All right, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, grandpals, aunts and uncles, everybody who's listening today, kind of got a makeshift day today. We'll get into it and tell you what's going on, but it is Thursday, January 30th. We are live at KS. Bar and Grill. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, Shannon, the dude. As always, Kentucky Sports Radio, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law
Starting point is 00:02:58 Office, called T.J., what happens, Shannon? He'll make them pay. He'll make them pay. You may need to call TG after what happened to you last night. We'll have our tweet of the day, our call of the day, our song of the day. We'll have a lot of stuff we're kind of going to just pull out because we've got to call this morning. But we've got a text message this morning. Our beloved Big Toe, a little under the weather this morning, Drew.
Starting point is 00:03:19 He's back in Kentucky, but he's a little under weather this morning. First off, we hope he gets the feeling better. Absolutely. I mean, for him to take the show off, you know he must be hurting pretty bad, whatever's keeping him down. But yeah, I mean, if anyone heard the pregame show the other day, we had a little wrinkle and had to take over, and we ended up winning a basketball game. So we'll do it again today, and we'll fill in these two hours
Starting point is 00:03:38 and put together a good show. So we hope young Matthew is feeling better because we need him this weekend. With the show we've got tomorrow at Whiskey Thief and New Lou, that's tomorrow's show, and then, of course, the game on Saturday that we'll get to talk a lot about as well. I know Matt always does a weather report in the morning when he opens the show. We're supposed to get dumped with, like, buckets of rain today. Like buckets.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Like, it is supposed to just have a deluge, I think, of rain today. You know that? I didn't, but I'll give you my weather report. All right. I'm happy to see my yard again. It finally yesterday at about 3.30 is when the last pile of snow disappeared. So I'm glad we're just past all that. I'd rather not have rain, but the snow lasted a little too long around here.
Starting point is 00:04:15 See, I've still got a ton of snow in my yard because the way it sits, it blocks the sun, and it's always in the shade like most of the day. So I've still got a ton of snow. All right, so listen, we're going to make this an Ask Anything Thursday. We need your help today since we're kind of, without our big toe. We've got some topics lined up for you, but we have to start. Matt always starts also with the little story.
Starting point is 00:04:34 He likes to share a story before we get into the topics of the day. Shannon, you know what he does. Oh, yeah, I know. I know, I know the format. Cranky Shannon's here. We'll get to a reason why. That's part of it. So how'd the Reds do yesterday, Ron?
Starting point is 00:04:48 The Reds, they did sign. Oh, that's right. They signed Taylor Rogers, former UK baseball player. The Reds signed him yesterday. I was kidding, but then we actually had Reds News. We had Reds, yeah, walked into that one. I remember seeing that. Taylor Rogers is a guy.
Starting point is 00:05:04 I think when he left UK, I think, had a losing record, a high ERA, and now he's been in the big leagues for like 12 years. Because this goes to show you, left-handed pitcher. You can get people out, man, they're going to find a spot for you. Yeah, and I saw looking at some, you know, I'm a big Major League baseball guy. I'm always hit with the news. I saw Kentucky prospect Waldy from last year's team. He was listed at the athletics, like among the players,
Starting point is 00:05:28 to watch now they listed a lot of players he was number 62 but that's still exciting for waldi going up to the big leagues on the list yeah i wasn't on the list were you on the list i was definitely not on the list good for him too looking forward to seeing him get started so we're going to let you do you start the storytelling today you tell your story first it's a good one i had an awesome wednesday night i uh my dad and i we didn't really talk tuesday night everyone that knows my dynamic there he loves the tennessee valls i hate the tennessee valls we took Tuesday off as a family said I'll talk to you tomorrow. So we decided to go watch Tranzy last night, come together and watch basketball as a father
Starting point is 00:06:03 and son and not think about what happened the night before, although I reminded him often. So we went and watched Tranzy versus Berea. At Transea. At Tranzy. At the Clive Beck Center. I haven't been there in many years. It's still a beautiful place. I walked right in.
Starting point is 00:06:17 First person I see is Don Lane wearing an old school transie sweatshirt, just like I assume he's always there at every game. Probably wears the same sweatshirt every game. Yes, I love seeing him there. You know, it's a family atmosphere with the lanes. But the game was what I want to talk about. It was incredible. And first of all, people should go to Transi games.
Starting point is 00:06:33 They're a lot of fun. But this one in particular, I'm a little, I'm not positive on my stats here, but people were telling me Bria is new to the Heartland Conference, which is what Transi's in. So this was like a big deal. I knew something was up when both teams took a photo before the game. Someone said that they haven't played in like 60 years, a Kentucky team against Transi in the conference.
Starting point is 00:06:53 I'm going to say that. stats could prove it wrong. Regardless, it's been a long time since Brea has been, you know, in this situation. Brea went up huge early. We're considering leaving early. It's pretty bad. Transi comes back. But at the end, it was just back and forth. Brea had a layup to basically win it. They're up three. They get a breakaway. Transy gets a chased down block to stay alive and then it hits a three to tie it. Whoa. Danes up with the ball again and Brian Lane draws up the perfect full court play with three seconds on the clock to win. Gets another wide open. layup and Maria comes and gets down a block so we go to overtime and Tranzy goes on to win it there
Starting point is 00:07:29 but I had so much fun and there's a player at Tranzy that I believe you coached Hunter Penn Hunter Penn I have a new favorite basketball player I love Hunter Penn I coached him knowing he was like four five six seven eight years old he was on my baseball team well you get credit they honored him to thousand point club thousand point club but I'm telling you I don't I this I don't mean any disrespect here but when he is done playing at Tranzy the YMCA's around Lexington need to look out because that dude is coming to get buckets. Old man basketball. He is the ultimate YMCA big man.
Starting point is 00:07:58 He and a friend of the program, Ian Reeser had big games, but I had to shout out your boy Hunter Penn in a great TransiBria game in downtown Lexington. I had so much fun. Well, I told you, I went earlier when they played Hanover, and I'm going for Hunter's Senior Day, and you looked it up, February 15th. 3 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Kentucky plays at night, so we're going to the senior day game on the 15th at 3 o'clock. Oh, yeah. I didn't expect to get as into the game as I did. When they hit the 3 to tie it at the end, I'm standing up shooting the Jamal Murray Bone Arrow at people. I don't even know. I mean, I had a blast.
Starting point is 00:08:27 So shout out to Transy. I had to make sure I got that on the air today into Hunter Penn, N. Reeser. Nice. Number 20. His name's slipping in my mind. He had a million threes, but everyone should go watch the Brian Lane show down there. Well, we mentioned the Senior Day game on the 15th. They play Mount St. Joseph.
Starting point is 00:08:43 That's where I was yesterday with Little Josiah. So you talked about your father-son experience with your dad. I had a father-son experience with my son yesterday. took him on a college visit and as promised I got in the gear put the helmet on put the jersey on got a couple little photos with him so I
Starting point is 00:09:01 Shannon doesn't like that parent needs to keep in their place but Shannon come on man it doesn't happen very often I gotta do that hold on a minute now you're getting it wrong like I'm totally fine with you being a part of the pictures I'm just saying like you shouldn't be like dictating where your kid goes to school that's all I'm saying I love your pictures with Josiah
Starting point is 00:09:18 I think they're great you don't look like much of a blocker though according to that one picture, it looks like you just run right over you. Oh, dude. Are you kidding? I was in the proper stance. There's no way. I told him that seat. We're lining up and said, you can't get by me.
Starting point is 00:09:28 You're not going to get by me. What are these visits like? Are you watching, looking over his shoulder and like, are you really trying to, like, watching him to see if he's really into it? Are you yourself just looking around, lost and aimlessly? How are you as a dad in these adventures? What kind of role are you playing? It's funny you say that because I purposely, when we're walking around campus on the sidewalk,
Starting point is 00:09:48 I let Josiah walk side by side with the head coach, Coach, Coach Hoffman. The head coach took him on his tour yesterday. I was behind him, about two steps behind him, trying to just listen to the conversation. You know, because Josiah doesn't talk a whole lot, but he was asking questions. So that, as a dad, made me really proud that, hey, man, he's growing up. You know, he's actually into this and wants to know asking some really good questions to the coach. Well, me knowing Josiah, too. I mean, you know, he doesn't talk a whole lot, pretty quiet kids.
Starting point is 00:10:13 So even I would, you know, just seeing him being out going like that and showing interest, I can understand. Ryan, did you go on visits? Like when you were, you know, trying to figure out where you. you wanted to play college baseball? We did go to Kentucky Wesleyan, and we went to, I think my mom and dad, we went to Indiana Central. Of course, it's now I-U-P-U-I, I think now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:31 It changed the name of it, and it was Indian-Indiana Central at the time. I just remember, that was it. I remember doing like a trip to like Campbellsville and Lindsay Wilson. And I never knew, like, what to ask the coach. Like, do you have any questions? I'm like, no. You know, it was always, like, awkward. So that's good that he was actually asking questions.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Yeah. You know, leaning on you to do all the talking. Asking questions that I wouldn't think to ask. I heard him ask one time, like, when did you guys finally doing the spread offense? Oh, look at this. Wow. You know, how many receivers do usually play a game? Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:03 You know, things like that. How's the NIL bucket? Do you ask that? No. I don't know. Mount St. Joseph has a very deep NIL bucket. Basebar can be involved if we need to. It's way up on the west side of Cincinnati, way up on the hill.
Starting point is 00:11:15 So it's beautiful out there. You know, sits right on the river. You can look across the river, and there's Kenton County right across the river over there. We've got somebody here from Kenton County today. Right here, just drove down. That's right. So you might want him to put it out. Do you have any feel?
Starting point is 00:11:28 We've got top three you really announced or any graphics being made? Like I said, hats on the table? He doesn't talk. And as we're walking to the car, he starts talking like, dad, low-key. I got a tough decision now. I don't know. I really like Hanover, but I really like this visit today. So which one does Daddy Ryan like?
Starting point is 00:11:46 These coaches are listening. I could not predict right now what he's going to pick. I seriously don't know. Give the stock answer if you're just going to let him make his decision. Everyone respect it. It's the kid's decision, you know. There's no eye and lemon, you know. You play it one game at a time.
Starting point is 00:12:02 There's a me. There's backwards a little bit. We're a little Heartland conference radio here. We've named more Hartland schools in this first segment than maybe ever in the history of KSA. So that's our two stories. We got up Kobe Napier's my guy. Sorry it slipped by mind, Colby. He was the leading score.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Hit the big three. He was a lot of fun to watch. So we told our two stories. If you heard the KSR pre-show this morning, Shannon was whining and crying for like 15 minutes about what happened to him last night, Shannon. You were like, I didn't get any sleep. Is that your impersonation of me? That's my impersonation of Shannon.
Starting point is 00:12:35 You got to work on your impersonations. You don't do a good Joe Biden. You don't do a good me. Yeah, you're right, though. Cranky Shannon's here today. The last 30 hours, I think I've slept about 45 minutes, thanks to a really bad decision of mine to accept a role to play an extra in a movie that was filmed in Louisville. And I immediately regretted it when I showed up and realized this is going to go on for a long time.
Starting point is 00:12:58 You know, I showed up thinking, all right, this may go on for three, four hours. I'll be out of here by midnight. It'll be fun. Get to do a little background acting. No. Like, again, like you just said, if you want to hear the full rant, I would highly suggest you go listen to the KSR pre-show on podcast later today. but long story short Ryan I was there and midnight comes and goes and then it's 1 a.m. and then it's 2 and then it's 3 and then it's 4 a.m. until they wrapped this thing and I'm going what do I do at this point?
Starting point is 00:13:27 I'm normally up at 5.30 in the morning Ryan and it's 4.30 right now. So do I go home? Do I sleep in my car? What do I do? I decided to drive all the way back home, laid down for maybe 45 minutes, got right back up and then showed up back here at the radio station. and I am dragging my butt right now. Like, I am tired. I may fall asleep at the wheel. So if this thing goes off the air, that's what happened. I fell asleep. Just a warning to our callers today, Drew.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Cranky Shannon may be answering the phone. Just be ready. Hey, I think that's good radio. He may put you on. He may decide not to put you on. Hey, this, I was telling Billy, do you know who, like, these actors are, like Bill Scargard, the guy that played Pennywise and the new it movie? Did you see that one, Ryan?
Starting point is 00:14:09 Drew? I did see the new it movie, but I was. I don't know who that guy is. I don't know who that guy is. He's kind of scary looking, even without having the Pennywise stuff on, right? Yeah. He's a freaky looking guy. Then Kerry Elwood, who I was telling Drew, is in the movie Saul, which you said.
Starting point is 00:14:23 We were talking off the air. You've seen that. Oh, yeah. He's in the Prince's Bride. He's in Robin Hood. Men with Tights. I feel like that's one Ryan has seen. Oh, I love Robin Hood Minotites.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Oh, I saw that. Did you say, A. Blinking. I try to have seen that. I have a man who you're talking about that. I have a Shannon movie question. This isn't your first time doing this extra role. Are you trying to climb the ladder? Is this your path to Hollywood, or is this a little hobby?
Starting point is 00:14:50 Just add more to your resume. You know, I don't really know why I said yes. It just felt like something it would be fun to do. So, yeah, I mean, in theory, yeah, next time I'm going to tell them, don't call me unless you got a speaking roll for me. Because this background stuff's where the birds. I don't want to do this anymore. I don't think that's the way you climb the ladder in Hollywood, though. You know, I think you've got to go read for parts.
Starting point is 00:15:10 So maybe instead of doing background work, I'll just maybe go try to read for a part next time. So I have a speaking role. Well, I heard you say you have on like a stripper cop police officer, a uniform. Not a stripper. No, they wanted me to be a state trooper. I said, oh, that sounds fun. I get to go put on a uniform. Like a sexy state trooper?
Starting point is 00:15:30 No, no, no. Or just a regular one? No, like a night. This was from like the 70s. This is like an old school, 1977, like Indiana State Trooper uniform. Did you post a picture of it? I did. Yeah, I posted a bathroom selfies.
Starting point is 00:15:42 See, they're really, they're like, they don't want you to take pictures on the set or anything like that, but I got to go sneak a picture, right? The only place I could sneak a picture was this nasty bathroom that was a dirty bathroom mirror, and I go, at least I'll have a picture to share with everybody of me and my uniform. Wow. Yeah, that's authentic. That's not like, that's not Halloween Express. That's the real deal.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I mean, it's props. I had a gun. I had a little billy club. If things got out of hand, I could just whack somebody with my billy club. I had cuffs. the whole thing, a little badge, the hat? Do I look official? Much more official than I expected when you sent me to look at that photo.
Starting point is 00:16:19 I would pull over if you told me to. Is there anything you would stay up until 4.30 in the morning for? Shannon stays up until 4.30 in the morning to be an extra in a movie. Is there anything you'd stay up until 4.30 in the morning for? Nothing we could say on the air probably. Those are the activities Shannon keeps to himself. I have a hard time making it until. 11 o'clock these days.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Oh, my God. Yeah, I'm just saying I will never do that again. If you ever get the opportunity, don't take it. Don't do it. It's not nearly as glamorous as you think movies. It's going to be, you know, Hollywood and glamour. No, it's a whole lot of hurry up and wait, standing around. It's awful.
Starting point is 00:16:56 The Mounty Hat really sets it off, though. I didn't expect the hat. That's what got me. Yeah. All right, before we go to commercial break, we do need to just mention the tragic mid-air collision that happened in Washington, D.C. It happened late last night, an army helicopter ran into a small jet.
Starting point is 00:17:14 They announced today there are no survivors, so it's a recovery effort at this point. It also came out this morning that they were members of the United States figure skating team on the plane that were in Wichita. The plane originated from Wichita. They were in Wichita, I think, for the nationals for flying back to their homes or a training center or something. So it's just awful, Drew. It's just awful. There's video of it actually happening.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Of course there'll be all kinds of investigations, see what's going on, but it's sad, and our prayer goes out to all those families. Yeah, so tragic. I mean, we unfortunately have too many tragedies, and sadly, we get a little immune to them, but that made me sick to my stomach last night. That's awful, and I was thinking, like, you're about to land. Like, you have people parked to pick you up. I saw an interview with the guy whose wife was texting him. I can't believe they interviewed him, but he was at the airport waiting. I mean, that is just absolutely awful.
Starting point is 00:18:05 And I don't know how it happened, but they're going to figure that out. We'll probably even have some major changes to aviation. A guy sitting here told him there's a story come out where one of the figure skaters didn't miss get on the plane because of his dog. So he wasn't allowed on that plane. So, you know, now he's got to live with that because knowing these teammates were on the plane and he was supposed to be on the plane. That could almost be just as bad. Almost just as bad, yeah. So keep that, keep everybody in your prayers there.
Starting point is 00:18:31 All right, well, take our break. Come back. Go to the phone lines, 859-280-2287. It is Ask Anything Thursday. Ryan Drew and Shannon. and this is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.

Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source,
Starting point is 00:18:57 the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. SportsSlice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:19:25 And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is CliverTaylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:19:48 Carderback on office blue 42. Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, Fam, this is Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
Starting point is 00:20:39 he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying.
Starting point is 00:20:55 He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the, I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:21:12 American Soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on the only score at the chip. I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, inside American soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan.
Starting point is 00:21:37 I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. You're going to look at stats and numbers. He has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
Starting point is 00:21:58 The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. All right, welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio, Ryan Drew and Shane. Is that echoing now, Shannon? I don't hear any echoes. Sounds like it is in here.
Starting point is 00:22:21 You don't? Okay. Good. No. All right. We set a speaker up in here so they can hear Shannon since Matt's not here. You have a good crowd in here. Really good crowd in here.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Oh, look at this. Ah, look at that. You got a pop. You got the pop. Look at you. 859-2802-287. That's our phone number for Ask Anything Thursday. Coach Pope did do his coach's show last night.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Said some really interesting things. We're going to play some of them throughout the show. What was your biggest takeaway from listening to what he had to say last night? I fully expected him to tell us not to boo, and he kind of didn't say that. He was like, it's competition. It is what it is. I mean, he said very nice things about Cal and how grateful he is and how grateful Kentucky is. But then when it came to the actual fan reaction, he kind of was like, whatever.
Starting point is 00:23:06 I'm kind of with you. I kind of thought maybe he would tell us to honor respect and honor Coach Cow the right way and not boo him. But he basically said something like, look, they'll come a day where we'll be able to recognize all the greatness he did here. maybe Saturday's not that day. It is still a game. Do you want me to play the clip? You've got it? You sent it to me.
Starting point is 00:23:25 Okay, I didn't know if he already had it. I didn't see it. He is shanky-cranking today. Cranky Shannon. No, I mean, you can quote him if you want to or I can play it. It's whatever you have. Let's play it. He said it better than we would.
Starting point is 00:23:36 This is courtesy of the UK Sports Network and JMI. He has been blessed at the University of Kentucky to have some of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game of basketball. And certainly Cal is one of those. He's a Hall of Fame coach. In his 15-year, 10-year, what he accomplished at the University of Kentucky was incredible. He, in some ways, he revolutionized the game of college basketball. He's left a legacy that probably won't be ever reproduced in the same way that he did it.
Starting point is 00:24:06 And, you know, as a member of BBN and a huge fan of Kentucky basketball, my whole heart is here. I love Cal. I love Cal for what he did for Kentucky basketball. on a very personal level, he's been, he's been so great to Leanne and I as a mentor and a friend. And so, you know, it's a little bit of a complicated relationship right now because he's coaching the other team. And so that always makes it complicated. But, you know, I know that, I know BVN, man. I just know our fan base.
Starting point is 00:24:40 And I know there will be all kinds, there should be so much emotion because we care so much. So there will be so much emotion in the gym on Saturday. day. And as time goes on and circumstances change, there's going to be a time when Cal walks back into this arena and he is going to feel all of the love that BBN possibly has to offer because that's what we do with our family. I think that's probably the best answer he could probably give. You know, honor the guy, respect the guy, he did great things here. I know, but he said something. We're an emotional fan base. Of course we're going to care when our coach leaves. and goes coach's arrival. Of course it means something to us when we want to when he walks into the
Starting point is 00:25:25 building. So I know you guys talked a lot about it yesterday. If I was in the building, I probably wouldn't do anything. I wouldn't boo him, but I wouldn't clap for him either. But here's the question. What about if Kentucky wins by 30 and he's walking off the floor and he kind of waves to the crowd? How do you react then? You just kicked his butt. If we won by 30, I don't care what you do. Yeah, I could see that. I let my Opinions known yesterday. Frank Franklin even came out for a minute. I heard about that.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Pope kind of said it a little bit, too. I want John Caliperi to be honored. We should name something after him. He should have a banner. I hope one day he gets to come to rub, make him the while. We'll have a party. But Saturday, he's not that guy coming here. He is Arkansas's coach coming here.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I don't have. I'm not booing, but I have no problem with booing, and I fully expect people to boo. He is coming to beat Kentucky. What's wrong with booing that? It's sports. We're not booing his character. We're booing him because he's walking in wearing an Arkansas shirt.
Starting point is 00:26:23 I guess Cal also talked to the media last night. One, surprised he did that. Thought he would send Kenny Payne or Chin Coleman or somebody. And there was a point where I think he even kind of choked up and said something like, it is going to be an emotional. You know, I have a lot of great memories there. It's one of the best times of my life there. He's got some dear friends here.
Starting point is 00:26:42 So I hear that, and it doesn't make me want to beat his brains in his bad on the basketball court because he was such. I mean, he did miraculous things here for a long time. Well, two things that change it a little bit. One, he really, to his credit, hasn't thrown any jabs in public. Now, stuff's come out that he's told recruits, you know, he moved headquarters. That was really dumb. And Kentucky fans didn't like that.
Starting point is 00:27:07 But if you're in a kid's living room and you're trying to get him, you've got to say something. Yeah. But in press conferences and like the coaches show where he said that earlier in the week, I think he has a press conference today. He really has been nothing but grateful. So I think that helps a little. Also, I think it helps that they suck. I mean, if they'd come in here undefeated, that's completely different than them coming in here with one win.
Starting point is 00:27:25 I mean, flip the script, you can almost be a little sympathetic to how bad they are, and I don't think anyone expected one in five. Because when the schedule came out this summer, when everybody saw that game, Arkansas at Kentucky, February 1st, you circle it in your big blue marker and know that's the game of the year. I think we thought one reason why Arkansas was going to be a lot better. They're not very good. They may be the worst team in the SEC right now. Does that play into it at all? I could see someone that was ready to boo in November, countdown of the date being like,
Starting point is 00:27:57 this is going to be weird now. They're terrible. I'm just piling on. People are still going to boo. The Patino clip went viral yesterday. I didn't have memory of that. You were there. Holy crap, they booed.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Everyone was booing. That made me think Saturday is going to be pretty bad. That Patino blew my mind. I didn't have a memory of it being that bad. I was there. It was without a doubt. the best pregame environment ever. I don't even think this Saturday is going to surpass it.
Starting point is 00:28:23 Patino's first trip back to Rupp Arena as a coach of Louisville Cardinals, when he comes out the wrong entrance, walks out there, it was unbelievable. That's why I've seen that. I think Cal is he's getting it. But whatever, it's a basketball game. We're trying to win, trying to create a hostile environment. We'll be right back. Take your calls.
Starting point is 00:28:39 859-2802-287. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome back.
Starting point is 00:28:54 It's Ryan, Drew and Shannon here. Is Matt on the disabled list this morning? He'll get some rest. Feel better because we need him for Friday. Tomorrow we're at Whiskey Thief and Nulu. And, of course, Saturday is the big Kentucky Arkansas game. I got this text message on. You can text the text machine, but if you got my cell phone, we're going to use that as a text machine today, Drew.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Is that all right? Yeah, give him the number. Okay, the guy's, no, that's okay. If Cal is smart, he walks out with Ellen, and that would almost ensure no booze. No, that's Cowher. It's harder to boo her than Cal. We're not using a human shield. Ellen is not a prop.
Starting point is 00:29:27 Don't boo Ellen. I feel bad for Ellen. But we are not using Ellen Calipari as a prop to a shield for him to walk out onto the court. If you're going to the game tomorrow, the main advice I can give you is go early. Traffic is going to be a nightmare. Parking is already a nightmare. Everybody wants to be there in their seats when he walks out of the tunnel. That's going to be the highlight of the game maybe.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Get there early. Come here to KS Bar. You do a little tailgating and then go down early. And if you're really, really like to be like Shannon and stay up all night, UK hockey has a midnight match, game, match. Hockey game. Game. They have a game at the Lexington Ice Center at midnight.
Starting point is 00:30:10 UK basketball ended at 11. Well, no, this year 1130 because monitors. Go straight over the ice center and catch UK hockey. I mean, how about that for a double header? They picked a good night to do that. Yeah, I love that was intentional. A home game at late at night. We have a late tip off.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Game will end up late. Everyone will all of the fans want to celebrate. You want to have a victory party. Go to the UK hockey game and you can have your victory party there. Absolutely. I wish I got to do a little work after the game. If not for that, I'd be over there too. 859-2-287.
Starting point is 00:30:37 That's our phone number. And listen, callers, we're warning you. We've got cranky Shannon today. No, please. Stop it. Be nice. Use your manners. Everybody use your manners.
Starting point is 00:30:44 Who we got, Shannon. Let's go to Corey. Corey, go ahead, Corey. Hey, what's going on, guys? How are we all? I'm doing good. I've got a couple things. First, not enough of the fans call in and give the girls' team a lot of love.
Starting point is 00:30:59 So good luck to them tonight against Alabama. That's going to be a good game, Alabama's ranked. And second, I've got to give my wife a shout out. So she's a die-hard Louisville fan. BBM, forgive me for that one. but for my birthday, my birthday the same day as Angeley Almanors, and she got me tickets to the game. And having said that, I think I got to boo.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Because, like, how many years did we spend booing Patino? And it's no different. Anyone that booed Patino and saying don't boo Cal, you're being a hypocrite. Corey, we appreciate it. Thanks with the phone call. He's right. There'll be a day where we can march Cal out, put his name up in the rafters, and celebrate what he did here.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Saturday is not that day. Saturday he's coaching an opposing team and an important SEC game that we have to win in the rest of our games at home. So yes, if the fans want to boo, I'm not going to tell fans what to do. They have the right to do whatever they want, but it is still a basketball game,
Starting point is 00:31:58 and he's on the opposing bench. It's very easy for me. The John Caliperi that won us all those games is not coming here on Saturday. The Arkansas John Calipari is coming here. We're booing that version of him. And I just think there's a fundamental difference with people in booing.
Starting point is 00:32:12 I've talked to friends. They're like, I can't believe people would boo. And I'm thinking, I can't believe you get upset about booing. It's a basketball game. It's part of the environment. People get booed all the time. We literally, after every player on the other team, they say their name, the student section yells sucks.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Like, that's not personal. It's part of having a home court advantage. I don't have any problem with booing. Me and you booed it bingo. That's true. We boot a bingo in here. It's not that serious. Like, some people are acting like you would spit in cow's face if you boo.
Starting point is 00:32:41 I think it's just Rupp Arena creating an environment to win a basketball game. I don't think it's that complicated of a situation. Had somebody sent me a message and said, hey, nobody booed when Tubby Smith walked back in for the first time. It's a little different. High point. High point. Several years later. Several years later.
Starting point is 00:32:57 Very different. Tubby's on the downside of his career, much different. Tubby didn't sit with Mitch Barnhart and say, look at us. We're the best. I'm not going anywhere. And then left two days later. But when Rick Patino walks out, he got the booze, and Cal will have the same on Saturday. Who's next, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:33:12 Devin. Devin. Go ahead, Devin. Hey, guys. I wanted to talk about how the fans react to Cal on Saturday. I'm not going to the game, but for the people who are going, who are undecided on how they're going to react, I think I've got a fourth option, because it seems like everything I've heard, everybody thinks there's only three options, right? Clap, boo, or stay silent.
Starting point is 00:33:37 But there is a secret option number four. and it is physically possible to boo and clap at the same time. So for the people who are undecided, I don't know if that is a realistic thing to do, but I think there's some good reasons that people might choose to do that. One, it perfectly captures what most of the fanbakes thinks and feels about cow, right? We're conflicted, so who says we can't act conflicted?
Starting point is 00:34:05 Two, it's exactly what we want for this game, right? it would be chaos. It would be wild, and that's the kind of environment that we want, right? And three, and I think the best reason is it's a power of these guys. Like, it makes the game about the fans, not about Cal. The media, if everybody clapped and booed at the same time, nobody would be talking about Cal. They'd all be talking about Bigley Nation.
Starting point is 00:34:30 All right, Devin. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. The booze, I think, would drown out the claps almost. You could probably see people clapping. But you won't feel guilty. You're canceling yourself out. Canceling yourself out.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Mentally, you're doing that for mentally not make you feel guilty for booing the guy that we revered for so long. I think this is the whiskey thief idea of the day. I love this. You can boo your heart out while clapping as hard as you can. You'll be no guilt. It's like even, it's like you're doing nothing. And it will just create a louder environment. I'm all for the clap boo.
Starting point is 00:35:00 Is that possible? Like you can't rub your stomach and pat your head, right? Isn't that a thing? You can boo and clap? Yeah, that's no problem. Yeah. Boo! Yeah, you can do that.
Starting point is 00:35:08 I'm all in on clap and boo. I might even clap and boo. I was going to do nothing. He might have talked to me into clap boo. There will be people that will clap when not boo. Because, you know, they're welcome him back. And like I said, they'll come a day we can do that for him. Yeah, you're just a neutral party.
Starting point is 00:35:24 It's like a house divided when they go vote. You could just stay at home. You just cancel each other out. If you clap and boo, you're just, you don't matter. You're nothing. What if you're somebody like Brandy Romine to the cake lady and your best friend is Ellen Calopary, but you're a die-hard Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:35:37 diehard fan. I love Brandy. She's been in a tough spot because Ellen's her best friend. She even went to an Arkansas game recently. But if you follow her on social media, we know what color she's still wearing. She's all blue. Yeah, you're not changing Brandy from the 606. Who's next, Shannon? Let's go to Ben. Ben, go ahead, Ben. Hey, guys, I'll give a little bit of a opposing view to the boo. Originally, I started out even earlier this week that I would have booed him if I would have been there. But the more I've thought about it the last few days. I'll give you two points that maybe are contrary to that. You tell me what you think. Number one, the first is I don't really understand the argument that
Starting point is 00:36:16 people are using taboo in the fact that he left us and that they hold resentment for that. Well, if we're honest with ourselves, we wanted him gone and he left and we might not like the way he left, but at the end of the day, we all know that if he had stayed, we probably would hold more resentment for him right now because our season would probably be. going the way Arkansas is, then if he had left. So it's kind of contradictory to me that we would hold it against somebody that did something that we ultimately wanted to do. It's like breaking up with you and your girlfriend breaking up mutually and then telling
Starting point is 00:36:51 her she can't date anybody for a while. Well, that's just not the way it works. And number two, I guess I don't really have a problem with people doing them. I know it's not personal. It's just a sport. So boo him if you want. But at the end of the day, we keep using this thing that, well, there will be a day that John Calgary will come back and he'll get his flowers.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Well, not to make this extremely, you know, more important than it is, but we don't all, we don't know that that day will come. Things happen. Life takes a turn. Bad things happen to people. And maybe he won't get that day. Maybe he will. We all hope he will.
Starting point is 00:37:24 I think he will. We take that for granted that that's going to happen. I'm just saying something could happen to the man or something could happen, and he never gets that. So we keep saying that like it's a certainty. Maybe it's not. appreciate phone call, Ben. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:38 I mean, after time goes by, you know, they'll do the right thing, especially if Pope is still here at the moment. He will want to do the right thing. But when you're coaching an opposing team in the conference, you do what your heart tells you to do, man. And not all booze are going to be created equal. Some people are going to boo because they spent $30,000 on a suite at the SEC tournament and saw one game that was a loss.
Starting point is 00:38:02 People like that that travel spent lots of money the last two years are upset. Some people are going to boo because they're mad how he left. Some people are going to boo because they never liked him. And then people that I think is the reason you should boo, is what I'm saying is you're just booing him because he's there as the Arkansas coach. None of that other stuff is attached to your boo. You're booing because you're in Rupp Arena. I go back to after they lost to Texas A&M in the SEC tournament, we were standing right there. And that, as Cal is walking off the court, that lady leans over the railing and just screaming at him. Is this the gold standard, Cal? Is this what the gold standard is all about?
Starting point is 00:38:33 Is this just screaming at him about that? Yeah, and this will, if they boo Saturday, it would be the third time he's been booed because he got booed then and he got booed after Oakland. It's not like this is new. He's already felt that Big Blue Nation's upset a little bit, at least with the people that traveled to those games. 859-2-287. Pope did get his still of approval last night on the Mountain Mamba nickname. Best part of the show.
Starting point is 00:38:55 For Trent Noah. You didn't hear yesterday, but we had a second option. Sweet Mountain Baby Angel. That's not good. I don't know. No, that's the best one. What are you talking about? You can't call a young man sweet baby.
Starting point is 00:39:10 I can call them anything that we want to. Yeah, come on. What if you're going to send down from God on a cloud, Ron? I like Mountain Mamba, but sweet baby face, Mamba, whatever it was, is awful. Sweet Mountain Angel, baby. It was neat here in Pope endorsed Mountain Mamba. It's just another thing where he's proven he's one of us. That's right.
Starting point is 00:39:28 Anything the fan base is latching on to, he's like, yeah, that's cool. I'm in. Mountain Mamba sounds great. I still would have wished he would have picked Sweet Mountain Baby Angel. Mountain, what is it? Sweet Mountain Baby Angel, Baby. And Trit, Noah's going to get more minutes to keep playing the way he's been playing. I think even after the game, Coach Pope said he was his perfect role to come off the bench and do exactly.
Starting point is 00:39:46 He did hit a couple shots, play good defense, dive on the floor after loose balls. That's his perfect. The perfect role. Even if he hadn't hit that shot from Harlan there at the logo, just his hustle, I think, has given him enough moving forward for more minutes. Going back, I know they lost it, Vandy, but he was the only. only one going after loose balls there for a while. 859-2-8-7. That's our phone number.
Starting point is 00:40:07 We'll take our break, come back, get you lined up here. I've also got a little trivia question for the guys. We did the show this summer. I asked you guys some trivia questions. I didn't give you the homework because you've got to be off the top of your head. We don't do homework. We'll do all that. A lot more coming up here on Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:40:21 Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama,
Starting point is 00:40:47 the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:41:15 And on my podcast, The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better.
Starting point is 00:41:37 What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. American soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart the Chip. I'm Tab Ramos.
Starting point is 00:42:07 I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American, soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions.
Starting point is 00:42:22 If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World
Starting point is 00:42:37 Cup is almost here. Experience at all, with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano, and our podcast's point game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:43:20 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night bases on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:43:38 That man, hell get to fly. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball, like, You go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Adi boy, Shan. I appreciate you playing that. Greatest song ever recorded the history of music.
Starting point is 00:44:01 Ryan Lim and Drew Franklin, Shannon, the dude here on Kentucky Sports Radio. I wanted to ask you, well, sorry, I didn't mean to cut you out there. I was going to ask you, will you be performing the song Toppolis in Nashville with us again this year? If Shannon the dude and Alice Blue Gown is on stage and they crank this song up, I absolutely will jump on stage with you. We'll be there. We've already got it in the books. Thursday of the SEC tournament, 530 to 930, depending on if Kentucky's playing, we're going to be playing at 10 Roof Broadway again. So if Kentucky's playing during that time, will they float you guys? Yeah, probably so.
Starting point is 00:44:34 I don't think it would probably be a wise idea to play during the Kentucky game. So the time is still kind of tentative, but. I guess it's the 13th, whatever that Thursday is. March 13th, yeah, March 13th. Shannon the dude and Alice Bluegown in action down in Broadway in Nashville. There, you know, there are many reasons to buy beef directly from the farm versus the grocery store, which is why you need to check out Noche Linda Farms. The environment the cows raised in is much cleaner and safer than commercial raised beef from feed lots.
Starting point is 00:45:03 Farm raised beef from Nochalinda Farm is free from antibiotics and hormones. When you buy from Nochalinda, a Kentucky proud partner, you are supporting local businesses. Lastly, noce Linda beef is dry age for 24 days. This makes the product significantly more tender and flavorful than when you can buy at the store. Visit nochelindafarms.com. And Shannon, I have got not one, but two deliveries of Noce Linda Farm beef to give to you now, because they brought some more this week. Well, I wish you would bring it to you.
Starting point is 00:45:29 You've been hoarding my beef. You said you've had it for six months. It's probably a freezer burn at this point, but that's okay. We'll just bring it on over tomorrow. We're going to be all together in Louisville at Whiskey Thief. You can bring my meat. it's going to be okay and it's been in my freezer for like six months it's fine bring it six months yeah that's all right it's what the freezer's for
Starting point is 00:45:47 oh yeah i ain't mine oh yeah i ain't mine did you eat mine no yours is still in the bag in my freezer okay we'll see i don't know if i believe he's got one left 8592802 287 who's our next call andy Andy Andy go ahead Andy hey first time long time how y'all guys doing this morning appreciate you calling Andy hey uh so quick question of all the three former players that are coming in tomorrow big z the arrow and the wagner who do you think would have most benefited by staying back and playing with coach pope great question andy appreciate the phone call i think there's one obvious answer and it's big z
Starting point is 00:46:30 no doubt to play in pope's system a big who can step out and hit the hit the jumper hit the shot hit the shot yeah the shot yeah do we need to dump that it is big z i agree with you and He played well recently, but there was a stretch where he wasn't playing much at all at Arkansas. And I was thinking, this poor guy, we're going to have to put up free Big Z signs again. I think he would have been great with Pope with the way he runs. But I also think Adieu would have been pretty fun, especially putting him at the four. You know, he's playing so well at Arkansas, bulked up even more.
Starting point is 00:46:59 I really wanted the dude to stay. I know he was already gone before Pope got here, but I've always liked to do. Adieu announced he was leaving him before Cal did. Yeah. And then he ends up going back with Cal at Arkansas. That was a little strange. Yeah, I don't know what happened there. It makes you wonder if Kentucky was the issue, but I really don't know.
Starting point is 00:47:17 DJ Wagner has now have to play point guard full-time with the boogie flan out the injury. But, of course, you know, if college stayed, you'd have Boogie Flan, Billy Richmond, Carter Knox, in addition to Adieu, Big Z, and DJ. Wouldn't that be fun? DJ, I'm looking forward to having him back, too. But on a basketball note, Kentucky needs Lamont Butler back to give D.J. And Nellie Davis some problems. Any thoughts on if we'll see him Saturday or not?
Starting point is 00:47:43 I'm a little confused with Mark Pope right now. I thought Andrew Carr was out for 10 years when he was talking after the Vandy game, and then four days later we saw him. So even when Pope did the if Butler's back, I kind of thought, well, we just did this with Carr. So I don't know. I don't know what to make of it. His stuff is retweeted and other stuff is promising that it's just kind of a bruised shoulder,
Starting point is 00:48:04 but I don't know. But I hope it's Saturday. Yeah, I don't think he's out long-term, but still short-term. I don't know how much he'll get to play Saturday. And he had the video with. where he popped on Brandon Garrison's Instagram said I'll be back after the win at Tennessee. 859-2-807. Who's next, Shannon? David.
Starting point is 00:48:21 David. Go ahead, David. Hey, I hope the cats take more three-point shots Saturday than Arkansas. I think if they do that, they'll probably win. And then I have another option, which I think is better than option for the fans. And then when Calgary first comes out, you know, people cheer or do nothing, but don't boo. But then they introduce him as their coach, boo all you want. And I think that clarifies, you know, we're booing the opponent's coach. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:48:51 I like that. Wait for the official announcement. Yeah. So not necessarily when it walks out during all the videos, the pomp and circumstance, the music that's going on. But when they announce and the head coach of the University of Arkansas. Right. Right after the players were announced.
Starting point is 00:49:06 Yeah. Okay. Appreciate it. Thank you, man. Appreciate the phone call. I like the idea, but getting 20,000 people on the same page is important. possible. People will boo. But I do like that where you're letting them know. As I keep saying, I'm not booing old cow. I'm booing present day. You're in Fayetteville, Cald, Cal, it would make it a little
Starting point is 00:49:22 clear if they did wait until the moment. They said Arkansas head coach John Caliperi. But I think some people that have already made it clear, they're traveling just to boo. They're going to be a little antsy. So now the spotlight falls on Patrick Widmer, the PA announcer. You're putting the pressure on him. I'm putting the pressure on Patrick. Now, how's he going to announce Caliper? Because he used to really blare the name, John Calapry. You know, now what's he say? You can't do that now. You can't give on the pomp and circumstance
Starting point is 00:49:47 now that he's the visiting coach. You've got to just, you know, John Colopery. Maybe some Liam Cohen energy out of him. Or he could say everyone, hold your booze until we announce him as the Arkansas coach. Well, I was proud of the way Pope answered the question. It's going to happen. As long as they win the game, I don't really care.
Starting point is 00:50:07 They have to win that game. Everyone, not just us. Everyone is talking about boo, not to boo. UK blog, podcast, Twitter account. They're all talking about booing. Let's not get lost. We need to win this day. There's still a game you have to win.
Starting point is 00:50:20 Absolutely. And Cal's going to talk today in Arkansas, and as you said, Pope said good things. I fully expect Cal to say nothing but the right things when we hear from him for the last time before the game. Now, yesterday I guess Matt talked about the awful announcing article that he is involved. He ended up tweeting that out last night. So it wasn't out during the show yesterday, but it's out now. If you guys want to try to check that out and maybe go see it here during the break. But go to his Twitter account, and you can see you. He's got a couple links there to it.
Starting point is 00:50:46 Kind of got a little Greenberg mat angle in there. I think so. I think he talks about, don't tell us how we're supposed to cheer. Don't tell us what we're supposed to think. Yeah, he's not taking shots of Greenberg. He's saying, these national opponents don't live here. Why do we have to listen to you? Yeah, yeah. It's perfect. What he's been saying here on the show for weeks now. But it is a good interview on awful announcing.com. Check it out. All right. 859-2-2-287. That's our phone number if you want to call and get on board. We'll get ready to take our break. Come back. Got a nice crowd here on a Thursday afternoon, Drew. Yeah. At KS. Bar and Grill.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Look at this applause. Our pregame show Saturday will begin at 630. Correct. 630 to 7.30, we tip off at 9. Going to be a lay one. If I can stay up to the end of it, it should be a good one. All right back. I'll stay up for that one.
