Starting point is 00:03:41 Drew Franklin got some breaking news shranan running on ah Duke basketball has announced they are naming Jason Tatum chief basketball officer to help John Shire with recruiting and help him pick players every year to go to Duke. I'm sure that's a completely symbolic job, but I still would say that's a very smart thing to do. And I think Kentucky probably needs to do one of those at some point. I think a lot of schools are doing it.
Starting point is 00:04:18 I don't think Mark Pope or John Shire, for that matter, needs a player to help them do it, but I do think having the symbolism of having Jason Tatum would be good. Kentucky, you know, who would you pick? Shea Gildes-Alexandum is throwing his name out there. You know, somebody who's popular, like as popular as Jason Tatum right now, it makes a difference with these young kids. Who would you pick?
Starting point is 00:04:40 I mean, your choices would be like... You got a lot of options. Anthony, Devin Booker, Carl, Shea Gilgis Alexander. Those are probably the four that would make the most sense. You also want to get somebody that's like longevity. I know in the shoe world, Shea Gilgis Alexander released his first shoe, and it was like very popular,
Starting point is 00:04:59 even though I think it's really... ugly between me and you. But it got a lot of attention. I don't know. Who would you pick if you were going to do Kentucky's? It's tough. Could we have just like co-GMs? No, I think you've got to have one.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Co-GMs don't work. I would lean Carl because I think he would actually be the most involved. But do you think Carl's like, he's the least cool of the group for the, for the, I love Carl. He's a number one pick and an NBA All-Star right now. I just, nothing against the other guys. see the others actually getting as involved as car. But I don't want them to do anything. We don't need them to do anything. We just need him to answer the phone. Yeah. Well, I mean, I think Carl would be like, let me call recruit. Like, I think Carl would actually take a proactive. Yeah. Okay. It's very common,
Starting point is 00:05:44 though. Trey Young's the GM of Oklahoma now. Steph Curry is the GM of Davidson. In football, we just hosted Eastern Michigan. Max Crosby's, their GM. Lots of schools are just doing it for the name recognition and to help with recruiting. Yeah. Well, I would love love to see, I'd love to see us do something. I think that's smart for Duke. I think it's smart to have a guy like that to put him in that role. Jason Tatum is one of the most popular players, so if you've got them. But we should do something. We got so many. We should do one. What if why? It's easy. What if Cal got one of them to do it for Arkansas? No, we couldn't have that. Can't do that. That would be bad. People think they got mad about
Starting point is 00:06:24 Reed Shepherd's shirt. Yeah. The Eulis thing, we can excuse a little bit because he's trying to start a coaching career. If you're like an honorary just helping Arkansas out as a side mission, then no, we can't have you doing that. I do have to go back. I still can't believe Reed Shepherd did. People still bring it up. I mean, I forgive the kid. By the way, he started in their first preseason game and looked good. He looked really good. He might end up starting in the season. He'll do. He is starting. They've already named it because why you were gone Van Fleet towards ACL two weeks ago. They don't have another one. So he's starting. Yeah, he's the guy.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Well, and I love him, but I still can't believe he wore that Arkansas shirt. If he just would have flipped it, put a Kentucky shirt on Arkansas pants? No, he didn't need to wear it at all. He didn't need, we were playing them. You know, these people are married to get. Do you ever put a Tennessee shirt on? Thank you very much. That's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And they're married. Look at her face. Oh, he does? Oh, he's lying? Well, hold on. Wait a minute. Hold on. That was her birthday.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Yeah, but she can't. can't wear a Tennessee shirt ever. Although you said she wears a Kentucky shirt sometimes. He's got a little Tennessee outfit he puts on on her birthday. He's allowed one a year. All right, I'll let you. I'll let you buy. I can tell he didn't like the she that she let that out.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Walking home. We have one more piece of breaking news. Running on, nah. It has been announced that the U.F.L., the United Football League, is moving a team to Kentucky. They will be in Louisville. they will be called the Louisville Kings. Do you like it?
Starting point is 00:08:02 The Louisville Kings, a UFL team, will be in the United Football League, which is what they're going to play in the spring. I like the Louisville as a team. I wish the name that had a little more fun with it, with all the Kentucky culture. You could go several different directions. So I don't love the name Kings, but I am glad there's a local team. Will you support the Louisville Kings?
Starting point is 00:08:22 I will probably go. I'm so glad the team is coming to Kentucky. He's having a team here. I think's pretty cool. Not crazy about the nickname, but I'll support the team. You're going off of King Louis, right, from Louis? Oh, is that what it is? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I mean, that would make sense. Oh, you're just guessing. There's a King Louis and Louisville connection, right? I don't know. One of the King Louis is. There's like 50 of them. Okay. But whichever one is.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Yeah, I would have liked either alliteration, so like the Louisville Leopards or make it like the Kentucky Kings. Yeah, that's the logo right there. It's green. Or make it like the Kentucky. Kings or like the Louisville bourbons, you know, just something, I'm with you. Kings is kind of a boring name. I have the explanation on the website.
Starting point is 00:09:06 It celebrates the deep history and heritage of one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains. It's name, Shannon's right, name builds off the royal connection to Francis King Louis. Look at Shannon getting it right. Did you read that or did you guess? No, I didn't even know about it until you just mentioned it. That was breaking news to me. I didn't know that they were getting a team. Wow.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And a sport and the derby known as the sport of Kings. They combined them. Okay. That seems a little forced, but whatever. I'm good they have a team, though. And the color is neutral. It's green. Like, if it was red, I probably would have had a hard time getting involved.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Color's not going to upset anybody. I'll be a fan. I'm excited about it. I think it's cool. Hopefully it works. 859-280-2287. Before I go, the phones, we've got to talk about you inalarm.com. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:55 All right, we brought this up on the pregame show, but it needs to be repeated here. First of all, good news. Ryan Lemon gets a national endorsement for Alarm.com. How about that? Right now, you can go on Instagram, you can go on the TikTok, you can go on Facebook, you can go on ads. There is Ryan Lemon's face as the new face of Alarm.com. That's good. You see something like that, you go, wow, it's got to be big money, right?
Starting point is 00:10:23 Things are moving in Ryan's direction. Watch out. You know what? Life is coming my way. And then you told us on the pregame show that you did the ad for a set of doggy toys, which is such a Ryan Lemon thing to do. Not money, not even a gift certificate. Doggy toys.
Starting point is 00:10:47 How did you come to that as your payment? You know, they approached me about doing his ad campaign. and I just said I would do it for free. I mean, they're the... Why? The system saved my house. It saved everything. So I was willing to kind of...
Starting point is 00:11:01 Because I'm an endorser for their local affiliate, Silent Guard. So I work with Silent Guard here in town. But did you ever think, like, you're going to be using my face? Yeah, a lot. This face has value. Well, I don't know about that. Well, no, this is... They wouldn't use it if...
Starting point is 00:11:14 What do you think name image likeness means? Not my face. Well, then why do they use you? They seem to like it since it's everywhere. Yeah, they could have used any... somebody's face. They chose your face. So I didn't even ask for the box of doggy toys. They sent that on their own account. So you didn't even negotiate them? They swed the deal. They felt so bad. So you negotiated for nothing. Nothing. Yes. And then they threw in doggy toys. They threw in a box of doggy toys.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Mario Solom at my house this weekend. There's like $200 worth of doggy toys. Oh, well, well, if it's $200 worth of doggy toys. Speaking of Ryan's face on this picture that you tweeted out, Matt. Oh, now I'm going to get to the, hang on, don't do the caption yet, because I'm going to bring that. I don't know, but I wasn't going to ask about the caption. Okay, go ahead. I was just wondering, did they Photoshop his face or alter something on his face? I think they altered your face. I don't think, I need to look at this.
Starting point is 00:12:05 I don't think they altered it. They didn't. They just told me to look really serious. They said, this is, are your eyes closer together? But your eyes are not that close together. Uh-oh. I don't know. I don't look at my eyes.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Shannon, I'm with you. Yeah, I don't think that's how you look. Something's awful a little bit. Did they, like, give them, like, a filter to slim his face down a little bit? Yeah, but, like, you're... First of all, the caption, serious security for serious people. Oh, man, that's a serious look right there. You are not serious.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Oh, I'm so serious. Like, you're the least serious person I know. Serious security for serious people? Oh, that's a serious look right there. I am dead serious about seriousness and serious alarm systems. Well, they're certainly getting their money's worth for that look. But, Shannon, I'm with you. It's not as bad a Photoshop as...
Starting point is 00:12:52 that real estate picture. Exactly train. Where they photoshopped his head on somebody else's body? Yes, where they literally took a really handsome in-shape person. And they just put rides and on it. Headless salesman. Yeah, I don't think it's as bad. I don't think it's as bad as that one.
Starting point is 00:13:09 But I do think that might be photoshop. He's got more hair on his head, it looks like. Oh, did they give you more hair? I think they gave him more hair. Oh, that does look like more hair. That is more hair. They gave you Peyton Manning's haircut, too. He did, yeah, the comb over.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Well, you got a free glamour shot out of it if you want to frame that. I just felt like, you know, when they approached me to doing it, I felt like this is, I owed them a great debt of gratitude, so why not? Did you know the reach that they were going to use it? No. Okay. But see, I understand what you're saying about they owed you a debt of gratitude, but I just want to remind you because I'm trying to help you business-wise.
Starting point is 00:13:45 You initially use their product because you were an endorser. Correct. of the product. Correct. And instead of, I don't know, did they give you money or did they give you trade? Trade. So you got the product for endorsing them, which is a good product, right? Oh, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:14:01 And it did save your house. Save my house. But you already had done the ads for the product. Correct. Now this was a new deal. With alarm.com, not even silent guards. They went bigger. Silent guard.
Starting point is 00:14:17 This is alarm.com. This is national. So did you think like, okay, we're square for this? Here's a new thing where you're going to give me a comb over and you're going to make me serious. Maybe we have a different view for this one. Did you think about that? You're leaving out the box of doggie toys.
Starting point is 00:14:38 I got a box of doggy toys. That was thrown in after the fact, though. Yeah, that wasn't even part of the consideration for the deal. Even Mitch Barnhart thinks you're a good negotiator. I had no idea. It's going to be everywhere. The grad negotiator, excuse me. I didn't know it's going to be all over the place like it has been.
Starting point is 00:14:55 I just thought it was going to be, you know. You just thought they were going to use it like on brochures? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. What's out there now? That's one of the things, though, that when you do this, you ask where are you going to use it? Because the more they're going to use it, the more that should be in Uncle Ryan's pocket.
Starting point is 00:15:12 I probably did not use proper negotiating tactics. And I said, yeah, I'll do whatever you want. Yeah. Oh, you started with, yeah, do whatever you want. They said, we want to, you know, do an ad campaign with your story. I'm like, yeah, whatever. I'll do whatever you want to do. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:15:24 They flew a crew in from Boston. Okay, how much you think that cost? Well, I'm sure it wasn't cheap. So maybe they could have given you a few thousand dollars. They probably paid the crew. Paid the crew. Yeah, the crew didn't do it for doggy toys. Probably not.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Airline flight, hotel room. Brian's talent fee has gone from $33 to $0. So do anything for free. Unbelievable. I love you, but I feel like if I'm on a national ad campaign with my face, and Peyton Manning's comb over, that you should be able to get some money. That is a handsome-looking face right there.
Starting point is 00:15:55 That's a serious handsome face. Who's up next? Let's go to Robbie. Robbie, go ahead, Robbie. Hey, good morning, guys. Hope everything's good. Just talk a little bit about football, but, I mean, everybody's checked out on football.
Starting point is 00:16:10 I mean, I watched a little bit of the Georgia game, but I knew when Georgia got 21 points, the game was over. We weren't going to score that much. Yes. In that way, for the last several years. I mean, it's time for Stubes to go. I mean, I know we owe him a lot of money, but we got to give something else.
Starting point is 00:16:26 I mean, everybody's checked out. Everybody's ready for basketball. We need somebody on the football side, like we have on the basketball side, that's dedicated. Drew Blue, Kentucky is going to put everything that got into it to make its program. It's not never going to be at the top of the SEC,
Starting point is 00:16:41 but at least you'd be competitive and not be the last in stock of the SEC. Yeah, we can't be definitively the worst team in the SEC. Appreciate the call, which is what we are now. We're definitively the worst team. team and you could make an argument that even that with the exception of like the last year or two of joker we were not normally the definitively the worst team but we're definitively the worst team right now in the conference and uh you know maybe that changes i kind of doubt it i think
Starting point is 00:17:06 we're definitively the worst team that's got to change that's the one thing that that can't happen i do think for the first time i will say this for the first time since these conversations have started taking place i do believe that if If Mitch Barnhart decides to make a change, the money will be there. I've always thought that that would not be the case. I think money is a factor on what they do, for sure. But the idea, which is what I've had for a long time, that they just could not raise that money,
Starting point is 00:17:40 I think they could if they felt like it was the way to go. I don't think money is a factor. Don't get me wrong. It's not that money's not going to matter. It's like in baseball. They say tie goes to the runner. Tie goes is going to go to saving $37 million. But if they have to do it, Ryan, I do think they'll have the money.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Does the buyout money go down after the season? Like, is it worth? It's like 70% of whatever's remaining. So over time. It's not over time. It's due in two months. No, but I mean, if you fired him a year from now, it would be down a little bit. It's just 70% of what he's owed.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Yeah. Gotcha. But, I mean, it's due immediately. which is part of the issue. That's right. You can't amortize it over time. It is due immediately. Now through October 31st,
Starting point is 00:18:27 boxes of beef from Noche Linda Farms are 15% off the regular price with the code KSR. Again, this is what the burgers you're eating here are made of and you can get them in your house. So 15% off, use my code KSR. And if you get over $250 in beef in Kentucky and surrounding states, shipping is free.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Free local delivery, they'll bring it to you. Whoa. For over $175. So they'll show up beef in hand. Whoa, like you do. Nochalinda Farms.com. It's Noce Linda Farms.
Starting point is 00:19:02 The beef is finished on grass with a special blend of local grains. The animals are not in a feed lot. They don't use steroids. They don't use antibiotics. It's just good Kentucky beef. It is Noce Linda Farms. Nochalinda Farms.com.
Starting point is 00:19:16 We'll take a break and be right back here at KS. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real.
Starting point is 00:19:48 From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. SportsSlice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slic Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience
Starting point is 00:20:21 in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:20:38 and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:20:53 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose. On my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, fam? This Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:21:14 And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I gotta manipulate the game.
Starting point is 00:21:33 We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's gonna be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nasree. He has to guard Julius Randall. Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court, licking his fingers while he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey everyone, it's Ryder Strong and Wilfredel from PodMeets World. And now the Podmeets Twirled podcast.
Starting point is 00:22:26 We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of this show. I'm just going to remind you, I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Did people not like it? Like what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion in the 50th season from the final attempts at gameplay to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of. Ha, who. Ah, ha, ooh. Again, we are experts.
Starting point is 00:23:05 So make sure to tune into Pod Meets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to Pod Meets Twirled on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back to East Sports Radio here at KS Bar and Gris. Thank you folks very much for coming out and joining us. We'll be here for the rest of the afternoon. Then you got all day tomorrow's Wings Day, so glad to be back going here. I want to talk just a second on this fan fest coming up Saturday. Here's the schedule.
Starting point is 00:23:36 It's at the exhibit center, so it's at the thing that's attached to Rupp Arena. It opens at noon. From 1230 to 1, Mark Pope will be on the main stage talking. Then Kenny Brooks comes after that. Then the women's basketball team, and then they will. sign autographs and then the men's basketball team and they will sign autographs. So that's how the day goes. I think this is going to be, I think this really is an awesome event. And I think it's exactly what UK basketball and UK athletics should do more of. And I hope people go because I think
Starting point is 00:24:10 if they do, you will see more and more of this stuff. You know, if you're like me and you've kind of said, we need to do more stuff for the common fan. This is it. It'd be nice if they got a little more notice. I mean, they announce it on Monday for Saturday, but nevertheless, it's happening, and people, I hope, embrace it. Yeah, you know, people miss, you know, the madness campout. It was kind of a fan player event. This is a good substitution. I love this idea, trying to get the fans back engaged with the players on the team. That's the big thing.
Starting point is 00:24:37 At the campout, you actually got to connect with the players a little bit. You know, every year they'd make the rounds of pizza. They'd show up, played cornhole with you at your tent if you were there, and that's been lost the last couple years. So this doesn't replace that, but at least gives you a chance to actually meet the guys instead of just watching them dance for a moment and play their practice. Last night, the Jaguars beat the Chiefs. Liam Cohen is 4 and 1. Liam Cohen.
Starting point is 00:25:02 That is amazing. Is it a check in Mark Stoop's box that he hired Liam Cohen, or is it an X in his box that he hired him? And we still the second time. We still the second time didn't have a good offense, which is it. I'll give him a check. We're very critical of his offense and hiring a lot of coordinators, so I've at least got to applaud him for finding Liam. I didn't love the way Liam left after he said he's here to plant roots or whatever it was.
Starting point is 00:25:33 But you can't blame him. Yeah, and the time, what was it, February, but it's the NFL calling, and look where he is now. So I give Stoops a check for having him, even though it was short-lived. I mean, you really can't blame it. He's done exactly. I mean, this is why he left, was to get ahead. coaching job, he's gotten it. And so I don't know how you could complain at all.
Starting point is 00:25:50 I give him two checks. I hired the guy twice. You know, he came in the first year with Will Levis, kind of revitalized the program a little bit, a good shot in the arm. I think he really did a good thing with Devin Lary. He just was hurt. You know, we just kind of struggled through most of that season. But I give Stoops two check marks for hiring him.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Yeah. Are you pulling for him? Like he was here two different times. Are you pulling for Liam? I'm obviously Josh Hines-Allen is on the team as well, but pulling for him? It's a little different for me. I'm a titan, so I need them to lose every possible game. I've always won the Jaguars to lose.
Starting point is 00:26:20 But I'm not like anti-Lean Cohen. Like I was happy for him last night. Remember, I told you all money line. Jaguars last one, anybody do it? You know what I did not? I thought the Chiefs were going to win. But I was generally excited for him. As a division rival, I'm not going to openly cheer for him,
Starting point is 00:26:33 but I was happy to see him get a big win. What do you think of that final play where Trevor Lawrence falls down and then falls down twice and then gets up and scores a touchdown? That's got to be one of the craziest endings to a game of all time. Yeah, a goofy little bit. blooper there with 25 seconds left. He kind of looked dead there when he's on the ground, hops right up. I saw the Manning cast replay of it, too. They were going crazy, also thinking he didn't have a chance. The Manning cast was great last night, by the way.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Shannon, have you watched the show where it's like the Eli Manning commercial? Has anybody watched that? Steve Zon plays the coach. I've heard it's really good. What's it called? It's called Chad Powers. You remember they had the Eli commercials where he put on the fake nose and he acted like he was a quarterback for Penn State? Yeah. This is a show of that. It's got that... Did an entire show off of that?
Starting point is 00:27:20 Yeah, it's not Elon Manning. It stars that dude that Sidney, Glenn Powell. It looks a lot like me. Glenn Powell. Does he look like you? When our shirts are off, people have asked me before. Whoa, was that Glenn Powell?
Starting point is 00:27:33 No, that's true. You know, I have never heard that. But yeah, so it's... I want to watch it. But Steve Zon plays the coach in it. I was wondering if it would be good, and I've had three or four friends who've watched it and loved it. It's getting a lot of Ted Lasso comparisons.
Starting point is 00:27:49 It's kind of a feel-good show, so I'm looking forward to starting it. I just haven't done it yet. Well, Josh Allen, by the way, our Josh Allen is an absolute machine. I mean, he really is. Like, if you watch him, the teams have to, like, run away from him. And when he gets in open space, forget it. I mean, they ran a play where they didn't block him, and Peyton Manning was like, are these people insane?
Starting point is 00:28:13 How do you not block him? one of the five best defensive ends in the league. He bounced off a block and made a big tackle in the backfield too late in the game that not many people could pull off. You know, he's special. We saw a lot of that here, and it hadn't changed in the NFL. Yep. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:28:27 Adam. Adam. Adam. Hey, what's up, Matt? We've got a half legal question, half UK sports question. So let's say, you know, Mark Stubbs doesn't want to try to take a negotiated buyout. Yes. What is to prevent Mitch Barnhart to say, okay, well, we're going to give him.
Starting point is 00:28:46 this much to women's basketball, this much to baseball, all the rest to men's basketball. And your NIL, you know, the rev- Nothing would stop him from doing that, except that would be a really horrible decision. I mean, like, he could. There's nothing that requires schools to give football. I mean, you could give football nothing in NIL if you wanted to,
Starting point is 00:29:08 but I think that would be a dumb decision. You'd be basically announcing to the world that you don't care about your program. I mean, maybe don't follow it through, but you can make the threat of like, you know, Mark, if you don't want to try to take the spy out, we can negotiate. Yeah, I just think, I appreciate the call. Legally, is there anything that would stop them from doing it? No. I mean, UK doesn't have to give football anything. But as a practical matter, that would be cutting off your nose, I think, to spot your face if you were to do that.
Starting point is 00:29:40 We'll take a break. Be right back. S. KS.R. injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. You know, Shannon, I fought this song for a long time. Like, I just said, this song just felt like the kind of song I wouldn't like. And then all of a sudden, I think I watched a game and everybody sang it.
Starting point is 00:30:07 And now I kind of really like it. Mr. Brightside is a song? Yeah, I just always fought it. Because it was like one of those things that everybody sings at bars and stuff. and I'm always like, oh, you know. I don't know, because it would always, everybody pointed each other and all that stuff, but now I've given in. This is a great song. We put it on our set list just because people love it so much.
Starting point is 00:30:26 You did a good job with it. I heard you, the last time I heard you perform, this was the last, was you did Mr. Brightside, and I thought, oh, Shannon does this very well. I didn't know you were so anti-killers. No, I'm not, I'm pro it now, but I was anti for a long time, and then I was like, this is just a great song,
Starting point is 00:30:43 and it's going to last forever. You know what I mean? Like, it's going to be one of those songs that people are going to be singing for 30 years. This will be one that they sing. I saw a clip just yesterday. I think it was at the Michigan football game, but there's an elderly man. I mean, he's got to be at least 80. But he has a printed out piece of paper with the lyrics to the song.
Starting point is 00:31:03 He's holding it at the game so he can participate. Is that right? Is it? But it's about drugs, right? I've never taken time to really think about it. I don't know. I think it's about an affair, but I can. be wrong. Oh. What are the lyrics? Well, we've got to ask the old man that printed them out.
Starting point is 00:31:23 Hello there, Sonny. What are the lyrics to Mr. Brightside? I'm telling you, I think it's, it starts coming out of my cage. I know that much. Yeah. And I've been doing just fine, started out with a kiss. How did it end up like this. It was only a kiss. Now I'm falling asleep. She's calling a cab. While he's having a smoke and she's taking a drag. Now they're going to bed and my stomach is sick and it's all in my head, but she's touching his chest now. He takes. off her dress now let me go oh so it's about an affair okay that all right that makes it oh I'm thinking of Dr. Feelgood no I am it's good probably about drugs exactly Mr. Brightside is about a fair doctor feel good who went to you know he went got more
Starting point is 00:32:01 education that's about that's about that's right if I'm 9-280 2287 let's quick a couple of things in the rest of college football we didn't get to yesterday James Franklin's the worst right yes he's the worst out like who's worse him Dabo. James Franklin. It's a good. It's a good. It's funny.
Starting point is 00:32:19 People just hate James Franklin so much. Yeah. Even going back to Vanderbilt when Shannon, when he was Shannon's coach.
Starting point is 00:32:25 I think Dabo's the worst. I'm with you. I put Dabo the worst. But there are people who really don't, how does he lose that game? UCLA was awful.
Starting point is 00:32:34 UCLA lost by like 20 to UNLV and 30 to New Mexico. And then he goes and loses and not just loses. They were down huge most of the game. And just the
Starting point is 00:32:44 fact that it was... And nobody was there. That and... That's what... What is the telling factor more than anything? A little sunshine over there calling plays. He couldn't even figure out how to get the headset to work because he was in way over his head and he hangs 40, whatever, on you. Yeah, I mean, they look like a child was calling plays for UCLA.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Like, it'd be one thing if he lost because the environment was insane and, like, you couldn't hear yourself talk, and it was... He lost in an empty Rose Bowl. It was empty, and they still lost. You know, Kentucky fans don't like the guy because what happened between him and Mark Stubbson when he was a coach of Vanderbilt. I think that carries over for a lot of us our feeling to him today. But he's hated nationally. It's not just Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:33:29 Like, everyone seems to take joy in him failing. Well, remember, was it last season or two years ago, they had a very serious issue at Penn State, and he stood there and made, like, the SID take questions at the podium. Like, he wouldn't even make a statement. I think a player had done something kind of bad. But he had like a smirk on his face. Like, I'm not even going to address this. And he made some staff members stand up there and give a statement.
Starting point is 00:33:50 What about Archmany? Obviously, we're going to see him here in two weeks. Are we catching Texas at the right time? I said this a few weeks ago, that Texas might be one of the more beatable teams left on the schedule. I didn't really believe it, but now that they've lost to Florida, I think they are. I was listening to a podcast where somebody was saying, like, they think the pressure, and this wasn't somebody just spouting off. They said that they had talked to people at Texas that the pressure of all this is just too much for him.
Starting point is 00:34:17 The pressure of being a manning, being at Texas, all the national attention. Then he starts and he struggles that first time and it kind of gets in his head. And then a lot of people around Texas are kind of worried that it's just too much pressure. I mean, that's what's tough. There are positives about being a manning, but then there might be a negative when things don't go well. For whatever the reason is, it definitely something's not working right. And if he's having some mental issues, you know, I feel sorry for this. They didn't say mental issues.
Starting point is 00:34:44 They just said pressure. Like it was just, but it also, like, there are other people who said he was never good to begin with. It's just people just said, well, he's Arch Manning, so he must be great. That he hasn't panned out. It looks like he's not ready. But their offensive line, to be Texas has been terrible. They're getting a lot of criticism. And then, I think it was Sparrier.
Starting point is 00:35:03 Someone this week made the great point. Like, if Arch is this big husband, why wasn't he playing last year? Yeah, I said that to be in the year. What about Belich? I'm loving every second of that. again. I mean, just getting crushed. There was a story that came out in the local newspaper in North Carolina yesterday that
Starting point is 00:35:21 said the team, like, hate, like all of the assistant coaches are either his relatives or the GM's relatives. And that, like, the players really like Belichick, but that they think everyone else on the staff is a joke. And so they don't listen to them. that Mike Lombardi, who's the GM, apparently is just hated by everybody. I guess during NIL, when the transfer portal opened, as part of their NIL negotiations, this was a really stupid thing to do.
Starting point is 00:35:51 They agreed to take like their 10 top transfers, and to give them to come, they said their parents would have field access to the games, they would get their own parking spots, and then they didn't give the other players that. So you had a situation where Belichick's guys get different treatment than the other guys. And Ryan, it's just led to a disaster. I didn't know that part of the story.
Starting point is 00:36:12 So, yeah, you're losing games on the field. It sounds like you're losing the locker room, too, so things are not going to get better anytime soon if you're split divide down the locker room. He has three family members on staff, two sons and a son-in-law. There's a lot of Lombardies, too. And a girlfriend on staff, too. So there's a few failed NFL people in there, too.
Starting point is 00:36:31 So back to the big question. Is Jordan Hudson dating Bill Belichick one year from now, considering they're losing? I'm going to say yes. You think it's love? No, I don't, but I mean, she's just... Gold Digger. Yeah, she can do whatever she wants right now. What wouldn't she?
Starting point is 00:36:45 She'll launch a new perfume. They'll have everything. I mean, she's trying to trademark Gold Digger. This is a long-term business plan. But, I mean, is it still, like, she's not going to get a lot of attention if they stink. Like, if he's gone at the end of the year... That bank account still got money in it. Maybe date Pete Carroll?
Starting point is 00:37:03 Yeah. Although he's not doing very well either. That is a good question. Listen, who would be the coach she could go to? When Andy Reid retires. Oh, she goes to date. He's got the Super Bowls. Wow.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Got the trophy cabinet. I think she's good. She moves to, listen, I would respect her if she moves from Belichick to Andy Reed. Just so obvious. As soon as Andy retires. I met him on a plane and he signed my book. Nick Saving comes back. Well, no, everybody likes his wife.
Starting point is 00:37:31 I don't know. Miss Terry. We can't be doing that to Miss Terry. What about Belichick not letting him acknowledge Drake May? on social media. That's also crazy. You know, you have, who's the only North Carolina football player? Who's an important North Carolina football player in history?
Starting point is 00:37:47 Peppers. Julius Peppers. Okay. Did L.T. go there? Where did L.T. go? It was a little before me. I think L.T. went to North Carolina. But point being, Drake may could end up being one of your best,
Starting point is 00:38:00 and the fact that you won't acknowledge him because he plays for the Patriots. Ryan, that's really petty. Very petty. You're trying to promote your program. This kid came out of your program. I don't care who he plays for now. He's a starter in the NFL. He's starting quarterback.
Starting point is 00:38:11 LT was UNC. Was he UNC? So we have three. So we have three. All right, who's next? David. David. David, go ahead, David.
Starting point is 00:38:22 Do you see these coaches' contracts changing going forward? Yes. And what I get at is, if performance-based, I mean, Mark Stopes, I like Stobs. He's brought us up here. I think he's banging his head against the ceiling at this point. But the hypocrisy of him saying, I'm not leaving. What does he not go to his if he gets a running back that ain't panning out of a quarterback, He'll encourage him getting transfer portal because he wants her spot, but he won't move around.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Well, coaches have always been hypocritical. I mean, coaches believe they get to do one thing and players don't. We've talked about that. Coaches think they should be able to break contracts and go to other schools, but if players transfer, that means they're weak and blah, blah, blah. Coaches have always been hypocritical. I do think that the change to the new NIL is going to make it to where coaches' contracts are not going to be as much money.
Starting point is 00:39:10 They're just not. I don't know that they don't. That's great. Yeah, go ahead. I want to hit you with the business sense of it. Yeah, I just wonder if that's ever going to change that trending because they hold all the power now and just like they hold school's hostage. The years of, and I appreciate the call, the years of coaches getting eight-year deals for $12 million a year. I think that's going away.
Starting point is 00:39:32 I mean, I think, you know, Nick Sabin of the world might be able to get that. But the year, the days of giving Jimbo Fisher that, James Franklin. that, Mark Stoops that. I just don't think people are going to do it anymore, Ryan. I think they're going to go, look, we've got to put our money in the players. Plus, there's a new generation of young guys that you don't have to pay as well that might be just as good. So I think that's what you're going to see.
Starting point is 00:39:59 And that's what we're going to see programs like, well, Kentucky, you know, you can save a lot of money if you go out and hire a John Summerall for next season. You know, you're going to save a lot of money. Well, forget about, like, just take somebody like Will Stein for a second. I mean, would you rather have, let's just leave Mark Stoops out of it, because I don't want it to be just about him. Take Eli Drinkowitz if you're Missouri, and Eli Drinkowitz comes and says, I want $10 million a year. But you could go get Will Stein for $3.5 million. Are you going to lock yourself into an eight-year deal with Eli Drinkwitz?
Starting point is 00:40:32 Are you going to say maybe I'll try one of these young up-and-comers? It would be hard to do, but the smart thing would be an up-and-comer, because as we've seen, with both coaches here at Kentucky in basketball and football lately, there's just a shelf life on coaching, no matter how good you have it. I also think we're going to look back and say that the NIL portal era was a chain,
Starting point is 00:40:51 it's like two completely different sports. When it happened, I said the biggest change in the history of college sports was integration. Like for me, college sports is before integration and after integration. Well, I think the second biggest is going to be before NIL and after NIL. And I think there are,
Starting point is 00:41:09 there were coaches, if you go back and read history, who simply could not coach after integration. They did not know how to do it. I think you're going to end up with a set of coaches who, when they come to NIA, they just didn't know how to do it. And so you're going to see this whole, we're already seeing it. Massive group of coaches move out, and then this new group that embrace it
Starting point is 00:41:30 and understand what it is and do it, move in, and that's going to be the future of the sport. And just the sports changing with your roster makeup, up. Like the days where Alabama would have a third-string linebacker being an NFL draft pick, you just can't stockpile them like you used to. So your first team's got to be great, because anybody you have that's sitting the bench, if they're good enough, they'll find a place to go play. You just don't have depth like you used to. What's impressive to me are the coaches who were good before this and after this.
Starting point is 00:41:57 That to me is really, Lang Kiffin. Lankiffin was good before. He's found a way to transition to be good after. I think it's going to be. But think about it. How many of those guys are out there? How many dudes that were really good in 2015 or 2017 are still good in 2025? Just look at it. Look at all the failures we're seeing or the disappointments. They all have one thing in common.
Starting point is 00:42:23 They're older guys who are really good before the portal. How many people are you seen that are really good before and after? Can you give me one? Just think about football and basketball. who's really good before and after? That's a great question. I'm just sitting here trying to think. Bill Self, although he hasn't killed it in the last two or three years.
Starting point is 00:42:48 Well, I was going to add, you know, not using names, but any coach that was already paying before an IL, and there are a lot of them. They're now struggling that it's just out in the open because that was their advantage. I think you are exactly right. Their advantage was paying, even though we don't like to admit that happened.
Starting point is 00:43:02 It was pretty widespread. Just think about if I were to have said to you, seven years ago, who are the best coaches in college basketball? Jay Wright, gone. Roy Williams, gone. Mike Cheshefsky, gone. Tony Bennett, gone. Bruce Pearl, gone.
Starting point is 00:43:17 Right? Tom Izzo, going probably in the near future. Cal probably going. Cal is probably going soon. You know who might be one that's in that group? Rick Patino. Yeah. Rick Patino might be one who actually found a way,
Starting point is 00:43:32 Ryan, to do it both ways. I think Rick Petino may be our best answer because he was successful before NIL and now he found a way to be successful after NIL. I think football, Kirby Smart, would you put him in that category? Yes. Kirby Smart I think is in the character. Kirby Smart is one for sure.
Starting point is 00:43:49 But even the guys like Ryan Day and the guy at Oregon, Laning, Kael and DeBore, they're all kind of coming to their strength after NIL. If they're not guys that were doing it before. So just an interesting thing. I don't know if that'll continue like that, but it seems to. Good question. Clayton and Kroom was founded on a simple idea. All leather goods should last a lifetime. They make everything from bags, belts, wallets, and more, and they do it right here in Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:44:18 My mom just ordered her new bag for her doctor program at Wheaton. She got a leather bag from Clayton & Kroon. That's right. Clayton & Kroom.com, C-R-U-M-E.com. Visit their flagship store on Shelby Street in Newloo. It's Clayton and Kroon. Quality leather goods built to last. We'll take a break.

Starting point is 00:46:42 And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted. this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us
Starting point is 00:47:09 on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the bar like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. You figure it out real quick. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of the show.
Starting point is 00:48:05 I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough. Did people not like it? Like what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion at the 50th season

Starting point is 00:48:50 We will be here if you want to come see us. I know a lot of people on fall break, right? Right now? Is this fall break? Last week was a lot of fall breaks, but I think our folks from Elizabethtown, they're on fall break this week. So you guys are welcome to be here. It's time for Draft Kings. Let's do a pick.
Starting point is 00:49:05 I guess we got baseball tonight. Draft Kings, go to draft kings. Go to your DK.K. app. Put in the promo code KSR. Make your pick. Let's see. The Yankees are down 2-0 to the Blue Jays. Do they get one tonight or do they get swept and the Yankees be out?
Starting point is 00:49:20 Yankees win tonight. They're home. Not getting swept. I think my guy's pitching. The dude I can't pronounce. Oh, yeah. Schlittler? Do you a try?
Starting point is 00:49:29 Hang on. Schlittler? Schlittler. No, it's Carlos Rodone. So that's, I know. him. But Schlitler is pitching tonight. But a potential elimination game in Yankee Stadium. Yankees get this one tonight. Yep, go with the Yankees. I'm going to go with the Yankees tonight. Hopefully they can get a game four and then we'll see. Weird group of teams in the AL with the Tigers,
Starting point is 00:49:49 the Mariners, and the Blue Jays. One of them is going to end up in the World Series. I've been riding some underdogs lately, as you've heard on this show. I think I'm going to take Tigers money line in the first game today. They're a dog. Yeah, but they're home, right? Yeah, they're at home. Home dog. Who's up next? Let's go to Ed. Ed, go ahead, Ed. Hey, I've got three questions for you, Matt. Well, give me your best.
Starting point is 00:50:13 We all at that time. What game do you think we have the best chance for an upset? I think the best chance for an upset for the rest of the season is still Florida. I know they beat Texas, but I think you get them in November. They're coming where it's cold. They don't do that a lot. Hopefully we haven't quit yet. Now, I mean, Texas is more of a chance than we would have ever thought.
Starting point is 00:50:37 You know, if they play Oklahoma this week and lose, their season's basically over. So maybe the whole thing collapses for them the next week. But if I were to, if you were to say, well, let me, actually, let me switch that. Best chance to win on the road at Vandy still. Even though I think Vandy's good, I think that's your best chance because you still have more talent than them, even if you don't win. And then I would say Home Florida. What about you? I don't think we stand a chance at Vandy.
Starting point is 00:51:04 I think they're more talented almost everywhere, unfortunately. Really? You don't think they don't have a chance? No. I think if a team gets to 20 points, we've lost, and Vandy is going to get 20 points. Wow. Okay. I will say Texas, which seems crazy, only because it's right in front of us.
Starting point is 00:51:20 I know it's Stoops after a by week. Stoops after a by week is not a stream. Florida would be my pick, but it's so late in the year, I worry we're going to have guys buying hot dogs again if they don't start winning before that game gets here. So a matchup, I'd go Florida, but Texas being more recent, still inspired at the moment, I'll say that's the one. I will say this.
Starting point is 00:51:39 If we lose to Texas in Tennessee back to back, which is very likely, the next game, I believe, is what? At Auburn. That's the game where, if it goes poorly, we quit. That's what worries me. I think if you lose to Texas and Tennessee, and then you go to Auburn and get blown out,
Starting point is 00:52:00 I think this whole thing just completely falls apart. Because you lost the locker room last year. If that happens again, he loses the locker room again, you had to make a change. Now, with that said, if you win one of those games, then you go, oh, we still play Vandy in Louisville, maybe we can make a bowl. I mean, that's. Louisville's a winnable game. Florida.
Starting point is 00:52:19 I mean, this schedule is awful, but it's not as awful now as it looked at the beginning of the year. I mean, it looked worse at the beginning of the year than it is right now, Drew. I completely agree, but I think the team, our own team, is much worse than I expected. Yeah, I agree with that. So I'm just down, like, obviously they look bad, but hearing the coach's comments, they seem to not have any answers themselves. No. Hey, thank you all very much. It was good to see you.
Starting point is 00:52:46 By the way, thanks for everybody for being back. Our episode of Cover Zero is out. Also, there's an article about the growth of KSR and about us for our 20th anniversary.
