Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
Starting point is 00:01:21 for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamous and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last?
Starting point is 00:01:54 Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, Shannon, the dude up at Fort Thomas Highlands High School in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. Sitting outside, Drew, on the sidewalk in front of the school.
Starting point is 00:03:23 There's a little raining when we first got here, but the sun has come out because it is September 22nd. and we're talking to the number 22 man himself, Taden Lorenzen, son of Jared Lorenzen, also wore number 22. Man, I'm telling you, it's so cool for me to see how you've grown up and not just be this football guy, but to be a great young man. You know, they said we've known you since you were a little guy. He always called you little man. You know, little man's got a tournament this weekend. Little man's got a football game this weekend, so I know he's super proud when he sees the person you become.
Starting point is 00:03:57 the football player but the person you're becoming. Yeah, my main goal in life is to act exactly like he did towards me at least, because he was always the most humble guy possible. He never said anything bad unless I did something wrong. I deserve it. I think he had a, he evenly distributed his being humble and telling people when he's right. So, I don't know. I think being his son, I have to live up to a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:34 You feel that? Yeah, I do. But I think as long as I be myself, I can carry that on as much as possible. So do you feel that just because you're here at Highlands? He was such a star here. He won't number 22. You know, you're number 22. So, I mean, do you feel that every time you walk on that football field out there?
Starting point is 00:04:53 Yeah, it's definitely a feeling for sure. in the moment not so much but like when I'm sitting here talking to you guys I start getting that feeling in the game there's so much adrenaline and I can't think about anything except for the game
Starting point is 00:05:07 but I want to hear more about this Holland's experience we kind of got up against a hard break there you were saying great things about the school here and then I had some friends text in that are local they're telling me like people
Starting point is 00:05:19 the tailgate in front yards and like it's not just in the stadium the whole town is pretty much shuts down for Friday nights? Yeah, the whole town loves Friday nights. Actually right over there in that parking lot is our tailgate parking lot, and they walk in here from the games.
Starting point is 00:05:34 They all line up on the Broadway, or the Avenue of Champions, and we walk down into the game. It's just that feeling Friday night lights. We're about to play a game, and it gets everybody ready to play. And it's not just here when you guys go on the road. And like when your dad was playing, him and Derek Smith were at their prime.
Starting point is 00:05:52 It was like a traveling circus, man. every time they grow into town, everybody wanted to see those two guys play. Yeah, like we traveled to Cooper and our fans. Our community is there immediately. They're tailgating there. They find a place. And our student section is really good. It's probably top five in the state for sure.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Like how we traveled to Boyle County also. They were all there. That's two and a half hours away just for a football game. And that's how much they love it here. and that's the spirit we bring to Kentucky football. What about some of your stuff like, you know, I got to know him so well with our football podcast, just about his pregame rituals and things?
Starting point is 00:06:33 Do you have like a pregame meal you stick to or any routine or any superstitions that you could share with us? I feel like every time I have a superstition, I get off of it anyway. So I just do whatever until the game. I have no always pregame this superstition. Not of that.
Starting point is 00:06:53 None of that. I literally just get ready and go play a game. Just get locked in. Did you grow up living and dying with Kentucky like he did? I mean, he would live and die with every – long after his career was over, he's living and dying with every play. After they beat Florida, he called in the postgame show and teared up, started crying.
Starting point is 00:07:10 He was so happy they'd finally beat Florida. Are you that emotional? Do you get into it that much? Not as much as he did. Obviously, I don't think anybody gets into it as much as he did. I'm definitely a UK fan for him. sure but there's there's a line between die hard and the UK fan and I don't know if I'm gonna cross that line he crossed it he absolutely crossed it he was die hard all the way
Starting point is 00:07:36 do you feel a connection to the Giants since he want to ring there do you support them I know it's a little different with them not being locally yeah if I see them on TV or something like that I'll root for him but there's really not a team that I'm die hard for in the NFL at least like actually college either I don't really really like die hard anybody but yeah I'm a UK fan and I do like the Giants do you ever get his Super Bowl ring out I mean the dude's got a Super Bowl ring yeah I've seen it I've seen it a few times but we keep it locked away and safe because they don't trust me with it I don't trust myself with it we asked him that one time after he got it and what is
Starting point is 00:08:11 what you do with you go man I'm not not wearing that or out somewhere I don't want to lose it I want somebody stealing I'm got it locked up safe where I know exactly where it is at all times yeah that's it I don't trust myself either what about state championship rings. I actually have seen one of his state championship rings. We were out to dinner with one of his teammates from high school and he brought it out and that's the only
Starting point is 00:08:32 time I've ever seen it. Yeah. They're pretty cool to see. They're very cool. Some of your coaches and teachers here already told us before you came down that it's not just the look and the number. You have the personality and a little bit of sense of humor too because Jared would always make us laugh. Are you kind of, I hate
Starting point is 00:08:49 say cutting up in the locker room because you're serious but do you kind of have that big personality too around your teammates? Definitely do, yeah. I have a lot of friends, and we joke around a lot, and I like to have a good time with my friends. That's bigger than anything for me is having a good time with my friends, outside of school, getting away from everything, and they help a lot with how I act in the real world.
Starting point is 00:09:15 You know, we mentioned you watch his mixtape all the time. What's your favorite play that he did? Because there's so many. What's the one that you think is your favorite play? I know everybody wants me to say the behind the back throw, or behind the head throw against Georgia. But my favorite play is probably when they were playing Louisville, and he had like a 40-something-yard run.
Starting point is 00:09:38 You know that was his first snap from scrimmage? Yeah, it was his first snap. And he threw the ball up in the air if they tackled him. Dude, I got goosebumps right now when you're saying that. It's either that one. or I think he was maybe against Mississippi State. He was running left, and he ran out of bounds and did the safe thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:56 That was pretty cool, too. Where are you going? You're going to miss a hell of the game when everyone was leaving and going to the big overtimes. We keep focusing on him, and you have a lot of football left to play. But do you have a favorite highlight? I've already seen a few this year online. So do you have a favorite moment of yours or a play that, even if it's middle school, is there something that stands out where you were having a lot of fun out there?
Starting point is 00:10:16 Any over-the-head throws from you? No, no, not yet. Your coach got a reaction on that behind you there. I don't think he's ready for those. Favorite play ever or favorite play this year? Either one, just a play that stands out where you thought, you know, that? Okay, I'll go to my favorite play ever is the Northern Kentucky Football League Championship against the bandits. And I roll right and I'm throwing it to my running back, but I'm getting tackled.
Starting point is 00:10:45 And he breaks a few tackles. I completed the pass. He ran 40 yards for a touchdown. And my dad, first time I ever seen my dad run, ever. And he ran onto the field and, like, gave me a chest bump, and I fell on my back, and it was a good memory for sure. So do they, does Coach Spire back here, does he let you throw the ball, or you just run at the ball all the time?
Starting point is 00:11:10 He lets me throw it, but I think the team succeeds if we're running it, and if we're running it every play, and we're not getting stopped. I think we're just going to keep running the ball until they stop it. Because you were a quarterback a lot growing up. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:11:25 I've always had an arm, but I think when I run the ball, I don't know. It's just like it's worked and we haven't changed anything. There's no reason to it if it's working. What I've seen of you running the ball, you see more of the I'm going to run through you type than just try. I'm definitely not going to run around anybody. There you go. Your goal on run against Douglas and many others I've seen online. Like old dad, it took several people to try to bring you down.
Starting point is 00:11:54 Yeah, again, I'm definitely not running around anybody. So it's either a stiff arm or I'm going to run through you. That's all I can try and do. What do you do when you score touchdown? You got a touchdown dance or a celebration? The first time I've ever done a touchdown dance was my first touchdown against Ryle, and I'm probably never doing it again. But a bunch of people were telling me to do it
Starting point is 00:12:14 because it was one of these TikTok things or whatever. Yeah, I did it just to make everybody happy. And that was it. I was actually about to ask a question about Derek Smith, who just walked up. But, I mean, he and Jared were, you know, hand in hand coming up through here. Do you have, like, a version of a Derek? Do you have, like, a childhood friend where you are just playing every sport? Sounds like your property.
Starting point is 00:12:32 You might have 10 of them not want to name drop them, but is there – do you have some special connections like that one? Probably his nephew. Aidan Duncan is up there for sure. me and Gabe Williams have a pretty good connection on the field. Probably, yeah, the third one would probably be, Kail Harris. He's number 13 and was a receiver.
Starting point is 00:12:57 We've always been best friends, but not to name job, but those are my three really good friends, Chase Jacob also, but there's so many. I don't want to start naming anybody out. Well, listen, man, whether you know it or not, you got an entire state pulling for you, all the Big Blue Nation, watching you, pulling for you, wishing you, nothing but the best on the football field and in life.
Starting point is 00:13:22 So I hope at some point you can feel the love that they have for you because they loved your dad. Yeah, having that feeling on me just means the world to me. And all I can do is make me happy and embrace it because it's not going to go away until I die. So it's great having the state behind me And Like wherever I go
Starting point is 00:13:48 In the state's behind me It's great And coach if we could Maybe you get up big in a game Can we draw up? It could be on the go line Maybe let him throw a left-handed touchdown It doesn't have to go for just a couple yards Maybe just set one up
Starting point is 00:14:02 There was a game you have to be left-handed Was it a freshman game? Oh you have thrown left-handed Yeah it was a freshman game Oh, there we are No doubt you are Jared Derenzen's son. There's something magical about that name and that number on the back of a highland jersey.
Starting point is 00:14:15 And dude, we're proud of you. Keep grinding. Keep playing good and we'll keep an eye on you. And you got great things ahead of you, I know, down the road. Thank you so much. Thank you, brother. Appreciate you. All right.

Starting point is 00:15:48 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's just.

It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. Starting point is 00:17:28 Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive?
Starting point is 00:18:07 The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. We just finished our interview with Taden Lorenzen. We had to let him go because it's lunchtime. Yeah. The boy didn't want to miss lunchtime. That's right. Growing teenage boy. That's right. And he had to get his class. Jared never missed the class. So joining us now, guy walked up where we're doing the interview. We said
Starting point is 00:19:49 when Jared Lorenzen and Derek Smith were here at Fort Thomas Highlands, it was must-see football, must-see basketball. You guys are like a traveling road show, Derek. Derek Smith joins us now. But like I told Taden, something magical about that name, Lorenzen, and that number 22 up here at Fort Thomas Highlands. No question about it. You know, again, I was here for the game Friday night, and my nephew plays on the team as well, so I try to come back for some games, and geez, it's just, it's amazing to watch him play and see, you know, I just remember growing up again. Jared and I grew up from literally when we were like five years old playing football,
Starting point is 00:20:27 baseball, basketball together, and so I got an up close and personal look at Jared. and everything that he did. And so then I'm standing in the stands watching, you know, and his mannerisms, everything is just a replica of Jared. When he gets tired, he holds his hands the same way on his hips. You know, and Jared would be tired. The ball was in his hands for every play. Half of his touchdowns, he didn't even celebrate.
Starting point is 00:20:50 You know what I mean? Because he was working so hard. And that happened Friday night. I mean, I'm looking at my dad, and I'm like, he didn't even celebrate the touchdown because it's just he's a workhorse, you know? He understands what the assignment is. And he's just, he's so much like his father. It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:21:05 And it really is. It's a blessing for me. And I have a lot of gratitude to kind of experience that whole thing and then be able to come back here for the game and watch him do it. You say that about the hands on the hip. I can picture him doing that. Me too. Yep.
Starting point is 00:21:17 We asked Taden this. And I'm sure you've known Taden Bryson's who was born, I assume. But was there a moment when he was young before you got to where you're just used to seeing a little Jared out there where you're like, wait a minute. This is a spitting image of his dad. Yeah. Pee-wee football. Jared and I had a golf outing once, and he came to pick me up.
Starting point is 00:21:37 We were playing at a Highlands basketball golf outing. He came to pick me up, and we came to the game first for a little bit before we ran out. And yeah, I mean, at that moment, I was just like, oh, my God, this guy is. Jeez, Louise, I mean, it just makes sense. You know, I mean, I would say, Jared, he would say there was this God-given ability that I was given, you know, and I'm just glad that I was able to go out and do these things. And I think it's been passed to Taden, no question about it. You know, he kind of talked about he feels that.
Starting point is 00:22:07 He feels that Lorenzen mystique, even when he puts on that jersey. Oh, absolutely. I mean, look at this, right? I mean, he's just, you know, Jared and I didn't have KSR come up in radio stations with us. So, you know, it's like his father laid the groundwork, and his father did all this work and did so many great stuff in the community in Fort Thomas and in Kentucky. And so I think it's only appropriate that Tadden gets to kind of swim in those riches a little bit, you know, because that's what you do for as a parent, right?
Starting point is 00:22:37 You want to set something up and hand it off to your child and allow them to flourish, and I think that's what he's doing. So, you know, I think he'd be very thankful for that. We're focusing a lot on Jared, but, you know, you had quite the athletic career right beside him, just over here at Highlands. Same thing I said to Taden, but now Highlands is kind of getting back, considered it top 10 and maybe top five in some places around the state. trying to get back to that winning tradition and get some trophies. Do you feel some proud, especially with you having a nephew on the team, that it's got your nephew, Taden, and then kind of trying to get Hollins back to where it was?
Starting point is 00:23:09 Absolutely. All the old guys, all the old teammates, we all came Friday night, and we were hanging out watching, and, you know, it was the atmosphere. Everything just sort of took us back, you know, and, God, I can't believe it was 25 years ago. Sometimes I have a hard time dealing with that. But, yes, you know, we're always, supportive of anything we can do for Highlands and for the community here and obviously for the
Starting point is 00:23:34 program and we want football and basketball. You know, my nephew played on the state championship basketball team. So my nephew now, Aidan is a senior right now. His older brother, Austin, was a member of the state championship basketball team. So, you know, the guys were all down and we were up. We went down there and, you know, so we were like, you guys took away our mantle of the best high. We still feel like we might be the best Highlands football team ever. But I don't think we can say we're the best island's basketball team, another because we were one step short of that state championship. You guys get to the semifinals or the finals?
Starting point is 00:24:04 We lost in the finals my sophomore year to Louisville, Eastern, and then Scott County beat us in an epic final four game, semi-final game, my junior year, and then my senior year we got upset in the first round. Oh. We were getting a tour of the Hall of Fame there, and to your point, I even took this photo of you and Jared have your jerseys in, Ross and a few others have your jerseys framed,
Starting point is 00:24:28 in the basketball, Jim, but the Boy State champion banner is much bigger. They're pretty proud of that. Rightfully so. Rightfully so. Yeah, I think our best banner up there was just ninth region champions. You know, we wore that honor. But, yeah, we, you know, and by the way, that night was amazing. I was honored when Joe's parent or when Jared's parents asked me to give the speech for Jared
Starting point is 00:24:53 for that night on the Hall of Fame, you know, and it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. you know, it was still sort of raw in the moment, but I'm really glad I did it. At first, I'm like, I don't think I can do it. And then when I did it, I'm like, I'm glad I did that, you know, because just, like I said, you know, here we are 25 years and I think back all the time. I'm like, man, it was really the glory days for us. You know, God, we just, we lived in the moment and we were able to do so many great things. And, you know, and everybody thinks about us with football and basketball, but we had a lot of fun playing
Starting point is 00:25:24 in baseball, too. We were really good at baseball. we decided our junior year not to play baseball and the baseball coach here just about wanted to fight us I never will forget that but we just you know it was just such an amazing journey through all that stuff and like I said I just
Starting point is 00:25:40 you know I set up in the stands I'm here right now and I just look back with gratitude of just being able to be a part of it and get to know Jared and be his friend for so long and you know now I could see a son do the same thing and so hopefully one day I'll see my son do the same thing You know, when you guys, I said this earlier, when you and Jared were playing, you'd go on the road, place was packed. You were like a traveling road show. Everybody wanted to come see Jared Lorenzen and Derek Smith play football, basketball, whatever it was.
Starting point is 00:26:07 And I tried to tell that to Taden. I said, you don't understand that the entire state, Big Blue Nation, got your back. They love you because of what your dad, the joy he brought them. Taden said he kind of understands it, but do you think he fully grasp the love that this state has for? the Lorenzen name? You know, are you able to do that at 17? You know what I mean? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:30 I think you probably start to get an understanding of the moment and the gravity of it all. But I also think, like, he's just got to be a kid. He's got to be 17 years old, and he's got to have fun with his teammates, and he's got to be able to be Taden, you know, and I think he wears the badge for, you know, his father's legacy really well. But I also would just say, you know, like, I think he really, I think it's really important probably for him to make his own legacy, you know, and for him to do his own thing. Good point.
Starting point is 00:26:58 And so I think it's really a mixture of both for me with Taden is, you know, I mean, it's a spitting image, you know, when he puts his pads on and he goes out and play. Like I said, his mannerisms, I'm just, I'm like, I'm watching Jared all over. And, but, you know, he's creating his own aura. And I think that's going to be a traveling road show. It does it help that his father laid the groundwork? Yes. I do believe that if he wasn't Jared's son, he'd still have a road show because he's that good. You and Jared obviously went on to Kentucky together.
Starting point is 00:27:31 I assume you're keeping up with teams. Talk a little current ball, how we feel. I got South Carolina coming up. I was there last weekend. I was there in the old Miss game, I mean, so two weeks ago. Yeah, I think they're doing great. As a former player, I see things, and I'm just like, oh, my God, you know, just line up sometimes. Into the first half.
Starting point is 00:27:52 And so, you know, there are times where I get a little frustrated as a former player because you remember those things and you remember how important it was, you know, and then when it kind of goes the other way. But then I'm like, the fan comes right back into me, you know, and they do something really well, and I'm celebrating like everybody else, you know, and I'm like, this is how it felt when they watched us play, you know? But, yeah, I think the South Carolina game is going to be so important. It is just crucial.
Starting point is 00:28:16 There's no reason why we can't win that game. No reason. You got to love how they're throwing to the tight end more now. Oh, yeah. Yes. You know, Willie Rodriguez is a couple. By the way, I said he was from Highlands.
Starting point is 00:28:27 No, it's okay. Tech machine lit up. He is not from Highlands. He is from Covington Catholic. I don't think we're going to get you out of here a lot for saying that. Whoa. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:36 So the AD at Coventon Catholic is a friend of mine. And so we were on a business trip once. And so I got to talk to Willie and just congratulated him on, you know, commit in the Kentucky. and as a former tight end, I was like, man, you know, it's just special to see great tight ends, keep going at Kentucky. So, yeah, I mean, you know, I think, like I said, I just, I don't see how, you know, we cannot be a little bit more competitive this year.
Starting point is 00:29:02 I think the Old Miss game was tough. But again, I would have thought that Tulane would have given Old Miss a little bit better of a run and they didn't. So, you know, I'm talking to a buddy of mine and I'm like, man, maybe we are better than I thought, you know, like, I mean, you kind of want to think like, nah, but then I'm like, I think we are as good as these guys. I think we should be able to win these games. But it just, in this stuff, it just comes down to doing the one or two things right.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Dude, appreciate you. Derek Smith, Highlands Hall of Famer. We're right back more from Fort Thomas Highlands High School and we come back. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio live at Fort Thomas Highlands High School today.
Starting point is 00:29:45 A little surprise pop-up show we're doing up here. and a visit with Taden Lorenzen as we did in the first hour. Not sure to start with home financing. We'll start with Stockton Mortgage. Their team makes it easy to understand your options and move forward with the plan. And you want to be in that new home before the holidays? Well, now's the time to act.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Stockton Mortgage is ready to help you move quickly and confidently. Learn more at Stockton.com. NMLS 8259 Equal Housing Lender, NMLS Consumer Access.org. The mortgage industry is kind of shifting a little bit. Rates went down a little bit, but I hope that reflects some more sales. still the inventory's down, so it's kind of a tough market all around.
Starting point is 00:30:20 I thought it was a good time to buy. It's always a good time to buy. It's always a good time to buy. Now, since Matt's not here, we do need to carry the Reds banner, I guess, for him. Somehow, Shannon, the Reds have got themselves right in the thick of the wild card race, swept the Cubs while the Mets have completely fallen apart, and now going into the final games. What are there, five or six games left? I think there's six games left.
Starting point is 00:30:43 The Reds have the Pirates at home for three, and then on the road with Milwaukee. and then the Mets have the Cubs who the Reds just swept. And I think it's at Miami to finish up for the Mets. Wow. So anything could happen here, but. But if it ended right now, they're in because they've got the tiebreaker with the Mets and the Marlins. They own the tiebreaker with both of them. This was so predictable.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Fall of L.A. I remember you can go back and play the tape. When they did that West Coast swing, he's over. We're the worst. It's over, boys. And they still weren't that far behind. knew they were going to turn it around the moment he got to South Africa. And I've actually, because of the NFL show, we did that last night.
Starting point is 00:31:23 Everyone, subscribed to NFL Cover Zero. Yes. A new episode dropped this morning. But, you know, I was with Matt through the screen for a couple hours last night. You know, we actually have show prep on that. Wow. What's that line? We get together an hour before and talk over.
Starting point is 00:31:36 But in doing that, I've gotten to talk to Matt a lot about a South Africa trip. And, A, he is very excited about the Reds. He even said he might try to call in today to brag to the show. However, the safari starts today. Oh, it does. Today's the big day. My man's a little nervous about repelling with his nine women. But he also, and this, I'm not spoiling any stories here,
Starting point is 00:31:56 he tells the full story on the NFL podcast. But Matt is down there without a phone. I saw that. That's got to be the worst thing for that kid. Worst thing possible. He'll be out there without a phone. Leave aside just the fact that Matt's phone is glued to his hand. I would not want to be in another country alone without a phone.
Starting point is 00:32:16 No access to anybody. Yeah, he said it's just too expensive to get one there, so he's going to handle it when he gets back. He's like, you can go have a nice dinner here for $4. But an iPhone, they're like three times there. So I think he was going to try to find a repair shop, wouldn't have much luck. But he's starting his safari with the non-random women today. The Reds are on fire, and he doesn't have his cell phone. That man has to be losing his mind.
Starting point is 00:32:37 How does he communicate with you guys? How did he do the podcast last night? I heart sent an iPad that's rigged up for us to do our show. So I don't even know how he got that one text. text out to me and Mario, but we basically did just text from it. Yeah, I guess so. Yeah, through the iPad, but uh, uh, you know, we just
Starting point is 00:32:54 were talking to him over the screen, but he's like, I guess he saw, uh, some, some bamboos just walking around. I guess there's this city, they just walk on sidewalks like humans. And he's telling me about it, he's like, I wanted to get a video, but I'm just walking around without a phone. If he, when he's a ride, goes down on the front desk and that's to call it, call it cab, but he tells the story of how that happened on the show and a few others. But I, I,
Starting point is 00:33:13 I feel like I'm, I'm still in Matt's time. Everybody's just wondering where he is and he's gone and I got to talk to him for several hours last night. I feel of all the people in the world that can't handle life without a telephone, it's Matt Jones. Yeah. It'd be difficult just being down there and you're alone in different area, but he was having fun. He said that the non-women, he had met them that day. I think there was a welcome party. He said they're pretty quiet, but they're locked in and today he starts repelling and playing Jamongi and all the things he's going to do. Well, good luck to him. You guys got your cover zero podcast came out. Was it this morning?
Starting point is 00:33:47 Yeah, they do some post stuff. I don't know the exact time it went up, but it's up. It is up now. If it's not, then we have problems, but it's supposed to be up. So go check it out. All right, 859-2802-287. That's the Clark's Publish Out Phone number. If you want to call and get on board, I do need to ask you guys one question.
Starting point is 00:34:03 I was on an airplane ride out there to Nebraska and back. I do have a question about airplane etiquette. Oh, this is one of my favorite topics. See, we've talked about this before with babies crying and things. but I have a legit, serious question about airplane etiquette. I'm in the middle seat. Sorry. I'm in between two guys.
Starting point is 00:34:23 One guy is probably in his 70s. The other guy's probably late 20s. They hook onto the Wi-Fi, on American Island, you go to look on the Wi-Fi, and they're on their phone non-stop. I mean, both of them, non-stop. Is it bad form, or is it rude for me to take a peek? Like, what the heck are they doing on their phone? I'm sitting right beside them.
Starting point is 00:34:44 Is that a unwritten rule? You can't look at what the other dude's doing on his phone? No, that's fine. I mean, are you, like, leaning over his shoulder and, like, getting in his photo album, or you're just glancing? It's at nighttime, so the phone is lit up. Yeah, of course. And I can easily see what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:35:03 No, I mean, let's all admit, we are nosy people. Even if we don't want to be, we can't help ourselves, especially if you're on a plane. You're locked in, you're just sitting there. You can only watch that little map of where you are with the plane going by for so long. So, of course, if someone's got their phones out, I mean, maybe don't read every text they're sending or go through their private stuff, if you want to, whatever.
Starting point is 00:35:22 But, no, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Well, the 70-year-old dude is Wheeling and Dealing, Shannon crystals and painted rocks. Oh. Like, you know, Jim Stones, and he's selling them on eBay. And he's got, like, 50 of them. And Shannon, they're like $120 for a rock. Oh, I know. I've bought a lot of those $120 rocks.
Starting point is 00:35:43 good for him. There's a market for that and people are actually willing to pay for it. Did you ever get the urge to be like, hey man, I couldn't help but notice, you know. Can I buy that? The bright light. Well, no, ask him about it. Maybe getting the rock business.
Starting point is 00:35:53 I felt like it was rude. Like I shouldn't be spying on his business. Now, the other guy, the other side of the young guy, he's on his phone nonstop. And he looks kind of like Billy, but you can tell he's nervous. He's touching his face. He's doing his hair. He's moving around. He's on Draft Kings.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Yeah, the crown is yours. And he is going through all the late football games and just living. and dying with everything. You could tell. I was watching. He would go from game to game, live bet during the game. I mean, it was,
Starting point is 00:36:20 he was, he was, he needs to call 1-800 gambler. See, see, I would have made a best friend. I have this thing. My wife makes fun of me all the time. I'll go to the airport and I leave with five new friends that they met at the bar on the flight. If I'd been in a seat and the guy next to me
Starting point is 00:36:35 I was on draft kings, we're talking the whole flight and betting together. He was way into it. I mean, like, way into it. Coming back from, Tahoe I set by this guy and I've never seen anything like it it was a four-hour flight the Wi-Fi wasn't working but he had the his phone so close to his face and instead of scrolling with his fingers he scrolled with his nose no he didn't have any problems like it
Starting point is 00:36:57 wasn't like a you know any kind of handicap issue he's doing everything else but he he had he it was so close to his face I couldn't even believe he could read it I'm like you were going to kill your eyeballs but he would you know go down the page with his nose and I've never seen anything like that to keep you from looking to what he's looking at no he didn't know I was he was kind of the caddy corner to me a little bit, but I don't know. Have you ever seen someone scroll through Twitter with their nose? No. But no, to answer your point, that's, I mean, there's some things that are debatable.
Starting point is 00:37:23 I know people argue over, can you put your seat back and, you know, fighting over armrest. Those are some hot topics at airports, but just glancing over the phone. We're all nosy. But I felt like a peeping Tom. I'm peeping at what they're looking at and what they're doing on their phone, but it was, what are you, I'm stuck in the middle. It's right there in front of me. Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I want to struck up a conversation.
Starting point is 00:37:43 You mentioned the other one. I'm in the middle seat. The armrest kind of, I should have first ride a refusal on the arm. I agree. I'm in the middle seat. I try to work with people on that one, but sometimes they just think it's theirs. And you've got to let them know. You don't say anything, but you do an aggressive I'm here too with your elbow or your knee,
Starting point is 00:38:01 whatever it is. Like, I'm willing to fight for this spot if you need to. Well, I took kind of the upper half of the armrest, and they took the lower half of the armrest, because I felt like I'm in the middle. I get first ride of refusal. I thought you all would be sitting in first class with your family and those reclining seats. You tell me you're in the middle with strangers? We had flights from H.E. double hockey sticks.
Starting point is 00:38:22 It was awful. Did you say on the air, off the air, what time you got home? Did you already say that? I've not said that yet. I walked into my house at 3 o'clock this morning. 3 o'clock this morning because we landed in Cincinnati like at 1, but I had to take Josiah to his dorm. Because you know he's going to go to class this morning, right? It's a big class guy, huge class guy.
Starting point is 00:38:39 So we've got to work that out. All right. That makes him worse. You were in Cincinnati. If not for needing to get back to drop him, he could have stayed at a hotel and come over here to Highlands this morning. Yeah, I go to bed at three. I had to come right back up here, be back up here at 9 this morning. Well, I don't think you were being a creep looking at phones.
Starting point is 00:38:54 That's just what people do. All right, Shannon says we got a phone call. Who we got, Shannon? Let's go to Steve. Steve, go ahead, Steve. What's up, guys? How are you, Steve? Hey, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:39:11 What I wanted to call in about? Yeah. Brad White. seems to me like he's a great recruiter and he's great at developing players, but it's play calling the suspect. With the amount of NFL talent we've had and that we have potentially now, we should be a top five defense consistently, and I think it's because he's play calling.
Starting point is 00:39:40 What you guys think about that, I know everybody seems to love him, but he interviews for other jobs all the time and never gets one. So I want to get your guys opinion on that. All right, Steve, appreciate it. You know, I thought the defense, first two games were like lights out. Took a step back in the Eastern Michigan game. I don't know why. I don't know if it was play calling.
Starting point is 00:39:58 I don't know if it was effort. I don't know what the... They were very thin in the secondary. I mean, that's not an excuse against Eastern Michigan. You're in the SEC, but that is one thing that held them back a little bit. They played some freshman that they never played before. I mean, I legitimately covered the team, and I'd never heard of one of the guys that was in there making plays. So have you seen enough of the defense to give you confidence going into South Carolina? I think so.
Starting point is 00:40:17 And, you know, Brad White, a lot of fans don't like the bend, don't break, which he's a little more aggressive, but his overall body work's been good enough that I'm not going to be too critical of Brad White, even though I have a few nitpicky complaints. There is a little bit of like you're watching Drew Phillips and Carrington Valentine on his guys on NFL Sunday starting for these teams. But overall, I think Brad White's a good man. He's a good coach in the locker room. Wish he'd, you know, maybe blitz a little more, maybe get a little more aggressive, but that's just his style of play.
Starting point is 00:40:45 And it's actually worked for Kentucky many times, you know, sometimes against the Tennessee's and the fast-paced offenses that can really throw it around. it doesn't work out. But overall, I think he's done a good job. Got itchy in my throat. Yeah, sorry. Sorry, when we keep you up and I can absolutely do that. You know, Matt said this, and I don't think it's that wrong, but when Stoops leaves, whenever that is, if Mitch Barnhart is still in charge, I think Brad White will be high on Mitch Barnhart's list of people he wants to seriously consider. What does Summerall's name go down a little bit after they got waxed by Ole Miss? You know, we as Kentucky fans, we root for Tulane, and, you know, I guess Mario put that in the parlay. Yes.
Starting point is 00:41:26 But if he had beaten Ole Miss, we might have had to start thinking that he's not an option here, because there's going to be a lot of open jobs. Florida's going to be open. Yeah, he would have. He's already high on all coaching searches as it is. But if he had beaten Ole Miss in Oxford, he might have gotten out of Kentucky's reach. So that might have been a good win if people are really wanting that name whenever that time comes. All right, we'll take our break.
Starting point is 00:41:45 Come back, our final segment. Final break, final segment here, 859, 280. 2287. Starting point is 00:43:06 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WMBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.
Starting point is 00:44:12 It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts for wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect.
Starting point is 00:44:59 We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. When Jacob met Levin this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive?
Starting point is 00:45:34 The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Yeah, on the A Vision Glass text machine, Drew, somebody texted in and we should have asked Taden if he believed they actually landed on the moon or not, because Jared was a big conspiracy theorist that that never happened.
Starting point is 00:46:07 I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that, because I'm the one that would poke Jared and get him to go off on those rants on the football podcast. He was convinced. They never landed on the moon. It was done in a studio. He's convinced. I might have to run in the cafeteria and find him and I'll ask him off there because we need to know that before we leave. Who's this segment sponsored by Drew? Oh, our friends at court physical therapy.
Starting point is 00:46:24 When it comes to your physical health, you want a physical therapist you can trust, and that's court physical therapy. For over 35 years, court has been a leader in orthopedic and sports physical therapy throughout Kentucky, providing care to athletes and sports radio personalities like me. Yes. And weekend warriors alike. The physical therapist from court can help you too. With over 700, or not 700, over 70 convenient locations through Kentucky, access to expert care is easier than ever.
Starting point is 00:46:46 a-o-r-r-t-com to request an appointment today to see why court is the best in rehab for yourself before we get out of here we do we do want to talk a little basketball because there's been some some news come out yeah uh today they can start practicing more pope even tweeted they had an early morning practice i believe they took like three days off uh between the summer workouts and then today it goes from uh eight hours to 20 a week so they're they're ramping up over there with uh instruction and coaching all everybody out there at once and then i i was kind of watching it as we were setting it up because it went out, but Pope put a short highlight clip out. It got like Malachi
Starting point is 00:47:19 Morenoe dunking on people. Nice. Trent and Noah hitting the corner three. It's only about a minute clip, but I know we're excited about football ramping back up this week, but the basketball team is really getting in the lab too. Pope said they have another practice this afternoon, so a two a day to start the week. Well, that's why I gave them three days off.
Starting point is 00:47:35 It's about their legs are about to get sore. A lot of practice, a lot of time on the court, kind of about the next starting today. Yeah, and it was great. I caught a little bit of Phil of 68 eight last week, but you know, Jack Pilgrims had some insider notes. They're bringing people into practices, Jay Kyle Mann from the ringer, and the reviews were getting are quite encouraging. A lot of, a lot of, oh, look at this team. Depth is the word you keep hearing, like, very, very, very high floor and a very high ceiling.
Starting point is 00:48:01 We'll see how the finished product is, but, you know, I don't know exactly what Jeff and Rob said on this show, but they were great. People were saying national contenders, if it all pans out, that it's looking good. Now, our mutual friend of ours has a little intel. He went to practice. The practice he was at those. Not only was O way out, Lowe was also out. You know, Lowe probably just getting them ready for practice, real practice starting.
Starting point is 00:48:23 So Lowe was out, Otega was out, and JQ was out. So who do you think with the starting five on the White team, knowing those guys were out? Who would you have predicted that day was on the starting five on the white team? So Lowe's, I'm just going to go, because I've got to split them up. I'll say Colin Chandler. No. Aberdeen? Aberdeen was the point guard.
Starting point is 00:48:43 Yeah, I think he's going to be the backup. Jasper Johnson? No. Cam Williams. No. Cam Williams was the three. Okay. Well, I was just naming anyone starting.
Starting point is 00:48:53 I don't know. Just give it to me. Trent Noah was the two. He was the two? Okay. I would have been one of my last guesses. Me too. And then Diabate, the four, and Brandon Garrison, the five.
Starting point is 00:49:03 That was the five they went with that day. And I think, you know, that's just patching a roster together while these guys are out early. but I thought Noah this would be a year where he's going to have to sit a little bit for next year because of the depth. He's going to make them play him. Like, I mean, they included him in the short club today. Pope even said in the tweet, Mount Mamba, he said something about him. So, I mean, he is going to force them to put him on the court just with all the hard work and hitting open shots. I ask him about Yelovich, and he said second team didn't impress me, but Jack said he was good when he saw it.
Starting point is 00:49:34 Maybe he just had a bad day. Yeah, and he's just getting here. You know, he's got a lot to get used to, so I'm not going to be judging him. still a little farther down the road, but I think highly of him too. And piggyback what you said about Chandler and said he was good, just very solid leader of the blue team. He's going to get minutes too. Him and Trent both are going to just make it impossible to not get them on the floor, I feel like. I expect a big jump from Chandler.
Starting point is 00:49:55 One of the things I saw out of practices is this time last year wasn't a lot of talk of NBA talent on the team. How many times we say it? That's true. He did good in the portal, but is there a star? Is there an NBA talent? This year, multiple options out there can be NBA guys. And since you missed it, like Goodman and Rob Doster were both like saying Jaden Quayton could be the best player. Of course.
Starting point is 00:50:19 He's healthy. He's not just the best player. He's the highest draft pick. He's the guy. And they love him as a person.
