Starting point is 00:02:37 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Was that, ma'am? It looked like it. Welcome in, Kentucky Sports Radio. True Franklin here with Ryan Lemon at KS. Bar and Grill. It is Tuesday, right? September 30th?
Starting point is 00:02:54 It is Tuesday. Bright skies in Lexington, Shannon, the dudes in Louisville. We've got a fun show planned for you today. Ryan booked us more guest. Richie Farmer and his longtime best friend Buck Stivers, who have been on the show a couple times. They will join us today. We were actually just wondering if they'll show up.
Starting point is 00:03:09 I just saw a truck go by. Was that them? They did kind of look. The truck just came in on two wheels. It looked like they were looking in. Like, I think that's them. It looks like them. It might be them.
Starting point is 00:03:17 I see shadows. I see them. They will be in here in just a minute. We love talking to Richie and Buck. We'll have them for the whole show. But we also want to hear from you on the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line, 859-9-2-80-2287. You can also text Ryan on the.
Starting point is 00:03:30 A Vision Glass Text Machine, 502, 735, 36, 80. Did you forget it again? I forgot it again. Three straight days. Ryan, I mean, at some point, there has to actually be consequences for action, Shannon. This has been every day. I know. Mario needs to have a good talking to you about the consistency.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Now you're being consistently bad. You're leaving stuff at home that's supposed to be a part of the show. Yeah, but one time, okay, ha-ha, that's funny. But I think it's been every day. What's going on with the text? I mean, they pay good money to sponsor it. They bought you a brand new iPhone, and you have yet to show up with it. I think I forgot it at Bywater Farm on Friday.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Oh, my goodness. Definitely forgot it yesterday. What are we doing? The aviages and glass tech machine. Well, it's on a charger at my house. But that doesn't do us. They don't sponsor the Ryan Lemon nightstand where it just sits there collecting dust. They wanted to be part of the show.
Starting point is 00:04:22 I think he's on probation, Shannon. I think he is, too. We need to tape that to your arm so you don't forget it, Ryan. You've got to have it with you. I think if I forget it, tomorrow at Shannon's house, there has to be a punishment. All right, we'll set that up. Also, there's one more thing you forgot.
Starting point is 00:04:36 I'll get to in a second. Let me run through my stuff. I'll go to you, Shannon. As always, this show is brought to you by T.J. Smith, personal injury lawyer. Call T.J. and what, Shannon? He'll make them pay. All right. Now with that, let's get to the other thing, Ryan Lemon forgot.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Richie Farmer is here. We'll go right back to last Friday's show where Ryan made up a game, where we each had to build our top basketball. roster using players who share the same first initial of our first name. Correct. So my name is Drew. I had DeMarcus cousins. Dan Isle, Darius Miller, had a long list.
Starting point is 00:05:10 I did forget Deeran Fox. Sorry, Deering. But Ryan, who made up his own, this game, with the R's, forgot several key players, including one, Richie Farmer, who now joins us today with his good friend Buck. Good to have you guys. Richie, Ryan, would you like to hash this out before we move on? Well, I was listening, and, you know, since I knew Buck and I was going to be here today, I was like, he'll surely remember me on this one.
Starting point is 00:05:38 And then I got to listening to his list, and, I mean, you know, like he left off me and Rex. The Kentucky boys. I mean, you know, yeah, we can't even make the squad. I mean, we weren't even on the bench. I humbly, humbly bow in your presence asking and begging for your forgiveness, because that was a total oversight on my part. You know, it's live radio. You know, you're thinking on the fly.
Starting point is 00:06:07 You know, and I just totally. Dude, it was homework. You could have said about this for 12 hours. And you had been at the home. You were the one that designed the homework. You were the teacher. You know, I was so excited about my back court of Ralph Beard and Rajan Rondo. forgot about Richie Farmer and Rex Chapman.
Starting point is 00:06:23 So I beg your forgiveness, sir. Well, I mean, we'll work past it. Okay. We'll work past it, but it's going to take a while. Haven't hurt for that. That was hurtful. That was hurtful. It's good to have you here, Richard and Buck.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Oh, it's great to be here, guys. I mean, we're so excited that you all ask us to do this. And I know, you know, Buck, he's just through the roof. Yeah, a little bit shaky, though. We got, had a little tough time getting here with the traffic. You're in the big city. You know, it's a little bit of a big city. it in Clay County.
Starting point is 00:06:56 We got like New Circles and Nicholasvilles and all kinds of things that will get backed up. Yeah, it was a lot of blacktopping. Yeah, a lot of construction. Well, it is good to have you all in here, and don't sweat it. Ryan forgets a lot of things these days. I'm glad you all said to that, Richie. Just for those who don't know, I know you all have been on several times. You're some of our favorites, but I'll go to you, Buck.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Explain, you know, I'm sure most of our listeners are familiar with the basketball legend here, but let's get a little bit about Buck. you know, you've known Richie forever. You were probably the most talented of the two, but you go back several years, lifelong friends, right? Yes, I was always a little older than Richies. That's how he was able to get perfect his shooting because I used to smack that stuff in the neighbor.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Is that what happened? That's what happened. I didn't know that's part of the story. Yeah, and the left hand where he had, you know, he just couldn't get it over me. And, yeah. Yeah, we used to, and we also, we played, you know, we had basketball goals hung up just wherever you could hang one up and we had one.
Starting point is 00:08:00 His dad had a barn down there and it was, they had Tennessee walking horses and so, you know, they had a big long hallway in there. And so we figured out a way that we could put us a goal up and we tied it up with sea grass string, you know, on the side. So you had to be, you know, we nailed it. We nailed it to the rafter, but then, you know, we had to, because it would sag. And so we tied it up with string on the side.
Starting point is 00:08:36 And so you had to be at certain angles to be able to make it. But no, he's telling you the truth. You know, he was two years older than I was and a lot bigger and stronger. He's blocking your stuff. So I had to learn how to, you know, get my shot off. against bigger people. Yeah. You know, those days, we played against older folks.
Starting point is 00:08:57 We would play against, you know, the bigger. Then in grade school, you know, I mean, you'd have the third and fourth graders playing with the fifth grade team. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, we played against older people. And I think that certainly in a lot of ways can help you. Buck, what was what?
Starting point is 00:09:19 Is it tough to guard? And there must be some tough. angles, if there's string hanging and the goals tilted, it seems there's only certain spots you could get a good shot from. Yeah, straight on or from the corner and one little spot on the wing, but you had to shoot between the strings. And you had to put plenty of art on it and had to go up over the rafter. I know everybody likes to give their best friends a hard time, but if you can brag on
Starting point is 00:09:43 them for a moment, at what point growing up were you like, all right, this guy's got something? Well, I mean, it was pretty obvious. You know, I can remember when he was in probably third or fourth grade, the coach basically, you know, brought him in and said throw it to him, and he's going to shoot it. You know, which a lot of the seventh and eighth graders didn't care much for that strategy, but, you know, it seemed to work. It's probably also a giveaway when he walked into third grade with a mustache.
Starting point is 00:10:11 That probably said he was a little different too. That probably set him apart. Yes, that helped him. whole lot with that section of it. We're not going to take it easy on him, though. You're going to push him around and a little third grader take my spot out of here. Well, at that point, I didn't have a spot. You know, I was in like in between her.
Starting point is 00:10:31 I was in like fifth grade, you know, it went all the way to eighth grade. So at that time, I wasn't even, you know, really playing that much. We want to hear a lot of these stories about your all's past. We're going to do that all day long. We want to get calls on the Clark's Pump Shop phone line, 859, 288, 02287. if you have questions for Richie or a buck or Ryan or Drew or Mario, we'll drag him over. It's not a Wednesday, but it's Ask Anything Tuesday. And I think Matt's back on Friday.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Correct. Tomorrow we've got a fun show plan. We'll talk about that later. And I try to be my own guy. I'm not trying to do Matt's exact show here, but I do feel like we have to mention the Cincinnati Reds in the first segment. I mean, he mentions them in the first segment anyway. No matter what they do, win or lose. But Ryan, it is a pretty big day for the first.
Starting point is 00:11:16 old Reds, right? Back in the playoffs. They made the playoffs in the COVID year, but that was the shortened season. So really, it's their first time to make the playoffs in, like, what is it, like 30, over 30 years or something like that. It's amazing. I haven't won a series since 1995. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Beating the Dodgers of all teams. It's a big deal for them to be, I think, what, when September 1st rolled around, Shannon, I think they were like maybe six games out of the wildcard race and still somehow made it. They got hot right when the Mets kind of did not get hot. They started losing right when the Reds were winning. It is kind of a hell of a run they got on to get in the playoffs. You know, they've got a sneaky good pitching staff.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Yeah. Hunter Green's going tonight. I mean, you know, he's going tonight. I'm not saying they can beat, you know, obviously the Dodgers are, they have probably the best roster in baseball. He's picked them tonight. He has picked them tonight. But I picked the Red. I don't know if he bet on them, but he picked.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Yeah, but I picked the Reds of that. I think it's going to be an upset tonight. The Dodgers do lead in, like, home runs, like slugging, most hitting stats. But the two sides' pitching stats are pretty equal. It's only a three-game series. We can dream a little bit. So if Hunter Green's going tonight, is Lidolo going tomorrow night for the Reds? If you throw those two guys back-to-back, you got a shot.
Starting point is 00:12:32 We got a shot. I mean, and obviously there's no pressure. So, you know, everybody expects them to lose. The Dodgers won, what, five of six during the season? Yeah. Yeah. And Hunter Green got destroyed in one of them. They lost 7-0, and he gave up five runs on his own.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I didn't know that. But he's an L.A. native redemption game tonight, 9 o'clock ESPN. What's our KSpar special? Great American burgers, $9? Yeah, Great American burgers. They're normally like $12.50. You can get a Great American burger for $9. And if you come in wearing anything Cincinnati Red, you get a free side of fries.
Starting point is 00:13:06 So if you want to order a chicken sandwich or a fish sandwich or some wings, if you have red stuff on, you still get a side of fries with a purchase. So game day specials all day, today, tomorrow, and on Thursday, if they're still playing. And if they can get to game three, we'll have a party here. And I think Matt is going to try to go from airport to KS Bar to watch the game here. But one game at a time. Got that tonight, 9 o'clock, ESPN.
Starting point is 00:13:26 All three games. Hunter Green versus Blake Snow. For 9 o'clock, too, aren't they? I think Thursday. Yeah, I like the consistency. Yeah. One other quick thing before we go to break in Cincinnati Sports. The Bengals.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Watched it. It's not great. I actually turned it off. You know, Ryan, I work from the NFL now. That's right. I need to watch every minute of every game. I get Rogers emails. It's a whole thing, but I had to turn that game off last night.
Starting point is 00:13:49 The Bengals, they're not like the Titans where they just completely suck, but they have no hope with Burrow being out. They didn't score a touchdown game. Their offense is nothing without Burrow out there, it seems like. I mean, you still got Jamar Chase and Higgins, but they can't get them involved in any way, shape, or form it seems like. Chase, probably the best receiver in the NFL, completely nothing this year. Doesn't have the QB to help them out.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Maybe you go get James Winston, but also wanted to bring up after the game. I don't know if you saw this. Chad Johnson does some kind of show with Shannon Sharp. I can't keep up with all the Shannon Sharp shows. Yeah, right. But Chad is just bawling, his eyes out crying, how disappointing is. Not like a little tear. Full-on, grown man, ugly cry over the bingles.
Starting point is 00:14:29 So one Cincinnati sport on a high today, the other on a low, because I think it's going to be a long year for Cincinnati. Yeah, Burrell's out for a long time. So there's no magic fix, I think, for that offense right now. No quick fix for sure. We did have a unique moment last night at the game. brother-in-law Michael lives in Denver and he sent me a picture from the stadium. He was at the game with our friend Tyler and right in front of him were people wearing key jerseys. How about that? And he said, is this? Is this their parents? It's like that absolutely is. So in a stadium of whatever thousand. Brother-in-law is up sitting right next to Dante and Nicole last night. Ryan, do they just go to everything? I do. I mean, they're the most supportive parents. You've got one in Lincoln, Nebraska now. That can't be an easy trip. And it doesn't matter if they're playing Seattle, New York, in Denver.
Starting point is 00:15:15 They're fine in Devin with the Broncos. There's probably not a lot of people in the stadium wearing number 26 key jersey. So I think when Michael saw that, like that has to be their family or something. But yeah, Dante and Nicole, they go to Nebraska games on Saturday. Broncos games on Sunday. Broncos are getting ready to go to London. Like they play the Eagles next and then I think they go to London.
Starting point is 00:15:34 While we're talking about the Keys, this man sitting right here, Ritchie Farmer, reached out to me when Dane was here at UK. Say, hey, man, I'd like to talk to Dane. I'd like to tell him about, you know, being a local kid, a contestant. kid playing for the UK. I'd like to just talk to him about my experience and maybe help him a little bit. I thought that was really cool for Richie to reach out and do that. Well, it was during the time when he was kind of going through a little difficult
Starting point is 00:15:56 spell where he had some drops and, you know, people were, you know, kind of on his case. But, you know, I think the world of the kid and I wish him nothing but success, you know, and whatever he does, he certainly has a chance to play at the next level. and I would love nothing more of them to see that for it. Well, that's very cool that you do that, Rich. You've probably done that several times. We'll find out more about that and a little more after the break. I might talk a little more about the overall MLB playoff starting today.
Starting point is 00:16:25 We start like 1 o'clock, right? There's four games today, I think. First one's at 1. I think the Padres play at 3, I think, something like that. I'm very open about that. I do not pay attention until right now. I will watch every game today. I didn't watch a single full game of the regular season,
Starting point is 00:16:37 but I lock in for playoff baseball. That starts at 1, and we have a lot more here at KS. Bar with Drew, Ryan, Richie. and Buck, we'll be right back. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened.

And in recognition, in the Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
Starting point is 00:17:57 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be, a good person while you hear on earth?
Starting point is 00:18:14 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.

Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. Starting point is 00:19:37 Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel like you don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals.

Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Welcome back to KSR. Drew Franklin here with Ryan Lemon. Richie Farmer and Buck Stobbers made the trip from Clay County, despite a little bit of black topping getting in the way, as they said, Ryan Lemon. Slowing them down just a few minutes. That's all right. You know, they're used to that traffic in Clay County. You know, where there's maybe, what is their one car?
Starting point is 00:21:06 Well, there's low traffic. We're used to that traffic where there's no traffic. Well, there's no traffic. Oh, yeah, you're liable to get held up by a bicycle for you. We love Clay County. We've done some shows down there with the M-MFer concert. Yeah, what's the place with the Grippos fries? Pats.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Pats. Pats has the ones that are the best fries and burgers around. Absolutely. We want to hear from you all on the Clark's Puppen Shop phone line, 859-280-287. Probably talk a little basketball with Richie. We could do more Reds because Buck just went to his car and came back wearing a Reds batting helmet that looks like it's 50 years old. What season would be? Is that from?
Starting point is 00:21:40 It's pretty faded. Well, actually, the hat came from when we was kids, you could go to Sailor Brothers supermarket and get a slush puppy and a little bitty batting helmet. And if you got so many, you end up getting the batting helmet. So that's how many slush puppies I drank. So you're telling on yourself, you're one of the people they put on the wall when you do the food challenges. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:22:04 And I'm the one with the hat, too. That batting helmet has to be from the 70s. because it is faded and it's barely the thing hanging on there. It's got to be the 70s. I'm 58, and I was probably 5 or less when I got that. Wow. So I wasn't far off with my 50-year prediction. Are you all Reds fans down there in Clay County?
Starting point is 00:22:26 Yeah, growing up, you know, that was really who we had access to. That was the games that would be on TV if there ever were any, and then we would listen to Marty Branneman, you know, on the radio. I remember when I was 16, our little league group went to a Reds game, and me and Richie and his brother Russ drove down in my little S-10 pickup and watched the Reds play. I'll never forget it because they got in a fight, and Russ rode in the back of the trip.
Starting point is 00:23:00 From Cincinnati to London. And he finally was, you know, knocking on the wind of wanting in there. He got a little cool. I have an image of him in the back of the front of the country. truck and you wearing that batting helmet up driving that I remember what started the fight is that radio friendly I have no idea I mean it could have been brother brotherly love probably pretty common around that time Shannon let's knock out some phone calls all right let's go to Pat Pat thanks for calling in yeah what's going on I just have to
Starting point is 00:23:33 talk about the football game I know it's a basketball over ed speak but I actually live in Charleston, South Carolina, grew up in Louisville, went to UK, diehard UK fans. Love you, Richie. Thank you, sir. But this is an embarrassment of what's been going on with us. South Carolina owns us. They owns us, and I hate, I can't believe I'm even saying this, I hate South Carolina more than I hate U of L. I do, because you don't understand who live in a state.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Well. They act like their L. Alabama and Georgia. They think they're the best, and every time they beat us, I've got to hear it from all. A lot of fans. And they're obnoxious as can be, because they're not that good.
Starting point is 00:24:22 They're not that good. But we lose to them like that, and now I have to hear it from all these people. So I just had to get that out of my chest, have a great rest of the day, and thanks for letting me call it. Yeah, I appreciate the call. Glad you were able to let that out.
Starting point is 00:24:36 That felt therapeutic there. But you're right. They're some of the most obnoxious fans in the SEC. I think I talked about this on pregame, Ryan. We think about the Tennessee's of being loud and, you know, the worst. South Carolina is not too far off, but they don't get talked about enough for that. And, you know, you got punched in the face by one of them. You know, you talk about former players that played there.
Starting point is 00:24:56 Like, I think even Jojo mentioned it, Joe Kim, when he was here. It is as loud as any place they ever played. When it gets rocking and gets going and they play in Sandstorm, it is. It's a tough place to play, and when you turn it over, I have a scoop and score and an interception within 45 seconds. The top's going to blow off of a place like that. And the caller sound apologetic for bringing up football on a basketball show. Now, we're still complaining about football.
Starting point is 00:25:20 We'll do plenty of that. It just happens that we have a former basketball player here. But we want football calls too. This is a big week, and we know everybody's pretty frustrated. I assume you all are down on the football cats at the moment? Some one. It's hard to find a lot of positive things. you know, the one thing, you know, I really like cutterbole.
Starting point is 00:25:42 I played basketball against his dad in high school. He played in Maroo County. Scott? Yes, and, you know, we actually, we went to Europe together. You know, during the, I played, we played on that Kentucky Junior All-Star team together and went to Europe together. So, you know, I'm cheering for him. I'm a big fan of his.
Starting point is 00:26:04 And I think, you know, He has a lot of a bright future ahead. He made a lot of mistakes, but, you know, I was hearing Anthony White yesterday morning and talk a little bit about he said if I'd gone off, my career had been based on my first game. It was the worst game I ever played. You know, so sometimes that can motivate you. But you learn from it. He needs experience.
Starting point is 00:26:30 But I think that that's the one bright spot that we can talk about. but there's a lot of things to be disappointed about, and that South Carolina game just brought a lot of them to the surface, I think. I think a lot of people are patient in Bowley being young. They know he's in a tough spot, but Ryan, Nick Rouse just shared a stat about the offense as a whole. It's not going to be good, is it? It's not pretty. There's only, let me get this right, only two teams in all of the FBS have fewer passing touchdowns in Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:27:02 and it's not even the military schools. that usually don't throw. It's UMass and Northern Illinois and then Kentucky with the fewest passing touchdowns so far this season. Wow. Well, we knew going in, we were going to be a run-heavy team because we had the good running backs and a good offensive line. But I thought the passing game with the receivers we had
Starting point is 00:27:20 would be enough to get something going. When our leading receivers are a couple tight ends, I mean, it makes you kind of wonder, okay, what is going on in that wide receiver room that they can't get somebody to kind of step up and help that passing game a little bit? Yeah, thank God for that Easter Michigan. game, Eastern Michigan game when they got them going.
Starting point is 00:27:36 But let's move on from that and have happier things. Who's up next on the phone line, Shannon? Let's go to James. James, what's up? Hey, good afternoon or good morning. I like to say, let's keep it a basketball show for a moment for me. I heard this story. I believe I heard this story from the Rick Petino side of things,
Starting point is 00:27:55 but I'd like to take you back, Richie, about 35 years ago, 1990, I believe. And I only ask this because I think the outcome was a good outcome. If I recall the story correctly that you left the team briefly or went back to Clay County after a conflict of sorts. And Rick Petino came to your house and you guys had a come to Jesus meeting. And I would like to hear the story from your perspective and kind of the context of what surrounded that and how that story went. And I'll hang up and listen. Thanks, guys. Well, listen, we only got like a listen in a minute. So sit on that because I don't want to cut this story at all.
Starting point is 00:28:30 I want to hear your response because I've heard that story too. You've ever heard from your side? Okay, yeah, I'll let you know what other. Okay, hang on. We don't want to cut you short. Yeah, we want the full. But it is certainly longer than a minute. Yeah, yeah, we'll hold off.
Starting point is 00:28:44 We'll come right back to that out of the break. It's Drew here with Ryan at KS Bar and Grill. Big Reds Day. Come in here for our Reds discounts game tonight at 9 o'clock, and we got Richie and Buck here sharing stories. We'll be right back after this. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J., he'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. This is not Matt Jones. This is Drew Franklin. Matt Jones is wrapping up his South African safari right now. I'll actually check in with him later today. I'm doing Matt Jones interrupted. Oh, you are doing that today?
Starting point is 00:29:19 Yeah. Get an update. Just Matt vacation time here, Drew. Let's just do all the shows. So it's all right. Does he fly back to the United States tomorrow or Thursday? I think Thursday, but I'm not possible. I'll let you know after I talk to him in his tent here later this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:29:34 I can't wait to hear he's true. stories because for him just picture trying to picture him in a tent on a safari that's just not how I picture Matt yeah I think when we say tents are you familiar with glamping I don't think he you know was out there putting the stakes in the
Starting point is 00:29:49 ground and sleeping out there with the with the elements but he's but he's staying out in the in the wild yeah at a I would assume a resort in the wild but he's still out in the wild you know sometimes tents have hot tubs whatever but I don't know he is
Starting point is 00:30:04 For him, he is roughing it. I'm not trying to downplay. He is in Cougar National Park with animals around him. For him, that's big. There's one thing that happened today when I walked in, and we've got to get to Richie's story. But I thought I have to get out in front of this before Matt Lans. All right.
Starting point is 00:30:19 I went in the back to get a drink. You know, got to get a little drink. Today I'm hosting. Got to get me a little water. And I reached for a straw like I normally would do. You got to have a straw on the radio. You know, got this little thing here. Got a sip.
Starting point is 00:30:32 It was a paper straw. Uh-oh. And I thought, if Matt Jones, Jones was here and saw a paper straw in this bar. I think he'd throw the TVs. I think he would break everything in here. Luckily, it was just sent as like a sample thing to try. We're not switching.
Starting point is 00:30:45 But as you know, if that had been something that happened while Matt was out of the country, I think there would have been hell to pay here. I think the headphones would have slammed down on the table, and we would have seen him for a couple segments. He'd been back there trying to get some plastic straws delivered immediately. But all good there, and he's back Friday at Shady Raes in Louisville. Yes, big show for Shady Raids. Matt's return.
Starting point is 00:31:03 So, Ron and I and Shannon have a couple more days. I want to talk about tomorrow's show a little later. Right now, we don't want to make people wait any longer for that story we got cut off on. So Richie, I forgot what the guy asked. Well, I've heard the story where Rick Patino, Richie left the team, Patino went down to Clay County, talked Richie to come back to the team. I've heard that story for years. I've never heard your side of it.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Well, it didn't happen exactly like that. But, you know, there was. There was a time where, you know, I'd been running morning, noon, and night for about a month. And, you know, and I kind of felt like that I was being picked on. And, you know, I was just going through a lot. And I was doing everything that I could do. And so one morning I was over, I was on the Stairmaster. And, you know, Rock Oliver was in there.
Starting point is 00:32:00 And, of course, Rock, you know, famous, you know, he was. famously not too happy in the morning, especially when he had to get up and be there. And I didn't want to be there either. But I was on Stairmaster, you know, doing the best that I could do. Nothing wrong, you know, whatever was happening. And he started, you know, cursing at me and, you know, talking about, you know, putting me down, whatever. Yeah. I guess trying to encourage me.
Starting point is 00:32:30 But at that point, I think it was my breaking point. So I just hit the button, stepped off of it, and I looked at him and kind of gave him a few choice words and said, I quit. And so I walked into the locker room, and I was sitting there, you know, because I'd never quit anything in my life. And I was sitting there, and I was, you know, because that was my dream. That was, you know, that was what I had always wanted to do. But I just, you know, I just kind of felt like that they wanted to get rid of me. They were trying to run me out. So, you know, so I was crying, and, you know, he comes in to the locker room,
Starting point is 00:33:11 and he's like, well, go up to the coach's office and tell them what you've done. And so, you know, I didn't even finish getting dressed. I, you know, just got my clothes together, and I walked up into the coach's office. When at any other time, if you've been trying to avoid them, they would have been everywhere. I walked through. There wasn't a coach anywhere in there, you know. So I just proceeded. I walked on out to the lodge, and I was crying so hard.
Starting point is 00:33:39 I called one of my buddies, and I said, look, I've quit the team, and I need somebody to take me to Clay County, you know, take me home. And they was like, all right, we'll be right on over. So they come over and pick me up, and I mean, we get to Manchester. And so when I walk in the door, there's my whole family set, and they're waiting on me. How'd they know? Well, coach had called. He was out on the road recruiting at the time, and he had called,
Starting point is 00:34:09 and, you know, he had let him know what was going on. So when I walked in, they was like, well, what's the deal? So, you know, we had a conversation, but they told me that Coach Petino had called and that he wanted that he was going to be able to call back that evening to talk to me. but he wanted actually us to come up there the next day. He was coming back in town. So I went back, you know, long story short, you know, I went back up there the next day into his basement.
Starting point is 00:34:43 And, you know, we did talk about a whole lot of things. Just you and him? Just me and him. We went down into the basement. Mom and dad stayed upstairs with Joanne. And, you know, we were down there probably. maybe an hour and a half. But, you know, we started talking about a lot of things.
Starting point is 00:35:02 But at the end of it, he said, well, I think if you're going to quit, he said, I'm just going, I think I'll just quit too. You know, and. That sounds like some Andy Griffith's show, reverse psychology I was putting on you there. Yes, I mean, he, yeah, no, it was a Jedi mind trick for, I mean, no doubt. So I started like, well, you can't do that coach. I mean, you know, you can't. quit. You're Ricky Pee. And he
Starting point is 00:35:29 is like, well, yeah, he said, you know, if you don't want to, if you ain't going to stick it out, then I think I'll just quit to them. We'll just quit together. We'll have a press conference and call it. Well, I said, we can't do that. And, you know, and so he said,
Starting point is 00:35:44 well, I mean, will you stay with the team? And I said, coach, all I need to hear is that you want me on this team. You know, I said, I grew up dreaming of playing here, and I love this place, and I'll give it everything and have given it everything that I've gotten. But I just need to know that you want me.
Starting point is 00:36:04 And he said, we want you. And so we hugged and cried and carried on. And we went upstairs and, you know, told Mom and Dad, you know, so I stayed in Lexington and the rest is history. But that did happen. Wow. Buck, what would you have done if he'd come back and had told you he'd quit the team? Well, I'll be honest with you.
Starting point is 00:36:24 I saw the transformation from the time he left. Clay County to the time he went to Rick Petino's boot camp down here. And like when Richie left, don't get me wrong, Richie had more talent than, you know, he was not the most in-shaped player I'd ever seen, but he could play ball. And when they took him down there, the first time I'd seen him when he came back, I was up at the top of his hill, and he lives up on a pretty big hill. And he had a bunch of guys in there, and they was rabbit hunting or something. and here he comes running up that hill with the shotgun,
Starting point is 00:36:58 and he run right past me, and right on up the hill, and I stood there talking to Richard, and I said, who was that? You know, I mean, you know, if the court had been more than 90 feet in high school, you'd have trouble. But it was amazing, the transformation, you know,
Starting point is 00:37:16 and, I mean, he was in the best shape of his life at that time, and I guess we have to thank Rock Oliver for that. Yep. Mention this hill. You've told the story before. I said heel. He did say heel. I made it two syllables there.
Starting point is 00:37:32 You've told them the past, but you grew up shooting on the side of a hill. Shouldn't your conditioning be the best if you're chasing rebounds down the hill like that? I didn't miss that many. I guess I'll set you up for that one. But, you know, Coach Keith and Coach Petino were, I mean, there were a lot of similarities in the way that they did things. because both were Uber successful at what they did. But Coach Keith didn't believe, you know, he played college basketball on a small scale. And he said, I remember our coaches and how they would run us and how, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:10 we just didn't have anything left. And he said, I never wanted my players to, you know, I want to keep their legs. And so he believed in playing into shape. And so, you know, my last couple of years, in high school. I mean, you were in shape enough to play his style, but it was, we didn't run and press and play the style that Coach Petino played, and it was completely different.
Starting point is 00:38:38 You know, I watched the kids warm up, you know, and like they'll be shooting from all over. Well, if you played for Coach Keith and he came out there and you was not shooting from where you was going to be shooting in a game, you was in trouble. You know, like, if one of your six-one sense, is out there shooting a three-pointer, he's in trouble. The game has changed a whole lot.
Starting point is 00:39:03 But, like, Coach Keith had his players. I mean, you didn't go out if he caught you at the ballpark shooting from where you wouldn't be shooting in a game because his whole offense, it revolved around, I mean, it was well-thought-out and playing. Every time you was going to get a shot, he was going to get you an open shot, and you was expected to make that open shot.
Starting point is 00:39:27 And that's how he worked. I mean, he worked on percentages, and like Rich you'll tell you, I mean, it was very effective, and especially when you've got guys that can do it. Well, he took people and put them in positions, and, you know, that was where they did stuff from that position. Everybody had a role, and, you know, you learned to play that role. but if your shots were coming from, you know,
Starting point is 00:39:55 two to eight feet from the basket, if he goes by and sees you shooting threes, he's going to come down there and ask you. He said, how many times you're going to shoot that shot in the game? I mean, you couldn't hardly even act a fool around him, you know, just playing around shooting from the center line or whatever. It was just crazy. Buck and I've done that a few times,
Starting point is 00:40:18 but I throw the left-handed hook on him from a three-quarter court. You made two in a row. Yeah, I said you'll never do that again, and he throwed it up there and hit it again. Hit it again. Sounds about right. Doesn't that stink growing up with, like, the guy that can, like, is this the best? Yeah. He can't beat him in anything.
Starting point is 00:40:36 Yeah. Well, he didn't win that much at home now. Okay. I forgot. Yeah, you were blocking his shot. You had the size of them. Before we get away from the Rock Oliver's story, I got to ask you, what was your relationship like with him after?
Starting point is 00:40:48 that then? Was he still as hard on you or did things change after that incident? Well, Rock and I were always, we had a good relationship. I mean, I think that we spent so much time together we had to like each other. But he still worked you as hard? Well, I think that he, you know, Coach Petino told me. He said, you know, I should have called him off and I didn't. You know, he was taking the heat, you know, because he said, I had him pushing you, and you were doing good, you were doing what you were supposed to, and I forgot to call him off.
Starting point is 00:41:29 Well, thanks. And he just kept on. But he took, you know, he took the blame for it. But Brock Oliver and I, I mean, you know, we always had a great relationship. He, a rock was. He's still around. Oh, he's still around. He still looks the same.
Starting point is 00:41:43 Still looks the same. Yeah, when they hired Pope, we was down there, he made Richie do 20 push him. It's neat hearing these stories. We'll have more coming up. It's nice confirming that Richie's career got restored in Rick Petino's basement, and I'd tell you what, if your basement needs restoration, how about calling people at serve pro? Shereyton played the same
Starting point is 00:46:52 song as that commercial. I was like, wait a minute. Did I zone out? Thank you. First, Drew Franklin, Brian Lemon, Richie Farmer,
Starting point is 00:47:00 Buck Stivers. We're at KS. Bar and Girl. For a second there, guys, I thought I zoned out. Me too. I thought it was still the commercial and Shannon yells go.
Starting point is 00:47:07 Nice little trick there, Shannon. That commercial, we were saying, he gets us every time. We throw our headsets on. We feel like we're coming back. But Shannon actually punked to me
Starting point is 00:47:17 and played this one. as the Ramon song. I would still be sitting here staring out at Broadway, just watching cars go by. All right, we're back. 859-2-8-7. We got lots more fun stories coming from Richie and Buck. But, Shannon, let's knock out a few phone calls. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:33 Let's start with Baker. Baker, thanks for calling in. Got a question for Richie. Behind-the-scenes story of Bobby Keith and do you wish he coached, Trey? Oh, my gosh. I would have loved to have had him coached my son. but I don't know. There's a lot of Bobby Key stories,
Starting point is 00:47:58 but I can't think of anything right offhand that, you know, that people would like to hear. But sometimes when people, you know, reminds you of something that happened, then you can tell the behind the scenes. But to my son, Trey, you know, he was 6'4 and a quarter. You know, he could handle the, ball decent, but he was a great shooter, and he had unlimited range.
Starting point is 00:48:27 But he could pull up, he could go right, left. I mean, he could do it all. And if he would have played for Bobby Keith, I think he could have been something special. I told him. I appreciate the call on the phone call. Yeah, he had the ability to make them forget about me. He could have, you know, he could have played anywhere. I was at some of those games where he was trying to make his run of the Sweet 16.
Starting point is 00:48:48 What was it like being a dad in the crowd? You've got your own legendary Sweet 16 career, but was it hard to sit there watching him play for Clay County? Much harder sitting in the stands as a dad than it is to be out there. Amen. Because out on the floor, I felt like that I had control. I could do something about it. Over there, you're just, you know, you have no control.
Starting point is 00:49:12 But his one time that he played, you know, they played Cove Cath, and, you know, they lost. I want to say they lost by two, but had them, should have beat them. Actually should have beat them. But Trey had, I think, 19 points, 11 rebounds, you know, had a nice game. He was just a sophomore that year.
Starting point is 00:49:34 So he was a nice player. He went to West Alabama and didn't stay but a semester and didn't work out. But he could have played somewhere. It's good another call. Shannon. Bob and James Town. Yeah. Bob, you can say whatever you want with me here.
Starting point is 00:49:54 What's going on, Bob? If you spent much time down there on the lake, James Town? Well, I've been down there a few times. I haven't been down there in a while, though. Most of the time when I go to Lake Cumberland, I go over to Conley Bottom or Lee's Ford or somewhere over there. Yeah. on the Somerset side, but certainly a beautiful lake. Well, the West End's the best end.
Starting point is 00:50:20 Of course, we got done there 76 Falls. That's a nice party spot. But then up there at the other end, the party cove up on South Fork. Anyway, that was a great story you had about Patino. I mean, I know it's one of the challenges in your life, what you were facing that, whether to stay or go. but we're glad you stayed good talking to you Richie
Starting point is 00:50:44 yeah thanks Bob I appreciate your call that means a whole lot and you know growing up and as a kid I I mean I can remember just dreaming of having the opportunity to play at Kentucky and you know I was one of the very fortunate
Starting point is 00:51:00 few that got an opportunity to live that and you know I was very blessed and I'm thankful every day we're going to hear a lot more stories from these guys Ron, I appreciate you booking another good guest for us. What we got tomorrow? Big show coming up.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Well, tomorrow, we've done a show at my house. We've done a show at your house. We've done a show at Matt's house. Tomorrow, for the first time, we're doing a show at Shannon's house. And he's Man Cave in Mount Washington. I love it. Shannon's going to drive the show. Don't spoil your topics, but how much of it is alien-based?
Starting point is 00:51:34 Oh, I don't have any topics yet. What are you talking about? You guys have topics for these shows? No, I have nothing written down yet. I have no idea what we're going to talk about, but, you know, listen tomorrow and we'll figure it out as we go. That's one of the few things about this show. We kind of just riff, and, you know, we never know what direction the show is going into. So what do you guys want for breakfast tomorrow? Do you have any requests? Should I get donuts? No donuts. No, no, no, no, don't know.
Starting point is 00:51:55 I was going to ask, it's close to the public, but do we have full access to your fridge while we're there? I might just stay all day. Yeah, yeah, plenty of Shannon, the dudes brew in there, you know, just pace yourself. Did you save any of those country ham biscuits from hand days? No, no, no, no, they're a long gone. We get a little old. We got another hour here before that. Drew Ryan, Richie and Buck. We're at KS Bar and Grill.
Starting point is 00:52:13 We'll be right back on KSR. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
