Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

Starting point is 00:02:44 Thursday, January the 16th, I am here at the KS Bar and Grill on a nice day. Finally not freezing. Got some folks here from skydiving in Nashville. Drew and I have skydove. You have not. I have not done that. No, I'd like to sometime. You ought to.
Starting point is 00:02:59 It's an exhilarating rush. He invited us. I'm in. Just you mentioning that, I have nightmares about that day, so. Clark's Pubbetshop phone line is 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine, 772-724-25-4. In this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office, if you call T.J. will make them pay.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Why do you have nightmares about that day? I don't know if you remember. You and Drew took off and left the radio show for the show, to Shannon and me. Well, let's remind people. It was the Army Golden Knights, right? And they came to Fort Knox. Fort Knox.
Starting point is 00:03:35 And they were going to take local media people up in the air to jump out of planes. And they invited me and Drew. And I did not want to do it, but Drew kind of taught me into it. And so we went. But they wanted us to do the radio show there. Yeah. So you guys did like the first maybe 30, 45 minutes. Then you had to go get ready for your jump.
Starting point is 00:03:53 You had on your yellow jumps shoot. You looked like Big Bird. And after you guys left, Shannon can attest to this. They lost all power at the radio station back in Louisville. They could not run commercials. They could not take phone calls. We were on the air for like over an hour straight with no breaks. Me and him in an empty field talking about you two guys.
Starting point is 00:04:13 In summer, where there's nothing going on, no access to the internet. So you couldn't talk to us. And the flight was delayed. So you couldn't even. It was delayed. That's right. We had a bad wind delay. They had a time where we were going to land at like 1145 or 1130 perfectly,
Starting point is 00:04:27 but we had like an hour delay, and they just had to do the show to talk about anything. So you all just had to... It'll go down in history as the worst radio show in the history of radio. Here's the great thing, though. We no longer have technical difficulties anymore on the show. So we don't have to worry about it. Why do you think it was so bad? I mean, it was just you and Shannon Riffin.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I bet that was great. We can handle it for about 20 minutes, but then you talk about another hour of that. What did you talk about? Shannon, I don't even remember what we talked about. It's a nice day, huh? Look at those clouds. Look at the cloud coverage. This grass is really green out here.
Starting point is 00:04:57 It's really nice to come to Fort Knox. Here's what I remember about that. We jumped out of the place. There were, when they, you know, we had a guy strapped. We were, I guess, we were strapped on them. They were on our back. They were on our backs, right? We hang a little lower than they.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Yeah. So the guy said when we jump, you know, it'll be so many seconds. We'll go down and then I'll pull the thing, but you're going to free fall for, I don't know how long as it was 20 seconds. Matt. It felt like six years, but you will free fall, and they were going to have Drew and I, like we were right off each other. So as we were falling, it's kind of cool. You're both falling fast, but it looked like we were right next to each other because we're falling like where I can still see Drew even though we're plummeting to the ground. But then Drew's guy pulls his shoot,
Starting point is 00:05:46 and my guy does not. So Drew just like, flies up in the air. Drew disappears. And, you know, he can't hear me talking. But, like, there's one second, two seconds. And I'm like, hey, man. My man. My man.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Are we still good? Like, is everything, you know, and then, you know, when they pull it, there's a big jerk. Yeah. Right. Now, I will say once, I don't know that I enjoyed the free fall. I was probably too nervous. But once you, once the parachute comes out, the floating, that was one of the coolest things in the world. It's beautiful and you're kind of peaceful up there, and it's really nice.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Well, I know when you guys came down, after the radio show was over, when you finally jumped, you came down, you guys were both like just so, what's what I'm looking for? Just energetic, just, you know, on the cop the world, you were so excited about it. Yeah, I was very good. That's what I'm looking for. But my theory was, look, if you're going to do this, you know, the Golden Knights, it'd be bad for publicity if they took us out right here. Like, that would be a bad way for them to go.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Yeah, I was thinking how rich my family would be if that went wrong. I'll never forget, before we jumped, you actually have to hang out of the plane because the guy that is on your back has to stand on the edge. So you were literally leaning out of a plane and they tell you to look backwards so you don't look down. Because they're like, if you look down, people freak out, they quit. They immediately see just straight down and don't do it. And I had to take a peek. So I turned my head. And with his hand, he grabbed my jaw and turned it back towards the plane.
Starting point is 00:07:12 But I saw enough that was terrifying. It was awesome. I mean, I enjoyed it. Would you do it again? Yeah, I don't know if I would. I mean, it's like I had that moment. You're one for one. Don't test it again.
Starting point is 00:07:22 That's right, yeah. I mean, I have 100% shooting percentage. It's like Jerry Seinfeld said. I now refuse to race. Well, those guys probably do it. Well, like the guy here does it over 2,000 times. Yeah, but he's used to it. I think the second one might be harder than the first one,
Starting point is 00:07:37 because you don't totally know what you're getting into on the first one. Yeah. But I did enjoy it. I did enjoy it. I did enjoy it a lot, and it was going to be good. When you land, I didn't even ask you this. It was like a big thud? Like, you land kind of hard?
Starting point is 00:07:48 No, they tell you to, like, run. Like you ran. You slide. You lift your legs. No, you slide. That's right. You lift your legs up. You lift your legs up. He runs and you slide on your butt. I got you. They had handles on our legs and you would hold you, you made sure you held your legs up. Yeah. No, he's right about that. We landed in that big field. This is the other part I remember about that story, though. You know, we finish and we drive him back from Fort Knox and you were the whineiest person about having been stuck on the radio. Like,
Starting point is 00:08:15 you were whining and complaining. It was awful. And I remember Drew, he was like, I get to pick lunch. I get to pick lunch. And I'm like, okay, fine, man. Like, why are you so worried? He's like, I get to pick lunch. And I remember you picked the Dixie Highway Hooters. That's right.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Went to Hooters. Dixie Highway Hooters, which I thought, what an absurd choice as to where we go. And I remember the Dixie Highway Hooters pulling in there and going, I can't believe we're going here. Can I add another element to that? It was my birthday. And at the Dixie Hooters, I had to do the Hooters. I had to do the Hulu Hoop birthday thing after jumping out of the plane.
Starting point is 00:08:53 And our waitress was pregnant. I remember that at the time. It's a good pick, Ryan. I enjoyed that birthday. I do remember that. Well, that was a good time. 859-280-2287. It's going to be an Ask Anything Thursday.
Starting point is 00:09:04 You can ask any question about the basketball team, about life, about KSR, whatever you want. Ask anything Thursday. And Ryan, yesterday, you know, we had the show. Mario put out the video in the afternoon of my thank you to Tyson Foods. It was very good. And it went pretty mega viral on every platform, but especially on Twitter and Facebook and Arkansas fans, you know, decided to weigh in. And one of the things that has been interesting is the amount of people, the vast
Starting point is 00:09:40 majority of people seem to agree with everything I said. Yes. Because how could you not, right? But there are these people out there that continue to say, and some Kentucky fans, a lot of Arkansas fans, but some Kentucky fans go, why do you enjoy your coach? Why are we talking about our former coach? That's a big thing. And I was on SEC this morning, the radio show. They had me on this morning.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Elisa Lang and Chris Dorian, two people I really like. I was on right before I walked in here. And they kind of asked me the same question. And they are like, do fans really follow what's happening in Arkansas? And I was like, well, yeah, of course they do. I mean, now, whether we should or not might be a different conversation, but of course we do. And I am to the point that I'm like tired of people telling us that we shouldn't, that we shouldn't care what happens there.
Starting point is 00:10:42 because my answer would be this. What if it was flipped? What if they were three and one in conference and we were o' and four? What would happen to Mark Pope? Everyone would go, you changed, see, be careful what you wish for, grass is not always greener on the other side.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Oh, Matt Jones, you ran off a great coach. They're going to go, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And they would do all that. So it is just natural that if it's in, reverse that the same thing would happen or am I wrong? No, I think it is natural. Cala Perry was a larger-than-life figure while he was here. And that is a testament to him.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Yet it is. It is a testament to him and his huge personality that he matters like that. It's like when people used to get mad that Dion would get all that attention at Colorado. He gets it because of who he is. For better or worse, and Cal's the same way. Larger than live. Uber popular for many, many years. years in this state. And you look at their games, we know every one of their coaches.
Starting point is 00:11:47 We know half their players played here. Half their recruits were going to come here. I mean, it's like we know they're an extension of us. So that's why I'm not always be interested. You know, that's a very good point too. I mean, just look at that bench. Cow chin, Kenny Payne, Bruiser Flint, Brad Calapary, all have been here. Adieu, Z, Wagner have been here. Knox, Richmond, Boogie Flan would have been here. Jonas Aedu played at Tennessee. Trevon, Brazil played at Arkansas.
Starting point is 00:12:23 I mean, John L. Davis is the only dude that we don't have any connection to, Drew, so it's going to be natural. Yeah, and I don't understand yesterday I was on our message board, and we're all obviously talking about Arkansas because that game just happened. And someone's like, well, you all just stop talking about it. I look up and SportsCenter's talking about it. And I'm like, we're a Kentucky show. if it's leading SportsCenter, of course we're going to talk about it, and even if it wasn't leading SportsCenter, it's very natural when you make a big decision or have a big change
Starting point is 00:12:50 to compare A to B to see if you're on the right track or made the right move. You're going to look at, you know, say if you buy a new car and you like your new car features, you're going to say, well, the old one didn't do this one. I like that this one does that. You're just naturally going to compare the two things. I mean, I envy the people who can have a messy breakup and not care what happens to their ex, like at all. but I couldn't do that.
Starting point is 00:13:15 You know, if I had a messy breakup, I'd be like, well, you know, is she happier? Now, I don't, I want to be clear, I don't, it's hard for me to articulate this. I don't root for Cal to fail in the sense that I want him to be miserable, okay? I do root for him to lose in the sense that it's better for us, he does, it's better for Pope. Like, I guess in a relationship, if you break up with somebody, their happiness won't have an effect on your happiness, or shouldn't. We can all be happy.
Starting point is 00:13:55 But in basketball, when the team is in your conference, there is an inverse relationship to their happiness and yours. If he had gone and coached at Washington State, his success would not affect us, but he is in conference. it's going to affect this. So I guess the fair question to ask you, what if he was 3-1, 4-0, how would you think we would look at it then?
Starting point is 00:14:20 If he was 3-1 and we were 3-1, then our initial hypothesis, which was this was better for both, I think would be true. If he was 3-1 and we were 0-4, everyone in the country would say they should have never gotten rid of cows, should have never run him off.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Mark Pope wasn't the guy. So, you know, that's the way it is. And I know we have some fans that have a fondness for him, and you should. I mean, one of these days he's going to come back here many years down the road and get probably a good reaction. But, you know, some of us, not just me, I mean, there are fans who wanted to change six years ago. You have to give people the chance to go, maybe we were right when you all. took those shots, right? You think it's harder for the national media to see that?
Starting point is 00:15:16 We know it here. Well, the national media is in two segments. Cow's friends, like Seth Greenberg, are defending him no matter what. Cow's non-friends are dancing because they've, they had to deal with it. I mean, the stuff I had to deal with for two or three years, there's people in the national media have been dealing with for 20 years.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Yeah. Right? So they're really dancing. So, I mean, again, when you're a big personality, people either love you or hate you and that's kind of how it is with him. And really, if you compare about or care about Kentucky, which I assume most people listen to this show do,
Starting point is 00:15:50 you don't want John Caliper to win the breakup because Kentucky needs to be Kentucky moving forward. And if it looked like it really was just Cal's headquarters here, that's damaging to recruiting. That's true. The future. Mark Pope's got to go into locker rooms or living rooms and say, Kentucky is still Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:16:06 He was a great coach here, but the brand is still the brand. And if Pope were 0 and 4 and Cal and 3 were 3 and 1, that would be very hard for Mark Pope to go recruit players. I think that's a really great point. And if you don't think Cal and Chan and the boys aren't talking trash in every living room about Kentucky, then I got some big front properties. If we lose to them, let's say they come in here 0 and 7 and they beat us, that's going to stink.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Oh, yeah. But it still in my mind won't change the overall opinion that it was the best thing. Don't you agree? If they come in here and win, I'm going to go, that's John Caliperi. He disappointed Arkansas for a month. He had us flexing, and he went and won a game, and you count them out, and then he's not going to be in the tournament.
Starting point is 00:16:49 He is going to beat somebody good. He might be us. He'll beat Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, or Alabama. I guarantee you he wins one of those games, because he always did. Always does. He always did that. And he will. I hope it's not us because that would not be fun.
Starting point is 00:17:07 859-2-80-22-87. It's Ask Anything Thursday. You can ask any question you want. Medvedev is playing tennis. Shannon, I want you to look up. They did one of those things where they turned the tennis into a cartoon. You know how they do that? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:20 So Medvedev was playing in his first round. They turned his match into a cartoon. Well, he's got a heavy temper. He's very big-tempered Russian, right? Yeah. And he got mad, and he started pounding his racket against the ground, and the cartoon had to do what he was doing. So the cartoon was just hitting the ground with his racket.
Starting point is 00:17:39 I see it. It is very, very funny. We'll take a break. Be right back. This is KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying,
Starting point is 00:17:51 and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
Starting point is 00:18:55 we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:19:16 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now.
Starting point is 00:19:36 Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive?
Starting point is 00:20:16 The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness,
Starting point is 00:20:47 professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WMBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't Don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it.
Starting point is 00:21:09 An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeki. The ability to show gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Welcome back at the Kentucky Sports Radio. This is Chris Stapleton, right? Yes. He has his own channel now on Sirius XM, and I really like it. I feel like he and I, we have the same musical taste. Like, he'll play songs from all different genres, and I'm like, I like that one. I like that. I say him.
Starting point is 00:22:02 I don't think he's actually working as the DJ when it's happening, Shannon. And I don't see him, like, going, you know, all right, next, we're going to put on this. But I'm a big fan. If he's got his own station, he should go in there and at least do, like, some guest DJ ships. No, he does things like, he'll introduce a song. He'll be like, like, George Jones is my favorite. You know, he'll introduce songs. But he, I feel like he and I are just on the same.
Starting point is 00:22:24 He heard a good story about it. You guys probably heard this. But, like, you know, he played baseball and football at Johnson Central. He'd go on road trips, he'd take his guitar and he'd play to the team, you know, while they're going or coming from the games and stuff. You better make sure you're good, though, when you do that. Because like, when I hear people just pull out a guitar and start talking, I immediately am like, no, please don't. You don't want to be that guy at the party. There's always one guy at the party that pulls out the acoustic. You don't want to be the guy, like, when I was in college and the fraternity party, when he's like,
Starting point is 00:22:50 all right, I got the guitar and he starts singing, and you're like, oh, gosh, nobody wants to hear this. That's when everybody starts leaving. Yeah, you better be really good if you're going to pull the guitar out. Worked out for Stapleton. So those guys that were on that bus probably has some fun stories to tell to their friends now. Yep. One person writes, Matt, I get nervous, but all this Arkansas taught before the game might be bad karma. Maybe, but, like, you just don't want to talk about it at all? I mean, you know, they're, look, we should beat them.
Starting point is 00:23:20 If we don't, that'll be disappointed. But it doesn't change overall. They're 0-and-4, and they still play, like, eight-ranked teams. Like, they ain't making a tournament. I mean, they play at Missouri Saturday. That was a game that looked like they could win. Well, now Missouri's good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:33 So they might be 0 and 5. Yeah. I mean, they could come here and win by 25. It will absolutely stink, and I will not look at Twitter. But then I'll probably just keep living my life and watch Kentucky basketball finish the season and have a great time. I love this one. This person writes, with the way Brad dresses at the games, I look at the Arkansas staff and think they are a group of the righteous gemstones. Brad does dress like he could be on the righteous gemstones, right?
Starting point is 00:23:57 Like we talked about yesterday, they just sit there. They don't like it. There's no coaching being done at all. The Dixie Highway Hooters, by the way, is now a car dealership. Really? I guess they got rid of that. I'm glad we went while it was doing its heyday. Yeah, that was 13 years ago or 12 years ago.
Starting point is 00:24:12 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, are you going, you guys are off Monday? Are you going to watch the inauguration? No. I thought that's why you were taking off. No way. Are you kidding me? Monday, I'm news blackout.
Starting point is 00:24:29 Monday. We got the game Monday night. And by the way, tomorrow everybody needs to listen because I'm going to be giving away spots. I'm giving away $4,000 here Monday night from Country Roads' spirits. And some of you have already qualified through the bowl contest.
Starting point is 00:24:46 But if you have not, you will have a chance to be part of that Monday night. We will give away $4,000 in cold hard cash here Monday night for the national championship game. So be listening tomorrow. and look at it on social media.
Starting point is 00:25:01 I'm going to be adding people all the time to have the chance to win. I'm glad you just asked that. Somebody just asked me yesterday, can they come Monday and predict that this score? Is this part of the money? They come. If you qualify, I mean, you can come, but in order to win the money, you've got to have qualified. And we qualify by the earlier bowl games
Starting point is 00:25:18 or by some things I'm going to do between now and Monday. Gotcha. But during the day, I'm not, because he says he's going to put 100 executive orders out. I think I'm not going to like. lot of them. So I think I'm just going to have to not pay attention and then get to the national championship game and Notre Dame and what?
Starting point is 00:25:36 Ohio State. Did Notre Dame have any chance? I'm going to be rooting for him, but I don't think so. Ohio State just really hit another level after all that Michigan talk they went through. You think their fans still want to fire the coach if he wins the national championship? What a weird predicament. I mean, they really wanted him gone. And now it's looking like he's going to bring him a trophy.
Starting point is 00:25:52 So what an odd spot for him to be in. The spread was nine? I mean, that's a lot of points, though, in a big game like this. Yeah. Ohio State's got better players, but you know, Marcus Freeman. You think he's handsome? I mean, he's handsome. And, like, that's got a camera.
Starting point is 00:26:07 More handsome than Ryan Day? I can't picture what Ryan Day looks like. He's got the Jet Black beard. Okay. Jack Black, kind of Jack Black-ish. Jack Black? Yeah. Can you see it?
Starting point is 00:26:19 No. Who's up first? He looks nothing like Jack Black. He looks nothing. How do you think he looks like Jack Black? Do you know what Jack Black looks like? Maybe I'm thinking the wrong guy. Jack Black doesn't have a beard, does he?
Starting point is 00:26:29 I guess you had a find a one. No. No, are you thinking about Zach Gallifanakis? No. Well, who are you thinking about it? The School of Rock guy? That's Jack Black. Yeah, he doesn't have a beard.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Yeah, he does a long, gray one. Oh, you think that looks like Ryan Day. That's mean to Ryan Day. Jack Black has a lot more around than Ryan Day, too, though. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's not being fair to Ryan Day. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:26:51 Let's go to Ed. Ed, what's up, Ed? Ask anything Thursday. Hey, guys. as the season goes along I feel more and more vindicated because that's one of the guys that went at Calgary gone
Starting point is 00:27:05 six years ago so I feel vindicated and it's so funny Matt I ran across a YouTuber Arkansas and they're talking about Arkansas it hasn't even been a year yet and they want them gone already
Starting point is 00:27:20 it's very satisfied the Arkansas media should thank us for their views I appreciate the call Because, I mean, when you're, you know the Arkansas fans aren't watching that stuff. Who wants to talk about a team that stinks? Those views are us, right? And so they should thank us.
Starting point is 00:27:36 I mean, and when John Neighbors is here, we will thank him by giving him gifts, you know. And that thing, like, take Tyson Foods. It was funny, but they were rubbing. They sent us a big box of chicken and said, thank you for Cal. So, like, I'm going to be able to say, no, thank you. Thank you. That's what you should say. They were razor-back nuggets that they sent us kind of, you know, poking at us here.
Starting point is 00:28:01 And a cutting board. And a cutting board. Cooler. Merch. Yeties. Yeah. I actually have an Arkansas sweatshirt from when, during COVID, when I went to an Arkansas football game with Bobby Bones.
Starting point is 00:28:14 I'm going to have to sacrifice it or something right there on February 1st before the game. That's actually a good idea. We can do something with that. Somebody told me where I could find a microwave in Rupp Arena. so I think I might be able to get my nugs cooked in there for the game if we're winning in the second half. Oh, you mean just sit there and eat the nuggets? Yeah, I'm going to pass them around Section 236. Well, I mean, they have, in terms of part of the epic failure, let's also remember,
Starting point is 00:28:35 they have the highest NIL of any team in the country. They spent $5 million on this roster. So it's not just a failure in coaching. They have spent more money. You know the two teams with the highest NIL are them in Kansas State, and probably neither one of them is going to make the tournament? Wow. Indiana is also high on that list that's been a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:28:52 talk about Indiana. We got to talk about your former you wanted to play for Bob Knight. The Indiana disaster is a whole other level of disaster, which I kind of dug into last night. I didn't realize it was as bad as it was. We'll take a break. I'll be right back. KSR. Good morning. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. 859.9. 280 2287. Apparently I received false info.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Dixie Highway Hooters still there. Yes. So if you want to have a reunion there, we can't. Where was the Hooters where you saved me and you bid me? The Hooters you saved him getting beat up. I was Preston Highway. You should have
Starting point is 00:29:40 gotten beat up. You were really dumb. You hit someone's car, which was really stupid. You punched their car. He tried to run me over. I mean, it was not good because he said he was going to go get something and come back. And remember the woman at Hooters called the police? Yeah. That was a dangerous little situation. And you're also on Preston Highway.
Starting point is 00:30:06 You got to be careful you mess with out there. There's certain parts of Louisville that like, you know what? Mind your own business. Preston Highway would be one of those for me. He threw his door open and I thought I heard click click. And he's like, you don't do stuff like that around here, son. And then I hear this glorious voice coming across a parking lot, oh, wait a minute. My man, my man. Hold on. Hold on. No, no, Ryan, get inside. Ryan, go inside. I was definitely the peacekeeper there.
Starting point is 00:30:28 You know that were. You know, you'd lost your mind. Like, a guy who's, like, almost hit you with a car and who's talking about a gun is not the person to start arguing with. And I was like, just get inside. And Ryan was just going to serve a little sandwich. Let's be real. I threw my body in front of you, like a secret service agent to make sure you were okay. I owe you my life, sir.
Starting point is 00:30:48 Thank you. Thank you very much. I do want to, before you go back to phones, mention one thing I forgot to talk about on Monday because we were so happy. about the game against Mississippi State. You remember, you know how I like the FAA Cup in England, okay? For people who don't remember, the FAA Cup is where all the teams in England play each other, not just the big pro teams, but also the little tidying teams.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Like you and I, sir, could have a team, we could have the KS Bar team, and we would have a chance, a small chance, but a chance to beat a bunch of teams and then get to play like Manchester United, right? Like that's how it works. So it's very cool. Nothing like it in America. Round three, they have all these qualified rounds, but then by the time you get to round three,
Starting point is 00:31:32 that's where you get to where the big teams and the little teams can play. And Tottenham Hotspur drew a team called Tranmere. Blind draw. Blind draw, and had to play, or Tamworth, excuse me. Tamworth had to play there. So they played in this little stadium that only held 1,000 people. Shannon, the Tamworth team had guys who had, they all had other jobs. One of them worked delivering pastries.
Starting point is 00:31:59 One of them worked in a zipper factory. Like these dudes had regular jobs and then played soccer for fun. And here comes Tottenham Hotspur, whose roster is paid $300 million this year. Wow. So they show up. I, of course, turn on the game. It's a beautiful spectacle. It's literally like they're playing this at, you know, Harlan High School, right?
Starting point is 00:32:20 And here come these guys who are these multi-millionaires. And the crazy thing was they're playing them pretty good. Yeah. Into the first half, tied at zero. End of the second half. Tamworth almost scores. Like they're right there. They miss a chip shot.
Starting point is 00:32:37 They could have won. They had two shots on goal in the 89 minute. Where they could have won and maybe produced the biggest upset in the history of sports. They missed it. Then it went to extra time and in extra time they kind of got run over. But watching it, it was such a nice, beautiful thing, and they just kept talking about, this is the baker, and this is the zipper baker, and this is like the cobbler and all this stuff. And I, you know, Tottenham at first started their reserves because they thought they didn't need to play their starters. The team played so well, they had to put all their starters in, and still they held them off, but couldn't quite win.
Starting point is 00:33:12 It was a beautiful thing. I love the story, the whole thing. I love what you said that Tottenham wanted to agree to, you can play at our point. place and their other teams like no no no no you're coming to our town yeah so they so they had that it was if it's on ESPN plus you know i mean it's a boring soccer match but you ought to watch the beginning because at the beginning these dudes are like just i mean it just it looks like you know elite athletes versus larry mo and currently shan and it was a it was a great thing to watch and i really enjoyed pros versus joes and if the joes beat the pros i think that the pros should have to go
Starting point is 00:33:46 and take the other people's jobs maybe so you think those guys should become the Yeah, the The Zipper factor. That's right. Soccer's probably the only sport where you could do that, and it wouldn't just be a complete route.
Starting point is 00:33:58 And so it was fun to watch. You told us a story one time. Some dude was like a bartender or something, the goalie. They had brought him out at the last minute, one of these little games. That was in hockey. That was the Carolina Hurricanes.
Starting point is 00:34:09 That was the Carolina Hurricanes where their goalies all got hurt. And in every arena, they just have an emergency goalie who just sits in the crowd in case anybody needs him. And then they brought him in, and he won. He won. Which was amazing.
Starting point is 00:34:22 I wish the small team would have won this because you're right. It would have been the biggest story. Yes. It topped up, you know, the worldwide. I was watching it while I was on ESPN. I was pulling for him, but they couldn't quite do it. Who's next shit? Ryan.
Starting point is 00:34:33 Ryan, go ahead, Ryan. Hey, Matt. I'll just talk about Cal this morning's got me thinking back through the process last March and April. You know, we get beat by Oakland. Yes. has a video with Mitch, the awkward video in the office. And then we really need to be thankful that he talked to Arkansas or to Tyson Foods at the Final Four, man.
Starting point is 00:34:58 That was also something we need to be thankful for. But could you imagine if he was still in Lexington and the rolls were reversed and we're o' and four in the SEC, what kind of mood of the fan base would be in? I thought about this. I thought about this last night. I appreciate the call as I was watching one of the games. if Cal had come back and we were 0 and 4 right now this would be miserable
Starting point is 00:35:23 it would be miserable it would be like it would just be miserable Drew and there would be like no I don't know that there would even be an end inside it would like people wouldn't go to the games it would be awful I had a friend texted me when LSU won the other night
Starting point is 00:35:43 that said Lexington would be on fire right now And I was like, I'm not sure there would be a Lexington at this point because you've got to think he probably would have had a worse roster. But the schedule he would have had at Kentucky. We would have gone and lost to Duke by a million. We would have lost to Gonzaga by a million. We would have had more losses than Arkansas had now because Kentucky had a lot more marquee games. Who knows, Louisville might have gone interrup. This would have been on fire in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:36:05 Louisville might have beaten us. That's true. So the 0 and 4 could have been an afterthought if we had run it back with him again. we were already a fractured fan base going into the season. Yes. If they had gone 0 and 4, it would have just been, it'd been off because we would have had to have been honest on this show. We couldn't try to sugarcoat stuff.
Starting point is 00:36:23 Well, I mean, let's be real. I might not have been on the air. I mean, you know. Yeah. I mean, there's a world where I might not have been on the air. They might literally, I mean, you know, I mean, Shannon, there's two people. Who are probably the two most powerful sports figures
Starting point is 00:36:42 in Kentucky of the last 10 years. Patino and Cal Perry. Okay, who would be the third? Jim Host. Mitch Barnhart? George. George, yeah. We took the bullets from two of those three.
Starting point is 00:36:56 And the third one ended up on the show. Did you see what the Auburn fan did at the Auburn Mississippi State game? I didn't see it. So Mississippi State, their official social media, guy, like the guy who types their official tweets, and he types their official whatever. So, first of all, there was the guy, was it the same guy that's in the coconut bra? I think. I think it's the same guy.
Starting point is 00:37:24 I don't know. So if you go look, Ron Slay interviews a guy in a coconut brawl, and he looks exactly like you would think a guy at a game with a coconut bra looks like, right? He's in the student section. He interviews him, you know, he's like, well, it's great. During the game, the Mississippi State, yeah, that's what he looks like. right there. He looks, that's like every Auburn fan but with a coconut bar.
Starting point is 00:37:47 He was a bucket hat on with a coconut bra. He, the Mississippi State social media person leaves their computer open and gets up to do something. Uh-oh. He, I think it was him. If it wasn't him, it was somebody else. They go and get on the computer and tweet out War Day of Eagle from the official Mississippi State account. Brilliant. What a boss move.
Starting point is 00:38:10 And it was up there for a few minutes. and then somebody came and got it. But like he got on, he saw a guy or a woman at the computer and was like, that's the official Mississippi State account. I'm going to go sit at the computer and type a message about Auburn, and he did. Drew, that's pretty amazing. Yeah, I mean, you know, I go to games with my computer and I'll leave my computer open. Sometimes I'll walk off and I'm like, I just left my computer wide open with all these people around.
Starting point is 00:38:37 But I think no one would actually go sit down and start typing. Nope, this person will do it and did it with the ability. Poise team. It was like two minutes before tip-off, too. The official account, Ryan, that he did it with. Can you imagine him walking across Auburn's campus the next day, man? He's a legend. That guy would be talked about forever. Yeah, and we don't know if it was the coconut braw guy or not. I don't think it was. I don't think they pinpointed who did it, but they just know a fan did it.
Starting point is 00:39:02 Yes, well, hey, you know, there's many reasons to buy beef directly from the farm versus the grocery store, which is why you need to check out Noche Linda Farms. The environment the cow is raised in is much cleaner, much safer than the commercial beef, and it tastes better. Farm-raised beef is free from antibiotics and hormonosos. You think they just mean hormones and they accidentally added an O? That does. I don't know what hormonosos is. Hormones O.
Starting point is 00:39:30 That one got past spell check. Yeah, because I don't think there's anything called hormonoso. If it's truly hormones O, I think that would be hormones. When you buy from Noche, Linda, Kentucky Proud Product, supporting local business. Noche Linda is dry age 24 days. Go check them out. Nochelinda Farms.com.
Starting point is 00:39:47 These guys are always cooking it. I gave some of mine to Max. He makes it. Very good stuff. 859707-704. It's nochalinda farms. Once I get my cooking going, I'm going to start cooking Nochay Linda.
Starting point is 00:40:01 I was going to say, what are you laughing at? Sorry, I'd something caught in my throat. Oh, that was you. That was him, yeah. But I was laughing, too. I'm not ready. Well, I'm not ready Monday.
Starting point is 00:40:10 Monday we're just go to a movie or something. We'll take a break. Be right back. This KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying.

Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Starting point is 00:42:06 Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. When Jacob met Levan this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive?

From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't. Don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it.
Starting point is 00:43:40 An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Starting point is 00:44:18 Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-2-8027. The text machine is 772-774-5254. Matt, Ryan, and Drew, getting ready on a Thursday. You know, we got, what, tomorrow we are at bespoken spirits. Yes. which is over there in the Loudoun station, and I'm giving away Kentucky Alabama tickets. So if that doesn't make you want to come out to get Kentucky Alabama tickets,
Starting point is 00:44:44 and again, I know where their tickets are. These are good tickets. These are like you'll be sitting where the mayor of Louisville sat the other night kind of tickets. Did you see him right behind the bench? Every time they take Pope, I saw Mayor Greenberg behind the Mitch. I even text you like, hey, the mayor's got some good seats tonight. Ask anything Thursday. One person writes, the day Max was supposed to do the show and he didn't show up,
Starting point is 00:45:04 whatever happened to it. Well, I, at 2 p.m. he wasn't awake yet. I guess some Australians had come to town, and he apparently was up until 4.30 in the morning, and he forgot to set his alarm. That's what happened. And then he just disappeared for a month, just left town.
Starting point is 00:45:23 He's back now, though. Okay, but he's a lot. We can give him a pass, then. Yeah, I mean, I understand. It's okay. The NCAA has said now that for basketball, your two exhibition games, they can be against teams that are Division 1. You can now, you don't have to play like Transea in Georgetown.
Starting point is 00:45:41 You can play whoever you want, and the games can be on television. Before, you could play a game against that, but it had to be for charity, and it couldn't be on TV. Now, it doesn't have to be for charity and can be on TV, which means you have the ability to play, you know, Duke, Kansas, whatever. Do you like that? I do. We're getting two. I kind of hope we'll split it. Play maybe a Kentucky team like they've done for so long, whether it be Kentucky State or Georgetown or, you know, we've even had Wesley in here, Tranzy. Keep one of those and then give us a good opponent in the second one. It stinks for those schools because that actually is big for their athletic departments to play one of those games. They get a decent little chunk of money that can be. I remember when it was at Trancy, like it helped pay for a renovation of the locker room was when Trancy played Kentucky. So that does stink. But for fans, getting to see them play a real game. It doesn't count, but a game against a good team is good.
Starting point is 00:46:38 I'm with Drew. I hope they at least keep one of those games to, like one of the other schools we're talking about. But, you know, these schools have been playing these secret games, and we keep hearing a word leak out. It doesn't have to be secret anymore. Not secret. Now we get to go watch and play. So I think it's huge, actually.
Starting point is 00:46:52 It would be a big fun way to see the team really guys. So what do you think the game will be like if it's against a big team, but it doesn't count? That would be kind of weird, won't it? Like if you played Connecticut, but it doesn't count. We still want to win, though. I think the excitement will still be high because that's your first time really seeing the team. But you know going home, it doesn't hurt me to pay. It's a little house money game, but I think people would still really get into it
Starting point is 00:47:18 because you're going to be watching your team for the first time or maybe second time. So who would you want to play? Who would you want to play? I mean, you want to use it as a chance to play a team that we don't play, or what do you want to do with it? me personally I would want to play somebody yeah we don't play it's somebody not um you know we haven't played in a while so play like trancy and yukon that'd be a perfect way to start absolutely perfect play those Kentucky Wesleyan and Villanova you know something like that yeah if a team's too good they're going to want you to come back though for the next exhibition maybe
Starting point is 00:47:51 no they are like you so you don't want to give up yeah you don't want to give up an exhibition the following here here's what I wouldn't enjoy I wouldn't enjoy trading Georgetown for Marshall or something like that. You know what I mean? Like I either want us to play one of these small teams, have fun, or I want us to play somebody good. I don't want to see us going and playing Oregon State. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Like, I don't think that would be fun, Drew. You know what? It's like either play somebody really good or let's keep doing what we were doing. Yeah, either play locally teams that are never going to be on the actual schedule. See some Kentucky guys, have fun there, let those schools make a little money, or give somebody exciting. a middle of the road, a mid-major that you're just going to play in the few weeks later on the schedule. I don't want to do that.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Yeah. Who's up next, Shannon? Let's go to Brian. Brian, go ahead, Brian. Hey, first time, a long time. Who are? Hey, Matt, who, in your best opinion, came closer to costing your job? Jurich or Cal?
Starting point is 00:48:57 Probably Cal. George put more pressure on, but he didn't, but like, you know, I mean, the thing was, like, the Louisville athletic director being mad at the Kentucky radio host is, what a shock, right? Like, I mean, that's the whole point. But when it was a Kentucky person, I do think that would have put my bosses in a tougher position. I mean, I understood. But again, this was only a handful of days because this was part, you know, you had the Tuesday where he and Mitch sit there and do that interview. This is just my take.
Starting point is 00:49:39 I can't prove this, but this is just my take from things I've heard and I feel 95% confident on it. I think part of the sort of thing was Cal saying to these folks, okay, here's some of the stuff I want. And one of the things is detach KSR from any affiliation with UK. And because we are on the official UK station, that was going to be a difficult point. I think my bosses at I heart were willing to take up from, I know they were, but you know, you got to know how much they're going to push it, right? I mean, there's a, and we were kind of starting those conversations, and then he leaves, right? So that made it much easier.
Starting point is 00:50:28 George specifically said, fire math. And UK was like, or excuse me, IHeart was like, no. Because, you know, they, George made a lot of people mad because he tried to bully everybody. You know, George, and I appreciate the call. He's a little bit like our next president in the sense of like, for George, it was all about, do you like me or not? And if you didn't, he came after you. and I just was one, but I wasn't the only person he came after.
Starting point is 00:50:57 He came after Venetti. He came after a lot of people. And let's be real. The contract moved from my heart to the current station because they didn't like us. That's what they did. So, you know. Now do Mitch McConnell. Well, Mitch McConnell had more power because Mitch McConnell went to the federal
Starting point is 00:51:15 election, federal communications commission and filed a complaint. And the way the law works is, if they kept me on the air, and Mitch won the complaint, they would have had like, our heart would have had like quadruple damages. But what was devious about what Mitch did is the board that would hear the complaint needed one more member to have quorum.
Starting point is 00:51:38 He refused to confirm the final member so that they could never have the hearing. So we could have had the hearing and I could have been back on the air, but they couldn't have a hearing because they didn't have enough members and Mitch wouldn't let them have enough members. So I was just in limbo.
Starting point is 00:51:52 I mean, You know, it was like Mitch McConnell. It was a deviously smart thing to do. But if you think about it, Cal, Judge, Mitch, and Amy McGrath. It's quite a forsome that I've found a way to make mad over the last few years. And you're still standing here, loud and proud. I don't want to be too.
Starting point is 00:52:15 We don't want karma too much. Knock on wood. But the cow thing here definitely had legs. The cow thing, go back to the days. Tuesday's their agreement. On Thursday, I have a phone call that makes me think, oh, no, next week's going to be quite a week. And then on Saturday, it starts the leak you might leave. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:34 So I'm glad he did. We'll take a break. Be right back. Hour number two. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman helped make you funnier.
