I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on, a Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. is somebody coming after me?

Starting point is 00:02:58 to the area 37 years later. Call 859271 joke or visit Comedyoff, Broadway.com. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone. Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, November the 18th, Revolution Day in Mexico, here at the KS Bar and Grill.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Well, not here in Mexico. It's Revolution Day. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Pubpit Shop phone line, 859. 280 2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-745254. In this edition, sponsor, by a T.J. Smith Law Office. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Come on out and have lunch. If you're the guy that's standing outside right now listening on your headphones,
Starting point is 00:03:44 you're welcome inside. It looks like he's looking trying to decide whether he can come in. You're welcome to come in. You'll hear this in about a minute and a half, Ryan, and then I'll just tell him to come right in the door. We got a guy here already that has, that's a cool sweatshap. It is. I've not seen one like that. I've not seen that. shirt. I saw this has nothing to do with anything, shockingly, but I saw a Michigan State hoodie, Drew, that had the Michigan State mascot dribbling. And I thought it was really cool.
Starting point is 00:04:14 We need to get a UK mascot dribbling. I think that would be a neat sort of alt logo. We need better logos. I mean, that's one thing. Louisville does well. Their Cardinals dunking. They're good. They're cardinal with the helmet. I wish our Wildcat got a little more activities. Cardinal doing the duggy. Yeah, like I think we could, we could have, you can still keep a wildcat, but let him do stuff. You know, let him hang out. You need some exercise. Yeah, have him go around.
Starting point is 00:04:36 He doesn't just have to sit there with his tongue out. He can go do things. Right. Well, that's where everybody wants the phallic tongue to come back. But that just has to be a phallic tongue. He can move. Well, yeah, he can put his tongue in his mouth while he's true. That's true.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Is it good? He doesn't have to be Michael Jordan with his tongue out. Back in the day, he was doing all kinds of things in the logo. There's one is like holding the bourbon gal. gallon. Yeah, the old Kentucky logos, there's like one he's got a cane. Yeah. Yeah. There's one where he, you're right. There's one he's like got bourbon. Let's have our cat do some things, you know. They need to kind of phase out the two fighting birds anyway, that logo, the two bird logo. You don't see that one as much anymore. You're talking about the birds having sex.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Yeah. Yeah. It just kind of seem to be kind of kind of phasing that out. But I can't look at it anymore since you said that. I wrote a post of all the things it looks like that aren't a wildcat. Like one of them looks like it's blowdry on his hair. Kind of got his hair going back behind him, two birds making love. Yeah, that's right. Here he comes. See, there you go. He heard it in the thing.
Starting point is 00:05:36 You're welcome to come in. 859-280-2287. So like this weekend, there was a lot of stuff that happened. But, I mean, I feel like you have to start with the football game. But I actually think that was the least interesting thing of the things that happened. Yeah. The game was by my estimation. six hours and a half long.
Starting point is 00:05:59 That was just the third quarter alone. It was the longest football game. It was the longest football game that I think has ever been played. In the third quarter, they threw seven flags in a row. Yes. Now, of course, they picked one of them up, which broke the street. But they threw seven flags on seven plays. Never seen that.
Starting point is 00:06:18 I've never seen that. And the reps needed to chill. You know what I mean? Drew, it's like, this game is 34 to 3. Just pick it up. Like, just let it. big go. It's no big deal. I thought we're all in agreement. That was a good opportunity to have a fun afternoon, get out of there quickly, have your Saturday night ahead of you, but the, uh, the refs didn't
Starting point is 00:06:35 get the message. They wanted to stay all night. Um, not a whole lot to say about the game, honestly. I mean, they didn't play the best to start, but then they started picking it up. By the second half, they had guys in that I didn't know we're on the team. I mean, it was like a choose your own adventure of names. You know, there was there was at one point, I think it was the third quarter there was a guy whose name was like a noosey scott that made a play and i thought that person's not on the team now they're just now they're just screwing with us right trying to make people up i saw the the smith twins from corbin they both got into the game there towards the end of the game but my big takeaway though was jimari on wilcox because he literally had over 200 rushing yards
Starting point is 00:07:15 if they didn't all get called back on penalty the dude was crazy good felt like he was kind of the breakout performer of the game don't you think like he if if we're assuming we're able to keep him which I don't know if you can assume that for anyone in the future, but let's assume we can. He's definitely running back one going into the future. I don't know why they waited until the second quarter to even let him get a touch. It's obvious he's the most talented back they have. I hope, I don't know the rules here, but I hope someone is already out shopping for his house and whatever it takes to get him to stay.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Do you have to get him a house? Whatever it takes. I hope surely they have already been recruiting him to retain him another year, but amp that all the way up because that is one they need to make sure. Don't even let him know there is a portal. The portal is closed for Jamarion Wilcox. You're staying here in Lexington. Didn't know the two guys that were calling the game.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Not sure they've, I'm not sure they've done it before. Well, it's okay. I mean, I'm going to hopefully have my first game coming here soon on ESPN radio. I was looking, by the way, at the bowl, you know, the bowl, like the setups. Because there's 12 teams in the playoff now, they got to go deeper into college football to get teams. Oh, there were some games that if that's the one we get assigned. Yeah. And look at Boise or Detroit or some location. I already know what they're going to assign us. I already feel it. There's a game in Detroit. See, that's close for both of us.
Starting point is 00:08:42 There's a game in Detroit. They're sending me a mire into that game. It's like the Detroit Auto Bowl. I know I'm getting that one. I'm going to know this week. They're going to tell us which games. They will. Yeah, they're going to tell us which game this week. But I just know, Drew. I just know that's the one I'm getting It's going to be in Detroit I'm sitting here thinking oh maybe we get to go to the Bahamas Or no we're going to end up in Detroit You're probably never going to get the Bahamas right
Starting point is 00:09:06 Was that a did you think that's an option? You don't think there's a way you don't think there's a way I could advance up the scale to get the Bahamas I just feel like there's probably a line of people Wanting the Bahamas game Detroit's good though it's a football town these days Good blue collar a lot of people be tuned into the radio Out working hard in the Motor City
Starting point is 00:09:24 A lot of people tune into the Detroit bowl I bet there's a lot of football radio listeners while they're out building cars and being Detroiters. Well, I think it's on nationally. So I don't think we only have to get the Detroit audience. I think we can get conceivably. Let me read you some of the options because I looked it up. The Detroit game is, it's called the Detroit Bowl. Oh, very creative.
Starting point is 00:09:47 So I think that means they didn't get a sponsor. Right now it says Michigan State Buffalo. You've already talked about. Mississippi State on the show and their mascot. But I don't think, what I worry about that game is I don't think it's going to be close. Like, so you don't, I don't think I want that one. I'd rather have, what about this one, Mobile Alabama, 68 Ventures Bowl. Wow.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Projected right now to be Arkansas State and Western Michigan. That could be a great, great game and you had one more adventure than you got the 69 adventures. You make that joke. Every year, Shannon, he makes that joke. That guy shook his head in the crowd because he knew Ryan makes that joke every time we read the bowl. He's already reading the dad joke book. Yes, that's why they don't assign you to it, is that you will do that. Would you prefer a blowout so you could talk about fast food restaurants?
Starting point is 00:10:39 I would. That's a good point. I would. You don't want a close game where people are really interested in everything you're saying. Yeah. Respectfully. The Isletta New Mexico Bowl. Interestingly enough, they've invited potentially New Mexico.
Starting point is 00:10:53 New Mexico against Texas, San Antonio. Focus a lot, Drew, on the home field advantage that the people there of New Mexico have. You're already a pro. Yeah. And by the way, there's a new bowl, Shannon, the Snoop Dog Bowl. Oh, I like that one. Yeah. I don't care who is playing.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Tucson, Arizona, Ohio San Jose State. That's the one you got to get. You can bring him on the air? Bring him on the air? I bet he would be on the air. That would be cool. Yes. You get to have Snoop while you do it?
Starting point is 00:11:18 They're not sending you into that one. You don't think I get the Snoop Dog Bowl. No, you're not that high on the pecking order yet. Man, you guys are not there. You'll get there. You'll get there. All right, the Boise, Idaho. There's also a Boise, Ohio, Miami of Ohio and Georgia Southern.
Starting point is 00:11:32 But anyway, so Kentucky's not going to go to any of these polls, by the way. I did see, I thought this was nice. You know, for five-win teams, if they don't fill all the bowl games with six-win teams, they rank the five-win teams by academic rating. Okay. That's how you feel it. So I was looking to see where we are on the academic rating. chart because they're going to end up taking a few five-win teams.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Okay. And I was like, wow, maybe we'll get to go to a bowl anyway. I don't think people would be very excited, but maybe we will. You don't have to worry about that. We're not a contender. We are not in the top 15, Drew, on academic rating. But the semester's not over. We're back half the semester.
Starting point is 00:12:20 That's right. We're a late second half of Riley. So I was thinking, you know, who knows? maybe we rise the academic rating chart. Turns out this has been a disappointing season, Drew, in the academic rating chart as well. So are we more likely to overcome Texas in Louisville to get a sixth win or more likely to pass a few quizzes?
Starting point is 00:12:39 I think looking at the academic rating chart, we need to beat Texas. Good to know. I think there's a better chance of winning at Texas than rising as far as we need to rise on the academic rating chart. For our pregame show listeners, it might be time to put Miles Butler back on the team. Hope that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:55 James Butler was on the pregame show. He said that he got a scholarship his last year, but they told him, we're giving you this scholarship, but you have to get a 4-0. Because for the academic, for the grade point out. Yeah. They were like, you only can have this scholarship if you give 4.0. We need you. That's a lot of pressure, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Don't you think you got to make the kicks and get a 4-0? That is a lot of pressure. And I really only know this guy exists because I slapped it. him down in Nashville. You did slap him in the face. Every time you mentioned his name, that's the only thing I can remember is me slapping him one night in Nashville. Let's just leave it without any context. Just say you slapped him in the face.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Cutter Bowley, what did you think of him in the second half? He showed some promise. You know, the guy's got a cannon of an arm, able to, you know, escape the pocket roll out, made some decent passes. If he's our quarterback for the future, I think they can work with him and build on that. I'm spending a lot of money to go to Texas, so I feel like I get a vote on this. I want cutter-bole to be my quarterback while I'm sitting in the nosebleed in that stupid stadium. You would start it. Brock underthrowing those two balls right away was pretty concerning.
Starting point is 00:14:03 I know it might just be lingering from something he has going on. I don't know, but that was a pretty rough start to the Murray game, even though one bounced into Jose Cansecoe backwards for a touchdown. Good to me. That was concerning. And I'm just ready. Just see what you have with cutter. I know it's a tough spot to put him in and a road game like that against the third team.
Starting point is 00:14:20 But whatever. He looked calm enough when he came in. I wouldn't do that. I think that would be a bad mistake. I think you, first of all, with his offense line, you could get him hurt. But I think there's also, like, I don't know that at Texas is where you start a guy's career. But the other thing is, I think you have to ask yourself, who gives us the best chance to beat Louisville? Because I actually think beating Louisville, even if it's not for a bowl, still matters, right? I think it still matters to our fans. I think it still matters. Like, we want to still have that over them for recruiting and other things.
Starting point is 00:14:52 They're getable still. So to me, you're going to start the quarterback who can give you the best chance to win, and I still think that's Brock Vandergriff today. Yeah, I'm with you. That's our ball game. That's the big game in the year for this football team way it's gone. And I think Brock does give you the best chance to win that game, even though, like Drew said, he didn't play his best against Murray State.
Starting point is 00:15:14 But after those two throws, which I will grant you, were awful. Yeah. Both of those throws, I mean, he didn't just underthrew him. He underthrew him by like 20 yards. So I will grant you, those were both terrible throws. But after that, he was fine. He got a little better. Yeah, I mean, it was fine.
Starting point is 00:15:31 But it could have easily been two interceptions to start the game. Could have, but one of them, you know, they just look shamed to see if it was a touchdown. And that one, yes, it bounced, but did he score? Right in the hands. Touchdown. I mean, honestly, in the bread basket. That's true. He laid it right where you were supposed to.
Starting point is 00:15:45 They can't make the catch. Did he call a shot? I'm going to leave this a little short and bank it off. Murray State's quarterback. I was a little concerned about the offensive line. Murray is 122nd out of 123 teams in pressuring the quarterback in 1-A-A or whatever we call it. And they got to the quarterback a lot early.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Yeah, they did. And that was concerning to me. Actually, that was very concerning to me. Now, it got better, but, you know, I mean, a team that was pressuring no one got to our SEC offensive line early. They sacked three times. Three times. Three sats.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Two of them, he had no chance. So the issues we've had with the offensive line, the fact that they glare or a glaring weakness against the team like Murray State just kind of tells you where this team has been all year. A lot of the struggles they've had all year goes right back to that offensive line. 859-280-2287. The text machine is 772-745-25-4. We'll talk more about the football if you want.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I'm going to switch to some basketball because that's honestly what people are excited about I got to make fun of how Louisville lost. If you listen to Postgame show, I got to call it live on the air, maybe the highlight of the weekend. We'll talk about it. That's next here on KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Starting point is 00:17:20 Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. Starting point is 00:17:57 And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:18:36 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin
Starting point is 00:19:11 and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke.
Starting point is 00:19:28 The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like, being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning.
Starting point is 00:19:48 It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extreme,
Starting point is 00:20:15 ordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant, this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tegi Sports Radio, here at KS Bar and Grill. You're welcome to come out and see us, have a little lunch. We had a good weekend at the sport. I was surprised how big the crowd was not just here, although it was good here, but at the game. I mean, now by the end, it was empty, But at the start of the game, they had drew a better crowd than I thought was going to be there.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Yeah, when I walked through right after leaving the pregame show, the parking lot was terrible. I thought no one is going to be here. I couldn't even find a tailgate to stop and see people. It was like empty. But then in that hour before the game, it's like everybody filed in it once and it ended up being a pretty good crowd. It was definitely a late arriving crowd. It was a late arriving crowd here. When we started the pregame show, there weren't many people.
Starting point is 00:22:12 But by the end, it was full. And then, you know, we had people all day. I think I want to first make fun of Louisville and then switch to basketball. Okay, I'm telling you, if you want to hear unadulterated glee, go listen to my postgame call, postgame show call of the Louisville loss, because it was so unexpected. They were up 17 with like nine minutes to go.
Starting point is 00:22:38 And then I checked, and all of a sudden I saw they were up seven and Stanford had the ball, right? So I'm like, I got to turn that on. the Stanford, there was no one at that game. I mean, literally no one. There must have been like a science fair or something. There was no one at that game. And Stanford is driving down.
Starting point is 00:22:57 They get a couple big plays. They score, they tie the game. Now, I'm on the radio saying, you got to go for two. There's like 30 seconds left. You got to go for two. Just go for two. Like you all are two and seven. Go for two.
Starting point is 00:23:09 They kick the extra point. Yep. Louis gets the ball. I can understand Jeff Brom thinking and they've got time to get a field goal. But Stanford, you know that Stanford defense, Drew. You can't just slice through that Stanford defense. No, not in Palo Alto.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Like they used to say about Lindkamp. You can't shut out Lynn Camp. You can't just slice through that Stanford defense. So Stanford, it's Louisville. It's fourth and ten, but it's also 11 seconds. And so, again, I say, Drew, they need a common sense person on the sidelines. I was sitting there, and I know nothing about football. I was thinking, all right, you might as well go for it,
Starting point is 00:23:48 but you need to make sure you use all 11 seconds, right? Yeah. If you're going to throw to the end zone, you better use all 11 seconds because if you don't, they get the ball. Instead, he throws a relatively quick pass. What are you doing? What are you doing, Jeff Brom? So you give Stanford the ball at the 45-yard line.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Okay, 11 seconds, or now five seconds. Stanford probably thinks just don't do anything stupid because they don't have the arm, they said the quarterback couldn't throw it that far. So he throws a little short pass. Drew, they're basically giving up, right? If you throw that pass, they're giving up. They throw the pass.
Starting point is 00:24:27 He goes out of bounds. And for reasons that I do not understand, Shannon, the Louisville player decides to become Kurt Engel and put the guy in the ankle lock. I was trying to figure out, what are you doing in that moment? What are you doing? Yeah. Was there a fight before then?
Starting point is 00:24:44 I have no idea. So he puts him in the ankle lock trying to get him to tap. They call a penalty. Not surprisingly. One second left in the game. So now you're like, what a, you know, what a ridiculous thing. But he has a 57-yard field goal. Now the dude's career along, Ryan, was 48.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Oh, my. So you're like, well, there's no way. He's not even going to get it there. Louisville's got to be thinking, let this dude. Yep. screw this up. Instead, off sides. Offsides, like way off sides. Was it the same dude that twisted the ankle to him?
Starting point is 00:25:19 I think it's a different dude. Okay. So now they go from 57 to 52. He kicks it, it gets over the bar by a millimeter, which means he wouldn't have made it from 57. Yeah. They win. I go nuts. You did.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Just because I couldn't believe it. And Jeff Brom walks off. and Louisville basically guarantees themselves a disappointing season. I think it's one of the worst collapses of a loss, Drew, I maybe have ever seen. I agree. I mean, I love it because it was Louisville, but that's maybe the worst way I've ever seen someone lose a football game. Because it's one thing to have it with 20 seconds and you have the ball and you're on that side of the field, then you turn it over, you fumble a mistake.
Starting point is 00:26:01 But this was just dumb move, dumb move, dumb move. At any moment, they had a chance to just stop being dumb and it would have gone to overtime. You're exactly right. They just kept piling up. There were like five moments, Ryan, that if you just didn't do something really stupid, you would have won the game. And they were like, what's the stupidest thing we could do? Like, why?
Starting point is 00:26:18 Let's try to make this guy tap out on the sideline. It was an unbelievable. We all enjoy good Kentucky laws. But listening you live on the radio was like you were like a little kid at Christmas. It was like an early Christmas present you got. I will freely acknowledge. I get joy out of watching. A lot of joy.
Starting point is 00:26:36 And maybe that makes, maybe that makes me a bad person. No. I mean, maybe it does. But I get joy out of watching their defeats. And I think it's just like, Jeff Brum doesn't seem like a bad dude. I like his brother a lot. But there's just something about the way. I think it's because they always go, we're back, baby.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Rove a football team he won those games. Now we got the Brahms together. It's all coming together. We'll go get you now. Kentucky, we're going to get you. And, like, the fact they do all that, and then they blow the game at Stanford, Drew, I just think it makes me very happy. Mario, do you get that? Those are some of his most animated facial expressions I've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Make sure you post that, Mario. I'm with you, though, all their failures. They keep finding new ways to fail. That's why it's not like we're seeing the same movie over and over. It gets tiring. They keep doing new releases of failure that we get excited to see. I mean, it was almost like they – the only way they could have done it worse, is if Jeff Brom hired Katina Powell in between the plays
Starting point is 00:27:41 so that she could get them in trouble in between the plays for another 15-yard penalty. It was amazing. Against a bad Stanford team. Oh, a horrible Stanford team. And nobody in the stadium. Yeah, it's not like the crowd mattered. You could, in the broadcast, you could hear individual fans going,
Starting point is 00:28:00 wow, that was stupid. And then they got to deal with they're getting dunked on with, like, there was a meme, like, Cardinal better than Cardinals. Yeah. the ass out of here. It's like you have Stanford Athletics mocking you on the internet. I also saw somebody, one of their fans had tweeted out Louisville postgame party
Starting point is 00:28:14 at a place in Palo Alto. Shannon, wouldn't you have loved to have gone to that? Oh, yeah. That had to be a happy postgame party, don't you think? Yeah, what do you think they're going to be doing at that party? I don't know, but it had to have been great. So I did enjoy it. Louisville, I'm not going to lie to you. I did
Starting point is 00:28:30 get some enjoyment out of watching. You got a lot of enjoyment out of it. In the end of that game. Moose up first. Let's go to Sherman. Servant. How are you serving? I'm doing well, sir. I did not know you all had a ghost guest host in Roscoe P. Coltrane today, but I happy to be
Starting point is 00:28:47 calling in on that. Yeah. That's right. I was at the football game Saturday. I've got season tickets and just want to talk about a great American hero. John Short saw him there and he looked good health and it was good seeing you there, John, Katz by 90. It was.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Talking with people around me. Yes, I'm glad you heard. God you got to see. Talk with people around me. We all identify that it's the O-line issues that are causing our ebb in the season. But could we discuss what our defense looks like next year? Because we're losing a majority of our front seven. Yeah, completely new.
Starting point is 00:29:30 The defense next year, I appreciate the call. This, I mean, it has to worry a little bit. It's going to be completely new, Drew. It's going to be a lot of young guys, a lot of guys that have played spot minutes this year. The secondary has actually gotten a lot of experience due to injuries this year, but the front seven is going to be a completely new group of dudes next year. Yeah, you got to assume Dion's moving on. Actually, this year, just we learned Saturday, Derek Jackson's out for the rest of the year.
Starting point is 00:29:54 That's kind of been the captain of your defense. Nobody saw that coming, but then even around the pieces moving on. There's some youth you like, but they haven't played much football. Yeah. You're at least going to have a secondary that's experienced. But the front seven, that's going to have to be some portal pickups and young guys stepping up. We'll take a break. Talk some basketball.
Starting point is 00:30:12 Right for this, KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Let's talk some basketball for a second. Enough being sad about football.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Last night, they released the video of the, like, UK Duke Journey. I enjoy those. This one was 14 minutes long. Maybe a turnaround a little quicker. I mean, it was like five days later, but you know what? It was worth it because you got to see, you know, highlight breakdown. But I think the story of the video, if you haven't watched it, and you need to watch it. It's on KSR. You should go watch it.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Great, great video that UK has produced. But the story is always drew the behind the scenes, right? It's always what you see Mark Pope and the coaches do. The thing that everybody's going to. take from it is both at half time and then at the last time out he says when cooper flag gets a ball in the middle of the paint he's going to spin let's rip it out of his hands and of course that's what ends up exactly what happened now what i loved about it is he you know i've been watching basketball a long time and i'm sure mark pope's not the first person to say this but he's the first person that i think
Starting point is 00:31:29 i've heard say it he said reach in with two hands and grab the ball because they're less likely to call a foul if you do two hands than if you slap at it with one hand. First of all, that's probably correct. And I'd never really thought of it like that. O.A still used one hand. But you know what? It worked because he gets the steel. But he coached them at halftime and said that.
Starting point is 00:31:55 And then he says it on the play right before Flagg does it. It's just so cool to see a coach make, like say something and then watch it come to be in the game. It's that preparation. He knew the movie was going to make. And I assume through going to his referee symposiums, he knew which way that they needed to play it. He even says like kind of get your whole, like lean into it, get your whole body in there, which O-Wa does,
Starting point is 00:32:18 even though he uses one hand. He took half of his advice. But that and that half-time when he's, he keeps saying, use your championship chest. Championship chest. What does that mean? He was saying, build your wall because I guess they were penetrating a lot. And I guess he's kind of bulk up.
Starting point is 00:32:32 Don't let it. I think. I don't know. Championship chest. But I was always. on the couch flexing my own chest. I had pulled it up on my phone, just like I would normally watch it off Twitter. When I saw it was 15 minutes, it's like, oh, no, we're sitting down on the couch and put it on
Starting point is 00:32:45 the TV. Oh, you put it on the TV? Oh, it was a big cinematic reveal at the house. I watched it twice back to back. It was so exciting. Those things are so detailed anyway. Now that we have Pope, we're going to learn so much about just what their game planning was and all these games.
Starting point is 00:32:59 He just is so prepared. I mean, he broke down. He probably did the same thing for Bucknell. He did it for Duke and he knew the game plan. He knew their game plan. He knew what to do. And the players listen. Our basketball IQ on this team is very high.
Starting point is 00:33:13 And call on the spin. Yeah. Like that you have to have done your research to call the spin. Like you have to, I mean, have known enough to say when he makes that move, he is likely to spin. And it happens in the perfect, perfect moment. It's the preparation we're going to learn through all of these. Heck, just his regular press conferences and his postgame with Tom Leach to the night. We're learning so much that we never really learned before about what they're actually planning on going into any of these games, what they're changing midgame.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Even at halftime, he was talking about, like, we're getting killed in transition. We have to adjust in transition. Everything was not so much just fight, go, play hard. It was very specific of what they need to fix. So where do you think we'll be ranked today? The rankings will come out right after this show. They'll probably be out like 1 o'clock, something like that. Where do you think we'll be ranked?
Starting point is 00:34:05 I'm going to say, I think we should be like 8 or 9. They better put us ahead of Duke. Let me just say. I hate when they do that. When you beat a team and then they're ahead of you in the ranking, they better put us ahead of Duke. But I'm going to say 8, 9, something like that. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:34:20 I think they're definitely a top 10 team. I was going to say 10 or 11. So, I mean, we're in the same ballpark there. How much they're going to jump today? I think they'll correct top 10 barely. I'll say 9th. CBS had them 11th already in ESPN 8th, so it's kind of shows you some. Yeah, I mean, we should be.
Starting point is 00:34:35 It should matter who you've played early in the year, right? Alabama lost to Purdue. I watched that game. I had a pretty big wager on Alabama, so I was bummed. Alabama was up seven, and in two minutes went from up seven to down seven, and ended up losing the game. With Clemson, who we play, lost by 12 to Boise State. I saw that.
Starting point is 00:34:57 I still think that game's going to be hard, just because it's in their arena. But that was kind of a little bit of a surprise to see Boise State not just win, but win by a decent amount. That game at Clemson, I mean, they're used to Duke and North Carolina coming in every other year at the conference. Kentucky doesn't come there. That place will be crazy because Kentucky's coming in there on Tuesday night.
Starting point is 00:35:17 Yeah, so. Ohio State got killed. What you say? Ohio State, well, they played A&M, but they lost by 14 or 15. Yeah, A&M kind of handled them. Obviously, we will play both of those teams. Did you see Shannon? and I thought you would like St. John's played New Mexico, which is Old Rick Petino versus Little Rick Petino.
Starting point is 00:35:34 And Old Rick Petino won by 16 points. And at the end, the student section chanted, Who's your daddy to Richard Petino? Did you like that? I loved it. I don't think Rick Petino liked it based on his reaction. He tried to get him to be quiet, but I thought it was funny. Yeah, it was good stuff. I mean, I think we can look forward to seeing that probably every year. I think they're probably going to schedule that game each season. You think who's your daddy? Is that okay to change? Yeah. I would have been out.
Starting point is 00:35:58 there doing the same thing me too you know it's nothing to you know nasty it is his dad yeah not like like he could have said he is my daddy it's on the birth certificate it's the easiest taunting sports saw smith heard it brad caliperi heard it we've done it to other people it's it's what you do when you got a father's son combination like that so uh i thought it was great and uh rupertino's team might be pretty good actually four no i think right now four and oh to start the season and that was a good win for him. Who's up next? Bluegrass. Bluegrass. How are you? I'm doing pretty good, Matt. I'll tell you what, man. The whole nation is getting behind Kentucky now, isn't it? Not just eastern Kentucky. I think the world's sort of hearing what we're shouting, aren't they?
Starting point is 00:36:42 I'll tell you, I think this is, from my perspective, this is just my perspective since the bar has been open. So since 2018, this is the most excited I've seen the basketball fan base. Now, the football fan base has had some moments of major excitement since then. But I think, I mean, I think you have to go back to Fox Monk Bam to see a team that fans are this excited about. Now, last year, as Reed started playing, fans got excited, but there was still a sense of dread of like what's going to happen. And there was complaining about them coming off the bitch. This is like the most kind of excitement, just sheer excitement I've seen since that 17 group. but what a breath of fresh air.
Starting point is 00:37:26 I mean, he involves BBN. Like, he actually doesn't believe that this team is playing for us, and it makes us feel that way. He's so genuine. And I think that's what everybody is starting to figure out about him. I completely agree. Appreciate the call, Ryan. I mean, I feel like he, I mean, we can say over and over and over.
Starting point is 00:37:47 He gets us. I think that's certainly true. But I think he's also, whether these guys were naturally predisposed to him, it or he's been able to sell it to them. They do seem to have like a pride of wearing the uniform. You know, for all the talk about, oh, NIL, nobody's going to care. They're coming in for money, et cetera. This group, at least, certainly doesn't seem to be like that.
Starting point is 00:38:09 This may end up being, even though they don't have the stars, his best recruiting class because he had to go out, you know, at the last minute and piece together, guys, but he got him to fit the system that understood what was going to mean to put that jersey on. We may look back to what he did. this class putting these guys together as a superior job. I think, you know, talent-wise, maybe there would be a couple players, who knows have been better, worse, whatever. But, like, from a character standpoint, I don't know how you can't like any of these guys.
Starting point is 00:38:39 I mean, Kerr is obviously the one that pushes the envelope, but it seems like kind of in a likable way, right? Yeah, and the team stuff and playing for the front isn't just some catchy slogan. They're all saying, I thought in that journey video, you could really see it, just lifting each other up, pat each other on the back. It even looked more like what kind of looked like at the end of the game, watching it. Jackson Robinson didn't play well, wasn't slouching or disappearing. He was trying to pick it up in other areas and was still encouraging to his teammates when his shot wasn't falling.
Starting point is 00:39:06 And it's easy to forget the second flag turnover. It was Jackson Robinson when he stepped on the in line. That was Jackson Robinson right there. Yeah, you just, it's not like they're just saying it in press conferences because they know that's the message Pope wants to get across. You can actually see him living it in all these things we can. to see. It's, you know, you bring in 11 guys, none of whom know each other. Right. And you put them together. That could go a lot of different ways. I mean, that could go, that could be terrible if you're not careful. And it's worked out. And I think part of it may be that they didn't know each other,
Starting point is 00:39:41 meaning like there wasn't like a click you had to fit into. It was like, well, we're all in this together. We might as well jump into the pool. Yeah. And I think our fan base is doing that too. You know, I think our fan base for the last several years we're kind of almost a little afraid to go all in because we're afraid we're going to get hurt again. Well, I think now we're all in. That's what I think that's definitely true. I think that's definitely true.
Starting point is 00:40:04 And I mean, probably the only two people that knew each other when this started were Perry and Noah. Probably the other guys, they might not have known each other at all, to be honest with you. We got Drexel, San Diego State. Yeah, I mean, I don't know how a lot of them. They wouldn't have played each other. Maybe the kid from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Starting point is 00:40:21 knew each other, but that would have probably been it. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?

It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you,
Starting point is 00:43:14 but don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. an Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness.
Starting point is 00:44:04 So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin, this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know.
Starting point is 00:44:39 Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Starting point is 00:45:12 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287 going over the events of the weekend. Our teams are so sad, Drew. The Bears. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:36 Titans, poor Bengals. Everybody's so sad. The Bears. Who did they play, Shannon? Yeah, the Packers. Not all of the lists are sad. I knew we were going to lose, by the way. I knew, as we set up for that field goal, I knew we were losing.
Starting point is 00:45:50 And Cairo Santos rarely misses, but I was like, something's going to happen. You know, the snap will be bad. The long snapper will fall down. The kicker will be arrested. Like, I do, like something was going to happen. And then, of course, they block it. Second game that's ended on a block in the last two weeks with the Chiefs Broncos last time. We've lost the Packers now 11 straight.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Is that what it is? 11 straight times. Wow. They got a fire Eber Flues, first of all. Got to get rid of him. He stinks. Caleb looked good. He did look good.
Starting point is 00:46:26 He did. But, you know, now, apparently you guys did commit a penalty, which I, on that play that wasn't called, which I think was cheating of you, Shannon. But otherwise, pretty, another frustrating Bears. Well, let's talk about the penalty on the Bears. They had 12 men on the field, and the Packers still scored on that play. That was bad. We had 12 minutes on the field, and it wasn't the 12th man running off the field.
Starting point is 00:46:49 The 12th man was participating in the play, and the Packers still scored. And they were wide open, Drew, even though we had 12 men on. Maybe we needed 13. Yeah, football has not been kind this year to a lot of us. Congrats to Shannon. But Bengals fans, Titans fans, Bears fans. I'm living my first ever tank. I've never been on a team that I went to tank before.
Starting point is 00:47:09 So it's weird, actively rooting against my own team. But that's where I am right now. But Will Levis set a record. The longest touchdown throw by Kentucky quarterback ever in history, 98 yards. He's actually looking a little better. I don't know if he's the answer for the future, but since he's come back from injury, he's had two pretty good games. Titans got hosed pretty bad on a fourth down call in the end zone that allowed the Vikings to score.
Starting point is 00:47:33 But other than that, you know, we just suck and I'm living with it. And then the Cincinnati Bengals, Ryan, they're not my team, but I kind of pulled for them because we have local fans here, et cetera. last night, Evan McPherson, who's been so good for them, misses two field goals, but one that would basically have won the game, and he missed it, you know, not good. See, I'm kind of like you got kind of pulled for the Bengals now. They made a heck of a comeback.
Starting point is 00:47:57 They were down a couple touchdown. Three, they were down 27-6. And came back to tie it up, and I thought he's automatic. He's automatic Evan. When he walked out, he's going to hit it. Is that his nickname? Yeah. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:48:07 Automatic Evan. Well, it doesn't work anymore. No, it doesn't work anymore. What about Ray Day? Davis, Thurman Thomas showed up wearing a Ray Davis jersey to the Bill's game. That's pretty cool. Ray Davis. Legend rocking your jersey.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Chiefs lost. So, you know, they needed to lose one. Like, they're still going to end up being the one seed. Sure. They're going to be fine. But they needed to lose once. They didn't have that baggage. Good game, though.
Starting point is 00:48:29 I thought Tony Romo, who I thought did a good job. He'd be like, you know, this was, that was Tony at his best where he was like calling the plays and you knew it was going to happen. I thought that Buffalo, the crowd and the environment. for a game like that is cool. Yeah, I liked Josh Allen running to go back up by two possessions. That's a great play. He of all people know, I ain't giving it to my homes.
Starting point is 00:48:50 I've seen this too many times. I am making sure. That was a gutsy call. It was fourth and two. You kick a field goal there. You're making my home score a touchdown. And if they don't get it, you're giving them the ball. They'll get the field goal.
Starting point is 00:49:03 I mean, if you don't get that, they're only 25 yards from the winning field goal. Go for, goes for it. And then what a run. That was a great play. I mean, that's probably his play that wins him the MVP, right? I didn't think about that. You're probably right. That'll be the one that everybody remembers, for sure.
Starting point is 00:49:18 Can I mention one more NFL thing when we're talking to NFL? If you want to? Denver Broncos upset the Falcons and Devin Key starting at safety the last couple of games. The Broncos have turned it around until he started starting. Oh, you're giving him the credit for it? 100% the credit. Not Bo Nix playing really well as Devin Key at safety? Devin Key starting at safety has made the Broncos turn around.
Starting point is 00:49:35 You think they give them that credit too? You can on your NFL show with Tyron. I'll try to bring it up on, on, on, on Sundays. UK women get a big win against Louisville. First time beating Louisville since 2015. Sold out historic Davis Arena. Absolutely, you know, going wild. Kenny Brooks said one of the best atmospheres of his life,
Starting point is 00:49:59 maybe even better than the atmosphere he's had when Virginia Tech went on its run. I watched most of the game, but then all the second half in the overtime. You know, that Kentucky defense is so good. Yeah. And got the victory. It was awesome. Yeah, I actually thought that the third quarter of the football game was going to run through the women's basketball game and ruin that crowd. But we were able to get home and catch the double header. At the end, when Deja Lawrence missed two free throws, I thought, do not let it in like that. She's played so good this year and those were two bad misses, but they held on in one in overtime.
Starting point is 00:50:35 Finally, end in that drought, big win. And they're back tonight. They're playing in tonight against Fort Wayne. Purdue, Fort Wayne. So that's on the computer if you want to watch tonight. And that's here at Memorial. Not just had a big crowd, though, Ryan, we're loud. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:50:51 It was a crowd that was into it and a great atmosphere. I think that's part of what the renovations to Memorial have done have made it a more cozy kind of like atmosphere that can get loud. You know, that's when beating Louisville and what, like 11? 10 years. 10 years. And to beat them, this is a really good team. I mean, this is a team that can make a big run.
Starting point is 00:51:11 in the postseason. So I think the environment shows that there's going to be a lot of support for this team as they move out throughout the season. I think I hope people now, those first couple of games, the attendance wasn't great. Now, they didn't do them any favors by having to play the same night as the UK men's team. At one point they played at five o'clock. Like, that's not really a great. But then you started to see, and by the way, he got another commitment from a top 20 player. And it was a commitment from what Myron told me this, the commitment we got. got on Friday was from a girl whose mom and dad both played at Iowa. And they had sold her as being like the next Caitlin Clark. And she turned down the place where both of her parents played
Starting point is 00:51:54 to instead come to Kentucky. Her dad's a was a famous Minnesota Viking played there several years. Chad Greenway and linebacker. Her name's Maddie Greenway. Mad, something like that. Big Madden. I don't get the pronunciation right. But yeah, big get. He had two commitments there and then Louisville had bryson tiller in the house they were getting celebrities over there the whole basketball team was there which I thought was really cool so great night for UK women's team
Starting point is 00:52:21 on Saturday who's up next Ed Ed go ahead Ed Hey Matt two questions and a comment question one who starts at Texas and question two would be you know what
Starting point is 00:52:39 let's just skip that one Okay, just do the part of right. And the comment was, man, how wonderful is it when you watch basketball now? And I don't have to scream at TV to say Cal Perry, do something different. So great to have to be a basketball fan. I appreciate the call. I would say, I mean, I don't see any reason not to assume that Brock will be the starter, don't you? I think you got to go down there with the intent to try to win the game and play your best player,
Starting point is 00:53:10 and he gives you the best chance, I think, to win the game. But Drew wants to start, I'm Tim Cutter. I'm Team Cutter. I'll be up at the top of 108, hanging from the light post in that stadium, screaming Bowley's name. I will say, I mean, now I think if he doesn't, but you also have, I mean, don't forget you have Gavin there, too, which he was, they were sitting him out this week just to get him healthy for these last two games.
Starting point is 00:53:31 Look, if we were playing Texas and Georgia, I might say, let's just go with Cutter. But we got, we can beat Louisville. they think we're going to beat them now. Like they've lost their confidence. So because of that, I want us to have a chance to actually go and beat them. And I want to put the guy, Brian, who I think has the best chance of doing it. And in the big games this year, Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee, Brock has played fairly decent. He has played well in those games.
Starting point is 00:53:59 That's true. All right, we're going to take a break, and we're going to come back. Hour number two here at KSmar. We are now open. Come see us, and we'll be right back.
