Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

Starting point is 00:01:35 Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing, and honestly, just kind of lonely. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the psychology of your 20s is breaking down the science behind the biggest roadblocks we face. I was six years into my career, the 80-hour weeks, and just the first one in, the last one out, and I ended up burning out. There was a large chunk of my 20s that I like was just so wanting to like be out of that phase out of my skin. And I just like really regret not living in the present more. You don't need to have everything figured out right now. You just need to understand yourself a little bit better. Listen to the psychology of your 20s on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

Welcome, everyone.
Starting point is 00:02:49 It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live. Look at this. Give people in a Mexican restaurant, they get excited at Poppies in Palau. It is Friday, February the 21st, and we are here ready to go. You can give a shout to Clark's Pubbit Shop, phone line 859-2-80-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-7-7-4-2-5-254 in this edition sponsored by the T.J. Smith law office you call T.J. O'Mayom-Make-em-Pay. We are out here in a part of town that I don't get to a lot, but when I came this morning, I thought, wow, this area has grown a lot, right? at Palomar. What is the name of this play?
Starting point is 00:03:29 Palomar Fountains. Right out here at Paupe's Mexican restaurant. And this area has exploded and Poppies is here. You know, I really like when people come to KS. Bar for games. But with that television screen, you know, if we're full, maybe make your way out here. Because what an absolutely cool environment. The third Poppies location out here in Palomar. And we are here to celebrate tomorrow is National Marketer. Margarita Day. So all day here at Poppies tomorrow, 350 margaritas all day tomorrow at Poppies. That seems like a pretty good deal.
Starting point is 00:04:05 I think we should sample all of them today just to make sure they're ready to go after the show. I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm feeling generous, Shannon. Yeah. That's what I'm feeling. So I talk to Marcos, who owns Poppies. We made a little side deal. I'm going to, if you come to the show from now until noon, that's for those of you here. And if you come until noon, I'm buying everybody one margarita. That got the crowd excited. All right, so that's for me. So you can, I guess, tell your server. But for those of you that are on your way here, you can come take your lunch and get a margarita on mat.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I mean, not literally on me, but I will pay for it. I don't want a body shot on a Friday morning. But I will... That's for later. That's right. I will pay for one margarita for everybody in here, Drew. I feel like that doesn't include you three. But for everybody else, I was here early, too.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I'll go and break the ice and be the first one. You know, tomorrow's the holiday. I'm more of a Christmas Eve guy than Christmas, so I'll be a Margarita Eve guy and celebrate during the show. So you guys all enjoy that. And tomorrow, it's $350 all day out here, and Poppy's Quatro. So they've got one out there on campus right above Charlie Browns.
Starting point is 00:05:18 I've been to that one a ton of times. That's the original. That's the original. Then they got one right next the bar. It's a drive-through. It's a drive-thru Mexican-Rown. which you don't see a lot and then one out here and a great food and Marcos the owner is a really nice guy. Yeah, we've talked to poppy's quattro getting ready to come in. So they're exploding just like this area out here.
Starting point is 00:05:38 This whole area out here has been exploding. I guess he's going to name him, Shannon, by the Spanish number sequence. Do you know how to count in Spanish? How far can you go? Three. All right. I just said what the fourth one is? Quatro. Okay. Cinco.
Starting point is 00:05:53 All right, go. Six. All right. All right, I didn't ask you. I didn't ask you and you were wrong anyway. You can't scream. You can't scream and then be wrong. SACE and then what?
Starting point is 00:06:06 Septe. Septe is close. Cente. And then what's nine? Nuevee. And then what's 10? Dose. No, that's two.
Starting point is 00:06:17 You're close. Uno dose. That's one. Two. D. D.S. D. There we go.
Starting point is 00:06:24 So you got. Some of the numbers correct. Bobby can call me when he gets to his 10th restaurant. Then I'll know it by that. And then you can do Jose, Dose, Trace, Cotorsay? You're so smart. That's true. 859-2802287.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Text machine 7-7-2-7-4-5-254. We only have Ryan Lemon five games left in the college basketball regular season. Kind of crazy to think. It's such a fun year that it's been, but we are down to five games. And tomorrow, we probably have the game. If you saw it on the schedule at the beginning of the year, you would go, that might be the hardest game on the schedule. At Alabama, we didn't know Auburn would be quite as good as they are, but at Alabama is a spread out, Drew? I don't.
Starting point is 00:07:07 No, it'll be this afternoon. It'll be this afternoon. What do you think it's going to be, by the way? Oh, boy. Seven. Yeah, I was going to say like eight or nine. I think it's going to be a hefty number. We don't have the injury report, but I'm suspecting no Robinson, no Butler.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Go down to Alabama. To me, this is a free money game. Like, I don't, this will be one of the few games I watch with no nervousness, because I just don't really think we have a chance to win, so I'm not going to be nervous. Do you give us a chance to win? Yeah, I guess a little chance because, like you said, you're playing with house money. You can go down there and just play loose, not a lot of pressure.
Starting point is 00:07:41 All the pressure is kind of on Alabama. They've lost two in a row. They're kind of limping a little bit. And so I think, you know, if you go down there and just play loose, you've got a chance. I mean, I've said a bunch this year, this is a game where I don't think we have a chance to win and then we go win. So, I mean, I said that at Gansagga. At Gunzaga, I said that at Tennessee. And now I'm saying it again, Drew, maybe I hope I'm wrong again. I mean, I do think they play bad defense. We'll be able to score. The question is just, will we be able to score as much as they do?
Starting point is 00:08:10 Yeah, similar styles. They're just a little bit better at it and much healthier right now. I mean, the game at Rupp was a lot of fun. What was it? It was a lot of fun. For a game we lost, that was a lot of fun. Yeah, 102, 97. Something like that. Yeah. In Alabama hit two more threes than Kentucky did and wins by five. So I think it really can come down to a three-point shooting contest. They've been reeling a little bit defensively. Teams have been scoring on them. So if Kentucky can go shoot on the road, I think they have a chance. But I mean, Alabama, they put up a lot of points. They can put up the top five offenses in the country. What's interesting about them is they can put up a lot of points in a short period of time. They also can go ice cold. And they can go like four or five
Starting point is 00:08:45 minutes where they don't score. They did that against Missouri shan at the start. And then really never came back. I mean, they were down 12-0. And at that, I don't think they got it closer to the whole rest of the game. I think it's going to be important. We're going to get a chance to make a run. We have to do it. But most importantly, these guys got to hit shots. Like, they're going to be, they're going to get open looks.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Alabama's going to give you open looks. And guys like Brea, Almanor, Perry, Noah, Oway, car, they're just going to have to make them. If you remember going back to the first game at Rupp, Alabama went on a 9-0 run there at the end, and that's essentially what won them that game. The game was back and forth and then they went on a run. The other thing, too, in these last two losses for Alabama, their opponents have gone to the line 79 times.
Starting point is 00:09:29 So if Kentucky can play physical down low and get to the free throw line and not try to avoid contact. That's not really how we play, though. Well, that's the way they need to. Because I think that could be a key to win. We've talked about Kobe Brea. Drew's made this point all year. This team kind of rises and falls based simply on whether or not Kobe Brea makes shots. He's going to have to make how many tomorrow to win.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I think it's a high number. I think it's like five, maybe six. Yeah, I was going to say five when you were asking that question. He's got to. He's got to connect from downtown because those three guards for Alabama, they're not got shy. They're going to be bombed them all over the place. The thing that stuck out to me in the last game the most is we got absolutely abused by Grant Nelson.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Andrew Carr just could not. And Grant Nelson really has not been great this year. But Andrew Carr had no chance. We put Almanor. He was worse. Like somebody's going to have to guard that guy. Do you think they switch up, maybe put Williams on him? Like, how do we handle it?
Starting point is 00:10:26 I think that's the whole game. It was kind of just a wash everyone not named Grant Nelson versus Kentucky in Lexington, but he had 25 points, like 11 rebounds, really did most in the second half when Kentucky was trying to come back. Carr was just getting into his back injury at that point. I think he even missed maybe the next game. So part of that was Carr being hurt. I think it's a big game for Carr.
Starting point is 00:10:47 He even spoke about it. Like he's looking forward to this. It's kind of a makeup game because he played so poorly in that one. Couldn't hang with Nelson. Yeah, I mean, there's no reason on paper that Carr should not be able to. I mean, Grant Nelson's not a crazy good athlete, but he just out. The Alabama game was a game where I felt like we got out hustled at times. And like, you can, you can, even if we don't make the shots, we should make the effort and not give up what we did last game.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Yeah, and he was, man. Nelson was doing everything. We made him an All-American that day. But this is a good chance for Carr to step up. And if he's healthy and ready to go, you know, this could be a money game for him. He shows he can play against one of these guys He's going to kind of abuse him earlier in the season. So let's just say that I'm right
Starting point is 00:11:26 and that this game is kind of a no-lose game. Four games left after that. So I'm going to throw this in. Consider this one, too. We got at Oklahoma, is that Tuesday or Wednesday? Wednesday. See, I had on my schedule Tuesday. Wednesday night at 9 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Then we play, we've got Auburn at home, LSU at home at Missouri. I think it would be awesome if we could go three and two. I'm kind of back and forth between three and two and two and three is what we're going to do. What do you, Drew, think we're going to do in these last five games? If we go three and two, I think we're almost certain to get a buy and not have to play on Wednesday. If we go two and three, we might still get a buy, but it's not certain. I think I'm going to go two and three.
Starting point is 00:12:11 Before Vandy, I had them finishing this stretch three and three. Be Van de LSU and win at Oklahoma. On the other three, I just think that's a lot to ask. I mean, Missouri, when the schedule comes out, you think, oh, Missouri, last game of the year, a team that didn't win a game last year. Now that's probably the hardest, maybe of the hardest of the group. They just won at Alabama. You get Auburn at home.
Starting point is 00:12:29 I mean, those are maybe the three hardest games on the schedule, and you've got them all here to end the season. But as long as you beat LSU at home and get that one in Oklahoma, I don't think those are going to punish. By the way, Oklahoma might be playing for the NCAA tournament in our game. I mean, they may not make it anyway, but if they're going to have a chance, they're kind of hovering, they got to beat us on their home floor. That's going to be a massive game for them. What do you think we do in these? I agree with Drew.
Starting point is 00:12:53 I would say two and three. You know, last week if you were to ask me, I would say maybe they could beat Missouri. But after seeing Missouri play the other night, they look like the best team in college basketball against Alabama. So unfortunately, I think two and three is the most likely. I'm going to say three and two because I think we're either going to steal. I think we're either going to steal. I'm predicting us to beat Auburn at home with one caveat. If you give me Butler or Robinson, if one of those guys pull.
Starting point is 00:13:18 We're beating Auburn. If they both don't play, then I'll say no. But if one of them plays, we're beating Auburn. If not, I think we can win at Missouri. I think this is the game we can't win, but I think we can win the rest of them, right? I think we all agree. This season is so crazy. It won't surprise any of us if they beat Auburn and then go and lose at Oklahoma.
Starting point is 00:13:37 I just kind of seem how this season has been so far this year. I thought you had more. Is that it? Yeah. One sentence? No, one sentence. One sentence. It's the third time I've looked at you one sentence.
Starting point is 00:13:51 You're not in a talkative mood today? No, I thought I made a very impactful statement. I was waiting for it to sink in. Okay, well, I don't know if it did. I'll add for him. With Auburn being at home, you hopefully have Kobe Brea. It's crazy his splits of home verse away. It really is.
Starting point is 00:14:05 My man does not play well on the road, but if you get him in Rupp Arena, I don't know if it's the crowd or sleeping in his own bed, being comfortable there or what, but he's a different player at home. So I do think of the three, even though Auburn's the best team, having it at home, I think, is the best shot to win one. Let me give you one encouraging stat that I saw yesterday. We were awful, awful, most of the year defensively. I think at one point we were ranked 97th in the Kim-Pom defensively.
Starting point is 00:14:31 We've gone up in two weeks, 44 spaces in defense. Our Ken Palm rating, even though we've lost games, we've risen quite a bit. I think we're up to like 17th or something, which will help us because that had been our lowest rating. Our defense, Ryan, has gotten significantly better in the last few weeks. What do you attribute that to? I think a lot of it is just the fact they don't have Butler and they don't have Robinson. The other guys have had to step up. I think the effort has been better.
Starting point is 00:14:56 They helped Van did 21 points in the second half. Maybe their best defensive half of the season, and that was without your best defender even playing that game. Can I also say, Shinn, I think Amari raises his arms now on defense and block shots. That usually helps. And I'm only half kid. Like, I feel like he's, he has become a rim, in the last few games in a way that I don't know if somebody told him to raise his arms, but the team's shooting percentage we play against at the rim has fallen dramatically.
Starting point is 00:15:25 And I actually think he's a big part of it. What a concept. Raise your arms with your playing in defense if you're a rim protector. But yeah, he's really stepped up, you know, with Carr battling that back injury. I think he's been, other than Oway, maybe our most valuable player of the last few games. Oh, I think the triple double and going perfect the other night. I actually think he is our most. valuable player, at least maybe not for the year.
Starting point is 00:15:46 That might be Butler, but for the last few games, definitely. I think so, too, especially Garrison. He almost seems to have reverted a little bit from earlier in the season. So I think Williams is your MVP as important as Butler is. And I also think part of the reason the defense has turned it on is they figured it out when Mark Pope tore the Ole Miss locker room apart. I think seeing Mark Pope lose his mind after that old Miss game might have made them realize, okay, we need to lock in.
Starting point is 00:16:10 They did not release a video of the journey. in the locker room when Mark Pope came out with a bloody hand and a broken chalkboard. That's the video we need. That's the video I want. I want to see the video because I can't see Mark Pope. That's been the narrative, though, for fans. Like, this guy is not hard enough on these guys. I think if we all saw that video, we'd have a different perspective.
Starting point is 00:16:29 What do you think happened? Like, it's like, I mean, he did have a bloody hand. You have to, like, beat things up to have a bloody hand. He punched something. He had to punch him. Whatever he punched one. Hit something on a table. If I were guessing, I were guessing, I would say.
Starting point is 00:16:43 the bathroom attached to the locker room might have had a little damage. So you think whatever he paused? Oh wait a minute, you know that? I mean, I don't know anything that happens behind closed doors, but if I did, the bathroom might have had some damage. That sounds like somebody,
Starting point is 00:16:57 it sounds like some scuttlebutt. I don't know. I'm just guessing, but the fact that he did that, you know, we all love the Ted Lassow attitude, but that old Miss half was so bad. But Ted Lassow would get angry too. Occasionally, yeah. He needed that moment.
Starting point is 00:17:11 I know that might not have been in his character. but even he said I had to run white hot to get my message across, and they really have improved defensively since then. I just know, like, when I'm at home and I want to punch something, I go to like maybe my mattress, maybe a pillow. I'm not going to punch a wall. Let me tell you what I learned a few months ago, don't punch through glass on your door.
Starting point is 00:17:28 That's not what you want to do. 859-280-2287. It is a free margarita for everybody here. You're going to see a vocal man here at Pat Poppies. We will take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsClice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real.
Starting point is 00:18:10 From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. SportsSlice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience
Starting point is 00:18:43 in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough
Starting point is 00:19:01 because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:19:18 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. What's up, fam? This Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:19:36 And I'm CJ Toledano and our podcast, Point game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:19:58 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius R. Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:20:33 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey everyone, it's Ryder Strong and Will Ferdell from PodMeets World. And now the Pod Meets Twirled podcast. We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge.
Starting point is 00:21:05 That is the point of this show. I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough. Did people not like it? Like what was... Yeah. Just because we...
Starting point is 00:21:14 Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion at the 50th season from the final attempts at gameplay to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of... Ha, who. Ah, ha, ooh.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Again, we are experts. So make sure to tune into PodMeets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to PodMeets Twirled on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live. at the poppies out here on, it's called Palomar, what, showers?
Starting point is 00:21:49 Fountains. Fountains, okay, Palomar Sh showers. Palomar Shows. Yeah, Falmarn Fountains. They're going to open a fourth Poppy's location right next to the new Publix out on Citation Point. That's in a place where I could go there quite a bit. I could walk to it from my house. I go through the drive-thru of the one next to the bar sometimes.
Starting point is 00:22:08 So, by the way, speaking of the bar, we had amazing trivia crowd last night. Good questions of which I don't know how many you would have gotten right, Ryan, but it seems like you and your team have just quit. What has happened? I think we need a new leader. I think our current – Well, you're the leader. That's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:22:24 Our current team leader is not doing a job rallying the troops. Well, there's three more qualifiers left. That's it? Well, I mean, it is February. I guess so. Wow. Looks like a good young crowd. Excuse me, like a lot of college kids.
Starting point is 00:22:38 There was a lot. The college kid thing is increased, but we still have a lot of the same. general people that win we're getting it taco week by the way is the week of the cc tournament they'll have different tacos here every night did you want let me go the text machine first one person writes matt vandy 61 points versus kentucky is the lowest total all season long for vandy and the lowest we've given up i think our defense is getting good maybe yeah i mean especially after they gave up a lot in the first half what vandy only scored 21 after halftime. You have Edwards who played so well down in Nashville. You held him to 10 or 11 points.
Starting point is 00:23:15 I think they only had one other guy in double figures with 10. So it's really a great job overall. And you're doing that with Butler in street clothes, which made you so much more impressive. I don't get a lot of questions like this, Shannon, so I'll answer it. Okay. This is a law question. You should let Ryan answer the law. Okay, yeah, let's do that. All right, court is in session. I'll tell you what, you can give what you think the answer is, and then I'll give you the real answer. Okay. Okay. Matt, recently a coworker of mine. was working and was attaching a Bible verse to the sign over her desk while sending a company email.
Starting point is 00:23:47 Nothing sinister or harmful, just the verse. Is that a civil rights violation that she was threatened with being fired? Okay, Judge Lemon, is it a civil rights violation if you're working somewhere and they say you cannot attach a Bible verse to a company email? I know we have freedom of religion, but I believe there's a stipulation in there that you can't force it on people or do you, like you can't say it in schools. So I'm going to say you can't say it in business. No, sort of, no. So the First Amendment applies.
Starting point is 00:24:20 We've talked about this. What does it apply to? Freedom of speech, freedom of religion. It applies to the government. It's only what the government does. So if you work at a private employer, your private employer can tell you if you work here, no, you can't attach religious things to your email.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Now, the government, there's an argument that the government can't do that, although that's even complicated, but a private employer can do it. Your First Amendment rights are only with the government. Like if you, I won't use poppies, but if you were working at Mommies. Mommy Squammies. If you were working at Mommies, if you were working at Mommies, if Mommies said no, you can't do that in here, Mommies has a right to do that, as long as they're not being discriminatory and that's a whole other conversation.
Starting point is 00:25:08 So what if it was like a school or a public? Well, that's the government. So then the rules are a little different with government. But if it was government, a student could do it. Teacher probably couldn't do it. So there you go. There's your law. I like that.
Starting point is 00:25:24 859-280-2287. Did you watch the hockey last night? How many of you watched the hockey last night? Raise your hand. That's got to be the most people in a show that's ever raised their hand that they watched hockey. Yep. I'm going to make you a prediction. I think the rating for that hockey game last night is going to be the highest hockey anything in 15 or 20 years that Americans have watched.
Starting point is 00:25:45 All three of you watched it. Did you enjoy it? I know really nothing about hockey, but you get into it because it's the United States. It's like you get that Olympic feel. We want to win. We want to beat Canada. Do you know what we were even playing for? No, like this little tournament they made up.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Yeah, they made it up. Four nations. Yeah, four nations tournament. They just made it up. So you watched it? I watched not a lot of it, but I watched a little bit of it. Did you watch it? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:08 And overtime got beat by that slap shot there at the end. But, yeah, I was really expecting USA to win the whole thing, and I'm a little disappointed they didn't. And now we got their prime minister talking trash to America. Well, I mean, let's be fair. We've been saying we were going to make them the 51st state. I feel like it's understandable. They might be a little frustrated.
Starting point is 00:26:28 You can't take our game. We're not trying to take their game. Yeah. I actually thought the trash talking was pretty funny. I mean, from both of them. Did you enjoy it? Oh, yes. didn't miss a single minute. I even watched the 30-minute lead-up to it.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Had UK women on a side TV watching both. By far, the most hockey I've ever seen in my life, and I couldn't get enough of it. Even just, like, I loved when we scored and they played Freebird right at the guitar solo, and they, like, pan the crowd, and everybody's in costume. That just looked like such a great environment. Well, even at the bar, at trivia, there were people that came dressed in U.S. gear to watch. I thought it was, if you're talking about a sport that made the right decision, having that tournament. I mean, I love watching hockey, but like most people don't. And I don't think,
Starting point is 00:27:14 when's the last time people have talked this much about hockey? I mean, Miracle on ice. I mean, like, in my lifetime, never. Because the miracle on ice, I was like two years old. I think it's like the best thing they've ever done. Yeah. And my guy Matthews, who I didn't know about until yesterday, had three shots on goal in overtime there. And that, the goalie for the Canadians was amazing. The goalie for the Canadians was unbelievable. He was a wall. So it was awesome. That was a lot of fun to watch. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Who's up next? Kentucky Joe is up. Oh, good. That's the one that I wanted to start. A couple open lines. You should know that by our first call. 859-2-807. Go ahead, Joe.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Hello? Joe. Yes. You said, Joe, you just say Kentucky, Joe. All right, Joe, don't start with me this morning. Go ahead. Okay. Hey, hey, I think the Wild Hits can have a great game
Starting point is 00:28:06 against the fact, They're going to tie their tails up. And I think we'll be bombing the three. Well, we better. If we're going to win, we better bomb the threes. We're going to have to hit a lot of them. Joe, you doing okay otherwise? Yeah, I got a little birthday coming up soon.
Starting point is 00:28:28 So I'm hitting the magic age. Wow. Wait a minute. You're going to be 80? Oh, no, man. No, what's the magic? No, ma'am, I'm 10 you younger. I'll be 70.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Why is it the magic 8 if you're going to be 70? I don't know. I'm just saying that. I don't know. I'm feeling good today. I mean, there's nothing. Why isn't it the Magic 7? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:28:58 It's a good number, I guess. All right, sure. I guess it is. Thank you, Joe. Appreciate the call. It's the Magic 8. for his 70th birthday. I thought it made him he was turning 80.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Yeah, I don't think I would have too. All right, everybody, free margarita for me. Yay. We'll take a break. Be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live and poppies.
Starting point is 00:29:25 859-280-2287. I like when we go to places like this because I think there's groups of people who come in who maybe are not even here for the show. Like, I'm not sure if those guys are. They're going to get a free margarita. You mean the Indiana fans not here for the show? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:39 He's here for the show. show it's why that's why you're wearing the Indiana gear right or you don't know who I am that's okay I tried that you look like a nice guy I remember tomorrow at all the poppy's locations 350 margaritas I don't know if the college students know that but that one above Charlie Browns will end up packed if they do I'm frequent of that location too that's a great spot yeah I think that one will be will be wild so we got some breaking news Rick there we go the New York Yankees announced this morning they are getting rid of their facial hair policy.
Starting point is 00:30:18 They will allow players to have mustaches and well-groomed beards for the very first time in the history of the Yankee organization. They were the only team in sports that did not allow you to have facial hair, but George Steinbrenner's son, Hal says it is now time to get to the modern age and allow beards and mustaches. Ryan, you're a baseball guy. That was the one thing the Yankees were known for. There were some rumors that there are guys over the years they haven't gotten because they wanted to have facial hair. Do you think it's a good idea to modern their policy? I think it's maybe a little overdue that they should have changed that years and years ago.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Yeah, they keep that. But yeah, guys like Johnny Damon and some of these guys that were just known for having big, bushy beards. They get traded to the Yankees all has to come off, every bit of it. Really dumb role to begin with, in my opinion. Like, what are you showcasing? Clean faces. What does that have to do with baseball? Who, by the way, you play in dirt.
Starting point is 00:31:17 You're going to have a dirty face by the end of the game. That is true. Well, I would say, just to play devil's advocate, as a hockey person, you know, in hockey, they have hockey beards. And during the playoffs, it's like bad luck to shave. So by the finals, everybody looks like, like scraggedly old men. And so I've often wondered, like, they should get those guys not to do it, because by the time you get to the end, everybody looks like a homeless man. And I did wonder if, like, maybe that was partially what the Yankees want to do.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Yeah, but playoff beards, they can be magic. I mean, you're not modeling for a calendar. You're trying to win a game. So who cares what's on your face? I think it's very smart of them to change. Baseball, when you look at other sports, it's going the wrong direction and popularity. And I think old-time rules like that have been part of the problem, not that one specifically, but it is nice that they're catching up with the times.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Would you, what about you? Could I play for the Yankees? No. What if they said you can't, though, we'd shave your beard. Let's say, I would shave it. You would shave it? Definitely. You would change?
Starting point is 00:32:17 I mean, I would think it's a dumb rule, but if the rule is the rule, I'm not going to fight back over just a beard. So you wouldn't care enough to fight about it? No, I mean, I like my beard, but if, you know, if I needed to shave it. Does you look like a different person without a beard? Yeah, I actually accidentally shaved it all the way off a couple summers ago. I didn't even know who I was there for a while. But, I mean, if I were somewhere where I needed to do it, I could part ways. I would have been perfect for the Yankees.
Starting point is 00:32:39 I don't really grow facial hair to begin. You can't grow it. Well, I can, but it's just not nice. But it's like patchy. It's kind of patchy. It's kind of like the Johnny Depp look. Yeah. If this white keeps coming in, I'm going to have to show the beard.
Starting point is 00:32:50 It adds about 15 years to me with these white hairs. Yeah, it's harder. I have the same problem. You get white a lot quicker on your face than you do on top. Who's up next? Steve is up next. Steve, go ahead, Steve. You know, Matt, I'm a shot today that you are.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Steve. I can't hear you. Are you on Wi-Fi or something? Do you hear me now? Yeah. I mean, I love you all, but it's a phone. Do we not know how to work them? Go ahead. Man, that hurt, man. Well, I love you, Steve. Steve, I love you. You've called the show forever, but you know you have to talk into the phone in order for it to work. It's a pretty simple product.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Well, I'm sorry. I feel bad now. It's okay. Don't feel bad. It's all. The cats are going. The cats are going. I'm just kidding, man. Please, please. I'm sorry about the phone. I'm sorry about the phone, really.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Okay, Steve. We're good. We're good. So what you're saying is you're sorry about the phone. Is that his call? Go ahead, Steve. He's gone. He just wanted to call in to say, sorry about his bad phone connection.
Starting point is 00:34:05 No, bad for Steve. Wow. Steve went up for the layup and you swatted it into the cheap seats. I did not do anything. I just, we couldn't hear it. Any other colors you want to rose? Who's next? All right, I'm sorry, Steve.
Starting point is 00:34:19 You know I love you, but... I agree with you. If you're going to call a radio show, at least have a good connection. Yeah, 859-28027. We talked about this yesterday. I want your take on. So the new SEC football schedule with the nine games, then maybe playing a Big Ten team.
Starting point is 00:34:37 Now let's talk Louisville. You're Mitch Barnhart. Let's assume this happens. Twelve games, nine of them against the SEC. every year you get randomly assigned a big 10 team those are 10 games you got two games left you're Mitch barnhart are you playing Louisville let me give you the ramifications of play in louisville you'll never have eight home games again if you play louisville you'll only have seven so you know right now we have seven one year eight the next year we will only have seven because we won't be
Starting point is 00:35:08 able to ever get eight second it will be a potential loss so if you want to get to the You go from basically two definite wins to one and maybe a loss. And then third, revenue-wise, it's going to hurt you because you'll go from a guaranteed revenue game to only every other year a revenue game. But it's also your rival and a team your fans want to see you play. Are you playing Louisville? I think if you're Mitch Barnhart, your duty is to make money for the athletic program and you want those home games.
Starting point is 00:35:42 I think you want those two home games every year, and I think that outweighs playing Louisville your rival. So you're going to – That's not me. That's Mitch Barnhart. I'm making you the athletic director. You are athletic director, Ryan Limit. Are you canceling the deck game?
Starting point is 00:35:58 Don't put it on Mitch. It's on your shoulders. You've got to make a decision. Are you canceling the game? If it's for me and I'm the athletic director, there's no way I'm canceling that game. So where you coming up? He's gone from here to here.
Starting point is 00:36:10 Well, I gave you Mitch Barnhart's philosophy. for the first one. Mitch Barhart does not want to give away his two home games. Where are you coming up with the extra money? Well, I'm going to do it. I'm going to dance naked or something and raise some money for everybody. I don't know how many people are going to pay for Mitch Barnhart to be naked. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:36:26 No, seriously, you're losing, if you play Louisville, let's say, I don't know what the number is, but you're losing like $5 million probably at home. That's a lot. Where are you making it up? Hopefully you make it up in your home game. You get good crowds and make it up that way. All right, that's not. Balancing the budget is not hope, but what are you doing?
Starting point is 00:36:47 We're going to do some fundraising. We're going to get that money back one way or another. Here's the thing. You do not cancel that Louisville game. That is your biggest rival. If you only play one game of season, you've got to play Louisville. I'm not going to run scared from them. We play them.
Starting point is 00:37:00 Drew? You know me? I think I might be the biggest Louisville hater that breathes, but I think it would have to go. I mean, my favorite memories are Stevie getting loose and Lamar fumbling. But just if you're out in an SEC, game and all the other stuff going on. I know we don't love those cupcake opponents,
Starting point is 00:37:17 but you've got to have a couple of them for home games and to give your guys somewhat of a game that's not as emotional. So I think I would have to cut ties with it. Let me ask you all, again, put yourself in the shoes of Mitch Barnhart. Obviously, we would all like to see us play Louisville. But if you had to make that decision, how many of you are going to continue playing Louisville, like Ryan and Shannon? How many of you are canceling the game?
Starting point is 00:37:40 So it's about 60-40 play. I think this is going to be a tough decision. I will say, Ryan, if they adopt them, they're going to do it in the next couple of weeks. They'll either do it or not. If they adopt this nine-game schedule plus a game against the Big Ten, the Louisville game's going away, I think. And that will be, that will stink, at least for me, but I think it's almost inevitable.
Starting point is 00:38:05 Because we feel that in our heart. We want to play Louisville. Mitch Barnard is looking at it as a business side of it. He knows the advantage of playing those two home games. That's what's going to happen. If they go to nine games, we're going to lose the Louisville game. I did hear Nick Saban say, Drew, though, that he thinks if you do the schedule like this where the conference play is the only thing that decides who goes to the playoff, he said at that point, he thinks if he was a coach of Alabama, he'd only want to play good teams. Because it doesn't hurt you.
Starting point is 00:38:33 And he was like, why not play exciting games? He was like, I'd only want to play good teams. So, I mean, there might be some teams that actually would continue a game like Louisville. I don't think Mitch is one of them, though. Well, that format they're talking about where the postseason is only your conference games that matter, then I could be talked into keeping it. But as it is now, and I even thought this before the Big Ten stuff, just going to nine alone, I thought they're going to part ways with it.
Starting point is 00:38:55 And then any time Stoops has been asked about it on the rare occasion, Mitch Barnhart speaks, they both sound like it's not going to last. Here's the thing I don't. This will be something we will spend a lot more time talking about after the basketball season ends. I don't think people realize what a budget crisis Kentucky athletics is going to be in in the next few months. Like the people that give big money to that school, they're probably going to be going to them on their hands and knees.
Starting point is 00:39:25 This next year, and it's not just Kentucky, this is going to be all over the country, but I know it's the case with Kentucky. Imagine you create a budget. Kentucky was one of the very few athletic departments in the country that made money, and all of a sudden they just say, say $22 million more of expenses are coming.
Starting point is 00:39:42 Wow. Plus, you got to pay off this settlement, which was like another $30 million before. I just think, I don't really know what these schools are going to do. Where's that money coming from? That's a great question. I don't know. I mean, I think Louisville, I've made this prediction before, I'm going to make it again. Louisville's going to be the first school in the country to take private equity money in their athletic department.
Starting point is 00:40:07 You wait and see. It's coming. Louisville's going to end up getting an investor to invest and take a percentage of the profits of U of U of L.S. That is coming. I don't think Kentucky will ever do that, but I do think it's coming for Louisville. Because these ACC schools, now imagine you had to do it and you were getting $20 million less a year in revenue than the SEC, because that's what's happening for these schools. If you're those schools, you're going to have to take that.
Starting point is 00:40:29 If you're Louisville, you're going to have to take that. That's why when I see Louisville offering all these kids huge NIO money, I'm like, where are you getting this? Like, I, I, Louisville doesn't have anybody go their games now. Like, where are they getting this money? I don't understand. And the hater in me, as I'm canceling, the Louisville game would wave and say, go buy and disappear into obscurity because you don't have a conference that matters, or money. Yeah, I don't know how they're going to do it.

And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:42:49 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:43:45 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:44:03 Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

Starting point is 00:45:58 One person writes, Matt, why are you so mean to the callers? I feel like you're too mean to your audience. I just bought everybody here a margarita. What else do they want? The people here love you today. They really happen to you today. Steve's one of my favorite callers. Steve, you know that, but we just got to get your phone to work.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Before we go to the phones, we did trivia last night. Let me try a couple of these on you. Okay, all. First of all, you hear a lot about spending in the government. I said, what are the eight things we spend the most money on in the federal government, Ryan? Let's see if you know. What is the one thing we spend the most money twice as much as we spend on anything else in the federal government? What is it?
Starting point is 00:46:40 The military? That's actually third. Ten years ago, the military was first, but it's not even close to first now. What's first? Anybody know? This is what none of us will ever get it. Social Security. Everybody lives too long.
Starting point is 00:46:58 Well, no, not too long. I want everybody to live a long time. But they live a lot longer than we thought they would when we created the program. So Social Security is first. Do we know, can anybody else guess anything else? Defense was third. Get anything else in the top eight? Space program.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Somebody say Medicare? Medicare second. So Social Security's first. Medicare second. We spend $950 billion on care for people 65 or older when it comes to Social Security and Medicare. Defense is third. What else? Diet Coke
Starting point is 00:47:30 Diet Coke would be high for me But it's not Anybody know what's fourth What's the fourth thing we spend the most money on? Interest on the debt Well done People don't realize Interest on the debt
Starting point is 00:47:42 And in 10 years Interest on the debt Will be our second biggest thing We spend money on So one thing That's there might be a little argument We should get the debt down a little bit What's fifth?
Starting point is 00:47:54 What else would we What are two other things you think of When you think of the government Anybody? Who do we take care of from the government? Who do we spend money on? Veterans. Veterans is fifth.
Starting point is 00:48:08 And then what's sixth? Medicaid, which is basically health care for poor people. And then it's a huge drop to everything else. But those are the six things where we spend by far the most money. Anybody get all those correct last night? A lot of people would get like five of those. Almost nobody said interest on the debt. They just don't think of that.
Starting point is 00:48:29 I wouldn't know of that. Who said that over here, somebody? Well done. Are you an accountant or were you at trivia last night? All right. Let me do some ages. I always like to do ages. All these are good.
Starting point is 00:48:40 You get it correct if you're two years young or two years old. So you have a four-year range. How old is Elon Musk? 42? I'll say 48. 49. He acts like he's in his 40s, but he's 53. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:48:58 Elon Musk. How old is Kareem, Kareem, Kareem, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? He is, he is 70, he's 81. Wow, 78. 77. You two would have gotten it. He is 77 years old. Drew gets it exactly right.
Starting point is 00:49:17 Rand Paul, how old's Rand Paul? Oh, Lord. Rand Paul. 58. He's older than that. 63. I don't know. You've got to be kind of young to fight your neighbor, right?
Starting point is 00:49:27 Now I go 54. Shannon's good at this. 62. Shannon gets that one. Finally, I gave you Ramp Paul. How old is Rupol? Rupal. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Is that his dad or is that the entertainer? That's his brother, Rand Paul and Rupal. Rupal. I have not thought of that name in years. Rupal is 66. 66. How old do you think? 69.
Starting point is 00:49:49 62. You two would have gotten 64 is Rupal. So there you go. Those are the kind of questions you get it. You get it true. I've learned a lot on this. this segment here. That's what we tried to do. Who's up next? Sarah is up next. Sarah, go ahead, Sarah. Hey, guys, happy Friday. So speaking of law, I had a UK law student give me two
Starting point is 00:50:10 takes last night, and I want y'all's opinion on them. Okay. First one is that we'll never win anything with Mark Pope. False. So I don't know if he's been asleep for six months or what, but false. The second one is that, okay. Yeah, what's the second one? Oh, sorry, I thought you said pause. second one is that it's, Cal was still here. He would have the same record as Mark Pope has here
Starting point is 00:50:37 with whatever team he, you know, had, so AKA Arkansas team. Not the record he has in Arkansas, but the record that's... And he doubled and tripled down on it, and I don't get it. Yeah, well, both points are stupid, all right? So Mark Pope is going, Mark Pope will win here,
Starting point is 00:50:53 I think. Now, I mean, I don't know what information anybody would have to suggest that he won't win here. Let's just take BYU. He was a four-seed last year at BYU. Are they going to be a four-seat this year, Drew? BYU? Yeah. No. No.
Starting point is 00:51:09 So while the new coach may end up good, Mark Pope was better than what came back. But the CaliPerry thing is easy. He has the team he would have had here there except the team here might be worse because I don't know if we would have gotten John L. Davis. I don't know if
Starting point is 00:51:25 we would have gotten John L. Davis, even though he hasn't been great. Addu Thierro, had already said he was going to transfer from here. And he's the best player on that Arkansas team. So that Arkansas team drew is 15 and 11. And yes, they won the game here, but they've had a worse season. I don't know how anybody could think we'd be better off this year with Cal. I think it's silly to say Pope won't win anything.
Starting point is 00:51:48 Appreciate the call. It's weird to say Pope won't win anything. But if you want to be a hater, be a hater. But I don't know how you can look at Cal's results when he has some of the players he'd have here. They had a much easier non-conference schedule, by the way. Much easy. I think it would be significantly worse. Let me ask you all this.
Starting point is 00:52:03 Let's say John Caliperi, we're the coach here right now, and he was 15 and 11 here. Do you think the vibes would be positive around this place? Do you think the crowds would be good? I mean, there's something about change that just leads people to give a little bit of the benefit of the doubt. He would have gotten Ryan no benefit of the doubt this year. Yeah, the vibe and the crowds were already going down in his last two years. Remember how wet it was last year? He doubles down and has that again this year.
Starting point is 00:52:30 It's bad. Imagine if we'd lost some of the games that he lost there here. Forget it. Well, they'd be Duke with veterans and leadership. He would have had all those freshmen. You would have lost a dude. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends.
