Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Life is full of hurdles, so how do you keep going? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we're talking with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, from professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions about the challenges that shape them and the mindset that keeps them moving forward. At our level, at this scale, being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything.

Starting point is 00:02:31 Comedyoff-Broadway.com. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. All right, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, grandpals and grandmalls, aunts and uncles, and all you crazy people in Big Blue Nation. It is the Thursday, May 8th edition of Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:53 As always, Connecticut Sports Radio, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office called T.J.N. Shannon. He'll make them pay. He'll make them pay. We'll have our Clark's Pubbyshop phone number. We'll be up and going all day today. That's 859-2802-287. The A-Vision Glass text machine is my, I guess, my cell phone today.
Starting point is 00:03:09 What's that number? If you don't have it, tough. I'm not giving it out. I've got it. No, it's okay. No, it's all right. And then we'll have our whiskey thief call today. So listen, guys, black smoke over the Vatican this morning.
Starting point is 00:03:24 The Cardinals have not elected a new pope, but there was white smoke over the I heart building today. Oh. Because we have new host today. What's that? What about that? The equipment was on fire or something. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, Shannon the dude, Billy Relage, Mario Maitland. It takes five of us, four of us to replace Matt Jones, who understandably Drew is going to pass on the show today. He's got a long day today. Flies back from Phoenix. As soon as he lands in Cincinnati, Mario's picking him up, then they're driving three hours to Owensboro tonight. Long day. So we kind of understand why he's uh load management load management taking a pass today pulling a sovereignty
Starting point is 00:04:04 sitting this one out to rest up for the next week we're at the kentucky skin cancer center in oinsborough tomorrow should go ahead and shout that out now so we all we all have a little bit of traveling to do coming up i'm still i'm still filling the effects from phoenix i need this coffee to kick in and after your intro you seem like you've had plenty of coffee when did you work on that smoke joke was that off the cuff or was that on the drive over oh no that's show prep okay because we didn't get short notice is when we figured this out here My alarm goes off at 715 to make sure Josiah is up and going. I check my phone and Matt sent us a message at 2.30 in the morning our time.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Guys, I need to pass on the show. It's going to be a long day. I need to be fresh for Friday's remote in Owensboro. So from 715 on, I've been up. I couldn't go back to sleep because all of a sudden my mind's working. I'm like, what are we going to talk about? There's nothing going on. Drew and Shannon, Billy.
Starting point is 00:04:50 We're all going to be there. What are we going to talk about? I was up early because I wrote the morning post on KSR today. I was up a little before 7 to do that. but I get text to my computer and you're the only person who doesn't come to my computer because they're green. So even though Matt had sent the message,
Starting point is 00:05:06 I still didn't know this because I hadn't looked at my phone until close to 9 a.m. So I trust that you did all of the show prep. I'm just hearing my usual seat ready to react to whatever you brought for us. Well, I've got my list of topics. I already used the black smoke analogy. That's good though.
Starting point is 00:05:22 That was really good. Three minutes in. Now what? So, you know, the Cardinals went to, went into the Sistine Chapel they're 0 for 1. Nothing like no new Pope elected yesterday. I took this as good news. It means pizza ball is still alive.
Starting point is 00:05:35 If it had been one night, I think it would just go on to the favorite. But the longer it goes, I think the better our guy pizza baller can pull this off. And Shannon, like I said yesterday, if he wins, he can't change his name. You know, they change their name to Pope John Paul and Pope Francis. He's got to be Pope Pizza Baller, right? Well, he would, right? I mean, that's his... You're telling me they actually changed their last name?
Starting point is 00:05:55 Oh, yeah. They've been... So Pope Francis wasn't really... his name wasn't Francis? Correct. I'm pretty sure. Pappel name? Papel. Look at you. Wow. See, this coffee's kicking in. I'm going to be all right today. I thought that Pope Francis was actually his name was Francis. But yeah, Pizza Bala, I feel like Pope Pizza Bala would be perfect.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Pete Zabala is perfect. Is it a rule they have to do that? Or is it like you have the option to, have a radio name if you want to? We'll get into that maybe the next segment. We need a little more research. We don't want to go through all of our knowledge before the first break. go on my show prep list already in the first segment. You know, like a wrestling name or something, you know? Well, I mean those wrestling names aren't real? You mean his real name is not cash flow?
Starting point is 00:06:38 Mr. Pectacular? Reverend Ronnie, those aren't real names? Well, some of them might be, but no, not all of them. Your name's real. Well, yeah, the first name is, not the last. The dude is actually not my last name, believe it or not, Ryan. Yeah. You know, there's not a lot going on, but I thought the one
Starting point is 00:06:57 news topic that I guess we should maybe lead with is our boy Aaron Torres did a podcast. Well, hi, Billy. What's up, Ryan? He doesn't, he's not always on this portion of chaos. No, I'm here. Headphones on, he's on a microphone. Good morning, Billy. How are you doing? I'm doing great, Ryan. Your hair looks great. Thank you. It must have been really tough for Matt and Drew to go play a TPC course in Arizona and go to the Bet Gala. I got a lot of sympathy for you guys. Warm out. Hey, I'm here. I answer the bell. My last day off was in like September, so I'm just going to keep showing up.
Starting point is 00:07:30 And Ryan, you're right. While it's not strictly required, it is custom for a newly elected Pope to choose a new papal name. But do they have to or they have the option? Not a requirement. Oh, there you go. It's a tradition. We're keeping Pizza Bala.
Starting point is 00:07:44 I think pizza ball is his made-up name. He's getting out in front of this knowing he's going to win. Billy, I know you and I both had a little FOMO when the guys are playing golf out there and we see him at the big bit gala. Oh, yeah. I had a little fomo going on. Well, yeah, when Matt brought me on the show to say I could play TPC Tate's Creek with him while the guys went to Arizona, I had a little bit of foam. A little bit of difference.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Nothing wrong with TPC Tate's Creek. That's my best round. Yeah, but you guys were looking great, especially Mario over there. All right. Aaron Torres. He's a friend of ours, friend of the show. Former KSR writer, Aaron Torres. He wrote a book, One and Fun.
Starting point is 00:08:18 One and Fun. One of the few books I've read in the last 20 years. He had Jaden Quaintance on his podcast. and Jaden Quentin's had said something to Jack Pilgrim. How long ago did he say that to Jack Pilgrim? I was shortly after his commitment. It was during Drew Paloosa, I believe. He came on Drew Paloosa too.
Starting point is 00:08:36 He's been good at doing interviews since making the commitment. Well, in the podcast with Aaron Torres, he says, look, I'm not only going to be ready by September. I'm going to be banging and pushing and shoving and doing my job. I'm going to be ready to go by September, which means that's plenty in time before the practice starts. I mean, if that's the case, Drew, if that's fact, I've said it.
Starting point is 00:08:57 I think Drew, Jaden Quaidens, could be our best player. May not be the leading score, but could be the best player on the team next year. And if he's healthy when the season starts, look out. I don't know much about ACL injuries. I'm not a doctor. He injured it in February. That seems like a very optimistic timeline. I hope it's the case.
Starting point is 00:09:15 And he's said a couple times that's what he's shooting for. But that would be a pretty miraculous comeback to be at full contact, as he said he wants to do by September. Hopefully that's the case. and he didn't clarify if he meant just kind of back on the court, running, practicing or actually wants to play in the season opener. I think he told Jack a while back, his goal is the season opener. But if he can pull that off, that's an incredible recovery time, coming back from a serious injury just at the end of last season.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Billy, that's the fact. This team went from a good team to a Final Four team with him healthy. If he's healthy the whole year, that's how good I think he is. Yeah, this whole front court, it's been exciting to see the depth that they have. But if you're telling me, Quaitance is going to be ready to go from the start of the year, not only does that make me more optimistic that they can win in the Champions Classic, but also the Louisville game, as it's before the Champions Classic this year. Well, I think Louisville is going to try to move the game to August now,
Starting point is 00:10:03 because I think they put it in November because originally everybody was kind of saying mid-December for Quaintance, I think they've got to help their chances. I mean, they've lost 14 out of 16. They've got to go to some extreme measures here to try to win this game. So I think they moved it to November thinking Kentucky wouldn't have Quaintance. An hour after that news comes out, Quentin says he's shooting for September, so I think Louisville's going to try to push it back to August
Starting point is 00:10:25 and do anything they can to win this game. Now, you're right. ACLs are a funny animal. Some people do take eight, ten months. But you then always go back. Well, Derek Anderson ripped his ACL in January. He was ready to go by the final four just a couple months later. It may be individual healing process.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Maybe guys heal faster than others. But I'm telling you, when I saw him say that, that very confident in his comments to Aaron Torres, I just think, if you're not, you were able to put him on the floor with Brandon Garrison at the same time. The front cord obviously very strong. Then you got Aberdeen and Otega and Lowe, running out your starting five.
Starting point is 00:11:01 I mean, that's a team that can win the whole thing, really. Yeah, at first we thought it might even be SEC play before we see him, which would still be great to get him to that point. If he goes that early, that's a difference maker. Also, just like hearing from this guy, as you mentioned, we had him on, when I was hosting, Jacks had him on 11, or not 11 personnel sources, say. The interview with Torres. I really just enjoy hearing from this kid.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Some of these guys, especially to be 18 years old, they're not good at interviews. It's a one-word answer. It's clear they don't want to be there. He's been a really fun interview, not just on our shows, but hearing him on others. And I like him a lot, not just what he will bring to the basketball court eventually. But that was a good interview with Torres yesterday. And he has a lot to prove. Sorry to interrupt you.
Starting point is 00:11:41 But I was going to say, I mean, it kind of fell through with Kentucky when Cal left, and it was a place he wanted to be. So now he comes back and with a first round grade in the next NBA draft, I think he wants to prove people that he is deserving of that and wants to play well for Big Blue Nation. Do you think he would be the best player like I think he will be? Like I said, may not the leading score. I think he's going to lock up our,
Starting point is 00:12:03 I think he's got the best player spot, especially if he even improves from last year. I think he's looking at potential, definitely all-SEC, maybe all-American season if he can continue or even take another step forward. But Quaintance is the biggest NBA talent. He's projected as a lottery pick right now, as long as he can prove that he's back to full health.
Starting point is 00:12:20 one of my friends did tell me this past weekend he's fearful that one team is going to tell Otega we're going to take you in a second round you're going to get a guaranteed contract we're going to take you in the second round and you're going to have a guaranteed contract does that still concern you no I think he'd be crazy to take second round money with whatever UK will pay him I don't know exactly what check UK will write but I don't know that a second round probably bounce around G league and back to the NBA that kind of set up why Why wouldn't you put that off a year and go make at least a million or two at Kentucky? Yeah, and I think the latest Bleach Report mock draft, he's the last pick of the second round,
Starting point is 00:12:57 the last pick of the draft. And I think there's been some reporting on KSR that he would only go if he was guaranteed a first round spot. And some guys are what they are, so they just go. If he comes back and improves his three-point shot, you can go from second round to first round, because he's got a lot of other good tools. It's the three-point shot that's holding him back. And if he has a whole summer working on that, can fix that little hitch in his job. jumper and shoot it a better clip next year.
Starting point is 00:13:19 The NBA check gets a lot bigger, and you already made another year of a lot of money at Kentucky in your second season here. That's it, man. He can make himself a lot of money if he comes back and improves his three-point shot. He's got the rest of the game. And it seemed to me like when the season started last year, his shot was a little smoother. And as the season went on, that hitch got a little worse and a little worse and a little
Starting point is 00:13:39 worse. You feel the same way? Yeah, that'll be a priority this summer working on that because, I mean, getting to the basket. We saw what he can do there? What do you have double figures in every game but two or something crazy? Yeah. Yeah, ball handling can improve a little bit, but those are all things that are fixable.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Some guys, you just can't get bigger, you can't get quicker, you can't get stronger. They are what they are. But Otega always still has some stuff he can work with and really improve his game with another year in college. It'll be odd because my expectations were pretty low for him going into the year. I mean, coming from Oklahoma, I didn't expect him to be the guy that scores double figures in every game but two. So now I think I go into this season if he's on the roster as he is the best player on the team. So it's going to be definitely a change at expectations for what we see from him. On the original point of Quaitance, if he comes back to full strength and can match the potential
Starting point is 00:14:26 that they've been saying he has since he's been, heck, he played last year at 17, which is crazy, but what they expect he can become, he will be a huge difference maker. And they already have so much depth. Agreed. It's almost like you don't need him. We'd love to have them for the Louisville game and the Champions Classic, but it's not the end of the world. It's not like he's the only option there. So if he does have to be a little more patient, that's fine. As long as he's able to play it at a high level at some point,
Starting point is 00:14:50 he makes a big difference for Kentucky. We got a full house today. Drew Franklin, Shannon the dude, Billy R. Sports in his hair, and we're going to take your calls as well. Breaking news right before the show started. We've got to get to that. A little disappointing breaking news. We'll get to that.
Starting point is 00:15:03 And we're going to have another one of our drafts, Shannon. You know, like Matt had his draft, the All Caliperi team, then we did the All-Tubby team. We're going to have a different kind of draft, probably in the second hour today. Rick Petino's team? No. No, it's just kind of a little, because I think Matt still wants to do that with us.
Starting point is 00:15:19 It's going to be just a little bit of a different. You're going to give us like a heads up. We've got to prepare for this draft. Well, maybe I'll tell you off the air. A draft committee has to get our picks together. That's true. We've got to get in the green room. The big board.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Our war room. Get our boards together. 859-2802-287. Ryan, Drew, Shannon, Billy, Mario. It's a full house. We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed the game.
Starting point is 00:15:41 This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear.
Starting point is 00:16:03 The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations.
Starting point is 00:16:42 with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:17:15 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Open your free Our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey.
Starting point is 00:17:53 I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:18:31 Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness. professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout, Kate Martin, and rising hockey star, Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel like you don't feel like. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs, Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face like. up and smile. That means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do
Starting point is 00:19:22 anything. I can do like I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan, Drew, Shannon, Billy, Mario, full house. Matt's going to take a day off arriving back in Kentucky late tonight. Then we do our show in Owensboro tomorrow at the Kentucky's Skin Center, Skin Cancer Center.
Starting point is 00:19:56 And where's the location? It seems like, Shannon, you told him to go to a hotel tomorrow. I gave the wrong address on the pre-show. So, Billy, what is the correct address? It's New Hartford Road, right? 29-15 New Hartford Road. There you go. That's it.
Starting point is 00:20:09 See, in Owensboro, there's an old Hartford Road. and obviously now there's a new Hartford Road there you're at the location at New Hartford Road Pre-show will be there Pre-show will be there We're getting facials Are you excited for that Ryan I've never had a facial
Starting point is 00:20:22 I don't even know what they do in a facial What do they do when you have a facial Well I don't want to spoil it But if any of us have had one I guarantee it's you What do you mean by that Pampered baby I have a nice skincare routine
Starting point is 00:20:38 I wear a nice moisturizer sunscreens every day, but no, I've not had a facial. Oh, you've not had a facial? No, I've never had one. This will be my first. I haven't. Shannon, have you? Not a professional one. I think I've put on some of Sarah's like mask things that you can put on at night. Shannon's had a different facial. Not talking about that. I'm talking about the, you can put like a, I don't know, it's like a piece of plastic thing that you put over like your face that's got like all these is that what we're doing tomorrow?
Starting point is 00:21:08 Moisturizing stuff. I think they're like scrubbing your face and they may put like a mud mask on you. Get some dead skin. Put some serums on there. Shannon, I think you were wearing a collagen mask. There you go. See, Drew knows. I had one on last week. I'm not shy about my skincare routine. A collagen mask. Thank you. That's what it is. You got to take care of your body, Ryan, it's your temple. Getting older, you got to make sure everything looks good. A sunscreen is very important. That's, that's my advice to everyone listening. Wear your sunscreen. So you and me and Matt are getting our facials during the pre-show. Yes. I have an 845 of appointment. I didn't know we had appointments. Oh, yeah. And that's actually central time.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Well, Matt's not going to make the time. I can tell you that because he's going to be coming, what, from Cincinnati. Mario's driving him. Mario's driving him. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think that's. Are you doing yours during KSR then? Yeah, I'm going to do it afterwards. We're going to try to the pre-show, but I don't know how good that. It's going to be a train wreck. But we'll give it a try and see what happens. We'll see. So we'll be there tomorrow and I'll get our facials and try a new thing. After, and we're sticking around for some barbecue, right, it is the festival. The barbecue festival in Owensboro. I don't think I've been in 20 years. I used to try to hit it every year. It probably went four or five times consecutively. I'm looking forward to our show first, facial, and then hanging around a little bit and eating
Starting point is 00:22:27 every piece of barbecue in town. I mean, we talk a lot about hibbley days in Pikeville, Court Days in Mount Sterling. The barbecue festival in Owensboro is right up there when it comes to people watching and things you don't think. eating way too much food. Eating way too much. Greasy, nasty food. Not nasty, but bad on your stomach food. I won't call it the healthiest day we'll have.
Starting point is 00:22:51 But, you know, when you're at Wesleyan, did you have some, do you all go tear up the barbecue festival every year? Oh, my goodness. Yes, absolutely. We've been there many times, but I haven't been to the barbecue festival in probably 30 years. Well, it's time. So it's time to go back. Shannon, you're in for a treat. You got to stick around to go down and just kind of walk.
Starting point is 00:23:07 But all the good people watching will be like in the evening, you know. that's when the people come out. People come out, huh? The freaks come out at night. The freaks come out at night. Yeah. Well, I'll stick around for some barbecue. I'm down with that. I don't know that I'll be sticking out for the,
Starting point is 00:23:23 stick around for the freaks coming out, as you put it, later on in the night, though. 859-2802-287. That's our Clark's Publishop phone number. We did get this on the A-Vision Glass text machine. This guy, I guess, has my cell phone number. A lot of times ACL recovery depends on the severity of the tear and the health and shape of the person.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Someone active in good physical health takes less time in most cases. Well, I know like Ronald Ocunia Jr. drew for the Braves. He tore his ACL, I think it was a year ago. And I don't think he's coming back until July. So that would put it like 14 months for him. But to come back in seven months, that's crazy. And you said Anderson came back in two months, Ryan? The tear was in like January and he was ready to go when the cats were playing in the final four.
Starting point is 00:24:10 That's insane. It is unbelievable. And then Patino famously did not play him. Right. Well, I can say why. He practiced that day, full practice, but they did not play him in the game for fear of risking further injury and, you know, damaging his NBA future. Shannon, you mentioned the Braves. Matt didn't let us talk about it.
Starting point is 00:24:28 I know we lost last night, but we won the series over Summer of Ellie. Actually, some bad news. Hunter Green got hurt last night. We didn't. We won't celebrate that. We don't like injuries. But since he wouldn't even let us say the results yesterday, we got to work in. that outside of last night it was a good series for Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Well, it's actually a four-game series, so they got one more tonight. Well, I got ahead of myself then. It's okay. We can make it three games to one. But yet the Reds have been banged up in this series. Their left filter just broke his forearm in game one. And that was a – I don't know if you saw that. That was crazy.
Starting point is 00:24:59 But Matt Olson for the Braves ended up with an inside the park home run. The left filter, I think it was Callahan, I think is his name, broke his forearm when he ran against the wall and just laid there on the ground. in pain. The ball's right next to them. Meanwhile, Matt Olson's just circling the bases. Some of the Reds fans weren't too happy about that, Ryan, but you know, the play continues, right? Just like in football or basketball. It's a live ball. It's a live ball.
Starting point is 00:25:23 You keep it on. We saw a losing record, though. It's not fun. As a potential World Series team before the season began, it's not fun to be in third in the division. Well, going into last night, the Reds had lost five in a row, and then last night they won, but they lost Hunter, maybe lost Hunter Green. He left the game.
Starting point is 00:25:40 I will point out my St. Louis Cardinals have one five in a row. Okay. There we go. There we go. There we go. But the baseball season for that division, the Reds and the Cardinals are not doing well. Braves, your Braves are not doing well. Who's your team, Billy?
Starting point is 00:25:56 The Rays? The Rays. And they're playing in that stupid minor league ballpark because the roof got torn off when they had that storm come. And it just doesn't feel like a real season. I don't know. It just feels like exhibition games. But the Rays are in trouble. There's no doubt.
Starting point is 00:26:09 The Cardinals or Reds are only three games. is back out of first, so they're not doing that bad. It's just a terrible division. Terrible division, yeah. All right, 859-2-2-287. That's the Clark's Pump and Shop phone number. Let's get Brian. He's been our first caller.
Starting point is 00:26:20 I get ready to go. So, hello, Brian. How are you doing? Hey, what's up, guys? How are you, Brian? I'm doing good. Hey, I was going to see what you guys were going to get into an Owensboro tonight. It's called my bed.
Starting point is 00:26:38 I'm going to get into. I'm going to get in my bed tonight when I get there. Is that an open invitation to the listeners? I don't know if you guys were getting out somewhere. The young, Young bucks may be getting out somewhere, but not me. I'm coming in, going to tuck in and get a good night's rest for the show tomorrow. Gotcha, gotcha,
Starting point is 00:26:57 hey, can I give you some suggestions of some spots to hit? Please. Again, it's my bed. I'm going to hit my bed. Well, I'm talking to the young guys. Yeah, let us hear it. Let us hear it. Yeah, I'd love it.
Starting point is 00:27:10 Hey, uh, check out a Brasher's Little Nashville. It's downtown. Okay. What about that is? All right. Yeah. It's a cool little bar and, uh, the tavern 144. It's a couple of spots.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Okay. Appreciate it. Thank you, Brian. Appreciate the phone call. Where did a young Ron live and hang out? Oh, it was the brass. The brass A saloon, Barnabies, Boilerm, Taylor's Tavern. those were the hot spots.
Starting point is 00:27:41 I feel like you were in college. You don't have to tell anything you don't want to tell, but a bit young Ron Lemon when he wasn't stealing bases. I'd like to get after a little bit. Well, Barnabies was as big as any place in the Evansville, Owensboro, Henderson area. People would travel over from Evansville to go to Barnabes. It was crazy.
Starting point is 00:27:57 And the brass? Hmm. Oh, maybe we shouldn't have asked you. 859-2-8-7. That's our phone number if you want to call and get on board. we have one minute to the break. Not enough time to take this call, so we'll get retired ref when we come back from the break.
Starting point is 00:28:15 We do want to say that UK graduation is this weekend. That details you a couple things. Stay away from downtown, unless you have to. Do not drive through downtown. But if you are coming here for graduation, come to KS Bar and Grill. We get a lot of people, a lot of families that come out before or after the graduation.
Starting point is 00:28:30 So it's an all-day event that's going to be going on all weekend. Yeah, I mean, it just completely takes over downtown. Congratulations, everyone graduating. We're going to have some, I guess, some of the basketball players, maybe go through it, grad students. I'm sure they probably will. We'll have pictures and all that on the website of any of the athletes that go through, but it's here for everyone graduating UK. Stay away from downtown. We're right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J., he'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:28:58 Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Drew, Shannon, Billy, Mario, the whole group's here. I got this on the aviation glass text machine. This guy obviously has my cell phone. My father was an orthopedic surgeon in Louisville. He said Derek Anderson's injury had to be misdiagnosed. He told me at the time.
Starting point is 00:29:21 He has never heard of an athlete ready to compete in two months post-surgery and will never see another athlete again coming back from an ACL injury like that. So we can't count on that for the Jaden Quentin's return. Well, maybe Derek Anderson has a second. just like a tiny tear. I don't know. I don't know what I'm talking about, but I'm just trying to make sense of it. Coming back after two months after an ACL tear, that sounds crazy. And those stories are legendary, how they were in Indianapolis at the Final Four, and it was on the Sunday.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Who did they beat on the Saturday? They played Arizona on Monday. Oh, goodness. I can't remember who they played on Saturday and won. Minnesota? Is that it? How do we not know? this. It's my favorite season and team.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Okay. This is the 97 team. Yeah. I don't know. I don't have it. Can't remember. Weren't you covering the team? Yeah, I was. That was 30 years ago. Yeah, I was 11. That's why my memories. Somebody was going to look it up. And so they practiced on Sunday, a full practice.
Starting point is 00:30:23 It was Minnesota. I looked it up for you. There we go, Minnesota. And Derek Anderson practiced on that Sunday in between the two games, full practice and was the old Derek Anderson, like practice lights out. and then Petino still did not want to play him in the Monday championship game. Although if you remember, he did let him go out and shoot two free throws. That made it worse. I do remember that very well.
Starting point is 00:30:43 I'm like, well, he's in now. Where's he been the whole time? Yeah. I wish he was shooting the free throws that Nasi Muhammad shot that night because Nasi was 0 of 6 and they got beat by Arizona. Could have been the rare college three, Pete. Could have been. 859-2-802-287. That's our Clark's Publishout phone number.
Starting point is 00:30:58 All right. We had some breaking news, Shannon, right before the show started today. Do you want the sounder? Well, sure. The TBT tournament announced that they are not going to be playing in Lexington this year. They will again be playing back in Louisville because the ticket sales went a lot more sold from the Louisville fans. They got $4,000. I mean, we still host the games are more on the road, but this is the regional final.
Starting point is 00:31:23 The regional finals. They're still Lexington games, but Louisville won the contest, those losers. They care a lot more than any other team in this because they don't have any other tournament success lately. but we will be heading back to Louisville if it gets to that point. But the first two games again would be here in Lexington. Howardman is three. I don't have this. I mean, everything that's been promoted and sold, it's still a memorial,
Starting point is 00:31:44 but there was a contest just for the regional final whenever you, just like last year. It was in Rupp for the whole first few rounds. Then they had the one game in Louisville. And they base it on total ticket sales. I want to say it was a race to 4,000 sold. And Louisville got it. Louisville won.
Starting point is 00:31:59 A little disappointing, Billy. A little bit, but that means Kentucky will have a win in Freedom Hall and then in the KFC Yom Center in a span of what a couple months. As long as Drew doesn't get sucker punched on his way out, I think it should be a good trip. That's the main thing. Can we wrap Drew and bubble wrap so he doesn't get punched again? No kidding. Yeah, I don't think it hurt you too much though. I mean, you kind of know sold them pretty well on that punch. Yeah, I can take a punch. I don't think they should have been allowed. It's not just me getting hit. I mean, those losers were the biggest losers to ever lose in that game.
Starting point is 00:32:28 I mean, Onahuaku's spitting on Nate Sistina. Fans won and everyone. where, I mean, they showed their true asses in a summer exhibition of guys who were barely, barely young enough to still play basketball. So I think they should have been banned. Of course they sold more tickets because they suck at the actual game. That's why they're getting a host again. But I wish the TBT should have said, no, you showed your asses last year and you're not allowed to host again.
Starting point is 00:32:50 Preach it. But I will go back and I will do the exact same thing I did last year. I will keep my Ls down for two hours, and they can bring it again. You know, it ended up being kind of a special win because you went, You beat Louisville on their home court. And they were so excited. They were so excited. They were talking so much smack.
Starting point is 00:33:10 All the, you know, the crowd majority of Louisville fans. Yeah. And so when you went on an opponent's home floor, it makes it a little special. Yeah. And I had my run in with that weak-minded human. But the spitting. Who spits? Who spits?
Starting point is 00:33:22 Who spits? A grown man in a basketball game. Halk and a loogie on his opponent because they can't handle losing. They should be good at losing. It's all they do. How have they not learned how to be? be gracious losers yet. Pope took the UK team with him over there to watch and support the guys. Saw them. Kind of cool. Thank God they were up in a box. No telling what would have happened to them around all those losers. But they did win this contest. Congratulations on finally winning something. I can't wait to see you there next summer. Losers.
Starting point is 00:33:49 Preach, Drew. I'm wearing body armor. So it's set up. We're going to happen again. Kentucky who takes care of business here at Memorial again. Wins those games. Yeah, we're going to take care. But we're just going to do it again. Beating Louisville is what we do. the Lexington games were in a interrupt, right? Did they announce that? It's a memorial. I announced that 20 seconds ago. I started. Sorry, I missed that.
Starting point is 00:34:11 We got the Harrison Twins. They added them. The Harrison Twins. We got the Harrison Twins. So we got Duran, Liggins, Harrison Twins, Willie, several more to come. I've heard a few rumors of who they're working. Well, what did you hear with rumors? Well, I don't want to say it just in case they have to bail.
Starting point is 00:34:22 There's a lot of scheduling stuff. But I know who they've targeted and had conversations with. We're going to be loaded again. But I'm glad the twins are back. It was a lot of fun watching them be a part of it last year when they beat those losers in Freedom Hall. I hope Sustina's back too. I don't know if that's been announced. He should be the number one pick
Starting point is 00:34:37 if we can get him. He took it so much more, well, they all took it seriously. I don't want to diminish the other guys, but he got so into it and he played really well. He was on the Kentucky team that got robbed and didn't have a tournament. So I think Nate was treating that like his NCAA tournament. He was the best player on the TBT team.
Starting point is 00:34:54 And Ennis's little brother. Let's bring him back. Bring him back. He was the other star. He's part of the family. We got Liggins with that Logdown, D. We'll go beat these losers again in Freedom Hall. So even though the news is a little disappointing, it still can make it just as sweet when you go there and win again this year. Yeah, it'll happen.
Starting point is 00:35:10 It'll happen. Mark your calendars. 859-2-2-287. Let's go to the phone lines. We got Greg coming up next. Go ahead, Greg. Hey, guys. I thought I'd chip on these ACLs.
Starting point is 00:35:22 I've torn mine. My two daughters have torn theirs. And there's not a coach that's ever going to play a player before six months is up. I mean, after two months, you can jump around, walk and run, but you put Derek Anderson in there at game speed, and he was going to ruin his knee. And if he could have played, if he was recovered, Patina would have played him. But it's a six-month deal, and somebody can prove me wrong,
Starting point is 00:35:49 but I don't think any players come out, come back before six months was out. All right, I appreciate it. Great. Thanks for the phone call. Yeah, that kind of adds to the mystery of that Derek Anderson incident. I mean, they were the best team, and then with him, they almost won it without him. So with him, you've got to think they would have beat Arizona and Miles Simon and Mike Bibi in that group. Is that the most famous U.K. injury that's cost them?
Starting point is 00:36:11 I know there's been some big ones, but is that, that probably adds a title, a banner to the rafters if his injury doesn't happen. Because it happened in January, you know, when they were making their big run. Was it 03? When Keith Bogan's got hurt. Is it 2003? 03, yeah, right before that sprained ankle he got. in the Elite 8.
Starting point is 00:36:30 In the Suite 16 against Wisconsin, they tried to play against Marquette in the lead eight. I still think we have a banner of Alex Poiters isn't hurt because Wisconsin doesn't, or we have someone to guard Sam Decker in that bunch. This is not a fun exercise. No. I mean, the Nirlins-Nuel injury boarded that season,
Starting point is 00:36:48 but it wasn't the championship run or anything they were making at the time. They go to the tournament that year easily. They're not in the NIT losing to Robert Morris. Was it PJ Washington, had a thumb injury, played through it, but missed all those free throws? Yes. PJ in the boot. That one with Cal was at his most. I haven't seen him. I haven't seen him. We were getting, I haven't seen him daily. But the PJ, he hits a couple of those free throws. They may beat Kansas State and end up in the final four. That's another final four they could have had. Half of last year's roster. Half of last year's roster. That's also a lot of list. Kurt Creasa. Absolutely. Jackson Robinson. What if he stays healthy the whole year last year?
Starting point is 00:37:23 Or you have Andrew Carr for that big stretch to change things? It's a fun game. Last year. Last year. was probably the most injury prone where it happened to more than one guy. You know, it had three or four guys go down, major players go down. It hurts when you got one guy, but that team last year, man, they lost so many key pieces. Yeah, I mean, losing Robinson, when you don't have them in the tournament, that's one of the biggest. There's been other individual injuries, but I can't think of a team that just had as many across the board. 859-2-2-8-7. We got Paul up next.
Starting point is 00:37:53 Go ahead, Paul. Yeah, on the ACL tear, if that... They had him doing hyperbaric oxygen treatments before and after surgery. He could very well be up on it and plan. It would increase the healing about probably four times. All right. Did they have that kind of procedure in 1997? Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:21 Okay. Well, maybe that's what they did then. It's just, yeah, it's a chamber that you go in 100% off. oxygen that's compressed and it takes your body's natural healing ability times a thousand. But to get there, you'd have to do, you know, 20 to 40 treatments, two-hour treatments, and you do them consecutively. All right, Greg, thanks to the phone call. Appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:38:48 I mean, the advances in medicine now, I'm sure it's helped Jaden Quaitens get ready. Is his tear as bad as Derek Anderson's tear? I have no idea. Yeah, I mean, I love the shooting for mid-September for full-com. contact, but I'm not going to write that down in Sharpie that he'll be a part of the team to start the year. That would be pretty impressive. He seems to believe it, Billy. He's been telling everybody. That's the right attitude to have. That's right. Yeah. And I'm sure that helps in the recovery process as well. If you have an optimistic mindset, then you're going to do everything with 110%
Starting point is 00:39:16 effort, Ryan. I'm surprised you were such an athlete. You didn't tear anything sliding into a base or never major injuries like that? Well, I was a fine-tuned athlete. You know, I was, you know, the elite of the elite that don't get hurt like that. I did break my finger, like during my senior year of fall baseball. I missed the whole fall season because I broke a bone in my throwing hand and my coach made me run cross country. You were on the cross country team? I was a Kentucky Wesleyan baseball player and cross country runner. Wait a minute. We've always known about these records you have in baseball, but I didn't know you were a two sports star. Yeah, my baseball coach who just turned 80 years old, we just went to see him Sunday. God bless
Starting point is 00:39:52 him, Denny Potts. He was also the cross country coach for a couple years. If you got hurt during baseball season, guess where your butt ended up? Running on the cross-country team. Stay in shape. So they're like a handful of us running cross-country for one year. Sound like he didn't have a choice. He needed to keep you all that condition. Otherwise, you would have been at brasses every night or whatever you were up to you. I think I ran in three meets and finished last or next to last in all three of them. So you're like simply joking. You're simply joking. Yeah, I was simply joking. You're so funny. All right. 859-2-2-8-10. We'll be right back. Ryan, Drew, Shannon, Billy. This is Kentucky Sports

Starting point is 00:44:22 Podcasts for wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. This Nickelback? It is. Yeah, this is back on the first album when they were really popular. Well, there's a documentary on Netflix. We talked about during the break about Nickelback.
Starting point is 00:44:42 I think it came out maybe a year or so ago. I just saw it just while you guys were off in Arizona. It's really, really good. Because it talks about how they were so popular. Then people started hating them. And it talks about how it affected those guys, you know. They were as popular as anybody. And all of a sudden it became a real hot, trendy thing to not like nickelback.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Well, that's because they were writing songs like this that were actually good to songs like this. And that's when they started to get hated. When they put out rock star and they put out photograph. But I mean, it's still a good song. I know. That's what I like. See? Well, when you're nickelback and you appeal to the rascal flat,
Starting point is 00:45:24 fans, I think that's why they got hated on. Ryan is right here. He can hear you. Rascal Flats, that's your other band. Yeah, I've kind of fallen off the Rascal Flats bandwagon because they called it quits. But I've always liked Nickelback. I never understood why all that nickelback hate that was going on for so long. But you're saying that's a good documentary I should go watch on Netflix? It's really good because they really get personal with the guys, how it affected them and their families.
Starting point is 00:45:49 Their kids would go to school and other kids would make fun of their dads and nickelback and stuff. You know, it's really good. Well, it all started with Creed. Creed was really popular. They got this treatment first. Then it kind of spread over to Nickelback after that. But now Creed's cool again.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Creed's cool with the TikTok crowd, the younger crowd. Well, I think Nickelback's cool again, aren't they? They're efforting. I'll put it like this. We started playing Creed again on QMF, and we didn't plan for years, but now we're back to playing Creed. But we're not playing Nickelback. So I don't know if that says anything about
Starting point is 00:46:21 either their popularity or our pro. programming. You know nickelback, don't you, Billy? Of course. And I don't know if it's people that just want free stuff, but when Shannon and I gave away Creed tickets, I mean, you would have thought we were giving away free money. Yeah, Beatles tickets or something. People are knocking down people trying to get through the lines. Well, I was hoping to go see Creed this summer, but now the Three Doors Down, who was not their opener, I don't know if they're co-headlining or before Creed, but he announced yesterday a cancer diagnosis, and Three Doors Downs done touring, and I'm sure that will affect the Creed concert at Rupp.
Starting point is 00:46:55 Bad news from what's his name, Shannon? Brad Arnold. One of the nicest guys you could ever be. I've had a chance to interview him a couple of times. Really good guy and really sad to see that come out. Very sad. Stage four kidney cancer. And they shut down the whole tour?
Starting point is 00:47:08 Well, for three doors down, I don't know if that. See, I just assumed that they were going to cancel the entire tour with Creed, which meant Creed wasn't going to play Rupp Arena. But I haven't heard officially if they're going to cancel Creed's part of it and maybe pick up another opening band. I'm not sure. There's like five or six bands. I've read some have already been canceled,
Starting point is 00:47:27 but they're hopeful maybe slide something in for three doors down as replacement. I'm not sure, but it's just awful news about Brad Arnold. There you go. Alice Bluegown can open up for them. Yeah, we play for sure. Yeah, we're going to be playing the Virginia. We just announced that KSR is going to be coming to Somerset, June the 6th, at the Virginia, which is this really nice old theater.
Starting point is 00:47:49 We're going to be playing there with the band. that night. Oh, that's cool. Yeah. So I'll be hanging out for the entire day and night, morning and, uh, and Owen, uh, not at Winsborough. That's, SummerSet. Yeah, Somerset. SummerSet on June 6th. Well, you played your new song earlier and I didn't catch it. Can you play it again? Well, you asked me to play it to set up this conversation we're having now and you completely ignored it. So no, no, no. I have ADHD. I forgot that. I only get one. Speaking of, speaking of concerts, a railbirds coming up in Lexington into this month, right? May 31st, June 1st.
Starting point is 00:48:20 Oh, you're asking? And you're telling you. We have the parking spots available for sale over at KS. Bar and Grill. So all you got to do is go to the KS Bar and Grill social media accounts. They've got the links there where you could buy a parking pass. And we're not going to let you just go in and park and walk over. You've got to buy a pass to park and walk over.
Starting point is 00:48:40 It's the best parking you're going to have. We get some good security out there. Good security. We got Griff. We had Griff. We had the OVW wrestlers out there that one year. That's right. No offense to them.
Starting point is 00:48:49 I thought Griff was a little more organized. His guys were shirts. A lot more organized. His guys had shirts on that had their security name on it. Both were great, though. Matt was out there one year. Pictacular and Immaculate Joe Mack. Slaping people's cars because they weren't going the right way.
Starting point is 00:49:06 But yeah, that is May 31st and June 1st. There you go. And the parking is really good. It is good. I'm not just saying that as someone with KSBarr. I've attended every railroad. And the one over Red Mile, it was a very short walk. and even just like leaving to go get lunch and a few drinks and get some air conditioning at KS Bar,
Starting point is 00:49:24 check on my car, you know, whatever you need to do, then head back over. It's very convenient. So go to the KS Bar, social media accounts. There's a link there you can sign up by your pass. Before we take our top of the hour break, I do want to bring up. There's a, there's been a movement in Kentucky where they're trying to get a one-year free transfer rule for high school athletes, where you could transfer from one school to another free, not have to sit out a year. Well, it looks like KHSAA and the people are going to shoot it down. They're going to stay kind of maintained with the rule they got now. If you transfer to school, you will be investigated.
Starting point is 00:49:57 If you can show proof of residence that you actually physically moved, or if your parents split up and you moved or, you know, there's some things you can do. But there was a movement, guys, to try to get a one-year free transfer rule. You could transfer anywhere you want for free and not be investigated or lose a year. You is the high school sports guy in the traditional. I'm sure you're glad they're not letting them move around. I am glad about that. I mean, I understand the world we live in and people are transferring, but if the family
Starting point is 00:50:28 physically moves to that school district, I don't know what you can do. And it's happening all the time, baby, for football and basketball. You know, I think you can transfer in tennis, golf, some of the minor sports, and not ever get investigated. But you do it in football or basketball. You will get investigated by the KHSAA. You have to prove proof of residency in that. school district. Was it Zion Harmon that seemed like he was at a different high school every other
Starting point is 00:50:52 every other month? Yeah. There's been some kids around here who've played for four different schools in five years or four years. What do you think about it? Well, I agree with you that I'm glad they're doing it. Well, it's no secret that private schools have an advantage over public schools because they recruit to their sports. Right. Right. Do they still have to sit out if a kid goes to a private school? I don't think so. I think you go to a private school. You don't have to have that sit-out rule. I don't think that's the case. Well, that doesn't seem fair for the public schools. So this would be a way to even the playing field a little bit,
Starting point is 00:51:21 but are we incentivizing you just going to the school that gives you the best chance to win a championship? Do we need to be incentivizing that in high school? Because they're, you know, St. X and Trinity and Louisville, they get kids from Indiana. They recruit. Like, let's not act like they don't. So it's like, do you want
Starting point is 00:51:37 the public schools to be able to get kids for maybe, with the transcers without setting out a year? It seems like it's plausible, but there's a lot a tradition that they'll have to get over. There's a lot of movement for it because the colleges now have it with the transfer portal. Right. You can go from school to school and not have to sit out.
Starting point is 00:51:54 Trying to try to me translate that down to the high school though, but looks like the KHSSA is saying at least right now. Ain't happening. Ain't happening right now. Maybe in the future, but ain't happening right now. All right, that'll do it for hour number one. We'll be back. Hour number two, 859, 280, 2287. We've got a draft coming up.
