Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

Starting point is 00:03:13 Ten days before Christmas. And finally, a game after we beat somebody good in basketball. All right. Kentucky beats Indiana on Saturday nights. 7260. You can give a shout. Love to hear from you. 859-2-80-22-87. Ryan is out today, so it is me and Drew and Shannon, and the cats had a miserable first half on Saturday night, but then maybe the best they've played this season in the second half to beat the Hoosiers in the first time they've played each other in 10
Starting point is 00:03:50 years. Drew, I don't know how you can't be pleased with the result. What looked like it might be another night towards misery ends up very positive. Yeah, ugly first half. You went into halftime down. Didn't want that at all. But then you get that big run right out of halftime. Otega, O'Wee hit a three, and then they're off. And, you know, the big story is just we saw, you know, been waiting for these guys
Starting point is 00:04:12 that been injured to come play. We saw what happens when Lowe and Diabate are healthy and make it a difference. Because Lowe played about every minute after halftime and Diabate, too. And they were the difference makers that helped wield them to that 12-point win. I never sold my Lowe stock. Held on? I held on. I was, what did they say during the, uh, during all the, the, the tech thing?
Starting point is 00:04:32 It was, uh, diamond hands. I was diamond hands on low. And I think you saw why. And then we said, I was obviously a great game from Diabate too. I mean, you know, the optimist view and they were getting to be fewer and fewer of these people, but the optimist view was, look, two, three of the five guys that people thought would be the best on team are not playing. And that's part of it.
Starting point is 00:04:53 But you really saw it Saturday night. I mean, you saw it when we started the game and we were bad. And then we even started the second half and we were bad. And then all of a sudden they were like, why don't we put the good players in? And then all of a sudden it's a different team. And they fixed two of the things that have really been haunting them. They haven't been rebounding well. And the Abate goes in there and we saw what he does.
Starting point is 00:05:14 That clip where there's five players. That's an amazing play. If I was an Indiana fan, that clip, because that was the basket where we took the lead that we never gave back was on that play. Just that screenshot. It's five Indiana players. players and Mo by himself and he comes up with that rebound. Twice. And then, you know, the offense, even in the first half, has not been good.
Starting point is 00:05:32 No, it was very stagnant. It was hard to watch. But then when Lowe checks in, he just gets the ball moving and gets the flow going, unlike anyone else on the team. First half was kind of unwatchable across the board. I was very concerned. I mean, both teams looked miserable. And yet they led by seven, which at the time felt like 25 points.
Starting point is 00:05:51 And then, you know, people are going to get tired of me saying, this, but it's true. It's just a different team with Jaylon Lowe. It just is. I mean, I want to give Diabate a ton of credit. I want to Garrison a ton of credit. I thought he played really well. Cam Williams played well. O'way, I thought, played well. But it's
Starting point is 00:06:09 the difference on offense between low and not low, it's a different team. Just a completely different team. Yeah, he not only gets a moving and in the offense the Pope wants, but even little things like that step back he hit, you know, not many guys on the team that can do that. We have no
Starting point is 00:06:25 one else who could do that shot. We have no one else who can break a guy down like that, step back and hit a floater. We have guys that'll try it. We have guys that'll try it a lot. Unfortunately. But we don't have anyone who can consistently do that. He missed two layups, but no one else gets to the basket like that. I know we missed the layups, but like he's just a different dude. And it felt like you were watching him in that second half, find his confidence again. Now, he's going to drive us crazy. He won't drive me crazy because I'm going to accept it. But he's going to drive some of our fans because he missed his layups and he takes some shots where you go but the rest of it's way too positive to get to get past it yeah here lately the offense has been
Starting point is 00:07:07 so bad sure have a few missed layups and any plays if you want i think the whole team was like 14 of 28 on layups we missed the layups were terrible uh it should have been a lot better for kentucky but yeah having those guys back and then as you mentioned uh garrison my MVP pick off the bench playing real well. Yeah. A couple things. Second half, almost no substitutions. I mean, basically, occasionally
Starting point is 00:07:31 would put in, would let somebody get a breather to put in Aberdeen for a minute. But basically he was like, I'm going with Lowell-O-Way Williams Garrison and Diabate, which is a weird lineup, very big lineup. I don't know if you can do that against a lot of teams,
Starting point is 00:07:47 but Indiana was small, so I think it worked. And they weren't hitting threes. Yeah, I'm with the way Garrison and Diabate were playing. I mean, Yellovich didn't get a single minute. I think that was just because there were guys playing so well. Pope said it was a matchup issue. It's interesting because you would think on paper, Yellovich looks like he could play for Indiana.
Starting point is 00:08:06 At least give him a little bit of run. I'm fine with it, though. We won. But no, it shows you how well the other guys were playing. But Chandler didn't really play. Yeah. I mean, Jasper got in early. He only played a couple minutes.
Starting point is 00:08:17 Never went back to that. When he got to the second half, he just kind of stuck. with his guys. Even Moreno didn't really play in the second half much. I mean, but if you think about it, that lineup we saw on the floor in the second half is more like the lineup we thought we were going to see this year, right? If you had asked me at the beginning of the year, who's going to start?
Starting point is 00:08:33 You probably, well, we did start the year with Lowe was not playing, but we knew he'd play Lowe O'Way Garrison Diabate. Now, you probably would have thought maybe Aberdeen instead of Williams, but otherwise that's who you thought was going to start. It's funny, we've now circled back full
Starting point is 00:08:48 to kind of where we were to begin with. And it is weird, too. They're kind of winning with defense. Good. It's throwing me off, though, because of Pope, offense, high scoring, make threes. When that lineups out there, they don't have a lot of shooters, but they've been locking teams down.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I am now all in on this, on Terrence Ogles. I'm going to do something rare, Shannon. I'm going to have a guest on the show sometime this week. Oh, really? Okay. And I don't like guest. Well, I mean, I like the idea of guests. UT Bighead is usually the only one that ever comes on here.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Yeah, you too big, UT Big Hair. But like, I don't like bad. basketball analyst gas because there are because like it's you know whatever it's but I'm going to probably have Terrence Oglesby. Is this a man crush brewing? I think I have a little bit of a Terrence Oglesby man crush because when he talks about Kentucky I feel like like he gets it. And Oglesby said look you at this point you know that this roster was not worth $22 million. He was like it's clear they need a GM and they screwed up the roster. He said this last night on field of 68. But he said, at this point, your team is your team.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Right. So you screwed that up. You fixed that in the offseason. You hire GM. I think he said, whoever decided who to pay these people, they don't have that job anymore. That's fair. That's fair. Yeah. But he said, now that this is your team, he was like, now you got to just do what you got. And he was like, this should be a defensive, dirty dog, rebounding, fouling. Like, that's what got to be and he's like, Mark needs to understand the way he wants to play basketball. He can't play it with these guys. They're just going to have to be what they are. And he said the second half of Indiana seemed like that could be the start of that. I like that analysis. Yeah, it's not what anyone expected. It's probably not what even what
Starting point is 00:10:33 Pope wants to do. But we saw, that's just how Diabate plays. And he has to be on the court. When Quaintiff comes back, he's a little bit more of defense than offense. Otega, when he wants to, has that toughness in him. They're really built for Aberdeen. So we should just be a dirty dog team. We should be, we're going to end up being a cow team. No, that's what we are. Without the athletes. And we're having to wait until March.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Yeah, I mean, you know what? But I think that's what we have to be. It's exactly what we were. I think we have to be a dirty dog team that plays low and away the whole game. That three spot probably alternates between, you know, Aberdeen, Chandler, if he's hot. Williams plays the three sometimes, plays the four. If Garrison's hustling, you put him in. If he's not, you don't.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Like, that's going to be the team. I think our guy Trent Noah, that might be the last we see of him in a start. That's probably it for him. Unless something, would you agree with that? I agree. And it needs to happen. I mean, he just doesn't have that gear that DiBonte, Cam Williams, those guys have. Jasper Johnson just may not play this year.
Starting point is 00:11:41 And that can't be what he thought was going to happen. But I think that team you saw in the second half is the best chance for this team to be successful. These other guys have had a chance. I mean, Chandler's had a chance. I think he's going to play this year. But him being the big time score, he's gone cold. We're just not going to be good if he's our. We're going to have to be winning 67, 60.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Maybe we could yell go as they go down the court. We're going to have to win 67, 63. And it's going to be ugly. And we're going to shoot. Every time we make a three, we're going to thank the Lord on our knees. Like a shot went in, Shannon, yes. You're not going to win too many games that way, though, I don't think. But I think you actually can.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Yes, but the SEC's different this year. None of these teams are really good offensively. I mean, Alabama only scored what, 60 some against Arizona. This is a different year. Tennessee kind of isn't the same. If you told me that Kentucky was going to shoot three of 15 from threes and win by 12, I would say there's no way. But they did.
Starting point is 00:12:46 I agree with you. But I think that's what we're going to have to do. We're going to have to win games in the 70s. Right? We're going to have, like our point total, we're probably going to say if we score 75, you know, because that team can play good defense. It's like the only thing that can, looks like they can consistently do well at this point. I agree.
Starting point is 00:13:06 And Indiana, remember, they had scored 117 their last game against Penn State, against a big 10 team. And even in the loss to North Carolina, You played good defense in that game. You just couldn't score for 10 minutes. I think that's the method to win. And I don't know if people want that, but I think it has to be. And then sometimes you're just going to have to let Jaylon Lowe cook, right?
Starting point is 00:13:25 You're just going to have to let him cook. Somehow our basketball team has turned into our football team. But it's the only chance for us to be good. We can't score. It's the only chance. Like we can't zooms and we can't, you know, we can't do any. We're just going to have to like, you know, Barclay. And I want to talk about Barclay.
Starting point is 00:13:42 But Barclay said that at the story. start of the game. At the start of the game, Barclay was like, they just need to throw the ball against the rim and go get rebounds. Maybe he's right. I mean, you're right. This is a Cal team without the elite athletes. This is like a Cal team. I don't know. This is like a Cal team in everyone's Davion Mint. It's a Cal team without NBA players. I think it is. But you can win a bunch of games like that. I don't know if you, you can't win a title like that, but you can win a bunch of games and I think, Drew, that's just what we're going to have to be. I think so too. I, you know, I don't see them getting in the 90s. Even like last year,
Starting point is 00:14:20 you just, they could hang with some teams. Even when you played Alabama, you lost, you're still putting up points. I just don't see this team being able to score like that. Well, let's say you played like you did against the second half against every team. Okay. How would our record be different? All right. I think we beat North Carolina if we play like that. Fair? Yeah, because they were scoring. Yeah. Defense was about saying. We lose to Gonzaga, even. We probably lose to Gonzaggy either way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Probably lose to Louisville either way. I think the Michigan state's a game if you play like that. That's how I would look at and say, if we've been playing like that all year, we're not going to beat Louisville when they scored 95, and we're not going to beat Gonzaga when they scored 95. But we could have beat, we should. We would have beat in North Carolina, and we'd have had a shot against Michigan State.
Starting point is 00:15:06 That's kind of how I look at it, and I think that's how this year is going to have to play out. I think that at the end of that game, Mark Pope had to probably just had to go back in the last. locker and go, I guess this is who we are. I guess I recruited a team because I think Ogleby's right. You learn from this and say, this, I'll never do this again in terms of how I build a team. But now that I have them, I got to find the best way to win. Yeah, we've been asking, what do they do well? What is their identity?
Starting point is 00:15:34 You finally found something you can hang on to, especially if you're getting minutes like that from Brandon Garrison. Diabate, you're going to get that consistently. But if they're playing as tough as physical as they finally wear Saturday night then they have something. And I'm all in on Jay Leno. He's out there playing with one arm and he's still cooking people. I like what he said after the game about how bad he wanted to come back for his teammates. Because I wondered, you know, does this guy
Starting point is 00:15:54 does he need to come back for them? He's got a bow in his hair. Right? You should put one in your hair. He's got a little bow. Symbolically together. Or what do you call it? A little bun. Okay. Sorry. I said bow. It's not like a little pink bow. It's not like, I guess it's not a bow.
Starting point is 00:16:12 It's more of a bun. That's a different. I don't know why I said bow. Like, dove on the floor? Dove on the floor? If you notice when he runs, he has tried not to get hit on that other arm. He almost runs sideways. But I don't, when he dove for the ball, I scream, no!
Starting point is 00:16:29 Everybody else is like, wow. I was like, no, don't do that. Because if we lose him, forget it. Yeah. Right? Forget it. Kind of remind me of Lamont Butler when he would kind of just let him. He would dip that shoulder a little bit and try to predict it.
Starting point is 00:16:41 He can walk all crooked. He should walk, Shannon, like the humpback of Notre Dame. He should walk with one arm. Like, don't get hit in that arm again. Yeah, don't drive either. Like, just stay back there. Or only drive left, okay? I don't want him driving at all.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Just stay out of the lane. Like, we don't need that. We need some of that driving. We just need bubble wrap around. Give it away. Let him do that. Yeah. 859-28027.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Text machine, 772-7525-254. We'll talk Barkley, Vital, and Merrick-in chicken. Website's still down. Crazy. I haven't done that in a while. Yeah. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Starting point is 00:18:09 Welcome to my new podcast. Learn the hard way. with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes
Starting point is 00:18:25 when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and loss Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,
Starting point is 00:18:47 or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Starting point is 00:19:09 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:19:34 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. For one, it's Ryder Strong and Will Ferdell from PodMeets World. And now the Pod Meets Twirled podcast. We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts.
Starting point is 00:20:35 I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of the show. going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough. Did people not like like what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion of the 50th season
Starting point is 00:20:54 from the final attempts at gameplay to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of ha-hoo. Again, we are experts. So make sure to tune in to PodMeets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to PodMeets World on the IHeart Radio app, Apple
Starting point is 00:21:10 podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. That's right. We do need to be nasty dogs. 859-280-2287. One person on a text machine writes, Matt, you're all's an... I love you all, but you're all as analysis in this game's awful. Well, I think you're awful. You got them. It's all I said that too.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Yeah, I think they're awful. The analysis is dead on. Andy said, you say let low cook. who's he going to cook? The fact that you think he's Fox or Wall is delusioned. I don't think he's Fox or Wall. He's not even close to Foxer Wall, but he's the only player we have who can beat his man off the dribble. The only one. He's the only player we have who can initiate it offense. He's the only player we have who plays point guard who doesn't look like he just discovered basketball when he's the point guard, right?
Starting point is 00:22:04 There were some ugly shots in that first half when he wasn't in. I love Aberdeen because I think he's going to do big things for us. but Aberdeen literally just waves everybody off. And he's like, okay, it's Devin Booker time and then shoots an air ball. Low is our only point guard. And we've played really well this year against good teams twice, true. About an eight to ten minutes stretch against Louisville when we came back from 22 down to get it to one possession. Who cooked?
Starting point is 00:22:35 Low. And then the second half, that's it. So the common denominator is him. Now, I'm making it a given that Diabate plays like that and the O way hustles. Because if that doesn't happen, forget it. But the one thing that we have that no one else can do is run to point like low. So I'm going to be out there with that sword, that meme, fighting the British. You mean John Snow on Game of Thrones?
Starting point is 00:23:03 Or they're all running at him and he pulls the sword out? Oh, is that John? I mean, some of the people run down could have been British, but I think they're White Walkers. So it's not from Braveheart? No, no, no. The one I'm thinking of is John Snow in Game of Thrones. Okay, so I'm going to be John Snow. For
Starting point is 00:23:18 Jaylen Low, because he's my guy. He's my guy. And I don't know why people would be negative towards him, Shamed. Have you ever even held a sword before? In real life? Um, no. Let's start there. Yeah. Let's get you. There's a good chance
Starting point is 00:23:34 I would hurt myself. Yeah. I think you. that shows how excited you are, that you're willing to to wield a sword for the first time. Yeah, and I'll tell you, the last person I was like this with was Antonio Reeves. I was like, come on. Play the dude. Let him cook.
Starting point is 00:23:46 And then everybody, and you, and then all of a sudden, dude was great. I'm not, I don't think he's as good as Antonio Reeves. He's shooting like 16% from three. So I'm not saying shoot all the time. I'm just saying have him in the game. I'll agree with you because in that first half, there's even some text messages that I should probably delete. I was so angry with that offense.
Starting point is 00:24:07 I mean, they were just, it wasn't just Aberdeen. I mean, Chandler would turn down an open three and just go run into the trees and throw it up and miss a layup. No one was taking a good shot. I like Aberdeen's reverse layup that went just straight up in the air, Shannon. That was the worst shot I've ever seen. Well, at least it went up. I mean, it's a start.
Starting point is 00:24:23 He just went straight. He took it as three guys on that too. He didn't go straight into the ground. With Jaylon low flexes, I would say, don't flex. You don't have any muscles. That and it's unnecessary shoulder movement. That's true. Be careful with your soul.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Did you, so you, did you ever listen to Barkley Viteau? No, I wanted to go back, but I liked it. I loved it. Did you, you liked it? Yes, but I thought there was too much split screen. Like, I can hear you talk. I don't need to see you. I don't need to see Dick Vatel kissing Charles Barkley on the cheek.
Starting point is 00:24:54 I like that. I like the kiss because I thought it was a sweet moment. I agree with you, though, when the game is going on, I don't need to see them. Let's watch the game. I didn't need to see them. But in terms of, I didn't care that they talked about other stuff. You know what I mean? Yeah. What else that? Who cares what they say about the game? We see what's happening on the screen.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Yes. I did like that he called Shaq a fat ass. He gave $100,000. That was kind of a nice moment, right? Yeah, I like that. You could tell that those two guys have that friendship where you could say that and not get mad at each other. It's Claire Barkley. Never seen either team play. Ever. Had no idea who was on our team. Like when Lowe came in,
Starting point is 00:25:31 he was like, who's this kid? You know, this is a great. kid I've ever seen. Couldn't be bothered to do his research. I had no but I'm fine with that because you know what? His analysis on our team, Shannon, I think, was better than anyone else's I've heard. Maybe only you will get this reference, but it's like when the WWF put Art Donovan on commentary. Art Donovan. King of the Rain. He's like, how much does this go away? That was basically like Charles Barkley was a crazy reference. And then I think it's good like
Starting point is 00:25:59 it was clear. He and Vital had affection for each other. And that was nice. He was rooting for us openly. Like, don't you agree, Shannon? I mean, if I was an Indiana fan, I'd be living. He literally, in one point said, get in. It's SEC. It just means more. At one point, there was a shot, and he goes, get in.
Starting point is 00:26:20 I didn't hear, but I had multiple friends texting me. Barkley must have money on this game. He had to have been on Kentucky. He had to him. He literally was wishing the ball to go in for us. So I enjoyed it. He clearly loves Rupp. He said it was a religious experience.
Starting point is 00:26:35 when he came in for the first time. Do we get these guys one more game? No, well, they're doing like an NCAA tournament game, like a first four game. So this is their only regular season game. I liked it overall, though. I thought it was good. And he said that Merrick and chicken
Starting point is 00:26:48 was the best chicken he's ever had. He said they must have a little bitty black lady in the back cooking it, which if you could tell Vital got a look on his face. It was like, can I say anything? I don't know if I can say anything. What can I say? Let that one go. Just let it go.
Starting point is 00:27:07 And Charles was like, Charles is the only person who can get away with just saying that. Right. But it's obviously he knows his Lexington and Chicken. So Merrick Inn, websites now crashed. I don't think anyone in the city has thought about eating at the Merrick Inn in a long time. Except Billy Clyde jumped in the pool. Still holding up well over there.
Starting point is 00:27:27 I've been this calendar year. You have? Yeah. Has it been good? You got to go check in on that chicken every once tomorrow. Of course. Is that what they're known for? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:35 I mean, you can get other things, but I've never been a knockout. So now I think I'm going to have to go. And I haven't been in years. That used to be the place. I always thought of it as like an old person place. Right. You went because, you know, my dad's brother, it was the old minister at Creswood Church. And I always knew if we're eating with them.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Big Sunday spot. We're going to the American. Big Sunday stuff. Like I just always knew like, okay, we're eating with Dave and Julia. this is Merrickian night. But now I feel like it's revitalized because Charles gave it the bump. Yeah, it's definitely kind of an older Lexington tradition, you know, after church especially. But they're still doing well.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Yeah, yeah. Got a great patio out there. Okay. I'll throw in on the free pub for America. And the Billy Gillespie thing. That was always the most legendary Billy Gillespie story. Well, that's what I knew it for for many years. So I finally went and actually tried the chicken.
Starting point is 00:28:32 Because I was like, man, things have changed since I used to go to Maricaa with Dave and Julia. Billy's got his shirt off at the American Pool. We never heard, though. Was that story true or not? No, but that one stands out. So you don't think it was true? I had no idea.
Starting point is 00:28:45 Well, Shinaway Pub, I know it was true. I was there. But those two, like, stick out as Billy Gillespie hotspots from the rumors back in the day. Yeah. What we say about Ruby's now, that was the American pool and Shinaway Pub. It was just like a nod to anyone that goes out Lexington and knows you'll see them there all the time. All right. I will take your calls.
Starting point is 00:29:03 859-9-2-80-22-87. after this. I do love the Dick Vitale. Those are two of my favorite people and then being on a Kentucky game was very cool. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Bonds. Not Bows. Yeah. Yeah. Somebody tweeted a picture of what I, they said I thought J. Winloat look like with a bow. I meant bun. A group or fingers, people say also to get there. There you go. Yep. at American.
Starting point is 00:29:37 I've had those before. I feel like it's always hard to park there. They have a lot, but it can get pretty full. You know, what's the happening in place still? Well, it certainly is now. Can't even get on the website. 859-280-2287. I want to give Shannon a real quick shout-out of something I didn't catch
Starting point is 00:29:54 that you did last week. What's up? Your music is always brilliant. I did not catch how brilliant it was, though, last week. When we were talking about Philip Rivers, and you played Old Man River. How did you not get that? I thought that was obvious.
Starting point is 00:30:09 I don't know. I sang the song like Antonio Hill or Antonio Hall, but I didn't make the connection, Philip Rivers, Old Man, that was brilliant. How did I not catch that in the moment? That's all right. So I wanted to make sure I gave you a salute from afar about that one. Unfortunately, he didn't get the win, but he played decent, I guess,
Starting point is 00:30:28 for a man who hasn't been in the NFL in four years. Yeah, I want to talk about him a little bit later. Well, person right. Matt's, we have plenty of shooters. Noah, Chandler, Cam, they all can shoot. I don't know why people think we don't have shooters, because they haven't made them. I mean, again, Calline. Got a lot of shooters that have a lot of makers.
Starting point is 00:30:46 You can tell me all day those guys can shoot until they start making them in games, it doesn't really matter, right? Yeah, what is he said? I don't need you to make them all. You just can't miss them all. Yeah, I mean, Chandler was making them earlier in the year, but he started this game not good. Yeah, and they kind of patted the stats a little against those
Starting point is 00:31:02 teams ranked 300th. And the big games, though, when the lights are on, they have been hitting them like they need to. North Carolina especially. Al, go ahead, Al. Hey, good morning. Good morning. Quick question. Quick question before I get to my point. What is the text number? You say it's so fast I could never write it down. 772-774-5254. Gotcha. Okay. I was talking to a buddy of mine a couple times last few days about this A. My situation and the fact that we haven't signed a high-level basketball recruit. He says if there's a problem with the JMI thing, why are we signing recruits in every
Starting point is 00:31:43 other sport that we have? Yeah. All right. So Mitch spoke about the JMI thing on Saturday. I listened to his comments. I am, I don't feel like I learned a lot, but I also want to, I'm. I'm hoping to this week have some conversations to ask some of my questions. So I'm going to hold off on commenting on what he said.
Starting point is 00:32:09 But as to your overall point, I would answer it like this. I do think that there's a difference in signing run-of-the-mill players and elite players. Those guys are looking for different things. So I think we've seen that the JMI deal with UK can do some positive things for your average guy like on the football team. remains to be seen what can happen with the elite basketball players. But I think like when you're talking about an offensive lineman for football, what those guys are looking for and what the number three player in America in basketball is looking for in their deal are two different things.
Starting point is 00:32:48 Does that make sense? Okay. Yeah, I got you. Now I'm going to make one last point too. I like the way you talk about Jay on low. And I do think we can shoot better once we have effective point guards. play, which is just the old school, taking in the lane, and then kick it out. But we're not getting set up for three-point shots.
Starting point is 00:33:10 We don't have players that can shoot off the dribble like Reed Shepard and guys like that. You're exactly right about that. Exactly right. Okay, thank you. Appreciate it. He's exactly right about that. All right.
Starting point is 00:33:22 We need guys who can go in, draw a double team, kick it out. And because we haven't had guys who can finish at the rim, they never draw a double team. so when they keep, they never get somebody open to kick it out. And that's Pope's whole offense. Like, I mean, they can't get in and do any of the things that he wants to do and the way he coaches without someone that can penetrate and Lowe's the only one on the team that has shown he can do it consistently. Yeah, O-A, teams are just saying, beat our man one-on-one.
Starting point is 00:33:51 Hey, Chandler, can you take your man one-on-one? Hey, Aberdeen, we're waving everybody off, but can you take him one-on-one? And they really have not been able to. Jasper Johnson can take a guy off the dribble, but he's, hasn't shown the ability necessarily to find the open man. And then now Jalen Lowe is the one who seems to be. I mean, that play on back-to-back plays, he drove the lane or three straight plays. One of them he got the layup.
Starting point is 00:34:15 He missed it. But it was an open layup. The next one he came and he kicked it out for a three. I believe Cam Williams made it. I could be wrong. And then the third one, he stopped on a dime and hit the mid-range. And you saw right there why he. why he's so valuable in that little set of plays.
Starting point is 00:34:34 And getting into the lane and kicking it back out from three is really might be what he does best. There's a quote from Pat Kelsey last year when he played against him at Pitt. And he's like, that's just what he's raving about. He's like right when you think you have low, he kicks it back out to a wide open shooter. It's like he has eyes on the back of his head or can make that wrap around pass to the corner.
Starting point is 00:34:51 He's done a few times. He had a great interior pass as well where he kind of, that was it when he kind of went out. That was a great pass. And that's what he does well, but he also needs those guys to catch and shoot and be ready and knock it down around him. Will, go ahead, Will.
Starting point is 00:35:04 Hey, good morning, fellas. Hope you ought to get as weekend as I did. Yes. Yes. But I was going to say, I had to call in and just say I'm really glad I was wrong. I was the guy that called in and said we need to spread it out like Mike Leach. I think we need to bang it in. Be like the Grizzlies of the old days with Zach Randolph.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Screw it everything. That was beautiful basketball, but also the ugliest game I've watched in a while. First half is the worst half of basketball I've watched in a long time. It was awful. But our defense, part of why it was so good, is Indiana, most of their points came at the free throw line.
Starting point is 00:35:42 They shot free throws really well. But we did not give them open looks, and that was a team that makes, appreciate the call, a ton of threes, and we kept them from doing that. Yeah, I mean, they were ice cold early. That was one of the reasons Kentucky's able to stay in the game.
Starting point is 00:35:57 And Wilkerson still had 15 points, but, I mean, he averages 19. they held him below his average, and foul trouble really helped with him. Wilkerson's fourth foul was a huge play. That was a huge play in the game, 18 minutes in the second half. That was a massive play in the game. By the way, back to Field of 68, I think Doug Gottlie came on there Saturday night. He might have been drunk.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Someone sent that to me and said something like Doug's feeling good. I turned it on. I mean, I'm not saying he wasn't sloppy, Shannon, but there was a little bit. At one point he said he was going to kiss Jeff Goodman on the mouth. And he was very chatty. He kept interrupting the other guys. First, how does he have time to do? Is he still coaching that team that?
Starting point is 00:36:37 Yeah, he still does a daily radio show. And he checked into this from like his living room. It was midnight on the Saturday and he's like, Jeff, good mouth, I'm going to kiss you on the mouth. I was like, whoa, Doug. Don't you have a game? What a bizarre thing. Steve, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:36:55 After dark, they warn you. They were after dark. Yeah. Steve. Well, you know, I'm, yes, Jay Leno is without a doubt of this year's ball. Your phone's not working, Steve. I'm sorry. You're going in.
Starting point is 00:37:11 I'm sorry. Trevor, go ahead, Trevor. Hey, Matt, this is Trevor out of London before I get to my question. It sounds like the Merrick Inn might be a great place for Ryan to do one of his solo dinners. Get some of that chick while he's just. Oh, that's a good call. That is a good call. I like that, actually.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Yeah. So my question, I'm actually getting married Saturday to a somewhat Kentucky fan, and she doesn't go as deep-rooted as what I do. And she couldn't understand why I was so excited about this Indiana game. She actually got up and left at halftime just because she wasn't interested. Are there a few games that I could go back and show her in the archives to get her more excited about Kentucky basketball, just Kentucky as a whole? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:56 I mean, you don't even have to go back that far. go to the Duke game last year, the Florida game last year, or, you know, you can go back in time. I mean, there's almost no season where we didn't have at least one good game except for, but I would say the Duke game and the Florida game last year are good examples of how, or the Gonzaga comeback on the road last year, are all good. And even the second half of the Indiana game, right? I mean, but you did, if she doesn't watch a lot of Kentucky, you did give her the worst half of basketball. because Drew, the first half was a brutal half to watch.
Starting point is 00:38:31 Yeah, the second half is actually a great example. You mentioned this on the post game, but that crowd is about as good as Kentucky gets too. You were there. What was that like? It's, you know, sometimes Rubb just, when Rupp is at its best, there's nothing like it. And it happens a couple times a year, these marquee games. We knew this would be one of them. They didn't let us down.
Starting point is 00:38:49 I mean, first half, they weren't happy there for a little bit. Is there any booing? There was some good. It wasn't anything like Nashville. It was kind of a boozed up crowd, but there was some. But then when Kentucky went on that second half run, we saw the best of Kentucky things. You said the bar was really good before. The whole, yeah, there was just an energy everywhere.
Starting point is 00:39:08 Like even, I noticed like people trying to get into Rupp Arena at like 4.30. I'm like the game's three hours away. Well, the volleyball happened too, I think helped a lot. We'll talk more about the volleyball in a little bit. Kentucky families are struggling to access what should be basic essentials, like housing and child care. Those aren't luxuries. They're essentials. And the Kentucky chambers focused on improving access to housing and
Starting point is 00:39:26 child care for all ages and stages of life. They've been here doing this for over a year, and now they're asking us to help. Opportunity Startshere.com. Just go put your name on it. Opportunity Startshere.com. If you want to tell the legislature, hey, focus on housing and child care, Opportunity Startshere.com. I really think it's good that they're doing that.
Starting point is 00:39:48 So if you get a chance, go add your name. We'll take a break. Be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed the game. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.

Starting point is 00:41:44 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win, no matter. what? He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows, without Luca and Austin
Starting point is 00:42:03 Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he
Starting point is 00:42:19 has to give us everything he gives us on the night to night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get to fly. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball.
Starting point is 00:42:34 Like, you go through a training camp with that, I said. You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone. It's Ryder Strong and Will Ferdell from PodMeets World.
Starting point is 00:42:56 And now the Pod Meets Twirled podcast. We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of this show.
Starting point is 00:43:17 I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough. Did people not like it? Yeah. Just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion
Starting point is 00:43:28 in the 50th season from the final attempts at gameplay to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of ha who, ha, ha, who, again, we are experts. So make sure to tune into Pod Meets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to PodMeets Twirl on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. Sad news, Shannon, today about Rob Reiner and his wife. Yeah, I saw that.
Starting point is 00:43:55 It sounds like murdered in their, uh, in their, uh, in their, their home and their son, I think, it's just been arrested. Oh, wow. Yeah. That is sad. That is sad. You know, he was a great director, was in All in the Family, which Ryan is one of his favorite shows, I think.
Starting point is 00:44:15 So that's very, very sad in their home and their son. What an awful story. I mean, well, I'm sure we'll learn more about it coming up over the next few days. One person writes, Matt. I'm glad Lamar Wilkerson did not play well against us. That would have been too much for this fan base. I agree. He started playing well at the beginning. I was like, oh, no.
Starting point is 00:44:37 But then the foul trouble really got him. Fowl trouble shook him up. But it was obvious early. He had the greenest green light. He took one from deep, quick trigger when he'd get the ball. He looked like a guy that was trying to show Kentucky up in that game. It just didn't get the chance. I know we haven't looked good.
Starting point is 00:44:54 But like, I mean, they had a guy with like a mullet. Oh, that was my favorite guy of the mustache. He looked like a guy straight out of the 80s. Who are these guys? Like they, you talk about a team that looked like, where did you get these dudes? You know? And DeVries is pretty good, but even he doesn't even really look the part.
Starting point is 00:45:11 But DeVries is good, but he doesn't look like a basketball player. He looked like you have a little baby fat on him still. Yeah. I mean, he's a coach's son. He was, well, when Wilkerson was out, he was their best player. Oh, yeah, he's good. But it does look like, like they just kind of look like they just, hey, you will play. It helped they shot like 16% from three.
Starting point is 00:45:27 I know a lot of that was the defense, but they... If you just look at the two teams, you would think we were a lot better than them, just on an eye test basis. And I want to be careful not to downplay the win, because I'm very excited they won, but part of me is like, is Indiana that good? Because there was times their offense, especially, some of it was Kentucky's defense, but sometimes their offense just looked like crap anyway. That would have made a loss even worse.
Starting point is 00:45:48 Oh, definitely. If we had lost to that group. Yeah, 859-9-28027. Mike, go ahead, Mike. Thank you. I hope everything goes well, but hear me out on it. I think Holmes is about half right, because I think Pope's in a strange place this year because I think he's teaching a lot more defense than he's used to do it, and I really think they'll get better offensively.
Starting point is 00:46:22 You know that clip you posted last night with Spencer Smith. It shows they haven't been working on offense. I think they'll get better offensively, and I think they'll shoot a little better. I mean, if they can get it up 32, 33 percent from 30, a top 20 offense and I think they've got potential to be a top defense for this is all set. Well, I mean, that's a fair point. They have a lot of, they have a lot of room to improve.
Starting point is 00:46:46 And I appreciate the call. There's a clip. I retweeted a guy named Spencer Smith. He breaks down the offensive videos. And he has this video of one of our plays, but he does it for a lot of them. He just shows how, like, we just run dumb offense. He shows this clip Malachi, Mariana. is supposed to set a pick. He doesn't even touch the guy he's picking. He then runs over and is
Starting point is 00:47:11 supposed to cut, but then he cuts to the wrong place. And then Colin Chandler's in the wrong place. Denzel Aberdeen doesn't move to where he's supposed to. And he's basically like, no one on the court is where they're supposed to be. So no wonder it doesn't work. None of these people are doing what they're supposed to do except Oway. And when you watch that clip, you go, well, maybe if they cleaned all that up. Because there were multiple in the play he showed. there were multiple parts where if somebody does something different, we'd had a wide open layup and nobody did what they were supposed to do. Yeah, it's been very just, like, discombobulated all year.
Starting point is 00:47:44 That's why you have guys trying to go one-on-one and then throw up a layup over three dudes. It also has been killing them with the three-point shooting lately. O-Way's actually been pretty good at catching shooting, but I want to say Chandler's like two for 15 or three for 15 the last couple weeks. Yes. When those guys aren't hitting open shots, it just brings everything down. 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, I have some guaranteed scoop, as Charles Barkley would say, I guarantee it.
Starting point is 00:48:13 All right. I'm ready for this, Shane? I don't trust this person already. Why not? This is 859-319. It's got to be true. Go ahead. What is it?
Starting point is 00:48:23 You don't trust 859-319? No, no. Or 419. 419. Let's first go back. Can I read you the last three tweets from 8593-1-9? Let's hear them. How many cities in the U.S. have over 100,000 people?
Starting point is 00:48:40 Second tweet. Second tweet. Today was for Doug the blue coat. Okay. I like Doug. Third tweet, Strauss is an ad on all Major League Baseball helmets. So you can see this person's provided good information. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:56 All right. Wide range, too. He writes, Jane Quains will play against St. John's 10 to 12 minutes. I guarantee it. all right, I'm writing it down. 10 to 12 minutes. If that's not true, we never trust this person ever again.
Starting point is 00:49:11 You delete their number. You block them. All right. So you're writing down 10 to 12 minutes for Jake and Quentin Saturday against St. John's or 859319 is done. You're done with the show. You don't ever get to communicate with us again. You don't even get to communicate. No.
Starting point is 00:49:28 You don't get to act like you know us. All right. How much you holding them to the 10 to 12 minutes? I mean, if he's not. Okay, so here's a very narrow amount of time. Shannon, I think that is so specific that if he plays between 10 and 12, you've got to give him a round of applause. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:48 I'll even give him a minute each direction. Okay. Nine to 13. Nine to 13. I would say if he even plays at all, I would give him credit. Okay. But there have been other people to say he was going to play. 10 to 12 is so hyper-specific.
Starting point is 00:50:05 that I think he deserves credit if it's 9 to 13. I'm with you. And it sounds like there's been a conversation of like, all right, we're just going to get you out a little bit. We're going to play you 10 to 12. Don't tell your friends that possibly text a local radio show. But he told him. But he told us.
Starting point is 00:50:22 So you're writing it down. 9 to 13. All right. Dan, go ahead, Dan. Yeah. Hey, Matt. It's Dan for Rocky Mount. This team reminds me of the movie back in 71,
Starting point is 00:50:34 the gang that couldn't shoot straight. But don't you think, you know, what I don't understand is that, you know, this team is supposed to have some good shooters, is it the defensive schemes, offensive schemes, or just lack of confidence?
Starting point is 00:50:52 I think it's probably a little bit of all of them, but who knows? But I think I'm going to, we can't keep playing a way to think, well, eventually they're going to go in. If they do, that's fine. But right now they're not. And so I think in that second half, and I appreciate the call, Pope was like, all right, we have to win this game.
Starting point is 00:51:13 What can I do to make us win this game tonight? Forget about everything else. And they did. And I think that's just going to be how we have to do for the rest of the year. You know, we got to stop playing 10 guys, 11 guys, a lot of minutes. Like, it's not working. Play the dudes that are playing well. And if it's ugly and if it's not how you want to play basketball, it doesn't really matter.
Starting point is 00:51:33 We got to win. And you can tell us they're hitting them in practice, but, you know, three for 15 against Indiana, three from whatever is North Carolina. We can't look up and it's February and you've lost some bad games and you're still saying, well, they're supposed to be able to shoot well. If they're not doing it, they're not doing it. Then we'll change it. But right now, Diabate getting in fights, I do think Garrison playing well is a big thing. Because he just adds something that it's not just a defense is. He made some flashy passes.
Starting point is 00:52:02 He did. And he finishes at the rim and he's got some athleticism. You know, Cam Williams' block on that three was awesome. Yep. Garrison's dunk might have been the loudest rub got all night on the alley-oop. That was a great. That should have been an AN1 too. I think he got fouled.
Starting point is 00:52:19 So that's just what we do. And I think it can work. All right, we're going to talk about the volleyball. We hired some football coaches. We're going young. This is like the youngest staff, maybe in college football. We got 26-year-olds on staff. We'll take a break. Be right back.
