Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, July the 24th.
Starting point is 00:02:43 I am Matt Jones here on another sunny day in Lexington, Kentucky. You can give us a shout at Clark's puppet shop full line. That's 859-280-2287. Had good calls yesterday. If you guys want to ask more questions you can, I had a lot of positive feedback about Hour 2, where we were just kind of... Going down memory lane.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Reminis. A vision auto glass text machine is 772, 7754. And this edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. You call T.J. He will make them pay. Guys, I did seven hours of radio yesterday. And you're still a voice there. I did two hours of the Matt Jones podcast
Starting point is 00:03:20 and then three hours of ESPN. And by the end of it, I was out of things to say. Like even the last 30 minutes of ESPN, last night, I was like, okay, yeah, Michael Parsons, you know, because literally the Cowboys have been the lead story all three nights we were on and more Jerry Jones. And it's like, I mean, I'm just I hate the Cowboys now. And I used to kind of, the Bears were my team, but the Cowboys were kind of like a number two or three now. I just, I can't stand them because every single time something happens, it's Cowboys, Cowboys, Cowboys, Cowboys.
Starting point is 00:04:01 You just have to keep learning more about them. It's not going away. That's what all the shows want to talk about. I caught your, I'd say it's probably 8 to 830-ish. I was picking up some food, leaving an event and caught you all. It seemed like you were laughing a lot at that moment. Oh, I mean, that's a good thing about working with Myron is as I do laugh a lot because they, you know, ESPN like, it's just like whatever.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Do your thing. When they hand it to us, they do kind of do whatever. And so it ends up being fun. But I will say, you can only laugh. Like, when you get an hour seven of laughing, you're like, okay, I'm good. So I got home. I'm watching a show that I am embarrassed that I'm watching. What is it?
Starting point is 00:04:47 But I do kind of like it. Did you cave? Which one? Are you doing Love Island now? No, no, no. I wish it was. Because we're some of the few people left on earth that aren't watching. This is more embarrassing than watching Love Island.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I'm kind of into Gilded Age on HBO, which is about like 1880s social scene in New York. It's not even particularly good. But for some reason, I don't know why. I played one episode and now I'm like, I got to see, are they going to let Mrs. Russell enter the social society of old New York? I mean, Miss Astor, it feels like she's going. to at some point. And I'm got to be the only male watching this show in the United States. I don't think another male is watching it. But, you know, I've scrolled past it several times, but now I might join you. It's not bad. Maybe we could launch a Gilded Age podcast. It'll just be me and you. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I mean, I think if we, if we were to do a Gilded Age TV club, it would be me and you in like 65 year old women. Those are going to be the only people watching it. But I have to tell you, right. It's a good, like, go to sleep, fall asleep watching Gilded Age show. If that's your guilty pleasure right now, you do you, bud. It's pretty guilty, though, because it's not like with Love Island, at least that's, like, trashy. This is just old. People are all wearing those dresses where their butts go out. You know what I'm talking about?
Starting point is 00:06:18 Yeah, no, I mean, that's kind of what I, one of the things I like about it is they talk about how the neighborhoods are built. Did you know that the Statue of Liberty? Here's an interesting fact that I learned Don Gilded age last night, and I looked it up and it's true. Okay, the Statue of Liberty. You know what Statue of Liberty is, right? Like it hangs there. It's from New York. It's there in the ocean and it's the woman and she's holding up the torch.
Starting point is 00:06:39 You may not have known this. Initially, France only sent us the torch. Okay. And they said, hey, we want to send you this present. We're going to send you the torch. And then they go, they got to raise some money. We ain't paying for every. everything. Like we're going to pay for some of it. This is the torch, but you've got to raise some money.
Starting point is 00:06:57 And it's set in a park in New York for six years because they couldn't raise any money because everybody was like, we don't need that statue. So they thought it was just going to be the torch. And then in the 1880s, all these robber barons came and like started making a lot of money, got some money into it. And then France got the rest and we ended up with statute of liberal. But for a long time, it looked like we were only going to have the torch because Shannon, no one wanted the rest of Lady Liberty. It would be weird if we just had a torch there. right now instead of the statue. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:25 So think about that. Like we take the statue of liberty for granted. But for a long time, France was like, you get the torch. Now, y'all got to do some stuff for yourself. I want to see the torch. And then we were like, no. And then finally we got a little money in France. It's like, all right, we'll give you some more.
Starting point is 00:07:41 But for a while, it was only the torch. Well, I thought that it's not my history books, but it seemed like I thought France gave it to us as a gift. That's not totally true. They started as a gift. But it was like one of these, we're going to help you. help yourself. You know, yeah, exactly. You teach a man to fish or you hand.
Starting point is 00:07:59 You piece the rest together. Exactly. You got an arm. Shannon, they were like, you can contribute a face. And then we'll give you the body. Exactly. But for a long time, we only had the torch because we were like, well, we're just, we're not, we're not into it yet.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Well, one, spoiler alert, I just told you, I'm going to start watching the Gilded Age. Now I know how this happens. But now I never knew that. See? Did it have the, was it like to the elbow? I don't know. The hand, just the torch? I didn't realize.
Starting point is 00:08:23 how this is not what I thought we were going to be talking about today. There's this whole thing about, did you know about the coming out party? Like now we say the phrase coming out. Yeah. As like to mean like say you're gay. Right. But it used to be that phrase was meant women were coming out on the market to meet men.
Starting point is 00:08:43 And so a big thing in the show is when do they let these, there's a woman that she's like 22 and she's like, I'm ready to come out. And your mother's like, not yet. And like they're arguing about that. See, this is good entertainment, Ryan. And I'm also learning. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:57 So coming out, it's like today's time is like the limo pulling up on the Bachelor. That's them coming out. Yeah, I don't know if we have an equivalent now. Because I think like women now start dating like when they're in middle school. But there was a time that they were like, you can't be lip-locking with men until and then you have a ball to introduce the woman to society. To society. It is kind of like a product. It feels a little cattley.
Starting point is 00:09:21 But, you know, I don't know that women. and we're getting full rights in the Gilded Age. Well, I'm now, can't wait to get home and binge watch the Gilded Age. Now, you can see why it's a good come down from being on the ESPN radio. You go from Micah Parsons to the Gilded Age. I'm impressed you got a voice, to be honest, after seven hours. We got two more hours, and then tomorrow, where is our remote tomorrow again? It's in Nicholasville.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Nicholasville, what's the name of the place? Uh-huh. Yeah, I'm getting right there to it. It is at Kentucky Customs and Uplifting. Kentucky Customs and Uplifting. We've been over this. Upfitting. Uplifting.
Starting point is 00:09:54 That's the third time he's done that. Kentucky. I've got it written in my calendar. Uplifting tomorrow. Kentucky Customs and Uff, Ufitting. Upfitting. What do they up fit?
Starting point is 00:10:03 Like bedliners in the back of a pickup truck. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. So I don't have that. They want you to try to smash a watermelon with a sledgehammer in the back of their... Me?
Starting point is 00:10:12 Yeah. What are you, Gallagher? You want to smash them free? I'll do it. They want you to do it. That would be fun, I guess. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:21 So that's in Nicholsville. What's the address? Yeah, let me get right out. 119, Howard Street, Nicholasville. I'm going to also give away tomorrow in Nicholasville, because I'm feeling generous, some UK basketball tickets to that opening game against Purdue. Oh, that's going to end up being a hot ticket to get. It's going to be a hot ticket.
Starting point is 00:10:39 And one of those hot tickets, you'll get pieces of the watermelon that we smash. And you have a chance to win the tickets at Howard Way. Howard Street. Howard Street. in Nicholsville. And I got to figure out, somebody needs to tell me where to eat in Nicholsville.
Starting point is 00:10:54 I never eat Nicholson except Brandon Crossing, but I know they've got to have better stuff. Hey, wait a minute, wait a minute. I think the new Long John Silver's just opened out there. I said, it looked like there were three million people there on opening day.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Wait a minute. So there's a new Long John. Yes, and it just opened. Yes. And people, and they're like, out the door? Bunkers for it. Could be one of the best relaunches we've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:11:17 When is the last time I've eaten Long John Silver? I mean, well, you've got to go back a decade. It's been over 20 years for me. Is there one in Lexington? I don't think there's one election anymore. And is there one in Louisville? Yeah, yeah, just opened on Bartstown Road in Fern Creek.
Starting point is 00:11:33 So it's new too. Yeah. Bresstown Road in what? Just on Barstown Road in Fern Creek. In Furn Creek. Right there next to roosters and all that. Okay. That area, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:42 Oh, well, all right. Well, why is Long John's coming back? I mean, I'm for it. But, like, is there been a yearning for it? Well, yeah. I've been yearning for it. for it. We may have been able to get in. I mean, apparently the crowds have been insane. We may not be able to get into the Long John Silver's tomorrow. You're telling me you can't get
Starting point is 00:11:57 into Long Johns. I saw a picture. It was insane how many cars were there. People are just amazing. Like you just take something away from them. Like a Long John Silver's. Well, what else do we need to come back? If Long John's... Chee-Gis. It's coming back. They're coming back to? But is it not coming back here? Maybe one day, but not yet. Was it up in Minnesota? Are there... I'm going around. All right, what other, I'm trying to think of a fair. Shonies.
Starting point is 00:12:22 I don't feel like they're going to be out the door of Shonis. There used to be a Shonies. Every exit from here to like Corbyn. And then it just went away. Went away. Yeah. Well, good to know about the Long Johns. And the Gilded Age.
Starting point is 00:12:34 And the Gilded Age. Neither topics were things that I thought I would start about. What I thought I was going to start about is something that we haven't really talked about the last two days, which was Mark Pope had a press conference the other day. I'm starting to just rely on you, Drew, especially now, you know, until we get into the season. Drew updates me on the things I need to hear from press conferences. So Mark Pope, the only thing I really saw coming out of the press conference is he said we, he thought our defense was terrible and that we were going to have to get better.
Starting point is 00:13:06 In the scrimmage, yeah. In the Scrimmage against LaFamilia. He said, he said we couldn't guard anybody and he was disappointed. What else besides that? We talked a lot about that. But, you know, we've kind of, TBT's over, unfortunately. I wouldn't form any strong opinions about the team defense in the first half against the law familiar. I'd say the other big update was, even though we didn't get anything real concrete,
Starting point is 00:13:27 he still seems pretty good about Yellovich. I guess he just got done. Yeah, so it sounded like he thought he's going to get to come. They have his transcripts now, whatever he needed to do on that end with school. I guess he just completed. Now it's a matter of getting him over here. I guess I never thought about it, but to participate in summer workouts, you have to be in summer school. and I guess he just wasn't quite ready to have the workload to even be a participant.
Starting point is 00:13:48 But we learned from Big Z. I know. You can start school, Shannon, at any moment. You can start school in November. You could just start school whenever. It's like a miracle all of a sudden. He's eligible. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:59 In the middle of October. Apparently school doesn't start until Thanksgiving. So then he goes player by player and there were specials and spectacular. Are all the players special this year? So far, everyone, I think we're bad in a thousand. How many are beautiful? All of them, and they're all extraordinary. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:21 But if you, he did say good things about Cam Williams. And even though he's new and still getting used to his level, he says he's taking coaching well, you know, so he'll get frustrated a little bit at times. But he's like him when he's seen him. And that Marino, there's been a lot of buzz about him looking good too. Now, am I correct, we have a Cam Williams. Yes. But we're also recruiting to Cam Williams.
Starting point is 00:14:40 There's another Cam. We could have double Cam Williams down the road. do Cam Williams on the team. I think I'll have to double check. I think the other Cam is a C. Cam Williams and then we have a K Cam Williams. Okay. But yes, there is a high school Cam Williams that's highly ranked as well.
Starting point is 00:14:55 And we're going after him, right? Yeah, yeah, 2026 class. All that could be from. An entire team of the same name. All Cam Williams. Yes, nothing at Cam's. Yes, I say if you have a Cam Williams, you get another one. I'll tell you a stat that blew my mind.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Guess who the starting point guard is for Villanova this year? Don't know. You know. So don't say, Shannon, guess who the starting point guard for Villanope? I'm going to say a name that's going to blow your mind. I have no idea who. Devin Askew.
Starting point is 00:15:24 How can he still be, have eligibility? Devin Askew is projected to be the starting point guard. There's no way. I'm dead serious. He's still playing college basketball. He is projected to be. Devin Askew played during the Truman administration. And he is supposed to be the starting point guard for Villanova. He's at a different school every year too.
Starting point is 00:15:41 It seems like what is at school? He played here during the COVID year, didn't he? Yeah, Texas for a while. The year after, not the one that ended short, but the following year. I mean, that is amazing to me that he is still in college basketball. It's amazing to me that he's a division one point guard. His teammate Cam Fletcher is also still bouncing around. Cam Fletcher is still playing?
Starting point is 00:16:02 He's nearby. Is he at Xavier or he was at Xavier? He's been hard to keep up with too. Yeah, so he's been in Kentucky, Texas, California, Long Beach State, and now Villanova. Fifteen. Unbelievable. And this is what, his sixth year? And he's rejected as the starter. How is he eligible?
Starting point is 00:16:17 I don't know. I really don't know. He's been, it's been a different team every season. Wow. Anyway, 859-28027. That was your Gilded Age Long John Silver's Devin-Ask You first segment. Text Machine is 772-745254. People are suggesting Nicholasville places to eat.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Do you know Copper River Grill? That's good. Is it good? What makes it so good? It's kind of like a cracker barrel type feel. Got some country cooking in there. Why did you say that so excited? Because I like it.
Starting point is 00:16:48 It's kind of like a cracker barrel type. Yeah. You get to like chicken with white gravy on it, stuff like that. I love that kind of stuff. Is it Nicholasville where the canes has the, was it ducks? Or what is it? Oh, the geese. The geese.
Starting point is 00:17:01 The guy at that cane. Yeah, we shouldn't. Someone did. But we can go check on that too. We'll take a break. We'll be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed the game.
Starting point is 00:17:12 This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. Starting point is 00:18:07 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:18:26 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid
Starting point is 00:18:41 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Starting point is 00:19:04 The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports. and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going from the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.
Starting point is 00:19:28 It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel like you don't feel like. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ledecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their. face light up and smile. That means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning.
Starting point is 00:19:58 It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back.
Starting point is 00:20:28 Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tughey Sports Radio. Apparently it was an hour wait through the drive-thru at Long John Silver last night in Nicholsville. You got to want it. What is... Wow. Everybody wants those, one of those little crunchy things to get. Oh, the cracklings. Oh, those are the best.
Starting point is 00:21:26 Those are good. Long John Silver has to be horrible for you, though, right? It's got to be like the fattiest thing. A lot of fried. I mean, it's got to be. I don't know, but it can't be good for you. I wouldn't think so. Speaking of that, can I brag on myself just a second?
Starting point is 00:21:40 I had a physically yesterday and I had to get all. the blood work and all that and did all that. They said they've only, this place I go has only had records for me the last 10 years, said I'm the healthiest I've been in 10 years. Lowest like cholesterol, 18 pounds less than I weighed January of 20, 24. So I just got to, you know. That's great for somebody who's pushing 60. Congratulations.
Starting point is 00:22:00 So you need to slow down. So yes, I may have readers now, but you know what? You're in good condition. That's okay. He was like, he also said, he goes, now with all, with your cholesterol. and everything, he was like, you're doing amazing. He goes, you have a 1.7% chance of a heart attack in the next 10 years.
Starting point is 00:22:20 And he paused and he smiled and I was like, is that good or bad? Oh, he's like, it's great. He was like, that's a very low number for your age. But I still felt like Shannon, one in one point seven. You're saying there's a chance. That's like one in 50. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:37 But then that means Ryan, you must be really high. I'm telling you the best thing. like, that's great. And I go, all right. Yeah. Best thing you do is you do all that walking, man. If we just did what you do walking, we'd all be a lot healthier. Yeah. It's hot now. Today's going to be smoking hot. Yeah, it's very hot. One person writes, Matt, I bet you don't know this. In Lexington, they still do coming out balls. They're called debutante's balls, and there's one in Lexington almost every weekend.
Starting point is 00:23:08 What? This is complete news to me. balls? They still, they have debutatons balls here? No, you don't. That's for like high school kids. No, I mean, I just want to see, I'm not going as a, he's a married man. I just want to see what this event's like. So where are there debutante? I don't know. Who's doing it? Do you know anybody that's debaetoned? I've been in this town for 30 years. This is the first I'm hearing about it. There's debutante bowls every week. Not balls, balls. Every week in Lexington. Yeah, I don't think you can order the bowl. Shannon, did you, have you spent, knew they did that? I've never heard of it.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Nope. Didn't know a thing about it. Do they do that in Louisville then? If they do it in Lexington? Or is it just a Lexington thing? There's a thing they have. I had a couple friends who did it that's like, it's like a high, I can't remember what it's called. What's the thing?
Starting point is 00:23:54 Like women, they get into it when they're like in high school or college and they like, it's like a high society thing. It's called something. It's called like, somebody will know. But it's, it felt like a cult when it was described to me. And it's like, I think, for rich women to do... Okay. Somebody will know. I don't want to...
Starting point is 00:24:15 I want to say it's like civil society, but that's what I'm in. It's like, anyway, 859-2-0-0. Oh, you're becoming a rich woman. You're watching Gild's age and... You want a gown? I'm starting to sip tea. Let's go to Jake. Go ahead, Jake.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Hey, the other day I was listening to you guys mentioned, or you were talking about the teams that had a chance to win the title, the basketball teams that had a chance to win the title. Yes. And you didn't mention one team. that I feel always gets overlooked. I just wanted to know if you thought that COVID team could have won the title. No, I don't. I mean, I think that COVID team was very good, but I also think people are overlooking.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Like, it's one of those, I think we were coming on at the right time. But we didn't win the SEC that year, I don't think. Did we? I don't know. I think they did. They may be tied for first. Because quickly was player of the year and Richards was second. It was.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Richard was right behind him. I mean, you got to remember that's the tournament. What, Dayton was going to be the number one. overall seed with Obie Topping. We probably would have been in a two or three seed. So, I mean, would we have had a shot? Yes. Would I say, I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:25:22 I look back and I say, if you're one of the four best teams going in the tournament, you really have a chance to win. And I go back through my lifetime and say, we were one of the four best teams definitively in 93. Oh, yeah. With Mashburn and those guys. 95. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:39 We lost Carolina, but I think by the end of the year, were as good as anybody. 96, we won, 97. I actually don't think we were one of the four best teams in 98, but we won it. We really weren't. You know, 03. Yeah, for sure. 04.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Yeah. Right, with number one overall scene. 05. Yeah. When sparks, the ball bounces on the rim. Michigan State. Then I think you have to skip forward to 10, 12, 15, 17. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:11 And then 11 and 14, we made a run to where we had a shot, but I don't know if we were one of the four best teams those years. No, I think that's very fair. Then I think we could have been one of the four best teams that first Oscar year if Cal had played the right people. And obviously we lost to St. Peter, so it's hard to make that argument. Does anybody agree or disagree with any of those? No, I was just going to add the COVID year. I looked up that they were eighth in the country when the season ended, and they did win the SEC. but as we talked about yesterday, that's right when the Hagan's thing happened.
Starting point is 00:26:45 And we didn't know if he was going to be playing. If you had Hagan's on the team at his best, all good, I think they were a contender. But we had just had the Hagan's thing the week before. At the end of this year, will we put Kentucky on that list? I've now given like nine times, ten times in my lifetime that I think they've been one of the four best teams. Do you think I don't think last year we were one of the four best. I think we were one of the 10 or 12 best, but I don't think we were one of the four best. Do you think at the end of this year we could be one of the four best?
Starting point is 00:27:17 At this moment right now, I don't think I'm ready to say that, but I think they could be by the end of the year. I mean, I think they're definitely top 10, top eight, maybe even. Are they top four? I don't know if I'm there yet. I think to get to where it's top four, for me for Kentucky, if you're going to say this is a national championship contender, J. Billis always says you've got to have three dudes. Right. Okay, you got to have three dudes and then you've got to have supporting pieces.
Starting point is 00:27:43 I think we've got the supporting piece. I think O'Reigh is one of those dudes. Okay? I think Jalen Lowe is one of those dudes if he reaches his potential. Now, if he doesn't, I think that's, to me, the season comes down to how good that kid is. Let's just assume he reaches it. Now you've got to tell me who's the third dude. There's a lot of contenders.
Starting point is 00:28:06 Yeah, there are really are. is it a contender? You know, Colin Chandler could be a contender. Aberdeen, Diabate, you can think of a lot of contenders. But I got to get somebody that I know is three. I feel good we have two. So my question is to get from where I think we're a top 10 team to a top four or five,
Starting point is 00:28:30 who is that third guy and somebody will have to do it. And Drew, I don't know who that is, but somebody will have to. For me, they need two guys to be good, and one of them can be your third. And it's if Quatens hits his potential and comes back healthy, and if Low pans out at point guard, I think they're going to be very good. I think they're still good if those guys are not spectacular. But if they really pan out, they're going to be nasty. I agree.
Starting point is 00:28:54 It's hard for me to put Quaintens, though, as one of the three when he's not even playing right now. But if he's won, he's got the talent. We just have to have a third dude, and we'll find out who that's going to be. We'll take a break. 5, 9, 280, 2287. a couple open lines KSR. Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. A little slow on the phone today.
Starting point is 00:29:13 859-2-80-22-87. They were blowing up yesterday. I mean, you can ask anything questions. I would love to, I was in a mood to, you know, since I talked so much the last three days, I was like, hey, I'm going to talk to callers, but you got a call or else I will just have to keep blagging. Junior League, that's what I was trying to think of.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Yeah. And then there's something called Catillion. Never heard that. I think, but Junior League is what I was thinking. Uh-huh. And I think they do like festivals. Yeah. Or pageants.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Okay. Am I wrong about that? This is not something I'm well-versed in. I mean, we're not really high. I mean, I am now because of guilted age. Like, I'm kind of in high society now. But generally speaking, I'm not. 859-2802287.
Starting point is 00:29:56 I want to play something before I go to the phones. Mark Stoops was on ESPN Sunday morning, or not, excuse me, not Sunday morning. ESPN's morning show unsportsmanlike. Right. Okay. And I guess they had him on there a day or so ago. And they asked him, you may have seen the SMU coach. The SMU coach who was like said, you know, why does everybody act like the SEC so good?
Starting point is 00:30:23 Only six teams have ever won the title since 1964 from the SEC. I'm SMU. I'm in the ACC. We're just as good. he was like so I mean bring it on or something is what he said and Mark Stoops was asked about it and I got to say
Starting point is 00:30:40 Shannon this is the Mark Stoops I like this is the Mark Stoops I like that's a little saucy a little coming at you this was Mark Stoops answer when this when that was played to him on ESPN if he wants to take a crack at it come on strap it on
Starting point is 00:30:56 and come come try because I could promise you it's not easy so I can tell you you, you know, I think anybody with any common sense can look at college football and look at our conference and know what it's all about. I mean, there's nobody interested in going back. Everybody's pushing the investment from the schools, the recruiting, the coaching, you name it. I mean, do we really have to defend ourselves at this point? It's just ridiculous to try to compare them top to bottom to the SEC. That's just a ridiculous quote.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Look at that. I kind of love that. If he wants to come, play the beginning of it again. What's his line? Because I love it. If he wants to take a crack at it, come on,
Starting point is 00:31:42 strap it on. Look at that. If he wants to take a crack at it, come strap it on, Shannon. Now that, that's a marked. That's a motivated Mark. Stoops right there,
Starting point is 00:31:53 come strap it on if you want a crack at it. That sounds very motivated. And grateful that he's in the SEC, too. Very grateful all up my dad. He was. I loved it. I mean, that is, I don't know if we can back up that talk, but I love, that's the Mark Stoops I love, sort of being a little swaggy. It's kind of uncharacteristic of him to comment on another coach like that. Usually that's something he'd say, you know, I'm focused on my team, my locker room, not worried about what other people are doing. But he jumped right in on that one. I like hearing that. In a time when he's saying he doesn't want to make headlines, he's putting some good stuff out there.
Starting point is 00:32:24 And he said it on national radio. I mean, he didn't just say it here. He says that on ESPN, which means the SMU coach is going to hear that. That's the Mark Stoops I heard down at the SEC Media Days that got me a little fired up and anxious but for the season to start because he has a chip on his shoulder and I love it. That's when he's at his best right there when he feels like he's being disrespectful. Like he sat in front of you that one year and said, we're just getting started, bro. I want to hear that kind of stuff from Stoops. I like, and I kind of wish we played SMU because I'd like him to go, strap it. Strap it on. Strap it on. Take a crack at it. Come take a crack at it and strap it on.
Starting point is 00:32:59 If he wants to take a crack at it, come on, strap it on. That's a great drop right there. It is. We could use that a lot. Strap it on. If he wants to take a crack at it, come strap it on. Although there's a lot going on. Talk about the helmet, right?
Starting point is 00:33:13 Interesting language. But nevertheless. Chin strap. Yeah, he was talking about a chim strap. Get a mark. I like that. When the ESPN producer sent me that, it made me happy. All right, Steve, go ahead, Steve.
Starting point is 00:33:26 I wonder why people like me, you're conservative, why they are afraid to look at both sides of an issue. It's almost as afraid, you know, be wrong. What are we referring to? Are we talking sports here? What are we talking about? Oh, no, no. I was taught on Jerry, I should have proved, okay, cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias. You know, I'm talking about behavioral
Starting point is 00:33:57 And why people refuse to attack their own beliefs, which I do all the time. Steve, with a little behavioral psychology here on a Thursday morning, Drew. Yeah, I didn't know where you go with that, but I want to hear more of it. Yes. What were the words you used there? Cognitive distance and what's dissonance and what was the other one? Cognitive distance and confirmation bias. We tend to look at things that happened yesterday, more so.
Starting point is 00:34:26 a few weeks. I agree with you. I agree with you. And I have to say, Steve, when you started that call, I didn't know where we were going. I appreciate the call. I'm not even sure what the topic was.
Starting point is 00:34:43 I just like he called in. He's got his thesaurus and he's ready to go. I can assure you, in my 58 years of living, I have never used those words one time in my life. I looked over you. That hamster was run on the wheel in your brain pretty fast.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Do you know what cognitive dissonance means? No, cognitive is your, are your thoughts, but I have no idea what dissidence means. Okay. Dissence. No idea. So it's like, it's like what makes it, I don't know, when you hold sort of conflicting beliefs and then you try to kind of diso, you don't know how to handle that. It's cognitive, like I have one belief and I also have the other. So there's a cognitive dissonance in how you deal with that.
Starting point is 00:35:25 I would just call that brain fog for me. it's another scientific term. Yeah. They go, they go and you know what confirmation bias is. Confirmation is you're proving of something. So bias is one thing. You favor something over another.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Yeah. So it's a confirmation bias would be like, I believe X. So I'm only going to go read things that confirm what I believe. If there's something out there that doesn't confirm what I believe, I will ignore it and only deal with the things I believe. It's kind of, I think, a big problem with society now. You only want to read the things that you agree with.
Starting point is 00:36:02 So what was Steve saying? I don't know. But I do know. I know that those are what those words mean. And I like that Steve said him. Shannon, I'm not sure what that had to do with me watching Gilded age. But nevertheless, I did enjoy it. If I just stepped into psychology 101 class. Yeah, that's exactly right. Eric, go ahead, Eric. Matt, I'm going to use your platform for more than sharing sports. I'm going to use it to try to get out to touch a customer I've got out there. We're talking long John Silver's today. I've been trying to reach their chief technology officer for probably year now,
Starting point is 00:36:38 trying to provide some value to the restaurant, their IT stack. And I'm just hoping he's going to be listening. And, uh, 10, if you're out there, check your LinkedIn. I'm here to make a deal. Okay, wait a minute, hang on. Uh, in the mat. I appreciate to call. What is going on here? When I did say I wanted calls, I'm not trying to like set up the technology for Long John Silver's.
Starting point is 00:37:02 It was more just like I was wanting to have conversations with people, not trying to get you a job via LinkedIn to do Long John Silver's technology. Kenneth, right? He should check us LinkedIn, though. He should. There's no excuse for that, Kenneth. I now, by the way, I told you, I got LinkedIn. I've started adding all these people. Like I had people.
Starting point is 00:37:22 I had people all the time. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, I remember you. Let's connect. And now I'm connected with all of these people. But now I don't know anything to do with it. Like I have it. I'm now connected.
Starting point is 00:37:36 But now what? Can you poke? Do you like? Are they like pictures of kids? People's children going to school on there? I don't think in a business setting you're supposed to poke. Okay. I don't think there's any poking.
Starting point is 00:37:48 You know, people will post. I just got a raise at the Hamilton an insurance company and it feels a little braggy to me Shannon you know like look at me I just got a promotion so I don't feel comfortable posting that so I just I really am not doing anything with it I made a profile like 12 years ago in fact I think it says I still work for tennis channel as my employer because it's around that era you know we were tennis experts but I got on there one time Mario's on there well it was like I had a friend or whatever it's like is Kathy good at PowerPoint. I'm like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:25 I guess, yeah. So it's like, you endorse Kathy's PowerPoint. Billy's on there and Mario's on there. But you're not, Shannon. You're on there, but you haven't done any. I don't even know my log in. Yeah. I have one. I'm on there. Yeah. After you mentioned it the other day, I got like all these requests wanting to, what do you call? Link up or whatever it's called. That was a different site. We're really bad at having a real job.
Starting point is 00:38:48 That was your Twitter DMs. And by the way, those are not real people. Really? I know you think they find you. I know you think they find you sexy. That cam is not actually live. Don't click that. Cam is not live. And she doesn't want to exchange contact information.
Starting point is 00:39:07 But she thinks I'm funny and someone to hang out with. Nothing says summer like long days, clutch plays and firing off a few bets on draft kings. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Looks like I'm not the only person that watches the Gilded Age. Apparently, Nick Roush, Adam Luckett, and Tyler Thompson all watch it.
Starting point is 00:44:02 Who knew we could have a KSR plus Gilded Age group chat. I had no idea. The phone's blowing up with Gilded Age watchers in the company. Now I feel like I'm the odd one in the bunch. The text machine. One person writes, Matt, I'm 37-year-old male like you. I'm embarrassed. I like it, but it is kind of good.
Starting point is 00:44:21 and it's hard to know who the good people are and the bad ones. Yeah, there's no, there's no great people. There's also one person on it who's a terrible actress, and I think that makes it good. You have all these, like, famous people in it. You have apparently a lot of people from Broadway who've won Tonys. And then there's this one woman, I'm not trying to, I'm not going to say which one, Merrill Streep's daughter,
Starting point is 00:44:41 that's really not a good actress, and she's gotten cast in one of the main roles. And she gets better. But the first couple episodes, I'm like, Did they get her from a high school theater? Maybe a little nepotism in Hollywood there. She gets better. But like it's clear she's on there because she's a famous person's part of Merrill Streep's daughter.
Starting point is 00:45:00 And like it's, what was that? I'm not, I'm not going to say who is. You sneeze there? But she's just not as good as the other people in the cast. But she gets better. Okay. She gets better. Yeah, I was looking at it.
Starting point is 00:45:13 It looks like big names saw like Merrill Streep's daughters in there. I don't know if she's in it or not. Okay. I just, you know. Oh, that's cool. It's a big get for them. I want to give you just a couple, a piece of good news. Antonio Reeves signs a new NBA deal, signs with the Charlotte Hornets,
Starting point is 00:45:32 and it gets a two-way contract. They cut somebody to keep him, so he'll probably, good chance he'll make the roster, and Antonio will get a chance to get some run. Dude, we've said it from the beginning. He does the one thing that they want you to do in the NBA, and that's to be a knock-down shooter. He can do that. And the chances he's gotten, he's kind of taking advantage of it.
Starting point is 00:45:50 He played in the summer league. He was the most efficient player on their team and yet only made five threes. So if I told you he would have had a great summer league, it only made five threes. He went 29 of 29 from the free throw line. Which think about that. That means how many fouls he drew going to the basket? That's a lot for a guy. He wasn't a kind of player earlier.
Starting point is 00:46:10 He doesn't play like that or didn't when he was at Kentucky. I'm pretty confident. No one, even within the NBA watched more summer league than me. And I watched just about every second Antonio Reeves had the ball. He was one of the standouts on his team and really the whole summer. I figured he'd get another deal. He played for New Orleans in summer and then Charlotte came in and swooped him up. I thought he might stay in New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:46:29 But there was no doubt he was getting an opportunity with how he played. I think he was like second team all summer league too. Yeah, he was great. Which, you know. Good for him, man. Who knew they did all summer league teams, Shannon? Not me. Kyle Philopowski, the Duke guys.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Con Cinnipple was the MVP, Kyle Philopowski, and then Cooper Flats. they had like three of the top six players. Kobe Bray had played really well too in the summer league. A lot of our other guys didn't get a lot of run, but those, he played really well. Jacob Toppins another one when I was watching him. I'm like, man, this guy's hit another gear. I wish we had some of this at Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:47:02 Are you worried about Rob Dillingham? I mean, they gave him the ball a lot and he didn't have a great. He did not shoot it well. If he didn't lead the summer and assist, he was close. But I think he shot 20-something percent from the field. I'm worried. I'm a little worried about him because there was another dude picked in his class at Terrence Shannon who played really
Starting point is 00:47:20 well and I'm kind of one you know they said one of those guys is going to be in their rotation if he gets passed by a second round pick in his own draft nothing was going in for him he was so fun to watch though the way he can just get where he wants he's so tiny out there the basketball looks like it's too big for his hands but he was just such a great facilitator I know he had a lot of assist but he had some flashy passes where the guys didn't finish the Houston Rockets by the way said that reed Shepard will be in the rotation next year so like reed's getting his By the way, I bought Rob Dillingham's shoes. He did.
Starting point is 00:47:53 I love his logo. I just feel like, you know, I owe it to it. Sure. Just get the, if I'm going to have all these shoes, I got to have the UK guys' shoes. The one game I saw Reed play and he dominated. He had like 23, 25 points or something. Reed has a shoe too, right? Yeah, he does.
Starting point is 00:48:10 Why are you doing that? Does he have a shoe or not? It's not a, what's the different? It has his name on it, though, right? Well, then what's the difference between a signature shoe and a different shoe with your name on it? Broni's got his signature shoes. That's what Mario's going to say. He only buy Bronny's shoes.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Eric, go ahead, Eric. Hey, Matt, first time caller. Who was? I'm from down here in southern Indiana, Rockford area. And I was wondering, you know, there's a lot of Kentucky fans down here if y'all ever consider doing a remote around here. Well, we do one every year. In Owensboro right across the river.
Starting point is 00:48:45 Oh, you set in Southern Indiana next to Owensboro. Okay. So you're talking about, like, close to Evansville? Yes. Yeah, no, we've done one before, but it's been a long time. So I'll see what we can do. I think you're right. There are a ton of fans.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Be nice to cross the river and get over there. All right. I appreciate the call. We did Henderson a couple times many years ago, which is right after the room. We're touring the South this year. So we're going to go. I'm looking at Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, those states leading up.
Starting point is 00:49:22 to the game in Atlanta. Because we've really not done those states. So Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, we're going to come in December, and people can figure out where they'd like us to go, but I think that'll be fun. I think it'll be a good little trip for us. Do something different.
Starting point is 00:49:35 Go down in the south. And you're going to be happy. It's not as much driving. Amen. Yeah. And packing. It's not snow boots and big jackets. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Nick. Go ahead, Nick. Hey, guys. I know there's been a lot of talks about ruining the NCAA tournament by expanding it by 79, 75 games. and obviously they would just be doing that for financial gains. Instead of that, what about making the final four in the championship? That's two out of three if they had to change it.
Starting point is 00:50:05 I love it. I appreciate the call. I think having especially the championship game be two out of three or the final four, I think would be great. I don't think you can do that in the early rounds. I think people want that ability for the one and done upset. But I do think a best two out of three if you had had Houston and Florida. Florida last year or Kentucky and
Starting point is 00:50:26 Wisconsin in 2015. If you went two out of three and you could have a multiple game thing, A, you'd probably get the best team as the winner, but B, you would also get some excitement as people wanted to watch those games. Yeah, I think you know, the best team being the winner, if my team were to lose, I think I could swallow it easier if we lost
Starting point is 00:50:42 twice, but well, they were just the better team. It would get away from the heartbreak of losing to a team you didn't think you should have lost to. And it would be a good combination of doing the, okay, it's one and done to get to final four. You can still get knocked out. But then when you get to the final four, the best team of those four is going to win. Like last year, that would have been a great final four to have best two out of three.
Starting point is 00:51:02 If you had had Auburn play Houston two out of three, Duke play Florida best two out of three or whatever. That would have been an awesome thing. You know, college baseball does it when they get to the final two team. They play two out of three. And I love it. I love the fact they're playing three games. You got to win two out of three. Maybe you haven't won off night.
Starting point is 00:51:16 You can still come back and win the next night. I love the idea. I think it would be, I mean, I don't know. I say they'll never do it. But I think it would make financial sense. to do, wouldn't it? It would be highly rated. Those games would be very highly rated. And if you, when you get a matchup that gets people going, people, I mean, that was it,
Starting point is 00:51:36 again, I was out of the country, but Duke lost to Florida, right? Yeah. If you had had that Duke, Florida, be two out of three, those games would have been massively. With Cooper flag. And the way Duke lost choking at the end. Yeah. Them getting a second. The next game would have been. Rating would probably be even higher.
Starting point is 00:51:51 Yeah. To me, that would be a number. No-brainer. Just think in history, trying to think. I mean, Kentucky, Wisconsin, two out of three. What if Kentucky beats Wisconsin and you could have had Kentucky Duke two out of three for the title? You're not, you're telling me those would not been all-time ratings. Yep, it would have been. Or Duke Carolina the year they played each other. Two out of three, Duke Carolina? Yeah, almost every year of the matchup, something you'd want more. It would be absolutely awesome. So I'm with you. I think that would be a great thing to do.
