This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.

Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. This is Saigon, the story of my family and of the country that shaped us. From IHeart Podcast, Saigon.
Starting point is 00:01:52 You don't think I'm serious about a free Vietnam? One city, a divided country, and the war that tore America apart. This is for Vietnam. They're pouring Patrick all over here. Freedom for Vietnam! There's a fire coming to this country and it's going to burn out everything. Starting point is 00:03:31 got some, a couple things. First of all, Shannon, people are saying you're wrong. Ty goes does go to the runner. They say Google's wrong. Do you believe they're wrong? No, I think they're wrong. Google's got it right. They don't know what they're talking about.
Starting point is 00:03:41 I got heard from a couple umpires said they're, that is the myth. Well, so the runners are saying Google's right. Google's right that the runner has to beat the throw to be out. Yeah. I mean to be safe. The runner has to beat the throw to be safe. So I need to start saying tie goes to the fielder. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:58 After all these years, I've said they're on. thing. It's going to be hard to get out. One of the Empire, I always said, if it's a tie, he'd definitely going to be out. We're trying to get the game over as fast as possible. Yeah, it sounds like referees aren't on the same page. Imagine that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:10 All right, lots of facts about Cal Poly. Okay. San Luis Obispo, apparently one of the most beautiful parts of California on the beach. Oh, nice. It is the school where the people in Big Bang Theory went to school. Okay. Did you know that? Did you know that?
Starting point is 00:04:30 I've never seen it, but now I know that. I was right. They were in the 2014 NCAA tournament and were Cal Poly slow. See, you couldn't have made that up. Who knew that? Kristen Smart was murdered at Cal Poly in your own backyard podcast solved the case. I've listened to that podcast, actually.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Did you know that? I didn't connect to school, but I'm very aware of that story. One person writes, I think Cal Poly is what that means. means is the people that go there also hook up with people from other university. I do have a couple famous alumnus. It feels like that's probably true, right? Yeah. Who are some famous alumnus?
Starting point is 00:05:11 John Madden. He went to Cal Poly Slow. Ozzy Smith. And here's the big one, Weird Al Yankovie. That's a pretty good three. First of all, I would argue John Madden and Ozzie Smith for a college that we don't know is a pretty amazing one-two sports punch. Yes, it is.
Starting point is 00:05:35 One of the greatest short stops in history of baseball, one of the greatest NFL coaches ever. John Madden was also a good player, wasn't he? I don't know. I'm not sure about that. And one of the greatest performers of all time, Weird Al. I can get behind that. I knew a guy I went to college with that you know how people will follow Fish on tour? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:55 He followed Weird Al for a few weeks. No, he did. Weird Al is coming to Louisville. Weird Al is coming to Louis. popular enough to play the KFC YUM center. Stop it. Weird Al is not playing the Yom Center. No, he's not.
Starting point is 00:06:06 There's no way he can fill up the Yom Center. Well, I mean, maybe they curtain off the top part, but he is playing the Yom Center. Wow. Weird Al is playing the Yom Center? Yep. Who is going to Weird Al in 2025? I'd go. Me?
Starting point is 00:06:21 I'd go. Let's all go. Okay, you all can say you'd go. But would any of you actually leave your house, buy tickets, and go see Weird Al? If I knew he was doing Amish Paradise, I'm in there. Well, of course he's going to do. What else is he going to do? He's got a hit.
Starting point is 00:06:37 White and nerdy? Eat it? Yeah, like a surgeon. Like a surgeon. Did you ever see the mockumentary about Weird Al? No. I saw it. So why don't you go?
Starting point is 00:06:50 He's playing in Louisville. Like Shannon said, if I got free tickets and they're decent seats, I would meet Shannon. We'd go. Sounds like we should all go. Well, sounds like they'll fill it if everyone gets free seats. If they don't get free seats, maybe not. Let's do a couple other things real quick. Sharon, is it Sharon or Sharon?
Starting point is 00:07:08 Sharon Moore, the coach at Michigan. That story disintegrated quickly, didn't it? I mean, he gets going yesterday. He gets fired for having a relationship with a staffer, and then it goes from he has a relationship with a staffer, and he's fired to, he, quickly goes over to in prison, in jail for
Starting point is 00:07:34 assault. Not good. Yeah, it was like the afternoon, we saw that there were parting ways for cause. I was like, man, what could the cause be? And then a little bit later that comes out the rumor, then a couple hours later, he's been detained by police. And it was like, what is going on in Ann Arbor? It just kept going. It was like a trickle.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Every few minutes it got worse. Yeah. So, I mean, that situation is very serious. Don't want to make light of it. But let's go to second situation, which then is who's going to be the Michigan coach? Kind of you missed your window of bringing in a big-name coach or somebody would excite the fan base for sure. Yeah, I mean, who do you get? Like, everyone, Penn State got turned down by everyone.
Starting point is 00:08:15 So, like, there's some talk that the Alabama coach might. With the Michigan, at this stage, it'd be hard to get anyone really wanted. I mean, Penn State was a joke until they finally made the hire last week. Yeah, I don't know. So what do you do? Do you just have an interim coach next season? season and give you a year to search for a new head coach. But you're Michigan.
Starting point is 00:08:32 I mean, you're Michigan. You got to go. I mean, can you imagine if we at Kentucky were just like we're going to get an interim coach? This would be the equivalent of us in like June, our basketball coach getting, you know, having this happen after signing day, after the portal's over. And, well, I guess the portal hasn't opened yet. So they've still got the chance to move quick.
Starting point is 00:08:55 That's part of why you've got to move quick is the portal's going to open here in a couple weeks. I mean, do you just call the people that turn down Penn State and hope that they like Michigan better? Just get that BYU. You got another race? The Crumble Cookies guy getting involved again. Well, even some of the guys that Penn State went after have re-signed new deals at their
Starting point is 00:09:12 current school. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, they're, I don't know what they're going to do. Mark Stoops. Wow. He's right there. What if he ends up on the list? What if Mark Stubbs ends up the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M?
Starting point is 00:09:27 He wouldn't want to go to Texas A&M. after you all almost. I can't. Yeah. So anyway, that's a tough, tough story. Now, something else makes me upset. I got my hopes up. I shouldn't let it happen.
Starting point is 00:09:40 I got my hopes up that the Reds were going to sign Kyle Schwarber, and then they didn't. It turns out they offered close to the same amount of money. He decided to stay in Philadelphia, so I now can't stand that guy. Because he came up and he was like, I'd love to play in my home city. I'm from here. This would be awesome. It would be a dream come true, and now the story comes out yesterday. They offered him the same amount of money as the Phillies, and he just stayed there.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Ty goes to Philadelphia. Ty went to Philadelphia. That's exactly right. What a liar he was. So boo Kyle Schwabor. I didn't realize how excited Reds fans were and thought this would happen. My friends that are Red slash Bingles fans were absolutely crushed yesterday. Well, he's from Cincinnati, and he's like one of the best.
Starting point is 00:10:22 He would hit 500 home runs a year in that ballpark because it's so small, and he would kill it. He's exactly what we need. Like if we had him, I think we'd have a chance to be next to the Dodgers, the best team in the National League. But now we don't have him. We're going to stink again. And he lied. Kyle liar.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Can he come home after this? No. It's not allowed to be his home anymore. That's right. He can't come. They'll come home for Christmas next week. No, I don't. At least do have season tickets to watch the Red Sock next year.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And by the way, they didn't sign him. Guess when my season ticket deposit was doing? yesterday Monday and I paid it they got you again they got me again sales guy loves you Monday he's like well you put your deposit in it would have been good to team him up with Ellie those two guys in the lineup would have created a lot of excitement you say where's your deposit on Schwerber apparently we can't blame them they offered the same amount of money
Starting point is 00:11:23 this is on snodder there in the Phillies of all teams I don't care. I just, I want it, why can't they be good? I just want them to be good. I'd like to go to games where they're good. I mean, I know they were, and then when they got good was when I was in South Africa last year. I haven't, they're never good when I'm here. I feel like why can't they be good is all of my sports teams the last two years.
Starting point is 00:11:45 That's every two, you're a Braves fan. You all've been good in the years past. I mean, Kentucky football, Kentucky basketball, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Braves. That's true. 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, I heard you talk on Cover Zero about your new car. You better do maintenance on it or you'll be in trouble. You saw my new car out there.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Looks nice. I was afraid to park near it. Yeah, I don't want anybody near it. I was going to park it over at the Sonic to keep people from getting near it. Because it's going to get messed up, but I just want it to last as long as it can. You're talking about bells and whistles. I mean, you've got an LCD screen there as your monitor. It's like got everything on it.
Starting point is 00:12:23 It's really cool. But they were very much like, you have to do the maintenance. Like, this is a car that if you don't do the maintenance, it will punch you in the face. Like, you've got to do it. And I even bought the little package that comes with it so that I could just drop the car off and run away and come back and get it. You got to remember to actually do that, though. Well, apparently, like, I've got an app, and it'll just start yelling at you when it's its time. He's got an app now.
Starting point is 00:12:51 It's pretty good. No, you're welcome to the modern world. Do you have an app? No. I don't forget to have my oil chains and maintenance my car. No, every time I turn it on, it tells you what it needs. It's like, give me soda. It's a perfect car for you, though.
Starting point is 00:13:08 No, it is. It is. But then I actually have to go and do it. That's the big part. When it's beeping at you, will you then take that next step? You need the car to drive itself to get the oil change. Tesla. You've got a self-driving car to go get its own oil truck.
Starting point is 00:13:22 It could do it while I'm asleep. You go home, get the oil change, and then dirty. I saw someone right you and say, you should get a battery-powered car, because then you could just plug it in. I want to reply, no, he will not plug it in, and then the next day he'll come out to a dead battery. And that'll be its own issue. Call Mario, come get me.
Starting point is 00:13:39 I would never plug it in, ever. Did you get everything out of your old car? No. I just, you know, it was totaled, and I just was like, I've not wanted to clean this car out, they can have it. He got the important stuff out like the expired skittles. I did get the important stuff out.
Starting point is 00:13:57 I got my, I got, what did he say? The expired skittles. I said, you got the important stuff out like the expired skittles. The expired skittles I left in. There's a lot of mementos in there. Someone's going to buy that car an auction and have like the key to Somerset and a chair from the Royal Rumble.
Starting point is 00:14:13 My Bollong. Would you like to know the three things I did take out of my car? Yeah, that's it. I had gone to the dry cleaner. Okay. I took my golf clubs. And I made sure to take the Conway Twitty cookbook. Tells you your three-eyed of that of the car.
Starting point is 00:14:27 And I left 200 other things in the car. But I made sure to take those three things. Was it in the glove box with like the information of the car? Where did you even have a Conway Twitty cookbook in there? It was in the backseat. So when I got in the wreck, the stuff went everywhere in the car. I think it was already everywhere. It just shuffled it around and brought like that.
Starting point is 00:14:48 It switched to other spots. But the Conway Twitty Cookbook was right there in a prominent spot saying like, don't leave me. It's like a message. It was. And I did not. I listened to it. Who's up next? Ben.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Ben. Ben, go ahead, Ben. Hey, guys. Two quick things. Matt, I'm not real sure how confident I would be with taking Billy is my stat guy for your game. Because a few days ago, even after all this time of working with and for you guys, he told Shanna on the pre-show, he thought you and my room were doing the TV broadcast. He did say that.
Starting point is 00:15:22 He did not. We're not doing the TV broadcast. I tried to say it was radio. He's like, no, I'm pretty sure it's TV. No, wait a minute. Billy thinks we're doing the TV broadcast? He did. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Well, he can't be my stats guy if he doesn't even know what the medium is. Well, that's all we. They're not going to put us on the TV broadcast. I've never even done a radio broadcast. You think they're going to put me on the TV? No, I'm on the radio broadcast. You're hopefully will sink it up to your television. but I'm on the radio.
Starting point is 00:15:51 You should tell your stats guy. I heard this on the pre-show. Shannon was trying to correct him, but stat boy was certain. Shannon, thank you for trying to correct him. I was trying. So we're already correcting my stats guy. Yeah, he's already wrong.
Starting point is 00:16:02 He's already wrong. You should want to do the TV broadcast because it's easier. You can see the action. On radio, you've got to describe it in detail. I've decided we're just going to go avant-garde. I'm taking calls. Billy go to screen. calls and be your stat guy.
Starting point is 00:16:21 Just think about that for a minute, though. Don't you think it'd be kind of fun in a game to take calls? Like to hear from Western and Southern Miss fans their reactions during the game? No, we want to hear the game. You're trying to do the Manning
Starting point is 00:16:39 broadcast on the radio is what you're trying to do. It sounds like. That doesn't worry. Do you really want to hear the game? It's Western and Southern Miss. Yeah. If you're listening on the radio, you want All right, fine. I thought Shannon would like my idea of taking calls.
Starting point is 00:16:52 I think it's a good idea. I get a great idea. If you were like, because, I mean, if Western and Southern Miss fans really care, they're going to listen to their local broadcast, right? So take calls. I expect first quarter you're talking about what happened in the McDonald's drive-thru and what the Reds did overnight. It's just going to turn it into KSR.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I thought Shannon would like that idea. It sounds like you're trying to get out of doing play-by-play to me. Well, because I don't know how good I'm going to be at it. So we'll see. Who's next? Mike. Mike, go ahead, Mike. Yeah, I'd like to know if y'all have heard anything on football recruiting.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Well, since Will Stein, no, I appreciate the call. They kept Drew most of their class together for football. They lost, I think, one or two guys. Then they got this kid, the four-star wide receiver. What about post then? I mean, there's not a lot of guys to get because most of them signed on signing day. Yeah, we're kind of wait for the portal window now. I mean, Kenny Darby, the receiver that had offers from most of the big names.
Starting point is 00:17:48 That was the big get that kind of surprised everyone, but now you wait and get Will back from Oregon and get these coordinators and everyone to work and fill it out with the portal class. And I think for recruiting next year, you're not going to see him get really involved until he's done at Oregon. I just don't, you know, I don't know how that would happen.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Yeah. It'll get real newsy around New Year's when the portal certainly will. That's why, you know, he's kind of crucial for him to get some guys in his staff at GM and offensive accord and start doing some stuff behind the scenes while he's still out working at Oregon. I mean, we're going to be very active in the portal. We're probably going to end up getting a lot of guys
Starting point is 00:18:21 because he's going to want to bring in his players. You know, I think Kentucky will be, I think we'll have a very active and hopefully successful portal year. Do you think he'll bring some guys from Oregon with you? Yes, of course. Probably that quarterback, right? Isn't that what we think? I would suspect he'd bring a quarterback to compete.
Starting point is 00:18:40 I don't know that, even though he's spoken highly of bowling when he gets the chance. But, you know, he talks about recruiting Kentucky, and he'll be in with some freshmen, but he needs to win right away, and that'll require going out and get some guys that are ready to play. Especially with that schedule we have next year. Yeah. Clayton and Kroom was founded on a simple idea. All leather goods should last a lifetime. They make everything from bags, belts, wallets, and more.
Starting point is 00:18:59 And they're doing it right here in Kentucky. Check them out at Clayton and Kroom.com. C-R-U-M-E-D-com. It's Christmas. You want to know what to get? Get leather. Leather goods from Clayton and Kroom. Located on Shelby Street and Newloo.

Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's
Starting point is 00:21:37 going to be exhausted this series. because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:21:52 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the bar. After you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court,

I was having panic attacks. I was agoraphobic. And making it through hardship. To be present is a learned skill.
Starting point is 00:22:48 And it's hard to be present. We'll talk with John Nelson about clinical depression and the brain implant that saved his life. What I learned is that procedure made me happy because I'm disease-free. And we'll talk with leading experts like Judd Brewer about anxiety. and John Hirschfield about obsessive-compulsive disorder and the science of how the brain can change.
Starting point is 00:23:13 This is a month of deeply personal and honest conversations about what happens when the brain goes off course and what we can do about it. Listen to Inner Cosmos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Lay it down. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. I wasn't going to leave this.
Starting point is 00:23:35 Conway Twitties cookbook is an interesting read. some not culturally appropriate things to say anymore from Conway written in the 70s. In a cookbook? How can you be controversial in a cookbook? The way he describes some of the ethnic foods from other countries. I don't think he meant anything by it. But you know how your grandparents might have said things? You're like, we don't say that anymore, Granny.
Starting point is 00:24:04 That's kind of how Conway talked. So there's more to it than just like half a couple. cup of sugar table sugar. Yeah, he'd be like, well, I mean, I don't need to say it. But he'd make color commentary. Okay, there's some editorial stuff. Yeah, he wouldn't just do the, he would give Conway's thoughts on the dishes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:22 And sometimes you would go, Conway, you know, you can't do that. Just tell me how much broth I need. That's right. I don't need to know your thoughts on some of these other things. So did you put it in the back of the new car? Is that where it's going to rest now? No, no, no, no. I'm going to keep this car clean.
Starting point is 00:24:40 You're learning how to cook. Conway's going to teach you. That didn't work as well as this is. 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, you should take calls during the broadcast. I think it's great. Don't listen to Shannon. He wears a speedo.
Starting point is 00:24:56 I just want to know how that works. How are you going to take phone calls when you're trying to call the action of the game? You'd come back from break and you'd go, you know, Southern Miss takes over at their own 33, yard line. It's going to be first and ten before we do this play. Let's go out to Johnny in Bowling Green. Johnny, how do you feel about how the hilltoppers are doing? And then we go right back to the game. The whole point is, though, knowing what happens in the game. We won't know what happened when you're talking to Johnny. And I'll go while Johnny was talking. They ran for four yards and now it's second and six from 37.
Starting point is 00:25:27 You'll butt into whatever Johnny's saying and let people know. Exactly. I'll be like, this is what happened, but let's let Johnny tell us about what he had for lunch. About 11 in Ohio. There could be a place to take a couple calls during a game. There's a little dead time when they're reviewing a call. The goes to make a revolutionary broadcast. Most people say the start to big things is the New Orleans Bowl. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:25:49 25th year anniversary. It's a big deal. It is a big deal. How early do you have to get there? There's like meetings with coaches and stuff. So we, the game is on the 20. I'm going to miss the yoga. The yoga is on the 21st.
Starting point is 00:26:01 I don't get to go to the yoga. But the 23rd is the game. we have to be there to meet with the staffs on the 22nd. I don't know what to say to those people. How are you all doing? You want to call into our show? Give you the hotline. Live from the sidelines.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Yeah. So we meet with the staff on the 22nd. There's a dinner that night, New Orleans Bowl dinner. I bet that's good, to be honest with you. Yeah. Then the game's on the time. I have to fly home on Christmas Eve. Anybody ever been in an airport on Christmas Eve?
Starting point is 00:26:36 I feel like that'll be probably be great. Probably won't be the best experience in the world. But, you know, this is what you do. This is the life of a New Orleans bowl commentator. Who's next? DG. DG.
Starting point is 00:26:52 What's up, DG? What's up, guys? Hey, just first off, shout out to Jack and Jacob. The people of Kentucky, we needed that. and for the ones who are giving pushback on that, we needed to hear. We was all wondering what's going on. I guess my question for you all is,
Starting point is 00:27:11 you know, you talked about there being a fix, the fix with JMI and Pope. With that fix, how soon is that fix going to be? Do you think it could be something we can fix to we get Collins and Stokes? Because, you know, I'm afraid what happened
Starting point is 00:27:25 is moving on to, you know, let's say we don't get these top recruits. Well, then we have another. year where we don't have that guy, that dude that y'all keep referring to. And then we're looking at year three with Pope. And, you know, I just, I guess that's my question. I think it's a totally fair question. Totally fair question. I think they're in a tough spot here, Ryan, because they need to get at least one or two of these top high school guys, or they need to kill the portal, but they're going to have a problem because they've kind of overpaid in the portal maybe this year. And so
Starting point is 00:27:57 guys may demand more money. Like, it's going to be, it's a tough situation. But The thing is, I do think it's fixable. I don't think this season this year is over. Beat Indiana Saturday. That gets some folks back. Get some, you know, the conference like we've talked about is not as good as it's been in years past. There's some movement you can make. So I don't think it's, oh, I'm not going to anybody that thinks it's over.
Starting point is 00:28:21 These are fixable problems. Like you've kind of alluded to, they're kind of easy fix, really. As long as you go out and get the Collins kid, maybe, you know, this week, I think a lot of people feel a lot more favorably about what we're doing in the basketball program than we do right now. Oh, if you get him, then I think it's a day. You get one of these guys. I think it's a different. Drew, it's different.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Part of what's hard for people, I think part of what made last week so bad is you played North Carolina who has this Caleb Wilson kid that should be here. Now, he didn't play great against us, but he's clearly a top talent. That's the kind of kid that should be here. He goes to North Carolina. you lose then at home, then you play Gonzaga and you're not even competitive. So you play a North Carolina team that got an elite recruit, and you didn't, and they beat you, and then you play a Gonzaga team built with homegrown guys and portal guys, and they destroy you, and then there's like, well, what are we doing?
Starting point is 00:29:15 And I don't love one of the big portal misses is coming to town on Saturday, and that adds to the... Well, we want to talk about that. But there is something to, like, getting Collins. One thing Cal was good at is when they were losing or bad news would come out, He was good at that. He'd go out and get a commitment and show, you know, we're still doing all right. We're okay. Pope needs to land one quickly to put this together a little bit.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Yeah, and in 2013 when we had such a bad year, he brought in arguably his most talented class of all time for the 2014 season. Right? So, you know, we need a dose of good news. I want to talk about the IU part. Mark's story had an interesting column today. We'll deal with it right after this. Kentucky Sports Radio. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Call T.J., he'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. Is this, I assume, Weird Al. Yes, my balona. What's it called? My balona.
Starting point is 00:30:12 That's great. We got to go. You can go. I'm not going. I like Weird Al fine, but I can't devote an evening to Weird Al. He's got to be 70s. He's still performing doing these songs? Yes, that's the point.
Starting point is 00:30:27 I'm not going. I'm not going. I mean, I appreciate that you want to. Come on, this is a great song. I'd like to go. Stavros is coming here. I'd like to see that. Can somebody get me tickets to that?
Starting point is 00:30:37 To what? He's like a comedian. Stavros? Yeah. He's coming to the opera house. Never heard of him. Good venue. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:45 I never heard of him. He's no weird owl. You just go to Weird Al. Give me Weird Al. I've been milken and plow in so long that even Ezekiel thinks that my mind is gone. What a great song. A couple things in terms of for you to listen to over the next two days. Our cover zero is out.
Starting point is 00:31:02 I had to miss a couple episodes, but I'm back from, we had a lot of fun yesterday. If you're not listening to NFL cover zero, it doesn't matter if you're an NFL fan or not. As a matter of fact, you'll probably like it better if you're not, because we're not talking about that. But the newest episode's really fun, and Drew and I tell stories, including we talk Drew Dad's stuff. So, check it out. And then today my interrupted podcast comes out. I had Terry Miners on. And it actually is, we talk a lot about Kentucky stuff, but also Terry gets kind of emotional.
Starting point is 00:31:35 And I was surprised how much I talked to him about. You know, he has 13 brothers and sisters. He's one of 14 kids. I was just like, how does that work? 14 kids. He told me, not to do the spoiler for the podcast, 14 kids, there are something like 80 like grandkids or something like that
Starting point is 00:32:00 you got an entire football team there that's crazy I said do you all ever get together and he was like well during Christmas we'll do something and he was like we rent out a gym you'd have to yeah where else would you put 80 grandkids they rent out a gym to see each other isn't that wild it's awesome you know and he's been on the air now in WHS for 40 years he'll be on
Starting point is 00:32:22 he started in Lexington in 1977. Next year will be his 50th year on the radio. That's crazy. Isn't that insane? And a super nice guy. Super nice guy. So I think folks will really enjoy it. We had a really good conversation yesterday.
Starting point is 00:32:39 He cried at one point. Did he? Yeah, because he got emotional. We were talking about my dad, which let him to start talking about his family. And it's just a really sweet. So I recommend that's the interrupted podcast. We will absolutely check it out. And he's as genuine as you hear on the radio.
Starting point is 00:32:54 He really is. He's as nice as it come. Philip Rivers is coming back to play in the NFL. He has not played a football game since 2021. Speaking to somebody who's got like 15 kids, how many kids does he have? He's got a bunch. I think he has 10. He's got 10 kids and he's leaving them.
Starting point is 00:33:11 That's why he's coming back. He's got to get out of the house. 10 kids. He has not played a game since 2021 and he's coming back and may start this week. for the Indianapolis Colts. There's no way that works, right? Unlikely, but I'm rooting for it. I mean, he's basically admitted I'm fat now.
Starting point is 00:33:31 I'm not going to be running. I might play. Not in the best shape. Like you said, he had to have just been tired. I bet he's been throwing the football 200 times in the backyard. He's like, if I'm going to be throwing this much, I should at least go back to the league. But he's got to be, like, you can't just all of a sudden be on NFL speed.
Starting point is 00:33:49 If you've for five years been sitting around. I actually think it would be a bad sign for the NFL if he's good. The guys can just come off their couch and then five years later be good. These backups, like the one he's now competing with Riley Leonard, who's a rookie, there has to be so deflating that they're like, you know, we'll just call this guy that's been retired for five years. We'll call this old man that's down at the street. I'm going to watch it because I'm fascinated as to what's going to happen, aren't you?
Starting point is 00:34:17 I have 100% going to watch it, and I'm pulling for the guy. I mean, we just saw Joe Flacco at his 40s have some success. But Flacko had been, like, on rosters. This guy's not done anything for five years. In his 40s, I'm pulling for him. The Colts were desperate. All three of their quarterbacks on the roster are hurt. They had nowhere to go.
Starting point is 00:34:37 They had somewhere to go. I mean, they didn't have to. I mean, was why a tittle not available? You know, they're not out of it. What if he stringed together a few wins? Yes. We have playoff Phillip Rivers. age 44. That's another thing. It's not like he's just filling in the time. They are in the
Starting point is 00:34:55 playoffs right now. Very much. It's a pretty amazing story. I can't think of anything like that. Can you think of somebody having that much time off? I mean, like Michael Jordan was off for two years, but he played baseball. I mean, he didn't just completely stop being an athlete. I can't remember anything like this before. I think he's been coaching high school football, right? So he's been on the football field throwing around. Okay, but I mean, do you want Mark Stewart? to play for the Colts tomorrow? I mean, like... It's a little different than a defensive end coming at you.
Starting point is 00:35:25 I don't think that's the same thing, is it? I'm pulling for him. I hope they win. I even know who they play, but I'm pulling for them. I think they're at Seattle. It's a big game. It's a tough game for them. Put them on the road.
Starting point is 00:35:35 They're playing. It gets the hard defense. I'm all... I'm going to bet his overs. Three touchdown day. A lot of pressure on that offensive line, too. Yeah, you know the office... You got to take care of the old man back there.
Starting point is 00:35:45 Yeah, can you exactly. Can you imagine, like, your offensive line for a nursing home and you're like, can you all please not hurt him? Maybe they're more motivated, you know? Yeah. All right, well, we'll see. Who's next? Sean.
Starting point is 00:35:58 Sean, go ahead, Sean. I say he started talking about Philip Rivers, and I have to change what I was going to say. Whenever he goes in, the very first play, they need to take the film clip of the longest yard when Bert Reynolds goes in. He got Rob Schneider up there. That's right. He's your old ass across the end zone.
Starting point is 00:36:18 And then, Ryan, you're right. When I watched Godfather probably first time in maybe the 80s, I too said, hey, there's fish. Yeah. I'll let you go. Oh, Mark Pope. One thing about him, and I love Mark Pope, but the one thing about Mark Pope when this recruiting part is,
Starting point is 00:36:37 if he had stayed in medical school, he would still be the same Kentucky fan as a doctor as he is as our coach. That's true. And I don't think you're ever going to get that emotion out of it. And I absolutely think we need to follow, like, the NIL of college football. We go get us a general manager. And we quit thinking this is amateur sports and is the big blue corporation, and it's got to be ran like one.
Starting point is 00:37:02 No, it does. You're exactly right. And I appreciate the call. And I think you're about, I mean, this is my opinion. And I could be wrong. We're about to see a C shift. If you go back to October, let's just pick a day, October 1st. of this year.
Starting point is 00:37:20 By the time we get to October 1st of next year, I think you're going to have seen as dramatic a shift in UK athletics as you have seen since integration. And what I mean by that is we will have a new football coach. I think we will have a completely new structure of the entire football operation. And I mean how it's run, who oversees it, how they get players. I think you're going to have a new athletic director.
Starting point is 00:37:53 I think you're going to have a new president. I think you're going to have, you already have this new Champions Blue structure. I think you're going to have a JMI arrangement that will still exist, but I think will be in a different form than was announced six months ago because they don't have a choice. And I think you're going to see a completely different UK athletics. Now, the question is,
Starting point is 00:38:18 is, do you set that complete? That's happening no matter what. So the question is, are you going to set that up for the modern era and in a way that can really succeed? Or are you going to try to hold on to the past and come out crippled? And it'll be up to the decision makers to decide that. But, you know, change is coming. You know, what is the Bob Dylan song? The times they are changing.
Starting point is 00:38:48 And so the question is, what I think in the Bob Dylan song, what does he say, Shannon, you can get with the new or be out like the old, but the time, like that's happening. And so the question, I think, Drew, is just how UK handles what I think is about to be a seismic shift in the university. Yep, and there's already been a seismic shift around them with everything, and we're behind on that. And I hope the new blood wants to be more of, you know, at the forefront cutting edge than we've kind of had someone that just reacts to everything and kind of dips a toe in. Well, let's wait and see how this. goes, then I'll commit. I want someone that's a little more innovative and exciting. And I hope they do it. I mean, I hope they already did the football part. I mean, getting rid of stoop's was like a gutsy thing to do in some ways because you had to pay the buyout and you had to do all
Starting point is 00:39:36 this stuff. That was step one. Mitch, I think, is going to retire. I think he needs to, but I also think he will. I think you're going to get a new president. I think you're just getting, it's a It will be a complete change. And then the question is, that next generation, what do they decide to do? So if this next generation coming in, it would be more advantageous for UKaths to hire somebody from outside, not promotes within. Yeah, I think I've given my opinion on that. When you're picking an athletic director, I think there's a couple people that should be in the mix because of what they've done here. But I also think you need to talk to people outside the mix.
Starting point is 00:40:14 And then you need to have people who decide which one of you, few, are the ones to best do it. You know, I've heard people say about the basketball GM thing. They say, well, why don't we get Naze Muhammad? Or why don't we get Rajan Rondo? I'm not saying Nazi Muhammad couldn't do it. I'm not saying Réjong. But here's what I would say to you. That's old thinking.
Starting point is 00:40:37 Okay, that's thinking of I want somebody I've heard of to do this. chances are the best person to be the basketball GM is somebody no one here's ever heard of. Right. Right. It's some business person who understands negotiating contracts, right? Like the most powerful person in sports media is a person that not one of you have ever heard of. His name is Michael Klein. He was actually my agent, and he left because he made so much money with pardon my take and Pat McAfee and all these people.
Starting point is 00:41:08 He didn't need to be an agent anymore. He now runs like multiple companies. He basically has his hand on everything that happens in media. And not one of you would ever know who he is, right? We need a GM probably, Drew, that nobody knows who they are that's just really good at that job. It's because all of this is so new. You don't really want anyone that was good at the old stuff where you're familiar with because times have changed. That's part of the reason we want change just throughout UK athletics because so many people are in the same seat they were 20 years ago,
Starting point is 00:41:38 but the job is nothing like it was 20 years ago. That's exactly right. You're exactly right. It's the guy who was the best at managing an assembly line, and now he's in charge of AI. Well, it's not the same job. And so if they get Nazi Muhammad, I'll support him. But like, we need to think bigger than that.
Starting point is 00:41:59 We need to get someone who is perfectly situated for this. And I don't know who that is, but hopefully the people that pick them will. And I don't think it's a bad thing to say Pope isn't good at that, good at this, good at that. I've thought this since NIL popped up, great head coaches probably shouldn't be good at the other side. There's not a perfect coach that's great at contracts, great at X's and O's, great at relationships. It needs to be divvied up because there's so much more to it than I'm just drawing up plays and trying to win games. And no one, even Nick Saban isn't good at every little thing you have to do now.
Starting point is 00:42:30 That's why he left. He knew he wasn't good on the NIO and it didn't like it. Everybody will tell you the best college football agent in the country's a guy. named Jimmy Sexton. Anybody ever, anybody know what he looks like? No, I don't. Anybody ever see him on TV?
Starting point is 00:42:44 Don't want to be seen on TV? He doesn't want to. What is it? Again, I feel like I coach quote Cal a lot. Real G's move silent like Lizzie. We're not going to give that to Cal.
Starting point is 00:42:54 That's a little way. Well, I heard it. Real G's moving in silence. Real G's moving silence like lasagna. I don't know what that means. Because the G is silent and lasagna. Okay, got you. Stop overpaying for sunglasses.

Starting point is 00:44:42 possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid?

Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
Starting point is 00:45:36 And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:46:03 Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. Man, he running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:46:18 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. There are times when the mind becomes a difficult place to live. This is David Eagleman with the Inner Cosmos podcast, and for Mental Health Awareness Month, we're dedicating a series to understanding the mind when it struggles. I'm joined by doctors, researchers, and those with lived experience. We'll talk with singer-songwriter Jewel about anxiety. I started living in my car and then my car got stolen.
Starting point is 00:46:49 I was shoplifting. I was having panic attacks. I was agoraphobic. And making it through hardship. To be present is a learned skill and it's hard to be present. We'll talk with John Nelson about clinical depression and the brain implant that saved his life. What I learned, is the procedure made me happy because I'm disease-free. And we'll talk with leading experts like Judd Brewer about anxiety and John Hirschfield about obsessive-compulsive disorder and the science of how the brain can change. This is a month of deeply personal and honest conversations

Listen to Inner Cosmos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio. What do you think immediately when you hear this song? Well, Antonio Hall. Yes.
Starting point is 00:47:51 Yes. I mean, that's why I think. I don't know if anybody else does. I do. Immediately you think Antonio Hall. He don't know nothing. Like, that is a deep cut, though. A.J. Stewart was here yesterday.
Starting point is 00:48:09 That was a deep cut, too. I walked past him three different times in his. here and did not know that was AJ Stewart. I couldn't see him though, but I didn't know it was him when he first walked in. I mean, we talk about Patrick Patterson and Jay Lucas being old school KSR, and that's true. But AJ Stewart is the oldest school KSR. Like when I think of the first recruits that we followed at KSR, there are two names that come to mind, one we got and one we did. A.J. Stewart, and again, this is before y'all were involved. But the second one is the name of a kid that only old school internet following recruits people remember.
Starting point is 00:48:51 Marshall Moses. Wow. Do you remember Marshall Moses? I remember that name. Don't remember anything about the story, but I remember that name. I don't remember where he went to school. I don't either. I don't know what happened to him.
Starting point is 00:49:02 But he was like the first, he and AJ Stewart were like the first recruits that we at KSR really connected to. So when I saw AJ yesterday, at first I didn't recognize him. Of course he knew Mario. Then I was like, wow, AJ. And he was like really nice, said he's followed us all these years. And, like, you know, I went to the Marshall County Hoops Fest in 2006, drove across the state to watch AJ Stewart play a game in 2006.
Starting point is 00:49:32 So it was neat seeing him there. Sign the big wall back here with the former players. Mario introduced me to him. I had no idea who he was. I saw your tweet, your selfie with him. And I got, that was A.J. Stewart? Wow. Great memory, though.
Starting point is 00:49:45 I love AJ Stewart was one of the nice. He and Billy didn't get along. So he's one of the players that didn't get the end of tubby or the beginning of a cow. He was just here for Billy's two years. Wow. That's it. But I really like that guy. Four star recruit, if I'm not mistaken.
Starting point is 00:49:58 It was a big get at the time. Yeah, he was a big get at the time. Somewhere in Florida. Serve pro is the number one choice in cleanup and restoration, whether it's mold, fire, storm, or water damage. We got a pro for that. It's serve pro. Independently owned and operated, they'll come make it like it never even happened. If you have flood, fire, water damage, whatever, go to ServePro.
Starting point is 00:50:16 It is SERVPR.com, and the ServePro First Responder Bowl is December 26th in Dallas. It's servepro.com. Who's next, Shannon? Let's go to Adam. Adam. Go ahead, Adam. What's up, Matt? How about Tyrone Nash for... Tyrone Nash.
Starting point is 00:50:36 Another good one. That's a good name from the past. I'm trying to think what was Darius Rice is a... another one from that era that sort of names in that time of recruiting. Go ahead. Hey, how would you like to be Youngstown State that, you know, you signed on to this football contract to play UK with your buddies, Mark Stubbs, and Vince Morrow, and now the new young Will Stein is going to come in and hang 70 on you?
Starting point is 00:51:06 Hope he does. Hope he does. Those are one of, I appreciate the call. Only two games, I think we're assured to win. next year, so I'm for it. Let's crush Youngstown State. Yeah, I mean, that game's completely different now. Just getting excited
Starting point is 00:51:20 about scoring 70, I know that's exclaimed, but just scoring points. I love where Stoops took us, he took us to new heights, but like the stat of being 0 and 49, if you're down by two touchdowns, I'm excited for that to change where we can light up the scoreboard. Can I make your prediction of something
Starting point is 00:51:36 that's going to happen in the football world in recruiting? Yes, go ahead. Will Stein and Vince Merrill going to be chirping at each other for like the next three years, don't you think? Because Vince was sub-tweeting Will's press conference and Will's going to fire back. Will Stein versus Vince Merrill is actually going to be fun. Especially the first time they go head-to-head for recruit some kid out of Louisville or something and Will and him are both going after that kid. And they're kind of on each other's turfs. You know, Vince still, you know, Lexington is still probably home to him and his brain, but Will is very tied into the
