It is Kentucky Sports Radio Wednesday, October the 8th on an absolutely beautiful day here in Lexington, as bad as the day was yesterday. this one is just as good. And you can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line 859-280-2287. A-Vision Autoglass
Starting point is 00:03:05 Text Machine is 772-7-7-4-7-4 in this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. It is Wings Day here at KS. Bar. Dollar Wings, best deal you're going to get in town for the food you get, and we'll be open here at 11. We've got people here from Lexington.
Starting point is 00:03:23 We got people here from Franklin County, Shepherdsville, and then, couple of big guests. Drew Franklin's dad is here for the first time. Yeah, Franco. I'm nice to see Drew Frankl's dad. And then a huge shock. Hello, KSR. Bob that's 92 that has been called the Bob that is not from Jamestown, but the Bob, he is here for the first time and didn't look like I thought he would. Did you? He walked in and says hello and you're like, wait a minute. I know who you are. He literally said, hello, Ryan. And I Shannon, I go, I know that voice. I knew it immediately that that was, he didn't say hello to me or you, Drew, but he did say hello to Ryan.
Starting point is 00:04:03 It was impressive. He said two words, and you cut him off and were like, I know who you heard. I know that voice. You know, I'm impressive. I give people by voice. He's probably the person I was sitting here thinking that has called the show the most that I had never seen until today. Would you agree with that? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Well, have we ever seen the truth? We've seen a picture of him, but I don't think I never met the truth. So I think the truth actually would hold that. But Bob might have been second, Drew. Yeah, a great special guest here today. Sometimes I have an image of collars and I almost don't want to meet them, but then I'm actually glad to meet him. I always have an image of people, and then it throws it out the window.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Bob, you're 92, but you don't look a day over 86. He looks great for 92, actually. You look great for 92, and I like your little beanie, too. I would wear that little beanie. I was say drove himself there at the age of 90. He drove himself. That's amazing. Now you can't talk, all right?
Starting point is 00:04:58 Because we got headsets on. But I would, I drove himself here at 92. Honor and a pleasure, sir. You're still a better. You're still a better driver than Ryan. No doubt. Even right now. So yesterday, Lexington got the most rain in a day he had ever gotten in October,
Starting point is 00:05:15 and the fifth most rain in a day it had ever gotten in history. Did you know that? My basement flooded, so yes, I absolutely know that. Oh, your basement flooded? Yeah. I sense another friend. ad campaign coming. Serve pro going national. I've never had water in my basement ever. Well, I've only lived there for six years.
Starting point is 00:05:33 But my basement had a layer of water all on it from all the way. It was wild driving around yesterday. There were streets flooded all over Lexington. Louisville, I think, had a lot of flooding, but it looks like everything's okay. But just pounded rain all day until about 7 o'clock. Yeah, my crops needed it. I was glad for that. But I had a lot of things around town. I didn't have an umbrella. So I would just have to step out and just except that I'm soaked walking around places. Yeah, it was, but now it's beautiful today and a lot of good stuff going on. I just want to say, I'm in, I'm in a good move.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Like, I'm in a really good move. Yeah, why? I slept more last night continuously than I have in years. I went like nine hours without waking up. Usually I wake up at like five and a half, six hours, and then I, you know, have to go to the restroom or something. Then I'm awake and I kind of drift back in out. This was just solid.
Starting point is 00:06:25 went to bed at 11.30 and did not move until 8.30. So I'm like in, this is the most energy I've had in forever. I don't know why, but I did. But I bet you still woke up 10 minutes before your alarm was supposed to go out. I never hear my alarm. That's amazing. But this was like, just so you know, if you hear a lot of energy, that's why it's happening, Drew. I don't know why I slip so well, but I'm in.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Probably needed a little catch-up sleep. I know you've been back a few days, but still probably went on a little bit. The alarm would go off. We had to leave it multiple days. we had to get on the safari vehicle at 515. Because that's when animals are out. That's when they do there. So as the sun comes up, that's when animals,
Starting point is 00:07:04 I think that's when they're, I see these kids are here. I'm sorry, I think that's when they're hornyest is in the morning. So, like, that's when they get up and they, what are you laughing at? I think it's just science. What do you want from me? I just gave them a quick look to see if they were.
Starting point is 00:07:18 But that's why they're out. So that's what you were there to see? I thought you're just there watching graze, like, eat some grass. I mean, I didn't go for that. It wasn't like that's what I was seeking. It's just they're most likely to come out in public so that they can meet their spouses during that time. And then when it gets later in the day,
Starting point is 00:07:37 they tend to blend into the bush, and it's harder to see them. That's the thing. So if you had to say, did the ladies kind of hand lead you, or did you hand lead the ladies? I don't know what that means. Like, were they taking care of you,
Starting point is 00:07:50 making sure you were... Nobody needs to take care of me. You know I am mid-40s and have been by myself since I was 18. I am fine. We know you, though. Out in the bush, were they kind of hand-leading you around? It was a car. We got in and then we would get out.
Starting point is 00:08:05 We were not out there. Did they hold your hand when you were out? I wasn't fighting rhinos. I was driving around. The hardest thing was the sun because it was on my face the whole time. That was really the only problem. We did have, I was so impressed with the two people on the trip that were from, South Africa, how good they were at spotting stuff.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Like, if we didn't have them, I don't think I, I mean, maybe, you know, we've seen the elephants. But in general, a lot of the other stuff, they'd be like, you know, and you'd go, what? And then there it was. There's like actual tour guides or people on your. Yeah, there was that we had, I had a tour guide that did the whole trip. So he did all 11 days. And then we had someone specifically for the safari. And the woman for the safari, she could see stuff just, it was unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:08:53 She would just be like, Zebra, right over there, and then you would see it. Zebra gets me every time. That's not how we say it here. You're South African now. Come back, you're saying Zebra. I'm zebra, all right. I've been to the Johannesburg soccer game. I've been there.
Starting point is 00:09:09 I'm good. But yeah, it was really cool. It's not like what you think. You probably think of like this green, lush land. This was like brown, so it wasn't the most beautiful landscape, but it made it easier to see the animals because there weren't leaves and stuff everywhere, which actually made it easy. So they're just like one person driving and one person watching?
Starting point is 00:09:31 It was one person. So it was a car and it had like a high thing, you know, where people could sit up top. But I had to sit in the bottom because there weren't enough seats. So it was me and her sitting ground level and everybody else was up top. And she would drive around and she could just she could just see everything. So it was awesome. We did it for two days. But that 515, those 515 wake-up calls, there's a part of me.
Starting point is 00:09:52 It's like, I've seen plenty of animals. I skip the third one, to be honest. I can see you. You're not a morning person. Don't really care. Remember, we did cover zero, and it finished it like 1.45 in the morning, and I said, I'm not going on the third day. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:10:04 So, yesterday, Drew and I went to UK ProDet, and I'm going to go ahead and tell you now, like, what is it? Basket. No offense to all things UK football and Mark, I'm basketball. All right, I'm all in. I'm basketball. Watching that yesterday got me very, very excited. Like, very excited. We, I don't know how good we'll end up being.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Like, it depends on how they connect and all that, but we got a squad. We got dudes upon dudes upon dudes. We've got 12 guys that are really good. Otega didn't play, so he would be the 12th, but he wasn't playing yesterday. And even the 13th, Reese Potter, could, if you needed him to go in, he could play.
Starting point is 00:10:53 I mean, we got, we got guys, and they're fun to watch, and they're crazy athletic. And all I can do is compare it to last year, Drew. You and I sat there last year. I watched them. My take last year was, wow, they can shoot. They can really shoot. But I did think, I might be more athletic than a couple of these people. That was my take last year.
Starting point is 00:11:19 this year maybe you take a 10% drop in shooting not a huge drop maybe a 10% drop in shooting but we got some athletes and we got some dudes that are like Jalen Lowe I already had all the stock
Starting point is 00:11:36 I bought like I called my broker and bought even more I mean he's so fast he's so fast we didn't have that guy last year we haven't had a dude this fast off the bounce since, well, Dillingham was like that, right? But we haven't had many of them like that in the, you know, Fox, Dillingham, Wall. Lowe's probably not as fast as those guys, but he'd be right behind them.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Would you agree with that? Oh, yeah, yeah. He looked great last night. And just to be a pro day, they're out there diving on the floor. He was yelling at people getting up in their face if they were, if they made a mistake. It was like, I felt like they were getting ready to play the tournament. Such a contrast between the pro days of. of Cal and this in terms of.
Starting point is 00:12:19 I mean, they were practicing. And I feel bad for y'all at home. Because it was really, it reminded me of when Cal Perry was here, the first few years, he would invite me to practice every year. And I would say, man, I wish fans could see this. I wish you could see how much back then Cal and Roebuck were coaching. Because if you went to practice, you'd be like, oh, this is something. That's what I felt like yesterday.
Starting point is 00:12:44 I know it was on, but I believe it didn't they show just poor dick Goose just talking the whole time. Yeah, I'm good to hear you guys. Got to enjoy it because us sitting at home didn't get to enjoy it very much. The reviews online are not good. I don't know. Why do they do that? Why do they do that?
Starting point is 00:12:59 Why even bother showing it if you're not going to show it? Well, like you and I said before the show, you can talk, but show the scrimmage while you're talking. Show them practicing. Because I wish fans, I wish fans could see it. I wish you could see, like, first of all, I wish you could see how good a coach we have and how good of assistance we have. They lead it just as much as he does.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I mean, Mark Fox is out there doing great stuff. Alvin Brooks, the McLean guy, Jason Hart. I wish people could see and appreciate what they're doing. So here's what stuck out to me. Jalen Lowe stuck out the most. I think Trent Noah is either grown or gotten stronger. Would you agree with that? He looked like just a bigger dude.
Starting point is 00:13:39 That was my number one takeaway. Just appearance. Trent Noah looks completely different. I know Pope wanted to add 18 pounds. He looked like he lost 18 pounds. He looks. He's very lean. Very lean.
Starting point is 00:13:50 But like fit, not like he's skinny out there. Face gotten much skinnier, right? I mean, you know, you don't like to say somebody has baby fat, but he probably had a little bit of baby weight on him last year, and that's completely gone. I thought, so to me, Jail and Lowe sticks out the most. Otega wasn't on the floor, but if you were watching, you would say, okay, that's our best player.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Trent Noah looked really good. Michael Moreno. Malachi. Malachi. Excuse me. I talked to his brother Michael during the thing. Who just got married? Malachi Moreno.
Starting point is 00:14:16 That kid, the difference between him and when he was a junior in high school, which was the last time I'd seen him play, they're different kids. Moreno's going to play. I didn't know if he would. After watching yesterday, he's going to play. Didn't you think he looked great? I mean, we thought, you know, he's in McDonald's All-American. He's going to be good, but maybe not quite ready.
Starting point is 00:14:35 They're pre-stacked. Storm at the end of the bench. Maybe you'll need him. He was just going up and dunking on people's heads in a crowded paint last night. Yeah. He's bulked up a lot, too. I didn't watch a lot in high school, but he looks. College ready.
Starting point is 00:14:47 A lot of guys can shoot. I mean, Aberdeen makes, like, every shot he takes. Did Lowe shoot the ball well from outside? Pretty good, yeah. I mean, Lowe's thing is the way he takes people off the bounds. But, yes, Lowe's shot the ball well. That's good to hear. You know, Noah, it's one practice, so I'm not getting ahead of myself.
Starting point is 00:15:08 My only concern was our man Diabate shoots not great. I don't know if that's. He didn't take many last year. It's not something he'll be doing a lot of. I think everybody thought he was going to come in here. I don't see him shooting a lot of threes. I think he took, we looked at it. Was it like 25 all of last year?
Starting point is 00:15:26 Yeah. So not even won a game. He didn't look like he'd taken many. So it'll be interesting to see because in Pope's system, your four needs to shoot threes. So if he plays the four, I'll be interested to see what they do because he's not going to shoot much. I wouldn't think.
Starting point is 00:15:43 maybe they play him at the four, but he's actually playing five on offense, because I think Moreno and Garrison can shoot from outside. But Jasper Johnson, you know, look good. Who am I missing here? Well, my king, Colin Chandler. Colin Chandler. Dude. Drew's right.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Like, if he doesn't start, he may not start. He's a six-man. And he will dunk on people's face. He has so much bounce. Yeah, I mean, he will dunk on your face. What makes him valuable. He can play the one or the two. You can bring him off the bench of six men back up either one guy.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Either of those guys. It's just the thing that strikes me about this is how deep this team is. It's not 2015 deep because those were all pros, right? But they were young, but they were all pros. But you take that team out. This is the deepest team we've had. I don't know, since when? 2015 was deeper, but you get beyond that.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Now, I don't know who's deeper than this. When your 12th man is Yellovich. Yeah. And he's the twilight. How about him having to run to the top of the... Yeah, so he got in trouble and he had to run the steps. What he did? Pup was punishing people.
Starting point is 00:16:51 They were doing punishment. Yeah, so Pope told him something like, shoot the ball, and he kind of snapped back at him, and Pope goes run this. And so, like, in front of all of us, he had to run the steps. He had to go touch the very top. And Brandon Garrison got in trouble for something, and he did the worst punishment I've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Like, I would just say to you, yeah, so he had to take a towel. Yeah. And he was on one end of the floor. Did they show that on the screen? Uh-huh. He was on one end of the floor, and he had the towel on the ground, and he had to run with the towel on the ground,
Starting point is 00:17:21 like, bent over, like a triangle all the way up and all the way back. And I literally thought if they did that to me, I'd quit. My back was hurting just watching it. That, and before they got into scrimmages and drills, they did the diving on the floor drill. That's the old Billy Glass. I don't think Cal ever did that. They just roll a ball out there and tell you to go dive,
Starting point is 00:17:39 and I was just, like, cringing every time they did it. Billy apparently would do that for like 30 minutes. They only did it one time. And I think he did it on gravel. Shards of glass. But I came away very, very excited. My take on it is this team is deep, foul trouble, not worried about it unless it's the point guard. We're very deep.
Starting point is 00:18:02 My only question will be, who are our stars? I know Jaylon Lowe is going to be one. And I assume Otega is going to be the second. You know, Jay Billis always says you got to have three. We'll see who the third develops. But we got a lot of choices, in my opinion, as to who that can be. Because the third guy end up being Jaden Quaitens once he gets healthy? Yes, maybe.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Now, he didn't do the back and forth. So he did some workouts, but he didn't do the five-on-five. So we didn't really get to see him in that context. But he could shoot, too. He was draining shots. And well, to the point of the depth, my other big takeaway, we haven't named him yet. Brayden Hawthorne is the best 15th man in the country. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:18:41 It's not even close. He's good. Now he's got to put on weight, but he's good. Braden Hawthor, who was it that said he was Tayshan? Just anyone. Just look at him. He's Tayshan. If he's left hand, he's right-handed.
Starting point is 00:18:50 He looks like Tayshan. Brayton-Hothor, I don't know how much he'll play this year, but he's playing at the school. Yeah. Yes, for sure. That was a great pickup for whatever he was ranked. I don't know. Right around 25, 30. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:01 You can almost look at him because he won't play this year. He's just too thin. It's almost like you've got a five-star locked in for next year. No, here's what he is. He reminds me if when Cal would bring in classes, and then the last guy in the class would be like our eighth or nine man. That's him. It's just he's our 13th man this year. But he was hitting everything.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Yeah, 859, 280, 2287. We'll take a break. We'll talk more about it. We're a little giddy because we're going to be good. This is KSI. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened.
Starting point is 00:19:36 That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports slice brings you closer to the action, with stories told by the people who live them.
Starting point is 00:20:09 Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
Starting point is 00:20:38 We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
Starting point is 00:21:29 And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never. ever seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:21:44 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:22:01 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. that man, hell get the flying, he running up the court, licking his fingers while he got the ball, like,
Starting point is 00:22:10 after you go through a training camp with that Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone,
Starting point is 00:22:28 it's Ryder Strong and Will Ferrell from PodMeets World. And now the PodMeets Twirled podcast. We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered dancing with a stars, traitors, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of the show.
Starting point is 00:22:52 I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough. Did people not like it? Like what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion in the 50th season from the final attempts at gameplay to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of.
Starting point is 00:23:09 Ah, ha, ooh. Again, we are experts. So make sure to tune into Pod Meets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to Pod Meets Twirled on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Text machine is 772-745254 here at Wingsday. One person writes, Matt, how are they condition-wise? It looked condition-wise. It looked good to me. I mean, didn't. I didn't. I didn't. I didn't anybody like tugging on their shorts.
Starting point is 00:23:43 They move constantly. Like they don't ever stop. Like it's constant movement. That was something, Cal's practices were like that too. Like those guys, they just like to keep them going. Don't really give them a chance to rest. And the way they do it is they got like 20 guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:01 They got like seven guys that are managers or I guess they would call them, what do they call it, analyst? Analyst. And they're playing to some. And so it just makes it to where no one stops. Like it's just one goes to the end of the court, and then they start the second one. And then they start them back.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And like there's no waiting. There's no standing around. That was my big takeaway. Last season the first time we saw a practice, it's just there are so many people involved. Yeah. They got a dude, the same dude they had last year. They got a dude that is 38 with a mortgage out there playing basketball.
Starting point is 00:24:34 I'm telling you, there's a guy out there. Now we looked up as college stats. He could ball. I'm trying to tell you. What's his name? Patrick. Yeah, he was the Patriot League player of the year. He had like a 10-year career overseas.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Now, listen, I'm not mocking this dude. He's a bucket. This dude would eat up the YMCA. He's got, last year he wore two knee braces. This year, now he's wearing those pants, like the white tight pants, the sleeves. And he's a bucket. Yeah. But he moves.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Like, I think he needs to go to hot yoga. because, I mean, he moves less fluidly than me, but he still will give him the up and under and the dipsy-doo. You know, I mean, he's still doing his, he's still doing his thing. I don't know where they got this guy, because he's in his mid-30s, I think. He's 35. He's 35 years old, and he's, like, posting up Brandon Garrison and go, whoop, what? And, like, it's, it's fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Can I tell the rumor of what he really did to Brandon Garrison? What? Oh, yeah, there's a rumor. There's a rumor going around. This isn't good news, though. Be careful. This says more about how good our grad assistant is than anything else. There's a rumor going around that he dunked on Brandon Garrison.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Not just a rumor. Not that I've seen it and it happened last night. No, it happened. But I was talking about this guy how good he is. And they're like, he is good. When he got a dipsy do on Brandon Garrison, his teammates all did the thing where you dunk on people. So, like, clearly it's a running joke that he has, I'm all had to believe that. I don't know if that dude can get up and get a dunk.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I don't know if he could jump. But he's fun to watch. I mean, I will say, when you got a 35-year-old out there running with him, it's kind of funny. And people would probably recognize him if we could share his radio, but he's on the bench with a clipboard and a suit. Like, he's around. You would probably recognize his face, but very unsuspecting at age 35. But a good basketball player they have out there helping out. Makes me want to see some video.
Starting point is 00:26:30 I mean, for sure. Well, you could have watched the yesterday if they would have shown it. You know, we didn't get to see it. How much of it did they show? Any of it? Very, very little. I got so frustrated. I was mopping up water in my basement anyway when I had it on.
Starting point is 00:26:41 The only thing I really noticed was that they seemed just more muscular, like thicker, bigger. There's so much more athletic. Yeah. And I don't think you realize, I mean, you know how much more athletic O.A. and Butler were than the other guys last year, and it just really stuck out. Well, now you've got a team. Now everybody looks at a lot.
Starting point is 00:27:00 Now everybody looks like that. Including like Trent Noah. I mean, you would, like Trent Noah looks different than he did last year as well. And I just couldn't get over how competitive they were But Pope said at Media Day Sometimes we have to stop them from fighting each other Because every practice they're going to war I kind of saw a little bit of that
Starting point is 00:27:16 They're there to entertain scouts And just get some drills and measurements out there And like I said they're treated Like they're about to go play the tournament I also liked I was watching Because this is the worry people have about Jalen Lowe Like Will he be selfish
Starting point is 00:27:30 Right will he share the ball I like again just practice feels like he gave up shots to share the ball throughout the whole thing. Did you agree with that? Yeah, and that's the thing. I think he's going to do a lot of. Pat Kelsey has a comment when they played him last year.
Starting point is 00:27:46 He was like, Lowe would get anywhere anywhere he wanted. And right, you thought he was about to lay it in. He's now kicked it out to someone for an open three. It was like he just finds a spots and then can distribute out to the open man better than anyone he had really seen. He is going to, like, he can get a step.
Starting point is 00:28:01 The player reminds me the most of it, I'm sure because of the whole left-handed thing. But is Deerrin Fox? Not as fast as Deeran Fox. I mean, Deer & Fox is like another level of fast. So I'm not saying he's that fast. But when you're sitting there watching him, if you were to say, like, what is the comparison?
Starting point is 00:28:18 I would say Deeran Fox. Do you agree with that? Yeah, he would appreciate that too because he knows Darren. Deer & Fox recruited him to Kentucky. They're both Texas guys. But that's my. Might be a little bit in how they play. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:30 I mean, I... Being from the same grassroots basketball. I'm not trying to put. with the Deeran Fox because Deeran Fox was like insanely quick. Not saying he's that, but he's you know a half step behind that quick and he'll get to the ring.
Starting point is 00:28:45 You know, we didn't have dudes who could get to the rim last year. At the end of the day, you know, O.A. would muscle his way to the rim and Butler would. But now we got a dude who can take you to the rim. And it's good what you said earlier. He was knocking down shots. I think that was the big knock on him. He wasn't that good of a shooter. 859-2-80-22.
Starting point is 00:29:00 We will take your calls. There's a lot of news to go around. It's Wings Day. We'll be right back. KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tegu Sports Radio. 772-745-254. One person writes, Matt, I haven't heard this kind of giddiness from you about UK basketball in a long time. It makes me excited.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Well, I mean, part of it was in the preseason Cal wasn't letting me come to anything since COVID. So I didn't, and then I went last year, and I was excited, but I could tell the limitations of that team. I think that team, by the way, last year, when we look back, really will have overperformed and we should be really proud of the way they played all year. I mean, I genuinely believe that, especially when you start to see the teams that Pope will probably have going forward.
Starting point is 00:29:52 Do you agree with that? Yeah, definitely. I mean, we loved a lot of those guys, but like an Andrew Carr with back problems, there is not half as athletic is what we saw last night. Not even close. And then the second thing is, you know, we've had a lot of elite talent here, and you can see it. Like, you can see when guys – and I love – this is something we didn't have under Cal. I love watching guys improve.
Starting point is 00:30:17 I love seeing how much better Trent Noah is, and I love seeing how much better Colin Chandler is. Like that makes me – that just makes me excited. We've not gotten to do that in 15 years to watch guys, Ryan, like, really improved. Did you – anybody say anything about what Otega's return is? Like, would he be able to play the – He's back this week. He's back this week. Because I interviewed him Monday, and I was like, you back practicing.
Starting point is 00:30:38 He was like, I'm back to full speed. But maybe he just didn't want to do that. In front of the pros? Your second practice back, and you've already done the NBA thing in May. That was me speculating. But he did say he's back this week. Yeah, I was told he will play in the blue-white game, which is a week from Saturday. We'll see what he does with Big Blue Madness.
Starting point is 00:30:56 One person writes, Matt, you didn't mention Cam Williams. You guys never talk about him. just because amongst the guys he didn't stand out as much as the others but he made every shot I saw him take not necessarily I wouldn't say to me Drew he looked like a seventh eighth ninth man but he made every shot he took I saw he blocked a three-pointer that was one of those whoa like not many people would go up and get a three-pointer like he did and then hitting some threes you could see flashes but as you said I mean when I'm writing down the people that jumped off the page he's a little farther down but you could see potential there were moments
Starting point is 00:31:31 One person writes, Ryan's assessment of you needing someone to take care of yourself is correct. Most men in their mid-40s don't ruin their iPhone, putting it in the same pocket as a Coke can. All right, first of all, that's rude. Secondly, or go without an iPhone during a once-in-a-lifetime trip in a foreign country that could be dangerous, just to save money that would cost what your shoes cost. All right, I don't need this from you. Now, the reason I didn't buy a new iPhone, I thought I said this. In South Africa, everything costs about a third of what it cost here.
Starting point is 00:32:05 So, like, if you were to go to get McDonald's in South Africa, what is McDonald's here? $9, $10 for a meal there would be like three. So, like, so that's cool. I mean, food, you know, a Diet Coke, like a bottle of Coke Zero was like 84 cents or something. But now the opposite to that is luxury goods are insanely expensive. So an iPhone, I think I got this iPhone. I got the seven for like $1,600. And in South Africa, it's like $4,300.
Starting point is 00:32:39 Because the disparity of wealth is so much that the rich people are so rich, they can just charge them anything. And thus they do. So like the, like, I don't buy a Rolex watches, but there was a Rolex store and somebody in our group went, and they were like, the Rolex is here are two and a half times as much as they are in New York City in South Africa. The other thing is, if you get a phone and
Starting point is 00:33:01 South Africa. They can't give you an American phone number. So I would have just had a South African phone number for the rest of my life. And I was like, what's that going to do for me? So that's why Drew, I didn't. That would be funny. Well, the counterpoint to the original text about not take care of yourself, you're here right now. You seem fine.
Starting point is 00:33:18 You made it. So you did take care of yourself. Yeah, there was only one time, at one night that I was a little nervous. I was at the mall trying to get my phone fixed. They finished. It was like a three and a half hour walk. And they tell you, do not take taxis on the street. They're like, don't.
Starting point is 00:33:34 That's dangerous. Either getting an Uber or call a taxi company and have them come get you. Well, I didn't have any way to call anybody. And I wasn't going to go up to people and go, can I call a taxi with your phone? Like that would, you know, that makes me. So I was like, look, I'll walk. It's three and a half miles. It's on the beach, right?
Starting point is 00:33:53 I'll be fine. This is it night? Well, it was day, but it was turning into night. And by the time I got the last mile, it was dark. And it's just, you know, during the day, everyone's out. But it's like at night, it's like they turn the lights off in the entire city and everybody goes home or everybody gets inside. So all of a sudden these streets that were bustling with people, there's nobody there. Except the safety regions?
Starting point is 00:34:21 Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, you don't walk at night. And you're walking at night. I walk for the last half mile. So that was like a little, that was like a little like, all right, let's speed up a little bit. I wasn't in the worst neighborhood. It was fine.
Starting point is 00:34:35 But like, but they just don't walk at night in Johannesburg or Cape Town. We just do not. Out in the rural areas, I think they do it more, but just in Johannesburg and Cape Town, you do not walk at night. Drew did tell a story on you. You guys did cover zero and you were in a tent and everybody else is trying to sleep. You're trying to whisper because you didn't want to wake everybody else. Yeah, I was in a tent. And everybody else was in a tent and they were asleep.
Starting point is 00:34:55 and I was trying not to... I'm sure they loved that. I was trying not to wake them up, but I'm sitting there going, you know, Joe Flacco, and I go, because it was too they loved you. It was 1.15 in the morning out in the woods, so who's up next?
Starting point is 00:35:08 Let's go to Andrew. Andrew, how are you, Andrew? Wonderful. Hey, Matt, I don't know if you heard yesterday, but the tickets went on sale this morning at 10 o'clock for the UK of L game. I've been on hold for a few minutes, and there were still, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:35:25 quite a few left. So there's tickets for UK U of L at the Yom Center are on sale right now? Correct. And they're not sold out? With a buddy of mine. You got six of them? Yeah, we, uh, 10 o'clock they went on sale. I've been on hold a while.
Starting point is 00:35:44 Oh, wait a minute, hang on. Are you talking football or basketball? I'm talking basketball. I have faiths. That's amazing to me. They were the tickets released from U.S. They're all up top. but $98 a piece.
Starting point is 00:35:57 That's amazing to me. Someone tweeted me that too, that they bought a bunch. The UK UFL basketball tickets on a year that their top 15, they did not sell out. I'm going to buy some right now. Wow. Well, thank you for letting me know. I appreciate the call. So I actually had written down, Ryan, that I'm kind of amazed about Louisville attendance at things.
Starting point is 00:36:20 So Louisville played Virginia in football Saturday. was at 4 o'clock, beautiful weather, Louisville is undefeated, and Virginia is ranked. Yeah. And if you look at their schedule, you could have made a strong argument that if Louisville wins that game, they have a path to the playoff. I mean, not certain to make it, but they have a path if you look at it. And yet, there were 25,000 empty seats, or maybe 20,000 empty seats. I couldn't believe it, which is kind of crazy because there was so much excitement about this season, I think, of Louisville football fans. What do you make of the fact that they cannot sell out the UK U of L basketball game on a year?
Starting point is 00:37:06 They probably have the best chance to win that they've had in forever. I said this a year ago. They're broken and it's not fixable. Like when Pat Kelsey. But they have two young, exciting coaches. And look at their seat. I pulled up Ticketmaster. There are plenty of upper-levels.
Starting point is 00:37:21 seats available for the Kentucky What is it? It's a Tuesday night, right? Tuesday night at 80 o'clock. What, though? Yeah. Let me ask you. If UK U of L was here this year on a Tuesday night, you think there'd be tickets? No. It's one of the first marquee games of the season. Who cares if it's a weeknight? But there's plenty online right now. Is the St. Andrews Fair that weekend? Well, no, now last Saturday was the St. James Art Fair. And I do wonder if they didn't sell out because of the St. James Arn Fair, because it was going on last
Starting point is 00:37:49 week. That happened last year. I remember the jokes. It's like, well, we couldn't possibly fill the stadium. You know the St. James Art Fair was going on. It's like, oh, our bad. Well, it was going on this week, too, so that might be. Here's what I think happened. I think two things happened that really screwed up U of L. football. Basketball, I don't understand how their basketball's not sold out.
Starting point is 00:38:05 That arena is the same size it was before. The fact that they're not selling out is really something that's got to scare. Football, what happened is Tom Jurich expanded that stadium to make it bigger than Kroger Field, and they don't have the fan base. I mean, we have retracted our state. stadium, I think correctly. They expanded it, and their fan base cannot support the expansion of what, so they have 60,000 seats there now.
Starting point is 00:38:32 They can't handle that. And you're right, though, they have a path to 10 wins. I only have to play at Miami, and they got Clemson at home, but they might get to 10 wins this year. You'd think they'd be excited about that. I think they really screwed up with the expansion. And then the other thing is, and I've been saying this for 15 years, Kentucky athletics is a passion.
Starting point is 00:38:50 All right, everybody in here. that's here, you have that passion. Bob's 92 years old drove from Louisville. We got here from Etown, Franklin County. You know, got people here who come just to watch the show in Lexington. Louisville fandom is a party. And there's a big difference between passion and party. When the party's not fun, you don't go.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Right? When the passion's there, you're with it. But when the party's not there, you don't go. And it's not, they haven't won at quite the level they did. Tom Jurts created an atmosphere where going to U of L stuff was cool, but it still wasn't kind of in their blood, Drew, like it is for us. And I think you're seeing that now because they're good now and they're still not getting the same support.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Yeah, and I don't think it's coming back. I think another part of it is just scandal exhaustion. Maybe. If you're a fan of that basketball team, I know a lot of them kept talking themselves into seasons, but at some point you had to be like, I can't just keep doing this. I mean, that was a brutal patch from the end of particular. You got Chris Mack turning on his buddy with the FBI. I mean, their stuff is truly unbelievable,
Starting point is 00:39:55 and I could understand if some of their basketball fans were like, I can't keep following this. But you do wonder at some point, they've got one of their own coaching football, grew up in that city, right? The Brahms are like royalty in that city. He's coaching football. Last year they won, what, nine or ten games?
Starting point is 00:40:11 Smoked Kentucky. You got basketball. They make the tournament. They got a guy who, whatever you think about how good he'll be, he's exciting. He's brought it. They got a freshman, Brown, who's going to be one of the best players in the country this year as a freshman,
Starting point is 00:40:24 and they just, they can't sell out the UK U of L game? Broken. I tell when word gets out, there's tickets available. There's going to be a lot of blue coming. Well, I mean, starting right now. Starting right now. We should have all those tickets. They might be bought right now.

Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,

Starting point is 00:43:02 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows.
Starting point is 00:43:19 Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:43:42 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, I said, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court,
Starting point is 00:43:59 and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone, it's Ryder Strong, and Will Fidel from PodMeets World. And now the Pod Meets Twirled podcast. We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors,
Starting point is 00:44:22 and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of the show. I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough.
Starting point is 00:44:40 Did people not like it? Like what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion in the 50th season from the final attempts at gameplay to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of ha who, ha, who, ha, who. Again, we are experts. So make sure to tune to to the Pod Meets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes.
Starting point is 00:45:00 Listen to PodMeets Twirled on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-2802287. Text machine is 772-752524. We are here at KS Bar-Barr-Grail. are open, come see us. One person writes, where would Travis Perry be on this team? Would he get to play? I lean towards no, or if he did, he'd be like the 12th man. I mean, let's just look at the roster.
Starting point is 00:45:35 He's not playing over Jalen Lowe, right, Drew? Correct. Not playing over TAYGOA. Correct. Not playing over Denzel Aberdeen. Correct. Probably not playing over Jasper Johnson. Or Colin Chandler or any other goals. guard on the roster. So, I mean, he would be sixth man on just in terms of guards. So what I mean, is it, is it possible that he would play a little? Yeah. But he would not get significant minutes. I think, Ryan, in this group. He's going to be one of those guys. I think we look back, wish he had to do-over because he just wasn't ready to play point guard in the SEC last year, but at a necessity he had to because of the injuries. I wish he could have had a chance to
Starting point is 00:46:13 maybe develop a little better, but it just, it was a good departure on both sides. Here's what will happen, though. When we play them, he'll score 15th. Yeah, he won't miss. Chris Beard will see to it. Like, when we play them, it is 100% certain to me, Drew, that he will have a big game. That's just going to happen. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:46:32 As long as they don't win the game, you know, Travis was put in a bad spot last year. When he committed to Cal before Pope even got here and we all just assumed he'd be at the end of the bench, if you told us he'd be guarding Mark Sears at Alabama in his freshman season, we would say what in the hell happened to get to that point? but that's what Kentucky was in last year. I think he'll be a good player long term, but I don't think he would have had a huge role this season with what they have. Can we talk about the latest on your boy, Bill Belichick?
Starting point is 00:46:58 Oh, yeah. So right for the show they announced, canceling the Hulu series, the Hulu documentary about behind the scenes with Bill and Jordan canceled. I was looking forward to it. I know. I think it would, this is why you want to watch it. Yes, absolutely. And now it looks like they're not going to have it.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Things just keep falling apart. They call the GM a jerk, and now they cancel the Hulu series. Paul Febomb, who apparently is back on the air, said yesterday, Bill Belichick is going to go down in history as the worst college football coach of all time. The best pro football coach of all time and the worst college football coach of all time. You know worse than that guy from UCLA? They can't be worse than the guy from UCLA who won one game. in two years. Is it possible
Starting point is 00:47:48 he's the worst college football coach of all time? He's got to be in the conversation to be as successful as he was at the pro ranks. How can you fail that miserably in the collegiate ranks? Only played four games so it's not... They got just destroyed by Clemson last weekend, destroyed. I don't think I've called him the worst of all time
Starting point is 00:48:07 but we are learning that there's just completely different skill set in the way you coach college and the NFL because it's very obvious he's going to need a little time to get acquainted. I don't know how much time he has left in his coaching career. What do you do if you're in North Carolina? He obviously isn't ready.
Starting point is 00:48:20 Can you think about how good that show would have been? Oh, it'd been great. It'd have been awesome. Doubled its ratings based on how things have gone. I mean, it would have been awesome to watch because, like, apparently there are fights in the locker room. Like, if the cameras were all there, that would have been the greatest. And I want to know, what kind of reality show do you just get to cancel?
Starting point is 00:48:37 You got to, you agree to that. I mean, when we brought the cameras into OVW, they didn't say, well, if you don't like what's going on. I mean, the more drama. But they showed my seizure on TV. Right? Like, you know, I mean, there comes a point, Shannon. You shouldn't be able to cancel it.
Starting point is 00:48:52 Yeah, I mean, I would think you would want drama. You would want controversy. That's what makes the show good. That's why people want to watch it. The guy's two and three so far. He's not the worst coach of all time in college. Nobody wants to watch a boring show, right? We want to watch the drama.
Starting point is 00:49:06 You want to watch the good show. So I think I don't understand why they canceled it. If they were four and one right now in that documentary came out, no part of me would care to watch it. But if they released it right now with a bad, record and the Patriots drama and the Jordan drama, I'm running to watch it. One person writes, Matt, do you think we have a big man who can be like Amari Williams last year, handle the ball and pass?
Starting point is 00:49:28 I don't think they'll be as good as him at that. I mean, I think he had a unique, I mean, think about it. He can't shoot. He's not much of an offensive player, and he's going to make an NBA team because of how good a passer he is. So I think that's a rare skill. You know, Brandon Garrison is going to have to be better at it. What did you think of him yesterday?
Starting point is 00:49:51 He looked pretty good. I'm worried Brandon Garrison is going to try to be Amari Williams this year. And Amari was kind of a unicorn. There's not many Amari Williams that can pass and bring it up like that at his size. So I hope Brandon Garrison can do it a little bit, but I hope we don't get to. Remember he'd force turnovers? We called it a BG time where he called his own number. Well, we saw some of that yesterday.
Starting point is 00:50:11 I hope he doesn't try to be Amari because Amari was his own thing. We saw the Brady Garrison still does the, all right, clear out. Here it comes. Although he does have a weird way of, like, getting an open layup, even though arms and limbs are going in seven different directions. And he'll have a green light to take some threes this year. I think because he's so big. There's something about his drives to the basket that look nothing like anyone I've ever seen,
Starting point is 00:50:37 because he'll shoot and he'll kick one. leg up in the air and then his arms over here and he's shooting and he just looks like a praying mantis with just limbs going in every direction. He definitely looks at coordinated. And then he goes in. And then he looks at the other bench and wants to fight all of them. It's like he's got a lot going on there. They'll need that intensity though.
Starting point is 00:50:58 Maybe a couple times last year had to reel him in a little bit. Didn't Amari like physically carry him off the court of Elklo? But what Pope lacks in that fire, I think Garrison kind of helps bring it out of them. He definitely definitely has that. So is the backup in the post right now, Marino? Diabate at five, some, and Moreno. I mean, I think Yelovich is third of the three. Do you agree?
Starting point is 00:51:20 Yeah. He looks a step slow to me. I mean, he made every shot. I just think the same thing we saw was Z. I just think he's going to have a hard time playing defense. I mean, he's a step slow to me to everybody on the court. I still want to see what he has in him because at Media Day, because some reports that came out of his first practices,
Starting point is 00:51:37 they didn't look good. In Media Day, he was like, man, I sucked when I got. here. It's taking a little while. He's like, I'm figured out now, but first few practices, I didn't know what I was doing. And him being open about that, almost laughing at it, gives me a little hope that he's confident that he's going to get it down. Yeah, I mean, skill-wise, you can see how skilled he is. It's just going to be a matter of can he guard anybody. Can he guard anybody? And that was the same thing we have as Z. I mean, Z was very skilled. He just, he couldn't guard people. We'll have to see if he's going to be able to guard people. I don't know the answer. Heelovich does the one thing at the four Pope once and in the corner and hit shots. Yeah, I think he plays the five if we play.
Starting point is 00:52:12 I think he does. Yeah, I mean, if we play. But, no, I mean, he'll play some. There's enough pieces there. They can figure out the- They'll figure something out. But I just, you'll see, like, he has a hard time staying in front of people throughout the thing. We will take a break.
