Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host Keir Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Comedy of Broadway and Lexington welcomes Dale Jones, February 14th and 15th. Then catch Lucas Zelnick, February 21st and 22nd. And Don't Miss Club favorite Ian Bagg, February 27th through March 1st.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Comedy of Broadway opened in downtown Lexington in 1987, and they're still bringing the best. and stand-up comedy to the area 38 years later. Call 859-271 joke or visit Comedyoff-Broadway.com. Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, March the 6th. I am Matt Jones here in Lexington, Kentucky at the KS Bar and Grill. On a cloudy day, it snowed last night, which I did not know was going to happen. But you can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop foam line, 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:02:57 What's the A-Vision Auto Glass Text? machine. I say it every day. Do you know the number? 772-724. Well done. Yeah. I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Stop saying that. And this edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office if you call T.J., he'll make them pay. Ryan, we are joined today here at the bar by 20-plus young, impressionable minds from
Starting point is 00:03:19 Owen County High School. So thank you very much for being here. All right, listen, that table back there, you don't get to sit in the back and not clap. Let's try that again. We're joined by the beginning. people promote it. Yeah. All right. This is their, they do media. This media class, it's also they do like a school TV show at Owen County.
Starting point is 00:03:37 And to give people a little background on how this happened, remember one day we were just sitting around and I said, we're going to send Mario somewhere out in the state. We're going to do that again sometime. And I don't remember how we, how did we pick Owen County? I think you just randomly picked it. I think I just randomly picked Owen because I knew he could get there. It wasn't that far away. Right.
Starting point is 00:03:54 And then he went. Next thing you know, they're welcoming him in the school. They got his name up on the board, etc. And then he ends up inviting these folks here, and here we are. They treated him like royalty when he went there to school that day. And they've already disrupted the U.K. sports schedule because Mark Stoops was going to come in here today. But because of Owen County, he was not allowed to come in here. So now we scheduled it to Tuesday because it's like something about, you know, when they can see.
Starting point is 00:04:22 One of you could be the next star football player. So it had to postpone until Tuesday. but we weren't going to miss Owen County, and here they are, Drew. I understand. I see some prospective athletes, got some varsity jackets over here. Looks like a powerlifting hat. Stoops could have gotten in a little trouble being around all these athletes. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Carson Williams was the basketball player from Owen County that lit it up. Like lit it up. One of the best scores in the state. Mr. Basketball that year. Mr. Basketball. And then he went to Northern, and then Western. And his sister is here, which I didn't realize. She was talking to you.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I didn't know he had transferred to Western Kentucky. Yeah, he's got to be by far the best athletes from out of Owen County. Am I right? We played Northern in the tournament and we played him, didn't we? That's what I thought. Yeah, that's right. We played Northern in the first round of the tournament, and I think he played during that game, and we played against him.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Good memory. I'd forgotten that, but I think you're right about that. Yeah, see, I don't remember some things. That was, what, 2018, 2018, 2019? 2016-17-17. So Fox and Monk, okay. Yeah. So Fox and Monk played against him.
Starting point is 00:05:25 I remember playing Northern Kentucky, and I think he did play. play in the game. That's right. Well, 859-28027. Some things to get here to start off. First of all, great clip that Mario put out yesterday of you on television in 1996 when Mark Pope won the national championship with Kentucky. You're a young newscaster. How old are you that year? 29 years old. 29 years old. Such a fresh-faced young chap back then. So much hair. That was the thing that really stuck out to me, that there was so much hair back then. I think I had great hair, and I think Mark Pope also had great hair. Let me ask you a question about Mark Pope's hair.
Starting point is 00:06:04 I was looking. He doesn't have it shaved as close as he normally does. If you looked at the game the other night, his hair almost looked black as it was coming in. But what I noticed is he has a full head of hair, but yet he still chooses to shave it. As someone who is hair challenged, does that offend you? That he could grow hair and chooses not to. Absolutely it does. He's got a full head of hair, man.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Let it grow out. Get an afro, be a hippie. Let it go. Well, maybe not that. But like he could at least, I didn't realize. I thought he did like most people, but it grew in. He actually has hair. Yeah, I've noticed that too.
Starting point is 00:06:46 You can kind of see his hair line. It's where it should be. It's kind of what he and Buzz Williams, both voluntarily go bust. A Buzz did not voluntarily. Remember, Buzz put it in. Yeah. I think Pope actually somebody asked him about it, and he said, when you grow up with five women in your house, you don't have time to do anything with your hair. So he just cut it down so he didn't have to do anything with it.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Just wake up. Oh, is that right? Yeah. He made that comment. Yeah, he goes, I don't have time to do anything with my hair because all my daughters have all the bathroom time. So it was interesting watching that clip besides how young you were, is that Mark Pope, even back then was like a joke guy. Like he was, is that what you remember him? and you could also tell, by the way, he talked smart even back there.
Starting point is 00:07:28 He always had a little smirk on his face, was trying to, you know, have some fun with you. And Cutler and him had a good rapport. They always did stuff like that throughout the season. And that was right before March Madness, Mark shows up to talk to Cutler, and he's got holes in his socks. Right there, these are. Yeah, remember that. Bill Keightly wouldn't give him new socks. Wouldn't give him new socks.
Starting point is 00:07:47 And here we are going to go to March Madness trying to make a run, and they got holes in all their socks. Well, it was a good video, and thank you to a guy came to the show yesterday. he had a little thumb drive that had like two hours of Mark Pope 1996 material, and Mario's going to put it out throughout the course of the year, or through the March Madness run. Now, yesterday, Drew, big night last night for Kentucky and the SEC. Pretty much everything we wanted to happen happened. Oklahoma beat Missouri, that's good.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Now, if we beat Missouri on Saturday, we will actually win the tiebreaker against them and be tied. Then Ole Miss beat Tennessee. I know some people wanted the other result, but it guarantees we do not play on Wednesday. So Kentucky gets a buy in the SEC tournament. Thank you to Ole Miss for winning that game. And I guess the simplest way to describe it now is
Starting point is 00:08:35 lose to Missouri, we're the 8th seat, playing Thursday at 1 o'clock. So if you're watching that game and we lose, we're the 8th seed Thursday at 1 o'clock. If we win, because of all those results, we're not the 8th seed. We will either be the 5, the 6, or the 7. So we can get all the way up
Starting point is 00:08:52 to a five seed. A lot of stuff would have to happen. But looking at it, Drew, the most likely result, if we win, is a six, which would put us going up against the three seed in the second round, which is Tennessee. It would avoid Arkansas because a lot of us don't want to have to play a second game like that. Drew, I think you beat Missouri after all these ups and downs and ups and downs. I think if you beat Missouri, you get a three seed in the NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:09:21 you get a buy in the SEC and you get to play a Tennessee team you've already beaten twice in the quarter finals. I don't know that you could ask for anything better than that if you can get that win Saturday. Definitely and they took a bad loss last night so they're going the wrong direction. I was
Starting point is 00:09:37 watching Ole Miss Tennessee. Ole Miss tried to give that away by the way, but I was just screaming haughty-toddy at my television. I know some people wanted to Tennessee to win to help Kentucky get a higher seed. I just wanted to get away from Wednesday before the weekend. For me, Getting away from the Wednesday was the key.
Starting point is 00:09:52 I mean, first of all, I think it's going to be almost impossible for us to win the SEC tournament. But if you wanted to have a chance, you can't play five games in the five days. And even if you do, you might kill yourself for the NCAA tournament. And now you get a chance to where if you win, get out of that slot where you – I mean, if you win against Missouri, you can probably get to a place where you don't even play in the Auburn bracket. And you could actually have a chance. You'd be down there with Tennessee and Florida. Teams you have already beaten.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Like, it seems pretty good. I think it's a good time to catch Missouri. They've lost, what, three of their last four or something like that? And they're kind of slumping in here at the end of the season. Slide in there, get that win. And you put yourself in a better position in the tournament. All right, so did you see the U.K., do you see the Ole Miss court storm? Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:10:35 All right, so we've got to ask you. I wanted to join them. Well, all right, so if you didn't see, they won. They tried to block them from storming the court. All right? So nobody, like, they block them. They keep almost everybody. But like 30 people get on the court.
Starting point is 00:10:51 then they get Tennessee off and then all the other students come. But here's my question for you if you're the SEC. 30 people got through. It's a $500,000 fine if that was considered a court storm. If 30 college kids break through the ranks and get on the floor, is that enough for the $500,000 fine? And if not, then how many would it take? How many people breaks the line for you?
Starting point is 00:11:21 to where you now should be fine. See, that's why it's going to be tricky for the SEC office. You know, if they let it slide, okay, what if the next game? Then 50 people slide on. The next game, 60 people. Where do you draw the line? That's what I just asked you. So what is the answer to the question?
Starting point is 00:11:35 I don't need you to repeat the question. What is the answer? I don't know how you can find them $500,000 for last night. That was, you know, 30 kids out there run around. But if you asked me to set the line, I say the line would be 100. So you would say 100? So you would not find them for last night? I would not.
Starting point is 00:11:52 So we're going to go out and count heads? Well, that's what I'm saying. Like, it's easy to, like, are you really going to say it's 100 people? What if it's 101? Yeah. You're going to find them? Like, I actually think it's tough. What would you do if you were, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:12:05 If you 30 people ran out there. That was more like a court drizzle than a court storm. But I think that if anybody runs out on the court, that's got to be considered. Okay. Now, let me take you the other one. If you say anybody, what if just one guy runs? out there. Is it 500,000 for one guy? I think it is. I think, yeah. He goes to jail. You're telling me a, okay, well, he goes to jail, but you're telling me one security guard
Starting point is 00:12:29 screws up and can't hold somebody back. Yeah. And one person goes out there and you're charging the school $500,000. Yep. You better make sure you got good security. I see, I don't know. I think it's a tough, like it was more than a couple, but it wasn't a full storm. What do you do, Drew? Write the check, Ole Miss. 30 people. That's a student section. Some student sections don't get 30 people at some of these games. Some of them don't. I don't know where exactly you draw the line, but 30 is well over it for me. Maybe like 10.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Oh, yeah. Well, then they should have just let them all go. Exactly. If you're already paying. When 30 break through, it's too late. That's 30 students on the court. That is, it's more of a sprinkle, but it's still rushing the court and storming it. Now, what if somebody from Ole Miss went to the microphone, like they've done in some schools
Starting point is 00:13:10 and say don't storm the court, and yet then 30 did it? Well, but I mean, just saying it's not a. enough because then they'll just say it every game like what if you just said it and then no security tried to stop them i mean i think you have to put it on the school to stop them i don't know i watched it and i thought this is going to be this is going to be a real challenge for the cc and it's also shows the cc now is taking the biggest keep people off the court because it's a half million dollars and the story about you have to pay the school that you played against so they would have to write a check to Tennessee for a half million dollars.
Starting point is 00:13:50 Wow. I don't know if you saw the Georgia game the other night. Kirby Smart got on the microphone during the Georgia game and said, do not storm the court. I need to use this money to get a player. That's perfect. And I think that actually worked, to be honest with you, because I think they were playing all.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Who are they playing? Maybe Tennessee or Florida or somebody like that. And they were like, I don't want to give it to them. So I don't know, Drew. It's kind of an interesting new development. I watched that one, too. That was the Florida game. The upset Florida.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Their AD and Kirby Smart were begging. Like, do you all like football? Please don't run on this court. We need players. And I think we've seen Missouri do it. Ole Miss has now done it. The Texas A&M do it on Saturday. It's become kind of common around the conference to beg students not to rush.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Well, either way, I thought that was interesting. And for Kentucky, I don't know that last night could have gone a lot better. There are still scenarios as to how you get the five, how you get the six, how you get the seven. but the basics of it are to lose eight seed win five, six, or seven. And then who you play and all that is still up in the air. But really last night, Drew, as well as it could have for Kentucky. Yeah, and I'm really just excited to get past Saturday. SEC scenarios have taken years off my life.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Last night, we turned on the Americas with Tom Hanks, pretty little animals, nature. It's like planet Earth round two. Tom Hanks is the guy. It's only America. I should have been paying attention, but my brain was like, all right, if LSU wins. I even went as far, I got up and nerded out and got the actual percentages. I took Ken Palm's analytics per game. You did not do that.
Starting point is 00:15:25 We have a 9% chance of being the 5 seed, a 23% chance of being the 6 seed, a 63% of the 8th seed, and then whatever, I don't have that in my notes, but add those and then that's the 7th seat. If you're looking at what is most likely, lose 8, win 6, I think that's the more, but that's a big difference. That's the difference between playing at 1 o'clock or at 9.30. I mean, if we win Saturday, we've got the game. It's probably that late, late game that puts us in bed at 2 a.m.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Yeah, because it doesn't start until after 10. 10.30 sometimes. It gets running late back out there. Yeah, 859-280, 2287. Tax machine is 772-7524. Glad to have Owen County here, the Rebels. Is that what you all are? The Owen County Rebels gave me a hoodie. And we'll take a break and be right back.

And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field
Starting point is 00:17:18 and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about, wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, IHeartRadio app.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WMBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but. Don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets. the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant this went to a billion dollar fraud.
Starting point is 00:19:50 But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-28027 here. We've got our friends from Owen County. They were telling me, first of all, Carson Williams' sister, what's your name? Kelsey. She was a great athlete in and of herself. Leads the school all-time in block shots and rebounds.
Starting point is 00:20:38 They also said they had a female kicker on the football team, a girl kicker who got a like had 28 extra points, and according to one of the guys back there, would lay a guy out if needed to. So that's my kind of woman. Just smack a dude right in the face if they needed to. So I like that. Scared me the way he described her. I'm scared of her.
Starting point is 00:20:56 That's exactly right. Shannon, we can't talk about it, obviously, because you can't use the words. Yeah. And because of who's here. But I sent you a video. It was a great video. I just saw it during the break. It was, they've made a, okay, you remember the topic?
Starting point is 00:21:11 A couple shows ago about. what a lot of women I know like to read. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a song that got made of that that's going viral. Just coincidentally, as if we just, Shannon, we just talked about this, and then it gets viral. And I made Shannon laugh, which is very hard to do, actually. It is, yeah. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:21:32 One person goes, Matt, why don't they just make the fans pay the five? Yeah, good luck. Look at those 30 people and say, y'all split 500,000? So what? You guys each, kids, I want you each to give us $17,000 if that's okay. These are primarily poor college kids. They're not poor. They're not poor.
Starting point is 00:21:53 I don't know when the last time you've been to Ole Miss is, but I don't think a lot of them are poor, but still I don't think you're getting $17,000. No, I guess you could do something like if you're one of the ones on the court, we can punish you through the school. I mean, you can't ask them for money, but little things like I remember getting my report, or my, what's it called?
Starting point is 00:22:12 I don't even have any more. Couldn't even get the diploma until you paid your parking tickets. Maybe you could do something like punish them through the school. All right, so I do have to say before we go to the phones, last night in Lexington was absolutely wild. Do you know why? No, I don't know why. They opened the publics out there next to citation.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Now, you all in Owen County, you don't have these. Well, we didn't have them until last night. And I don't know. Did they announce it or did they just randomly do it? No, I've been getting mail about it for weeks. Okay, so they opened the publics last night. I didn't know what was happening, okay? I had to drive to Georgetown to get my Georgetown College check, right?
Starting point is 00:22:52 So I drive, when I come back, I'm like, what is going on? Why are there people everywhere? And then I saw it was opening. I pulled into that parking lot, you would have thought that, like, Kendrick Lamar was playing inside. There were people everywhere. There was not a parking spot. I drove around. I was like, I got an extra few minutes.
Starting point is 00:23:14 I just want to go in there and see why Mario loves it so much. Mario's like Mario's more excited than anybody. There was not a spot to park anywhere. There were people honking at each other. What is going on? Why were people losing their mind so much? I saw a picture on Facebook for the pub subs, and those are good, but the line people were waiting for it to get a sandwich was unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:23:37 I saw someone commented it. three-hour wait to get a sandwich? On TikTok, there was a guy who said it was a two to three-hour wait to get a sub-samblish. What could be so good about them? My dad actually went over there to see it. He said he couldn't even get near the area where people were lined up. It was so busy inside. He kind of just went in and left because you couldn't even move.
Starting point is 00:23:57 I'm not even kidding. There was not a parking space anywhere. And that is a huge parking lot. It is. And there was not a parking space. Like, why do you think people felt the need to be there? yesterday. Like, it's going to be open for the next however long. It's just, you know, the grand opening.
Starting point is 00:24:14 Like, when you guys opened your Cracker Barrow in Middlesboro, man, you're excited about something new coming in. You think it's the same as the Cracker Barrel in Middlesbrough? I believe it is, yeah. So here's Josiah and I have made a plan. You know, it's out there by my house. We said, let's not go the opening day. We'll go the next day. So we have a father's son trip this afternoon to go to Publix, and I'm so excited. So you're just excited as these people.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Yes. It's just a grocery store. It's grocery store on crack. It's like really good. That doesn't sound good. First of all, everybody I've ever seen on crack is not happy. So I wouldn't think that would be positive. They're opening three in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:24:50 There's going to be three of them when it's all going to be like this every time? Probably. Probably because we're all different parts of town. I was there when they opened the Rhein Steakhouse in Middlesbril, and I saw that. I was there when they opened the Taco Bell and Pineville, and I saw that. I have not seen a furor like I saw. and I just wandered into it from that public's end. I've never seen anything like it.
Starting point is 00:25:13 I couldn't either. For a sandwich. I mean, they're good, but I can get them in a few months. It's a grocery store. Yeah. I went to Kroger yesterday. Team Kroger's store. So on the scale of how nice grocery stores are, what are we talking about?
Starting point is 00:25:25 Like, Whole Foods is probably the nicest. Am I right? Prater Joe's and Whole Foods? Probably. Is this as nice as that or no? It's behind it. Is it ahead of Kroger? It's ahead of Kroger.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Are you sure? Okay, so we go. Like Trader Joe's Whole Foods, then Publix, and then Kroger. So you're going Kroger Dap. All right. I'm putting Kroger about it. My understanding, I've only been on vacation in Florida. The grocery stuff, usually they're getting groceries.
Starting point is 00:25:58 It's a grocery store. But their sandwiches and the deli and the food they make to serve is what sets them apart. All right. Well, Ryan, give us a report tomorrow. I suggest to Owen County, when this is over, go visit somewhere at UK. Maybe they just want to go see the publics if they really want to know what's going on.
Starting point is 00:26:14 All right, who's up first, Shannon? Brandon. Brandon. Go ahead, Brandon. First time, long time. Who are? What's up, sir? So I played against Carson Williams when I was in eighth grade.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Oh, wow. They can't hear you. They can't hear you, but I'll have to repeat. This guy played against Carson Williams, but go ahead. I was in eighth grade, and I was at there. Owen County gym playing them. We were in the locker room and we were getting ready for the game
Starting point is 00:26:43 and all of a sudden there was this thundering sound coming from outside of the locker room and like nobody knew what was going on. And we ended up going out there and we walk out and all we see as soon as we walk out is this guy's in the middle of the air windmilling and it's Carson Williams
Starting point is 00:27:02 as an age radio. Okay, doing windmill dunks. I thought you meant like as a halftime show. Yeah. Yeah, no, windmill dunk in it at like 13 or 14 years old. So you're claiming that Carson Williams did windmill dunks in eighth grade? That's hard for me to believe. Even his sister looks a little surprised by that comment.
Starting point is 00:27:23 We saw it. I saw it. It was crazy. But, yeah, so he was a hard guard and he was a really good ball player. I appreciate the call. I agree. So give me some of that. You're good at this.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Give me some names of like, didn't go play. or even played in college, but not at a major school, Kentucky high school guys over the years. Sort of the – we always talk about in the 13th region, Nick Sanford out at K. Wood back in the 80s, who was like a great player? Who else do you think of? Ty Profit from South Laurel ended up going to Moorhead State and got them into the NCAA tournament. He's the first one to pop to mine. What's the kid – what's the kid's name at Holy Cross?
Starting point is 00:28:03 It's their – Max Green. Max Green. Max Green. Yeah. He plays at Holy Cross now. He's really good. Yeah, that might be a – dude, you might want to look up something if you don't know who that is.
Starting point is 00:28:11 How about Ty Rogers? He might want to know something about Max Green from Holy Cross. I mean, I'm not saying, I'm just saying, but go ahead. Ty Rogers with the famous buzzer beater in the NCAA tournament from Lyon County for Western. What was the kid's name from Hart County that was so good that went to Louisville? I'm drawing a blank. Wasn't there a kid from Hart County that went to Louisville? I'm drawing a blank.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Yeah, I thought you were good at this. You are getting old. What happened? You used to know all these people's names. Well, I mean, I could come up with a bunch of guys, but you're talking about playing in smaller schools? Yeah, just like guys, I mean, I can come up with Darius Miller, but like guys that played at, you know. Malachi Marino's brother, Michael Marino went to EKU and had a great career. He was good. He was really good.
Starting point is 00:28:54 Well, if you can think of other sort of schoolboy like Carson Williams Legends, we could look up the Mr. Basketball. That's a good idea. That'll help us with it. We'll take a break. 859-280-2287. Be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. personal injury attorney. Call T.J.
Starting point is 00:29:11 He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back to Kentucky Sports Radio. Tick Rogers was a guy one looking for from Hart County. You couldn't think of his name. Now, this young woman back here told me there's two twins.
Starting point is 00:29:27 What's their name? More? Tegan and Lexie from Owen County that went to the Sweet 16, or with the All-A Classic, played at Western and Pikeville. So he'd give a little Owen County athletes. Now, some of what I was looking for of like great high school names, how about Elijah Justice from Shelby County? There was the name I was talking about. I went to Louisville for a couple years. He played a couple schools. Yeah, he sure did.
Starting point is 00:29:51 All right, what else you got? Give me, read me some Mr. Basketball. Start it like, started like 1996 and give me a few. Before he does his list, can I add J.R. Van Hoost that went to Marshall and became a hallfinner. That was my first Sweet 16. J.R. is very active on Twitter. He has, very active. You think I'm an outspoken liberal in Kentucky. You ought to see what J.R. Van Hoose says. All right, so give me a few of them here. 1996.
Starting point is 00:30:16 Damien Fishback. Oh, of course, went to Auburn. And it's now on the games. Yeah, now on the games. 97, see if this will be a breach. Brandon Davenport. Now, I don't know who that is. Where did he go to school?
Starting point is 00:30:27 He was a little guy my size of played at Owensboro. Oldsboro High School. All right. 98 is J.R. Van Hoos. 99. Rick Jones. Went to Vandy. Shannon?
Starting point is 00:30:36 Wasn't he a Vandy guy? Yeah, okay. And they ended up at Murray State. Then in 2000, Scott Hunley. Back to back. Also, Vandy. You go see another Vandy guy. Okay.
Starting point is 00:30:44 Now, listen to this run here. 2001, Josh Carrier. Kentucky. 2002, Brandon Stockton. Kentucky. Both of them beat Louisville, the famous chess bump game. Yes. 2003, Ross Neltener.
Starting point is 00:30:56 More Vandy. Vandy. Vandy just took all the Mr. basketballs? All the Vandies went Ross Nelton. Where did Ross Neltener play? Highlands. Four Thomas Highlands.
Starting point is 00:31:06 Highlands. Okay. All right, keep going. I'm liking this. Chris Lofton in 2004. I've heard of him, went to Tennessee. Your favorite player? Can I say something about Chris Lofton for a minute?
Starting point is 00:31:15 I guess I missed this news. So I keep seeing on the SEC network these promos for this thing with Chris Lofton, this documentary. I did not realize that he, do you know what the major thing is? Yeah. Did you know that? Well, he didn't tell anybody. He didn't tell his teammates, didn't tell his coach, didn't tell anybody until years after he graduated from Tennessee. testicular cancer, right?
Starting point is 00:31:39 And got it during his senior year? He got the diagnosis. And he played his whole senior year with it. He played his senior year with it. I believe so, yeah. And did not tell his teammates. Didn't tell anybody. Nobody knew about it.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Is that something that has been known? Well, once it finally came out, years after he finished playing at Tennessee, it finally came out. So he played his senior year and didn't get treatment during it? He may have. I don't know that. The documentary may say that. Documentary's coming up on Monday night.
Starting point is 00:32:06 I did not know that And is that why he didn't play He played overseas a little bit, right? Yeah, he played overseas for several years after Tennessee Like even I think after his diagnosis, he still continued to play When I saw the documentary And they kept saying he came and said something serious I didn't know what they were talking about
Starting point is 00:32:22 And then hubby told me, all right, keep going Let's see, after Chris Lofton, 2005 Dominique Tilford No idea of that. Jefferson Town in Louisville Do you remember that person? Yeah, I remember him Okay, didn't know that one. Where is it? 2006, Walt Allen from South Laurel. No memory of that.
Starting point is 00:32:38 All right. 2007, Stefan Pettigrew. Okay, where did he get? He's from Bowling Green, right? He played it Western. He's a Hilltopper. Yeah, played. Then he wasn't he from Boeing Green?
Starting point is 00:32:46 From Elizabethtown. Oh, same thing. Okay. 2008, Darius Miller. Of course. 2009, John Hood. Yeah. All right, two straight cats.
Starting point is 00:32:54 2010, Elijah Justice. All right, then we were just talking about him. 2011, Anthony Hickey. Oh, Tennessee, right? No, no, no, LSU. He's from Hoptown. He was very motivated when he played Kentucky. 2012 Nathan Doudone
Starting point is 00:33:07 Nathan Doudone I may be mispronouncing his last name I think that's right he was a big guy at Trinity Nathan Dudone I think that's right you're making that name up Go ahead 2013 Dominic Hawkins Dominic Hawkins who was not going to get a scholarship
Starting point is 00:33:20 offer from Kentucky remember Kentucky Kentucky loses to Robert Morris which allows John Cala Perry to go to the Sweet 16 which otherwise I don't think he would have gone to I agree Dominic Hawkins goes off and he offers him a scholarship That's one of the great, unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:33:38 If we beat Robert Morris, Dominic Hawkins probably doesn't end up playing here, Drew, you know? And then has a great career given the circus. Was he the SEC tournament? Was he won the MVP one year? All-SCC tournament one year, which is nuts. All right, keep going. After Dominic Hawkins, 2014, Quentin Snyder. Louisville.
Starting point is 00:33:58 He went to Louisville. Yeah, okay. From Ballard, and we went to Louisville. 2015, Cameron Justice. Oh, Cam Justice. Another one, Van, Van, Matt. Another Vandy guy. 2016, Carson Williams, Owen County High School.
Starting point is 00:34:10 All right. 2017, Tavion Hollingsworth. I know that name. Hill Topper, that's right. He's also election, right? He's Fayette County's career scoring leader now. Well, no, I think he just got broke by Marcus Ward. We interviewed him on Hey, Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:34:25 That's right. Okay. John Barrett. Yes. 2018, Trayvon Faulkner. Actually, Tavion Hollinsworth co-hosted Hey, Kentucky with me one day. Did he really? I think he did.
Starting point is 00:34:35 Yes, okay, go ahead. Trayvon Faulkner, 2018, from Mercer County, went to Northern Kentucky. Don't remember him. 2019, Dante Allen. Heard of him. 2020. Wyoming Star. Davion McNight.
Starting point is 00:34:48 Another hilltopper. Another hilltopper. Okay. 21? Ben Johnson. No, Lexington Catholic, Ben Johnson. We had the, I'm with Ben shirts. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Where did he go? Bellerman. Bellerman. Yeah. Yeah. 2020, Turner Butteary. Don't know that name. He's a starting guard now at E.
Starting point is 00:35:05 B. KU. Why are you shaking your head? Buttery. Is it butchery? I thought it was Butry. Well, you're wrong. I'm wrong. 2023, a guy by the name of Reed Shepard. Heard of him. 24, a guy by the name of Travis Perry.
Starting point is 00:35:18 Heard of him. All right, well, there you go. Nice little walkdown. That's a hell of a list, you know? That's a walk down memory lane there. All right, Shannon, people are making fun of me for going to Georgetown to get my check. Why are they making fun of me? Well, they say they have this great thing now called direct deposit that you can take advantage.
Starting point is 00:35:32 I like to hold the check in my hand. Finally, I heart. Did you know IHeart made me get direct deposit? They did? They were like, we're not mailing you checks anymore. And you have to get direct deposit. But I still go get by hand, my check from Georgetown. So how far of a drive-in were we talking for you?
Starting point is 00:35:47 Oh, it's 15. 15. That's not too bad. But then you've got to drive it to the bank that deposit in your account. I go to the bank once or twice a week. Yeah. I do. I go to the bank still a lot.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Well, the thing, I can't get my app to work. So the only way I know how much money I have is to go to the bank. So I go in there and go, I'm like a 90-year-old woman. I go in there and go, will you tell me what's in my house? Go in there, you get your sucker, you check your deposits. Exactly, right. My app does not work, and I have no way of checking it. I know the bank you're talking about because the app doesn't work for me either.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Is it a fraction bank? Yeah, I will say. To fifth third, fix your app. I can't log on. My app has never worked at one time at fifth third. All right, go ahead. Who me? Oh, you want me to go ahead.
Starting point is 00:36:25 Okay, Joe. No, I mean, who's next? This is what I'm saying. Yeah, Joe. Joe, go ahead, Joe. Yeah, hey, how you doing? It's just a little bit. I want to talk about Jackson Robinson leaving.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Take us off, Speaker. Go ahead. Oh, yeah. So got to shift gears, Jackson Robinson, losing him this year really hurt my favorite player. But after the LSU game, I mean, is there a world where our offense runs better with Kobe Brayas starting because it forces us to shoot more three? Yeah, I don't think so. I appreciate the call. I mean, he's at, do you think that the offense could be better without Jackson Robinson? And that's hard for me to say yes to, if nothing else, just for depth.
Starting point is 00:37:07 But I do think the starting five with Brea can be as powerful as the starting five with Robinson. But I just think you miss his depth. But the starting five, I think, can be just as good. Yeah, I can't. In no world do I think they're better off with Bray over Robinson. I mean, he had some games where he disappeared defensively. But he also had some games where he made some good defensive stops. He got a lot of deflections.
Starting point is 00:37:29 He was pretty active. I think they'll miss that a little more when you're comparing. him to Kobe Brea, but I was surprised yesterday that Robinson was named a finalist for the Julius Irving Award. I mean, that's a small forward, best in the country, with his injury status and just how the year win. I was surprised to see him make that list. Yeah, he makes a really good point, Ryan, about defense.
Starting point is 00:37:47 I mean, like, Kobe Brea, for all his strengths is, I mean, you guys can guard better than he can. Like, he's not a defender. So I do think you miss his defense quite a bit. Well, there's no doubt about it. You know, we had the same conversation when Lamont Butler was out, you know, and Brett Brea was starting. Did they make them a better offensive team? And you know, you can make the argument either way. But definitely not madame in Jackson Robinson. I mean, he was becoming a star,
Starting point is 00:38:11 I think. He was just trying to find himself when he got hurt really bad. Yeah, I do too. Who's next? David. David, 859-28027. Go ahead, David. Hey, guys. Thanks for taking my call. Listen, Matt, I got four rapid fire points if you'll give me 30 seconds. I won't give you 30, but I'll let you go fast. Go. Okay, one. The hair thing, I think the Pope-Hairs situation might be like that episode of Seinfeld where, who was at, Elaine's boyfriend, had a baldhead, and then he tried to grow it and realized he couldn't. Okay.
Starting point is 00:38:43 Second. Public's the new Buckees. Is Publix the new Buckees? Better than Buckees. Oh, it's better than Buckees? Yeah. Why is it better? Just they've got better food.
Starting point is 00:38:55 Wow. You really are excited. I'm so excited. Better than the Beaver Nuggets, huh? Look, your baby Billy shirt is on fire. What's next? No, go to your next one real quick. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:06 I'll go to the fourth one. So I think the reps go into the review and all the injuries are trying to the biggest thing that people are not talking about in basketball, which is the physical. I think that the college basketball game is way too physical. I think that something needs to done about it because we're seeing injuries way too often, in my opinion. I'll hang up a listen to me. Yeah, you know, I think I appreciate the call. I think the college basketball game had gotten way too physical a few years ago. I think a few years ago the college basketball game was kind of hard to worry.
Starting point is 00:39:33 watch because of how physical it was. I do think it's better. I mean, I don't think it's as physical. I think we've gotten hurt a lot, but a lot of that has just been random. I mean, non-contact injuries or just something, you know, when Rodinson got hurt at Oklahoma, he just fell wrong. I mean, some of that you can't help. There are a couple teams.
Starting point is 00:39:52 Like, if you watch a Georgia game, I don't even think they want a basketball to be on the court. They're just out there to fight. And they and them, they're scrappy. I blame them for injuring Lamont Butler. So there are a few teams that need to clean it up in the SEC. But do you also have teams like Alabama, Florida, Auburner scoring 90 points? It's like a few years ago nobody was scored 90 in the SEC.
Starting point is 00:40:12 I mean, I was think about, I mean, I watched the game the other night where it was 48, 48 from like 10 years ago with a minute left. Like you just, I think it's, I think the game, I think college basketball, the sport is significantly better than it was five to six years ago. Oh, I agree. And a lot of a lot of guys don't like that five out offense to run. want to go to the post. But it's kind of been neat to see how Amari Williams has developed where he's learned how to be that post player guy, and yet he could go out and play on the perimeter. He can do both offenses, really.
Starting point is 00:40:43 With Pope's system, I hope they start calling more because he's even called the refs out in the post game. Someone asked, like, why didn't Bray getting open? And he just said they're holding him doing everything they can to keep him from getting a shot. Volunteers of America, Mid-States is part of Volunteers of America. It's been founded 125 years ago. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levan this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287 here. Got lunch, the 10 minutes. KS. Bar opens. Got a good group of Owen County students
Starting point is 00:45:43 and then some other folks here. All right, you're going to speak for the American people. I believe in the American people. So I don't know if you've seen, if you watch the news. There's so much happening in the news, it's sometimes hard to keep up. But one of the things that happened is President Trump and the weirdo Elon Musk. They keep firing people, right? So, like, people, they keep letting government workers go,
Starting point is 00:46:03 and then the courts come in and go, you have to hire that person back. It's happened, like, a bunch of times. And then this morning I saw that, like, 5,000 workers for some branch, maybe whatever, they fired them all, and then they've come back three weeks later and said, you know what, we kind of need you to come back. I don't know, maybe they were doing something that was important.
Starting point is 00:46:23 Maybe they should have figured that out before they fired them. But they came back and they said to those people, hey, we need you to come back. Now, the question is, they said, like, I saw an interview where one of the guys in the health and human services was like, we really need these people to come back. They said, well, what do they do? And like, we don't want to talk about it, but we really need them to come back. So, Ryan Lemon, you're going to speak for the American people. Let's say you're Ryan Lemon federal government work.
Starting point is 00:46:46 Gotcha. All right. Three weeks ago, you got fired. Yes. And told you were out. Get out of here. Now, three weeks later, you've been like looking for jobs. What am I going to do?
Starting point is 00:46:55 Blah, blah, blah, blah. Three weeks later, they come back and you go, you know what? We were thinking about it, and we need you again. You're a very prideful man. You're a person who I know holds a grudge more than any on one I know. Are you coming back three or four weeks later and going, you know what, everything's fine? Or are you going to go, forget it, you fired me, I'm out. And I haven't found another job in these three weeks.
Starting point is 00:47:21 Let's say that there's something you could do that's maybe not quite as good, but still good. but they fired you and now they ask you to come back. If I had a job where I was making even close to the same amount of money, middle fingers in the air, I'm taking the other job. I'm walking away. How close does the money have to be? Well, I've got to consider my family. It's got to be enough I can support my family.
Starting point is 00:47:44 I know I could do it on the government job. So if the new job is anywhere close to that, I think I would walk. So let's say it wasn't. Let's say, I mean, you would come back if you had to, right? Absolutely. What you feel weird about? Yes, I would feel weird about it. I'm always looking over my shoulder.
Starting point is 00:48:01 Like, I go, let me go again, just on a whim. You know, Donald Trump farts in the air and... I don't think that has anything to do with it. And some more people get fired. Would you come back? Yes, I would come back and they would get my C effort. I'd give about 50% every day and just sit there. And if you want to fire me again for that, oh, well, you already fired me once.
Starting point is 00:48:21 I'm just going to go be about as lazy as I can be on the clock. So you would come back and use his excuse to do less? Yeah, I would go back and I would do half of what I did before. So when they wrote you at the end of the week and said, what are the five things you've done? You'd only write three. I don't even know if I'd answer. I wouldn't even reply.
Starting point is 00:48:36 I would just go take as much money as I could until they fired me. You are kind of like Ryan. You hold a grudge. Oh, yeah. Are you coming back? I'm coming back, but not for the same pay. You are paying me a lot more. I'm using that as leverage.
Starting point is 00:48:47 You want me to come back. That's fine. I'll come back. But it's going to be a significant raise when I come back. It's going to cost you. Interesting. Good answer. I like that answer.
Starting point is 00:48:56 I don't know. I think I could get over it a lot quicker than you could, Ryan. But I also, it would annoy me. But the problem is, like, if you have an employer, private employer, and they do something like that, you can just be angry and kind of yell at them. But let's say you're angry at the government. Who are you going to yell at? Like, there's nobody, like you can, if you're not going to be able to yell at Elon Musk,
Starting point is 00:49:17 so what are you going to do? You're just going to be like, well, I'm angry, but I guess I need the job, so I'll come back. Shannon brings it a good point. If they sweeten the pot a little bit, I think we'd be happy to go back. I don't know how much the government can sweeten the pot. Plus, the whole point was to save money. If they sweeten the pot, that's even worse. It's going to be even worse when they don't have anybody working there.
Starting point is 00:49:37 Well, that's true. I think some of these jobs, they were like, you know what? We do need someone to watch these nuclear reactors over here. That might be nice. All right. Who's up next? Mike. Mike.
Starting point is 00:49:47 Mike, go ahead, Mike. Hey, Matt. So, you know, I'm kind of like Potter Stewart on this court court. storming deal. You know, I know it when I see it. Yeah. That's right. And that that wasn't court storming last night. There was no players in danger at any point. Yeah. And they controlled it. Once the Tennessee was off the floor, they allowed them on the floor. So, I mean, I think they actually did a nice job with that. So the other piece is we've got to get a handle on these fans throwing stuff on the floor or on the football field. It was really poetic justice,
Starting point is 00:50:22 in my opinion that Tennessee missed a critical free throw after Ole Miss threw something on the floor, but there should have been a technical call on the Ole Miss team to reach whatever you want to call it. Really good point. I appreciate the call. Let's talk about that play. At one point Tennessee was shooting a free throw
Starting point is 00:50:39 and someone in the crowd for Old Miss threw something on the court that he missed the free throw. What do you think they didn't do anything? Chris Beard got on the microphone and said stop throwing stuff, but do you think maybe that should have been a, technical since you could argue maybe it had a small impact on the game. I think if after Chris Beard said that, if they threw something else, it's got to be a technical. They got to step in at some point.
Starting point is 00:51:04 What makes people think they can throw? I don't know. Like, I mean, we've seen it at football games. We've seen it at baseball games. Now we're seeing it at basketball games. I feel like it's happening a lot more now than it used to. Like what makes people just think you can just throw things out on the court? I mean, this was during the guy's free throw.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Insane. I mean, we just had Brandon Garrison almost get taken. out with a full beer can. You got Tennessee throwing mustard and golf balls and all that a few years ago. I mean, I've been at games and I've done some... That was against Old Miss, though, wasn't it? I've done some of the best heckling you can heckle, but never cross my mind to throw something or do anything that crosses the line like that.
Starting point is 00:51:40 I really can't believe they would do that. I did wonder, I kind of agree with the caller, even though I was wanting Old Miss to win, I was kind of surprised they didn't call a technical, because it did have like a material impact on the game, or at least it felt like you could have argued that it did. Absolutely. The kid missed a free throw. So do you think they should have given him another free throw? That's probably the most fair thing to do, but I'm not sure in the rules you can do that.
Starting point is 00:52:06 I'm not sure in the rules you can just say, well, you get another free throw because I don't know if you can do that. If my team's at the line, I'm throwing something at my own team. That's actually a extra shot at this. You have to think about what the ramifications. If you can get an extra free throw in it, then you would throw it and say, well, at least you get two chances at it. I'll throw something at Amari in the tournament if he gets another look at it. That's true.
