Welcome to Hour 2
of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by
Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's
Matt Jones. Welcome
back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio.
859-280-2287.
Old Spaghetti Factory.
Shannon opened August.
23rd, 1985, according to Corey Price.
The amount of people in the text machine that have said they've eaten there in the last month
shows me why it's still open.
Really? That many people, how?
Yeah. One person says, Matt, I went last week because my mother-in-law wanted to go.
I hadn't been in there since the 80s, and it looks exactly the same.
But it was packed. And I have to say the food was really good.
Yeah, the atmosphere there is really cool, too. I mean, that's, I think that's the main drawl.
Yeah, one person writes, Matt, I went back to Old Spaghetti Factory about a month ago after an event at the Yom Center.
The line was out the door.
We waited, and I have to say it was worth it.
Wow.
It's kind of cool that the old staple was still doing good business down there.
I would say after today, it's going to be doing a lot better.
There was a time that it was the only restaurant, Ryan, in downtown Louisville,
or at least one of the very few that I remember, back before Jerry Abrasson, when downtown Louisville was kind of just dead dead.
there still was an old spaghetti factory.
But I just thought that things changed.
It was.
And now, you know, downtown's gone down a little bit in the last few years,
but there's a lot more places now.
And yet there it goes.
Still persevering.
A lot of places down here have come and gone over the years.
Yeah.
Even here at Four Street Live specifically.
Yeah.
That place still around.
All right, let's do a couple things real quick.
Ryan, first of all, we got to mention,
I mentioned on the pregame show,
we got to mention here, Ellie De La Cruz.
It's the summer of Ellie.
It's the summer of Ellie.
Okay.
It's going to be the summer of the Reds?
It's going to be the summer of Ellie and the Reds.
He gets up for spring training.
What?
It doesn't matter.
It's split squad.
We're not, we ain't worried.
You don't try to win in spring training.
We're winning when it counts.
You need both squads.
Both squads are going to be good.
It doesn't matter.
We have Ellie.
Ellie De La MVP.
Okay.
He gets up.
Spring training, first at bat.
Left handed.
Home run.
Second of bat.
Right-handed.
Home run.
Are you ready for the summer of Ellie?
The dude is awesome.
I mean, I do like watching him play.
There's no doubt about it.
Come on, man.
It's the Reds.
Summer of Ellie.
You'll be out of the playoffs by the end of April.
You're out of the playoffs right now.
Summer of Ellie.
They still lost the game.
Doesn't Matt?
No, they won that one.
That's the one game they won this.
They won Ellie's game.
He's only played one game.
Oh, okay.
Who cares if they play Joe Thursbury?
They've got Ellie when he plays.
Drew.
you got to be excited about my man.
Two bat, two at-bats, two home runs.
I mean, I'm excited about a lot of things.
Red's not in the conversation,
but I do love the joy you have that starts about right now,
and we collectively hear it go away by June.
So we're just going to run that.
A couple of years ago, it was over in May.
I'm more impressed with Carson Hanson.
Yeah, I don't know who that is, but we do know who Ellie Dayla Cruz is.
He plays for Kentucky baseball, and he hit two long lines and three pitches.
Same thing.
Carson Hanson is the L.A. Dela Cruz of UK baseball.
They got a sweep this weekend, by the way, over Belmont.
Congratulations to them.
Second, Jay Lucas.
All right, for those of you longtime KSR people, you know what Jay Lucas means.
It means a lot to this.
To me, Jay Lucas.
There are three turning points for KSR's success.
And turning point one is Patrick Patterson and Jay Lucas.
and we all know Patrick Patterson.
Jay Lucas gets lost because he didn't come here.
But Jay Lucas was crucial in KSR's success.
Jay Lucas was really liked us more than he liked than even Patterson did.
Jay Lucas was like the person who got KSR on the recruiting map.
And yesterday it was reported, he'll be the next head coach at Miami.
I cannot believe, Ryan Lemon, that I'm old enough, that Jay Lucas, who I watched play as a junior in high school,
and who sat with me and Chris Mosley and talked about video games,
is now old enough to become the head coach of a major Division I university.
Yeah, a major program that's had great success, and he's stepping in there.
He's a guy that you could step up to him right now, you and him, and not miss a beat, I think,
because he had that connection from all those years ago.
Yeah, we always knew.
I mean, even when he was, you know, for the year he was here, right?
Yeah.
He's just, like, I have a special spot in my heart for that guy,
even though I don't know him well anymore,
but we could talk for the fact that he is old enough, Drew,
to be coaching Division I college team is wild to me.
Wild.
Three years ago he was my neighbor.
I'd pass him on the sidewalk with his kids and nod,
and now he's the head coach.
Miami. Imagine going from living by me to now you're the head coach of Miami University.
What a climb. Yeah, Masterson Station to South Beach. It's a normal move.
When I saw that thing, I mean, he deserves a job. But when I saw that thing come across the
news, I couldn't believe it. Like, I cannot believe. The young people don't realize
what a big deal Patrick Patterson, Jay Lucas was during that recruitment. I would say to you,
In my years of doing this, this is a, the second biggest, first biggest question I've ever been asked was last year throughout the year is Cal Perry gone.
That's the question I've been asked the most.
But the second most question I was ever asked is what's happening with Patterson and Lucas.
It was crazy.
It was wild.
And you guys were at the forefront of you.
You guys only one that had any good information.
Well, he would only talk to us.
Yeah.
But what's happening with Patterson and Lucas?
And Lucas wasn't even that good.
But we were so desperate.
And it was right at the moment when the internet became how, like, it was a perfect storm, Ryan.
It was when internet and recruiting became like widespread was like right that year.
And somehow this little blog, the only people that had information on those two guys came from you guys.
So what's happening with Patterson and Lucas?
Yep.
It was a big deal.
And you know what's crazy?
Patrick Patterson was only rank.
like 16th, but to us he was like the number one recruit we've ever had there for a while.
It's going to make you sad. Some breaking news here, Shannon. Go ahead.
Uh-oh, what?
Roney-na-na!
I believe you like this guy. Lester Holt is stepping down from NBC Nightly News.
I do like Lester Holt. That's Ryan's guy, though.
Yeah.
That's my dateline intro guy. I hear Lester's voice every night.
I'm Lester Holt.
That's a terrible impression.
We met him at the Republican convention in Cleveland.
We met Lester Holt.
Yes.
You and I did.
We were walking and we met him.
We stopped and talked to him and just said hello.
So why is it you like?
So I thought it was Shannon.
It's you, Ryan, that likes Lester Hold a lot.
I think he's just a really good anchor and it seems to be very charismatic and I think
he's a guy I can hang out with.
Well, you can't know.
He can't hang out.
Okay.
I get all of it.
Why do you think you could hang out with?
Why would he want to hang out with you?
You know, former old TV guys?
You think you and he would be friends?
Sure.
Yeah.
I think we'd be friends.
I kind of think Ryan would creep less to hold out.
What do you think?
Probably so.
I wonder why he's retiring.
He's not that old.
He's got some good years.
He's only been doing that evening show for like 10 years.
10 years.
Well, I mean, this is a weird time.
First of all, you say he's not that old.
He's probably in his 60s, isn't he?
That's not that old.
People might want to do something else with their life.
65.
Yeah, 65.
I'm not going to be doing this.
Not everybody wants to be like you in the spotlight for the last month.
moment of their lives.
Ryan won't.
Ride will never give it up.
Bride will be 84 filling in for Dick Gabriel.
I will.
Ryan, you're going to come in.
Yeah, let's go to Brock.
What's up, Brock?
Hey, guys.
You talked about the minutes earlier, and I looked at it.
I know the injuries skew it, but the six guys you mentioned you wanted to play
180 minutes.
This year, if you add them up, they're at 155.
It's not that far.
But that, no, I disagree.
That 25 is huge.
because that 25 tends to be when we give up a 10-0 run.
Right, like 155 sounds like a lot.
I want it to be 180 or 175 because I genuinely think the difference between 155
and maybe I'm exaggerating with 180, but 170, 175 might be the difference between winning a game and losing the game.
Yes, I understand that.
But here's the most important thing that I saw.
the last three games
Perry, Noah and Chandler
are averaging 59 minutes between the three of us.
I love those guys, but that's too many.
That's too many.
Now, to be fair, though, we've got these injuries.
Okay?
So like that.
That was my point.
Yeah.
So to be fair to those guys, like we've got these injuries.
But the reality is, and I appreciate the call,
he's right about that.
Perry, Noah and Chandler can't play 60 of the 200 minutes this year, Drew, and us be very, very successful.
And with Perry back to our point earlier about you just have to change what you think of this team right now with them being so limited.
If we go back to April when Pope is on that podium and he waves at Perry in the crowd,
if someone told you Perry would play 30 minutes a game in February in the SEC,
you would think what in the hell is about to happen?
I mean, this is just such unique circumstances that they've fallen into.
too. He's done a decent job.
Yeah, let me say about him.
I thought he played pretty well Saturday.
He cannot guard the Alabama guards.
Maybe one day, but that day is not today.
But he scored in double digits.
I thought he played hard.
I thought he wasn't scared.
So I actually give Perry an A for effort, but also like, I thought he played well, right.
I thought he did about as good as he could have done, to be honest.
Yeah, in a hostile environment against some of the best guards in a conference.
You go down there and you hold your own as a true freshman.
I was kind of proud of him.
I know he didn't shoot the ball particularly great,
but he did a lot of other things I thought he did really well.
He actually finished at the rim.
He did.
He did.
He had a career high with four steals, so he was playing a little defense.
He did that.
That's exactly right.
Mike, go ahead, Mike.
He's good at like coming, like a guy,
he's good at like when a guy drives.
It's not his man reaching in and getting the ball.
I think something he's really, he's got a knack for that.
Mike, go ahead, Mike.
you know
one thing
you know
I used to get
you know
a little agitated
sometimes
the cow
would take unfair criticism
and
the line up thing
was real
and so
it is so
with Mark Pope
and it
it infuriates me
people get mad
when you say
that Amari
should play more
I mean
it's an obvious
thing
if you go back
and look
I bet you
most of those
12-0 runs
are with Garrison
on the floor
and
I think, and to that point, I don't care how much Perry and Noah play.
I just want to marry playing 30 plus.
I think you've got to play him every minute you can.
And I realize he's doing a lot more, and he could probably play more with Butler there.
But sometimes you just got to suck it up to play because I know, you know,
they played Randall 38 minutes in that year they raised a good.
That's exactly right.
I'm with you on that.
Julius Randall is a perfect example.
I appreciate the call.
That team was struggling, and the only way they were going to win is Julius Randall playing
a lot of minutes, so he played like 37 minutes a game.
He drugged that team to final four.
He drug that team, especially through the regular season, because we were not good during
a regular season.
And Randall won us games to get us into the tournament, and then Aaron Harrison, some of those
guys started playing really well.
I will say this about Amari.
He did go back to some bad turnover.
He did.
But you know what?
I'll take it.
I mean, can we talk about the worst play?
I mean, you know what I'm going to say.
When Garrison got that rebound
and drove all the way down the court by himself.
Yeah.
Shannon, I nearly, if there was a live camera on me,
I would have exploded.
What did he think was going to happen?
I mean, I literally, from the moment he got the ball screamed,
pass, pass, pass, pass, pass.
No pass.
But I do like he can make threes,
but like it's a big,
difference. It's a big difference. Volunteers of America, Mid States is part of Volunteers

The question is, how do you conquer them?
On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness,
professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them
and the mindset that keeps them going.
From the WNBA standout, Kate Martin, and rising hockey star, Layla Edwards.

my girl can't. Like, I've never understood that.
Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.

Don't let that be the reason you don't do it.

Welcome back.
Talking Sports Radio. Text Machine, 772, 774-745-24.
I feel like you've played this song a lot recently. Is there a reason?
I have not played this song in probably a year.
Isn't this the one with the girl that dances on the bus?
I don't know if it's this song or not.
I thought we just talked about that, but you may be right.
859-28027. One person writes,
Matt, tell Shannon the Braves are 0-and-2 in spring training and he can eat it.
I'm not the one bragging about World Series
over there needs to eat it
give me some ketchup
that would be
that would be nice
one person writes Matt what do you think about the Eagles
refusing to go to the White House
I don't like it I think you should go
it's not about the president
it's about the thing
but you know
it is what it is I think you're going to see that happen
more and more
so what if you're a player for the Eagles
and you actually want to go.
You can't just go on your own.
Maybe you could.
Just take a tour by yourself.
Yeah.
They probably take a vote or something.
Yeah.
You know, I would assume.
I mean, I know when Trump was president last time,
maybe the Warriors didn't go.
I think one of the hockey teams maybe didn't go when Biden was president.
But, you know,
I think you want to go to the White House just because the White House.
Yeah, I think you should go.
I mean, to me, if you don't want,
if, like, you really have that been.
of an objection, you go and then maybe when it comes time for the photo where they hold up
the jersey, you just sneak out the back or something. You went to the White House when Trump
president. Of course, I would go. But I believe in institutions. I think what has what has
become normal now is on the right and the left, a lot of people hate institutions. They hate,
they think about the deep state and all this. I believe that like that office is more important
than anyone in it. But people just don't believe that anymore. Like, and I, and I,
I hate that. I think that's a negative. But that's a different point. If I were them,
I would go. But, you know, what are you going to do? I'll tell you what else I would do.
I would go to Omaha and watch the Outrunners, Shannon.
Those guys had a great weekend. Let me tell you something. I know you all, almost everybody in here
doesn't know who the Outrunners are. You need to look them up. They were former wrestlers with
OVW. They were wrestlers when I came in. To put it, a bigger thing, Drew, is when we talk about
Shannon's mysterious Christmas party that he doesn't invite us to,
one of the people that goes, and there's only like six or seven,
is one of the outrunners.
These are Shannon's BFS.
These are Shannon's boys.
But when I came to OVW, like, they're in their 40s.
They're both really nice guys.
The one guy is it Turbo has been really nice to me.
Yeah.
They've both been nice to me.
I like them both.
Well, Shiloh, I mean, he still comes to OVW just behind the scenes.
Yes, he'll just be there.
on a Thursday night.
Yes.
So that Shiloh and Turv.
So anyway, long story short,
these two guys in their 40s
decide to change their gimmick,
make themselves like crazy,
like Hulk Hogan guys.
They spin in circles.
They've taken off now amazingly.
They're in AEW.
And Omaha,
the Omaha basketball team,
invites them to come give their pregame speech.
Now, Shannon,
I am fascinated as to how that happened.
Yeah.
How did they end up together?
I don't know.
Maybe there were fans
of the Outrunner.
The pregame speech, they show up in little mid-riff shirts with their muscles out, and they get up there and the name of the speech was, succeeding requires success.
Nothing succeeds like success.
Nothing succeeds like success.
Come on.
What an amazing title.
And what did I tell you you had to do?
He said, you got a win to beat your opponent.
He said you have to win to beat your opponent.
His starting speech started with this sentence, which might be my favorite sentence,
anyone's ever uttered.
If you're anything like me, and I know I am.
What a great sentence.
If you're anything like me and I know I am.
So they give the speech to the Omaha basketball team.
Omaha team goes out that night and wins.
When the game is over, they go into the locker room to celebrate with the team.
They've clinched a share of the summit title.
And in one of the great videos that's ever existed,
the team and the outrunners just beat up a trash can.
I don't know what that poor trash can did.
What did the trash can do to those people?
It's so cool to see all these players so excited with these guys.
I have to tell you, Ryan, I love that those videos are on my social media,
but it's one of my favorite things I've ever seen.
The videos are fantastic.
Both of them.
That locker room video at the end, though, is one of my favorites.
These guys, like you said, in their 40s, receding hairlines,
spinning in circles.
One guy had a receding hairline.
They're spinning in circles and they're wearing rainbow-colored clothes.
They go to Shannon's Christmas party.
He doesn't even invite us, and he invites the Outrunners.
Well, you don't come in and spin and beat up my garbage can.
Well, I will next year because nothing succeeds like success.
That's right.
Shout out to the Outrors, and now I'm now a huge Omaha basketball fan.
I am like I'm all in on Omaha from now on.
Let's go to PT.
What's up, PT?
Hey, thanks for taking my call.
And Shannon, thanks for the invite to the Christmas party last year.
Okay, stop.
I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I do want to talk about the minutes thing.
And I'm really, like, I look at Alamador's line of all zeros, but 10 minutes,
and think what would have happened if Carr and Amari had gotten those 10 minutes,
how the game would have looked different.
So I agree, we need to pare down the line up a little bit and just played, you know,
six or seven like Kalapari did.
And then the other thing, I thought it was classless of the U.K.,
or the Alabama fans to chant USA, USA.
But I don't really expect much from a student section led by T.
Mu, Karate Kid.
And, you know, they're classless to begin with.
So that's what you're.
I mean, they're students.
Students are going to do stuff.
What I appreciate the call.
I just, I didn't love it.
It's not the worst thing in the world.
Like, I'm not going to go nuts about it.
I just didn't love it.
Probably part of it, Drew, is I just want to beat them, right?
right? You know, I mean, I just wanted to beat them. And Amari missed those two free throws, too.
Yeah, otherwise, at the free throw line, though, Amari, the last two games has been hot. He didn't
miss against Vanity. That's the only two he missed, I think. Yeah, he had a great night at the line.
And with his backup, we're all pulling for Brandon Garrison, but he just seems to have completely
reverted since earlier in the year. I mean, you mentioned the turnover he had, but, you know,
adding to the more Amari argument, it's just a huge gap at that position right now, going to the bench.
Let's go to Jack.
What's up, Jack?
Not much.
Thanks, Matt, for taking my call.
I got two things.
One, like, when we talk about football, we say, you know, there's one play that could change the outcome of a game.
But that non-call against Perry when he shot his three and when Otega got the, I don't know if he did his fingertips or what he did, that was a crucial part.
and if car doesn't get a couple of quick fouls, then, I mean, that really hurt us.
But Grant Nelson got a couple.
I mean, to be fair, I'm not trying to take up for the refs, but Grant Nelson got two thousand three minutes.
Yeah, that's true.
That's true.
Well, that was one point.
And then another point, I didn't catch your post game.
I know I listened to Ryan and there were people down and poke.
I don't like the out, you know, the change of guard or whatever change.
the lineup all at once, but if it wasn't for him playing Chandler, Noah, and Perry at the beginning
of the game, or beginning of the season, then we're not getting the play that we're getting
right now from them, which is a lot better.
Well, I don't think anybody was complaining about them playing at the beginning of the year.
I mean, I appreciate the call at the end of the year.
We were playing teams that were not good.
Where did he listen to you, Ryan?
Have you done a show since then?
I think he's talking about the Texas post-game show.
We had a caller call in and said he's done with Pope.
Pope's not the right guy.
Yeah, that's dumb.
I think Pope's done a very good job.
You can think somebody's done a very good job, which I do,
and still say I would still do this rather than this.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
We'll take a break.
Be right back.
KSR.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J.
He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
These guys are at Bourbon and Beyond, right?
They are. Yeah. A lot of great bands from the 90s will be there.
Is it the same lineup? Is it this dude, the weird-looking guy?
I'm not really sure. I know the band, but I don't know like the members of the band.
Well, I mean, that one dude looked.
So we're talking about spin doctors for those of you all podcasts.
Like the one dude looked ridiculous. Do you remember Ryan what the lead singer of the spin doctors look like?
No, I was trying to remember what he looked like.
He had red hair and a beard and he was like, does nobody remember what this guy looked like?
He was the lead singer?
Yeah, he had a very distinct look, if I remember correctly.
I can't even remember.
I want to see them.
It's good. Bourbon Beyond's got a good lineup.
Ryan, I yesterday got surprised during the ESPN show, and it made me so happy.
I thought you would appreciate this.
Tell me about it.
So when we, especially after the football, we lead in to an NBA game every day.
Okay.
So every Sunday, like we end at either 12, 30, or 1, and we go off to an NBA game now.
we'll do that for the next couple months.
And usually we get one of the announcers for the game as a guest before we
on the show.
But they never tell us who it is.
So sometimes it's PJ Carlissimo.
It's been Mike Breen.
It's been various people.
So we're like a minute out from my segment at noon.
And the producer goes, Kalina Azabuki is on, is on.
Really?
And I went, what?
I was like Kalina Azabuki.
And he goes, yeah, he's doing the game on radio.
and I said for ESPN?
He's like, yeah, he's done it for two years.
I had no idea, by the way, that Clint Ozabuki was doing ESPN games.
Did you know that?
Well, I knew he was doing color on the Golden State.
Yeah, but this is ESPN.
This is the nationally ESP.
I knew he's been doing Golden State for a decade, but did you know he was doing ESPN?
Nope, I sure didn't.
I had no idea.
So I didn't really even have time to process it, Ryan.
And then they come on and I just immediately talked to Kalina.
I'm like, Clint Osabuki, you remember when you got that dunk against
Vandy in 2003.
Still the best dunk I've seen live
and he was like, he was clearly
surprised Drew because I don't think he knew
that a guy from Kentucky was going to interview
him. And I go,
wait a minute, I do Kentucky Sports Radio.
And so I just kind of fanboid
with Kalina Azabuki for like three or four minutes.
As you should. You should be like
doing the Chris Farley S&L. Do you remember when?
All Kentucky questions, completely
ignoring his current job. Yeah, who cares?
You remember when the ball bounced on the rim
against Michigan State and then it went in?
Remember Tubby's famous line about him?
Yeah, but they didn't, I mentioned that in the break,
and the producer said, don't say that on the show.
So I didn't.
But it was very cool to, I didn't know.
That is kind of cool.
You know, we always talk about former Kentucky guys in the media.
Is he the biggest former Kentucky player in the media?
He is now.
I don't think there's any doubt right now.
Who's bigger?
There isn't one.
We don't have anybody that does anything.
I don't think so.
So like his name doesn't get brought up in it, but I think that's true.
He left school early, didn't get drafted, and still ended up having a decent career in the NBA.
He did, and now has been doing Warriors games for 10 years.
He does the pregame show for him, and now I think he's even on the game broadcast.
UK women lose to LSU.
Drew, they got up 16 in the first half and were rolling, gave Kim Mulkey a stink face,
and then LSU just kind of blew through in the second half.
We cut it to one late, but we're not able to beat them.
No, the one positive was the camera panning to Kim Malky after that Kentucky basket
was truly unbelievable camera work.
So kudos to ever frame that up.
But it hurt watching them kind of lose down the stretch.
They even had an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to retake the lead,
but then LSU took it right back in one.
Kentucky shot like 15% from three.
I think that tells the story.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, their best players, mostly all of them were cold.
So rough night on the day, even though there's one more home game left,
that was the Senior Day game for George A. Moore and Deja Lawrence,
two players that have been awesome otherwise this year.
Well, it was a good game.
Kentucky is still four-seed in the SEC tournament.
Hopefully they're able to hold that.
Malky had great things to say about Kenny Brooks after the game.
He thinks not only is he a great coach, said like he's one of the best people in the profession.
and then she said,
why don't they play this game in Rupp Arena?
She was like, why do they play here?
Why don't they play in Rupp?
And then she goes, I think Big Blue Nation could fill it up.
And I was like, well, that's a little bit of stir in the pot.
But, you know, they used to play one game a year there.
I'm kind of surprised they didn't do that this year.
I think if they had played that LSU game in Rup,
you wouldn't have filled it,
but you might have gotten like 15,000 people there.
They always picked one game and it would be a high profile game,
like Louisville or T.
Tennessee or somebody, and the crowd would pretty much pack it.
Yeah.
One thing about Kenny's team, they got to get more physical.
These teams, like, you can tell, it's kind of a very similar thing, Drew to our men's
basketball team.
They just, the physicality is not something they enjoy.
Yeah, we first saw that when they made the jump from the top, or bottom tier to the top
tier playing Texas a week or two ago.
And again, with LSU, I don't remember the final rebounding numbers, but it seemed
pretty lopsided.
Really, it was just the third quarter killed him.
What was it like 24 to 6 or something?
It was crazy, yeah.
10 points.
Yeah, the third quarter completely determined the game.
Our tall girls are very thin.
And when they get into a rebounding battle, they just get it taken from them a lot of the time.
Let's go to Boyce.
Go ahead, boys.
Matt, I don't know, but I think our two centers and our two forwards is going to have,
They haven't been great as why we're not blocking shots.
I think we had Vanderbilt against Vanderbilt.
We had seven.
We got to be more aggressive.
But I haven't been impressed with our two centers and our two forwards.
I disagree with you.
I appreciate the call.
I think Amari, especially in the last little bit, has been really, really good.
Andrew Carr played well, Ryan.
I mean, he had 17, and he kind of looks like we're back to the Andrew car from the beginning of the year.
That's the Andrew car.
I think we thought we were going to get all year long coming out, hitting threes, scoring in traffic in the lane.
I mean, showing some confidence with his shot.
I think that's the guy I thought we'd have all season.
Behind him, Ansley Almanor almost had another trillion, though.
Not a good game for him.
What happened to him?
He didn't how he played.
He had zero across the board except for one missed three in about 10 or 11 minutes.
So not a good game from Ansley.
Yeah. I mean, they need 10 good minutes from him.
And they haven't, you know, two of the last three games, he haven't had it.
He did have a good game against Vandy. Who's next?
You tell me.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Who do you want to be next?
Well, I mean, you said to pick boys, so I'll go to Seth. Go ahead, Seth.
Yeah, Travis Perry in the game on Saturday had a nice little move driving to the basket,
and he slowed up and backed in the guy on him.
He got an and one out of it.
He did, yes.
That kind of raised my eyebrows saying, you know,
he could maximize his potential maybe over the course of his career.
My question is, am I right in thinking he has a higher ceiling than Jared Poulson?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now, let me say this about Pulsin.
He liked physicality and could play some defense.
Perry's a much better offensive player, but he's got.
got to get, and I appreciate the call.
I saw a picture of him last year, Drew,
and he was a senior in high school.
And he has put on muscle since then.
But he needs more muscle.
And I mean, I don't know what he can do about his lateral quickness.
Like that is, kind of is what it is.
But he's going to be a dude probably his whole career that's going to give up points.
So he's got to score.
And I did think that was one good thing we saw Saturday.
He only made one three, but he scored in double digits,
which showed he could score in other ways.
He went one for seven from three, which is not him at all, but you know you have cold days,
but I liked late in the game he cut to the basket wide open and Amari hit him for a layup.
It's things like that when you're not making threes.
You've got to find other ways to contribute and score, and he at least did that.
And I thought he did as best as he could on Mark Sears with all those fouls,
as I do that in quotation marks, with that flopping around he did.
I thought you know, you'd want to win and want him to play a little better.
But overall, I thought he did his best, given the circumstances, playing 30 minutes
and his third career start.
Yeah, and to be fair, Sears was one of the best players in the country.
So, you know, I mean...
All-American last year.
Yeah, right.
I mean, he does...
There's not a lot of people that can guard him,
and Travis isn't a great defender at all.
So I think he did the best he could on it, you know?
You got to think this year with Travis Perry having to guard,
Wade Taylor and Mark Sears and Hubbard and Ziegler,
all these top point guards,
it's just going to make him better for the rest of his career.
He was guarding Madisonville North Hopkins last year.
I love you, Maroons, but that's a big jump
from Region 2 to SEC on the road playing Alabama.
Yeah. In the championship game of the Sweet 16 last year, he was guarding my guy from
Harlan with the long hair. Now, that guy's good though. What's his name?
Reggie. Reggie. Reggie, yes.
Cottrell. They might make the Sweet 16 again.
Yeah, they got that Huff kid. He's good. Maddox Huff. He's still back. He was one of their
best players last year. District starts tonight. Postseason's here.
District is here. Who's scoring big in the NBA this year? Well, you are

Welcome back to Tegi Sports Radio.
Roberta,
Roberta Flack,
passed away, Ryan.
This is her.
She sang this song
which a lot of people
my generation know
from Lauren Hill.
She sang it first.
This is the original.
She was 87 years old.
She had Grammy winning hits,
including the first
time I ever saw your face just passed away this morning. She was discovered by Lexington's
own Les McCann. I don't know who Les McCann is, but that's an interesting little tidbit.
She was discovered by someone from Lexington. Now I want to know the whole story. How'd that happen?
Well, why don't you look it up? You're a journalist. I'll report back. He discovered her while
she was playing jazz in Washington, D.C. What was his job? He's a jazz guy. I'm reading all
this on the internet. I don't know it off the top of it. Okay. Yeah, I would have been impressed if you knew
that. Because like anyone could discover someone, Shannon, but it doesn't, they have to do something
about it. That's right. Yeah. They discover you. Nobody knows. Yeah. If you're nothing, then you can
discover somebody and it won't do them any good. A lot of people have been discovered and nobody's
heard about them. Yeah. It's a lot of, but Roberto, Rob, I keep saying Robert. Roberta Flag.
Roberta. Roberto. I keep saying Roberta. Roberta. Roberta flag.
Robertta
Roberta Flack
passed away
88
I said 87
88 years old
the Pope
Ryan is sick
yes
Pope is very sick
Hope he
gets better
and pulls through
they say he's a little better
today
but you know
we watched the movie
didn't we
about conclave
Conclave
did you think about that
when you saw the news
about when they all
get together
and pick the new Pope
and it's all
intrigue and all that. Have you been thinking about that? Because I know you like that
movie. Absolutely. I was thinking about that. Because that's the basis of the movie is true.
That's how they do it. You know, these Roman Catholic priests all gather to pick the new Pope.
So, you know, they fabricated the storyline, but that's still how they do it. Have you seen the,
have you all seen the movie, Drew, Shannon? I have not. Drew, did you say it? No, I have not.
I recommend it. It's nominated for Best Picture. Has a shot at winning. So Shannon, they all get together.
they bring, is it Cardinals? Is that right?
Is that right? I believe they're Cardinals.
They're Cardinals. They bring Cardinals from all over the world.
They bring them into one building. They take their phones.
They're not allowed to have any, not only any communication with the outside world.
They're not allowed, Shannon, to even know what's happening in the outside world.
Could you imagine that kind of life?
But it was just for like a week.
I mean, even for a week.
So for a week, though, no.
communication with the outside world and they are not allowed to leave until they come up with a pope.
And they have to get, what is it, Ryan, like 75% or something.
It was a very high number.
And this movie is all about like they have, all of them have secrets and there's intrigue.
And there's like, you know.
I would have my mind made up as soon as I walked in that building.
But some people do.
There's a lot of politics.
There's a lot of politics.
Because what if your guy drops out?
Yeah.
You know, and then somebody else drops in.
And then when they make their decision, don't they send smoke up to the chimney?
So at the end of the every day, if they don't have a pope, they send out black smoke.
Oh.
But if they have a pope, they send out white smoke.
Wow.
Do you imagine gathering around that house?
Just waiting to see what's coming up the chimney?
It's a big old thing.
It's the big old building.
It's the Vatican, right?
Isn't that where they do it?
Yes.
Yeah, right there close to St. Peter Square.
where you can gather and watch the smoke coming out of the chimney.
So, Ryan, I've never really followed that process.
But now after watching that movie, I mean, I want Pope Francis to survive.
He seems like to me he's been a good Pope.
I don't really know a lot about it, but it seems like it.
But if he passes away at some point, then I want to watch.
I hope they should live stream it.
I know they won't, but they should because I would watch it.
I'm same way, just based on that movie, I'm kind of more involved in it.
and it's just a it's a tradition that he's going back what hundreds and hundreds of years
thousands of years i mean as long as the catholic churches existed this is the and they do it's
kind of the same way yeah the way that the way they've done it but you two should watch
the honestly that's a movie i think everyone would like wouldn't you agree right like there are
many movies that i would say everyone would like i think everybody would like that movie i told you
this after i saw it i really really liked it and hated the ending hated it you just didn't like
who they picked
No, they just, well, I don't want to spoil it, but they just kind of left it, left it hanging.
Okay, all right.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
There's white smoke.
Don't spoil.
He wants to spoil the ending, shit.
You can tell you.
Go ahead, tell me, Ryan.
Save me two hours.
Who's next?
Ed.
Ed.
Go ahead, Ed.
Yeah, it's calling for Louisville, Kentucky, first-time caller.
I'm really glad.
Listen to your show every day.
the thing that concerns me about Kentucky is we've won a lot of tough games early in the season,
but the reality of it is we were just outscoring those teams.
Our defense has been a problem all year, okay?
And the problem is Perry and Noah just do not have the foot speed to stay with these guards, okay?
And I'm just really, I just want to get a comment from you all that with the injuries,
everybody's talking about the injuries and how it's hurt.
It's also hurting us in practice because,
guys, Perry and Noah
gotta be garden people that are walk-ons
or third or four strings beyond them.
And they're not challenged.
You're as good as you practice.
And I am a little surprised.
But what are we going to do about it?
But what are we going to do about it?
I mean, there's nothing we can do about it.
Like, those guys, I agree with your analysis.
Place some match-up zones.
You can't play some match-up zones.
You can't play zone against Alabama.
You can't play zone against Alabama.
They'll kill you.
They shoot three.
We can't stand in front of them either.
We can't see in front of them either.
And I'm not talking about just Alabama.
If you get beat by a jump shot, then you've got to live with that.
But they have been blowing past our guards all year long.
To be fair, I appreciate the call.
We had our two best defensive games.
Two of our, I mean, we rose 44 points in defense in the last two weeks.
So they have gotten better.
But Drew, you can't zone Alabama.
They'll kill you.
They'll kill you.
Alabama would love to see a zone.
So yes, he's right.
Our dudes can't stay in front of guys.
And honestly, Ryan, they haven't been able to stay in front of guys all year.
But that's like a roster thing.
I just don't think we have a great defensive roster.
Maybe next year we get more athletes and it's better.
We have to outscore these teams.
And the problem is, with our two best players out, we just don't have enough firepower, Ryan, to outscore in Alabama.
Now, we can beat other teams.
but a team that can score 90,
I just don't think we have enough points in us.
Our defense has really gotten a lot better.
We held South Carolina under 60.
I think Tennessee had like 64.
Vanderbilt had 61, only 21 in the second half.
Our defense has gotten better with our best defender not even playing right now.
Yeah.
In Butler.
Sometimes it just is what it is.
You know, sometimes you just not, if we had our full roster,
I think we can keep up with Alabama offensively.
If we don't, what are you going to do?
But if we go zone, they'd score 120 points.
Take Alabama's second and third score away from them and let them play us with a
healthy team and see, yeah, it would be completely opposite.
Totally great.
