Those people are starving for banter.

And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:22 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Listen to The Clifferts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Why are we all so obsessed with romance? Comedy of Broadway opened in Dallas. downtown Lexington in 1987, and they're still bringing the best in stand-up comedy to the area 38 years later.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Call 859-271 joke or visit Comedyoff Broadway.com. We're Mattless, we're Drewless, and we're Shannonless, Billy. So it's just the two of us, and so we've got some special guests lined up for today. A little bullpen game, huh? It is a bullpen game. It's a good way to put it. As always, every episode of Kentucky Sports Radio sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office called DJ. What happens, Billy?
Starting point is 00:03:01 He'll make him pay. He'll make them pay. We'll have our Whiskey Feefe call today. The Aviation Glass Text Machine is off with Matt, but if you've got my cell phone number, we'll use that as the Aviation Glass Text Machine today. Matt's doing a travel day. We're using another baseball analogy.
Starting point is 00:03:14 It's a travel day. Bill Pinn Gang, he's got a travel day. Drew and Shannon are both on vacation. Drew's in Denver. Shannon is down in his second home away from home, Panama City Beach. So we had to figure out a way to feel, make the show kind of entertaining today, Billy.
Starting point is 00:03:28 So back him up with a good idea to have a different guest. every 30 minutes. Kind of, you know, refresh the show, hit the refresh button every 30 minutes. We've got four special guests lined up to come in and join me at KS Bar. I'm actually on the patio at KS Bar and Grill this morning. Well, I hope you have your journalism hat on or I hope you're going to ask some tough questions today. Who's our first guess, right?
Starting point is 00:03:50 Well, you know, the big story of the summer coming up in a couple weeks is going to be the TBT tournament again. So Sean Woods is the new head coach of the TBT team. So we're going to get him in. And he, actually, Sean, got two new jobs this summer. We've got to talk to him about both of the new jobs he accepted. But he is the coach of TBT. So we're going to start off talking about him talking basketball. Second half hour, we're going to switch to football.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And we've got former UK player, Cisco Bryant, whose son is Ty Bryant. He'll be one of the leaders of the defense, maybe the leader of the defense this year at UK. So we'll have football in the second hour. And then the third hour, we've got an NFL player, a guy currently playing in the NFL. We had him on the show last year. Devin Key, he's going to come and sit, join with us with the Denver Broncos. And then, Billy, I'm really excited about the last 30 minutes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Rob Bromley, legend. Rob Bromley, WKYT's retired sports anchor. It's going to come in. We could do, I could do two hours with Rob easy. We're going to do it in 30 minutes, and he'll be our cleanup here then today. How you like the lineup? Okay, I like it a lot. It's got a lot of potential, Ryan.
Starting point is 00:04:56 So let's do it. Because, like, face it, this time of year, Matt talked about it yesterday. You've talked about it on the pre-show. There's nothing going on. I mean, it's kind of blank stairs. But with the TBT tournament coming up, you know, tickets are going to go and sell. And it's a big deal.
Starting point is 00:05:10 This way they do it to get people to go because if you win, you get a host in the, well, I guess they call it the regional the following weekend. Right. I mean, I'm hoping the cats can win and meet Louisville again, even though I know if those two teams met, it would be at Freedom Hall. As long as Drew doesn't get sucker punched, you know, and nobody gets spit on, I'm really looking forward to that matchup again. Well, I believe the roster is all finalized.
Starting point is 00:05:33 I don't think they've been having any practice yet, so why Sean he comes in here right now and talk about it a little bit. Outside of that, Billy, there is really not a whole lot going on. And then Matt, other than Matt, complaining about the Reds every year, and he comes on, every day when he comes on. What's up, brother? Sean Woods is getting ready to join us now. Sean Woods, number 11 from the University of Kentucky Wildcats,
Starting point is 00:05:51 unforgettable, but you're no longer a former player. You're an old man coach. You're a coach now, and you picked up two new jobs. this and not one, two new jobs this summer? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, did, did, did, did. Well, I want to talk about the TBT job first, obviously, because that's coming up, man. That's like you guys playing like what?
Starting point is 00:06:13 Two weeks. Two weeks you're playing. Two weeks, a week from Friday. So about two and a half weeks, 17 day? That's right, July 18th, I think the day you guys play. Have you had any kind of practices or have you seen your team in action yet? No, we have. The guys don't report until,
Starting point is 00:06:30 the 11th. We got that, we have a big time, 20, 20 Beckham, who's done a great job. I think he needs to be in the NBA front office for somebody. But we have an extravaganza weekend, weekend of champions where former players come back and, you know, giving away backpacks and things like that for starting up school. And then on Saturday there's an all-star game. We're former players, especially locally. We'll be playing in it. And then the guys report on Sunday,
Starting point is 00:07:02 we're our first meeting, then we kick it off as far as practice starts on Monday. So the roster's set, though, right? Yeah. Is it right? Yeah. And Willie's back. Willie's back.
Starting point is 00:07:11 The Harrison Twins are back. The Harrison Twins are back. You had an Anthony Almanor from this past UK team. He's playing with you guys too, right? How about that, huh? How about that? You got DeAndre Liggins is playing? We got Willie Colley Stein, Archie Goodwin, who's one of the top five players in the TBT last year.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Yeah. We got the Aaron, I mean, the Harrison Twins, of course, Khalil Whitney. Forgot about Khalil Whitney. He committed to play. And then we got, you know, DeAndre Liggins, who's a monster. Yeah. We got DeRan Lamb, and we got Karam Cantor coming back. He was, Enis Cantor's brother, who was the MVP of the league last year.
Starting point is 00:07:50 He was, you needed him because he's like a big, big butt. big brawler guy in the middle. He's a guy that you can go to the well and go get a bucket. Yeah, yeah. And then we also got DJ Burns, who played at Murray State and also played for me at Southern, who led the country in offensive rebound. So we've got some, we got a pretty decent team, man. You feel pretty good about it when you look at the roster?
Starting point is 00:08:13 Does it make you excited as a coach? I don't know about it. I think we're deeper. I think we've got more guys that are going to come in in shape that, been playing. Yeah. And I think we got some guys that, you know, last year was an experience for us. And Twyny did a great job.
Starting point is 00:08:34 And also Tyler did a great job of just collaborating and getting all these guys together. But what really gets you is the pride of Kentucky. Once these guys come back and they see that crowd and they see that, man, these people still remember us and cheer for us and things like that. Because those guys last year didn't know how relevant they are. Right. because, you know, they only were here for eight months, and then they hadn't been back since. And to come back and only play at a university for a year
Starting point is 00:09:02 and still get that type of, you know, gratification and that love, it was an eye-opener for them. And I told them, you know, I know we're just, you know, this is a little deal. We're playing for a million dollars, but it's bigger than that. You know, this is still, whenever you put blue and white on and you're playing around, you're playing in the Commonwealth, It's like playing again when you're in school.
Starting point is 00:09:24 And you never be more relevant than you are at the University of Kentucky. I don't care where you play professionally yet. You know, I told Tyler, I said Phoenix Suns don't remember you. I told Willie Collis-Stein, the Sacramento Kings don't remember you, you know, but you're always going to be relevant for the rest of your life here at the University of Kentucky. So why not whenever you have a chance to represent this, give it your all like you used to? I think that's why it was such a success last summer. Exactly what you said.
Starting point is 00:09:49 These guys came back. felt the pride of putting that Kentucky jersey on, and the fans loved them in the Kentucky jersey when they went to the games. No doubt about it. And they witnessed that. And then after the first game, I told them, I said, hey, man, we're going to stand out here, and we're going to sign every autograph until everybody leaves.
Starting point is 00:10:05 And that's when it started to get back in their souls. Man, we are back at Kentucky. Man, I didn't know it was really, really like this. Because when those guys came here, they didn't have the University of Kentucky basketball tradition on their mind. They had this, they came in as a stepping stone. This is where I needed to go, play for Cal because he's going to give me an opportunity to play in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Yeah. It wasn't about the sole impact of what they were giving people in the Commonwealth. It wasn't. And as a young kid, and that's not going through your souls, not being taught every day, they didn't get that. Right. They didn't. They didn't.
Starting point is 00:10:42 They were trying to. Oh, my gosh. You know what I'm saying? And it was very surprising, but it was eye-opening to me that not only is this a new generation, okay, but when we came here and everybody up until then came here, it was about playing for Kentucky. I got an opportunity to play for Kentucky. Now, as you see, it's turned in full circle, even though these kids are transferring in, every last one of these kids didn't get recruited by Kentucky, but they wanted to. That's true. Now that they have an opportunity to play
Starting point is 00:11:11 for Kentucky after going someplace else, it's like, wow, I get my opportunity to play at Kentucky. You understand what I'm saying? Yeah, oh yeah. But they're not. freshman, they're already seasoned as college athletes and college basketball players. They're better. They have more experience. But, man, there's still a pride about, wow, I'm playing at Kentucky now. You know what I'm saying? These guys didn't even recruit me coming out of high school.
Starting point is 00:11:36 But, man, now I get a chance to play at Kentucky? Oh, my goodness, it's twofold now. And we're getting some guys that, you know, that are humbled enough to be so excited to put that uniform on and now they're searching for the pride and the history and things like that and you can't beat it in this day society because of transferring and n i.m there's no pride nowhere but the only place that you can get that pride from is right here yeah i think that's probably why willie the harrison twins wanted to come back and play again this year no doubt about it i mean willie wants to move here now you know because he you know he but willie for the most
Starting point is 00:12:13 part spent more time here than most of those guys he did three years remember that's true So he has more time and more experience living here, becoming more appreciative of who he was as a University of Kentucky athlete, more so than those other guys. And that plays a difference. Now, the last year the games were at Rupp, moving the games in Memorial Coliseum this year. And if I'm not mistaken, there's four games on Friday the 18th. And I think you guys may play the last one, the last game. So there's eight teams in this region. You feel pretty good about getting out of the region and maybe enough people come, buy the tickets.
Starting point is 00:12:51 We can host the regional then after that? Well, I think so. You know what I mean? The good thing is we do have home court advantage. You never know because we don't know the other rosters just yet of the other teams. When do that have to be turned in? It doesn't have to be turned in for a little bit. You know, it's hard to do a scourrily.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Why are you smiling? You got other guys added to your roster, you think? Oh, we may have one more. Really? We may have one more. Really? We may have one more. So telling you what, man, 20 Beckham is the best.
Starting point is 00:13:19 And I'm not saying this just because we're working together right now. 20 Beckham is a really smart individual. And I think he really would be good in the NBA and the front office for somebody. That's how much I think of this young man. Well, everybody that was here last year, they said the reason they were here was because of 20. 20 convinced me that I would have fun. We'd get a good competitive team because you don't want to come down here and not have you have a competitive group of guys. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:13:44 But even the roster, you just laid out. out, do you kind of know in your mind who you're starting five is probably going to be already? It's kind of tough, but you know what? I'll tell you this. I got a bunch of toys in this Christmas time, and I'm going to play with every last one of them. I promise you that. Throw them out there and see how they do. To the battery runs, though.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Not to think that the batteries don't last very long in these guys. You know, you guys are getting a little older now. Exactly. So, you know, last year when Nate Sistina left, that was a big blow. Yeah. Because not only was he the best player on our team, he was the best locker room guy. He was everything for us. And when he left, it kind of killed the morale going out to Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Yeah. Who's your locker room guy this year out of your roster, you think? Who's that guy? I don't know yet. I don't know. I have no idea. You know what I'm going to say, because you've got to remember now, besides the guys that I coached last year, have coached last year, I don't know these guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:34 These guys are a lot younger than me. That's true. But that's the gratification that I'm getting because I get to meet these young guys and I get to hear their stories of their experience at the University of Kentucky for the little time that they were here. here and they get to hear mine, you know what I mean? It's hard to say and it's hard for me to swallow, but I am an older statesman now compared to these guys. You're a grandpa for these guys. So my history is enough to where it could capture their attention. And not only that, show my appreciation for those guys also. Yeah. He is Sean Woods. He's going to be here for another second. We've got to talk about your second job that you took this summer. You took not just one coaching job. You took
Starting point is 00:15:12 two coaching jobs since you were last with us. So if you got a call, Give us a call, 859-2-802-287. That's Clark's Pump and Shop phone number, 859-2-8-8-7. We're right back with Sean Woods. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending,
Starting point is 00:15:27 opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Starting point is 00:16:18 Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search learn the hard way and listen now. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:17:15 This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:17:33 Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, miss. Parker. Listen to the Cliffer Show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:17:53 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
Starting point is 00:18:14 We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night bases on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:18:34 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball, like, You go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Just in time for the 4th of July, Red State Barbecue wants to remind all the places you can pick up Red State products. The Kentucky Proud section of Liquor, Select Meyer locations, and, of course, Kroger. Critchfield on Southland, the Kentucky Horse Park, Jingle Gems and Jungle Gems in Cincinnati and Fairfield. Publix in Louisville and now Publix in Lexington. And as always, you can visit Red StateBBBBQ.com. And click on shop. That's Red StateBBBQ.com. Click on shop.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Use the promo code KSR 20, KSR 20, and get 20% off your order from Red State Barbecue. They've been a good part of us for a long time. All right. Welcome back. Ryan Lemon here on the patio of KS Bar and Grill because we've got a kind of a carousel of special guest, Sean. You're the lead-off hitter. You're the first one. Sean Woods is here.
Starting point is 00:19:42 We talked that whole first second. about your new job being the TBT coach, which I can't believe you guys don't even start practicing until the 11th. And then you play one week later on the 18th. I guess you can have three practices a day, though, if you want to. Oh, yeah. We're going to get after it. I'll probably see that. So your other job you picked up this summer, you were named the head basketball coach at Scott County High School.
Starting point is 00:20:01 So I've really not seen you since then. Congratulations. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. You know, Billy Hicks was a living legend out there at Scott County. Every time I got Scott County High School basketball, I'd think of Billy Hicks. No doubt about it. did a great job, you know, is one of the top coaches in all of Kentucky High School basketball
Starting point is 00:20:18 and created a tradition and an aura of, you know, at Scott County that's unpeckable, especially in the state. I mean, you know, when you speak of Kentucky High School basketball, you got to put Scott County in the mix. There's no doubt. And he created that. And, you know, I got some shoes to, you know, some pictures. choose to feel but I'm looking forward to it because you always as a coach want to go somewhere
Starting point is 00:20:46 where basketball is important and you got backing you got support it's hard to go to a place where and be successful at a place that nobody really cares uh and turn that deal around so I'm stepping into a great situation I'm looking excited you know I'm looking forward to it you know they haven't you know been as successful they have been the last three four years but uh you know the buzz is out and the excitement started, and I'm looking forward to it. You're right. Scott County, they're in the late 90s, early 2000 run. They were in the state finals every year, won the state championship.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Last couple of years, it hasn't been quite what Scott County basketball expects. So I guess that's a big part of what you're trying to do, bring that love and tradition back to the fan base of Scott County basketball. Well, Scott County is Scott County. You know what I mean? And that's the history of Scott County. You know, they got a new school, which we all know, Great Crossing, who had a, a generational talent in Malachi Marino, you know, who it was kind of weird how it happened. You know, Coach Hicks retired.
Starting point is 00:21:48 The coach there now was the middle school coach who had those kids. And it was almost like a natural feeder to him because he had the relationship with those kids growing up. And they all went with him to Great Crossing. And he did a great job at Great Crossing really taking advantage of the talent that he had, especially with Malacow Marino. And when you have a seven-footer like that, who doesn't want to be involved and join that type of team? Because you know he's going to get recruited by everybody in the country.
Starting point is 00:22:18 So if he's getting recruited by everybody in the country, shoot, I just want his leftovers from the colleges that he was not going to consider that come look at me. So it was timing big time. Well, best of luck to you over in Scott County as well as TBT, but before you go out, we've got to talk to UK. I mean, you did some basketball pregame shows with us. You know, you were still kind of involved watching the team. And what was the one thing you left most impressed about what happened last year?
Starting point is 00:22:40 Mark Pope's first year at UK. He solidified what Kentucky basketball is all about. He made Kentucky basketball fun for the Commonwealth again. He gave our team back to the Commonwealth. And that's what has made Kentucky what Kentucky is. You know, you can't go away from the Commonwealth being at the University of Kentucky. This is the Commonwealth's team. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:04 This is what makes it Kentucky, unlike any other place in America. And he brought that back. Not only that, you know, his first year, you know, no matter if you're a former player or not, no matter how good you are, you're still nervous. Because you're coming into the best place in all of college sports to be the head, even though you were a player here. You know, and you've been to BYU, you've been to Utah Valley, but this is Kentucky. Yeah. And I thought he learned on the fly, and he made adjustments on the fly. fly and I thought he maximize that team as much as he could given the circumstances.
Starting point is 00:23:42 I thought they were pretty good. I thought he had solid guys. I thought he had solid personnel guys. And you got to have that. I thought he had the right chemistry at the right time for his first year. You know, he didn't have any prima donnas. He had guys that were hungry and excited and really appreciative of putting that uniform on. And I thought he got everything out of them.
Starting point is 00:24:04 I think he learned now that you've got to teach defense, you know. And I think that's what he went and did this year. He got some guys not only that can run his system and shoot the basketball. He got some tough guys that are defensive-minded that came from tough teams that defense was a fixture of their deal. And now, you know, I went over there one day last week, and it was a different type of aura. Really? It was a toughness aura. Really?
Starting point is 00:24:32 I thought last year was really just good old guy. won't shoot the basketball, you know, 75% of your practices are really just shooting offense. And he really hangs his hat on, you know, their offensive system. But he realized this is the SEC and it's a grinding conference. And if you don't play defense, I don't care how much, how many points you score. Because you know, at the beginning, they were scoring a lot of points. But once they got into the deep, the thick of things in the SEC, those 90-point games were not that. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:25:01 It came down to defensive possession, things like that. So he made sure that that wasn't going to be the case this year. He's playing defense more this year. Part of his summer this year is really implementing toughness on defense, how you play defense. They worked on that a lot, and that's who I am. So that's very, very refreshing to me to see these guys really, really getting after from a physical standpoint. And you've got some competitors.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Last year, everybody wanted to be friends with each other. This year, this is getting pretty chippy. It's a competitive situation. Already. It's competitive. And these guys want to play. and he brought in some dudes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:34 And he brought us some competitive dudes. So, you know, and the biggest thing, and God works in mysterious ways, always is going to be a 12-year pro, I think. I really do think that. 12-year pro. I think he's going to, I think because of who he is, his work ethic, I think he's a great locker room guy, and he's going to be like a Keith Bogan type of kid that can just last in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:25:57 Because his shot's going to get better. But I think he's got all the other intangibles from as far as winning. He's tough. He defends. He'll offense and rebound. He'll guard the other teams as tough as best player. And once he gets making that open jump shot, because in the NBA, you ain't got to break down no more. You know, you got to be good at one or two things.
Starting point is 00:26:15 He's never going to be the guy out there dancing with it, creating for others. He's going to be the guy who's sitting there waking on the shot and then guarding the other team's best player. He's going to be the modern day Bruce Bowen. Remember Bruce Bowen used to play for the San Antonio Spurs? That's who I see. That's Otega. That's Otega. The one, we've got to get a couple minutes, but fans are, you know, we're crazy anyway.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Is this a roster that most fans believe can get to the Final Four? If he can get to the Sweet 16 throughout injuries last year. Yeah. Okay. And if they can shoot the ball 75% just as good as they did last year, I think they can, this team has the making to get to a Final Four, simply because I think they'll be tougher defensively, okay, which they can match the Houston's and the St. John's and the people like that, you know, at that level, that upper echeline level to the Connecticut's, I think we'll be able to compete with them from
Starting point is 00:27:10 a physical and defensive standpoint. I think his offense is going to take care of itself, and I think he's got a point guard that's a really good playmaker that doesn't. He's got to be good, right? Low has to be good. I mean, I know Lowe's dad. I've been knowing Lowe since he's a little bitty kid because they come from the John Lucas tree in Houston. if Lowe can sustain and be the guy that we want him to be. He's got to be tougher though defensively. Okay, there's questions about him. But if he can be that guy, the straw that stirs the coffee with what he brings,
Starting point is 00:27:43 he's a pick-and-roll jewel, if he can stay healthy and stay tough and match everybody's intensity from a defensive standpoint, Kentucky is a player and has the potential just as much as anybody else to get to the final four that's what we need to hear that's exactly what we need to hear Sean Woods man best of luck to you next the next couple weeks with the TBT team and best luck next year it's Scott County man thanks for coming out appreciate you buddy Sean Woods number 11 Kentucky Wildcat I'm forget it we're right back special guest number two is here we're gonna bring him on we come back right to this break I recognize that voice Billy that's our boy it's our guy Shannon the dude Alice Blueground this is the new song this is bent correct that's correct
Starting point is 00:28:25 you know it sounds pretty good you know we we hate to brag on him much Billy because then his head gets so big but they're actually really really good yeah I'm really proud of them and I really like this song too so he keep it up Alice Lou Gehne I'm telling you when they had that concert down at the Virginia in Somerset something about the acoustics and the sound system and everything in that place was awesome I told him I said dude you guys have never sounded as good as you did tonight so so I hope they're enjoying their vacation down at panel we should probably call Shannon today just see if he think you'd answer and join us let's let's try it one segment all right well
Starting point is 00:29:01 Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan and Billy here. We are live on the patio at KS Bar and Grill. Kind of got a rotation of special guests come in. We had Sean Woods the first segment talking basketball. Now we're going to talk some football with Cisco Bryant, Cisco former Kentucky Wildcat, father of Thai Bryant, current Kentucky Wildcat. But we talked during the break.
Starting point is 00:29:21 We're all three have Indiana ties. Very much so. Yeah. Sean grew up in Indianapolis. I grew up around Jasper and Otwell, Indiana. And your family is from Indianapolis. They're from NAP, yes. On the Naptown, that's right.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Call it NAP. But you actually went to high school in Bowling Green. Yeah, Bolingier High. I'm Bowling High Purple. Well, you know, I've got on to you before because Bowling Green has had to play Frederick Douglas. When your kid is on Frederick Douglas and you're kind of torn in the middle. I'm not torn. Who am I going to be with, Frederick Douglas or the Bowling Green Purple's?
Starting point is 00:29:47 I wasn't torn when they played in the state title. Blood is sticking in water. Yeah, yeah. So I was all Frederick Douglass. Well, I saw you before the game. I'm like, where are you sitting at? Who are you going to sit on today? Because I've seen you at Bowling Green Games.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Yes. And you're all bowling green, 100% the purples. And Lester Puan is a family member, I'm a purple. And what it is is real quickly. First point, thanks for inviting me, Lemon. This is your first time on the show. First time because I might, I'm my, you know, D. Key, who gets invited all the time, you know, your boy. You know, he just retired yesterday.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Yes, I know. I heard that. Dante Key retired yesterday, so Lord help us. I can't get him out of my pool. He'll be in my pool every day. I don't blame him. He deserved it. He deserved it.
Starting point is 00:30:30 He deserved it. He deserved it. But, yeah, so first time I've been on the show, and again, thank you for the invite. When Bowling Green, real quick back to that, when Bowling Green plays anyone because Bowling Green administrators, coaches make formal players feel welcome. That's why I love Bowling Green. I say that to people. Let me show up or let anyone that's part of the program in the 70s, 80s, 2000 open arms.
Starting point is 00:31:00 They make you feel proud to be a purple. When did you graduate Bowling Green? 82. 82. So you were Kentucky from 83 to 87? Yes. 83 to 87. So you play your entire career for Coach Claiborne.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Coach Jerry Claiborne was his first class that actually went 010 and 1. That would be tough. Oh, 10 and 1. Then the next year we came right back and end up losing in the Hall of Fame Bowl to West Virginia. On a very cold day, and then the next day it was 80 degrees. You know, Freddie Maggard talks a lot about Jerry Claverin and like he became a father figure to you guys. I mean, his players loved playing for him. They loved that man.
Starting point is 00:31:42 Well, let me phrase it the best way you can when you're 17, 18, 19, 20. He got on our nerves. Okay. Okay. But once you realized and you got older, you realized that he was teaching you for not for 17, 18, 19, 20. He was teaching you for being a man. 21 on the whatever age that God blesses you to end up with. So let's talk about UK football.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Please. I want you to talk as a former player and a fan first. We'll talk to you out as about a dad here in the minute. Okay. But as a former player and a fan goes to the games, what you think, what was the problem last year? Well, as I looked at as a fan and having my tickets and I'm sitting, and I've been there before my son got there to go back to dad real quick, it was like, was like pleasing as a as a as a fan and a coach and it looked like they were trying to do this
Starting point is 00:32:37 that and that and there was no identity and i mean that not negative toward anybody but as a as a big time football program you got to have an identity now all the receivers that Alabama not doing a comparison but all the receivers that Alabama got had in the NFL they were running team there was no doubt. They don't run the football. They had some guys that could do it. And I just thought that that was different. And I thought that a lot of times it didn't jail together as a unit. Because if you play for the name in front and you are stud, you're going to get accolades. There's no question about it from my mind. And I looked at it from that perspective because we had some guys back in the 80s. I mean, you had a backfield with George Adams.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Mark Higgs, Mark Logan, average old hunter. All NFL guys. All NFL, all at the same time. So why did it all get along? Because everybody understood their role. And you can't get four studs like that. Then you had myself as a receiver, Joker Phillips as a receiver,
Starting point is 00:33:46 corner of Burbage as a receiver. You know, Oliver White as a tied-in. I mean, and Eric Pitts, also as a receiver. You just have to jail and you've got to realize we're all good and we're all going to get paid sooner or later. Do you agree or disagree with the thought that a lot of people feel like the culture slipped a little bit in the locker room and the program and maybe that's led to a lot of the issues on the field? Yeah, actually, that's a great question. It's actually a yes and no question. I thought culture sometimes players has got to make it.
Starting point is 00:34:23 They got to make it happen. Yeah. You know, people look at coaches. and I say that biasedly because I'm a coach. But players make plays. Players make plays. There's not one coach that I've ever known in my life that said, I'm going to call this play because I know it ain't going to work.
Starting point is 00:34:39 Every play that you call, you think it's going to work. So with that said, I just think that right there was the biggest thing is yes and no in situations. I don't think it happened like all the time one way or the other. It just is sometimes it would happen in situations. and their culture is like Alabama. I keep going to Alabama because we're very familiar with their success. Alabama to me is they get down to it what is the biggest thing that Nick Sabin used to do. He will Nick Saban his offensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:35:12 He will Nick Sabo him. He'll go over and yell at him. Yeah, right. We'll run in the ball. I think sometimes you have to say this is our culture, this is what we're going to do, and we'll go from him. Yeah. Do you think with the roster that's... Like I think Phil still just predicted Kentucky to finish 15th out of the 16th
Starting point is 00:35:30 SEC team. I disagree. So do you feel like there's more talent on this team and the roster is better than we're giving them credit for? I do. And I said this on a previous show. I said when I go and I watch their practices, and I've been to quite a bit before they have their break, it was nice.
Starting point is 00:35:51 It was yes, sir, no, sir. This is just this year. This year. Gotcha. It was amazing. It wasn't any negative emotion going on, you know, because, you know, I'm going around and they allow me. I say that I appreciate that coach, too.
Starting point is 00:36:09 And I'm walking around, but I ain't saying nothing. I'm just taking all in. And I just saw a lot of hustle, a lot of full speed. Not, I didn't see Holly, I didn't see anyone second guessing the coach, second guessing. what it was called offensive, defensively, or special team. And I think that's football, winning football, I should say. How is the Vince Merrill departure going to affect the team? You know, again, second great question, let me.
Starting point is 00:36:42 That's why you get paid to big bucks. Well, yeah, they're really big bucks. It's why I'm door dashing in the evening sometimes. You'll make some money. But I think that's a little different. I think people took it the wrong way. to me. There's a big difference if your OC been here 12 or 13 years and he leaves, or your DC being here 12 to 13 years and he leaves. I think keeping that in core is not as big
Starting point is 00:37:09 as Vince Lee. Vince leaving is a big deal, but it doesn't truly affect their offense or defense or special team because he wasn't a coordinator. And to me, people got to look at that. That makes the big difference. If White would have left, that would have been a problem. Because now you've got to learn a whole new system. Now you've got to learn a whole new scheme. Which is kind of what the offense went through. They had Liam Cohen, you know, they had some different offensive coordinator three or four years in a row, it seemed like.
Starting point is 00:37:38 Yeah, you can't be successful unless you have a success system. Or you have somebody that's coming up behind you that's running your system. And that helped. Like, I'm a 49er fan. 49ers' defense has been awesome. Because when the one defensive coordinator left, the next one was the linebacker coach. Okay, yeah, and he's with the, we got far from the JIS.
Starting point is 00:38:01 The other one is with Texas, Texan, excuse me. And what that said is this past year has been tough because he was an outsider coming in, running the defense. So going back to the Vince statement, it does affect because I'm going to miss seeing him, great guy, fantastic person, but it doesn't affect as much on the field based on offense, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:21 offense and defense coordinators. Were you surprised? I was shocked. I was shocked. I was shocked. The timing of it was kind of odd to me. Timing was very odd. And the timing could have a little bit adding on to your question.
Starting point is 00:38:34 I mean, the timing could have been worse for the kids who are embedded into him. Yes. Who loves him. Yes. I think that's what bothered me because, you know, you bring a kid here and you set in the parents' family. I've done that. I had that done. And all of a sudden, the person that brought you there is not there.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Yeah. Makes a difference. It does make a difference. Yeah. All right, we're going to take our break. When we come back, we're going to talk to you about. Now you can put your dad hat on. You had your former player hat on.
Starting point is 00:39:03 You already got a hat. It's got number 14 on it. 14. Ty Bryant's your son. We're going to talk about that. If you've got a question about UK football, we'll open up to you the Clark's Publishoutem Shop phone number, 859,000, 280-287. Ryan Lehman and Lime and Billy Relage with Cisco Bryant. We come back.

Starting point is 00:40:32 still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.

Starting point is 00:41:43 Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. and finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
Starting point is 00:42:03 And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall.
Starting point is 00:42:20 And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's first, friends stop by like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Ryan Lim and Billy Relage here at Kentucky Sports Radio. We are live on the patio at KS Bar and Grill today. Kind of got some every 30 minutes.
Starting point is 00:44:04 We'll have a new guest. And we've got Cisco Brian here now, former Kentucky Wildcat football. We're going to let you put your dad hat on. You've got a number 14 hat on right now, the Thai-Bryan hat. I mean, how cool is it to watch your kid play for the team you played for? And not just play, play very, very well. Thank you. Well, I appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:44:24 It's surreal. It really is. And I'm, I think the biggest part before he did as his freshman year, he came in, and he got on the field, and I sat in the same section for the last six years before he came. Yeah. And my wife, his stepmom, Terry, made it crystal clear to people around them. Watch your mouth on 14. Because, you know, when people get a little grown folk strings in them, they get a little to forget that somebody.
Starting point is 00:44:56 child and so it's been very good uh just watching his development watch his strength watch his knowledge but he's always had that and uh because he was you know me been a coach taught that to him at a very young age and how to watch film and not just look at the film but watch and how to break film down so he he embedded that when he came up to the universe kentucky and and coach white and coach profano they they both saw that yeah you know i've got to watching him growing up over the years playing with Dane and you know you guys playing summer ball baseball he's a good baseball player yes he's become a great leader and I expect he he's going to be the leader of definitely the secondary maybe the defense this year
Starting point is 00:45:39 well I think so I been a leader also knows you got to do what it takes on and off the field you got it in academically as well because the leader has to lead in all three categories and you know he's got a 4.0 GPA academics as well and he's just he just wants it and he wants to win for the University of Kentucky, not just for himself. So, and the other kids see that, other young kids see that. Now, he came on KSR in April with Drew Franklin. Right. Everybody was just raving about what he had to say, how he handled himself.
Starting point is 00:46:14 I know that has to make you feel proud as a dad. Yeah, he's a great athlete, but he's also a very respectful young man. Yeah, he very much so is. When he was young, I tell people this all the time. when he was young, every time we used to practice doing interviews when he was like five, six, and seven years of age. And every time he would say, you know, and Jerry Claiborne used to say, if they knew, they wouldn't ask the question.
Starting point is 00:46:41 So I remembered that. So we used to have to run for that for saying, you know. Yeah. So I did the same thing. He had to do push-ups. So every time when I would talk to him about an interview and he got that down, and no you knows, you know, just pause. And so, and his major is in telecommunication.
Starting point is 00:46:59 So he wants to be a broadcaster. He wants to be. So he's going to take our job someday. He's going to come back after he finishes his NFL career. God willing. Ty Bryant Radio. Yes. Well, I think a lot of it, to me, has had a lot to do with him.
Starting point is 00:47:16 It's finishing what he's doing and here at the University of Kentucky. We only got a couple minutes. But why do you used to hollery Yankee? Yankee at him. I got to give you, Yankee, Yankee. Okay. Yankee is, wow, you remember that? I do remember that.
Starting point is 00:47:31 I still do. Yankee is a name that a friend of mine is a U.S. Marshal, and he said, when Ty was little, he said, you need to let Ty say a certain name. Okay, he needs to say something. So if somebody grabs him, you will automatically go and get him. Everybody says, Dad. And the example he gave, the example he gave was when a car alarm goes off, people just look first.
Starting point is 00:47:57 By that time, your child's gone. You need to react. So Yankee, he used to watch his show called Yankee Doodoo. It was a baseball bat. And that was his show. But Yankee is in Lexington. Nobody thinks of the Yankees. So if he says Yankee to me, I'm running.
Starting point is 00:48:14 If I say Yankee, that means right now. So even today at 20, if I text him and I say Yankee, he knows I need to speak with him right now. It's urgent. It's urgent. Dad needs to talk to you to tell you something. Yeah. So I remember seeing you on the sidelines.
Starting point is 00:48:28 Yankee, Yankee, Yankee, and he immediately looked right at you. Yes. You're pointing out something to have him do or coaching him on the sideline? Yes, yes, quite often, quite often. But, you know, and filling up on the question you said, it's been very fun. I'm looking forward to him moving around on the defensive side of the ball and showing his talent. He's very talented. He's very aware of what's going on in Coach White's defense.
Starting point is 00:48:51 I really think he's due for a breakout year. I think he's the guy in the secondary. He's due for a big breakout year. Proud of him, man. I appreciate you coming and enjoying us a little bit, and we're excited to how. See how he plays out this year and in the NFL. God's willing.
Starting point is 00:49:05 All right. Cisco Bryant, appreciate your brother. Thank you, Mr. Limb. All right, we'll have another special guest coming up. He's already here. Devin, we're going to talk a little NFL. Can you believe Devin's in the NFL? That guy right there is in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:49:16 Well, here's the thing is on Devin. Okay, I didn't know his brother as much. I coached Devon. at Bryan Station in the secondary. So it was very exciting. So he holds everything to you, his NFL career. You were your secondary coach in high school. He ran my defense at Bryan Station and made me look good.
Starting point is 00:49:34 I can tell you that right now. Well, thank you again. Okay, appreciate Cisco. Thank you. Before we go to break, we do want to give a shout out, Billy, to Peanut. One of our callers, calls the pre-show, calls KSR, involved in a really bad traffic accident. Apparently, Billy's doing okay, but he's banged up pretty bad. Yeah, it's going to be a long road to recovery.
Starting point is 00:49:52 had to use the jaws of life to get him out of a car accident, but I think he is doing better now. So sending our thoughts and prayers to Peanut and his family. Shout out to Peanut. Absolutely, hang in there. I kind of, when he calls you guys, you can't hear him. He's usually on some heavy machinery. When he's trying to call him, you can't hear him.
Starting point is 00:50:08 But he's become a good caller, and I know a lot of people down there worried about him. Gary and Orlando sent me a message about it, and I think Casey Hayfellers has got some information that you can reach out to me if you need to. All right, well, take our break. Come back. Devon Key of the Denver Broncos will join us. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
