Starting point is 00:03:11 Welcome back. It is our number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. KS bar is now open. Come on out and see us. It is Ask Anything Tuesday. We're ready taking your questions. And this segment is sponsored by Clark's Pumping Shop. You know me. I like to pump, and then I shop, and they love their cats, and they take pride in playing at UK, and they take pride in their stores. There's one all over. They got great coffee. All good morning, start with a cup of coffee. Clark's Pump and Shop, crispy, crunchy chicken, hangar 54 pizza, perfectly Cajun.
Starting point is 00:03:44 It's all there. Clark's Pumpin Shop, return, refresh, and refuel. We just have a guy sitting over here. I just met a little while ago. His name Stanley, but people call him Soul Train. Soul Train. And I wish I had a nickname like Soul Train. That's a good nickname to have.
Starting point is 00:03:58 It'd be like, hey, there, Soul Train. You know, you're cool. If your name's Soul Train, you're cool. Nobody calls me Soul Train. They just are like, hey, Matt Jones, that's it. But Soul Train, now that would give you some respect right there. Yeah, there you go. We can start with that.
Starting point is 00:04:13 You don't like MJ. I don't need to be Soul Train. That's his name. Okay. I think that would be a weird nickname to give me. How about Col Train? I need you to stop. And I'm just praising Stanley and his,
Starting point is 00:04:25 in his nickname. All right, so before we get to phones, we have a good high school sports controversy. Oh, I love these. All right, let us have it. So Cooper High School, that's up in Northern Kentucky. Yes, it is. They made the Sweet 16.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Was it last year? It's been recent, yeah. Recent. Okay, they are one of the favorites to go this year. They're 12 and 0 in the region. Okay. Okay, so they are one of the favorites. Cooper High School, and you're thinking,
Starting point is 00:04:48 man, things are going well there at Cooper High School. You got a chance to win the region. Everybody's excited. Northern Kentucky stand up. Here comes Cooper High School. Here we go. Unfortunately, though, there's drama under the surface. Uh-oh.
Starting point is 00:04:59 The coach's wife. So I think the coach's name is Tim Sullivan, not the former Courier Journal, uh, writer, but a different Tim Sullivan. The coach's wife posts on Facebook. Now that, and this is what I'm going to summarize it. Now that it's out there, here's what's going on with Tim and Cooper High School. On January 21st this season, Tim was requested a meeting with the AD. First of all, that's my mom's birthday.
Starting point is 00:05:24 You shouldn't be doing contract. controversial things like this. Sure. Right. Tim is, the athlete, the principal informed him that the completion of this season, Tim would either have the choice to resign or not be renewed as the basketball coach at Cooper High School. Citing, he didn't have a sense of urgency to improve the culture of the program. But yet they just went to the sweet 16.
Starting point is 00:05:44 But they just went to Sweet 16. And they're 12 and 0. So, so this, I guess it got out this week. Okay. So now everybody knows Cooper is playing, even though they're going to lose their coach. So then, well, what has? That's what everybody wants to know, right? What happened?
Starting point is 00:05:57 It can't be a scandal or a too big one because they wouldn't let him keep coaching, right? Like something's going to, what could it be? Well, this is from his wife. We don't know. This is one side of the store. Got you. Tim asked the principal if it was personal and he shook his head no and said, no, it's just time to replace him in the entire staff. Now, she then says that Tim has been mistreated, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:06:21 So then I posted on Twitter. Last night, text machine starts filling up with stories behind the stories. Now, again, I don't know if any of this is true. All right. So let's be clear. I don't know. But, you know, a bunch of people told the same story, right? So, like, could be true.
Starting point is 00:06:43 You got to think there's a nugget of truth in there maybe somewhere. Apparently last year, this is the story. Somebody on the, some player, they're, they're, uh, their dad was in the stands for Cooper and got started yelling at someone from another high school. I don't know if it was a player, if it was a dad, but there was a father something thing. Okay. Right. Then, apparently the principal said, hey, father, you can't come to the games anymore.
Starting point is 00:07:16 So then the kid, who was one of the best players for Cooper, ended up going to the school where his dad was screaming at them. So he lost his player. And apparently the coach was very upset about that. It led to an argument between principal and coach, and now here we are. Now, I'm not taking sides in this here kerfuffle. Okay? I just like kerfuffles. And I also think, as we get ready to start the regional tournament,
Starting point is 00:07:43 a high school that's one of the favorites in their region, having a coach who's already been told you can't come back. And having this story come out makes whatever region Cooper's in, what region is that? Eighth region? Eighth region. I don't know. Whatever region it is, what an exciting what's going to happen here with Cooper and the dad screaming at the other team and then sending his son to that team, that's some drama that I'm here for.
Starting point is 00:08:08 I'm really kind of torn in this because you don't want your parents to act like that. Well, we don't know what they acted like. True, true. We don't know how bad it was. We didn't even know if it happened, but this is just what people are saying. True. I guess you had to say allegedly that that happened. So if the principal is just trying to...
Starting point is 00:08:25 But why would you fire the coach for that? You don't. That's how I'm kind of torn. It's got nothing to do with the coach. That's a parent principal issue, but the coach got mad because the coach lost one of his best players after the incident. He's the school because of it. Yeah. 9-3.
Starting point is 00:08:39 He's the coach of the year. On top of that. You know, parents shouldn't go crazy, but I feel like that happens. A lot of games I go to. Every game. Ryan goes to he's screaming at somebody. We all remember that parent that growing up at our high school. school or youth games.
Starting point is 00:08:54 So it's kind of common, even though it shouldn't happen. And I don't think it should get to a point where a coach that's 12 and 0 and just one coach of the year should be getting pushed out over a situation like that. So are you rooting for Cooper? Apparently, his wife who posted this is also the school's volleyball coach. So the school's volleyball coach posted about the principal of the school that she is the volleyball coach for. Some turmoil in the Cooper Athletics. I'm rooting for Cooper and coach Tim Sullivan. I believe he said was his name.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Yeah, if you're asking me if I'm rooting for them, I'm like, heck, yeah, I'm rooting for them now. Well, I don't know who to root for it because I don't know, like, if there's more to it. But I'm sure there is. I'm sure there is. And I'm sure it's interesting. So when Cooper plays, you've got to pick your regional tournaments. Saturday they play Highlands at NKU. Saturday they play Highlands at NKU.
Starting point is 00:09:42 I'm going to be keeping up with how Cooper does because the regional tournaments are all this week. The girls' regionals, Sweet 16 is next weekend. Yes. So the girls' regionals finish this week. I think the boys are kind of going over two weeks so that they can get it done. Yeah, some of the girls started their region play last night already. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Tonight's the first big night. I think Region 15 had a few games, but tonight's when they really started. Tonight's when it really gets going. Regent 15, you remember is where the woman made the TikTok. Yes. About the four overtimes and Betsy Lane and Prestonsburg and the guy threw the birds up from the,
Starting point is 00:10:15 I love some good high school basketball drama. It makes me excited. Aren't your Douglas Broncos playing tonight? They're playing tonight. at Madison Central. They lost in the district and got a better draw than the district winner. Are you trying to say Madison Central is not good? Oh, they're good.
Starting point is 00:10:31 But Douglas is not in great crossings. Sounds like Shannon that he doesn't respect Madison Central. I think he said Madison Central sucks, quote Ryan Lemon. Yeah, I think the quote was Madison Central couldn't beat me. That was the exact quote. If you want to hang that up in your locker room, Madison Central. I think I overheard that during the break. He said that, right?
Starting point is 00:10:49 I told you who the Madison Central's best player was. Darren Felthaus's son. Really? Yes. Wow. Darren Felthaus has a son that is already ready to be that good. Yes, he's really good. We're all old.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Who's next? Will. Will, go ahead, Will. Hey, guys, first time, long time. Who are? I had a question for asking anything Tuesday. What was your all's dream job as a child? I'll hang out.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I had two. I wanted to work in sports, which that happened, and I wanted to, my other dream job was I wanted to be a host on QVC. We could make that happen, I felt like. Yeah, that's still a possibility. No, I wanted to, like, go, look at this notebook. It is 1999.
Starting point is 00:11:39 I wanted to be like the woman on hacks. So who used to watch it all the time that you had, were forced to watch it as a kid? Maybe like your grandma or something. My grandma, though, I watched it, but me too, I liked it. I just thought it was like, because back that now they only sell women's clothing, but they used to sell like TVs and stuff that like we didn't have in Middlesboro.
Starting point is 00:11:56 You know, there was no store to go get some of that stuff. And I was like, wow, if I could be on TV selling these luxury items. Have the phone number down to the bottom? Yeah. Were you like role playing it out as a kid in your bedroom like you're the host? Oh, my goodness. I did. You're laughing, but not by myself, but there were my mom's friend, Claudia.
Starting point is 00:12:16 She had two daughters, Megan and Macy Andrews. And they would come to Middlesbril's sometimes to visit. and we would be QVC. You would play QVC. That was, yeah. And you wonder why I didn't end up a better athlete. My grandmother watched so much QVC when you changed the channel. If you squinted, you could still see the phone number burned in the bottom.
Starting point is 00:12:36 It was burned in the bottom. Yeah, like you could switch over to the Kentucky basketball game and be a little faint little QVC number over the game. What's amazing to me about QVC is that it's still on. No way. Yes. It's still going? Who is, I mean, who's watching that? Like, you have a computer.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Like, you can order anything that's on there, but there are, it is still on. They're working so hard to not let their viewers find out about Amazon. Just a little longer. Well, you get that great deal when time's running out. They're going to drop the price and they're going to jump on the price. I always totally bought it. Yeah. I always was like, well, you better call soon.
Starting point is 00:13:12 You better call now. I mean, you got 30 seconds. They will not take it if you call after that. You will not be able to get it. What about you? What was your dream? don't say play basketball for Bobby Knight in India. Well, I was going to be the starting center fielder and bat leadoff for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:13:26 That was my dream job. But I went to college. I told you this. I was going to be a Kentucky state trooper. That was going to be my. So you must have liked when we were at the academy. I loved it. Yes, I thought it was really cool.
Starting point is 00:13:37 I think I could still do it. They're hiring. They are hiring. Wait a minute. They are hiring, but do you think they would take you? No. No, but I mean, like, you think, why wouldn't they want like a 55-year-old first-time cop? I couldn't pass the physical part of it.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Yeah, driving record. I could be the guy that does all the paperwork in the office. It's a driving record. He's already out. Who's next? Let's go to Nate. Nate. Go ahead, Nate.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Yeah, Matt. I'm not a big, super big wrestling fan, but I tune in every now and then, and I think that seeing a heel turn was one of the biggest sports moment where I saw coming but was still surprised. Do you guys have any of those big sports moments where you see it coming, but you're still surprised what it happened. That's a tough call. I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:14:25 I mean, I don't know. I don't know if I can think of one where I saw it. For me, the biggest surprising sports moment, I was very surprised. If you're just looking at Kentucky basketball, I was very surprised when we went on the run in 2014. I'd kind of left that team for dead. I thought we were going to lose to Kansas State in the first game. And then when we beat Wichita State, then beat Louisville, beat Michigan, beat Wittles, beat Michigan, beat Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:14:52 That was a really surprising. And then on the negative, I just didn't see the St. Peter's loss coming at all. But we did see the Oakland when coming because of the St. Peter's game. I kind of saw the Oakland loss coming. I genuinely thought we could lose to Oakland. I just did not see the St. Peter's loss coming. I kind of, I know we had lost in the SEC tournament, and it had been kind of embarrassing, but I just kind of felt like I was worried about the Murray State game in the second round,
Starting point is 00:15:19 but I was not worried, Drew, about St. Peters and it just hit me from behind. Remember last year I'm usually positive. I don't get the anxiety on our pregame show at that hotel. I was like, this doesn't feel right for the Oakland game. And you're like, if you're worried this is a bad sign, I was like something doesn't feel right today. I'm worried about an upset. It did not feel right.
Starting point is 00:15:37 It didn't feel right from the time the St. Peter's band was playing at our pregame show and we couldn't get away from it. It just didn't, or excuse me, Oakland, yeah. I think you're right about St. Their comments going into it just weren't very confident. A&M had just whooped them in Nashville for no reason. 99% of the Kentucky crowd. Why am I bringing this up? I think you're right about St. Peter's.
Starting point is 00:15:54 I think that did surprise us. Even going into overtime, I still thought, well, Kentucky's going to win this at St. Peters. But you're right. Oakland was different. About the second or third, Jack Golky three threw in.
Starting point is 00:16:04 We're all like, oh, we're done. We saw it coming. I've said this before about the St. Peter's game. Ion Eagle texted me an hour before the game and said, what's up with Cal? And I was like, what do you mean? He goes, you know, I've been around Cal for 30 years. I've never seen him this nervous.
Starting point is 00:16:20 What's going on? And I was like, oh, I was just, you know, just being Cal. Well, I need go saw something. Yes, he did. I mean, he said for moment one, something's up with him today. Well, you said that in the 2014 championship game. You saw Julius Randolph. I knew we were losing the 2014 game during warmups.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Yep. I walked up and Julius Randall was standing there warming up, and he was with, I think he was with Alex and maybe James Young, and they looked terrified. And we had been with them on every spot on that trip, and they were so loose and excited, and they just looked terrified. I think it was the first time they were the favorite.
Starting point is 00:17:00 And I thought, I don't like this. We saw it most at the end of his era, but whatever he was doing was putting way too much pressure on those guys, because I remember St. Peter's game, that's the closest I've ever gotten to sit to the bench. And even when maybe Kentucky was leading early in the game, Shaheen Holloway looked so relaxed, and his team looked so relaxed.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Cal just 10 minutes into the game was already losing it. It was like, this is Kentucky. They're supposed to be afraid of us, not the other way around. Yeah, 859-280-2287. It is Ask Anything Tuesday. We're going to take a break. We haven't talked about a UK football player doing a historic performance at the combine that I don't think anyone saw coming.
Starting point is 00:17:41 At least I didn't. We'll be right back. KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in.

Starting point is 00:18:51 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.

Starting point is 00:19:36 Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.
Starting point is 00:20:02 It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel like you don't feel like. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face like. up and smile. That means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can, like, I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about
Starting point is 00:20:32 showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey.
Starting point is 00:21:07 I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this plant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:21:42 It is Kentucky Sports Radio. I just saw a video. Speaking of high school, high school sports controversy, Warren East Metcalf County Girls Region Tournament. Oh, my. Metcalf County's up two. Warren East player gets fouled, two shots with one second left to tie the game.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Yeah. She makes the first free throw. Second free throw, she's shooting this. I'll show you the video. She's shooting this. This is to tie. This is to tie. She's dribbling here.
Starting point is 00:22:17 She takes the shot. It is pure. Ref comes in, calls lane violation. On her? No, on the woman in the block that looks like maybe got in. No, three point, behind the three point line runs in. But it went in. But it went in.
Starting point is 00:22:32 What a terrible way. What a terrible, like, what a ref getting involved for no reason. Like if she got, you know, these referees just calm down. It's girls high school basketball. She made it. So if he did run in, who cares? If she'd gotten the rebound, I'd get it. But, like, come on.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Sometimes you've got to read the room, I think, and you're in a region turn like that. Riffs. Riffs are like, I'm in charge. Yeah. High school girls basketball in Kentucky is not worth it. Yes. A horrible way to lose. Terrible way to lose.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Terrible for Warren East. All right, real quick before you go to the phones. Eli Cox. Let's go over quickly the Combine. Dion Walker, bad combine. Yeah. Would not run the 40? You can do that if you're a top 5 pick.
Starting point is 00:23:20 You can't do that if you're a projected second round pick. Didn't run the 40. Bad decision. Already his stock was falling anyway. He actually looked like he was in pretty good shape when he got there, but then the things he did that were measurable is not very good. Dionne Walker may have played himself from a top 5 to 7 pick to maybe end of the second round early third round.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Wow. Never saw that coming, really. Yeah. Now, good. Maxwell Harrison, fastest cornerback in the draft. Yeah, I guess he made the comment for he left Lexington. I'm going up there. I'm going to be the fastest guy in camp, and he was. And he backed it up.
Starting point is 00:23:54 He may have played himself into a first round. Yes, yeah. So congrats to Maxwell Harrison. But the story for me is Eli Cox from Nicholsville, Kentucky. Eli Cox comes to Kentucky as a three-star, barely a three-star. A lot of people were like, why are they recruiting him? He goes through the combine as a center. he produces the third best overall combine numbers since 1987 in the history of the combine for a center.
Starting point is 00:24:22 That's insane. Third best for a center since 1987. Like just kills it. Looked amazing, looked in better shape than I ever remember him being in. And then he performs this. They said maybe played his way from like fifth or six round pick to being one of, if not the highest centers taken in the draft. And his story is so crazy.
Starting point is 00:24:42 He was the center here. Then they moved him to guard and put Jagger at center. Then they moved him back to center. Like out of going to necessity, they moved him back there, and he ends up going to get a job in the NFL because of it. How crazy is that? Really unbelievable when you put it with the – comparing it to past centers.
Starting point is 00:24:58 There was like 625 centers who have gone through the combine, and he's third ever. That is crazy. That is nuts. And the two guys that beat him didn't even end up playing center in the NFL. They moved to, like, guard. So, like, when it comes to actual centers, He's the best now then.
Starting point is 00:25:13 He might be. Wow. Good for Eli Cox from Nicholasville, Kentucky, going and getting it done. Who's up next? Steve. Steve, go ahead, Steve. Yeah, I'm really excited about the direction that Kentucky's basketball team is taken now. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:33 I mean, not just wins involved with us, as a way some have some great wins, but I just think the future for Kentucky is really bright. And Kentucky has always recruited kids from Eastern Kentucky. I mean, Rupp did. In fact, Rupp used to say. Yeah, but that was a long time ago. That was a long time ago. I know, I know.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Most of the time, a lot of that time basketball was segregated. So, like, it's a different time. Right, I know, but hopefully, I'm not. Who will they got to play against? All right, well, I appreciate the call. Listen, we got, we need to, we all need to have perspective about while this has been a great couple years for Kentucky guys, Reed Shepherd was the third pick in the draft. We don't get a lot of those guys coming out of Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:26:30 These dudes this year have been good, but they're also a step behind the rest of the dudes in the SEC. next year we have elite players coming out of Kentucky, but this is not normal. And I do want us to lie. Well, I mean, everybody can think what they want. But this idea, we got to go get dudes from Eastern Kentucky every year. I love that we have a dude from Eastern Kentucky, but no, we don't. Okay, no, we don't. We got one that I think can be really successful, but we got to get dudes that can win games, okay?
Starting point is 00:27:00 And bringing back to Rupp, I mean, again, no disrespect. But until 1966, we were not even integrated. And that was most of Rupp's career. This is a different time when it comes to basketball. Yeah, I mean, Kentucky basketball is at a different level. I mean, there's been some great players come out of Easter Kentucky. And some have had success at U.K., John Pelfrey for crying out loud. I was from Painefield.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Freddie Maggard was from Cumberland. But on a regular basis, it just doesn't happen very often. And the last two years are pretty unique, three years with Reed, are pretty unique. I mean, Travis Perry broke King Kelly Coleman's record. That's the guy you got to go get. Trent Noah was going to be in the conference. So, you know, that's a little bit easier than add. And then Marino and Jasper are top 30 players.
Starting point is 00:27:41 Hopefully that will continue, but that hasn't been the case for many years before just recently. Yeah, I mean, this is a unique, exciting Kentucky basketball run of high school players. But you can't, you got to go get really good players. And look, I love Travis Perry. I love Trent Noah. But if they were our two. two best players, we would not win. Okay, so we have to go get really, really good guys.
Starting point is 00:28:10 I kind of like with the portal now that they're probably going to do it. Let the Kentucky guys go to the Florida Gulf Coast or Holy Cross or wherever. And if they blow up like some guys are doing, all right, you want to come back home? But just to take them as true freshmen when they're not what, if they're not even top 100 in the country out of high school. I actually love that plan. Perry and Noah, a little different because of their unique circumstances. and Pope being a first year, but in general, I actually think that's a pretty good plan.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Do you feel, I'm not asking you, because it's always bad luck. Drew, do you feel good about tonight against LSU? I do. LSU really banged up. They have four guys on their injury report, and a couple of them are probable. But, I mean, they have not been a good team. It's a good matchup. They recently switched to a four-guard lineup.
Starting point is 00:28:56 It helps them score, but they do not rebound at all. I mean, their rebounding has been atrocious lately, so it should be a good game where Kentucky has sometimes struggled on their glass giving up second chance points LSU just doesn't do that at all. Damien Collins is there one big guy. He can protect the rim a little bit, but that's the extent of it. It'll be good to see David. And on that, I hope people, you know, I'm cool with booing whoever, but everyone please remember his circumstances of why he left. He went to be closer to be home because his dad died when he was in Lexington. So I hope he
Starting point is 00:29:23 gets a good reception tonight, even though he's someone that hit the portal. He will. I bet he gets a good reception, don't you think? I think he's one of the few guys that this team, for sure. The crowd definitely will. Yeah, for sure. The crowd, I, when he's they announced Damien Collins name. That kid went through a lot here. Give him a big round of applause. We'll take a break and be right back. This is KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. If you need, have fire, water damage, you call ServePro.
Starting point is 00:29:57 They've been all around the state helping with the flood cleanup. And they're unfortunately have been put to work a lot the last few years. ServePro, S-E-R-V-P-R-O-D-O-com. They'll come into your house, make it like it never even happened. I had a friend get his basement flooded recently. They came in two days later, back to what it was before. Serve-Pro-S-E-R-V-P-R-O-D-com. I hope you don't have to use them, but if you do, you can call ServePro.
Starting point is 00:30:25 A couple things. Adrian Brody won the Oscar for Best Actor. He gave the longest speech in the history of the Oscars. It was five and a half minutes long, but if you were watching it, it felt like 45 minutes and a half long. He just kept talking and talking and talking. There are now people saying they think it was very rude of him to talk that long. A, Ryan, do you think it was rude? B, if you won an Oscar, how long do you think you would talk?
Starting point is 00:30:53 I was actually watching when he won, and he went up and they started the music, you know, the wrap-up music. He goes, you might as well stop that because it ain't my first rodeo. I'm going to just stop it right now. Kind of got a little. Did they stop it? No, yeah, they did. They stopped it. Then they gave him another three or four minutes and then started it up again.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Well, I had the sound of mute, and every time I looked up, he was just still on. But how long do you think you would go? I would probably run out of words pretty quickly. So I would say maybe two minutes tops. That would be, I actually think you would be shorter than that. I think you'd get up there and you'd be like, you'd start, first of all, you would start crying. Yes. Thank my mom and dad.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Thank you, my brother. Thank you guys. I love you guys so much. much, we'll buy it. And then you would forget somebody really important. Yes. Like you'd probably forget yoga girl or something and make her upset. And then you would, like, run out of words and you'd stop.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Because everybody comes up there now and they've already got their speech on a little piece of paper. You would do that, too, though, don't you think? I don't know. That's almost, like, I think you just got to be more natural. What about you, Drew? How long do you think you would go? I would like the off-the-cuff version of Ryan's speech. See, having just watched this past one, they used the wrap-it-up box a lot.
Starting point is 00:32:00 So I would go in knowing I don't want that music. I just feel like that's a bad look. look when they're trying to rush you off, like you're not important enough to keep talking. So I would try to make it pretty brief to not get hit with the box. I would have maybe a good joke. I would definitely have a plan. Yeah. All right. Shannon, what about you? How long are you going? I would go as long as I possibly could. If I could go longer than five minutes, I'd go 10 minutes.
Starting point is 00:32:19 I don't know why they play the music. Why not just cut the mic off? That's a good way to get people to stop talking. Just turn the microphone off. Sometimes it makes it hard because they might be saying something emotional, like about somebody that's died or in their life or something like that. Then you cut it off and give them the hook. You don't make the wrong decision. I think I would go, you know, for me, I've done this long enough. I can tell when you're losing an audience, right? Like I can tell when the audience is like, okay, I've had enough of you.
Starting point is 00:32:47 And at that moment, I would wrap it up. See, that would be my moment. It's not for the audience. It's for me. I'm the one that won that Oscar. I don't care if everybody walks out. If I got stuff to say, I'm going to keep going. I don't think it's as much about when you speak.
Starting point is 00:33:00 it's a good lesson for public speaking. You know, Mario did an event at UK where he was public speaking. He was asking me for advice. My advice about public speaking, it's really not about length, right? There can be a 20-minute speech that's fascinating and a 10-minute speech that feels tedious and long. Yeah. It's really just about how long can you say something that the audience is engaged in. If you should figure out how much do I have that is interesting and then that's it.
Starting point is 00:33:30 I've heard a lot of people, they'll have the first two minutes of interesting, and then they should just stop, and then they keep going, and they keep going, and they see the good feedback from the audience and think, well, that means I need to keep going. Sometimes you need to be like George Costanza and say, all right, I'm out. You know, I got one in, I'm done. Well, on that point, these winners at the Oscars, they all want to make their own political point. You know, that's what most of their speech is political points. I understand.
Starting point is 00:33:56 I get that, like, it's a heightened political time, and, you know, you think, like, I need to say something, but you don't. I mean, you can make, like, you, you don't, especially, like, in that room, like, everybody there agrees with you. Like, to me, if you want to really be passionate about a political point, go make it to a group of people that don't agree with you, right? You want to have courage? Go, like, I think it would take courage to give a MAGA speech at the Oscars.
Starting point is 00:34:26 And I think it would take courage to give a liberal speech at a kid rock conference. Like that, like, but when you just say it to a group of people that agree with you, like, that's not that big a deal. Just want to crowd pop there. Yeah. On the wrap-it-up box, I don't know. I was watching on Sunday. These two women won. I don't know what they won.
Starting point is 00:34:44 I guess I wouldn't paying that close of attention. But one of them, they played the music for her speech, and she had to apologize to the other woman because she just had no time to talk at all. She went way too far. Yeah. Well, they also, though, do need to get these people to wrap it up. Yes. Because you do want to be done before 2 o'clock at all. Okay, so that brings up another point.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Usually the Oscars goes long after 11. They started it early. Is that why it ended early? They started it at like seven or something so that it would end before 11. It ended at like 1045. Good for them. Well done. Who's next, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:35:14 Justin. Justin. Justin. Hey, guys. Interesting question for you. And I'll give my answer and then I'll hang up. Who is your all's favorite player from Tennessee all time and Louisville all time? I know there are biggest rivals for me.
Starting point is 00:35:28 Hepburn currently for Louisville. I don't know what it is about it. I think he's that next to Wolverver Guard. And I really love watching him play. And then I'm going to give you a shout out, and I think right to like this. Chris Lofton for Tennessee. I went and watched him in high school
Starting point is 00:35:40 and thought he was going to be the next feed. I'm taking Lofen. I just want to hear y'all same thing. I appreciate the call. Everybody would say Lofton because he's from Kentucky so that for people here who couldn't hear the call. He asked what's our favorite Louisville and Tennessee player of all time. How about also Thaw and Duke?
Starting point is 00:35:55 Let's just go through all of them. Three biggest rival. All right, we obviously hate all their players. But if we had to pick one that we liked, and you can't pick Clothing because he's from Kentucky. Or Paren Johnson. And you can't pick Parenth because we're friends with him. So you can't pick either one of those.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Here would be mine. Tennessee, even when everybody hated him, I kind of liked Ron Slay. I just kind of thought he was funny. I thought, even though he would eat us up, I thought the way he and Bogan's would talk trash to each other a lot, I kind of liked Ron Slay. Louisville, it's easy.
Starting point is 00:36:28 I continued to be mesmerized by Russ Smith when he played basketball. I just thought a kid like that being that good is pretty amazing. And even though he was on their national championship team and I wanted him to lose, I did think Russ Smith was something else. And then Duke, boy, that's tough because I've really hated everyone that played at Duke. I guess Zion. Because I did kind of think Zion was a fun freak to watch. So I guess I would say Zion.
Starting point is 00:37:02 All right, what about you? My Duke was probably Grant Hill. I think he's a good guy. But he threw the pass, the beat us. I still think he's a decent human being. I'm like some of these Duke guys. My Louisville guy, I'm going to go back to Daryl Griffith. I mean, that's when Louisville was like badass.
Starting point is 00:37:18 They were really good back then. So I'm going to go Daryl Griffith. How were you in Daryl Griffith? I was in high school. Where were you born? 66. He played in like the 80, 80s. Okay, all right, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:37:29 Yeah. And I guess for Tennessee, this is hard. I'm going to have to pick maybe Tony Harris, the little point. Tony Harris? Yeah. Tony Harris? Yeah, because I can't pick Clofton. He was the least likable of all.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Tony Harris would be like number one on my hated list. I can't pick Glofton. I can't pick Scotty Hopkins. I can not believe you pick Tony Harris. Yeah, I'm going to go Tony Harris. Wait, you don't want John Folkerson? No. Tony Harris.
Starting point is 00:37:55 That's the most disappointing thing you've ever said. What about you, Drew? Well, I had Ron Slay and Russ Smith. You took those, so I'll go to my second options. Probably, I didn't like him at the time, but Peyton Seva seems like a guy that's hard. He's like. We met him. We even with him doing the L's up, you know.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Still hurts to say that out loud. And I guess maybe Scotty Hopson, even though he's from Kentucky, can I say him about Tennessee? Region two. If not him, maybe Swiper Boy. Does they have a rapper? Woolridge, something. They did have swipe avoid good. I just hate all of Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:38:31 What about Duke? Don't make me do it. Got to pick one. Can't pick Zion, can't pick Graham. Oh, my goodness. I'm the only. Elton Brent, no. Elton Brand?
Starting point is 00:38:42 I guess I'll go Elton Brand. Luke Kennard, because he grew up a Kentucky fan. Oh, man. No, actually, no. He didn't pick us. Yeah. I guess I'll go Elton Brand. That's not a fun game.
Starting point is 00:38:52 I hate all of them. All right. Shannon, what about you? Tennessee. I'll go Alan Houston. Alan Houston was, I didn't like he, but he was really good. He had ties to Kentucky a little bit with
Starting point is 00:39:03 Oh yeah. Lobo, I guess. Peron Johnson, we pick him. You guys said, can't pick parent. We know him. You have to pick somebody else. Jerry Eves. You can't pick people that you know
Starting point is 00:39:15 personally. Dewan Wheat. How about that way? DeWan Wheat. That's an early 90s name for you. Duke's so hard to pick. I guess maybe J.J. Reddick. You like J.J.
Starting point is 00:39:27 I mean, I don't like them. I don't like anybody. You'll pick Grayson Allen? How can you like J.J. Rayson Allen? I said, who you want me to pick? Grayson Allen? Shannon. First of all, you can't pick any white duc dude.
Starting point is 00:39:42 None. That's the only ones I remember. Not one of them. They're all awful. All of them. What about Jay Bill with Shannon? Oh, yeah. There you go.
Starting point is 00:39:50 I know Jay. Jay's my friend. But Jay's my friend. It's the same thing as me picking Pair and John. And what's the difference? You're picking Tony Harris is the crazy one to me. I've always, you know, like the other team's point guards. Was Tony Harris the guy?
Starting point is 00:40:03 I think I want to make sure I'm the right guy. Is that the guy that had, like, his skin wasn't very good, but he would just kill us? I'm not sure about that. He played with Slay. They were like. He killed us, though, didn't he? I don't remember that. I just remember he was a tough little dude.
Starting point is 00:40:16 Okay. If he's who I'm thinking of, I really didn't like him. I think it was, I think it was Tony. Didn't Shannon, who was the center that picked Duke because of his mom instead of Kentucky? not Bagley, but the one right before him. Oh, that was your, what was the kid? He was from Shavlik Randolph. No, Shavlet Randolph was the kid who picked Duke, whose mother,
Starting point is 00:40:36 and one of the funniest things that's ever happened. You remember he was choosing between Duke, Carolina, and NC State, and his mother was asked, why are these the three schools that you're choosing? Because they live there. Like, why not look at others? And she said, I don't want. Shavlik to have to go very far from home.
Starting point is 00:41:00 He's not comfortable with things like girls and making his own food. Oh, my goodness. Mom. Mom. Oh, Mom. There was a profile of Shavlet Randolph where it said his mother would, when he was home, still cut his steak.
Starting point is 00:41:17 This was a man in college. Didn't know? The balls, yeah. Yeah, exactly. Marcus Bolden's the one that, like, Kentucky, but Mommy wouldn't let him go here. Shannon didn't like the mother. It said, Mom, your time has passed.
Starting point is 00:41:32 That's right. It's right. It wouldn't be my favorite. Good memories. All right, 859-28027. We'll take a break. Come back. Final segment, KSR.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-28027. Matt Jones, Ryan Lemon, the Tony Harris fan, which is still the worst thing that he's ever said in the years of doing this. Hey, if you have a pet that you is also a UK fan, because why wouldn't they be, B.B. and Pets, the Richmond Road
Starting point is 00:41:58 Vet Clinic and Tates Creek Animal Hospital are proud to bring you BB&Pets, the fan club for your pets. You got BBN Gear invites to dog-friendly UK sporting events and more. Go to BBNPets.com. Get your dog pampered,
Starting point is 00:42:14 celebrated, and decked out in Kentucky blue gear. I saw a dog walking down the street with a person, and the person said to me, we got some of that BBN Pets gear. And I said, well, good. Raur-Ree. But I asked them keep the dog away from me. BBNpets.com where Kentucky pets go to show their pride.
Starting point is 00:42:33 They're good people. They take care of my dogs. They're going to board my dogs when we go to Nashville next week. We mean bored them? Like just put them up and watch them? Uh-huh. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Well, that's nice of them. Very nice of them. Your dogs, I hope they know what they're in for. Your dogs are insane. Well, that's funny. You said that because when the lady entered my phone, she goes, all three of them? Yes, all three of them. Lady, let me tell you, you don't know.
Starting point is 00:42:54 You should have charged him double. Just trust me. Those dogs are those dogs are Ryan Lemon in dog form. Before we get done here, last night, Thunder played the Rockets. For the fourth time this year, Shea Alexander had over 50 points. But the bigger story might be Reed Shepard,
Starting point is 00:43:13 career high, had 25 points, scored 17 in the third quarter, got really hot. Dwayne Wade was on the game doing the announcing. He was getting excited. Finally got to see a little bit, The Rockets had a ton of people injured, which is why Reed played so much. But he played really, really well.
Starting point is 00:43:30 He did. It's kind of what we thought we'd see more of from Reed this season. But even though he's the third pick, he got to a team that's pretty good and has a crowded backcourt and even spend some time in the G League. I'm just glad he finally had that for some confidence for him and everybody around him because we know it's in him. He just hasn't really had as many opportunities as he needs. Awesome. He had the big game. I assume he was Guard and Shea, though.
Starting point is 00:43:49 He had a big game and your guy gets 51. Will they guarding each other? No, he wasn't. I don't think Reed was Guarded. May have on a couple plays, but Reed was kind of playing the two. But he got a bunch of shots. Shea is unbelievable. I mean, Shay, has there ever been a Kentucky player that ended up better in the pros
Starting point is 00:44:06 versus what you thought he would be than Shea? It'd be hard to come up with somebody. He can be the MVP this year. It's not going to be him or Yokic. When he came here as a backup point guard to Quatee Green, and now he could be the MVP in the NBA. It's unbelievable. I mean, Quadi Green started over him for like the first half of the season.
Starting point is 00:44:23 Louisville game. It's when he broke out. We were at the Music City Bowl and watching the basketball game on TV from Nashville. And Shay just went absolutely off on that team. And it was just all uphill from there. I'll give you a good documentary to watch on Netflix about the Olympics. Have you seen that about the Olympic basketball? I've seen it most of it.
Starting point is 00:44:43 It's called like Court of Gold. Court of Gold. And they have behind the scenes come cameras with the USA team, Canada, Serbia, and France. And it's really good. And the Canada one has a lot of Shay. Okay. Yeah, the USA one has a lot of BAM and not as much Booker, but a lot of BAM and Anthony Davis. And then Serbia, the Serbia, the coach just screams at Serbia all the time.
Starting point is 00:45:04 And the French, it's just an interesting, it's like behind the scenes at the Olympics. I do want to see it. Even my son, Josiah watched it and said it was good. So when he watched it and said it was good, I knew it had to be something I'd want to see. I was surprised by Durant getting so emotional. He doesn't seem like a guy that's got a lot of feelings, but he cries in it talking about representing the U.S. He's probably, well, he's the best Olympic basketball player of all time. Durant.
Starting point is 00:45:24 Durant? As far as metal count? Four gold medals, but also just what he does in the games. I don't think there's everybody anybody better in basketball in the Olympics. Who's next? Let's go to Nikki. Nicky, go ahead, Nicky. It's him and Kobe probably and Carmel, but he's the best.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Hi, Matt. Long time, first time. Who are? Thank you. I have a question about UK and KWC playing a game at the Sports Center in Owensboro. What about it? Do you want it to happen or what? It did happen.
Starting point is 00:45:57 I just want you to confirm it. In 1998-99, I was there. Well, I can't confirm it, but Ryan may have been there. That was not a game. I think Kentucky did like a barnstorming tour game. Yeah, like a barnstorm. Oh, yeah, yeah. Right, yes.
Starting point is 00:46:15 But they did play because I was there. But they both won their division championships that year. Okay. Well, yeah, nice to talk to you. I appreciate the call. When I, you know, I ran that barnstorming tour one year. Yes, you did. That's a huge hassle, but I did it with Ramell and Joe,
Starting point is 00:46:34 and Kentucky played Marshall in a game in Huntington, West Virginia, and it was one of the most raucous atmospheres I've ever been to. Yeah. Basically, Marshall filled it up with their fans, and then we got all the money, and we were like, okay, well, that's good. We couldn't do it in the last 15 years because of our guys were all going to the NBA. You could almost do it this year with these, this group of guys?
Starting point is 00:46:54 I ain't doing it. Why not? You step in there and do that. I ain't doing it. All right, Kentucky and LSU tonight. Pre-game show starts at 4.30. Cats, what's the spread? What are we at?
Starting point is 00:47:04 I haven't seen it today, but it opened at 12.5. I don't know if there's been any movement or not. Cats a 12-and-a-half-point favorite home. It is senior night. By the way, those ceremonies, I think, started like 640. Is that right? It's usually about 20 minutes. Yeah, UK's telling you be in your seats by 6.
Starting point is 00:47:18 Be in your seats by 630. So the pre-game show is at 4-30, but I would say, They get here early to make sure you can get there to get there for senior night. Kat's 12 and a half point favorite, Ryan, what do we need to do besides when? What they need to do is take that video of the Auburn guys with the bell and put it on a loop in the locker room and make our guys watch it for 50 minutes leading up to tip off. That video is everywhere. ESPN put it out like that video is everywhere.
Starting point is 00:47:47 A caller asked Pope about it on his show last night. Pope's answer was different than Rhines. Pope was like, Pope was with me. and Shannon. Beat them. If you complain, beat them. That's what I would do. I'd put that on a loop, fire them up, get out there, and then beat LSU by 20. Yeah, as I said, they're pretty small,
Starting point is 00:48:02 especially if another one of their guards stays out like he was on the injury report. Just rebound. I think you score inside a lot. They have one player that can go off. Other than that, you know, they're not a very good team. Shannon, you will not be here to make a pick tonight, so make it now. Kentucky wins, 8366.
Starting point is 00:48:18 I'll go with Kobe Bray as my MVP. 8366. That would be a nice one. And cheer for Damian Collins. Yeah, I would say cheer for Damian Collins. And everybody really take a second tonight in the senior day to really thank these guys. I mean, they came here, a little bit of, you know, a little bit of sort of leap of faith with a new coach and a new school. And I think they've really represented the uniform and have appreciated it well and have given us some great wins.
Starting point is 00:48:45 And so I look forward to giving them a big salute. Amen. 430. We will be here for pregame on all of these states. And then I'll be back tonight for the post. This has been KSR. See you later. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy,
