Starting point is 00:03:07 Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio. It is 859-2802287 here in Orchard Park. The text machine is 772-774-5254. A lot of people still saying nice things about you, Billy. One person says, you know, tell Billy I feel bad for him. I got the same treatment when I carried a plastic suitcase once.
Starting point is 00:03:38 I know how it feels. Now, granted, that was a middle school trip in the 1990s, but I still get it. Don't feel bad for me. I've got the best job in the world, and this was a fun trip. It's the attitude. That is a good attitude. I wish Shannon had that attitude more. You have the best job in the world.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Wait until Billy's been in this thing for 21 years. It'll change. Has it changed for Drew? Drew's always looked forward to these trips. This is actually probably my favorite. This has been a lot. It's a great. Really?
Starting point is 00:04:05 Yeah. I mean, it's a much shorter. It's more easy to say that. Yeah. But it's been a lot of fun. I mean, we've packed a lot into 48 hours. Yeah. You know?
Starting point is 00:04:14 I mean, we go home today and we'll be back home tonight. You all go home today. I haven't committed to that. Are you going to stay here? I'm here. Well, let's talk about being in Buffalo for a second. Because you, you know, we not only did the stuff, we went to the game. First of all, I've been to two NFL games this year.
Starting point is 00:04:30 They've both been two of the best games of the season. I mean, I was at Bears Bingles. That was amazing. Then last night was amazing. Buffalo, Tampa Bay, back and forth, back and forth, 4432, a score at Gami, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield. It was excellent. It was a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Cold, but an exciting crowd. I mean, that was a great environment, great time. Yeah, you know how to pick your NFL game. No, two for two. It was just a few weeks ago on Cover Zero, talking about how it would be a bucket list to go see the bills, not knowing that that would happen just a few weeks later. So just being here and getting a taste of how that fan base is was incredible.
Starting point is 00:05:11 They did not disappoint. I had the highest bar for them, and they jumped right over it. Drew was really in his element during the tail. I wish you could have been there with us. I'm sure it came through on the videos, but just going from tequila shot to Buffalo Wing and making these videos, it was a lot of fun. Yeah, so I was doing ESPN, so I couldn't walk around the tailgates.
Starting point is 00:05:30 But you could just, I mean, I could just sense all day. That's one of the happier times I've seen, Drew, was that whole environment. I mean, I was trying to think there, I'm sure there have been other experiences like that. But, like, he just, you just seemed like you were more sort of happy and thrilled in this Buffalo Bill's place than most anyone. I'm a tailgator. I don't get to tellgator. I don't get to tellgates in the country. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:56 I honestly wish I could have done more. The worst part of the whole thing is what most people would kill to do. When I was in that press box, the free food's nice, but it's snowing and Bill's fans are going crazy, and it's silent in there. I'm sitting next to Billy with his dress shoes. I was going to get out there. And I went to the top row. And you met somebody from Louisville, right?
Starting point is 00:06:12 Actually, this is an example of Bill's fans. Not only do they just say, hey, come to our tailgate, eat our food. I mean, you can walk up to any tailgate, and they will give you a hug and just say, eat our blue cheese. I'm just walking around. I think people noticed that I was lingering, and they're just like, hey, man, you want to sit down and they just slid in. And I just sit in their row.
Starting point is 00:06:29 And then it turns out one of them is from Louisville. But they had a cool story. Their dad was moved here from Syria and learned football in Buffalo. And then now they live in all parts of the country. And they brought their grandkids and brought him back for another game. So they had like this whole family experience. And here I am sitting with them and cheering for the bills. Yeah, everybody here is like so nice.
Starting point is 00:06:49 I mean, and Kentucky people are nice too. Like, I mean, most people who come to Kentucky with the first time, they're like, oh, they're nice. You know, you get this sort of stereotype, though, of people in New York. Buffalo is in New York, and people are extremely, they're just extremely nice. I mean, people at the tailgates, the games, even the media folks are nice. There were a couple women at the bar last night in their mid to late 50s trying to take Mario home nice. Like, there's, like, there's, I mean, that's a different kind of nice. But, like, there's, it's just a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:07:23 I will say, though, after the game, once their booze has kicked in, some of them start to show they're not so nice. Yeah, Shannon, a couple people were just yelling at Billy about his shoes on our walk home. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah, they were just yelling, where'd you get those shoes, T-coat guy? In the trench coat, it was like, man. Someone yelled from a school bus about Billy's trench coat. We're just walking by in the dark. I couldn't believe they even saw it.
Starting point is 00:07:47 What's funny is they're not even Kazar listeners. There's something about your face that just makes people want to give you a hard time. I'm all business, so I guess that's, that didn't vibe with some people in Bill's Mafia. But, you know, Drew is in the press box, and every time Buffalo have a big play, they'd start high-fiving Drew through the glass. Yeah, that's how out of place Drew was in there. So let's talk about the wings for a second, because everybody always wants to know about the wings when you come to Buffalo. So here's my take on the wings. All right, so like in Kentucky, what wings means depends on the type of place because people cook them different.
Starting point is 00:08:19 So like at KSbar, we smoke them. there aren't a lot of places that smoke them in Kentucky. It makes it taste different. I love it. It's my favorite kind, and it's a longer process. So then you go like a place. I'm trying to think other places I like that are good. Like the Kentucky Wing King place you took me to over there in Grey Line.
Starting point is 00:08:37 They like deep fry, different kind of taste also really good. So I like both of those. What's the place up in Northern Kentucky we go that does the double thing? Barley corns. Barley corn. Great blue cheese, by the way. By the way, I think those for me are the three best wing places in Kentucky. You go us, the Wing King guy and barley corns.
Starting point is 00:08:59 But there are three different ways to cook it. What I've learned in Buffalo is when they say wings, there's only one way they're talking about. They're just talking about frying it once, but not the way we're not breading it like we do, like Wing King does, just frying it. Remember, we tried to do that at our, little wing thing. We couldn't do it very well. It didn't turn out very good.
Starting point is 00:09:26 So they don't even consider a different way. And it's everywhere tastes the same, but it's good. Because it's like everybody, it's almost like everybody in Buffalo gets taught. There's only one way to make a wing, and this is the way you're going to do it. It's the opposite of Ryan Lemon. Consistent. It's very consistent. But like if you come from Kentucky, you may not, like, it's not like in Lexington, where there are so many different guys. It's one thing. This is what a Buffalo wing is. And you can't ask Shannon for ranch.
Starting point is 00:09:56 They don't have it. They just give you blue cheese. That's your only choice because they think that's the only thing you should eat it with. As somebody that didn't like blue cheese, I loved the blue cheese that I had on this trip. So it's converted me. See, I always go for ranch. I'm always a ranch guy. You won't get it here.
Starting point is 00:10:13 They will not give it to you. Yeah, they will not. This is. So for them, ordering wings is one thing. thing, one condiment. There are no other choices, which I find kind of interesting. And when we were tailgating, we spent so long looking for Pinto Ron, that famous fan, I mean, he's got his own Wikipedia page.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Yeah. And I finally found him, and I'm interviewing. And in the interview, I said, ranch, the man, like, his face changed, and he gave me this look. I had to apologize. I panicked. I'm like, I knew better. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:10:40 I'm a rookie. They won't do it. He's like, we don't say ranch, right? They won't do it. And I had at least a couple wings in, like, four different locations. And they were all exactly the same. And they were all very good. We ate wings that were fried in a World War II helmet at Pinto Ron's tailgate.
Starting point is 00:10:56 That's really strange. I don't think that's what people thought they were doing in World War II. It was going to have their helmets with wings. Well, we talked about this on Cover Zero. There was a filing cabinet they grilled meat in, the World War II helmet in wings. Like it was like anything but grills. And this stadium is in a neighborhood. And I don't mean that, like, theoretically.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I mean, it is in a neighborhood. There are just houses across the street. it's a two-lane road, right? So getting in and out is brutal. But it's a two-lane road. It's just like, it's just in a neighborhood. That's weird. I can't think of any.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Green Bay's got that a little bit, but Green Bay also has like a convention center and it's got a shop. Like, there's a lot of stuff around it. In Buffalo, this is just a neighborhood. And there is nothing around it except a handful of bars. Yep. And everything worked out at the bar you did the pregame show at, right?
Starting point is 00:11:47 Yeah, that was good. It's just I would say this. If you love football, you've got to come here once. I thought that I would say the best NFL experience is Green Bay. But I kind of think, Drew, this might be better. I mean, Green Bay's good. I've been to like 11 stadiums, and Green Bay would be second. But I kind of think this is first.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Yeah, it's first for me. It's not even close. In fact, when we get home, Titans, we got to talk. So are you dropping the Titans? No, I can't. I'm too loyal. I'll never drop them. I don't have that personality trait to abandon them. But I will say I had more fun at this Bill's game than any Titans game I've ever been to. Really? And I've been to many and I've been to big ones. I've even went to Bill's Titans Monday night football in Nashville and yelled at Bill's fans.
Starting point is 00:12:35 So they gave me a football experience. I've never seen. So you're contemplating a track. I'll never truly leave them. But I will, I am a Bill's fan. Like if the Bills are playing the Chiefs, that used to be a neutral game for me, I will be cheering for the bill. in any game from moving forward. Didn't they break up with you? Like they sent you an email? The Titans did break up with me.
Starting point is 00:12:53 We're going through it a little bit. They got some things to figure out. But I'm too loyal to leave them. But I have added the bills to my fandom. I also would say it was cool to see all the Kentucky guys here. Right? You had Ray Davis, Maxwell Harrison, Dionne Walker. We talked to all of them after the game.
Starting point is 00:13:11 Dion's a little quieter, but Ray Davis and Maxwell Harrison couldn't have been nicer to us. Right? I mean, Dion was nice, too. but Ray and Maxwell, Ray took a picture with us on the field. Maxwell and his family. His family was like KSR, like they were excited. That was neat to see all these Kentucky guys up here. Yeah, going into the locker room was cool.
Starting point is 00:13:32 So yeah, what did you think of that? You know, when the guys put clothes on. Weird, Shannon. It's weird. I'm going to tell you. They open up the locker room and all these dudes are naked. Do they not give anybody like a heads up? Like, hey, media's coming in.
Starting point is 00:13:44 I think they just, I don't think, I don't know if people don't care. They're walking like, they're just naked. Like, there's just stuff everywhere. And I don't need that. Like, we tried to talk to Ray Davis and he was naked. And I was like, Ray, you can put clothes on. We'll give you a minute. You know?
Starting point is 00:14:05 And I knew, like, we've done NBA. NBA is the same way. I knew what we were going into because we've done it. I feel like this is more naked than the NBA. It's a lot more people. It's just naked everywhere. And like a lot of body sizes. And, you know, Billy obviously felt overdressed all day, but I felt overdressed in there.
Starting point is 00:14:20 I thought about just going on a towel. Yeah, I mean, I thought it was a code. I thought I was going to have to get it. I wasn't eager because, I mean, it's a, it's something. Yeah, everybody was nice down in the locker room area besides the Tampa Bay staffer that almost knocked Drew over. But there weren't many media, too, for an NFL game. I felt like there were. Well, I mean, there were, there are more media, like that UK U of L game.
Starting point is 00:14:46 had significantly more media than this NFL game. Really? Oh, yeah. Significantly more media. So that's kind of weird that there's not, you know, there's just not that many people there. And in the locker room, you know, Josh Allen's just sitting there by himself.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I felt like, well, I mean, maybe he needs a conversation. Maybe he needs somebody to talk to. Wonder what network TV shows he knows. We talked about this on Cover Zero. I was also surprised that the post-game meal was not as good for Buffalo. I mean, Buffalo is just beaten Tampa Bay on national television. You know, you would think when they give the players a meal, Shannon, don't you think they'd give them something nice, right? Steak ribs.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Just on the way out the door, they just grab a Jersey mic sub. That's it. That's all you get? And only six inches. She don't even get a foot long. Dang. Speak for yourself. I love Jersey mics.
Starting point is 00:15:44 I like Jersey mics too. I was actually pretty jealous when I saw it. I was like, oh, no. But do you think that would be the post-game meal for the Buffalo Bills? Yeah, I don't know. Like, I wouldn't know if they'd put steak and mashed potatoes out there and do the whole nine yards. They may just want to get home. Yeah, you need to grab and go.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Everybody's trying to get to the house. They were excited, though. You said this on cover zero, but millionaires getting a free sandwich. They're very far enough. People can be really rich, and if you give them something free, they're going to be. They're going to be. Every single person loves free stuff. I also love UK Federal Credit Union.
Starting point is 00:16:17 This was the first time I'd ever really gotten to listen to the full broadcast of a game, Shannon, on this drive up here. Yeah. Yeah. I'm on there way too much. All y'all. We know. We know. Yeah. I mean, it is for all y'all. But I can see why people would want me not in their lives after they listen to that every. Because it's a lot. It's every other break for four hours, five hours.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Would you like to do it before I read the ad, would you like to do a quick impersonation of it? No, no, I'm good. You can do it. Go ahead. No, I won't give me a house. No, I'm fine. Come on. No, I'd rather you do a different accent like they've asked you to do. Yeah, they want me to do different accents.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I don't know if I can do that. You've seen our ads for all y'all, but what does it mean, Billy? It means we're for everyone in Central Kentucky. T-19 nurses, police officers, students, small business owners, even that one friend who swore they'd never switch banks. A UK federal credit union, we believe good banking shouldn't belong to a few. It should be for Oh, y'all. That's right.
Starting point is 00:17:16 It should be easy, local, and made for everyone. Membership eligibility required. It's UK federally credit union, federally insured by NCUA. We'll take a break. We'll be right back. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying,

Starting point is 00:19:24 On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going.
Starting point is 00:19:36 From the WNBA standout, Kate Martin, and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you,
Starting point is 00:19:47 but don't ever feel like you don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything.
Starting point is 00:20:11 I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth.
Starting point is 00:20:34 He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary, ordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant this went to a billion dollar fraud.
Starting point is 00:21:00 But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back at East Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-28027.
Starting point is 00:21:34 One person writes, Matt, what do you think happens if Cutter Bowley wants to, Cutter Bowley doesn't want to come back, but Stoops does? That would be a negative. That would not. that would not set the program up to have a lot of popularity in the offseason. Yeah, the excitement is all in the young quarterback and the pieces around it. I mean, I think you can convince people to get excited for a return to the regime, but I think it's going to have to include Cutter Bowl.
Starting point is 00:22:00 If it doesn't, then I think you're going to have a very hard time selling another year of this to a fan base. More important to keep Cutter than it is Stoops. Oh, yeah. I mean, no offense to Stoops, but that's just, that's just true yeah yeah i don't think there's any doubt that that's what all the excitement is even though the defense has been playing well the team's playing well bole flipping that switch has been the difference we we heard this weekend drew you and i that that some people uh former players close to stoops were frustrated with uh with ksr and really maybe me and you specifically um
Starting point is 00:22:40 saying that they think a lot of the negativity around UK football is our fault, which, you know, we heard this during the Calgary regime, but there were actually names associated to it this time, which was disappointing because they were people that, while we may or may not know, were people that we liked when they, either when they played here or had a job here. You know, what is your take? Like, when you hear that, what do you, what do you think? I mean, have I probably been too critical, sometimes?
Starting point is 00:23:13 sure, but really, there's never any... Have you been, though? I don't really here lately. That was about to say, here, like, my opinions come down to winning and losing, and they lost 11 straight games at home. I mean, I don't have much to say for you when you've lost 11 straight home games, and you go two calendar years without scoring more than two touchdowns. You are, that's negative enough on your own.
Starting point is 00:23:35 You don't need anything I could add to the situation that would make it worse. I think it's very convenient in all levels of life to win things. don't go well for you say it's the media's fault, right? Like, I don't have to name politicians that have done that, but like, it's easy to go. Things aren't going my way. It has to be the media's fault. And I'm not saying the media can't play a role. I certainly think they can.
Starting point is 00:24:02 But in sports, you know, in like politics, something can happen, and you can spin it as a win or a loss depending on how you word it. But in sports, you win or you lose. Like there's a result. You know, there's a final result. And it would not matter what you and I said. Eleven
Starting point is 00:24:23 straight home losses are 11 straight. I can't go on the radio and go, we actually won that game. You know. Well, nobody gets us 12 times in a right. Yeah, exactly. Well, we'll see you next time. I mean, so I genuinely think when you start doing that,
Starting point is 00:24:39 Nobody says it's the media's fault when things are going well, right? So nobody goes, you know, things are going really well. Thank you, media. You know, they end up taking credit for themselves. But I was disappointed because I think we have had the reputation for the Stoops era of being like way too positive. I've been getting killed for being too positive. I mean, I've gotten crushed for that for years, including during the end of Cal of have people saying, well, why are you so positive about football? and you're not about basketball.
Starting point is 00:25:12 And now it just goes to show, like, there's nothing you can do. Because this was like, there's apparently a consistent theme amongst some guys of that, of that Stoops era thinking that, and I'm not talking about the guys in Buffalo. They were, they did not say that to us at all. As a matter of fact, they were the opposite. But I just, you know, I don't really know. Like, there's just nothing you can do about it. But I hope that whatever happens in these last two games,
Starting point is 00:25:43 we get to a definitive place where the fan base is like as close to unified as they can be. Does that make sense? Yeah, definitely. Also, note, I picked them to win six games and go to a bowl this year, so I've been pretty positive. It's almost like, games over. Did they win? I'm happy.
Starting point is 00:26:03 To lose, I'm upset. And we can just start there, and that's usually how to form my opinion. This is two different teams. I mean, I'll note, think about the South Carolina game. I mean, we got destroyed at South Carolina. I think if you play that game next week, Billy, we might beat them. We probably would beat them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:20 So part of it is the team has just played exponentially better at the end of the season. Dave Chappelle used to have a skit called When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong. And this is the price of you keeping it real. Sometimes it can rub people the wrong way. I love that skin. I didn't know you were going to go there. There was just something about the way you said that. You kind of said that in like the widest way possible.
Starting point is 00:26:47 Love that show. When keeping it real goes wrong. Well, this weekend you pack some nice luggage in the trip. By the way, someone did say here on the text machine, Mario would have to answer this. When Billy pulled out the vegetable tray, did Mario say this is the widest trip I will have ever gone? gone on. Is that what you said? It's okay if you did. It's okay if you did. You went to Seattle
Starting point is 00:27:15 with Max Duffy. It's true. That's true. I think you had a little more flavor though than that those vegetables. Remember, Max did disappear for 24 hours after he met a woman in a bar. Well, never mind. 859-280, 2287. Maximo Adams committed to what was it, North Carolina? Where did he commit? I didn't even see that, to be honest. He committed somewhere else. It's another recruit that Kentucky had recruited at some point in basketball.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Was I right about North Carolina? North Carolina that Kentucky didn't get. Now, the three guys that they've been the top in on, they're still in on and have not committed, but none of them have committed. Are you at all getting worried that Mark Pope just cannot land these top guys? I worry I'm not all the way there yet, but I am like, all right, you do need to show us something. Because as good as Jasper and Malikau were and gets, those were homegrown, you got a significant advantage there. He still needs to go out and prove I can get one of these stars to add to the team.
Starting point is 00:28:22 Because even though I think college basketball is completely changed and you don't need four of them, you need one of them, one like that, especially these five-star freshmen coming in. And so far, I love Jasper Malachi, but I don't really count those for his recruiting, with the hometown factor there. I'm not worried, but he's got like two more chances and then I get worried. Like if he doesn't get Stokes, Holt, or Collins, well, then I'm really worried. And it's not like if he only gets one. It's like, okay, you know, I don't think you're ever going to see an era where people get five of them anymore
Starting point is 00:29:01 because I just don't think the money is there anymore for any team. but I think two is a reasonable request. And I can be talked to, well, okay, you got two last year. They were Kentucky kids. You kind of had to get them. That's fine. But all these other schools have one already for next year. Some of them have two.
Starting point is 00:29:22 And we still don't have any. Now, if we close out and get them, I'm not going to be worried. But I am a little worried. I'm surprised that's been as hard as it's been. We've heard about them leading a lot, but you've got to close. That's exactly right. What good does it do to lead? Top two is great, but let's get a jersey on them.
Starting point is 00:29:37 And even the one you got last year, a Caden Lewis left. He ended up not coming here. So we'll see. 859-280-2287. We haven't taken the call you. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tegis Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. Is pain stiffness or a numbing sensation preventing you from enjoying watching your favorite teams compete this fall. Well, this is now court physical therapy can help for over 30 years. Court's been Kentucky's go-to physical therapy group to help athletes, fans, and average shows get rid of aches and pains and get back to what they love. If you met your insurance deductibles, you might not even owe anything to receive care through the end of the year. Visit court.com today. That's k-o-r-t.com. Let's talk just for a second. The women's game tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Kentucky women play Purdue. It is, it starts at, what, six? Uh, let's look. Right here in front. Seven. Starts at seven. They're going to have the men's game on while the women's game is going. So you can actually watch both. Oh, in the state?
Starting point is 00:30:45 Like at Memorial? In Memorial. They're hoping to get a big crowd, one, because it's their first game against a really good opponent, against Power 4 opponent. And we have a good team. We have a top 25 team. And second, they have one of the top recruits in America coming to visit. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:31:02 So, you know, Kenny Brooks called into the postgame show. I thought did a really, really good job calling into the post game show and sort of asking people to come. He was great. You ought to listen to his interview. But hopefully people will go and pack the house and you'll be able to watch the Michigan State game while it is going on. Yeah, they deserve the support. Claire Strach has been phenomenal, excited for this women's basketball team this year. And you're right.
Starting point is 00:31:31 If you missed Kenny Brooks' interview in the post game, go back and listen. He was really good. That was very cool. I like that you all did that. You know, normally you get the game recap, but to have an active coach of another sport on just talking a little shop. Yeah, I like that. You gave us some Buffalo tips, but it's also a big game for them. And I saw that they're doing a blue out, wear blue.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I mean, you should always wear blue. Wear blue. Really pushing it for that one. So if you want to go to that game, make sure you do that and get ready. And then, of course, the Kentucky game is at a weird time tomorrow. It's at 630. You know, normally we're the late game. Poor Michigan State, whoever they play, they're always the early game.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Have they ever played in the late game? I don't think so. I really don't. It's like Kentucky Duke and Kansas, when two of them play, that's the late game. Michigan State is always the early game. And that's how it should be. I think they're the odd man out in those programs. But who are you going to replace them with?
Starting point is 00:32:22 No. I mean, they're probably the best team to put in it. But like no one wants to see Michigan State. They probably should be replaced by Yukon. If you wanted to make that the real Champions classic at this point, wouldn't you do that? Wouldn't you make it Yukon? Yeah, I mean, the name champions. Not that we have a ton of them lately, but Yukon should be in the conversation here lately.
Starting point is 00:32:43 You've got the, I mean, right now, those are the four best programs of the last 20 years. And then when it goes to New York, I mean, it already goes to New York. That'd be the hardest ticket in the world if you went to New York. We're a five and a half point favorite. Does that surprise you? A little bit. They got a good win already over. I was at Arkansas.
Starting point is 00:33:02 I thought this would be one of those one-and-half, two-and-a-half-half-type spreads. Five-and-a-half kind of opened my eyes a little bit. I was excited to bet, thinking a big bounce back. That's college basketball at a game like that. That's a little too many points for me. In the past, Kentucky could lose this game and you could chalk it up to being really early in the year. But after that loss to Louisville, it's just changed my whole perception of what happens with this game and what happens the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:33:25 Well, I mean, part of it is why I'm not Jalen Lowe. All right, so yes or no, do we think Jalen Lowe plays again? this year. This is a guess. So like nobody gets held to the fire for it, but yes or no? I'm going to say yes. Shannon? Plays again this year?
Starting point is 00:33:40 Absolutely. Yes. Okay. Yeah. I'll be different to say no, but I genuinely don't know anything. It's a complete guess. Yeah, I'm going to say no. And that's a gas.
Starting point is 00:33:50 No, I don't know anything. I really don't. I would tell you if I did. I mean, the whispers are leaning no, but I'm not sure if the whispers know anything. I actually think it's probably going to be. decided today or tomorrow. I don't know when we'll find out, but I think it'll probably be decided today. I mean, it's, what makes it hard is it's not a medical, I mean, it's a medical decision, but it's really more of a personal decision. Do you want to do this all year and kind of maybe
Starting point is 00:34:18 deal with pain, go back and forth, back and forth, get it hurt again, potentially get it hurt to where you have to have a real surgery, or do you just want to wait, do the surgery and be 100%? you know, Lamont Butler, they went through this with Lamont, and he played. Then he had to have the surgery in the offseason, and it hurt his NBA chances. Now, Jalen's not probably going to the NBA at the end of the year. He doesn't have the urgency that some other guys. So he doesn't have the urgency Lamont did, but he could get another NIO year. That's my thing.
Starting point is 00:34:51 Pope mentioned they got to meet with the family and the agents when talking about this. It was weird he said agents. He said them before the medical professional. I mean, it has certainly never been the case that I've heard a coach say in deciding the future of a player via injury, we have to talk to the agents. Now, he's probably, I mean, he's being, again, being honest, but Drew, you don't hear that a lot. No, the order of which he named the process was very telling of the current state of basketball that it's agents then doctor. I know it's just how he said it, but they do have to consider that. And it being so early in the year, you know it's going through his head.
Starting point is 00:35:28 I could fix this now, and I will be ready to go next year. The eligibility will be worked out. But if I push it and say I hit it in February, what's my summer look like, then what's the next season look like? He really has to consider just doing this. I mean, you're sitting there asking, are you going to sign up for four or five months of pain? You know, like you roll over wrong in bed, ow. No, seriously, like, again, ask somebody who's had it or ask somebody who's had back,
Starting point is 00:35:58 pain, that sort of at any moment you can get this jolt of pain is not something fun to live with. And then if you're going to have to have the surgery at some point anyway, you can see the mindset. Now, selfishly, though, we need him. And we can be really good with him. And so that's hard. And, you know, we don't know him at all. He might have that attitude.
Starting point is 00:36:22 Like, I love these teammates. I want to be a part of this year. Or you might have the attitude of I've got to look out for me. and if I have to step away in January, that could cost me a whole year of eligibility. And Lamont Butler had no more eligibility. So it was like if Lamont doesn't do this, his college career is over.
Starting point is 00:36:40 So it's different with Lamont Butler than it is with Jay one level. No pain, no glory. These guys are really highly competitive people. Highly competitive people. That's why Trent Noe is lying to the medical staff trying to get back into the game. I mean, these guys want to play and represent Kentucky. So that's something like mentally that takes a toll on you too if you're going to miss the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Yeah, it's tough. We need him though. I mean, I said at the in the summer. He's the one guy we can't really afford to lose and we might lose it. Just so ridiculous the injury situation. And I don't believe. I don't think people want to throw the trainer out. But it seems just like fluke injuries, all of them.
Starting point is 00:37:23 What do you make of the, of Pope saying? that he basically screwed up, that he has not, the team, he has not gotten the team to where he thinks they should be yet, and that he blames himself. I thought his last three speaking appearances were very wacky, but I did like that he was open, like, hey, I'm a little behind of where I want to be.
Starting point is 00:37:44 He's like evaluating himself, you know, a lot of people will just lie to you, sugarcoat you tell it's beautiful. He's like, I'm a little behind where I want to be, and I like as our fan base that wants to know everything that he's admitting in that. Now there's part of us like, All right, we'll fix it.
Starting point is 00:37:56 But I'd rather him say I'm behind and I'm mad at myself and sit here and try to sell me something that he doesn't have, you know, under control yet. I agree with that. I agree with all that. I'm surprised, though, because we heard none of this before the Louisville game. It's true. Like, before the Louisville game, we just kept hearing how good we were,
Starting point is 00:38:13 that we had a chance to be special, that we, I mean, like, it's odd that one loss. This is part of why I should, like, I'm even more fascinated about what happened in that locker room, Because even his tone, everything about him has been different since that locker room. And I just, and you can't, if you're just a human being, you're going to be curious what happened in that locker room. And again, I don't know what happened, but that lends to the credence of maybe Mark Pope was a little too amped for the game. That led trickled down to the players.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Maybe he was trying to take ownership of his mistakes, but really couldn't be transparent in exactly what happened. But part of that job is having your team ready to go on the road and fight for, each other and it's you against them and it dropped the ball on that one i mean you're going to have to figure out how to get your team ready for a rivalry game uh one person writes matt this is for shannon he needs to watch the new aussy documentary on paramount he will love it no yeah i would i didn't know there was an ozy documentary but i will go back and watch that there you go i didn't know that either another person says matt what about john caliperi's latest rant it's one of the classic ones for him i haven't heard i didn't heard it here what is it i didn't hear that either
Starting point is 00:39:25 I know he had a close game recently, but I didn't know about any rants. I feel like he said, I saw something from him. Can you guess it without seeing it? We haven't had time to practice defense. He probably said that the media doesn't know what they're talking about. Didn't expect this, did you? Did you see what I did? Did you see what I did?
Starting point is 00:39:46 Yeah, from Little Rock to Bittenville. No, I don't know what he said. They ended up winning, but they played. They won. That game was close, though, against Sanford. But, again, he likes to play those teams against that are good from the bad conference. Would you rather beat St. Johns or Arkansas this year? I say Arkansas, but it's strictly because it's there and you want to win the SEC.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Yeah, and St. Johns is really good. So I would say, I don't, I mean, it's crazy for me to say this, but I don't have any animosity to Rick anymore. And I used to have the most animosity. And I just can't. I mean, they were playing Alabama the other day. I was rooting for them. You know, I was rooting for Rick. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:40:32 Like, I can't think of a person I've ever flipped on more. Like, if you go back through my history of people that at a time I really didn't like, but then later, I found myself liking it. It's probably like George W. Bush and Rick Petino. What a duo. I mean, George W. Bush seems like he would be, like, seems like a nice guy. So you like him now? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:59 Is it the opposite with Trump? Did you ever like Trump? No. You'll get there. Give it time. I don't know about that. I mean, that's one. You'll come around.
Starting point is 00:41:09 That's doubtful. I mean, I'm sure if I met him, like, I'd be, like, nice in that moment, but no. But George Sopi Bush, like, don't you think he'd be fun? Oh, yeah. Watch me hit this drive is all I needed to see that he could probably be a fun time. Yeah. I think he'd actually probably be a lot of fun, you know? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:26 But in Petino, I. My opinion has changed 180. Well, you guys broke bread. I mean, he came on the show, did the interviews, so. But even before that, there was something about when he took the St. John's job, I just wasn't mad anymore. You know? Donate money to football.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Yeah. All right, 859, 2802. I don't know why I keep giving the number. I'm not taking calls. We'll do it. We'll do it again tomorrow. It's just like a natural thing. We'll take a break.

Starting point is 00:46:23 Opportunity starts here, access to housing, child care. and to a stronger Kentucky. 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, I heard you all talk about this in the post-game show. At what point to all the injuries you start to look at the staff, the way they're trained, et cetera. I mean, there may be a point,
Starting point is 00:46:42 but I can't do that with a separated shoulder. Like, that's not, it just happens. There's not, it's not a train. It's not like an ankle. And you can argue with an ankle. Maybe you build up the strength or whatever. But when you separate your shoulder, it gets knocked out of joint. What's he supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:46:55 I mean, I don't know. We joked about the ankle doctor in the past, but last year we were courtside for Kerr's injury. Watch it happen. You turn ankles in basketball. Back-to-back shoulders, it stinks, but I can't just make some big grand criticism of the trainer when Jalen Lowe, who's tiny,
Starting point is 00:47:13 is trying to box out Mo Diabate in practice and separates his shoulder. I don't know that's on the trainer. I forgot about the Kirkreeze injury. Him getting back. That was crazy. I will remember that forever. That was crazy. That is, if you're going to have your last play.
Starting point is 00:47:25 Yeah. See, he's in college this year, isn't he? Fun fact, he was spotted at Fayette Mall the other day, but he's playing for Cincinnati, so maybe he just misses us. He was at Fayette Mall? Yeah. How's he doing? Is he getting minutes?
Starting point is 00:47:34 I haven't kept up with his time there, but that's where he is, and I guess he just wanted to come back for our. It's interesting, Villanova is splitting their point guards, Aitne Lewis and Devin Askew, both with Kentucky connections. Kevin Aske was still playing basketball. By the way, if Drew seems like he's more, like, you know, more kind of following the rules and button up. Yeah, his in-laws are sitting here right now. Well, Abby has gone to some extreme lengths to make sure I'm home from Buffalo. Yeah, I mean, Abby's like, I want to make sure
Starting point is 00:48:04 Drew doesn't do anything on the road. So she literally sent her in-laws from Ohio to make sure you don't do anything. It is pretty bizarre. Abby's dad and stepmom, Jimmy Conyer here, they live in Northwest Ohio, but they just happen to be passing through Buffalo this morning on the way to Niagara Falls. What a random occurrence. I'm glad to have you all. Keeps the streak alive, too, by the way. We got a listener. The thing about Kentucky fans It's just crazy because, like, we had this to do the guy Tate, who's just a listener who lives in Buffalo. He came to watch the cover zero taping last night. And in talking to him, he was the guy that had the sign at the game that told Caliperi go to Texas.
Starting point is 00:48:42 That's how he introduced himself. Who knows there he was. Who are the, who keeps walking into this house? There's another person walking into the house. Mario, go find out. Jim, did you bring that guy? Go make sure there's nothing going on. Do you think we beat Michigan State?
Starting point is 00:48:57 I do. I'm not going to put my hard-earned money on it with that spread and the question marks around the back court, but I feel like they're going to bounce back. And it's not just bouncing back from Louisville. They had a horrible game in New York City last year. So I think both of those will weigh into them being laser-focused and putting together a good game.
Starting point is 00:49:14 Champions Classic has not been kind to us in the last five to six years. It's time to get a victory, Michigan State-specific. is one you need to get when you draw them in it every three years. So we need to get it. And I also think it's the kind of team, Billy, that if this team's going to be good, you win games like this, right? This is a team that we are more athletic than we should be more talented than. The only way they're going to beat us is by being tough and rough,
Starting point is 00:49:43 and we have to make sure that doesn't happen. And this is a game where you see at least one guy rise to the occasion. Who is that person on this team? I remember Maxie going off. Well, Maxie had one of the great, I mean, I don't know that we've got a Maxie on this team. Well, we'll find out. I mean, well, you got a Mo Diabante from New York City who wants to play in the garden. So that's our, that's our homecoming player to watch, fresh off his double double Friday night.
Starting point is 00:50:05 One person writes, Matt, what do you think about the cop at the A&M South Carolina game? Well, I mean, he was clearly in the wrong. I mean, the cop was clearly in the wrong. It's one of those things that when you see it, you go, how many times does that happen when we don't have a camera? You know what I mean? Like that's because that was He bumps into the players And actually it looked to me like
Starting point is 00:50:27 Nobody was necessarily at fault with the bump It just kind of happened But then like after it happened See I thought he's a fault with the bump He did walked around them He wedged between them with his arms extended He kind of went like pushing his shoulders up at him And then it was ready to yell at him
Starting point is 00:50:43 Maybe I need to watch again You think he you think he He kind of went like You think he buh Yeah he was ready to take contact Oh you think he was like Setting a pick A movie movie
Starting point is 00:50:52 screen. And people have noted when you work at games, whether you're an administrator, me and media, Mario with a camera, a police officer, when players are coming that tunnel, you get out of the way and give them a path. You just know the team's coming out, step over. So you think not only did he split them and threw his arms up.
Starting point is 00:51:08 You think he set a moving pick and then called the foul on them. Yes, that's what it looked like. Was ready to yell at them as soon as it happened. He was. That was quick. I think them being down 27 to 3 or whatever that moment, wait on it. I think that's a guy that can't handle his football emotions. What's crazy is I think it's worse for him if they don't come back and win.
Starting point is 00:51:27 Yeah, and also, I feel like they could have sent him home without saying it, but they made sure everyone knew he got sent home. So they released a statement that he was getting sent home. And then they released a statement, he'll never be back. Oh, I didn't see that. And they issued it quickly. Yeah, I mean, they're like, we'll never assign him to a game again. Well, good. It's unacceptable for law enforcement to do something like that. Some stupid fan that has a pass on the sideline, sure. But that's in the professional Billy with a strong take there. Let me put my P-code on. It was weird to just... Any other important things you need to say?
