It's still freezing. Is this ever going to stop?
Starting point is 00:00:40 I'm really tired of. Tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow. 40s in the 40s. All right. I'll be shirt off tomorrow. You can give us a shout of the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:00:51 A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-75-25-4. In this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office, you call T. He'll make them pay. We are at Don Franklin Hyundai. This is out here on Richmond Road, past Man of War. You should come see us. Now, the parking situation, they've got such inventory here at Don Franklin Hyundai that, like, there is literally nowhere to park.
Starting point is 00:01:14 I drove around, and so I asked them, and they said, if you come out here, you can just block all their cars in. Like, just because there's no, they don't have anywhere to park, so you can just block all their cars in, come out. And if you get here by the end of the show, at the end, I'm going to give away one of the remaining Kentucky home basketball game tickets, either the Vandy or the South Carolina game. You can choose when you're here. Yeah, that's the kind of guy. Here at Don Franklin by the end of the show. Ryan, Don Franklin has all your needs. Whatever your needs for your vehicle, whatever your automotive needs, they have it in Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:01:49 And they have sales going on right now. You could get a 2024 Buick Encore GX for just 20. $24,603. That's a very specific price. If you come in here and want to pay $602, you're going to get your bill full and get another dollar because it's going to be $630. They've got a huge lot full of cars. So, yeah, if you're thinking about it, maybe now's the time to come out here and check them out. They're everywhere.
Starting point is 00:02:13 I always saw those, like, on the prices right, it would come down to like 603. And I'm going, there's no car that's actually $603. This one is. I kind of thought that, too. I always thought it was like 99 or 100. No, $24,603, Shannon, and not a penny more. Well, I'll take it. Sounds like a great deal.
Starting point is 00:02:32 I'll tell you what, if you'll buy a car today, I'll cover your $3 on the top of that. I'll put the $3 down for anyone that wants to buy a car. You know what? That's really nice of you to go ahead and get that final $3 so that everybody get that. So there you go. $3 off your vehicle from Drew Franklin at Don Franklin here in Lexington. So big weekend. We've had a week without Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:02:54 basketball, but that goes back to being over on Saturday. Kentucky plays Vanderbilt 230, sort of an odd start time, but 2.30 in Nashville. Ryan, I already know a bunch of people going, but more importantly, this could end up being besides the Arkansas game, the most expensive Kentucky ticket on the market this year. I guess it's the small gym playing in Nashville, Western Kentucky on a Saturday. day. Vandy's been pretty good. They're kind of on the bubble of the NCAA tournament right now. I'm surprised by how hard it's going to be getting in, but I can tell it's hard because I have random people sort of in the Nashville area going, hey, Matt, how things been? What are you thinking
Starting point is 00:03:40 about our cats? Got any tickets? What are you hearing about tickets Saturday? You know, exes that they've reappeared in my life. People want to get into the game. Kentucky has always had great crowds when they played Memorial Gym just because all the Western Kentucky folks, fans, it's their closest they get to go to watch and play. But yeah, it is amped up. And I think Drew hit it yesterday because it's a Saturday afternoon in Nashville. You can spend Friday night, go to the game, spend Saturday nights, have a whole weekend there. Even with that, though, I mean, I'm shocked.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Like, I'll look here in a minute on the stub hub, but, like, it's crazy. And I think that's going to lead to an awesome atmosphere tomorrow. I mean, I don't know what it'll be. Maybe 60-40, Vandy, but we will have a significant presence in there. I think it's going to be almost like, I don't know, almost like an NCAA tournament game where the arena is kind of split and you're in one place. You may see that tomorrow. Yeah, it's going to be a great environment.
Starting point is 00:04:32 And not much of a surprise. Some of my friends are already there. I was getting where are you at or you here yet last night. So I think a lot of UK fans are going to make the most of this and be very excited for that game. But on the Vandy end, even though they just lost at Alabama, the two games before that were at home, both big wins that came down to the final second. So the last two times Vandy's been at home, they've beaten Tennessee at the very end and South Carolina at the very end. So they got a little magic going there that I'm sure their fans want to keep going.
Starting point is 00:04:57 I know you're a fan of them, Shannon, but when I've seen Vandy this year, with the exception of that Alabama game, it's like every game is close. They don't really beat, I mean, Tennessee was number one team in the country. That game was close, and then they won. But then they also played South Carolina, the worst team in the conference, and that game was close, but they won. In the non-conference, they barely beat a couple stinky teams, but then they did get one or two good wins. You've watched them. What is Kentucky going to play tomorrow? Vandy's going to play very physical.
Starting point is 00:05:26 They don't have a whole lot of height. They don't have a whole lot of great shooters. If they get into a shootout with Kentucky, Kentucky's going to win that every time. Vandy's got to be physical, get to the line, and win the game at the free throw line. So give me some of their players. Tell me what they like. Because all the guys I knew on that team are now gone. So who's there?
Starting point is 00:05:42 Jason Edwards is their leading score. He transferred in. It's just like Kentucky. Mark Byington, their new coach, brought in all transfers. I would have never known his name, Mark Bindon. From James Madison. From James Madison. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:55 AJ Hoggard is a guy who played four years at Michigan State under Tom Izzo. He's another one of their good players. And then they have kind of like their version of Kobe Bray that comes off the bench. Tyler Nichol is a good three-point shooter. So what do they do that can, like what is their strength? You know, a lot of these teams we've played have been really good rebounding. What is the Vandy strength? Creating points off turnovers.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Okay. They, I think, average 16 turnovers that they create on defense per game. So if they can get to that number, I think that. that's their advantage over Kentucky, create turnovers and then score points off of that. Yeah, I heard the announcer during the Alabama game, Drew, say that Vandy likes to kind of have a tempo. This is not like the Stackhouse Vandy teams that I thought kind of slowed it down. That's what we want. We want to play teams like that.
Starting point is 00:06:39 I think if we can get into tempo, we're better than them, and that would be good for us. Yeah, they're similar. Add into Shannon's point about turnovers about Kentucky, their turnover ratios a lot of like. Vandy's like top 20 in both creating turnovers and not turning it over. So I think whoever protects the ball could be big. Kentucky's faced a lot of good rebounding teams lately. That's one thing Vandy doesn't do really well. They did well against Tennessee, getting second chance points,
Starting point is 00:07:05 but I think they might even be last in the conference and rebound. With that game against Tennessee, they were up by 16 points. They don't close out well at all. The South Carolina game, they nearly lost. So we can come back. Yeah, so if Kentucky's down by, let's say, double digits in the second half, I wouldn't be too concerned. All right.
Starting point is 00:07:20 So the most interesting thing about Vandy is they have a 6-9, 250-pound point guard. Because everyone on the roster is listed as a point guard. If you go to Vandy's website, every player is a point guard. I forgot about that. That was his thing, is he was putting every single player as a point guard. I think Brandon Garrison and Amari Williams are already in the portal, wanting to go to Vandy. I will tell you, yeah, Mari Williams thinks he's a point guard every single game. He's clear out left-hand only dribble and go to the rim.
Starting point is 00:07:48 So for me, this game is actually a really important game for Kentucky. Again, I really don't give us a chance of winning the SEC now. But I do think we can be a top, I mean, my goal for the team at the end of the year, I'd like to see them be a top four seed. I don't think that's certain. I'm not even sure if it's likely, but I do think it's attainable. If you're going to be a top four seed, you've got to win this game, right? If you want to be a top three or four seed in the NCAA tournament,
Starting point is 00:08:16 I think you need to win this game. There are still losses on the schedule. There are still hard games on the schedule. There's probably even still an upset on the schedule. But you win this one. You'll play them at home later. Get a big win. I think this game, Ryan, at 15 and 4, what are we?
Starting point is 00:08:34 14 and 4. At 14 and 4, this is one I think you need to get, especially at Tennessee and the ordinary horizon. I think it's very important because, you know, Vanderbilt's 15 and 4. we're 14 and 4. Kind of ironic, we're both coming off losses to Alabama. I thought that was kind of unique.
Starting point is 00:08:51 But for Vanderbilt, they're going to beat teams at home. They're good enough. They've already got Tennessee. They're going to get a lot of wins. So if you can sneak in there and get this one, that absolutely helps you at the end of the season. Yeah, I mean, Vanderbilt's been fortunate in the sense that their non-conference wasn't great. So they have less room for error in the SEC than we do. But, you know, just look at the games.
Starting point is 00:09:14 at Tennessee, at Alabama, home Tennessee, home Auburn. Those are four extremely difficult games left. You still got to go at Missouri, at Texas, at Oklahoma. I mean, you got tough, tough games going. This is one of those kind of like when we played at Mississippi State, Drew, a week or two ago, where you go, let's get this one and then put everything else to the side. If you want to win, I think you want to win half your road games, this is one you need to get. Yeah, and so far, after the three losses,
Starting point is 00:09:44 they've able to play a game afterwards. They've bounced back, haven't dropped two in a row yet. They've always responded well. You want to see them do that again. Also, just look at it, looking at the standings, I consider Kentucky and Tennessee kind of been a race for the same spot. With Tennessee just dropping this game at Vandy recently, I kind of see it as a way to get a slight half a game edge on them in the race,
Starting point is 00:10:02 how Vandy helped you out last week. Yeah, I mean, Florida is kind of in that group too, and they had a chance to drop that game at South Carolina, and they ended up coming back. I also, you know, notice when you watch those games, Tennessee dropped it. But the couple other teams, Arkansas was one of them, but then Florida was as well, where they were down the whole game and then came back and got the lead right at the end and won. Shannon, that might be what Kentucky has to do because you're right.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Vandy has quick starts, poor finishes. Yeah, I can see that. And if that's the situation, comes down to free throws at the end of the game. Like I was watching Vandy Tennessee, their guys tightened up. But surprisingly, this free throws at the end. This team has not, Kentucky has not been great on free throws. I mean, it's weird to me for a team that's such a good shooting team, we really struggle on the line. It seems like especially in close games.
Starting point is 00:10:56 We actually did okay against Alabama, but some of those other games, Otega Owe will go up there and miss too. You know, Butler will miss them. I don't understand why this team is not. Feels like to me with how good they shoot the ball. They should be like the team was last year that when the goal. guards got the ball, the free throws were in. It just hadn't been like that this show. And I'm starting to hear more and more of that.
Starting point is 00:11:17 You're right. Butler, Otega, and Amari. Those are the guys that seem to be at the free throw line all the time. Oddly, I don't blame Amari a lot. Like, he's, I mean, he's a big guy. He's actually shooting, what, 68% from the line. That's probably better than I thought he would do, honestly. But it's the guards for me that, that miss those free throws at the end that's really
Starting point is 00:11:35 frustrating. Yeah, Butler's been pretty surprising there. Well, I even think a Gonzaga game, we had a chance to close. Was that Andrew Carr at the line? He made the defensive play right after missing it, but that was a chance to put it away. It rattled out. Another thing that surprises me with free throws, although it's been like this whole career, Kobe Bray has only taken like six free throws this season, maybe seven.
Starting point is 00:11:54 I mean, that's just a guy that's a great shooter that just, I know it's not how he plays, but to never go to the line when you're that good is pretty wild. He never goes to the rim, and even when he does, he falls away. They did, I did see that Mark Pope said they, you know, he spent the whole week trying to draw foul. So, Shannon, we'll see. Do we do we do we do we do we do we do what these other teams are doing flying the guys take a foul you know I mean we we have not done that I think it has hurt us we'll see if they do it with we've seen other teams do this against Kentucky the flop I mean was a game a couple of it's a flop there was one a couple of weeks ago no there's been flukane in the majority of game that was definitely a flop but I'm talking about that was on a rebound right I'm talking about the you go up for a layup you can either put your shoulder into the guy Keith Bogans is always a dude who I think used to do this.
Starting point is 00:12:43 He put the shoulder into the guy and you could get the foul. Or you could try to miss the guy, go farther from the rim. And that usually, you don't make the shot and you don't get the call. Right. And Mark Pope's been studying the referee, so he should have an understanding on where they're going to make calls and where they're not. When I look at these games, I always like to think a famous one. So at Vandy, Ryan, over the years.
Starting point is 00:13:04 I think the one most people would think about is the Nazi Mahomet underhanded shot with Tubby. Running off the court, looking at everybody while he said, get off the court. That was before the monitor review. Instant replay. Get off the court. Yeah, get off the court, get off the court. There is the game.
Starting point is 00:13:22 I often think of the Billy Gillespie game where we lost by like a thousand with Ashley Judd in the stands. It was about 50. That's when they kicked Dusty Mills off the team after the game because he and Morricino Williams were laughing on the bench during that one. I think of the John Wall game against Wurdy. What was the center you all had? Ogilvy? A.J. Ogilvie. A.J. Ogilvie.
Starting point is 00:13:45 And DeMarcus cousins making fun of him. What other games at Vandy do you think of? Those are the three top ones for sure. I think, if I remember right, it seems like I think Saul Smith had his best game ever at Vandy one time. And they had like over 20 points come from behind him. There was a game, I think it was 2003 where Kentucky came in and just blew them out. And Vandy's point guard couldn't even get the ball across center court because Kentucky just had so many turnover. We have had a couple of those games, especially.
Starting point is 00:14:11 in the last 10 or 12 years where we just blitzed Fandy off the court in those games. We get an early lead and it's just over. Is there one that sticks out to you? Last year they won by 35. That was pretty impressive. The 96 team, I think, scored 120-something, won by a million. Oscar had his career high there. He had like 30 and 16 when he was just getting started.
Starting point is 00:14:34 I think about the COVID team got to win there. Like Davion Mintz had a big game. That's right. The very recent success or years. have been very good for Kentucky there. I mean, they have some absolute blowouts against Vandy. By the way, the game at Vandy during the Billy Gillespie years was maybe the wildest game in UK history. We lost by a million. We kicked a player off the team after the game. They made Jorts ride home. It made Jorts stay in the bathroom stall at halftime, and then made him ride home
Starting point is 00:15:03 when the managers didn't even allow him to go home on the team playing. That was maybe the Billy Gillespie era at its nadir right there in the year. Yeah, you mentioned National Judge. She sat on the end of the bench. She was right there on the bench that game. I was there that game. That was horrible. It was awful to watch.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Could you imagine if we had a show like this show back then? Oh, yeah. Like to be able to talk about that. I mean, when that game was over, just as a side note, when that game was over, I got a text message from one of the players' parents that said they made Josh Harrelson sit in a toilet stall at halftime. You have to put that on the website. And I was like. Oh, what?
Starting point is 00:15:43 Do I put that on the website? But that happened right during the season, right there during the season. 859-2-80-2287, Katzen Vanderbilt tomorrow as the old Dennis joke, Two-Hurdy. Two-Turdy. Oh, you made Nick Rouse so proud. Tooth-Hurdy. Now, don't shake your head, ma'am. That was a good, you know.
Starting point is 00:16:03 If Ryan made that, you would have made him sit outside. Exactly. We'll take a break. We're back. It's KSR. Last night. A blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.

Like I said, if you pull up, you can just park anywhere here, Don Franklin, and you'll be parking next to a great deal and savings. Oh, nice. Oh, dude, how good was that? 859-280-2287. We're doing the old guy thing where we just remember games.
Starting point is 00:20:03 The Digger Phelps telling us, what was it? Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me. That's in 2012. forgot one year this this game at vandy was a game that bobby night called where he got confused about the shot clock or whether or not remember that he goes what's this number well yeah what is this
Starting point is 00:20:21 well this is the game clock well what's this one down here's this where are we who am i you know there was that was that was during this game one time i remember the incident forgot completely was against vanderbilt at vanderbilt yeah we were down on the billy gillespie year at halftime 41 to 11 i was just asking you during the break is that the lowest half-timore time point total for Kentucky you said I think it was I think like you know back in the day they'd play to like the final score would be like 1310 right so it was before but in the shot clock era oh for sure in the shot clock era I don't think we've ever only scored 11 points you got to remember that was a good Kentucky team had remell Joe Patterson I mean they were good and we just got smoked that night and then
Starting point is 00:21:02 in 03 you were talking about that was the that was the game where we turned the season around you remember tubby I think you might remember for people that time He got that look on the sideline where his eyes bugged out, and he started, ah! And then they, in that second half, went rolling, and then they were great the rest of the year. They came out and clamped down on Vandy that second half of your right and carried that through where they did not lose another game until what was it. Drew had one more good one. What was it?
Starting point is 00:21:29 The Riley La Chants. Oh, yeah. That was in Rob. That was in Rob. Oh, okay. He choked twice. He choked there, too. Not the famous free throw one, but he had another game where he had a chance and didn't do anything with it.
Starting point is 00:21:39 A la chanced. All right, so if I'm not 2,80, 23, that's at 2.30. That's really good. That's what time it is at a dentist office. Liam Cohen. So it turns out my text. Maybe you're good after all. You know, I almost really screwed it up because I almost like took it back in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:22:00 I was rooting for that. And then he would have come back at night. I ended up, I did not take it back. But Liam Cohen flips and ends up going to Jacksonville. The story is kind of amazing. So apparently he tells Tampa on Wednesday that he is going to sign a long-term deal. Then they start calling him Wednesday night like, hey man, haven't signed it yet. What's up?
Starting point is 00:22:25 When are you going to come in tomorrow? No response. Thursday, no response. Apparently he's on a plane in Jacksonville meeting with the Jaguars. The GM, he said he didn't want to work for that GM, so they just fired that dude. They fired the GM, told Liam he could pick the GM. Think about that. They said you can pick your boss, which is one of the more amazing things I've ever heard.
Starting point is 00:22:50 You would think he's Vince Lombardi, if they're telling him he can pick his boss, still doesn't call Tampa Bay. Looks like Tampa Bay goes to the media and is like, we haven't heard from Liam. We don't know what's going on. The media then leaks that out, and he ends up signing last night with Jacksonville. Crazy story. And then I thought, well, that ain't all that different than what happened here at UK. Might as well just say.
Starting point is 00:23:16 So when that was going on with him talking to Tampa Bay, you know, I'll just say, I got a phone call that was like, why are you saying I'm going to Tampa Bay? I'm not going to Tampa Bay. And I was like, okay, I guess you're not going to Tampa Bay. And then the next day he was in Tampa Bay. So Liam Cohen, Ryan, I just think that's how this dude rolls. Like, great coach, good dude. Maybe you can't trust what he says in any given moment. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:23:49 I can talk about it now. He bought my buddy's house the second time. I was the listing agent. I was involved in the real estate deal where he bought when he came back the second time and said, this is the house we're going to raise our kids in. They just had a baby. We are planting our roots. We are staying in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:24:04 They're going to raise our kids in this house. But, I mean, literally. And I, again, I like Liam. So this is, I'm not, and I'm not just saying that like, and I like you, but I do like Liam. But I was in, I remember where I was what was. I was walking down the street in New York City. He called me and goes, why did you tweet out that I'm looking at Tampa Bay? And I was like, well, I'm not the one that reported it, the Tampa Bay, whatever.
Starting point is 00:24:26 He was like, I'm staying here. Why did you tweet that out? Hey, man, it's just what they said. All right. And he goes, say that I'm staying. And I didn't because I was. walking down the street in the cold. And two hours later, he was in Tampa Bay.
Starting point is 00:24:44 It's just how he is, I guess. Yeah, that's where last night. His resume looks like he's running from the FBI, how he's in, like, one city every year and on to the next one. This is five jobs in five years, right? I get that he's advancing his career, and, you know, he deserves this climb, but it seems like every time he's at a place, he's like the Joker walk away from the hospital burning behind him,
Starting point is 00:25:02 like he's blowing up everything as he leaves. Yeah. He's burned every place he's been. I think Mark Stoop still likes him. I think I... Hopefully not enough to ever bring him back again. I don't think it'll be a third time. I do think Mark likes him.
Starting point is 00:25:17 But, you know, I know the... I will say this. I know he told Mark, I promise you I will be here two years, the second time. And then he wasn't. And so you just don't know with him. With all that said, he ends up in a situation where he's the head coach. He gets the GM fired. Like, and my text ended up still being true.
Starting point is 00:25:40 It just ended up being true 24 hours after I thought it would. You should go back and hit the thumbs up on your own text right now. Oh, I will. I'm going to do that right. Let him know. That's good. That's good. That's good.
Starting point is 00:25:50 I'm going to do that right now. That's a really good idea. That's a great idea. I'm going to thumbs up the text like, see? Knew it all the time, Tony. All you had to do was trust me. I knew he'd end up in your house. And wasn't there one part of the story where he told Tampa Bay he didn't answer his phone
Starting point is 00:26:04 because his kid was sick. But his kid wasn't sick. in Jacksonville. Even if his kid was sick, it doesn't have anything to do with that. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. I mean, I mean, just line ball.
Starting point is 00:26:13 Listen. Just line ball. Oh. I don't like them. I mean, you don't want any left. Wow. That's a little harsh, isn't it? He left the first time.
Starting point is 00:26:20 I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He came back. He lied again. Done with that guy. Wow. Wow. Wow. Well, he wouldn't.
Starting point is 00:26:29 What if he goes to the packers? I bet. Yeah. What if he got to go somewhere next year? I hope he doesn't. Yeah, exactly. Well, take a break. Take your calls.
Starting point is 00:26:35 8-59-2-80-22-87 is KSR. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here at Don Franklin Hyundai. Come on out before the end of the show. You've got a chance to win UK tickets. UK-Arcansas is eight days away, and the people just keep getting excited about it. I got some news on that in just a second.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Couple open lines, 8-59-2-80-22-87. One person writes, Matt, I really enjoyed your interview the other day with Jay Williams, but I have to tell you all my friends and I are talking about is the fact that he called you MJ for some reason it annoyed us. Yesterday, I was in the pharmacy, getting medicine. Guy came up to me on the way out. Said, I loved your interview, but why did he call you MJ? Drew, you said.
Starting point is 00:27:23 I've got several texts too. Why did that bother people so much? He called Jay Billis, J.B. What was he on? Probably 20 minutes. I'd say the first 10 minutes, I can't tell you what he said, because I was just like, stop saying MJ in my head. But MJ, but MJ, but MJ, but MJ.
Starting point is 00:27:37 We're boys. We're boys. We're going way back, MJ. Okay. Is it me? And J.B. I noticed that, but is it just because M.J. is Michael Jordan? Is that what it is?
Starting point is 00:27:47 You don't want to give, let me be MJ? It felt like a force nickname that. Okay. Yeah. So what if I had said, hey, it would have been hard if I said, hey, Jay Will? Yeah. For whatever reason, if I heard that one, but I've never heard anybody call you M.J. Not one time.
Starting point is 00:28:03 That's why it sounded odd. Well, clearly, people did not enjoy it. Who's up first, Rick? Got Grant up first. Grant. Go ahead, Grant. Good morning, Matt. I have a question.
Starting point is 00:28:15 When it comes to Arkansas game, I expect Cal Perry and this fair share of booze and he comes in the ruck. Yes. I understand because, you know, he's left for a conference rival. But at the same time,
Starting point is 00:28:26 you know, he kind of gave Kentucky fans what they wanted because, you know, we needed a new coach and we needed this. Yeah, but okay, I'm going to let you make your second point, but let me say about the he gave Kentucky fans what they wanted.
Starting point is 00:28:37 he didn't do that for us. He did it for him. He didn't sit around and go, this will be better for Kentucky fans if I leave. He sat there and said, I'm going to meet with these guys. I may go down there, or I think what he really thought is,
Starting point is 00:28:53 I'm going to act like I'm taking this job, and they're going to give me more money, and that's going to leave me to stay, and then Mitch called his bluff. So while we got what we wanted, or at least what some of the fans wanted, it wasn't like an act of benevolent. He was doing what he thought was best for him,
Starting point is 00:29:11 and then it turns out that was also, I think, probably best for our fan base. My second point was, you know, when Rick Patino came back in the Rup with Louisville, he got food. Yes. And, you know, he came back to Big Blue Madness this year. And he was like, you know, he was electric in there, and everybody loved it. How long do you think it'll be before the kind of sourness of the relationship? Well, I mean, that took 20 years.
Starting point is 00:29:40 that took 20 years. I appreciate the call. But part of the reason it took 20 years, Ryan, is he was at Louisville for 10 or 11 of those years, and he flipped us off, and there was all this. He sort of stirred the pot for years and years and years. Cow will not take 20 years. Honestly, if Cow were to retire at the end of this year, he probably could get cheered in three years if he came back.
Starting point is 00:30:04 But it won't happen while he's at Arkansas, and it'll still take a year or two. Do you think this fan base will eventually embrace him? I don't know if it'll be as much as they embraced Rick last year, because part of why we embraced Rick was Mark Pope was here. I think if Mark Pope's not here, Rick would have still gotten applause, but I don't think he would have gotten as much applause. I think Mark Pope being here.
Starting point is 00:30:29 So if one day we made Tyler Ulyss the coach, and then they brought Cal back, that might be different. But I think the Mark Pope factor is a big part of why Petino got the reaction he did. I totally agree with that. And I also agree that 100% Cal will get the standing ovation applause someday at Rupp Arena. Maybe it's after he retires and they do the 20 year anniversary of the 2012 team. There'll be a moment. There'll be a day where we'll welcome him back the way he's expecting. But it ain't happening while he's at Arkansas. I mean, we're going to be talking about this obviously a lot next week. But he has not done anything, to be fair to him to like, say,
Starting point is 00:31:08 take shots at Kentucky. To his credit, I think he's been pretty good about not doing that. So I think that has helped. But the love of Pope then contrast with what happened last year. It's just natural that it's going to take a little while. That and I think the booing isn't symbolic of, you know, all of John Caliperi's relationship with Kentucky. It's that he's walking to Rupp Arena to beat Mark Pope.
Starting point is 00:31:33 He wants Kentucky to lose that day. He should be booed. I think every coach that comes in should be booed. just because it's him. He is on the other team coming in trying to give Kentucky a loss on a Saturday night in Rupp Arena. I will say another part of that too
Starting point is 00:31:46 is if Calipari were good at Arkansas that would make us, I think, hate him even more. But when he goes there and he loses, I agree with that actually. I think a lot of, you know, some people on the show kind of feel sorry for him. So I think that maybe some of our fan base too.
Starting point is 00:31:59 Yeah, I mean, I'm the one that feels sorry for him more than anybody and I'm the one that gets accused to be in the biggest hater. Vice, so Vice Television, They're doing a documentary series about Arkansas and Cal. So they contacted me yesterday, Shannon. I need your advice on what to do here. Okay, so they contacted me.
Starting point is 00:32:18 They're doing an in-season documentary, but it's starting. The show is going to start with the game that's here. Okay. So episode one is going to be the Kentucky Arkansas game. Wow. They actually have not done all that's led to this. They're doing now until the end of the year. It may end up being a bad decision if Arkansas is.
Starting point is 00:32:37 doesn't go to the tournament or anything happened. But they are starting with this. So they're coming here. They asked me if they could come to the remote next week. I said that was fine. The Arkansas dude's going to do his radio show from our bar for a little while, so they're going to come to that. But in the process, they said, and I was a little nervous because they were like,
Starting point is 00:32:56 they said there's a lot of public clips of things people have said, so I'm assuming they mean me. And we want to make sure we get like your size. of it on this documentary. So I told him I'd talk to him, but it'd be interesting. I wonder if this Vice documentary, if the first episode is just going to be like Kentucky fans versus Cal or even maybe me, because the way he talked about it was like, you know, we're doing Kentucky Arkansas and we just want to make sure we hear from both groups.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Well, if you're asking me, should you do it or not, the answer is absolutely yes, you should. And they do an amazing, these are the same people that do that dark side of the ring. They do. So this is going to be must watch TV. It'll be very good. And they're turning around quick. Yeah, yeah, very quick. Our game's February 1st.
Starting point is 00:33:44 They said that episode will be out February 10th. So, like, it will come out. I mean, they are turning around quick. So it'll be interesting to see. You know, I mean, we did this with the Netflix show, so I kind of know how these things go. But they're going to come to the pregame show. Or, like, you know, the games at 9,
Starting point is 00:34:04 they're going to come to the bar during the day. They want to talk to fans that are. at the bar so I would say if you got things you want to say you can probably find your way into it you should be comfortable with that role Netflix kind of made you to portray you as somewhat of a bad guy the first couple of episodes of wrestler now that you thanks thanks a lot do you think they'll try to portray you as the bad guy Netflix tried to portray you as a bad guy well did thank you uh yeah I mean I can't think of anything I've said at any point about him that was not how I felt and was not fair.
Starting point is 00:34:38 So I'm okay with it, right? Like, I mean, I, you know, I think it's fine. What's going to be interesting is what happens after Saturday. You know, after we play them, if we were to lose, this will be the same for the next however long. But I do wonder if we win if it's like, okay, we don't think about them again for the rest of the year. I mean, I think if we win, that would sort of help take some of the, stuff off. Do you know what I mean? I think so too. And if we were to win that one and, you know,
Starting point is 00:35:11 if they were to lose tomorrow, it gets to the point, like, they're not even in the conversation at all. Part of it was, let's get a better seed than Arkansas. We got to make it farther than the tournament than Arkansas. If they're one and eight and not even in the conversation, it is going to be much easier to forget about them and move on and be excited about the rest of our team because they will literally be irrelevant to college basketball. Who's up next, Rick? Sawyer is up next. Sawyer. How are you, Sawyer? Doing good. First time, a long time. Who are? What's up?
Starting point is 00:35:41 I just got to say you guys have been talking about feeling sympathy for Cal. I just got to say every time he loses, it brings me pure joy. I hate Cal. My family hates Cal. My friends have Cal. I mean, he wants a national championship. I'm not attacking him as a person, but we should have won three or four. My girlfriend surprised me with tickets to that Arkansas game, and I'm going to boo until my throat bleed. Well, I hope you enjoy being on the Vice documentary
Starting point is 00:36:12 because I think they're listening today for calls. So there you go. You may end up on there with that comment. I hope they record me and they can put me on because I believe it. His house is the ugliest house on Richmond Road. That's all I've got to say. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:36:27 Slam in his house now. Well, there you go, Shannon. There's a late quote. Well, you wonder, will you get booze? We know at least one. I hate Caliperia, his house is ugly. And I'm not a lawyer. Hey, B-B-N.

It is Kentucky Sports Radio here at Don Franklin Hyundai. Shannon, I have another price for you of a car.
Starting point is 00:40:46 All right. Let's go. A 2024 Hyundai Tucson SEL 32,3,345. Oh, okay. Well, at least on a five or a zero I could get. Will you throw in the $5? Oh, yeah. No problem. I got $5. What a coincidence.
Starting point is 00:41:04 $32,340 with the $5 Drew Franklin bonus here at Don Franklin. Yeah, happy to have my $5 generosity here. Drive on over, Don Franklin Auto.com. We have some breaking news, Rick. There you go. Rick's getting quicker on that trigger. Pete Carroll will be the new coach of the Oakland Raiders. Las Vegas Raiders.
Starting point is 00:41:31 Same thing. Las Vegas Raiders. Whatever. Tells you how, I only host an NFL show on the SPN. Don't listen to me. He will be the new coach. He is, I believe, 94 years old. So do you think that'll work?
Starting point is 00:41:48 I don't see how that's going to work. I mean, he's a great football mind, but, man, they need to look elsewhere, I think, if they're trying to jumpstart that program. Is Tom Brady a part of the hiring process? Actually, he must have been. Yeah, I mean, that was, that's interesting. I didn't think about that angle because Brady didn't play. for Pete Carroll, but Pete Carroll was the coach of New England right before Belichick.
Starting point is 00:42:10 So that's interesting. Yeah, I know Jerry Jones interviewed him for the Cowboys, too, and I thought that was funny. I didn't think it was a serious candidate for any of these jobs, but I guess, you know, he's got along here through football. Maybe he can put the age aside in Vegas, stay out late. So embrace the culture. He would be coaching until he's 76 if he goes throughout this three years that he just signed. No, we just swore in a president that's 76.
Starting point is 00:42:34 So if you could be president, I guess you can go. the country you can run a football team yeah um speaking uh speaking to that did uh did you all do what i told you a few weeks ago and go get your eggs have you seen what's happening across the country right now with eggs as i predicted remember i told you yeah they're going to run out of eggs here in a few weeks and everybody goes oh you said the same thing about butter burr br br br br brer well it's happening all across eggs are expected next week to be the highest price of eggs ever really yeah yeah And in most of America, if you were to go to the grocery store right now, no eggs. Because everybody is hearing there's going to be a massive shortage over the next few weeks of eggs.
Starting point is 00:43:17 So I hope you followed my advice, Ryan, and went and got your eggs. And if you didn't, you better go get your eggs now. They say, again, I don't know, that the price over the next two weeks might go up 50%. Oh, my gosh. Because that's because that's because of the combination of economy stuff, but also the bird flu, that the eggs were about to get egg. It's going to be egg terrible. It's egg trocious.
Starting point is 00:43:42 I'm just going to go out and buy a hen at the point. I mean, how much does a hen cost? I don't know. I don't even know where you put a hen. You get a hen. All right. So you get a hen and just give you all the eggs. So watch out.
Starting point is 00:43:54 I hope you went and got your eggs. I didn't. I think I still have some of my refrigerator, but I think I should go buy some now. Well, they showed. I think they was in Louisville. Somebody took a picture. They went to like three different grocery stores,
Starting point is 00:44:05 and none of them had eggs. It's amazing to me when things like that happen. I don't know if it's Facebook groups that tell each other or how everyone knows to just all of us. Church potlucks. It just starts spreading around town that way. How does everybody know we better go get our eggs right now? I think I'm on to something here.
Starting point is 00:44:24 A hen can cost between $20 and $50. So you've got to play the long game here. Hens going to give you a lot of eggs. I think they would be more cost-efficient to buy a hen instead of going to go out of eggs. Where are you going to keep a hen? I don't know, in your backyard and a cage. You're going to need a rooster to go along with that hen. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:38 You're going to need an extra bedroom for that. No, they're saying no, you don't have to. I like that one. Thank you. You want more chickens. Yeah. Yeah. That's not how eggs work.
Starting point is 00:44:46 That's not how eggs work. They don't. I mean, I don't want to explain the anatomy to you. We're going to give you the birds and the bees talk. Let's give you the chickens and the hens talk. You know, the hen just has eggs. The chicken, that comes in, the rooster comes in. That's when they want to make more babies, but the eggs still.
Starting point is 00:45:05 Which? Everybody. But, you know, the eggs are still coming. Yeah, I thought you know you want to keep. Shan's going to start this business. He needs a rooster. I don't want a family. I'm not starting Tyson's chicken in my backyard.
Starting point is 00:45:18 He just wants some eggs, right? And those are going to come anyway. You know that, right? He didn't know that. He didn't know that. He's going to act like he knew that. He did not know that. He thought, you know what he thought.
Starting point is 00:45:29 He had a rooster in a hen to make eggs. No. No. And you've had children. Who's up next? Devin is up next. Even Rick's laughing that one. Devin, go ahead, Devin.
Starting point is 00:45:43 All right, I wanted to bring up, since you guys were talking about John Caliperi last segment. Can you thought every time they had that? I said this a couple years ago. I wanted to see what you guys thought about it now. I compared John Caliperi to Jimbo Fisher. They won a championship around the same time. They had to have the national player of the year.
Starting point is 00:46:08 They were at marquee programs to win this. And then they kind of forward expectations. I think to be fair to Cal, he was better than Jimbo Fisher. I mean, to be better than, to be fair to Cal, he was better than Jimbo Fisher. Cal went to the final four. I don't know. They have the same amount of national championship. Yeah, but that's not.
Starting point is 00:46:29 You can't just do it on that, especially in a one-and-done sport like college basketball. Cal went to the final four at UMass. Cal went to the final four and was one play away from winning the title at Memphis. Cal went to four final fours in five years at Kentucky. All of those things. Like Jimbo had like a two or three year amazing run and otherwise a fairly average career. Cal has been to, he's one of the only, like two or three coaches to been to final fours at three different schools, including schools that once he left collapsed.
Starting point is 00:47:03 I don't think you can, I mean, he, in his prime, Cala Perry was a great coach. Yeah, how many other teams did Jimbo Fisher take to a playoff? Oh, that I don't know. The answer is zero. So that's what, that's, I mean, it's not. He just about did that Texas A&M, I guess. Well, just about doesn't do it. So I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:47:23 He did, again, if we're going to criticize, we've got to be fair. In his prime, Cal was as good as anybody except the top. three or four guys. So in his prime, he's just not in his prime anymore, right? He's a Hall of Fame coach for a reason, man. He's one of the best we've seen in our lifetime. He deserves to be that in the Hall of Fame. When's the last time you thought about UMass basketball?
Starting point is 00:47:48 Marcus Campi. Yeah. And who was the coach? I mean, that's what I'm saying. I do think you do have to give him like his fair props. Yeah, I mean, the run he had in Kentucky those early days, we're not going to forget that. and the issue is that his prime had fallen off.
Starting point is 00:48:03 That's why things went south here at Kentucky. But when he was in his prime, he was as good as anyone. And in college basketball, I mean, I sort of judge it about how many years did you have the best team? I think we definitively had the best team three years. I think in 2010, 2012, and 2015, we were the best team. And then 2011, 2017, we probably were one of the two to three best teams. 2014 we got kind of lucky and went on a run And then I think last year
Starting point is 00:48:36 We should have had one of the best teams But it just didn't it didn't end up happening There's a run there that's hard to match what Cal did here I mean a few coaches can match what he did here That's why he deserves all this high praise He probably does he probably should have gotten Shannon one more Yeah yeah We were the best team in the country three years
Starting point is 00:48:53 He probably should have won two of those three years And we ended up winning one of those three should have been the year. 2015, that one, they'll never be a title that a team should have won more than that one. That 2015 team, that should go down as one of the three or four best teams in the history of college basketball. And then we just let the shot clock. We laid an egg. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:16 We laid an egg, which did not require sex. We'll take a break and be right back. It's Dr. Franklin. KS.
