It is Kentucky Sports Radio Friday.
December the 5th.
I'm Matt Jones on a cold day in Glasgow, Kentucky at Ashley Furniture Outlet.
Ashley Furniture has no interest until December 2030 on all premium mattresses.
All KSR fans get a free $25 master card for taking a test rest today in Ashley's Mattress Gallery.
Come in here and take a nap and get paid for it.
How about that?
You talk about the best job in the world.
Take a nap, get $25.
I don't know how you could do that.
We are here.
This has got to be the most comfortable our audience has ever been.
They are all on couches and beds.
Look, these two guys right here sharing a seat.
That's how good things are in Glasgow.
That's a love seat.
That is a love seat.
I love it.
You can give us a shout of Clark's puppet shop phone line, 859-2802287.
A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-7474-2524.
This is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office.
If you call T.J., he'll make them pay.
Got a great crowd.
You know, I've spent a lot of time over the years in Glasgow, one of my favorite places in Kentucky.
A lot of friends here.
We've got Judge Gabe over there.
Kent Bull, who hits the golf ball farther than any person that I know.
We've got Mee Ma'all here.
All kinds of good folks and glad to be here today.
What a great idea.
Get $25 to take a nap.
I mean, come on, sign me up for that.
I'm not sure there's ever been a job that's more yours.
That is perfect for me.
Yes, that's exactly right.
A test rest?
That's a brilliant idea.
I knew that was going to get him excited.
I'm surprised he's here doing the show with us with all these mattresses laying around right behind us.
Yeah.
Suzanne is here.
Nice to see you in the gear.
So everybody's here, Shannon.
We've got all kinds of stuff going.
We got Christmas cards, we got cookies, and we got couches.
What else do you need?
So if you're in the Glasgow area, come on out.
I was almost late because they, what's the road they've shut down out there?
Highway 90.
You know, give yourself time.
I sat for about 15 minutes, did not think I was going to make it, but got here just in time.
So there's a lot of stuff to get to.
This is a big day, big weekend for UK sports, including a game in Nashville,
volleyball, et cetera.
but I actually think the biggest news has nothing to do with UK sports.
So I'm going to step to the side and let my co-host Drew Franklin speak here for a second.
Okay, yeah, a little Wani-N-N-A-N-A here.
Let's have.
We've got some breaking news.
Let's go breaking news, Rick.
All right.
All right.
My wife Abby is here.
We are on our way to Nashville, and we want to share with everyone that we are expecting a baby girl coming up in April.
Yeah.
Ready for my Girl Dad era.
I will take any tips that you guys, fellas, have out there that have girls.
All right, should I give you some?
Yeah, please.
We've been sitting on this secret for a while, but heading to Nashville,
I think it's going to be hard to keep that secret any longer.
So we're going to let it out and let everybody know, and we're very excited.
Do Master's Sunday, baby girl.
After 20 years of, well, after 15 years of Kentucky Sports Radio on the radio,
So this is the first KSR child, Ryan Lemon, coming and very excited for Drew.
He told us a while back, but the announcement public today, and we're proud of him.
I almost feel like a proud uncle.
I texted or tweeted on his, or I'm going to get it right.
Put a comment on Instagram where I said, have a nice baby because that's all I know how to say.
We got a good laugh out of that.
So I appreciate that.
So, Ryan, I know you're happy too.
Super excited for Drew and Abby.
I mean, this is awesome.
We all become uncles, you know.
We're all going to take ownership in this little girl.
Ryan is a good name for a girl as well as a boy.
Don't do that. Don't do that.
Ryan Franklin has a nice ring to it.
I'm just saying Shannon could go either way too.
That's true.
We just call it KS Baby for right now.
Is it okay?
Yeah.
Might be wearing her at remotes?
And you will always have the memory of you announced it to the world at the Ashley
Furniture outlet in Glasgow.
I couldn't think of a more special place.
Glasgow, we have a lot of good friends here.
We like furniture.
Maybe we'll go with the name, Ashley.
Who knows?
There we go.
Just kidding.
That would be perfect timing.
And I all.
What kind of rockers you all got in here?
Already.
Yes, by the way, Ashley Furcher in Glasgow and Somerset, Drew, I'm very proud of you and excited.
When is it due?
Master's Sunday.
If you handed me the calendar and said pick a date, that's probably the one I would have circled.
Did you plan that?
Did it?
I mean, it's right after we win number nine.
I'll have a week to get back from Indianapolis.
Just sit and watch golf all weekend.
Yeah, you're not allowed to have it the weekend before.
So you're going to have to make sure it is that weekend.
Well, you all will make great babysitters.
I'm really looking forward to her first road trip will be next year, wherever we're going.
I'm just, she'll be tagging along.
I feel like I would be a great babysitter.
Well, it is exciting.
So that's part of a big day of news.
Let's go through just a little catch-up for people who haven't, who haven't followed it.
All right.
So the good news.
UK volleyball won its first round of the end.
NCAA tournament. You can clap for that.
Absolutely.
As they beat Wofford last night in a fairly easy match.
They will play tonight at 7 o'clock against UCLA.
So that game will be, I think it might even be on regular television,
but it will certainly be on the computer.
But UK will play UCLA.
Now, the game technically starts at 7,
but actually will start 30 minutes after whatever the game was before.
So it could be as early as 630, they said.
So, but either way, it is tonight, and we will have it at the bar along with the basketball game,
but the UK volleyball team wins their first game.
Tonight, they're a favorite, but this is a game they could lose if they don't play well.
UCLA has been very good in years past, so that's tonight.
The basketball team, of course, is on their way.
They play Gonzaga, 7 o'clock tonight in Nashville in a game that's nerve-wracking, to say the least.
hopefully we get it done.
We need it.
And then the football, there's a lot of news.
UK has basically announced, well, they haven't announced officially,
but we know their offensive coordinator is going to be a guy named Joe Sloan.
They are going to steal Louisville's head recruiting coordinator.
The head recruiting coordinator for Louisville football, Pete Nocta,
is coming to Kentucky to be the head recruiting coordinator at Kentucky football
in what I think is a very surprising move.
and there are some recruits that Kentucky may be getting at the last minute that they could pull today.
All that is news.
Which of those, Drew, do you think, is the most important?
I'm kind of going to leave with Pete Nocta.
Okay.
So let's talk about it, then.
And a little more Louisville influence to the staff?
So for people who don't know, Pete Nocta is the guy who basically is in charge of Louisville recruiting.
Vince is kind of a head recruiter in terms of Kentucky and Ohio.
but Pete Nocta is essentially Louisville's, for lack of a better term, GM.
It's the head of recruiting.
Now, we have a GM, but he's going to be the head of recruiting at Kentucky.
I would admit, I don't know a lot about who he got, who his players are.
I don't really know about his ability to recruit.
I do know this.
People at Louisville love him.
I mean loving, especially the people that are kind of engaged with the program.
They've talked about him.
One of them tweeted out yesterday.
he can go anywhere he wants.
He better not go to Kentucky, and then he went to Kentucky.
I don't know what impact it will have, but I do also say, you know what?
They take Vince.
We'll take this guy.
Ryan, what do you think?
I can talk a lot about Pete Knoxville.
I've known him since he was like five years old.
His dad is a long – I don't know that.
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah, his dad is a longtime high school football coach in Lexington.
Pete grew up running the sidelines was a ball boy at his dad's games.
We were covering the games.
at Bryan Station, a super, super guy.
Had a real bad health scare several years ago, and he's conquered that.
But you're right, people love him.
And that's why they've done well in recruiting because he's just that guy you like.
What did you think when you heard he was coming?
I was super excited.
I kind of came out of nowhere for me.
But like I said, I've been a Pete Knox fan for a long time.
He and I text.
We even text once in a while.
Oh, you text?
Yeah.
Hang on, is Scoop back?
Yeah.
Scoop about to scoop something for us.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
See, I didn't even know you had that connection.
Continuing this theme, though, Shannon, of guys from Kentucky with Kentucky connections.
I mean, this is going to be a football staff.
I mean, Justin Burke is from Kentucky.
Will Stein, Pete Nocta.
I mean, they are assembling a crew of people who grew up in this state and were Kentucky fans growing up.
I love that.
Let's keep the guys here home.
And I think you're right.
You know, they got vets.
Now, we took two of theirs.
We'll get two for one.
Every one that you take from us, we'll take two of yours.
I don't know, Pete, like Ryan does.
but a lot of my friends grew up with him,
and they've talked highly of him since I was hating on Louisville 10 years ago.
Also, he's been there forever.
He's gone through multiple coaches, and they've kept him around to show how much he means.
But even though I don't know him personally, I mean, as you all have said,
everyone loves the guy and speaks highly of him.
Now, I do think it's interesting.
Vince Mero tweeted out yesterday.
I initially thought it was in response to our Will Stein interview
because Shannon Will Stein said something to the effect of,
we're going to own the state of Kentucky and then go into Ohio.
And then Vince was like, good luck getting Kentucky in Ohio.
That's us or whatever.
But now I kind of wonder if maybe he was learning the Pete Nocta news, too.
I'm not sure.
He was a salty big dog yesterday on Twitter.
Yeah, I want to see some of this back and forth.
You know, Vince Merrill tweeting during games was sort of a boss move.
But I think that we've got a good rivalry going on between Will Stein and now Vince Merrill over at Louisville.
They also end up taking an offensive coordinator named Joe Sloan.
He comes from, where's he come from, East Carolina?
He was just at LSU.
He was at LSU.
When he was at LSU, he did coach Jaden Daniels, who ended up in the NFL and obviously
had a great year.
He was part of this year's team that did not do very well.
It's interesting.
Will Stein says he will not call plays, meaning Will Stein, this guy will.
But I'm sure he'll have impact on it.
What do you think about that higher?
I love the hire.
That is the most interesting thing for me.
Will Stein's been this creative play caller.
That's how he made a name for himself at Oregon.
And he's going to hand it over to this guy, Joe Sloan.
So he must truly trust this guy to hand over all those play calling abilities that he's been so successful at.
I'm sure I'll have a role in it.
A dude who's such, I can't imagine he just says, yeah, I mean, I'm not going to give my opinion.
I don't think it will be like that.
Yeah, and he kind of said as much.
He said, I'm not going to be in the headset, you know, having the conversation,
send it in the plays.
but I will have a big say in what is actually being called,
even though he's not actually calling it.
All right, this is I show him something.
8-9-280-2287.
All of this, though, I mean, ultimately we will find out, Shannon, on the field,
what will end up happening.
But all of this is kind of just trying to gather momentum, right?
I mean, this is ultimately injecting excitement, bringing in these names.
I mean, there's some talk.
I don't know if they're going to get this kid from Louisiana, this receiver today,
but he was an LSU commitment, I think, for Joe Sloan when he was there,
that kid might end up flipping to us.
That would be one of the bigger receiver commits we've gotten in years.
I think it's all just about kind of re-energizing the football.
Absolutely.
A lot of excitement right now.
You know, we talked about Mark Pope when he came here.
He won the press conference.
I felt the same way about Will Stein just a couple of days ago at his press conference as well.
So, you know, bringing in a guy who the last couple of years at LSU averaged 400 yards of offense every game.
I mean, you look at the numbers.
That's something to get excited about.
Now, you guys are not, like, in the thick of UK Louisville, but there are Louisville fans here in Glasgow,
because I've fought with them on your golf courses before.
There's one here.
Oh, you got one here.
Raise his hand.
Hey, well, you know, everybody's got their weaknesses.
But I do think, I mean, taking their former quarterback, two Trinity guys are the head coaches, they have vits.
We now have their recruiting director.
Ryan, I mean, in terms of on the football side, you know, two basketball coaches might be nice and like each other.
But you've got to think on the football side, this is the spiciest this rivalry's been in a while, wouldn't you think?
I think there's no doubt about it, especially now with Will Stein being a lot.
our coach. I mean, you know, Jeff Brom says some great things about Will Stein.
Will Stein said some great things about Jeff Brum.
But you know they're going to go at it, man, with these Trinity guys.
The Tritium Mafia finally gets to come invade our stadium for a change.
And I'm looking forward to how it plays out.
And more so on their end, they'll probably turn down the hatred just a little bit
because, you know, they love getting their shots off at UK, just like we fire back at them.
But they really love that guy.
So I don't think they're going to follow on too much.
I mean, if you ask Louisville fans, I was talking to a buddy of mine, actually,
my accountant yesterday, who's a huge Louisville fan, and he said Will Stein was his favorite player ever
at Lerick at Lulville, just because how much he loved the guy and how interesting he was, etc.
I mean, like, literally, we haven't just taken there.
We've taken, it would be the equivalent, I think what the equivalent is.
I mean, it would be, I don't want to make the exact analogy, because this guy was a lot better
than Will Stine was for Louisville.
But it would be like, Shannon, if Jared Lorenzen went and coached at Louisville or something,
People would go nuts.
I mean, I think there's a little bit of that.
The whole thing kind of feels like a fever dream.
I still can't get over the fact that Vince Merrill was at Louisville.
It just still feels weird, even this time that's passed.
But yeah, and then who would have thought that we would have had a former Louisville quarterback as our head coach?
But I love Vince Merrill, but we told him, Drew, if he went, what did he become from Big Dog to what?
To Little Dog.
To what?
That's just what it is, because you went to Louisville, and that's where we are right now.
Will mentioned this yesterday, but at the big press conference a couple days ago,
Stephen sent me a picture from the back, and I didn't know all the guys in the photo,
but apparently was some old Louisville receivers that were there wearing blue,
some actual people that played for Louisville, they didn't have the emblem,
but they were wearing blue shirts.
They're supporting Will Stein at the press conference.
You got to love it.
Weird seeing that.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm CJ Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball like,
After you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health.
These are real, honest conversations.
We don't always get to have out loud.
Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right?

Absolutely not.
During one meal, I'm standing.
I'm standing and handing my children food.

Welcome back.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio here in Glasgow and Ashley Furcher.
Sir, you have to clap.
You can't sit that close and not at least give a little bit applause.
Ashley Furture, Drew, not just a great furniture store.
Also the name of J.D. Vance's girlfriend.
It is a great place to be here.
Ashley, your furniture.
That was the joke.
Ashley Furniture.
I'm with you.
I expected more from you on that.
859-280-2287.
That was a dad joke.
It was a good joke.
772-7-4-5-25-4.
Let's talk just a second about basketball before we go to the phones.
Kentucky playing at against Gonzaga today.
This is a big game for me.
I mean, we need this one.
Got some good news yesterday.
that Jalen Lowe is going to be coming back at some point.
We don't know if he's coming back today, but he will come back.
For me, that is huge news, right?
Because, I mean, I don't mean to be pessimistic,
but I feel like if we didn't have Jail and Lowe,
I don't know if we're going to be good this year.
Now, I'm not certain we're going to be good with him,
but I know we're going to be better than we'd be otherwise.
Let's skip today for a second.
Do you agree with me that that's major news,
even though he could get hurt again,
that at least he's going to give it a try?
I think he is the answer for a lot of the offensive woes
that this team is having problems with.
Just being that point guard out there, that leader,
and that moves Aberdeen to his natural position off the ball a little bit.
I think a lot of problems can be solved with Jalen Lowe coming back.
Yeah, he'll get the offense moving.
I don't know if we'll see him tonight.
I hope we do because we know how desperate.
it's getting already this earlier in the season.
But I was someone when the news broke, in my brain, I didn't expect him.
I just didn't know what it.
I thought for him and his future, it might be better not to play.
So I'm thrilled that he's going through with it whenever we get to see him.
And the sooner the better because it won't solve all the team's problems,
but it'll get that offense moving because it's just completely been flat without him.
Huge news that he's going to give it a try.
You know, people like to question players' toughness.
I like that he's actually trying to come back.
And when he does, I think it's going to make the offense go.
because whatever lineup we had last game against North Carolina is not it.
The best this team has looked against the team all year that was decent
was about a 15-minute stretch with Jaylon Lowe in the second half.
And everybody, I know people remember the turnover at the end and missing the free throws,
but he took us from 24 points down to it was a one-possession game on the road.
And since then, our offense has yet to look good in one of these games.
I don't think our offense looked good one minute against Michigan State,
and I don't really think it looked good against North Carolina,
even though we had a chance to win the game.
So I think that's huge.
Now, on the other side, Mo Diabate has a high ankle spring.
They're saying that's usually a four to seven week injury.
He's been out two, so I think you've got to assume he does not play
until we maybe get to SEC play.
I think that's a tough injury for Kentucky, too.
I don't think it's debilitating, especially against the teams we're going to be playing.
It may hurt us against Gonzaga, but not so much maybe against Indiana and St. John's,
and then you get him back for SEC play.
But it is a bummer.
I mean, if you were Mark Pope and you start the season and you go, okay, who are the most talented guys on your roster?
There's a decent chance that Kentucky has been without, is now out without three of the four.
Sure.
Jalen Lom, Diabate, and Jaden Quentin.
At least he's going to get one back, but now you're losing another one.
Mark Popin injuries have just been a terrible combination the last couple years.
You're right.
Tonight's game is the reason Mark Pope went out and got Mohamed Diabate.
I mean, that E.K. dude and Huff, I mean, these are guys that destroyed us.
He needed a guy like Diabate.
They need him tonight.
They need that touchdown tonight.
This is the game they could really use him tonight.
I mean, Gonzaga's got that E.K.
like that's who we'd put on him like it's going to be tonight is a night we could really use him but
we're not going to happen yeah Gonzaga's got some size that's one of their strengths they have a lot
of streaks and really Kentucky just as a team lacks toughness and physicality and he's like the guy
he's the dog on the team with him not out there it just really shows just from their how they play
and their identity so do we have I mean are any of you going to the game tonight I mean we're
on your path you go on there's a handful of people so any chance
we win, Shannon?
I mean, there's always a chance, right?
What's the spread?
Three.
It moved quickly.
It's only three.
Yeah.
I was shocked.
It's already up to six and a half by now.
Oh, it is?
It was three when I looked at earlier.
I would have thought.
Okay.
I mean, honestly, I thought it was going to be like eight or nine.
Three.
Vegas likes us for some reason.
I put it out on Twitter when it came out, and all of my replies are Kentucky fans saying
they were betting on Gonzaga, which isn't exciting.
Yeah.
I mean, I don't know how he looks.
I don't know how he won the game last year.
Weren't we down like by 20 at halftime or something?
That's when Kirk Crea got hurt.
It seemed like it was falling apart.
E.K. was destroying us last year.
When that's with Amari Williams in there.
I don't know.
I just don't know.
He's going to be a problem again tonight.
He is.
He is going to be a problem again.
I feel like he's played against us for 10 years.
I mean, he had that huge game against us at Rupp Arena.
And he had a big game against us last year in Seattle.
I feel like we've been going against him for,
forever. He's going to be tough, but I mean, bigger picture.
So I really haven't gotten to talk a lot about the North Carolina game.
I was so disappointed in that game.
Like that's the game that has, you know, Michigan State is pretty good.
And Louisville's pretty good despite what happened in Arkansas.
But I don't think North Carolina is good.
And that game is at home.
And we look so discombobulated on offense.
And I mean, I want to, I hope it gets better.
I want to say it will, but I don't know, Drew.
We can't shoot.
We have like two guys that can beat people off the dribble.
Like what?
Can't rebound, no effort.
That was a big problem, too.
I mean, they got crushed on the boards.
But what, I mean, what is the thing to make me go, all right, this is going to get better besides
Jalen Lowe coming back?
I don't mean to be down there.
There's really nothing right now.
We just have to hope they flip a switch and.
figure it out in a hurry. I mean, they've only had a couple days to practice since then, but
it was equally disappointing that the defense was so good. Caleb Wilson is the star. Yelovich
actually defended him really well. He didn't even beat you. You beat yourselves by not being
able to score at all. Defensively, they held them to like 40%. We lost to North Carolina's
B players. We actually held Caleb Wilson. I would have dropped him a couple spots in the draft
based on how Yelovich guarded him. But then you got a guy, who was the guy that made the winning shot?
Dixon, a freshman?
He hadn't done anything.
He had the last five points in.
Yeah.
You got to take more than 13 threes, too.
That's all they took in that North Carolina.
Brandon Garrison needs to take more threes.
He's only got to hit one.
I mean, I don't know.
I want to take more than third.
If we're only going to make one,
did he fall to Trent Noah and let him do his thing.
Yeah, we'll see.
All right, we'll take a break, try to be a little happier.
We are here at Ashley Furniture, 859,000, 27.
This is KSaw.
Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio.
Kentucky, Kentucky, Gazaga, 7 o'clock tonight.
Pregame show will be at 430.
we'll have both games at the bar.
I hope you'll come and join us.
We had a football team there last night.
Raceland.
We're going to preview the high school games later with our high school expert here.
Some good ones, actually.
There's like three or four that could be real battles this weekend.
Yeah, the Raceland Rams came in last night.
They've been to the state finals like three of the last four years and still looking for their first title.
That game's at noon.
It's on prep spin.
That'll be a great game.
wrestling and LCA, that should be a battle.
They race in Kentucky Country Day.
Same thing.
LCA plays 2A against Owensboro Catholic.
I consider all those schools, Shannon, the same.
LCA, KDAA and a Christian Academy, you're essentially the same school.
One person on a text machine writes, Matt, this basketball team's play is a reflection of their dress.
They're sloppy.
Half their jerseys that are untucked and they wear different colored shoes.
Oh, no.
They look like a bunch of dudes in a picture.
pickup game rather than a blue blood college team.
I think most teams now are wearing different shoes.
I did notice they do go with their jerseys untucked a lot.
I mean, I don't like tucking things in, so I'm not going to criticize them,
but usually they don't let them do that.
And I did notice, Drew, actually, that we do go jersey untucked a lot.
The shoes, I don't think that's going to change, but I guess we could present ourselves
a little better with the tucked-in jerseys.
I don't know.
We want to be like the Yankees, though, and everybody's got to look the same, and you can't
have certain facial hair.
No, but I like the shoes.
I know times have changed.
But I will say, I don't, I don't, you know, I don't know, but Shannon, it does not
look to me like the team likes each other.
I'm hoping that, I mean, it just does it.
Like you just, little thing, except for when Walker Horn made that through it.
Everybody united over that.
I just haven't, I feel like there hasn't been a moment where it looks like these guys are,
are fans of spending time with each other.
Yeah, there's clearly some on,
court chemistry, as we've heard from, I think Travis Ford said that.
But if there is off-the-court chemistry issues, that's a bigger issue in its own.
That's a hard thing to overcome.
Yeah, it is.
You better have a, if you're going to be, we've had one team at Kentucky that I don't know
that they were the closest group in the world.
The group that had to go bowling together?
Was that the year?
No, I mean, I'm not going to say which one it was because they're always to go bowling.
Yeah, I don't want to say which one it was.
but there was a group that was a really good team.
But they didn't love each other.
But they had so much talent that it didn't really matter.
Like it didn't really matter because they had so much talent,
but they struggled a little bit through the year and then kind of came together.
Maybe that's what this group has.
We'll wait and see.
Who's up first?
Paul is up first.
Paul, go ahead, Paul.
Hey, thanks for taking my call first time on here.
But my question is,
Yeah, I'm excited about our football coach, but my question's about the offensive coordinator,
Joe Sloan from LSU.
LSU had a pretty bad year.
Their offense couldn't put up points.
Nussmeyer ended up losing the starting quarterback job.
So I'm curious how it's going to play out at Kentucky, where our offense seems to have a history of going east and west when we should be going north and south.
What are your thoughts on the offensive coordinator hire?
Well, I mean, what I would say is the year before, two years before, they had a really good offense.
So, you know, I mean, it didn't work out.
I wasn't there to know how much is Joe Sloan's fault or not, but I think you'd struggle to find an offensive coordinator that's never had a bad year.
I know he's had a lot of other good seasons.
I know he produced a quarterback that ended up being the number one overall draft pick.
So overall, one bad season, I mean, I think the amount of.
You could say that about a lot of people,
but I would say our head coach is one of the best offensive minds in the country.
He chose this guy, Ryan.
I think you've got to give him some leeway to go, all right,
that's the way I'll take it.
When your head coach, coach, Bo Nicks, Dylan Gabriel,
and he's got a number one draft pick in Oregon right now.
And this guy coached Jaden Daniels.
I mean, how good are we set up for our offense, man?
I just got to find the right pieces to plug into it.
I totally trust those two guys.
Generally speaking, take this view with assistant coaches, Drew, when I've not even seen the head coach.
I remember this when Mark Stoops was assembling his staff.
I'm going to give him his first staff.
I'm going to give him whoever he wants, right?
Like, without criticism, get whoever you want.
Like, this is your first time coaching.
You know these people better than I do.
I did not know this dude's name before yesterday.
So, yeah, maybe he didn't have a great year at LSU.
but if our new coach wants, he gets to assemble his first staff in my view without criticism.
Do you agree with that?
Yeah, I completely agree.
And LSU just had problems overall.
We don't know what kind of impact he had.
I know some of their fans are kind of mocking Kentucky on Twitter right now.
But that could have been, Nussmeyer wasn't good.
We know Kelly would have a disaster.
That could have been the whole operation this past season.
I'm willing to, you know, let, as you said, let what we call it, shop for their own groceries.
We'll let Will Stine do that and we'll judge how it looks after the first year.
And also different between what LSU expects and what Kentucky expects right off the gates.
That would be my thought about it.
They did take our offensive line coach.
Yeah, well, okay.
You know what, that's a really good point.
Yeah.
So are you still there, sir?
Yeah, I'm here.
Did you like Will Wolford as our offensive line coach?
I mean, we've had a pretty good running game in the past, so yeah, I thought he did okay.
But he wasn't here for that.
like we've had terrible offensive lines two of the last three years.
I mean, my guess is you were not a fan of his, or am I wrong?
No, that's pretty accurate.
Okay, LSU just took him.
Is LSU stupid?
Lane Kiffin just took him.
Is he stupid?
Yeah, I mean, you make a pretty good point.
You make a pretty good point.
I'm optimistic about it.
I'm a little sad to hear the news coming out from BBN about Mark Cope.
A lot of people saying he's on the hot seat already,
but we haven't really had a healthy roster all year.
Yeah, nobody's, I mean, nobody, he's not on the hot seat.
Yeah, I appreciate to call.
Yeah, I agree.
You're switching to just something else negative.
He's not on the hot seat.
But back to Sloan, we'll see what happens, but I feel, I'm going to feel confident until it not, right?
Stein's the best offensive play caller in the country.
Everybody wanted him.
You know, everybody wants to coach Will Stein.
I think, even though he's, as he said, I'm not actually sending in the plays, my footprint's going to be all over it.
So I'd say he's still going to be in pretty good control.
wants to coach with Will Stown.
I love that confidence, right?
Yeah, yes, I agree.
There'd be a couple lines people
will remember.
Remember, it was just a couple weeks ago,
Mark Pope said in the press conference,
this team will not fail.
Uh-huh.
Well, how's that working out for you?
Well, season's not over.
Who's next?
Big Don is next.
Big Don, how are you?
Hey, boys, what's going on?
It's Big Dawn.
All right, appreciate to call.
I think, Rick, you're going to have to listen
to whether it's Don or there's another letter.
after it because I think maybe he had another letter after it, Rick.
Okay.
Well, that was the guy that called the postgame show the other night where Ryan was hosting.
He was very emotional after the game.
Yes.
Oh, was that a real caller?
Yeah.
Oh, okay.
My bad.
He had a great post game.
Don, call back.
Got the quick hook.
If he's called before, if you're listening, my fault, I thought you said something else.
Call back.
Who's next?
We'll take your call.
Rick, if he calls, we'll put him on immediately.
Go ahead.
Who's next?
Evan is next.
Evan.
Go ahead, Evan.
Matt, I'm on my way to Nashville right now.
I'm a vet student at Auburn,
and I'm going to be very upset if I drive up here
to watch our best players play 23 or 24 minutes a game
and stand there and watch Brandon Garrison get taken advantage of
by Graham E.K.
And watch rebounds go right over his head.
I do not know.
Pope is going to have to get his minutes figured out,
and I know he doesn't have any options,
but you cannot play Brandon Garrison more than 7 or 8 minutes a game.
This got lost, and I appreciate the call.
It got lost in what happened the rest of the game.
But I will note, because I was following along some on ESPN,
we started out really hot against North Carolina, right?
Yeah.
It's 10 to 4, crowds going crazy, and what do we do?
Mass substitution.
Mass substitution, and then all of a sudden it's 13 to 10, North Carolina.
I don't care what Marks of Pope says about analytics.
I've watched for two years, these teams start fast, mass substitution turns around.
Happened against Louisville on the road.
People forget we had a lead in that game off the start.
It happened in like seven or eight games last year.
I don't know why he insists on doing that.
Why?
Why do we mass substitute right at the beginning of the game?
It has never worked.
And, you know, the second half of the game, he didn't substitute at all.
He ran with those five guys, so he kind of flipped floppy's philosophy.
You've heard him say he wants to get those guys off the bench in case he needs him late in the game.
And he wants to save some legs from his starters in case he needs them late in the game.
But do we really think that if he brings one in Shannon or two, that at the end of the game, the guy are all going to collapse?
I mean, I can't imagine that's true.
No, I don't think so.
And the other thing is about, you know, these guys being tired after playing so many minutes.
They're playing 20 minutes.
and we're talking about Yellovich being tired.
I mean, Ryan makes a good point, Drew.
He played those guys the whole second half.
I feel like that would make a bigger difference in being tired
than the second segment of the first half.
And they were hot.
Like you just turned it off.
Like they were rolling.
Who knows what they could have gone up by?
It's like, nope, seen enough from them up 10-4.
Let's put in the next round.
But the leave aside just the one-off,
the subbing at the other half.
When he says they're tired of the fatigue,
I do not understand it because there are guys all over the country
playing 30-something minutes a game and our guys are in the high 20s and he's talking about fatigue.
You think when Pope was a player, any of those guys were tired?
Rick was running their ass off in practice.
Those guys weren't tired.
There's something to that.
Yeah, I agree.
Here's what if it was working, I would buy those things.
But it's not working and so I just, I don't buy it.

We hope you don't need it.

They do it all over the state.

We'll take a break and be right back.

This morning, the internet lost its mind.

I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

What's up, fam?
It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reed.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers
why he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that,
Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,

Mm-hmm.
From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health.
These are real honest conversations.
We don't always get to have out loud.
Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right?
Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them?
Absolutely not.
During one meal, I'm standing.
I'm standing and handing my children food.
Because healing, empowerment, and resilience aren't just ideas.
They're practices.
And this Mental Health Awareness Month, there's no better time to pour back into yourself.

I need you all to purchase stuff here so that we're not losing money because Billy has already broken one lamp here today.
in this massive furniture out with all of these wonderful options and all of these people.
The only person who has broken something, Shannon, is Billy, who just broke a lamp right here in the middle of the outlet.
Crashed it.
He's over there sweeping.
He literally, his fee for coming here just got, he now is going to owe Ashley furniture money for this trip.
Send the bill to Iheart Radio.
No, send the bill to Billy Rutledge.
You can't take this guy anywhere.
He hasn't even had a mimosa yet.
He's breaking stuff.
And then I oak David said, did you break that lamp?
And he waved me off and said, no.
And now there's a picture of him looking at a shattered lamp.
He's rubbing his head.
He's so stressed out right now.
Look at him.
You can see it.
How do you break a lamp in a furniture store?
We just heard a loud shattered of glass.
And we look out and there's Billy.
All these people that it could have been.
None of the listeners did it.
It was our own.
And he also did it in that far corner where there would be no reason to,
So to the Ashley
Furniture people, I'm very sorry.
And to our rep who sold this,
please apologize profusely
on behalf of us
for letting Billy out of the house.
Look at it. He's stressing out about it right now.
Take him over to the mattresses where he can't break anything.
He's lay down on one of those. Take a night, Billy.
He just collapses right there.
All right. I actually,
apparently he did say dog.
I thought he said something else.
So my bad, big dog is on the phone.
Go ahead, Big Dog.
It's Don, actually.
Okay, Don.
Whatever it is, he's here.
Big Don.
All right.
Yeah.
D-O-N, Don.
Don.
Gotcha.
Not D-O-N-G, which is what I thought.
Go ahead.
Boys, I'm back in.
I'm heading south.
I got the ticket tone out.
I got the ticket tone out.
I'm heading south.
I'm back in on the cat.
All right.
I hope you're right.
I mean, we just had somebody here who just found it.
ticket. I just had somebody send me apparently two lower level tickets, which I'm going to give
away if I get them in my email to somebody here since they're so close. But they got to actually
send them to me. But if they do, but go ahead.
Hey, Drew, congratulations. But I got to say, you ain't going to have a pot to piss in now.
Thank you. It's very kind.
But, hey, what the biggest mistake we've ever had was Mitch.
the NIL responsibility.
Yeah.
Well, I appreciate the call.
I will note something about that.
We talked about this yesterday.
I want to be clear, like, I don't know if that NIL deal with JMI is going to work.
We'll see.
All I want to know is what's happening.
That's all I'm asking.
And my issue with Mitch, I mentioned my thing about him communicating.
still, I still think that's true, but I just want to know about it because there were reports
right after the show yesterday.
This is before I even said all that, or excuse me, after I said this, that Christian Collins,
the top high school recruit, that part of the reason Kentucky hasn't gotten him signed is
they can't seem to work out the NIL deal.
Now, maybe it's justifiable.
All I know is every other team got their top recruit signed, and the three we want so far
we haven't been.
So I'm skeptical, and I just need people to explain to me what's going on,
and I don't think Mitch has done a good job.
High school state championships are today.
Let's go over the first three.
Tell me about the games today.
First game is the Raceland Rams we talked about, and Kentucky Country Day.
I know nothing about Kentucky Country Day other than that's where Los Angeles Dodger catcher
Will Smith went to high school.
It's about all I know.
All right. Shannon, who you got?
I'm going to go Kentucky Country Day.
We've already shown that Raceland can't win the big ones.
one. They came to the bar last night, so I wish you hadn't said that.
I'm going to go with Raceland who spent money with us last night.
He still can't win the big one.
Shannon is ungrateful. Who'd you like?
Racel not only came last night. They come every single year. We are all on the Raceland
Rams bandwagon.
Of course, going Raceland. I saw Ryan even had the hoodie on yesterday.
We're all in on the Rams. We're all in because this guy.
I'm going to make your prediction. If you went to Kentucky Country Day, I don't think you'd fit
in very well. I think you'd fit him better at Raceland from what I know of Kentucky.
country day. What's the next game?
2A is the battle of the Christians and the Catholics.
Lexington and Christian to Catholic.
They did that in Europe for years.
And then Owensboro Catholic, big private school
battle in 2A. This may be the best
game of the whole weekend in terms of how close
it is. I'll take Owensboro Catholic. What do you got?
I got to go up my hometown LCA Eagles,
so I'm going to go LCA.
I thought your hometown was Owensboro.
That's my second hometown.
That's true.
I'm waiting for him to say Owensboro.
My hometown, Lexington.
I think Owensboro's more of your hometown.
town in Lexington. I've been in Lexington now for almost
30 years, so I think I kind of adopted
Lexington. But sometimes you adopt Owensburg. Well, when it's
beneficial to me, I do.
But now this is LCA.
Oswaldsboro Catholic wanted to come
to the restaurant, too, but they wanted to bring a hundred people.
All the more
reasons. I agree. That sounds like
a bad way. I agree.
You want to know, you want to know
sometimes why the restaurant business is hard.
One of the investors
is like, they want to come to
the restaurant. We can't do
that i was all for it yeah that's the problem the more people that want to come the matter of ryan
we turned out a hundred new brine's ridiculous what do you have his pick threw me off uh i was
going to go with lexon but since ryan abandoned his other hometown i'll go owensboro give me the catholics
yes i was three for owensboro catholic and what's the next game three a is christian academy of louisville
boy these christians and catholics are taking gods on their side they play murray the last time murray was in a state
finals, who did they play? Middlesboro. We beat them. Middlesboro. Yeah, we beat them. That was in like
1998, I think. That was one side of the state versus the other. As I understand it, isn't Christian
Academy a Louisville like a juggernaut? Yeah, they've won several state titles. So even though I'd like
for Murray to win, I think probably the Cal is going to win. I think Murray's even undefeated,
but I'm still picking Cow. Cowell in the postseason. I'm betting against that. Goal with Murray.
Christian Academy, unlike Raceland, they can win the big one.
So I'm going to Christian Academy.
What is Shannon so harsh on Rice?
All right, who's next?
Ben is up next.
Ben, you got 40 seconds.
Go ahead, sir.
Hey, guys.
This is Drew.
Being a girl, dad, awesome.
Thank you.
Best luck to you and Abby.
Second thing is, I was feeling down about Pope,
and then I got on TikTok last night,
and I saw highlights from Cal's press conference,
and he pulled one of those,
did you guys do what I did?
Oh, you didn't see what I did.
You guys are probably making a sandwich.
The crucial point of the game was when so-and-so got a block.
So I'm just really glad that we got rid of him, and there's some positivity for him.
Obviously, Arkansas beat Louisville, and that's led to a couple people going,
oh, I wish we still have.
Just remember, like the divorced couple that goes and finds new love,
he wasn't going to do that here.
Whether he doesn't in Arkansas, we'll see, but it wasn't going to happen at this place.
We'll take a break.

Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every
episode, we're cutting through the noise,
breaking down the biggest moments in sports,
and giving you the real story behind
the headline. And we're going straight to the
source, the athletes themselves.
Their locker room stories, their reactions
in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets
to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the
