Starting point is 00:02:40 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, June the 2nd. I am Matt Jones. It is a beautiful day. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line 859-280-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass. The text machine is 772-745254.
Starting point is 00:03:03 And this is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law of us. If you call T.J., he'll make them pay. I kind of consider, Ryan, usually people say after Memorial Day, for some reason when it turns to June. That's when I consider summer, like June, July, and August. And even though the weather hasn't totally felt like it yet, I feel like we are entering the summertime, officially in my mind today. Well, I think you're going to get your wish. It's supposed to be in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:03:30 the next three days, so the summer is going to kind of rush in pretty quick with June, so maybe you're dead on about that. It is, yeah, it's supposed to be beautiful after, I think we had more rain from January to March than, like, in the last 50 years, but hopefully the summer is better. Drew is in Lexington with Ryan, Shannon is in Louisville. Guys, it was a, I don't know, disappointing weekend. Well, oddly, I guess it goes back and forth. the UK baseball team loses last night in an absolutely heartbreaking game.
Starting point is 00:04:03 They lost 13 to 12 after being up five runs twice over the course of the game. They had gotten up 6 to 1 and 12 to 7 and end up, even though it was 12 to 7 with 2 outs in the 8th inning, they give up 6 runs with 2 outs on the board and end up going down 13 to 12. It is the 12th time this year. they have lost by one run. And to give you a sense what that means, if you add the previous four seasons combined, they had lost by one run 12 times. And they lost by one run 12 times this season as well.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Just a brutal loss after a weekend where on Friday they get a game they probably should have won against West Virginia and they lost. Then they come back, beat South Carolina upstate, beat Clemson in a game where they scored a thousand runs, and then the West Virginia game. West Virginia makes it to the Super Regional's. You know, Drew, we don't end up usually following UK baseball with the specifics that we do other teams during the season. But I watched a lot of this weekend. I watched at least some of all four games
Starting point is 00:05:14 and watched a ton of last night's game, which took, I think, nine hours. What did you make of the entire experience? Like everyone, disappointed by the finish last night. night, but what a long day of baseball yesterday with that double header. I felt like both games took forever. I watched just about every pitch of both. My whole Sunday was Kentucky baseball.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And that last one, it just sure felt like they were about to give us a Monday game and still be in the fight. You have Birx hit the solo home run in the eighth. It felt like you're just adding to that cushion, feeling in a good spot. You're up five in the top of the eighth, and then the wheels just absolutely fell off. Kind of a fitting ending with the way the bullpins kind of let them down all year. They've blown a lot of leads like that. It's kind of the way the season ended.
Starting point is 00:05:56 It's kind of how the season went all year. So crushing loss when it felt like they had another game in them, they were about to handle West Virginia last night. They ran out of pitchers. I mean, ultimately, I think that's the issue. And that's what happens when Ryan lose that first game, right? So they went into that game last night, having played one more game than West Virginia.
Starting point is 00:06:16 They got some good fortune in both the early game and the late game that their starters were able to go a little bit, you know, especially in the early game, go longer. But then when things started falling apart, they really fell apart. It's sitting there with two outs, and all you need is one more out, and they just can't get one. And I didn't know in college baseball, I don't know if this is true in the majors, Ryan. Is it true? Like, you can just bring people in when it's with, like, it was 3-1 at one point on the count,
Starting point is 00:06:46 and then they brought a different guy in. Can you do that in the majors? Oh, yeah. You can make a pitching change at any time in the count for sure. Sure. But you're right, man. The series was lost at that first game Friday. You had a 3-0-0 lead. You had your best pitcher on the mound. You couldn't hang on and win that one. So you had to use a lot of arms against upstate and against Clemson and then against West Virginia.
Starting point is 00:07:05 So the debate is now, Matt, should they have put Cleaver back in last night just to stop the bleeding? I know they were saving him for today, but you got to win the game first. Would you have put him in last night just to try to stop it? So you and Shannon would know this better than me. So Cleaver's their ace. let's say they put him in and he pitched an inning last night. Is there any way you could have pitched him today or a starter's arm? I mean, again, I know that's not what happens to you in the majors,
Starting point is 00:07:31 but they're looking at long careers, though, for those guys. If you had put him in for to get that last out in the eighth or to pitch in the ninth last night, would you have been able to use him today or just no? I think you could have. Managers won't do that because they have to go through the process of warming up their arm and going out there and throwing, you know. If you're throwing 10 or 15 pitches, why can't you come out and throw another four or five innings the next day?
Starting point is 00:07:55 I would think that you could do that? Ryan, I know it never happens, but could you? Is that a way, or is it just like you just don't do that? Yeah, Shannon said it right. He could have gone today, maybe only gone two, three, four innings. Wouldn't be able to go a lot, but I think you could have got a little bit out of him. That's why I think, man, just to stop the bleeding, you've got to win that game once night. Put him out there.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Pitch the bottom of the eighth. Close them out at the bottom of the night. You're playing today. Well, they were set up to really have a shot, but they didn't get it. And so then when the game was over, that led to Drew, and we all should be honest about this. I'll be honest about it as well. What ends up happening in these college baseball playoffs is a lot of us, and I'm in this group, go from we don't watch most of the year, and then all of a sudden we're watching every game
Starting point is 00:08:45 and we have strong feelings about things. right that's now there are people out here listening who've listened to them all and their feelings i completely understand but then you have people like us who will come in at the end have strong feelings and last night online a lot of negativity about the game i take the view they replaced from a college world series team their entire starting lineup except for one guy they lost their entire weekend pitching staff from last year and only brought back a handful of guys on the roster period. Basically, one starter out of their entire nine-man lineup and all their starting pitchers.
Starting point is 00:09:26 And the fact that they were in a place where you could argue we should have won both games and could be in the Super Regional, I think as a compliment to Mingeyone in the year they did, it felt like to me some of our fans were very angry about it and kind of, and it just sort of said to me in today's world, it becomes impossible to please people if you expect that this year Drew to be significantly better than this. Yeah, I mean, they're playing for a regional championship. You've got to be happy with that. I'd say most of the frustration is just that you're up five in the eighth.
Starting point is 00:10:01 Maybe if they lose from the beginning, it doesn't hurt as bad. But overall, I think you've got to be pretty proud. Heck, you scored. Dang, your 30 runs yesterday alone. It's just you just ran out of pitchers. You all said, that's the whole story when you're bringing outfielders in to try to close out a game. they used five pitchers in the eighth inning when it looks like West Virginia would they bring in their starter from Friday?
Starting point is 00:10:20 Brought in their ace. Yeah, in the ninth. I mean, Kentucky was just trying to throw together what they could, and that's how it looks like it was a win-s-and-so-I-south. I just think the way they lost is why people are so frustrated. So, Ryan, you would make the argument if West Virginia felt like they needed to bring their ace in, Kentucky could have done the same thing. Yeah, but, you know, like I said last week,
Starting point is 00:10:39 I think this is the best coaching job M-Gione has done since he's been here. Even does it take away what they went to the World Series last year. he did this year is pretty amazing. So I trust him. They know a lot more baseball than I do, but when your ace is sitting over there and the bleeding is heavy bleeding, you've got to stop it somehow. And I believe I would have brought him in. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:56 All right. So you, they get, I think, Drew, a lot of these guys back next year, right? I mean, am I correct? Now, of course, you could lose some people in the portal. But they get a lot of these guys back next season. Do you expect that to happen? and for them to be, you know, much, much better even next year? Yeah, they have a lot of young pieces.
Starting point is 00:11:19 You got to keep Tyler Bell, you know, he was a draft prospect. He got drafted and chose to go to college. I don't know what his thought is for next season, but I'm sure he'll have opportunities to look at other places. You've got to make sure NIL is in order. But then in this series, that Hudson Brown, I don't know how close to you all are paying attention. He hadn't really played all year, and he came in and had a huge weekend. Yeah, he did.
Starting point is 00:11:39 At one point, he was like four for ten with a double, home run, several RVI. got to see a little piece of what he can bring too, but a lot of young talent, a lot of young pitchers that will still be on the roster moving forward. The worldwide Todd Harris' kid? Leighton. Nate? Is that or what's?
Starting point is 00:11:54 Leighton. Nate's two Harris's. Okay, two Harris's. Leighton. Late pitched the last inning against Clemson. Yes. Close them out. So a lot of positives coming out of it.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Let me ask you, Shannon, you and Ryan, what do you think about the way Kentucky plays? They've played like this for a while, but I don't think it's ever been on more display than it was this weekend. I mean, it is, you know, Clemson had seven errors in the day game on Sunday. West Virginia had five, so that's 12 errors. I looked at the box scores of all the other games that you have played yesterday. Nobody had more than two in a game. And Kentucky made it to where they had 12.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Now, I don't think that's just a coincidence because they're running everywhere. They just put the ball in play. hope you will screw up. They steal. Do you like this style, this kind of small ball style that Kentucky plays? I love it. You know, it's a little bit of old school baseball that you really don't see anymore. You know, when's the last time you've seen a bunt in Major League Baseball? I haven't seen one. I don't think all season. But, you know, they play aggressively. They put pressure on the defense. And I think that's why you see so many errors from the other teams. I feel like this is a Rine Lemon system, right? Like, isn't this what you would do? If you were, if you were in college baseball,
Starting point is 00:13:13 I feel like you would have committed to Nick Mingeyone to play the way they do. 100%. I love it. That's the way I played. That's the way I think it should be played. And they put the pressure on the other team. And look, like you said, they committed 12 airs in two games. I think it's just like Shannon said, a lost art of baseball that most teams don't play anymore. It's all the power game.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Try to just hit the long ball all the time instead of putting the ball and play, running, taking the extra base and doing things like that, put pressure on the defense. I will say I probably watched collectively more college baseball. Drew, in these three days. Just in terms of watching all the various games, they had this thing on ESPN Plus called Squeeze Play, where they just went from game to game to game, kind of like Red Zone for college baseball.
Starting point is 00:13:56 I enjoyed it. The crowds are exciting. You get to see teams you would never see. I mean, Murray State won two games in his playing today. I think it gets Ole Miss for a chance to go to the Super Regional, but they will Murray State won their first two games. I really enjoyed watching them and they're, you know, cheering on the racers. I kind of think the way college baseball does their playoffs, making it double elimination.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I actually think it's awesome, and the one and two seeds are both out, which doesn't happen in the other major sports a lot. So I love it. Yeah, it's a lot of fun. I'm watching more than I've ever watched, too. You have six more regionals tonight, winner take all games. Last night, I don't know if you saw, but Tennessee lost on a walk-off walk. Wake Forest had bases loaded in Tennessee through four straight balls to lose and extend that in Knoxville.
Starting point is 00:14:46 So there were some other close and wild finishes around the tournament last night too. Yeah. It's weird to me, Shannon, that these baseball, like that you can have a Murray State beat Old Miss and Georgia Tech back to back. Murray State had not won a tournament game since 1979. And then they win two back to back and are playing tonight for a super regional. I mean, Wright State knocks out Vanderbilt from the tournament. Baseball is such a random sport like that that you can get those results that I actually think it makes it wildly entertaining.
Starting point is 00:15:25 It just comes down to pitching matchups, I think, more so than anything, in baseball. You know, it depends on who you're starting. And that a lot of times, it depends on how the starter, you know, if he can get, you know, go four or five innings in the game, or do they have to turn it over to the bullpen and make a bullpen game out of it? So much comes down to the starting pitchers in these games. It doesn't really matter. Like a right stake could come in and beat Vanderbilt like yesterday.
Starting point is 00:15:50 They are too long, though, these games. A game last night was like five hours. You have to pack a lunch and a dinner to watch these games. They are so long. And I say this with all due respect. Sometimes it's clear some of these announcers. Drew, they've got people who this, like they only do it one. once a year. They bring them out for this weekend and they have to call every game and you
Starting point is 00:16:14 could tell sometimes they are struggling with things to say at the end of these games. That is it's got to be a tough haul doing nine hours a day of college baseball. They're doing their best and whatever it is that's extending these games in the postseason. It's not helping them at all, especially yesterday I felt like UK played baseball for 16 hours. Maybe they did, but it was just all day long. All day. It was a long day. Unfortunately, Kentucky doesn't get the victory.

And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:18:07 Quarterback on office blue with 42 Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to wave at her What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I actually drop better when I'm high. It heightens my senses, calms me down.
Starting point is 00:18:34 If anything, I'm more careful. Honestly, it just helps me focus. That's probably what the driver who killed a four-year-old told himself. And now he's in prison. You see, no matter what you tell yourself, if you feel different, you drive different. So if you're high, just don't drive. Brought to you by NHTSA and the Ad Council. Why is everyone obsessed with romance right now?
Starting point is 00:19:02 Like everyone? Your co-worker who, quote-unquote, doesn't read, is reading romance. Your mom, book talk. The entire internet. I'm Sanjana Basker. I'm Tyler McCall. And this is Radio 831, a romance podcast. The books, the tropes, the adaptations, the drama, the discourse.
Starting point is 00:19:25 And what all of it says about how we actually love, yearn, and obsess. We're going to Weathering Heights. Which, for the record, is not a romance novel. And yet it has haunted the romance genre for 200 years. We're getting into dark romance, age gaps. Certain Russian hockey players. And sentient objects. In love, which is a thing.
Starting point is 00:19:47 That's the kind of conversation we're having every episode. Listen to the Radio 831 podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Text machine 772-745254. Wimberson writes, Matt, it's not the season any result in upsetting. It's that the team found ways to lose the safe.
Starting point is 00:20:14 type of games all year. Again, look, I'm not going to claim to have followed the team well enough to know the, you know, the talent level, et cetera. But Ryan, I saw a ranking on the athletic going into the NCAA tournament that had the top 150 draft prospects playing in the NCAA tournament, and Kentucky didn't have one of them. Okay? I mean, there wasn't even one person on the list. That tells me that we're not exactly, you know, beaming with talent.
Starting point is 00:20:43 why that is is probably a combination of the fact that they went all in last year. I'm not sure that our NIO for baseball is what it is what it is in a lot of these other schools. But that's partially, I don't know why you can get so upset. Part of the reason they lost one-run games is they just didn't have quite enough talent to beat a lot of these good teams. At least that's how I would see it. Do you agree or disagree? No, I agree. I think you can make a good argument that they actually overachieve this year with all the young talent,
Starting point is 00:21:11 the new faces they had, replacing all that talent. talent they had from last year's team to lose 12 one-run games to be leading in like 22 of their 25 losses, whatever it was, something like that. I think maybe you could say they kind of overachieve this year with what they had to work with. If you look at, if you add up all of their SEC games and then these four games that were in the NCAA tournament, Drew, they led at one point in their SEC and postseason games in 31 of the 35 games. That's really crazy. And that's an amazing stat.
Starting point is 00:21:46 They were at 15 and 19, but yet they led in 31 of their 35 games. These are the best teams in the country. The SEC teams are leading. That's a crazy stat to me, Drew, if you think about it. Oh, definitely. Obviously, not finishing games. And as you said, I don't know they're in IL either, but you've got to load up on some pitching. Bullpen just let them down in most of those opportunities where you'd go up early, get a big lead.
Starting point is 00:22:11 your starter would play well, and when he goes to the bench, they just couldn't finish getting it done. So that'll have to be where they add moving forward. But they were scoring the runs they needed to all year. Just couldn't finish. Our Kentucky-branded most controversial text of the day, one person writes, Matt, we have the winiest fans online who comment, and it's completely obvious they have no idea what they're talking about.
Starting point is 00:22:35 I saw multiple people say Mingio can't get it done. They do the same things with stoops. They did the same thing with Pope. Why do you think this is? Well, I mean, some people are just trolls, and they're going to say that about anything. But I do think, Ryan, the online world has become much more unrealistic as to what teams can do. I mean, let's just use UK baseball for an example. We've really been bad our entire history.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Honestly, I mean, we've been, there's no doubt Minji owns the most successful baseball coach Kentucky's ever had. He's been to the Super Regionals three times. He's been to the College World Series once. We had never been to the College World Series. Ryan, how many times have we been to the Super Regional before MIGO? I think just one, yeah, one, maybe two? One or two times in history. He won the SEC?
Starting point is 00:23:29 Yeah. We won the SEC, which is, you know, almost as hard as winning the whole thing now. I don't know what people, let's be real about what Kentucky baseball is, now. I mean, of the 16 schools in the SEC, would you say our support in terms of attendance, etc., Ryan, in the SEC, are we, is Missouri the only team we're ahead of, probably in that regard? Probably so. I mean, baseball is a lot more important to a lot of the other schools. I think it's probably more important to 14 of the schools. Yeah, yeah, for sure. I mean, even Vanderbilt has substantially more support.
Starting point is 00:24:10 in baseball. So, I mean, you're looking at a coach who's probably, now, I mean, look, when we've been good, like last year, the fans get on board. But if you're just talking about, like, regularly following and it being a thing, we're probably 15th. We're 15th or 16th, maybe, when it comes to history, because Missouri used to be good at baseball a long time ago.
Starting point is 00:24:35 So, Drew, I, you know, what do you expect him to do in some ways? Like he's created. I can't remember what. I went to the one UK baseball series when we hosted. Who was the coach then? Cohen, many, many, or was Mingione even the coach? When we played NC State here? No, it was Cullen or Henderson.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Gary Henderson, one of those two guys. I think it was Cohen. I mean, that was a long, long time ago. And besides that, Drew, I'm not sure I'd ever even been to a UK baseball game. So the fact that Mingione has made this to where it's even a topic, I think is amazing. I think that might even been Min Gione's first year the one you went to over at the bed.
Starting point is 00:25:14 I don't think I'm not sure if I'd ever been to a game before Mingio. Yeah, he got him started right away over there. I think that's the one you went to when Cal was there. Everybody's cleaning up the bleachers in the rain. Well, Cal was there, yeah. So that was Mingioen was the coach. You're right. Yeah, his first season.
Starting point is 00:25:30 No, they're definitely at places they've never been for. They've won the SEC for the second time. He's got the record for most wins a year. Went to Omaha. I guess you're allowed a down season and playing for a reason. regional championship is still pretty respectful. You finished better than Clemson, the host. Heck, we're on the bubble going into the selection show.
Starting point is 00:25:46 So you at least play a little bit above your seed line. It's just the, I think most of the anger is still being up five in the eighth and how it did not be overall. But when you say down season, a down season, it would have been like the best season we ever had. Yeah, they made third year in a row. The first time ever made the NCAA tournament three years in a row. I guess down from the past year, which was a huge year. I know you can't hold that. That forever.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Yeah, so I have to say I almost have no patience for the, like, state of the program people after this. I understand being frustrated about the result of the game and how it ended up happening. Who's up first, Shannon? Bubba. Bubba. How are you, Bubba? Fine, fine, doing great.
Starting point is 00:26:29 And I'm like you, Matt, these people that complain, it's the best up, it had not been for last year, this would have been the best season in Kentucky baseball history. but, you know, they're going to complain regardless. Yeah. But the coaching staff is there every day with them, and they're going to put what they think is to put them in the best position to win. So, but my reason for calling today is I got a trivia question for baseball. Who threw the first no-hitter for the University of Kentucky?
Starting point is 00:27:05 You could say, you could say, Shannon, Sparky, McGee or something like that. Like I have, there is, I would have absolutely no idea. So tell me, so tell me the answer. I got a guess. Okay, wait a minute. Ryan has a guess. Go for it.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Jim Host. No. Is that your answer for everything? Wait a minute, hang on. Just say, he just said Jim host. So confidently. Because he, because that's exactly right. He's scared of Jim Host.
Starting point is 00:27:33 He guesses Jim Host for everything, right? Who's the first row, best rower in Kentucky history? Jim host. Jim host. The answer is that really. Yes, KSmart Trivia. What eight world leaders once met together to end World War II? I think you had Jim host, Rob Bromley.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Okay, so what is the answer? Okay, I've been friends with this guy for probably 30 years. You got 10 seconds to say his name. All right. Tommy Bannon. Tommy Bannon. Good guy. 19-1 against Georgia State.
Starting point is 00:28:07 There you go. Tommy Bannon, getting a shout out on KSR. We'll take a break. Be right back. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Starting point is 00:28:23 Welcome back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Text machine 772-75-25-4. We had never made Ryan the Super Regionales until MNGO, just for the record. So, never made it. Like you guys said, first time ever to the College World Series, first time ever make the NCAA tournament three years in a row,
Starting point is 00:28:43 and he did it this year when I have only one starter returning. Yeah, we could have played LSU if we had been able to win this, although I think even they, did they? They lost to Little Rock. They played tonight. Little Rock was like 20, like had a losing record going into the terms. So Little Rock still has a chance today, right? Yeah, that's one of the six games tonight.
Starting point is 00:29:02 LSU has not gone a little past Little Rock, so we'll see if they get to the Super Region. I had Ryan John Wall on my ESPN show yesterday. So, you know, we're doing this thing all summer, guest the Wildcat, where they just bring on former Wildcat. Surprise me every week as to who they're going to get. And I thought Ryan John Wall was a pretty good get by my producers. That's a really good get, yes.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Heck of a get. So we had John Wall on. You can listen to it. If you go to the Matt and Myron podcast, you can listen. It's on hour three. He comes on. It was a great interview. Well, honestly, I talked mostly about UK because if you can have a national radio show,
Starting point is 00:29:45 why wouldn't you just Shannon talk about UK basketball on the national radio show? But in the conversation, I thought he gave one piece of news. He said that Mark Pope reached out to him and has asked him to come to Lexington and play pickup and work out with the team. And he's going to try to do that for a few days this summer. and then I later found out in some conversations later in the day that Pope has done that with many of the NBA guys, that they are basically hoping to recreate what Cal had here, Cal had here before COVID. This kind of ended after COVID, but before COVID during the summers, you would get a lot of these guys back in the summer and they would play pickup.
Starting point is 00:30:27 That happened a lot in 14, 15, 16, 17 around those times. and Pope apparently re-trying to do it, and Wall said he's going to come and play against, you know, Jalen Lowe and all those guys this summer. That made me very happy, Ryan, to hear, and it's got to be great for the, I mean, think about for these players, if John Wall, their childhood, the kid they watch playing as a player they watch play as a kid,
Starting point is 00:30:54 comes up and plays with him. What a great recruiting tool it is, too, when you come in for a visit, and there's John Wall and out, you know, scrimaging with the guys, they're shooting it up with some of the good devon booker i mean just all the NBA guys that have Kentucky connections if pope was able to get them to come back he absolutely should use that his advantage especially in the recruiting world and wall also said drew what what we heard
Starting point is 00:31:16 uh Andrew Harrison say which is that he watched a ton of the games last year again uh which you know my biggest worry with pope was will he be able to keep the connection to those cow guys were they cow guys or or like would they kind of stay watching Kentucky, and it is clear the answer to that question has been they will still be Kentucky guys no matter what. Definitely, and I was like you, that was my biggest concern. Cal marketed the program to have that NBA connection, and Pope brings completely entirely different approach than that, but I love that he's maintained those relationships. He's popped over to playoff games. We saw the picture with him and Carl recently, a picture with him and Rob Dillingham. It's good to know that there wasn't any kind of friction in the changing of the eras there, because it could have gone the other way.
Starting point is 00:32:03 could have just ridden with cow and not like the move but most of them have been very supportive very supportive so uh very cool that wall will be back and i kind of want to be at those pickup games wouldn't you what is shannon watch see how the guys do i mean the that like the jlin low versus john wall i know wall's not played in a while but i still think it would be fun to watch it's about colin chanler dunking on wall when's that video going to leave out yeah take a guess how much money John Wall made we found out yesterday in salary in his NBA career. Okay, so I just want, just think about in your mind what you think John Wall made. Remember, John was very good.
Starting point is 00:32:42 I don't think he ever made an all-star team. I think he was. I think he was close. I don't think he made an all-star team. Maybe he made one, I'm not sure. But just take a guess, right? How much do you think John Wall made in his NBA career? 200 million.
Starting point is 00:32:59 Okay. What do you think, Drew? I heard, so I know the answer. Okay, Shannon. I'm going to say 80 million. Well, add it up. $280 million. $280 million.
Starting point is 00:33:12 He made $280 million. Wow. Not a bad life. And you know what's crazy is? Some of these dudes playing right now will double or even triple you're right. You're right. I mean, it's insane. I do need to ask you one more question about your Sunday show yesterday.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Yes. I heard the doof and smerts segment. Yep, me too. So you heard it? I heard it. You were extra dofen smurtsy too, I think, during that segment. It stood out a little more than the John Wall, honestly. It did.
Starting point is 00:33:46 Well, what made it stand out? So we had the guy who does the voice of doof and schmertz. He and his partner were on. Why did it stand down for you? Because I thought you were extra dufen smurtsy there for a while. Tell me why you do it. Barry the Pantibus, you know, like that. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:34:04 He only gave me a B plus, though, on my impression. And I felt like Drew was worth more than a B plus, I have to say. Oh, I completely agree. I thought you got Rob there. I really couldn't tell if they were hitting a button from the cartoon or if that was you doing it. Well, they did. I will say, if you listen to that interview, right, they did play me saying it versus him saying it back to back. And I felt like it was almost exactly.
Starting point is 00:34:27 the same, to be honest with you. I thought it was dead on. I thought the recording of it was definitely better. Absolutely. It was funny. It was a funny segment. Yeah, they were. And for my friend's kids,
Starting point is 00:34:39 that's the coolest I've ever been in their eyes, was having the Finneas and firm guys. Like, that's the only time they've ever cared what I did. Well, you kind of broke some news. I didn't know they were going to re-bring it back. Yeah, well, I don't think it broke news. I think that's why they were on the show was promoting the fact that it was coming back.
Starting point is 00:34:56 It wasn't like they just, shit, and they didn't decide during that interview to say the show was going to be back Thursday. It was like, this is the first time anybody's going to find out this Thursday it's coming back. He broke news to Ryan, though. Yes, he did. I didn't know they were coming back. If Ryan doesn't know, then I guess it's breaking news to him. That's exactly right. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:35:14 Chris. Chris, go ahead, Chris. First time, long time. Who I? Good. How are you? Go ahead. Good.
Starting point is 00:35:23 Hey, you were talking earlier about. playing baseball all day long. Well, this story will be a particular interest to Drew. Back about 1970, the Lafayette generals played the Madisonville Maroons in the state baseball tournament. Oh, okay. After seven innings, the scores tied five to five. They go extras. I don't remember what extra inning it was, but Lafayette goes up 10 to 5.
Starting point is 00:35:53 Madisonville comes back, scores five, it's 10 to 10. Oh. Finally, in the bottom of the 22nd inning. Whoa, 22nd inning. Madisonville scores the winning run to win 11 to 10. Wow. So this was what year, sir, 1971? 1970, 71 right about in there.
Starting point is 00:36:21 Okay, did you play in the game? what made you remember this? Well, my brother was on Lafayette's team at the time, and I remember skipping junior, I skipped school during junior high to go to the game over at Cliff Hagan Stadium. So 1970, 71, 22 innings, do we think, does Corey Price know the answer? Is that the longest high school game in Kentucky history?
Starting point is 00:36:45 I would think it's at least in contention. I think if it was longer than that shit, and they'd have just told people to go home. If it wasn't in the state tournament, I feel like that would make. Well, I appreciate the call. That's 1970. Wait, wait, wait, Matt.
Starting point is 00:36:58 Well, wait, man. All right, it's not a novel. I got to just go quick. No. All right. Lafayette's pitcher, Vic Travis, through 19 and two-thirds innings that day. Arms were built different back then. They were.
Starting point is 00:37:14 And he never was able to walk again after that. All right, well, thank you very much. He cannot even pick up his groceries now, unfortunately. Wow, 19 and two. I like how it's two-thirds, though, but they decided after, they decided, Drew, you know what, we can't finish the 20th. We need to go ahead and bring a reliever in for this one, yeah. His arm fell off midgame.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Yeah, Mattisville, as long as it takes, we'll get it done. Congratulations. Apparently, Wall did make all-star teams. He did. Well, Martin's the only, he made five. Yeah, barely more than one. That's a lot different than zero. Don't tell, don't tell John, I got that wrong.
Starting point is 00:37:50 Five's a lot. Okay. All right, that's the only time Mario's ever entered a fact check on me, so I knew he was probably not happy. Summer's almost ready, so enjoy your favorite outdoor activities without pain or stiffness. Go to court physical therapy. That's K-O-R-T.com to help you get you moving again. No medications, no injections, no surgery, just helping you feel better. Let's say you pitched 19 and 2 thirds.
Starting point is 00:38:15 Court.com will get you back to where you're ready to go for the night game the next night. It's K-O-R-T dot com, courtdill.com, the power of physical therapy for both Lafayette and Madisonville. We'll take a break and be right back. It's Kentucky Sports, right? Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source,
Starting point is 00:38:48 the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context,
Starting point is 00:39:04 and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slic Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:39:22 This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this guy, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:39:41 Quarterback on office blue with 42. A rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. I actually drop better when I'm high. It heightens my senses.
Starting point is 00:40:04 It calms me down. If anything, I'm more careful. Honestly, it just helps me focus. That's probably what the driver who killed a four-year-old told himself. And now, he's in prison. You see, no matter what you're not. you tell yourself, if you feel different, you drive different. So if you're high, just don't drive. Brought to you by NHTSA and the Ad Council. Why is everyone obsessed with romance right now?
Starting point is 00:40:34 Like everyone. Your co-worker who, quote unquote, doesn't read, is reading romance. Your mom, book talk, the entire internet. I'm Sajana Basker. I'm Tyler McCall. And this is Radio 831. a romance podcast. The books, the tropes, the adaptations, the drama, the discourse. And what all of it says about how we actually love, yearn, and obsess. We're going to Wuthering Heights, which, for the record, is not a romance novel. And yet it has haunted the romance genre for 200 years. We're getting into dark romance, age gaps, certain Russian hockey players. And sentient objects, in love, which is a thing.
Starting point is 00:41:18 That's the kind of conversation. we're having every episode. Listen to the Radio 831 podcast on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. You know, Chin, facts are optional here.
Starting point is 00:41:36 You know that. I mean, we may say, Wall didn't make an all-star team, but he made five. We also may have a caller who called and said, what did they say the person's name was that threw the first no-hitter in UK history? What was his name?
Starting point is 00:41:50 Tom Bannon. Well, it was not Tom Bannon. It was Jerry Sharp, who threw a no-hitter in 1959. Oh, 1959. He threw a no-hitter against Tennessee. I'm going to read you the first paragraph of the story, okay? Okay. Sharp posted his third win of the season against no defeats.
Starting point is 00:42:13 The Brooklyn, Mississippi lad, got stronger as the game progressed, fanning the last six ball batter, batters he faced. I love that he called him a lad, Drew. The Herald leader used to call the UK baseball players lads. That was a gentlemanly time. Yeah, back before bloggers ruined journalism. Some of the old game reports, I've gone back and read old Kentucky basketball stories. They write the game recap so different than what we have now.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Yes. Also, congratulations to Mike Hal, who had the second no-hitter at UK, pushing Tom Bannon further down the list. So Tom Bannon was third. You know, the next thing we're going to find out is Tom Bannon didn't even throw a note or else there wasn't even a person named Tom Bannon. It was, well, so Jerry Sharp first. Who was second?
Starting point is 00:43:01 Mike Howell. Mike Howe. And then Tom Bannon allegedly third, although we do not have proof yet of him being third. 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, I agree with you about having Wall and those. guys back, but do you think the current players even know who John Wall is? Of course they do. Although I would note if you were Jasper Johnson, when John Wall played at Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:43:35 you were three years old. Three. Well, that's why a lot of the guys now, they talk about their favorite players that they grew up watching were Devin Booker. Three years old. Everyone knows who he is now, but we're getting into dangerous territory where there might be a recruit in a few years. Not know who he was.
Starting point is 00:43:55 It's getting close. Yeah, I mean, they would remember him from his NBA days. Right. That's what they... Definitely not UK day. But they wouldn't remember him from his UK days. You're exactly right. But they would remember him from his NBA days.
Starting point is 00:44:09 Drew, how did you hear or did you go, like, how did Railbird go there? I mean, I heard that there was a massive traffic issue last night with people getting now, but just in general, did you hear it went well? I did not go, but I feel like I was there just based on social media. I even, like, you know, searched for it and just saw a bunch of random videos and pictures. Look like they had a great crowd. Jelly Roll last night seemed to have a lot of fire on stage. Lots of fire.
Starting point is 00:44:38 What do you mean? Just like actual flames on stage. It looked like he had a big production. But overall, I don't know if it was the turnout of years past. I'll have to see final numbers on that. But, you know, they did the aerial photo, and it looked like a lot. another good crowd out there. Yeah, it looked like they had a lot of people.
Starting point is 00:44:55 I think, you know, just by looking at the parking we had at the bar, Sunday, we basically filled up in pre-sales for Sunday, Saturday. Got some, it was not totally full, which makes me think there was a bigger crowd, Ryan, on Sunday than Saturday. You know, they still have an issue over there with parking, though. I mean, like, they just don't have places for people to park. You know, we have a lot. But again, if you don't know before, a lot of out-of-town people don't even know to do that.
Starting point is 00:45:26 But, you know, there were people, I was hearing stories of people parking like at the mall, at Fayette Mall, walking all the way to real. I mean, that's like a crazy walk. But if you just think about it, if you don't, there just aren't a lot of places, honestly, over there to park. Yeah, there were people, I know, up and down Versailles Road just parking like in the McDonald's and walking over, so I'm sure it was that way everywhere. I tried to stay away as far as I could, but you know, my son worked it.
Starting point is 00:45:51 And he's like, he told me he said it was a massive crowd there both days. Well, good. Did you know Fayette Mall has paid parking now, by the way? What do you mean? Fayette Mall has paid. Yeah, there's like QR codes to pay to park just in the, it's only the front few spots. It's VIP parking. Oh, yeah, I've seen that.
Starting point is 00:46:06 Yes, yes. That's becoming a thing. I noticed, like, who's going to pay to park at Fayette Mall? But it's out there. It's like the top five or six months. Shannon, let's say it's Christmas season. No. And it's either, you, like, you know, back of the day, you used to be at Fayette Mall during Christmas, you might not even find a place to park.
Starting point is 00:46:24 You wouldn't VIP park for $5? No, I'd rather walk a half a mile. And it's not because I can't afford it. It's just the principle of it. Like, if you got free parking and I think a mall should have free parking, then why wouldn't you just use that? You probably paid the $5, I'm sure, right? No. No, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:46:44 There's a principle to it. Yeah. There's a print. There are certain things that I won't pay. Like, I mean, like parking tickets, you know that. To me, just there's a principle. That's a little different principle. Yeah, that's a different principle. You know, it's weird because you're right. Like, I would pay a lot to park. I don't know. That's a psychological thing. So if there's a lot for a game and it says it costs $25 to park for the game, I don't love it, but I'll do it. but if it is a free parking lot and for whatever reason it's not free then in my mind i'm mad about
Starting point is 00:47:20 that and they shannon it'll get nothing you know let's just say hypothetically you were in ville colorado and there was one parking garage that charges a hundred dollars a night and there was one right next to it that was free i've seen you pay a hundred dollars to go to the one that you actually that was that was that was because ryan told me the only one there or no drood told me the only one that existed was the one that was a hundred dollars i didn't know there was a free one next door That's Drew Franklin's fault. That is not my fault. Yeah, they just happened to have a free one.
Starting point is 00:47:49 And people are like, who are the idiots that pay in the $100 one? Me, thanks to Drew. Can't have money. All right. Capital Craig. Craig. Craig, what's up? Hey, what's going on?
Starting point is 00:48:01 First of all, I was, you know, fortunate to meet Mark Hope last week at Arlington. And I was just wanted to call and say, like, how crazy it was. It just like so randomly. I mean, if you haven't, for people I haven't been there, an enormous place, like 100 of acres. And he's just there with it. So you were just walking across Arlington National Cemetery and you're just like, look, there's Mark Pope?
Starting point is 00:48:24 Yeah, no, I mean, it was like the wildest thing ever. Nobody around them. I'm by myself. I mean, you know, I've been there for hours. Like, you know, if I was anywhere else, which I had been all over the place, I wouldn't have seen him. Like, it was just nuts. And like, they're the nicest people.
Starting point is 00:48:39 We're so lucky to have them. They are the nice. Like, the whole family. I mean, there's no doubt. Mark Pope is insanely nice. I completely agree with you. And I've not seen him be anything but kind in public to anyone, which is very hard for a person that gets stopped as much as he does.
Starting point is 00:48:58 I can't imagine how often that has to be. Yeah, I mean, I'm sure, you know, he was sort of pretending, but he genuinely seemed interested in talking to me, which was, you know, it's just wild. Anyway, the point I wanted to make, though, was you were talking about Nick Mentioni and Kentucky baseball a little bit earlier in their unconventional style. I think Mark Stoops could take some lessons from Nick in terms of not having a power program in doing things a little bit different.
Starting point is 00:49:29 Well, they used to do that, you know. They used to do that. And Gary, I hate to catch off because we're going to have to go to break, but I appreciate it. They used to do that. And then they kind of got away from that. But to be fair, our fans kind of asked them wrong. to go away from that. They're like, we want to throw the ball more, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:49:45 So, you know, you're kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Real quick, rank the UK basketball coaches in terms of niceness while they were at UK. Ryan. Tubby one, Pope two. Gosh. I'm going the opposite. I'm going to go Pope one. Tubby two.
Starting point is 00:50:06 Joe B. Three. I don't know about Rupp. I don't know anything about his personality. I would say Cal four. Patino 5. I'd say Sutton 5, Rick 6, Billy 7. Do you like that list?
Starting point is 00:50:23 Billy is definitely last. Billy's definitely last. Although he could be really nice sometimes. But I think just overall, probably last. We'll take a break. Come back. Out of number two, KSR. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
