Those people are starving for banter.

This is David Eagleman with the Inner Cosmos podcast. And for Mental Health Awareness Month, we'll talk with singer-songwriter Jewel about anxiety. I started living in my car and then my car got stolen. I was having panic attacks. I was agoraphobic. This is a month of deeply personal and honest conversations about what happens when the brain goes off course.

Your 20s can be so exciting, but they can also be really overwhelming, confusing, and honestly, just kind of lonely. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the psychology of your 20s is breaking down the science behind the biggest roadblocks we face. I was six years into my career, the 80-hour weeks, and just the first one in, the last one out, and I ended up burning out. There was a large chunk of my 20s that I like was just so wanting to like be out of that phase out of my skin. And I just like really regret not living in the present more. You don't need to have everything figured out right now. You just need to understand yourself a little bit better.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Listen to the psychology of your 20s on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Okay, I do recognize for those of you saying that I've like, went full doofing schmerts there in the second half of the first hour. You're right. My voice kind of did the,
Starting point is 00:03:35 you know, I get it. But I'm a little outraged by a couple things. I'm justified. All right. But we got Billy here. He's outraged at something Shannon's said. We got callers. I'm still going to do the end of my analogy I use.
Starting point is 00:03:49 But before all that, I have some breaking news. One. This is why I love live radio. This is why I think it's the best. medium. Because you never know what's going to happen. We had a caller in the last segment, say he went by Dunkin' Donuts and threw the L's down in Frankfurt to Vince Merrill. Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:10 And we didn't know whether we believed him or not. Did you believe him, Shannon? No. No. Did you believe him right? I did kind of believe him. I kind of believed him. During the break, for the first time since yesterday, my phone rang, and it was Vince Merrill. and Vince Merrill called to tell me that the guy flipped him off at the dunking donuts.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Not L's down. That he didn't throw L's down. He threw something up instead. He flipped him off. And I said to him, I'm about to go back on the air. I'm not asking you about any of the rest of this right now. You did. You said that.
Starting point is 00:04:51 But I did think that. And I said, do you care if I share that? And he said, yes. So not only is Vince listening, Shaded and he wants to crack. not L's down, middle finger up. Yeah. Wow. There's a big difference in that.
Starting point is 00:05:04 You can do L's down. That's fine. But I want you to think about this. This is why, Vince, because I know you're listening. This is why you screwed up. Right. You had a relationship with this fan base where literally you would call into the show, like call it during a break and say, yeah, that guy's story, he actually flipped me off.
Starting point is 00:05:24 It's not going to be like that at Louisville. No. There's nothing they have. that's like this. There's nothing. And, you know, I don't know what to tell you. But, wow. So there you go. That's why live radio is right there.
Starting point is 00:05:41 My guess is that's not going to be the only time that Vince runs into a situation like that. All right. So that's number one. Number two. Shannon, you said that Billy said he was going to cheer for Louisville if Kentucky didn't play. Billy, you would like to chime in. Yeah, I didn't catch the whole first hour. I did catch Shannon warping my words again.
Starting point is 00:05:58 What did you say then, sir? I wish Vince Merrow the best of luck. I did not say I was going to be rooting for the Cardinals. You wish him the best of luck. You can't wish somebody the best of luck professionally. To be fair, Shannon, the best of luck you could have would be to win, right? That's right. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:06:11 That's what I'm saying. Acting like I'm putting a Cardinal hat on and rooting for the car. I thought you were going to. L1C4, Shannon. Give me a break. You all's up as you said that. I mean, no, listen. This guy gave 12 years.
Starting point is 00:06:23 12 years, Shannon. 12 years at Kentucky. Well, so do you hope he wins or loses? I hope he has success, yes. So Shannon was right. I do not. I wish him the best of luck. You came in here to correct, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Professionally and personally, I do wish him the best of luck. So Shannon was right. You came in here to correct him and he was right. I'm not rooting for the cards. I think that's exactly what. I do hope he finds success in his professional career. When Louisville plays teams that are not Kentucky are and Vince Morrow is on the sideline. Are you rooting for him to win? No, I wish him the best of love.
Starting point is 00:07:01 What does that mean? No matter what stop along his career, I hope he finds success, yes. So at Louisville, to find success, he's going to have to win. Do you want him to win? No, I don't want him to win. I want him to find success if he's not winning. It may be personally. Who knows, the relationship he has. You said personally and professionally. Yes, I hope he finds success. No, I do not root for the Cardinals to win specific games. I don't understand. What success can he have?
Starting point is 00:07:28 of if they don't win. Like, you mean just success and like... Well, he could be a good recruiter. He could bring in some guys that make a difference. And then they all lose. Then they all lose. But no, listen. Wow. I got a number to a tattoo shop. Just go get that big L tattoo in your back when you leave here. You should have just let me say what you. You know what? This is the equivalent of Vince's interview in December for you. You made it worse. Yeah, you've been better off not coming on. You've been better off not coming in. Turn his mic off. 859, 280, 20, 20. to like Vince.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Wow. Wow. That was a heck of a start to a segment. What I said was I... It looks like Shannon, I was about to give you a hard time. It looks like you were right. It looks like you were correct. Personally, I love Vince, but professionally I can't root for him now.
Starting point is 00:08:14 That's it. I'm with you. Unbelievable. Vince has to understand that. Vince has to understand why we feel this way. No, Vince thinks everyone is Billy. But be clear, only Billy is Billy. Billy and Jerry.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Jerry, who I'm very disappointed in you, Jerry. You've called this show almost as much as anyone. I'm disappointed in you. All right. I'm going to do my analogy on leadership because I do think that Game of Thrones thing is important. But let's go through a few of these. Doing good. 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:08:43 Go. Somebody car would be easier, I think. That's all right because that's just, you know. 20 seconds doing good. Is he talking to us? No. Have a good conversation with somebody. doing good. How are you?
Starting point is 00:08:59 15 seconds. Sorry about that work with going on. 15 seconds is all I need is this. Big Santa of events, but not if you go to an inferior institution. L's down, little dog, L's down. There we go. That's a good recovery. Good recovery. Good recovery. Larry from Paducah, 30 seconds. Has Stoops ever explained how he lost that team last year? He said that they had some culture issues, but he's not gone into any detail, correct? So the answer is no.
Starting point is 00:09:32 The answer is no. Thanks. Make good use of his 30 seconds. I'm telling you, these guys kind of using their 30 seconds correctly. 859-28027. Bill, come for it. All right, Vince, I'm glad you're listening. Because when you throw the hells up, I hope to God your hand cramps.
Starting point is 00:09:53 I hope they don't have those little bags of Fritos in Louisville. I hope that you know when you go do the karaoke of Simps. Man in ACC, all six of their fans, at the ACC tournament, all six of their fans are going to love it, okay? But at the end of the day, you are not a big dog anymore. You are no more than a toy poodle. And I hope you stub your toe when you have your press conference. But I do love you, buddy. Until then, go down.
Starting point is 00:10:16 You know what the whole like that's the kind of like that's. That's what the fan base feels right now. That's a fan base. Still love you, buddy. I can't articulate that bad. Yeah, there's not going to be Shannon a moment where he's seen. Louisville doesn't have an Alice blue gown. Yeah, I mean, right?
Starting point is 00:10:34 The good thing is, as our bass player pointed out, we don't have to sing Simpleman anymore. I mean, the U of L sheriff, you're going to have to do science projects with. He's the nerdiest person. We have Chan and the dude. What are you and the sheriff going to do going going, wee, we're like, I mean, come on. Come on. This is what you signed up for, right?
Starting point is 00:10:55 He's a little dog now. Dirty dog. Maybe he'll show up in a Jack Harlan. video. I guess that's the best he he can hope for. That's the best he can dance with Jack Harlow next to my car in my backyard. That's it. Go hang out with Terry Miners in the end. Tony Vanity.
Starting point is 00:11:15 I got to be careful. I like Terry and Tony and Nick and you know, but J.B. J.B. Go 30 seconds. Hey, Matt. A long time. First time. Who I? I think this probably about as low-life patrol move as a coach could do. As far as motivation, do you think maybe he sees some writing on the wall at the end of the season for stoop? And it's easier to find a job when you got a job. And maybe we send Big Bird, Billy, to Louisville with you.
Starting point is 00:11:47 You know, all of those things are true. There's no doubt there's got to be part of this that's riding on the wall. You're probably right. It is probably easier to find a job when you've got a job, but he'd have gotten a job no matter what. I mean, I think as soon, if Mark would have been let go at the end of the year, Vince would have had a host of opportunities, not just Louisville. He would have had a host of opportunities. He clearly wanted to do it right now. And that's the part I don't understand.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And the fact that, you know, he just got married. He bought a new house here. His wife's kids are around here. You know, the kind of got the roots were digging in deep here, picking them up and moving not just anywhere down the road to the rival. That's what's hard to accept. He's probably going to make that drive on I-64. You know, when he stopped at the Frankfurt Dunkin' Donuts, that might have been the drive to go to Louisville.
Starting point is 00:12:33 I'm sure it was. I didn't even think about that. Meeting with people right now, probably. You think so, Shannon? Probably so. Yeah. I mean, why else would he be there? I mean, there are Dunkin' Donuts in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:12:42 I could have stopped. You just needed a donut and a coffee. Is there a Dunkin next to the interstate that you would pull right off? Oh, sure. Which one? The one in Frankfurt? Yeah. It's right off the interstate.
Starting point is 00:12:53 So you think he just pulled off. Yep. On the way to Louisville. Yep. Got a donut. Got a donut. Got flipped off. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Got back in his car. Turn KSR back on to hear what we're saying about him. He was going to go along with it. You know, he tells that famous story that a fan stopped him in a supermarket in Lexington when he was thinking about the Michigan job. Yes, that was a big deal to him. Big deal. The fan kind of, he says, changed his mind about that job a little bit.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Yeah. Now the fan throwing the middle finger up in the air at him. What's he thinking about that? Unbelievable. Jesse, 30 seconds. Hey Matt, thanks for taking my call. I'm glad to hear the Vince is listening because I think there's kind of two ways to look at the story here. And I just want to say thanks to Vince for everything he did for the program. The way the program turned around was what led me to buying season tickets a few years ago. But I've also let those tickets go after this year, kind of for the same reason. I'm disappointed in what's happening where he was at. I'm disappointed where he's going, but I can't do anything about him going to Louisville. So just... understand that. Yeah, you definitely do have to say, like, he was awesome here.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And, like, he's... No doubt. Maybe the best recruiter Kentucky football has ever had. Yep. You still went to Lul. You know? Like you said earlier in the first... I mean, I loved John Sina.
Starting point is 00:14:16 But when he turns on Cody Road, Shannon. It still turns on Cody Road. That's right. Right? Like, you still... Still a hill turn. You can't just ignore it. You can't just act like it didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Yeah. You know. You know, I think it was our first caller brought up the name John Sumerall. It's something like we're going to hear a lot between. Yeah. I get all that. But like, Mark Stoops is the coach this year.
Starting point is 00:14:39 So you're going to hear me say, we got to hope it works. Absolutely. It doesn't do us any good to hope it doesn't work. Correct. What does that do? That's just cutting off your nose, spot your face. We want it to work.
Starting point is 00:14:51 You know, so John Summerall, like, is that a discussion to have if things don't work? Yeah, that's a discussion to have. But right now, like, is he going to be the coach tomorrow? We got to try to win with what we got right there. That's very true. Adam, go ahead, Adam. 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Hey, Matt, first time, long time. Who was? Hey, I just wanted to say, as a fan, I'm very appreciative of everything Vince did for the program. Personally, my son has aspirations of playing college football. Vince and Kent's Vince has taken the time to go talk to him several times. But that said, he went to Louisville. I hope we get the chance to run it down his throat, run over that sideline. if we get a penalty, throw the hell down in his...
Starting point is 00:15:28 Did you have to drop that? He did it on his own. Okay. I will say if we win, I don't expect we will. If we go down there and win at Louisville, I'll be on the field. Looking for him. Looking for him. I will. I'll take the penalty. Might need to take some bodyguards.
Starting point is 00:15:52 But I'll be throwing the Ellis Town. If they're able to win at... Louisville this year? Can you imagine, all right, because this is going to be gloom and doom for a while. Can you imagine what the celebration would be like? Big. For everyone involved, if they beat Louisville with Vince standing over there. It's on the sideline over there. Because they're probably going to have a good season. We're probably not. Now, what's the more likely scenario is then Louisville beats us and we have to watch Vince throwing else up. Oh. I can tell you this. To whatever extent, those first couple calls were pro vents. When that comes out.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Like, what's, what are we going to do in the press conference here in two days when he does this? That's happening. It's definitely going to happen. They introduce him and he throwing L's up? I mean, he has to. He's got to show he's all in. He's got to show to the Louisville fan base. He's all in on Louisville.
Starting point is 00:16:44 He does. He has to. I mean, that's what he has to do. Unbelievable. Jesse, 30 seconds. Matt, this is Jesse from Duncan Donuts. I just want to say I drove past him. and gave the dirty bird up in the air, and then he pulled up next to me,
Starting point is 00:17:01 and then I gave him the L's down. Oh, so you gave him the Dirty Bird first. Interesting, you skipped that part when you told the story. Yeah, I know, I know, I know, I did. I feel a little bad, but not too bad, really. See y'all. Go cat. Appreciate the call. Well, then we know the full story.
Starting point is 00:17:19 So now we know that it did. Shannon, there's no question it happened. Yep. Got the dirty bird, then got the Ails down. from both sides that it did happen. Information from both sides. Both sides are reporting. I see Mario,
Starting point is 00:17:31 that's something you can believe. Not Alex Caruso. Straight from the source. On Facebook. Stop overpaying for sunglasses. Check out Shady Ray's and independent American old company started right here in Kentucky.

Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source. the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories,
Starting point is 00:18:28 their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments
Starting point is 00:18:36 to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you
Starting point is 00:18:45 closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more,
Starting point is 00:18:54 follow Timbo Slices Life 12. and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee.
Starting point is 00:19:07 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:19:25 Hey, me. Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. American Soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on the Army Stewart for Chip. I'm Tab Ramos.
Starting point is 00:19:52 I'm Tom Bo. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Polic. I'm not worried about Balligan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. the biggest decisions.
Starting point is 00:20:07 You're going to look at stats and numbers. He has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us.
Starting point is 00:20:28 Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:20:49 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
Starting point is 00:21:10 He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court, licking his fingers
Starting point is 00:21:26 why he got the ball. After you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the, iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Nice.
Starting point is 00:21:45 Good song. 859-280-2287. Text machine. Text machine's great today. Not going to lie to you. 772-774-5-254. When person writes, breaking news, Matt Jones just announced he's running for governor. Source Mario's Facebook page.
Starting point is 00:22:04 The way Mario said it's so convincingly, I thought I just missed it. I just missed the story. He was so convinced. one person writes, Vince Merrow was a great coach here. He's now no longer the coach here. I look at it as if Andy Bashirwick became governor of Russia. I don't have to wish him well as governor of Russia. Fair. Is that wrong? That's an extreme comparison, but yeah. It is a little bit of an extreme comparison, right? One person writes, Matt, do you think Vince gets the bird all the time now, thanks to Jesse.
Starting point is 00:22:44 No, but probably gets it at least one more time at some point. I won't be surprised if he gets it quite a bit. You know, the L just drop a couple fingers. It can be a good handle movement for us. L's down, dirty bird up. It's amazing that he does. All right, let me tell you just one last thing when I was talking about the leadership thing, about the two different leadership styles.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Sort of top down. So let me, I used presidents. Let me also use coaches. Cala Perry was a top down leader. Yes. At his best, would listen to his assistants and then make a decision
Starting point is 00:23:25 and then they all had the marching order. Right. At his worst, he stopped listening to them. But at his best, that was what he did. Right? But it was Cal's way.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Tubby was more, let me kind of hear everybody's opinions. Uh-huh. Yeah. And depending on who he was with, he could be swayed, right? True. Luckily, he had a group of people he trusted, but it was more of a group-think mentality. Would you agree with that? Very much so.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Yes. Here's the negative about that. If a person who operates like that is not firm in their convictions, then they can get floated around depending on the day. If you read some of the books about Biden and Trump, that's when they're at their worst. Whoever they happen to be around that day, that's what they do. So there are pros and cons to each one.
Starting point is 00:24:24 Mark Stoops has always been a let's kind of group think mentality, whereas Cal was top down, he was group think. When Stoops is at his best, he would hear all these people, they would work together, and they would come to a solution. And it seemed to have worked. And it worked. What I think has happened in recent years is as has Mark has kind of, I don't want to say detached, but has not been as strong in his success.
Starting point is 00:24:51 It has become a game of Thrones thing there. Who can be closest to the king? Right. And I think Vince kind of got pushed to the side by some of those people. Now, whose fault is that? I'm not there enough to know, to be honest with you. Is it were things better or worse? I mean, the results on the field have been worse.
Starting point is 00:25:11 But I do think that that has been an issue. I think that's led to some people departing. It's also led to some dysfunction. And so two different leadership styles, both can be successful. At the end of the Cal era, we saw what the negative part of top down looks like. Right. And I wonder if now in the Stoops era we're seeing the negative part of the kind of group think era. Does that make sense?
Starting point is 00:25:36 I think it's a great analogy that you put out there. So, you know, this spring we heard that the culture and everything was better in the UK football program. So do you think that maybe Stoops is trying to go back to that? What made him successful? Get back to that? I think he just has a different group of people he's following right now. Okay. Now, will it be better?
Starting point is 00:25:59 Vince feels like he's not one of them? I think Vince probably feels like he's left out. That's just my sense. I don't know that for sure, but that's just my sense. Yeah. Still, you can't go to Louisville. No. John, 30 seconds, go.
Starting point is 00:26:13 He is now the enemy. I don't wear red shirts. I won't even wear red underwear. And just let me know where I can send my resume for the general manager of KSR. Appreciate the call. You know, yeah, red. I wear red some because of the reds, but I'm not a huge fan. But I'm not going to wear a Louisville shirt except in like a skit.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Yeah, we just saw Mark Pope wouldn't even let one of his kids wear red. socks in his camp the other day. Exactly right. You don't wear red. So when Vince marches out on the news conference introducing him as a coach, he's got a Louisville shirt on, Louisville hat on. Boo. Booting big time.
Starting point is 00:26:48 I like you. See, I don't even know how you could do it. It's just like I said, though, on the Twitter space last night. We do need to remember, though, for me, for Ryan, for Shannon, for Drew, for Mario. I used to think for Billy, but I'll now take him out of that. For those five of us, we will always care more than the people who are employees of the university do. Yes. We will.
Starting point is 00:27:18 For them, it's just a job. For them, it's a job. Now, there are some exceptions. It wasn't just a job for Job B. Hall. Mark Pope probably. I don't think it's just a job for Mark Pope. But for, you know, but there are other people for whom it is just a job.
Starting point is 00:27:36 job. I feel like if you didn't grow up here, you know, or play here, then it's different. Yeah. Okay. So let's imagine I got, KSR ended and I took a job at Illinois sports radio. I'm going to be all in. Let's go on. Right. I'm going to sit there and think of all the Illinois greats like. Okay. Dan Paul Lubbo. What? You think it was Dan Paul Loombo? You're making that name. Who play basketball in Illinois? Whoever. I'll create someone. But I'll tell you this.
Starting point is 00:28:15 I'm going to love it. But you know, then if Ohio State offers me more money, I might now all of a sudden be an Ohio State guy in Illinois. It was fun. I loved it. Let's go Buckeyes. But when it's Kentucky, I can't do that with Louisville and Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:28:35 Like I could do it with. Colorado and Colorado State because I don't really have a connection with either one of them. But I can't do it with Kentucky and Louisville. We always have to remember that these people are what I would be to Colorado and Colorado State. It's a job, not their essence, which is what it is for us. So that's why we should always kind of not be shocked that they do this if they do it. Coaches, especially assistant coaches in football, they bounce around usually every year. staffs change after every season.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Like I said earlier, it usually happens in January, February, before spring football. Darren Williams. Darren Williams is a good one. Yeah. Anybody else? Dan Palumbo. That's not a name. Palumbo.
Starting point is 00:29:22 You think of Joey Palumbo. He was a five-starred Sayer. He's going to be sad, too. Lost as Jeff Ruby's friend. Yeah. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Here's Matt Jones. All right, I am going to tell the Michigan story, and I'm going to go to the phone calls for here just right now. But let me just say, I'm sorry, Murray State. Like, it was awesome. He made the world. It was awesome. They had to win the game twice. Yeah, that ending was crazy. And I guess we'll have to talk about it tomorrow because I do want to talk about it.
Starting point is 00:29:59 But we just can't right now. Yeah. even though it was awesome. It was awesome. We'll try to get Skirna. Skirka. Skirka on later in the week. It was awesome.
Starting point is 00:30:10 And I was as happy as I've been for a non-Kentucky baseball team ever. Same. But sorry. This is what it is. Okay. So did that dude play at Illinois? I found him. He didn't play at Illinois.
Starting point is 00:30:22 I found him. Dan Palombizio. That's not a person. It is a person. He was Indiana, Mr. Basketball. But he didn't play at Illinois. Where do you play? Ball State.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Close. That's very different, Shannon. Ball State and Illinois. I thought he went to Illinois. And you thought he went to Illinois, but he went to Ball State. Went to Ball State. Okay, it's not the same. All right.
Starting point is 00:30:43 So I'll still say just Darren Williams. Nick Anderson apparently went there too. Yeah. All right. Let's go through here. Fake Barney, 30 seconds. Vince is now my second favorite Vince or even lower behind Vince Giff's. Benz Gill, Matt, I'm joining all the women 15 years older than us to say, go rest high in Dixie Highway Vapes.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Little dog, your time of Kim a lot is done. Traded Jeff Rubies for trash bag juice at tailgate. Crappy science museums and hepatitis days have come. Wow. Wow. Mike Barney comes from the alt. It's been a while since we've heard I had a song for Vince.
Starting point is 00:31:32 It feels like an old school KSR show. It kind of does with some of these older folk. All right, let's go to Joey. 30 seconds. I can't, I can't be serious after fake Barney. But,
Starting point is 00:31:47 so the issue is a roller coaster for me. I was really tore up. I was really upset. And then I realized it was probably something petty that sent him to Louisville from Kentucky. So I'm not going to let that.
Starting point is 00:31:55 You know, I really don't think he can, the absence of Vince Marl is really going to affect us that much program-wise. But then I thought, after your Twitter space, I couldn't sleep last night. I was so upset when you said that Joe Kraft would support him. I didn't say that. Let me be clear. I didn't say that.
Starting point is 00:32:13 I said, someone asked me, and I appreciate the call, would Joe Craft still be Kentucky and I said yes. Kentucky will always Joe Craft is like us. Joe Craft is like us. Kentucky first. Bleeds blue. Bleeds blue. He is not going to be switching to Louisville.
Starting point is 00:32:33 The question was, is it plausible that he could do something for Vince at Louisville? And I said, I didn't know, but it wouldn't shock me because they are best friends. It's definitely plausible. It's plausible. I didn't say it would happen. I said it was plausible. Kentucky will always, though, be first for them. I'm sure of that.
Starting point is 00:32:57 but would it shock me was my question and I said no I think you're fair what you just said about that yeah so I do want to be clear about that the stuff is named after Joker Kentucky's still going to be first but you know I would use it as an example of like take my friend tall tall ran for the Republican governor of Kentucky
Starting point is 00:33:25 Tall is a Democrat But if he ran for Would I give him money? Yeah, probably Because he's like one of my best friends That's the way I think that they would see What is Joe Crash relationship with Mark Stubbs then? I assume positive.
Starting point is 00:33:45 I have no reason to assume But Vince was who he was the closest to Yeah. Much more so than anyone else. More than Mark, more than Cal, more than anybody was Vince. Peggy, 30 seconds. You said that Vince is married to the president's secretary.
Starting point is 00:34:05 Yeah, I don't know. She still, I don't think she still works in. No, she doesn't. But that's, that they were. She did work there. Okay. Okay. Well, then that shows up my scenario that he knew what was coming down.
Starting point is 00:34:19 But going to Louisville. Really, Ben? Come on. Give us all a break. and as far as him and Mark fighting, well, because Mark, in my opinion, has become a me, me, me, me,
Starting point is 00:34:35 coach. There you go, Peggy. With her take, Peggy comes in, again, people coming out. We haven't heard them for a while, just like, I'm still disappointed in you, Jerry. Tomorrow you got to make amends. Bill, go ahead, Bill.
Starting point is 00:34:49 Times about have on your guest. Something if you all always say on the show, that I cringe every time you say it is, you've got to do what's best for you. And so I know Matt you will say, well, I don't think this is best for events, but should he be allowed to make that decision himself? And anyway, that's my fault. Are you saying you disagree that he should do what's best for him? You're like, I don't get your point, totally, Bill.
Starting point is 00:35:18 On the show, you all will say, well, he's got to do what's best for him. And I just think that that's not always the case. I hate that he's gone. He did a great job for us, but, you know, he thinks it's best for him. You all always say, well, yeah, that's true. I appreciate the call. But you know what? Yeah, you do have to do.
Starting point is 00:35:40 I mean, okay, let's say I had no connection to Kentucky. I appreciate the call, Bill. And Vince was my friend, and he said, should I do this? And I go, well, you got to do what's best for you. But I do have a connection to Kentucky. Yeah. And I do. Should he do what's best for him?
Starting point is 00:35:55 Sure. But that doesn't mean it's like when people say some, like I always hate when people who go, you know, in today's world, you can't say what you want. Yes, you can. But you also have to deal with the reaction to it. Right. You can say it. But the world doesn't guarantee you that people will not get mad at you. Very true.
Starting point is 00:36:17 I will stand up for anybody's right to say something and not go to prison for saying it. But I'm not going to say you have a right to not get yelled at back. Vince has a right to go to Louisville. If that's what's best for him, he should do it. But he's going to get flipped off at the Dunkin' Donuts. Like that's part, like, you don't have a right to get the reaction you want. You have a right to do your behavior. But Ryan, the reaction is what it is.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Like we said, I'm looking at the show, if he's gone to Michigan State, today we are celebrating Vince Merrill. But he didn't. He's going to our rival down the show. street, our in-state rival. So this is why the, uh, the emotions are so high about this scenario. Yes. Luther, 30 seconds. Listen, enjoy the second rate fan base down on Floyd Street. They're bum. You're a bum. You make me sick. The fan vestment makes me sick. Enjoy the train track. And hey, bit, could have brawn late. Luther. Dennis. Go ahead, Dennis.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Coach Marrow, man, I used to love. But now I despise. You are a trader. You have betrayed the UK fans. And now my question to Matt Jones is, who do we go after? It's going to be a great recruiter. Someone like a Wesley, Woodyard, yes or no? I would say, if it were me,
Starting point is 00:37:46 I would make C.J. Conrad, the tied-in coach for this year. I think he's done a great job. I appreciate the call. Players love him. I think he's done a lot of the really good X&O. I think C.J. Conrad is great. Is that your long-term recruiting option? Probably not, but I don't know that they're going to be able to fill that
Starting point is 00:38:03 Ryan by August. Yeah, this timing of this is kind of weird. That's part of what makes it so bad is the timing of it. Yeah, I don't even know where CJ is now. He was at EKU for a year. And I think he went somewhere else last year. Oh, is he? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:15 He would be my pick. But, I mean, listen, the loss of Vince is less about the tight-end coach part of it. Correct. That is a replaceable thing. Good point. You can replace a coach. It's that perception now. To me, it's the recruiting and the perception.
Starting point is 00:38:31 The perception is huge. I mean, listen, how many times does an assistant coach leaving make national news at a school like Kentucky? Never. Never. But Vince did. And it's all we've talked about all day. It was on sports. Like it was on the sports center social media pages.
Starting point is 00:38:49 It tells you how big of a move this was. That tells you how big of a move. And in college football, in the college football world, it will definitely be seen as something. All right, let's do Jared real quick. 30 seconds. Okay. Vince Merrill, the dirty bird finger and the L's down should now be the official Vince Merrill greeting.
Starting point is 00:39:12 He did that to UK football, UK athletics, and now BBN. Don't go to the loserville down the road. The real Jerry out. There you go, Shannon. He says he's the real Jerry. Oh, okay. Aren't you disappointed in Jerry? A little bit.
Starting point is 00:39:28 I was a little bit disappointed in Jared. It was our second call, too. He's probably called more about football than anybody. By the way, this catch by the guy on the A's was insane. He's had like three catches like that in the past. That's one of the best guys I've ever seen. I mean, he used the wall to lift himself up. That's really unbelievable.

Starting point is 00:40:31 I don't want you to have to hold and then not get on. We'll get you tomorrow. We'll take a break and be right back. This case. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer
Starting point is 00:41:07 beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sportslice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slicleif 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show,
Starting point is 00:41:31 I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:41:47 Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:42:08 And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:42:31 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nasree. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night bases on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:42:49 Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:43:05 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. American Soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramers sending on the earnings score at the chip. I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer,
Starting point is 00:43:28 you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policicic, I'm not worried about Balagan, I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here.
Starting point is 00:43:57 Experience it all with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Taboramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. Good conversations during the break. Great conversation. You know, Kentucky Sports Radio, right, Shannon? Oh, yeah. Can't get into it.
Starting point is 00:44:17 I wish we could, but we can't. All right, so I don't think I've ever told this story before, have I? I don't think you've ever told it on the air. All right, so this is a true story, and it is, I use this story just to sort of, of remind you that people that we talk about as coaches, et cetera, are at their core just human beings with human emotions where little things can annoy you. Yes. Right?
Starting point is 00:44:46 So I have a friend who, like a week and a half ago, I had a little negative interaction with. And when I stepped back and looked at it, I was like, this is over something really stupid. Right? Yeah. And sometimes it's just over, especially with men, just like pride. A lot of it, a lot of times it is. A lot of times it's just pride. Yep.
Starting point is 00:45:06 So this is a true story. And I feel like it's been eight years. So you can say something. You say it now. So when Vince first got offered a gig somewhere else that I can remember, a big one, it was Michigan. Michigan. This was when Harbaugh first got to Michigan, right? So what, we're talking maybe 2017?
Starting point is 00:45:29 I don't remember really when it was. Yeah. and I would often during that time talk with Vince and he would tell me his thought process and he called me and we this was one of the times we were talking about it and he said something to the effect of you know I'm considering this and I was like you know man I'd understand Michigan it's Michigan football it's horrible I get it before we had our 10 win seasons
Starting point is 00:45:53 it's Michigan I think that we I think maybe we hadn't had a 10 win season but we were good we were on the up and up right true and And I said, I understand. And he said, well, I don't really want to, but I don't really want to leave. I go, oh, okay. And then he said, but it doesn't feel like Mark really cares if I stay or go. And I said, oh, I was like, he hasn't really expressed that to you. And he goes, uh, not really.
Starting point is 00:46:25 And I went, oh, okay. Well, I was like, I'm sure he does. Remember, these are lifelong for him. Yeah. I'm like, well, I'm sure he does. Hour later, phone rings. It's Mark. Mark says, you think he's going to go?
Starting point is 00:46:42 And I said, I don't know. You know, I'm not sure. And he said, I don't understand why Vince won't just call and tell me that he wants to stay and that he wants to be here. And I said, well, why don't you call him? And he was like, well, I mean, I think he should call me. And then I call Vince. I'm like, why don't you call Mark? And he was like, well, if he wants me to stay, he should call me.
Starting point is 00:47:12 I'm not making this up. I know. I'm a radio host, Shannon. Yeah. Both of these coaches who are both having success and our friends are both saying, why won't the other one call me? So I called Dwayne Peevy. And I said, Dwayne, this is what they're saying.
Starting point is 00:47:33 And he was like, are you serious? I said, yeah. What do we do? And he goes, all right, I'll call them both. And he three ways him in. And 20 minutes later, I get a call from Vince. He's staying. All it took.
Starting point is 00:47:49 All it took was the two of them getting on the phone together. But neither of them wanted to make the first phone call. He just underpriced. It took me getting Dwayne to bring the two of them together. Dwayne, by the way, the basketball AD at the time. He wasn't even over football. It took bringing him in to get these two people who'd had a lifelong relationship to just put their egos aside and talk to each other.
Starting point is 00:48:24 Yep. Right. And 20 minutes later, it was fine. And I always think about that story to think like, don't let stupid stuff like ego get in the way of a good thing. Okay, fast forward eight years later. I don't know what all's happened in the interim since then. I don't talk to Mark nearly as much as I used to back then, almost never. And I still talk to Vince, although I happened in a while.
Starting point is 00:48:52 I don't know. Maybe that, maybe like it wouldn't have taken a phone call this time. Maybe it's a lot more than that. Probably is. but it is always important to remember that sometimes when you're sitting there and thinking about these big things, sometimes it's just human beings and their frailties that lead to things like this happen. Well, you talked about it and Shannon just said it. A lot of times it's pride. For especially for men, it's pride.
Starting point is 00:49:14 So hearing what you just said, I blame you and Dwayne Peeby for this split this week. Why didn't you guys get them together last week? Well, Dwayne doesn't work here anymore. And I did not know this was going down. So I'm not sure that it would have played out exactly. exactly the same this time. But I mean, are you, at its core, let me ask you this. I have a strong answer to this, but I'll ask you, at its core, do you think this is ultimately
Starting point is 00:49:39 about two friends who just couldn't make it work out? I think there's some truth to that. I think it comes down to this is how I take it. I think Vince has seen the writing on the wall. He doesn't like the way things are going at UK. He's got a chance for go to three. years, I'm taking it. Friendship aside, I think it was about one of the
Starting point is 00:50:04 the perception of the program is not on good standing right now. Not the way he thinks it should be. I would disagree with that. I mean, I do think that's probably part of it. I mean, if they had won 10 games, would he, yeah. But I do think, I think this is just a relationship that kind of broke. That's kind of sad. It is kind of sad.
Starting point is 00:50:26 But he's going to Louisville. So like, anywhere else, anywhere else, I'm okay. He could probably go to an SEC school, I'd be okay. You can't go to Louisville. Yeah, can't go to Louisville. So, you know, I wish, I wish it hadn't happened. But now we're going to still talk about this more, obviously,
Starting point is 00:50:46 but going forward, I'm on Kentucky side. Yes. You know, we got to do the bet. Like, we got to hope we win, right? Doesn't do us any good to hope we lose. I'm never going to be the person that says, well, I hope we have a bad year so we can move. Like, I'm never going to be that guy.
Starting point is 00:51:03 We need it to win. Now, do I think we will? I'm not real confident right now, but I hope we do. Does the temperature of Mark Stoops' seat get a little hotter now? It was already hot, but now it's like scalding. I think so, too. Now it's like scalding.
Starting point is 00:51:17 I think so too. Because we're going to have a summer of recruiting where they're probably going to get a lot of guys and we're not. Will some people decommit that Vince were brought in there? Two commitments, so I don't think you can say it can't be that many people to be commits. We only had two. Storms have been hitting Kentucky like crazy, and there's a few things the folks at Bluegrass roofing and consulting want you to know.
Starting point is 00:51:36 They're not storm chasers and will not knock on your door after a storm. They are not a door knocking company. Bluegrass roofing and consulting does not require to you assigns any sort of agreement so that you feel hostage from the company. They will tell you if you need a roof and you can only, you only have to exchange money after the job is complete. So none of these dirty little things roofing companies. have done. Seriously, congrats. I wish we could have given you more time because you deserved it after that win. Bye-bye. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
