Wow, June the 6th here in Somerset, Kentucky. And look at this crowd here at the Virginia Theater in downtown. Somerset look out. This is only only in the state of Kentucky, only in the state of Kentucky and only with KSR could you get that kind of crowd in June. It's not even close to a sports event.
Starting point is 00:03:19 This is in June in Somerset at the Virginia Theater. Give you guys a big round of applause just for what this crowd is this morning. This is one of the best ones we've ever had in Somerset. And we are here at the Virginia Theater in downtown. This is a theater that opened in 1922, Ryan Limba. 1922. This has existed since then.
Starting point is 00:03:41 There was an ice storm. They redid it just a few years ago. And what a cool facility in a small town in Kentucky, one of the cooler ones I've been to. We talked about it. You know, everybody, every community's got that movie theater and you walk in. You just feel it as soon as you walk in, something really special. And what they've done with this is they have elevated it. Deja Lyle was a manager here.
Starting point is 00:04:01 She's done a fantastic job modernize it. They've got lights, sound system, big concert venue now as well. So it's one of the newest entertainment venues in the state that's also one of the oldest. This used to be a movie theater. They now have plays. They had the concert here, the 606 strong tornado relief benefit just last week, which had, what, Nicholas Jameson? Sunday Best.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Sunday Best was here. And Shannon, I wish Middlesbrough had a place like this. This is really neat. Me too. I mean, this is like something you might find in a big city in Kentucky. You know, it kind of reminds me of the Mercury Ballroom a little bit. That's a good call. That's a good call.
Starting point is 00:04:39 And, you know, I'm looking forward to just playing here later on tonight. We've never played a theater before like this. So you're playing here tonight, right? With Alice Blue Gown. That's right. So this will be like full of all of your fans here. Are you looking forward to it? I'm really excited about it.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Yeah. So you've never played a theater. No, we played amphitheaters, but never anything quite like this. The cool thing about this, you I was saying earlier, you know, you got the renovated part, but then they also left, you know, some of the old part, too, so you get a little bit of the history with this building. I like it. That is a good combination.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Well, Ryan, got up this morning, came down here to Somerset. I was thinking about the towns we've done the most remotes in. If Somerset's outside of Lexington and Louisville, if it's not first, it's in the top three, I would think over the years. I knew Bob and Jamestown would be here, and there he is. my mom would say, hey, be nice to Bob while you're there, so I'll do my best, Bob, before I leave. He hasn't taken a phone call yet. If you take a phone call, you're out.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I'm kicking you out if you take a phone call. Last night, I was at KS Bar. You know, we've started the renovation process. We were down there rolling up our sleeves and doing some work. Yeah, we're not ready to have you yet. We need to have a direction before we let you break everything. But it was very night we got some big changes coming, and we also really, realized we're going to use some of our listeners for part of it.
Starting point is 00:06:01 We're going to ask for volunteers for people to do things. I'm not going to say what it is yet. So we were doing that all last night. I'm excited about it, really. We're going to come back bigger and better than ever, just in time for football season when everybody comes there. I hope cross your fingers, Shannon. Some of the things may take a little more work as they probably know here than we thought,
Starting point is 00:06:17 but we'll make it happen. You mentioned Somerset. We've been to Gatties a lot. All the Don Franklin's down here. But this is the biggest crowd I think we've ever had in Somerset. Yeah, no doubt. out. So we appreciate it. All right, so let's go over some UK news to start the day. Basketball team all here but two people. Mohamed Diabate and Yellovich are the only players not here. They've already
Starting point is 00:06:41 started workouts. They did like little welcome videos for each player where the coaches were standing there with them and they said we're ready to go get number nine. It was interesting watching them. The guys all Shannon seemed very nervous. I think I think this is going to be a group. that they're all little nervous for, I think even they realize how much our fan base can be. If you watch the videos, there's some, like... Kind of like first day of school vibes. Yeah, a little bit. And, you know, because, I mean, if you play basketball at Pitt, like Jaylon Lowe, you're used to...
Starting point is 00:07:15 Nobody knows who you are, right? Even Jay and Quaintance at Arizona State. I mean, they don't, you know, their games, nobody really cares. This is going to be a different kind of thing, but I do like the way the basketball team, If you go online, you get introduced to all of the guys over the last few days. It is kind of cool. I'm really glad they're doing that. We kind of get to know them a little bit more as a person and get to recognize them a little bit when they're around town.
Starting point is 00:07:36 But we only heard the guys last year. Amari and Lamont Butler talked about they had no idea until they went to that first exhibition game. And for an exhibition game, they had more people there than their normal games they got during the regular season last year. Mario was complaining on the way down here this morning. He wrote with me. He was complaining about Jaden Quaintens his hair. He's going to do all he can to try to get his hair cut. He's got his hair like almost over his eyes when he tries to play.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Maybe Owey, you know, can take him to his barber. Oway is completely gone. But as I was looking at them coming, I wanted to compare it to Mark's story of the Harold Leader, who I think's done a great job recently. He did the all-UK mid-quarter century team. So the best team at Kentucky for the last 25 years. And he gave his starting lineup. So I want you all right now.
Starting point is 00:08:28 I'll start with you, Mr. History here. If you were to do from 2000 to 2025, your UK all-time starting lineup, let's see if you get the same thing. I pretty much agree with what Mark has, although I might quibble with one thing. Who would be in your starting lineup? And he does it by position. So who would be your starting point guard? I think you'd have to go just for what he meant to the program, John Wall.
Starting point is 00:08:55 I think that's pretty clear. John Wall, you could make a case for maybe Tyler Eulis, maybe Brandon Knight, but I think it has to be John Wall. So that's an easy one. I think the center's probably pretty easy who you put in its center. Probably DeMarcus. Anthony Davis. I mean. Oh, Anthony Davis.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Did you just hear him? Yeah. He hosts a University of Kentucky show. You just put DeMarcus over Anthony Davis? I hadn't even thought Anthony Davis yet. Shannon, I'm going to you now. No, no, no. Well, right. He's better overall than I am.
Starting point is 00:09:26 How could you not? Anthony Davis is the first one. I'm going to put him at the four spot. Well, you're wrong. So he's at the center. All right. Now, he has the two, the three, and the four. And I think this, some people would think these are controversial picks.
Starting point is 00:09:41 I bet what do you think? I'm not going to tell you what he has first. Who is your two, three, and four? Keith Bogans at the two, Tashon Prince at the three. And the four, I would probably try to throw Julius Randall in there. Julius Randall, okay? What about you? What would your two, three, and four?
Starting point is 00:09:56 I like actually what he says there. Julius Randall at the four. Tashon Prince has got to be in there. Keith Bogan is the leading scoring guard in UK history. He is. You're going to put Keith in there? I'm a Jody Meeks. That's a good one.
Starting point is 00:10:13 That's a good one. Here's what Mark has. He has the two guard, Keith Bogan's. I think a lot of people might be surprised to have Keith Bogan's at the two. I'm with you. Highest scoring guard in. UK history. People in this room, a lot of you know, the 2003 team, in my opinion, the most underrated team in UK history. When that team was rolling, nobody better. And the only reason
Starting point is 00:10:35 they lost is because Keith Bogans, if Keith Bogans doesn't get hurt, they win it. Tashon Prince is at the small forward for him. Yeah. And then they put the four. I think he's cheating a little bit with this one, Shannon, because I don't think this guy's a true four, but he puts Oscar Sheboy at Power Forward. You think that's cheating a little bit? That is cheating, yeah. I don't think you can play Oscar and Anthony Davis together.
Starting point is 00:10:58 I really know. I mean, the greatest rebounder of our time, but I don't think he belongs on the list. What do you think? If nothing else, I would flip him. Maybe play Oscar at the five and Anthony Davis at the four if you're going to play those two guys. Now, the controversial picks.
Starting point is 00:11:11 He picks as the best sixth man, Darius Miller. Now, if you're just talking about sixth men as sixth man. Like, did they play as the sixth man on their team? I could be convinced to put Darius Miller there. But if you didn't do that, Ryan, I don't think you would have Dariusman. But he has Darius Miller as the sixth man. I think that's a UK Homer pick, like a state of Kentucky Homer pick. Would you do it? But if you're picking truly who, if he was a sixth man at Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:11:40 he may be the best sixth man of the past 25 years. National championship team, I think, has a lot to do with that too, probably. And many beam for me. Yeah. All right. Now, Here is his second team. All right. Who would your second team point guard be? Tyler U.S. is his second team point guard. You already mentioned your second team shooting guard.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Jody Meeks. Yep. He's on there. All right. Small forward, power forward, and center. This is, I think you'd get a lot of different answers on this. What is your small forward, power forward center second team? I guess I'm picking Carl as my center.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Over DeMarcus, who you had first team? Yeah. DeMarcus. You've already bumped, he's already bumped DeMarcus from first team to not on the team. Yeah. Okay. Boy, the four is what's so hard,
Starting point is 00:12:26 because I've already said Julius Randall. Patrick Patterson, I may go with Patrick Patterson. Okay. You would take Julius Randall, though, right? I had him on my first team. Oh. So then you're not going to put Oscar Sheewe? No.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Okay. You don't even have a lot. Oscar Shebawe was national player of the year. You're not going to put the national player of the year on the team. Okay, I got us. I got to put it. put him on the team. All right. What about you? As the four? Four. Terrence Jones. He has Chuck Hayes. You're going to skate. You love Chuck Hayes. I'm
Starting point is 00:12:57 surprised you don't have him there. He was awesome, but if I'm going to pick somebody better, that got to go with somebody better. What does that mean? I mean, I love Chuck Hayes more than I love these other guys. I got to pick a better player. Oh, okay. That's all right. Following his logic. Yeah. If I'm going to do. to pick somebody better. I got to put somebody better. All right. He has his center, Willie Colley Stein. Would you take Willie Colley Stein over DeMarcus cousins and Carl Towns? No, no, I probably wouldn't. Willie Colleystim. First team All-American, those guys were not. Yeah, and maybe some of that's
Starting point is 00:13:32 because of how great Carl is in the NBA, you know, a little bit of that recency bias, just watching them play for the Knicks. But I think I would still take Carl Anthony Towns over Willie. Willie's accolades, though, are better than anybody in the Calera, just about. That's one of the things about, like, when you're trying to figure out Willie and Oscar, you want to put DeMarcus and Carl Towns ahead of them, but Willie and Oscar have much better credentials. Yes. So there you go.
Starting point is 00:13:58 And then he has his final small forward, Michael Kid Gilchrist. Would you put Michael Kid Gilchrist second team as your small forward? That's not a bad pick. I mean, he did win a national championship. It was number two pick in the draft. I think you'd have to go over it. I like that. I like that.
Starting point is 00:14:10 And then he has his second team, all sixth man. And I know no one in this room is going to disagree with. this, Reed Shepard, which makes me think, see, he claps right there. You got a Reed Shepard jersey on. Would you put, so he's got Darius Miller and Reed Shepard as his two six men, I think probably an ode to having kids from Kentucky. And it just makes me mad.
Starting point is 00:14:31 You mentioned Reed Shepard being a sixth man. Should have started the whole season. We've had a much better year if he'd just start the man. But the man. Well, all right. The Houston Rockets, by the way, announced for people, because, you know, Reed didn't play a whole lot this year, that he would be playing a lot.
Starting point is 00:14:46 lot more minutes next year, so that's good for him. Well, and when he got his chance, he really played really, really well, but you get in the playoffs, he's tough to get any minutes on the floor with that group they had. And speaking of playoffs, if you watch the next Pacers game, our guy Shannon, Cason Wallace, a dude who, you know, I think he often gets forgotten as a guy who played here. I'm still mad that Cal wouldn't make him the point guard that year and had severe wheelers a board guard. It should have been Case and Wallace.
Starting point is 00:15:14 We would have been a lot better if Kaysen Wallace was a point guard. He starts in an NBA finals game. That, to me, is unbelievable. One thing about Caliperia, though, he brought in so much talent. And some of these guys just kind of got lost in the shuffle, got lost in the mix, and you kind of forget about him. Kaysen Wallace is one of those guys, but now it's just thriving in the NBA. If I had told you that Kaysen Wallace in year, what is it, three in the NBA,
Starting point is 00:15:40 is year two or three, that he would start in the NBA, finals. Remember, there were times Cal didn't start him here. There were times he did not start here, and he is starting in the NBA finals. I remember when the, went to the thunder, I remember thinking myself, he's never going to play. He's playing behind Shea. He's never going on the floor. Then he became like the first guard off the bench, and it seemed to start last night. Just credit to him, how hard he's worked to get to that level. The starting back court for the team, I know they lost last night, and we'll talk about it. I still think they're going to end up winning the title. The starting, oh wait a minute, you got a pay.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Pacers jersey on. You may disagree with me on that. Pacers hat here. You get Pacers everywhere. Let's assume, though, they come back and win. The starting back court, Shannon. Just think about this from it. The starting back court for the NBA champion is going to be two guys who at times at UK didn't start. You want to get
Starting point is 00:16:34 frustrated with Cal's substitution pattern? The starting back court, one of whom is the MVP when they first came to Kentucky, didn't even start. You told me that... That is extremely frustrating. Case of Wallace and Shay
Starting point is 00:16:50 would end up winning an NBA title before they would win a college title. Before they would win a college SEC tournament game in one of their games. That's true. I told you you're crazy, but yet here we are. Very, very frustrating.
Starting point is 00:17:02 859-2802287. We'd like to hear from you. Give us a shout. We are here in Somerset, Kentucky. A great crowd at the Virginia Theater where Shannon's going to be playing later tonight. We'll take a break and be right back. Let's see this Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Starting point is 00:18:01 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slices Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations
Starting point is 00:18:13 about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42.
Starting point is 00:18:31 Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Will Ferrell's Big Money Players and IHeart Podcast presents soccer moms. So I'm Leanne. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:52 This is my best friend Janet. Hey. And we have been joined at the hips since high school. Absolutely. Now a redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips. Wider. This is a podcast.
Starting point is 00:19:04 We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey. With all the snacks and drink. Sidebar. Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? Well, then you got it. Do you want a white collar or something here? What are y'all doing? Microphones?
Starting point is 00:19:19 Are you making a rap album? Oh, I would. Come on. I would buy it. Cuts through the defense like a hot knife through sponge cake. That sounds delicious. Oh, you're lucky I'm not a drug addict. You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic.
Starting point is 00:19:35 You are. I'm not a killer. I love this team and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on. Oh. Listen to soccer moms on the eye-hombs on. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time. You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a perimenopausal chin here you do. So let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Join me on my new podcast. How hard can it be with Deanna Maria Riva, where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate midlife's most fantastic BS. All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own. I was like, what the hell is that? I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that Ness was going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex? Dating at 45. How can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy? That one's kind of hard.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears or tears of laughter, and dive into it, unfiltered and unbothered and ask, how hard can it be? I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public. Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Diana Maria Riva as part of My Cultura Podcast Network available on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live in Somerset at the Virginia.
Starting point is 00:21:09 A big crowd here this morning. They got beer selling in the back there at the Virginia Theater. Are you all selling that? Got the mayor is in town. I do think it always like to do when we come to a town. You're usually pretty good at this. Best athletes from Somerset. What do we got here, Ryan?
Starting point is 00:21:27 You know I ask you this every time I come up. We come to a place. We've got to start with Reggie Hansen, right? Reggie Hanson. Yeah, won a state title when he played for Ploskey County, played for Kentucky. He had a little couple minutes in the NBA. I think the best baseball player has got to be Josh Anderson.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Started with EKU legend, ended up in the big leagues. I like how he says big leagues. He's like, that's what people who play baseball say. They don't say the majors. They say they're into big leagues. It had some really good football players, but the best one may have been a guy we called the Coltrane. Who's we? Channel 18.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Okay. We need to give him the nickname to Coltrane. Does anybody else call him that or just you all? Maybe just us. Okay. What was his name? He had like 2,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in one season, like 40-something touchdown. Will you tell us his actual name?
Starting point is 00:22:11 Cole. Oh. Yeah, he didn't even know the name. What is his last name? drawn you don't know this person I drew a blank cold what
Starting point is 00:22:21 drawn drawn drawn cold drawn cold drawn cold drawn and you just called him the coal train that's what we called him the coal train well did anybody in Somerset call him that or is that just what you all caught see thank you ma'am she's just shaking her head saying no you don't seem very happy are you you're wearing a KSR you're wearing my face on your shirt okay all right that's better you just were scowling a little bit
Starting point is 00:22:44 And I was like, are you happy to be here? Okay. And it's a stink guy. Yeah, you're giving us a little bit of the stink eye. One person writes, Matt, I had a bet with my friend whether or not you would lead the show with Trump and Elon today. You didn't. I win the bet. I mean, I'm not saying I told you so.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Yeah. I told you so. Yep. I think we all knew how this was going to end. Two big personalities like that. I said it was like if Louisville fans, when California, you know, I said it was like if Louisville fans, It's when Calipari and Stoops were fighting with each other. And that's how they had to have loved it, that they were fighting with each other.
Starting point is 00:23:20 That's how I was yesterday. I promise, I know a lot of people in here don't agree with me on this. So I'll just let it go in a second. But I do have to take one day of going. I did enjoy them going after each other yesterday. When two people you don't like fight, that makes me happy. Shannon and I had our own little side bet. We thought you'd lead with that also because you could tell by your tweets,
Starting point is 00:23:37 you were kind of enjoying the back and board. I did enjoy it. I was like all afternoon. I was like, okay, what's the next thing they're going to say about each other? I did. It was inevitable, but I enjoyed watching it. I'm so proud of you. We got 20 minutes into the show before you mentioned it. I did the UK stuff first. I was ready. Yeah, when you got somebody, two guys like that with all that power and all that money,
Starting point is 00:23:55 you realize it's not going to. It's not going to coexist. I want, if you get a chance this weekend, if you care about college sports, and I think everybody here that is here does care about college sports, you ought to take a chance a second to listen. I did a podcast yesterday, which is on the Matt Jones Show, with Ross Dellinger. And I think I've said to you all, if you want to, this is the most important summer in college sports history, not just history, but going forward. What happens this summer
Starting point is 00:24:26 is going to decide what college sports looks like probably for the next 15 or 20 years. There's the House settlement that's going to be decided by July 1st. That's about how players do rev share. There's the question of whether or not they're going to pass a bill in Congress, which a lot of this stuff that's happening right now with Trump and all that that will affect that. And then there is the once this $20 million starts getting shared, how's it going to work? So I had Ross Dillinger on my podcast. Ross is the person who knows the most about this. His wife actually works in politics, which is part of how he gets his connection on all this.
Starting point is 00:25:03 He's on there. We talk for like 45 minutes. You can listen to it. You ought to listen this weekend. But he said a lot of things that are interesting. and people should listen to all of it, but let me give you a couple of the short ones. First of all, he said, schools can spend $21 million, but Ross said there are schools who can't afford to spend that. And there are going to be schools who are not able to spend the $21 million.
Starting point is 00:25:28 And I'm talking about big schools, schools in the ACC, schools in the Big 12, just not going to be able to spend it. So that's going to hurt him. He then said that what we've talked about on this show, how schools are going to, the programs in the school are going to be fighting each other for who gets what chunk of money, he said is already happening. And he gave like a little piece of news that I thought was interesting. The SEC wanted to make it where out of the $21 million, it was set in stone how much each program got. So Shannon, they wanted to say, football gets 14 million. Basketball gets three million. women's basketball gets like 1.5, et cetera, and then baseball gets half, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:26:12 They said the loudest voice of dissension in the room was Kentucky basketball. That Kentucky basketball did not want to have a cap of the $3 million. And because Kentucky basketball complained so much, they did not set caps on the teams, essentially saying to each college, you can distribute. the money how you want. I find that interesting, Shannon, because if Kentucky basketball was the one complaining,
Starting point is 00:26:43 that means Kentucky basketball is going to get more than $3 million, which also means Kentucky football is going to get less than the other schools in the SEC. I don't think I'd heard anybody say that until Ross said it to me on my podcast yesterday. You need to listen. He does a longer
Starting point is 00:27:01 clip on it, but that's really interesting to me, Because if you're the football staff and you know not only do you have to play in the SEC, but you're going to have less money than the other schools in the SEC, you've got to wonder how they're going to handle it. Yeah. I mean, if you're Mark Stoops, you're fighting for every dollar that you can get. But, you know, a lot of these schools are going to have to decide what's more important to us.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Is it basketball or is it football? If you're a basketball school, you're going to obviously want more NIL money for basketball. If you're football, you're going to go to, you know, more NIL for football. So it's going to be interesting to see how these schools divide. lot. Ross said he thinks schools in the SEC have basically said we're going to do football, basketball, and then we're going to pick one more sport to be good at. And every school is going to figure out what that sport is. And he thinks some of them are going to be baseball, like LSU and Mississippi State. He thinks some of them are going to be women's basketball like South
Starting point is 00:27:56 Carolina. And then he said for schools like Kentucky, they probably have to choose. Do we want to be really good at women's basketball? Or do we want to be really good at women's basketball? Or do we want to to be really good at baseball. And the question is, Ryan, which one are we going to choose? You're right. A lot of schools, baseball is very important. More important a lot of times than their basketball team is. So I can see them giving more money to baseball. And also softball. Yeah. There are schools that will, that will Oklahoma will probably pick softball as the one they do. So I, but to hear this is a national reporter said the SEC's entire structure of how they're going to play players was changed because Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:28:35 basketball basically said we don't want to have a cap on how much we get i think that's awesome for kentucky basketball but it does make me wonder if the kentucky football people are going to be like you just come on give us something here that'll be really interesting to see 859 280 2287 couple of lines give us a shout we're here in somerset this is kentucky sports radio Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-2802287. We'll go to the phone here in just a second. Text machine 7-722-254. I know on paper this isn't interesting, but the Dallas stars, the hockey team just fired their coach. That means, Shannon, in the NBA, the Knicks fired Tom Tibado. In hockey, they fired the Dallas Stars fire their coach. Two people who went to the final four in their sports, both fired the year they went to the final four. Would you fire a coach who just took you to the final four in your sport, both basketball and hockey? Somebody's done that this year? No, especially not the Knicks.
Starting point is 00:29:38 I mean, a team that hasn't been really that great since when the 90s, it's the last time that they were, you know, that far into the playoffs. So, no, there's no way I would have fired. Can you imagine a college basketball coach getting fired after making the final four? No. Apparently it was the front office that didn't like the lineup that he was putting out there. He was experimenting with the lineups and the playoffs. they didn't like that so they fire him. But I'm like, he got you this far.
Starting point is 00:30:00 He got you this far. I don't know what else you can want. Are you had a question for me about the revenue thing, and I think it's something other people will ask too, Ryan. What is it? You know, at its core, I am a reporter. So what I would like to know from you, I don't think that's true, but okay.
Starting point is 00:30:14 If Kentucky opts to give more money to UK basketball, does that money have to come from the UK football allotment? Yes. So, I mean, let's lose this table of four people right here. There's four of you. Let's say you represent. the four sports, the four major sports, football, basketball, women's basketball, baseball, baseball, baseball. Let's say that you make those four. I've got $21 million to split amongst you all,
Starting point is 00:30:40 and I can decide what I want to do. The SEC wanted to make sure that, okay, you're football, you're getting 14, you're basketball, you're getting three, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Kentucky basketball said don't do that, which means if Kentucky basketball gets five, that other two's got to come from somebody. It's got to come from somebody. And women's basketball and baseball can only be cut so much, which means it's got to come from football. So if you decide to give basketball more, you are inherently cutting from football. And here's the other thing you have to worry about. I talked about this the other day.
Starting point is 00:31:14 Every power school can spend $21 million. Now, Shannon, they don't have to spend it, but they can't. All right, so I just said what Kentucky has. Now, you're sitting by yourself here. You know who you are? you're St. Johns because you don't have a football program and you don't have a women's basketball
Starting point is 00:31:33 program that's good. So St. John's can say, I can spend $21 million, I'm going to spend it all on basketball. Because they don't have to share it. Good for Rick. So St. John's, think about the teams that have a football team. St.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Johns, Villanova, Connecticut, Gonzaga, those schools, now they may not be able to raise of $21 million, but if they can, Shannon, they could in theory spend it all on basketball. And I think Kentucky's premise is we don't want to only have $3 million and be recruiting against Rick up in New York who's got $20 million. We have to be able to be flexible.
Starting point is 00:32:16 Now, Ross said, hey, Kentucky can make some of that up with collectives, but not the whole thing. So that's why they want to have that flexibility. So if you're Kentucky then, how would you divide this up? I've got a number in my mind. I want to see what you think. Mitch Barnhart, Mitch Barnhart is,
Starting point is 00:32:32 and this is why this summer is so important. Mitch Barnhart is going to make a decision. Literally, he's probably making it right now about how they're going to divide that up. And in my opinion, it will tell the country what Kentucky's priorities are going to be. Do they, like you're going to be making a statement
Starting point is 00:32:56 as to whether or not what matters to you. And I don't know how you do it, Ryan. Let's say you are Mitch Barnhart. How would you divide it up? Yeah, you've got $20 million. Let's just assume, sorry to interrupt, but let's just assume women's basketball, baseball, softball, they're going to take $3 million.
Starting point is 00:33:12 So I've given you $17 million. The rest of the SEC is going to do 14 football, three basketball. What are you going to do? That's tough because you've got to compete against those other schools that are given $14 million. you're going to go to Mark Stubbs and tell him, hey, I'm going to give you $2 million less than all the other schools are getting the SEC. So what are you going to do? But we're a basketball. We're Kentucky basketball is what it's important to most of us.
Starting point is 00:33:34 I think we got to invest in basketball. So what are you going to do? I go five to basketball. 12 to football. Five to basketball, 12 to football. What are you going to do? I had a completely different number in mind. I was going to go, well, you're saying you're taking away the $3 million.
Starting point is 00:33:49 I would probably go like $9 million to basketball. Oh, really? Oh, yeah. I mean, we're a basketball school. So you're going to do nine basketball eight football? Yes. You're going to give our football team half the budget of the rest of the SEC. Yes.
Starting point is 00:34:06 Are we a basketball school or a football school? It goes back to the Calipari thing from a couple of years ago. Well, okay. So to play your case, you don't think Duke's going to do something like that? Sure. I mean, Duke's just going to sacrifice their – I'm just going to guess. Duke's just going to sacrifice their football program. They're going to say, it was nice having you, Duke.
Starting point is 00:34:26 but we're a basketball program. Kansas is probably just going to sacrifice their football program. They're probably going to say, you know what, we're Kansas, whatever. North Carolina is going to try to do both. They hired Bill Belichick. They didn't hire Bill Belichick to give him half the money. So the question is, Ryan, is Kentucky more like Kansas and Duke? Or are we more like North Carolina, Michigan, et cetera,
Starting point is 00:34:54 trying to be good at both? What are we going to do? Because I think Kentucky's in the weirdest position of all. If I'm the athletic director at Kansas and Duke, I'm saying football, it was nice knowing you see you later. And if I'm North Carolina and I've just hired Bill Belichick, I can't just scrap football. But Kentucky's kind of in the middle. And I don't really know what they do, Ryan. Yeah, because just a couple years ago, we were knocking on the door with Michigan State, North Carolina.
Starting point is 00:35:19 Now the last couple years, maybe not so. But we built and we got ourselves up to that point, I don't think you want to take a huge step back. Unlike Kansas and Duke that are playing in football conferences that are kind of a little bit of a second tier, we're playing in the SEC. Like, we're not playing against Georgia Tech in football. We're playing against Georgia. That's the thing. In this era, if Kentucky is ever going to be able to compete for an SEC title in football,
Starting point is 00:35:50 they're going to need almost all that 20 million by themselves, but then you can't not give anything to basketball in the other. other schools. I think this is the most important choice that UK athletics is going to make in the next decade is being made right now. And I don't know what they're going to do. And I don't even know what's crazy is we might not even know what they do because they won't have to announce how the revenue was shared until like a year from now. So we won't even know what they decided to do for a while. I mean, the next time I interviewed Mitch Barthart, I'm going to ask him this. What are you doing?
Starting point is 00:36:25 Like, what are you going to do? Mitch did an interview where he says he's going to be flexible year to year. But I don't know. How do you walk over to Mark Stoop's office and tell him? I'm going to give you less than all the other schools in the SEC. You've got to be a man. But then how do you look at Mark Pope? How do you look at Mark Pope and say, Mark, I expect you to go hang banner number nine,
Starting point is 00:36:47 but you got half as much money as Yukon, Villanova, and St. John? Yep, yeah. I don't know. Who's up next? Got Sean up next. Sean, go ahead, Sean. Hey, guys, quick to partner, if I can. Attendance-wise, what do you expect for the opener in Central Michigan football, obviously?
Starting point is 00:37:07 And if they win that, you know, as down as there's, you know, as we've been, there's no enthusiasm. But if they win that opener, the following week, Ole Miss at 3.30, I mean, it's fireball and Cornell, right? Darn near sold out. I mean, you know, maybe three's one back one week the fan base is back. Well, first of all, I think you will have good crowds for week one and two. I mean, opening game, people just come. So I don't know if it'll be full, but I think it'll be pretty close. If we win week one, Ole Miss will be full. What I'm more interested in is if you lose to Ole Miss by a lot, what is week three like?
Starting point is 00:37:44 Like, that's where I think you'll really see the tail. I think they're going to get a really good crowd for the opener. We always do Ole Miss at 3.30. Now, if we lose to Toledo, that Old Miss game may not be great. But if we beat Toledo, I think people will be into it. But then I think you really see, Ryan, what it's going to be week three when they play against two ever, against Eastern Michigan. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:05 Yeah, Toledo game, you win that one. Ole Miss will be packed. SEC opener will be a beautiful day, I'm sure, Saturday afternoon and September. But do you lose that one? If you lose both of those, there may be a half the proud of Michigan. And then I think there's a bigger question, Shannon, which is, you know, you got that Eastern Michigan game. And then you have road games. I don't know who are the next two, but we might get blown out in both of those next two road games.
Starting point is 00:38:28 When we come back the week after that. That's really going to tell the story. You know, because we play, do we play, I think there's a weekend, which is Texas football, but it's also our opening exhibition basketball game. We play Purdue, right? And Keenland is that weekend. Yeah. Do people go to that game?
Starting point is 00:38:50 because they're already going to have that Purdue exhibition game. That's where I think you have to see what happens. Yeah, I think there'll be a lot of Texas fans at Krogerfield for the Kentucky, Texas football game. I mean, I worry about the attendance. But, I mean, it's on them. Like, you know, it's going to be on the team, the staff. What happens? We've heard, you know, this offseason, I think an alarming number of season ticket holders who have canceled,
Starting point is 00:39:17 who have been season ticket holders for years, you know. and they just canceled this year. One person writes, Matt, what do you think the fan base would say about the money? Well, I don't know, but let's do a little poll here. All right. All right. I'm going to give you three options. I'm going to give you three options.
Starting point is 00:39:33 You tell me what you vote for. Option one will be we do what the rest of the SEC does, which is 14 million football, three basketball. Option two would be a little more pro basketball, 12 to football, and option three would be Shannon's. We go all in on basketball, and spend like $8 or $9 million on football. How many of you would say do what the rest of the SEC does
Starting point is 00:39:55 and make it 14 and 3? Raise your hand. Whoa. One person. Whoa. Wow. One person. How many of you would say the sort of $5 million basketball, 12 football?
Starting point is 00:40:08 Raise your hand. How many of you take Shannon's forget football, make a basketball? Wow. Wow. Is that surprised you? Yeah, a little bit. So for people listening at home, it was probably 60% Shannon's 35% mine and then one guy saying make it equal. Wow.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Now that is a little telling to me. I would not have thought 60% of the people would just say throw football out. Well, I wonder if we had the same. That's amazing. We're not completely throwing them out. But saying, well, we'll give you half the money. But you have to prioritize what means more to you. And I think basketball will always mean more.
Starting point is 00:40:48 Does that mean Cal was right? We're a basketball school? Does that mean? I mean... We had the same scenario like four or five years ago. That's a good question. You think people would have said that cows last year? No.
Starting point is 00:41:02 That's an interesting question. Let's say it was the year we came off eight and four in football and Cal had just lost to St. Peters. I think we would say we need it more NIL for basketball. We wouldn't have lost the St. Peters. You think it would have been a similar result? I think it would have been. See, I think the result's a little different because these people,
Starting point is 00:41:18 because everybody likes Mark Pope so much. Yeah. And everybody wants Mark Pope to win. That is, that surprised me. I did not think that was going to be the answer. Noche Linda Farms. We've started receiving beef from Noce, Linda Farms. The newest harvest would make a great Father's Day gift.

Starting point is 00:41:57 We'll take a break. I still can't believe that poll. Me too. What about you all at home? Does anybody disagree with them or just what was the one guy who said equal? You and my mullet guy back there. Is there anybody that agrees with him? We'll take a break and be right back.

All that new country that you love, you're going to get an earful of it. Yeah, if you're out in Nashville and you see Meyer and I on the streets, welcome him because he's very, very nervous about being in Nashville. I don't know what he thinks is going to happen, but he's very nervous.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Take him somewhere nice. and get him a cowboy hat. I'm getting a cowboy hat. Don't you worry. One person writes, Matt, I listened to your interview with Ross Delinger. I thought it was fascinating. Some of the things he talked about, do you agree with him that they will actually use the clearing house?
Starting point is 00:47:04 All right, so people don't know what he's talking about. This is one of the things he said, which I thought was fascinating. So, you know, now basically the collectives can just hand the money players. They really don't have to do anything. True. As part of this settlement, there is going to be a clearinghouse. house run by Deloitte, not run by the NCAA, okay, run by, you know how the Oscars will say the votes have been added up by this accounting company, basically? They have hired a company
Starting point is 00:47:33 outside of the NCAA that's going to look at all NIL deals and make sure that they're paying fair market value and that the players are doing work for the money. Basically, making it to where NIL is NIL. Now, why does that matter? Because if they do that, somebody like Joe Kraft for us or somebody like whoever cannot make up the difference from that 20 million. Does that make sense? Because there have been people who said, hey Kentucky, and that was a TV show I was on once, but Kentucky can spend $3 million on basketball and then they can go get a donor to give $15 million in collective money. In theory, Ryan, you won't. be able to do that anymore. You'll have to prove that when you give Trent Noah an amount of money
Starting point is 00:48:25 that he has, quote, unquote, worked for it by doing the endorsements, et cetera, and I think at that point, a lot of that stuff will go away. I think a lot of it will go away. There'll be something will still do it. Like Trent Noah might be a guy that does some local spots to earn some of that extra money. But you're right. A lot of it's just going to. But you're not going to be able to give Otega away $3 million and say, hey, he has $3 million, and then he does $3 million, and then he does one commercial. You're going to have to show that that $3 million, he does an amount worth the $3 million, which is going to be hard to do. But see, that's what I thought NIL was supposed to be all along, and it turned into we're just going to give, you know, players money. You don't have to do
Starting point is 00:49:02 anything. So I think it's actually a good thing that they're making them work for the money. So that's why I think it's so important the decision Mitch makes, because you're not just going to be able to make up the money with a donor writing a check like you used to be able to do. Who's up next? Emmett is up next. Emmett. Go ahead, Emmett. Yeah, I was going to say, I really do think it matters what sport. I think you have the best chance to compete for a championship in. Because, like, Kentucky, if you give them $14 million or whatever it is,
Starting point is 00:49:32 and they're still finishing fourth or fifth, it kind of, I don't know if it meets the needs of what we write. Versus in basketball, that money, we have a chance to compete for a championship every year. And I think that really matters. and determining how much money each program is going to get. Well, that would be the argument for Shannon's thing. I appreciate the call. Why spend 14, Shannon, if we're going to get the same results if we had spent eight?
Starting point is 00:49:57 That's it. So we might as well spend eight and put the six towards basketball is what you would say. Yeah, we know the basketball team is going to compete for a title. So why not give them the money that they need to be able to do that? He also said Ross said he thought college that he said he didn't think coach's salaries wouldn't necessarily go down, but he said the days of you signing a guy to a 10-year deal and guaranteeing the money, like we did with Cal or like Jimbo Fisher at A&M, he said that's done. He was like, now coaches are going to be on three-year deals, four-year deals.
Starting point is 00:50:30 He thinks there'll be a lot more coaches fired. He's like, the days of you having to pay $80 million buyouts, he was like, those days are done. I have another reporter question. Okay. The more I think about this, the more I realize the athletic budget, Lardy DePee, on the revenue gain by SEC football. Great point. So how can you cut that?
Starting point is 00:50:51 I mean, all right, let's use the 60% of the voters here in Shannon. You do that position and then nobody goes to the football games. Shannon, you might not have the revenue to pay the $20 million to begin with. They'll still go to the games. Do you think we go to the games to be uncompetitive again? No, but I don't think that's the mindset, but I think that fans will still go to the games. It's still football, you know? I think Kentucky has one of the hardest choices of any college.
Starting point is 00:51:22 Because like I said, it's pretty clear what Duke ought to do. And it's pretty clear what Kansas should do. I think Kentucky and North Carolina have to sit there and go, what do we do? Yeah. And, you know, they've already spent that money on Belichick, so they ain't going to punt, I wouldn't think. Yeah. So it's going to be tough. Mitch, Mitch is going to make, this is the most.
Starting point is 00:51:44 important decision for UK athletics in the next decade, and Mitch is making it. And this is probably the last big decision he makes before he retires, to be honest with you. We'll take a break and be right back. Come back. Hour number two here at the Virginia. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
