Starting point is 00:03:14 Sponsored by Clayton and Kroom. Go to Clayton and Kroom.com. Use promo code KSR, $25 off a purchase of $100 or more. People are now writing in, Ryan, with all the time. they get up and they go to work. One person writes, Matt, I get up at 3.45 a.m. Every day, I go to the gym at 4.30 and I'm at work by 7. So I don't feel sorry for you having to get up at 7.
Starting point is 00:03:39 I didn't ask you to feel sorry for me, first of all. Nobody I didn't ask you feels. I just said that's early for me. Anybody, though, who goes to the gym at 4.30 in the morning, are the gyms even open at 430? Oh, yeah. There's gyms that are open 24 hours. You just have a key card to go in. I cannot physically.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Imagine walking into a gym at 4.30 in the morning. Well, you don't have to wait for anybody to get out your way. You can get on any machine that you want. It's nice. But it's still 4.30 in the morning. Right. And you don't have to work out later in the day now because you already got it knocked out for the morning. I don't know how people do that.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Good. Like, more power to you. I'm glad you're able to do it. I couldn't do it. There is no way I could do something like that. We used to have 6 a.m. practices. That used to just destroy me. I couldn't believe people actually do this on a daily, weekly basis.
Starting point is 00:04:22 All right. Now, I like this question. Drew, I feel like this is a question to ask you. Okay. I want to hear your answer. One person writes in and goes, Matt, for the last seven years, I've gone to the SEC tournament on a couple's trip. It doesn't sound as much fun as you and your friends, but it's me and my wife and three other
Starting point is 00:04:39 couples. I don't think the other couples will be listening to this show, but they could be, but I still have to ask the question anyway. One of my wife's friends has a husband whose breath stinks. He said, I hope they are listening is my answer. He said, I've dealt with this for the last few years, and otherwise, I think the guy's awesome. We pretty much talk about everything, and we make fun of each other about everything. I've considered making this the year that since we're playing late at night, I drink, and I just tell him,
Starting point is 00:05:10 hey, man, we got to do something about this. Should I do it or not? Drew? Oh, yeah, I can handle this one. I mean, if you're ever going to do it, if it's even crossing your mind to approach him, I think a couple beers into Broadway, some loud country music behind you, maybe writers are walking in the arena. That's the time to tell him? There's a lot of distractions, so it doesn't weigh on his mind.
Starting point is 00:05:32 If you told him just on the couch one night, he's going to be thinking about that for three days. But Nashville will be so busy, like so, maybe a few cocktails in the system. It'll just roll right off of him. No, it'll bother him as well. No, I think this would be the perfect time to do it. I mean, you could tell him subtly, you know, just give him like a tick-tack, maybe some gum, maybe a little mouthwash. But it sounds like this is a consistent problem. Yeah. I think you just straight up tell them.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I don't think you have to be drunk to say, hey, man, your breath stinks. The one thing about doing it on Broadway, though, is say if you're at a place like 10 room for the stage, just to have a conversation, you pretty much have to be shouting, which means that breath is going to be coming at you even harder when you bring this up if you do it in a bar. Ryan, you're telling them? You know, I think most people at one point in their life are going to have bad breath. But if the guy's having it like all the time, he's got some dental issues going on there. Isn't that all the more reason to tell him how you're trying to have?
Starting point is 00:06:21 Help him. Exactly. It's like if I look at you, Matt, and you've got something between your teeth, I'm going to tell you. I'm not going to let you walk around. But that's a little different than what Ryan's saying, because I could fix that in the moment. Ryan's right. This might be something that requires more. Go to the dentist, you know, get that fixed.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Maybe some underlying medical condition. Yeah, he may not even know it. He may not have an idea that it's bad all the time. I think there's like a range. I think you can say it to a complete stranger that you never see again. Yep. And then you can say it to somebody that's like your best friend in the world. It's the people in the middle that you can't say it to.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Do you say that makes sense? Maybe. But, I mean, for instance, if you told me that, Shannon, it might embarrass me in the moment, but I might be glad long-term you told. And I would want you to tell me. But if, like. So I can fix it. But if like Dwight Whitten told me.
Starting point is 00:07:17 He would be more likely to tell you. But I'd be like. Maybe a little offended. I'm like, we're not good enough friends for you to tell me that. Yeah. I know we're friendly. But guy like you, you interact with the people a lot. Oh, I smell bad breath all the time.
Starting point is 00:07:31 No, I would want to know. Yeah. But I smell people's bad breath all the time when they come up to me. You're like a dog, though. You smell everything. I do. But I don't sit there and go, hey, man, you have bad breath. I mean, I'm not going to do that to a stranger.
Starting point is 00:07:43 So I think it depends on how close you are with them. But yes, I will say this. I do think you would want to know. I dated someone a long time ago who said to me, hey, you might want, there's a little bit of bad breath sometimes. And then I realized I had a cavity. And that was what was causing it. And I was actually glad they told me. Now you're a better version of Matt.
Starting point is 00:08:02 That's exactly right. So I think if you're close enough to them, you can do it. There you go. Or if you're not, just straight up tell them bluntly and make them deal with it. Get a stranger to do it, Nashville. Michael Moreno, future Kentucky basketball player. Malachi. Excuse me.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Malachi Moreno. So future UK basketball player last night for Great Crossing, they make it to the finals or make it Sweet 16, win the regional finals. He has a triple double in front of a sold out crowd. Douglas, your team, played them very close, but they win. But a triple double for the future calf. That's pretty impressive. The dude has just come leaps and bounds that he was in middle school.
Starting point is 00:08:40 You know, he was kind of a deer on ice there when he was younger because he was just so big. He finally has grown into his body where now he can play. I tried to go to the game last night. You couldn't get in? Couldn't get in. They wouldn't even like, wait a woman, can't get into Douglas Great Crossing game.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Wait, if they wouldn't let you in a Douglas game? It was at Dunbar, and the parking lot right at Dunbar High School had filled up. They were forcing people to go down to the baseball field and park and then walk the distance to the basketball arena. Well, I pulled up to the, where the police officers were at Dunbar,
Starting point is 00:09:10 like, hey, any, any, any? Oh, wait, wait, whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa, whoa. This is a different story than you just. Just, huh. All right. Is it that they wouldn't let you go to the game, or they wouldn't let you get preferred parking?
Starting point is 00:09:26 Yeah, I ask you. He said, is there any parking here at all? He's like, no. And I said, is there any media parking? I thought I'd throw the media. Like, oh, yeah, this guy's with the media. We'll let him park in here. He's like, no.
Starting point is 00:09:35 And he said, plus, it's standing room only in there. Okay, so that's not what you said, though. You said they wouldn't let you in the game. You're just mad they wouldn't give you VIP parking. I just wanted to park, and I didn't want to go stand. Well, what did you park at the baseball field? That's a long walk for the baseball field. There we go.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I just wanted to say it. I just wanted to hear it. You're going to just besmirch the good people at Paul Longerick's number and say they wouldn't let you in the game. You just didn't want your pampered ass to have to walk like everybody else. I didn't want to walk, and I didn't want to stand once I got inside. So I went home. So other people were parking there and walking them. So basically you just told a lie.
Starting point is 00:10:12 You just said they, you couldn't get in the game. you couldn't get VIP treatment into the game. Well, I couldn't get into the parking lot. I wanted to park in. No, that was a one phrase. That I wanted to park in. You could get in a parking lot. Where others were.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Not the parking lot you wanted to park in. Listen to this guy. He's so boozy. I should have gone up, hey, I'm Matt Jones, Kentucky Sports Radio. I bet I got it got in then. See, people accuse me of all you don't get up at 7 a.m. This is the dude who won't. go to the game. He wants the red carpet rolled out for him, get the popcorn ready.
Starting point is 00:10:48 I would have walked with the people and enjoyed myself. You are at halftime. And left out. And left out. I would have left at halftime to beat the traffic. Who's up next? Adam. Adam. Adam. Go ahead, Adam. Hey, guys. Wanted your opinion on something. I'll give my opinion after I ask you all the question. Then let you all time in. Who would you most compare from the previous Kentucky teams? Who would you most compare this team to?
Starting point is 00:11:15 And my answer is the 93-94 Kentucky team. They had some Kentucky guys on the team. It was a very exciting team. Shot a lot of threes. They won Mali. They had the 31-point comeback. And even in the SEC tournament, which they won, you know, beat two teams that went to the final four, beat seven top 25 teams, but also had three losses to unranked teams.
Starting point is 00:11:39 I mean, is there a better argument for a different comparison? I mean, that's not a bad one. They lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament, I think, against Marquette. I have been comparing this Kentucky team to the team, the 991 Kentucky team, Rick's second team, which was not eligible for the NCAA tournament, but had, I think they won the SEC regular season, but they would win their games at home. They struggled on the road.
Starting point is 00:12:10 They shot the ball really well, although as the year went on, we didn't take as many threes. I kind of compared them to then. I think this is a team that even at 21 and 10, I don't think they have necessarily on paper the talent of a two or three seed, but I think they've played above themselves. So that's kind of where I see the team, but I could take the case for a 93-94 group.
Starting point is 00:12:35 I think those are both pretty good comparisons, really. I can't remember either Dave Baker or Cameron on their pre-game show. They also said the 991 team, even though they think maybe this team, have is a better shooting team than that team. Yeah, they took more threes that year, but it kind of reminds a lot of Kentucky kids on that team. They were a little bit older. You were kind of a year before a really good team in 91, 92. You know, it's tough. Like if you're trying to compare Cal teams, Cal never had teams like this. You know what I mean? Cal's teams all had a ton of like NBA talent,
Starting point is 00:13:06 so it's not. So really you have to go back, I think, to the early Rick years, Drew, to think, of a of a team that was kind of like this. Yeah, if you were doing, and Cal, the 2011 group that won the SEC tournament, lost a bunch of SEC road games, but just from the roster a lot different. This team doesn't have a Brandon Knight. I mean, Brandon Knight was kind of a special guy. This team doesn't have a dude just like that. It's hard to make the comparisons, too, because we talk about all the time with the SEC being
Starting point is 00:13:31 so good now. Some of these teams, and not to take away from them, if you go back and look at the brackets they had in the SEC tournament, they didn't even play a ranked team until some cases Sunday. Now we've got ranked teams playing today. That's a really good point. Yeah, I mean, that's another thing about, like, take the 2015 team. The 2015 team to me is as good a team as Kentucky's ever had.
Starting point is 00:13:52 They went 38 and 1. But the SEC was absolutely awful that year. So part of the reason they went 381 is they didn't play anybody. Now, would they have gone 381 in this league this year? No. Probably not. No, they would not. So, I mean, part of it, Ryan, is we're getting the hardest,
Starting point is 00:14:13 version of this league by far. I'll ask you guys this. I always feel like we would kind of almost even overachieved. I didn't think this group was this good. We see them at their best. This team's a much better team than I thought they were going to be. I think they've overachieved. I mean, I think they've taken more losses than how good they are.
Starting point is 00:14:32 But if you just look at their peak, if you look at this roster, they should not have been able to beat Duke, Tennessee, twice, Florida. they shouldn't have been able to win. This roster, and I've taken a lot of criticism for saying this, but I genuinely, there's not much talent on this roster. They are good college players, but there's nobody great on this roster. Our only all-SCC player is OTAGA O'A,
Starting point is 00:15:00 who is a six-man in Oklahoma? I mean, Pope has overachieved. I genuinely, do you agree with that? Well, they each have a skill set they're very good at, but none of them all around are just, you know, amazing basketball players. Very good. And like, Kobe's amazing at shooting threes, but weak in other areas.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Pope just managed to get a little bit of everything and put it together and make it work. I mean, one of the ways to look at this is how many of these guys would Cal have put in the game last year? Maybe Brandon Garrison might be the only one. Well, I think if you just had given, let's say Cal had his roster last year. And then he had these guys. And he got to play whoever he wanted. I think Amari would have played some.
Starting point is 00:15:46 I don't even know if he would have put Otega in. Lamont Butler wasn't getting in with DJ Wagner. I don't. Andrew Carr wouldn't have played. He might have played Amari because he did like guys who could play athletic and protect the rim. I could use some of Mario. He would not have played Kobe Brea.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Yeah. No. Would never. If Kobe missed one three, he could have just gone to his car. Perry, Noah, Allmanor, never even contemplating get it off the bench. So I'm just saying like this team, I think this is a compliment to Pope. I think he's overachieved with him, Shannon. Yeah, I mean, like we said, putting the team together the way that he did and they've got, I believe, 12 quad one wins,
Starting point is 00:16:24 which is better than any other team in college basketball. You consider all those? I think if you're, I think if you're honest, Pope would have played Amari and maybe Jackson Robbins. And that's probably it. We didn't even call Trent, no. And remember Antonio Reeves, who's a lot like Jackson Robinson, but maybe better, he didn't play him for half a year. You know? Antonio Reeves kind of made him play.
Starting point is 00:16:50 Yeah, he had to. Braya would have been Jamal Baker. He hits a shot. He gets to stay on the floor. He would have never gotten him because of his defense. Braya would have never played him at any point. Don't miss your chance to win big while supporting a great cause with Commonwealth causes exciting raffles. So the Queen of Hearts Raffle, and then there's a bourbon raffle on the last Thursday of each month. It is commonwealthcauses.org. I don't know you played. Well, I think I want to contribute somehow and I thought, I'm going to play this Queen of Hart's game. I actually don't think we're allowed to play because we do the ads.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Oh, well, never mind then. It's the thing you haven't been winning. You get to give that money back if you did win. I mean, you can keep playing if you won. But I hate going to get the money. That's exactly right. We'll take a break. Be right back to KSR.

I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase, that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
Starting point is 00:19:14 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing. growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Starting point is 00:19:58 So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting. the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant, this went to a billion dollar fraud.
Starting point is 00:20:22 But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:20:54 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:21:19 We're back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live. It is time for our Draft Kings' SEC tournament picks for day one. You go to Draft Kings, make your bets. Use my promo code KSR for $150 in bonus bets from Draft Kings. Let's go. I'm going to give you the spreads. You've got to pick against the spread.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Okay. Arkansas is a four and a half point. favorite against South Carolina. Don't give me just who wins, spread. South Carolina. You got South Carolina cover? I cover because I think they're going to win. Wow.
Starting point is 00:21:52 You think they're going to win? Yes. Wow. I'm going to take Cal and Arkansas. They lost by 22 them before, which I called. So I think they get them back this time. I'll take Arkansas and I think they cover. Yeah, I'll take the hogs in this one too.
Starting point is 00:22:04 I don't know that they have a lot in them, but I'll think they'll at least get out of this round. Yeah, Cala Perry doesn't care about the tournament, but he's going to win at least one game. So give me Arkansas and the first. You're on your own there on that one. Well, do you still not playing. I understand.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Okay. Texas is against Vandy. Vandy's a two and a half point favorite chance. Yep. I think they cover. I'm not saying that confidently because Vanderbilt is really bad in the second half. I'm going to say they cover the two and a half. Texas is covering the two and a half and winning.
Starting point is 00:22:35 I have them beating Vandy in Nashville. This is the toughest one of the day. Seth Greenberg says this is a bubble game, not necessarily for Vandy, but to keep Vandy out of the play-in game or whatever, and for Texas a bubble game, I'm going to take Vandy, and I'm going to take them to cover, although this could go either way. Vandy will have a little bit of a crowd, too, which I think helps. I want to just be sitting by Shannon during this game because I'll pick in Vandy
Starting point is 00:23:00 and watch him get excited. LSU is that against Mississippi State. Mississippi State is a eight-and-a-half-point favorite. Wow. You know what? Give me LSU and the points on that one. All right. I think I'm leaning the same.
Starting point is 00:23:14 I think Mississippi State a win, but I think LSU covers. Even though it feels like too many points, the LSU team I saw in Lexington looked ready for spring break, I think they might be ready to shut it down. I think they get killed. Blown out in Lexington, blown out home in the second half against A&M, even though they started well, they've quit. I'm taking Mississippi State to cover. And then finally, Oklahoma and Georgia, the nightcap.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Georgia's a three and a half point favorite. Let me go first. Oklahoma's winning this game. get you tell me they're getting three and a half they're winning it. I'm taking the Sooners. Yeah, I think this will be a close game could go either way. So if I can get three and a half points, I'll take them, take Oklahoma. All right, I guess I'll take Georgia.
Starting point is 00:23:53 You're going to flip against this, right? I think Georgia's very good defensively. I think they win this one and the points. Yeah, with you guys, I think Oklahoma wins it. Even though Georgia may be the favorite, I think Oklahoma gets this one. Yeah, so some good games. I think the Texas Vandy and Oklahoma Georgia game have big NCAA tournament implications, both the late games and both.
Starting point is 00:24:11 sessions. Who's up next? Hunter. Hunter. How are you, Hunter? Good. You? Good. What's going on? So my dad called to Mark Pope's jersey last week and posted on Facebook. And one of his assistants attended on Facebook and invited us to their practice last week. And we got to meet the team and meet Pope. And I just want to say that Pope and his wife are two of the nicest people I've ever met. So wait a Go back to the story. So when you say your dad carved a Mark Pope jersey like in wood? Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:24:50 He carved wood flags and jerseys. And he does it as a side job. It's under miles of carvings on Facebook if you want to check it out. Well, do me a favor. I'd like to see the picture. Are you on Twitter? Yes, sir. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Send me, if you would, when we get off the phone at KY Sports Radio. Tag me and send the picture. I'd like to retweet. I have not seen it. I see the TikTok, but just the picture of it. And so you got then invited to Pope's assistant saw it, and you got invited to a UK practice. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:25:28 Yeah, it was a crazy experience. And we got to talk to Pope and his wife for about an hour. And then the team signed the ball. And half of them were in the locker room. He took us back in the locker room and introduced us to all the players and got them to sign the rest of the ball. It was just an all-around crazy experience. That's a great. That's a really cool thing.
Starting point is 00:25:51 So where are you from, sir? I'm from Bartsown. So from Bardstown, you just, your dad, carves a Mark Pope Jersey for fun, and next thing you know, you end up in the UK locker room. That had to be awesome. Well, thank you for sharing the story and make sure you send me that picture, okay? right well do appreciate it that's a cool story isn't it very cool i saw the photo it's really cool and i can see why pope and his wife would really enjoy that i mean did you see the photo i saw it posted somewhere floating floating around okay yeah look at you
Starting point is 00:26:23 mr social media well you know yeah i got to do my show prep yep pope does seem to give access to fans that just seem to be off limits in years past i mean we also had a caller on the pre-show that said their little kid was allowed to go out and and dunk on the goal they lowered the goals down so the kid could go out and dunk after a game. See, I think that's great. I mean, you know, it's hard because you can't do that kind of stuff for everybody, right? Yeah. But the fact that he, you know, like that guy carved that without expecting to end up at
Starting point is 00:26:53 UK practice. So then the fact that he gets to do it, that's a really neat thing, Drew, to be honest. Oh, yeah, they've been good about that. I mean, they can't fulfill every request, especially this time of year. But I've seen people who after a UK game, they've told me like, hey, Pope told me to wait right here because I have this. that I wanted to show him. And he makes a point after his radio show to go find him.
Starting point is 00:27:11 I don't know. Maybe he takes him in the back. But he's done a lot of things like these will probably never know about. Yeah, that's very, very cool. Who's up next? Bill. Bill, 859-280-2287. Go ahead, Bill.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Hey, as a dentist, I have a suggestion about this breath thing. Okay. I would say to somebody is. Matt, you know, as your friend, there's something I would tell. I wish you would tell me if it was the shoe was on the other foot. Do you want to hear it? First of all, I'm asking permission. Second thing I'm saying, well, first of all, why did you have to act like you were talking to me?
Starting point is 00:27:49 Like, I mean, this was supposed to be a theoretical conversation. You didn't have to sit it in my direction. But actually, that's a good idea. Sir, you say, I have something I think you'd want to hear. Would you like me to say it? That's a good intro. Okay. Then the second thing is you say, when you exhale,
Starting point is 00:28:06 you have something unhealthy going on. Now that's not what I'm saying is bad breath. I like that. Oh, that's interesting. So it's less threatening to a person. And it speaks to the issue, which is there's something healthy going on here. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:28:27 I like that. I appreciate the call. That's a really good, you like that? When you exhale. Rather than you have bad breath, when you exhale, you have something. negative going on. That's one way to put it, I guess.
Starting point is 00:28:41 I would reply to you're telling me I have bad breath. But you said it a nicer way. Could you elaborate more? What do you think, right? Is that good? It's better to say when you exhale, your breast smells like a fart. Would be better than that. We'll take a break. Very bad as case are.
Starting point is 00:28:57 There's a Willie Nelson song for everything, Shamed. That's right. What is it? Bad breath is better than no breath at all. That's true. Willie Nelson, I don't. be interested to see how many songs he's written i think somebody i think we were talking about this one time somebody said it was like 97 albums or something that is i could be wrong about that but it was
Starting point is 00:29:14 something like that it was something like that he he's done and he just keeps putting them out like they just he just constantly putting out albums i can't believe the man still alive i thought he was you know knocking on heaven's door 30 years ago one one thousand two hundred and 66 songs the court yes the 4,000. So that would be about 100 albums, yeah. Wow. That's unbelievable. And that's just the ones on Spotify.
Starting point is 00:29:42 There might be ones before that. That's right, yeah. All right. So the new bracketology, I think we would all take. Okay, let's hear it. I haven't seen it yet. Well, if I gave you this route to the elite eight, playing in Denver, that's not great.
Starting point is 00:29:56 But let's just say, first Utah Valley. Taking it. Taking it. Then the winner of St. Mary's VCU. Taking it. St. Mary's can't knock down a shot. Then the winner of Texas Tech, Old Miss. Taking it.
Starting point is 00:30:09 And then you're in the Elite 8. Wow. You couldn't ask for a better path than that. I mean, I'm not saying you would definitely win. And then Florida would be who you'd be waiting for in the regional. But like you could not, you could not, Drew, pray for a better thing than to beat Utah Valley, St. Mary's and Texas Tech to go to the elite eight. Yep. Pope's old school right away.
Starting point is 00:30:29 It's a small storyline, but shouldn't affect things too much. Then, I mean, get a little of revenge game on Ole Day. if you wanted. I'd like that set up a lot. I'm not going to get into this right now. 859-2-80-2-87. We're probably going to save it for if we lost. Maybe when the tournament's over, but we had an amazing conversation,
Starting point is 00:30:47 Drew it I did on the way here with Mario about movies. I said to Mario, I was like, Mario, do you like movies? And he was like, I mean, not really. And I said, well, what's the last movie you watched? And he just then proceeded to give a list of the worst movies I've ever seen. Like his favorite movies, literally, like the first thing he said was Big Mama's House.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Like Big Mama's House. And then he, and then it was Juana Man and white chicks. Like Mike is his favorite. Like every movie. He's like that Cat Williams skit. Every movie is a dude dressed up as a woman, like every single one of them. So then I said, have you ever seen any movies like that star white people? And he goes, no.
Starting point is 00:31:34 And I started naming some. And then I went through actors, and he said he saw Top Gunn last year. So there's one. But then my favorite is I named movie after movie, famous one, like Godfather, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction. No, no, no, no, right? Yeah. And then I say, and then Drew goes, Titanic, and he goes, oh, that was fire. Titanic was fire.
Starting point is 00:32:02 So we've decided a summer thing is we're going to have him watch. Movie reviews with Mario. Some famous movies just to get his take on famous movies because he hasn't seen any of. Mario at the movies. He didn't see any movies at all. I thought we had something because I loved Jim Carrey growing up. He goes, well, I like Jim Carrey. So I'm thinking all the classics, but no, he liked him in the Grinch.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Yes. Which is still good, but not the top of like Jim Carrey list. Never seen Ace Ventura, the Mask, you know, Truman Show. Liar, Liar, Liar, Dumb and Dumb and. The only one he had seen is the Grinch. The Grinch. Mario's got a lot of movies to watch. There's so much out there, Mario.
Starting point is 00:32:40 He just got done with the Medea collection. It's like 30 movies. So I asked him, what do you watch? And his answer was Gilbert Arenas' podcast. That's what you watch? That's the one thing he said he watches is Gilbert Arinas' podcast. Well, you're rattling off all those movies. I was watching my son sitting over there, Josiah.
Starting point is 00:32:59 He hadn't seen any of them. Except Titanic, he definitely has seen some. Titanic Spire, right? He's seeing this at Joseph. Joseph, I agree. Titanic's Fire. So that's going to be a summer thing. I love it.
Starting point is 00:33:11 We're going to have Mario actually watch some of these movies so that he... They can come on and give us a movie review the next day. Yeah. I mean, movie theaters aren't doing great. Give us a matinee. We'll fill it with an old movie and Mario. Oh, you know, if a movie theater wanted to, Mario's matinee. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Yeah. Go to the classics, then he could give a short one-minute review. To be honest with you, you'd probably sell out of a movie. movie theater if we did that. I think Mario could single-handedly bring back movie theaters. We buy AMC stock again. Mario could make our AMC stock go right back through the room. Did you go watch Queen of the Ring? Not yet.
Starting point is 00:33:43 Okay. Have you seen it? I have. Did you see yourself in it? You have to know where to look. So you could very easily watch the entire movie and never see me. But if I was pointed out like, hey, there I am. Then I can see it? Then you can see me.
Starting point is 00:33:56 I want to see. Because there's a lot of OVW. Could you see the other OVW people in? Oh, yeah, yeah. There's a lot of VW people in the movie. One guy had like a very big role early on in the movie. Who? Big Whiskey, Jared Kripke. Oh, Big Whiskey has a big role. Who was the first?
Starting point is 00:34:11 Well, I don't want to ruin the movie, but he got into the ring with Mildred, Burke, and taught her how to wrestle. Big Whiskey. Yeah. Good for Big Whiskey. I like that. Yeah. I have a great big whiskey story, but I can't tell it on the radio. Who's up next?
Starting point is 00:34:24 He looks so scrawny. Richard. Rich, go ahead, Richard. Hi, guys. Just a real quick point. While the extreme supertals Mark Pope has been spitting out all year, have been a little bit irritating. Everything is extremely awesome and amazing.
Starting point is 00:34:40 That may be part of the reason this team excelled so much and overachieved because I think if he coached him negatively like Cal did and screamed and hollered at them, I think this team would have lost their confidence. Oh, so you're saying, I'm sorry, I didn't really understand what you were saying. You're saying that, not that fans saying it was positive as bad, You're saying, like, his overt positivityism in coaching, you find a little irritating, just is that because it, like, so happy? Well, yeah, mainly just in interviews and post-game confidence.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Every coach is amazingly awesome, and this guy is extremely unforgettable. But I think that attitude helps his team, because if he screams and yells and cusses at him after every mistake or every game, I think this team loses its confidence. It is interesting. I appreciate the call. Pope's coaching style. I mean, you know, Cal was sometimes negative, sometimes positive. I wouldn't say he was like a terrible disciplinarian.
Starting point is 00:35:35 But Pope clearly his thing is relentless positivity. He's told you up. He's like Ted Lassow. I mean, he really is. We've called him that. But he is kind of like Ted Lassow. And it seems to have worked. I mean, you know, there's a little part of that that some people might find cheesy.
Starting point is 00:35:54 But I don't think it has been cheesy with his players who seem to really love him, right? And I think he picks guys with that in mind. You know, so many coaches try to break you down before they build you up, I think his philosophy, and I think he, when he went in the transfer portal, looking for guys that he can work that style with. It is probably important for him to find guys, Drew, who, from a personality perspective, fit his, you know,
Starting point is 00:36:19 you can't have the dude that's rolling. Like, I don't know if he could coach DeMarcus Cudders, right? I don't know if DeMarcus Cous cousins would really, work with that. I think he's got to find guys who are good with that style. Yeah, and there's something to, you know, some guys with Cal or whoever that's more of that
Starting point is 00:36:36 loud type, you're constantly looking over your shoulder at the bench in a game, just wondering if you're in trouble or going to get yelled at, but they have a confidence knowing that no matter what, Pope's going to be sitting there, and I promise you, whatever you ask him, he's going to be saying it's super special, or it's awesome or it's great to see. He's Ted Lassow. If you've ever seen that show,
Starting point is 00:36:52 he is Ted Lassow. And Ted Lassow at the beginning, the players are like, eh, but then at the end they're like I'll do anything for this. Everything is big and beautiful. He even wanted fans to give a big, beautiful nickname for Nashville, sent down from heaven. That was his quote. It's a beautiful thing, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:37:07 It's a beautiful. He probably says the word beautiful more than any male basketball coach I've ever seen. We ought to do that. We ought to count the beautifuls at the SEC tournament. Take a shot. He does say beautiful a lot. It's super awesome how often he says it. I really think it's special that he says it.
Starting point is 00:37:24 And the other players are always amazing. He's amazing ball handler. So what are the words we're going to listen for in his first interview? Awesome. Beautiful. And special. Those are the big three. Amazing and special.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Those are the four. But a lot of them start with super. It's super beautiful or super awesome, super special. He talked about Dennis Gates before the Missouri game, just a super coach. Beautiful for the game. Very awesome. Looking forward to playing. So we're going to have awesome, beautiful, special, amazing.
Starting point is 00:37:52 And then double points, a double shot if it's. Super. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Super beautiful. Got it. So when we're at Ten Roof for the post game show or whatever, that's what you got to do.

Starting point is 00:42:46 Yes. First of all, he calls Rupp Arena the Cathedral and says, it's just beautiful. I love everything about it. And then he goes, I'm calling on BBN. I need the exact right, beautiful heaven-sent Kentucky ownership name for Nashville. He wants a nickname, a beautiful heaven-sent nickname for Nashville. Now, if you had asked me who said that, I might have guessed Trump, because he says the word. He does a lot, too.
Starting point is 00:43:11 While he's playing the accordion. While he does that. Okay, we actually had a conversation during the break, which is not about the SEC tournament, but would be good for suggestions on the text machine. 772-7-4-7-4. Somebody suggested Mario needs to watch Schindler's list. And I said, No.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Well, first of all, it's really good. It is good. But it's not the most uplifting. I don't want to be the first recommendation. Exactly. So I said, what are some movies that are objectively great, but that you would never want to watch again? You're glad you watched them.
Starting point is 00:43:44 And Schindler's list at the top of the list for me. Like, that's objectively a great movie, but I don't know what the situation would be that I would ever sit down and watch it again. Somebody said six cents. That's a good one. Once you know the ending, who cares? Why would you watch it again?
Starting point is 00:43:58 Can you think of any other movies that you really liked that you would not watch again? You said saving Private Ryan, which I think's a terrible answer, because I would love to watch the first hour of saving Private Ryan again. Like, that's an amazing scene, and you said it made you nervous
Starting point is 00:44:12 because you thought you were going to get killed. That's what I don't want to watch that opening. Did you have gummies before you watched it? I thought you were in the movie? I mean, World War II, is over. Yeah. It made me real anxious watching that.
Starting point is 00:44:24 Those kind of movies do. Do you think of any other movie that you really liked, but you're like, ah, I will never watch that again. I like the direction with six cents. Something that has a big twist at the end, but I'm struggling to come up with like a Oh, Gone Girl. Gone Girl, yeah. Yeah, it's got a big twist.
Starting point is 00:44:38 So you wouldn't want to watch Gone Girl again? See, I would have said like seven, but I would still watch that again. What's in the box? Yeah, I would, I think I would say that again. Any kind of like horror movie where you know the jump scares and you know the ending, you know the twist, there's no point in really going back and watching it. That's true. I'm trying to think of what one is like that.
Starting point is 00:44:58 I remember thinking Blair Witch Project was really good, but I wouldn't want to go through it again because it may be dizzy and all that, you know. Don't they ever watch that one again. Yeah. So if you have one on the text machine, you could let us know. Ryan, I have a feeling like you only watch the same three movies over and over and over again. Shawshank Redemption. I've seen it a million times probably. Barnyard.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Housers. Which has got a resurgence with the death of Gene Hackman. It's been on again a lot lately. Yeah. Oh, really? Yeah. Who's up next? JP.
Starting point is 00:45:28 JP. How are you, JP? Good. First time, long time. Who are? What's up? Oh, I'm a student at Logan County Hospital. I'm skipping class to call on the show.
Starting point is 00:45:39 I'm a big fan. Good. I'm a big fan of skipping class to call in the show. That's what kids need to do. Go ahead. What could you can't do? to keep Kerr Teresa next year because I think he can be an absolute dog on the court and he's pretty good. You know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:45:55 I appreciate the call. I think to keep Kirkresa, he'd probably have to think he'd start. And I don't think Mark Pope is going to have him as the starting point guard. So, Drew, I just, I don't really know that there's anything UK can do. It just is like, does Kerr Kreeza want to come and be the backup or not? It's up to him. Yeah, I mean, I wish we had Kerr this year for his intensity and kind of to be, little contrasting style to Butler, but looking at next year's roster, I just don't know where you put him.
Starting point is 00:46:22 I think both freshman guards will come off the bench, and then I think he's got to go out and get a star at point guard. And Kerr, going in his sixth year who can make pretty good NIL money, he's probably going to want a spot where he knows he's going to play a lot and start. So I just, I think it's a numbers game, and I don't know that it adds up in his favorite. And if Colin Chandler comes back, I think it makes it even less likely. Yeah, I didn't mention Travis Perry coming back. I mean, I think it would make it less likely. Yeah, don't you think?
Starting point is 00:46:47 There's a lot of teams that can probably offer Kerr, the starting job, and a lot of money. Yes, a lot of them. He wants to go start somewhere he can do it. I just don't think he can be here, and that there is the problem. He was a multi-year starter before Kentucky. It was actually pretty cool that Pope got two starting point guards to come here and kind of battle it out and play different styles. It just ended up he got hurt and getting into play. All depends on how much playing for Kentucky means to him, you know?
Starting point is 00:47:10 Yeah. Does it mean? Money doesn't necessarily mean as much as $800,000 probably. Clayton and Croom's trip to the SEC tournament, Clayton and Croom, C-R-U-M-E.com. Get $100 worth of material, not material, products. You get $25 off. And remember, this is in honor of their friend
Starting point is 00:47:32 who Parker. Parker, I know Parker a little bit. And who does work there and is battling cancer. Thank you to them for honoring their friend like that. Who's next? Po. Poe, how are you, Poe? misery.
Starting point is 00:47:46 Would you watch misery again? No. Yeah, I wouldn't either. That's kind of a torture to get with. Go ahead. I just want to say good day to you guys and happy and fun and safe selling to you guys on your journey. Well, thank you. And, yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:48:05 And are we close? I know you won't know to selection Sunday, but are we close to playing the most teams that's going to make a tournament in a regular season. Well, I mean, yeah, Auburn's probably right there with us. I mean, we have the second most wins against teams, you know,
Starting point is 00:48:26 that are in the quad one, but Auburn has the first by like four. So it's probably us in Auburn at the top of that. I meant for the school record, actually. Oh, I don't know. Maybe, maybe for the school record.
Starting point is 00:48:40 Yeah, we'll see. And the other question, or, yeah, a question I kind of had is do you think Mark Pope might be too nice to win and not too intense? No, I don't. I don't think he's too nice. I mean, again, we talked about this the other day. There's a lot of different ways to do it.
Starting point is 00:49:01 You know, Brad Stevens took a team named Butler to back-to-back championship games and never spoke. Yep. It seemed like the nicest dude in the world. And then you got maniacs like Bobby Knight who won national titles. So I think, Ryan, there's a lot of. of different ways to skin a cat, which is a really weird saying. And I don't know why people say it. It seems like skinning a cat is why.
Starting point is 00:49:24 And how many different ways could there even be? I don't know. Why are you skinning a cat? Yeah. Yeah. Weird saying. But anyway, I think the point of it. The way is to coach the cats.
Starting point is 00:49:31 Yeah, I do think there's a lot of different ways to coach. There are. And he has found his niche and it's worked. He's had success everywhere he's been. He's going to have more success here. I would say I ask that locker room furniture if he's a nice guy because it probably doesn't think he's too nice. He destroyed everything.
Starting point is 00:49:45 thing in the locker room. Well, I mean, the dude at Missouri also kind of reminds me of Butler, of Brad Stevens. Like, he doesn't speak either, and they've had a great year. So John Shire, does John Shire barely says a word? And they seem to do well. So, you know. Shannon nailed it for me. I might have concerns about Pope being too nice if we haven't heard a few stories about him losing
Starting point is 00:50:05 it a bit. So he just, he said it many times. He knows when to be white hot. Yeah, I mean, if you look at what I think are outside of Kentucky, the three best coaches in the SEC. Bruce Pearl goes crazy. Nate Oates goes crazy. Rick Barnes seems pretty normal, right?
Starting point is 00:50:21 Todd Golden seems pretty normal. You know, so I think it can be, well, pretty normal on the court. But I think you can be a lot of different things depending on how you do it. Who's next? Carter. Carter, I got like 30 seconds. Go ahead. Hey, first time, long time.
Starting point is 00:50:38 Just have a recommendation for Mario. It's about the movies. There's an app he needs to check out called Letterbox. It allows you to review and rate movies and you go on there and see what the high Highly rated movies. I like it. You'd see great reviews for white chicks and Juana Man. Appreciate it, sir.
Starting point is 00:51:01 All right, so we're heading to Nashville. Here we go. We're going to be at the games. Here's the schedule. Tomorrow, 10 roof. Get there early. Come in and join us. It should be a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:51:10 It'll be parties all day. Shannon plays at 3.30 Central. 430 Central. with Alice Bluegown at Ten Roof as well. Pre-game show will be that night. Should be an amazing day. Watch us walking on the street. Mario and I are going to go do videos throughout the day.
