldn't surprise me if they made that run. I'll go yes, because they just beat a top 10 team with their best player having an awful night,
Starting point is 00:24:51 and they didn't even play as good as they can as a team overall, and they still won the game for that reason alone. Even though it's early, I want to say yes. All right, so then I'm going to be the bummer, and I'm going to say, booboo. Well, here, let me say, I'm going to say, not yet. Yeah, that's supposed to be me.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Yeah. You take my mind. The only reason I'm saying not yet. is I we won yeah okay and we won and they we were that was the gutsiest win and like I thought it was a Mark Pope win in a lot of ways still though at the end of the game at the end of the game like we cleared out with Andrew car like two out three out of four times I'm not sure that that's a recipe to win a national championship I got to see Jackson Robinson play well right I mean Duke's not going to shoot 17% every game from three.
Starting point is 00:25:40 I got it, Jackson Robinson, if he's not a dude, if he's not a dude, then we're going to be a dude short. So I think we are a Final Four contender, like you said. I wouldn't put us as a national championship contender yet. But if you take those dudes and Oway plays like he does and Chandler plays like he, or, excuse me, Carr plays like he does, the bigs play like it, Butler, yes, but I got Jackson Robinson's going to have to play well. We, Drew, we won't consistently get those results unless he plays well. I agree, and I'm up the belief. That was just a one-off for him because he had a lot of great games at
Starting point is 00:26:15 BYU all ready for Pope. One thing that also helps me like Kentucky in the tournament is we've all talked about preparation. You know, you're getting a quick turnaround, not knowing your opponent. I don't think we have a coach that's going to say we'll show up and be the better team. I think they're going to be very prepared in that tournament setting where coaching can really matter on that short turn. Which leads me to, I want to play this quote. This was Mark Pope yesterday. And this was in his press conference, or I guess, was this yesterday two days ago? Maybe two days ago. Yeah, two days ago when he was talking about how his teams are going to work
Starting point is 00:26:45 and how they're going to prepare. Go ahead and play that, Rick. Listen, if you come play Kentucky, then you're going to play for 40 minutes and we're not going away and we're not backing down and we're not changing. We're going to keep coming and coming and coming. That doesn't mean that we're going to win every game. It means that you're going to have your hands full and you're not going to be able to breathe for 40. straight minutes.
Starting point is 00:27:08 I love that. I love that because I think that's how we won the game, to be honest with you. I think they just kept coming at them, coming at them, and then in about six minutes, Duke wore down, even though they might have been the better team. Remember, Cooper Flagg, with like nine minutes to go, had two free throws to put them up double digits. He missed them both, and then we came down, hit a three,
Starting point is 00:27:29 got a two, cut it to four, and it was a game. I think that's what he's talking about, that, coming, coming, coming. That's why I think this could really be a team to make a final four run. They showed enough grit and fight to be 10 points down against one of the best teams in the country and one of your best players having an off night and they still were able to cut into that lead. I don't think that the teams with past could have done that here. Well, they haven't done it since pre-COVID.
Starting point is 00:27:51 That's the last time we've been down 10 points and come back and won. Yeah, we still have a lot to figure out this whole team. But as they look now, I just think with the three-pointer, hopefully there will be a cold game in six in a row. Hopefully it's one of the early rounds. You can still overcome that instead of getting cold later in the tournament. But also if they get hot in the tournament, I don't care who's in front of them. They can shoot somebody in the gym.
Starting point is 00:28:10 The way they play, too, I hate to compare them to the 90s teams, but they do remind me. I can't help but think about when Mark Pope was a player here at Kentucky and how those teams played. That's how this Kentucky team has played so far this year. This team reminds me of the second Patino team that won the SEC was not allowed to go to the tournament, but was like, you can remember it, Mark. Like they, Mashburn was a freshman, so he wasn't yet the Mashburn we came to know. And they just kind of outplayed everybody and they ended up winning the SEC.
Starting point is 00:28:42 That's kind of how this group reminds me. And maybe their peak, Ryan, is 2003, Kentucky, where on the surface, Bogans, Fitch, Daniels, Hayes, Estel, that's not a team that on the paper should be great. And they ended up being number one in the country, in part because of just how they played so hard to get. outwork you, they're smarter than you, they execute better than you, and they smother you when they need to. And that's what this team is capable of. Hawkins, like, none of those dudes. None of those dudes except Bogans were pros. But they just kept working. Yep. But the key for that team, Drew, was Bogans became a star, and we're probably going to need Jackson, to become a star.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Yeah, and everybody on the team, it's most likely going to be him. There's a lot of basketball left and a lot of help around him. Someone will rise, and hopefully it's him to become a creator. Maybe it's O-way. I mean, that's who. was playing so good the other night. All right, we're going to take your calls and take a break. We are here at Whiskey Thief in Louisville. See, it looks like Lexington because we still pack it better than Louisville ever can. This is more people than they had at their first game the other night.
Starting point is 00:29:46 We'll take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here at Whiskey Thief. If you are in the Louisville area, come on down and join us. Free bourbon. They got all kinds of drinks. They got everything going.
Starting point is 00:30:05 My Louisville fan in the back needs to show. shut up. If you're going to come, you can't talk during the show. All right. You talk during the commercials, but I'll let you wear red, but you can't yap during the show. 859-280-2287. A couple shoutouts here. First of all, happy 30th birthday to Andrew Meyer. I hope you have a big 30th birthday. And a big shout-out to former, well, not a former, current KSR legendary caller Radio Ron, is 90th. Yeah. There he is.
Starting point is 00:30:36 90. I don't think you've been to a remote since COVID, have you? Yes, so very nice to see. Still competing in shot putt and all sorts of other games. I mean, still winning gold medals by making sure nobody else is in it. Hey, you know what? A gold's a gold. A gold is a new division now in the 90s.
Starting point is 00:30:56 A gold is a gold. We are here at Whiskey Thief in Louisville, located in Newloo. We've got folks been waiting on the phone, so I'll go to him. Who's up first? up first. Dee, go ahead, Dee. Hey, I'm going to my first football game tomorrow, and I heard you guys are opening up for breakfast.
Starting point is 00:31:15 So I was doing what time, because I'm traveling all the way from e-calf. We're opening up. The bar will open up at nine, serve breakfast. Pre-game show starts at 9.30. So it's good breakfast. We don't serve it a lot, only three or four times a year. So come on out tomorrow, but the bar opens at nine.
Starting point is 00:31:32 Pre-game show starts at 9-30. So would you guys have biscuits and girls? gravy because that's my biggest go. I mean, I can't give you the menu. I don't, you know. It's good. Usually biscuits and gravy are there, but I'm not in the kitchen tomorrow. So you might, so I think you may just have to trust it's like breakfast.
Starting point is 00:31:51 I'd probably be there and make sure that guys got it then. Okay, please do. And if you don't, family recipe. All right. Appreciate the call. Any other menu questions, 859-280-2287? Who's up next? Vicki is up next.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Vicki. Go ahead, Vicki. Ye doggy, honey, I got that film for you. Jim, and he cricket, what a game. This is naked Vicki and Cynthia. So you, when we beat. I couldn't get on the next day. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:32:20 So when we beat Duke, you ran. Okay, I got you, Vicki. So you ran out naked? Oh, yeah, and my husband, Leslie's hard, honey, he's into 70s, and he's out there trying to film. He doesn't fell down twice, but we got it done. I mean, that had to be. That had to be exciting for your husband to see you out.
Starting point is 00:32:40 I mean, he's in his 70s. You give him a heart attack running around naked like that. Hey, hon, you know, we're rock and rolling. We've been married 34 years. It's all good. But my kid bits got all cold. I'm glad to hear that. I'm glad the personal life is going well, Vicki.
Starting point is 00:32:56 So you have clothes on now, just to be clear, right? Okay. So did you? That's right. That's right. And look, you got an album to me on Facebook, my first, second, third cousin's all called. Freaking out. So did you send me the video, you know, from a tasteful angle?
Starting point is 00:33:11 I don't know how to. I sent you a text machine the day after, but I didn't get on. Are you on? Well, I was going to say you can't send it on Twitter, but now you can put it to touch on anything on Twitter. I'll see worse. I'll tell you what. If you send the video on the text machine, I'll get it. Just wait until after the show, okay?
Starting point is 00:33:29 Because we get a lot during the show. Okay. No problem. And then you can check it out, and then you can decide if it's all that. All right, well, I'm not going to say, did you say decide if it's all that? Is that what you said? Yes, it's okay to show is what I'm saying. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:33:46 I thought you meant you were like wanting me to judge if you were all that. I was, I know, I already know I'm all that. Okay, well, good. Go ahead. I got to admit. But here, though, Matt, I really wants to see it. The part of me really doesn't. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:33:58 Go ahead. What did you say? That's right. I just got to say, honey, you've got to be a Ted. You got to be a Ted last time. You've got to believe. Don't be doubt. And cats, now come on.
Starting point is 00:34:08 All right, Vicki. I appreciate it. Thank you for sitting. Thanks for calling. All right, go cats, baby. Well, as I say, a part of me really wants to see it. There's a part of me that does not want to see it. That's not very nice.
Starting point is 00:34:20 She sounds fun to hang out with. I mean, give her a compliment. Why would you say that? Like, I think Shannon, no, I know you want to see it. I want to see it right now. Send it, Vicki. What are you doing? What's taking so long?
Starting point is 00:34:33 You're an uplifter, aren't you? You're an uplifter. I like to have fun. For the next big game, I might meet her in Cynthia and take a lap myself. We'll just get a little parade going. All right. Well, who's up next? Bruce is next.
Starting point is 00:34:48 Bruce, how are you, Bruce? Do you guys remember the starting lineup action figures from like the 80s and 90s? Oh, yeah. I had several of them. Can you name the Kentucky players that have a starting lineup figure? Oh, I have no idea. Who are they? Rex is probably one of them.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Rex Chapman is one. There's about three more. Well, I don't know. And we can't sit and guess. So go ahead and tell us. Oh, come on. Yes, you can. Ron Mercer, Antoine Walker and Jamal Mashburn.
Starting point is 00:35:20 All right, there you go. Well, I appreciate it. Do you have them? I have an in-the-box, Rex Chapman. All right, well, good. Well, congratulations. I don't know what to say to that. I'm glad he has it.
Starting point is 00:35:34 That's nice. Who's up next? Appreciate it. Austin is up next. Austin. Go ahead, Austin. I'm hearing that Caleb Wilson once again canceled his visit to Arkansas. It's upcoming weekend, and I just want to know if that's true.
Starting point is 00:35:48 And if it is, what's he waiting on for him to commit to us? Yeah, so it is true. Appreciate the call. Caleb Wilson, for people who don't follow recruiting closely, Caleb is a top five player, would probably put Kentucky into the place. where they're locked in is the number two overall recruiting class. But probably for our purposes is the main we went head to head with Cal and beat him for a guy.
Starting point is 00:36:13 He's down to Kentucky, Arkansas, North Carolina. He was at the Kentucky Duke game on Tuesday in Atlanta. He was supposed to visit Arkansas this weekend, and he canceled his visit. He is supposed to decide in December or early January. Drew, I mean, we don't know for sure, but that's got to be a pretty good sign. We don't know for sure, but we're about as close as to for sure it could be right now.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Yeah. Did you see the video of Jack Pilgrim's interview with him where he talks about Arkansas? No, go ahead. It almost be worth digging up. But, I mean, the kid clearly has a good relationship with Cal. But he says in this video, I don't really know anything about Arkansas. I didn't even know they were in the SEC. He's trying to be polite, but he basically says, I have never heard of this place, Caltech.
Starting point is 00:36:58 He said they didn't know he was in the SEC. I mean, you can tell. He's like stopping himself before he says things. he's trying not to be disrespectful because he does have a good relationship with Cal. But the kid does not know where Arkansas is and has not heard of Arkansas basketball. Sounds like he doesn't want to visit either. Well, that goes to my bigger point of, you know, Cal has the line of don't worry, nothing's changed but the location.
Starting point is 00:37:17 I don't think they know where your location is is the problem there. Because in the interview, it's very clear he knows nothing about Arkansas. Yeah, I mean, you know, and Cal deserves credit for this. But Cal Ryan in part to a new generation. I mean, to old generations, Kentucky's always been basketball. But to a new generation, Cal made Kentucky to where it was like, along with Duke, basketball. And now to try to sell that in Arkansas is probably a 10 to 15-year job that he's probably not going to stay there long enough to do. Yeah, I think one of the big attraction was they were just offering a lot of NIO money to this guy.
Starting point is 00:37:55 But he really wanted to kind of play at Kentucky. But they're offering so much more. Kentucky up their offer. may not be as much as what Arkansas offer, but they up their offer enough for this kid. I don't think it's coincidence. He was at the Duke Kentucky game and cancels his visit to Arkansas after the game. Yeah, I think the story I heard was that basically Arkansas has offered the most. I don't know what the raw number is.
Starting point is 00:38:19 But Kentucky's offered like 75% of that and North Carolina is at like 50 or 60. And that, you know, he's just having to convince himself take less money. to be at Kentucky, which, you know, if you end up doing that with a top kid, and also turning down a coach who's produced 50 pros for a coach who's produced none. You know, I mean, that's a pretty, if Pope's able to do that, that's pretty impressive. Yeah, and I haven't talked to this kid, but reading up on other stories that we've written in other people, Pope has done a really good job forming a relationship with him. I guess they have a lot of common interest beyond basketball.
Starting point is 00:38:58 It just goes to show you, I know sometimes Pope might. feel a little corny or, you know, too smart of a guy in the room, but he's really gotten to know Caleb Wilson very well, and they have a great relationship. And this is also something we have to change our mindset on Shannon, like, guys my age, I know this sounds weird, but guys my age kind of looked at Cal like, well, now that's the cool young coach. Right. But he ain't young anymore.
Starting point is 00:39:23 You know what I mean? Like these other coaches like Mark Pope or Hubert Davis or John Shire, they're the young coaches now. Cal's like kind of the way we probably looked at, you know, in 2010, he might be how I looked at Roy Williams, right? Like as the old coach, that's kind of how Cal is now. You know, I look at this in this particular recruitment as the brand Kentucky selling itself.
Starting point is 00:39:47 You know, we wonder sometimes, does Kentucky still have that allure that it did, you know, in the early Cal years? And before that, I think it still does. And just if you had just watched the Kentucky game Tuesday, night and the Arkansas game Wednesday night. Ryan, which style do you want to play? Like, which style do you want to play? You want to get up and down the court, or do you want to sit there and hold it and try to
Starting point is 00:40:10 score 64, five points? Like, it's different. That's a great point. Caleb Williams is, they're watching Kentucky coming behind to beat Duke, may have watched the Arkansas game on TV and like, oh, I don't want to play in this. They struggle. They're struggling offensively to beat Troy. And again, when John Wall came, Cal was playing the exciting style.
Starting point is 00:40:29 Yeah. And now the exciting style is a different thing. Who wouldn't want to come here where you can shoot 10-3s a game? I mean, what player wouldn't want to play for a coach like that? Ron Lam said he would. Pope is telling these big recruits, go ahead and start launching threes, because that's what I want you to do. And if you're a big guy and you're being told a year in advance, like while you're in high school, go ahead and start letting them fly.
Starting point is 00:40:48 Well, he means it. He let Brandon Garrison shoot that shot at the end of the game, and it went in. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live at Whiskey Thief. Starting point is 00:46:08 They have the same, this is the same type of thing, but in a relaxed atmosphere. And it's a beautiful place down here in a growing part of Louisville in New Lou. Shannon, I read some news that is new to me. It may not be new to other people in here, but I had no idea. So, you know, Trump. picked the guy who sounds like a frog to be the health secretary. Oh, I've got. Patrick Mahomes?
Starting point is 00:46:32 He did. He picked Patrick Mahomes. It was an interesting choice. And I, so people were putting, like, all the things he thought. And then that led me down a rabbit hole if I don't usually read about medicine, but I read something about medicine. And I didn't realize this. And maybe you did.
Starting point is 00:46:47 The FDA, a few months ago, and they're going to confirm this rule next week, potentially. The FDA, like, a few months ago, came out and said, you know, NyQuil and Sudafed and Mucinics, the FDA came out and said none of it works. Oh, really? So it's a placebo effect because none of it works. I always felt like it worked. Okay. They said what it's supposed to do, which is basically clean up your nasal spray and help you get rid of congestion. Yeah. There are things that work. The sprays work or whatever, but they said oral, whatever that base drug is that's in those. The oral cut.
Starting point is 00:47:27 Now, the spray works. But the oral part, they did a study in the 70s that said it worked, which is how they all got approved. But now they've redone the studies and they say it doesn't work with new methods. And that when you take it, your body breaks it down and makes it ineffective. And so they say that NyQuil and all that stuff that people think works if you take it orally does not work. And they think it's a placebo effect. And that after 50 years, we've taken NyQuil when we're sick, that it actually doesn't work. And I don't believe them.
Starting point is 00:48:03 Because I'm telling you, anytime I get sick, I don't care what it is. My go-to is always day-quil, and I'll always feel better the next day. Okay, but maybe you would feel better, you'd still feel better. The act of taking the day-quil makes you feel like it's getting better, and it would have anyway. I guess I'll waste a $10 on a bottle of day-quil. you what next time though i'm going to try it i just won't take you just try to see what happens look i'm not i'm not i'm not i believe in dake will man i do i'm just telling you yeah that they've said now that that and the fda is going to give its final word next week but that for 50 years we may have all been
Starting point is 00:48:42 taking this medicine myself included yeah when you get sick and that it may have always just not worked they do say if you take it as a spray that works i always do the syrup but the syrup and the pills don't work i think I think the FDA is sitting on a throne of lies. I don't believe one word you're saying. I don't either, man. I'm telling you. I'm with Shannon, man.
Starting point is 00:49:01 NyQuil is the go-to and you feel better. No, NyQuil helps you sleep, which may then help you get better. But they're talking about the actual drug that is there to think. They say it doesn't work. Even Mucinex is the go-to if you got a cough or congest in your chest, boom, won't I go get? So why don't you, I think Shannon's right. Why don't you next time? Just not do anything.
Starting point is 00:49:23 Not do anything. And see if you die. I'm just telling you I'm just telling you what the FDJ. And the only reason you're even getting to take it is because a long time the FDA, a long time ago they said it did work. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:38 And now they say it doesn't. I just find it interesting. It also proves why nobody believes anything because you got these knuckleheads going, I don't care what the side says. It works. It works for me. It may not work for everybody else.
Starting point is 00:49:49 It works for me, though. All I've heard this entire time is class action lawsuit. Where do I sign up? I've spent a lot of money on NyQuil. Amen. It's got a lot of money on DayQuil, Musinex. I think we should all get a fat payout. Maybe you will. Who's up next? Wade is up next.
Starting point is 00:50:01 Wade, go ahead, Wade. Hey, guys, I was just calling in to say that I usually don't love guests on the show. I like hearing you guys talk, but yesterday was just so fun hearing Duran and Marcus talk about all those stories. Did you guys like Duran and Marcus yesterday? I thought they were great. And they seemed, I was worried when they came. I was like, are these guys going to be into it? And they were.
Starting point is 00:50:23 I think we could have gone the whole second hour with them. I thought they were great. And I'll tell you how happy it made me when they hated on Terrence Jones rap song. It made me so happy that they're like, no, this is awful. You've been waiting on that for 10 plus years. I appreciate, sir. I thought they were great. You still there?
Starting point is 00:50:44 That's all he had to. By the way, we put the clip up of them saying they beat the thunder online, and it went very viral. There's a lot of people around the country not believing Marcus, Drew that are not believing Marcus and Dron that they beat LeBron and KD. I remember at the time when it happened. It's the truth and he confirmed it. I'm with you. I enjoyed how fun they were.
Starting point is 00:51:06 They were kind of in a show when they were here. Now they're adults and used to doing all this. They were a lot of fun. And they even stayed. I stuck around the bar after the show. They were there until about 1 o'clock just hanging out. It wasn't like it was an inconvenience. Yeah, you guys could come.
Starting point is 00:51:17 They were sitting there drinking and eating the wings for a while. And I didn't have to hit the dump button one time. That's the shocker to me. I was certain. I asked Duran Lam. Duran's been playing in Europe for a decade, and I was like, where's your favorite city? And he said, Istanbul.
Starting point is 00:51:35 I mean, if you had asked me when Duran Lamb was here in 2012, will that man say he looks forward to living in Istanbul? I wouldn't have thought that right. We really could have talked to them for hours. I wanted to hear their stories about when they play overseas in some of these cities like that. But he also cleared up. He doesn't sleep.
Starting point is 00:51:50 That was another legend that we needed to find, which was true. Which was true, yeah. The legend about the game. the legend about Marcus Tigg and things that he did there. I love that interview yesterday. By the way, I think he'd be okay with me saying this. The reason we know that story is Josh Hopkins was at that game. Josh Hopkins was watching practice the day it happened,
Starting point is 00:52:09 and that's kind of how we found out that story existed. Who's up next? Matthew is next. Matthew, go ahead, Matthew. Yeah, I have a question and a comment. I love your guys' show, and just the Duke game the other night. do you think maybe we might be able to go undefeated? If not, who do you think is going to beat us?
Starting point is 00:52:30 And not will do. There we go. I love it. I love it. I appreciate the call. 8-5-9-2-80-22-87. No, I do not think we'll be able to go undefeated. Not at all.
Starting point is 00:52:42 I do think, though, the amount of losses, Ryan, in my mind could be less. I mean, I kind of had us like 7, 8, 9. Maybe now I would say 4, 5, 6 as more the amount of losses. think we lose at least one of the Clemson-Gonzaga games on the road back to back. Man, they showed us something, man. We kind of said going into it. That's kind of a litmus test and see how good the Kentucky team really is. We all walked away like, man, this team can be really, really good this year.
Starting point is 00:53:07 But not undefeated. Not undefeated. Print the t-shirts, 40-0. Let's go. It would be fun if they did. I'm not going to predict it, but, you know, it's still on the table. Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of tough road games.
Starting point is 00:53:16 We got, we go to Alabama, we go to Tennessee. We go to, I think we go to A&M. I mean, we got some, we got some tough road games. Got those Texas and Oklahoma trips. They're not as good, but that'll be a fun. The good thing for us is Auburn comes here. Yeah. We don't have to go there this year.
Starting point is 00:53:33 They can find out of playing. And Arkansas comes to our place. And Arkansas comes here. So a couple of the good ones only play here. And I think A&M is really the only good team we only play on the road. We'll take a break and be right back. Hour number two, this is Kentucky.
