Starting point is 00:03:01 and a very impressive place that I've never been to, and we are here all day. You give us a shout to Clark's puppet shop phone line 859-280-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-744 in this edition. It's sponsored by the TJ Smith-laws. If you call T.J. he'll make them pay. We are here because the Kentucky State Police are encouraging you, those of you that are listeners, trying to figure out, okay, what am I going to do with my life? Why don't you consider becoming a Kentucky State police officer?
Starting point is 00:03:31 or this is the training academy. You can learn more at join ksp.com. Guys, I have been around, Ryan, the Kentucky State Police, my entire, most of my life. You know, my mom was a prosecutor in Bell County. She worked with the state police forever. I see PJ Burnett back there who worked with my mom for a number of years. That was a surprise to get to see this morning. She loved him over the years.
Starting point is 00:03:58 I won't compliment you to your face. but that's a name I've heard a lot. And, you know, I would see the officers in our lives growing up. And, you know, I never had been here, which is where they learn all the things needed in a 24-week program to become an officer. And they gave us a tour earlier. Not only is this the place where you learn and there's all this, you know, all this equipment. I don't know that I realized they lived here. We went back to where they sleep in their quarters.
Starting point is 00:04:29 and Ryan, it's been very cool to be here at the Police Academy. I didn't even know this place existed, and then you pull up and, like, now I'm way into it. I mean, this is really cool. They've got 35 cadets here right now, training, and, yeah, we just saw a couple of guys at their desk studying, getting ready to. It threw me off, Shannon, we walked in, and I guess part of what they do, and they teach is when an officer or somebody that does the training comes about, they, like, stand at attention. Right. And, you know, treat them with respect. but it shows my, I guess, arrogance that I thought they were doing that for me.
Starting point is 00:05:02 And I wanted to look at the guy and go, hey, it's good. You don't have to worry about it. We're all good. And then I was like, oh, it's for those guys. Okay, there you. That is such a Matt Jones moment. They walk in and they're saluting them. They immediately didn't salute.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Like they're bowing down to Matt. They really stood up like that. And I was like, man, I got a hoodie on. You're totally good. That's great. But very cool place here, Drew. Yeah, I've been very interested in all of it. We got the tour.
Starting point is 00:05:24 Probably going to stay after and see. more and also it just you know seeing the tributes to fallen soldiers the statue out front of McNeely it really gives you more of an appreciation too not that I don't already have it but seeing here and what everyone gives to to serve it really makes you appreciate it well let me mention this because I think it's a very cool thing you guys do here in that room back there where the quarters are they have the pictures of all the Kentucky state police officers who have fallen in the line of duty at some point but not just that they have weights literally like the kind of weight you would lift weights to train that has the name of all of them.
Starting point is 00:05:58 And the officer that told us about it said, we have these weights so that the trainees are literally carrying the weights of those who've fallen before. What a strong reminder of what these folks do. And, you know, very symbolic, but also, you know, their pictures are all up. And I think probably a lot of times when something like that happens, we talk about it in the moment. there's usually a great tribute, but it's easy to think that a few weeks later, we all move on with our lives.
Starting point is 00:06:29 It's nice to see officers that look like going back to what, the 50s, 60s that were up there, going back a long time with their pictures up there. That's one of my biggest takeaways is how they're honoring the legacy of those other officers that have fallen and helped blaze the path that they're on today. So, yeah, those weights you're talking about, they said they never touch the ground. They will never let them touch the ground. It's really kind of cool. So let me tell you real quick before we get to game stuff.
Starting point is 00:06:53 You can apply online for cadet class 106, 106, Shannon, at joinksp.com. You have until March 14th. Let me give you a little bit about what happens if you go with KSP. You're starting pay $67,000 $500 a year. That's guaranteed raises. That's good. They don't even have to get up for the Jerry Eve show. That's right.
Starting point is 00:07:14 What other job gives you a guaranteed raise? Yeah, the excellent benefits, including a retirement program. You get an office with a View, which is a Dodge Charger or a Chevy Tiles. I don't have an office with a few now. You got that car. You driving around all the time because you don't have to pay for the gas. The law enforcement, and then if you are an officer, they have the law enforcement accelerated program, which is a 14-week academy. The regular academy is 24 weeks.
Starting point is 00:07:39 We'll be talking more about that. But what a cool thing. I didn't really know what we were coming to today, and so now it's really nice. When we gave us a tour of the barracks, it kind of said this used to be a prison. And then you can kind of see the cells that are not divided. Those are the dorms that these guys stay in. It's really kind of a cool setup. Should we put Ryan through the agility test later on today?
Starting point is 00:07:58 Negative. Bench press. Okay, so here's the agility test. You have a bench press. You have to do sit-ups for two-minute intervals. Ryan, you're out right there. Oh, I'm blowing up all over the place there. 300-meter sprint.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Now, you surprisingly used to be able to run. Yeah. You still? No. Okay. You have to do push-ups and a 1.5-mile run. Yeah, I don't know how much of that I would pass. I can do 50 miles.
Starting point is 00:08:24 I can do that 50 times over. You've shown that you can walk that far. Well, so yeah, we're here today. Nice to see all the officers here and some folks in the area. We are right in the midst of basketball season and getting ready tomorrow night. Kentucky goes to Austin, Texas, plays their first true road game at Texas in the history of the school. They've played them twice, but never played them on a true road game. It's at 8 o'clock on a massive day of college basketball.
Starting point is 00:08:50 We'll talk later. The number one and two teams in the country are playing each other tomorrow, but we will be the nightcap at 8 o'clock at Texas. No Jackson Robinson, no Lamont Butler, at least Drew, that's how I interpreted Mark Pope's comments yesterday. I would love to be surprised, but I'm not turning on my TV to tomorrow night expecting them to see them playing basketball. So can we win in Austin with arguably, if not our two most important?
Starting point is 00:09:19 I think they probably are our two most important players. Can we win on the road in that environment? Texas is struggling. They've lost, I think, four straight games. They've lost it home to Arkansas, home to Alabama. Can we continue that street tomorrow? You said it. Tennessee, I mean, Texas is going backwards.
Starting point is 00:09:36 They're not playing very well. And going into the season, I thought they were going to be a strong team in the SEC. So even though Kentucky's going down there kind of short-handed, we've seen them kind of rise to the occasion when they've had to play short-handed. And, you know, the last seven minutes of that Tennessee game, you played without Jackson Robinson and without Lamont. They were down three with seven minutes to go against the best defense in the country with essentially the lineup you're going to have, and you're right. It's going to be tough, especially on the road in that environment, but I think they can win tomorrow without them. The road is what I worry about because a version of that lineup played at Ole Miss and looked overwhelmed.
Starting point is 00:10:14 I mean, they looked overwhelmed and when the crowd got into it. Now, I don't know what the crowd is going to be like down there. I mean, I think it had been a normal, if they were good, I actually think the crowd would be wild since the first time we've been there,
Starting point is 00:10:28 but they are really sliding. So I don't know what it's going to be like. I'm not sure. I think Kentucky might have a good turnout. I went down there for the football game and had an absolute blast. And every Kentucky fan I ran into was already talking about how they were booked
Starting point is 00:10:42 for the basketball game, ready to run it back. So I think Kentucky will have a good crowd. And you're right about Texas. They're going the wrong direction. They were supposed to be a good team this year. And, I mean, what I've seen of them, I watched the whole Arkansas game. I mean, they played zero defense. Like, didn't even pretend to play defense.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Alabama scored 108 on them their last game at Austin. I don't know that Kentucky will score 108, but it's a good matchup. They don't force many turnovers. They don't rebound. It could be one where Kentucky can put up a lot of points, even without Robinson and Butler. So when Lamont Butler went out, it became clear that the scoring was not what we thought it would be, Ryan. I mean, it ended up being Kobe Brea at times directing the offense.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Obviously, Trent Noah was in the game. They did a whole lot of Amari Williams, like, driveling, and it weren't. They didn't turn it over. That's good. O.A. I mean, but it was a hodge-podge thing. I mean, what's the number you got to hit tomorrow? 75, 80.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Can you get to that number without Lamont? Butler and Jackson Robinson? Well, if Brea shoots the way he shot the other night, yes. You know, he's, a lot of this scoring now is going to fall on his shoulders. But is that what we are now? If Bray hits three, we may have. I think it is. Like we cannot have a one for eight shooting night from Braya and win the game tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:11:58 You can't. I kind of wonder, I do think on some level, Drew, you brought this up all year. Yep. But especially with Robinson and Butler out, there's a part of me that's like, if Bray hits threes, we can win. If he doesn't, we can't. I mean, is that kind of what you think? thing? Yeah, I feel like Groundhog Day making these predictions. But yeah, Bray has got to play well. And I think they're to the point. And this is why they beat Tennessee. We're really the freshman. Chandler, Noah, Perry. If you can get 10 to 15 points out of that group, they score 20 against Tennessee. But if they can score just to help you out a little bit, help that cushion with Robinson out. I think you're in a good spot. So if you're Texas, you just guard from the three point line out and let them have anything inside, I think, at that point. Because if you stop down, if you shut down Brea and Perry. If you were playing defense against us.
Starting point is 00:12:43 I mean, this would probably be true, even if you had Butler and Robinson, but I think it's certainly true with this group. I'm saying, y'all got to beat me at the rim. Like, I'm never doubling, okay? I'm never doubling. I'm making you not only beat me off the dribble, but I'm making you finish because we actually have a lot of guys that don't finish particularly well. I like Oway a lot.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Sometimes he'll dunk on your face, but he misses a lot of layups. So I'm probably, that's what I'm doing. I'm just saying you're not beating me from the three-point line. And you know what? If you can get to the rim on me and finish, then that, then congrats. And I think the teams that have had success against Kentucky have played exactly what you're talking about. Yeah, and it's weird to me that Tennessee doesn't play like that. Because they're great, but you're right.
Starting point is 00:13:27 I mean, you go back and think about Ole Miss. That's what Arkansas did. Yes. Arkansas said, all right, we got a lot of athletic guys. If you can score over them, congratulations. And we could. And I think that's what Texas will do tonight, which is a name we haven't mentioned yet. Andrew Carr will have to play well too.
Starting point is 00:13:42 He will. especially inside. So he's only been playing like 14 minutes a game. Do you think that's just because that's all he can play? It makes you wonder. He looks so good earlier in the year. I mean, he had a great career coming into this with great numbers in the ACC. So you know he's capable of it, but you just wonder how much that back issues lingering a little bit. But since he's been back, he still hasn't been to producing the way they need him to. So I think tomorrow night's game, he could be very helpful if he'd like to turn it on. So we're here at this Kentucky State Police Training Academy. You are sitting next to me, Shannon. I'm going over this with you.
Starting point is 00:14:13 When you think about coming to be a police officer, you think about being an officer on the street responding to calls. But there are other things. Which of these do you think you could do? Okay. In addition to being a trooper, you could be an aircraft pilot. Absolutely not. I would be terrified.
Starting point is 00:14:28 You know, I don't even like writing commercial, let alone flying something. You don't think you'd have more confidence if you were flying than when you go commercial? Absolutely not. So we'll scratch that one off. Special Response Team. I'm not sure what that means, but sounds like that. important. Like there's a riot going on. There's something going on. Respond. I think I can
Starting point is 00:14:46 handle some rioters. Canine handler. I'm out. I like dogs. I work well with dogs. Canine cam over there. Here's the thing. I understand that like in police officers, well, I know. I'm not going to say I understand. They treat like, you all treat those canons like they're like one of you. They're an officer. Yeah, they have a badge. Yeah. I mean, like when they die, like,
Starting point is 00:15:06 they have a funeral. I mean, it's a. I have a trading card over here. They even have a cams. What's the name? Oh, it's Cam. Cam. Cam. Cam. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:15 So I'm out on canine handler. You? I could do that. Yeah, I love dogs. Okay. Forensic or electronic crime investigator. Ooh, that's like some CSI type stuff. That's like that kind of thing I could do.
Starting point is 00:15:25 All right. That would be the thing I think would be the easiest for me. I'm not really out in about. Detective Jones. You're in the lab doing that kind of work. Yeah, I do that kind of stuff. Crash Reconstruction. No.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I don't know how to put anything back together. I can crash it. I don't think they can reconstruct it. I don't think they mean you literally put. the car back together. I think they mean like you're trying to figure out what happened by reconstructing the steep. I don't think you have to actually put it together. I still don't think I would be good at that one. You spent three days on that IKEA bed, so I know you can't put anything together. Yeah, and then Academy instructor or recruiter, which is some of the folks there. Okay, that would be fun. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:16:00 working with the up-and-comers recruiting. If you're an applicant, you must be 21 years old, but you can start the academy at the age of 20. So you can, you apply, but then you can actually start as long as you finished at 21 networks. You know, you've heard me tell the story. There was a time of my life. I was going to be a Kentucky State Trooper. Could you imagine? Officer Lemoned.
Starting point is 00:16:20 So, yeah, it would be interesting if you were an officer, because I think, like, you would be good at interacting with the public. I'm not sure if you'd be good at the rest of it. Let's start with making the bed. They got a pretty tight operation. Yeah. Oh, you weren't in there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:33 Okay, so at the bed, they give you your t-shirts, and you have to fold them six inches. Can't be six and a half inches. has to be six inches. Like the beds, that's nicer than my bed has ever been. Oh, my gosh. They would kick me out if they saw my bed. The sheets pulled back six inches, 18 inches from the wall.
Starting point is 00:16:50 Ryan, you got that? That's just starting your day. Yeah, getting through the academy may be the hardest part. And then once I get through it, I want the dog. I'm the canine guy. I don't think you just get to pet it and let it bark at you like you do your dog. Right. It rides around with you.
Starting point is 00:17:04 That dog isn't a lot better, like, trained than you're yapping. This dog, they said, can sniff out, cell phones. What does that mean? Like, I guess they're the... So you mean if we were to hide Billy's cell phone in here to where he couldn't find it, would the dog be able to find it? That's interesting.
Starting point is 00:17:24 It's amazing. Maybe we hide Billy's cell phone. I thought he should do that. I actually think that... Can we do that? Is that y'all don't want to do that? We may do that in the second hour. I'd like to hide Billy's cell phone.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Watch Cam find it. Cam's ready to show off. And if Cam doesn't find it, Billy never gets his cell phone. 280, 2287. We're going to take a break. We are here at the Kentucky State Police Training Academy. This is KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
Starting point is 00:17:50 This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. Starting point is 00:18:40 new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes
Starting point is 00:18:56 when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
Starting point is 00:19:14 because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing,
Starting point is 00:19:30 growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, Our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:19:52 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee.
Starting point is 00:20:53 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:21:11 Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here. It's Valentine's Day. Hope you bought your significant others, something for Valentine's Day. I know, you know, you can get the chocolate flowers. What else besides chocolate and flowers do people get a lot?
Starting point is 00:21:39 I guess, like... Jewelry? Oh, that's, you got to be serious to get into the jewelry, yes. I just wouldn't get flowers like a week ahead of time before the prices went up to $60, $70 for a dozen roses. Makes you look like you're prepared. I was in New York for Valentine's Day once, and, you know, they have those like little bodegas. And on the day of the thing, like, it's like $10 for a rose or something. You don't wait until the last minute to get your flowers.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Which, of course, is what I do, so that's a problem. I have to do that this afternoon. Abby for listening, I've had it for a long time. By the way, I was told, Brian, it's troopers, not officers. I should have known that. My mom will be disappointed because she would always make that connection for me. It's troopers, not officers. The troopers are always, they get the hat, like they're always dressed to the nines.
Starting point is 00:22:29 It's big time. Troopers are heroes, man. These guys risk their lives every day to keep us safe. So, like I said, I've always admired them. Wanted to be one. The statue outside for the 37 fallen troopers and highway patrolmen who've died in the line of duty in Kentucky. Yeah, a very detailed statue out there for McNeely. But with the hats they were showing us, the uniform hadn't changed over the years, but the hats have changed a little bit.
Starting point is 00:22:56 A couple of guys are jealous that they had some cowboy hats back in the day. They used to wear cowboy hats. Maybe we could bring cowboy hats from them. You got one of those, you know. Here's my first check in Detroit, Bill Colorado. There's a lot of part of this that would be hard for me, but I, I like that. You go to join ksp.com and look and you can check it out.
Starting point is 00:23:14 By the way, speaking of going to Internet sites, yesterday, you know, I went to the Google Trends to see, you know, I like to sometimes when we talk about a topic, go look at Google trends and see, like, did people search it? Like, Kentucky was the number one state by far for search of that book, The Wager, I talked about. Was it really? Maybe he should start a book club. You should.
Starting point is 00:23:36 I feel like these, I feel like these authors. need to give us a little something to promote their books. I knocked out 70 pages last night of tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow. I got to tell you, that's a good recommendation. I'm pretty hooked. I have to watch that. I'm a book. I'm a movie guy, so I think I'm a movie version of it.
Starting point is 00:23:53 I'd rather watch it than read it. You got to read. It helps your brain and helps you think. My brain needs a lot of help. I agree. 859-280-2287. Let's talk for just a second before we get the phones about the other big game Saturday. I don't know about you all.
Starting point is 00:24:10 I'm excited about Auburn, Alabama. I mean, I think the three best teams in the country are Auburn, Alabama, and Duke. I think then there's a group of, like, eight or ten teams that are in the next tier, of which, if we're healthy, I think we're in that group, too. But they haven't had the number one and two teams play each other since 2008. And in the same state, it's only happened like five times in history. Memphis, Tennessee, Duke, Carolina a few times. And that's it.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Those are the only times the number one. number one and two teams from the same state have played each other. You know, it's funny, with Auburn being pretty bad at football the last few years, and Alabama, you know, Sabin's left, the football state is a basketball state. They're saying maybe the biggest game in the history of the state of Alabama on Saturday. Are you excited to watch it? I am excited to watch it. I heard a guy say that on the fine bomb show yesterday.
Starting point is 00:25:06 This is the biggest college basketball game in the history of the state of Alabama. Alabama, number one versus number two, completely overshadowing the Iron Bowl now is this basketball matchup. It is the Iron Bowl now. It is the Iron Bowl, yeah. Well, I mean, you also got two, Drew, huge personalities as coaches, right? I mean, I think Pearl and Nate Oates are kind of what you want. If you're at a school like that, you're trying to get people into basketball. You want huge personalities.
Starting point is 00:25:29 I don't know if they like each other or not. I hope they don't because I feel like that would make it better. I don't know that I've heard they don't. And then they both play exciting styles. I mean, they're both fun to watch the way they get up and down the court. Should be great. Yeah, I'm with you. I don't watch them closely enough to know the relationship between Pearl and Oates.
Starting point is 00:25:46 I hope it's nasty, though, because they're both fiery guys. And I'm excited, you know, when Kentucky's at home, we make a whole day of it, don't get to watch a lot of other basketball. I'm going to watch as much basketball as I can Saturday. We're going to be on our pregame show at the end of it. So the game's from four to six, so we'll probably be on as the game comes down. I think Auburn's been, like, the biggest surprise in college basketball this year. I knew they were going to be good, but not as good as they've been.
Starting point is 00:26:08 They just been dominating teams. So who you got? The game is at Alabama, right? The game's... I have to look. I don't know. I think the game is in Tuscaloosa. So the game's in Tuscaloosa, who you got to win it?
Starting point is 00:26:21 And they play again in two and a half weeks. They'll play in Auburn. I'm going to go Alabama. And we need them to give Auburn a loss. With Alabama's schedule, I mean, not that Kentucky can win the conference, but just to bring Auburn down a little bit. I think Alabama has more losses ahead, so I hope they'll help everyone else. If Auburn wins this game, they're probably winning.
Starting point is 00:26:38 in the SEC. So, I mean, this is like their SEC chance to win the whole conference. I don't sound crazy, but I think Alabama is the best team in the country right now. I think they're playing so well. I mean, they've got it rolling. The fact that's on their home court, I don't think there's any way Auburn can sneak in there and win that one. I think Auburn's better, but the game is at Alabama.
Starting point is 00:26:58 Yeah. I think that's going to make a difference, so I will take Alabama. What about you? Auburn's only hit 100 points plus like two times this year. Alabama seems to be able to hit 100 points with ease. So I think Alabama wins tomorrow. So three picks for Alabama. One for Auburn.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Who's up first? Adam is up first. Adam, go ahead, Adam. The Kentucky game in Alabama, Auburn. Sunday is the 50th anniversary special of S&L. Question is, who's your favorite cast member and what's your favorite skips? Oh, I love this. So first of all, this was going to be a topic.
Starting point is 00:27:33 Let's just hold off. I was going to start the second hour on talking. Because this is the 50th anniversary. I don't know if you've seen the list of people that are going to be there. it's like everyone you've ever liked. It's like everybody that's ever been on SNL plus, you know, like massive stars. Basically everyone who's ever been on the show is going to be there. They also invited Peyton Manning.
Starting point is 00:27:51 They brought there most, the people that are the host people but like the most. And Peyton Manning's on the case. But he was great when he was on there. He did it like twice. Justin Timberlick, I thought was really good when he guest hosted a couple times. So yeah, maybe he'll be back there too. Let's just put a pin in that just one second. By the way, on Kentucky game against Texas, Drew said he thinks there's going to be a big crowd.
Starting point is 00:28:13 I saw that they're expecting 25 to 30 percent of the crowd to be Kentucky fans. That would be an amazing amount of people to get into that arena. Yeah, I mean, Austin's a cool place to go hang out, you know, I guess for the weekend. But not close. I went to Kentucky, Texas, A&M a couple years back. And I'd say 20% of the crowd was Kentucky fans in that game. So, I mean, I can see it do it. We're here at the Kentucky State Police Academy in Frankfurt.
Starting point is 00:28:40 We will take a break. Come back, take your calls. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287 here at the Kentucky State Police Training Academy in Frankfurt. You can learn how to be in class 106 at the KSP Academy. Learn at join KSP.com. You have until March 14th to apply.
Starting point is 00:29:07 And we thank the folks out here for bringing us to make sure people know that they can serve the state and get started on a big career here at join KSP.com. Text machine is 772-774-5254. One person writes, Matt, when do you think is the last time UK was a lower seed in the SEC tournament than they will be in the NCAA tournament? Never. Great question, yeah. Never.
Starting point is 00:29:34 But that's going to happen this year. I mean, we're going to be, I mean, yeah, it's probably going to happen because let's say we go on a big run. I think the highest we could get seated is probably third in the NCAA tournament. And I don't think we're going to finish in the top three of the SEC unless Florida collapses. So, and then anything from there, I mean, we could go all the way down to a 10 in the SEC. I think we could go, the most likely range is 4 to 10 somewhere. So I would say, you know, maybe there's a world. We get a four in the SEC and a four in the NCAA.
Starting point is 00:30:10 But I think there's a really good chance, Drew, no matter what, that we will see us be a lower seat in the SEC than the NCAA. Yeah, I think that's happening. Right now, they're a three seed in the NCAA. So, I mean, if they're going to win more SEC games to climb up the SEC seating, then they'd probably go up to a two or not going to be a one, but I don't think they'd fall much farther from their NCAA. I don't think there will be any way we can.
Starting point is 00:30:33 could be a higher SEC than NCAA. That's amazing, because I am sure, Ryan, that that's never happened. I was just thinking the years that they were a seven or eight seed in the NCAA tournament, were we a higher senior SEC tournament? Oh, yeah. I mean, because there's just never a year where there's this in many good SEC teams, and then we won some big non-conference games against Duke and Gonzagg and Louisville that helps our NCAA seat.
Starting point is 00:31:00 So, yeah, I think this will be the first. I mean, I'm sure that's happened maybe in the ACC in years past, but I know it's not happened. Almost every game you play in the conference is a quad one game, and they're talking about 12, maybe even 13 teams making the NCAA tournament. I think there's a chance when the season's over. We played 18 SEC games, and I believe I saw 16 of the 18 are going to be quad one. The only ones that will not be quad one are the LSU and South Carolina home games, but otherwise they're all going to be quad one. Just to show how weird the seating is. is like you have the school record most in history beating top 15 teams but you've also lost to
Starting point is 00:31:38 Georgia vandy old miss traditionally the worst teams in the conference that you beat every year but they're going to make the tournament just just looking at logos and rankings that just doesn't feel like the math doesn't math there but that's how the year is you know matt this conference is so balanced they're 82 and 82 against each other did you know that I mean now Carl ravage is even getting dunked on by mark pope I mean even Mark pope is mocking poor Carl ravage how about our boy Jacob, though, with that question. Jacobs wanted to ask the question. I was so proud.
Starting point is 00:32:05 You have a lot of guts to get up there and say that. One person writes, Matt, this team because of Trent Noah, is one of my favorite, if not the favorite teams that I have ever had for Kentucky. What are each of your favorite UK teams? Okay, so for me, I'll just give a top five. This is not in a particular order, but if you're just telling me, what are the teams that I like the most? Not the best, but I like the most.
Starting point is 00:32:33 92, the team that lost to Leitner. 03, the Bogans and all those guys and how good that team was the one that lost to Dwayne Wade. 2010, Wall Cousins Patterson, probably 2015, just because I really like those guys a lot. And then I'll maybe throw in 98 when we won the title with Tubby. Those are the ones that stick out to me as just my favorite teams to watch and be around. Ryan, what about you? 98 is my favorite.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Like I said, I was deep into it then, and that run they went on with, you know, Cameron and Jeff Shepard, Allen, Edward Scott Padgett, that whole group. That was the one I was probably the closest to. They're my favorite. But 03 may be my second favorite. That team, the SEC season, that team, they just smothered people and just were tougher than everybody. They were a lot of fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Yeah, for me, Drew, a lot of it's just like on a personal level who I liked. So that's, but what about you? What would yours be? Yeah, mine are mostly on personal level, too. 96, probably my number one, because I was that perfect age where, I mean, they're just superheroes to you. And it was such a fun team. I went to the summer camp before they started that year. So I felt like I knew the guys, even though I really didn't.
Starting point is 00:33:47 And then more recently, Waw Cousins, 2012, and then 2015, you know, I was still kind of getting started with KSR for a couple of those. And that's back when we had a little more personal relationship. with the players and it helped that they were all really good, too. So those are about four. I love the Fox Monk, Bam, Willis Hawkins team, too. I liked all those guys quit a bit. 93 was the first season I can remember watching from start to finish. So Roderick Rhodes.
Starting point is 00:34:13 That's a great team. Rodney Dent, Travis Ford, Javon, Ashford. The Faddle. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. The 96, those teams just smothered teams. I mean, would be, you know, teams about 50 or 60 on the regular. 2010, obviously, with John Wall, then 2012, 2015 would be my top five. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:31 I like last year's team a lot, too, to be honest. I mean, I know the ending stunk, but during the season, I really enjoyed that group. If they had won some games, I was prepared to put them on my Mount Rushmore. I loved that group. It was just such a disappointing ending. I think the guys right that sent that to you, though, this team is going to end up being the favorite for a lot of people, just because the way, like you said, the land of misfit toys, kind of a rag-tag bunch. It was thrown together, a couple Kentucky kids playing well.
Starting point is 00:34:54 I think a lot of people think fondly of this team. Who's up next? Richard is up next. Richard, go ahead, Richard. The boys can back. Well, we said that at the start of the show, Richard. I love you, Richard, but I wish you would listen to the start of the show before you call. Well, I'm just by five minutes.
Starting point is 00:35:29 I'm sorry. I know. That's okay. I appreciate the call. Robinson and Butler out. I suspect that they come back end of the year, maybe the last couple games of the regular season. I think Butler will be back before Robinson, just listening to Pope. I think Robinson will be out maybe close to the rest of regular season,
Starting point is 00:35:49 and then Kirkreece is not coming back. Everybody's got to stop acting like. I mean, if he comes back, it's a shock, but people still act like that's something that's going to happen. Drew, I don't get any sense. That's the case. And with his injury, I mean, if he were able to start running tomorrow, you still got a lot of conditioning to do, a lot of basketball you've missed.
Starting point is 00:36:06 I also don't expect Butler Robinson for a while. But with them, I almost feel like it's keeping. them on ice and just hoping you're doing well without them. And if it gets to a point like you've got to play through it tonight, maybe they'll try them, but the hope would be to win games without needing them. If I were going to guess, this is just a guess. But I think they will look at it. I think they will, in my opinion, be out Saturday.
Starting point is 00:36:27 I think they'll probably be out against Vandy on Wednesday and probably Alabama on the road. I almost wonder if Pope's just going to sacrifice that road Bama game and go away. I see at Oklahoma as a game I can see him coming back. because that's one I think you want to win and you probably need them to go do. That's kind of, that's how I look. So who do you think he's going to start at point tomorrow? You know, because when Robinson was out, Butler was in. When Butler was in, Robinson was out.
Starting point is 00:36:56 So now you don't have either one of them. Can they start Perry? Yeah, I mean, I think you have to. Oway took over for a few minutes in the last game. That's the first time he's done it. You don't want to take him away from his role, especially in a game like tomorrow where I think he's going to be maybe one of of the stars.
Starting point is 00:37:11 That's a good question. You know, I guess you'll go, I guess Perry, Oway, Brea, Almanor, Williams. And that's got to be cool for Travis Perry, you know, being a home state guy. Mya stats had that as the second best lineup in the last month. Perry with the four other starters, not Perry with Noah and other guys, but when he's in with the four starters, it's gone well. I don't know that Perry will play more than 15 minutes, but I think if you're just talking about starting the game, Ryan, I.
Starting point is 00:37:41 I think they might do that. Yeah, and I'm trying to think Texas, they've got a guard named Trey Johnson. It's really good. And they got a Pope. But those guys aren't like Zichai Ziegler that can just blow by Travis like he was doing in the Tennessee game. So maybe he can handle it. I do think, though. Trey Johnson's good, but Travis Perry won't be near him.
Starting point is 00:37:55 Noah's going to be playing a lot. Noah's going to be playing a lot. I'll be a Chandler game. I think we'll also get a sense of how healthy car is. Because if Carr is healthy, he's playing 25 or 30 minutes. If he plays 15, then that just tells me he's not. healthy because they need him to play a lot. If you want to score big in the NBA or college basketball this season, go to the

Starting point is 00:39:05 Uh, no. But I know how to fold a flag. I can make the little. triangle. Oh, really? Me too. I've told you this story, haven't I? I don't think so. I didn't know you knew origami. I think, have I not told you this story? When I was in law school, I represented someone that had the death penalty. And when they got executed, they were in the military. The military wouldn't give them a military funeral. So we went, there weren't many people. And me and the guy that did the case with them, they asked us to fold the flag. And I learned on the way, practicing with a Kittles rapper. Good for you, man.
Starting point is 00:39:43 That's really cool that you did that. You want to talk about nervous. Oh, yeah. Like with everybody watching and you try to do that, I don't think we did a perfect job, but we did the best we could. So we'll take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game.

And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
Starting point is 00:42:02 His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin. and Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reed. He has to guard Julius Randall.
Starting point is 00:42:22 And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball like,
Starting point is 00:42:38 after you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. Starting point is 00:43:33 It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Let's see. I can't find the news you told me about. Are you making that up? It was on the Twitter. All right, I'll see if I can find it. My man here says that YouTube TV and CBS have come to an agreement
Starting point is 00:43:51 to where they'll get your CBS back, but I can't find that online. No, here we go. Okay, there it is. YouTube TV reaches extension with CBS to avoid March Madness blackout. So that's good. We'll be able to watch Shane in the NCAA tournament. I shouldn't have doubted you. It was on SI.com.
Starting point is 00:44:07 My bad. I should have listened. Yeah, smart move on both sides there. Nobody's going to win in that situation if you don't have access to the games. Radney Foster. Nobody wins, we both lose. Virge, you probably don't know that song, but that was an early 90s country hit. Of course it is.

Starting point is 00:44:43 Hey, Matt, I'm headed to Austin this weekend. I'm in a tough spot. I got free tickets by a staff member, but I'm sitting in the parent section, coach section of the Texas area. How do I handle that? What do I wear? Well, first of all, I've been in this situation.
Starting point is 00:44:58 You get the tickets from Texas. You can't be obnoxious. Can't be. You can't boo. You can't do that. But the expectation, you still wear a Kentucky shirt, you cheer softly but violently. Sort of like being in a car with Ryan when things happen.
Starting point is 00:45:16 You're going to be silent and violent, and you're still going to, but you are going to cheer for Kentucky, but because they gave you the tickets, you can't be obnoxious. Do you agree with that? Yeah, you've got to be a little bit respectful. You can still support your team where Kentucky and cheer, you just can't be obnoxious is the right word. Also, man, I know you're a big fan of Austin.
Starting point is 00:45:34 Where's a good spot to eat when I get down there? there's a million different things i would say uh you know look up i don't it's been a couple almost two years since i've been there but look up the uh mexican text mex spots and uh you will you'll you'll be a ton i mean i really like those the torchies tacos but they got that here now so you don't have to eat that there you can get something something there i was in austin for three days and i think i forgot to eat but i know a lot of people that went and got barbecue did the two hour wait franklin's is the big one don't do that don't do that the two-hour barbecue wait. It's good, but like it's not worth two hours waiting, and it's not
Starting point is 00:46:11 that much different than what you can get in a woods. Everybody thinks they have the best barbecue, right? No matter where you go. Memphis, St. Louis, Austin. It's not worth two hours. I appreciate the call of waiting in line for it. So you're going to Austin this weekend? I mean it. Valentine's Day weekend? You got to stop. I haven't been in two years. Kentucky is playing there, you goober. Who's next? Got Ed up next First of all I didn't ask you to laugh Rick like that was
Starting point is 00:46:39 I couldn't help myself That was funny All right Ed is next Ed go ahead Ed Hey man I was a few days ago I was confident of the Tennessee
Starting point is 00:46:52 suite And now I'm about 85% For the next game Yeah I mean I'm gonna pick us to win but I'm not 100% confident. I mean, to be honest with you, I'm not going to be 100% confident for any game
Starting point is 00:47:07 when our two best players are not on the court. I think that would be true of any team. You know, take any team in the country and take their best score and their best leader off the court. Drew, it's going to be hard to win. And then you add that you're playing on the road, I mean, it's going to be hard. I want us to win.
Starting point is 00:47:26 I think we will win, but I'm a lot more focused on. We've got to make sure we beat Shannon's team next win. Wednesday night and rub. This game, I appreciate the call. It's not out yet, but I don't know. We appreciate the call. You think we'll be an underdog?
Starting point is 00:47:43 I think it'll be pretty close. The Ken Palm Analytics had Kentucky winning by one. That's usually pretty close to the spread. So it'll be a tight spread, whichever direction it goes. With the injuries, I mean, throw in your backup point guard's not playing either. That's why you don't want to make excuses for Kentucky basketball. We keep a high bar no matter what. But to your point, any team in the country that had the injuries,
Starting point is 00:48:02 Kentucky has right now would be taking losses they shouldn't. There's no team that you can say who's your floor leader and who's your best score and you lose them and they don't have an impact. That's going to be true of every team. You're down three guards and you have a big man who is questionably healthy. So you don't even know. You're down your first and second string point guard and your best score. You do that to any team.
Starting point is 00:48:26 It doesn't matter who they are. They're going to struggle. That's going to be very, very difficult to win these games. You can even say your first string point guard, your second string point guard, and your third string point guard. And Jackson, you're down three point guards. Your three deep is gone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:40 Who's next? Joseph is up next. Joseph, go ahead, Joseph. Hey, guys, I was seeing how you all felt about starting Braya at the one tomorrow because he said he's more comfortable taking shots. I mean, I think they could do that for a, like, for plays. Like, I mean, I appreciate the call. I think you can put Brea, Drew, like you do with Amari, where he's at the top of the key.
Starting point is 00:49:06 But as far as bringing the ball up, I'm not sure that would be his strength. But, yeah, there'll be plays where he plays equivalent of a point guard the way that Amari Williams does sometimes, too. Yeah, he looked a lot better when he had the ball on his hand. He won't be the full point guard. But setting a screen for Bray at the top, when he can just take a step back and pop one, that's where he got a lot of his points against Tennessee. I think we'll see the offense doing more of that with somebody guys. see a lot of, of, it's hard to do it.
Starting point is 00:49:34 But Garrison, Williams, Carr, pick and roll with, with, with, with Brea, and let them pick their poison. And especially with Carr, he can roll out and shoot the three himself. And I think that's, that's a dangerous little weapon. I think they probably go point guard by committee. I think Owe, Brea, Amari, Travis Perry, they'll all probably take their turn doing point guard. I will say, when Garrison dribbles, when he plays that role,
Starting point is 00:50:00 Yeah. Get a little nervous. I mean, I get nervous when Amari does it, but he's done it so much. You know, I'm except, but when Garrison does it, he is definitely a dribble like Stanley from the office. He's dribbling at like 10 feet in front of his. How about, you know, you get maybe one dribble no more? We don't need two dribbles from Garrison. Yeah, I would, I'd be fine with a Garrison one and a half dribble.
Starting point is 00:50:23 Yeah. Just no more than that. Just no more than that. I'd be okay with that. Who's next? Knox is up next. Knox. Go ahead, Knox. Hey, Matt, I just had a question for you.
Starting point is 00:50:34 I was wondering, what's your go-to excuse for why you're still single on Valentine's Day? Thank you.
