Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. This is not Matt Jones. This is Drew Franklin. You're welcome. I'm with Ryan Lemon and special guest, Dennis Johnson, joining us at KS Bar and Grill. We're excited to have Dennis. Ryan, you booked a big guest today. I'm very, very proud of you. You've even said you're going to tell some Stories?
Starting point is 00:03:25 I've got some great Dennis Johnson's stories I want to tell. Great story. Oh, man. I looked at your schedule, Woodford County schedule. You're off this week. We are. I thought, man, this is a perfect time to get you in to talk a little UK football, talk a little Jasper Johnson basketball.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Wofo. We'll give your jacket a little shout out. Absolutely. So you look good, man. You look good. Broward of you. Appreciate it, man. Preach you all have me on.
Starting point is 00:03:45 You guys do a good job. I try to listen when I can. And so you guys have a lot of fans in Wilford County and the State, man. Well, Jasper came in one day this summer and did a great job. Yeah. Oh, you came in. You were that day. You were that day, too.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Yeah, it's really good. Eric, I'm excited to have him here. We should, like, break it up. Well, maybe we'll, do you want to go football first, basketball first? Johnson Legacy first. You can get these stories out of the way. Wo-fos killing it early in their season. Which way you want to go?
Starting point is 00:04:09 Or I could start with telling you about Don Franklin. How about I do that? Maybe we'll do that while you think about the direction you want to lead with. It's fourth quarter, you need options, and there's 28 stores and over 6,000 vehicles across the bluegrass. This makes absolutely no sense. Across the bluegrass trucks. What? Let's start all over.
Starting point is 00:04:25 Don Franklin Auto, big sponsors of the show that you can go there with locations all across the state. This read really makes no sense. With power train protection, 10 years, unlimited miles, that's how you finish strong coverage on certified pre-owned makes and models only at Don Franklin Auto. You've got parts that need replacing. Keep rolling with confidence. Don Franklin's five-year parts warranty on qualifying parts. Keep you on the road. Who wrote this?
Starting point is 00:04:49 Not on the sidelines. Just get to Don Franklin Auto for GMC, Hyundai, Neeson. Nissan, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, Kia, Mitsubishi, Ford, Lincoln, Genesis, Cadillac, and Toyota. Score big at your local Don Franklin dealership or steal your way over to Don Franklin Auto.com. Right before you talk to Jasper, Shannon and I were just having a conversation off the air about some of these ad reads. And they got to start, A, putting spaces in words. Maybe just type and grammatically correct sentences. I might even tweet this one out.
Starting point is 00:05:16 There's random numbers in there that make no sense. Like, it's, yeah, it's not easy reading these things. It's barely English. All right, anyway, we do love Don Franklin. Sorry I butchered that Ed Reed, but we're in the family. Don, I apologize. Don Franklin Auto.com. You all know the drill.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Check them out. Always being good to KSR. We have loving remotes there. We also love having Dennis Johnson. Did you all pick football or basketball? Really, I've got three good dinner. You have the four. You have the four.
Starting point is 00:05:42 Let's tell a story and then do a football segment. And then tell a story, do a basketball segment, then tell a story and do the Johnson legacy segment. I love it. I love it. This is your bit. Okay. I'm going to go in the order I think they happened. The first great Johnson story, a lot of people in Kentucky know this.
Starting point is 00:05:56 My man played varsity football when he was in the second grade. True story. He's in the second grade. His brother Derek's in the third grade, and they're playing high school football at Herodzburg High School. And I heard this one great story. Somebody in your locker with the Arizona Cardinals, like they challenge you. Like there's no way. He said, I have a second grade son.
Starting point is 00:06:19 There's no way he could have played high school football and he's in the second grade. No, it was funny, man, once the guys found out, and that was the year Emmett and now those came. And so once they found out, we'll probably go out to practice one day, and all the guys, like, suck around, was like, dude, this can't be true. And M&M, they was like, man, they're like, no, it's absolutely true. So they did some research, and they were like, it was like a topic of discussion for the whole year. It was like, every time it seemed like, dog, it ain't no way. I'm like, oh, it's a way.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Remember my brother rode our bikes, practice started. You know, it's when you had triple sessions. Practice started at 6.01 a.m. My dad would leave at 4 to get down there. He's always an early risals. so me and my brother ride our bikes with our pads on. And if we were late, we had to run. And so we had to do triple sessions, no going to the city pool.
Starting point is 00:06:58 We had practice again. And then we had another practice. And so, yeah, yeah, that was the life in the Johnson household as young kids. But we didn't know any different. So we just, we went with it. I was like collecting Ninja Turtles and stuff. Yeah. No cartoons for us.
Starting point is 00:07:11 None of that. What was it like for the other guys who were much older than you? And say you just put them on their butt. Like, how just demoralizing was that to get hit by a second grader? Well, for the most part, was the other way around. do put us up against the best guys, they would knock our heads off. And my dad was like, get up and don't be soft and be tougher and stuff. So we kind of had to go to the heart where he wouldn't put us up against the guys
Starting point is 00:07:30 who probably we could have matched up against. Most of the time, we're the scout team guys versus the first team guys. And we had to do everything we could have survived. But, you know, my dad had no, he didn't take any shorts, and it was always be tougher, be stronger, be better, don't be, you know, soft. And so that's kind of how we grew up. So because of you, the KHSAA implemented what I've always called the Dennis and Derek Johnson rule, where you can't play varsity football
Starting point is 00:07:52 until you get in high school. Right, absolutely. They made the rule because of you guys. And there's some kids, you know, we have kids. Man, eighth grade's going to play. I'm like, guys, I'm sorry. We just, you know, because of my father. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Kids who are now 6-7 and 6-7. You've seen all those videos. They've got to play middle school until they get in high school in the state of Kentucky. So that's the first Dennis Johnson story. Play when he was in the second grade for Harrisburg High School.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Not that you were just out there, and this was a little more after second grade, but I mean, you were getting a lot of attention. at a young age. Leave aside just out there hitting people. What was that like having a spotlight on you when you're still truly just a kid? Well, it was funny. What was Coach Smith's name?
Starting point is 00:08:29 He's coach DB in the UK. He came to recruit some of our guys. Rick Smith. Rick Smith. We had a ton of guys. Coach is out there. And I remember him going in before the game, talking to my day. I was like, we like that kid.
Starting point is 00:08:40 I was tall. He was like, oh, yeah, he's like in fourth grade. What's going on? And I'm young at the time. So I'm like, no, no. I'm like, I'm too young to go to college. Like, yeah, what are you, what are your plans next year, big guy? I'm like, they go to fifth grade.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Go to elementary school. Maybe go to the park, go to Kings Island. You know what I'm like? Ride my bike to practice. That's it. So it was funny, but now we had a good time with it. Like I said, we were, my brother and I had a chance to be in the spotlight for a long time.
Starting point is 00:09:06 So it was kind of became kind of, you know, common thread out of the while. But I always tell you with this now. My dad was so hard on us. You remember ESPN Scholastics. I remember they followed us around for like a whole week. And I'm like, why are they falling us around? We're not that good because my dad was just so hard.
Starting point is 00:09:21 If you made 20 tackles, it was the three tackles you didn't make or the three blocks you did make, but he would harp on. So even for a long time, I'm like, I don't know, all these people are, like, falling us from because we're not really like, we're not that good, you know what I'm saying? Like, we're not that good. And the first time I kind of knew he took us to a camp somewhere. It might have been in New York or something, like one camp, me, Craig, all of us,
Starting point is 00:09:39 and we all got, like, top kids in camp. And everybody was like, where are you guys from? Harrisburg, I was like, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It was like, no, Harrisburg. Kentucky's like, no, there is no, like, football in Kentucky. Like, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, by this time, I'm, you know, seventh eighth grade. I'm like, all these guys, you know, you start hearing about ratings, and this guys aren't the 10th best O-Lyman, and we're, like, killing these guys. I'm like, oh, this is easy, and we've been doing this for a long time.
Starting point is 00:10:02 But it was so funny, all those kids was like, you guys got to be from Pennsylvania. Like, Pennsylvania has good high school football, but not like Kentucky. Harrisburg. I'm like, no, Harrisburg, Kentucky. It was funny. So, no, had a lot of good stories growing up with football. I mean, the football was obviously covered, and it's a, you know, legend around here, but were you willing, your brother just competitive and everything? Did y'all just always fighting or something in the backyard or whatever it was?
Starting point is 00:10:25 It's just always head-to-head. And I tell parents that I tell my parents were so great because we basketball in the kitchen and we always slapping our hands on the walls, having to get the walls painted. But my mom and dad let us do it. We, me and my brother fought and in the back yard. We always had a lot of people over, Craig and Julius and every J-Paul, all those guys were, and everything was competitive. We ping-ponged table downstairs. We had a big contra video game, the real big video game. Then we had another part of the basement.
Starting point is 00:10:49 You've been down, there was a whole basketball court with a mini hoop. And so it was some competitive times. People were getting knocking to the walls. People were fighting. It was a lot of that growing up. But it made us who we were, though. He just mentioned five guys. Dennis Johnson, Derek Johnson, Julius Yeast, Jay Parks, Craig Yeast, all played major
Starting point is 00:11:08 Division I football out of Harrisburg High School. Jason Dunn before them. done. When the NFL, I mean, it's amazing that school at that time, you guys produced five major division one football players. It's crazy. No, some of those Friday nights, man, I remember forget. This is probably eight, nine years ago. I met a guy at some game or something.
Starting point is 00:11:25 He said, man, I'm going to tell you this story, but if you ever told anybody, I would say you're alive. He's like, my grandson was playing in a playoff football game, whatever around the place. But I came to Herzberg because you guys had Philip, former Bobby Bell and all of them. You know, he should fly the helicopter's in. He's like, I just wanted to see them. those guys, so I miss my grandson's game to come and see you guys play. So if you ever tell those story, I never forget the guy telling my story. So it was some legendary stories in times of Harrisburg back in those days.
Starting point is 00:11:52 You mentioned people not knowing Harrisburg. You all certainly put it on the map. And then after your high school career, even during your high school career, you know, we all know you end up Kentucky, but some big time schools coming to visit, huh? No, I was good. You know, my final were Miami, Notre Dame, I think Colorado was in her at the time, Florida. So I had a whole bunch of games. Those guys, I remember coming to the basketball games and my dad having a section all for all those guys. It was crazy times because you think about
Starting point is 00:12:18 a little community, 7,000 people and all these guys constantly. I mean, it was just a madhouse for a year, I would say, you know, for those guys. But it was good for our community. Got to see a lot of people, but it was definitely fun. So when Steve Spreier comes to visit, you know, I love Herodzberg, but it might be a little eye-opening to him from being down there in-game. What's a Steve Spurier visit? Like, is he in-and-out? He's spending the night at a bed and breakfast? Is he going out to eat? I think he was in and out.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Price stayed in Lexington, but he came to the house. Him and Charlie Strong was with him. Oh, yeah. So him and Charlie come in and we talk for four or five hours and hang out and they eat and all that stuff. And then I guess they hit the bypass and go to Lexington and spend the night and get out of Dodge. Yeah. I got to tell him my second, Dennis Johnson's story. Tell them all.
Starting point is 00:13:01 The night before he makes it, he's going to commit on the signing day, make the big announcement in his high school gym. the night before is when Lexington had the famous dusting of snow that snowed a foot of snow overnight and his announcement in Hairsburg is the next morning so Gary Johnson and I got on the car got in the car the snow is not covered as has not been removed from the road you can't see if you're on the road or not we're watching the guardware rail on the side of the road
Starting point is 00:13:29 to make sure we're still in concrete they closed the bluegrass parkway while we were on the bluegrass parkway but we're out we're on already. So we kept going like 10 miles an hour and get to Harrisburg. I remember telling Gary Johnson, if that big SOB does not pick Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:13:45 I'm going to smack him when I get there. I'm going to tell you a great story. So the night before we played the South Laurel, I forgot the head coach, I signed him a few weeks ago. So I'm taking, in this packed house, everybody with Julius and myself, we got a good team, and so it's packed in there. And I'm taking the bottom of this guy grabs my jersey.
Starting point is 00:14:02 He's like, this is during a basketball game. I need to know where you're going so bad. I'll give you $500. I'm like, well, And I'm a kid. I'm like throwing the ball like this guy's going to attack me. And then after the game, so many people surround me, the bus leaves me. And so I have to go in coaches off, and he calls my dad because he had one of those big old saved by the bell phones. Like you left one of your players.
Starting point is 00:14:24 It was like, who? Like your son. You know what I had to come back in? Because I couldn't get away. Like the bus had already gone. But that was a crazy story. And it took us, I don't know, three or four hours to get home. And then the next morning we woke up and it was a madhouse.
Starting point is 00:14:35 I remember you saying that morning when you made the commitment. And I believed you, you said, you really didn't know until you woke up that morning. And then when your dad came in, Alvis comes in to get you up, you goes, Dad, where's my Kentucky had? I was a huge Miami fan, and my favorite team was always Notre Dame. And so I always had probably like a champion today. And so I had like Edron James on my visit at Miami, so we had a great time. I had Javon Kirch. I mean, I had all the tops of the tops guys.
Starting point is 00:15:01 And so it was a tough decision because I wanted to go to one of those two schools. And so just in my heart of heart, man, I was a Kentucky. you threw and through and that was that's what made the decision. I can only imagine that visit to the U. probably got to see the library and where they keep all the books and meet your tuners. How close realistically were you to picking one of those other schools that you love so much?
Starting point is 00:15:20 Was Ryan ever in jeopardy of risking his life to go to a commitment ceremony? I would have body slammed you if you didn't pick Kentucky that point? That's why I picked Kentucky. So Ryan Lemon, right, we're a good friend. So I didn't want to get body slammed by Ryan. So you care it was. You care of it was. But no, I did.
Starting point is 00:15:34 I mean, Bush Davis was a coach at a, at Miami, and so went down there. Actually went down there a few times. It was an 18-old kid coming from Harrisburg, getting to see all that and hanging out with all those celebrities and went to the club with Barbara Franks and all those guys and went to Luke's club. I mean, we was all over the place, man, and so everybody knew who you were. It was very tempting.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Yeah, it's amazing Kentucky. We still got that commitment. We'll take a break. We want to hear more about Kentucky football. You there in your days and then the current state, and of course, we've got to hear the expectations of Jasper practice ramped up yesterday. So we want to hear a little bit about that. too it's drew Ryan and dennis johnson or k sbar we'll be right back last night a blown call

And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Starting point is 00:19:27 Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world.

I went back and looked at it. I mean, it's a lot going on in there. I feel bad. Am I going to get fired, Ryan? No. I mean, I think they put it in AI and let AI spit it out. They know they don't prove it. And then they just send it to you. It's a lot going on in there. A lot going on in there.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Shout out Don Franklin. Also, shout out Dennis Johnson. We're going to keep this moving. You'll stay on football a little bit. You look like you parked up with some more stories there. So I'm just going to pass it off to you again, Ryan. Okay, so we've got it from Herodzburg to U.K. Yeah, let's just do the timeline. Okay. He's at U.K., and there's this great story where Dennis has mentioned his dad, Alvis. Elvis is one of the most great, maybe one of the greatest football coaches ever in this state ever, and very well respected.
Starting point is 00:21:47 And so you guys, I believe you're on the road at Florida. Yes. And it's game day, and you guys are stopped at the hotel room. Your dad says, come into my room. So you and Derek go to the hotel room, and he started doing some coaching in the hotel room. and uses your mom as the offensive lineman. Stand up, Rosetta, and he's showing you what to do, get around an offensive lineman. Right.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Putting your hands on your mama. Well, not like that, but just showing what to do. She was a football tackling dummy for about 10 minutes, and he had no regard. You know, he was in football mode, and once he's in football mode, he's in, my dad was, and that people know a lot of, a few sides of my dad, but he's probably one of the most competitive people, and he doesn't like Errin. He wants you to be successful every single play. And I don't think I'd have a sack for a game or two.
Starting point is 00:22:34 And he just was getting pretty irritated. So he had to give me his side of the coaching what he thought I needed to do on me and my brother to be successful. And so my mom was the only object in a room thus. Take off your earrings real fast and your reins and put your hands straight out. So he just had to get his, he had to get it off his chest before he walked out, before he walked out and went to the game. Took his dad hat off.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Had to put the coach hat off. bit. Yep, we got that a lot. I got to ask if he changed a little bit because Tyler Thompson wrote a good story on your whole family for our website months ago. But it seemed Grandpa might have been a little different than Dad because Jasper was talking about him getting him shoes and look good, play good, feel good. Did you see a shift in the attitude when he went from dad to grandpa? I mean a super duper, duper shift.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I was just telling him some stories of one of the two times he really got on him, but the other Sometimes he was, I mean, like, he bought, I mean, he bought Jasper so many pair of, I'm like, it was, it was, I'm like, Dad, I would ask you for a pair of my own. You're good. You got a pair. You got a pair. You know what I'm saying? I'm like, man, but it switched, man, when he got the grandkids, man, he switched Schuyler and Scholar and Jasper could do no wrong in his eyes. But, no, no, but they had a great relationship.
Starting point is 00:23:49 And so they, Jasper, I always say this Jasper and my granddad had just had some kind of, you know, real intimate bond. You know what I'm saying? They bought them close together, and they spent a lot of time together. So it was definitely great. Elvis never missed a game, whether it was Skyler playing or Jasper playing or when you and Derek were playing. He never missed a game for sure. You know, I think I've always said you left UK as one of the top defensive players ever.
Starting point is 00:24:14 I think art still, you, and we've got to put Josh Allen in that category. How do you think when somebody puts that kind of praise on you of what you did at UK? You know, I think it's part of the process. You know, you're blessed to be able to be in that position. And so when we went to UK, like, you know, Coach Mummy and that staff, Tim and those guys that kind of moved the needle. And so I wanted to be a part of that, man. And so I just wanted to try to do my part to help put UK where it is currently.
Starting point is 00:24:39 And so now it's definitely how I praise those guys. I know Art and Josh, those were phenomenal players. So just to be mentioned with those guys, it's definitely something. But it was great times there. And so UK, you know, growing from that stage in my life was great for me and made me into the man I am today. You know, we have a lot of younger listeners because Ryan Lemon, you know, he brings in new generation. So what was just like the current state of UK football when you committed?
Starting point is 00:25:03 You named all these powers that you could have gone to. I assume Kentucky, their records weren't quite what those were at the time. So it was a big decision for you. And what was just like when you made that? Well, I think, first of all, you know, Craig was there. How Mommy had brought this, you know, high-powered offense, some excitement, the UK football. My brother was there. So I knew a lot of the guys on Team George Matt.
Starting point is 00:25:23 some of those guys that used to grow over there sometime. And so I wanted to be a part of it. Like it wasn't the tradition, rich programs. And one thing my dad, I always told me before I made my commitment, go somewhere you can get to play. Practice is one thing, but you need to get game reps. If you want to be a pro, you have to get game reps. And playing in the best conferences in the country, man.
Starting point is 00:25:39 I said, well, you know, got a lot going for me. My dad was there. My brother was there. Craig was on his way out. But like I said, man, being a part of that and being able to getting a chance to go out and play early, I thought it was a no-brainer at the end of the day. When I really put everything on the table, UK was just the best decision for me.
Starting point is 00:25:55 And like I said, you're going to just play against the best every single Saturday. And so go somewhere where when you leave, you can come back and people have respect for you. You can, you know, you have some ties. And so that was very important. And you're wearing the blue today. You got a blue hat on. You got a blue pullover on. You're the head coach at Woodford County High School.
Starting point is 00:26:10 So you're obviously still involved with the game. What do you see when you see this Kentucky team right now? No, I like them. I think, you know, I think offensively we had to fix some things there. And I think I met Zach actually one of the first day he was there. was over there at the at the facility it was when Vince was still there and so like him but I just think cutter you got more time you know he's a he's a his body pro type body I think he's going to throw the ball he's not afraid to to make a mistake he's going to throw the ball so I think
Starting point is 00:26:36 he gives our long term he gives our offense the best chance to have some success and we're barred to go into the belly of the beast you know what I'm saying so you got to be you know I think our run games got better off the line I love the the running back group but I just it's going to be hard to run it for 150 175 when we get into the the the the the the heart of this SEC place. We've got to be able to throw the ball. So I like him. Defensively, I think we're always solid.
Starting point is 00:26:57 I just think a lot of times we wore our defense down. So third and fourth quarter we give up some plays we probably wouldn't give up early on if, you know, offense could control the ball a bit more. So, you know, it's tough. Every year we're in the toughest conference. And I always say, man, when you add Oklahoma and Texas, man, those are two high school, rich states. And maybe in years past when they were in SEC, we might be able to get a few of those kids.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Well, now they can all stay home and still playing SEC. So that makes it even tougher on us. You know what I'm saying? But no, I like Coach Dupes, I think it's just like I said, it's tough, man. I said, but we just got to get back to the old school, grind out some games to try to win them at the end. You have a couple wins over South Carolina, and one was down there. Yes. Talk about just how tough it is to go on a road.
Starting point is 00:27:38 And did they have the rooster crowing back then and what that atmosphere was like? Absolutely. It was part of one of the louder environments I've been into our member. And it was funny when I was playing for the Cardinals, a guy got cut. saw they bought another guy and he was laying on one bed, I'm on another bed. And he was like, I know you. He was a tackle from South Carolina when we played him. And so, but I just remember loud environment, crazy, it was a day game.
Starting point is 00:28:01 And so we were able to win a game dinner. So we're definitely going into a high style, which all the SECs are, but that's one of the louder ones I can remember being into on a 12 o'clock game. And so we got our hands forward. So we've got to be ready to go down there and play. We cannot. We just can't turn the ball over, man. If we turn the ball over, I think it's that's disaster for us.
Starting point is 00:28:18 And so what they did to us last year, I was at the game last year, and it was embarrassed us. That was one of our better performances. So we need to go down and get revenge. Well, there's still a lot of football left, but the schedule is, you know, pretty tough for this team. What do you think they need to do to kind of have some success now from playing on out? I think you, like you said, hopefully they've given cut of the keys to the, like, win-l loser draw. You just got to give it to him and let him go.
Starting point is 00:28:42 And then you evaluate him at the end of the year. So I think that's one thing is I think he'll be able to galvanize the guys, get them all together and say somebody that can trust them leaving offensively again. And I think if you do that, right, it's not going to be perfect, but I think you have to, you can't go back and forth. I think you've got to get some consistency. And so offensively, if we can just, if we can find a way, right, just to ball control, get the ball out quick, make some plays.
Starting point is 00:29:07 I think it helps our defense a lot. And I'm looking, I like the kid from Franklin. I'm looking for Ferrier to step up. I think we need one of the receivers to really step up and be, we need a one-two combination. So I like the kid. I've got a chance to talk to a few times. So I'm looking for that kid to step up and help us out an SEC play.
Starting point is 00:29:22 It's the football breakdown from a football legend. We'll switch to basketball, and I see Ryan's wheels turning. Maybe with some more stories coming out. My favorite story I yet haven't told you. All right. It's Drew Ryan and Dennis at KSbar. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back to KSR. Drew Franklin filling in for Matt Jones with Ryan Lemon here beside me. We also are happy to be joined by UK legend Dennis Johnson. We're going to switch our topic with him
Starting point is 00:29:55 from football to a little basketball, but first, Ryan Lemon, would you like to try to do an ad read? My ad read doesn't have the numbers in it. I got lucky. I got fortunate. I'm still haunting me. I feel like I've been benched. Are you missing the warning signs of skin cancer? Well, Dr. Skaggs at the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center

Starting point is 00:31:00 He's so excited. This is my favorite one. Okay. This is when he's playing at UK. He's at UK. Derek's at UK. And I've known the family for about four or five years. And I know he's Elvis and Rosetta, there's mom and dad.
Starting point is 00:31:12 And they keep talking about these Sunday after night. dinners. Well, I invited myself. I said, well, I want to come. I want to see how you feed these boys that are college athletes. I want to come and watch this. I walk in and I, and Dennis will back me up on this. Rosetta had two full chickens, a full ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, corn. It was like a Thanksgiving feast for 20 people. And there were like six of us there. And guess how much was left when we were finished? None. It was all. gone. I have never seen a Thanksgiving dinner on a Sunday afternoon in May. You're right. It was amazing. Your mother killed it that day. She's a cooker, man. We used to get all those guys over. I mean, it was every day. Breakfast and at least breakfast and dinner. But she was, finished clean up the kitchen. It's time to start cooking again. And it was, you were never like, you never wanted more. So she was, and she still does it. I have my, my, my, my, I'm on over a few, probably six, seven months ago when she did. She still does it. They were, they were very, they were very, they were very. They were very. They were very. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were. Oh, where was my invitation?
Starting point is 00:32:16 Where was Drew and I's invitation at? Next time you guys are more than welcome to come over. We did this with no cameras, just no, you know, way before social media. I'm not that. Rosetta and Alvis inviting us over for Sunday afternoon dinner. Ron, we believe you went there for a free meal without it being for work. Did you have a favorite thing she made? I mean, he named the chicken and ham and all that, Jevons.
Starting point is 00:32:36 I always, you know, I'm like, I'm kind of like, I'm a big breakfast guy, so I like, I like steaks on the grill and steak and eggs is good. her homemade pizzas are really, really good. Put a lot of meats on there. So that was those two of my favorite things. Don't you think it would be good content for Mario that she fixes a big meal for all of us one day? Come on. Mario, we'll get some weight on you, Mario. You might get it.
Starting point is 00:32:58 You like Jasper. We might put 20 on you, Big Dog. Why you put 20 on? Well, you mentioned Jasper. Obviously, that's a big topic around here. He grew up playing here, played at Southern Middle School, played at Woodford County before he went on to bigger and better things. I think the city of Lexington is so proud to see how he's developed
Starting point is 00:33:14 as a player and I know you're proud as a dad. What are your thoughts about him now where he is as a player as a freshman going into the UK? No, I'm, you know, as a dad, definitely, you know, excited for him. You know, it's been a long journey, right? A lot of long, early mornings, long nights in the gym. And then, you know, once he got to age, we sent him off to kind of figure that out itself.
Starting point is 00:33:33 And so, you know, once he went to Link and OTE, I think he prepared him for what he's going to go into now. And I told the story before, you know, I think Link was probably the best thing for him because the first two weeks he wanted to come home. You know, Bill told him, he was with Trey and LeBaron and all them guys, and he's just like, man, I'm not. Home set. Five, six shots is not enough for me.
Starting point is 00:33:50 You know what I'm saying? And me and Bill talked, and I love Bill Armstrong to this day, and Bill kind of walked him through it. And I went down there and just told him, I said, you're in the right place, when you need to be here. And I think failure is good for all kids, man. They need to go through it and have to figure it out. And so I didn't go to a game until, like,
Starting point is 00:34:04 they came up, I think they played in the Marshall County Hoop Fest was like in January. So I wanted to figure out of itself, and so I think that was really, really good for him to kind of just, if you having hard time, go to the gym, figure it out. You need to be by yourself. If basketball is really in you, then you'll figure it out. And about January, Bill called me, and I think he played in some time, he had like 25 or 26, and Bill was like, you know, he's figured it out.
Starting point is 00:34:25 And so, you know, and that's good. And I caught him. And my thing was like, you know, figure it out, you know what I'm saying? Like you, you're a basketball player. I won as far as I could with you as a dad to try to get you positions and all. Now, you've got to figure some stuff out playing with a lot of great players. And so everybody's an alpha in that room, you know, with Tray and LeBaron and all. Those guys, man, you had, I think him, the Iqadala son,
Starting point is 00:34:45 were the only underclass one on the team, so everybody else was seniors who were ready to sign. And so, but it was good for him. I mean, he had to compete in practice every day. And so it was a great experience. And then going to overtime, last year was another different experience. So I just, I was a big believer in, I'm comfortable experience, different.
Starting point is 00:35:01 So he had to figure it out, and he's done, knock on wood up to this point, he's done a good job at figuring out. Now, this is a different beats coming into college. And so, you know, routines and all that type stuff, what you gotta do, to five minutes and so I'm excited to see how he's going to transition and what he's going to do. We were there for the commitment ceremony at the high school. And pretty unexpectedly, there's a Dennis Johnson jersey comes out, basketball jersey, I should say.
Starting point is 00:35:24 Yes. Yeah, I mean, we all know there's football jerseys, but a nice twist there. How cool was that, even though you didn't get to officially play a lot for Kentucky, but you did have a moment with the basketball program, and Jasper used that to make his commitment. Absolutely, and his old agent, Nate Connie was the one that kind of put all that to go. So this would be cool to do this and went to the 9-0s and all that type stuff, and Morgan and Morgan. So it was cool, man, just to kind of, and I'm not one of those people.
Starting point is 00:35:46 I'm like, it's about you, but he wanted to do it. So I'm like, I'm with it. If you want to do it, I'm cool with it, but I never want to. I want to deflecting the Tits and Out Famous is his time and doing this thing. And so I'm excited to see him play. But no, it was definitely a cool moment. I'm sorry. Just briefly explain how the basketball thing with you worked,
Starting point is 00:36:01 where you're the football star and you ended up with a basketball jersey. So I used to go work out with him in the summer. And so we had talked about it. When I was getting recruited, I could play football and basketball. And so that was kind of the plan of action. And so in the summer, I would work out in the U.K. in the morning of basketball. Then the nighttime, I would go play. And what's it?
Starting point is 00:36:17 The seating center? Seating Center, I'm going to go play. And so I did it up until football was by the start. And so after the Outback Bowl, people don't know what it's, but I flew right home and started going to a morning. I was shooting in the morning and working out and stuff. And probably three or four days before I was going to probably suit up to play, I was in brightish workout one morning. And so Halmomi, tub me, and my dad were sitting in Memorial.
Starting point is 00:36:40 And I'm like, uh-oh, this can't be good. And so they wanted to have a conversation. And Coach Mommy really wanted me. He's like, if you want to be an NFL player, you know, I had some wrist injuries and some hand problems. Like, you need to get stronger and get bigger. And I kind of want you to be a leader for the basketball or for the football team. And so my dad was like, ultimately, you signed a football scholarship. And if that's your goal, then maybe we don't do it.
Starting point is 00:36:59 And so we made a decision that day for me not to play. And that was probably the one regret I have as an adult not being able to just go out and play because I was able to compete. Like I said, I was top 100 in the country coming out of high school, played for St. of a Curr, a real didist team. We traveled all over the country, and so I knew a lot of the guys that we would have played against, but that was my one regret not getting a chance to get on the floor, Ruppermereen and be able to play.
Starting point is 00:37:22 But I'll get a chance to be able to see my son, which is probably even more special. Well, you mentioned Jasper going to, you know, Link and then OT. Well, now he's right down the street. He's too close. He leaves at the lodge right down the street. Is he been sneaking home? washing these clothes at your house, sneaking in their mom's vittles? Or is he making any kind of, hey, you still need to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Stay over there. Hey, I said, I told you before, man, the best thing they got him and Skylar live together, so they got a little condo downtown. And so the best thing they did was they took the dog. So now I'm a true, my life for a true empty nest. But no, he actually, when I came home from Florida, my wife flew in early that morning. And so I didn't get on about 7 o'clock, and he was at home. And she was doing some stuff to his hair.
Starting point is 00:38:04 So every once in a way, I would come by, but I know his schedule was busy by. So, you know, just I try to preach them now about a routine, I think. Pros have a routine means you've got to get in a routine every day. But every once in a way he'll come and want to get a free meal or take something out of the pantry or take something from my mom and myself or looking through stuff. I said, hey, you got your own stuff now. You know what I'm saying? You got your own now, Bigdaw.
Starting point is 00:38:22 Now that they've ramped up practice there, it's still very early. I mean, yesterday it was the first day to even this week we can do 20 hours. But you got any scoop for us? Anything you've heard out of there? You've been watching? Well, my buddy called me, texted me yesterday. I wasn't watching our golfers in Richmond. and Ron Brown, who we know, Ron said, I'm sitting here with Ray John and Tayson, watching your son play and say he's shooting it pretty well.
Starting point is 00:38:44 And so that's kind of insight I've gotten. I haven't been to practice or anything. And so I talk to Jasper just about, you know, just there are no magic peels that work, just continue to work hard, and you'll get the resort you want. So I've kind of stayed out of it, but just people from here and there kind of say, if they've been to practice, I saw him do this or do that. So I just say, you know, time with tail, time with tails. It's got to go out there and you don't have a good time. And like I said, for a lot of these kids, it's a ton of pressure. But you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:39:08 And so I'll talk to him a lot about the mental part of it because, like I said, any of those kids, the first time you go out there and lay an egg, man, the people are on you. So you got to be thick skin and be mentally tough and just believe in your work. What do you think his role will be on the team this year? And what do you want his role to be on the team this year? You know, I think you got to go to Fanger Row and practice every single day. I'm a coach because I get it, you know, and I tell my parents, every one of your kids is LeBron James. And so there's only one football and 85 guys.
Starting point is 00:39:33 We're going to put the best 11 out there. So, you know, whatever you're doing practice is going to show in the game and wherever they trust you to do. You know, but I think he can play a little bit on the point. I think he can shoot it off the ball. And so I think you'll be able to do a lot of different things. I think that one of the good thing about Jasper is he knows how to get people involved. You know, on his A.U team a few years ago, he was playing up and so had all those guys on the team. And the one thing I like, he was able to find, you know, everybody wants the ball.
Starting point is 00:39:57 And sometimes you get those lips on the forehead like my granny's just said. He was able to find those guys to get them touches and stuff. And so I think he has a commens. team and so I think he can adapt to whatever but like I said he's got to go out there you're playing in the toughest conference a basketball conference in the country man so you got to go out and just like you said every day is a new day it's a job interview you got a fine way to get minutes I mean he obviously played up going to link and OTE but now I mean the SEC's got some grown I mean the SEC has some football players out there that should probably be on their second job post
Starting point is 00:40:29 college by now but they exist is he ready to make that big jump in that challenge and have to get a little more physical Absolutely. No, I think, like I said, and he told me when he came back from USA basketball, he said the first few days, like, man, you know, it was, it was physical. You know what I'm saying? And just trying to fill itself out. He had lost some weight when he went to Switzerland, but he was trying to get his weight back up. But I just think you got to play it a lot, you know, play a lot. And he would always, even when he was young, I should take him to the White and Harrisburg and play with the old guys and get bumped and knocked around.
Starting point is 00:40:56 This is different, right? But you just got to, you got to get used to it. Like all things, I think you got to get used to it as a freshman. I was fast in college, but I'm like, man, I didn't know these guys, these guys from Florida are different. guys from, you know, Ohio University in the first few games, which is not the truth. And so it'll take some adjustment time for him, but once he gets settled in, I think he'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:41:13 All right, we'll take a quick break. We'll come back for one last segment with Dennis. It's Ryan and Drew at K.S. Bar. Got a good crowd in here for lunch. Starting point is 00:45:28 Welcome back to KSR, Drew Franklin, Ryan Lemon, and Dennis Johnson. We're at KS Bar and Grill. And just like the last two segments, we're coming back with Ryan Lemon giggling. I have no idea what's going on between his ears, but I feel like I would be robbing all of you if I just didn't let Ryan Lemon say what he needs to say. Well, I picked up the A Vision Glass text machine during that break, and there's all these text messages new coming in. I look at everyone about Dennis.
Starting point is 00:45:50 Uh-oh. Dennis Johnson. I remember in elementary school playing the Mercer County All-Star team, which was basically their seventh and eighth graders, and they killed us, and Dennis looked like. like one of the parents got to put on the pads and go full speed. No, I was telling somebody that I said, me and my brothers would play youth, middle school, freshman, and high school all in the same week.
Starting point is 00:46:10 You know what I'm saying? And have to practice when you had a few minutes. So we go from the high school, across the street to the middle school, and then after middle school practice, go to the sportly field and do youth football practice. So we had a 9-to-5 of football practice. Asked Dennis about the time at East Jessman where he blocked the kids so bad. I'm pretty sure the imprint of the ball is still on the wall. over there.
Starting point is 00:46:29 If not, it's still in orbit somewhere. Must have been in a basketball game. Basketball baseball, yeah, yeah. Ask Dennis about when he was playing baseball and was a foot taller than everybody else on the baseball field. Everybody's seen that picture. One second. That's legendary.
Starting point is 00:46:44 Well, that's a story where, I guess, in the city championship or something, Derek hit the home run to put your team ahead, but you pitched a no-hitter on the field. Like, the Johnson Boys won the city title, basically. You remember the 6-3? playing 12-view baseball throwing freaking 80 minutes an hour. Two fastballs and it changed up, and they were like swing seven times. They also hated you all.
Starting point is 00:47:07 Shane, let's get one call out of the way. I know we have someone on the line. Let's get through that. Let's go to Justin. Justin, what's up? Hey, fellas. Appreciate you taking my call. Calling from South Carolina,
Starting point is 00:47:17 just sitting outside of Wofford College, thinking about our guy, Dwight Perry. But I have a football question. Tonight they release the SEC schedule, the six opponents that we don't. don't know who we'll play next year. Who do you guys think that we'll draw tonight?
Starting point is 00:47:33 And then percentage chance that we finally get Texas A&M at home. We have yet to play them at home. Thanks for taking my call. Thanks. I appreciate the call. You took my answer. I would say high probability Texas A&M. A big part of the new system is getting everybody to all the stadiums.
Starting point is 00:47:46 You know, you're getting played the teams every couple years. I think just to get some balance. How many times they haven't been here? We've been there once. Is that the only meeting? Yeah, they've never been here. I also expect Oklahoma to be on the schedule. I think, you know, when you're in the new school,
Starting point is 00:48:01 I think Oklahoma probably gets Kentucky in that rotation probably next time. Those are two good picks. Do you have one you want to be on the schedule, maybe a trip? For years I wanted Ole Miss. We've been lucky they gave us that twice in the last couple. So I won't get greedy and keep wanting more of the Grove. Is there a trip you all like to make? Or Dennis, the place you remember fondly?
Starting point is 00:48:18 LSU was the year we beat them. That was a crazy nighttime game. That's where you want to play. It was probably my all-time favorite trip as a freshman. We knocked them off down there. but it was, it was, it was, it was crazy. Was that the Seth Hanson game winning field goal game? Yep.
Starting point is 00:48:33 I remember that. That's a big win. That was a huge one. At LSU, man, night game. Pactos, the, they had the tiger down there or a roar, and it was, it was, it was all was, it was meant to be. That was high on my bucket list. I have not been able to do it.
Starting point is 00:48:48 I know. I think that's the answer. I remember the year we were just getting destroyed, Doreen Baker, like, celebrated. You know, he made a big blonde side block. and I'm like, do we're down 50, let's just get home. But I would like to get back there and get another shot at them. I was at the one where we got them here. Number one, I would love to go to Baton Rouge, though, and be competitive at some point.
Starting point is 00:49:05 In recent years, they've been to Texas. They've been to Texas A&M. They've been to Ole Miss. Some of these road trips, we don't get to make a lot. I think LSU's the right answer. I lost $500. We went to the year they caught the pass. We were in a special team meeting for the car.
Starting point is 00:49:18 Me and Trell Falk was an All-American Linebacker. We had a bet, and we were late to them, so we both get fined. So I'll run into the meeting room. I'm like, we beat and we kicked it. So two minutes later, Treve was in like, get my money back. So I always have a bad memory of that. So, yeah, I got, I lost a lot of money that back. I got fine, and Treve took my money back.
Starting point is 00:49:39 So you played for the Arizona Cardinals for, what, three or four years? Three years. And then you went to the 49ers? 49ers, yeah, for about half a season. And was it your wrist or you had a wrist? Wrist and I had an elbow. They wanted to get Tommy Johns. And so then I went to Canada for a little while.
Starting point is 00:49:52 I just, Canada, you know, Amar Stewart was a legend in Canada. I remember being in the meeting. It's like, man, we got to block this kid. Amma, I'm like, Stuart? They're like, they treated my royalty over there. I'm like, Ammore, Stewart? Like, yeah, but I just didn't do it. So then I came back and started real life.
Starting point is 00:50:06 My mom, and I wrote my mom a letter about, you know, going to the pros early, and she said, oh, it's about time to come back and get that degree. So I flew home. I think I was in somewhere at the time, and I flew home when we had this conversation and said, you need to re-enroll in school, and this letter you wrote me still on my refrigerator,
Starting point is 00:50:22 so let's make it happen. So yeah, that was my, After Canada, I was into my football career. And briefly, what year are you in at Woodford now? This is year 11. Year 11, yep. I saw we got you in the KSR top 25 off to get start. I mean, you're a couple places behind my Madisonville Maroons.
Starting point is 00:50:40 But you'll climb, I'm sure. What's up next for you? You mentioned you got this week off? Yeah, we're off this week. And we start districts next week against South Autumn at home. And so we've got a tough district. But now, man, we're going to have a great plays. We've got good ad man, good people, man.
Starting point is 00:50:55 We've up the ante in sports in Woffer County, so it's a good time. If you've got to get a chance, Ryan did a game for us. He got to see the atmosphere. We kind of crank it up, have a DJ. It is a good little high school atmosphere. We get it going. So now I love Woffer County is good people, and so we're excited for this year. We've got to get to Crogall Field.
Starting point is 00:51:12 That's our next step. And so hopefully we can take that. We've been 13 and 1, 12, and so we've got to take the next step to get to the Croger Field and win one. Before he went to Wilford County, he was head coached Jesse Clark Middle School. Jesse Clark. Gavin Lemon transferred to Jesse Clark Middle School basically to play football his eighth grade year for Dennis. Oh, this seems like a violation. And Dennis, one time I...
Starting point is 00:51:33 I know what you're going to say. There may be a couple stories, but one story is like, Gavin, you got a body like Atlas. What's it? You know, go make a play. Gavin comes home like, what's Atlas? What does that mean? Why does he say I got a body like Atlas? What does that mean?
Starting point is 00:51:47 He did. He was built, man. He had him having a good eighth grade year. You had him on one side of the defensive line. and a fellow by the name of Jedrick Wills on the other side of the offensive line on that team. So Gavin had a lot of tackles because everybody's running away from Jerry. Use what you get. Use what you get.
Starting point is 00:52:05 Yeah. Well, it's been fun watching you two giggle together. I haven't seen Ron like this in a while. Thank you for joining us, Dennis and that family ever since I moved here in 96, and they've been so good to me over the years, his mom and dad, and kind of proud moments to watch him and Derek both, you know, grow up. And now they're old men now. They're old-timers like me now.
Starting point is 00:52:23 Right. Road. No, I appreciate it, man. I appreciate it. I appreciate you guys having us. Like I said, Ryan's been a good friend of my family for a long time. I remember coming us on the news.
Starting point is 00:52:30 I still got some of the VHS. I was there. Your high school when Haredesburg played for the state title. Yep. And you came out of the locker room. You looked right in our camera and said, I'm going to win this for my daddy. Yep.
Starting point is 00:52:40 He sure did. And we didn't. And he didn't. We'll be back tomorrow, Ron, am I handed it back over to you? So are you driving tomorrow? Anything to tease? What's going on? We've got Jojo Kim.
Starting point is 00:52:50 There's supposed to be here tomorrow. Hopefully. At K. for Wingsday. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman

Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
