We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes,
Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her.
What? Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.

for kentucky sports radio matt is traveling the day it's a travel day for matt drew is in
on vacation in denver and then shan the dude down sun in his buns in florida somewhere billy so
i think we still shouldn't maybe try to call him for the show's over just see what what the heck he's up
Well, he's got enough vacation days.
You know he's going to use them.
They don't roll over.
So it's kind of a bullpen day.
We thought we'd bring in a different special guest every 30 minutes,
kind of keep the show moving with different stuff.
We had Sean Woods and Cisco Bryant in the first hour.
We're going to start at the second hour with NFL Denver Bronco.
I still know he was little Devin.
You're a little Devin Key to me.
Remember of the Denver Broncos, Devin Key?
We had you on last year at about this time before you went to camp.
ended up with a great year last year man how what's your head at right now i feel good just
same as last year you know clear-headed uh feel good body-wise and everything so
looking forward to this year again you got on the field a lot yeah played a lot of special
teams and got on the field on defense a lot you know you had to you had to earn your stripes
and you did it i feel like i just made good relationships with the coaches um just had to earn
their trust and I felt like I earned it midway through camp and I could kind of see it a little
bit and just through the season they could always call on me and I was you know you're kind of like
the utility guy we need you on this special team go here we need you on this special team we need you in
the defense to do that we need you over here to do that anywhere that they need me I feel like I can
you know go do it I feel like that's another reason why they instead they're trusting me
you just got back from OTAs not long ago and how did not everything go yeah everything was good
we do it a little different uh Coach Payne
you know, he's big on the, you know, conditioning and weightlifting.
So we did that a little bit longer than, you know, most other teams and then got our OTA practices in.
And, I mean, they were good.
I feel really good about this team this year.
Everybody looks ready to go and more confident than ever.
We talked about this when you were here last summer.
Lexington doesn't produce a lot of NFL football players.
We just don't.
Now, University of Kentucky does.
Yeah.
But Lexington doesn't.
Right.
And right now with you and Jedrick Wills and Landon Young, we've got three guys that kind of grew up together.
playing together all in the NFL.
And Lucky Jackson forgot about him.
I mean, that's kind of cool.
That's super cool.
Just, you know, because we were all friends coming out of high school too.
Like growing up, we played against each other in middle school, high school,
and just kind of stay connected in a way.
Don't, you know, talk to each other every day, but it's one when you see them in town
or actually you see him on the game field.
And, you know, it's always a what's up like because we're from the same place.
Do you like, is there, you still have like pinch me moments to think?
that when you look in the locker room or you're in a game and you're like, man, I'm in the NFL.
Every once in a while, I was telling a, you know, a few friends maybe last month or a couple weeks ago.
And I was just like, you know, I don't think it's really hitting me yet.
I'm just kind of living in it right now.
And then I feel like after the fact it's going to be like, all right, like I was actually there.
But I've been enjoying my time so far.
So this will be your fourth year?
Fifth.
This will be your fifth year.
Yeah, going into my fifth year.
Yep.
Yeah, you had two with the Chiefs?
And then the rest has been with the Denver Broncos.
See, like I said earlier, I still see you as Little Devin Key,
the guy that Corey Price just posted a picture of winning the fastest kid in town race.
I was going to say, I don't know where he got that picture from.
I wonder if my mom even has that.
Oh, that's pretty cool.
But, you know, it happened so fast, it seemed like, you know,
you left Bryan Station, went to Western Kentucky, it happened so fast next thing we know.
We're watching you play in the NFL.
Right.
I remember, I mean, just on draft day, obviously, like, you guys were over there
and then it went to the end of the draft.
And, you know, it was that process of where it was like everybody's name called
and mine that get called and then went on a draft.
But it still was a great day just to have the people closest to me around, you know, for that moment.
So where do you see yourself with the Broncos this year?
I feel like I feel good.
Same as last year.
See myself, you know, playing on special teams, you know, being in there on defense whenever asked the plan.
You know, Matt Marsh was the principal at San Antonio Elementary,
and now it's, I'm drawing a blank on his name right now.
now.
Oh, he's going to kill me.
I can see his face.
I can't think.
Knoblin.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Knoblin is the principal now.
I've told both of them said, you know,
Sandersville Elementary School has produced an NFL player.
That was the first, I guess you would say, graduating class.
You were.
Fifth grade.
You were the first fifth grade class in the new school.
So they have produced an NFL player at Santerville Elementary School.
So I think that's pretty cool.
That is cool.
Yeah.
Brian Station is, you know, they've had Keel Sanford, Cornell Burbage.
Franklin Master, Dermani.
That's what I'm saying.
You know, so.
I've had a few come through there.
Brian Station has produced a good level of NFL talent as well.
Sleeper athletes, for sure.
We don't get enough love, but we're over there.
Well, that's what I was going to say.
Why Brian Station should embrace that?
These kids that are at Bryan Station now need to know, dude, they were here.
They were in this locker room.
They made it to the NFL.
Why don't they do something a little more over there?
I don't know.
I put that on me a little bit too.
I don't go over as much, so maybe that's something I got to do.
I think your dad told me they do have something in the weight room or the locker room with you guys.
Yeah, former players, yeah.
That made it to the NFL and everything.
Yeah.
So I do have to say this.
You look a lot different.
A little bit?
You finally cut all your hair.
I did.
When is the last time you had a haircut?
It's probably like my sophomore year of high school.
So.
You haven't had a haircut since your sophomore year of high school.
Yeah.
Billy.
He had Troy Palomalo hair.
Yeah.
So you didn't have your entire five-year career at Western Kentucky.
Long hair.
You never had a haircut.
Never.
And then you just got it cut just not long, not that long ago.
Yeah, I was tired of it, looking for something new.
What did they do?
Did they take it and do something with all that hair?
No, he cut it off, dropped on the floor.
He swept it up and there it went.
He was in the trash.
You know, Billy, our producer here, he's a Western Kentucky Hilltopper.
Yeah, he remember when you were playing there, Billy.
Oh, yeah.
Of course.
He was a great player.
Were you working in the media when he was playing over there?
What years were you there?
Devin?
My first year was 2016 and then last year, 2020.
So, yeah, I was there 13 to 17.
So I was getting banned from the football premises right when you were there.
Yeah, they banned him because he was a little critical.
You were critical of the head coach, Billy?
Is that right?
You know, I think were you a Sanford recruit, Devin?
No, I was a Brahm recruit.
Brom, yeah.
That's when things were well there.
And then Sanford took over.
I tried to tell people, but they didn't like,
Squeak wheel gets the oil, you know?
I don't know if you guys know,
with Sanford is a he works media out there in Denver now so it was last year during camp he had
you know he was doing interviews and then feel somebody come behind me and kind of grab my show I'm like
all right who is this and then it turned around as hell oh way I think that was the first time I saw him
since Western yeah so crazy yeah coach braham recruited you but you never got to play for him
right no so I got so he was still there my freshman year oh he was there yeah so my first season
where I redshirted it he was the coach there okay
after the season, that's when he left to go to Purdue.
And then you played for Sanford for the rest of your career?
For two years, and then Tyson Hilton.
Tyson Hilton, that's right.
That's crazy.
Sanford's now with the Denver Broncos.
You're with the Denver Broncos up there.
So what do you remember the most about your career at Western Kentucky?
You got to play in a couple bowl games.
Got to play a few bowl games.
We only won one bowl game, though, while I was playing.
But probably just, you know, the small community of Bowling Green.
It was always nice, you know, being there wasn't nothing too big.
You had a lot of food places, which I love to enjoy.
It's where me and my wife had our first kid.
So there's a lot of memories there.
Yeah, just the brotherhood that I made with a few players that, you know,
we still stay in contact today.
I got to tell this story.
I can't remember if I told it last year or not.
So you registered your freshman year at Western.
Your first college football game where you're in uniform.
Yeah.
You don't tell your parents you're going to start at safety.
They did not know until the defense walked on the field and saw you in the back field.
You never told them you were going to start at safety.
Well, I got another story that kind of relates to that.
Yeah.
When I first got my first start of the NFL, I didn't tell them either.
You didn't even tell them you're going to start the NFL?
Were they there that day?
Yeah, they were there.
Uh-huh.
So I just kind of made it like a big surprise.
I knew both of them were coming out.
So I was like, you know, I'm not even going to tell them.
I'm just, you know, first play the game, just be out there.
Just run out there.
Well, Dante, he said when you walked out of Western Kentucky, he goes, what's he doing out there?
You know, I thought you'd made a mistake.
What's he doing out there?
And you started.
And I know when he saw you started in the NFL, he probably started, you know, he's your dad's a big baby.
Anyway, probably crying like a big baby over there.
Yeah, same story.
And then after the game, they were just joking around, like, why did you do that again?
Yeah.
You had some great moments in the NFL last year.
What was your thinking of the one?
I know you tackled Baker Mayfield one time.
I got that great picture of you doing that.
Got a sack on hell.
That was my first sack of the NFL.
Kind of fell into it in a way.
You know, I was taking my dropping coverage, and then I don't have anything,
and then he got out of the pocket when I made a tackle.
So that was my first one.
But yeah, it's probably most memorable is probably when I got another start at home.
And it was the defensive introductions.
So my first start was it was the offensive introductions.
So I didn't get to run out by myself and why they like put my name and stuff on the JumboTron.
So I was like, dang, like I wish I would have that moment.
And then one of our safeties got hurt the week before.
So the next week they were like, all right, Deb, you're going to start again.
And it was the defensive introductions.
And I was like, yes, like I'll have that moment where I can run out.
And it's just like me and the crowds, like, yelling and everything.
I feel like that was like super cool.
So you did have a pitch me moment.
That was a good pitch of him.
I guess that, yeah, that was the one.
Smoke going up in the air, fire, or shoot.
Running out or starting an NFL game and everything on there.
So we'll take a break with the phone calls.
859-2-802-287.
You want to call and ask him about football.
I got to ask about your little brother what he's up to now since he kind of left us.
See what he's up to and all that.
You got a new member of your family.
We got a lot to cover.
We'll come back.
859-280-2287.
That's Clark's Publish Shop phone number.
We got Devin'Kee on KSR.
We come back.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
A rep.
My mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, Ms. Parker.
Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app,

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night bases on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball, like,
After you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

So we're out on the patio. I went in and took a little sneak peek what's going on. Billy. There's a lot of stuff going on in there. We got some really good things we're going to add to the menu. We can't talk about
about the woods oh okay so joining us uh for another segment is devon key member of the Denver
Broncos you and I we just told one maybe the best devon key story I know can I tell the story
can I can't tell the story about the Cancun story might as well it's been many years ago so we
vacationed with your family and my family we all vacationed down in cancun together and it
came the the morning where we had to leave and we had to catch the shuttle to the airport at like
it's like five five in the morning yeah it was super early so we're all got up we all
pack our stuff when we're all meeting down in the lobby and we look around and we're missing
somebody there's no devon and there's no mason all stat they are nowhere to be found they have not
come home and we're in the lobby and we're trying to call you and the cell service down there obviously
is horrible couldn't call you so we're just about to get on the shuttle to go to the airport here comes
devon key walking through the lobby hey what's up how you doing it's five o'clock in the morning and
you were just walking in, I thought your mom was going to kill you at that moment.
Yeah, I definitely saw red in her eyes for sure.
It was one of those who you had the wristband to get in all the little bars in the area of downtown
Cancun.
And take advantage of it.
It was our last night.
We were 18 and we were just like, you know what?
Like, we were the knuckleheads of, you know, just down there being a tourist.
And then they're like, oh, man, like, you know, dude, we got to get back.
And so then we finally caught, like, it was like one of the buses.
This is an advance to take us back, and we made it, so.
I don't know how you pulled it off.
You guys ran up to your room, through your stuff in your suitcase,
and made it in time for the shuttle to take us to the airport.
I don't know how planned it was, but, I mean, you made it.
Yeah.
It was, we had our suitcases ready.
It's like we packed before we even went out, so we were like, we were good to go
no matter what time we get back.
All right, we got to talk about a little brother.
Yeah.
Had three years here at Kentucky.
Yep.
Decides after this past season, he's going to pack up, go to Nebraska.
Right.
I know he talked to you a lot.
throughout the process. What was your advice you gave him and how did that conversation, how did those
conversations go? I just felt like, you know, as this older brother, I just had to keep it real with them,
give them, you know, the best advice. You know, I've been through it, obviously not transferring,
but, you know, just going through college. And I just told him like, hey, like this is your last year.
You know, you got to do what's best for you. You got to, you know, you want to go out there,
put your best foot forward, you know, put the best film out there. That way you can,
you know, set yourself up for the next level and that decision was to go somewhere else.
Just a change the scenery.
He still, you know, owes everything in the UK because that's where he went at first.
He spent three years and loved it here.
I just feel like it was time for him to go.
And he felt the same way, obviously.
But, I mean, he's, he had three different quarterbacks every year that he was there.
Yeah.
He had three different office coordinators.
So it was, you know, it was just the ups and downs of it.
And now I feel like he's in a good position.
He's getting coached by an ex-NFL coach.
And a couple guys that I've played with have told me a lot about the officer coordinator.
Obviously the receiver coach is there now that was here last year.
So he just had a great connection with them.
And I guess that's the ultimate reason why he decided to choose Nebraska.
I think you hit on the two things.
I think he made a difference.
the quarterback in Nebraska, and the coaches at Nebraska.
Right.
I think that was the biggest difference maker, don't you?
Right.
I think so, too, yeah.
A quarterback that's, you know, he was a five-star,
I'm pretty sure coming out of high school,
and, you know, he's got a great arm from what I've seen,
and it seems like he's looking to make the next step in his career as well,
so it's going to be good for him.
I know he's going to wear Nebraska this year,
but I know your heart and his heart are still here at Kentucky.
Your dad played here.
drug you guys to games from time you were little.
I mean, my dad had season tickets for the longest
until probably we got to like middle school or high school.
And, yeah, we would always come to the games and, you know,
tailgate and, I mean, growing up, I mean, this is where I wanted to go.
But, you know, obviously, things worked out differently for me, for the best,
fortunately.
So, yeah.
I mean, I still live here in Lexington.
So, I mean, that tells you how much that the city means to me.
And I bet you anything.
He'll end up living back down here in Lexington.
I mean, there's no doubt, yeah.
His plane days are over as well.
We do have to give him a shout out, though.
No, for sure.
It is his birthday today, so y'all flood his Twitter and Instagram with birthday wishes.
He's making the most of his birthday right now.
He's down there in Jamaica.
What a tough life.
Yeah, it's hard for him out there.
Down in Jamaica to celebrate his birthday.
Yeah.
He posted a picture of him and Jaden last night.
They all had on cute little matches out there.
What is that?
Oh, bye.
Hey, it must be the new generation, huh?
Matching outfits down there, so happy birthday to Little Dane.
No, for sure.
All right, I got a message here on the A-Vision Glass text machine.
Ask Devin if he's going to allow Dane to moss him when he makes it to the big leagues.
No, I can't allow that to happen.
I've talked to a lot of people about, you know, what happens if you guys play each other or this and how you're going to say,
I'm like, I got to treat him like any other player if he comes across the middle.
middle you know i got if i got to make a tackle i'm gonna tackle them just like anybody else and then
you get up and talk smack to him might talk a little bit of smack like hey welcome to the league
because you guys are spaced out age enough you never really played together oh never you know yeah it was
so you sure didn't play against each other yeah we're six years apart so it's uh we never got
the chance so i got to keep uh keep my foot in the league and uh yeah play either play against each other
next year or play with each other who knows well you know i think i told you i had this dream where
you guys both were the new orleans i think you're with the new orleans saints and dain was with
ls u like you guys were in the same town maybe that little oh i think so yeah yeah yeah we guys
ended up being the same town or something like that but yeah if he comes across the middle
you're out there at safety you got a job to do yeah i got a job to do i don't care if that's a little
brother yeah i got a job to do i don't want any money coming out of my pocket so it's going to be
it's going to be legal but uh yeah he's definitely going to maybe thank you
twice about doing it again.
You know, your Broncos kind of created a little buzz in the NFL last year.
You know, I think they kind of surprised the people how well you guys played with the new
rookie quarterback and everything.
I think so, yeah.
Yeah, I think he's going to make that next jump in year two.
Defense is still looking good.
I mean, we finished in the top five last year.
And, yeah, that was the first time that the Broncos been to the playoffs since they made
the Super Bowl back in 2015.
So, I mean, that was super great to be a part of.
and looking to, you know, take that next step and make the playoffs and then make a push towards the Super Bowl.
You got a little playoff bonus when you make the playoffs?
Yeah, that never hurts.
I was freezing up there in Buffalo, but, I mean, it was nice.
Now, you were telling me last night when we met, by the way, your dad had his retirement dinner last night, Dante retired.
You guys, I didn't realize you guys, the Broncos are playing in London this year.
We are.
Week six after we, pretty sure it's after we leave Philly, we go.
overseas to London to play the Jets.
Which would be a super cool experience just playing overseas.
It'll be my first time going to London, so it would be super cool just to play in the
atmosphere amongst, you know, fans that are, you know, kind of new to the sport.
They'll probably show up wearing all types of jerseys from every different team, but it would be super cool.
Who do you playing there?
The Jets.
Playing the Jets there.
Yeah, they'll probably be split.
There'll be Jets fans and Bronco fans just because people in London don't know who to prove for.
You'll see the Steelers jerseys, Vikings jerseys,
Jaguars jerseys, who knows.
And you're going to take your whole family.
Yeah, we're going to try to get them all out there.
I mean, what a great experience.
I mean, that's another thing of the NFL.
You know, you guys, you're still Devin Keat.
You still enjoy going to London.
Right.
And they're going to let you do some touristy stuff when you're out there.
Right, yeah, because we'll go out there right after the game on Sunday.
So we'll spend a week out there and get to see the, you know, the city and everything.
Speaking of your whole family, you just had another one.
I did.
Yes.
He just turned a year old on June 26th.
So, I mean, it's been going by super fast.
I think it's because of the season, and I look back and I was like, I mean, where is the time going?
Yeah.
He's just walking running around, really, just chasing his older brother.
Well, you guys call him fat man.
Yeah, fat man, fat fat.
He's a little chunky thing.
He's a chunky little boy.
Is he going to be your offensive lineman?
And Grace is going to be your receiver?
It could be.
I don't know how big he'll end up getting.
But, I mean, from right now, like you said, it looks like a little offensive line.
Well, listen, man, best of luck to you.
You know, I'm super proud of you.
Love watching you play.
I love watching your play since you were in middle school.
Yeah.
At L-TMS right down the road down there.
So hang in there, best of luck to you.
And I can't wait to see you play this year and improve on what you've been doing.
For sure.
Thanks for having me.
Devon Key, Denver Broncos.
God, it's crazy, man.
All these young guys that we watch them grow up.
Dane's going to be in NFL.
Ty Bryant.
Oh, yeah.
Cisco's son's going to be in the NFL and all these guys from Lexington.
You watch them grow up.
And all of a sudden, you're on their on TV playing at the NFL.
NFL, so it is so cool.
How bad's the altitude, Devin?
Oh, yeah, it definitely gets to you.
Does it?
Yeah, it takes about, like, it takes me about like two to three days.
It kind of used to it again.
But, yeah, the air is super dry, kind of, it's heavy on your lawns.
It's a different experience up there.
Working out, I guess, especially at play at next year, yeah.
Especially other teams that come to play at home.
So I guess that's why they've got to come a couple days early to try to get
accustomed to it before they play you guys.
It's tough, though.
We've got one more special guests coming up.
I don't seem yet, but I think he'll be walking up.
And he is one of my all-time favorites, Rob Bromley.
Remember Bromley was doing sports when you were back there.
And so he's retired now.
We're going to talk to Rob Blomley, Rob Bromley.
Rapid Aaron Kentucky Sportsbreda, we come back.
We'll be right back.
Ryan and Billy.
This is KS.R.
All right, welcome back.
Ryan Lemon here, live on the patio at KS Bar and Grill.
Our next special guest has showed up.
Before we get to him, Billy, we have to talk about today's Bobby Bonilla Day.
It is Bobby Bonilla Day.
What a holiday.
He makes another million dollars for not playing, right?
How many years in a row has he received this now?
For 15 years, he's gotten $1.193 million each year to not play for the Mets.
That means he's gotten $17 million and he still has 10 years left.
That's incredible.
That's unbelievable Bobby Bonilla Day until 2035.
So happy Bobby Benin today.
And I just saw, too, that I guess Shay Gilesa Alexander signed some massive mega deal with Oklahoma City,
like almost $300 million or something like that.
Yeah, four-year, $285 million.
Ryan. My goodness. Well, when you're the MVP and you bring a championship to your city, you're in good bargaining position.
Oh, yeah, no doubt. Yeah. All right, time now to welcome in our other honor guest, and I'm so excited about this.
You know, I'm an old guy, but for me to say, I grew up watching this guy, ladies and gentlemen, retired, I am old.
Retired WKYT sports anchor Rob Romley, man, it's so good to see you. It really is. Good to see you. It really is.
good to see you. It's good to see you. And thanks for whenever you've seen me around or walking
someplace in and out of the UPS store wherever you've. That's right. We did at one time.
You've yelled at me and made a point. And let me say a couple of things before we get going,
Ryan. You're about the only guy who could text me at quarter to nine last night and say,
hey, will you give me 30 minutes from 1130 to noon and get me to drive halfway across town to do it?
No, you're not the only one, but, hey, how do you get stuck doing two hours all by yourself?
Well, how's that happening?
Exactly.
This is a, it's Bullpen Day.
Matt's having a travel day.
Drew and Shannon are on vacation, so that's why you're here.
That's why I call guys like you to come in and help me here a little bit.
I heard the little pieces of your previous three.
Yeah.
And it was very interesting.
And, you know, one thing that was interesting about it because, you know, you grew up in Indiana.
Right.
There was an Indianapolis connection with Sean and an Indianapolis connection with Cisco.
Correct.
And, of course, there's an Indianapolis connection with you having gone to Butler.
So, you know, let me say a couple other things.
One of your biggest fans is my son.
Really?
Robbie?
Robbie.
And we're very proud of him.
He's working for Bosch.
And he's over in Germany for a month now working.
Is he really?
So he can't.
He can't hear this today.
He's in Strawbanger, Northwest of Munich, working at a plant.
Good for him.
Yeah, he told me, you know, he said, I just love Ryan.
He's one of your biggest, one of your biggest fans.
See, I remember Robbie.
You're at the team hotel in Kentucky at the NCAA tournament.
Robbie's one of the little kids out there with a pen and paper trying to get autographs.
That's how I remember Robbie.
Probably maybe at the SEC tournament.
Probably the SEC tournament.
Yeah, Atlanta.
And Atlanta.
And then there's one other thing, I want to say, you know, because we talked, spent a few years now.
It was in the studio out on Nicholasville.
Correct.
Last time I think you were on.
But it was you and me and Jared Lorenzo.
Was it really?
Jared.
It was the three of us.
Yeah.
And I don't know.
I don't know whether we did the whole, we did an hour at least, I know.
I don't know whether we did.
But here we are almost at the anniversary of that he passed just before the 4th of July.
July 3rd.
Was it the third?
Yeah, it was just before or fourth.
Yeah.
What a wonderful guy.
Great guy.
Yes.
What a great memory.
You remember that he was in studio the last time he came in to do the show with us.
You know, you have, you go through your time, Ryan, and I've always been pretty reserved and, you know, frankly, kind of, kind of shy.
But I wish I wouldn't, I wish I wouldn't have known him better.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I wish I would have known him, you know, half, halfway as well as you did.
I hope this makes you feel good.
His son, Taden, who was like, I think 10 at the time when he passed, has now Division I football offers playing at Fort Thomas Highlands.
Is that right?
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Yes, yeah.
So that might make you feel good.
That does.
That does.
You did utter one of the most famous lines that time when you came in the studio with Jared and me when you did the show.
Your famous line that I remember the rest of my life, I said, Rob, you had such a great career.
You were getting ready to retire.
I said, what's one thing you were most proud of?
Ryan, I'm most proud of the fact, I didn't have to do one second of sports talk radio.
Well, you know, I got away with a total in radio and TV.
I got away with probably a little over 45 years.
Yeah.
Now, of course, it, you know, in the early years that I was in the business.
When you were in Lima, Ohio?
I was in Lima, yeah, and working small market radio.
as a news and sports director doing high school games.
Yeah.
Did it, did a season of, which was, you look back on stuff, did a season of bowling green football.
Did you really?
And Don Neeland was the coach.
Wow.
So when I'm 23 years old here, you know, and you're doing bowling green football, and it was, it was fun, it was interesting.
Jack Lambert, it was Jack Lambert's senior year at Kent.
And Don James was at Kent and Dick Crum was at Miami.
Yeah.
I think Miami went undefeated.
They were pretty good.
But you never would think, you know, here's Don Neeland.
He's going to be in the college football.
He's going to be top 20, all time.
Oh, yes.
Eventually, you know, they ran him out of Bowling Green.
He went up to Michigan and was Shembuckler's quarterback coach
and then landed at West Virginia.
But those are the things early in life.
When you're 23 years old, what does it lead to?
And it's just, but it was a great memory from 1973.
and working in Ohio.
I couldn't have been in Ohio four and a half better years.
My earliest memories, my first introduction to Rob Romley was the tape-delayed broadcast of the UK games.
Yeah, that was.
I think that's how people in Lexington knew you from the local news, but for the rest of the state,
we got to know Rob Romley from doing play-by-play of the tape-delayed broadcast.
That was well before the days of the SEC Network and the other conference networks.
and well, a little bit before the days of ESPN,
and eventually they took it all over.
But with football, Ryan, the first year I did the games was 1980.
Tommy Bell was on with me.
Tommy Bell.
Yeah, I had some great other, like Charlie McCullors and, you know, Derek, Bill Ransdell and many, dusty, Tim.
But we did, like, I think the first year, 1980, we did 10 of the 11 games.
Really?
Yeah.
Now, they'd only let us do one game live.
Uh-huh.
And that would always be, that would be, if it was on the road, it would be the LSU game.
And then it would be a big non-conference game on the road.
They would let us do one game live on the road.
The others had to be taped delayed.
And you couldn't start them any earlier than, I don't know, maybe, I guess it might have been 1130.
As soon as the news was over.
Yes.
As soon as the local news is over.
Yes.
Game Camp, broadcast will come on.
Of course, that's back in the days when we did basketball, too.
Yeah.
Well, the first year, Ryan, we probably did, you know, live games.
We probably did seven or eight live.
And then, you know, the rest, the conference games had to be all taped delayed.
Uh-huh.
They wouldn't let us do a conference game.
But eventually, as you go through the 80s, that's all whittled away.
And ESPN, you know, the SEC network eventually came in.
but eventually you got down to the point where you were just doing the two exhibition games.
Yeah.
And then eventually it got down to where you were just doing Big Blue Madness.
And eventually they took that.
And the whole, you know, the whole darn thing was going to.
Like you said, you did a couple of football games with Dusty Bonner and Tim.
Yeah, Dusty and Tim.
That wasn't too long ago.
Dermani.
Dermonti was on the season.
He was on the year of 9-11 because the Indiana game.
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
So we had to go up to Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
in the first Saturday in December.
Right.
They moved it all the way to December.
They rescheduled the IU game.
And Dermani did that game.
Fortunately, it wasn't.
It was a fairly mild afternoon.
But Dermani did.
But I had some great, you know, starting with Tommy Bell and Charlie McCullors,
who was one of Fran's assistants.
And then, you know, Derek Ramsey.
Yeah.
We did the Alabama game together when Mummy beat Alabama.
That was probably the most memorable game.
that I ever did.
You were calling?
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
And then, you know, Bill.
Billy was on with me, Bill Randstel.
So I had some great, some great people alongside.
It was a great, great memory.
I was very, very fortunate to get to do it.
Not only did you do play-by-play for football and basketball,
but you also did the coaches' shows for so many years.
You got close to the coaches, starting with friends.
starting with Frank Hersey and starting with Joe B.
Yeah.
And when I came here, Ryan, I always, I will always say this.
I was very fortunate that Joe was the coach here with basketball because he made me,
he made me feel like I was a part of it, which was, which meant the world to me.
Yeah.
And there were other people over at the university who did, who did too.
They were, they were fantastic Cliff and his wife, Dr. Singletary.
and his wife and who was I.
You're Rob Roblin.
I was, you know, I was just, you know, pretty young.
You know, 26 when I came here in 77, and then 30 when I started doing the stuff with the coaches.
Yeah.
But you get pretty close to the coaches and, you know, it can be up and down with the coaches.
The hard thing with the coaches were always the downfalls.
Right.
Starting with the first one, you know, was with Fran in 81.
And then, of course, the situation with Eddie Sutton, which was in 89.
But, you know, you have a lot of great moments and a lot of great memories, too.
And certainly a lot of great things to look back on, not just here, but you lived other places.
You grew up in Indiana.
Indiana.
I grew up in upstate New York.
and spent four years in Indianapolis,
four and a half years in Ohio in the last 48 I've been here.
And I've been four, met my wife here, and I raised my son here.
They're both UK graduates.
And like I told, we're both very proud of him.
And it got a lot to be thankful for, really, really do.
Well, we're very thankful you're here.
I'm so excited you to be here with this.
I gave you all kinds of notice.
I don't know what you're complaining at 9.30 at 9.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was like quarter to 9.
I was watching something on Netflix there, and I didn't see the message.
I didn't respond to it.
I gave you a ton of yes.
Yes, you did.
A ton of yes.
Okay, what does Rob Romley watch on Netflix?
Oh, gosh.
On a Monday night.
We're getting up in our years.
We've been watching that series The Crown, which is very good.
Extremely well-cast.
Yeah.
And who in the world knows what the private conversations were?
That's true.
between the queen and the prince of wales and all this stuff you know who knows but it's it's
interesting to watch and you can you can really learn a lot if you go way back to the the earlier
seasons of it with elizabeth's life and the historical stuff yes what she went through and what the
years were like when she first became queen and and all of that who the prime ministers were uh what
her dealings were with the prime ministers beginning with Churchill and all that it's you can learn a lot from it but who's who's to say what uh and i'm for one i don't care for rewriting history
i don't i don't really care for it uh like i heard you guys talking i listened occasionally somebody was
talking about something on jerry west that he he threw his MVP through a window or something that
there was some kind of the the documentary about the lakers yeah depicted that and he was suing because he didn't
do that.
Well, you know, I can understand his point on that.
Yeah.
I don't.
I don't.
Do you want to dramatize it so much?
Well, you know, you're doing television.
Yeah.
It's what you're doing.
Right.
I got to get somebody to watch this.
But he insisted that never happened.
Yeah.
And I certainly believe him.
I believe him more than the producers that were putting him to make, like you said, TV good.
That's where it comes down.
We've got take our break.
We'll come back.
We've got one more segment with Rob Brownley.
I can talk to you for two hours.
We got story after story after story.
I would love it.
And I'm so glad you decided to come in, even though you got, it didn't invite you until late last night.
So we'll take our final break.
Come back, final segment with Rob Romley here on the patio.
KS Bar and Grill.
What's up, CB?
Ryan Lemon, we'll be right back.
Last night, a blown call changed a game.

I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we
don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth,
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.
Join me, Kear Gaines,

What's up, guys?
This is Clivert Taylor the 4th.
And on my podcast, The Cliverts show,
I'm bringing you conversations
about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
A rep.
My mama want you to weigh better.
What?
Hey, Miss Parker.
Listen to the Clifferts show on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flanks.
He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah.
You figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
There was the Rob Bromley drop.
One of the most famous drops we have.
Play it one more time, Billy, so he can make sure he can hear it.
And he had some swagger.
I think you were talking about John Caliper.
was that from? Wow.
We pulled it off one of your sports cats.
I think, uh, wow.
So let me get our final read in here.
And then we'll go to talk a little more stories.

We're going to wrap it up here with Rob Bromley,
the retired guru
from WKYT. You know,
a lot of you guys have kind of decided to hang
up that I when I got here, Alan Cutler, Rob Bromley, Jerry Tipton, now John Clay.
You guys are all the guys that I admired and looked up to and aspired to be someday
are all decided, man, enough's enough.
Yeah, I, you know, I got more, like I said, more than 45 years out of it, Ryan.
I'm in 40 here, almost 41.
That's amazing.
But I was, you know, it's, it's not.
It's not easy to go that long.
No, it's not.
You go through a lot of ups and downs.
Well, you know, we're talking during the break.
I go to, I never see the 11 o'clock news.
The 11 o'clock news is the big part of your life and my life for so long.
I am never up long enough to see the 11 o'clock news.
I started doing the 11 o'clock news at the LIO and Lima the week that President Nixon resigned in August of 74.
Wow.
That's when I started working nights.
Uh-huh.
And I worked nights until the very end of September, 2017.
So how many, I mean, how many years?
I work nights, basically.
And, you know, you get home and, you know, I don't go right to bed.
You can't go to bed.
You can't go to bed.
You can't go to bed.
You know, you're watching television.
You get something out of the refrigerator.
Watching Dave Letterman?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
It's just, and I'll tell you when I first started doing it
After doing early morning radio for two years, it felt great.
It felt great to sleep in.
But I think as you go along and you're not in your 20s anymore, you're in your 30s, it gets a little more complicated.
And when you're in your 40s, it gets a little more complicated.
In your 50s, it gets a little more, you know, you have a youngster and you depend on your wife a lot.
That's right.
Certainly I did.
But got through it, you know, got through one, the whole land.
The landscape of the business changed a whole lot as far as what radio.
It was owned by local people like KYT was owned by Kentucky Central.
I only went through one sale.
That's rare.
That's when the insurance company here fell apart.
I had K.wood-Lidford said to me once, you know, he said, you know, Rob, I never went through a sale.
Wow.
Because I guess, I don't know by the time H-A-S and the Bingham.
empire was was broken up over there yeah he'd already been out on his own but uh-huh
but uh he told me he never he never went through his sale but that's that can be a difficult
thing in our line of work it happens all the time and you're kind of starting to clock over
we're just about out of time like I said we got to come back we've got a bunch of stories
to tell uh really really good to see you man you look great I mean retirement retirement has done you
well partner I'm telling you I'm still standing still
standing doing well thankful to the all the people who you know come up to me and say something
and uh you know always felt a lot of love ryan once i got outside you know once you went outside
the walls of the station and got out there and uh people are wonderful that's the best part
about this business couldn't live in a better place yeah the people we work with is what i
miss the most about this business and i think you probably agree the same listen man thank you very
much you're well great to see you thank you're welcome and appreciate it all right we have a remote
We're in Versailles at a standard bread horse farm tomorrow, right?
Yes, High Bramble Park should be a good time out there.

High Bramble Park in Versailles, the pre-show and KSR, Matt will be back.
We'll be doing the show there.
It's our last show because we're off on Thursday and Friday, so come out and see us.
A rare show in Versailles, Billy.
We don't do very many shows in Versailles.
Yeah, looking forward to it, Versailles in some parts.
Thanks to all my guests.
Sean Wood, Siskel Bryant, Devin, Key, and Rob Bromley.
We've back at High Bramble Park tomorrow.
I remember park tomorrow and for sales.
We'll see you then.
Goodbye.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman

Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
