Starting point is 00:03:06 Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Hour number two, Monday, May the 19th, right before Memorial Day weekend coming up. That's this weekend. A lot of people don't realize that. I didn't until we just said it. Including you, apparently. I thought we had two weekends before Memorial Day weekend. We do not. We are here in London, Kentucky, right outside the subdivision with the greatest storm damage. I do want to mention, though, there other places were hit. We mentioned Pulaski County, I believe Russell County.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And then there was one in the kind of central part of the state as well. So, you know, that was also a wild night. I will say, I saw the guy that Ryan Hall, y'all. That dude had a big impact. I think he was the very first person he and one or two of the weather people on TV to say that there was a, it was a tornado. They actually said it before the National Weather Service did, which is testament to those guys. I mean, that guy's sitting in his house in Pikeville streaming and really, I think, doing a public service for folks, right? Yeah, a lot of people tuned in.
Starting point is 00:04:19 I was watching Bill Meck, and you could tell his personality changed when he saw that. It started in Adair County. It's kind of when he picked it up. And as it went through Somerset and in London, you... On the ground for an hour and a half. That's amazing. That's amazing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:33 That is amazing. An hour and a half. They said you've got the satellite pictures. Now you can see a path through the Daniel Boone forest where that tornado went through. Yeah. I mean, you do, thank God, though. I mean, that it goes through a forest and not through, you know, towns. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Because that could have been even more horrendous. I was out of town, so I couldn't watch the local news coverage, but a friend texted me that he was watching Bill Mac and said Bill at one point was just speechless. Like he couldn't even believe what was happening. It was just so drastic. I think it registered at least an F3 and they are wondering if when it got to Somerset in London area they could have even gotten to an F4. They don't know that for sure, but it was an F3 for a lot of it.
Starting point is 00:05:14 I know we talked about this, but doesn't it seem like Kentucky all of a sudden is like Tornado Alley? No, they definitely are. I mean, there's no doubt. Tornado Alley has kind of moved from the Oklahoma, Kansas to he, year. And, I mean, you know, it has. I don't know how anybody can doubt that. I mean, this is going to be, I think Bashir said since 2021, we've had 14 federally declared natural disasters. That's amazing for our little state to have to go through that and keep getting, taking punch after punch after punch. But the tornado thing is particularly bad because these houses, a lot of them are not built
Starting point is 00:05:52 because we were not in the So like I was talking to someone who's in construction Who said houses since 1990 were built up to code But a lot of the ones built before that We were not considered part of the tornado Basically alley at that point So a lot of them are not built With the standards you would build a house today
Starting point is 00:06:15 Not that it could have withheld stood this But still that makes it worse in some ways That in Oklahoma I guess former tornado Ali, I was reading up on this yesterday. A lot of that was just land. Like there weren't even communities around where they would get hit often. And obviously, as we're seeing here, this is a very populated area. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:31 859-280-2287. Who's up next, Shannon? Paul. Paul, go ahead, Paul. Hey, just want to say you guys are doing a great job covering this situation. I'm calling because I'm down in Russell County, but I've been through this twice in my life. We lost two homes to wildfires. and what these people are in for, you know, in the next several weeks and months, no description can really give justice to what they're going to have to deal with.
Starting point is 00:07:05 So, you know, I wanted to say that you had mentioned clothing might be something that's getting in the way, but having been through this, I would encourage clothing, water, and emotional support for the people, because that's going to be the most difficult thing that they're going to be dealing with in all of this. Paul, I think we may have lost connection with the guys. But yeah, they're just saying don't bring any used clothing. That's what they're asking for right now. If you have new clothing, you can bring that. But yeah, they're going to need a lot of help from the community.
Starting point is 00:07:35 I know they're going to get it too. So, Paul, we appreciate it. I'll try to get reconnected with the guys. 859-280-2287. I'll tell you what, let's go ahead and take a break. I'll see if I can get reconnected with them. Otherwise, you're just going to listen to me, Babel on. So we'll try to reconnect with the guys out there.
Starting point is 00:07:51 and we'll take your calls coming up next here on KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:08:09 breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games,
Starting point is 00:08:26 from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. SportsSlice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsClyce on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Starting point is 00:08:44 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field
Starting point is 00:08:57 and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them
Starting point is 00:10:02 and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WMBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star, Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but. Don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it.
Starting point is 00:10:20 An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning.
Starting point is 00:10:43 It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets.
Starting point is 00:11:16 the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:11:54 Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Just so people know, we got disconnected and we didn't know. We had like a three-minute conversation that none of you heard. I thought it was a great conversation. I thought it was some of the best conversation we'd had about. We talked about UK baseball just gone. Well, into the ether. But we're back now. 859-2-8-0-22-87. I missed, I guess, Paul's call. Sorry about that, Paul. One of the things I did say, though, is I had a couple of people asking me how they could come see us.
Starting point is 00:12:29 I think this probably is not the day to come see us, just because the traffic on this road is such that getting here, I think, would be very difficult for folks. So I would say, you know, come see us. We'll be at the Mount Laurel Festival on Friday. You can come now or come then. But Mario is out walking around. around, you know, he was saying to me, like, never seen, like, you know, this is a completely different world for him. And he was just like, you could see emotionally affecting him.
Starting point is 00:12:59 And this, these are not city streets to this neighborhood. They're like just single lane neighborhood streets. Yeah. We got to keep him clean for the relief workers to get in and out of here. Yep, that's exactly right. We're standing here looking out and he came and put his arm around me. He was like, this is just so sad, man. I can, I mean, I can see it.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Like, it really is sad. And you don't feel it until you're here. I mean, it made me, when I came Saturday, you know, like I said, that'll be a scene I remember my entire life of Saturday. I mean, it's awful now. Don't get me wrong. It's still awful. But Saturday, you could just feel the area still experiencing like the raw emotion of it. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:39 I mean, you could stand there. There were people everywhere, like people everywhere. I think there were family members still at that point trying to figure out what was going on, like where they were. their family was, and it was like I said, I mean, that's one that I'll, I'll remember for a long time. I mean, it was awful. It was awful. And I, you know, I walked around and I talked to some people and then, you know, people are just in shock. Like it's just, it's, you know, their lives will never be this name.
Starting point is 00:14:08 That's the thing about all this that really sticks to me. People's lives will never be the same in the short term when you lose everything. You know, we drove when we first got here, you said, turn here. And when we turned, the air got sucked out of the car. We were all speechless. None of us said a word just looking at it. It is so horrifying and very, very sad when you see the people that have lost everything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:32 All right, so just switching gears for a second, then I'll go to the phones. 859, 280, 27. We did have a two or three minute conversation that none of you heard about UK baseball. Great conversation. They got swept. But D1 baseball. are we still here before I have this conversation again? Yeah, we're on.
Starting point is 00:14:48 We're good. All right, D1 Baseball has them qualified still for the tournament, and not even as one of the last four-in, right? That we will be in the tournament. They play Oklahoma. They got swept by Vandy, but they play Oklahoma in the tournament, SEC tournament tomorrow. They play them tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:15:09 You feel good that we're going to get in? I feel good now. I think the sweep of Oklahoma probably got them in, and they played Vanney. They had two of the three games, one, going into the ninth inning, I think, on Thursday night and Saturday night, just couldn't hang on. But now they play Oklahoma a team. It's got a top-10 pitcher that you just beat.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Now you've got to try to beat him four times in a row. But they won't pitch him because he doesn't have the rest yet. Yeah. So, I mean, they'll get somebody up. This will be a midweek starter game to start. And then they would pitch their best guys like Wednesday or Thursday. Is it still first round is one and done, and then it goes double elimination? No, it's changed.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Everyone is now in the tournament, and it's single elimination. It's single elimination. First time this year. I guess we've got to stick to the script from our three-minute conversation. But going back to the weekend series with Vandy, to lose the way they did, that was just crushing. I hope they have a little more luck going to the postseason to lose, especially Thursday, when you led for the entire game, led by five twice. Down to your last strike. Yeah, then lose on a walkoff.
Starting point is 00:16:05 So maybe their fortune will reverse into Hoover. I gave the stat. There have been 30 SEC games, Shannon. UK's played in. they have led at some point in 27 of the 30 games, and yet they're 13 and 17 in the SEC. It's got to come down to the bullpen, just not be able to hold the fort down.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Just some bad life in the bullpen, yeah. But listen, Mingeon, I said this before, Mingeon told me at Chapoelais, he thought this was going to be a major rebuilding year. So if he gets them in the tournament, that's a plus. That's a plus to me. Also, Shannon, the Reds are back.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Yeah, I see that. Well, sweep. Completely back. Back on board? Sweep of the Guardians. Summer Valley's back on. It's also the summer of Willie Benson as well. He's on fire right now.
Starting point is 00:16:52 One four straight. Remember I said they need to go four and two in their homestand. I didn't think it would be lose the first two to the White Sox and then sweep first place Cleveland. Now you get a pitchback coming up too, though. So you're going to get a good shame. But without Paul Skeens. He pitched yesterday. So we don't even have to play.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Play against. So, but we've been losing to the bad teams. That's a problem. We beat the good teams. the bad teams, but the Reds are back to being the best team in the league. Just so I'm prepared, how long is this summer valley going to last? Let's see what happens at the series against Pittsburgh. And then they play the Cubs who are in first place.
Starting point is 00:17:23 They play at home this weekend. So this is kind of a defining week. This is one that'll have to look in the mirror and talk to themselves about if it doesn't work. Ryan, I'm going to predict on Monday a week from today. Well, we won't have a show. On Tuesday, a week from today, the summer of the Reds will be over. I'm done with the Reds. I'm done.
Starting point is 00:17:38 They're out. They're over. But they're 500 now, 24 and 24. I went to the game Friday night, and it was a big win. You know, their bullpen pitched 17 innings in those three games this weekend. Only allowed one run in 17 innings. That's pretty good for a bullpen. Maybe the UK can get some tips from that bullpen.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Will Benson, four home runs. I got to listen to the call of all three. So there's this website that'll do the Reds TV, Reds Radio, and then the TV and radio from the other. team for big plays for the Ritz. For Will Benson's fourth home run in three games, the Guardian's radio broadcast, the guy just goes, Will Benson's up? Are you kidding me?
Starting point is 00:18:25 They threw him a slider again, four home runs, four sliders. And then Shannon, he goes, I don't know what the scouting report on Benson was, but throw it away and burn it. You got to love when your Homer broadcaster says that. The Homer Broadcaster was like, what are you all doing throwing him the same slider four times? I really like that. You know, we have to watch 162 games, Drew. Sometimes you're probably like, all right, I've had enough of this.
Starting point is 00:18:56 And I like when my broadcast team has the emotion like that. The neutral parties, that's no fun. I want to feel the frustration of the joy from whoever's calling the games. And then finally, Mike Keynes made the Easter Conference Finals. A big win against the Capitals. They now play the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals. This is big for our franchise. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for us, too,
Starting point is 00:19:20 and we're still finding our way in, play the Panthers, the defending Cup champions, but we're still cane-tastic. So I guess you're going to Miami to watch one of the games? Well, so game one and two is in Carolina, but it's during this week, so I can't go. Then game three is Saturday, but it's in Miami during Memorial Day weekend, feels like. Oh, you should go. Miami during Memorial Day weekend.
Starting point is 00:19:44 I don't, I can't, like, I can't all crypto bro in Miami this weekend. That sounds like a party. Like, why would you not want to be there? It sounds, first of all, I can't even imagine what the hotel rooms would be like in Miami during Memorial Day weekend. I was there last year in Fort Lauderdale when the Panthers won. They get into it down there. It was a wild scene when they won the cup. Game four is Memorial Day night.
Starting point is 00:20:07 I need to be here. If they get to a game seven, it is in Raleigh, and it is that next weekend. And if we don't go to the NCAA tournament, then I might go to a game seven. Maybe we can do a double-head or baseball if it is. Coastal Carolina is. Oh, you know what? If they play Coastal Carolina, we can maybe drive up there for game seven. Everything's on the way when you're driving.
Starting point is 00:20:29 It's all. That's true. Everything is just a matter of if you want to get there or not. So go Cains, go Reds, go U.K. baseball. my teams Ryan are trying to make are doing well the reds are just fortunate they're in that weak division with the Cardinals and the Pirates and the Brewers are all kind of average baseball teams Nobody asked you this is the well I'm a Cardinal fan I'm still talking about the summer Valley who's next Shannon it's good a Raven Raven go ahead Raven hey it's uh it's uh
Starting point is 00:20:57 raven fields from Pikeville and uh we just went through all the flooding on February 15th and going through something like that, I just wanted to call in for just a second, and I really want to commend our governor. I do not agree with his politics at all, but I tell you what, every time I see a natural disaster in our state, and now I have witnessed one and been part of it,
Starting point is 00:21:27 our home was completely messed up through the flood, and I just want to commend. our governor because as soon as anything happens, he's one of the first ones on the ground. And again, you know, politics aside, just knowing that we got a governor that does everything possible, he did the same thing here in Pike County to get funds available, get FEMA on the ground. and I just wanted to commend him publicly that I appreciate that, and I know a whole lot of other people do also,
Starting point is 00:22:10 but also just to let the folks in London and that surrounding area. I've been a pastor for over 30 years. I just want them to know that they're in our prayers and just put their trust in the Lord. I don't know anything else that we can do. Just pray for it. God bless you, man. I really appreciate that call, and you're exactly right.
Starting point is 00:22:35 I mean, at the end of the day, this is a, you know, if you're a religious person, which I am, that's really all you can do. Because you do look at things like this and say it feels so, you know, I felt this way when I was in the eastern Kentucky during the floods in 2022. And you just feel like it's just unfair. It's just unfair, and it keeps hitting regions like Brethick County and Pike County and Laurel County and, you know, out in Calloway County and Dawson Springs. It just, it doesn't feel fair, and it's not, but that's really all we can do. And on that point about the governor, you know, I've always liked him. I don't know him well, but I've always liked him. But he, Ryan, is at his best in these moments.
Starting point is 00:23:25 and I've watched him. I watched him do this in Brethick County and those, and I watched it Saturday. The way he comforts people in these situations. And this isn't with the camera on, right? This is just him walking around. I just think is really commendable. You know, there's, it's easy to get caught up in politics
Starting point is 00:23:45 of what your position on this stance is. But on some level, especially when you're a state official, it's just about making people feel cared for and doing what he talked about about getting relief. And Kentucky, and I think a lot of people deserve credit for this. How Rogers deserves credit for this. Mitch McConnell deserves credit for this. Ram Paul deserves credit for this and Andy Beshear.
Starting point is 00:24:08 They have got, Kentucky has gotten federal relief quicker than almost any other state in all of these. There are still states that have had issues that can't get relief for various reasons. But Kentucky, and in part probably because those people are, known in position. I mean, Hal Rogers is the senior guy on appropriations. Mitch has been the Senate leader. Annie Beshear, you know, has, I think, done a really great job. Like, Kentucky has been able to get relief, and I think that will happen probably here earlier than it would in other places as well because of that. Because like you said, they work together in a situation. They really do. I think they really do. I think you can, you can feel really good about it,
Starting point is 00:24:47 even if you, even if one of those people I named is somebody you don't like. Right. There is an advantage to having that connection. And I think there's an advantage sometimes in Kentucky with the Republican, federal people and the Democrat being the governor, that we have connections to both parties, right? So whoever's in charge, you can actually, I mean, it's just natural. I think they get attention quicker. So I really do commend them.
Starting point is 00:25:15 And I do think, I mean, listen, man, Anna B'Sheer took office and two months later we had COVID, and we've had 14 natural disasters. I mean, it's kind of unbelievable what he's had to deal with. I was just thinking that from when Andy started, he could not have imagined all the things that have been put on his play, the tragedy. It really is unbelievable. Who's next? 8-5.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Okay, a couple open lines. 859, 280, 2287. The, you know, the interstate is right here. One of the things that's happened, and I get, I understand this, is people kind of, they can't help but look as they go by, and it really has bunched up. It was really like that Saturday bunched up the interstate. bunched up the interstate because you can see this damage driving on the interstate. Yeah, it comes up on you all of a sudden. You come back and all of a sudden there's a big gap in the trees.
Starting point is 00:26:02 You see these trees that are missing all their upper limbs, and now you realize, oh, that's it. So you want to take a look at it. Well, yeah, I mean, right here, that used to be trees. Yeah. Okay? I mean, that used, look, there's trees going all the way down in the direction. This gap right here, which is a major gap, which looks like it was intentional,
Starting point is 00:26:21 is from the storm. We've been sitting here. I didn't even register that that was kind of the top of the path on this hill here right there at the interstate. So you're driving on the interstate and all of a sudden you see that. Natural instinct is to look at it. I mean, there would have been a time that this neighborhood would have been, you couldn't have really seen it
Starting point is 00:26:37 from the interstate. And now the trees are all cleared out and actually you can because of it. Looking around, the cleanup has really picked up since we did our lap before the show. I mean, it is active all around the place right now with people, some look to be middle school kids all the way through the big electrical trucks showing up. Yeah, this definitely, as you can see, literally since we've gotten here, you can see the community has come here in large numbers.
Starting point is 00:27:06 That's probably a guy from the London community right there with a truckload full of just debris and lumber, just getting it out of here, just hauling it off. Yeah, that's another thing you think about. Where do they take all of this stuff? Like, I guess a landfill or something, but like this is going to be. be a lot of stuff to take everywhere. I also think it helps in Kentucky. We got a lot of blue collar workers with trucks just ready to go and get over here and help. You've seen like Ryan just point out, that guy just filled up the back and wherever he's taking it, he's getting it on out here.
Starting point is 00:27:34 I do need to ask you about your car. Why? Shannon, I don't know what the legal limit of tent on your windows are. Yeah. But whatever it is, Ryan, there's no way your car. like passes the law. I'm going to take the fifth. It is Josiah's car.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Oh, well, that makes it better. Yeah. In his age, you got to be cool. Have the 10. But, I mean, you can't. Chenin, I was standing right outside the window. You can't see it. Can't.
Starting point is 00:28:07 At all. We thought we were getting in a random car this morning. No, I thought I was about to be kidnapped. I mean, I was like. Even on the front? We're talking the front or just the sides? The front you can see. But the sides, you can't see.
Starting point is 00:28:20 anything. He picked us up at Matt's, and Matt and I weren't sure if that was Ryan in the car. Yeah, I didn't know who it was. From what I understand, that's as dark as you can get without being over the limit. Says who? Says the people. Says the people. Did you go to a professional place of business, or did you go to someone's house? I went to Sheller Automotive. You don't have to say the place. But they, they... I mean, if you say the place and they... I trust them. They're good people. Maybe more people go get Tending windows there.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Or who go get ten windows there, yeah. Because it's up to, it's not over the legal limit, but it's like pushing the, pushing the quick close. I'm going to throw the challenge flag. I can't imagine what would be darker than that that could be on a window. Draft Kings, you could go to Draft Kings, bet $5, get $300 if you hit your winning bet. It's draftkings.com. You can do the games. Eastern Conference, Western Conference Finals are all starting now.
Starting point is 00:29:14 It is Draft Kings. It is your place to place the wagers of a lifetime. And then you could use the money to go and get your car. Eljabular restrictions apply for additional terms, responsibility and gaming resources. See dkng.c.com slash audio. We'll be right back. This is KSR.
Starting point is 00:29:32 T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is the KSR in London, Kentucky at the Family Dollar. people have started showing up with the boxes and the plastic totes. So that's good.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Seeing a lot more of those being brought by. It made sense what Senator Strums was saying. They're trying to load things up because the rain coming in. These roofs, a lot of the roofs are gone or have big gaping holes in them, trying to say what they can. 8.59-280-2287. One person writes, Matt you are going to be at the Mount Laurel Festival. Is Alice Bluegown playing? Are you playing, by the way?
Starting point is 00:30:14 Not that one, but we'll be in Somerset the weekend after that. So we will be playing that Friday, June the 6th in Somerset at the Virginia. Okay, good. There you go, playing in Friday. That's what I like to hear. A couple more things, and we'll go to the phone here. Prayers out to former President Joe Biden diagnosed with prostate cancer, an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
Starting point is 00:30:37 He's 82 years old, and that just came out. So prayers up to him and his family. The aggressive form of cancer, they said it's already gotten into his business. bone. I mean, that's scary. Yeah, that is scary. They got some treatments, I guess, they're trying to analyze and see what they will work for him. Yeah. I mean, you would assume as a former president probably gets the best
Starting point is 00:30:57 treatment that you can get, but that's, uh, that's very sad. Definitely. Cancer is awful, awful, awful. I had family of them who would go through prostate cancer. Yeah, it is, it's terrible. On a completely different note, I watched the first of a
Starting point is 00:31:13 three-episode series that has kind of captivated me. I'm not going to lie. Okay, what is it? It's called Bin Laden Manhunt on Netflix. It's number one on Netflix. If you get on there, you'll see it. But it's just about how they tried to find bin Laden. And I have to say, it was a lot more into it. You know, you watch that movie.
Starting point is 00:31:30 You just think, well, they just dropped into that house in Pakistan, and there you go. But the first part of it's about 9-11. There's some stuff I didn't know about 9-11. I also didn't. I mean, I don't want to spoil it, but there's a lot. They go into some specifics that I had never heard that I found really interesting. Have you seen it yet? No, I started to turn it on last night, and I had to be up very early this morning.
Starting point is 00:31:51 I'm like, I don't need to get locked in there. When you start, you're going to keep going. I knew exactly what would happen. But I've seen enough clips. I'm very interested. I might even do that tonight, but it looks good. Yeah. So it is very, very well done.
Starting point is 00:32:03 I'm just through, I'm only to 2003. So, you know, they did it in like 2011. So I'm still got eight years of, but basically, I didn't know in like 2002, 2003. they had him cornered. They were like on top of a mountain and they saw Bin Laden in like 800 of his people below. And they bombed it
Starting point is 00:32:27 apparently thinking they had wiped them out but they had underground caves and a bunch of them got away. And once they got away, in the caves they had no idea where he was and it took him years to find him again. So they saw him. Like they saw him from the top of a mountain
Starting point is 00:32:41 in like 2003 and they asked, according to the CIA, of people, they asked the defense department to send people in Marines. They said no, and so they felt like they had to bomb him to have any chance, and he got away in an underground cave system. Is this show going to end with the Rock explaining his tweet? I don't know. It's a good question. It's a good question. I would be interested in learning how that was, but they said they thought they had him, and then when they went down to look at everything, they saw that he had created in like a year, this cave system that got him out.
Starting point is 00:33:13 Well, eight years, right, to try to find him and get him. From there, yeah, from there I have eight more years to get him. But that's where I am right now. Good hiding places. Yeah, apparently they said George W. Bush had a cabinet meeting after 9-11, where he said something like, all right, where are we going to get these guys? How are we going to find Bid Laden? And they looked at the defense secretary who was Donald Rumsfeld.
Starting point is 00:33:38 And he said something like, in order for us to invade Afghanistan to get him, it will take about six months. And Bush apparently said something like, that's too long. And then the guy in the CIA, who's this dude that is kind of the main interviewer and the thing, he goes, you give him six months or you give me six weeks, I'll have his eyeballs to you in a platter. Oh, my goodness. Now, it did only take him 10 years from then. That's the attitude you want to have.
Starting point is 00:34:04 Well, apparently then Bush looks at him and goes, I like it, which you can totally see him say. And then he put the CIA in charge of it because of that. There were some bad dudes that pulled that off. I'm sure there's a lot of cool. Anyway, it's a cool thing to see. 859-280-2287. Who's up next? Derek.
Starting point is 00:34:20 Derek. Go ahead, Derek. Hey, guys. I just wanted to say my thoughts and prayers are with all the people in London and Somerset and the surrounding areas. I'm a local associate pastor here in Lexington, and we sent a crew of men and women, and we joined with another church out of West Liberty, and we combined a crew to come down there to put hands and feet on the ground to help out.
Starting point is 00:34:52 We just want to show the love, and we feel their pain. Well, that's very kind of you. And since the senator was on, I've gotten a couple messages that that Operation Center, which is next to Calvary Baptist Church, they do, if people, people want to come, they do have things for people to do. They would just ask that you go there first before you just show up somewhere unless you know somebody. So yes, but I do think, you know, today, if people are in a drivable area, today is kind of the day. And I keep seeing, and I appreciate the call, I keep seeing these Amish people.
Starting point is 00:35:37 Like, I don't know where they're from around. There's not a lot of Amish people right here, are there in this part of the state? I'm not aware of an Amish community close by. Not in this neighborhood. But I mean, that's, I don't know. For some reason, that's really touching to me to see all the Amish people here. Because we've seen quite a few of them since we've been here, including kids. It's right.
Starting point is 00:35:57 Yeah. In those, because you can tell by the hats, right? That was one of the first groups we saw in our driving around right in the middle of a pile digging through it to try to help out, whatever they can do. Yeah, let's switch to sports for a second. Shannon, we got some breaking news. You want to go ahead and give me the thing? Yeah. Draft Kings has put out the first line of the year for Kentucky football, Kentucky and Toledo.
Starting point is 00:36:22 Shannon, you didn't hear us talking about it. We already did. So you want to take a guess as to what Draft King says the line is for Kentucky Toledo? I'll say Kentucky six and a half. Wow, you are definitely not confident in Kentucky to chair. What are they got? Six and a half. I thought this was.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Well, I mean, I keep hearing about how Toledo could. beat us. I mean, six and a half doesn't feel like a crazy number. Well, it's 12 and a half, which I thought was a little low and disrespectful. Well, Shannon would have been much more disrespectful. What do you think about 12 and a half? Well, we had this conversation last week and I said it'll probably be around 17. You know, normally these first games, it's 20 something. You know, you're trying to cover a big spread and make a few dollars get behind the cats, but seeing 12 and a half for a non-conference opponent like that, that's not the most comforting number. 12 and a half.
Starting point is 00:37:12 Where would you put your hard-earned dollar? That's a good number because Kentucky has trouble covering this first game. They always win, but it's always like you said in the 20s and they don't cover. So would you go Kentucky or Toledo? I take the fifth. He wants to say Toledo, but we know how negative he's been, Shannon. So now he's hesitant. Obviously, I would take Toledo because I thought six and a half.
Starting point is 00:37:37 So, I mean, I still have to take you winning. What about you? down on the cats as much as anyone, but at 12 and a half, I think I'd have to bet them and just hope the Calzada experience gets off with a great start. That's a low number. A good Calzada with hot sauce. And if they don't cover, we got bigger problems than the money I would lose on that spread. That's true. Yeah, maybe so. How about the preteness? Oh, it was an awesome race. Awesome race. Yeah, after we said nobody would watch it, Shane, and it ended up being awesome. Journalism. It looks like, you know, there were some rubbing and racing there right there.
Starting point is 00:38:11 That was, who was in the wrong, do you think? The guy that came over or a journalism's jockey for forcing his way through? It's kind of like a zipper merge. I don't blame journalism now. It was a zipper merge, but he didn't let him zipper merge. He was like, no, you're not getting through here. To me, that's what made the race entertaining, was that move. Well, yeah, but it's dangerous.
Starting point is 00:38:35 I mean, those horses could have fallen. Could have. Just a little bump. It was like Benny Snail busting through the line of scrimmage. Just get out of the way. Let me go, baby. Yeah, it was quite a thing. And then he basically almost came to a stop and then started back and found another gear.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Yeah, I'm not a historian on racing, but that's got to be one of the more exciting finishes. I would think so. I've never seen a comeback. There was that year, what was it, a Fleet Alex almost fell. Do you remember that? Have you ever seen that one? I don't remember it. Go back and look.
Starting point is 00:39:04 I don't remember what race it is. One of the Triple Crown races, a Fleet Alex, like almost goes to one knee and comes back and wins. And this is probably the thing that's most like that. I don't think you'd catch it. Yeah, with 50 yards to go on, he doesn't have a prayer to catch him that horse, and somehow he caught him right there at the wire. Caught him right there at the wire.
Starting point is 00:39:23 It was a good call, too, the pretenance guy. Very exciting. That preteness guy was great. He was like, like you read in the newspaper. He got really that dude's good. I don't know his name. I don't know his name. That dude is really good. So now are you more likely to watch journalism versus sovereignty in the Belmont?
Starting point is 00:39:39 Yeah. Yeah. Each of one-1. Yep. You know, they came down to the wire at the derby. Now they're going to go head-to-head again. They each have one win. I'm going to, I probably would watch it where I wouldn't have before if this hadn't happened. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:49 I found out, by the way, next year, the Preteness is at Laurel, not at Pimlico, because they're tearing down Pimlico and building it back up. And the Belmont's in Saratoga. So this whole, we can't move the Triple Crown races because of tradition. Next year, two of the three. And the Belmont's not even the same distance next year. And this year. Belmont's not a mile and a half. half. It's a mile and quarter.
Starting point is 00:40:10 So all this about, oh, we can't change anything. They're changing two of the three races next year. The tracks and one of them, the distance. But don't you dare change the date? Don't you change the date? Don't you change the date. Don't you change the day. Do not you.
Starting point is 00:40:22 I agreed with Randy Moss. Randy Moss said we have, and not Randy Moss a football player, the other Randy Moss. Straight cash on me. We have a way to fix this. And I think he said we are handcuffed. We are self-hand-cumping ourselves by tradition. I like that line. And that's a guy who is the biggest proponent of horse race.
Starting point is 00:40:39 that there is. All right. Tell me about Stockton Morton. You know, let's be honest, Matt. Mortgages can be confusing. So Drew, Stockton makes it simple. They explain everything in plain language. No jargon.

One person writes, Matt, I watched the Manhunt documentary, and one of the things I thought was interesting was that it was all the warnings,
Starting point is 00:46:07 We had about 9-11 that we ignore. We had a lot. There was a group in the CIA of, and it ended up, it was all women. And they worked specifically on al-Qaeda, and they had warnings for six months. They said, saying we might get attacked by planes. They're planning a big attack, and they said they kept going to the CIA and FBI heads, and it just never got passed up the chain. It's not a good look.
Starting point is 00:46:31 Yeah. Apparently, they were somebody that walked into one of the offices, and they had stacks of paper. This was like three weeks before 9-11. Somebody goes, where are all those stacks of paper? And he says, I want there to be written proof that I've tried to warn people about this. Oh, my goodness. Wow. So, yeah, that makes you.
Starting point is 00:46:49 The worst terrorist attack in our history, and we had a little heads up on it. Yeah, there is. Also, you know, when you watch it, George Bush comes off like a little bit reckless in terms of stuff. But he also delivers a line I'd forgot about, which is when he speaks to Congress right after 9-11. He gives a line that's a pretty amazing line. He goes, we will bring who did this to, uh, we will bring who did this to justice. And if that does not happen, we will bring justice to them. It's like, whoa.
Starting point is 00:47:21 I think it's a pretty good line. That's a pretty great line by who, by former president books. Yeah, they're probably in their caves and get that clip. Like, uh-oh, we're in trouble. Well, I mean, that was one of the things is they couldn't figure out. Remember, he would put all those videos out and they couldn't figure it out. They finally figured out where he was at one point by looking in the background, one person, like, dip their shoulder in, and by the shirt they were wearing, they could tell where they were. You're kidding.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Yeah. And if not for that, they would have had no leads. Yeah, they get those. I remember seeing those videos, and they were no idea where they were recorded. He didn't know it was being recorded, and he just walked in, and that shirt had a logo of a team that was in a town, which is where they were. You're kidding. So, interesting stuff. Who's up next?
Starting point is 00:48:04 Ryan. Ryan, go ahead, Ryan. Hey, this is Ryan Henderson with Jackson Energy Cooperative. We're the power provider for the area impacted by the tornado. Just wanted to call in and give an update. Okay. You know, I mean, you guys are out there. You've seen the extreme devastation that our members have experienced.
Starting point is 00:48:26 And as a co-op, you know, we're in the community all the time and just wanted to let everybody know we've got well over 100 personnel out in that area today. working to rebuild back. You know, we've got poles and wires that are just totally gone, totally missing. So we're starting to rebuild process back and we'll work around the clock to get people, get power restored to that area to those that can receive it as quickly as we can. I just wanted to give a shout out. You know, we've got first responders.
Starting point is 00:48:55 Lyman that are working around the clock. They're tired. And just a shout out to all the hard work that's going on to help people recover. Well, thank you for that. And we see these trucks everywhere. So we appreciate all you're doing, and thank you for coming. Mario has been walking around the neighborhood for the last couple hours. So while we've been doing the show.
Starting point is 00:49:16 So I want him to hop on. He just walked back. Mario, you've been walking back there for the last couple hours. You've never even been down here. What you thought of what you saw? Absolutely devastating. Absolutely devastating. It's pretty hard to put into words of what I see.
Starting point is 00:49:34 but like everything's completely destroyed pretty much. And I think that really stood out to me the most is the people. It's still strong. They know I've talked to a few people down there and, you know, they described it as a nightmare. I was the main thing. You know, they said that this is absolutely like a nightmare. And then for me, as like a 25-year-old dude, being able to come here and see this, it's another example that proves like tomorrow is not really promised.
Starting point is 00:50:02 You don't know exactly what can happen in the future. So you got it. You can't take your life for granted in general. I can tell over the last few hours, this has made you kind of emotional, hasn't? Yeah, absolutely, man. I always hear about tornado warnings and all this, but, you know, I'm not going to say I don't take it seriously or whatever the case may be, but we get them so much. It's like, you know, it's a part of life. But to actually see these people, you know, experience this and go through this, you see how serious the tornado can be.
Starting point is 00:50:32 destructive it can be like in general you were walking past through the neighborhoods as people are cleaning up was it is it just a sad yeah it's sad it's absolutely 100% sad I mean you people these people are telling me how like they had someone you know they were stuck in rubble like like their legs were almost cut off and you know they came together with their family and they had to sit with them in passing like like as he passed away like someone sat with the person with their legs under rubble wait a minute you talk to someone who they sat with their family member as they passed.
Starting point is 00:51:05 Yeah, yeah. Their neighbors and family member and their legs were covered, like they were in rubble. I wasn't there. This is what they're telling me. And their legs are covered under rubble, and they sat with them as he passed. Like, it's those type of stories that just, like, blew me away.
Starting point is 00:51:22 Really hard to put in the words in general. You just got to be thankful for life, man. You never know when life is going to hit you like this. Yeah. Boy, that's awful. Well, appreciate you coming down here as well. Thank you, Mario. And listen, thank all of you who have written over the last couple of days
Starting point is 00:51:39 who are asking, you know, what do you what you can do and all of that. And as we said, we've given in the short term, hopefully there'll be more things as we go. Final thoughts, guys. Well, as Mario said it, you know, you have to have a tragedy like this to remind you, but just appreciate what you have. You know, we all complain about little daily problems, but, you know, There's bigger things that out there that are much more unfortunate and tragic. Hashtag London Strong, man.
Starting point is 00:52:07 These are some proud people, and they will regroup and rebuild and be better than ever. Yeah, and my prayers to everyone around here, not just in London, but Somerset and the other areas. You know, this is, we will fight through this and we'll be here to help however we can. But, you know, when you go to bed tonight and you say your prayers, keep these people in mind. because there's a lot of them, and it's going to be a long, long time. And as with all these tragedies, we'll go away, we'll go on with our lives, but it will still be a part for these folks for a long time. So thank you folks for indulging us while we came down here at Senator Brandon Storm,
Starting point is 00:52:47 and we will see tomorrow. We'll be back at the bar. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
