Starting point is 00:01:14 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:30 What? Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano.
Starting point is 00:01:47 It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming until he's like, you know I love you, dog.
Starting point is 00:02:04 You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. Call 859-271 joke or visit Comedyoff-Broadway.com. Comedy off-Broadway. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, May the 1st.
Starting point is 00:02:55 It is the National Day of Prayer. Did you know that? I did not know that. And it is also May Day here at. Well, it's May Day everywhere, not just here at the KS Bar and Grill, but we are at the KS Bar and Grill. Also, Billy's birthday. Okay, can I finish the intro? We'll make sure we go.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Clark Puppet Shop phone lines, 50257-11080. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-7452524. This edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office, you call T.J., he'll make them pay. Drew, I was going to say, after I did the intro, that today is Billy's birthday. He turned 30 early, well, I guess, at 1 at midnight. 30 years old for Billy, who's not in this building, but happy birthday to Billy R. Sports, the official grump of Kentucky Sports Radio. The GM also, we'll call him that, put some respect on his name today, but a happy 30th to Billy.
Starting point is 00:03:53 30's still young, you know, so he shouldn't let it get to him too bad. I heard him worrying about hitting a new milestone there, but he's still got a lot of youth left in it. Yeah, you know, we talked about this with him. Like, when do you start feeling old? Like, I don't think you start feeling old at 30. I don't think 30 is it. I think 40 is the age where you go, oh, okay, like, here we are. And then I think when you get to be like 42, things start to hurt more when you fall down.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Or, like, you wake up just with a pain, like, somewhere. So I think 30, you still got a bunch of time. Now, in Kentucky, people age quicker. Like, people get married at like 24 and 25. So I think sometimes there's a pressure to get married and stuff. What happened to you and I, Matt? Well, we skipped it. There comes a point, though, there comes a point where you miss it for so long, Shannon,
Starting point is 00:04:47 then people start to go, well, that's just. They can go, what's wrong with you, boy. That's what they say to me. You get to be 40. Here's what happened. They either decide he's like a perpetual bachelor, or they think you're guys. Like those are the things that happen. That's my life.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I mean, like, I remember when I was thinking about running for Congress. I had this political consultant. And they said, if you run, you know there's going to be one of two narratives, which is either that you date everybody or that you're gay. And I went, well, neither of those is exactly true, but at all true. But that's the way, Ryan, it happens. I, you know, I still don't feel like I'm old. And you're the opposite.
Starting point is 00:05:29 You get in a relationship every moment. I have not. There's not a moment you've ever been single. He loves hard. The ladies won't leave him alone. That's it. Like, you literally, when's the last time you've had a month of just complete singlality?
Starting point is 00:05:43 Well, I mean, I was divorced not just too long ago. Yeah, but it started quick. Yeah, but it was longer than a month. A month and a half? I mean, you just like being in relationships, is my point. Why not? If you find somebody. enjoy being around? Why not? And like, I do not. I'm 58. I don't feel like I'm 58. I don't feel like I'm
Starting point is 00:06:00 old yet, so. I feel like you're 58. No, I really don't actually feel like you're 50. I don't either. You don't act like I don't feel 58. So anyway, happy birthday to Billy who's now 30. So 30 years old. So Mario remains the last one in the tour. You're 25, right? 25. Child over here. The baby. He's young. I spoke at UK yesterday, and it was to a group of people almost off which were like graduating seniors. Uh-huh. And it's just, it's amazing to listen to them, like, ask questions about, and when I talk about how KSR started with them, they don't know, like, they're, they're like blogs. You know what I mean? Like, they don't even.
Starting point is 00:06:41 That's an old thing now? That's not almost even a word. Like, they don't even see KSR. The website is a blog. They see it like just as that's what sites are. Uh-huh. You know what I'm saying? Like, they don't, I don't even know if they use that terminology really anymore.
Starting point is 00:06:55 So are they more like doing the vlog, video blogs? Are they more than that? No, I mean, I just think they see it as a website. They don't see it as like, I just don't think people use that phrase blog. They're like, it's Kentucky Sports Radio.com. Because if you think about it, if you were to go to the Herald Leader right now or to CNN, it doesn't look any different than our site. I mean, it's all kind of the same now to especially younger people.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Yeah, I mean, when KSR first came around, it was something a little different. It was very different. They were like, whoa, what is this thing going on? Now it all kind of looks the same. Like you're saying, everybody's got the headlines that got to get your attention. All the stuff that the Herald Leader used to get on me about, they do worse. Like, I have to tell you, I hate the Herald Leader's Twitter account more than anything on earth. I hate it.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I hate it. Whoever's in charge of it, I don't like you. And I'm sure you're being told that you have to do it, but there'll be a headline that says, popular restaurant shockingly closes. You'd think that's how I wanted our area. Oh, no. Is it mine? What is the popular restaurant that's shockingly closed?
Starting point is 00:08:01 And it'll literally be in like Bozeman, Montana. And I get really, really angry at them. Why is this a headline in the Lexington newspaper? It's clearly because it worked. I clicked on it. Gets me nearly every day. Sometimes it might be a car accident or something tragic. I'm like, oh, that's awful.
Starting point is 00:08:17 Is that local? No, Seattle, Washington. I'm like, well, why are you telling me about what's going on there? I mean, it's sad, but I don't need to know about what's going on there. I'm looking for local. when the restaurant shockingly closed and it was in Montana, I almost filed a complaint. Remember the Lexington's oldest restaurant closed and it was the Arby's on Nicholas Miller? That was the headline.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I was thinking, oh my goodness, we're losing an icon, no, just Arby's. Yeah, anyway. So that's what's on my mind. It is Derby Week Thursday. I last night tried to figure out if I had something to wear. See, back when we used to go to Oaks and Derby, I've lost weight since then. So all those jackets and stuff, they don't fit. So I'm just going to be walking around in a monster jacket tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:08:59 So if you see that, you go, well, it looks like he's wearing his dad's jacket. That's what it's going to look like, unfortunately. Go to your place. Is it in Louisville? It's too late. I mean, you cannot buy clothes in Louisville, Kentucky two weeks before the Derby. It's all gone. Like people start, people in Louisville are weird, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:09:21 They start playing their Derby outfits in like February. wear you know yep and yeah you forget about it right now they are forget about if you try to go there they're swamped and like if you if I were to go into a store that sells suits now they would just tell me to go away like they're not they're not going to do anything so we have a 32 long if you would like that yeah yeah exactly so today is thurby today's thurby used to be Thursday was the day for local you've got you've got oaks used to be the locals day that's got taken over then it's thirdby and Thurby became.
Starting point is 00:09:53 It was a locals day. It's become a locals day. They also, I noticed, now have 5.0 Tuesday. Yep. 5.0 Tuesday. 5.0 Tuesday. And Wednesday. Wednesday. Oh, win.
Starting point is 00:10:06 W-I-N. Yeah. Oh, is that what they're calling? Wednesday. So they've taken over the whole week, which is kind of, to their credit, kind of impressive. I mean, I saw on Tuesday the place looked full. That's pretty impressive. Yeah, and all the events, there's something every night.
Starting point is 00:10:20 You know, I've got friends. I'm seeing on social media. It looks like they're already at the Kentucky Derby. I mean, these Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday events have gotten so big. Shannon's wrestling down on the waterfront tonight. That's right. Down on the OVWs down the waterfront. I mean, the reality is if you, and people who live there know,
Starting point is 00:10:37 if you want to get any work done in Louisville, just forget it this week. I mean, it's just not happening. I was talking to my accountant, and he was like, I've actually got some time because no one's in the office. Louisville takes the whole week off. It's not even, it's like they don't even contemplate working. So what is it considered now the locals day at the track with all these different days?
Starting point is 00:10:59 Oh, that's the local day. 50 Tuesday. Okay. Yeah. Thurby's expensive now. Oaks is crazy expensive. So basically they're like, in a few years, they're going to have you three weeks before. We're doing April events.
Starting point is 00:11:11 They're going to have you on Easter and say that's it. Well, yesterday, John Rothstein had a. a long-scheduled interview, I guess, with Mark Pope. And so I watched a little bit of it. And he actually said some news. So you tell me, Drew, as we go through here, what of these things interest you? Okay. Mark Pope says that the job, the Kentucky job, is what he thought, but even more demanding,
Starting point is 00:11:41 the fan base is not only crazy, they know everything you're doing on a daily basis. Do you agree with that? I do I like that part. He said, I'll wake up in the morning, and fans already know what I'm going to do that day before I've even done it. And sometimes before I even know what I'm doing. We do. That's right. I mean, when he first got here, I think he mentioned that, you know, he's going out to eat at Harry's,
Starting point is 00:12:02 and we have pictures online within seconds or whatever he's doing in town, whoever's in town, at the airport. I think he was overwhelmed right away because when he was here in the early 90s, that wasn't really a thing. But we, the fan base was on every move he made the second he started the job. I'm glad he knows that because that's just what. it's going to be that's right you know and that's not going to change he then said and i like this ryan that he loved being a head coach right now because college basketball could go 12 different ways and they have mapped out models for each potential future of college basketball and they have a plan for whatever happens when it happens isn't that amazing i love that that's amazing that was my
Starting point is 00:12:41 favorite part of it because that's what you're going to have to do you can see you can sit there and complain about history or you can try to make it work that's right so many of the older coaches, they're like, they're tapping out. They don't want to be a part of this. And then Mark's like embracing it and wanting to be a part of this ride. So that was amazing. He said for each different avenue that basketball could go, they're ready for it. He asked what Mark Pope was looking for in the portal, not just this year, but in general.
Starting point is 00:13:05 And he said, shooting's important, but the most important thing is being a decider. Decider, that's his phrase, which is when you get the ball, you quickly decide what you're going to do. For the bigs, that might mean passing, for guys it might be. being shooting, whatever it is, I need guys who are ready to make quick decisions. Did you like that? I like that. Not to get too far down your list, but in that same point, he talked about how coaching guys, there's so much that they're just going to do on their own, and he expects big jumps from guys he already retained,
Starting point is 00:13:34 already knowing and gone through it, a guy like Brandon Garrison, he mentioned. So a lot of player empowerment in their decision making. He says he's going to get one or two more people. I heard that. They could be redshirt-esque, but one or one or. or two more people, including potentially from Europe. So that means the roster's not done. And that would make sense why he was looking at that guy from Miami.
Starting point is 00:13:54 You know, one of a guy that maybe could come in, be act like a, quote, red shirt. But he feels like his 12 is his 12. And he said, he said, we're going to play all 12. We're going to play them all. Yeah, I don't know if you do that. I don't know if I've ever seen that play in 12. I don't know if you can do that.
Starting point is 00:14:08 I mean, you can do it sometimes, but you can't do it regularly, right? Certainly not as the year goes on. You get to the tournament. Even when Cal platooned, he tightened it up a little bit. for the post season. He did say the 12 he has already own all the minutes on the floor, so he either wants a red shirt or someone who's a last year player that just wants
Starting point is 00:14:25 to wear the Kentucky jersey and be part of that experience. He said, Jaden Quaintens is going to be great. Says he can already beat Mark Pope at chess. Which sounds impressive, Shannon, until we know, Mark even know the rules of chess, right? Mark likes to play chess, though. But if he likes to play chess, if this 17-year-old, 18-year-old is
Starting point is 00:14:45 beating him in chess, I like that. Maybe this is a very smart kid. I want to say Pope and maybe Colin Chandler had some battles throughout the year playing chess. He's mentioned it before playing with some of the players. So it might be another reason why he and Quaiton's got along so well. He said he thought Brandon Garrison and Colin Chandler were both ready to make a massive leap. Yeah, well, he used the word for Brandon. Superstar.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Superstar. You know, you want, I'm glad to hear him say that about Brandon, who did kind of make a jump at times last year in the second half of the season. Otega definitely did throughout the season. He said Jalen Lowe. he's going to quote, unleash him. Said he plays herky, jerky like Shea, Gilgis, Alexander. His change of direction is elite, and he plans on unleashing him to be a star.
Starting point is 00:15:29 I think that means we're going to see that dude shoot a lot. Yeah, they really liked him in the fit and how he has a pace of play. Pope basically said, we're just going to let him go. Fast, fast, fast, even compared him to an elite level tailback in football, how he can change direction and get around. Yeah, well, that was exciting. And finally on Denzel Aberdeen said when they found out he was available, they didn't even need to look at an evaluation because when they prep for the Florida game,
Starting point is 00:15:55 they saw a guy coming off the bench that was terrifying. And he said, we didn't even need to look. I knew we wanted him immediately. Yeah, the guy, obviously in the National Championship game, he played the last five minutes of the game for Florida. So obviously he's that type of player that can play in his championship situation. So you won a guy like that on your team. That's something Pope's done a lot of.
Starting point is 00:16:15 He did that with the first roster here. It's guys he's played in games. He really likes that. He played against Garrison. The thing he played against Oway, maybe even a few others that are slipping my mind. Maybe even Kobe Brea might have had a game against him. But Pope likes guys that he's already seen in competition. So, you know, I mean, he has his own, he's not like Cala Perry speak.
Starting point is 00:16:35 He kind of has his own Pope speak, which is a different kind of speak. But I still left that interview encouraged, and we got a little bit of news that they're going to get a couple more players. So it sounds like they're going to use up the whole roster. They're not going to have another time where there's like an 11th and 12th man not being used. He also went talking about Otega Owey said his future is beautiful. He had to get a beautiful in there. Couldn't help himself. I liked Colin Chandler face-timed him during the interview, and he just took it and made Colin Chandler part of the show.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Like, hey, he was live with John Rothstein. Well, we are here at KS. Barr. Tell me what do you think of the group next year? Or you can extend some of you, we didn't get to all of your ask anything questions, so feel free. I got a hodgepodge of random topics today. No overall theme, but we'll also do a tubby player draft. Oh, a tubby player draft. Tubby player draft.
Starting point is 00:17:22 We did it with Cal. We'll do it with tubby as well. We'll take a break. Be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying,
Starting point is 00:17:32 and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the head. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real.
Starting point is 00:17:54 From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:18:31 I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
Starting point is 00:18:52 because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood,
Starting point is 00:19:09 pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app search learn the hard way and listen now. What's up guys? This is Clever Taylor
Starting point is 00:19:20 the 4th. And on my podcast The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:19:29 This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me he goes, A ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office, Blue 42.
Starting point is 00:19:41 A rep. My mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:19:59 And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
Starting point is 00:20:19 We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
Starting point is 00:20:36 And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:20:56 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Tomorrow, I think we're going to end up doing the show at my house. We had a number of you offer your places, and I appreciate it, but nobody had the hardline internet that we, that we need. So I think we're just going to do it at my house. So that'll be a rare KSR home game for me in Mi Kasa tomorrow. You excited to come?
Starting point is 00:21:29 I am. We did it there about a year ago or so it seems like. Right before we went out of a trip. Yes. Uh-huh. Yeah, I did it in your living room. So that'll be good. So that should be fun.
Starting point is 00:21:37 So everybody in the highlands, I mean, don't come by. But in theory, you could come by if you. You want to set up on your little porch outside? No. But, you know, during COVID. I would step on the porch and people would drive by and honk and say hello, which was always nice. Okay, so we have some breaking news, Shannon. All right, Shannon's there.
Starting point is 00:22:00 St. John's podcaster, Davey 8. He has 5,000 followers, so I mean. We trust him. I'm going to trust Davey 8 because it also confirms with the news I put earlier last week that St. John's will be entering the CBS Classic and will replace you, which will lead to Kentucky St. John's in Atlanta this year. Do you like that? I'm very excited about that game.
Starting point is 00:22:28 When we did this earlier in the week, I picked Yukon to join the event overall. But sure, one-off with Rick Petino, I'm not going to complain about that. Being Atlanta, Kentucky can have the better crowd, not having to go up to New York or anything. Let's do it. That'll be packed. Yeah. That'll get a lot of attention. Kentucky and St. John's in Atlanta, that's going to be a packed house, cool game.
Starting point is 00:22:48 That's going to be awesome. Just as a fan, you're looking at it, Kentucky, UCLA? Kentucky St. John's? Yeah, I'm all in. We knew it was going to happen sooner or later. They're going to play each other with the Pope and Petino connection. If it happens in Atlanta first, I'm all for it. All right, so let's go through the North Carolina will play Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:23:06 We will play St. Johns. Who has the biggest crowd? Us? Yeah. We'll probably call Catlanta. Yeah. Yeah, so it's us. When Rick Petino comes out.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Now, we gave him the applause with Mark Pope saying, basically walking out saying, giving him the applause. Does he get applause when he's introduced as the coach of St. John's about to play Kentucky? He'll get a little, but I don't think so. It was my same opinion with Cal. He's there to beat your team. You don't give him a warm reception? The fact that it's in Atlanta, I think he will get a little.
Starting point is 00:23:39 I agree with Drew, a little bit of an applause. It won't be huge, but he won't get booed like he would if he came in here or something. I don't know that he would get booed even here. now. Maybe not now. I mean, I think John Caliperi would get booed, although there'll be a time that he won't.
Starting point is 00:23:56 But I think even if Rick played here, I actually just, I think he's going to get a lot around applause. The kind of person that goes to the CBS Classic tends to be a person with a little bit of like financial means because it's, you know, the ticket's
Starting point is 00:24:12 a little expensive. And then it's in December, so it's probably a hard call. I bet they, I bet he gets applause. I actually bet he gets a decent amount of applause. He has, unlike Cal, he has the Mark Pope buffer. Nobody wants to upset Pope. They know how much he looks up to him and how he's trying to welcome him back. Pope will say that week, make sure you give him a round of applause.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Now what kind of team they're supposed to have? Maybe the most talented team in the country. They have a lot of new pieces, which is a little different. I mean, our schedule next year is going to be really hard. Okay, so let's just look at our schedule. Who do we play in the Champions Classic? Michigan State. So we get a break there because they're not going to be great. But Louisville's going to be really good. Right? We'll get an ACC team. I don't know this,
Starting point is 00:25:01 but I think it would make sense for us to get Duke, right? Because we don't play Duke in the Champions Classic for two years. I think, if I'm guessing, the likely scenarios we play Duke at home this year and Duke there next year. I mean, you've got to think they're going to do that at some point. Isn't this year to do it? Yeah, I would bet anything it's Duke or North Carolina, and Duke would be the favorite of the two. Yeah, because next year we play North Carolina in Champions Classic, so I don't think they're going to want to put us with them. So, I mean, I think the schedule is going to be Michigan State, Duke, Louisville, Indiana, and St. John. In Gonzaga. And I mean, that is a hard schedule.
Starting point is 00:25:41 That is a hard schedule. At Louisville, Duke at home, Michigan State and St. John's on a neutral court. Indiana at home, Gonzaga in Nashville. That's pretty strong. And where is the, where's the Champions Classic? New York. New York. So we're looking at, we're playing at playing in New York, Atlanta, and Nashville.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Well, if you're a fan, that's pretty good. You can't ask for something better. Those are all reachable destination. You can go and watch these big games. I mean, those are six hard games. Like, those are six hard games. And then you know we play three stinky teams. What else is?
Starting point is 00:26:17 been announced from the schedule. Has anything else been announced? Any of the stinky games? Hadn't Bellarmine been announced? Bellarmine was announced. That's not a stinky game, though. Well, I mean, they were awful this year. Weren't they like four and 27?
Starting point is 00:26:31 They got a new coach, though. They'll be right. But it's his son. So, I mean, it's going to be a simple. Listen, I love Scotty. He just had a tough final year. But play Bellarmine. And so we kind of know at this point, Ryan, what our schedule is.
Starting point is 00:26:43 And after hearing Pope talk yesterday, I'm like, let's go. Bring it on. If he likes the roster and says we can make a run, let's start it. St. John's, Duke, and Louisville. Those will be three of the top seven teams in the country. Wow. We're going to play three of the top preseason seven in the country. Those are going to be big tickets.
Starting point is 00:27:00 Also, NC Central, that was reported. Okay. And I've heard a rumor to look out for, I don't even know the name of the school. I think it's like Texas Rio Grande Valley. Yes. Just to remember KSR told you first to look out for the fighting U.T.R. That is a school. Yeah, I think.
Starting point is 00:27:20 We play them? It hadn't been announced. The streets have whispered that to me in the past. What streets are talking about that? You know, I just, I keep my ear to the likes of the streets, and sometimes information just pops up. There's a Pope connection there, right? In the head coach, like I was the assistant. I just told to look out for that.
Starting point is 00:27:34 So I guess Rio Grande Valley, there we go. Who's first, Shannon? Let's go to Sean. Sean, go ahead, Sean. Hey, guys, it's nice to have a coach in there now back to the mentality of we'll play anybody. anywhere. You know, we started that way back in 2010, and then it migrated, so we need to give these freshmen time to gel. So it's nice to get back to that mentality. Yeah, so the reason I called, though, I listened to the podcast the other day. You guys were talking about the Edle Mending,
Starting point is 00:28:02 which I'm for it. It's a great thing. But I think college basketball has always had this mentality of we're the purest form of basketball. You don't see a lot of major changes. You haven't seen major changes. However, I want to make the case for real quick, and I want to hear you're all taking on. We got quick. 20 seconds. Let's go to sit. Let's go. Let's go. Yeah, let's go to six fouls. The reason for that is we keep your superstars in the game. You know, in the day and age where it costs a lot to go to games, you know, fans, fans get to enjoy it. And it takes the pressure off the official to keep the superstars in the game.
Starting point is 00:28:32 I want to hear the argument for six stars. I think it would be. To me, the next change college basketball needs to make quarters instead of halves, and then I like six fouls. Play the best guys. Quarters instead of a half. Then you don't have the situation. You get two foul in the first half and you're out.
Starting point is 00:28:48 I think that's a that nobody wants to see that. Nope. We'll take a break. Be right back. KSR. Attorney. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J.
Starting point is 00:28:58 He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Hey, those of you on the text machine, 772-754, I was stuck in an appointment for a little while yesterday reading a lot of these texts. One person writes, Matt, if we pay the players six fouls and quarters, sounds like the NBA, I can't stand the NBA.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Well, what is, I mean, people who say they can't stand the NBA. What can't you stand? Like, what is it you don't like? The season's way too long. I understand that. But a good playoff game is good. The only difference between the NBA and college is that the NBA guys are better. But in terms of style of play, they're getting very similar.
Starting point is 00:29:44 Used to be the NBA was a completely different style of play. We watch NBA games now. They shoot threes. They spread the floor. They play zones sometimes. The game is similar. They're just really good. Well, the texture so they don't like the NBA,
Starting point is 00:29:58 is it because there's six fouls in four quarters? Because that's the point we're trying to make here. Like, maybe you don't like the NBA. That's fine, but I don't think the six fouls would really determine what like an NBA. I would like, Ryan, there to be a moratorium. Can all of us agree on this moratorium? Everyone just don't ever complain about players being paid again. like about every fifth message is I'm tired of these getting, like it's not going to change.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Nope. So you can either, you can either be okay with it or just not watch college sports. But the, I don't think guys should be paid like this or I don't think they should be paid as much. Like, you just need to get over it. It's kind of, well, okay, you know. There's a lot of money in the sport. Somebody's got to get it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:41 It's like if you're watching golf and going like, I don't think there should be putting. That's you. Yeah, and that's why I don't play all the time Because they're not going to get rid of putting They're never going to get rid of pay anymore So if that's your problem, you probably just need to move on Times are changing, man, you've got to adapt to a changing world We adapted to cell phones, we adapted to the internet
Starting point is 00:31:04 You got to adapt to once in a while You've got to something like this Speaking of adapting, Mark Zuckerberg Who I think might be the weirdest person on the planet I thought Elon Musk was the weirdest person But I think Mark Zuckerberg is worse because Mark Zuckerberg is wearing gold chains and t-shirts, and I think he looks ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:31:22 I mean, he is the nerdiest person, and he clearly thinks he's cool, and that he's the worst. But anyway, he was on a Theo Vaughn podcast, and Theo Vaughn asked him about AI friends. Shannon, do you know what an AI friend is? No. It's basically they're creating this thing
Starting point is 00:31:44 where you can have something, on your phone that's AI that will be your friend. Like ask you how your day was. Have a conversation with it? How's your mom? Would you eat for dinner? And over time, it'll learn who you are. And in theory, become your friend. And Mark Zuckerberg said that the average person only has three friends.
Starting point is 00:32:10 First of all, you think that's true? Depends on what you call like friend, you know? Like there's acquaintances. but what do you call a friend like what do you think a friend is is it somebody you spend a lot of time with is it somebody you like how many friends do you think you have like friends by whatever definition you want to give drew how many friends do you have a lot more than three i don't know over 50 i don't even know how to you have more than anyone i know but over 50's a lot what would you classify friends. I think somebody you keep in contact with.
Starting point is 00:32:48 My high school friend, we only talk once a year, but he's still my friend. I think to be your friend, they have to, you have to either been in their house or they're in your house in the last year. See, I don't know. You guys aren't my friends then. That's true that I've never been in Shannon's house. So maybe Shannon's not my friend. Well, either way, I would say I have like eight. Like good friends. I have acquaintances or people I like. Yeah, your inner circle of good friends is all. He says that most people have three or less friends, and he says studies say you need 15 friends.
Starting point is 00:33:22 I don't know where these studies are that you need 15 friends. And he said he thinks AI can be your other 12 friends. And he thinks there's nothing wrong with that. And one day, we will be accepted that you will get on your phone and you'll go, I want to talk to AI Friends 7 today. and they're always available, and that that will replace some human friendships. Now, I think that's absolute nonsense. Sounds better than my normal friends, though, because they're never available.
Starting point is 00:33:58 Okay, well, there you go. That's what I was going to say. All right. So it sounds like nonsense. But Chanon just said, you know, sometimes, like my friends, they've all had kids. You know, sometimes they're like, my snot-nosed kid has to, like, play volleyball. or, you know, we got to go to Kings Island or, I don't know, something like that, and then they're not available.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Could it be that you could get that same connection with an AI friend? My initial reaction is this is very sad. It's sad to me that there, but there are people out there, like maybe people who are working from home since COVID, maybe they're a single mom, the kids are out of the house or a dad, the kids are out of the house, but they're lonely. I get so good that like it looks like a real person. So it looks like a real person. It talks like a real person.
Starting point is 00:34:43 You talk to them over Zoom. And it's everything a person would be, except they're actually not a real person. Like I said, I think it's sad to think about it. But yet, I would be happy for those people to at least not feel lonely and have something. Do you think you would try to be friends with one of these? No, negative. Not a chance. I think it's terrible.
Starting point is 00:35:03 It's just going to be more people being isolated, not looking up from their screens, and not knowing how to exist in the real world. I agree with you. He was taking up for it. He was like, in 50 years, everyone will look at this differently. He was like, in 50 years, AI friends will be almost like psychologist. They will give you what a friend gives you. It's just you can't touch them and see them.
Starting point is 00:35:24 What about when you have to go into the real world where there are real people and you have to interact? But maybe there won't be real people, though. Then you'll be as awkward as he is. No, but I do wonder if some extent his view is like perpetuated by the fact that he, He's awkward and weird. Uh-huh. Yeah. And so maybe it works for him.
Starting point is 00:35:43 You know, the folks that are stuck at home a lot of time, you can order your groceries. You don't have to really leave anymore. Unless you have to work. You can work from home, you know, a lot of the folks. So maybe this is a way, I don't know. I found the interview. It's like three or four minutes.
Starting point is 00:35:55 I found it very sad because he's probably right that it will fill that for a lot of people. But it is kind of sad. It's sad, though, yep. But at the same time, I also will say, like there's people who listen to the show. I'm like this with certain parts. podcast. I don't know those people, but I listen, and I wouldn't say they're my friend, but I do get connection. That's a great point. We have people call the show all the time. I get it. I'm the same way. I'm like that. So I don't know. I found it an interesting conversation,
Starting point is 00:36:25 even though he is ridiculous looking on all sides. Who's what's next? Chester. Chester. How are you, Chester? Hey, man, I'm doing pretty good. I had a question for you that I was wanting to know if you thought could ever become a reality in this new NIL situation of thing. Could you ever foresee a situation where Mark Pope would go down to, say, like, an E.K.U. And basically, they work out an agreement where they would kind of work together on the NIL and send, like, the Travis Perry for the world there for a couple years. And then they did practice together. And just, I'd love to see that.
Starting point is 00:37:04 What school was it where this coach just said this the other day? Yeah, I think we even talked about it. Making like a G-League for colleges. There was a coach, maybe he was at Fordham or something. There was a coach at one of these schools, I think you and I talked about it off the air, that said they wanted to be this for a big program. They're like, we've talked to big programs about you go recruit eight guys in a recruiting class and send us four.
Starting point is 00:37:28 And we'll do the first two years for them and then send them to you. That will basically be like your AAA squad. This is like a mid-major program. I think it makes sense. I think it would make perfect sense to say, you know, hey, Travis Perry, rather than, why don't you go to Eastern for, you know, he'd already played for a year. So maybe you take a notch below Travis Perry. But whoever, and you say, go play at Eastern where you can start and play every day
Starting point is 00:37:54 and then you'll be ready for us. And if you're not good enough, then you can find a school that's on the level you want. And if you're Eastern, you're going to get talent that maybe you wouldn't have gotten otherwise, you know? You know, not along the same lines, but, you know, we heard it, Tennessee, tucked a wet guy away down at Lincoln Memorial, thinking maybe they were going to get him. Well, he didn't have giving, but that would make a lot of sense. There's a kid I saw who signed with Lincoln Memorial who said that one of the major colleges, he didn't say he stuck me over here, but they suggested I go here.
Starting point is 00:38:23 Lincoln Memorial, I think, is taking that view. So, Drew, I actually think it makes sense. I like the idea. You'll need it to get when they have contracts, so you know you're getting the guy back, so you don't just send someone you really want. kind of like the Freeman at Lincoln Memorial, he ends up going to Auburn instead of Tennessee after Tennessee thought they had that one for a while. So I would want it in writing before I send him off to another school. But I think it would be a good idea. Yeah, Chester, I think it's a great idea.
Starting point is 00:38:46 And if I'm in Eastern Kentucky, I embrace that. Because like Lincoln Memorial, that dude that went there, he might end up in the NBA. And one day they could hang up on their thing that this NBA player played at his school and then went to Auburn and then that helps them get other guys. So I think it's a great idea. And you might even get fan interest of their familiar the player would normally go to an Eastern game. Yeah, that's exactly right. If Kentucky, if we had a AAA squad in Eastern Chester, I'd go watch more games. Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:39:13 Yes, sir. I would. And I think it would be even a great opportunity. I don't know how much they could even do this. But, you know, if they were working, if Coach Pope and the coach down there worked together, they'd work the same system, they'd, you know, they could work together. And I think it'd be awesome for EKU and Coach Hamilton down there and also for the cats and the fans.
Starting point is 00:39:31 I totally agree with you. Appreciate the call, Chester. When you look into the mirror in the morning, what do you see? A beautiful human being. Well, you might also see spots on your skin that would worry. I do have one. Well, how about the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center? Maybe you should go see them.
Starting point is 00:39:45 Well, we're going to be there next Friday. Okay. Oh, this is... Do you have one for real? Yeah, it's on one of my side. The Browns, is at this side? You should go look at that. Get that checked out.
Starting point is 00:39:54 I will have a check out. What about this one right here? I know it's on one side. Is it on this side? That's a huge spot for you to think is on the other side. Look at that. That's... Oh, yeah, we've got to get that checked.
Starting point is 00:40:04 Yeah, we'll get it checked out. Good. Kentucky Skin Cancer Center, Paducah, Franklin, Bowling Green, and Owensboro. You can go get them checked out. Make sure you're no, there's no reason to have any worry. They can cure your skin cancer and give the best cosmetic result possible. It's the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center, and we are there next Friday in Owensboro at 2915 New Hartford Road in Owensboro, the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center, where you're not just a patient.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Treat you like family. Learn more at kentucky skincancercenter.com. That's on. That's, you should get that's big. Yeah, my doctor's looked at it. She calls it a sunspot. But I guess it could be. That could be skin cancer.
Starting point is 00:40:47 Yeah, I get that checked out. Go get that checked out. I heard Shannon's getting a facial during the pre-show on Friday while we're there. Yeah, as long as we can pull that off, I'll do it. All right. Well, good deal. We'll take a break. Barry back, Kentucky Sports Radio.

I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:42:17 and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:42:32 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. And on my podcast, The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:43:12 Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:43:32 And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is, about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
Starting point is 00:43:50 I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Techies Sports Radio, 859-2-8027. Text machine is 772-7-4-5-254.
Starting point is 00:44:42 One person writes, I know how Ryan's mind works. He thought the spot was on the other side because when he looks in the mirror, it's on the other side. That is a good guess as to how your mind works. Is that why you thought it was on the other side? I didn't even sit here. I didn't know which side it was on. It was on one of these sides. But like if you look in the mirror, the side it's on is going to be on the other side.
Starting point is 00:45:00 Maybe so, see. That's exactly, Drew, I know that's exactly what happened. Yeah, that texture of the day was inside Ryan's brain. One person writes, Matt, you always say, I like when people start senses like this, you always say you're a good Christian, but you do criticize people a lot. You're criticizing Zuckerberg doesn't seem very Christian like. Well, here's what I would say. I doubt there's any human being or very few human beings on Earth that don't criticize anyone.
Starting point is 00:45:29 If you do, I'll give you applause. I remember when my mom was a prosecutor, sometimes, you know, in Bell County there would be very, like, very religious, like people. Oh, yeah. And they would occasionally come in and say, I can't be on the jury because I don't believe you can judge anyone. I should have tried that one. Well, you have to say what denomination, do you know what denomination believes that? No, but I would have definitely found out for one of my 10 jury duties since. Well, I think the judge, the judge would then ask questions to make sure they were sincere in their belief.
Starting point is 00:46:07 So you might need to know at least what verse that comes from. But that was, and they could get off jury duty sometimes by saying, it is my faith. I do not judge anyone. So except those people, I don't believe anyone does not judge or criticize someone. Right. I'm sure that person that wrote that, if I scroll up, they call me a stinking liberal. like seven or eight tweets before that. Isn't most of the good gossip in church circles anyway?
Starting point is 00:46:35 Like I'm thinking about Steve Harvey talking about Sister Odell and that whole skit. But, you know, that's a lot of churches like to gossip a little bit and talking about people. Do you know one person that doesn't judge anyone ever? Come on. No, no. And by the way, this is. Larry maybe? Larry would be my guess.
Starting point is 00:46:51 You know, Larry would be the closest. Yeah. But even he sometimes will go, I don't like the way he acts. So I think. Stay away from that person. You know, I don't think that that happens. 859-2-80-2287. We're going to do a tubby draft here in just a minute.
Starting point is 00:47:12 One question writes, Matt, I haven't heard anything about the UK football team in months. Good sign, bad sign. My take is that's a bad sign. I think they know they're replacing 16 starters. They've got new faces all over the place. So you think they know they're going to stink. I think if they knew they were going to be good, they'd be pounding their chest a little bit. Or maybe is it the effort, they've been pounding their chest for the last few years,
Starting point is 00:47:41 didn't go well, and they've taken a lot of criticism for it, and so they're taking a step back. I hope. I just don't feel that way. I think that's it. They don't want to set a high bar and then fall short and just get even more criticism than what they've already gotten. They have been very quiet over there since the offseason started. Let me ask you a question. Well, these are
Starting point is 00:48:01 These are fans that would know Well, I ask you, sir Do you know what the name of our quarterback Is going to be next year? Yeah. What is it? Yeah, so you don't, but what's his name? Do you know his name?
Starting point is 00:48:16 Exactly. Close. I mean, this is not a criticism of you. I just think Nick Calzada, or is Nick Calzada. Zach in it. Zach Calzada. Proved your point.
Starting point is 00:48:31 But his brother, Nick is they're very close. Zach Calzada, okay, you get my point. Yep. We don't know, we don't know anything about him. This is our
Starting point is 00:48:46 quarterback, the one position on the field that presumably, you know, we don't know anything. And by we, I'm throwing myself in there. I don't know. I have no idea about the quarterback of our football team. I think it's all very intentional. This is the most quiet they've ever been.
Starting point is 00:49:05 I said this when it happened, but they had that spring game, and social media didn't even mention it for 24 hours, not a gates open, get in here. It was almost like they were hiding it from everyone. Jenin, would you know Zach Kausata if he walked into that studio? No, but he would be old because he's a seven-year guy. Yeah, exactly. He'd have like Ben Gay on or something because he's old. But otherwise, yeah, I mean, that makes this a fascinating thing
Starting point is 00:49:30 in that we just don't know the team at all. I think they're actually going to be a little better, but they know how brutal the schedule is, and they don't want to set any kind of bar to fall short of it and have fans all over them like they were last year. I might have to do a lot of research just to even in August, like preview the team, because I just don't know anything about them at all. All these new faces. I can tell you what I know about Zach Calzata. From Incarnate Word, he's got a cannon for an arm, and a little bit of a beer belly.
Starting point is 00:49:56 It's got a beer belly. A little bit of a belly, just a little one. How do you know that? just my scouting services you have you have you have beer belly scouting services yeah okay nothing wrong with a little belly we like to Jared the reason so he's got so he's got a belly there's going to be a picture Shannon come out with him like a six pack or something yeah and then we're going to go ah I don't know if that was right yeah they got touched up like Ryan's picture did
