I'm Matt Jones here in studio in Lexington. You can give us a shout on actually hold off on calling until 1030 because we're going to have a guest here and so I don't want you to have to hold that whole time. So just hold off.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Ryan, I see you're on there. You could just wait. If you want to wait, you can, but otherwise try back at 1030. A Vision at Autoglass Text Machine is 772-745254. In this edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smithlaw office. You call T. I'll make them pay. Ryan Lemon, it's Brandon Garrison time.
Starting point is 00:03:57 BG Day. It's BG time. By the way, that's saying, I keep seeing it online. What am I missing? It's Brandon Garrison time. Is that a thing? Oh, it's a long been a thing. It's the kind of quote, like, it's Brandon Garrison, Tom quoted by Brandon Garrison.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Like he's calling his own number. No, I know. But like, did he say it one time? No, I think the internet just ran with it. You know, Brandon sometimes when he's in, he likes to call his own numb. Yeah. So it's BG time. I'm going to shoot this and I'm going to punch you in the face.
Starting point is 00:04:24 And I think that combination is endeared him to fans, right? There's no doubt about it. And when he was all muslin up in the Oklahoma game, we're all like behind him. Like, yeah, you go, girl. I didn't say you go, girl. I never said that. I don't think anybody went, Shannon, did you hear anybody say you go, girl? No, only right.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I didn't hear anybody say that. But it is going to be exciting. He's going to come in here. Now, he's going to be in here in like five minutes or seven minutes or something. So we're going to take an early break so that we can have as much time with him leading into 1030 as well. So this segment will be a segment. This segment will be a little short. shorter than it normally is.
Starting point is 00:04:59 All right. So Billy is sitting in here too because I have good news and bad news. Uh-oh. Okay. So let's start with Mario and Drew know this news. So let's start with Ryan. Would you like Shannon and Billy and Ryan do not? Would you like the good news or would you like the bad news?
Starting point is 00:05:19 I want to start my day with good news. Good news. Yes. Let's hear it. Good news. KSR has been invited. to something that I don't even know what it is, but it is called the Barstool Bet Gala,
Starting point is 00:05:36 sponsored by Draft Kings. Yes. In Scottsdale, Arizona. A black tie event. Oh, wow. It's going to be like the Met Gala, but it's the Bet Gala in Scottsdale, Arizona in just 10 days. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:05:54 And KSR has been invited. That's the good news. Isn't that exciting? Yeah, absolutely. Exciting, Ryan? I've never been to Scottsdale and heard everybody to most of the most of the most beautiful places in the country. Would you like the bad news? It was the bad news.
Starting point is 00:06:06 You're still not going to Scottsdale. Boop boop-boop-y-do. I cringed as soon as he started talking. Only Drew and me and Mario are going. I got you. I'm going to give you a hug, Ryan. Ryan, I can see on Shannon's face. He kind of knew where this was going.
Starting point is 00:06:26 I'm sorry, Ryan. Ryan, I think even Billy knew. You didn't seem to know where that was going. No, I just hit me on the, you know, last time I did a Draft King's event with you guys, the old my house caught on fire. So maybe it's a good thing. It's true. Guard that house. That's a very good point. That is the glass. You'll still have a house. I still have a house. That's good. Yeah, don't get displaced for two months. I can live in my bed. So next, a week from Monday. So we're flying actually a week from Sunday. We just found out about this
Starting point is 00:06:56 yesterday. Wow. They're having this event. Do not know what it is. We're supposed to dress. It's black tie, but that doesn't mean a tuxedo necessarily. I think some of them are actually dressing goofy. Black tie encouraged the inventorses. But like I'm not dressing goofy. Like I think they're dressing like, you know, like a purple derby suit. The dumb and dumb are kind of, it's tuxes. I want to be safe. They were like, you can just be safe and dress up. But I don't really have any, I've got like business suit. So I'm going to have to figure something out. I would suspect since this is a Draft King's event,
Starting point is 00:07:32 they'll have like a big name entertainer there. There are, apparently, it's like all the barstool personalities. If you say Darius Rucker, I'm going to hit you. Why would you hit me? I didn't decide who's going to this. You already said I can't go to Scottsdale. Now I didn't decide who could go. They decided who's going, okay?
Starting point is 00:07:50 But it's like athletes. Yes. And then apparently a lot of 10s. TikTok influencers. I don't know any of them. Well, they read me a name of Shannon, like 20 of them. Yeah. Didn't know one, I knew one person on the list.
Starting point is 00:08:05 It was like 18 women, two men. I knew one person. You'll get to know him at this event. It was that girl from the fight. Do you remember that? The girl that came out at the fight. What's her name? Sydney, something.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Yeah. Sydney, something like, that's the only one I even knew. They were like, and these people are coming. I didn't know who any of those people were. So Drew and Mario and I had to get our flight yesterday. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to wear. I'm trying to figure out if there are a place in Lexington where you can look like a million bucks or at least $430.
Starting point is 00:08:42 But Billy, Ryan, Shannon, I didn't know how to tell you all. So I thought telling you on the air would be. That's fine. Perfectly fine with that. Shannon, I think you're fine with it. I would assume you're talking about a cross-country flight. Scottsdale, two days. That's actually good news as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, I knew you wouldn't want to go. That was good news and better news. I knew Shannon wouldn't care. I would feel like,
Starting point is 00:09:04 though, Billy, you and Ryan would like to go. Well, you said it was a who's who's going to be there. I didn't say it was a who's who's. I said it was like, it's people. They did say stars. I don't know why they want us to go. I really don't. You made him a lot of money. Okay, but I don't know why they want us to go to this. It's like a night of like they're going to live stream it and people are betting, hence the bet gala. But Scottsdale, have you ever been? Actually, you know, I'm pretty well traveled, but Scottsdale and TPC Scottsdale are number one on my bucket list.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Which gets me to what I wanted to tell you. And this, Billy, I'm going to do this with you too, but not here. I'm going to, if you want, Drew, buy for us to play a round at TBC Scots. Would you like to do that? Of course. I just said. Number one of my bucket list.
Starting point is 00:10:00 We get there. We'll do that Sunday afternoon. I looked at it. There's tea times. I feel like it would be a nice thank you for all your. Heck yeah. Thank you. That'll be fun.
Starting point is 00:10:08 When's your birthday? Dig it a little farther. June 12th. This will be like a birthday. Early 40th. Now, but Billy, I know you're a golfer.
Starting point is 00:10:15 I don't want you to feel like. I played golf last weekend. I don't want you. Hush. I don't want you to feel like you're not getting something. My jaw's on the floor right now. So in June. You and I will play the Royal and Ancient Tates Creek.
Starting point is 00:10:30 The story. They just aerated their greens. You're good. The TPC at Lakeside. You and I will go play and it'll be like it's the same thing. Okay. All right. I'll settle for that.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Can Mario come? Because I'd love to get a couple shots of us playing. Maybe we make it a little bit of YouTube video. If Mario, if Mario wants to come, that would be fine. By the way, is Billy on the female mic? because he sounds very feminine talking into that microphone. Is that the female mic? No.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Okay, let's not put Brandon Garrison. Your mic is not as good. Brandon Garrison was going to be on that. Ryan, you switch with me. Ryan, you'll switch because we need to make. He's here. Okay, so you go get him. Shannon, let's take an early break.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Ryan, I'm sorry you don't get to go to Scottsdale. Boopoop, do. It would have been nice. He would have been the oldest person at the event. He would have killed it with his $5 punt bets. Jeff Kings would have loved that. You would have been good at the punt bets, Except there's no funding.
Starting point is 00:11:23 You can have been like single. Yeah, or something like that. All right. We'll take a break. Brandon Garrison will join us. We'll be right back. This KS. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
Starting point is 00:11:32 This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying. And nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where sports slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies,
Starting point is 00:11:46 and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo SlicLife 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tript Fantine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it.
Starting point is 00:12:48 And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:13:04 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search learn the hard way and listen now. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:13:23 This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff, like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, A, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:13:41 Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. A rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam, it's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defining the odds.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:14:29 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:14:47 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball, like, You go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Here we go. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Now joined in studio for the first time by our man, UK returning player, Brandon Garrison. How we doing everybody? Yes. Brandon, how are you? I'm doing good. All right, you got to pull that microphone up so we can hear you there.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Yes, go. You're doing well? Yes, sir. Good. It is, you know, online. Everybody says it's Brandon Garrison time. Are you ready now for Brandon Garrison time? No, for sure.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Excited for this upcoming year. Excited to return and ready for the fans to show love again. True, look at that. Look at the, you got the chain. Oh, yeah. I mean, like he's. Got the fit going. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:45 So Brandon, we don't have a ton of time with it, so I just want to go into it. Made the decision to come back. Talk to me about why you did that. you know, nowadays people can go wherever they want, made a decision to come back here. No, for sure. I'll say it started with Coach Pope, you know, just his loyalty, his two-year plan that he talks about with me,
Starting point is 00:16:03 and, you know, it's going to be my second. What was his two-year plan? So when you recruited you initially, said a two-year plan? Yes, sir. So when he first came out to my house for the visit, we talked about two-year plan, not rushing the process, I'll say, and just knowing who I'm going to be playing along with,
Starting point is 00:16:19 like he brought him and told me the process with him and I'm going to get better with him just in practice and overall. So you always considered this to be a two-year process? Yes. Ever since he recruited me, that's the first thing he had brought up to me. Gotcha. Well, that makes sense. Now, you, you know, last year, well, let's talk about last year, and then we'll go into this year.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Last year, one of the revelations to me was that you could shoot, like from outside. Like, there was a period you were leading the team in three-point percentage. Has that always been a part of your game? and I feel like you feel like you got the freedom to throw it up there. Yeah, I'll say I'll always be able to shoot, but I feel like Coach Pope helped me, like, gain a confidence, I'll say, and just getting rest up in practice and after practice and stuff like that. But, you know, he told me just, as long as I shoot, I got to hold my follow through.
Starting point is 00:17:08 And if it goes in or not, he's not tripping on it. A lot of times with big guys, especially big guys who've not been given that green light before, they do look timid about it. I never thought you look timid about it. Is that something that like Mark Pope's, says, hey, if you're open, fire. Is that why you kind of have that confidence? Yeah, no, for sure.
Starting point is 00:17:26 You know, he likes to get up a lot of three, so he allows a one through five to shoot. But he says, as long as you own your shot, then he lets you shoot it and have the free will to shoot the three. He said at one of the postseason game, one of the NCAA tournament game, something like Brandon knows, like Brandon Garrison has the most confidence in himself, even if he shouldn't or something like that. What did you think of that? Oh, yeah, just, you know, he helped me build that confidence. And I feel like you just got to have confidence when you're out there on the floor. Like you can't overthink stuff.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And if you do, then stuff's not going to go your way. I'll say so. Just having a confidence on the floor or it'll help you out. My favorite part of your game is that you are significantly better than I was at basketball. But you have that because if that weren't the case, you wouldn't be in here. But if you, but you have like, I don't want to say a temper, but you're not going to take any anything from anybody. So you had the situation.
Starting point is 00:18:21 We saw you go at it with other players. We saw you go at it with the crowd. You seem to especially L's down against a little bit. You seem to especially, there's something about Oklahoma that seems to get under your skin a little bit. Talk to me about that. Oh, yeah, like everybody's seen, I just feel like, you know, me being from there going back home, you know, just excited to be there. Things got chippy. But I feel like it's just part of basketball.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Nothing just was intentionally done. But things got rowdy that game. And we came out with the dub. Just a part of basketball. I mean, they were, Amari Williams carried you back to the bench. I mean, it was, you got into it, right? Yeah, you know, just some words was, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:02 my temper was up. Wasn't really thinking. Do you have a temper? I'll say, like, just, not just like a bad temper. I say, but like on the court, you know, it's just. You like to talk trash? Yeah, yeah, for sure. I like to, I love that you talk trash.
Starting point is 00:19:15 What, what, does that, like, get you into the game to do that? I'll say it helps me, like, get going, you know, just. It's just a part of the game. Like, I don't even notice. I do it sometimes. I always been a type of player. Yeah. So when you played that game at Oklahoma,
Starting point is 00:19:33 I mean, those two Oklahoma games were unbelievable. And of course, Otega played there. I mean, was there just more juice in those games, both in the tournament and down there? Yeah, like I said, just me being from there. Otega used to play there. I feel like it just brung more juice. You know, Coach talked about it.
Starting point is 00:19:50 He knew how it was going to be. be. And I just feel like we all knew how the games go turn out and how the vibes and energy was going to be. When you look back at last season, what are going to be the things, you know, when you're 25, Pope always talks about when you have grandkids, you're going to talk about this. He says that all the time. What are going to be the things you remember most about last year's season?
Starting point is 00:20:10 Oh, yeah. First, just the teammates I played with, how they taught me a lot of things, how we connected. Just, you know, our first year going, making March Madness and going this deep as we did. So those are some of the memories. What's your favorite game? I probably said the Oklahoma game at Oklahoma. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:30 I think so. I think that's probably going to be everybody. All right, you got Colin Chandler, Trit Noah definitely coming back. Otega probably comes back. We'll see what happens with the draft. But then you got all these new guys. And we're having to learn who they are. What do you know about your teammates next year?
Starting point is 00:20:45 Oh, yeah. I don't know them all, you know. Go have to get used to them. Reach out to them is tough. But I coach was telling me some coming this weekend, so hopefully I can connect with them, you know, and just feel like they put together a group. Man, it's deep. Like, there's a lot of dudes. I mean, you, just like you, you know, had to battle last year with Amari, you're going to have, you got guys coming in next year, Diabate.
Starting point is 00:21:10 We got the, what's our, what's our Croatian's name? You always see. On the Reyes, Yelovich. Yelovich. Are you excited for that competition? Yeah, no, for sure. that's just one of the things Coach Pope talked to me about just having more guys in practice to go against. You know, we didn't have that last year.
Starting point is 00:21:28 So just having that this year, I feel like it'll make us all better. I mean, it's 12 guys. It's a deep run. Do you, I mean, I'm sure as part of your decision making to come back, you sat down with Mark Pope. What did he say to you about this year's team and about what to expect? Yeah, first he just brought up, I've got to get that leader role, you know, and just the group of guys he bring in. just teaching how things running around here, how the offense work,
Starting point is 00:21:53 and just all the little things like that we sat down and talked about. You're going to be the old man now. Yeah. Like it's you and Otega are going to be like, as Mario would say, the unks on the team, right? Are you ready to embrace that role of, you know, you're going to be the grizzle veteran that talks about, hey, over here on campus is this, etc.
Starting point is 00:22:12 No, yeah, for sure. You know, it's just another role I've got to step into, you know, since all the other guys is going. So I'm excited to step into the role. Do you, all right, so let's talk for a second about Mark Pope. All right. So when I see Mark Pope, I think he's, you tell me if these are all adjectives that are correct. He seems like really smart.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Is he really smart? Yeah, for sure. Just like yesterday we had a little meeting and he was just saying big words. I didn't really understand. You remember one of those words? I really don't, like, know how to pronounce him, I said. I like that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:45 He says beautiful a lot. Do you ever go, look at him and go, hey, man, not everything can be beautiful. It's just a part of him. I just kind of got used to it. And, yeah. So he also seems like a guy who has a basketball answer for everything. I mean, do you get that sense, like every situation? He's always got something new coming up?
Starting point is 00:23:03 Yeah, no, for sure. Just, I feel like just him being a coach and him playing basketball all this life. It's just a part of, you know, his nature. I love him, and we're close to the same age. And so, and I can say this because I resemble it. He also seems like he's a little bit goofy. and a little, I don't say dorky, but maybe a little bit.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Is that fair? Is that fair to say? Yeah, yeah. I'll say goofy for sure. Just, I feel like that's just a part of him too. And it just brings out his personality. Does it make you all laugh like when he does goofy stuff like that? Oh, yeah. Or at least all the guys used to laugh and make jokes. I don't know if it should make him feel good or what.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Oh, so is he the kind of guy you can give a hard time to? Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure. You know, he can take it, you know, because he gives us a hard time. So I feel like this past year, we gave him a lot of hard time just in practice, you know, film or just seeing them around,
Starting point is 00:23:56 walking around. What team, you know, for us, like Louisville, Tennessee, tend to be the teams that we rival with the most? Is there one team where you're like, I'm not going to say you hate them, but you're like, we've got to beat them besides Oklahoma
Starting point is 00:24:11 because obviously that was one? I'll probably say Louisville just because of a big rivalry, you know, and how you, I'd always been around here. So I'll probably say that. Could you feel that? Like when you played Louisville,
Starting point is 00:24:22 I mean, we want that game more than anybody. For you, it's just another team. But could you feel that like everybody's like, you've got to win this game? Yeah, no, for sure. You know, just since I got here, that's the first team they talked about. Like, they wiped all the other teams.
Starting point is 00:24:36 They just say, I got to be Louisville and Tennessee was one of them. So just when we came up on that game, I just felt the energy, you know, the vibes and how much it meant to win for the fans. And next year, those might be. two preseason top five teams because they're got a great line and you're going to play there. Do you have the L's down ready for the Yom Center?
Starting point is 00:24:57 I mean, I know, don't look at Deb over here. Just look at me. Like, do you have the like L's down ready for when we go to the Yom Center? Oh yeah, not for sure. You know, it's always L's down, I say. So no matter where we're at, I'm always having to. Always L's down. All right.
Starting point is 00:25:13 We always like to ask people who've been here. What's your favorite spot to eat at in Lexington? Um, like just quick meal or like whatever. Like if you, if I'm saying to you, we got, you got somebody coming in town. You're like, I'm going to take you to two restaurants. Where are you going? Jeff Rubies for sure and probably my loans. So you like that you like to dress up and get the steak thing.
Starting point is 00:25:34 Yeah. I wouldn't say like I dress up to go there, but like I like their food is very. What about something quick? What about like I got to go out? Where are you going? Probably hit up Keynes or Chipotle for sure. So you're kind of your check. Shepotla guy. All right, I'll let Ryan Limmon ask one question. Go for it, Ryan.
Starting point is 00:25:52 I'm going to ask you off the court stuff. I always said one of the greatest thrills in life is to be a dad. I'm the only dad here in the group. What's it like for you being a young dad having to juggle college, juggle playing, and what's your favorite thing to do with your kid? Oh, yeah, just me becoming a dad. I feel like it's matured me, I'll say, help me grow up faster, you know, and just being around him. It just always brings me joy. But everything to do with him, I'll say, is probably took him to the park because he likes to run around a lot. Like, yesterday it was great weather here, so he took him to the park.
Starting point is 00:26:27 How old is he? One and a half. One and a half. What's his name? Akari. Akari. Akari. Yeah. He was at the Oklahoma game when he broke out.
Starting point is 00:26:37 I saw that. That was a big part of it. That was a big part of it. When you were trying to, like, show out a little bit? No, for sure. You know, when he's there, just, I feel like I'm just playing for him. So just doing it all for him, I said. Well, I have to tell you, I mean, you were a ton of fun to watch this season.
Starting point is 00:26:53 I think the thing that I like the most about is the joy that you play with and the excitement that you play with. I'm sure when you came here, you heard, tell me what you heard about Kentucky basketball, and now that you've experienced for a year, when someone asked Brandon Garrison, what is Kentucky basketball like? What would you say? Yeah, just what I first heard was, you know, just a picture where all the games sold out, Kentucky fans go ask for pictures, wherever you go. Is that annoying because you can't hide because you're tall?
Starting point is 00:27:25 I wouldn't say it's annoying, but like sometimes it can get like, ugh, like. But what I'll tell, like, somebody who asks me, it's just like they show a lot of love. You know, every game will be sold out and they're diehard fans out here. So just take advantage of it and meet as many people as you can. You, I mean, a lot of people don't realize, no offense to where you came from. There's a lot of schools that don't get. the crowds. When you know that every time you run out there, that arena is going to be full.
Starting point is 00:27:53 What's that like as a player? It's just special. I feel like it just makes you want to get out there more, you know, and just excited for the game, you know, because I came from a crowd where it wasn't like that. And some games could like, you know, you got to have your own energy. But I feel like just having the stands packed out, they bring the energy for you. So you ready, right, when you step out on the floor. You feel like, you know, one of the dude you played against.
Starting point is 00:28:17 could be the number one pick. You feel like you could take Cooper Flagg, like if it's one-on-one, just, you know, you think you got even if it happens because you might go first in the draft. No, yeah, for sure. I'll say, I could take one or more. I ain't going to say I'm going to lose anybody, but, yeah. Yeah, that's good. You know, we were in Seattle with that comeback against Gonzaga.
Starting point is 00:28:36 That's my favorite win of the year. Kentucky fans packed Seattle, packed Atlanta for Duke, go on the road. What's it like in all those environments to just see Big Blue. nation everywhere. Yeah, no, for sure. Just seeing them out there, because I didn't know like they would travel all the way to Atlanta and Seattle and stuff. But just seeing them out there.
Starting point is 00:28:56 I feel like they helped us get that dub out there, both in Atlanta and Seattle. Well, it's great having you. Good luck on next year. I'm sure we'll talk to you again. Let me know where I can get that necklace because I got to step up my fashion game. Brandon Garrison, thank you very much. Appreciate the time. We'll take a break.
Starting point is 00:29:15 Be right back. This is KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Nice job by Brandon Garrison. Thank you to him for coming on. I thought he did a great job, Brian. I actually thought he killed it. It's so much better when you get these guys off the court and he doesn't have to be superstar Brandon. He's BG Brandon. You know, to get him as a guy. And I thought he did a fantastic job. It's hard. You know, you know, it's hard to lot some of these guys like it's not the easiest to get him to talk but i thought he opened up and did really well and so now uh ready for a year too i think i i love that he
Starting point is 00:29:58 just plays with his temper just out you know i i think that's the only time i see the uk people get nervous when you talk about that like that's what i love about him like that's what he does you know yeah deb over in the corner we're talking about the l's down in oklahoma and all that i could see you get a little red you know they're media trained to not say that and let's be As long of these don't go well, the guys don't like to talk. He was great. Even off the air, very friendly, thinking us on his way out. He's talking about places to eat with Mario.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Yeah, great, great personality. I always knows places I don't know exist. Like, he's talking about some Jamaican place that, like, how do you know all these places? Like, you know, you just, there's like a, like, there's like a, he just has a way of knowing all this stuff. And the moment you said it, he knew it. Brandon knew it too. Just unbelievable. One person writes, you can open up the phone.
Starting point is 00:30:45 859-280-2287. Shannon will open it up. One person writes, Matt, I think they would have invited Billy if he was nicer to people and Ryan if he was more consistent. Well, may be fair. My heart did break more for Billy than me when you said you're going to play at TPC Sawgrass. I could just see them looking at his eyes. Scottsdale.
Starting point is 00:31:04 Those are different. Yeah. We played at TPC Sawgrass too. We played at TPC Sawgrass at the Gator Bowl. Yeah, that's right. You guys did. Did you play in that? No, I did not get to go to the Gator Bowl.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Okay. So, yeah, we've played. a couple of those. But I don't worry, I'll play with Billy at some point. Billy plays Valhalla just regularly, so he gets to see some good golf courses. Didn't we do, we did a show there. Didn't we do TPC sawgrass that morning? We did. That was where, because Mark Stoops and then were playing, Mitch played golf there, I think, as well. So yeah, 859-28027.
Starting point is 00:31:35 Let's talk for a second since Brandon was here about this whole, uh, portal situation. Okay. So the portal rankings, they're kind of all over the place for Kentucky. We've seen people rank Kentucky going into next year as high as like number three. ESPN has us number two. John Rothstein has us at like 13. And then there's still a lot of chatter about this $20 million number. I think I'm going to end up on an island of saying that the $20 million is not correct. But I still feel confident on my island.
Starting point is 00:32:10 Okay. Jeff Goodman came out yesterday, said he thinks it's 17 to 20. Now, I will note 17 is not 20, but he's like it could be up to 22. I'm very much still, it's significantly less than that. But that gets me to a bigger question, which is, do you care how much it is? Meaning like, if it's 17, 12, 22, does it matter to you? Does it factor in at all how you consider expectations or the 10? team or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:32:47 Doesn't factor for me one ounce, nothing. I mean, as long as we've got the money there and we can compete with other teams and we've got to buy somebody, I don't care how much we've got to spend. Does it change, though, what you expect of the team in the season? No. Maybe I'm weird that way, but no. What about you? I don't care.
Starting point is 00:33:06 I mean, if they were the 25th ranked team with money, people would be critical of a while can't Kentucky afford better players. Aren't you, Kentucky? Where's your money? So I think it's better to be spending the most than not. I will say it raises my bar a little bit for expectations. Like if you are spending the most, not really big, but like there is like, okay. But that's weird because you're always the guy that's like it's not my money.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Well, and I'm not saying they've got to win the title, but I mean, like last year, whatever they finished in the SEC, you need to be in contention in the SEC if you spent $20 million. Now, again, when the game start, I will not think about NIL again. But I do think going to the year, if you have one of the most expensive, roster, it should be one of the better rosters. Yeah, I understand what you're saying. I think it's very important.
Starting point is 00:33:52 There's going to come a time here very soon where we're going to know what the schools are paying these guys. Sure, yeah. Because it's going to be publicly released records as part of the revs year, but we don't know yet. So right now we have no real idea. I think there, as I said, I think this money, it's all agents saying the money.
Starting point is 00:34:17 I had an agent contact me yesterday and say, it is $20 million. And I said to them, I love you, but of course you're going to say that. And I said, well, and he was like, I'm just telling you, it is. And I said, okay, I'm not saying you wrong, but I feel more confident that it's not than it is. But I do wonder if it's going to matter to people. Yeah. Because like think about Mark Stubbs. People always bring up what he makes.
Starting point is 00:34:49 Right? That's a top point right now. They did the same thing with Cal. Yeah. Like we're going to pay you $10 million and. And that was money coming officially from the school. This is money coming from club in club blue and donors. I just wonder if you're going to put a burden on the team by saying it's a quote unquote $20 million team.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Okay. I got to ask you a question. This was asking me yesterday. I thought it was a great question. question. I'm just going to use Jaden Quaiton's as an example. Okay. What if they've promised him 1.5 for two years? So it's three years and that figures into the $20 million total. Are we thinking... That's plausible? Okay. That's a very good point. Maybe people are saying 20 million, but they're taking an overall multiple year thing. Maybe that's what they did with Malachi Moreno. Yes. Maybe that's what they did. I don't know if Jasper Johnson would definitely agree to two years when he could go to the draft. But
Starting point is 00:35:42 But yeah. Maybe that's where the high $20 million is coming from. You know what? That's very plausible. I don't know. I just know that what they are paying for this year's team, I do not believe is that amount of money. I do believe, though, they're going to have either the highest or the second highest. It's going to be us or BYU that spends the most money.
Starting point is 00:36:06 And I think, you know, you ask us if it matters to us. And BYU spending most of their money on one kid. You said you ask if it matters to us. I think it matters to most fans to know that we're among the top in the SEC. We don't want to be buried by their teams. I think if we didn't spend the money, people will go, well, are we going cheap? Do we not care? Let's be honest.
Starting point is 00:36:22 The people talk about this, the national people, the Goodmans. They don't really know what to do because some of them are trying to be critical of not having money. But if we didn't have the money, they'd say Kentucky's going to fall behind. I think they're all confused on how to handle this. I think you're right. I think you're right. We heard Pope can't recruit. He's whiffing, whiffing.
Starting point is 00:36:38 Now it's he has too many people. Kentucky spent too much money. Well, which is it? Now, I don't know if this is true. I think we're going to find out in the coming days. But I heard the SEC was going to go in together and say, okay, of this $22 million you can share, we all as a conference agree to do 70% football, 15% basketball, 10% women's, like, whatever. I don't know what the numbers were.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Yeah. And that the goal was we're all going to do the same thing. I've heard that fell apart. And now every school gets to decide. Wow. So here's my question as Kentucky fans. If you're in charge, what do you decide? Are you, okay, here's the decision.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Let's say it's $20 million. Let's just make it a round number. You can spend, in theory, all $20 million on football. You could spend $17 on football, three on basketball. You could spend 10 on basketball and spend more than anyone in the league. But also remember, like St. John's
Starting point is 00:37:50 could spend all 20 of theirs on basketball because they don't even have a football team. What are you going to do? If you're Mitch Barnhart, what are you doing? What do you spend the money on? This is where I think Kentucky's in a bad spot because every other SEC team is football first and fans won't have an issue with just loading up on football
Starting point is 00:38:07 because that's the way they've been for a century up until fairly recently. Like Alabama, I think, we'll take a little dip in basketball because they'll want football to still reign supreme. But we've been basketball first for so long. You just can't throw football aside because they need so much money. They raise so much money. You can't just let football die. And then you have baseball, which a lot of these schools really care about.
Starting point is 00:38:29 Women's basketball. Like Kentucky, we want to be good at everything. So what do we do? I don't know the answer to that question. I really don't know what they can do. that will please everyone. And knowing Mitch Barnhart, the way we do, he's so emphatic about improving all of the sports,
Starting point is 00:38:48 not just one. He will disperse it to what he thinks is as even as possible, I believe. You won't get a patriotism. You can't lose basketball. Cannot. Not in this town. And I don't know what they're going to do. What if we find out Louisville is spending 40% of theirs on basketball
Starting point is 00:39:03 and we're spending 15? A lot of people will be mad about that. It'll be riots. It'll be riots. So I think it's going, I think it is going to be a very, very tough decision coming. Italian stallion. Go ahead. One time. Go ahead. Who are?
Starting point is 00:39:21 Hey, I'm a long time post-game show listener, but I really enjoyed y'all's copy yesterday about the all-time cow players draft me and my buddies did the draft of our own after listening to y'alls. And I wanted to call in and express my gripe that I had with Shannon, taking Devin Booker fifth overall. I would argue that Devin Booker is not a top five shooting guard of the Calera. I think you go Murray Monk, Defendantive 1 and 2, Ron Lamb 3, and then I'd take Reeves and Dillingham over him. And I'll hang up and listen to you all.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Shannon, what do you think? I actually, there were two picks that I severely questioned. One was Booker. Yeah. And honestly, the other one was Teague. Both of them were your picks. Well, part of it was, first of all, that I was, wasn't prepared because I didn't know we were doing this.
Starting point is 00:40:10 The second part was, I don't think I heard you when you said it's how they performed at Kentucky. So I'm just taking just best players overall as how I perceive them. I think if you look at everyone's teams and you said which one would be the best in the NBA, you would win. Because you had the best, because you had Towns, Booker, and SGA. Yeah. I was just thinking big picture overall best players in the Calera. I think if you took, so a guy, did you see a guy computer simulated our teams?
Starting point is 00:40:38 No, I didn't see it. A guy computer simulated our teams and mine won. Yeah. But I went two and one. Shannon went two and one, but I beat Shannon. Drew went one and two and you went one and two. But the games were all close. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:54 Like they actually had us all being pretty close. Well, I know I got a lot of flack online about my team, but I'm thinking I got the national defensive player of the year, guarding your big guys. Everybody thought I didn't have a good big guy. I got the best power forward. I got one of the top three point guards, one of the top. I got your team kind of stunk. I'm a 14.5 point favorite against your team.
Starting point is 00:41:11 Yeah, you're only covered. I'll shut you guys down. If this was real, it's me and Drew playing for the national title. It's basically my athletes versus his tough guys and shooters, and it's a battle. I'm meeting both you guys. And Shannon wins the third place game and you cry. No, I'm not. Starting point is 00:43:50 like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me he goes, hey ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:44:04 Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. I'm going to want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:44:22 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows.
Starting point is 00:44:40 without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall.
Starting point is 00:44:57 And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the fly. man, he running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball.
Starting point is 00:45:12 Like, you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tuggy Sports Radio. Biggest snubs yesterday.
Starting point is 00:45:30 Nerlands was our biggest snub. No doubt. By far. But Oscar went in the last round, right? So, like, Oscar going the last round, we just have had so many good bigs. Nirlin's a biggest snub. Nick Richards was a big snub. Casein Wallace didn't even come up.
Starting point is 00:45:46 Casein Wallace was really good. Tye Tye was really good here. Didn't even come up. Didn't even enter my mind. Rob Dillingham? Yeah, we mentioned him as a snub, but like he didn't come up. Didn't even come up. We mentioned Kelton Johnson after the draft.
Starting point is 00:46:01 He didn't come up during the draft. And even dudes like Nate Sestina never entered our minds. Right. You know. So it's just interesting. I'm interested to see what people would think. Here's what I'd like you to do. 772-7745-254.
Starting point is 00:46:16 I want you to, on the text machine, write me and say, you have 100%. Forget about the amount of money. 100%. What percent are you given to football, basketball, women's basketball, baseball, baseball. That's going to be the four that get the money. Right.
Starting point is 00:46:29 What are you given each percentage? If you're the AD, I'd like to see what people say. The SEC had proposed 70 football, 15 basketball, 10 women's basketball, or excuse me, yeah, 10 women's basketball, 5 baseball. That's what they had proposed. What would you do if you were in charge? I mean, you got to give most of it to football. I would probably maybe. Well, I want to see what they say.
Starting point is 00:46:55 Yeah. All right. And then we'll go through it. Ryan, go ahead, Ryan. Matt, I just wanted to tell you, I'm about to embark on what would probably be your nightmare vacations. What is that? I'm going to be playing pickleball on Pigeon Forge. Yeah, I don't want to hear.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Honestly, there's a clip, Shannon, I want you to find and make sure there's no cuss words. But it's Judy Jimstone talking about children. Okay, see if you can find that. Make sure there's no cussar. And I got my two toddlers. in the car for the next four hours. See, okay, think about that. Pickleball in Pigeon Forge with toddlers.
Starting point is 00:47:36 Go ahead and put me in the grave now. That would be awful. The only thing worse would be if you're going to Myrtle Beach. Matt, you don't want to return to serve, clean up a little vomit and then play a little mini-gall? No, or no, or go to the outlets. No, thank you. God bless you, sir. I wish you the best.
Starting point is 00:47:56 I appreciate the call. I want you to hear that. because this is how I feel. I almost did one of those videos where people like just use their mouth and they like just act like they're saying it. Let them sink to this when he finds it because that's how I feel. Go ahead, Bob. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:48:14 On your trip to Scottsdale. It would be a great trip. You see Camelback Mountain and Dizzy Dean. It was his home when he was cross. I probably will not see Dizzy Dean's home, but I am excited to go. You know, Bob, they say the most beautiful. people in the country are in Scottsdale. And now we're going to be there to fit in.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Well, we played the World Series seniors back in the late 80s. We were there at Scottsdale. And they just opened the Phoenician, three 18 whole golf courses. Well, there's a lot of golf. So take your golf clubs. And there's a story with the Phoenician, but I'm sure you don't want to hear it. That's okay, Bob. it's good to hear from you.
Starting point is 00:49:00 I hope you're doing well. I haven't heard from you a while. You doing good? Well, I'm going to turn 92 this year. Nice. Rockstar. Bob, if I, you, uh, I'm halfway there. So I hope I can meet you one day, all right?
Starting point is 00:49:17 Well, you go out to hurry because I'm going to turn in for another 90s. Thank you very much, Bob. I like Bob. 92. Still going. And calls regularly. He talks about Dizzy Dean. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:29 I like the name Dizzy D. All right, do you have that, Shannon? No, I can't find it. You can't find Judy Jimstone talking about children? Mm-mm. I don't know if Judy Jimstone ever say anything when she didn't cuss, did she? I don't think she cusses in this. She can find her Sunday and tell me and I'll play it.
Starting point is 00:49:43 All right, I will. Dennis and Richmond. Go ahead, Dennis. Football fan, then you have to donate 70% like the SEC says. If you're going to stay competitive. Actually, my call was about complaining about this budget for the basketball this year. This is a problem with Kentucky football for years. This is the program here and the fans have not wanted to give their football program
Starting point is 00:50:10 as I have the basketball program. So there's no way, if Mark Pope does not win a national championship this upcoming season with being number one with the budget, then he should be ripped. Well, let me ask you a question. Who had a fan? Can you rip? All right. Hang on.
Starting point is 00:50:26 Who had the biggest budget last year in basketball? Do you know? You don't know. And you don't know who had the second biggest budget, and you don't know who had the third biggest budget, and you don't know who had the fourth biggest budget. My point is not to say you should know or not know. My point is to say when the game starts,
Starting point is 00:50:46 nobody remembers any of that. The answers to my questions, by the way, like the biggest budgets last year were like Kansas State, Arkansas had one of the biggest budgets, and none of those teams, Indiana, none of those teams even contended for a title. So I don't think just having the biggest budget, sir, is going to, like, guarantee anything in college basketball.
Starting point is 00:51:10 But, you know, how can anyone get on here? How can any fan rip Mark Stoops when I know his budget wasn't number one in the SEC for football? So how can you not rip him, but rip? Hang on, hang on. I love Mark Stoops, and I'm not ripping him. But don't you think we had a bigger budget than Vandy? I agree. Yes, he should have beat Vandy.
Starting point is 00:51:42 Exactly. So when people criticizing for losing to Vandy or losing by 30 to Louisville or losing by 30 to South Carolina, those are reasonable criticisms, right? Like, I agree with you. You can't expect Mark Stoops to beat Alabama, Georgia, et cetera. But you can expect them to beat Vandy. Yeah, I agree, but I mean, but 70, if the SEC, if they're proposing 70% of football, then Kentucky has to do 70% of football. If you even want to stay competitive.
Starting point is 00:52:17 That's a fair point. If you agree, let me know. We'll take a break. Be right back. KS. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
