Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280, 2287. Text machine 772-7524. One person writes, Matt, you're the king of I, I'm telling you. new story but not telling. Yes. That's probably true. Keeps him wanting more. Now what you just said,
Starting point is 00:03:35 told us? Well, no, but I have to say, like, I'm explaining to you how he got Joe there, and I could have just said, we never talked to him and act like that didn't happen, but it did, and I watched it, and it mattered. I'd love to tell, listen, I'd love to tell you. I just, there would be people who would punch me if I said that. And so I'm like, I can't do that. But it was, you know, it was, it just told me that Mark Stoops was going to do what it took to win here, and they did. Yes. I can share a fun line from that night that I had still, still embarrassed about it.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Joe Kraft was to my right. I've never felt smaller in my life. You didn't even know him until that night. I mean, I knew of him, but I never met him. Of course. And I remember we're ordering and Joe ordered, and then it came time for me to order. And I ordered the fries with J.C. sauce. And I said, what is J.C. sauce?
Starting point is 00:04:21 And the server's like, it's the Joe Kraft sauce. And I just slid under the table because Joe heard and kind of winked at me. But on the menu is the jays. was the JC saw. That's pretty good. That's how you know. Yeah. That's how you know.
Starting point is 00:04:33 One person writes, Matt, well, he actually takes some shots at me. But then he says, you should work on the way you talk to people on the phone. You may be right about that. But when I say, hey, everybody, we're not going to talk about this. And then you start talking about it. And then I say, we're not talking about that. And then you talk over me and keep talking about it. If you, a rule is not a rule without what?
Starting point is 00:04:55 A punishment. You have to. You have to. Because if you don't, then you encourage. I like Jerry. I've been much meaner to Jerry than that, and he'll call back. But we were talking about stoops. Now, if Jerry called, I would let him talk about this.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Call back, Jerry. No. Which is what's next. Okay. So, first of all, do you think we'll have someone, do you think there are people who believe they already have someone? I tend to not think that's true. Do you think they already have someone?
Starting point is 00:05:31 I don't think they have someone, but I think Mitch had probably been doing his due diligence for about a month, just lining up some guys just in case. I think they do that a lot, though. Yes. But like, you don't expect an announcement tomorrow. No. You got to move quick in this.
Starting point is 00:05:44 There are players right now looking for a place to go. Signing day is Wednesday with the portal. But you think he might do it tomorrow? No, I'm just saying they have to. Now, I'm going to disagree with Ryan. They have to do it tomorrow? Okay. I don't know if they do it tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Maybe not about tomorrow precisely, but I'm going to disagree with Ryan. I think the fact that they weren't even prepared to fire stoops tells me they were not ready for this. There should have been a plan in place before you even kicked off against Louisville. I think they had a list, like you said, but I don't think they have a part. Now, maybe I'll be wrong. Maybe we'll announce it today. I do think, though, let's talk about two people that the names that are coming up.
Starting point is 00:06:17 There are three people whose names I think are on the list and maybe are the three people. Will Stein, Brian Hartline, and Dan Mullen. Yep. So let's talk about why each one of them. Will Stein from Lexington. Louisville. From Louisville. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Dad played at Kentucky. Correct. He played at Louisville. Played with Teddy Bridgewater. Am I right about that? I don't know. I'm sure who he's a quarterback. He was a backup quarterback.
Starting point is 00:06:43 I think he was the quarterback got taken out. Teddy Bridgewater came in maybe against us. And there will be people that tell you that he wanted to go to Kentucky. There just wasn't really a spot out of high school. Grew up a Kentucky fan. Grew up a Kentucky fan. So even though he played at Louisville and all that, Blood was Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Went to Trinity. Offensive coordinator at Oregon. Most people think really creative mind. There's a YouTube video out there that you should watch today. It is Will Stein explaining his principles, Will Stein explaining his principles of offense for like nine minutes. You want to get a sense of who that guy is? Go watch that YouTube video.
Starting point is 00:07:19 That's Will Stein. He says, I feed the studs. He said, I feed the studs. And make sure my guys get the ball. The guys that need the ball, get the ball. Oregon is in the place. They will not be playing, though, in the championship game. I think that's important.
Starting point is 00:07:30 If you're talking to a coordinator who's playing in the championship game, they're a little busy this week. Will Stein is busy, but he ain't as busy as them. True. Something to think about. Brian Hartline, what's his job? Is he the OC slash receivers? OC.
Starting point is 00:07:44 And the receiver room loves him, and that's the Ohio State Receiver. This is Ohio State Receivers. Brian Hartline, you may recognize that name. Mike Hartlines's brother that was our quarterback. And it was on the staff right now. and is on the staff right now. Played a big role of bowling. People couldn't know more about the UK program than Brian Hartland.
Starting point is 00:08:03 I have a very good source, like the sourciest of sources, that says if we offered the job to Brian Hartline, he would take it. Wow. Okay. Now, I don't know that we've offered it or even will, but I know write it down if we offered him the job, he would be the coach absent him getting another better job. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Okay? And they are playing this weekend. they are playing this weekend, though. I think that's important. Then the third guy is Dan Mullen, took Mississippi State to number one in the country, which is crazy to think about it, coached at Florida, didn't do great at Florida, but in hindsight did better than people give them credit for when you compare to the other coaches that were at Florida. Now at UNLV, and in one year got UNLV good, and they might have been the worst program in the country for many years. I think those are your top three contenders.
Starting point is 00:08:57 be others. Others may emerge. But I know that Mitch Barnhart will be interested in all three of those. And if there's a list of four or five, those will be three. What do we think of those three contenders? For me, and it seems like a lot of the fan base, Will Stein
Starting point is 00:09:15 and Brian Hartline are on their own tier up here. Like get one of those two and everybody will be happy. Stein, I think people, obviously, his offense is a lot of fun. He's done great at Oregon with multiple quarterbacks. But just the connection. We like having one of our own. Grow up Kentucky fan, family season ticket
Starting point is 00:09:31 holders, we kind of give that a bump and he's deserving in a hot name right now. Heartline, though, is maybe the best recruiter in the country at Ohio State. We all know the Ohio State receiver room. He's had that job for a long time. Their fifth best receiver gets drafted. The potential of him bringing some of those
Starting point is 00:09:47 guys with him and some of that Ohio state juice that he's had for a while. He can recruit the state of Ohio. Can recruit the state of Ohio. And as you, whoever just said it, more so than Stein, He knows what's going on more than anyone because his brother has been hand in hand with Cutter Bowley's development this year. And he'll know the strengths and the weaknesses of the program. Mike will know and Mike will tell Brian.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Who to keep, who not to keep? Yeah. Yeah. So I love both of those options. I might lean Stein just because, you know, being a fan, I would love having one of our own. Not that Brown Heartline doesn't like UK. But either one of those, and I'd be very happy. So you would lean Stein.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Probably, but it's 51. 49. Stein's just not as proven. Let's say it was Dan Mullen. Would you be mad? I'd be a little disappointed. It wasn't one of the other two. And I think back to Mullen kicking our tail at Mississippi State every year. I think he went to eight straight bowl games there.
Starting point is 00:10:37 I didn't love him as just a person back then. Might have to delete some tweets, but his record's undeniable. I would say I want it to be, I'll take either Stein or Heartline and be thrilled. I've kind of flipped in the last 24 hours. I kind of, the more I hear about Heartline and think about him recruiting Ohio, he might have slightly gotten ahead of time, but what I'd want to do is just talk to both of them and see who do you think it is.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Like, I kind of do trust the judgment of the people that'll make that decision. If they got those two guys in a room, you figure out which one's best. Mullen, I'm kind of like you. Definitely third. I wouldn't love it, but I wouldn't hate it. I don't think it's, you could do worse.
Starting point is 00:11:19 But I'm of this belief, Ryan. Go get a young guy. All right? Adam Luckett said it great. on the KSR thing yesterday. Swing for the fences. If you hit a foul ball, in three years we'll swing again.
Starting point is 00:11:32 But let's go see if we can find Ellie De La Cruz and let's stop bringing in retreads. Right? It doesn't work. It doesn't work. But let's go for the fences because here's the difference between now and in past years. Now, if they win, we could keep them.
Starting point is 00:11:50 True. Like Kurt Signetti. We could keep them. Used to be if anybody had any real success, they'll be gone, but now we can keep them in this new era. So let's swing for a superstar. Let's swing for our Signetti. Maybe we don't get it.
Starting point is 00:12:06 But I think I'd rather do that than bring in a guy like Mullen, who I feel like would do fine, but we're six or seven wins and we're probably solid. Why don't we swing for the fences to be great? So are there some guys out there that they should at least go say no, swing for the fences? No, but I think those guys are swinging. I don't want John Groot. I don't want that. We saw it with Belichick.
Starting point is 00:12:26 It didn't work. And he had coached him for how long? Yeah. I mean, if he comes, I'll talk myself into it. But like, I don't want that. It's not, that's not working right now. That's the UK athletics hire. Let's do something that would have been good in the year 2000.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Yeah, exactly. That's exactly like that. Let's go by my space. Don't give them that idea, Matt. Don't do it. No, take out alone and do it. Let's, so when I say swing for the fences, I mean swing for, like Will Stein or Brian Hartline is going to get offered a great job one day.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Let's try to beat him to it. In Hartline's name service at Penn State. And maybe he goes and does that. And you can't help that if that happens. But it'd be nice if you got him here. And with Hartline, Ohio State fans love him and talked about him replacing Ryan Day eventually. Now, Ryan Day is going to be there a long time now that he won a championship.
Starting point is 00:13:20 But, you know, if Ohio State loves him, I think we can love him too. You know, when Mullen was at Florida, he left kind of a messy situation down there when he left, right? I don't think the people were real happy with him. Well, but they're Florida. They haven't been happy with anybody. They fired like seven coaches. But if you look back at all the dudes since Spurrier that they've gotten mad about, he's been better than all of them. I guess Urban Meyer was really, but besides, but like all these kind of no-name guys, he was better than all them.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Yeah. Will Stein's mid-30s. Brown-Hartline's not 40, probably just beneath it. Mullen's got to be in his mid-50s. I'm ballparking here. I love just youth. Like you said, if you could keep him, maybe you have something for a long time. I want a young guy.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Like, I want a dude. They need to be my age or younger, in my opinion, for this new era. Somebody that's hungry. Yes. Well, hungry for sure. Yeah. Like, for sure. I think most of these guys would be hungry.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Even Dan Mullen's probably hungry because he's embarrassed the way Florida ended and he's coaching at UNLV where eight people aren't the game. but I think Will Stein and Brian Hartland like they're going to make or break their career if they come here. All right. So they're going to want to do whatever they can do. Another Will Stein angle is our QB of the future
Starting point is 00:14:35 past cutter, Ponatowski, who's pushed back his signing day a little bit, still committed. Oregon was second and Will Stein was his recruiter. So you got to assume he'll be here. I mean, it was a two horse race for him. So if he were going to step away or, you know, with our opening, if he were considering stepping away, bringing in the guy that finished second in the recruitment is a pretty good idea too.
Starting point is 00:14:51 Go ahead. Do you think Mitch is making these calls? calls like this morning, like right now? Yes. Yes. It's happening as we speak. I think the question is, who are the decision makers? Last time it was Mitch Barnhart, Dwayne Peevy, and Tim Couch. That was the group that hired Mark Stubes. They had more time, though. They went in an interview like five guys. I think he went interviewed like Sunny Dykes, that dude that ended up at Colorado. I can't remember his name. Lincoln Riley was one. There was like the special teams coordinator for the Dallas
Starting point is 00:15:22 Cowboys or something. There was like five guys. I don't think they have time to do that now. I'm just going to guess what I think the group would be. And this is a guess. Probably Mitch Barnhart. The guy that's in Dwayne Peevee's role is now Mark Hill. And then I think Barnhart likes to have a player kind of person. Remember he had Mike Pratt when he hired Cal. Yes. Right?
Starting point is 00:15:47 He had Tim Couch when he hired Stoops. It would make sense if it was Tammy. since Tammy's on that board. Wouldn't that make sense? Makes perfect sense. So I don't know if that's the group. Plus, Tammy is very much like Barnhart. You know, fellowship of Christian athlete.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Like, I could totally see Barnhart saying, Jacob, you want to come do this. Tammy just put out a long tweet about Stoops, too. What did it say? It's a lot to read. A lot of thinking of them, but it ends with recent seasons have been disappointing. The factors required to win at the highest level of college football
Starting point is 00:16:18 has shift dramatically for Kentucky football to take the next step. It's time for next chapter. let's go make it happen. Sounds like a guy that's involved. I was about saying, that sounds like a guy that had something to do with it ending. Yeah. I have, I mean, literally no basis for this.
Starting point is 00:16:33 This is not, but I just kind of feel like he was a part. I just, I kind of do. He's on that board. That's it. He's talking about let's go make it happen. He's making like official-esque statements and let's go make it happen. This guy who cares. I think now, maybe the person,
Starting point is 00:16:51 look at is what does Larry Vaught say about all this? Larry Vaught might be back with his views coming from Danville, Ryan. So if Mark Hill is involved in his search, does that make him... Well, I don't know that he is. I have no idea if he is. Okay, but you think being Barnhart's right-hand man, he probably...
Starting point is 00:17:09 Well, and that's the whole other thing about who's going to be the next AD. Yeah. And do you want to involve your next AD and try, I don't know. That's all remains to be seen. That's a lot of phone calls I'll be making this afternoon. Cornbread Hemp is having a Black Friday and Cyberma Monday sale. Buy one, get one free. The code is Bogo. Starting point is 00:18:04 We'll take a call right after this. KSA. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying. And nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where sports slice comes in.
Starting point is 00:18:16 I'm Timbo. Every episode we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs,

Starting point is 00:19:01 Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
Starting point is 00:19:17 that we don't realize that we are in, possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch life becomes about wins and losses Steve Burns Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid because that's two different intentions bro absolutely and that that's two different levels of trust I want you to just really be a good person join me Kear gains is we have real conversations about healing growth fatherhood pressure and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
Starting point is 00:20:11 He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office, Blue, 42. Hey, Wreck, Mom, I want you to weigh better. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Listen to the Cliverts show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never.
Starting point is 00:20:52 ever seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man. Hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers,
Starting point is 00:21:25 why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Izaa, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tegu Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Let's just get and see what people think. Let's go to Caden. Go ahead, Caden. Hey, Matt. I'm a student at the university, and over the recent years, It's been kind of sad to see over these past two seasons how students have turned on March.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Students definitely did turn on Mark. Yeah, it was insane. I go to games, and during the game, we'd be up 40 against Florida, and they would still be doggone. But I hope with the next guy that he either is the biggest win that we could possibly have for the program or the biggest bus out of the game. I hope that we can get our foot in a direction,
Starting point is 00:22:19 and I hope the best for the next coach. Yeah, it was. the students, the younger fans, appreciate the call, definitely turned on Stoops. I think it goes back to the Cal Stoops fight. A lot of younger fans were on cow's side there.
Starting point is 00:22:35 And then also like he just Stoops didn't do anything to cultivate students really at all. And you, I think that I mean, it doesn't matter, it matters a little bit. Doesn't matter a ton, but it matters. I think by the way, uh,
Starting point is 00:22:48 uh, sources tell Matthew Jones that they're talking to Will Stein today. Maybe talking to other people, but that they're talking to Will Stein today. Another Will Stein angle, there are several pictures of him and Rich Brooks together up at Oregon. It's clear they like each other.
Starting point is 00:23:05 And, you know, Pat Paul's still beloved here. One phone call could go a long way for him since he knows Stahn. I mean, don't make so much about that. Like, he might be talking to five people today. Yeah. But I only might source to the extent that have it is about Will Stein. Maybe even talking like right now. I think it does matter that he's off this week.
Starting point is 00:23:23 where Ohio State's got a championship game to play for. Cali Perry became the coach maybe over Izzo because Izzo still had to play that week. If Ohio State makes this run in the playoffs, they're playing all the way until what, second week of January. Which maybe they think about. But then Oregon can make the same run, you know? Maybe. They got a shot. Got a shot.
Starting point is 00:23:43 And that one game they lost this year was Indiana. Yeah. So Clay, go ahead, Clay. 22. I'm a fan of Stoops. I just don't see replacing him to his previous success. I just don't see somebody following with the eight straight bowl games. Well, maybe they don't.
Starting point is 00:24:12 But, I mean, he's gone now. He's gone now. So now what? I know. Well, I had to buy somebody breakfast this morning because I made a bet last night over. I didn't think they'd fire him. Well, a lot of people didn't. Nick Rouse didn't think they would at 5 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Adam, Justin Rowland, and Nick Rouse did YouTube, and Nick said he didn't think they would. And the other three said yes, but I mean, it wasn't for sure. I mean, I like the heart line for sure. I mean, I just can't get on board with Dan Mullen. Yeah, I don't think, I don't think he's the best choice at all. And I appreciate the call. You're not the only person.
Starting point is 00:24:56 That would be a good call. Yeah, I think he'd be a bad one. I appreciate the call. I don't think people want Demo. I think people would be disappointed. I'm just saying I don't think he would be an abject disaster. But he's definitely drew behind these other guys for me. Yeah, he's won at SEC in the SEC at a program that's usually at the bottom.
Starting point is 00:25:14 I do not want Chip Kelly. I keep seeing like... Bronze brother? I like Justin Rowland. But he mentioned Chip Kelly. What worries me about the Chip Kelly thing is Justin has some sources and I, you know, I hope that's not. I mean, Chip Kelly's another one.
Starting point is 00:25:31 We're hiring where we're like buying Yahoo. He jumps around jobs like he's running from the law. Like, he's everywhere like two or three years. He just got fired from the Raiders. Like, I don't want that. That's one. Like, I'll damn Mullen. I eventually could talk myself into, I don't know who can talk myself into Chip Kelly.
Starting point is 00:25:46 There's a lot of whispers out there that both Stein and Hartline are interested. So if it gets past them, I think, K dropped the ball. I don't care which one. Flip a coin. They got to get one of those two guys, I think, for the fan base to get back on board, be excited again. Sean from Austin. Go ahead, Sean. Yeah, I turned you guys on this morning. I heard the news is like the clouds parted and the sun was shining. Did you not know? Did you not know? Did you not know? Until you turned it on. No, I didn't know so I turned you guys on this morning.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Wow. That's crazy. I should have thought of that. But go ahead. Yeah, going, look, going forward, this guy's got to be a NIL and transfer portal savant. Okay, that's, I mean, we're not going backwards in time anymore. So that's all I got to say. I trust your guys' judgment. I love your guys' show. Go cats. Appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Wow. I should have, you know, I thought about maybe I should lead like it's news. And Shannon, I thought, well, of course everybody knows. Oh, yeah. I mean, it's been out for. But he didn't know. It happened late last night. Sometimes you guys go to bed.
Starting point is 00:26:50 Yeah. Maybe they don't get the news there. It's like Ryan. Ryan doesn't know until he turns on the pre-show. I heard on the pre-show this morning. Didn't know who the president of the United States was until he heard it from us. I did enjoy you guys A little live stream last night That was good
Starting point is 00:27:03 You had a good good There we did two of them Yeah One last night was good I looked up this morning Both of them over 40,000 views My goodness really It's crazy
Starting point is 00:27:13 The live stream was fun But that just felt like an old school KSR day I probably hit refresh 10,000 times We're on the board talking You don't You don't love
Starting point is 00:27:20 That you're in these circumstances But I had fun following it And just bantering with people online Yeah we didn't That wasn't very much An old school being online We didn't do cut tape cover zero because we didn't have time.
Starting point is 00:27:31 I expected to do nothing yesterday. I was going to read the end of three books and I read none, but it was still fun. It was fun. I enjoyed it. Mike, go ahead, Mike. Hey, guys. I hope everybody is just as excited as I am. All right.
Starting point is 00:27:47 I'm in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I've called in a couple times. But anyway, the reason I'm calling is that I really, I believe that heartline would be the guy that could come in and bring some excitement that could bring back some mystique to the university. He's young enough to come in. But this is a thing is that I really want to see a coach that can come in and build a team and a culture around him of, you know, good defense, good offense, special teams, all that because it ain't just about that head coach. It's about who he puts around him that's going to help him be successful.
Starting point is 00:28:26 So I think that that's what we really need to be looking at when we're hiring someone. Who can build a team? I agree. But lots of guys, the key to building a team, I appreciate calling. If I was doing the interviews, as I would want to know what people if they know their weaknesses and do you fill them with other people? Like I had somebody write me and say,
Starting point is 00:28:44 these guys are too young, Stein and Hartland. They're in their mid-30s. Well, it's a new world. People in their mid-30s might know more of what to do in the new world. Yeah. I think the problem in the world is we've got too many old people trying to run everything. Maybe move it to the new generation.
Starting point is 00:29:00 Right? Sometimes people, I mean, if you think about it, the people in the world who make the biggest change are usually pretty young. Right? They're usually the ones that, like, see the new mold. So I'm good with that. We'll take a break. Be right back.
Starting point is 00:29:17 KS.R. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tiki Sports Radio. This comment comes in on the techie.
Starting point is 00:29:30 By the way, there's a bunch of people that said they didn't know until the show started. My gut's sad to like talk about it is new, Shannon. Yeah. And I should have. Okay. You need breaking news then? So everybody that's tuning in right now. Okay, let's do it.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Breaking news. Oh, no. Mark Stoops has been let go by the University of Kentucky. Wow. And the cats will have a new football coach. There was. Did they really? Did they really?
Starting point is 00:30:00 Good job, right. That was nice. One person says, Matt, talking about Signetti, why don't we mention Bob Chesney of James Madison? Could bring 15 proven guys immediately. It's exactly what's happened at these other schools like Indiana and Vandy. I wouldn't be against it, but at the same time, like, here, let's put it like this.
Starting point is 00:30:22 This is what I would say. Going into this hiring season, if you would have asked the average person in college football, give me 10 hot names for big time jobs at the end of the season. Three names would have been on that list. John Summerall, Will Stein, and Brian Hartline, that have connections to Kentucky. Right.
Starting point is 00:30:46 When's that ever going to happen again? May never, ever. All right, so Summerall ends up at Florida. It's a whole different conversation about whether or not that could have been here. I'm skeptical he wouldn't. I feel like Florida is just a better job. You have to take it. Maybe I'm wrong.
Starting point is 00:31:02 That's just what I feel. But if you can get one of those three guys, will we ever have three dudes with connections to the University of Kentucky on the top 10 list again? When Steve's got the job, all everybody was considered had zero connections to Kentucky. So now that we got to get one of them. Right? Like, this is our chance.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Plus they just have a connection here. They know this place. Will Stein knows the state of Kentucky. Brian Hartline knows the program. Like, we just got it we got this do one of them it's right there for us it's right there for you and think about how much it would kill us if those three guys all end up being successes and we didn't get one of them when we had a chance that would be a massive failure you still have two left i think it'll
Starting point is 00:31:45 be a massive failure if you don't get one you can only get one so if we get one of the others we had no one of the three you're good just get one of them and you're playing a lottery maybe you win it maybe you don't but it would hurt it's like when chris lofton went to tennessee it would heard a lot more, Ryan, if they were there and you didn't try one of them. Absolutely. So why don't you go after both of them? Does it matter which one you get, as long as you just get one of the two? I just, honestly, if I was Mitch, I might just, I'd interview them both.
Starting point is 00:32:13 First one to jump. First one, well, first one I liked, whichever one of the two I thought was better than I'd offer. But if they both were equal, I'd just flip a coin and say. First one to come. First one jump. Okay, stop. Floyd. Lord.
Starting point is 00:32:29 heads or tails. Because I just feel like it's meant to be if they're both connected to here. Yeah. Right? And even though they're kind of different styles, there's got to be no more than a year or two apart in age.
Starting point is 00:32:42 And they're both coordinators at two huge brands in college football who behind the scenes have it figured out. I mean, both of those are like professional operations. And you could be bringing their second in command pretty much to come run your program. I don't think we could be upset if you took someone that Oregon loves or that Ohio State loves.
Starting point is 00:33:00 And don't overthink it. Interview them both. Let's just say it's Mitch Barnhart, Mark Hill, and Jacob Tanami. The three of you sit there and do like Myron and I do on King of the Mountain. Two out of three, and that's who we're taking. Right? So somebody should be staking out the airport to get into a flight? Well, I mean, Brian Hartland could drive or we could drive up there.
Starting point is 00:33:25 Now, Will Stein probably, but, you know, he's been here. He doesn't need to look at the campus. Do we fly up there to talk to him? We got Zoom. I mean, like, he's, like, he's been, they've both been here a lot. Like, what do they even really need to see? Probably need none of them. Hartline honestly probably knows the team in roster better than Mitch Barnhart from talking to his brother.
Starting point is 00:33:46 No, I'm not, that's not a shot of Mitch Barthard. Literally, Mike has been on the staff with Cutter Bowie all season. He knows everything there is to know to tell his brother. Luke, go ahead, Luke. Hey, guys. just wanted to say, definitely thankful for what Stoops did over the years, but I am very ready for a new coach. I love Brown Hartline. I know high school recruiting isn't as important, but to me, if you can steal a guy from Ohio State and from your backyard, you got to kind of do it.
Starting point is 00:34:13 I still love Will Stein, too. I think he's good. To me, Dan Mullen is fifth on the list. I'd rather have the James Madison guy or Jared Parker at Troy that nobody's talking about, because he would absolutely say yes to the Kentucky job, no matter what. He's a head coach. he's playing in the championship game in the Sunbelt. He is a good coach. I think he would do well here as well. But, you know, I'm just glad that Justin Rowland doesn't make the hiring decisions because if Chip Kelly or Brian Kelly were the coaches,
Starting point is 00:34:39 that's like having a clogged toilet and taking a crap on top of it expecting to fix it. I mean, we need a plumber to come in here, plunge out the toilet, inject some life and some offense into this fan base. And I got to say either Will Stein or Brian Hart. line. Those are Grand Slam hires. The James Madison coach or Jared Parker are home runs and Dan Bollins a double. Thanks guys.
Starting point is 00:35:04 Appreciate it. I like, I think that's a great call all the way right? Call the day right there. Adam Luckett, by the way, mentioned the Troy guy as a possibility. John, go ahead, John. I saw that Bobby Vitrino has reached out. Stop, stop. I don't want to hear it. Stop it. Stop it.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Don't even speak that into existence. other thing I saw that the private plane tracking seasons upon us boys craft flame apparently has landed in Columbus Ohio yeah they wouldn't fly to Columbus they'd drive there
Starting point is 00:35:36 I appreciate to call they wouldn't I mean maybe I don't know I don't think they dropped to Glasgow Kentucky so maybe they would fly to Columbus maybe so but I don't think it would be necessary for them to in person with
Starting point is 00:35:48 but I would suspect just suspect I would suspect they'll talk to both those guys and they should. Today. Yeah. I'm not as much like y'all that it has to be. Look, here's the deal. Signing day is Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:36:00 Right now, the administrative staff needs to be talking to these high school recruits and saying, are you good with us? But once you get to Wednesday, I'm not sure if there's a huge difference between, say, Wednesday and Friday or Saturday. Like, if you're not going to do it today, then I don't know that tomorrow makes it big. I'm thinking about current player. Me too. Hunter Bowley's phone is ringing.
Starting point is 00:36:21 Willie Rodriguez's phone is ringing. doesn't open until January 2nd. So like, you do have a little bit of time. They are ringing, but they're going to wait and see who the coach is. I mean, Cutter Bowley and Willie Rodriguez are not going to pick another school today. That's like you said, I think it matters that Ohio State is playing this weekend. Oregon is not. So I don't think it has to.
Starting point is 00:36:42 I disagree with Ryan. It needs to be tomorrow. But it does need to be this week, probably. How long did it take for Pope to be hired after CalPari left? What, four days? Calgary left on a Tuesday. we announced Pope on Friday. Friday, yeah, three days.
Starting point is 00:36:57 Is that correct? It came out Thursday night. It came out Thursday night. Yeah, at about 1030 or 11 like we did last night. Yeah, and then we did the show Friday morning. But then Scott Drew came. Well, Cala Perry, we thought was gone from like Saturday on. It got officially announced.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Well, no. We, because we weren't firing him. Arkansas announced him on Tuesday. The famous him walking the day. The famous him walking the day. dog was on Monday. Yeah, it leaked Sunday because I went to the Masters and I just pulled into Augusta and looked at my phone. I'm like, oh, great. I just got here. That was Sunday afternoonish that week. But it was quick. Yeah. Or did it go, did it go two days or a week and a half?
Starting point is 00:37:36 Well, because the Drew family definitely flew here. They were here for a whole day. When did that happened? I'm kind of wondering if it was a week and a half. Maybe it was a week and a half because, yeah, it was a week and a half because they did the whole Drew family. Then they went up to see Danny Hurley. I think it was a week and a half. I don't think it was two days. I think it was, he left on a Tuesday and we hired Pope the next Friday.
Starting point is 00:38:01 Because I know, I mean, they went through the oats and pearls. Yeah, it was more than two. No, wait. Pope was introduced Masters Sunday. I remember, because I'm like, I could be watching the message. You just said the Master Sunday was when you found out Cal was there. No, I got there the week of the Masters on a Sunday when Cal left. Remember, I was, the day Cal left, I didn't have a phone. I was at the Masters practice.
Starting point is 00:38:17 You think it was only two days? Positive. Well, listen, there's an answer to this question. Pope's press conference was Master Sunday for sure. Okay. Hunter. Hunter and Austin. Go ahead, Hunter. No, he left Final Four weekend. Remember? Because they talked about it at the Final Four, because they met at the Final Four and talked about it.
Starting point is 00:38:37 So it was Tuesday. So you're right. I guess it was two or three days. It felt like, it felt like a month. But go ahead, Hunter. Hey, guys. I'm going to follow what everyone else says. I'm fine with either of those two guys are the top candidates. And I love Stoops, but outside of the two levice years, we've had a fairly, I was a boring team to watch it, even when they were winning, which was fun, but the offense was not the most fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:39:02 So I'm excited to get a guy who can come in here and make the offense really exciting. I agree with you. Do you think that? I appreciate the call. Do you think that should be part of the conversation? You have to be bringing in a big time, fun offense. I don't know if it's a deal breaker,
Starting point is 00:39:17 but it needs to take priority. I mean, we all embrace Stoops' mentality. it worked for many years. I had just as much as fun as anyone running the ball and having other teams be like, wow, we just got our butt kicked by that offensive line. But I think it is time to try something a little new and bring some excitement.
Starting point is 00:39:32 I mean, when Halmomi was losing 51 to 45, that was still pretty fun. I'd rather win those games, but having a fun offense goes a long way. I'm done with the bubble screen. We had a lot of those Saturday, too. The Bush bubble screen. I'm done with the bubble screen.
Starting point is 00:39:46 Yeah, it was Tuesday. It was Tuesday. It was Tuesday. The decision was Friday, so three days. Wow. If you have an outdated kitchen or bath, an unfinished basement, well, they're not going to fix themselves. A lot of people think it'll just wait. I'll wait until January to start my remodel.

Starting point is 00:42:27 the Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me,
Starting point is 00:42:37 he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Look. quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better. What?
Starting point is 00:42:51 Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
Starting point is 00:43:12 And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player. ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think
Starting point is 00:43:28 Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when I T's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:43:43 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:44:07 By the way, Lane Kiffin will make a million dollars if Ole Miss wins the national title without him. What? That is right. That's a great deal. What? Yeah. Kiffin's going to have $13 million that puts him on par with Kirby Smart, but they're keeping the parts of the Old Miss contract where he got bonuses. Kiffin just is a dog.
Starting point is 00:44:25 Like, that's just how it is. We're all Ole Miss fans over the playoffs now, aren't we? I am, I'm pulling for him now. Kiffin is. Why would he not be? Yeah, Giffin definitely is. You are an Ole Miss fan? I'm pulling for him right now.
Starting point is 00:44:40 Absolutely. They kind of get in the, those kids are getting the shaft a little bit, so I'm pulling for them. Yeah. 859-2-80-202. to 87. Let's just keep going. Let's go to, oh, no, Jay Rock. What's up, Jay Rock? Hey, what's up, y'all? I just want to know why it's so hard for people to follow your instructions when you call in. You don't talk about the future until you talk about the future. But, yeah, since we talk about the future for y'all, I feel like that's, I feel like that's
Starting point is 00:45:05 fairly obvious. Pretty simple. I mean, that's where I get my material from these dummies. But anyhow, uh, Guy Morris and Rich Brooks and Joker and And scoops, what we want to talk about them. I holl. See, that's why you can't go to him in a serious day. We definitely need to go to him on a serious day. By the way, we play Carolina tomorrow. Just reminder.
Starting point is 00:45:30 We need to win real bad. I know Mario's worried. I was on the elevator with him. It's all I talked about was Caleb Wilson. But we're going to get it done. Who's going to guard Caleb Wilson? Me. Steve, what's up, Steve?
Starting point is 00:45:41 Gentlemen, good morning. Just real fast. I think whatever coach we go with, I think it needs to be assumed that we're looking at maybe a three to six year window. No more 10 year, 12 year, 13 year coaching. Why not 10, though? I mean, why not 10? Like, I think 10 can work.
Starting point is 00:45:57 I mean, I'm sure Indiana thinks they're going to have Kurt Signetti for 10 years. Well, he's not going to be there. That guy will retire soon. But someone's talking like Stein, hey, he could be a long-term fit, long-term hire. Well, he may get hired away. Let's be candid. And that's not a bad thing. If we're good enough to have Stein hire a lot of that.
Starting point is 00:46:16 I agree with you. I totally agree with you. But I would say this is a world where maybe you can keep these guys. I mean, Penn State tried to hire Cignetti. Look at the SEC. Matt, you know, Stuze by a mile was the longest tenure coach. There's always going to be turnover. We need to be focused on winning.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Well, I don't know why you're worried about when we're going to fire somebody when we haven't even hired them yet. Oh, I'm not talking about being fired. I'm talking about them getting hired away. But why are you worried about that? We're talking about hiring young guys. I'm not. I think it's a great thing.
Starting point is 00:46:48 You're misinterpreting. I think we need to be thinking of bringing in somebody that is going to want to have others try to coach him from us. And I think that window is a three to six, maybe seven-year window if we do this right. I appreciate the call. I'm just not going to grant you that they're going to be poached. Whereas I would have granted you that five years ago. You know, multiple, Clark Lee is staying at Vandy. Right?
Starting point is 00:47:15 And he got approached by lots of schools. He is staying at Vandy. You know, Kurt Signetti turned down Penn State to stay at Indiana. I don't know. I think you can keep these guys. Now, maybe you can't keep them from Ohio State. And maybe you can't keep them from Alabama. But I think you can keep them now from all but a handful.
Starting point is 00:47:36 I'd say it's a good thing. If these big schools are coming after our football coach, that means he's had great success here. Yes, but I just, why are we great? granting we'll lose people. No, these other schools aren't. Times have changed. Times have changed.
Starting point is 00:47:51 Lane Kiffin's a little different, but he's laying Kiffin. They put his clothes out on the street, Shannon. I know, right? That's the best thing in the weekend. That was a lot of money he got to. I mean, they left his clothes. At least they didn't set him on fire. I mean, like a real divorce.
Starting point is 00:48:08 Somebody cheating on you, you know. Is Marty Smith still there? Poor guy. You know, they had him down there the whole time. I didn't really ever see him Sunday, except he was at the airport, I guess, saying goodbye. Draft Kings, we got to quickly do a draft Kings parlay. Go to draft kings.com. Use my promo code KSR, bet three win $200 if your bet hits.
Starting point is 00:48:26 What is Monday night football today? Oh, we got a Giants and Patriots. Giants and the Patriots. What's the spread? I don't know, but I'm going to guess. Giants and a half. It's not even on here. Do they not know who's going to play or why?
Starting point is 00:48:41 There's no line. I'm not seeing a line either Oh, it is, seven and a half. Look at that. I should do an NFL podcast. Myrives by seven and a half. What do you got? I'm taking the Giants to cover that.
Starting point is 00:48:52 Jackson Dart's supposed to play tonight for the Patriots. Giants cover it. That may be why they didn't have a line on this. I don't know if he's playing you. Well, I, you know, offer you guys opinion. You're the NFL experts. I offer you guys opinion. Just pick the team.
Starting point is 00:49:07 I'm going to say Giants cover. I offer you guys opinion. That's not even a sentence. All right, Giants, go ahead. I'm going to go with the Giants, too. Okay, there's three. Also, big night for Chris Rodriguez last night. They lost, but he got to start.
Starting point is 00:49:20 And Ray Davis had his best game of the year last night. Let's get a clean sweep. I'll take the Giants too. All right. We all bet the Giants tonight. Let's go. Eddie, offer you guys opinion. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:49:31 Yes, sir. I know times a factor, and we need to really make sure we get a good coach, so it's a one-time deal. But I had another question moving forward. If Mitch Lee's, what do you think about Rick Petiton's? know as athletic director. I think that's the worst idea I've heard today.
Starting point is 00:49:46 Justin, go ahead, Justin. Hey, Matt. Kurt Signetti has been the bells of all this offseason for how well he's done at Indiana. Of course, nobody could get him now because he has signed a contract extension. I just thought, well, I wonder why nobody mentions his coordinators, like Mike Shanahan, his offensive coordinator, and Bryant, Rains, his defensive coordinator. Both are like, he's a top 10 defense, top 10 offense. I mean, Indiana is putting up like
Starting point is 00:50:17 60 points every week. It's a good point, quick question. I mean, I got nothing against that. I don't know much about him, but yeah. Yeah. I just get a little worried that we kind of are getting a little bit tunnel vision here with Stein and Heartline. I understand are both good, both are good options, but I feel like we need to kind of like. But what is it about what does Shanahan have that Stein and Heartline don't have. Everything they've done, everything he's done, so have they. It's the signity connection for me. Yeah, but Ryan Day won the national championship last year. But Ryan Day won the national championship last year.
Starting point is 00:50:54 So, I mean, you know, Dan Lannan's been great. I like that. But I just thought those guys should be mentioned. No, I appreciate the call. I think that's fair. And if they end up getting one of those guys, maybe I'll be fine with it. But got a lot of good choices. I heard people say, well, you waited too long.
Starting point is 00:51:10 I think it's actually interesting. I think we waited more than these other people, but I think our candidates, I don't think any of these guys that went to other schools where people we were going to look at except Summerall, right? Yeah, I think we dropped the ball on that, but you still have an opportunity here. You still have an opportunity.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Like, it's like, okay, maybe you, maybe you didn't get to pick between five great candidates, but you got to pick between four. All you needs one. Auburn's already hired their guy. What, Arkansas's already hired their guy? But we weren't looking for those guys. We weren't going to hire Pete Golding or the Memphis coach or the North Tech.
Starting point is 00:51:45 Like, we weren't hiring those guys. So, here we go. And we're lucky they're here. I wouldn't have much faith if we didn't have the two with connections right now. But we're going to get one of them. We better. And it's going to be fun. And I think they may be talking to both of them today because there is a private net jet going from Lexington to Columbus.
Starting point is 00:52:07 Let's go out to the airport. Steak it out. Net Jets. We'll see you tomorrow. KSR. It's a rental. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy,
