Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing, and honestly, just kind of lonely. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the psychology of your 20s is breaking down the science behind the biggest roadblocks we face. I was six years into my career, the 80-hour weeks and just the first one in, the last one out, and I ended up burning out. There was a large chunk of my 20s that I, like, was just so wanting to, like, be out of that phase out of my skin. And I just, like, really regret not living in the present more.
Starting point is 00:01:36 You don't need to have everything figured out right now. You just need to understand yourself a little bit better. Listen to the psychology of your 20s on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:01:58 This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rep, my mama wants you to wave at her. What? Where's she at?
Starting point is 00:02:18 Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Drew and Shannon. Matt is off in Amsterdam.
Starting point is 00:03:41 He just tweeted a picture about 30 minutes ago of like a scene. A scene? No tulips. No tulips. Just a lot of water and buildings. Okay. But he has made it to Amsterdam and he's there, which, by the way, they had a car bombing yesterday in the middle of the city.
Starting point is 00:03:58 So I don't think it injured anybody, but got to be careful out there. So look, few players, high school players in the state of Kentucky have done what this guy has done. That is when Mr. Basketball win a state championship, MVP of the state championship game, and you're going to Kentucky. The only ones I could think of were Darius Miller. I believe he pulled it off. And maybe, maybe. Travis Barry? Travis Perry.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Look at that. He would be another one. Back to back. Teammate. Future teammates. So we want to get him on and talk to him back because he had a heck of a week. He just finished playing the McDonald's All-American game. Got to be exhausted.
Starting point is 00:04:41 He was here this summer. Did a show with this summer with him and he's brother Michael. So Malachi Marino joining us. Malachi, I think this is your spring break. Aren't you supposed to be on the beat somewhere? You know, I didn't have any time to travel. I was playing basketball. Well, first of all, congratulations.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Let's just kind of go in order. Mr. Basketball. that was the announced first. You know, it's a dream of every Kentucky kid when you're shooting ball in your driveway to someday name Mr. Basketball. You got that. How'd that make you feel?
Starting point is 00:05:12 It was a privilege and an honor just to kind of be in that kind of name with the history it's had. You know, it's always the best player in the state of Kentucky that wins it. And once I heard my name called, it was truly a blessing. You and your great,
Starting point is 00:05:30 crossing teammates just lifted the trophy in Rupp Arena last week. But the year before, you were knocking on the door, made it through the semis, got knocked out. How much did the, getting so close as a junior, did that motivate you in your senior season? And what was it like finally getting the job done in your last year with your high school friends and teammates at Great Crossing? It definitely motivated us just because we were juniors and we were right there. Like we had it in our hands. And unfortunately, we got knocked off. So we came back. It was our senior year. It was our last year. So we knew we wanted to go out with a bang.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And, I mean, I don't think there's no bigger bang than becoming a state champion in the state of Kentucky. Are you and Travis just going to be wearing your rings around the UK facility, showing them off, shining them off in front of everybody when you get to campus? Oh, 100%. Now, I let everybody know I'm a state champion, you know. I think it's pretty cool. Your core group of guys, L.J., Gage, Vince, and you, you guys have been starting since you were like sophomores, played some as even as freshman.
Starting point is 00:06:31 That's kind of cool when you got a group of guys together like that that you have been on this journey to end with the state championship. Yeah, I mean, we've all kind of grown up together. You know, me, Gage, and Vince, we had, we played travel ball together for so long. And then, you know, we made the decision to go to high school together. Then we brought LJ into the mix. And I think just us playing with each other so much, it kind of felt like second nature. like nothing really changed and we knew how each other played we knew how each other functioned and it just made playing together so much easier it was impressive from you to go from rup in the sweet
Starting point is 00:07:07 16 to the McDonald's all-American game a few days later then on short rest you have a great game on the national stage against some of the best players in your class what was just that timeline like of getting there getting acclimated with everybody and then having that big game that seemed like a whirlwind few days for you yeah So, you know, we had the two games for the state semifinals or the finals on it Saturday. And then we had our police escort back to the school, a little hoopla at the school kind of thing just to celebrate our win. And then I had to go home and immediately start packing because I flew out at 6 a.m. the next morning. Golly.
Starting point is 00:07:49 But I was able, you know, I was able to talk with the staff at McDonald's and they gave me the opportunity to stay at home and win a state change. championship because you know I'm always team over myself so I wanted to win that state championship before I went to New York and they allowed me to do that so it was truly uh I was extremely grateful there are some stories written while you're up there that you might have been talking to more than coaches maybe another McDonald's All-American you might have done a little recruiting for Kentucky there did you and Nate have any conversations you can tell us about yeah we definitely had a couple conversations but I mean at the end of the day it's his decision it's about where he wants to find the best fit for himself
Starting point is 00:08:27 and hopefully it's in the big blue. What do you like about what Pope did this year and how do you see yourself fitting in next year when you put on that Kentucky uniform in? I would definitely say just the system he has. I mean, coming into the job, a lot of people were very doubtful, but he came in, he was ready to work from day one, and, I mean, the season kind of speaks for itself.
Starting point is 00:08:50 They were right top 10 for a really long time. I mean, injury-riddled and still producing the same. I think that really shows the type of coach he is. And that makes me really excited just because he's a coach that never gives up, and he's always fighting to the end. And that's something I always play for because I play to win. And, I mean, he's going to be a great coach to play for. He's still building his roster, but has he given you any indication of how he wants to use you
Starting point is 00:09:20 or maybe anything he had you working on in particular during your senior season? to be ready for Kentucky or just any kind of thing that Pope has kind of steered you in a direction of how he wants you to play as a freshman kind of just to play with confidence you know the way amari williams played he puts a lot of trust in his five man and he told me he has a lot of trust in me he decided for me to get on campus and just to play with confidence and just to play for the name on the front you know prosper for the name on the back you mentioned amari uh did did you try any of the Wheatabix. I know it really helped Amari get to, you know, maximize his potential. Did you get in on the Wheatabix craze with all a big Blue Nation during the tournament?
Starting point is 00:10:00 I do indeed need to try Weidabix. I got to find it somewhere in the store, but I'm going to try it. I heard it's really good, so. It will sold out right now, but we'll find you some. Yeah, you can't find him in Kentucky now. I'm going to have to go somewhere, fine, so. You know, I've seen you play since your middle school days when you're playing against my son and middle school ball and summer ball and stuff. I've been so impressed with your development as a player.
Starting point is 00:10:28 What do you attribute that to? As a matter of fact, the best two games I think I've ever seen you play were the semifinal game and the final state finals. I mean, you were a man-child out there in those two games. I kind of distributed to everyone that's helped me along the process. I mean, in the summer, I could have went to a prep school. I could have left Kentucky, but I decided to stay home because everyone around me
Starting point is 00:10:51 had always pushed me to be better. They had always helped me get better. And, I mean, there's no reason to leave that because, I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So I had no reason to go, and they pushed me to be better, and it really helped me. And I'm truly blessed with the people I have around me. I saw you at several Kentucky home games throughout the season.
Starting point is 00:11:13 I mean, you might not have missed one. You were a fixture in Rupp Arena. Did you ever have the urge to just go sit over at the bench and how excited are you to finally, I guess Big Blue Madness, will be your big Rupp Arena debut as a Wildcab. Are you excited to finally be a part of the team after watching so many games up close? Yes, because just like being in Roperina
Starting point is 00:11:30 and just feeling the energy that comes from the crowd, I mean, you can feel so much of it as a fan watching the game, but I feel like it's even better when you're on the court playing and you hear all those people who say to go big blue. Well, listen, man, we were really proud of you. Congratulations on all your accolades. Mr. Basketball, State Champion, McDonald's All-American. I mean, that's a kid's dream, man.
Starting point is 00:11:52 It does it all. It does it all. So very excited for you to start your career at Kentucky. We appreciate you spending some time with us here during your spring break. You still got a couple days left. You've got to go back to school on Monday, so enjoy a couple days, Malachi. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Malachi Marino, the next big superstar coming to Kentucky. I mean, dude, he's living the dream right now. Yeah, not that there were any questions about him, but him going to the McDonald's American game, just two days later and playing as well as he did against the top players in his class. That just added to the excitement of him coming to Kentucky and being a part of that freshman group with another home state guy in Jasper Johnson and then Akaden Lewis. Very exciting.
Starting point is 00:12:33 You know, we don't know a lot about the roster in these weird times of portal season, but I think we're not giving those three enough credit as we're looking at these guys from all these other schools and trying to figure out who they are. So I forget, Pope's got three very good commitments already. And I think those three guys are going to play. Those three guys are definitely going to be on the floor a lot and play. Yeah, Big Blue Nation, we're pulling our hair out, you know, looking at the portal, and is this guy the one, this one's going here, where's Pope?
Starting point is 00:12:57 But there's three guys that are ready to go right away. I think Malachi made a big statement at the McDonald's American name to prove that. Any portal news we need to hit on before we move on? Yeah, there's lots of new names. I'm still intrigued by Pierre, who I called Jason yesterday, but there's the pit guard, Jalen Lowe. He's in the mix. A new name emerged today.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I'm trying to pull it up. Jacob posted it right as the show started. Don't want to get it wrong. Zavian Lee, the Princeton point guard. I'd freely admit I'd never heard of this guy. I told Jacob post the story. But, I mean, we all just look at numbers. If anyone out there has really watched all of these kids
Starting point is 00:13:36 and really has a good scouting report, I'll listen to you. But we're just going by stats at this point. Is this a 6-3 point guard, average 17.6 rebounds and 5.5 assists. having not seen any tape on him yet, that sounds pretty good. He's another one that's popped on the radar. But we've told Big Blue Nation to take a deep breath, and Pope will get it figured out. But we are getting pretty antsy to get one of these
Starting point is 00:13:56 because it's just name popping up, name popping up, name popping up, name popping up. And it's moving quickly. Guys are committing to places, and Kentucky needs to start getting some. Because Demery, the kid from Georgia picked Yukon. Yeah. So that's another guy Kentucky was in on. But any time you see a point guard enter the portal, a good point guard, you've got to know Kentucky's going to make contact.
Starting point is 00:14:12 Yeah, and Yaxil. I think we all still want Yaxil, the UAB forward. I mean, he's the number one ranked on a lot of the portal rankings. But, you know, I'm still trusting Pope and giving them patience. But I'll admit I'm a little antsy, too. It's time to start locking some down. If we're being honest, Louisville has done a great job so far. Louisville's loaded up.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Louisville might have the best back court in the country next season, which is hard to say out of that. I said this on Twitter. Maybe they'll win a tournament game. Their fans got so sensitive. Just a simple tweet. I said they're going to have a great back court, might win a tournament game. and my Twitter's just been nonstop Blah Blah Blah Troy
Starting point is 00:14:46 Oakland blah blah They're the softest bunch of fans ever But I will tip the cap to Pat and his Pat Signal They've gotten some big commitments The Pat Signal He's doing well So Pope needs to get it in gear
Starting point is 00:14:57 Shannon I don't if you know this or not But I'm not just a radio host I'm also a realtor I've heard that Heard that So I've got some inside scoop On some realtor scuttle butt Oh
Starting point is 00:15:05 Scoop. You know John Calipari sold his big house There on Richmond Row The Main Street Mansion The guy who bought it, now it's kind of leaked out. The first time he went into the house, they were, you know, doing their walkthrough, and there was one room that was locked.
Starting point is 00:15:23 And so they finally got in the room, and you know what was in that room? The room was full of timeouts. We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. You're really proud of that one, aren't you? Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the Internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying,
Starting point is 00:15:40 and nobody's telling you, exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer-beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action
Starting point is 00:16:13 with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsLice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you know. to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue
Starting point is 00:16:46 42. Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you
Starting point is 00:17:02 get your podcast. Agency. The ability to know that we're the experts in our own body. On the podcast, cultivating her space, Dr. Dom and Terry Lomax create a space where black women can show up fully and be heard. I wholeheartedly think, you know, you hit 30.
Starting point is 00:17:20 You shouldn't have to share room with anybody. Mm-hmm. From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health. These are real honest conversations. We don't always get to have out loud. Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right? Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them? Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:17:41 During one meal, I'm standing. I'm standing and handing my children food. Because healing, empowerment, and resilience aren't just ideas. Their practices. And this Mental Health Awareness Month, there's no better time to pour back into yourself. Listen to cultivating her space on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam, this Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds.
Starting point is 00:18:10 like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:18:32 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us every. everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:18:50 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, IZAD, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Ryan Drew and Shane here on Kentucky Sports Radio, who's his sponsor. Billy's got his own sponsor. This is Billy's segment. He's got the five fun facts of Duke. Billy's got his own sponsor of this segment. Who is it, Drew? I guess I should let Billy read it then,
Starting point is 00:19:26 but I'll let him rest his voice there. He's had a long morning already. Let's talk about VOA Mid-States. It's part of Volunteers of America. That's what the VOA is for. Our VOA Mid-States branch, which serves Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Clark and Floyd counties in southern Indiana
Starting point is 00:19:41 is our region's largest nonprofit provider of human services. Volunteers of America, Mid-States, provides quality, family-focused services for women seeking addiction recovery at their Freedom House program and offers services for men seeking addiction recovery at their Liberty Place program. Since 1993, the treatment, therapy, and sobriety support programs have helped thousands of women and families across Kentucky recover and rebuild at better than national average rates. If you were someone you love are fighting substance abuse, they're here to help.
Starting point is 00:20:11 VOA mid-states, whoever you are and wherever they serve, they're here to help. Go to V-O-A-Mid.org to learn more or call 502-636-4530. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, here is our KSR. Manager, Billy R. Sports, who left his car running his driveway for about 10 hours the other day. 10 hours. Yeah, thank you very much. Great to be with you. I will say, though, I hated the homework assignment.
Starting point is 00:20:37 How did this happen to me? I thought I got hosed. You got hosed. You had Florida. Mario switched it on you. Yeah, thanks a lot, Mario. We all know Mario's KSR's favorite child. Anytime we go out, Mario, Mario, Mario, where's Mario?
Starting point is 00:20:50 Let's get pictures with Mario. He just does what he wants now. He's out of control, Billy. He just took your team. And unfortunately, he's the only one I can pick on, since he's the only one younger than me. So he traded Duke for Florida. So now you got stuck with Duke. So what are your five fun facts on the Duke Blue Devils?
Starting point is 00:21:04 Well, I know how much this audience loves Duke, so I'm going to stay away from the basketball stuff for the most part. Okay. So we'll start with how much tobacco means to Duke. or to Duke University. I've not heard this. It means a lot. You know, the university actually had several different names when it first started as a college. It was named Trinity College for 65 years from 1859 to 1924,
Starting point is 00:21:24 but they eventually changed it because tobacco businessman James Buchanan Duke made generous donations to the school. It meant so much to them that they named the school after his late father, Washington Duke. But yet, Ryan, it is a tobacco-free campus, despite how influential tobacco is. Tobacco kind of built Duke University. Now it's a tobacco-free campus. Absolutely right. Well, that's a good little fun fact there, Drew. It is. He's off to a good start.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Let's go to tradition. You know, Duke is a lot like Kentucky in a way. They don't do any court stormings, and they never will. But Ryan, after big wins, they burn benches. Not mattresses or couches, but benches. After the 1986 national title game, after they lost to Louisville, the student body was so angry that they started bonfires of school benches after the game. Later in 1990, to try to prevent this, the school sanctioned like a watch party where they had bonfires after the game.
Starting point is 00:22:21 So now, after every win versus North Carolina, they have a tradition where they burn benches, but yet these events are often sanctioned by the schools so they can do it safely. So it started with a bunch of juvenile delinquents and vandals. Vandalism after a loss to Louisville in the title game in 1986 turns into a tradition where they burn benches after they beat North Carolina. What do you think about that one, Shannon? I think that we do it better. Nobody burns benches. We like couches.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Louisville brings out the worst behavior in everybody. They just couldn't take it after losing to Louisville. I get it. Let's go to the alumni, as you guys talked about some of these schools. I mean, they have astronauts, politicians, billionaires. It's hard to know where to start. But here's a couple names. Richard Nixon, the former president.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Is a Duke graduate? It's a Duke alumni. Apple CEO Tim Cook went to Duke. NBA commissioner Adam Silver went to the Duke University. Kyrie Irving and Grant Hill being a couple of the basketball names. Here's a couple more. Matt Jones, you may have heard of him as an alum of Duke University. And Rand Paul actually went to Duke as well.
Starting point is 00:23:24 He completed his residency at Duke before moving to Bowling Green, where he was a licensed physician. Really? We went to Duke with Matt to see his law school, and they have all the pictures of past classes, and we actually saw Richard Nixon's face. That's right. He pointed that out. And we saw Matt's photo, and he was the tallest one in the photo. That's what I was going to ask.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Was there pictures of Matt? Oh, yes. Yeah, yeah. And he graduated, I think, second in his class in Duke Law School. Is that right? Yes. I know. That's pretty impressive.
Starting point is 00:23:52 All right. Number four, let's go to their nickname, the Blue Devils. Back in 1921, Trinity College students' newspaper held a contest to find a catchy name that would be instantly recognizable. Here were the nominations. All right. The Blue Titans, the Blue Eagles, the Polar Bears, the Royal Blazes, the Blue Warriors, and the Duke Blue Warriors, and the Duke Blossers. Blue Devils. Well, they didn't pick any of those names. They played without a nickname for two years.
Starting point is 00:24:17 And then in 1923, the student newspaper just started casually using Blue Devils. It was not met with any opposition and then eventually adopted by the school. I liked the blue polar bears. I would have voted for that one. I like the polar bears too. I think that would have been a good one. Bracken County is the polar bears. That's right. That's right. We get some free t-shirts from there. Yes, we did. Yes, we did. And finally, my final fact, because it is a fact, Duke sucks. I like that.
Starting point is 00:24:44 That's the best fact of the day. Billy R. Sports. Well done. Thank you. Well done. A round of applause from KS. Bar. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:24:50 I appreciate everybody. If I can throw in one extra bonus fact, Duke scientists are credited with making a working invisibility cloak. If you've ever watched Harry Potter, back in the mid-2010s, I think it was, they created a real invisibility cloak that could cover centimeter,
Starting point is 00:25:09 I guess, big objects. and it works and it works I guess the light shines through it instead of around it how does that happen how's that work I don't know but it seems like
Starting point is 00:25:19 one more thing we don't need to invent well I mean the Harry Potter expert so I thought you might have an answer for it yeah that's just another fun fact but there you go
Starting point is 00:25:27 there's the Duke University good job Billy so now you're off to Louisville doing the Terry Miner show I've got Terry Miners to do today from 3 to 6 well tell him we all say hello I will Terry Miners
Starting point is 00:25:35 absolutely radio legend out of Louisville he's the best he is the best all right good job good job All right, 859-280-2287. Mario will be up with his Florida fun facts in the next segment, so stay tuned for that. But we've got a little time for we take a break,
Starting point is 00:25:49 so we want to take a phone call, Shannon? Let's go to Brian and Franklin. Brian and Franklin. Go ahead, Brian. Good morning, gentlemen. I also have another fact to piggyback in on Shannon's facts that he has from Auburn. Clark's wife, Nancy, was a former Miss Kentucky as well, just to kind of piggyback in on that.
Starting point is 00:26:13 Who's Clark? And hi, did you know? Who's Clark's wife, Nancy? Who's Clark? Clark Lee, the trainer. Oh, okay. Gotcha. Clark Lee.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Wasn't that one of your, yeah? Auburn trainer. He was one of your facts. He's from Franklin Simpson. I don't think his name was Clark Lee. Clark Lee is the Vanderbilt coach. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:26:33 That wasn't the name of the person. No, no, not Clark Lee. Sorry, yes. Clark is, Clark Pierce, uh, Clark Pearson. Okay. Was that the name you, you, Shannon? It was something, Pearson.
Starting point is 00:26:43 I don't know. You said Clark Leight and looked at me like I'm an idiot. Sorry. Yeah, that was. All right. Try your next fact. All right. So, next fact is, did you know that the University of Tennessee still has not ever made a final four in men's basketball?
Starting point is 00:27:03 I've heard that. Is that it? That's awesome, right? That's pretty awesome. Wow. Well, I was just going to ask, can I take a stab at a parody? I know what Matt would say, but he's gone. But he's gone?
Starting point is 00:27:19 Yeah, go for it. Yeah? Okay. So, you're on fire. There's no final fours on Rocky Top. It's just not meant to be. They're oh for the final four on Rocky Top. None in history.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Okay. Okay. Rocketop, you'll always be. Huh? Yeah. That's good. Thank you. Appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:27:42 He did great. Right up there with Kentucky Joe, I believe. That is our whiskey thief not call today. Now you know why Matt doesn't allow callers to do this because it's always a trainer. I like to. Yeah. I kind of wish Matt was here because his Reds lost their third straight one-to-nothing game last night. Yeah, all this talk about torpedo bats and L.A. Dela Cruz is one for 12 in the last three games.
Starting point is 00:28:04 His one hit was like a monster shot home run, I think, though. What about the other 11? Three straight, one to nothing. He can't say anything about your Braves because his reds cannot score or run. The season's over for both teams. What's another summer sport that we can move on to? Golf, we've got Masters coming out. I'm all in on golf.
Starting point is 00:28:22 Billy and I will be doing Masters talk next week. How about this? Women's gymnastics. That's right. Don't forget. The UK team advanced to the regionals now. We had a big gymnastics watch party here yesterday. KS. Barr had it on the big screen.
Starting point is 00:28:36 They were at Penn State. They advanced to the regionals. I don't know when it is. probably this coming weekend, but congratulations of them. Yeah, I'm looking up when the regional is. It is tomorrow at 5 o'clock. There you go.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Watch it on Watch ESPN, or we'll have it back on here. Before we go to break, we do want to say one really sad note. Something tragic has happened in Frankfurt this morning. An 8-year-old boy was walking to the school bus. Got swept away in some floodwaters. He didn't make it. So we're getting words on it now. It's just awful.
Starting point is 00:29:08 And that's the dangers of what? Mother Nature can do and it just hit us kind of in the stomach, didn't it? Unbelievable tragic story. All the news outlets are starting to put it out. Now we're just kind of see it on the fly. But my goodness, that's about as sad as something can get. So we'll say a prayer for that little boy's family over there in Frankfurt. All right, Ryan, Drew and Shannon and Billy, Mario's coming up here on Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:29:27 T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome back. Matt is still in Amsterdam. We'll be back until Monday, April 21st. Next week is Drew Palooza Week here at KSR.
Starting point is 00:29:45 You ready, Drew? I'm born ready, you know? Just big-time players make big-time plays and big-time games. I still don't understand why you're all leaving me at once, but if I need to keep this ship above water, I'll just do what I got to do. There was one topic I was going to use today, and I said, no, I can't use it. That's something you're probably going to use next week about aliens. No, we can talk aliens.
Starting point is 00:30:05 I'll talk aliens. Save it for you next week. I've got pyramids and all kinds of conspiracy theories I can get into if you want. Mr. Mario is getting ready to join us, but he has a sponsor also. This is your sponsorship. Stockton Mortgage. Have you heard of him? Yeah, tell me about them.
Starting point is 00:30:20 Listen, Mario, are your homeownership goals this spring about building your dream home? Yeah. Okay, well, listen up. Stockton Mortgage has your back. With our construction loans, you could be celebrating next summer in your custom bill or modular home. It's to Stockton.com to get started and make your dream of reality by this time next year. Stock to Mortgage, NMLS 8259, Equal Housing Lender, NMLS Consumer Access.org. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, it is the most popular member of our KSR crew.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Not even close. Not even close. That is not true. The young stud that we call Mr. Mario Super Mario, you kind of pulled a sneaker on Billy yesterday and traded Duke for Florida. Well, he did do good. Billy did do good with Duke. Billy's best fact he gave, Duke sucks. Duke definitely sucks.
Starting point is 00:31:05 That was probably his best fact that he gave. So you have the Florida Gators. I have the floor. You graduated from Florida. I did. No. No. High school.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Right. We had high school in Florida. Sorry. Definitely. Don't do that. He was a cat. I'm a cat. I'm a cat.
Starting point is 00:31:20 I'm a cat. I'm a cat. I'm the cat. I'm the cat. Yeah, you are. So, Mr. Mario, you have the floor. I have the floor. I probably won't do good as Drew and Billy.
Starting point is 00:31:29 I didn't get to hear Shannon. So, you definitely won't do better than mine. You didn't do a team? I'm the professor. I give the grade at the end of the session. So you're going to give everybody a grade after once this is done? Oh, good, good. All right, cool.
Starting point is 00:31:42 All right, here goes. Here are my Florida facts. First, but not least, this is about the basketball team. Yeah. Two starters on the Florida basketball team in high school, they were unranked. Can you guess who it was? Oh, two. Probably Walter Clayton Jr.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Walter Clayton Jr. is one, and the other one is. Because he went to Iona. Iona. Big time to start Iowa. So the other one would be, Andrew DeClurke. Wrong. I'm going to go
Starting point is 00:32:10 Close. Both of you and Shannon Close. Name starts with the A. Start as an A. Yep. Last name, Martin. Elijah Martin. Oh, Elijah Martin.
Starting point is 00:32:20 Really? Yes, he was unranked. Oh, he's good. Moving on to my next fact. I know you guys like Gatorade. Yes. Gatorade was created at the University of Florida. And this is another question for you guys.
Starting point is 00:32:32 Can you guess what was their first flavor? Orange. Nope. It was orange. Lemon lime. No. This is something that you guys like. Drew drinks it a lot in the morning.
Starting point is 00:32:42 Bourbon. Come on. Probably not bourbon. I took offense to that. Coffee. It is coffee. That was their first flavor. Coffee flavored Gatorade.
Starting point is 00:32:52 I wonder where you're going. How do you know what I drink in the morning? I do always have a coffee. The road trips, man. What's your favorite Gatorade flavor, Mario? I like the orange. Orange one is good. And then the green apple.
Starting point is 00:33:03 I don't know if you guys ever had the green apple. It's a little sweet. sweet, but that's probably my favorite one. Are you too young to remember when it was a glass bottle? I've seen commercials with the glass bottle. Yes. Michael Jordan. There's the OG.
Starting point is 00:33:14 I didn't get the seat in person. All right, moving on, we got, let's see. UF. has the largest student-ran newspaper in the United States. It's called the Alligator. I know Kentucky has, I believe, the Kentucky Colonel. Right. They have the alligator, and it's the largest student-ran newspaper in the United States. Is it really?
Starting point is 00:33:32 Yes, it is. That's a cool little back. has that. Next fact is UF also has an entire home full of bats. So they have this room where students would just go in, you walk in, and then they would just watch
Starting point is 00:33:46 bats fly all night. I thought that was pretty cool, so I added that in there. That's pretty creepy is what that is. Yeah, pretty creepy, but I'd be interested to just, you know, after class, imagine being a student after class and you just go there and you go look at some bats flying around in a room. Kind of weird. In a room or in a house?
Starting point is 00:34:02 It's in like a room, like a building, I would say. I don't know how to really explain it. Why do they let it happen? Why do they keep it? I don't know. It's the home of the Florida back conservatory or something like that. I guess they, yeah, I guess something like that. I don't know. Let's move on to some alumni. All right.
Starting point is 00:34:20 Aaron Andrews, proud alumni of the University of Florida. She was a pom-pom girl or something. She was one of the other. She was a dance or something. Yeah. Pompom girl? Yeah. Dancer? She's on the dancing. Marco Rubio
Starting point is 00:34:35 Yeah Proud alumni Former KSR guest Yes sir Was it really Yes he was On this show I didn't know that
Starting point is 00:34:40 Chris Collinsworth You guys know who that is Oh yes Of course He always slides in Now he lives up in northern Kentucky though Yeah another Kentucky connection
Starting point is 00:34:47 Yeah And then I got somebody To help me out To do some extra homework For me Hunter shout out to Hunter He got me some points Hey Hunter
Starting point is 00:34:55 Jesse Palmer The host of Bachelor Of The Bachelor show He was an alumni of University of Florida Yeah he was a quarterback You got Paul Tibbitts, who was the captain of the plane who dropped the Hiroshima bombs. So he was the actual captain of that plane that had the bomb.
Starting point is 00:35:13 Okay. And he went to the University of Florida. He's an alumni. And this is my favorite because I'm a big Wendy's fan. Wendy, the actual, you know the backstory of Wendy of how her dad took the photo of her daughter, that's Wendy? Yeah. Do you know that backstory?
Starting point is 00:35:28 It's his adopted daughter. He adopted Wendy. She went to the University of Florida. She did. Is she? Yep. Yep, that's all I got. Those are my Florida facts. Good job! Good job, Mario. I can add to the Chris Collinsworth connections. He was at a UK game this year in Rufferino, sitting with Eli Capiludo. Was he?
Starting point is 00:35:45 So I guess we can call him a distant cat. He's their supporting Big Blue. Chris Collinsworth. I was going to say, is it Taconden who's from Perth, Australia? That's right. That's where Max is from. They're from the same area there. He went to U.F. He plays for U.F right now. Okay. Yeah. Okay. One of the other big guys, the one dude that you guys made fun of me
Starting point is 00:36:06 for a year, hand-glogged in the year, hand-lugden. He's playing now. Remember he when I said he was, we got to look out for him. Everybody said, he hasn't played all season.
Starting point is 00:36:14 He's hurt. But you were so far in front of the news. I can see the future. Good job, Mario. Thank you, man. Well done. Well done. Get ahead.
Starting point is 00:36:22 Give us the grades, man. I want to hear the grades. I seriously, and I'm not just saying it. I give all four of you in A-plus. You're much better than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be, you guys were coming. Well, Florida beat Kentucky last year, and we beat them this year.
Starting point is 00:36:36 Some fact like that. You guys came with some good stuff. We did our homework. And I don't think anyone had to cram, right, Shannon? We all had it done last night before bed. Nobody was Googling during the show. No. I already knew all my facts.
Starting point is 00:36:47 All of a sudden. Listen, not only are Shannon and I on vacation next week. You're Mario also on vacation next week. You're going to go down and see your family, see your dad. Your dad's on the disabled list right now. Yeah, he's not doing so well. but prayers for him. Hopefully he gets better.
Starting point is 00:37:02 But yeah, I may go down there, check it out, and visit some family. My brother's back in town, so that should be a lot of fun. But, yeah, it should be cool. I'm looking forward to see what Drew. Drew Palooza is going to be all about. We're going to do some videos to promo it after the show, so it should be a lot of fun. Well, be safe. Tell your family hello, and we're all praying for your dad.
Starting point is 00:37:20 Thank you, man. I appreciate it. It's good to see your family after being stuck with us for so many weeks. I'm glad your brother's going to be home, too. Yeah, it should be fun, man. Appreciate it. Well, you've earned the time off. He has earned it, no doubt.
Starting point is 00:37:30 859-280-2287. That's our phone number. Shane, let's get a call for we go to a break. Who we got? Mark. Mark, go ahead, Mark. Hey, just a minor correction on your trivia at Auburn. The Auburn fans pronounce the name of their football stadium, Jordan Hare, not Jordan.
Starting point is 00:37:53 I've always heard Jordan Hare. Yeah, it's Jordan. Okay. I checked a little bit. with an Auburn guy just a few minutes ago. So they pronounce it. It's spelled J-O-R, but it's actually pronounced J-E-R. All right.
Starting point is 00:38:06 Appreciate the phone call. I hope that was worth. Staying on hold for 30 minutes for. I've always heard Tom Leach, I think, say Jordan Hare. If Tom Leach says Jordan Hare, it's Jordan Hare. It's Jordan-Hare. It's Jordan-Hare. Let's get another phone call.
Starting point is 00:38:16 We get one better now. Let's take a break because our lines are open right now. They're all okay. Well, I've got one more segment. So you want to call, get on board real fast. We'll hook you up. I do want to say there are still some spots available for the KSR Golf Scramble. on May 30th here in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:38:31 The Lexington Golf Scramble always sells out. It's so popular, they're not going to play it on two courses out there at the University Club. One side is already full. They're trying to fill up the second side. So if you want to play, you've tried to play in years past, couldn't get a spot. There are sports available right now. So go to WLP.com.
Starting point is 00:38:49 And it's on KSR posted yesterday. If you read Kentucky Sports Radio.com, you can find it there. I don't want to scare anyone away, but do you know who the defending champ in that Scramble is at that course? it wouldn't be the team of Drew Franklin. It is. We accidentally won. I didn't even think we had that good of a score.
Starting point is 00:39:04 We turned it in and start looking at the scoreboard. It's like, wait a minute. I think we're going to win this. I think it was the same day that you went to jail. Oh, the last time we out there was the university club? I think so. You're right. I won my team with my dad and brother-in-law and friend Corey.
Starting point is 00:39:19 We won because there's two courses. I think we were on Wildcat, which is a little more difficult. One of it was like 14 or 15 under, which in a scramble, that's pretty low. That's usually like seventh. place, but it shows how tough it was that day. So I don't want to scare you by the way. I'm just saying come get some. Come get some of this challenge. Well, if you've got C to the J on your team, that score is not legitimate then. And then after I got my trophy, I went and watched you miss five puts and get hauled off in a police car. Appreciate you bringing that up. All right, we'll take our final
Starting point is 00:39:43 break. Come back our final segment, 859-280-2-287. Ryan, Drew and Shannon, this is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:40:50 This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Where's she at?
Starting point is 00:41:10 Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Agency. The ability to know that we're the experts in our own body. On the podcast, cultivating her space, Dr. Dom and Terry Lulmeck, create a space where black women can show up fully and be heard. I wholeheartedly think, you know, you hit 30. You shouldn't have to share one with anybody.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Mm-hmm. From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health. These are real, honest conversations. We don't always get to have out loud. Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right? Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them? Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:41:55 During one meal, I'm standing. I'm standing and handing my children food. Because healing, empowerment, and resilience aren't just ideas. Their practices. And this Mental Health Awareness Month, there's no better time to pour back into yourself. Listen to cultivating her space on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. American soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming.
Starting point is 00:42:24 Ramers sending on the Army. I'm Tab Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back.
Starting point is 00:42:48 The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us.
Starting point is 00:43:11 Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. Vacation begins in 15 minutes for Shannon T. Dude and myself. That's right. I got my Florida-UK shirt on that one of our listeners brought here to the KS Bar about a month ago, I think. I really liked that shirt. I tweeted a picture.
Starting point is 00:43:34 It's nice. I think that's my favorite shirt you own. I'll let you borrow it if you want to. It's all you. Just you know, I've got like a handful of these I've packed for the trip. One's got lemons all over it. Okay. One's got the Huntsville trash pandas all over it.
Starting point is 00:43:49 What are you and Shannon most excited to do other than just do nothing on the beach? Rubbing oil on each other back? Are there like any events or any restaurants or anything in particular you're going to be doing or just soaking in the sun and rubbing oil on each other? I like to turn it all over to Shannon. He is our tour director because he lives down there most of the time. And he picks out some good restaurants. I gave you suggestions. I don't like to dictate anything.
Starting point is 00:44:09 Some people like to dictate like where we get. No, I'm not going to do. I'll say like here's a place we could go. What do you think? Yeah, he does. He does that. He'll recommend a couple places. What are you feeling?
Starting point is 00:44:19 Like seafood tonight? Do you want to try something different tonight? So you're going to dusties to get oysters. Oh, yeah. We're definitely going to get some oysters. Taking us there. A couple dozen for me. I'm thinking maybe sharkies with the open air bar, the beach right behind us for the final four.
Starting point is 00:44:32 That's perfect. All right. Now I'm just getting mad. Perfect. I regret asking. Pineapple. I like going to Pineapple willies. I don't know touristy.
Starting point is 00:44:37 But the food is good, man. Location's good. I hate you all. But Shannon, the sun will be really, really bright when we're down there. What can we do about that? Well, I'm going to be wearing our sponsor every day that you look at me for the next seven days because it's sponsored by Shady Ray's. Stop overpaying for sunglasses and check out Shady Ray's.

You can try the entire collection in person at their Lexington or Loval Location Plus shop exclusive colorways, only available in store like their blue and white collection. for game days. Shadyrays.com. Got some fun facts about Chris Collinsworth. Oh, I well. Oh, really? Didn't see you going that direction. His dad was from McLaughen County
Starting point is 00:45:47 and played football at Kentucky. I knew that part. I didn't know about McLaughin. I knew his dad had Kentucky connections. Chris Collinsworth married his wife, former UK cheerleader. All kind of Kentucky connections. So, yeah, we can't adopt him. That's why he was there at Rup Arena and watched the game. He's a fan.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Good for him. Welcome to the BBN. All right. We got a couple calls. We haven't taken a lot of calls today. Sorry about that, but we had some special things we wanted to do. So, Shannon, who we got? Blake. Blake, go ahead, Blake. Hey, guys. I've got a question for Ryan and for Drew. I want Drew to give us, like, the best case scenario of a starting five for transfer portal, everything, like what we hope is best. And I want Ryan to give us crystal ball prediction of what he thinks the starting five will be next year. I know that we don't know, but just put it out in the ether and see what we get.
Starting point is 00:46:37 I'll hang up a list. I appreciate. Drew, you go first. Well, who we got back? We got to have O-A in there. So I'm going to put him at the three. I'm just completely guessing on this because there's so many names up there. I'll put Pierre from Jacksonville State at the two.
Starting point is 00:46:54 I kind of like the new Princeton guard that just popped up this morning. I'll make him our one. Yaxel. We've got to get Yaxel. We might have to overpay for Yaxel. And Brandon Garrison. I don't know if Yaxel and Gerson. I don't know if Yaxel Garrison works. Maybe it does. I'll say Garrison at the 5.
Starting point is 00:47:11 I'm almost the same. And no one write that down and say this is Drew's prediction, because that was completely off the cuff and not knowing as much of the portal as that shit. So I was going to go, Otega and Garrison, starters, returners. I've also going to throw Yaxel in there. I want Yaxel. He's the star. Got to go get a stud. Whether if Auburn leads for him or Alabama leads for him, I think Kentucky's still in a good position with him. And the other two, I think, will be guys we've not even talked about yet. I think they'll get some point guard. We don't know yet and their fifth start will be somebody we haven't even talked about yet i mentioned his name but uh jalen low from pittsburg is another one they're in on that could be the point guard uh didn't
Starting point is 00:47:48 really get into him but he was on a crappy pittsburgh team but put up great numbers and was all uh all a cc maybe third team he's another one in the mix was there another question the guy had nope i think that was all right shan let's get another caller who we got darren darren go ahead darren good morning guys Hello, Darren. Can you hear me? We hear you. We're out of clear. Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:48:11 All right. Mine, I guess, is kind of a continuation of the last. I've got a question and a comment. First, my question is kind of a follow-up. How many of these guys do you think that on the roster we have right now will come back? I mean, what's a percentage of all of them coming back? And I'll hang up after this comment. I hope Houston wins it all, but it won't hurt my feelings.
Starting point is 00:48:35 If Auburn or four to win, I just don't want Duke to win. Appreciate it. I think a lot of SEC fans, especially Kentucky fans, feel the same way. Well, right now, Otega, Garrison, and the three freshmen, Chandler, Perry, Noel, for all we believe they're all five coming back. Yeah, I mean, I think you've got nine guys already. If they were to go out and get Yaxel and like three other big men, maybe Garrison's like, whoa, what's going on here, but I still expect him back.
Starting point is 00:48:57 Same other way in the freshman. Then you got Cam Williams already on board, so that makes none. One more quick caller, Shannon. Who we got? Let's go to Brian. Brian, real quick. What do you got, Brian? Yeah, just real quick.
Starting point is 00:49:11 Looking forward to next week for Drew Palooza. You need to get with Kentucky Brandon and have some shirts done with that. Hope you guys have a great vacation. Look forward to your show each and every day. Great way to start the day. Three hours of this non-stop Kentucky. Love it. Thanks for all you guys do.
Starting point is 00:49:26 Appreciate it. Yeah, Drew Palooza starts on Monday. You're ready for the big week? We're all gone. We're going to run the ship by yourself. You know, I still got some planning to do. like Mario wants to make a video with me teasing it. I don't really know what I'm going to say because I'll get it figured out.
Starting point is 00:49:40 But Monday I can go ahead and say there was one guest in high demand, and it might surprise you. Maybe not surprise you. But Corey Price, a lot of people wouldn't hear from Corey Price. So Billy's my co-host. Billy and I will be in studio, but Corey's going to join us for a little bit. And we're going to kind of go over, since it's National Championship Monday. Yes.
Starting point is 00:49:58 We're going to go over the eight championships with some fun facts. Of course, we'll preview that game, recap the Final Four. then I'll just ask him a few things like, how in the hell do you find all these pictures of people? And just, you know, everybody knows Corey from digging up dirt and going back in history, all these old newspaper clippings. I'm going to make him explain that.
Starting point is 00:50:15 But mostly Monday will be a celebration of our eight championships and a preview of the one Monday night. Might try to get some former champs on the phone. That's cool.
