Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Life is full of hurdles. So how do you keep going? Starting point is 00:03:04 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio. Monday, January the 13th. I have Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill. It is a post-victory show with you. You can give us a shout to Clark's Pumpment Shop. Phone line 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:03:29 A Vision Auto Glass text machine 772-744. This edition spots are by the T.J. Smith Law Office, you call T.J. I'll make them pay. So here's the deal today. At 11 o'clock, Willie Collie Stein is going to come join us, and he will be in here to sort of talk. I think we're just going to talk everything. He was here at this bar Saturday night watching the game,
Starting point is 00:03:49 so we'll talk to him about what he thinks about the team. But also, maybe Drew, the best storyteller. I mean, probably he and DeMarcus, you think are the best storytellers, of the Cal era in terms of having players? Yeah, not because they're good storytellers, just because they don't care to save anything. They'll say it. They'll let it fly.
Starting point is 00:04:07 They're not going to hide anything. They'll be the most open. Doron and Marcus Teague were pretty open. But I think Willie will even take it to another level. We had Willie this summer when you were gone, and I asked him, can we talk about the Bahamas? And he said, yes, it was the day we had so many people. We only got a couple minutes with them,
Starting point is 00:04:22 and we didn't get much out of them. So we know he's willing to go there if you want to. He's one of those guys that, you know, we'll have him on for a segment. We could have a whole show with a guy like that. Why are we just having him on for a second? I'm just making a point. He could just do you.
Starting point is 00:04:34 No, we're going to have him on more than a segment. If he will stay, I assume he will. So he's in town. He was here watching the game Saturday. Looking forward to that. We also have new headsets. So if you're listening and we sound differently, it's because they tell me, Ryan,
Starting point is 00:04:50 these are state-of-the-art headsets. Yours, your two earpieces are actually attached. For the first time in a month and I have. Mine looked like a couple of, Well, mice had been eating on it for a couple years. Drew's. Drew actually had the best of all of us, but we actually have a fourth set. Like, Willie's even going to have a new headset.
Starting point is 00:05:07 When he comes into doing this. What do you have mice eating on? Mine was all chewed up, like the microphone cover was chewed up. The head phone covers were all chewed up. I really liked leaving the show and being out in public and people would be like, you have like black foam all over your ear. It's like, yeah, it's our crappy headsets that would just leave a trail of radio. Well, we have new ones.
Starting point is 00:05:24 I was told they were here for two and a half weeks and no one brought them here. So, but luckily we got them and now we're ready to go. And what a great day. Like Katz beat Mississippi State on Saturday night. Awesome win on the road. It's our fourth victory over a team that at the time was in the top 12 of the net. Gets Kentucky to two and one in the SEC. Part of, you know, maybe the separation of the SEC a little bit.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Five teams went on the road and they might be the five best teams in the conference. Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and us all went on the road and beat a good team on the road. And I think you could kind of see there. I haven't been a lot of road wins. That might be the sort of first step in, okay, here are your best teams. But when it comes to Kentucky, tough game, got a big lead, gave it up, fell behind, hit the shots to come back and win. I thought it was a great gutsy test for this group. Jackson Robinson broke out.
Starting point is 00:06:27 My guy Ansley-Oleanor who Mario just trashed before the season started, but I took up for it because I saw something from him, hit three big threes, and Ryan, we get the victory. Man, what a great game. You know, both teams played a really high level, man, and I think when most of us thought the game would be in the 70s, I think Jack Givens even said the 60s, 95-90. I mean, it was just a fun game to watch, shot the ball extremely well, but I think if you told me that Kobe Bray was only going to go one of five for threes, I'd have thought, oh, we're in. in trouble. Didn't realize that Jackson Robinson was just going to hit everything he threw up in the game. Well, I mean, Jackson Robinson, you know, we needed that game from him. I mean, that's, you know, I feel like I was like a lone voice in the woods. Think about how many people have called this show and said, Matt, why do you keep saying Jackson Robinson has to be our best player? That's why. Yep.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Because if we don't have that, it will be very hard to win. Because, you know, let's be honest, until the second half, I mean, Jackson Robinson was the only one making shots for most of the game. Now, Butler hit some big ones, obviously, Almanor, but we're not in that game in the first half without Jackson Robinson. We're down 12 again at halftime. He really was huge. Yeah, and my favorite part with that is it didn't take him long. Kentucky still had a slow-ish start, I guess. They went down 5-0, like 11-5. It wasn't the slow starts of Duke and Clemson where it didn't look like they belonged out there. But Robinson didn't waste any time finding his shot.
Starting point is 00:07:52 We knew within minutes that he packed his stuff for Starkville. And it's just good moving forward. We knew he had done it at BYU. I even brought up on the pregame show how I watched that game in the fog a year ago. And I'm like, I know he's done it. He did it at BYU. Why can't he do it here? We finally got to see that big 40-minute performance from him.
Starting point is 00:08:08 He was one shy away from eight. There's only eight people in history that have made eight in a game. So it was almost a truly historic performance from him three-point shooting. It was funny. They called time out after his seventh three. I thought Mississippi State, we talked to, about how I thought early in the game Pope went one too many without calling timeout. I thought Mississippi State did that too because they gave him a couple extra ones.
Starting point is 00:08:31 After their seventh one, they called time out, and they clearly switched their defense to Robinson's not going to beat us. And then Kentucky was able to get stuff from other guys at that point. Then you got away going to the basket. Obviously, you had an almanor, a car got a few layups down low. We were able to adjust to their changey. defense and I think that helped. That's exactly why Almanor had those good looks because they were concentrating so much on Jackson Robinson. And Almanor's credit, man, those were three big
Starting point is 00:09:01 threes he hit. They were all pretty crucially hit those. Well, think about the biggest shots, okay? Actually, as great as Robinson played, I don't know that any of his shots were the biggest. I thought the Butler corner three was huge. Big. Oway had a couple of layups where we had to have a basket. The momentum was going against us and he would get down and get a basket. Almanor, we're down two when Almanor hits his first three. And not only down two, they had scored like six or eight in a row. And we were, they were on a run, crowds going crazy. Almanor hits the three.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Carr had a couple layups down low there that were really important. As good as Robinson played, I thought other dudes hit major, major shots. And then on the last possession, Butler was in Hubbard's face. I mean, go watch those 20 seconds of defense because Hubbard was shooting. You can tell no matter what he was shooting. shooting him. Butler made sure Drew he didn't get off an easy shot. It's a championship chest. Saw it again. We knew before the year we'd see this out of Butler and it's great to finally
Starting point is 00:10:00 actually watch it. When Pope said on the radio, I don't lose a minute at sleep a night about guarding SEC guards. He already knew what Lamont Butler was and now we're finally seeing it because Hubbard's about as good as you're going to face in the SEC. He's up there at those scoring guards with Clayton, who will see at A&M tomorrow night if he plays and Lamont Butler did a great job defending him, especially when it mattered. I loved everything about how we played. I love the environment. I mean, Mississippi State was rocking, and they went into that environment and won.
Starting point is 00:10:31 You know, we talked about I consider Gonzaga a road win, but it's a different. It was still like an NBA arena. This was loud college arena, people yelling at you, kids, you know, screaming, t-shirts. They don't do cowbells, but they have the culture of cowbells, like, you know, chaw everywhere. Like, I mean, it was the, that's what you want to. do is go win one there. I think that's what's so impressive to me they went into that environment after they just got beat on the road at Georgia and played at a high level. And you know, you hinted to this about Jackson Robinson. If he hits his first shot or he hits
Starting point is 00:11:03 his second. That seems to like springboard him on. He missed his first one. Missed his first one. And then his second one rattled in. But I think it was huge that it went in. I think it was that was a huge thing for the game. And it was the confidence. There's in the one he missed. He was quick to let it fly. It didn't go in, but we knew that the Georgia game didn't linger. Because you could worried that he would just come out and not even want to shoot he was so bad at Georgia but he got right to it his his comments after the game where he said man after the georgia game i was really in my head you know i felt like a oh oh but then boom look what he did he came out and looked great marie williams had a double double um you know marie is my this
Starting point is 00:11:39 year player of no no no okay okay all right i'm okay with that like they like that's him for me he he he you know but he he drives me crazy with his won't put his hands up but he does He rebounds well sometimes. But he gets big ones. Got a big one there at the end. End up missing the free throw, but that was kind of a game-clinching rebound. And he hustles, and I will say this.
Starting point is 00:12:04 He's a great passer. He's going to make a couple turnovers because he'll try to, like, thread a needle. But when he threads a needle, it's pretty. And he is, for a big man, a very good passer. Even though I yell at him about once a game, he's still my favorite. It's just that his turnovers.
Starting point is 00:12:19 I get like three. Okay, maybe a few more. But it's just that when he does turn it over, it's so bad. It's like, you know, we mentioned trying to be a point guard. Garrison does it too. But when he connects on him, there's not many big men who can run an offense from the top of the key. Garrison hit a three as well. He did.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Travis Perry hit a three. I mean, they did. That's the ball. Well, everybody better brave. He's the only one guy that didn't shoot very well. Didn't know he either. Brea. You think you'll ever get it right?
Starting point is 00:12:43 Probably not. We're about to play the 17th game tomorrow night. Yeah, Braya made one, though. One out of five, yeah. So he made one. And your big shots you're mentioning earlier, even though Perry's was early in the game, Mississippi State was on an early run, and that one shut them up and pulled Kentucky within one or two. He hit the three.
Starting point is 00:13:00 I think that was when they had their biggest lead. It was 11 to 5. I believe, I think maybe did Amari? It was against the shot clock. Amari had to let it fly. Perry got the rebound and then hit the three that cut it to like 11 to 8. So our biggest deficit was when he hit the three. I just an all around great team victory you know there's you've heard me say it's a lot
Starting point is 00:13:26 there's nothing better than winning a game on the road you just get to watch the teams come together there's a picture after the game of them celebrating in the locker room you know it's a big deal when Mitch is double-fisting water ready to like I mean he's doing a stone cold shannon with the water like ready to hit it and drink it may not be beer but he'll still take the water When he got home, he probably did it with milk. That's how excited he was about it. I don't want to bring it one more big shot. The shot Butler hit right before halftime
Starting point is 00:13:56 because Hubbard had kind of stuck it in his eye on that four-point play and was talking smack to him. Butler came down the other day. That tells me he's got a little that dog in him we've been talking about. And I don't know that he had a great game, but still hit a couple big shots and play defense. I actually thought he didn't play well, but hit huge shots, Drew, when it mattered.
Starting point is 00:14:15 Well, as someone who needed him to score 10 points, I can tell you he was one for nine from the field for most of the game and then turned it on late He was doing other things, but the shot was not falling He was trying to take it to the rim and it just wasn't happening He got he got stopped at the rim a number of times and on your Barnhart double fisting point You know I don't know barnhart I'm not around him but I've wondered seeing this photos is anyone having more fun than him No I mean seeing him again in the water shower. He's grinning from ear to ear like a little kid I mean I this was his pick everybody was against it and he has to be be loving every second of this. No, I mean, if you're Mitch Barnhart, you should sit there and feel like,
Starting point is 00:14:52 I mean, he's not going to do middle fingers, but he's going to be pinkies up. Pinkies out on some respect. Because, you know, he's had to deal with Cal. And even when Cal was at his best, his relationship with Mitch was terrible. Their relationship was never good from moment one. So you've got to think of for 14 years every day, he had to deal with someone he did not personally like, right? Then you throw in the fan, I mean, the fans have never loved him. Right? I don't think anybody
Starting point is 00:15:22 hates him, but I don't think like people don't go, you know what I mean? Like, there's not a bond there, even though I think people respect how good he's done the job. I remember ditch Mitchman Brooks was here. Yeah, I mean, there's been a complaint for, he's not a warm and fuzzy. He's a very nice man,
Starting point is 00:15:38 but he's also like not somebody that, you know, you're going to have a beer with, right? Or he's just, that's just, that's just not who he is. Then, you know, he hires this guy and everyone. I mean, if we're honest, outside of like 5% of the people, everybody was like, what? And then he turns it around, right? Everyone embraces it. And now, Pope's rolling. Fans are loving it. The other guy is struggling to say the least. If you're Mitch Barnhart, you do have to be walking around like, yeah, who wants some? And Pope let him be a part of this, right?
Starting point is 00:16:15 He was not a part of the water shower. No, they did not want him in the locker room. I mean, sometimes he would be there, but they didn't, like, a lot of the players of the Cal era were almost, they almost felt zero connection to Mitch. And Mitch is now like, you know, given Kobe Brea tickling even, like, it's just not, it's just a different thing. You know, Mitch has to be feeling good, just not with Pope, but with Kenny Brooks with the women's team, stuck his neck out from Enjillo. Yeah, I mean, we'll talk more about them. they're 15 and 1 or whatever. Stucky's neck out for men's young and baseball and they went to the college world series.
Starting point is 00:16:47 I mean, Mitch is down to be McMahon walking out with a little swag. Mitch is on a heater. If he could just get stooped to get to a bowl, I think he could just like be fine. So good stuff. 859-2-80-2287. Text machine is 772-745-254. We're going to take a break. We're here at KS. Barr.

Starting point is 00:18:26 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant, this went to a billion-dollar fraud.

Starting point is 00:20:07 On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness. professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't
Starting point is 00:20:32 feel like you don't feel like. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ledecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light. up and smile. That means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can, like, I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:21:31 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's Kentucky Sports Radio here at the KS Bar and Grill. 859-280-2287. On the text machine, one person writes, Matt, do you think Pope and staff notice Amari keeps his hands down? Do you think there's an intent to it?
Starting point is 00:21:55 Well, Pope has got this characteristic that I like, which is he takes up for his players when they ask questions. So I don't know how much of what he says is like what he really believes or if he's like taken up for him. But he did say something like, well, you can move quicker with your hands down. I can't imagine, though, he always wants his hands down. But he did, I will say to it, Mark, his hands were down the whole first half, early second. In the second half, towards the end, I did notice on a couple big plays his hands got up,
Starting point is 00:22:23 and I cheered the moment his hands got up, one of which led to a block. I mentioned that on Friday's show. On Pope's calling show last week, I'd never heard someone make the case for not having your arms up. Pope said, guys can go around you. You're more agile when your hands are down. I just thought I've never really heard that explanation. I'm not going to throw the challenge flag, but I'm throwing the challenge flag on that. I don't believe coaches are like, yeah, you're seven feet tall.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Keep your hands down at your waist. I don't think they believe it. I can remember running in Little League basketball for not having my hands up. Yes. It's one of the things you're taught for an early age, especially if you're in the post, a big guy. You've got to get your hands up. I can see it maybe on the perimeter. If you got them out to your side a little bit, maybe help your lateral quickness a little bit.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Yeah, but he even keeps them like at his knees, which I don't get. One person writes, Matt, do you think Mitch Barnhart will do a press conference and give one of cows, do you see what I did there with the hire? No, and this is like, I respect this, but this is part of why I think it's been hard for fans to connect with Mitch is he doesn't really do press conferences. He's never warm and fuzzy. Like he never shows one ounce of like lovable personality. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:23:37 It's all business all the time. And I've heard, like, you watch him with his family. Like I went to a UK tennis match last year and sat with him and his daughter and his daughter's kid just for a few minutes. And watching him with his family, you see a different person than you see, you know, drew on the press conferences or something like that. But he just doesn't show the world that side. Oh, that's somebody that stands next to Mitch in a football or basketball game. You'll know the fire in Barnhart, but on the point of just being public and talking. I'm sitting here trying to think.
Starting point is 00:24:10 I remember the awkward Cal interview, and then he came on the show, but he just doesn't do much, like press conferences or anything like that. I can't even remember. If I were him, I'd have one every week right now just to flex on my two basketball teams. Let me tell you all this something.
Starting point is 00:24:24 If you go to the games, okay, so Mitch stands. He stands over there where I used to, when I did the radio sideline, I stood in that little walkway where the players come out. That was where they had me stand. I was there the 14, 15, and 16 seasons. Pretty good seasons, right? He stands there, too.
Starting point is 00:24:45 He would usually stand behind me, and he would check to make sure the microphone was off a lot. Because let me tell you, you know, he's a man of God, unless we're down three and get a bad call. Then sometimes a different set of things come out. It's been fun to, you watch him, and when he stands there in a corner, Football games are the same way on the sideline.
Starting point is 00:25:09 A lot of times he'll stand in the end zone, and he'll let you know quickly what he's feeling. 859-280-2-82-87. One more person on the text machine writes, Matt, have you signed your contract yet? My wife keeps asking me, and I need to give her an answer. Today is the meeting. They finally gave me the written thing Friday at 8 o'clock,
Starting point is 00:25:29 which is exactly when you want it. And so the meeting is today. So do we have a show tomorrow? I mean, as of this moment, But ask me at 5 o'clock today. I'm driving back to Louisville. Shannon, be at the building there with you for the first time in a while. Does Shannon need to have a best of ready for tomorrow?
Starting point is 00:25:46 She should have a best of just in case. You know, if we do a show tomorrow, which I think we will. Georgia Amor will be here with us tomorrow as well. Nice. She can only be here one segment, so she'll be here at 10.30. She has a class at 11. So about somebody who is just on fire right now. She's had like, what, five or six straight games of over 20?
Starting point is 00:26:06 I mean, she is definitely playing at a super highland. One of the best, maybe one of the top point guards in the country. We also should talk just a second before we go to the phones about the thing that happened after the game with Pope and the guy in the crowd. First of all, if you haven't seen the video, I don't know how you couldn't have. It's been everywhere now. But Pope comes out after the game, talks to the people, the Kentucky fans. What has started happening is that Kentucky fans who go to a road game kind of go gather down next to the course. court after the game to celebrate when they win.
Starting point is 00:26:40 A lot of times they'll kick you out for that. But at least at Gonzaga, they didn't. And now at Mississippi State they didn't. And then Pope comes out and says hi to everybody. He does it before he even goes to the media. So we're talking 10 or 15 minutes after the game, he usually doesn't. I guess he was down there. He saw a young man in a wheelchair that was up on top of the concourse who couldn't get down
Starting point is 00:27:02 because Mississippi State's got an old stadium. you know I don't know if they're ADA compliant or not but he was up there on the concourse I don't know who told him that he walked up there to go meet the guy and then in one of the like I mean you've seen the video one of the nicest things you'll ever see no it is he walked to him sits next to him which people who know people who deal with who are in wheelchairs and who deal with that say one of the nicest things you can do is go sit rather than look down upon sit it's like a little thing Mark does it
Starting point is 00:27:33 And then what I love is Mark talks to him just about being a fan. He's like, wouldn't you become a fan? Oh, wasn't that 2015 team where Willie's here, right? Like, wasn't that a great team? How good was that? You know, just has a conversation with him. A guy in the crowd just films it. Mark doesn't know that's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:27:52 It's not an official UK video. It's just a guy in the crowd. One of the, you know, just a really cool thing. And it's the kind of thing he did so, like, nonchalantly that, right, it makes me think, He does it all the time. It usually doesn't get shown on film. And it's, it was perfect to watch because it wasn't just, it seemed genuine. I mean, too, he made the media weight, the radio audience weight.
Starting point is 00:28:18 He set with this guy. And I just, I thought it was awesome. I agree with everything you just said, 100% genuine. Just his natural reaction was he wanted to go talk to this fan that was up there at the top and couldn't get down to everybody else. And I'm glad you talked to him pulling out the chair. didn't just talk to the guy. Just say, hey, how you doing?
Starting point is 00:28:34 Want a picture? Pulled the chair out and sat by time and talked to him for a number of minutes. That just tells you what kind of person, Mark Pope is. It's obvious when you think about it, but I had never really thought about it. There's a guy in my fellowship, you know, Aspen Institute thing that's in a wheelchair. We were going to go see him in South Dakota. And I said we and I were talking once, and he said, you know, it's a little thing. He was like, I don't get mad when people don't.
Starting point is 00:29:01 But when people sit next to you, it's just that you put each other on the same level. And that had never clicked to me in my life. Maybe it should have, but it just never had. It clearly clicked to Mark Pope because he did it naturally, and I thought it was really nice. If he had just gone up there, giving him a fist bump and kept walking, I think that still might have been the nicest thing that coach ever did. To go out of the way to someone who couldn't make it down, if he had just done a photo, we'd be talking about how nice that was.
Starting point is 00:29:28 But to pull up a chair and have a conversation, knowing you've got a plane on the tarmac. You probably can't wait to get home. Your players, staff, everybody wants to get home. You still have more obligations in that arena, and you don't make that a brief interaction. You've made that dude a day, night, life, year. I mean, you gave that guy a moment. He'll never forget. 18-year-old kid, by the way, which I didn't realize from Madison, Mississippi, who had made the trip. So anyway, just a really neat thing. Your tweet got a lot of play, too. I mean, it's, that's going to be. Pettino and Kelsey? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:00 That's one of my three or four biggest tweets of all time. But it wasn't me. It was the kid who took it. It's just Adam Town. We'll take a break. Take calls right for this. KSR. Is he?
Starting point is 00:30:10 T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 899-2-80 2287.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Text machine 772-7-4. Let's just quickly two other things. Louisville 1 at Pitt. They're good. And how does that make you feel? I think we want Louisville to be fairly good since we beat them. You know, that'll help us, you know, come to selection seating time. They might have a crazy good record in the ACC because they lost to Duke,
Starting point is 00:30:45 but they've already beaten Carolina Pitt and Clemson, who might be the three best teams besides Duke. So the rest of the year, they're playing bad teams. Now, they're not going to get a lot of quad one wins, but they might end up with a gaudy record at the end of the year, Drew. Yeah, I mean, I prefer they lose every game, but now that we already have that win, like Ron said, that's just great for the resume. I think Duke and Louisville both are going to run through that conference. It is not very good this year, which is going to make that Kentucky's resume even better, make those two wins look great.
Starting point is 00:31:14 I think so. Same case with Gonzaga. And then we do have to talk about Arkansas. O and three in conference. Uh-oh, here comes Willie. Yeah, don't let him hear us. Yeah. Willie, don't listen to this part.
Starting point is 00:31:26 All right, so you just wait over there. Just don't listen to this part, okay? You go to the restroom. O-N-3, a classic cow after the game press conference where he's like, I don't even know who we play, you know, what's happening? Is this basketball? What are we doing? And, you know, they might win a game this week because they play at LSU, but 0-N-3.
Starting point is 00:31:52 O'-N-3, and it ain't going to get any easier for that group. You start out the season 0-3, losing games at home. It's going to get a lot tougher. They're not good. We've got to beat them. And I thought going in the season, they were going to be a good team. I mean, they're not good. They missed so many.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Did you see the meme? It was like, did you see the post about what happens if Arkansas players? Did you see the John F. Kennedy post? I don't know if I saw that. I don't think I saw that one. They had a picture of John F. Kennedy where he was like 100 years old. Oh, God. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:22 And they showed a picture of it and said, John F. Kennedy, if the Arkansas players were the shooters. I mean, like, come on now. Like they're being terrible about the fact that because they can't make a shot. It cannot make a shot. This isn't just our opinions. Like they are in trouble with their resume. Like in the, they have one quad one and quad two win combined. They have one.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Well, they'll get a lot of chances. No. You got a lot of confidence after seeing their last few chances? The thing, I mean, the basketball is one thing. I don't think anyone's that surprised that a Cal team's not hitting threes. But this stuff he's doing after the games, Arkansas fans are getting tired of that real quick because he does not have the goodwill there that he had here.
Starting point is 00:33:03 That when do we play did not land very well in Fayetteville. They were livid over that. We heard that 10 times. He had a title. We kind of rolled our eyes like, come on, Cal. Arkansas has no patience for the stats are wrong. When do we play? That got tired already.
Starting point is 00:33:19 They didn't get the Wall Cousins year where all that stuff was cute. It's just like you don't know who we play. These people, a calendar year ago, had tweets that were awful about Cal. So that stuff is wearing thin. Who's up first, Shannon? Kyle. Kyle, go ahead, Kyle.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Hey, Matt, great game this weekend. So overall, our basketball team is ninth in the country and shot attempts per game and 12th in fast break points per game. And we've played eight D1 Power School so far where we're four and no against teams who are top 100 in shots per game, you know, wanting to shoot with us. And one in three against teams 101st or worse. So putting it plainly, I don't care who you are. But if you play slow, I just want to.
Starting point is 00:34:01 our team to push the ball and shoot as much as possible every game driving up our possession totals. This weekend was phenomenal doing that. And starting with the Tennessee game later this month on the 28th, what's your thoughts on? We play six consecutive games against teams outside of the top 100 and shot attempts per game who generally flowed down. I think you make a great point. When we impose the pace, and I appreciate the call, we're great. When the pace is what we want, we're great. When we get up and down the floor, we're better at fast. breaks and other teams were better shooting than other teams. Teams seem to shoot their best three-point percentage of the year against us, at least Mississippi State did in the second half and the first half
Starting point is 00:34:40 they missed a bunch. But the problem is when teams slow us down. But Mississippi State was a team I thought was going to try to slow us down and they weren't able to do it. We scored 95 on a team. Remember, Florida was second in the country in half-court defense. Mississippi State was fifth. So it's really just about do we get to the pace that we want to get to? Because when we do, Ryan, we're as good as anybody. Two of the best defensive teams that we've played all year, Florida and Mississippi State, we scored 106 and 95 against them because we were able to dictate the pace, set the pace. Georgia, they set the pace, slowed it down. That's why we had trouble. And I don't know why one was different than the other. We're going to play Texas A&M. Another team that's going to try to
Starting point is 00:35:22 set the pace. Now, they're more guard-centric, like they're going to, they got guards that are good, but they're going to try to set the pace. Then we'll play Alabama, who I think will be fine playing our pace. Yes. So two interesting home games coming up. Yeah, to your point, I mean, the only three times Kentucky hadn't scored 75 points of the three losses, they're in the 60s in all those games. I just don't think they're going to win any fights that are that low scoring.
Starting point is 00:35:45 Mississippi State hadn't given up, they'd only given up 80 once the season, and they hadn't given up that many going back to like 2016. Yeah. You know, I heard, I was listening to the field of 68 and Terrence Oglesby. who seems like he's kind of taken up the role as like Kentucky critic. He was like, this team's defense, if they have to play a game in the 60s, they're not going to win. And I was like, yeah, you're right.
Starting point is 00:36:09 If we're in the 60s or 70s, we're not going to win. But if we get to the 80s, I like our chance. I mean, we get to the 80s. I don't know if you can out shoot us when we're in that amount. Because we're in the 80s. Somebody's making them. We talked about the rule of 81, I think, with this team's instead of the rule of 71. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:25 We can get to 81. We got a pretty good shot to win together. But it is it will be we're not going to win a game with defense. No. But we can out shoot almost anybody. Remember, we still haven't had a game, I think, where everyone's hot, right? You know, we still missed a lot of shots. Brea was one for five.
Starting point is 00:36:43 If we get a game where everybody's hot, we might score 240 points. Look out. That was so wild about the other night. Seven players, seven different players hit a three and Kobe Brea was cold. Like, he had Garrison hit one. Almano, of course, had the big stuff. That was definitely a no, no, no, yes, three there by Garrison. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:37:01 Let's go to Slugger. Slugger. How are you Slugger? Oh, I'm well, boys. I was actually at the game down there, and I can tell you right now, that place was a Hornet's Ness. Getting in there, it was just one bad mouth there after the other, and they definitely didn't appreciate me wearing blue.
Starting point is 00:37:20 But deep down, I feel like that was our best game all year. Maybe, yeah. I mean, maybe when you can say, I think I still think that Gonzaga win just when you consider how much we were down and all that may be the best. But in terms of winning on the road, like you said, I mean, when you have a 14 point lead and you give it up, I think it's very rare to win that game and then they did. Oh, absolutely. And when we went down 8078, I thought, man, this is, we're in a hole now. Get ready, boys. And not only we come out of it, we came out of it strong. It was a great effort and a lot of fun there. And the people that were sitting around me were bad-mouthed me the whole time. And, let's say, with about 10 seconds to go, they were running for the exit. Yeah, well, that's the way it works.
Starting point is 00:38:08 I appreciate the call. That was the moment I was the most worried. 80-78, we get the ball, and I think we turned it over. So we gave them the ball. They had it back up to. And I was like, uh-oh. And then we came down. I think that we made them take a bad shot.
Starting point is 00:38:26 And then Anzley-Almanor hits three the next possession. That was, I think, a really key sequence right there. Amari turned it over when it was 80 to 78. Yeah, on the cut, Amari passed. You're exactly right. I tell you a spot when I thought, oh, when they banked in the three-pointer. Well, when they banked in a three, they never. It usually never comes out in my favor.
Starting point is 00:38:44 And that was a six-point play. Yeah, right. Because they called a fake foul on Robinson. That has another bad flop if you watch it. Robinson's now been called for two horrendous flops on rebounds, the one at Georgia and then that one. That dude did not get fouled and ended up getting a six-point play. Yeah, and I'll be honest, that banked three. I thought that was the curse because Ohio State banked one in and Clemson banked one in.
Starting point is 00:39:08 I just thought it didn't Georgia banked one in? Excuse me, I meant to say Georgia. Yeah, not Ohio State. Yeah, that's been the, it's been one of those in each loss. Willie just told me that he he was here for the Gonzaga game too which we didn't know because we were out in Seattle so we're not two and oh when he watches the game here we're going to bring him in and make him watch the uh games in March his record a lot better than our record when we do when I watch games here we never win so I think it's because I'm too nervous yeah feel it congratulations to
Starting point is 00:44:40 Willie he's now hosting every game watch party here for the rest of season looking forward to that that's very nice 859-280 2287 one person writes Matt Okay, so Kobe Bray have missed those shots. Collectively, where does this team rank in three-point shooting for U.K. teams? Oh, that's tough because when they're hot, it's as good as any, but they can go cold. I mean, besides this team, what do you think is the best three-point shooting team in Kentucky history, just as a team? We've had individuals, last year's team individually was great, those three individuals, but then the other guys weren't great shooting. What do you think has been the best collective group?
Starting point is 00:45:22 Earlier in the season, I remember a lot of notes of like first time since 1993, opened with five straight games of 10 threes. There was a lot of first time since the 92-93 range, so I'd put those teams in it. The 92-93 was really good because the bigs could shoot threes too. So you had like the four kids from Kentucky, you had Ford, Mashburn, Dale Brown, even Jamel Martinez could shoot the three. if he wanted. I think the team, the Fox Monk, Briscoe wasn't a great shooter, but he was on those. But then Derek Willis
Starting point is 00:45:58 and Dominique Hawkins coming off the bench, that team, when they got hot, could really make shots. And Bam, now makes them in the NBA. He didn't really shoot him when he was at Kentucky. Last year's team's got to be up there, though. Even though we lost, I mean, three of the six best three-point shooters in UK history, on the same team. I'm trying to think of ones in my brains going, Antonio Reechopered and Rob Dillingham.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Yeah, I mean, all three of those guys on the same team. I mean, Cal's had a ton of teams where there were so many good bigs and so many good getting to the basket guys. But as a group of just all three-point shooters, I mean, everyone on this team can make them except Amari. That's pretty good if you have eight guys
Starting point is 00:46:42 who can make a three. Brandon Garrison is three for four from three in the last four games. That's crazy because I sure don't like it when he shoots it, But then it goes in. And Trent Noah's like three or four. He doesn't miss either.
Starting point is 00:46:52 Trent Noah doesn't even is not, didn't even get in, yeah. Oh, that's why I think we're going to name him the Johnny Rocker role player every game. Yeah, every game. Travis Perry made one. He did make one.
Starting point is 00:47:02 He did make one. You could have picked him. Do we put the 96 team in the conversation? Yeah, for sure. They should be up there. That whole 96 through 98 because in 96, everyone but Pope shot three. Yeah. No, I mean, I think I'm right.
Starting point is 00:47:15 Epps, just think Epps, Delk, Walker, McCarty, all those guys. Derek Anderson, Ron Mercer, they all shot three. Jeff Shepard, all those guys. Yeah, no, 96 through 98's got to be in that conversation. But if you asked us to pick who's number one, I think we've hit the top three, 92, 96, and last year,
Starting point is 00:47:35 who's the best? Which one are you picking? Well, I'm going to add one more. I think this one is in that group. I mean, those teams were better. 96, well, 96 and Willie's team are the two best teams of all time, in my opinion. Last year's team was not great, but they could sure shoot.
Starting point is 00:47:56 I think this one will be up there with them, and just if you're talking three-point shooting. Oh, definitely. And Bray, even though he's been cold for a week when the season's over, he's going to be up there at the top with some of the names we've mentioned. One that's not a team, but a back court. Ulyss and Murray didn't miss a lot when they were open. We forget how good Ulys was a three-point shooter in addition to everything else he did. And then Murray, of course, is high on the list. Honestly, I mean, even with Willie sitting here, think about who's on the 15 team.
Starting point is 00:48:23 Booker, Ulyss, Twins, Alex could shoot from three, Trey Liles, and they didn't even let Carl Town shoot from three, and he won the NBA three-point shooting contest. So, I mean, that's also a pretty good group, if you look at. And before that, Cal didn't need shooters because he had Duran Lamb, and when you have Dron Lamb, you don't have Dron Lamb. You don't need anybody else on the team that can shoot when you have a Duran Lamb. Who's up next? Kentucky Surveyor. Surveyor, how are you? Hey, good guys.
Starting point is 00:48:52 How are y'all doing? Doing good. Hey, just a couple comments. So I called in last week and talked about the rebounding. Offensive rebounds have been given up. And I thought we'd done a great job against our sixth state. I'm not mistaken, we out rebounding them all together and on the offensive boards. And so I was curious, I don't know a ton about them as far as rebounding goes.
Starting point is 00:49:13 Just because they're not a great rebounding team or did we shore that up? I thought we did a pretty good job keeping them off the glass on the offensive rebounds. I appreciate the call. They were not as big a glass crashers as I thought they would be. But we actually, especially in the second, you know, towards the end of the game, I thought we did a pretty good job. Yeah, really. You know, overall this season, that's definitely an area where they've not been great,
Starting point is 00:49:38 but they didn't kill us on the offensive glass of Mississippi State. That Cam Matthews, though, he was like a. He was like a. But here's, Cam Matthews was a 90s. percent three-point shooter going into the game and he made three straight although they may say that about all the door but I mean he made three straight by the way Willie got disrespected at the half time of that game you didn't hear this because you were here but Ron Slay and Damien Fishback were talking about the
Starting point is 00:50:03 dudes in the SEC who had dunked on people the hardest because Jack's oh yeah dunked on oh he wasn't named he named like three not I don't think he named a UK guy he named like You could have just named Willie three times. Who did he say? Who? You should have been. I mean, you're dunk against Florida, but it's not just that one.
Starting point is 00:50:24 Then the dude, you made the dude in Cincinnati. He should have retired from basketball in the NCAA tournament. I mean, that dude. I think he did. Remember, he left the game and didn't come back. I think he did retire. What? You think he did retire from basketball?
Starting point is 00:50:38 He should have. That was one of the most embarrassing that. He works at Amazon now. Who's up next? Ed. Ed. What's up, Ed? Ed.
Starting point is 00:50:46 I can't remember who they mentioned. They mentioned like three guys. Can't remember it was. Ed, go ahead, Ed. Hey, man. What a great day to be a Wowcat fan. And I was wondering that Jackson Robinson's breakout performance, you think it continues? Yes, I do.
Starting point is 00:51:03 I think, okay, so after the game, appreciate the call, they asked about Jackson Robinson. Drew alluded to this earlier. Pope said that he came to him after the last game and said, I'm just thinking too much when I missed the first one. it gets in my head all the stuff we guessed about he said I'm not doing that anymore I'm just going to shoot and he's one for one in games since that I think if you know how I've said I don't think any of these dudes are going to play in the NBA Drew if he plays like he did against mississippi state he might be able he could be an NBA player if he plays like that and Pope who's had him a couple
Starting point is 00:51:38 several years now said that was his best college game today he's had better actually really any better statistical games, but just given the circumstances coming off maybe his worst game and all the criticism and doubt in his head to turn around and do it on short notice, Pope said that's the best he's seen from Robinson. What do you make of the fact that Mississippi State hadn't beaten us in the regular season since like 08? Isn't that crazy? That is crazy. Especially that's a tough place to play at times.
Starting point is 00:52:03 So to win all these years in a row down even on their place, that says something about your program. It's weird to me because it's not like they've stunk the whole time. No, they haven't. I mean, there was a period of time where we broke their hearts every year. I mean, 2010, right? We beat them the Call Me game. Yeah. The SEC tournament game.
Starting point is 00:52:23 I think we had, I mean, we've also had crazy endings down there. Reed shot. Yeah, Reed's shot. Dante Allen went off. Eric Daniels hit the layup at the buzzer. The Call Me game. DeMarcus cousin, you know, putting it in at the buzzer to send it to overtime. The fact that they've not beaten us in the regular season since 08 is an amazing stat.
Starting point is 00:52:46 Really is like Ryan said, they don't always have the best team in the conference, usually even more towards the bottom. But they've mostly been a very physical team. I can think of some big guys that have been elite, like Bernardo down there blocking shots. And they've still gone in and played great games. Forgot about Bernard. He's the SEC all-time shot blocker, I think. There's also been several overtime games, including the tip-in. I think Dante Allen's was overtime.
Starting point is 00:53:07 It's like Mississippi State just keeps getting a heartbreak and ending. I think the loss in the SEC tournament that year with Dante Allen in the COVID year is the only time they've beaten us since 08. And it was about one point. I think so. 859-280-2287. Do we have time for one quickly here? I got less than a minute, so we'll do Adam.
Starting point is 00:53:26 Adam, go quick. Hey, Matt. First-time caller. Great day to be a wild category with the last caller. Saw your tweet about the UK official pregame show. I got a kick out of that because as I was listening to the pregame show, I just thought how bad that show had become. And I'll hang up and listen to your comment.
Starting point is 00:53:46 I don't want to say it's bad because I don't necessarily believe that. But I do want to talk about maybe we'll do it in the second hour. If not, we'll do it Tuesday. Dave Baker and Cameron Mills need an intervention. The two of them are going to kill each other at some point. It really is like insane, isn't it? Are you going to let me talk?
