What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
A rep.
My mama want you to wave at her.

Now here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome in, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles.
It is the Thursday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio is Thursday, April 17.
Ryan Lemon and Drew Franklin and Shannon the dude here.
As always, Kentucky Sports Radio, sponsored by the great T.J. Smith,
law office call T.J. And what happened, Shannon? He'll make them pay. We'll have our
whiskey thief call today on the Clark's Pubbing Shop phone line, which is 859-280-2-8-7. We've had a lot of
really good calls this week. And we'll also do the, what's our other one we got to do? A-vision glass
text machine. Here we go. The A-vision glass text machine is my cell phone. By the way, it blew up
all night people saying, yeah, there's a Mark Pope in Paducah. There's a Mark Pope in Cadiz. There's a
Mark Pope in, you know, Highlands.
Well, you didn't give me the right number yesterday because that guy had no idea what I was talking about when I called and said this is this Mark Pope.
Well, there is a Mark Pope, but apparently he's in jail and Corbyn.
This poor guy, you just keep calling out for being in jail.
Got a lot of stuff we're going to get to today, but I think everybody's kind of anxious and is doing to talk about the one pressing topic right now.
What's that?
You said you opened up your script and you're ready for your play to debut.
We're going to lead with Romeo and Juliet?
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah, we had a rehearsal.
last night. Lots of fun.
Uh-huh. It wasn't it, it wasn't a dress rehearsal, not in costume. Um, more of just a walk
through meeting everyone. Love the cast. Lots of nice people. Uh, we did like a, we got in a circle
and did some voice warmups. Oh, you did. Yeah. Professional stuff. Yeah. We went around. You had to,
you had to say your name, what you do, and your favorite hobby. And then everyone says,
welcome, say your name back. And then we had to act out the hobby for everyone. So that was
pretty fun. The guy next, I was going to say golf, but the guy next to me,
said golf. So I, at the last
minute, said I like to do cartwheels, just to see if anyone
would attempt to cartwheels. It didn't work. But yeah,
that's how we got loose, got warmed up. Maybe before every show, we should start
doing that. That's not a bad idea. Get the vocal
chords going. One thing I did learn, though,
it's, you know,
I got to hold the sheet for the line, so no pressure on this one. Everybody was
holding their sheets. But I didn't consider there's
a lot more to know. Like, there's
like six different entrances, and I enter at
different parts and exit at different
parts, where to stand on the stage.
A lot of things I didn't consider.
So there was a lot of information I had to take in and things I've got to learn before,
I guess, a week from tomorrow.
A week from tomorrow.
So how many lines do you have?
I'd say it's probably about 10 to 15.
I'm in like two big conversations.
But the big thing, spoiler alert, if anyone doesn't know how Romeo and Julia
ends, let's turn down the radio.
You got you.
So I have to die at the end.
In the final scene, I'm in a sword fight.
Last night I didn't have a sword
So we were just doing it you know
Air swords
Yeah
But one thing I didn't know until I got there is I lay on the stage and I'm there like the whole scene
People are stepping over me
I'm just staring up at the lights
So I'm I gotta I gotta practice dying
I'm gonna watch some old horror movies
Kind of learn the slasher movies kind of learn how to die
Because you know that's it's a big role that I that I'm taking on
I thought I just had to rattle off a few lines
But I have to actually die in front of everyone and stay there for
They're a big part of the show.
What a spoiler.
Spoiler alert here.
I know.
Sorry, everyone.
Paris does.
I want to come watch you die.
You can please.
Likes and Children's Theater.
Go get tickets.
Well, if you need some advice, you know, we have a professional actor here on this show this morning.
He can kind of help you with, you know, delivering your lines, how you're supposed to die.
Help me, Shannon.
Have you ever had to die?
Yeah.
In the OVW ring, just about every time I step in there.
But no, you've got this, man.
I was talking about you on the pre-show.
I know that you're going to be over-prepared.
and you're going to do just fine. You're going to knock it out of the park.
Well, one thing I did to prepare, I'm going to confess something.
Even my fellow cast members don't know this.
I went on Amazon and I bought, this is a genius move, by the way, patting myself on the back.
I bought like a quarterback wristband that has the plays.
And I'm going to wear it with my costume and I can just kind of flip that open.
I mean, it's amazing how much information those wristbands can hold.
So that idea popped to my head and Amazon got it to me yesterday.
So there's a change you can be up there.
the script. Oh, absolutely. I mean, I hope I don't need to, but if I get in the moment, I'm going to be
QB1 and I'll just flip that up and glance real quick. Because there's just one performance, right?
Yes. One show. One show. You better get tickets. You know, if you do need practice or some advice
about how to just lay dead for a whole show, you know, Shannon lays dead on his belly in the end of
Netflix for the rest of the insurance right there behind you over there. I like that joke a lot better
when I made it one minute ago.
But yes, that's true.
Well, the picture of you on your belly is like right over Drew's shoulder.
Yeah.
So we see it every day.
It's one of the best shot there.
But good luck, though.
We're proud of you, man.
Lexington Children's Theater, a week from tomorrow.
Yeah, there's still some tickets available.
It holds about 300 people.
Okay.
So I have to be dead in front of 300 people.
It is very informal.
I feel a lot more relaxed now.
Like, yesterday, I don't mind saying this.
As I was rehearsing, I had a beer in my hand.
I mean, they had some food and some.
snacks for us, a few beers.
So it's not that serious.
It's more of a comedy.
If you pull that off, have a beer on stage during the actual performance.
Now, that's something to be more about about about that.
No, I'm not going to do that during the performance, but to loosen up and, you know, it was a long night.
They took good care of us.
Also, I just, I guess I'm a creep.
I just aggressively hit on Juliet for all of my lines and get turned down.
Kind of typecast there.
859-2-287.
Matt will be back on Monday.
So I texted Mama Karen this morning, you know, got any update, and I can pass this along.
He's headed to New York tomorrow.
So he flies back to the United States tomorrow.
He'll be in Kentucky on Saturday.
They're going to have dinner on Sunday.
And then, of course, he'll be here on Monday.
You've got the whole family agenda.
There's dinner.
Yeah.
Well, I think a lot of people are asking, you know, how's it going?
We've not really heard out how things have.
He's checked in from time to time.
But I'm interested to hear his stories from up there.
Yeah.
So he sent us an itinerary for next week when he's back.
So we know we'll be here Tuesday through Thursday at least at the bar.
But, yeah, looking forward to having him back.
and looking forward to you driving for two more days.
Today and tomorrow.
Yeah.
And today we've got...
You ready? Why are you so dressed up?
I walked in and Shannon, he's got a shirt tucked in.
He's got some khakis, a button up.
I haven't looked like a slob sitting next to you up here.
You got a closing or something going on?
No.
I actually have a speaking engagement after the show.
Oh, no.
Speaking engagement.
Yeah, well, I mean, we made content out of my speaking engagements.
What do you got going on?
Well, as soon as I say this, you guys are going to make fun of me.
It's a convention at the embassy suites on Newtown Pike.
Okay.
About 150 engineers.
What are you going to say to an engineer?
My goodness.
Did they say like, let's find the opposite of an engineer in both here?
Yes.
So, uh, yoga girl and I researched a couple of engineer jokes.
I think I'm going to go with an engineer.
Let's try it out.
Try out.
I mean, we talk about me being in a play.
This is the real show.
What's a joke?
Give me your best.
There's one.
Lead with your best.
Well, of course, I'm going to.
I'm going to use the John Caliperi room full of timeouts joke.
That's a definite gimmie.
I'll probably use John Calipari taking the early exit joke.
Those will be used.
Okay.
Play the headset, I guess.
But here's my engineer joke.
Okay, you ready?
Did you hear the story about the three engineers who were driving in a car around New Circle Road?
The car had trouble and broke down.
Well, the mechanical engineer in the back said, it's got to be something mechanical with the engine or the torso or something.
Okay.
The electrical engineer who was riding shotgun.
gun said no no no it's definitely an electrical problem i can fix it well the software engineer was
driving the software engineer said listen guys all we got to do get out of the car count to 30 get back in
the car will start right up you don't think you don't think that's a good one i mean good luck
i mean that's what you're supposed to you know you unplug it you wait 30 seconds and you plug it
i'm with you do you need to borrow my quarterback wristband to write down your notes maybe so
how long do you have to talk 30 minutes you have to talk for 30 minutes yeah what are you going to
say after that you got you got you got you got to say after that you got
Here's what I say.
Any questions?
You guys got any questions about UK football or UK basketball?
So, yeah, I'm just trying to figure out, like, you've got to talk to engineers,
but you're talking to them about engineering or Kentucky sports.
Well, I plan on kind of poking fun at them a little bit.
We can tell.
Are they Kentucky fans?
Will they get the John Cal the Perry Jones?
They're from across the state.
Okay, so it's all Kentucky people.
Could be some Louisville fans, could be Indiana fans.
Could be some Tennessee fans in there.
I'm nervous for you.
I am too.
I think five minutes are going to pass, and you're going to run out.
of things to say. Well, that's where we open it up for questions.
And they got 25 minutes for question and answers.
Go to the phone line. Go to the phone line. Nothing else
just start naming all the Mark Popes around
the state. Well, apparently,
they are all, they are. I got text messages all night
long, where they found there's another Mark Pope.
Good luck. Well, there is one kind of
thank you. There is kind of one
news topic. I think we've got to get to here in this first
segment is that we've talked so much about the
UK basketball roster and the
making up the roster. Well, the
UK football roster got a guy a little
shake up yesterday with hardly
Gilmore coming back to the team he left the team enrolled in Nebraska has now left
Nebraska and coming back to Kentucky and I think we need to say he had a misdemeanor
assault charge against him when he was here in Lexington the first time and that kind
of led to his dismissal first go-round now they're inviting him back bringing him
back of course the receiver room needs little depth what's your take on
Harley Gilmore returning back to the Kentucky football team?
You know, the reaction has not been good,
and it's the reaction you would expect.
I mean, he, I don't think he got dismissed here.
I just left, but as you said, he had off-the-field issues.
Then he doesn't even make it through spring practice at Nebraska,
and they sent him packing.
So it just makes you wonder if Kentucky's all about repairing the culture
of all the people that are in the portal,
it does seem like an odd move.
It's really bad optics to add him, really,
as Stoops has been very vocal about how they're cleaning.
up that locker room and if you know it was rumored and reported that he was part of the
trouble in the receiver last year receiver room last year so i think it is an odd move i hope that
they've set him down and said look dude this is your final chance absolutely nothing can go
wrong you're gone you've now you've been at two stops this is this third you got one more strike
left i hope they're on a a very strict discipline around him because it it's it's not a good look really
Shannon, what do you think?
I mean, we just heard when, you know,
Stoops was last on this show,
how he's going to make, you know, a big emphasis
on cleaning up all the off-the-field issues
that we were talking about, you know?
Like the culture of Kentucky football.
And then you bring a guy back that's already got a track record.
It's not a great look.
I've got to be honest with you.
So if you bring them in, I think you've got to say
this is an absolute zero policy situation.
You do anything.
crossway, you're out.
You know, I don't know how you can,
if you're Mark Stoops, be taken seriously about changing the culture
if you're bringing back somebody that already has issues.
I think Drew's right.
I think when he left here the first time,
he didn't necessarily get dismissed.
I think it was mutual.
I think he got in trouble, kind of a mutual decision.
Hey, maybe he should look elsewhere,
and he did transfer into Nebraska.
But when Nebraska releases him or when he leaves Nebraska so quickly,
it makes you scratch your head a little bit,
why Kentucky would kind of bring him back when, like Shannon just said,
Stoops has already said he wants to change the culture
and bring it back to where it used to be.
The thing we don't know is what he was in the locker.
I mean, he had the off-field issue, and that's bad.
But, you know, with that receiver room,
I think one of the guys that went to LSU was a big part of the problem.
I don't know on the day-to-day how hardly Gilmore was behind the scenes.
Stoops would know better than anyone.
They have a new receivers coach.
In the two practices I've seen, that dude, he's not afraid to yell.
He seems to not put up with something anything.
So maybe they have him reeled in, but just the perception of it does not look good.
A guy that has now had two issues in two seasons, and you're bringing him back.
He's also very young.
When he committed here, he was like 17.
That's true.
So maybe he's done some maturing and growing that we don't know about,
but it doesn't look good on the outside as Stoops is trying to clean that up
and been so open about having a better culture.
Now here's a quote from somebody very, very close to the UK football program about Harley Gilmore.
He said he's really not a bad kid just needs to grow up.
He will be number one ride receiver this year.
He's that good.
Well, he's always had a lot of potential, and that's why I mention his age.
I mean, not to excuse his behavior, but he was a kid when he got here.
He was supposed to still be in high school.
Maybe he's matured and grown up, and it took kind of falling all the way down to the bottom
to realize he's got to straighten up.
Hopefully that's the case.
But it won't help the criticism around Stoops in that program right now.
I guess, you know, Stoops has also said he's open.
And Matt has even been open about giving somebody a second chance.
Maybe this is what this kid needs, Shannon.
He just needs a second chance.
Yeah, I mean, I'm for a second chance.
But, you know, Stoops is really sticking his neck out there for this kid, I feel like, you know?
Because what if he brings them back and then you have another issue, then it's, you know, it really looks bad if that happens again after his track record that we've already talked about.
But if he gets the right help, maybe he can not just be a better player, be a better person.
And maybe he can get that here at Kentucky.
Sure.
Yeah.
Hopefully they've had those conversations, and we won't even know if they did.
But, you know, they've had guys in the past that other schools didn't want to touch,
and they took them in and gave them an opportunity.
That's true.
I mean, we all liked Lynn Bowden, right?
You know, a lot of schools didn't want to touch Lynn Bowden out of high school.
That turned out okay.
Yep.
So you can only, I guess you just have to trust that it's going to work out.
But just the, as it keeps saying, the optics around it are pretty ugly.
So we got Drew and Romeo and Juliet.
I'm with a bunch of engineers.
And Shannon's still hanging out with Gene Mitchell down at Panama City Beach.
That's right.

Yeah.
Just because we...

Welcome back. Ryan Drew and Chan here on Kentucky Sports Radio.
I'm really worried about my engineering joke now.
You should be.
You guys didn't even chuckle.
I'm more worried about what you're going to do when you're out of content.
There's still 25 minutes to go.
You know, you can feel a good 5, 10 minutes on UK basketball.
Okay.
Five 10 minutes on UK football.
So when you say you're going to talk about basketball, you're just going to ask yourself a question?
You're just going to just start talking about the season?
Yeah, the roster.
You know, all these names that I now know who they are.
What's Mo's last name?
Mohamed Diabate.
There he is.
Yeah.
Somebody studied.
But Yellovich, I'm still not sure of his first name, how to pronounce his first name, Yelovich.
Andreas.
We think.
Yelovic.
I think if you say it like that, you're okay.
Jalen Lowe.
The one you know. It's true.
Jalen Lowe.
Here we go.
Point guard.
Look at this guy.
Cam Williams.
Did you stay at a Holiday Express last night?
I did stay at a Holiday Express last night.
We got a couple here that, well,
Anita's here all the time.
She's up here from Florida,
but she brought her nephew, right?
Your nephew, Jared?
Jordan.
He listened to the show all the time down in Florida
with his first time here,
so he will welcome aboard Jordan.
We should do shows in Florida.
That sounds fun.
Amen, exactly right.
And we will have a special guest coming up at 11 o'clock.
DeAndre Liggins,
who just announced a member of the TBT team.
He's going to join us.
He can't be here, so he's going to join us on phone at 11 o'clock.
I haven't talked to DeAndre Liggins since he left.
Have you?
No.
I don't even know that I've really talked to him ever.
I covered that team, so there was probably some post-game interviews and stuff,
but I don't remember him being on the show.
I don't know him well, but I'm definitely excited to hear from him and what he's been up to.
I know he's had a long pro career.
I think it's still going, and it'll be exciting to add his defense to the TBT.
That's what he was known for.
Well, they tried to get him last year, him and Duran both.
It just didn't work out with their schedules.
They both committed this year to be on the TBT team,
so their TBT team here in Lexington loading up again for this summer's tournament,
which we all kind of got on the bandway.
I had a lot of fun last year.
I had a blast other than being assaulted in the city of Louisville.
I had a great time.
Looking forward to it moving over to Memorial Coliseum this summer.
So DeAndre will be here at 11 o'clock.
Talk to us.
Speaking of former cats, though,
did you see what Tyler Hero did last night?
He has been on fire, not just last night,
but like his last 10 games,
this is the best he's played ever in his first All-Star year
and had another big one last night.
I was a little surprised that he had the season they did,
and they're even in the playing game,
but he put them in a good position last night,
beating the Bulls big time in Chicago.
He had 23 points at halftime
and was 8 of 8 from the field.
Didn't miss a shot.
Finishes, I think, with 38 points in the win.
Bam had a big game, too.
Those two guys, they look really good
playing out there for the heat last night.
Yeah, Bam had a double-double.
You know, we got it's on TV right now.
I'm looking at the highlights.
There's cats scattered everywhere,
but it's much easier to like the heat,
and well, even the Kings who played last night.
The teams with two cats, and that's probably the biggest, the two that are playing the best.
Yeah, the second game was the Mavericks and the Kings.
Of course, the Mavericks got Anthony Davis.
Yeah, that one's double.
That's had four cats in that game.
PJ Washington.
Those guys start together.
And then the Kings had Kevin Knox.
No, Trey Liles.
Trey Liles.
And Malik Monk.
And Malik didn't play last night, I don't think.
I think he was injured or something.
No, he didn't play.
But I wish Deerrin were still on that team.
I love them together.
But Anthony Davis, with a big statement.
The Mavs have been a joke ever since that trade.
That GM still with one of the worst moves of all time.
But I hate that Anthony Davis has to be part of that punchline.
So I'm glad he had a good game last night with about 27-ish.
I think he had 27.
Yeah.
So good for AD.
PJ, I think he had 17.
Yeah, he might have been the second leading score.
PJ was a huge part of their run last year to the finals.
He's the big piece there, so I'll be rooting for them also.
So that era from 2015 to 2000, Cal, I mean, well, okay, let's go.
go back. The 2015 team had nine guys, I think, that played in the NBA. And there's still what?
Carl, Devin, and Trey Liles, are the only three left still playing?
Playing in the NBA. Yeah. Yeah, I guess that'd be about right.
Well, that is 10 years ago, 10 seasons ago. Yeah, I mean, they had some good careers in there.
People forget about the team that had Knox, Nick Richards, and Wynion. I mean,
that team didn't have a lot of tournament success, but that team was loaded with the
Well, Shea was on that team, right?
Yeah.
How don't I leave off Shea?
Shea led the NBA in scoring.
Yeah, Shea, PJ Washington, Nick Richards, Wynion.
I'm going to pull up that roster to make sure we get this right.
But yeah, I mean, they were absolutely loaded.
And then the next year you get's when you get Tyler Hero and PJ playing together.
Yeah, and there's 16 Wildc...
And Sheldon Johnson.
Yep, there's 16 Wildcats playing in the playoffs right now.
It could be more.
Jackson's hurt with the Pacers.
He's out.
And Topin was with the Hawks, but he was on a two-way contract, so we can't play in the playoffs.
But there's a lot of guys still, Jared Vanderbilt with the Lakers.
That's a name we don't bring up very much.
He was on that team with Shea and Knox.
Here, I have pulled up.
Knox, Shay, PJ, Diallo was in the league for a long time.
It might still be in there.
Winning Gabriel, Nick Richards, Clay Jones, or he didn't make it Vanderbilt.
Loaded.
Well, that's six or seven guys off that team.
On a team that we don't really think that fondly of her didn't have much of a run.
they were stacked with players.
So they're just all over the NBA right now.
And even at the end of the year, you had guys get opportunities.
Keon Brooks was playing for the Pelicans with Brandon Boston and Antonio Reeves,
all on the same team.
So I know we've turned the page from that era,
but there's still a lot of guys to root for in the league.
And that last team, COVID had Maxi quickly,
a couple other guys that played very well in the NBA.
It's amazing that era you look back,
how many NBA players played here.
they never even made for the final four yeah there's there's that aspect to it i'm surprised maxie
didn't make the playoffs i thought the pistons were going to be or uh the sixers were going to be a contender
he and booker being at home this time of year feels weird as good as they are and as good as their
teams were supposed to be but neither one of them made the playoffs 859 2802 287 that's our
clark's pump a job phone number so who we got first shannon let's go to jean jean yes sir i'm
jean mitchell lexington kentucky and i thought it's funny because i'm a singer
also I've sung in nightclubs at TV and
I was singing to Miss Lexington
contest for two years in a row
Nick Clooney was the MC
had a show on
Top Teen Tunes back in the late 50s on
WLAX with Ronnie Thompson
I was a singer on that show
and I've sung in Mickey Mantle's
place in Dallas, Texas and
so I've done some singing around
also so I thought it was really
really funny that
his name was Gene Mitchell.
My name is Gene Mitchell.
I wonder if he copied my name from somewhere in the past.
I bet he did.
You should call you two together.
You could have double jeans.
I'm 88 years old now, so he might have seen me somewhere, like in hot springs,
because it was like a casino back then.
You know, back in the 50s, early 50s, before Fulbright became the governor,
it was like a Vegas.
It was like little Las Vegas.
They had casinos and stuff.
I was at the Tower Club there for about six months, singing there.
Stay on hold.
We've got to go to a commercial break.
Stay on hold on.
Shannon, see if you can figure out a way we can play some of his stuff.
If he knows a way we can find it or you can send it to you or something.
We want to hear this version, this Gene Mitchell.
So we played the other Gene Mitchell yesterday.
Well, good.
Thank you for calling in, sir.
We appreciate that.
It's nice to talk to you.
Thank you.
All right.
Yeah, Shannon.
See if you can figure out a way to get some of his stuff and play that Gene Mitchell.
I don't know.
When I Google,
Gene Mitchell, only one Gene Mitchell
pops up and it's not that guy.
Well, that's why maybe...
It's our Panama City, Gene Mitchell.
Maybe he can figure it out
and the way to send you something.
I mean, he played in Mickey Mantle's club for crying out loud.
It's true.
Maybe I've got to form a band together.
Well, take our break.
Come back.
859-2802-287.
Kentucky Sports Radio.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J.
He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio
presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
Can we say what just happened?
sure we can say whatever we want during the commercial break shannon this guy comes up and asks drew
can i shut down the internet while i work on i'm here with the network guy i need to work on the
internet it was a hard no hard no for me drew's like uh we have a show we're doing the show right now
kind of important kind of important this happened a couple weeks ago when matt was here yeah
it was like 10-01 we're going to shut down the internet wanted to work on the internet connection here
with our equipment i mean we're all four-year
that improving the quality of the internet here, but maybe not during 10 to 12.
Of all the hours, this is not the one.
You can maybe wait until 12.30.
But they always show up between 10 and 12, always.
Why is it when I need people to come to my house and fix something, they never show up?
They're three hours late.
Had a guy show up at 9 p.m. last Friday, which was fine.
He did good work, but I had been waiting since 4.
859-2802-287.
That's our phone number.
Shannon, did you get some songs from the other Jean Mitchell that just called?
in. No, I can't find his, like there's no track record of it on the internet. There's nothing there.
And I didn't get an eight track or anything from them, so no, it's a no-go.
I know his son, he texted me, and I said, we're trying to find music, and he said, no chance.
So if the son doesn't think we're going to find music. Barry, Barry Mitchell.
Oh, that's his son? Barry texted in. No way. Yeah. Is that our Whiskey Thief text end of the day?
That's a whiskey thief text end of the day. I like that. But I would like to hear Gene's music.
Well, if anybody knows how to get a hold of this music from this Gene Mitchell, we'll play it for you.
I was telling you during the break, I like that we can find an alternate Jean Mitchell,
but we can't find the alternate Mark Pope.
Oh, there's plenty of them, according to the texters last night.
859-2-802-28-L.
Let's get on the phone call.
Who we got, Shannon.
Richard.
Richard.
Richard.
Good morning, gentlemen.
You can play as a pros.
How in the world did we not win the national championship that year with those two kids?
That was the only thing I beat by Auburn in Kansas City?
Hero hit the game winner to beat Houston.
Houston, the beginning of their little tournament success they've had in the last five, six years,
Hero put them away.
Another one, fellas.
Have you heard anything in the portal about Eaglestaff or Tyson?
I know on the Internet it was showing Kentucky was looking at them.
And I'll hang up.
All right, good to hear from you.
Is there an update on Eagleson?
Eaglestaff.
Eagle staff.
He committed to South Carolina and then just decommitted.
this week after two weeks, I think something like that.
Yeah, he's a West Virginia guy.
Tyson they reached out to.
I don't know how serious that was.
There's new names popping up.
There's an international player that's now maybe in the mix.
So they're casting a wide net as they're looking for that last spot.
So Braden Hawthorne, I believe, is still on campus or he was yesterday.
He's the kid from Huntington Prep that our buddy Darrell from over there in Belfrey
has been talking about for a couple of years.
I actually saw Braden Hawthorne play in that game against Jasper Johnson's team over at Woodford County High School last year for the Alvis Johnson showcase.
How do you look?
He didn't have his best game that game.
You know, all the coaches were there.
Cal was there, like the West Virginia coach was there.
I think the Cincinnati coaches there.
North Carolina coaches were there.
They were all there sitting in the front row.
Jasper had an awesome game.
He had like 33 points.
Seriously, like 10-3s.
But the Hawthorne kid didn't have his best game that day.
Yeah, it's interesting that they'd go to a freshman.
I don't know if that would be to fill the role that they were looking
forward just with Wilkerson, but he was on campus and they're pursuing him.
I don't know much about him.
I hadn't seen him play in person, so your report is what I'll go off of there.
Well, the kid from North Carolina that Richard just mentioned,
he's not like a superstar or anything like that, right?
He's got a role player.
Cow actually reached out to him before the coaching change for Kentucky.
Oh, he did.
He hit the portal the first time.
So he's now been recruited by two different eras.
He was originally at Belmont.
But he'd be more like the backup guy?
Probably.
I mean, he would bring shooting that they need,
but I don't know who would win that job,
assuming O'Way comes back with O'Way and Lowe.
I don't know if he would probably be the starter,
but, you know, Jasper, he could play his way into it,
depending how he develops over the summer
and gets ready for college basketball.
That's the thing.
Jasper can shoot.
Man, you're looking for a shooter.
He can throw him out there.
I mean, he can shoot.
He can light it up.
The thing with him is we'll be able to defend right away in the SEC.
That overtime, they're not really known as locked down defenders,
but he certainly has the jump shot to be a big impact.
859-2-287.
Who's next, Shannon?
Wayne.
Wayne, go ahead, Wayne.
Hey, what I was calling about was you guys finally just mentioned him,
but they keep talking about needing a shooting guard.
And I've always wondered why no one has even mentioned Jasper Johnson.
I mean, it was like, okay, we got this kid coming in,
and we know it's going to be a one and done.
And he is a shooting guard.
He's proved that.
And nobody ever talks about him.
All everybody talks about is we need another point guard.
We need another point guard.
Well, that's what he is.
I appreciate the phone call.
Yeah, Jasper has the talent to someday be a superstar.
I really believe that.
Like Drew said, I think he needs to just get a little bigger, a little stronger,
a little better defender.
But they just posted a video of him in an overtime elite workout where he hit 22 of 25 three-pointers.
Broke the overtime elite record in that drill.
That's pretty good shooting.
Yeah.
22 of 25 three-pointers.
And the answer of why people want a shooter is because we're Kentucky and we want a perfect team and we want two of everything.
And that's the one spot where you could still add another body.
But, you know, we want the perfect roster and that's part of it, even though you've got great pieces all around.
It still want more.
12 guys that could all have a big impact, but we want 13.
We want more.
And who's not to say that Otega can get that hitch out of his shot,
and him be a knockdown shooter next year?
I think Lowe will develop.
If you look at Butler, he made a big jump in three-point shooting coming to Kentucky.
Lo had to play a lot of hero ball for a terrible Pittsburgh team,
so I would expect his percentages to increase too when he gets here and doesn't have to do quite as much.
I did see what we're talking about.
Cam Williams also.
I feel like we don't talk about Cam Williams,
because he committed in the middle of the tournament.
He can also knock it down.
Yeah, he's a guy that I think we do completely overlook,
especially with these new guys we just got.
Why not couldn't he fill that role?
I still love the roster as it is,
assuming Quaintons bounces back and he's able to play in time for SEC play.
I mean, I still would like to see him at a shooter,
but I really like what they've done so far.
I did see a former cat found the new home, Cameron Fletcher.
Where did he end up?
High point.
That's right.
High point.
So he went from Kentucky to Florida State.
for a couple years.
That's a guy
he played like three games here,
got in the doghouse,
and didn't play again
when Calipari was here.
He was a highly rated recruits.
The portal has had a lot of blast
from the past with Askew.
Jordan Berks was in there.
Remember Jordan Berks?
I was hoping somebody would just build
a Kentucky leftover team.
Dante Allen's in the portal.
Lots of them around there.
They could have probably had a pretty decent team
with all the guys.
Hugo is on the move.
Big Z was in the portal for a minute.
Yeah.
Hugo, I saw someone, I don't know if this was just someone being wishful thinking online,
but an Arkansas account was like, should Cal go get Hugo?
It's like, that'd just be a bizarre reunion there in Fayetteville.
Yeah, no doubt.
A lot of former cats floating around.
Who's next, Shannon, who we got?
Let's go to Paul in Minnesota.
Paul in Minnesota.
Hello, Paul.
Hey, guys.
I think I'm going to miss that about, I'm a big NBA fan.
And so I think part of what I'm going to miss is I don't think we're going to be putting as many guys in the
league. Well, obviously what Cal did was unprecedented.
But, I mean, I don't know. What do you all think?
Can we get one or two guys in the league every year with Pope?
It's a great question, Paul. Appreciate it.
Because, like, obviously, if you look at this year, if Kobe Bray is the only guy on a
draft board, maybe Otega can work his way in there, maybe Jackson someday can find a spot
there.
But there's no, they're not anywhere near a first round guy.
Can Pope get to the point where he's going to have some first round guys here?
Yeah, he will. Kentucky has enough NIL money to, even though the,
one they're building now. We'll still have to wait and see
he'll land a big fish
either out of high school or in the portal that has
NBA future. I think
we won't have the days of the green
room is just a Kentucky advertisement
every summer. We got used to seeing
Cowl bounce from table to table. I don't know that
Pope will ever get to that spot. It won't
be like it's been. But yeah, he'll have NBA
talent, just not nearly as much as
as Cal did. I mean, the guys we mentioned in the first
segment, some of those guys are now all-stars.
Maxi, he wrote, Carl Towns
has been an all-star. Devin Booker's been an
All-Star. BAM's been an All-Star guys. I don't know if we ever get back to that level again.
All-Star, that's pushing it a little bit. But I think we'll see plenty of NBA talent. Maybe second
round, maybe end of the first round. Might have a couple lottery picks over time. But times have certainly
changed around here. I forgot to even mention Shay. We mentioned how these guys are up.
In the MVP conversation. Yeah, no kidding. A guy that came here as a backup point guard to Quad A. Green.
I remember the press conference when we're sitting there because everyone had just a
assumed Quade was the point guard.
I believe it was Media Day.
I can almost remember the exact seat I was in looking at Cal when he's like, you know,
I might start Shea.
And at the time, we're like, what?
Because he had, I mean, he was a four-star, but he wasn't anything like what Cal had been
signing up to that point.
Wasn't a lot of accolades around him.
And then by the time the Louisville game rolled around that year, we knew exactly what
Shay was.
He was the star.
He was a superstar.
But at the time, we thought that was Quade's team in that fall as they were getting
ready for the year.
Well, it was supposed to be.
It was Quad-A.
and Shay was brought here as a backup.
Didn't quite work out that way.
Quadi Green went to Washington.
Whatever happened to him?
Is he still bouncing around somewhere?
I have no idea.
We've had some former cats go to Washington.
Keon Brooks went to Washington.
Keon ended up playing with the Pelicans in the end of the season,
so it worked out okay for him.
Yeah, but I don't know where Quate is.
That one didn't pan out.
I'm still upset with the shot he took at the NCAA tournament.
And they were down.
I don't remember the exact scenario,
but it was not the shot we wanted in the final game
for that team.
Was that his freshman year?
You're playing Kansas State?
Yeah, Kansas State.
He threw up a three.
I didn't love.
In Atlanta.
I think that game was Atlanta.
All right.
It's got another phone call, Shannon.
Who we got?
Let's go to Mark Anthony.
Mark Anthony.
Go ahead, sir.
Good morning.
Hey, Drew, to draw an analogy with
Roger's gemstones.
You had to bear the cross last week, and you've done good, boy.
You've done real good.
Thank you very much.
Appreciate that.
Yeah.
And when you're talking about Hardley Gilmore coming back,
first thing I thought
Wait a minute
How old is he?
Then you said he was 17 here
The first trip around
You know a kid can grow a lot
Between 17 and 20
I hope he's got his head
The right place now
And appreciate that Stoopsie is
Sticking his neck out for him
And uh
Buckles down and performs
And hey Ryan
You're going to speak to a group
Engineers
Yes sir
I'm jealous
I'm jealous
I've always wanted to know
What it's like to drive a train
I hope you find that and bring you back and tell us about that.
See, that's all the time.
I could use that joke.
That joke would go over a little better than my software engineer joke.
Write that down.
Take it through there.
On Gilmore, he was 16 when he got to campus.
And to your point there, I also would have been kicked off the football team if I were 16 years old running around Lexington with everything.
That's pretty young.
And you can make young, immature mistakes.
Yeah, we would be talking about me getting in trouble.
I think a lot of us at 16 probably wouldn't have been ready to be.
in an SEC locker room.
Well, obviously, Stoops and Vince and the coaches that still believe in him as a person,
or they wouldn't have brought him back for what he's kind of the stubbed he's told a couple
time getting in trouble a little bit.
They wouldn't have brought him back if they thought he was a bad kid.
I remember Saban had a big rant that went viral about how giving second chances.
You can't just throw these guys away because they make one mistake.
So that's clearly the route Stoops has taken.
He just got to hope it works out and that the kid went far enough down
that he realized he's got to straighten up and get on the right path because these guys,
he has a ton of potential.
Shannon, you know what I want to tell you about?
Who's that?

He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.

All right, welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
Ryan Drew and Shannon.
Apparently Quade Green is playing in Mexico right now.
So we just go playing.
Get that little update.
But we just got to saw some breaking news, Shannon.
Running a nah!
After 38 years broadcasting and announcing college football pregame shows,
college football games,
Lee Corso announces his retirement after week one.
So he's going to do the first.
week, I guess they'll get his flowers, and then he'll step down.
College game day won't be the same without him, to be honest, in my opinion.
No, I mean, you think about him putting on that mascot head every week.
He's been a big part of it here lately.
You know, he hadn't been able to contribute like he did for many years, but it's been
kind of sweet watching Kirk Herb Street take him under his wing.
You know, he was always there for him.
Lee was kind of losing his words.
Kirk would step in and almost not a big brother because he's much younger, but it
It was sweet watching his last couple seasons, and it's going to stink seeing him go.
I'm glad we get one more week with him.
I don't know where they'll be, but people are going to lose their minds when he puts on the mascot outfit one more time.
One more time.
Shane, it's going to be kind of weird not having him there on the college game day.
Yeah, I mean, an absolute legend of the game.
And you're right, Drew.
I mean, Herb Street just taking Corso, you know, like you said, under his wing and taking care of him.
If it weren't for Herb Street, you know, maybe Corso would have retired a couple of years ago.
So I think we have Herb Street to think that we had Corso for the last couple of seasons on the pregame shows.
Now, do Seth Greenberg.
Just kidding.
Kind of kidding.
Also, some other news, the NCAA announced they're finally going to make some rule changes aimed at cracking down on fake injuries in college football games.
So they can't just all of a sudden miraculously be walking across the field and somebody signals for them to fall down and they fall down just to stop the clock.
Can't do that.
They're going to crack down on that now.
Yeah, it got out of hand.
It got out of hand.
Old Miss was really bad at it for being honest.
Kentucky did it several times.
It's just, it got hard to watch.
It was like soccer.
You just have guys flopping out of nowhere to stop the clock.
I'm glad they've cleaned it up.
And Ryan, why did all of Wayne County just walk into the bar?
30 people just walked in wearing Wayne County shirts.
Did you book a Wayne County party?
What is it for?
I'll have to go find out.
Yeah, who are you talking?
Do we just talking to air right there?
I thought he was looking at me.
He wasn't looking at me.
Oh, no.
I thought the guy was looking right at me.
Way over there.
He was talking to yourself out loud.
We're good to have Wayne County in the house.
They just rolled in deep.
And one more kind of breaking new subject.
It looks like Amaliva.
Amalava.
Nico?
Transferring to UCLA.
Somebody got him at a cheap rate.
You thought it would be one of the bigger schools that could probably at least spend some money on him?
I don't know if he's going to get the $4 million he was wanting, but he's going to get something because it's UCLA.
His brother was there and just transferred out.
So that's weird.
You'd think of his brother left UCLA and the family might be done with you.
UCLA, but I guess not.
And I saw that they said part of the reason they left Tennessee
was they didn't like the offense.
I think as a quarterback, you would like Tennessee's
offense, but whatever. Good luck to him.
I still think it's a terrible move. There's no way
he's getting what Tennessee was paying him.
And it hurts Tennessee, because their backup quarterback,
I think, left during the portal season.
So now they're down to, like, a red shirt freshman
being their number one quarterback, I think, right now.
Oh, they'll still somebody. I know Hypo's saying,
oh, we like the guys we have, but with the portal being back open,
you'll see a name go in.
Yeah.
And we'll all know what direction he's heading if it's a big-time quarterback.
Probably already taken care of because the second portal just opened.
So we may see that announcement come pretty quick that they've signed another quarterback.
Tennessee has all that money Nico didn't get.
They can go spend and get a big fish somewhere.
So UCLA?
It's not in the SEC.
You can't transfer in the conference.
So, you know, Calzada, bowling, they can't touch any of those guys.
But I'm a Liva.
I'm a Lava.
I'm in Laiva?
Just call him Nico.
Nico.
Yeah.
Go it like you know.
I think the reports even yesterday were he's probably got to go to a Juco or smaller school
and then make the jump to a Big Ten school or a bigger school.
But UCLA reached out, I guess, and they worked out of deal with him.

I guess UCLA caved, but I can't imagine they're paying what he wants.
