Starting point is 00:02:50 It is Kentucky Sports Radio Tuesday. April the 29th. I'm Matt Jones here live at the KS Bar and Grill, where we are open. Well, I said all week. We're basically open all the time. We're closed Christmas Day. When else? Easter.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Easter. There's a handful of times. But most of the time we're open. Yes. And we are open today. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line. The lottery winner Clark's Puppet Shop phone line, 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-745254.
Starting point is 00:03:25 This edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. Call T.J. will make them pay. We got Rachel, our good friend here with Casey, getting ready. for how you doing? Nice to see you here on a beautiful Tuesday guys it is a little chilling here it is a little chilly air conditioning up today a little bit we may have to fix that but you know big day today it's Derby week but most importantly last night I went to Cincinnati saw my Reds beat your cardinals the summer of Ellie is is kicking in five straight wins for the reds
Starting point is 00:04:02 Here's a little stat for you. In the last 12 seasons, do you know how many times the Reds have won six straight games? Once? Twice in 12 years. Wow. Twice in 12 years. So this could be number three tonight if they win. It's beautiful.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I got my Ellie switch-hitting bobblehead. You did. Oh, nice. Yeah, so I missed the switch-hitting bobblehead game I was in the Netherlands. It's a bobblehead, and I don't really know what makes it switch-hitting. I think it's just Shannon, you can flip it around, and it looks like he's hitting left-handed. Just put the bat in the other hand. Well, the bat goes in one place.
Starting point is 00:04:39 They've just designed it to wherever. It doesn't, I don't really know. It looks to me like when he hits left-handed, he would not be being successful, but it's like a visual thing. It's a switch-hitting bobble. I've got to see this. So I now have two bobbleheads and ready to go. Well, yeah, last year, Billy risked his life to get that bobblehead for you.
Starting point is 00:05:01 last one there. So this year I called first and asked them to save me one. And they did. Well, I mean, I'm a season ticket holder, so they'll do that if you know in advance. You know, they're having Pete Rose Jersey Day. Yes, I heard that. May 14th, I think I'm going to sell that ticket because it's a, you know, it'll be sold out for Pete Rose. Everybody's going to want a Pete Rose jersey, and I don't really care because I wasn't, I mean, that was before I was a fan, so I think I might sell those. That's a heck of a promotion. Everybody comes because a replica Pete Rose Reds jersey. I mean, they're giving every one of Pete Rose jersey.
Starting point is 00:05:34 That's a heck of a promotion. That's got to be an expensive gift, Drew. Yeah, how do they afford all this? Is it your season ticket money? Ellie. That's a nice promotion. We're only paying Ellie $800,000. And he's, I have to tell you, right.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Now, of course, I say this now, and I'll hate the team in a week. But right now, I kind of love them. They're 16 and 13. They've got, obviously, Ellie. Yes. But they got new guys who are good. Austin Hayes and Gets. and Gavin Lux?
Starting point is 00:06:01 And, you know, some of the dudes I like haven't even played well. Like Matt McLean's hitting like 150. Spencer Steers hitting like 180. And yet they're still good because our pitchers, they've been grooving it. Well, I told you, we started. My dad's, you know, the biggest Cardinal fan I know. He's so upset last night. I think he called me three times.
Starting point is 00:06:18 And the last time was like, Red's going to sweep them. Red's going to sweep the Cardinals this week. Well, here's the thing. They had a big inning where they should have gotten more runs than they didn't. That's probably what made your dad. We walked like the first two batters. It was first and second. Nobody out.
Starting point is 00:06:32 He hits a little chopper, and the catcher makes a great play, throws him out at third. Next pitch, double play, and we get out of the inning. That probably made your dad mad. Was it a good crowd last night? No, there was not a good crowd. I'm kind of shocked. Perfect weather. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Beautiful day playing the Cardinals, but there was nobody there. Well, they didn't give the bobbleheads last night, but there was nobody there. I was kind of surprised. Yeah, I mean, this is the Summer Ellie. You think they'd be fired up by that. I think we were getting excited. In the NL Central, whatever the NL is in. Can I tell you what Uncle Matt did for one of our fine listeners?
Starting point is 00:07:07 Let's hear it. Why do you look so skeptical when I said that, man? You look like, what did you think I was going to say? Okay. There were these two kids, college kids, sitting in front of me. One of them looks back and goes, are you Matt Jones? His dad runs the Mr. Gatty's in. Campbellsville.
Starting point is 00:07:28 We always do the showtime. And he told me the story that these two guys, one of them lives in Campbellsville, the other one goes to UK, and they don't get to hang out with each other very much. So they were going to the game this week. And they said they both had kind of free weeks, and they were glad to catch up. Well, Thursday is a day game, and I can't go. And so I just said, well, would you all like to hang out again Thursday? So I gave them my tickets for Thursday.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Very nice of you to do that. So it was good, because they did that. Yeah. See what I'm saying? Uh-huh. They didn't ask. Because, Shannon, when people ask, that's not happening. You don't know what somebody wrote me the other day?
Starting point is 00:08:06 Tell me about it. This is a, literally, somebody wrote me, this was like two weeks ago. Hey, Matt, I normally never do this, but. That's how all the sentences are. Sure. What's coming? They all start. What are you getting right?
Starting point is 00:08:19 Ask for. I normally never do this, but. And I like, my answer is, almost always going to be no. But sometimes I at least understand. They'll be like, it's my dad's birthday, or my sister, her bat mitzvah, or something. You know, there's something, there's something happening. This guy goes, I've always been a big Red Sox fan.
Starting point is 00:08:46 First of all, not Reds. Red Sox. Wrong team. Man. Go to Boston then. The Red Sox are coming to town. Would you give me the tickets, or, I'm glad to pay face value.
Starting point is 00:09:01 No, they're negotiating. Well, first of all, thank you for your generosity at being willing to pay face value for what are probably going to be the most expensive tickets of the year. Thank you. I appreciate you offering to pay face value. But I just, I thought, I mean, like, really? You're really going to ask somebody to give you tickets for what is?
Starting point is 00:09:25 I mean, the Red Sox, those tickets will go for, 400 bucks a piece. Yeah, you can get a good chunk of chain for your seats for the Red Sox series. And for the guy to have the Cajonais to ask you, I'm the opposing fan. On the opposing fan. That's like writing me and saying, hey, Lifetime Arkansas fan. They're coming to Rupp Arena. Will you give me the ticket, Drew? I just, it's amazing to me that somebody can't do that. I would have at least lied and said I'm a Reds fan. I mean, you're asking to wear the opposing teams gear in your seats. They can be seen on TV. you'd be contributing to the wrong team.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Yes, I took a book last night. But here's how good the Reds are this year. I didn't read the book. Shannon, this is how exciting they are this year. No book. I took it in, didn't even open it at any point. If they were really bad, what book would that be that you would have been reading last night? It's a book I'm reading that I'm, it's a really good book, but I'm not recommending to the general audience.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Because I know if you all read it, like, I don't want to. you associating it with me. Is it very smut? What is it? No, it's not very smut. No. It was one of the New York Times top ten books of the year. It's called All Fours. This is taking a turn. I actually don't want to know anymore. Stop right there. I'm just saying to you, it's very good. I can see why it was named that. But I don't want when you read it, I don't want you thinking, well, this was a Matt Jones recommendation. We're on national TV reading all fours.
Starting point is 00:11:01 I thought, Shannon, I thought about that. I thought about it. If I were reading this book, the name cannot be showing. No, you can go viral. When I read it. Can I read what it's about? No, you cannot. People can look it up on their own if they want.
Starting point is 00:11:17 859-280-2287. We're going to take your call today. We did not do it yesterday. As I said, it's Derby Week. Derby Week. It's not just Reds Week. It's Derby. By the way, little suggestion.
Starting point is 00:11:27 the ribs. Why are you always at home during Derby Week? Like, why do they, every year they have home, like, why not have, like, that, I feel like that's, probably cut into their crowd? They're cut into their attendance, I would think. Like, why not be on the road during Derby Week? Anyway, you got mad because last night it went viral again, the video of you getting thrown on your back in the mud at the derby. This was what year? 1996. For people who haven't seen the video, a college kid just picks Ryan up, he's in a suit, and throws him in the mud, hard.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Yes. And it hurt your back. It did. And it's now been almost 30 years, and it still makes you mad to this day, doesn't it? Well, that was my very first Kentucky Derby, the member of the meeting with Channel 18. I bought new shirt, new pants, new, I knew suit. Still has them all. I was styling.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Still wears all of them. And I had been there for maybe, maybe 30 minutes. minutes. And I am upside down in a puddle of water and it stunk. You know, it was that old rainwater had been sitting there for a couple days. It stunk and I'm just covered in it. And I had to spend the rest, this was early in the day. I'd spend the rest of the day like that. So finally somebody felt sorry for me. He had a pair of jeans and an oversized t-shirt that he wore the rest of the rest. They had to do the live shot and jeans in a t-shirt. Wait a minute. He gave you, he had brought spare clothes. Yeah, punk, punk, because he was,
Starting point is 00:12:53 he was spending the night up there. So you were going to have to spend the rest of the day in the mud. Yeah. Yeah, and I did for several hours. And I think if I remember the story, the kid just ran off and never got caught. Disappeared. He was on television. Have you ever figured out who it was? No.
Starting point is 00:13:07 We even froze it where you can see his face looking right at the camera and said, you know, this guy owes me for dry cleaning and a chiropractor bill. Never hurt. Never got. Wait a minute. You put it on the air? Yeah. Oh, you did.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Yeah. You put his face on the air. But this was in Lexington, put it on the air. And, of course, that kid's probably from who knows where. So that kid is probably like 50 years old. Probably, yeah. So what would you think about, like, should we find him now? I would love that.
Starting point is 00:13:31 I would just like find out who it was. I have like facial recognition technology now. So here's what I would say. First of all, Drew, will you put out the video? Yeah, yeah. All right, so Drew's going to put out the video on his Twitter account. If anyone knows who this person is, I don't want this person to be punished, but 30 years later, it feels like they should come in apologize.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I agree. Yes. Because it hurt your back, right? My back was messed up for a couple years after that. hurt your back. Yes. It was muddy. It was stinky mud.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Now, he's probably just a kid that was having fun. Probably. Think about it. But maybe now as a grown-up at 50, he could apologize to you. And I think then maybe you could get some closure and laugh about this. Feel some remorse? I remember after I got up, I went straight to a police officer. Said, you're going to help me with this?
Starting point is 00:14:16 He goes, dude, where do you go? You know, they didn't. They were police officers. Two police officers standing right there. Watch the whole thing. All right. So Drew will put this out. Shannon, we'll let the masses decide if they're.
Starting point is 00:14:26 think they know it. In this entire state, I mean, remember when the Luigi guy killed the insurance guy, they found him at a McDonald's and Al-Tuna. So I feel like we can, we can do this. 30 years later, the dude may look a lot different. He's a big mussela guy in the video. But I'm saying, but like, there might be somebody who remembers Drew what he looked like then. Yeah. And you know, I watch a lot of Dateline. There's several way. New technology. True. Also, sometimes it's over-dictory. time criminals think, you know what, I've been living with this for 25 years. I think when we find him, they need to let me pick him up and throw him in a mud pud.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I don't think you probably could pick him up. I think that's, first of all, you couldn't do that. Secondly, he's 50 years old now, probably, so it might hurt him if you threw him in the mud 30 years. It hurt me when he threw me in the mud. So I hope you get over that, because it still seems to really bother you. Because like I said, I was so excited. My first derby, and I spend all day in a muddy, stinky, wet clothes. It was awful.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Awful. 859-280-2287. We touched on this yesterday. The Kentucky players were all in town, and I want to ask you a question about the roster because we have, well, there's a couple things. We'll do that when we return. Drew just put out the video.
Starting point is 00:15:46 See if we could find this man that 30 years ago broke Ryan's heart. We'll take a break and be right back. It's KSR. Last night, a blown call changed the game. This morning, the internet long. It lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
Starting point is 00:16:02 That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with So many incredible guests. I'm talking.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:17:45 What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This is a lot. linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out of my quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Ms. Parker.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Listen to the Clippers show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam, this Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about Define. the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:18:48 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We're back. Kentucky Sports Radio. Text machine 772, 7752.
Starting point is 00:19:35 7754. One person writes, Matt, I saw you at the game last night, saw you carrying a book. I actually wasn't sitting far from you and wanted you to read so I could take a picture and make fun of you, but I didn't see you pull it out the whole time. That's exactly right. I didn't because the game was so good.
Starting point is 00:19:50 He said it went fast, too, two hours. Reds are fun. They had, you know, they got all these young guys. The only dude they're paying a lot of money to stinks, which is Candelario. He doesn't even get in the game. He stinks. but the rest of the team is fun.
Starting point is 00:20:05 I feel a big comeback for the Cardinals tonight. I think we're not going to sweep them. I think we probably lose tonight. I mean, we have one going to one six straight twice and 12 years. I don't expect it to happen tomorrow. Last time you said this, I bet on the Reds because something about your lack of confidence. I think they're going to win again. I'm going to do it again.
Starting point is 00:20:21 You got to show faith in your team. I'd love for that to happen. One person writes, Matt, I read the description of the book you said you read on my work, computer and now you're going to get me in trouble. Oh, boy. Really? Huh. Yeah, again, I want to be clear. This is not my, I'm not telling you folks to read
Starting point is 00:20:42 this book. Don't point at me like that. If you read it, it's on your own. It's with a warning. Okay, so the players were all here this weekend. And I was looking at the roster. We have 12 guys. Question one, do you think we go get a 13th guy? I still haven't
Starting point is 00:20:57 gotten the call that Mark Pope is ready to come on the show, which tells me the roster's not finished, which tells me I think we're going to get a 13th person, but do you think we're going to get one? I think they could, yeah, I'll say they either had a high school or another international player. I think they're done with the portal. I believe they've even said that, but maybe add someone that's more of a project run down the road.
Starting point is 00:21:17 I don't think they need one, but I still think they will look to add one. See, obviously, and more towards a European player also, somebody that can bring in kind of work with this year, just kind of like a red shirt year almost, and then getting ready for maybe down the road. Why, European, though, if it's going to be a red shirt? Wouldn't a European be a guy like you have come play immediately? Like, why is he going to come from Europe to not try? Well, if he's like maybe like a seven-footer that really needs to be beefed up,
Starting point is 00:21:40 needs to get stronger, needs to learn how to play American basketball, that would be my guess. Okay. I assume they will use somebody. I think I would have heard if, like, because I think there's a good chance we'll have Pope in the couple weeks after the derby. So I would assume they get somebody else. All right.
Starting point is 00:21:58 do you think we have a final four roster? I see a lot of our fans seemingly assume the answer to that question is yes. And then some of the rankings don't even have us in the top ten. Like Jeff Borzello doesn't have us in the top ten. John Rothstein doesn't have us in the top ten. But then there are people like the field of 68 have us number three. So you don't usually see that wide discrepancy in how people see the team. Which one do you think is closer?
Starting point is 00:22:30 Top three, not in the top ten. I lean Final Four potential because I think they'll be in the conversation for a one seat at the end of the year. I think the SEC will be down. Definitely will be down. A big part of the tournament last year as we saw is retaining players. And I mean, you're going to have O-Way back, Garrison back, Chandler back, you know, we know the list. And then I really like the pieces they added to fix the flaws last year defensively. So if they stay healthy, I think they'll be a top two seed in the tournament.
Starting point is 00:22:57 What about the argument, hey, clearly we're better defensively, clearly we're tougher, but we gave up a lot of shooting. And last year, kind of our strength was shooting, and we gave up a lot of that. We have a lot of shooters that might be good, but we probably don't have any. You know, we came in last year knowing Kobe Bray was a great shooter. We knew Jackson Robinson was a great shooter. We knew Andrew Carr was a pretty good shooter. I don't know that we have anybody that you would say, okay, well, that's definitely a great shooter.
Starting point is 00:23:26 That's my concern, right? That's why I was getting ready to say that there's just not that guy that when we need hit two or three threes in a game unless O.A can figure it out this summer, figure he's shot out. I don't think it's the missing piece. I wish you'd got to knock down shooter. But we also, though, have four guys who can go get you a bucket, which we didn't really have last year. I think Jalen Lowe can go get you a basket. I think, you know. Aberdeen can go get you a basket. I think you could Otega can go get you a basket. So, I mean, I do think you have that.
Starting point is 00:23:56 Does that make it better for you? Yeah, I mean, they're going to be really, really good. And if you're asking me to pick top three or out of the top ten, I'm probably picking in the middle, like seven to ten. Those weren't the two choices. Yeah, that's what I'm going with. The two choices were. Well, those were not the two choice.
Starting point is 00:24:09 Obviously, picking in the middle would be the easy choice. The question is, if I said to you, they were either top three or like 11th. I guess I would probably take top three because I do think Otego will make a jump. I think Brandon Garrison was going to make a jump. I think Colin Chan are those three guys we talked about. They're going to make a jump this season. And you do have Drew nine or ten guys that can make a three, right? So just think about, rather than knock down, just think about guys who could make a three.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Okay, Lowe can make a three. O'A, Aberdeen, Chandler, Noah, Garrison. Jasper Johnson. Jasper Johnson. I mean, so I've just given you eight guys and then the Croatian kid. I've just given you nine guys that you know if you leave open can make. it and you know maybe even you know maybe there's even more but those those are the ones did I say Cam Williams that's 10 yeah I was gonna say let's he Cam Williams and
Starting point is 00:25:05 Jasper Johnson two the ones that the Batae shoot threes I don't he had I mean I don't know that you're gonna rely he's not gonna be like Almanore or he's just money when he steps out but he made a few of Bama I'm not as worried not everyone's gonna take a big jump but I think like a lower in Aberdeen you could see their shooting percentage go up and also last year they didn't not finishing top 25 you finished the year without Jackson Robinson, who's one of your best shooters. So outside of Kobe Brea, I mean, Kentucky's team, I think they shot 37% or something like that for the year.
Starting point is 00:25:34 It wasn't like a lights out shooting as this season winded down. They even had to play a little defense. And you didn't have Jackson Robinson at the end. That was, I agree. And still made the Sweet 16. Who do you think is the, because I think there's a definitive answer to this. But who do you think is the player that this dude better be good for us to be good? Do you have one?
Starting point is 00:25:55 Otega? Okay, yours Otega? Yeah. All right, what about you? I'm already counting Otega is good. I lean low or even Brandon Garrison. I'm going to say Brandon Garrison, just in case the acquaintance is a slow build. You know, Marino is still young.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I think if he's going to be the starter and the five, he needs to make a big jump to get closer to what Amari was last year. For me, we either make it or don't on Jaylin Low. Like, to me, we've put a lot on that kit. He's our point guard. He's going to be our primary, like, you know, offense starter. I think he's got to be good. I think he is good. But, like, you watch how he plays.
Starting point is 00:26:39 He is a high-volume player. I think they call the NBA a high-usage player, which means the ball is in his hands a lot. I think he's got to be good. I think he will. But, like, he's the one that we got at. And keep your fingers crossed. They get help.
Starting point is 00:26:54 Stay healthy at that point guard. not have another season we had last year. The good thing is they do have Aberdeen sitting there who could back up. So then Ottega did it a little bit. Chandler. I've seen some people saying Chandler can't do it. You gotta remember last year he didn't even practice as the point. He was like the sixth option all summer, all fall, and then even Perry.
Starting point is 00:27:13 I mean, he's, he's, you had Kerr and Lamont all summer. They practiced to be in that role. I think if Chandler goes in the summer knowing he's going to have to do some ball handling, he can make a jump there too if needed. 8-9-2-8-2-287. Who's first? Oh, the lines are open. All right, come on, folks. I'm ready to take calls.
Starting point is 00:27:32 And Shannon? Shannon probably nuked the lines. Did you nuke the lines? What I'd nuke the lines. You nuked the lines. Because, all right, there's a few. I want to talk to you. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:27:45 One more person, do you think the Croatian kid? Is he playing 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes? He's the one that's confusing. because I think Diabate is going to play a lot of minutes. You can maybe even play Quaintens at the four a little bit when he gets healthy. So it's a matter of finding him time, but I think he's very capable. I'll say he plays 15. By the way, did you see?
Starting point is 00:28:08 I hope he was going to play a deep roster with very similar minutes. Did you see the Stoyakovich kids going to Illinois? I mean, they literally are just taking the Croatian national team. And they have both Vich brothers and Stoyakovich. I mean, they basically are taking, you know, a national team on their roster. Our Croatian Yelovitch, she has a teammate that's now looking to go to college, and heck, Illinois might call him too. Maybe we'll call him.
Starting point is 00:28:30 Maybe we'll say. He's a shooter. We'll just become team college beta mass. But I would watch Illinois because they're collecting them. Illinois's going to be really good next year with those three guys. They can't beat us. 859-280-2287. By the way, they've got a whistler at these Reds games again.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Oh, no. Oh, no. Those people should be detained by law enforcement. We'll be right back. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Here's what's crazy. The guy asked me for the Boston tickets. We play them in Boston this year. So is he asking me two years in advance?
Starting point is 00:29:19 Maybe. The Yankees come here this year, not Boston. Maybe you thought when you were a season ticket holder, you get away tickets, too. That would be good. Actually, I've got seats behind home plate and Fenway. I'll take those. 772-7-4-4. By the way, Diabate shot 46% from three last year at Alibate. That surprised me.
Starting point is 00:29:38 I didn't know he was that good of his shooter. He must not take it that many. I looked it up, though. His freshman year, he shot 9%. Then he jumped to 46. I mean, we're looking at maybe potential record-setting season next year. So you're saying he'll jump that again, and then he'll shoot 83%. I mean, I'm just looking at what he's done in the past.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Think about the next year. The next year he'll make more than he takes. 9 to 46. That's a big jump. Big jump. Let's see, we got folks on, so let's just start. I've got a couple of other things, but I'll wait. Who's up first?
Starting point is 00:30:11 Estal. Estal. How are you, Estle? I'm fine. How are you? Good. I've talked to you before, and I really don't like all this fouling, you know, put people on the line, hoping to be.
Starting point is 00:30:26 they'll miss the pre-throw and it drags out the last two minutes a lot. Now they've gone to checking the clock, checking the time, you know, see if you've also the last couple of minutes who's really dragging it out. Yes, especially in college basketball. It takes forever. Okay, here's something I would like to them to consider. Of course, they won't. The rules committee won't. But we could go to 85. do away with all the time and most of the time and let's just go to 85. Look up the last three years and see what was the average winning score.
Starting point is 00:31:07 I mean, what would it be around 85? Yeah, so you're talking about they have this thing now. It's called the Elam ending, which is basically they play a game and then like with, I don't know what it is, four or five minutes to go, then they'll go, all right, 15 points from here. I agree with you, sir. I think it'd be better. But I think the bigger issue for college basketball, I appreciate the call,
Starting point is 00:31:33 is they've got to find a way to limit the reviews in college basketball. I mean, there's just too many. It needs to be like the NBA. You get a challenge, right? You get so many challenges again. You get like two challenges a game, and if you use them early, that's on you. Like, that's what, you know. And then you only, I think in the NBA, they only review, like, in the last minute,
Starting point is 00:31:51 and they don't even review foul. They'll only review clock in the last minute. We've got to do that because college basketball in the last few years, the refs go to the monitor on every play, and there's no reason for that. I've got a million tweets from Rupperino where it's just a photo. I saw I say, Doug at the monitor, here he goes again. And if you're a team that plays with tempo and it's late in the game, that can absolutely kill you if they're just constantly reviewing every little thing.
Starting point is 00:32:16 It just makes the game come to a crawl. You know, it may never happen, but I do like the Ilam ending because it's like there's a game-winning bucket. every single game. You can celebrate that one that gets you to 15. That is true. You do get that excitement of the game winning bucket regardless. Every single game. They made the basket, the TBT a lot of fun. I mean, Brennan Canada hit a game winner, free throw. When is the TBT, by the way? July.
Starting point is 00:32:38 It's in July? And it's at Memorial, right? Historic Memorial. That's going to be. Got some big commitments. I've heard of teasers of future commitments. I think they're going to have another good roster here. Yeah. They've got to do something about the reviews. The NCAA tournament, some of them were just brutal. That last couple minutes, it just goes and goes and goes and goes, and it's really annoying.
Starting point is 00:33:03 You know, an out-of-bounds play or a clock violation or whatever, man. But an out-of-bounce play, it needs to be close. They're to the point they review every out-of-lounds play. They just review it for the sake of reviewing it. Make them have a challenge so that the coach has to do. Like in baseball. You get one review. Right.
Starting point is 00:33:23 And you'll look, and they'll quickly, Terry Francona, I watch him in the dugout. He quickly looks to have somebody look, and then they'll just look at the umpire and go, you're good. And it's a fast pace. In college basketball, it's like they've gotten to where they'll rely on it, and they'll make the call knowing that allows them to go to the monitor. They're like, well, instead of me putting my neck out there and making a decision here, I just know we can all walk to the monitor together. And if they call the foul, so this is what happened in that NBA game the other night.
Starting point is 00:33:50 If they call the foul, then they're allowed to go to the monitor. But if they don't call the foul, then they're not, which gives them an incentive to call the foul, which is the last thing you want at the end of a game is the incentive to call a foul. They're just relying on it way too much because they know they can go to it for several things. There's no limit to it. Even though there might be some miscauls we'd complain about, they've got to go back to just bang, bang, make your decision, and then just a few challenges there to correct the bad mess. It's the same thing, by the way, with Gold-Tibbing.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Like they're allowed to do it if they call it, which makes them more likely to call it, which is not what you want. Who's next? Joe. Joe, go ahead, Joe. Thank you, gentlemen. Matt, as we wait for Coach Polk to make his final decision on his roster, we also are looking forward to Coach Brooks and our girls' team. Matt, is there a question of money on Coach Brooks if he just wait for next year to get more money so he can recruit a lot more place? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:48 So, you know, they had that one girl this year who was supposed to be their second best player who tore ACL to start the season, right? What was her name? Can't remember. Oh, God. So she's, I think, supposed to be our best player this year. And then they had a lot of younger people. I don't know if they're going to add one or two more players, but I've heard that the NIL situation for women's basketball is good. Good.
Starting point is 00:35:15 So I don't think the issue, Drew, is money if they don't have the players. I think they're going to have a good team with what they have returning. And then, I mean, you can't replace Georgia anymore, but they went and got the Tony Morgan point guard who was all ACC. I don't know if anyone's going to be what Georgia was. But it seemed like they did as best they could in the portal to fill that spot. But then you have key and Strack and all the bigs. They're back. Have you noticed all the national coverage Kentucky's been getting for the way they set up that athletics department?
Starting point is 00:35:43 Oh, they have. Oh, they've gotten a ton of it. A lot of national people going, wait a minute, is this the future? This is the future. And who would have ever thought Mitch Barnhart, who has been seen not just by the fans, but by me, as being like behind the times on this stuff, that they would be the one that would create the future of how these things will be done? Yeah, he's always been kind of a guy like, you know, like the alcohol sales. Let's wait and see how it works out at other schools.
Starting point is 00:36:09 NIL thing. Let's wait and see how it does at other schools. Now he's being proactive. He's the leader in this. Do you think he just hates the current climate so much? He's like, I've got to do something. I've got to step up because he was so initially to get into it. I want to give him his due, which is he takes a view,
Starting point is 00:36:26 and this is something I've heard him say many times. He takes a view that he really wants to leave things better than they were when he got them. And I think he takes a view. He knows the end of his career is coming. And I think he knows what happens in the next year or two is going to set up the next 20, and he doesn't want to leave a new AD with a disaster of a situation trying to figure out how you reorganize an athletic department. So I think that's why he's doing it, to be honest. Didn't he and Cal say about, wasn't that a big part of their little sit-down was leaving things better than they found it?
Starting point is 00:36:59 Yeah, and Cal left four days later. Well, half of them are falling through with that. But I will say he did leave it better than at the time of that interview. True. Which is things were better after he left than they were. during that interview. See, he followed up on his promise. And, you know, to be fair to Cal, the program was in a better place than it was when he got
Starting point is 00:37:21 here. Oh, no doubt. When he got here, it was a disaster. I mean, to be fair to Cal, that's a good question about coaches. Who's done that? I mean, Rick did it. Tubby, I guess it was a little worse. He picked it up at the peak, though.
Starting point is 00:37:36 It's hard to ask him to do more than he could. Billy made it much worse. Cal made it better. He did. and we'll see what happens with Pope. And then in football, Joker made it worse. Brooks picked it up big. Rich Brooks made it much better.
Starting point is 00:37:51 I think no matter what happens with Mark Stoops, you're going to have to say he leaves it better than it was. So I think that is not a bad way to measure success. A little hard for Tubby because Tubby got it at the absolute peak. With Cal, it could have gone very wrong in that higher after the way Billy took it straight down on the tank. But he picked it up quickly, so yeah, it can't be lost on us. That's why I think about the Cali
Starting point is 00:38:14 I think over time I'm going to kind of forget about these last three or four years And remember those first seven or eight years It's interesting we're a year away from him leaving And already people talk about Cal significantly less I think we had to get through it one year We had to get through that game We had to get through that game We had to get through the tournament
Starting point is 00:38:31 We needed him to lose in the Sweet 16 Same round as that's and I think it's going to be Much much much less of a story next year We need to beat him though We got to beat him We're going to beat him I want to. I want to meet him at Arkansas now. Have we found out who the guy is yet that threw you on the ground?
Starting point is 00:38:46 I haven't seen it. Okay. He's a mystery man. Starting point is 00:41:06 realize that we are in possession of the thing. and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?

Starting point is 00:41:51 Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rec, mom, I'm a one.
Starting point is 00:42:09 you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliffer Show on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast,
Starting point is 00:42:28 Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
Starting point is 00:42:45 We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
Starting point is 00:43:02 And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:43:22 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, I have a name. I'm not going to say it on here because I don't want to, you know, in case it's wrong. You say the first name? Yeah, somebody has given us a potential name. Yes. We have a lead. We have a lead.
Starting point is 00:43:43 lead on the throwing Ryan in the mud. Yeah, you think I could say the first name? Yeah, first name's generic at me. That could be anybody. It's kind of common. So the lead is a guy named Chuck. Chuck, he chucked Ryan. So if you know a Chuck, he's on our list of suspects.
Starting point is 00:44:05 Now, I don't know a lot of Chuck's. We were just saying, like, when's the last time you know a Chuck? You mentioned Chuck Hayes. I'm going to eliminate him. I saw the video. Clear. It's not perfectly clear, but clear enough to cross him off our lips. Chuck Knoblock.
Starting point is 00:44:20 Charles Barkley, they call him Chuck. Yeah, but he goes by Charles mostly. Chuck Knoblock, I think I can eliminate him. I have a last name. Chuck Norris. He could have done it, but I don't think he did it. Well, that maybe it was the way he kind of spun me around and whipped me up and threw me down. I have a last name, but I'm not saying it because I don't want to, I don't want to,
Starting point is 00:44:40 but if you know what Chuck, maybe there. that's, maybe that's who he is. Chuck Grassley? The senator from Iowa, he's 90 years old. This was 30 years ago. He had old men's strength even back then. Look at you knowing Chuck Grassley. How do you know Chuck?
Starting point is 00:44:55 I'm a big politics guy. Really? I would not have had you. I sit around just watching Fox News, CNN. I bounce back and forth. I would not have had you. YouTube TV multi-view on all the political channels. Get in there. Okay, 772, 7754.
Starting point is 00:45:08 Go to the phone in a second. By the way, Diabate, shot 26 threes for Alabama. year, May 12. It's pretty good. I like these chances out there. Nate Oates, I would have told him to shoot a few more. And Aberdeen, even though his season percentage didn't high, when Walter Clayton got hurt, he started five games,
Starting point is 00:45:27 and he shot 45% from three. So they just needed an opportunity. Let's start for a second about the Falcons defensive coordinator's kid. So Shador Sanders got prank called during the draft, and they said, hey, congrats, you've been drafted. and then it turns out it was a prank call. For reasons that I will never understand, the two kids that did it videoed themselves and put it online.
Starting point is 00:45:51 Why in the world would you do that? We're in a shirt with the school they go to to help narrow it down. In case you don't know who this is, we have an old miss shirt on. Of course it's two old miss students. What turns out, even worse, one of the kids, not the one calling, but the one sitting next to him, was the Falcon's defensive coordinator's son. So he got the number from the Falcons defensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:46:17 Now, the Falcons released a statement that said his dad left out the iPad and the kid got the number from the iPad. Question one, do you believe that story? No, I don't. I think the kid purposely got into the iPad specifically looking for Shadurdaer's number. Okay, well, all right. That's a yes. They do believe this.
Starting point is 00:46:41 No, I don't think he. He left it open. They're saying he left and just left it on the table. I don't think the argument is he left it on the table. The kid tripped and saw Shador Sanders number. I think the argument is, did the dad have anything to do with it or not? I mean, yeah, I'm sure the kid intentionally got Shador Sanders number. But do you believe that the dad's iPad was just sitting around and the dad didn't know about it?
Starting point is 00:47:06 Yeah, I can buy that. I can buy the story that I think I heard that he had left it on. And that's why the kid got the number. I don't think the kid broke into it. Do you buy? Yeah, I believe it. I mean, as opposed to what? He hacked the computer?
Starting point is 00:47:20 I mean, what's the other argument? Well, I mean, okay, maybe I'm the cynic here. But how many times do you leave an iPad on and it doesn't like get a lock screen up? I mean, I would think wouldn't the lock screen come up at some point? Some people have it turned off. Some people have it set a different time. Some people have it at five minutes. So, so let's, fine.
Starting point is 00:47:42 Who knew you all would be so true? You guys are usually the ones that are suspect. All right, well, let's say he didn't have anything to do with it. If you're the dad, Drew, what do you do? Now, your kid's 21 years old, but... Yeah, he's not a kid. He's 21. So what do you do to the sign?
Starting point is 00:47:57 Can you do anything? Do you, like, take him out of the will? Well, I don't know about taking him out of the will, but dad was a linebacker in the NFL for almost a decade. I even thought I would hate to be his son behind closed doors. That could have gotten him in a lot of trouble. Seems like the Falcons have, you know, obviously taking the blame off him. His dad just got that job.
Starting point is 00:48:16 It's a cutthroat league where you could get fired over anything. I'm going to assume dad did what he needed to do behind and handle that internally. You're a dad. You have a 21-year-old that does this. Let's say I have, well, let's use your scenario. Let's say you have Otega Owe's number. And your son calls Otega Oway and pranks him and says he'll be a first-round pick the NBA draft.
Starting point is 00:48:43 What are you doing? It's your first year on the job at this, at this organization. And the kid's 21. I mean, he's an adult. I mean, you can't take his PlayStation away or take his cell phone away. Are you going to scream at him? I'm going to, in screaming at that age, I don't think it works either. I think, but I'm going to make him feel so guilty and make him feel like an inch tall
Starting point is 00:49:01 about how he embarrassed me, embarrassed our family, embarrassed the organization. So let's act like you're giving me. I'm your son. All right. All right. And this has happened. you found out. Tell me what are you going to say to me?
Starting point is 00:49:15 Matt, look, I know you thought it was probably some funny thing to do, but in reality is you've embarrassed our entire family. I'm sorry he's not going to get it this time. I mean, you need to suck it up and understand what you've done. What do you want me to do? Well, I want you to listen to what I'm saying and stop talking back to me right now. Oh, is this funny to you, Brian? Is this funny to you?
Starting point is 00:49:40 You know, I saw it. You shifted to a new gear right there. You get in dad mode and everything changes. That was kind of scary a little bit. Jeff Gilstrap, the late Jeff Gilstrap told me, if you're friends with your kid, then you're not doing your job. They need to be scared of you when they're that age. But you're friends with your kids.
Starting point is 00:50:00 I am now. But your kids are seeing. One kid's still in high school. Yeah, younger than 21. Oh, I ripped him the other day. Well, I mean, do you want to say or not? Well, I can tell you, we were trying to go down to Panama City me, Shannon, we're leaving at one o'clock after the KSR, I get home, he's not there, and he hasn't
Starting point is 00:50:17 even packed. Oh, boy, yeah. What did you do? I laid into him, yelled at him. But I thought you were going to be, you just said, though, you were going to make him feel bad. Well, that was a 21-year-old. 18-year-old. I think I can still yell at him.
Starting point is 00:50:30 He's an adult at 18, though, too. Yeah, yeah. All right, so you yell at 18, don't at 21. Yeah. All right. Well, this is, I hadn't thought about what you said, Drew, which is if you're the employer, I mean, maybe you're not going to fire the guy, but it might hurt him with future jobs
Starting point is 00:50:45 because people will be like, can we trust this guy to kind of handle his business? Yeah, I mean, not to overreact to getting playbooks and stuff, but, you know, we try to keep things internal. How is your son getting one of the most popular names that have come through the draft in many years? How is he getting his personal cell phone number and calling him? Like, what else are you leaving open around the place?
Starting point is 00:51:03 That's a good question. Well, anyway, it's going to be awkward at the next family gathering with those. to. I bet son got his credit card cut off. So the son ended up, by the way, the son had to apologize. I saw that. They put the son in contact with Shador.
Starting point is 00:51:19 In reading the statements, it sounds like the son apologized, but Shador was not having it. I wouldn't have it either. It was very embarrassing. I mean, it was a live stream. Like, that's the one moment I did really feel bad for him. Like, you get your hopes up and you get excited, and then it's like a joke. And you get that opportunity one time. Well, he actually got it twice in this situation.
Starting point is 00:51:40 You know, I'm sure he got so excited when that call came through and he just ripped it from him. I thought the apology that he posted, I thought it was good. And I am glad he called and they talked to each other. I think that was a big move, big step. Yeah. I think Shador should get to- But he kind of got rewarded for it. He got to talk to Shador Sanders twice. But, well, man, you scared me.
