Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.

Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing, and honestly, just kind of lonely.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the psychology of your 20s is breaking down the science behind the biggest roadblocks we face.
I was six years into my career, the 80-hour weeks and just the first one in, the last one out, and I ended up burning out.
There was a large chunk of my 20s that I, like, was just so wanting to, like, be out of that phase out of my skin.
And I just, like, really regret not living in the present more.
You don't need to have everything figured out right now.
You just need to understand yourself a little bit better.
Listen to the psychology of your 20s on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
What's up, guys?
This is Clivert Taylor the 4th.
And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me, he goes,
hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
Hey, rep, my mama wants you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.

in for Matt Jones with Billy Rutledge and Corey Price here going over Kentucky's
eight national championships.
Got to confess something.
I had a few too many donuts during that break.
You know, I'm trying an April diet.
I didn't know Corey brought a dozen.
I had several while you stepped out, Billy.
Well, that's because they're good.
They're North Lime.

Equal housing lender. Thank you, Corey.
You don't even have notes in front of you. Thank you for the help there.
One assist for Corey there.
Yeah. I'm still worried we're going to be behind on our assignment.
So let's just jump right back into our championship game, knock a few more out.
I wanted to give more time to 48.
You were a great 48.
First one, we'll always remember you.
But we've got to keep moving.
How about just the next year?
1949, Corey, they did it again.
Didn't take a longer second one.
They were 32 and 2 that in the year.
Season long, 21 game winning streak,
number one in the final poll in the AP.
Alex Grozer was six in the country in scoring that year,
20.5 points a game.
That team had six future draft picks.
Four went on to play.
and the pros.
They were top five in the country
in scoring offense,
scoring margin,
and free throw percentage.
They had three All-Americans,
Ralph Beard,
Alex Groza and Wai-Jones
for back-to-back years.
They brought like four of the FAB five back.
That was hard to say,
especially with donuts still in my mouth.
Groza Beard, Wai-Wi-Jones,
and Cliff Barker.
My guy, Cliff Barker.
Yeah.
Hero.
I got a fun Cliff Barker note
in my 49 recap here.
in the regular season finale, they beat Vandy 70 to 37 at Vanderbilt,
including a last second 65 footer by my guy Cliff Barker.
I just got to know why are we taking 65 footers while we're about 40 points.
I'm not against it.
Run it up on Vandy, but Cliff is out there firing.
Like, no mercy.
He's doing bombs both on it.
I love Cliff Bark.
Alex Groza was Helms National Player of the Year and Final Four most,
standing player. They were perfect 13-0
and the SEC won the season
and the Commerce Tournament. And they defeated Oklahoma A&M, which is now
Oklahoma State, 46, 36, and the national title game.
And of course, Alex Grozer was a lead to score with 20-5 points.
Groza was a bucket. Song of the year, cruising down the river by
Blue Baron and his orchestra, according to Corey Price.
This is the year of the first Polaroid camera was
sold. All the Kingsmen won the Academy Award for Best Picture. What a great
year in 1949. Kentucky, Out
won the SEC tournament, winning four games by a combined 123 points.
I feel like that's pretty big.
That's pretty good.
I feel like a Polaroid photo from that championship run would go for a lot of money.
I do like that Groza, Wawa, and Ralph Beald all just decided to run it back.
I mean, they just have five, too.
Back-to-back titles.
They just say, let's do it again.
And they do it again.
So very cool to hear.
Since it's kind of the same era, let's just keep a roll with 1951.
I mean, we were hot from 48 to 51, very, very.
very hot.
3,004 years, 51, same record as 49, 32 and 2.
They had a 21 game win streak before their loss in the SEC tournament championship against Vanderbilt.
Number one in the final AP poll.
They were top five in the country and scoring offense and scoring margin.
The leading score was Bill Spivey.
He was one of the first good seven-footers in college basketball.
Two All-Americans, Frank Ramsey and Bill Spivey.
Five future NBA players and draft pick.
Not surprisingly, Bill Spiveyby was the Helms National Player of the Year and Final
foremost, a Australian player.
They were a perfect 14-0 in the SEC, but like I said, lost in the tournament finals to Vandy.
And in the finals of the tournament, they defeated Kansas State 68-58, and Bill Spivey, 22.21
rebounds.
Monster game.
Wow.
The Big 7-4 is.
What a big game.
I want to add, I like this team, because in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, they
played a school known as the University of Louisville, and they handed them that L.
said Louisville, you go on home. First time they had played Louisville in the
United States. I think Duval's gotten used to that by now, right? Yeah. Bill Spivey and the
boys in 51 started all this butt-kicking Kentucky start with dead for the next 70 years.
Also, 1951 was Memorial Coliseum's first year when they won it in 49. That's kind of credited
with sparking the excitement to start construction on that. So 51 debuted Memorial Coliseum
and won the title. I don't think he played a lot, but
CM Newton, I believe, was on that roster.
Wasn't Juby Hall
on the 51 team? He can play very much.
Just three game appearances, but you know what?
He had a jersey.
And while we're just shouting out random people on the roster,
Madisonville's own Frank Ramsey,
a Hall of Famer, a legend.
He does nothing but win championships.
One like a million with the Boston Celtics.
One in 51 with Kentucky.
Winning. That's what Frank Ramsey did.
Before we move on to the next one,
just a few years later, let's knock out some calls.
I don't want to make people waiting anymore.
Who's up next, Rick?
Daniel is up next.
Daniel, thanks for calling in.
What are you got for us.
Talk to us.
Daniel.
Daniel?
I can hear it.
Park twice if you're in Milwaukee.
Are you there, Daniel?
Daniel, my brother.
All right, we're going to move on.
All right, we'll move on to Indiana Luke.
Indiana, Luke, are you there?
I'm here, boys.
There is.
A couple things.
Yeah.
Yeah, for sure.
I want to just say that you guys are,
doing a bang-up job here holding down the fort while the entire crew decided to take vacation
on you at the same time. Bebian loves you. We got your back. We're behind you this week and you're
going to crush it. I had a question. Yeah, for sure, guys. I feel like we really lacked a,
like an athletic wing type player this year. Is Cam Williams, does he fit that mold for us? Or do you think we
need to maybe target somebody else in that like 6-6 to 6-8 range that can be quick off the dribble,
create their own shot and whatnot.
I appreciate the call and I appreciate the kind of words.
Before I get to Cam Williams, Billy, people have been very nice.
All leading up to this, people are saying they're excited, send me personal messages, a lot of
support.
I didn't get to answer all of them, but it means a lot to me that our listeners don't
hate me and they're excited for this week.
So starting with him and everyone else that's reached out, I appreciate it.
But you're a hard worker, Drew.
And we take notice of that.
And glad that you're going to be able to talk interrupted over the next couple of days.
And even when you hosted the post game show and KSR last year, I think you did a great job.
So, you know, this has been a long time coming.
So don't think that you're not ready for this moment.
Yeah.
And, you know, those guys might not have a job when they get back.
They're the ones that all scheduled vacation.
I'll add during the championship.
Even Mario.
I mean, what if we were in the championship?
Yeah.
It shows the mentality.
What if the title game was tonight?
I would be in San Antonio by myself with the radio equipment that doesn't
work in a big empty Airbnb by myself calling you back here in Lexington.
We'd have a pre-imposed game.
I wish that had been the case.
To his point about the athletic wing, I think people are sleeping on Cam Williams a little bit.
Good 3-and-D guy.
You know, he kind of committed in the middle of NCAA tournament, kind of got glossed over a little
bit.
His name hadn't been mentioned a lot when looking forward to next year with all the pieces
they already have.
But I think that was a good addition.
It's a guy with some NBA potential.
Didn't put up huge scoring numbers at Tulane, but a lot of people rave about his
athleticism and potential is a big three and D and that's exactly what they need.
And I think that's something that many in Big Blue Nation was yearning for from the previous
roster was more athleticism, right? And that can get it done with Cam Williams at the three.
I still expect them to get somebody else like a shooter out there, but.
Got to get a shooter.
Yeah, I mean.
Low, we can talk about how we like low, not necessarily a great shooter.
Hopefully his numbers go up a little bit.
O way, we know what he is.
The way Pope runs at offense, he does need to add some shooting.
Yeah, and have depth.
Right? I mean, Kobe Brea was going to be the sixth man before he was thrusted into the starting roll.
So things can change throughout the year. So you've got to get a lot more guys on this roster as of now.
Let's get one more call in, Rick.
Okay, Jerry's up next. Talk to us, Jerry.
What's up, Drew? How are you doing?
I'm excellent. Thanks for asking.
All right.
He just wanted to know how you're doing, Drew.
Did we lose him?
Oh, there he is.
Go ahead.
Carry on.
Yeah, supposedly Alvro. He's been in Spain the past couple of weeks, but he gets back today.
so watch out our commitment here the next couple of days.
And then I was hoping you to ask them, but I just saw a poll check,
an update about Quintan, and we're giving him a little interest.
So I'll just let him know if I had anything say about that.
But I'll get that, boys.
What was that last name?
It was muffled there.
Quintan.
Okay.
Thank you.
Appreciate the call.
Is that Jaden, Quaitance, maybe?
Quaintance?
I'm not sure.
I don't know.
His first question, what was the first question I got thrown off?
I could barely hear that.
The first part.
I had an answer and it's already slipped my mind.
Well, we were talking about athletic bigs, right?
Yes.
Oh, Robert Morris, our boy.
Yeah, the Spanish guy.
Yeah, he said, yeah, coming back from Spain today.
I'm going to trust you.
I haven't seen that reported, but the caller said he's coming back from Spain.
I'm going to trust in the caller.
Well, then he's coming back from Spain.
I mean, he wouldn't lie to us.
No, we mentioned that at the beginning of the show.
He is definitely one to watch.
That's been reported since the beginning that he and Pope have a good
connection. Sounded like he just wanted to get on campus and, you know, been in Spain, man.
It's got to go home, see the family for a little bit. So if today's the day is getting back,
I would expect some news on that soon. Our boy Alvaro Foguerres is what we're saying,
hoping we're pronounce it right. But he was a 14 points per game guy at Robert Morris can rebound.
Best part shot 40-something percent from three, 41 percent from three, I think, Billy.
Yeah, I'm excited if that's somebody that Kentucky can add that he can be a real contributor at the
did you see the photo that was posted on the Bond That Bridge, so to speak,
Facebook page of Mark Pope taking a picture with a fan in San Antonio.
It looked like he had just been given bad news over the phone.
Yeah, the caption said Mark Pope just lost a recruit and still took a picture.
I think that was the Taylor Bowen from Florida State.
You know, Pope's Mr. Nice Guy. I've never seen him not smiling,
but they caught him in a moment there.
I was shocked to see that photo just because he did not look happy at all.
And it was not because of the photo.
It could not have been the way.
way that guy takes photos for three hours after a game.
So something must have just happened.
So it was incredible timing in that photo over the weekend.
Yeah, those kids decades from now will have their picture with Mark Pope just looking so mad
at the world.
So mad in that while on his phone.
He had just gotten bad news.
I guess let's take another break.
Then we'll get back to our championship game.
Got a little championship trivia.
Just talking more championships, more calls, more fun.
Here on a Monday, it's Drew, Billy and Corey Price and we'll be right back.

These are real honest conversations.
We don't always get to have out loud.
Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right?

Absolutely not.

Welcome back to Kedarek Sports Radio, Drew Franklin, with Billy Rutledge and Corey Price.
We're celebrating Kentucky's eight national championships before two other
teams play for this year's championship. We wish we could be there, but instead we're just
thinking about the fond memories, Billy. We are. We had some great final four games. Now we
cap it off with the national championship game tonight. Florida winning could cap off the best
season ever for a conference, right? Yeah, I mean, they look so good. I don't like to admit when one
of our SEC brethren are doing better than us, but it's been that way for a few years. Florida can
win its third title tonight. But we're going to focus on the time Kentucky won way back in, what are we on
in 1958.
I think we've done three.
We were a Fiddlin 5.
We've done the FAB 5 in their returning year.
Why were they Fiddling in 1958, Corey?
Preseason rep mentioned how their schedule was so difficult that they needed
violinists to play the schedule, and they had the guys that could only fiddle.
So they were just Fiddling 5.
I like that.
I have their T-shirt.
I have their T-shirt.
Says Fiddling 5.
Never really knew what that meant.
This team was, they had their struggles during,
during the year. Their record overall was 23 and 6.
They only had, their biggest win streak, the entire year was only eight games in December, January.
Heading into the last five games, they were only 18 and 6, but they won their last five.
They won the ones that mattered.
They were 12 and 2 in the SEC, won the conference.
Number nine in the final 8A.P poll.
They had one All-American, Vernon Haddon, who unfortunately passed away recently.
Just lost him a few weeks ago.
Yep.
They had four guys selected in the draft.
Three went on to play in the pros.
They were top five in the country in free throw percentage.
And they defeated Seattle, 8472 in the national title game.
And Vernon hadden went off.
He scored 30.
30 points.
That game was in Louisville, right?
Freedom Hall, that's right.
That would have been pretty cool.
I wouldn't allow for that, but I bet that was quite a party winning a national championship.
I was negative 27.
So, yeah, wasn't quite there yet.
The late Vernon hadn't.
Also that season hit a half-court shot to force overtime against Temple.
In the U.K. then won, one of the biggest shots in UK history.
And he hit another shot against Temple in the final four.
We had a lot of beef with Temple back in the day.
Some of the teams we've already mentioned played Temple.
I think the 49 team or 48 team might have lost the Temple in the regular season,
then avenged it later.
Temple was a little thorn in Kentucky side, but not that year in 1958.
No, sir.
I have a Vernon Hatton quote about playing for Rupp.
He says, it takes you six to eight years to get over playing for Adolf Rup,
but once you get over it, you get to like him.
So I guess that's a nice thing to say.
A little like Patino.
You're probably hating it in the moment.
You're doing some wind sprints maybe.
And then you realize much later on the lessons that he taught you.
They probably listen to Tequila by the champs.
That's right.
I love that you've added the song of the year.
I appreciate the show prep on that.
Elvis released Jell House Rock in that season also.
A little popular song, a little fun music trivia.
you. Let's just keep it moving. Let's go to
1978. This is one I know actually
a lot about. I have gone out of my
way to learn more about the 78
team. Before I was born, but you know
I want to be knowledgeable. I read Goose's
book. They call me Goose. I highly
recommend that. I took it on vacation last summer.
Read it completely through there at the beach
and the pool. A lot of good insight there
from him. There's lots
of documentaries been done about it. Kyle Macy
has a great YouTube channel
or interviews players. I watch those.
But tell me about 1978. That was a
final. It was. They were
30 and two. They started the season hot.
They started off 14 and 0.
They were 16 and 2 and the SEC
were Rutgers Houston champions.
Number one in the final
AP poll, of course, the goose was golden.
He was the leading score on that team.
18.1 points per game.
They were top five in the country in
field goal percentage. They had three
All-Americans. The Goose, of course, Kyle
Macy, Rick Robey. They had 10
guys drafted. Unfortunately, only
actually played in the pros, but to have 10 draft picks is insane.
Goose was... Best day in UK history at the time.
It was, actually, yeah.
Goose was Helms National Player of the Year and Final Four most outstanding player.
And, of course, we beat the Blue Devils 9488 in the National Tiler Game, and Goose went off.
He scored the last 16 points for UK in the first half, where a total of 41, which I believe is the third most ever in a national title game.
I know this off top of my head from reading the book.
it was three points shy of Bill Walton's record.
Bill Walton's 44, yeah.
And the book is very thorough in how it came to be.
Duke was really bad at defense,
and they did not make adjustments.
And Joe B. Hall, who also snapped the 20-year streak of not having a title,
kind of got that monkey off his back and following Adolf Rup, got the ring here.
But he said, just keep feeding Goose.
Because for some stupid reason, Duke stayed in the zone,
and Jack just carved him up all around the perimeter.
27 shots.
Just got Mike Jiminsky had nothing for Goose.
My grandparents, they had the Sports Illustrated cover, the Goose's Golden, framed in their living room.
So as a young kid, even though when I was a toddler, I didn't know what that meant,
but I've been looking at a picture of Jack Givens for as long as I can remember from that game.
We should have called Jack, had him on the show.
I know.
What are we doing?
I mean, he could tell this a lot better than I can.
That Sports Illustrated cover is the first thing that comes to mind for me.
I mean, iconic.
The original lefty, Goose, scoring 41 in that championship game, in the last 16.
In the last 16, that is incredible.
Doing it against Duke.
This just makes it so much better.
You know, they probably listened to Night Fever by the Vigi's, Corey.
That's probably what they did.
That's probably how they celebrated.
It's probably wore a bell ball albums too while we'll listen to it.
There we go.
Look at all this history lesson.
We're having to fly through it.
For some reason, I plan for an eight-hour show.
This goes by so fast, Billy.
Well, you know, when you're having fun, it can time can fly.
I also think about Joe B winning that 78 championship, you know,
originally a player and then to do it as a coach.
with all the pressures from Rupp.
I mean, I remember hearing that Rupp had a call-in show after he retired,
and he would bash Joby Hall on the show.
I mean, on the call-in show, he's bashing the coach.
So it's just incredible that he was able to get it done
and got that monkey office back.
He did.
We got a little time left here.
Corey, didn't you bring some trivia?
You want to fire off a few.
I don't want to put you on the spot.
Maybe you didn't have trivia.
It looks like Corey brought 50 pieces of paper in here.
I've never seen so much paper for show prep.
Why don't you throw me and build you?
a championship question before we go to a break here.
Matt always said too most important things
for the first impression and the last impression.
Would you're making a good first?
Might have had too many donuts, but you're doing great.
I try.
U.K.S. won. There are eight national titles in eight
different states. Can you name those eight
different states? We've already
covered a couple of them. We just said they won in Louisville.
So there's Kentucky.
That's a great question. They won in Seattle.
It's Washington.
Seattle.
We just said they won in St. Louis.
Missouri.
Kind of helps we just went over these.
New Orleans, Louisiana.
New Orleans.
Meadowlands, that's New Jersey.
98 was San Antonio.
Versus Utah, right?
Texas.
Minneapolis, Minnesota, is that one?
Yep.
How many have I done?
Cooking over here.
You've done seven.
Did you sweep the whole category?
Yeah, what year am I forgetting?
The first one.
I went out of order.
Oh, we just did that.
48.
48.
They won in
just said it.
What was it?
Big city, huge city.
Oh, they won in the Garden, New York.
Yeah, there you go.
I was combining Meadowlands and the Garden.
New Jersey's across the river.
Very well.
Did we just run through that?
Very good.
Very good, Drew.
All right, thank you.
Not even we.
It was you.
Give us another one.
Put Billy on the spot.
Oh, Lord.
Oh, Billy.
Who's the only UK freshman to score
at least 20 points
in a national title win?
Well, we know it wasn't Anthony Davis.
He had to stop shooting the ball
to just block.
but a freshman with 20 points.
Wasn't one on the 2012 team?
No, because Duran scored all the points and he's a sophomore.
He's a sophomore, yeah.
Want me to butt in with a guess?
Is it 90s?
I think it's 96.
I'm not positive if this person was a freshman.
We know it wasn't Mills because he wasn't scoring that much in any title game.
Is that a shot at Cameron Mills?
Oh, out of him.
Was Ron Mercer a freshman in 96?
Ron Mercer.
He came off the bench to score it.
to score 20.
Look at this.
Drew is in Fuego.
Look at this.
I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express
last night.
Yeah.
Give me one more.
So, UK has played against 69 different players
and their national title wins.
Nice.
Who is the only one that is currently
in the Neesmith Memorial
Basketball Hall of Fame?
Only one guys in the Hall of Fame?
It's worked backwards, Kansas.
They didn't have any Hall of Famers.
No.
Utah, Syracuse, no.
Oh, wait.
We just said it.
Elgin Baylor.
Elgin Baylor.
Seattle.
Seattle.
It helped that you gave us this history lesson before I asked for trivia questions.
Thank goodness we did the history lesson before.
That's why I'm here.
Would you have gotten that one, Billy?
I've been showing off here.
I've been flexing.
I think Baylor may have came to me after a while because Kansas didn't have anybody.
Neither did what Syracuse.
Also, how old are you?
I am turning 30 next month.
So a lot of these were pre-billy.
I mean, they're pre-grue, but I at least remember 96 and 98.
Don't remember 96 or 98 at all.
Tough, tough game if you only remember one national championship.
When we come back, Corey has a gift.
Well, A, a gift for me in this bag that keeps moving.
He also has a gift from God.
He can name every championship team.
I'm going to put him on the spot.
Since 48.
Since 48.
Don't you dare ask him about 1947, Billy.
Please don't.
But I'm going to make you just run through all of them as fast as you can't.
And then I'm going to open this package.
But it's Drew here with Billy and Corey.
We're having a great time.
We're trying to give you the history of Kentucky's championships.
It's been a Cliff Notes version that we're just having to run through them.
The show goes on and on, but we appreciate the calls we've gotten so far.
We've got a few more on the line.
And then we'll get to 96, 98, and 2012.
And then hopefully we'll have a ninth win on down the road.
But we'll be right back after this break as we're talking championships on Championship Monday.
I'm not Matt Jones.
I'm Drew Franklin.
Matt Jones is in Amsterdam.
I'm in Lexington with Billy R. Sports and Corey Price going over championships.
I've definitely over programmed because we have six callers and three more championships to go.
And a gift in front of me that I finally need to open.
Corey Price, I'm going for it. What did you get me?
Oh, it's a hat. What does that, what does the hat say, though?
It says Rintucky. I didn't even notice. You got me a custom Rintucky hat.
If you noticed the Drew Palooza graphic, the hat says Rentucky.
Yeah, Mario made a graphic before he left for vacation.
One of four people that took vacation this week, if I mentioned that.
And it says Rintucky on my hat. I think that was an AI issue.
So Corey got me a custom Rintuckie hat. I'm going to be rocking out.
And this is a good one.
Oh, wow.
shirt. It's Lisa. It's the Lisa t-shirt from Mario's other AI graphic. Man, you were just
turning me into a robot. They're already taking my job on KSR. I can't Photoshop anymore because
they've made it too damn easy. Now they'll write blog posts for you. I don't do that. People
shouldn't do that. But they're coming for my job. So now you got me dressed like an AI character.
That's right. Thank you. That's very funny. Nice reference to Mario's graphic last year.
That's a quick turnaround too. Yeah, I'm impressed. The Rentucky hat and the
I have to get a picture with all that. Before I get some of these calls, I'm going to put you on the spot.
I mentioned you know the championship team from every year.
Since 48.
Don't you dare ask about 1945.
Billy, stop thinking about 46.
I see it in your eyes.
We don't know that one.
We haven't looked it up yet.
Big year for Oklahoma.
I was going to just have you run through it and show off your work.
But for time constraints, and because I think it'll be more difficult, can we just
throw you a random year?
Is it one of those things we need to start at a baseline?
No.
You can give a year.
Billy, why don't you throw Corey a year?
The champion of 1963 was who, Corey?
Lolloya, Chicago.
Loyola, Chicago wins in overtime, 60 to 58 over Cincinnati.
I'm going to let our callers get on in this game.
Let's run through some of these calls, but with each caller, I want you to throw Corey a year.
So, Rick, who's up first?
Derek, is up first.
Derek, start with a year for Corey and then get to what you want to tell us.
Well, what year do you want me, I don't know, let's say 78.
There you go.
I think he's going to have that one.
That would be Kentucky.
Nailed it.
Wow.
What else is on your?
your mind, Derek?
Okay.
No,
yeah, that was easy.
Yeah, you know, Drew,
you know,
this kid from Pittsburgh,
maybe he's exactly what we need.
But help deprogram me.
You know,
I'm used to
the John Walls,
the Brandon Knights,
the Deeran Foxes,
Tyler Ullis,
who was a dog,
despite his size,
Shee Gilder's Alexander.
kids like, you know, Darren Fox, kids like that,
who could absolutely just take over a game.
And now I'm supposed to get excited about a kid that shot 26%
for 37% overall on a, as you said, Drew,
an absolutely god-awful Pittsburgh team.
And he's the savior of UK basketball.
I mean, help deprogram me,
or am I just totally wrong that those guys weren't any good?
We need a third team all ACC,
you know, down, you know,
down third team all SEC or ACC player in a down year in that conference.
All right.
I appreciate the call.
I'm with you.
I think a lot of Kentucky fans feel this way.
We knew when Mark Pope got hired that we need to hit the little the men and black
mind eraser and start fresh.
It's not as fun to get a commitment from a guy that was at a, you know,
Pittsburgh that wasn't any good.
And they're saying, well, he's top five of the portal point guardsman.
He asked, but he wasn't the number one target.
It is different times.
It's not getting the five-star McDonald's All-American
that we did for many years.
But how many times did we win with the five-star?
Right.
McDonald's All-Americans.
I mean, at the end of the day,
we're trying to win banners.
And as fun as those guys were,
and I'm not trying to, you know,
throw shade at the Caliperi era because I loved it.
It was a lot of fun.
This is what college basketball is now.
I mean, Cooper Flagg was special.
Cooper Flagg will also be watching on the couch tonight.
Walter Clayton came from Iona.
I think he wasn't even like top 30 or 40
when he was in the transfer portal.
So I know this time of year it's not sexy to look at your roster
and you've got a bunch of guys that were other schools
and you're bringing together.
But with Mark Pope, this is how it's going to be.
You're going to trust his coaching.
You know, not to throw more shade at the last era,
but in-game coaching and player development,
Mark Pope has the edge there.
And we just have to trust that he knows what he's looking for.
He knows the fit and he'll bring it all together.
Just like he did last year,
that roster we had last May was not very impressive on paper.
We love that they all year they talked about,
their appreciation of Kentucky.
We said it many times.
These guys love being here.
I think that was a fan favorite for a lot of teams.
That's completely different than what it was for Cal for many years.
And they still made the Sweet 16, had a good run.
We weren't better than Sweet 16s, and we want better than the 345th guy at the portal.
But it just kind of is what it is at this point.
We just have to trust in Pope's coaching and finding the right pieces and that'll all come
together when they finally play a game next fall.
But it is uncomfortable.
Some fans, I think, are overreacting too much.
But to be April and you're just saying.
seeing this kind of hodgepodge of players that we didn't know much about
as opposed to.
You get DJ Wagner.
We knew about DJ Wagner since seventh grade.
You know,
you get some of these recruits.
They've been talked about nationally for years before they even get here.
We're learning these guys on the fly.
And it doesn't feel the same.
But it's not the same.
And it feels different.
But we are, like the caller said,
having to reprogram how we look at this because this is just how it's going to be.
Yeah, change is intimidating.
I get it.
But you mentioned DJ Wagner.
He was a highly recruited guy that didn't really work out at Kentucky.
So there is not a consensus.
way of doing things. I think Savior is a bit much for the pit point guard, but somebody that can grow. I don't know if we
need to expect Xavier. Yeah, exactly. You know, even Lamont Butler, while he had his moments at San Diego State,
I don't think he was looked on as somebody that's going to be a consensus draft pick in the NBA.
So, I mean, he was able to find a role and do great things for Kentucky. And I think the same could
happen with this new guy. And even bigger than the portal editions, retaining players, we never did
that the last 15 years. That's how teams are winning now. A lot of veteran teams.
teams were in the final four, made big runs.
As we're looking at portal players and you're worried about this, worried about that,
imagine you just signed Otega O'Way out of the portal.
He'd be very happy, assuming he comes back and if they don't keep O'way back,
which I haven't heard anything about that.
But if O'Way would be gone, that's a different conversation.
We'll be very upset then.
But you're bringing back a guy that was second team, All-S-E-C when Pope brought him in
as the sixth man from Oklahoma.
We didn't expect him to start.
And they turned him into all-S-E-C, the freshman.
We expect big jumps from Noah.
Chandler, I think we expect a big jump.
Garrison, we hope there's a big jump.
It's just so completely different than it was,
but it can still be very good and can still work out.
So you think the caller's right to a degree we need to be reprogrammed?
We knew this when Pope got hired, we need to reprogram,
because it's just going to be so different in these off seasons.
This is the first full one we've had under Pope.
That's more of the reprogramming.
You're not crazy for being disappointed in how it looks right now,
but I don't think it's nearly as bad as some fans,
at least on Twitter think it is.
because a lot of this still has to play out.
Portals open two more weeks, and no one has a clue how these guys will actually pan out when they get together and play together.
We cannot just keep watching a YouTube video and reading a portal ranking and throwing a guy away or lifting a guy up.
You really don't know until they get in the system and get together.
It does feel like the sky is falling every time Kentucky doesn't get one of these top guys.
And probably the case that a guy that will be on Kentucky's roster hasn't even entered the portal yet.
And we want more.
Like, I wanted Yaxil.
I mean, Yaxil is one of the players that would have really gotten a lot of excitement.
Michigan gets him.
That stinks.
Now we just got to hope he goes in the NBA, so that one looks good.
I mean, Pope still needs to get some bigger fish.
But you also just got to trust him when he sees a guy and brings him in, you know, he trusts it.
And some of these people they contact when it says we Zoom, we have no idea what they talked about.
Pope could have gotten on a Zoom.
The kid could have said, I want 20 shots and $2 million.
And Pope could have said in session.
And then it just said the kid goes somewhere else.
And online, the reaction is where we lost.
him too. We have no idea what's going on
behind the scenes with their conversations. That's a great point because
you could go on the Zoom and they offer
an absurd amount of money or they
want an absurd amount of money. That's
just not going to line up with the values
that you want on your roster.
There's a lot of things we don't know
but we're trying to guess and but that's what we have to do
on sports talk radio. And we're Kentucky fans.
We're crazy. That's what we do. We overreact. I'm
including myself and you two. I mean
some of it over the top right now
but overall this is why
we're Kentucky. We care way too much.
Corey,
19792.
1972 would be the UCLA Bruins.
That's a good one.
How about...
That's correct.
1961.
1961 would be the Cincinnati Bearcats.
1962.
That would be the Cincinnati Bearcats.
They went back to back.
They did.
I'm going to stomp you.
What about 1983, Corey?
83 would be the NC State Wolfpack.
That's right.
Jim Valvano.
All right.
One more, 1954.
It would be LaSalle.
God, you even knows LaSalle.
Yeah.
What about 1939, the first year, Corey, and outside of the range that you gave us?
I actually do know this one.
This would be Oregon.
That's correct.
Man's cooking.
Let's knock off another on our history lesson.
It's my favorite of the bunch.
Most people would argue one of the greatest teams ever in college basketball history.
I am most people.
Yep.
34 and 2 record.
They had a 27 game winning streak before they lost in the SEC tournament finals to Mississippi
State, a fellow final four team.
They were perfect 16 and 0 in the SEC
during the season.
Number two in the final AP poll.
We know the coach that was number one.
What was his name?
Cal, I heard him.
Leading scoring that team was Tony Delke.
UK was top two in the country
and scoring offense, scoring margin,
assists per game, and steals per game.
Wow. Yep.
Corey, you're like me. We're same age. We're going to hit 40
this summer. Ninety-six was the best
year in the history of the world, right? I mean, not just this title. Ninety-six was just the best
year ever. We got the Nintendo 64. Wait, I just noticed in my notes. We forgot one thing before we
celebrate 96. Mark Pope, Big Bucket in the Midlands game. Of course. That was just the right age.
We were 10, 11. Oh, these were like superheroes. That was the right age. Plus,
they were dominant, so they were fun to watch. The denim jerseys were something cool.
as a 10-year-old,
11-year-old,
it was just a great time.
I had every piece of denim
that they would sell.
T-shirts,
jerseys, had the shoes.
My room was completely decorated
after they won
and things with the metal of the land's logo.
Had the metal trash can,
signs on the wall,
the blanket.
I still own like 20 pieces of clothing
that have the Metallands logo on it.
Billy, you were like one year old,
but 96 was the year.
It doesn't get better than 96,
at least for me.
And the nostalgia was strong this year, right?
With Pope coming back.
and the bus and holding up the trophy.
Mark Pope averaged 20 minutes a game on that roster,
average 7.6 points per game.
So a contributor, a guy that was an effort and a captain.
Late in the game, they were showing his family on TV and the crowd.
I went and watched it on YouTube recently.
Pope hit knocked out some free throws,
and his parents were getting some TV love on the broadcast.
And when they went home, they probably listened to
because you loved me by Celine Dion.
I bet they were playing that on the bus of Celine.
Rolling into Rupp Arena.
Let's knock out one more call.
before we go to this break.
I got Joe up next.
Joe, give us a year for Corey and then whatever you have on your mind.
Corey, 1952, which city held the SEC tournament.
Oh, that's a completely different game.
I would guess Louisville and the Jefferson County Armory, but I'm not sure.
You're exactly correct.
We're always proud Corey and Drew when the cast come to Louisville.
and from 1942 to
the SEC tournament was held
that historic venue in Louisville
so I'm being a proud Louisville
and I was always happy to tell my
wildcat friends that don't know that fact
that Louisville held the great SEC terms
from 1940 to 1952
and in those 10 years of Kansas won three
championships NCAA championships
that's pretty much it y'all have a great day
thanks a lot appreciate the call
always good to hear from you
Candice won in 1952 as well, by the way.
Who they beat?
Some team not named Candace.
Put them on the spot here.
I didn't say I knew both teams.
That's okay.
That's okay.
You're still doing a great job.
He's not that much of a genius, just mostly.
He got the SEC tournament.
He did.
Well, that's a good guess.
Before we go to our break, let me tell you about VOA Midstates.
It's part of Volunteers of America.
That's VOA for short.

Go to VOAMMid.org to learn more.
We'll take a quick break. Two more titles. We'll try to get a few more phone calls.
And that'll be it for Monday here on KSR as we start a week without the whole crew.
This is Drew, Bill and Corey. We'll be right back.
Last night, a blown call changed a game.
This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying.
And nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
That's where Sports Slice comes in.
I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise.
Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines.
We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves.
their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear.

From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down,
give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered.

What's up, guys?
This is Clifford Taylor the 4th.
And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of
stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this guy, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, Brett, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Ms. Parker.
Listen to the Cliverts show on the I Heart Radio app,

Agency, the ability to know that we're the experts in our own body.
On the podcast, cultivating her space,
Dr. Dom and Terry Lomax create a space
where black women can show up fully and be heard.
I wholeheartedly think, you know, you hit 30.
You shouldn't have to share one with anybody.
Mm-hmm.
From navigating friendships,
healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health.
These are real honest conversations.
We don't always get to have out loud.
Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right?
Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them?
Absolutely not.
During one meal, I'm standing.
I'm standing and handing my children food.
Because healing, empowerment, and resilience aren't just ideas.
Their practices.
And this Mental Health Awareness Month, there's no.
better time to pour back into yourself.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night bases on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball like,
after you go through a training camp
with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Welcome back in.
Final segment of Monday's KSR.
I've over-programmed, Billy.
We've got to go fast.
I have like an hour's worth of topics,
callers, and we're only in a few minutes.
Corey, let's just get right to it.
What's our next title?
Just give us a few fun facts.
most of us remember these last two.
98. They were 35 and 4, ended the season on the 13 game win streak.
Number 5 in the final AP poll.
Third of the country and field goal percentage defense.
Scott Padgett was the only All-American.
Jeff Shepard, his son was all right, was the final four most outstanding player.
Six future NBA players.
And, of course, they defeated Utah, 78, 69 in the national title game.
Eat at Utah.
Really, I remember that one.
and most of us remember that one for beating Duke and the elite eight to get there.
Fun game.
And Billy, just so you can eat it, Cameron Mills, if you're listening, eight points in the championship game.
Would you like to tell congratulations to your buddy Cameron?
That was a big year for Cameron.
Eight points in 12 minutes, Billy.
Saw him hit that shot in the bathroom.
Every time I went to the bathroom at the IHeart building in Lexington, I saw him hit that shot versus Duke.
So very well aware of Cameron.
I don't need to know about your thoughts of Cameron Mills in the bathroom, but that was a fun one in 98.
Moving on.
I'll do 2012.
I was there in New Orleans, Kentucky beat Kansas,
and really all you need to know is that Duran Lamb had 22 points.
7-12 shooting from the field.
Anthony Davis wasn't the star.
He took the fifth most shots.
John Caliperi will tell you that.
Duran Lamb, my guy, led us to a title.
Y'all remember that one well, right?
Where'd you all watch it?
I was in New Orleans about as high up in the Superdome as you can get.
In fact, on our live blog, I said Duran Lamb for three,
and someone wrote Drew, that's Kyle Wiltsier.
I'm like, well, I'll ask you your aunts down there,
but I was happy to be in the building.
They do look alike.
I was at B-Dubs in Louisville, actually.
Did you burn anything down?
Say sure you got crazy in Lexington.
I did not bring anything down.
Billy, where did you watch 2012?
At the house.
So nothing eventful there.
But I was in the state of Kentucky at that point.
So starting to figure out how much college basketball means to this state.
Beat those stupid Louisville Cardinals when their infrared jerseys.
I will say.
I will say.
And the finals, Dave was said 16 rebounds, six blocks, five assists, three steals.
Statute stuffer.
Yeah.
What did Cooper Flagg and Zion Williamson?
doing their national championship games.
Exactly.
Zero points, I think.
Put some respect on Anthony Davis, ESPN.
And Anthony Davis won a gold medal before his NBA career.
Tired these damn rankings not putting him first.
Corey, one more.
Who won in 2013?
Ooh.
Well, if you go by the record book, nobody won in 2013.
That's our Whiskey Thief tweet of the day.
It's supposed to be a call of the day.
But Tyler Toon on Twitter X, whatever it's called these days, he asked that one.
So that's our Whiskey Thief Call slash Tech.
of the day. Shout out to Whiskey Thief.
Love Whiskey Thief. Go check them out in Newloo, their new location.
Let's knock out some calls quickly, Rick. Who's up first?
Brian is up first.
Brian, thanks for calling in.
Hey, Brian. Hey, guys. Yeah, I was actually the guy that took the pick with Pope here in San Antonio.
Oh, give us the scope. This is a great call. Whiskey Thief Call the Day, Part 2. Carry on.
Yeah, me and my son, we were hanging out there in the convention center lobby when he came through and was on the phone.
and he was on the phone so we didn't want to really bother him.
We kind of got in his field of view, and he saw we were, you know, wearing our UK gear,
and he just put his finger up and said, wait just a second.
And then he went over and kind of was on the phone for about, probably about 15 minutes.
And I could tell he was kind of frustrated, you know, on the call.
And then he got off the phone, walked over to us, said, you guys want to pick?
And we're like, oh, yeah.
So as he's taking the pick, eras, we're getting ready to take the pick.
You know, he picks the phone up and makes a call.
And he says, our boy is out.
And then, you know, someone said who?
goes, you know, TBB is out.
And, you know, he was on the phone, and I said, I know it's, I know it's a busy time for
you, coach, but we real appreciate, you know, these few seconds, then he heads on up the escalator
to where the NABC coaches are.
And so really gracious with his time.
I hate that, you know, we've got those pick under those circumstances, but that
picks kind of went viral a little bit.
Someone screenshotsed it from the, on that bridge, and my son, he got some messages this
morning from Instagram.
They're like, no way, I guess a Bama site had the,
reposted and said, you know, we're 4-0 against UK this year.
So, yeah, it's great, a lot of buzz.
Was it, I mean, a lot of people have a picture of Pope smiling.
Being in the arena, being in the arena when Duke choked was, that's great, man.
I mean, their fans were just shell-shock.
I mean, that's made the entire trip, just, you know, getting experienced that.
So I just want to get that in there, too.
Thank you.
We appreciate the call.
pretty cool to hear from the person with the famous viral photo.
And I think you're right what you're about to get into.
Not a lot of photos of Pope not smiling out there.
Yeah, would you rather have this with a story?
You know, years from now, lots of people have a smiling photo.
You have one to tell.
Yeah, you'll be able to say that he didn't get this player and still take a photo with us.
All right, Rick's counting me down.
My apologies to the people still on hold.
I obviously am not great at managing time on this show, but we'll get a lot of calls in tomorrow.
Thank you for listening today.
Thank you to Corey Price for helping us learn a little bit about those teams.
We had to rush through those.
I'll get better at this tomorrow.
Tomorrow I'm at the bar.
I'll be there Tuesday, Wednesday, and most likely Thursday.
I'll keep you updated on Twitter at Drew Franklin, KSR.
I have my dear friends, Jack Pilgrim and Stephen Peake coming in to talk more about basketball.
They went to all the road games, pretty much every game.
We were in indie together, Milwaukee together.
So tune in tomorrow.
We'll do more basketball talk.
But for now we're shutting down for a 22-hour break.
Thank you for listening.
This is Drew, Billy, and Corey Price.
Have a good Masters Monday.
Those people are starving for banter.

Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's
telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode,
we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you
the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves,
their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear.

Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing, and honestly, just kind of lonely.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the psychology of your 20s is breaking down the science behind the biggest roadblocks we face.
I was six years into my career, the 80-hour weeks, and just the first one in the last,
went out and I ended up burning out.
There was a large chunk of my 20s that I like was just so wanting to like be out of that
phase out of my skin and I just like really regret not living in the present more.
You don't need to have everything figured out right now.
You just need to understand yourself a little bit better.

Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
