It is hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-2-2-2287. text machine is 772, 775254. KSbar now open.
Starting point is 00:03:35 It is Wings Day, Dollar Wings, all day and evening. We're here again tomorrow, and then Friday we're at Don Franklin. Big weekend, UK Purdue Friday night. Remember that game's at 6 o'clock. It's earlier than people realize. I don't think they realize it's 6 o'clock. So you have to, our pregame show will be at 3 o'clock that day. And then UK Tennessee on Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:03:58 We get Tom Hart the next two weeks. Tom Hart is doing UK Purdue. Okay. Then he's doing UK Tennessee, and then he's doing UK Auburn next week. So we have three straight Tom Hart game. Might well just stay here for the whole week. Just check up for this.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Auburn game is there. If he stays here, he'll miss it. But otherwise, for the other ones, yes, he can. Looking forward to the Tom games. We focus on Tom, but I just like having Tom, Jordan, and Cole. I really think they're the best group out there. I agree. They're a good group.
Starting point is 00:04:26 All right, a couple things. 859,000, 280, 27, You know I like 11 o'clock having some different news. All right, I read this. You know ICE. They've been in the news. They come and they, well, I'm not going to get into it. I don't need to be getting everybody worked up.
Starting point is 00:04:43 But they come and they do ice things. Okay. Now they're hiring like more ICE people because they want to have more ICE people. So they have hiring standards to go to ICE. Here are the hiring standards. You have to be able to do 14 or 15 pushups, 32 sit-ups, which seems like an oddly, very specific number, 32 sit-ups, and you have to be able to run a mile and a half in 14 minutes.
Starting point is 00:05:12 So, you know, they've been flooding the Ice Academy with ICE people, but now they're saying, hey, folks, y'all need to slow down sent-in-us people because 38% of the people they've sent cannot do those things. So they've gone to the academy. As soon as they've gotten there, they've had to go back home because they can't do those things. So here's my question for the group. Could you do that?
Starting point is 00:05:34 Today, 15 push-ups, 32 sit-ups, a mile and a half in 14 minutes. Ryan? I could do the push-ups. I could do the setups, but there's not a chance I could do the mile in 15 minutes. A mile and a half in 14 minutes. I couldn't do it. You don't think you could?
Starting point is 00:05:51 I don't think I could do it. All right. What about you? A mile and a half is absolute no. I don't even want to think about running that far. I'm going to drive that far. Sit-ups, I think I could pull off. Push-ups, probably not.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Okay. Shannon? Oh, yeah. I could do this. Easy. You could do it. All day and twice on Sunday. That's no problem at all.
Starting point is 00:06:11 So I could do the sit-ups. I think I could do the mile and a half maybe. I don't think I could do the push-ups. So that's, I'm almost certain I couldn't do the push-ups. I think I'm certain I could do the sit-ups. I don't think I could do the push-ups. And then I think I'd be close on that mile and a half. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:33 It'd be because I don't run a lot, but I walk a lot. I think I could do it, but I think it'd be really close. You could do it? I think I could do it. I do the push-ups on the sit-ups that you just mentioned every day. So I know you could do those. I can't do. I don't think I can do the push-ups.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Yeah, you could do 15 push-ups. Yeah, I mean, maybe if I practice. I think if I tried to do it right now, I don't know if I could do it. I could do the sit-ups. I've got a bum arm, but even with a good arm, I don't know this may surprise you. I'm not huge on upper body strength. I don't have, you know, I don't let, ma'am, I don't lift weights as much as you probably think I do. I'm not pumping a lot of iron.
Starting point is 00:07:07 So I don't know if that's, I don't know if I'm going to be able to do it. I decided about a year or two ago, barring a fire or someone chasing me, I'm just not running. Like, I don't have any run. Well, you have also, you have shin splints, right? I did. Those have gotten better. But leave those aside, I don't want an excuse. I'm just not running.
Starting point is 00:07:23 I've decided unless it's an emergency, I'm not running. So we think Shannon's in ice. Shannon can do it. I would probably just not choose to be in it, but maybe if I did a little practice, but you two say no. I would have to get into a little shape to do the mile and a half and 14 minutes. I feel like you could do it, though, if you practice. If I practice and got a shape. Because, I mean, I've seen you run.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Like you're not. But like right now to walk out of here and try to do it there is not a chance. I can do that. Okay. Well, maybe Shannon will be the only one. And honestly, Shannon's the one who most likely would join us out of the four of us. You don't know what I'm doing in my spare time. You may be.
Starting point is 00:08:01 I mean, they're wearing masks, so how do I know it's not you right now? What kind of vacation time do they get? They shouldn't be able to wear masks. All right, when did we get to a world where we have our policemen in masks? Like, that's put everything else aside. We should not have policemen in masks. That's the stuff they do in like, you know, third world countries. All right, I'm done.
Starting point is 00:08:20 890-2287. Louisville signed a player from the G-League. What do you think of that? We've been out of control. Now we're too out of control when you're getting G-League commitments in college basketball. I can't believe that's allowed. I really can't. I'm good with it.
Starting point is 00:08:42 How are you? Yeah, I'm good with it. First of all, it's a rule that's allowed. I didn't know it was a rule. I actually had no idea it was a rule. So put aside, but I'm a – And I think Louisville, if it's a rule, should certainly do it. Would you agree?
Starting point is 00:08:57 Agreed. If it's a rule and it's allowed, then Louisville should do it. The point is not, if you don't like a rule, it's like I say with taxes. There are many things on the tax code that I do not think people should be able to exploit. But if I can, I should do it, right? Even if I don't agree with it, I should do it. Why would you? Why wouldn't you?
Starting point is 00:09:21 Same thing here. I'm good with it because of this. It was a G-League Ignite player, which is one of those people that didn't play college basketball. The G-League Ignite is for people who, like, didn't get drafted. I'm fine with it. I'll even go further. I think we should have a system where when these guys get drafted,
Starting point is 00:09:40 if they're not ready to play in the NBA, let them play in college. Why not? That's how it used to be. People forget about that. Like Larry Bird was drafted by the Celtics and then went back to Indiana State for a year. Kyle Macy did it here. Oh, did he? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:59 I didn't know that. He got drafted a year early, came back, played one more year, and then he went to the sun, I believe. Is that right? Yeah. See, I didn't even know that. So I'm fine with it. I don't think you should be able to take an NBA salary in the NBA and come back. But I don't – college basketball has a chance to be the number one development.
Starting point is 00:10:19 mental system in the world for basketball. Why not just do it? Like, why not just do it? What's the harm? What's the harm? Is there a harm? I'm not opposed to drafting them and storing them here. I guess really, I just don't understand what the G League Ignite is right now.
Starting point is 00:10:37 I think it's going away. Yeah, it's more of just the G League Ignite thing. I don't understand. It feels like a college with NBA affiliation. I had an agent tell me a couple days ago, they think the G League in general may go. way and that the NBA may just say, why am I paying for this G League? Let's just send all these people to college. Let's let college do this for free. Why are we paying to do it when college
Starting point is 00:10:59 basketball can do it for us? And I think there's something to that, right? I mean, we've got Yellovich who played professionally, you know? Well, that's the other argument. If these guys can play professionally in Europe and then play college basketball, then why can't they play professionally in America and play college basketball? We're literally making it easier. I'm not not trying to sound MAGA here, but we're literally making it easier for foreigners to play basketball than we are Americans. Why would you do that? It doesn't make sense. It's so inconsistent that you can go over and make a big check playing pro basketball, but just because it wasn't the NBA you're able to play. Yeah, so I'm actually fine with it. I mean, at Louisville people took my tweet about it as
Starting point is 00:11:39 criticism. It was not criticism. I literally didn't know it was a rule. You're going to see more people do this. Why wouldn't you? Take a 20-year-old that's played two years of G league, that's going to be better than a high school kid, isn't it? Yeah. And with the transfer portal, you're getting these older kids building your rush with older kids anyway, so I can see why it can be a success. Finally, Travis Perry and Jordan Birx, two former cats. Travis Perry plays in his first exhibition game.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Old Miss plays at Houston preseason number two. Old Miss wins. Travis Perry for three-pointers. Are you concerned at all that Travis Perry? is going to be Johnny Jusanging it up for Old Miss this year? I'm not concerned. I am happy for Travis that he had a big game. I hope it goes well at Ole Miss.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But as a Kentucky fan, I'm not, you know, I bet a night having nightmares about what Travis Perry could do. But I'm generally happy they had a big game and hope it goes well for him. I'm going to be one of those guys. I hope he does that every game he plays in except against us. I hope he does great success down there. I think we all are big Travis Perry fans. All right.
Starting point is 00:12:46 What about Central Florida? you probably didn't follow. They played Duke last night. Jordan Berks. You guys remember that guy? He played it Kentucky. Jordan Berks had 25 points 18 in the first half. Central Florida led Duke at halftime,
Starting point is 00:13:03 and Jordan Berks had 18. What about Jordan Berks? That one's pretty surprising. Not much of a factor here at UK. I remember interviewing him when he first got here, and he was big on being a one and done and the whole cow thing. He was one and done here. That's true. I think he went on to Georgetown maybe.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Now another stop. But yeah, no, that one surprises me. Didn't see much of that potential while he was here. I've not been on my radar, but I know he was Shannon the dude's favorite player there, I think, that season. Was he Shannon? I think you're confusing with Bryce Hopkins. Bryce Hopkins was my guy. Yeah, too, was.
Starting point is 00:13:37 No. No, he was not my favorite. Did you have any affinity for Jordan Berks at all? I mean, yeah, he's on the team. I like that he was a Kentucky Wildcat, but other than that, nothing special about them that I saw. Yeah. In a big Vandy game.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Shout out Jordan Berks for a big game at Vandy. Did he have a big game against Vandy? I don't have my memory. Memory of Jordan Burke. I feel like the only thing I remember Jordan Burke's doing is shooting fade away 15-footers. Did he win like the dunk contest or is that somebody else I'm thinking about? I don't remember. I don't remember.
Starting point is 00:14:08 I would say there are very few scholarship players in the history of Kentucky basketball that I have less memories about. Can you think of any other scholarship player that you're like, because almost everybody, like even like Nate Knight, I can remember there was a game where he got fouled and got an and won. I don't remember anything Jordan Burke did. I can't remember one Jordan Burke's play. Anybody?
Starting point is 00:14:36 No, we're all just staring blank into the space. I know that maybe there might have been some frustrations. He bought backpacks for the team? He bought backpacks for the team. There we go. Well, that's good. And he was the surprise winner in the dunk contest. I see it right here?
Starting point is 00:14:53 He did win the dunk contest. Okay. There we go. Well, there you go. I know at halftime of the Oakland game, there might have been some frustrations in the locker room that he was a part of. There was. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Not necessarily his fault. I think the whole team was frustrated. Let's real quick. What would be the games where you would like to do one of those journey videos in UK history? The moments that would have been the best to have behind the scenes. Oakland game, half time, and post game is on my list. The famous plane ride from hell coming back on the tubby years with Gerald Fitch and Corey Sears. What else?
Starting point is 00:15:31 Kentucky Vandy, Hendy, Josh Heraldson. Oh, Kentucky Vandy. Josh Helson getting left in the bathroom stall. Definitely. Definitely would love to have had that. Something happened at the SEC tournament at halftime of that game when Reed Shepard and Rob and those guys were on the team. Something happened at halftime of that game. I think some coaches and players had to be separated.
Starting point is 00:15:50 What? Yeah. This is the same year as Oakland. Yeah. Now, wait a minute. Is this Ryan Lemon scoop? No, we talked about it. We didn't really go into detail, but something happened at halftime of that game.
Starting point is 00:15:59 So you're saying that half time, that was Texas A&M? I believe it was Texas A&M, yeah. At halftime of Texas A&M, and then we lost to Oakland. So you're saying that may have taken root against A&M. Yep. Well, give us a little scoop. I'm not sure. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail.
Starting point is 00:16:14 I know something happened. How about some scuttle bud? Coaches and players had to be separated. Coaches and players had to be separated. And if you remember, second half. Does anybody remember this? Reed and Rob were like non-existent that second half of that game. Shannon, do you remember this?
Starting point is 00:16:27 No. I mean, I'm not saying you're wrong. I have no memory of this, Drew. Help me, Drew. I know that story as the Oakland game. Maybe it happened twice. I heard that I know there was an issue, not a fight, but I know there was an issue at halftime of the Oakland game.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I have not heard of coaches and players being separated in the A&M. But same team, a week apart, maybe they went back to back. I mean, listen, yes, I mean, scoop two years later. Can we get at two years later, scoop? I know, I've said everything I know. Something happened at halftime. If you look at the game, too, they were a completely different team at the second half. Something happened to half time.
Starting point is 00:17:08 You said I don't want to get into the details. But you clearly have details. Okay, let's put it like this. Do you know more details? than you're saying? Not really. I don't. I know something happened.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Okay. He is backtracking. Because there's a minute ago. He goes, I don't want to get into the details. He is backtracking like a politician here. All right. We've brought it up on here, though. I don't remember it.
Starting point is 00:17:35 I remember Oakland. And Drew and I knew the Oakland thing happened the night up, which was part of why I said we've got to make a change. The Oakland thing, it's almost like people on the team thought other people should be playing instead of the ones playing. Yeah, I think, well, that's a whole thing, but I want to know what Ryan's talking about. Maybe he'll tell me during the break.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Court physical therapy. Let's say we go for the ice challenge, and we're hurting, which is probably what would happen. If we have pain, stiffness, or a numbing sensation, go to court physical therapy. Kentucky's go-to physical therapy group to help athletes, fans, and average shows get rid of aches and pains
Starting point is 00:18:15 and get back to what they love. If you have insurance deductibles, you might not even owe anything to receive care. Go to court.com. That's k-or-t.com. We'll take your phone calls to be right back here at KS. Barr. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game.

Starting point is 00:19:43 don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?

Starting point is 00:20:29 Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, mom, I'm a one.
Starting point is 00:20:46 I want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast,
Starting point is 00:21:18 hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike! I'm a comedian! I'm not qualified to give good advice! Join me and my comedian friends as we riff rant and recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit. This is Help for Mare. Hippocrat, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Listen to Help from Hippocrat as part of the Mike Coutura Podcast Network available on the IFRat radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know, I do feel like Shannon, when they pull up, this should be playing through the speakers. Blasting for the speakers like an ice cream truck. Yeah, I mean, if they come in, you play Ice Ice, Ice, Baby, and I feel like that would be he, I think people wouldn't be as negative about them. If you got to hear a jam while it was...
Starting point is 00:22:20 If they got out with their mask on and did the dance before they... They shouldn't have a mask. Might blow the cover, though. But they shouldn't have a cover. They are... Like, our police officers don't wear mask. Like, if you're... Like, why...
Starting point is 00:22:33 Our police officers... Our public officials don't... Like, why do they wear... I just think that's a bad look. Our military doesn't wear mask when they walk down the street. Now, they're in a foreign country. But this is America. Like, we're not supposed to be like...
Starting point is 00:22:48 all these you know see your face see what you got going on back there now I don't think people should like what do you call it docks people you shouldn't threaten those people
Starting point is 00:22:58 they're doing their job I'm fine but like you should not hide your face it's a bad in America we shouldn't do those things now go ahead like I was like hiding your face
Starting point is 00:23:07 you're giving the impression you're doing something wrong or illegal and if somebody you know listen every every job has people who occasionally abuse you don't know who did it
Starting point is 00:23:15 if you don't like I just I think that's a wrong Put everything else about it aside, that's a wrong precedent. Now, what about $50,000, though? You get a $50,000 bonus for signing up. Would that make you learn to do 15 push-up? Well, you already do the 15 push. Would that make you learn to run a mile and a half?
Starting point is 00:23:32 Yeah. Just dangle that money in front of them. I think we just lost our co-host. Dude, $50,000. It's a $50,000 sign-up bonus. Well, I could sign up and then not follow through with my responsibilities. I think they make you give it. I don't think the government's like, here, take $50,000.
Starting point is 00:23:48 work a week and then quit. I don't think they're going to let you do that. Yeah, I could learn with my short stubby little legs to get a mile and a half in 14 minutes. One person writes, you and Drew should be ashamed. Every man should be able to do 15 push-ups. Men are supposed to be protectors. Well, I'm not. At least you have self-awareness. I cannot, I can't protect myself, much less anyone else, Drew. So if that's what men are supposed to be, I fail. Yeah, I haven't even, I can't remember the last time. I've tried one. And I got a bum arm. Lay off me. And who cares if I can do one or not? All right. Some other players where people say they don't have any memories. Morricino Williams. Do you have a basketball or a memory of Morricino Williams?
Starting point is 00:24:34 I don't. One involving a basketball or one with him being around a basketball game? I can remember like Ben's antics. He and Dusty Mills laughing on the sideline. We can remember that. I don't remember anything involving basketball. I can't remember him getting the Rock in making a play. Joey Hart. I was going to say Joey Hart, but he was the madness superstar his one year. Yep, he did. Stacey Pool. Junior. I can remember antics, but they were elsewhere. Not on the court. Yes. He was. His friends live next door to me, so I remember Stacey Pool from being in the cul-de-sac, but not on the basketball team. Cam Fletcher. Well
Starting point is 00:25:16 The big memory I have of him Of him walking off the bench Going to the locker room during the game So your basketball memories him leaving Walking during the game Leaving the bench and going to the locker room Okay Didn't you date Angel Reese?
Starting point is 00:25:31 I remember him for that But I mean on the basketball Got Yeah I mean that's it's interesting when you don't have any Memory apparently Jordan Burke's Bought Fans stuff at Target So you were talking about the players
Starting point is 00:25:44 I guess it was fans. He was in. Oh, he also bought bags. Okay. Yeah, they were in line at Target checkout line. And he was behind some people. And he was behind him and he bought like a family's kosher. So that's very nice.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Good memory there. That is very nice. All right. Who's up next? Carson. Carson. Go ahead, Carson. Grats on 20 years.
Starting point is 00:26:05 I was just wondering if Stoops, when Stoops wins today, I should, this isn't an end. When he wins today, will he be the coach here next year? When he wins? Saturday? No, no, no, listen, if he were to beat Tennessee Saturday, I do think it changes the equation. A Tennessee win is probably the best thing he could do because it's probably even bigger than a Texas win because Tennessee's our rival and we lose to them so much. So, yeah, I mean, the equation does change if he beats Tennessee. I think that's fair. So you think that would be fair? And then, I mean, I don't know why the last guy was so bad about Dan Mullen because I feel like that would be a lot better than probably what we have now. and like any of these guys, I think, are more, like, highly operable and ready to coach versus, you know, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:26:51 Mark Stoich just seems like you don't have it anymore. I don't know what you all think. I appreciate the call. I don't understand that guy's negativity about Dan Mullen either. I mean, he kept saying Dan Mullen is Mark Stoops. Dan Mullen is Mark Stoops before the downturn. And if you told me tomorrow, Drew, can Kentucky hire Mark Stoop's first 10 years, I would say yes, go hiring. two times in 10 years he would have had us in contention for the playoff how many straight bowls did we make seven something like that seven or eight
Starting point is 00:27:22 yeah i mean i guess i mean you got to remember if the playoff system existed then like it did now twice we would have had a game with a chance to go to the playoff i think you would sign up for that the problem is not we get mark stoop's we're talking about mark stoop's today, not Mark Stoops' his first 10 years. Because I think Mark Stoops' first 10 years was objectively a successful coach at Kentucky. Yeah, Mullen
Starting point is 00:27:53 didn't have a losing season in Starkville, which is kind of a similar job to what UK is. Now, times have changed a little bit. I wouldn't mind if they hired him. I wonder about personality with Mitch Barnhart and Mitch having two of Mullen's last ADs in the SEC is kind of his
Starting point is 00:28:09 from his AD tree. Like, if he's If he's going to have any research on a coach, he's going to know the most about Mullen. Maybe Mullen will pass that test. I don't know, but Mitch will have the most info on Mullen because of his AD history. Who's next? Mike. Mike, you got about a minute.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Go ahead. Well, my question, if Stoops leaves, how much confidence do we have in Mitch to make this right higher? We don't want to be like little brother and have three different coaches on. the payroll. Yep, great question. Appreciate the call. It has to be a great hour. Drew or Ryan, what do you think?
Starting point is 00:28:48 Do you think Mitch is the, you have confidence in Mitch to make the right hire? I'd say his batting average is pretty good. He's had a couple swinging misses, but for the most part, I think his batting average is pretty high. I mean, let's look at his major hires. John Caliperi, great. Billy Gillespie, bad. Mark Pope, so far, so good. Joker Phillips, bad.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Rich Brooks. Good. Mark Stoops, good. Mingeyone, good. Kenny Brooks, good. Matthew Mitchell, good. Kairalzi, not so good. It's a pretty good batting. It is.
Starting point is 00:29:24 We'll be right back. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. Tucky Sports Radio. This segment is sponsored by Commonwealth Causes in their October bourbon raffle.
Starting point is 00:29:40 The Ultimate Bourbon Collection, drawing creeps up, Thursday. That's next Thursday, and it's frighteningly good. This month's prize Cauldron has 20,000 in bourbon, including the legendary Pappy Van Winkle vertical, but it doesn't just stop there. You get a Weller vertical, Blanton's eight bottle letter set, club blue set, and more. Big bourbon, big prizes, several lucky winners, commonwealth causes.org. Their bourbon raffles are a big deal, and the next one comes October 30th. Wings Day, dollar wings today and tonight. Try the new burgers as well. Tater kegs now become our third biggest seller
Starting point is 00:30:16 seller here behind the wings and burger. I got to admit something to you. Yeah. You bought an order of Tater kegs during the pregame show Saturday? I did. I stole a couple of them. I thought they were disappeared. Yeah, I stole at least two.
Starting point is 00:30:30 You could have asked, I would have given you one. You know, when you get up and do your manager things here, I stole them. I can admit it now. So when I was trying to keep the restaurant running and efficient, you decided that was the time to steal my food. To eat your food. Yeah. I know you didn't need it. You're up working. You're doing stuff. No, I did need it. But thank you very much for that. Two fan things.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Vanderbilt, you know, they beat LSU on Saturday. They stormed the field, but they were not fined by the SEC because they did a controlled field storming. They waited for LSU to leave the stadium and then stormed the field. Smart? Yeah, I think Vandy's done this before. too. This is the move. Safety first. Let the players get out of the way, then go have your celebration. What's it hurt to wait four or five more seconds? The Dodger. Shannon, is that a nerdy way to storm the field? We need to do this in an orderly way.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Everyone wait your turn and now let's storm the field. To me, it's not the same as just in the moment storming the field, but it's smart on their part. They don't get the fine and they still get the storm the field. So you're good with it. Yeah. All right. Texas Tech apparently had a tradition that I did not know, which is that during the game was it during the intro or after the game uh at some point during not not after the game it's either beginning or during during the game or beginning of the game they throw tortillas onto the field yeah i don't know how they got into this tradition they just whip tortillas from the stands and throw them onto the field apparently they've been doing this for years the big 12 says now
Starting point is 00:32:07 no more tortilla throwing 100 000 fine if the if the fans throw tortillas throw Tartias again, fair or foul? I guess it started something about when an announcer said there's nothing here in Lubbock, but the Texas Tech and a tortilla factory. So the students started taking that and bringing tortillas to the game and throwing them. At the set, the announcer. Only the games he was working. I think, well, let the kids do it, man. I mean, they're just tortillas.
Starting point is 00:32:35 It's not like you're throwing rocks or cans of stuff. Oh, cans of stuff. Yeah, that would be bad. Okay, you agree with it? Yeah, it's not going to hurt. Throw your tortillas. But, I mean, you've got to clean, somebody's got to clean it up. I mean, the birds will eat it.
Starting point is 00:32:51 On the field? Yeah. So just leave them all over the field. I mean, the bleachers, the bleachers at a football game are already littered in many fireball bottles and pom-poms and trash anyway. What's a few tortillas hurt? Maybe they have to clean it off the field. Like, the game is going on, and there are tortillas everywhere.
Starting point is 00:33:08 That's a heck of an arm. You can slingshot a tortilla from your seat. It's like a frisbee. You can. I don't think I can throw one that far So now you're just hitting people in the stands Just throw them in the stands Getting hurt with a flying tortilla
Starting point is 00:33:20 All right I'm team tortilla I have team tortilla What about you? Well I mean I don't know that we should just encourage But I'm whatever I'm fine with it
Starting point is 00:33:31 I mean it is a cool tradition And I do I didn't know that That it was because somebody said They didn't have anything but tortillas Do they do it just on When they play a certain opponent Or is it every home game? I'm not sure
Starting point is 00:33:40 But I do okay You all have taught me into it. If that's what an announcer said and it was a natural thing, then I think I'm good with it. If somebody said Lexon is nothing but a bunch of booms and hamburger buns, and we started throwing homeburner buns. They're just defending their community. I like the story we found out about Seth McGowan,
Starting point is 00:34:04 we knew he went to the hospital. But apparently during the game, he had to go to the hospital because they were worried about his chest. I don't know, but say worried about his chest. They take him out of the stadium on a golf cart. He rides past people on the way in his uniform, and they're like, hey, hope you're okay, Seth. He goes, he claims he had to rip the IVs out of his arm.
Starting point is 00:34:30 That's not good. I hope he didn't do that. They don't recommend that. And then he rode. Now, this is the cool part. He got back on the cart, and they drove him back through the tailgate lot, to the stadium and people were cheering him coming back in. If we had won, that would have been one of the cooler things that's ever happened, right?
Starting point is 00:34:52 Yes. And I had doubts about this, to be honest, when the broadcast said it, because he wasn't gone very long when he came back in, and I thought, I know the hospital's right there, but there's no way he actually did this. But hearing the story, makes it so much better and confirms it. When he got to the hospital, he borrowed someone's phone to watch the game while they were checking him out. But the article said, like, as he was going through, It's words started, because you know, if you've never been to a game, there are people
Starting point is 00:35:15 out, they're watching the game outside on their televisions. Like, words started traveling that he was coming, and like kids were running with the golf carts. I mean, that's kind of like a Willis Reed moment, you know? I totally love that part of the story, that he was getting applause, that he was driving back to the stadium. And if he could have somehow found a way to punch in that game winning touchdown, he'd be a hero here forever.
Starting point is 00:35:39 I agree. So I kind of feel bad. It's like one of those, what a moment it would have been, like James Young's dunk against Yukon in 2011, like we lost. So that dunk or Patrick Spark shot that bounces on the rim, there are these moments that if we had just won the game, Seth McGowan would have been one of those. It'd be a very cool story. I wish we had video of the people in the hospital. You know, you're in there, you cut your finger, making chilly watching football,
Starting point is 00:36:04 and then suddenly Seth McGowan full pads walks in and cuts the line in front of you. That had to be pretty surreal for everyone around soon. My question is, did he have to wait like I had to when I go to the emergency? Sir, it'll be two hours. We don't have a bed. That's a great point. That's a great point. Most time you go to your wait for error.
Starting point is 00:36:19 What's your insurance? He was back so fast. Did he change in your medical history? Just check me out. Check my chest and let me get back to the game. Is your address changed, sir? Where's next? Jacob.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Jacob. Go ahead, Jacob. Hi, good morning, guys. I just wanted my question with kind of all this. issues with college football now with Penn State firing their coach, Florida, and who knows, maybe Florida State at the end of the season. Do you think that affects Kentucky's decision at all with Mike Stubb? I would argue, and I've said this for last few days, I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:36:58 These other schools being open, even if there's a lot, should not change. You either want to make a change or you don't, and if you want to make a change, you make it. I think, you know, the reality is you don't know how many jobs are going to be open next year, Drew, There might be more jobs open next year. You don't know. I think you've got to go. Yeah, I mean, even though we're not stupid. If you decide you're going to do it, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:20 We're not stupid. We know there are better jobs than Kentucky that are open, but it's a loser mentality to be like, oh, no, we can't do it now because this is out there. If you have a problem, you fix it and don't sweat the other opportunities out there that you're going up against. And I think it assumes, Ryan, that there are only a few coaches that can do this. There is a coach out there in the grand scheme of college football.
Starting point is 00:37:42 There is a coach for Kentucky. There is someone out there who can win here and win at a big level. Your job is to find them. And I don't think there's just one. I think there are multiple people who can win, right? So the question is, can you find that person? And so I think that it might not be your first choice, but like it might be somebody none of us have ever heard of. I mean, let's use Mark Pope as an exam.
Starting point is 00:38:12 example, I thought Mark Pope was like the ninth choice or 10th choice for me. And it's worked. And I think some of those people we didn't get, you know, I think they would have worked too. I think there's multiple people that you can make work. And on the football side, Rich Brooks was probably the fifth, sixth, seventh choice. He won here. Mark Stoops was the fifth, sixth, seventh choice. He won here.
Starting point is 00:38:36 I will say if you go back to when they hired Mark Stoops and you go look at the list of guys Mitch talked to, They all ended up having success. He did a pretty good job compiling that list. I mean, Sonny Dykes was on that list. Wasn't Lincoln Riley? Lincoln Riley was on that list. I mean, his list of guys, Drew, ended up being a pretty good list.
Starting point is 00:39:00 And I think now more than ever, people might want the Kentucky job. I know some people say the opposite. But if you're a coach, and you pull up the top 25 poll right now, there are logos we haven't seen in that poll ever. and as we've said many times as fans, they're thinking, woof, Indiana, Vandy, BYU, Georgia Tech are top 15. Why not? Give me Kentucky's job with that money and I can do it too.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Exactly right. Who's next, Shannon? Robbie. Robbie, go ahead, Robbie. Good morning, guys. Congratulations on 20 years. Thank you. I had two questions.
Starting point is 00:39:31 The first one is, if we were talking the other day about stoops being fired and the guy was saying that if we fire stoops, we also have to pay the buyout of the assistant coaches. Yeah, I think there's only one or two. I think there's only like two coaches that have an assistant coach buyout. It's probably the two court. Actually, I think Bush's is over this year. So Brad White might be the only major.
Starting point is 00:39:58 There might be small buyouts for those other guys, but I think Brad White's probably the only one of any significance. And it's probably half million dollars or something, not something that would change the overall account. him. Okay. And then my second question was, so since Jeff Brom's name being mentioned kind of for Florida, do you think that Vince would follow him to Florida, or do you think he would try to find
Starting point is 00:40:22 his way back to where he belongs? You know, that's a great question. I mean, I certainly could see a world Vince as a coach here again. I don't think it's going to be immediate. Appreciate the call. It won't be while Jeff's at Louisville. But if Jeff were to leave Louisville, yeah. But I don't, why would Jeff leave Louisville?
Starting point is 00:40:38 I mean, they're going to pay him as much as he can make. anywhere else don't you think I he went there he grew up there I'm actually surprised that his name is high as it is at Florida even just from how good he is I mean he's been good at Louisville but I'm in my brain I don't have him as Florida should be after him but I mean it's just gambling odds and message boards but his name is everywhere for that job I mean that's surprising to me it is it's a little surprising to me and he's a Louisville guy you know I surprised there really won anything yet I mean they beat okay so they
Starting point is 00:41:09 beat Miami but I don't know I'm not saying he's not a great coach I think he is I just it is weird to me that Florida you know shouldn't he shouldn't he like win 10 games first yeah if if he were to go to Florida I do on the Vince thing I would think Vince would follow him to Florida if it would happen yeah he's not going to say at Louis yeah he's coming back here right away so if it were to happen this off season I would think he would yeah well all right we'll take a break 859280 27 I've got to tell you, we've talked about traffic on this show. Potentially the biggest traffic problem in Kentucky history outside of the, after the eclipse, is coming next something.
Starting point is 00:41:48 Oh, no. Would you like, do you know what it is? No, I don't. I'll tell you right after this. Okay, I'm sorry. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Starting point is 00:45:58 Let's see. What do I want to do right here? Oh, traffic. Okay. Yeah. You ready? Tell me what's going on. June 1st to September.
Starting point is 00:46:07 first in Louisville, did you know they are shutting down I-65 from the bridge down to down to the waters or past the waters? Oh, that sounds like a nightmare. Shutting it down. That's going to be terrible for me. It's going to be, yes, it'll be really terrible for you, Shannon. I thought about that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:28 Basically, they're going to reroute traffic. The traffic, I think, is going to have to go all the way around either the Waterson or the Gene Snyder, I guess. And then the people in town, basically, if you're on I-65, between the bridge and the Waterson, probably the bridge even in the Gene Snyder, Shannon, it's just closed all summer. So I should just basically buy a bed and keep it here at the radio station because going home is going to be I go Gene Snyder to 65 north, which means I have to pass where the Waterson is. Yeah, it's going to be awful for you.
Starting point is 00:47:02 Yeah. I'm sorry. Yeah, that's going to be really terrible. Thanks for this great news. Yeah, it's all summer Because they're repairing three bridges And they basically determine they cannot do it If cars are passing
Starting point is 00:47:12 So they're just closing it Unbelievable, that's going to be a nightmare And remember, that's one of the big thoroughfares In America I-65 going north That's basically the way you get from Chicago to Nashville You have to go through there Wow
Starting point is 00:47:29 What is even the detour? I think the detour is stay home Just Like mine is go on Bardstown Road all the way from Mount Washington Yeah, I don't know what the detour is. I guess the detour has to be the detour has to be the Waterson
Starting point is 00:47:44 or the Gene. It can't be the Gene Snyder. That's too long. I guess it has to be the Waterson. Shannon, you should look into downtown condos. That's what I'm hearing right now. Yeah. I mean, I would assume it's the Waterson, but then the Waterson is already so crowded. Like, if you, if you,
Starting point is 00:48:00 good night. Wow. Yeah, it's going to be awful. And they're doing three bridges out the same time. over the course of something. So June 1st to September 1st. So get ready for traffic Armageddon. And it will surely be done on September 1st, too.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Now, I didn't know this. I didn't know this. So I had it wrong. There are, the assistant buyouts are a little more than we think. Apparently 4.7 million, but that can be spaced out over a year. So it's not as big a deal. But how about this? No buyout for Brad White.
Starting point is 00:48:31 His contract actually ends this year. What if I told you, Bush Hamden's buyout is 1.4. million. Wow. Can that be paid over never? Are these contracts do they like
Starting point is 00:48:44 expired June 30th and renewed July 1st? He's got another year. He's got another year. Wow. So does that make you excited? All right. Let's go score less than three touchdowns
Starting point is 00:48:56 for the 15th straight time. Fired up ready to go. Bring on Tennessee. Who's up next? Adam. Adam. Go ahead, Adam. Hey, what's up guys? Congratulations on your website anniversary. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:49:10 I'm one of the Boons-Bissor-Trap day guys, so I appreciate all that you've done and brought a lot of entertainment through the website and the radio show. That's no problem. As far as, you know, Louisville signing a G-League player, how pissed do you think Ennis Canter is right now? Oh, no, I mean, he would have been, and by the way, I admit to say thank you, not no problem. I don't know why I said that. No problem. Thank you very much for those words. Ennis Cantor would have been able to play probably five years later.
Starting point is 00:49:43 I mean, he was at the worst time. And now it wouldn't even be an issue. And that team, I appreciate the call. We wouldn't have gotten as much fun as we had with Jorts. But that would have been a national championship team if Ennis Cantor had been on the team. Jorts would have been the backup. But Ennis Cantor with Brandon Knight would have been, you could have won the whole thing. Yeah, when Ennis didn't get cleared at the time, that was a big,
Starting point is 00:50:04 hole on the roster. Now, George stepped up, but imagine having Ennis and Jorts. I mean, what, Ennis was like the third pick in the draft or something crazy, wouldn't he? Yeah, something like that. All right, draft kings, we've got to make a pick. I'm going to pick a random college football game tonight. You ready? Let's do it. We won it with our Reed Shepard
Starting point is 00:50:20 pick last night. We did. He hit the two-threes in the second quarter. Banked that one in. I was celebrating. Nine o'clock on CBS Sportsnet tonight. The draft king's pick of the day, use the code KSR. Shannon, Missouri State, New Mexico State. It's a pick-em.
Starting point is 00:50:37 It's a pick-em. Well, I think New Mexico State's got the clear advantage here. They do not lose at home. Lost Crusay stand-up. You're picking New Mexico State. What are you got? I just wonder what was clear about it, though. He sounded so confident.
Starting point is 00:50:50 He was going to talk me into it. Kind of running out of time, Drew, so you should have to make your pick. I'm going to go with him. I trust his opinion. New Mexico State, they're the home team. Yes. Well, Shannon says it's clear. So roll Aggies.
Starting point is 00:51:02 I mean, if Shannon says it's clear, I can't go against Shannon if it's clear. We all heard that confidence in his voice. Missouri State offensive coordinator is Nick Petrino. They've got their head coach as a former Western Kentucky Hilltoper. It doesn't mean anything. Four or five Hilltopper connections on coaches. Missouri State Tigers. No.
Starting point is 00:51:18 Shannon, I'm rolling with you. They're the Bears. I'm rolling with you. I'm going to put. Did you say tigers? That's it tigers. So you thought Missouri State had the same nickname as Missouri, just coincidentally? Just that, you know.
Starting point is 00:51:29 You named the whole coaching staff and then got the math. What town is Missouri State in? Springfield. Is that true? I think so. Or did you just say it confident? Springfield. New Mexico State is undefeated at home this year.
Starting point is 00:51:42 Undefeated at home. It's hard to get to Los Crusades. But you don't want to count out Nick Petrino as your offensive coordinator, Missouri State. All right. Shannon, I'm rolling with you. I've already counted them out. I got $50 in draft kings right now on New Mexico. 50.
Starting point is 00:51:56 That's how much I believe in you. And if you're wrong, then that'll be a, a whole different situation. Two days away from the number one team in America coming in here to Ruff Arena. They're going down. Very excited. We're doing a pregame show for it. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:52:10 Yeah, it should be a lot of fun. Thank you all very much for listening. Come on out to the bar tonight. Have food. And we will be back here tomorrow. This has been Kentucky Sports Radio. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
