I'm Matt Jones at the Little Crooked Creek Safari in Shelby,
Starting point is 00:03:02 County, Kentucky, in between Lawrenceburg and Shelbyville, where there are llamas, zebras. Did you say an ardvark was in there? An ardvark and all kinds of stuff. And you can give us a shout to Clark's Puppet Shop. Phone line 859-2802287. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine, 772-77524 in this edition. It's sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. If you call T.L. Starting point is 00:03:26 Are you asleep? Since you got here, sunglasses on and haven't spoken a word. You all right there, Drew? We're outside, waiting for the show. What's up? I just didn't. You and Mario, we're talking ball over here the whole time. I've just been listening.
Starting point is 00:03:38 I'm just making sure you all right. You got your men of KSR hat on, Ryan, and we are here. You've already put the shirt on. Yeah. For the Little Crooked Creek Safari, ready to go. This is such a cool place, and probably the place 99% of the people don't even know exist. It's a hidden gym out here, right where Anderson County, Shelby County, and Spencer County all meet. It's where this place is.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Yeah, I mean, you got to want to find it. Because, like, you're in your, you're in your, you're, you're in your, you're, You're back here. I say in the hills, but it's not really in the hills, but it looks like what it looks like when you go back through eastern Kentucky. But you're not far. I mean, this is less than an hour from Lexington. All kinds of animals. You can look on, you said you have a Facebook page, right? The little Crooked Creek Safari. They've invited us out for the KSR goes around the states on the blue, on the, what's the tour? Kentucky Department of Highway Safety. summer tour. Drew, there is a zebra just a few feet from you. Yeah, I was actually just thinking. I think this is my first career zebra sighting.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I've never really been a zoo guy. I don't know where else I would have run into a zebra, so I think whatever this fella's name is right here is my first zebra. Might even get a photo later. Well, I mean, if you've never been to a zoo, I think it's probably safe to say that you haven't run into a zebra. I can't think of where I cross past. with one. So this is an exciting day for me.
Starting point is 00:05:02 I think... Camel, I think I've seen a camel before. Where have you seen a camel? It's like church play. I'm pretty sure we rented a camel at Christmas, something like that. Me and Camel, I've crossed paths with camels before. You're a Methodist, right? I grew up going to the First Presbyterian Church in Madisonville, Kentucky. So the First Presbyterian Church has the money for Camel rentals?
Starting point is 00:05:22 Well, we would go over to the First Baptist Church. Oh, that's where the rich guys were. Yeah, I'm pretty sure they had camels as part of their Christmas. Yeah, those Baptist, all that money. But zebras, this is my first one. Exciting day. Yeah, well, it is very nice, beautiful out here. Yeah, it's going to be a little hot, but that's okay because we're under a tent,
Starting point is 00:05:41 which was very nice of them to set up. And, Ryan, are you going to go have some fun with these animals? I am, yeah, Mario already took a little tour, but Eric Swisher, he owns it out here. He said he's had it for like 18 years, but it's only been open to the public for the last two years. He's getting big crowds on the weekends that come and see him. They got kangaroos. They got a sloth in there. They had a baby camel that was talking to it.
Starting point is 00:06:00 us right before you got here, so it's been kind of fun. Baby camel was talking to. He was not happy with us being in his area. We're by the where all the babies are, the baby zebra, baby camel, baby, what is that, a llama out there? That's a llama. Baby cow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Well, I've seen a couple of those, but some of these other things, I haven't seen. They have, what do they say, a sloth? A sloth. It's in a room when they have to keep it like, what do you say, 88 degrees, two sloths. Two sloths. Well, that's good. They can be friends. I think that's important.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Well, I appreciate you. These folks having us out. They won the contest, and we are here in Shelby County. We're also, in a couple hours, we're going to leave here to go to the GSF test kitchen to finalize the new menu items. I hope you have saved room in your belly for all the food we're going to eat this afternoon. Man, it's tough. They brought out donuts. We've got homemade chocolate chip cookies, and I know.
Starting point is 00:06:54 You're going to eat those two. I'm going to have to. I got to eat those chocolate chip cookies. Look, and they're staring me right in the face. Good, yeah. You're excited for our afternoon of food? I remember when we did this last time, you didn't need to eat for like two days. Yeah, it was easily, easily the most full I've ever been in my entire life.
Starting point is 00:07:09 I almost got a hotel in Shelbyville instead of driving back to Lexington. I was in actual pain. I ate so much food. And the nice people there, they warned me when they started. They're like, just take a bite and don't eat the whole menu item because you're going to eat 60 things. I was eat two of everything. Couldn't help myself. Yeah, so we have narrowed our new menu down to, like,
Starting point is 00:07:29 20 items, but we have different versions of all 20. And so we're all supposed to taste different versions of all 20. We know we're keeping the wings and the cheese logs and a couple things exactly the same. But there are some things like we're getting like a new burger and we're getting new taco thing and we're getting new, just various stuff. Getting new boneless wings and they're giving us multiple versions cook different ways of all of them. And so you got to try them all or how are you going to know which one's better? You have to try one bite of each thing they give to you to try to determine which one you like the best. But that's the kicker.
Starting point is 00:08:09 I was eating every version of each thing. Exactly. Because when you like – no, you're supposed to eat every version of everything. One bite, one bite. But the thing is when it's good, you don't want to just eat one bite. You're like this is good. I'd like multiple bites. And that's – Mario, be careful.
Starting point is 00:08:24 This is beginning. You don't want to make that beginners. Like, for instance, we're getting new potato wedges. They apparently have eight different types of potato wedges. You got to be careful, or you're going to end up with more potato wedges than your body can handle. So it's not just one bite. It's a little bite. Take a little bite of each thing they put in front of you.
Starting point is 00:08:42 But it's easier said than done. But I am looking forward to it, and it's going to be nice to kind of finalize the remodeled KS bar menu. Yeah, I cleared my schedule. These shorts have an elastic waistband. I'm ready to get in the lab and lock in and make some bad decisions. All right. So the draft was last night. usually one of my favorite nights
Starting point is 00:09:00 year. Now, the first time for Kentucky that there hasn't been a first round draft pick since 2009. Also, the first time for John Calgary. No draft pick since 2009. So at least when it comes to... His is 0.7. Longer streak for him. Since 07. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Worse for him. Yeah. John Shire was the coach that had the biggest, you know, seen there. So let's just go over some of the things I enjoy the draft, less for the basketball and more for the pageantry and all that's happened. Cooper Flagg went first. That was boring.
Starting point is 00:09:33 This suit was boring. Just him, everything about him was boring. I mean, he's going to be really good, but he's boring. Dylan Harper, I had a trend. I looked at all the players. Five different players wore black on black on black, which is a lot of all black, which is what I wore to the barstool party. So I feel like I'm kind of fitting in with all these NBA players, but five different
Starting point is 00:09:54 guys all black. Yeah, you know, big is not of your life. Black slimming, I assume they're all in pretty good shape, but they could have let themselves go in the lead up. Big chains. Big chains. Like a lot of big chains. I think the chains are back in. So it's maybe time for us to get one.
Starting point is 00:10:08 I think Jeremiah Fears already spent all of his money on his chain. It is weird. A chain and a tie is an odd dichotomy, but a lot of chains. You were kind of a trendsetter wearing your all black out in Arizona, but now you've got to start wearing the big chain. It's time for me to get some bling. I need some. VJ Edgecom went to 76ers.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Then we started with Conniple. This is where I thought things started getting interesting. He went forth to Charlotte. He has five brothers. There are five male nipples. A lot of nipples. And the five of them each have a name that starts with a K. So their parents named all of them with a K.
Starting point is 00:10:48 I'm going to go ahead and say, Drew, I think that's weird. I don't understand why people want to play game. with their kids' names. I'm going to have five sons. We're going to name them all K. Plus, of all the letters, that's the one I would have stayed away from if I'm going to have multiple K's. I would have done a different letter. I think that's too many K's. And then their daughter, they named like Lauren. Like they didn't put, make her part of it. I think that's weird. And none of the Kays were traditional Kays. It wasn't like a Kevin. It was like kerosene and Kirtianite and Kettlebell. I mean, it was just.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Kettlebell. Yeah. That set the tone for we're getting away from the basketball. These are the draft memories that we're going to take with us. All kettlebell conifle. They were just all up there looking like clones of each other. They lined up like those Russian dolls. You stack up. Yeah, they lined up like them. They were babushkas. Then you had Ace Bailey, who apparently the only team he didn't want to go to was Utah, and so Utah just picked him anyway. And they're like, you're just going to have to get to learn Salt Lake, my friend. The basketball gods played one over on him. Yeah, he publicly said, I do not want to go to Utah. You know, I want to go there?
Starting point is 00:11:53 They were like, I don't care. You're going there. Then Trey Johnson, Shannon, I don't know if you saw his outfit, but I thought of you. Suit on top, shorts underneath. He looked like the ACDC guitarist. Angus Young. Angus Young. Why did he wear that?
Starting point is 00:12:08 I don't know. Why is he wearing shorts? Mario, did that look good to you? You did think it looked good. A tie, a jacket, and shorts? No. I did not think it look good. Listen, I don't know fashion, but I thought that looked ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:12:22 It kind of startled me because on the tight shot, it was just his waist and up. I was like, that's a pretty good-looking suit. You know, I think it was double-breasted, had some nice-looking buttons on it. But then they slowly zoomed out, and you saw the shorts and, like, the white socks. That's when it became maybe the most ridiculous suit of the night. Jeremiah Fears, then the BYU kid, and then we got to Colin Murray Bowles, who when Toronto picked him, they said Colin Murray Bowles, Toronto Raptors, and he cussed and went beep. Like he was very angry.
Starting point is 00:12:50 He had to go to Toronto. He had to have known the camera was going to be on him. I thought it was weird to have that reaction. Yeah, that's supposed to be one of the greatest moments of your life. You get all the work, your whole entire life to get drafted in the NBA. You have that moment, and then you show, make yourself like an A-hole. Whoa. That felt strongly?
Starting point is 00:13:07 That's strongly about it? Yeah, come on, man. The Raptors are spending millions of dollars on you. Show a little appreciation. By the way, that's my first bust of the draft. He's got, I like college. He's the first one. Yeah, I mean, we played against them.
Starting point is 00:13:19 He was fine, but. He doesn't really have a great build for the NBA right now. You remember I said this, Colin Murray bust. Then Malik, the kid from Duke, went, what a great story. I think I knew his story, but I didn't really focus on his story. Born in the South Sudan, which if you don't follow the world news, is in just awful situation, maybe one of the worst situations in the world with Civil War and all that, goes to Uganda, gets discovered at 13.
Starting point is 00:13:47 He's walking down the road. And somebody goes, you're really. tall. Have you ever thought about playing basketball? And he said no. And they said, well, why don't you come to this camp? And then five years later, he ends up at Duke in the number 10 pick in the draft. That's one of the, I mean, what an amazing story. Guys, walking down the road in Uganda after having escaped from a war-torn country and then becomes an NBA draft pick. If that's not like the best of humanity, I know he played for Duke and that makes it, but still, that's amazing. Yeah, I think he went to Luel Dying, started.
Starting point is 00:14:21 to that academy. It's like the only basketball court in the country. He went there and then war number nine for Lul, so very cool for them to that country. They need to do a documentary. You know, that South Sudan team almost beat the United States. And Luald-Ding started the team, but Winian Gabriel played on it. The fact that the South Sudan, which is in just a horrible civil war, could create a team that nearly beat the United States. Luald-Ding is like he should win some sort of humanitarian award. Number 11 was. Cedric Coward, which the announcer said was Colin Cowherd had gotten picked in the draft. Did you hear that?
Starting point is 00:14:57 No, I didn't hear that. Yeah, the announcer said Colin Cowherd has been picked by Memphis. I was like, well, I don't know how well he'll do, considering he's 55 and doesn't play basketball, but... He was considering coming back to school. I'm just glad he stayed pro. Some French guy I'd never heard of got picked 12th. Then Derek Queen went 13th. He went to New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Best joke I saw during the draft, because, you know, Zion's in New Orleans. Somebody wrote, Zion got excited because he thought New Orleans picked Dairy Queen. Shannon, that's a wrong thing to say. But it is funny when they said Zion thought they picked Dairy Queen. I got to tell you, I already thought Derek Queen had a chance to be a bus because, you know, when you're chubby at 18 years old, staying in shape, and then you go put him with Zion in New Orleans, which has the best food in the world, I am already on. on bust alert. If he's down there with Zion in New Orleans, I'm already worried about it.
Starting point is 00:15:55 You got to keep those two apart. I tell Derek Queen, listen, Zion's on this team. You're not allowed to meet him. You don't get his phone number. You'll only see each other on the court. I do not want you to hang out. You don't want you all together. Y'all near a bowl of gumbo together. Zion, you are not allowed. They put that app that they're doing for the teachers and the students in Kentucky. Zion, you are not allowed to contact him outside of official capacity. It's got to go through the Pelicans if you want to talk to Derek Queen. No training table safe with those two guys. No, that's good.
Starting point is 00:16:26 All right, so I want to go over the second half, and we'll preview what Kentucky guys. I think one Kentucky guy goes tonight, maybe up to three, but certainly one. We will take a break. We are here at Little Crooked Creek Safari in Shelby County, Kentucky. Bet you didn't know it's here. It is. We'll be right back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game.

Starting point is 00:17:46 and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different. intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Starting point is 00:18:37 This is Cliver Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff, like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of the first. the game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. American soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart for chip.
Starting point is 00:19:29 I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, inside American soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions.
Starting point is 00:19:46 If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. and the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen to Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos
Starting point is 00:20:10 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Some people like the Trey Johnson Shorts thing. One person writes, Mario knows more about fashion than all four of you combined. First of all, it's not nice. True, dress is all right. You should listen to him.
Starting point is 00:20:31 The shorts combo looked good. I know it didn't. I don't care. It did not look. No. He'll regret that. Because that picture's going to be with you forever. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:20:40 Like, you're going to look. You're in the Senate, man. Like, I love hoodie and shorts as much the next guy, but put on some pants. Same thing for the draft. Put on some pants. Well, it's kind of a trendy thing, these NBA guys wearing these suits with shorts. I've seen it. Who else has done it?
Starting point is 00:20:53 I saw LeBron, the first guy I saw it do it. You didn't see LeBron do it. Bobron has done it walking into a draft. Not the draft, like an NBA championship game. Well, people wear crazy things to the NBA championship game. I mean to the draft. That's like your wedding night. That's the biggest night of your life so far to that point.
Starting point is 00:21:07 Yeah. One person writes, Matt, I have three brothers. All of our names start with Kay. You don't know what you're talking about. I do know what I'm talking about. I think it's stupid. Like, you can have it. Like, I'm not saying, what do you mean?
Starting point is 00:21:18 What is it? I don't know. Like, you can think it's cool. I just would say to you See, actually, I think the parents did the guys a favor by having some crazy first name Takes the attention off the last name. Canipal?
Starting point is 00:21:32 Yeah. It's an unfortunate name to have. So you go with K for the first name for the alliteration. I'm just saying if you're going to have a lot of the same letter, K is the one I'm staying away from. If I'm a parent, I would not have. Kilometer out there.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Yes, I'm not for that. All right, so let's go quickly through some other things. First of all, then My favorite moments of the draft is when people come out of the stands. Yeah, my boy Yang. Yeah, they picked a guy named Yang Hansen, never heard of that person, not convinced it was a real person, but he came out of the stands. I like that.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Seven-foot Chinese guy just coming out of the stands. My favorite moment of the draft night. All the mock drafts had my guy Yang in the second round. He said, nay, I'm going middle of the first, and I'm going to show up anyway. He didn't even have good seats. He was bought a more back. He didn't have good seats. He did not have good seats.
Starting point is 00:22:20 I thought they'd at least put him on the front row. Imagine you're like the local Knicks fan and you want to go check out the draft and the seven-foot guy on a white suit from China sits down next to you. That is true. You'd have to be like, he might get picked. There's a seven-foot Chattie's guy in a suit next to me? That's strange. I'm a Yang Hanson fan. Walter Clayton Jr.
Starting point is 00:22:40 Yeah. Goes to Utah. 18th. That's good. That's another example of a great. That's the good part of the portal. Starts his career at Ohio. Plays hard.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Ends up at Florida. Wins the national title. Top 20 draft. pick you got to love that love the his whole story and I'm so glad he's got a chance because he's he's got the type of game that can succeed in the NBA so good luck to him he was with petino and Iona yeah yeah he was with Iona yeah he went from Rick to Golden to NBA that's right two Illinois players went back to back Yacchanis and Will Riley how about that and we beat them in the tournament when I watched them go back to back I was like yeah you may have gone
Starting point is 00:23:15 back to back but who took the L in Milwaukee and it was Illinois and at that point in the night, it felt like every pick had been from another country or Kentucky played them last year because it felt like, I think there were maybe six or seven in the top 20 that Pope and Kentucky played a year ago, including those two, beat them. Does it make you feel old that Jason Richardson's kids got picked? I thought Jason Richardson was like, I thought he'd only been around for eight or ten years, and now he gets picked. That's kind of wild.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Let's do those now. Even with Dylan Harper, I remember watching Ron Harper. So I'm at that point. We all are where it's like, oh, no, it's the second generation's coming to the league. Brooklyn had five first round picks, five, and used them all. They're going to have the youngest team in the world. They picked a guy from Israel, and then a guy from Yale back to back, basically Brooklyn trying to mirror the community therein.
Starting point is 00:24:04 What did you think about it? Danny Wolf is your guy. Be careful. Danny Wolf's my guy. There was a lot of cried. Danny Wolf's brother cried a lot. Now, I think it's sweet. Don't get me wrong.
Starting point is 00:24:18 But I feel bad for Danny Wolf's brother. Did you see, Shannon, did you see the meme that's coming? From now on, when somebody's happy because of something that happens, they're going to show poor Danny Wolf's brother. Oh, my God. He was ugly crying. I mean, he was crying as much as anyone has ever cried at anything. I mean, have you ever seen a person out of happiness cry more than that?
Starting point is 00:24:45 No, he probably needed to dismiss himself, get some oxygen. and get that together. Nothing wrong with crying in public or on TV, but he was becoming the story in the middle of that moment. There's something about when it's your brother, though, man, you feel so proud to be that your kid brother out there, and he's going to be a millionaire in the NBA. I can see why he got upset.
Starting point is 00:25:03 He was gasping for air. I mean, that was excessive. That was heavy cries. Can I just say, like Walter Clayton, Jr., when he cried, I thought, you know, I feel that. I feel for him. I feel happy for him. The kid from South Sudan.
Starting point is 00:25:17 When he cried Shannon. That was I thought really, really sweet. But Danny Wolfe's brother, Oh, it's like a good grave, dude. Calm down. I mean, it was down a little bit. I mean, it was just,
Starting point is 00:25:29 it was a lot of crying. Oh, my God. It was kind of, you know, like you go to a funeral, and there's somebody who's not even that close to the family that is just absolutely weeping, and you're like, okay, thank you. But, like, you can't cry more than the wife and the chest. children of the people.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Like, you've got to bring it down a notch. I thought Danny's brother just need to bring it down just a notch. Maybe that's why, you know, all those games in the pickup games in the driveway and shooting around in the backyard. Maybe that's what kind of just kind of caught up to me in that moment. Well, I guess. All right. So then let's go to tonight.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Kobe Brea, I talked to Sam Vicini, who's one of the big NBA draft gurus. I said, is Kobe Greer going to get picked tonight? He said, most likely. He said there's like eight different teams that have him fifth or sixth on their board. So he felt like one of them would end up getting him. But he said there were some teams that don't have him on their board at all because of his defense. So do you think he, you think he ends up going? I think he gets picked.
Starting point is 00:26:33 I have not had any, I can't name drop any analysts that I've talked to. Jonathan Gibney didn't pick up my call. Remember Jonathan Giveney? You talk about a guy. We remember when he was like 18 years old. He started his own. Remember he started a fight with us one time? Do you remember that?
Starting point is 00:26:48 I remember the fight. Oh, there's a, if you go back in the KSR archives, there's a Jonathan Givney, Drew Franklin, Warren. Really? No wonder he didn't answer? You don't remember that? I don't. Yeah, no, I'm just going to, to the original point about Kobe Brea in my Bifugni
Starting point is 00:27:03 I've only been reading mock drafts like most people, but a lot of them have him pretty high in the state. See where Kobe Brea goes? I didn't watch one second last night, but I'll watch it tonight because of that. I was wondering why you weren't comment much. You didn't see any of this. Not one second. So you don't even consider that.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Sports Radio show that's predominantly college basketball. You might want to watch the draft. Nope. I can catch up with online. You can't catch up. You didn't see Danny Wolf's brother cry. Not much of what we talked about did you know. He didn't even see Trey Johnson's suit.
Starting point is 00:27:33 Nope. The suit you commented look good. You didn't even see it. I'm sure. How do you not watch the draft? Or catch up before the show. Easy. Not watched the draft.
Starting point is 00:27:44 I had no interest. I watch it tonight because of Kobe Braia. That's it. But, like, if you missed the draft, like a little show pro. But he commented, like, confidently, yeah, about all of this, and he didn't watch any other. Remember, KSR as Ryan learns the news. That is unbelievable. Good to know that he had a good suit on.
Starting point is 00:28:01 What music is playing? Oh, it's my phone. Never mind. We will take break. Music to go to break. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J.
Starting point is 00:28:13 He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton. and mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. We are on our Kentucky Office Highway Safety, KS. Safe Summer Driving Tour. We are at the Little Crooked Creek Safari in Shelby County, which is a very cool little place up here. Well, I say up here, back here and off the back roads in the corner of three different counties. Nice folks for having this. Got a little crowd of eight to ten people here. That's a perfect amount, I was just saying. When you get this much, it feels like you're talking to people,
Starting point is 00:28:49 but you're not like having to sing and dance. Yeah, and Eric said that on the weekends, they can get up to 500, 600 people that come out here. You get 500 people up here? Good night. Where do they park? In the front yard. All right, well, that's good.
Starting point is 00:29:06 One person writes, Matt, I enjoyed watching the draft, but I will say ESPN has the worst broadcast in history. Truth. worst. Worst. I mean, I tried the Stephen A one. Way too much yelling.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Then I went to the Billis and Kendrick one. I don't think Kendrick Perkins had ever seen one of these dudes play before last night. He made the most generic comments like, well, you know he's 6-8, which means he's tall, like comments like that. At least Billis knew what was going on. Why can't they just get people who know who these players are? Was it Perkins who's made the Cooper flag comparison and said it's like, Anthony Davis and Kevin Garnett had a baby.
Starting point is 00:29:47 I think that was his addition. I watched the ESPN one for most of it. Yeah. I watched ESPN 95% of the night. I was around like pick 11 or 12. I switched to ABC and somebody had just been selected. And Stephen A was yelling so loud. I left it on for like 20 seconds.
Starting point is 00:30:03 It's like, well, I guess back to the other one. There's too much Stephen A. Too much Stephen A. Like I, you know, hopefully my ESPN people aren't listening, but there's too much Stephen A. Like they way too much. He's oversaturated. He doesn't know.
Starting point is 00:30:15 It's clear he didn't know anything about these guys either. Just give him a week off. It's okay. He does not need to yell all the time. They have the Warriors GM up there. Let him talk a little bit more. They put him on every single show, every single day. But who is that for?
Starting point is 00:30:30 Like, who is sitting there saying, I need Stephen A at this moment in the draft? Like, the draft is Stephen A. The draft is college basketball. You literally have people whose entire job is college basketball. basketball. Billis is good. The GM makes sense because he was a GM. Why do they have to have Stephen A?
Starting point is 00:30:51 I don't know. I'm hoping, at least with the NBA coverage, especially things like the finals, that we've seen the last of them, but I don't think that's going to be the case. Yeah. Well, otherwise, enjoy the night, and it'll be interesting to see where our guys go, end up going today. Some more college basketball news. This is kind of an oddly sports heavy.
Starting point is 00:31:11 The NCAA announced yesterday two things. Number one, they're going to 32 games starting next year, so not this year, but next year, which means basically one more game in the season. On paper, I mean, I love it. On paper, in theory, could allow you to play another good team. I kind of think most teams will just do another home game that makes them money. This is, I'm sure, a revenue play. I was talking to somebody yesterday privately who said by 2031, they think it'll go up to 35 games,
Starting point is 00:31:40 which I think I would like even more. but one more game? You're happy about that? I love it. Of course, you know, being a college basketball guy, I want more games. And I think Coach Pope just said that in the last couple weeks. He wants to go to 35, 36 games. He wanted to go to 40.
Starting point is 00:31:53 I don't think that's going to happen. But I think they'll probably add a game every two years until you get to 34 or 35. I hope Kentucky uses this. Like Pope says he was willing add a really good home-and-home. Yeah. Kansas. You know, we have Duke and Carolina in the ACC, SEC.
Starting point is 00:32:09 Hopefully we'll be getting them on the rotation. But maybe a U-Con. I'd like to get in a good traditional home and home going back and forth in a real college arena again. They're going to start, they're going to decide next week whether to expand the tournament. They're contemplating going to 76. So from 68 to 76, that would be eight more teams. I mean, it's not the end of the world, but I don't like it. I mean, I could be talked in to four more, get you to 72, because then Tuesday and Wednesday you could have four games,
Starting point is 00:32:41 so you could have games all day. So basically you'd get Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday of all games, basically six games. You start to add more than that. They're going to be playing at the same time. It's going to be, it's too many, and they don't need it, but they're probably going to do it. It's too many. I'll admit I'll enjoy a noon game on a Monday that I can gamble on, even though it's going to be Mississippi State versus Boston College or something.
Starting point is 00:33:07 But I just kind of hate how it used to matter making the tournament. now any team that's done anything is going to get the tournament. It used to be when you're judging a coach or how a season it went, it was a big deal just to be in the field of 64. It's gotten a little stale on that and just being in the field. The counter to that is I think if you're in a big conference and you don't make the tournament, now you're just going to get fired. Like you have no excuse now not to make the tournament
Starting point is 00:33:31 if you're in a big conference. Like you have to. Yeah. Whether we like it or not, the expansion's coming. I'd like going to 72 and doing all the games in Dayton It's making one week of games in Dayton. I think that would add a little more to... I wonder if they may still do that.
Starting point is 00:33:44 They may still do it. I don't know exactly how you would do it. I don't know if you can play six games in one day or whatever. But I still think if you're going to play all those games, Dayton is the way to do it. Because if you try to do it anywhere else, no one's going to go. So like if you... Already established there. In Dayton, it's kind of like Omaha in the College World Series.
Starting point is 00:34:03 Like, they'll come no matter who's playing. And you get a good atmosphere, even if it's Alabama-Stablish. State versus Long Island, you still get a good atmosphere because everybody comes. Sure, Dayton would love to expand. Dayton would take as many as they can. That might be an issue if you start adding too many of Dayton's able to host all of it, but I agree that it should say in Dayton as long as it can. If it goes to 76, will we ever miss the tournament? We shouldn't ever miss the tournament.
Starting point is 00:34:30 They go to 76 games. I mean, the reason I say that is, in 2013, if it was 76, we would have made the tournament. Now the COVID year, we probably still wouldn't have made the tournament. So that would have been a year we actually wouldn't have made it either way. But do you think, let's just throw it out there. Go to 76 teams. Do we miss the tournament in the next decade? We've only missed the tournament in the modern era like three times.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Right? We missed it the four times. We missed it the probation year. And then we missed it in the COVID year and in 2013. In 2013, it took an injury to one of the best players in the country. No, I think they'll make it every year. Honestly, if you can't make it at 76, whoever the coach is, I don't care if it's Mark Pope, just don't come back to your office.
Starting point is 00:35:20 Oh, really? If Kentucky cannot make a tournament with 76 teams, then yes. That's inexcusable. Wow. Mark Pope will not let Kentucky miss the tournament. He won't let it happen. Now, I'm assuming the NIL budget is still in good shape. We're kind of in the status we are now.
Starting point is 00:35:37 There's no reason Kentucky should not make a field of 76. One person writes, Matt, I'm officially offended at Ryan. You know, the guy called yesterday and said Shannon was his favorite person on the show. I've always argued Ryan was my favorite. He's now no longer my favorite. You're on the biggest show in the state. You have to watch the draft. No, I don't.
Starting point is 00:35:58 I don't. Yeah, you do. It wasn't one Kentucky guy got drafted first time in the first round. I'm going to say this with. Billy Gillespie. I'm going to say this with love. you needed to have watched the draft. What about to catch up the morning before the show
Starting point is 00:36:11 to see the viral moments? Easy. I asked Mario on the car here. Tell me who got drafted last night. I think he's going to get the show prep talk. You're going to get the show prep talk when this is over. You watch the draft. There are only a handful of moments that you have to watch. This is one of the things you have to do.
Starting point is 00:36:28 You have to watch the draft. That's a show prep thing. So even though I'm not angry about it, he is exactly right. You should watch the draft. That's part of this job. At least check in with it, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Sometimes I miss big events, but I will cram the morning after before the show. Shannon, should he watch the draft? Should have, yeah. Should have watched the draft. Who's up next? Joseph. Joseph. Go ahead, Joseph.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Hey, Matt. I appreciate you taking my call. Y'all were talking last week real fast. I have a football question, but y'all were talking last week about, like, Steve A. Smith talking about the crime in Memphis was real bad or whatever. Yes. You know, the highest murder rate in America is actually Cabot Cove, Maine. You know, the little town.
Starting point is 00:37:19 That's what murder she wrote. Yeah, they did have a lot of murders in that town for the population. And only one old woman to solve them. I think they said something like 2% of the population in a little town got murdered or something. Yeah, that is bad. So I had a football question. I haven't been able to call in a couple weeks. Just talk about Mark Stoops.
Starting point is 00:37:43 You know, with his buyout the way it is, I think we kind of have him whether we won it or not for the next, probably at least two or three years. Are you inclined to agree with that? Well, okay, so it kind of gets back to the Cal point, which is, yes, I do agree with you. you that on paper as a financial decision, there is not, if, if, if, if we win, no matter what happens, Mark Stoops as a financial decision almost has to come back.
Starting point is 00:38:17 But there is also the practical matter, which is, let's say we go four and eight, and you get that last home game, which isn't it against like Tennessee Tech or something, that last home game? Let's say you have the last home game and there are 6,000 people at the game. which is not crazy if the team has been a disaster. I don't know how this fan base would accept bringing him back. Now, there's the finance. This was the same thing, though, with Cal. Remember, we forget this.
Starting point is 00:38:50 They decided to bring Cal back. He ended up leaving, but they did decide to bring him back. So, you know, Joseph may be right. There may not be a financial way to make a separation when it's over, but there comes a point sometimes that things, can get so toxic, nobody really wants to be in them. So I'm hoping we don't get to this point. I'm hoping we don't have to have this conversation in November.
Starting point is 00:39:14 But a lot of things have worked with the schedule to where you can foresee it happening. That last home game, being against nobody, could be a disaster. And then Louisville in the final game, a Louisville team that might be good, that has Vince Mero on the sideline throwing L's up. Like that could be about as worse of option as you could get. Yeah, we all know Mitch is not quick to fire anyone. And I think Mitch won't want to fire a mark at all. But if you get to a point where you're not making any money,
Starting point is 00:39:46 there's a number there where you just got to eat the buyout because you've got to get some revenue and some excitement back. If games like Tennessee Tech at home are not making you anything, and you're still losing, could be losing more than you would have lost just paying them to break up. Yeah. Hey, nothing says summer like long days, clutch plays, and the firing off of a few bets for the game.
Starting point is 00:40:03 You know, it's hot outside. Look at these folks sitting in the sun. You guys are very nice. I'm impressed. How about the llama? And the poor llama. The camel? But you know what?

Starting point is 00:43:28 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin. and Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall.
Starting point is 00:43:51 And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court, licking his fingers why he gets. got the ball like you go through a training camp with that I said you figure it out real quick get your ass up and down the court and you're going to get the ball so listen to point game on the iHeart radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts welcome back it is kentucky sports
Starting point is 00:44:24 radio 859 28027 give us a shout uh we missed the tournament more than i realized what are some other years we missed three straight years we missed uh the year we were on probation then patino's first two years or the year before we went on probation, then the two years of probation. So we missed 89, 90, and 91. And then I forgot we missed Billy's second year. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:47 But we would have made it that year, too, if it was 76. So that's also an interesting thing. If it went to 76, would Billy Gillespie have still been the coach? Would he still be here now? No, he'd have lost it before then. But that is an interesting question. If Billy makes the tournament that year, how do you fire it?
Starting point is 00:45:03 Maybe he gets another year. Yep. You know. That's why this stinks. There'll be a lot of coaches in that situation where they need to go, but they made the field so they'll get to stick around. Yeah, 859-280-2287. Couple open lines.
Starting point is 00:45:15 I got to talk about, to me, the weirdest piece of news. Connor Joe, who is not a good baseball player, but is on the Reds. He, you know, he does some things that are okay, but he's not very good at the baseball. But he was put on the injured list yesterday, and usually they'll put on the injured list. They'll be like, stranger groin. pulled your hamstring, whatever. Sometimes you'll see injured list illness, which, you know, is probably like they're just sick, and so they need some time.
Starting point is 00:45:46 The Reds put it out and said, Conor Joe, 15-day disabled list, hand, foot, and mouth disease. First of all, I didn't know that was a thing. I mean, I've heard of it, but I thought that was something you got in like, if you visited like the Philippines or something, and you had to get. like a shot for it. Like I didn't know that was a thing you just got. Apparently children get it.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Had no idea. Maybe going to a daycare, not the Philippines. I didn't know that. Secondly, I didn't know that if you got it, like it's worse when adults get it. And then I saw pictures of it.
Starting point is 00:46:27 It looks awful. My thought was this. A, didn't realize the prevalence of hand, foot, and mouth disease. B, I don't feel like the Reds needed to call him out like that. Because it went viral. Everybody was like, what is this?
Starting point is 00:46:43 The organ trail? Hand, foot, mouth disease. And so now everybody knows Connor Joe has. From what I read of hand, foot, mouth, it gets on your hands. Big rash. Your foot, inside your throat. And sometimes, and this is gross, but this is what I read, like, the crevice on your backside. I don't need to know that about Connor Joe.
Starting point is 00:47:03 I don't need to know that he may have, like, butt pimples. And so I feel bad for him that they had to release that level of detail. I'm not an expert, but maybe illness would have been fine. Connor Joe out illness and everyone has just moved on with their lives. He's not a good enough player. But from now on, every time he comes to bat, I'm going to be like, oh, there's old hand, foot, and mouth guy. Now when he comes back, everyone's going to be afraid to touch his hand or his foot or his mouth. Like if it was Ellie Dale Cruz, he's so good, we'd forget.
Starting point is 00:47:33 But from now on, Shannon, Connor Joe is handfoot and mouth. disease guy. That's his legacy. From now on. That's his legacy. And I think the Reds did him wrong. I'm going to be honest with it. I think they did him wrong, too. I've heard of it, but I don't know one person who's ever had it. But now can you imagine in the locker room? He comes walking in the locker room. It's going to be like the Red Sea part and
Starting point is 00:47:50 nobody wants to get around him. Oh, yeah. They could have said, you know, he has a sore throat. He's going to be out for a few days. Yeah. There may be one of the three. He has hand disease. All of it. I don't know if it would say. Yeah. That's true. Hand disease would be weird.
Starting point is 00:48:04 Also, if you said mouth disease. I wouldn't want to be on there for mouth disease. Maybe foot disease. How long does one out when they get hands? I know people have had it. It was not a pleasant experience. What happens? And they got it from kids.
Starting point is 00:48:19 I feel like you have to go play with building blocks at a daycareer to get it. I assume Connor Joe has kids. I had somebody tell me like you can get literally like itchy sores inside your throat. I've heard that it is an absolutely miserable experience. Anybody here, you ever had it? You're a pediatrician. Oh, there we go. We have an expert.
Starting point is 00:48:40 You had two cases yesterday. Was it Connor Joe? So it's spreading. Well, I didn't know anything about it. So I tweeted out something like, that's crazy. And then the text machine all night was just people telling me about their hand, foot, and mouth disease. Which, you know, I was fine to, but I felt like I was experiencing with people. It is much more prevalent than I realized.
Starting point is 00:49:03 You just said you saw a pediatrician. And apparently if adults get it, it is absolutely awful, Ryan. Is it something that's like spreading now? Like we all need to be worried about it? Is it spreading? It's found throughout the year. Some are more often because everybody's like sweating and saliva on each other. Well, I just, you know, I've seen a lot of injury reports over the years.
Starting point is 00:49:27 I've never seen that level of detail. I mean, it would be like if they said, you know, Tyler Stevenson out crabs or something. It's like there's a level of this. That's embarrassing too. Especially now you get the social media graphics where they use the biggest font they can fit. So it'll just say crabs or hand, foot, mouth. We don't need the level of detail. If I was Connor Joe, I cannot believe Major League Baseball does not require that level of detail.
Starting point is 00:49:57 I would be so angry at the Reds for putting that out that I would be livid. Illness. It's very simple. No one needs to know. Everybody's good with it. You can stay home with illness. We won't ask questions. Well, he just left the pediatrician, but I was going to ask him, do someone wrote me that many kids get it.
Starting point is 00:50:15 Like, that kids get it all the time, that, like, you're lucky if your kid doesn't get it. You all are shaking your head. So I didn't, I had no idea. So at least they taught me that. My kids never got it. Maybe it's a Cincinnati thing then. Maybe it's going around in the Cincinnati area. Well, I, that's a level of detail I didn't need.
Starting point is 00:50:33 But good luck to Conor Joe. I hope it gets better. Yeah, prayers. It's a serious thing. prayers. If you want to be grossed out, no. Google like people's hands and stuff that have it. No, I mean, you've seen it.
