Starting point is 00:01:31 Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to The Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Starting point is 00:02:43 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Monday, June the 23rd. I'm Matt Jones here in Lexington, Kentucky. You can give a shout. It's Clark's Puppet Shop phone line, 859-280, 22.
Starting point is 00:03:04 2287. A Vision auto glass text machine, 772-7752. 7754. And this edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. Call T.J. I'll make them pay. It has been a big weekend of sports. It has been insanely hot. Shannon, you're the only one that was in Louisville. I think Louisville is the hottest place. I would say pits of hell, Mojave Desert, Louisville this weekend in terms of heat. Yep. And for all those people back in January when it was three degrees, is going, I can't wait for summer. Well, it's here. You got your wish. I saw a map that said that on Saturday, Louisville was the, like, second hottest major city in America. What's it really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:46 I don't know if it's just because it was against the water or what. Now, I was walking it. Dumb decision. I had fun. I mean, it was good for me, but dumb decision. I walked 16 miles. Oh, my goodness. And the heat this weekend?
Starting point is 00:04:01 Saturday. On purpose? Well, I'd planned it. without looking at the weather. Like, I planned it like Monday. I knew I had the day off. And I was like, I'm going to do, and I even figured out what my route was going to be.
Starting point is 00:04:14 And then Friday, I saw, like, what the weather was. And I thought, okay, wear sun tan lotion. It's going to be right. Start early in the morning. Start at 9. Still almost fell over. Yeah. So, Shannon, just, I'll give you the route.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Okay. All right. My house up to Douglas Loop. Yeah. Okay. over to like U of L, you know, past Bellerman over to U of L, down to the waterfront, waterfront all the way out River Road, turn on to Frankfurt Avenue, Frankfurt Avenue back to my house.
Starting point is 00:04:49 What were you doing? What was going on that you wanted to take 16 miles walks? I just wanted to spend, I was like, I'm going to do it, Drew, leisurely. Okay. So this wasn't for charity or anything. No, there was no one cheering me on. It was going to be, I was like, I'll go and then, you know, I'll stop it. I'll have breakfast somewhere.
Starting point is 00:05:08 And then, you know, you'll get somewhere else and go to a bookstore and then somewhere else for lunch. And then, you know, that kind of thing. And it was all fine. I was actually kind of talking trash to myself, Ryan, like, see, people think you can't do this. Heat. And then I got on River Road. Shannon, you know, there's no shade on River Road. I'm aware.
Starting point is 00:05:28 And it's down there next to the river. so that heat just collapses on it. And there was a moment I said, well, I have to call an Uber to get home from here. But I made myself do it. The walk up Frankford Avenue was hard. And then we got home. But it was 27,000 steps. They issue heat advisories for a reason.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Yeah, I knew it was hot. They didn't need to tell me. You picked the hottest day of the year to go on a 16-mile-old. The advisory didn't bother me. I could tell what it was like. Did you take proper steps? Did you hydrate before? I did a pretty good job hydrating.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Were you wearing a hoodie? No, I was wearing a t-shirt. I did a pretty good job hydrating. Hide it along the way. Yeah. Yeah, I would stop somewhere, have a lemonade. Yeah. I got a cookie.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Oh, it's good. It's just see marathon runners stop and get a cookie and eliminate. Well, most of the country is under a heat advisory for the next couple of days. Might as well just keep up with it. For the next week. I didn't even like get my mail. Yesterday I was down. I only did like 17.
Starting point is 00:06:30 hundred steps. It was a much more, it was a much more not doing anything day. We're on the front end of the weekend. But I did enjoy it. The city of Louisville was in, like, it felt like a very happy mood in terms of there was, there were like multiple festivals. They had the Pride Festival. They had the Juneteenth Festival. There was like an art festival. So everybody was out. But most people I don't think stayed out as much as I did, Ryan, but there were a lot of people out. They go out in the morning, do their festival, noon. I'm back home. I'm going home. I'm not fighting this heat anymore. Yeah, a lot of people, I think there was like, like at the pride
Starting point is 00:07:02 festival, I think people had pride, but only enough until they started sweating, Shannon. And then they were like, that's plenty of pride. Now it's time to go back inside. Yeah, an hour pride's probably enough on a day like that. Yes. But then I watched my Reds collapse. Yes.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Cardinals. On Saturday, that was the worst. But Ellie Day-la-Cruz, puked and then hit home run. Why not? He made you feel better. Well, he was in that heat too. They were in St. Louis. That baseball stadium can get very, as you know, can get very hot. Oh, yeah, we were watching the game, and those guys, I couldn't believe they were out.
Starting point is 00:07:36 They kept showing the heat index on the field. It was wild. And so he pukes and, what does they call it? Shannon, puke and rally. Is that what it is? I think that's what it is. He puked, rallied, and then in a home run. I thought that was pretty impressive.
Starting point is 00:07:49 I noticed as they got exhausted, they would run over the dugout for a lemonade and a cookie so they could get back out there and get back to being athletes. Are you mocking the lemonade and a cookie? It's a choice. like it. No, it was fun. I kept up with your all series, too. I don't know if you all were doing yeah. We lost two to one. Saturday was the bad one. We're up five, two in the eighth. We blow it. You all win. I came back. Now, of course, the Yankees are this week. Yes. Sold my tickets for tonight. Huge, huge money. So they'll probably still have a big crowd,
Starting point is 00:08:17 even though they'll be hot. Yeah. Tonight will be huge. Aaron Judge ate at Jeff Rubies last night. Did you take the whole team? Aaron Judge took the whole Yankees team to Jeff Rubies on him. Jeff being the subtle guy that he is did put it out on Twitter He doesn't like the publicity No I mean if though Aaron Judge brings the Yankees He doesn't want any attention
Starting point is 00:08:39 He's really camera shy It was interesting He ended up in the picture That was weird to me too I would just like to have been in the server Could you imagine those tips Oh think about what that tip would be First of all how much you think it cost
Starting point is 00:08:50 To take the whole Yankees team The Jeff Ruby's Man roster I see you got 28 men roster They said Aaron Boom pay for the coaching staff. So he just had to pay for the 28 players on the team. How much is that meal?
Starting point is 00:09:04 Are they drinking? Probably not drinking. Probably not a lot. They play today. So you think $10,000, $15,000? Yeah, you're still at about $200 ahead, I would think. Yeah, at least. No drinks. So you think only like $5,000 to $7,000. Yeah. I'm paying, Shannon. I'm getting extra shrimp, some oysters. Maybe they got Wagu, though. That changes things.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Pile it on. That mac and cheese with the lobster in it that costs like $30. I'm getting that. So sold today, and good thank you to whoever paid for him. You just got me a nice little trip. Then tomorrow I was going to sell, but the other, if you look at the last 10 years of or at least five years of Reds baseball, Ellie was the number one. But the number two is this pitcher pitching Tuesday night making his debut. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:09:57 Chase Burns. He's probably the biggest pitching prospect they've had since Hunter Green. He debuts against the Yankees. So I think about that. They debut him against the Yankees. Hey kid, glad to have you up here. Good luck.
Starting point is 00:10:15 So I feel like you got to be. I was there for Ellie's first night. I was there for Matt McLean's first night. I feel like I got to be there for Chase Burns first night. Yeah, you got to go see one of the Yankees games. I get making a little bit of profit on the first one. but catch one of them, certainly if it's got one of your future talents. If you were a manager, though, would you throw him in his first game against the Yankees?
Starting point is 00:10:34 I like that strategy, because if you can go out there as a, you know, a rookie and not be intimidated by pitching against the Yankees, then you can go against anybody. Yeah, I think that's probably fair. But it's a, that's quite a stage to go putting on. I think a lot of managers would do the tiptoe method. We're going to throw you against the Diamondbacks on a Wednesday night, you know, with the Yankees. The Rockies. Nope. Maybe he wants it.
Starting point is 00:10:59 Maybe he went up and said, give me the Yankees. Give me the Yankees. Hey, Aaron Judge, you want this? Got to start against somebody. Why don't I go out with the bangs? He started off with the Yankees. You should go and say at least you saw Aaron Judge play at least one time. That's kind of cool.
Starting point is 00:11:10 No, I just, I think anytime, it's exciting when there's a dude. I've been hearing about, like, well, they drafted him like, he was a second pick in the draft two years ago. So you've been hearing about him for two years. Last name is Burns? Burns. Burns. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Burns. Yes, Chase Burns. who's second picking the draft. So you got to go giving him a shot. Give him a shot. See how he does against the Yankees. I mean up. I think he was second.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Like Paul Skeen's in him. Was it really? I think so. Being such a big game with his debut and then it being the Yankees, what kind of book do you pull out for that one? Is that a... This may be a Sands book. Oh, no book?
Starting point is 00:11:43 No book. Wow. Not even a magazine? I might still take a magazine. Might still take a New Yorker. Just in between innings. There is a lot of downtime. Does your seat generally have shade?
Starting point is 00:11:55 No. Well, I mean, it'll be night game. During the day, like I went on Juneteenth. Brutal. Wow. Right in the sun. You don't even get an inning of break. It is right in the sun. You know, over the years I've told you about the two bald brothers twins that sit to the right of me. Shannon, I didn't bring it up because I was a little worried. I hadn't seen them at a game all year. And I thought either they haven't renewed their tickets or, I mean, they're at the age. Yeah, and they're older. You're like, well, I hope it's okay. Life happens.
Starting point is 00:12:29 You're not, remember. They're born together or they die together? Right. Well, the thing is, I've had tickets for five years. They've been there. We've never spoken. Remember, they sit directly to my right, one row in front, never spoken. But I feel like they're part of my family.
Starting point is 00:12:46 They're the only people that I see there all the time. Two brothers, they don't speak to each other. they sit in dead silence, watch the game together, they look exactly alike, and they never speak. But I feel like it's almost through some comfort that they're there.
Starting point is 00:13:05 We go through the first month and a half the season. I haven't seen them. And I was sitting there thinking, you know, if they're dead, I wouldn't even know. And it would make me sad. Game the last week,
Starting point is 00:13:18 there they were. And I wanted to give them a hug. I thought you were. And I realized, Shannon, they don't know me. Yeah. And so they don't feel the same connection to me that I feel to this. I feel like you should at least go up and speak to them now that you know they're still alive. Like, hey, glad to see you're still here with us.
Starting point is 00:13:34 It's great to have you back here after I thought maybe you were gone. No, they were just tired of the Reds. The summer of Ellie was done for them for a while. They were back on. They waited to the heat advisory. Like, now let's go to the game. Maybe selling those tickets, you know, making some money like you did. Last thing, I also was in this weekend or this more.
Starting point is 00:13:52 of a social mood. You know, normally we're so busy during the week and we talk so much that, like, on weekends, I don't, I kind of, specifically, Kentucky's not playing, like, don't really want to interact. But I decided if I was going to walk, I was going to do all this, I'm going to interact with people, right?
Starting point is 00:14:07 So if I saw you in Louisville and you had a Kentucky shirt or hat on, I would make conversation. Okay. Just give them a go cat, or would you talk to them? I might just say, you know, yeah, I might say, they go cats or then just start a conversation.
Starting point is 00:14:24 If they wanted to, then we did it, whatever. A couple times they knew who I was. Sometimes they didn't. Here was the universal thing. I probably talked to 20 people over the course of the weekend. 20 and O on opinions. Number one, everyone thinks we're like winning the national championship this year. I don't know if Mark Pope realizes, but he has created an,
Starting point is 00:14:51 an atmosphere of we're going to be really good this year, Drew. The optimism for basketball is through the roof with my 20 random Kentucky fans. Yeah, I think that kind of speaks for the whole fan base. Even though we're only getting tiny snippets of these summer workouts, people are so fired up right now. They've done a couple of the satellite camps. And even just watching them basically do nothing at those camps and interact with kids, it's getting the fans that are going to those so fired up.
Starting point is 00:15:18 I didn't take his picture, but I saw the divert. of UK fans when I walked by the pride thing and there was a guy wearing the rainbowiest of short shorts and a t-shirt that said Pope is dope. That's how I knew that everybody had it. But then the second thing they all thought, everyone thinks we're going 0 and 12 in football. I mean not like, oh, are we going to be good? I'm worried about football. A, we stink.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Ryan, the two viewpoints I've never seen at this maybe since what Joker and Cal you know that was first year or two a Cal and then Joker I've never seen it
Starting point is 00:16:07 everybody was just like we are going to be awful and out of the 20 people two of the 20 had canceled their season tickets you know they it is kind of like complete polar opposite It's all the great optimism and then now the pessimism about football. I almost wish the seasons were flipped.
Starting point is 00:16:24 We had football second. You have a great basketball season to ease the worry of a bad football season coming up. And just finish on the bummer? Yeah. At least we have the great basketball season. So a football struggle is like, yeah, well, it doesn't matter. We still won't basketball. Yeah, I don't want that.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I don't want to end with a bummer. But, I mean, it's not a scientific study. It's 20 people I ran into at random cookie places or restaurants or, you know, coffee places, but the Kentucky optimism for basketball through the roof, pessimism for football, down to the floor. It does feel like the old days.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Stoops did a great job of breaking out of this, but, you know, Jared would complain it about all the time. Like when madness hits, the excitement already flips. We can already feel it coming months, months way ahead of before we even get to that point. 859-28027. Text machine is 772-7525-4. Do you share those two pieces of optimism and pessimism?
Starting point is 00:17:19 and more including Ryan's pacer's out. It's KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Starting point is 00:18:19 Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
Starting point is 00:18:35 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about, wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person
Starting point is 00:18:51 while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing,
Starting point is 00:19:05 growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search, learn the hard way and listen now. What's up fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:19:27 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
Starting point is 00:19:54 And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:20:19 This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42.
Starting point is 00:20:42 A rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And no, it did make me have more respect for you, Shannon. I couldn't do 50. Was it hot when you did it? Yeah, it was August.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Yeah. But we did start at night. You started at night. But it was almost tougher because, like, the last 10, 15 miles was so hot. It was. We did the show. It was very hot. I already walked 35 miles and it's 90 degrees.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Yeah. I have a lot of respect for you doing that. Like I don't know how I started as a goofy challenge and you did it and you crushed it. So a text machine is 772-745254. What person writes Matt, I saw you walking downtown. I was going to say something, but then I didn't. But way to go. You look like you're in shape.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Better shape than I was. It's still pretty impressive to walk 16 miles in that heat. Yeah. Especially for a man your age. You know. Wow. Whoa. Okay, what was that about?
Starting point is 00:22:00 It's impressive. Man your age. It was impressive. Most men your age probably couldn't do that. Did you see Mario's face when you said that? He knew that was rude. You could just see what he did it. You know over the years, I got a, Shannon, a funny message.
Starting point is 00:22:16 a woman I haven't talked to since we dated in law school. 2002 at Duke. Wow. She sent me a message on Facebook that said, My best friend at work, son is coming to play sports at Kentucky. If you happen to meet him, please be nice to him. His name is Jalen Lowe. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Okay. It's coming to play sports. at Kentucky. And I said, I wrote her back and said, I bet I'll run into him at some point. Pretty familiar with me. Yeah, he's going to be pretty good coming to play sports at Kentucky. It is a small world situation.
Starting point is 00:23:00 She works in Houston, Texas, works with her mom. Wow. Haven't talked to her since 2002. And that's the conversation we have. Maybe this brings you all back together. She's married. I can't wait to watch you. Let me.
Starting point is 00:23:14 8,9, 28, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000. 2287 are you sad about the Pacers? I mean, really, the best team won. OKC was the best team all year. But the Pacers, the run they went on got everybody excited, especially for Pacers fans. Yeah, Pacers fans. Man, it was awesome.
Starting point is 00:23:27 They weren't supposed to beat Cleveland. They weren't supposed to beat the Knicks. They weren't supposed to compete against O'KC. Took it to Game 7, and then your superstar gets hurt in the first quarter. I mean, I was proud of the Pacers. When Halliburton makes that move and then they show it, and it's clearly he tore his Achilles. I'm not even a Halliburton fan, but I felt bad for it. It's a terrible way to go.
Starting point is 00:23:47 It's not just a terrible way to go because I think Oakey was a better team. They were going to win the series. I think they were going to win last night. But now he's probably out next year, right? And so now you had all this thing where probably the fans could have been so excited going to the offseason either way. Probably were the favorites in the East next year. And then he's out for the year. That stinks.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Yeah, I was a neutral observer. But that hurt watching him go down. And that slow-mo replay, you could even see it snap. I mean, we all knew what happened. You knew immediately. Yeah. Part of me thought, though, even though it was very early in the game, the way he started, I think he might have stolen it from them in Game 7.
Starting point is 00:24:22 No, he was. Stop. See, that's what they all get to delude themselves. Oh, we would have won if he weren't going to win. Oklahoma City was better. Yeah, he hit three three. She was telling the crowd to shut up. Yeah, and he also used some language that you should not be using in a public form. He was in his own. But O'C. was going to win.
Starting point is 00:24:39 What about our guys? Yeah. SGA? Yep. Okay. didn't start besides Quaday Green. Came here as a backup.
Starting point is 00:24:49 And became only the fourth player in history to win the MVP, win the scoring title, and win the old championship in the same year. The other ones, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Jordan, and him. That's pretty good company.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Pretty good company. You couldn't start over Quade Green when you first got here. It's amazing. The year he had, we'll go down one of the best ever in NBA history. just did everything. And they're such a young team, he's the old guy on the team.
Starting point is 00:25:18 He drugged them to the victory. And then Case Wallace, who John Caliperi would not make the point guard because we had severe Wheeler on the team, starts is the fifth or sixth man for a championship team. I mean, think about those two guys, what their careers were when they started here. And now they're the two that have a title. I'm not going to say, Shannon, that makes me frustrated at see. your Caliari, but it is also a testament to those guys. There are two
Starting point is 00:25:47 big examples of the downside of the one in done era where we just got a little example of them at Kentucky, and then they went on to do greater things. Wallace had a great game last night, too. He had 10 points off the bench. When they were pulling away, he had his own little 5-0 run. Even though I'm pretty neutral in the NBA, I was very excited
Starting point is 00:26:03 both those guys got a ring. And now, Shay, I mean, is he the best Kentucky player to ever be in the NBA? Yeah, we had this conversation last week. Right now, he's probably second to Isel. but it's like Issel Davis and him. That's like the best season that you could have. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:18 He did it all. He was unbelievable. And, you know, I did not, I think nobody saw it coming what he's become. I didn't even really think he'd be a start. So he's way exceeded my expectations. I will say, I was saying, Ryan, Casey Wallace should have been the point guard all year long. We'll look back at that year and say they should have given the ball to him.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Sure. Should have given the ball to him. Because he was always good. and he was always that team's best player. And a couple times he got the playpoint guard at Kentucky, like when Severe was out with the injury. We were good. We were really good.
Starting point is 00:26:50 And then he went right back. And this isn't a criticism to Severe, but Kays and Wallace is an NBA really good player, and they just wouldn't do it here. You know, he had some big steals. He's become a good defender. He was a good defender here. That was the one thing he could do was guard.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Yep. I think there's a good chance we have the same conversation when Reed Shepard wins a championship with Houston. Or when Rob Dillingham. We're going to, you know, he couldn't even play. It's very frustrating. Jonathan, go ahead, Jonathan. Hey, man, how's it going?
Starting point is 00:27:23 Good. What's up? Hey, I have a conspiracy theory about Vince Merrill. I think him and Mark are still good friends. And I think what's going to happen this year is he's going to tank Louisville. and I think at the UK U of L game they roll out a wooden horse at halftime and him and Kenny Payne jump out
Starting point is 00:27:52 I wish that were true I think he's all in I watch the press conference I appreciate to call him he's all in he's already calling us the school down the road right he worked he fixed his L too he's doing right now said I've been working on it I keep getting pictures of him at Jeff Ruby's
Starting point is 00:28:11 man's eating there every night. Listen, Vince, there are other restaurants. Like, Louisville's a good food city. Maybe you should take him out and show him some different restaurants. Yeah, I'm sure I'll see him sometime. But I think right now, I think the Louisville people probably are like, you don't need to be a picture of Matt anytime soon. I thought he might have been on your walk with you.
Starting point is 00:28:30 No, I almost walked by Jeff Rubies. I almost was like, let's go see if he's in there. He probably was. He probably was. But no, he's all in on them now. And we had the decommitment, right? Yes. We had our number one player who he had brought decommitted.
Starting point is 00:28:45 You got to think he probably ends up over there. I think so. So it's the way it goes. We'll take a break. Be right back. KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J.
Starting point is 00:28:54 He'll make them pay. Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Hey, welcome back. Techie Sports Radio. Summer is here. Starting point is 00:29:30 Europeans are melting. Well, I don't know, like, completely. But there's a big soccer tournament in America right now, the FIFA, club World Cup. Okay. So all the teams that won, Shannon, all the various leagues in the world are here playing each other right now. Some of the games are in Cincinnati. Oh, are they really? Some are in Nashville.
Starting point is 00:29:52 But everybody, but there's been a bunch of upsets. The teams from South America have been beating the teams from Europe, even though the teams from Europe are better. And it's making the Europeans mad. But it's because it's so hot. and the Europeans can't handle it. Does it not get hot in Europe? I've never been here. Not like it does here.
Starting point is 00:30:13 No, I mean, it's a different level of hot here, especially, you know, in Spain and Germany, or excuse Spain and Greece, it can get pretty hot. But when you get to England and Germany, it doesn't get as hot as it does here. So there was a German team playing in Cincinnati, and they had their bench sit in the locker room during the first half because they said it was too hot, shaded for them to sit on the bench. I'm not kidding. Look it up.
Starting point is 00:30:36 This Dortmund team. They are in Cincinnati. And if you read the newspapers in Germany, they're complaining because they play again in Cincinnati Wednesday. And they're like, I can't do it? Can I do a German accent? It's too hot in Cincinnati. That's very good. A bunch of wimps.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Any Cincinnati is too hot. Yeah. And we don't like it. It's good. They're lucky we didn't have it in Arizona. They've really been in trouble. And then like the English teams, they played somewhere and it was 85 degrees. and they were complaining it was intolerable.
Starting point is 00:31:10 At 85? At 85. The South American guys on their side of the theater are laughing at it. And the South American guys are playing great and they're beating them because Drew, they're not as hot as the European. So they're like, what, Cincinnati? Come to Rio. It's a little different.
Starting point is 00:31:25 I saw a video of a fan. I think he might have been down in Florida. He was somewhere in America complaining about the heat, but he had the temperature that they automatically put on a video and it said like 78 or something. And he was going crazy about the way he's going to make it. There's a game in Nashville where one of the British teams was playing, and all these pale Brits were like, you know, and I think it's kind of funny watching them all be upset.
Starting point is 00:31:51 But the German team stuck in Cincinnati. They are so angry right now. What a bunch of wimps. Go to the dugout, go into the locker room for half, don't even watch your team because you're too hot to sit on the bench. What a bunch of wimps. The draft, by the way, is Wednesday. It's almost here.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Do you all realize that the NBA draft is Wednesday? Well, they plugged in enough the last couple days on the NBA playoffs. So who's getting drafted? Kobe Brea? Yeah. I think it looks like he's going to be. He looks like he's going to get drafted. I would be surprised if he's not drafted at this point.
Starting point is 00:32:17 I think he's going to get drafted. Jackson Robinson, Jay Billis says yes. Most of the mock drafts don't have him in it. But Jay Billis says, I guarantee somebody picks it. The way he said it was such confidence. It's almost made me if he had talked, made me wonder if he had talked to a team or heard more than because he is. Like you said, in most of the mocks, he's not mentioned, but Billis was all about it.
Starting point is 00:32:36 And then Amari, Williams is kind of projected right at the end. Yeah. I'm going to say yes on Amari. You're going to say yes on Amari. It's going to the Knicks. So, Bray, is everybody a yes? Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Amari, you're going to say yes. Yes. I say yes. I'm going to say no, but it's because I'm going to say yes on Jackson Robinson because Jay Billis is way too confident about it. What are you going to say? I'm going to say yes because I feel like if Jackson Robinson hadn't gotten hurt, he would have gotten drafted.
Starting point is 00:33:02 So I think they're going to draft him on that. I will fade Jay Billis and say no. So look in the camera, tell him Jay Billis he's wrong. Jay Billis, you're wrong. You're wrong often. Wow. That was harsh. Shannon, you going with your friend, Jay Billis?
Starting point is 00:33:17 Or are you going on your own? Yeah, my BFF, Jay Billis. He knows his basketball. I'm going to say he's right. And Robinson does go. So I got all three going. So let's say you get all three. The reason I bring this up, let's say we get all three.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Arkansas is only good to get one. Yeah. A dude's going to get draft. Sure. Which I count him as us anyway. We're going four. They're getting zero. So really we're getting four.
Starting point is 00:33:40 It would be, I mean, it will be a height of irony if Mark Pope gets more people drafted in his first year than John Calpher. That is something that no one on earth would have predicted. No one would have predicted that. I mean, not that there was a ton of complaining about Pope last year after that press conference in the excitement, but one of the big negatives was like, well, the NBA draft won't matter anymore. We won't have guys to fall in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:34:03 Nobody will get picked. And here we are with more of Kentucky players to talk about. What odds could I have gotten on more Kentucky players get picked than Arkansas? Especially when Arkansas had Boogie Flan going into the season. He was in luck. He was in luck. The Trayvon Brazil guy. You had Johnny Davis.
Starting point is 00:34:21 He said he would get him drafted. A dude, Big Z. Carter Knox. Carter Knox. This was Billie Richmond. DJ Wagner. They had eight potential guys to get drafted and he may end up with one and we may end up with three. And Brea may get drafted
Starting point is 00:34:37 before Adieu even. A do probably goes before him, but what if Braya gets drafted before I do? It's possible. That's going to be close. Some of the box have Braya right next to a do at the beginning of the second round. I mean, no one expected this. And heck,
Starting point is 00:34:53 next recruiting class, Pope might end up with more five stars and higher rated players than Cal in the 2026 class, too. He's doing well there. It's going to be the greatest night in Arkansas basketball history. It could be the greatest night. One player gets to drive. When person writes, Matt, that German accent may be your best one.
Starting point is 00:35:08 You should do it more. It's hard to do that one. It does seem like it takes a lot of energy. You got very red. You're a better Wukosh accent than... Well, I'm the interrupted by Matt Jones show a few weeks ago. You debuted in Australia and one I'd never heard before. A French one?
Starting point is 00:35:23 No, it's French one. It was French. It was very good. Bob and James Town. Go ahead, Bob. There's a big weekend in Russell County. My friend, Pam and Terry Stevens, Kentucky Derby. horse chunk of gold came in place second in the Ohio derby and then Mark Pope brought his
Starting point is 00:35:43 team to Russell County oh yeah Mark Polk came down and I mean it was awesome he brought the team down opened it up the gym and Russell Springs there for everybody all the fans the children I mean everybody had a ball it was awesome I saw a lot of those videos and I appreciate the call Bob I saw a lot of videos of the UK player. You know, they went to Russell County and to London. Right. They went to the two places most hit by the tornado. And I had people write me who went.
Starting point is 00:36:17 I saw the videos. They ended up, they did the camp, but then I think they just opened the doors and let people come and get pictures and autographs. And I heard universal praise, obviously for Mark, but also how good the players were. Jaden Quaintens, especially. I just had people say, seemed like the nicest,
Starting point is 00:36:35 kid in the world. I have people all weekend on the text machine. We're sending pictures of their kids with the various players. You know, that's what you want. What an awesome thing for them to do this weekend in two places that I think it was really appreciated. Yeah, to reach out to these areas that needed a little boost, a little something to make them feel
Starting point is 00:36:53 good about what's happened recently. So yeah, it's a very good honor. And this summer's when you start hearing about some of the players personality. Like about this time, after Kirk Crease is the guy that everybody was talking about was very personal. So it's good to hear about Jayden Quaitens because I knew really nothing about him outside of his basketball ability. A guy on KS. Board was at the one in Russell County and he was kind of doing updates throughout
Starting point is 00:37:13 and he was talking about how close the team is. Like they're all buddies and cutting up. Already look very close. But the thing that stood out, he said this is already Mo Diabate's team. Really? He said when he speaks, everyone listens. And him in Oway, it's very clear they're already leading. He was a leader in Alabama too. So. Paul told you that. Remember when you interviewed him, he said he is the leader in the locker room. He's the one. Everybody gravitates towards. He's the guy. There was one negative, though. I think this one happened at North Laurel's camp.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Brandon Garrison lost in knockout to a nine-year-old. Oh, no. I don't know what that means for Brandon Garrison in the future, but we can't be losing to nine-year-olds and knockout. I don't have him starting anymore after hearing of that story. He's not going to start? No. Cody, go ahead, Cody. Hey, Matt, I had a basketball and a football question for you. Okay. I'll start with basketball. I think a lot of the fan base is at least optimistic in us winning a championship in, say, the next five years.
Starting point is 00:38:09 We can at least agree it's possible. So what advice would you have for Pope that he doesn't do what Cal does and wins a championship early, but then goes another decade without anything? And then my football question is, is it really all that bad if we kind of fall apart this year? Not fall apart, but as the season we're expecting, and that forces Mitch to make a higher because The last few to three of his hires have been red hot. Both of their questions are good. So let's start with the basketball.
Starting point is 00:38:39 Obviously, I appreciate the call. You can't, titles don't grow on trees. Win it. You know, did it hurt Tubby? Did he won a title in his first year? And that was the expectation? Sure, but guess what? He won a title.
Starting point is 00:38:50 He did. Right. Did it hurt Cal that they were so good the first few years? Maybe, but he fell apart with or without those early titles. When? If you have a chance, as I always hear, people say, in other sports, the amount of time you have to win a title is small. When you get it, you got to take advantage of it. Second thing is in football. I want this team to win six
Starting point is 00:39:10 games, seven, whatever, but six specifically, I want to see us make a bowl. I'd like to see Mark Stoops work here. If it's not going to work, if the six wins are not going to come and it's seven, then I'd rather it be three or four. I want it to be an easy. The worst scenario for Kentucky is five and seven. Yeah. That's the worst scenario. that's enough success to convince them to keep going. And I know 5 and 7 doesn't sound successful, but you probably, to do that, have a good win. You've got to beat somebody good.
Starting point is 00:39:41 You're going to beat somebody good if you've gone 5 and 7. You improve from last year. You improve from last year, but the fans will not be won over at 5 and 7. So the worst records you can have is 5 and 7. That's the worst. It's kind of like cows last year. I didn't want us to lose to Oakland. I wanted us to go to the Final 4.
Starting point is 00:40:01 but what would have been worse would have been beaten Oakland and losing to NC State in the second game because you could have talked yourself into what NC State might have made the final four and we would have been right back floating to where we were by losing Oakland it made it clear what needed to happen that's how I am this year number one I want us to win six I want Mark to succeed I want it to crush it but if that's not going to happen then I'd rather it be three or four than five because five is no man's land. Do you agree? Oh yeah, just make it obvious. I hope it goes well. Heck, you know, I have as many stoop's frustrations as everyone else. I fire off my own motivated jokes about once a week, but I really want them to do well. But if it's not going to end
Starting point is 00:40:46 well and you're not going to get to a bowl game, just rip the Band-Aid off and make it ugly. So it's a clear decision. The whole buyout thing we talked about last week, though, I think makes it a little more tougher decision for Mitch than we realize. I didn't realize that's what it was laid out. Yeah. But. there may come a point. Maybe you have to. You have to. 859-28027.
Starting point is 00:41:07 We're going to pick our place that we're our next place to go in a game that I've created. Okay, good. So I'll tell you about the game and all of that, but we'll be right back. KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying.

I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:42:24 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so rapidly. up in the chase, that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
Starting point is 00:43:25 And he knows without Luca and Austin. And Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:43:52 Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got. at the bar like, you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:44:13 This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wanted. you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Good song choice, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:44:55 Lynn, L-E-N, right? I'm surprised you know that one. One-hit Wonder from the 90s. I remember. I loved it. Still my sunshine. Yeah. I remember this is when I was in college.
Starting point is 00:45:06 8.59-2-80-22-87. Speaking of places, it was hot, college world series, hot on the field. Also hot with the manager. Yes, it was. Manager comes out, goes, hey, man, what's happening over here? Next thing you know, he's kicked out. One of his chubby friends falls over. Then the first base coach gets kicked out.
Starting point is 00:45:27 Then it's two-game suspension. Everybody loses their mind. First of all, shit he had gotten kicked out. I don't know what he said, but if he said one of the magic words, that's why I assume what happened. Can't kick him out second game of World Series. First inning. Can't kick him out. What if he says one of the magic words?
Starting point is 00:45:43 How many times did he say it? Yeah. First of all, I looked at his lips. I didn't see a magic word. Okay. But let's say he did. You eat it. It's first inning.
Starting point is 00:45:52 I read online somebody thought it was he wanted to get kicked out to motivate his team. He clearly, based on the comments after the game. I don't know where you saw that. They're not kicking you out in the first. Score was one to nothing. Yeah. Shannon, he did not do it on purpose. No.
Starting point is 00:46:06 And then the one guy walks over there, falls down. Yeah. And then blames the um, first of all, he fell on his own. He did. Absolutely. Completely fell on his own. And they said two game suspension. Gave him a two game suspension because he said he bumped the up.
Starting point is 00:46:21 That's on his own way. You cannot help that chubby little ump can't keep his balance. It's poor form on the umpires. You got to have some restraint, especially first inning championship. Of the college world series championship game. As the umpire, you have to take it a little bit there, you know? Yes. And apparently he was only asking what was the warning for?
Starting point is 00:46:44 Like, he wasn't even arguing. And then when he was like, the manager was a little in his post-game press because he's like, he looked at me and shoot a grown man. You can't shoe a grown man. Well, okay, slow down, grown man. Like maybe he just didn't want to talk to you. Either way, you can't kick him out. Can't keep.
Starting point is 00:47:02 These, the groups of people in society that have the highest opinions of themselves versus least ability to hear a different opinion are college coaches and referees. And then you put them in the same place. Recipe for disaster. It is just little man syndrome. And the question is who gets to be the littlest man? and in this case, I think the umpire was a littler man than the manager. The ump was by far the smallest man. I did enjoy the manager after the game saying,
Starting point is 00:47:39 I can't be responsible for another grown man's athleticism. Talk about how. It was a funny lie. He's like, I didn't bump him. It's not my problem. He can't stand on his own two feet. He goes, I always think you should take responsibility for your actions and I will, but I can't be responsible for another grown man's athleticism.
Starting point is 00:47:57 That was kind of fun. And ESPN put it in slow motion. You see him fall and fumble and stumble around. That guy really sold it to, man. He did like a flip over backwards. Yeah, he was like Rick Flair flopping around on the ground. Yeah, come on, man. The coach said it best with that, and he said he was embarrassed because he fell down in front of 25,000 people.
Starting point is 00:48:16 And he took it out on me. And that's what happened. That's exactly what happened. He was embarrassed. Plus there's a little bit of it's LSU and it's Coastal Carolina. Like I'm not saying help him. but don't take away their manager right as soon as the game. They're the Shanticleers.
Starting point is 00:48:34 It was crazy that happened right off the ballgame. That's why when it first happened, I saw that online and he did that on purpose. He got kicked out on purpose and motivated his team. Not the last game of the year. It was only one to nothing. Like the game had just started. There's no way that was on purpose. These umpires and referees, it is not about you.
Starting point is 00:48:54 The only person who makes themselves more about something that's not about them is Stephen A. Smith at the NBA finals. But these reps, it's not about you, man. It's about the teams, and they insert themselves, and it's, that's what happens. Greg, go ahead, Greg. Hey, guys.
Starting point is 00:49:13 I want to be as optimistic as anybody about this basketball season, but I remember in the spring, all the talk was that we desperately needed one more shooter, and we lost out on a few guys. Did we ever get a shooter? And if we didn't, how's that going to impact this season?
Starting point is 00:49:29 Well, I mean, they ended up, it depends on whether or not you think Aberdeen is a shooter, right? So when they wanted that shooter, that person that is to use the phrase a shooter, they didn't get, they lost the kid from Sam Houston State that Ryan guaranteed was coming. But then they got Aberdeen. Now, is he, the question is just how good a shooter will he be? Well, he's not Kobe Brea and he's probably not even the kid from Sam Houston State. But he's good. So the question is between Aberdeen, Chandler, Noah, Cam Williams, and all that,
Starting point is 00:50:04 do you have guys good enough to shoot? And we'll just have to wait and see. So I appreciate the call. There is no Kobe Brea coming in, but I do think they have 10 guys that can make a three. And we all wanted a shooter. We wanted someone you think of as a true sniper like Kobe Brea. But part of that was also Kentucky fans, just wanting an absolute perfect roster. Yeah, we won every play. I mean, we were already pretty set even before Aberdeen. But it's like, oh, one more thing. Let's get a guy that shoots 45 from 3.
Starting point is 00:50:31 You didn't get exactly that, but Aberdeen can shoot it. And then, of course, he has other things he brings. It's like in a Vegas buffet. Like 80% of the food would be fine, but you want all of it. We want the best of the best. We want all of it. Liam, go ahead, Liam. Got some points, optimism about Kentucky football, shockingly.
Starting point is 00:50:49 That Calzada, he beat Alabama. I mean, that's a good start. He was the first game off Southland, Conference QB. You know how else was first team all set off at Alton conference? Cam Ward. All right. Is that Calzada the next Cam Ward?
Starting point is 00:51:03 Look at that. That's two pretty good points. Keep them coming. I like it. Keep them coming. And is Mark Stubbs motivated enough to get us over the hump this year? All right. So the motivated thing.
Starting point is 00:51:16 How much time we got, Shannon? 30 seconds. All right. We said this. We said this last Friday. I'm all in on the most. motivated thing. I know it started as a joke. I know it started as a joke mocking Mark Stoops. Now they got to lean into it. Agree. Lean into it. That picture that the one dude made with him
Starting point is 00:51:35 smoking the cigarette and having the bourbon, it's cool. Like, I know it was used to make fun of him, but it's actually kind of cool. UK needs to lean into it. Motivated Mark Stoops might be all we have this year. So I'm for it. And I hope UK gets by it too. We'll be right back. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
