Welcome back. Hour number two of Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287 here at the KS Bar and Grill. We just opened for lunch. So come on out and join us. We are celebrating the start of a new five-year period. People are writing in the first time they heard KSR. I like these stories. One person says, Matt, I saw you at Johnny the Freaks Remote at Jocks Bar and Grill in 2007. Boy, Shannon, there's a dude from the past.

Wow. Jocs? You said Jocks? Jocs, yeah. Johnny the Freak used to be out there all the time. And I was out there sometimes as well. All those Louisville bars that we used to do the show, Longheads, right? It was on Dixie.

Yes. What's the one that's out there? It's on Newburgh, or not Newburgh, Norris Boulevard next to Bullerman. What's the name of that one? Oh, shenanigans. Shenanigans. Yeah, we used to always do it at the other shenanigans, which I always thought was a great name for a place.

I like when you hear from people that remember the first remote, we did at Bearno's, a handful of people that were there, day. Yeah. One person writes, I remember, I started listening when the Harrison twins came back to your afternoon show that day. Remember, we got the dude with the great voice for I Heart to cut promos, one of which was first they split a zygote, now they're splitting double teams.

The Harrison twins are back at Kentucky. People kind of, that gets lost in history, the phenomenon of the Harrison twins coming back. Remember they keep calm, the twins are coming, banners and shirts. Let's just play a little memory game. What are the guys that came back that their decision to come back captivated the fan base the most? The Harrison Twins are definitely there. I've got a sleeper one that I'm going to wait

because people won't remember it, but you should. The Harrison Twins is a really good one. Who else did we like hang on the edge of our seat to see if they were going to come back? Well, we stayed up all night for Hamadu Diallo. That's the one I was going to say, Hamadu Diallo. He overslept and he missed the deadline and it was like two in the morning and we were all hitting refresh on Hamadu Diallo is a great one. Well, I hit refresh like many others every two seconds from about noon until after midnight.

I didn't take my eyes off Twitter. That might be the answer. Like that one might be the answer. Even like go back before that to the tubby era, were there guys that you can remember us going, will they, will they, will they not? Tyshaun Prince was a big one, his senior year. people weren't sure if he would come back or not. Jamal McGlore was probably the biggest one. That was a big deal when he decided to come back.

He had a press conference announcement. He'd come back for his fourth season. That's a good call. Yeah. Actually, Jamal McClure is a very good one. Yeah. I do wonder if Diallo is the answer, though. I think Diallo might have been the one that...

Well, we've had similar where they're up against the deadline. Even Jackson Robinson went to the deadline. But with Diallo, since the deadline passed, it got even crazier there for an hour. We're like, well, what does this mean? He didn't do anything. Oscar? Oscar. Oscar was a big one, whether or not Oscar was going to return, and then he did.

Willie was kind of covered up by the twins that one year. He had the injury. He just told us recently he was going to go until he had the injury. The twins was one of the very, if you go back in history, there have only been two times. So back when I would talk to Cal about recruits, so I would talk to Cal about recruits from about 2017 to about 2018. And I had a really good idea of where they were going. There's only twice that I think Cal was wrong. Would you like to know the two times that I think Cal?

One was in 1978, and he's told us out a few times. But there were two times that Cal thought a recruit was going to do something, and they did something different. Do you know the recruit that didn't come here that Cal was 100% certain would and was surprised by the announcement? The announcement, he did not know at the moment of the announcement. I can think of two that really shocked him. One was Zion in game because we watched him.

But he didn't think he was going to come here. He thought he was going to go to Clemson. Or excuse me, Clemson or something else. So I don't think he thought, but there was one. Shabazz Muhammad. He thought Shabazz Muhammad was going to come here, and then the guy did the announcement on TV because Cal set up, a little behind the scenes,

Cal set up the ESPN special for Nerlins and Shabaz. And the idea was that they both were going to pick Kentucky. Remember, Nerlin shaved it into his hair. Yeah. They were both supposed to pick Kentucky, and then Shabazz picked UCLA on the special. And Muhammad was like, though, a generational talent they thought at the time. Now, that didn't pan out any.

He got in a little trouble. It might have been a blessing. But at the moment, everybody thought that was a lock. And then the other was the twins. Yeah. He was, I taught, I don't know what time of day they decided, but I talked to him. You know how you sometimes have memories in your head?

I talked to him in the McDonald's drive-thru before KSR that morning, and he thought they were going to go to Maryland because of like underarm. or something like that. And then, I guess, later in the day, they switched. But that was the one. And then he thought Andrew Wiggins was going to go to Florida State. And you remember Mike Pratt was the old, everybody was saying Kentucky, Florida State or Duke.

And then Mike Pratt was like, I think it's going to be Kansas. And it ended up, Mike Pratt was the one. That was right. Correct on that. We can go way back. This is a deep cut. Not many people will get. Do you remember a no-silla draw on Instagram?

It was backwards. for her name and she saw Wiggins at a bar at Florida State. She basically said he's not coming or something. You're talking about the girl that went to Florida State? She broke a story unintentionally, like, just posted, met Andrew Wiggins, he's not coming here or something like that, and she kind of went viral for it. Before you could even really go, I don't even remember what.

Unbelievable. That is a great memory as well. Recruiting, we would hang on to every little thing because we weren't used to being spoiled by getting everybody at the time. There's been a couple shows where we actually went past 12 to cover, make sure we covered the announcement of somebody. Yeah, Andrew Wiggins. Dickens was one of them.

All right, I've got a St. John shirt on. Rick Patino and St. John's are now number eight in the country. Are you shocked? They swept Yukon for the first time in 25 years, sold the garden out on Sunday. The New York talk shows are talking about St. John's as much as they're talking about the Knicks. Are you surprised? I mean, I think Rick probably hoped that would happen, but are you surprised it's happening? I'm surprised that they're this good.

I'm on with you. I knew Patina would eventually build them back up. But, man, I've watched them a couple games. They're good. I want no part of them in March. They get after defensively. Those guys can really play, so they could be a dangerous team in March for sure. We all assumed he would do well there, but the turnaround he's done at St. John's to make them what they are now.

Top 10. I think all their losses combined are by like a total of six points. So even when they've lost, it's been at the very end. And then he's made me love him again just simply because what he's doing to Dan Hurley. When Hurley had that thing, don't you turn your back on me on the best coach in the game two weeks ago. I'm so glad Patino is putting him in his place and has beaten him now twice and Yukon's going the wrong way. Are you rooting for him? Yes, I'm still iffy on Kentucky wrapping their arms around Petino and Welcoming back.

I mean, I realize I can't stop it. It's already happened. But I have no problem rooting for him at St. John's against teams like Yukon. See, I think they're actually a pretty fun team to watch. What's crazy is they can't shoot. I mean, Rick Patino, who, like, built his entire career on this idea of shooting threes. The one thing his team doesn't, can't do is shoot. But everything else they're really good at, you know,

that dude has some magic about him, man. Like, I've disliked him for so long. And then there's this moment where after Mark Pope, it was like we were all allowed to like him again. And now you can see his charm. I mean, like, there's his charm back with the suit. And, you know, you see the motivational speeches. And you're like, all right, I guess he won me over again, right?

He's still full of it, though. Did you see the clip of him lying to his son? Richard's like, you're lying to me right now. It's in the new documentary. He says, Cadairie Richmond won't play. He's the most injured player I've ever had. And Richard says, he's going to play. You are lying to me.

It's like, this clip's just showing him still being typical rip. He's still a huge liar, yeah. You can't trust anything that comes out of that man's mouth, but, boy, he can sure coach basketball. I used to say he's the lionest liar that ever lied. And I still believe that's true. And now he's, like, kind of trying to be, like, telling other schools what to do,

like suggesting what Indiana should do or all the videos he puts out of Kentucky he's trying to just kind of be like the czar of basketball any let me ask you when you watch Arkansas any part of you hope they win or are you rooting for them to lose how many of you all right here when you watch Arkansas how many of you are rooting for them to lose how many of you are rooting for them to win how many of you don't care well you don't like sports so I just you're not so everybody is either rooting for him to lose or is too scared to vote. I admit I want them to lose.

Is that bad? No. No, I told you, I told both you guys, I've watched the two episodes of the documentary that's come out, and it's really good because they've done such a good job putting it together. But I find myself pulling for those three kids, though, DJ and Big Z and I do. Yeah, I don't. I mean, I don't want them to fail, but, like, I don't want them to win. You don't want them to win.

Not to win, but I find myself pulling for them. So you want them to each have 20 points and lose? That would be good. Okay. I get that a little bit. When I watched him, it's been a while, but Big Z was just, he had like four threes in a row. I found myself grinning and very happy for Big Z. Even though I wanted them to lose that game, I couldn't help but be happy for the former Kentucky players.

I think I do had a big dunk that I was rooting for him. But in the end, I want him to lose by 60. Yeah, I want him to lose. You know, in this documentary, they show Chin Coleman doing a lot of coaching. I mean, a lot of coaching. Hey, I've gotten out of control. Well, first of all, that's how you know they had an editorial. control is they saw Chin Coleman doing coach.

A lot of coach. They didn't have anything of him like hanging out at Jeff Ruby? Nope. Nope. It's a I. I have heard that the Kentucky win seems like a Chin Coleman piece almost to be like kind of a little extra dig to Kentucky fans. I'm not watching.

You all can watch it if you want. I'm not watching. I can't. It's like watching a replay of a game you lost. I don't know how could you watch a game we lost? Yeah. Like I can't watch. Like I've never watched the.

UK-Westconcasson game again. Like, I can't. You know, I can't watch that. We lost. I'm not watching it. That was tough, but they followed him to Dunkin' Donuts, and he had with Joey Palumbo. I mean, that's nice. I'm glad he got a good donut.

But, like, I can't. I can't. I'm not watching it. It's completely about, I don't want to. I don't need to revisit that. Totally agree with you on that. If we won, we'd watch. I'm not watching it if we lost.

Does that mean that okay, if you didn't, the show was completely canceled or was just you personally? These guys could have, yeah, I appreciate the call. These guys could have done, I appreciate the call. These guys could have done a show without me. They couldn't have, unfortunately,

called it KSR because we own that that branding. But, But, yeah, they could have if they'd wanted to. I mean, I'm sure they would, the I heart would have done something, the Ryan Lemon variety hour. Did, in your new deal with Iheart, did you work out a three-month summer vacation this time or anything like that? No, I gave myself, I have one more, during the five years I have one of those that I can do. You got that worked in?

Yeah, what are you asking? Why do you need all these specifics? You know, well, we have to make sure we're ready. I mean, you got a couple years. It's not going to be like tomorrow. It's not this summer. I mean, you almost had every show. You almost had the variety show.

You could have had a lot of time. Do you think the O.A. returning home, do you think that's going to be a big deal? Like, you think there's going to be any nervousness or any sort of desire to, you know, Jackson Robinson kind of had that with Arkansas. Do you think there's any of that? Yeah, there'll be a little something there. You know, roster's changed so much, but that was his coach. He recruited him. You know, he lived there for two years.

but honestly, I think his two-point game might be more in the front of his mind now than in the actual homecoming. I'm sure he really wants to come back and have a good game after his one-for-nine foulout he just had. That was so uncharacteristic with him, so he's got two reasons to be motivated. Yeah, this comes at the best time, right? You're coming off that horrible game, and how you're going to play against your old team. It's almost perfect timing for a way. Sometimes you can get two works up. That's what I was going to say.

All right, a couple little theories just to go. You know how right before the robbery? Did you see who distracted the security guard?

I did see that. It was the Russian. He's part of it. so too he's definitely part of it uh somewhere did you notice how the three friends they keep pairing off into two and then making like like there there's a lot going on there with them right um and then uh notice that gregg is gary now he take it he took a different name i didn't realize i didn't catch that he took a different name he was gregg and now he's gary so like something's going on there too don't you think well yeah because the one lady actually comes up you see in the

was it the previews of next episode like she comes to the table don't i know you yes give you my Let me give you my, this is my theory. Walton Goggins is going to try, he's obviously going to try to kill the owner, you know, the owner. Yeah. Because I'm going to make a prediction. The owner killed his dad. You know how he said his dad was murdered? That's it.

Oh. That's it. I'm telling you. That's my prediction. The owner of the White Lotus killed Walton Goggins dad, and now he's trying to go seek revenge. That's my prediction. The female? No, the husband that he's in Bangkok.

He just said, I have to go to Bangkok. Yeah. See, I like your three a lot better than mine. Mine was he's, that's his real dad. Yeah, I don't think that's right. I thought that, too, for a minute, but I think now he's going to try to kill it. I have a question for the women that are listening, because I know you know this is right. They announced that Sidney, the actress, she announced her marriage, which was supposed to take place this summer, is being postponed.

That means they're never getting together, right? Like, you don't postpone. Like, if a wedding is set... I postpone my husband. for three years. Yeah, but that was COVID. That was, you had an excuse. Yeah, you had an excuse. It was COVID. That's a little different. But non-pandemic related, if you postpone your wedding, that means you're not getting married, right? They are running that red flag up the flagpole. Major red flag there. Can you think of any other reason? If you already had the date,

you already had the place, you already had that. You okay, sir? All right. If the, that means something that you're not going to. get married, right? It's not a good sign. It's not a good sign. Usually when you're getting married, you're supposed to be excited about it. You did all the work and the spreadsheets and all the nonsense to get it set up. There's some funny business. Is she an actress? You don't know who Sidney Sweeney is? No. How do you not know who Sidney is? I have no idea who that is. She's like the most, like it person. Like, how do you not know who she is?

And on White Lotus. We were just talking about the White Lotus. She's literally on White Lotus. Which one is she on White Lotus? The first season, the, uh, the, uh, the, the, The Massenbockers, it's the daughter. Okay. The blonde girl? That's Sidney Sweeney. One of the most popular actresses in the world right now? Yeah.

Like, U-Ross, maybe the most popular actress in the world. I've not seen her other than White Lotus. I have no idea who she is. I'd say probably most people don't either. That's not true. That is true. Do you know who Sidney is? Thank you.

You literally talked about kind of in a weird way. how attractive she was during the Super Bowl commercial. Well, anyway, let me go back to my point.

Maybe she's got a deal of a lifetime role in a film that she can't turn down. She's been in a lot of films. Maybe this is like huge. It's going to be huge, and she doesn't want, she's... So you think they're still getting married? Maybe. They're not getting married. They got engaged before she was famous.

Oh, they did. She's not, they're not getting married. You just right there. She did that movie with Glenn Powell and Australia. Yeah, they were dating because they were like, I don't know. I can't believe you don't. know who she is. Who's next? Lynn. Shannon, you know who she is, right?

Never heard of her. Oh my goodness. I don't know who she is. This is a show that to some extent is supposed to be associated with the culture. You don't know who Sidney is either, Shannon? Never heard of her. I mean, other than White Lotus, what else does she play in? She's been in like everything. So that's not an answer. Like what movie? Euphoria? Yeah, euphoria. Never heard of that? The movie with Glenn Powell. Handmaids too. Never heard of that? Yeah. Never watched that. Lots of stuff. All right, go ahead. Lynn.

First of all, it's not true that anyone is the only one that can do something. Now, I was of the belief he was the only one that could succeed here the way he was doing it. but the rules of college basketball, I think, shifted to where the way he was doing it was not the way to do it anymore.

I don't think getting freshmen is the way to do it anymore unless you are Duke and you have three of the top five. But, I mean, you weren't the only one I think that became convinced of that. He was really good at convincing people. I'm the only one that can do this. I went full circle. I'm all against them, and I hope they lose every game. Appreciate the call. Did you hear Mark Pope last night in talking about foul calls his comments about Terry Oglesby?

Did you hear that? I did. And first, credit to the caller, he called out Oglesby by name and just straight up asked Pope. What was up with him walking you down like that? How do you handle that? I just loved that he threw the question out. So his answer was something like there's an art, and this is true, by the way. He is exactly right about this.

There is an art, he said, to arguing with an official up to the moment that you'll get a technical and then walking away. And he said that he gave it to Oglesby up to the moment he was going to get a technical and then walked away. And then the dude was following him. And then Mark sort of hinted that his wife really was mad that the referee followed him. He kind of hinted like my wife would have a stronger thing to say. I don't think his wife liked him that he followed him.

Good woman back in her man like that. Yes. I've said this before. I think the way he was talking is what I've said about growing up in the mountains. You know, I've said when I grew up in Middlesboro, if you're going to live in Middlesbrough, not fight and have a mouth like mine, you've got to know the exact line you can push somebody and then stop. Yep. And over the years, I learned the exact place you can get to before you're going to get punched.

And then when you're about to get punched, you get away. and I became a master and I could make a person really mad but not quite get to the point where they would knock me in the face and that's that there's a skill to that and I think that's what Mark's talking about with referees he said it's like the old rules in the wild west

they're not going to shoot you in the back so if you turn and walk away even when it gets heated they're not going to do it if you've got your back to him so he walked him right up to the moment you're oddly the opposite Ryan you don't talk a lot of trash but the moment you do you get punched in the face.

Like you only jump across the line. It is crazy how coaches kind of know how far they can push an official. Like they can get right up to the line and not cross the line. And so the top five in Nate Amends list, Kentucky, Duke, Arkansas, Louisville, and Tennessee. That's who he's deciding from. Could he pick more of a UK fan troll list than these five, Drew? No, not at all.

I mean, Carolina, like Shannon says, one you conclude, but they already got Caleb Wilson. They're not even in the conversation here. This is absolutely it, and I'll be honest, even though he hadn't visited yet. I don't love John Caliperi in this one. They're going to throw a lot of money at him. I was hoping he wouldn't make the cut, but he's been on him hard here recently too, as Kentucky's also trying to make up ground.

You've got to wonder, though, what a great movie it would be if he picked Kentucky over those other four schools. You know, middle finger in the air to those other four schools. I think Kentucky was in a really good spot, and now Arkansas's involved. It would be interesting if right at the last minute

they came and got it. Because I thought Kentucky, I liked where Kentucky was late last. week. The reports are Kentucky actually has the best NIL set up in the conversation, but, you know, chicken man down there. He's probably willing to overpay to make the statement. Yeah. Again, had we beaten them. The high school district tournaments in Kentucky start tonight. Ryan, I haven't been keeping up with high school basketball very much. Give me the best five teams in the state of Kentucky. Clear one, right? Great, great crossing. St. X is really good in Louisville.

Great crossing. Zanex hasn't really lost at all. They beat Craig Crossing, I think, right? I don't know. That's true. I don't know if they're not. They're the two best teams, though, right? Yeah, but they're the, I think they're the cream of the crop for sure.

And then who else is good? Lexington Catholic has been playing well here in town. I don't know the whole state as well. So you don't know? No. Okay. St. X is head and shoulders. I mean, I think they lost to an out-of-state team maybe in December.

They've been destroying everyone. I saw that the two Lorsal County and Hazard are also in the conference. conversation is not something that are usually there. I saw the two Louisville regions drew each other in the first round of the state tournament for the first time in 35 years. Wow. So the sixth and seventh region, the two regions from Louisville will play each other in the first round, Sweet 16. Drew mentioned Marshall County. You know who their best player is? Who? His last name is Langie. Is it Dan Langy's kid?

Yes. Oh, my goodness. And he's a sophomore. He's like a six-five sophomore. How about that former Vandy legend, Shannon? Dan Langie. He was a good player. I wonder if his son's half as good as he is. He's apparently really good.

Interesting. All right, who's next? Corey. Corey, go ahead, Corey. Hey, what's going on, guys? I have my own KSR story to tell you real quick. Okay. So I worked in law enforcement and for drug court for 15, well, collectively for 15 years.

Actually, the judge that I reported to the last eight years was Judge Pendleton in Beren County. Oh, well, okay. But the only time I was able to listen to the show was on podcast because my job kept me busy. Well, I've made a career change. I'm a sales rep for beerhouse distributors now, so I'm able to catch the live show. So that's how I've come to listen to the show. Well, I picked up my son from Beta Convention last month, and we had a little bit of time to kill before we headed home. So we came to Bespoken Spirits, and we sat at the bar and watched you guys.

and now he's a huge KSR fan. Oh, well, good. Well, that's awesome. Well, thank you. So every day after I pick him up from football practice, he wants to listen to the show that you guys aired earlier that day. So I guess what I'm calling for is to say thank you because you've given a father and a son something to bond over.

So thank you very much. That's very kind of you, and I always like to hear that. And you clearly got a well-rounded son. He plays football, but he's also in the beta, I guess, Beta Club, that's a smart, athletic kid. Like, you got, that's a really nice kid. So thank you very much. So you could relate to him. because you have three kids that were all three very different. Very different. I realized if I wanted to relate to my son, I need to get out of my sports closet and do things that interest him. He wanted to go to this Renaissance fair. So I went and I loved it. It was fun.

Yes. We all should go. You can go, but I mean, I still, we are going to Comic-Con here in Lexington again, so I can dress up as like a dragon or whatever it is that they do at that. It's one of my favorite things we do. I love random events that I would never go to otherwise, and, you know, some of the best people watching, and it gets you some blasts from the past of the booths there, too, from like early 90s.
