Starting point is 00:02:54 I am Matt Jones here in Lexington, Kentucky, where you can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line. 859-280-2-8027. A Viggin auto-glass text machine is 772-724-5-254 in this edition, sponsored by the T-J-Smith Law Office. You call T-J. He'll make them pay. Weird day today. All right, Ryan's out. Drew's out. Shannon is here. So we decided to bring on some people to sit with us. Myron Metcalf of ESPN is here for the first hour. Adam Luckett. We'll talk some football in the second hour. But Myron is in many Minneapolis, the co-host of Matt Myron on Sunday mornings with me. Myron, thank you for joining us on such short notice. Yeah, no, thank you for having me, man. How was I on the list of people you were thinking about calling in?
Starting point is 00:03:44 No, you were the first. Because I felt like I was like seventh a little bit based on the text. I didn't know. You were first. We just had, we knew Ryan was going to be gone. Drew is having, like, Drew, and this has happened to me. Have you ever had the back problems where your back just locks up and you can't move? Drew is having that right now.
Starting point is 00:04:02 So he can't, he can't, like he barely got in here yesterday and like he can't move. And when as soon as Drew was out and I knew Ryan was out, I was like, it's Myron time. Yeah, okay, good. I'm just making sure I was pretty high on this. Hope everybody is good though. Back problems are no joke at all. But glad to be here, man. No, I think he's good.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Now, Myron, of course, and I, of course, do Sunday mornings. We're going to call a bowl game together, Shannon, which we may practice a little bit of today. No, I know you've never done play by play. Byron, have you ever done color commentary for a game? For a football. Color what? Color commentary for a game. Oh, yeah. Okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:37 I've done not football. I've done basketball. I've done commentary. I've done play-by-play. But that's very, that's a different sport. That's true. Much a different. Much different.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Much different. It's much different. More on his resume than you have. I've done games. And I've done a ton of sideline. Are you nervous about the fact that I've never done play-by-play and you've never done color for a football game and we're doing it in a national broadcast? Does that make you at all nervous?
Starting point is 00:05:00 Wait, I thought you told me you had done play by play. You haven't? I thought you said when we first talked that maybe you'd done it before. I mean, I don't think I said that. But the, but the, did you lie to my. I know, I did not lie to mind. Well, now I'm really nervous. I was not nervous.
Starting point is 00:05:18 No, I didn't lie to me. But, but, Maron, I've watched football. And I've seen, Shannon, I've seen plays happen one after another. Are you sure you want to put your good name on the line with Matt? Listen, if they put us on, they know what they're getting. I just, I've been working on catchphrases. Catchphrases and I just hope they stick. Okay, wait a minute, do you have a catchphrase?
Starting point is 00:05:43 I got a couple of them. Okay. Sheddy, you want to test out his catchphrases here? I think I've got one right here. I can play back for him. Let's play one of his catchphrases. All right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Tell your friends about me. Is that going to be one? That's, oh, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, You say that for later in the game, though. That's like what about premier calls. Okay. You don't bring that out early. You don't do the tell your friends about me.
Starting point is 00:06:07 That's like a fourth quarter. Big Western Kentucky play. Tell your friends about me. That's later in the game. That's like a fourth quarter. Somebody makes a big play in a close game. Then you throw that out there. All right.
Starting point is 00:06:28 See what you all. think of this idea. I had an idea, Shannon, that since I have not done it long enough to have catchphrase, that I would give a tribute to all the great announcers by using their catchphrases during the game. Not consistently, Shannon, but like, it's like little, it's like little almost tributes throughout the game. Yeah. You got to be careful about that. Why do you have to be careful? You got to use them lightly. Yeah, you just got, you don't want to overdo it. I would only do it once a game. I would. I would. I would just have to be careful. You got to use them. I would only do it once a game.
Starting point is 00:07:00 So let's say game starts, Southern Miss has the ball. I'll say about Western Kentucky, Shannon, they opened up man to man. Now you're using a basketball commentary. Yeah, I don't know. You don't think I should do that. No. I don't think that. I don't think that's a good idea.
Starting point is 00:07:21 No dipsy-do. No diaper dandies. Well, commentators are really, like, they don't like that. Like, commentators are really protective of their catch phrases. So I do feel like wrestlers are like that. They are. And they don't like you to use their finishing moves. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:38 So you got to be careful about that. All right. So what's one you're, what's one you've considered? All right. So like, let's say there's a big catch. Like call a big catch.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Well, listen, don't make me call things until I'm ready. This is what we actually, this is what we have to do next week. Don't make me call things until I'm ready to call them. But we could just say, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:57 So Philip Rivers deep ball to Shane and Griggs be 31 yards. That ball stuck to his hands like peanut butter to jelly, Matt. No? Oh, I can't wait. This is going to be such a train. Oh, no, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Hold on a second.
Starting point is 00:08:14 That wasn't, that was bad? Was that bad? It wasn't good. Well, I mean, I don't know that it's bad. Hold on. It just felt like a little force. Give me. Do you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:08:26 It just felt like a regular. a joke that would had hit. Yeah. Let me be a little more natural. Give it to me again. Let me be a little more natural. And I'll do it the way I'll really do it again. Philip Rivers drops back to pass.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Grigsby's open. Catches for 31 yards down the sideline. Matt, great hands by that young man. Stuck to his hands like peanut butter to jelly. Better shit. I'll throw it away. I'll throw it away. It's not necessarily the content.
Starting point is 00:08:51 It's the delivery. The delivery was better. The delivery's not good. The delivery was better the second time. I agree. The delivery seemed more natural. The natural the second time. A lot of my catchphrases involve peanut butter and jelly.
Starting point is 00:09:02 Should I change that up? Because that's maybe my problem. Like, I couldn't, like a lot of it's peanut butter and jelly. I think you can only do maybe come up with a new thing. I think you could only do one line, Shannon. Wouldn't you agree with peanut butter and jelly? He can't have every catchphrase be peanut butter and jelly. I've got three per half peanut butter and jelly.
Starting point is 00:09:21 I got to come up some new stuff. This isn't going to go with. I mean, that's just kind of, this is not going to go with. This is already off the rails. Yeah. Five minutes in. You know what? We're going to do a great job.
Starting point is 00:09:33 I'm 100% confident. We're going to do, we're going to do an excellent job. It'll be entertaining regardless. It will be entertaining. Even if I just end up making fun of Myron the whole time, it'll be entertaining. I wanted to bring you on here to talk a little bit in addition to having fun. Talk a little bit about basketball. And so how long you've been covering basketball for ESPN, Myron?
Starting point is 00:09:52 How long has it been? 15 years with ESPN, almost. 20 overall. 20 years. Yeah. Okay. So you probably, you've said before, Kentucky fans,
Starting point is 00:10:06 when you write something for ESPN, isn't it the case, and you tell me if I'm wrong, that Kentucky articles do better on ESPN than anything else? Yeah. I mean, the traffic is, I mean, I don't know what I can say about the traffic.
Starting point is 00:10:20 It's the audience at Kentucky is different than I would say any other audience in college basketball. I mean, I think that's pretty obvious. Is that by substantial margin? Yeah, I mean, I think anything Kentucky related is the biggest. I mean, I think it's almost like cowboys in the NFL. Like, people are always like, why are you always talking about the cowboys on ESP? Because the numbers show that people tune in when you talk about the cowboys,
Starting point is 00:10:49 whether people like it or not. So I think Kentucky is that in college basketball. So the point being, you guys all will end up following Kentucky. quite a bit. When you've watched Kentucky this year as a neutral third-party observer, what has been your conclusion about the team? Well, I mean, we actually were talking about this the other day because we're trying to figure out a trip to Kentucky
Starting point is 00:11:13 and we're trying to figure out kind of what the story is with Kentucky. They just seem disconnected, you know, and I think that to me is probably the most obvious thing in their losses. I think you even saw in the first half early against Indiana. They just don't seem like they're in sync. Like, to me, I don't think in my time covering basketball that I've ever covered a team where you didn't know definitively who your number one, number two, number three options were. Like, I feel like this is a team that feels like there are seven guys that think they're the number one or two options.
Starting point is 00:11:45 And that just never works. Right. No team has ever had that situation in one big. Like at some point, you got to figure out who's the guy. And you also just have to realize your strengths. And I think Barclay did a good job talking about this in the Indiana game. I do too. I thought he's surprisingly for a guy who clearly had never seen them play.
Starting point is 00:12:04 I actually thought he did a good job of pointing out the deficiencies. But I think this is why, and again, the analytics era is incredible. I think we get a lot of information out of analytics that have changed the way that we see basketball. I also think we get obsessed with the numbers sometimes that you can't do the basic things. And it wasn't hard to look at that team and go, wait a minute. Yes, they're missing. shots, but why aren't guys rebounding? Like, why aren't guys getting back on defense?
Starting point is 00:12:30 Why aren't guys making the extra pass? Like, the stuff that I felt like has been wrong in Kentucky is very elementary and fundamental. And I think Indiana and second half, they kind of figure some things out. But it's been disappointing overall. And I think you've got to put that on Mark Pope. He said this is what he wanted. He knew the expectations.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Now you got to deal with it. Do you think it was a poorly assembled team? This is not Major League Baseball. It's not the NBA. It's not the NFL. So my challenge with, poorly assembled, I think it's very difficult in this era to have all the right pieces for any team.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Like Kansas last year had all these great transfers. It didn't work. There didn't work. North Carolina. North Carolina. A lot of teams have put these teams together, and it just hasn't worked because it's more complicated than 15 points per game. I think the numbers have made people nationally go, well, wait a minute.
Starting point is 00:13:23 You can't spend that amount of money and not figure it out. but the teams that I know that haven't worked behind the scenes, and I don't care what, you know, I know Mark Pope and others are saying there's nothing wrong. The teams that haven't worked behind the scenes just don't really vibe with each other. Like I do these stories, Matt. I've done them for 15 years where you go hang out with a team. And the teams that like each other, you can see it.
Starting point is 00:13:43 The teams that vibe together, you can see it. And I just haven't seen that with Kentucky yet. I have a lot of people saying that there's nothing wrong, but I don't see it so far. Now, Shannon, Mark Pope on his show yesterday, he said two things I thought were important. One, he said, this team is still going to be a really good shooting team. You believe that? No, I don't.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Because we're not three or four games in. We're 11 games in, and they still have not shown that they can shoot the ball. He looks like they do, you know, they shoot the ball well in practice, but that's not translating to end the game. I don't care how they shoot in practice. All I care about is what I'm seeing, and it's not good. And then the second thing he said is he's been speaking with a lower tone of voice, recently. And it's led some fans to say that I want my coach to have emotion. But,
Starting point is 00:14:31 Myron, he said yesterday that he yelled so much for a month that his doctors have told him he's not allowed to scream until after New Year's, that he has to, that he is going to, like, ruin his voice. And so that's why he's not yelling is he's not allowed to yell until after New Year's. What's your thought on that? Yeah, I didn't understand that. I mean, the Brandon Garrison, when he yelled at him to get on the bench, that was the first time I think I've ever seen Mark Polk yell. You know, I don't know that I've ever seen him yell in practice.
Starting point is 00:15:06 Like, not like in an anguish, he just yells. Like, you know how I mean, I talk with power in my voice. Yeah. He just yells, I think sometimes when he talks, not in an angry way, just that's how he communicates. Do you think he can go weeks without yelling? I don't think he'll go. a day without it.
Starting point is 00:15:26 I mean, like, he's been very monotone. I mean, Chad, he's been very monotone recently. We can't have a coach on vocal rest. He's not Mariah Carey. No, right? I mean, like, I don't care if he doesn't have a voice at the end of the year. I need my coach doing what it needs. So you want him yelling no matter what, even if he, even if it's going to hurt his vocal cords.
Starting point is 00:15:44 Yes, if that's what it takes, he's getting. Sometimes you, sometimes you need a second opinion, right? Like, guys go and get ACL, say, go find a doctor who will let you yell. You know, there's a doctor out there who will let you do it. There's a doctor who let you scream. Okay. Yeah, there will. I think in general, though, I think with Mark Pope,
Starting point is 00:16:00 and I told you this on the show, he's really smart. Like, he's smarter than any coach probably in college basketball in terms of if he didn't have basketball, he'd be okay. I mean, the guy went to medical school. And I think that's a cool thing. Sometimes, however, without even trying, you can sound like you're trying to be smarter than everybody else. And I don't think Mark Pope is doing that, but his delivery, his intellect in moments like this, I think it can be somewhat of a turnoff to people. sometimes because you're like, hey man, just talk to us, man.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Just talk to us about basketball. Who's the dumbest coach? Who's the dumbest coaching? I mean, it's just us. Come on. Nobody, Shannon, nobody's, I don't think. I don't see people like that. Let me just say, okay, let's not say, that's not true. I've talked to you privately.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Who's the least intelligent? Who is the one that would be least likely to go to med school? Okay, you said, you said Mark Pope went to med school. Which coach of a big time program is least likely to go to med school? Okay, this is not about intellect. Okay, we're going to get an answer. I like this, Shannon. Who's least likely to go to med school?
Starting point is 00:16:58 This is not about intellect. Mick Cronin probably ends up fighting a professor. I would assume, you know what I mean? So like, see, you won't do it. He probably can't. Just say which one is not, can't get into med school. So you want me to name a coach that you just said who's the dumbest coach. And then a week from now, maybe have to call that coach or talk to that coach.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Isn't that what we want? Is that what we all want? That's what we want. I'll let you handle that. You name the coach that you said. I don't know them. You know them. 859, 2807.
Starting point is 00:17:29 No, I don't know. Text machine is 772-74525-4. Could you go weeks without yelling? I think I could, but I don't know if like a Shannon could. I think all of us could. I don't know if you could if you're a basketball. I'm not a yeller. I don't just yell at people.
Starting point is 00:17:46 That would be very, very difficult. We'll take a break. Barry backs, KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsLice comes in. I'm Timbo. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist,
Starting point is 00:18:47 Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
Starting point is 00:19:03 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Starting point is 00:19:20 Are you a good person because you're afraid Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now.
Starting point is 00:19:43 What's up, guys? This is Cliver Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:20:02 Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? This Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:20:24 And I'm C.J. Toledano. in our podcast point game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
Starting point is 00:20:44 We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:21:07 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you. you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Tegi Sports Radio. Text machine 772-745254.
Starting point is 00:21:31 One person writes, Matt, did you practice during Monday night football last night? I did. Shannon, I put it on mute. Yep. And just called about a quarter of the game. How do you feel about it? You got more confidence now? It felt really awkward.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Felt really awkward at first. But as it went on, started to get, you know, I didn't have like Myron there to kind of play off of. So like I'd do it and then there'd be silence. You're talking to yourself out loud. And talking to yourself out loud is weird. It's weird to just talk to yourself out loud. But I got more used to it.
Starting point is 00:22:03 I'm doing one game every night for the next week. So I feel better about it. I mean, but you know, the best commentators, that's honestly what they do. So I was at a game once where Gus Johnson and I was staying at the same hotel before a basketball game that he was calling. and I get ready to drive to the game. And Gus Johnson is in the parking lot calling this imaginary game. I kid you not. He's outside of his car.
Starting point is 00:22:32 He's yelling. He's jumping. Like he's doing, it was almost like no one else was around. He was doing the Gus Johnson calls in voice, standing in a parking lot in the middle of Indiana doing all of his calls two hours before the game. I've never seen anything like it. But like, I think that's how.
Starting point is 00:22:51 locked in you have to be to kind of play that role. Well, and as we said, like they wouldn't have hired me and Myron to be like real announcers. Like, they're expecting us to be, to be us. One person writes, Matt, it's nice to have
Starting point is 00:23:07 Matt Jones and Black Jones on the same show. That's what you called yourself, right, when I was gone. Yeah, when we hang out without you. Yeah, it's a fun show. It's like your parents give you the keys to the house for the weekend because they got to go away. and we got to do our thing.
Starting point is 00:23:23 So, yeah, Black Jones. We're just talking about Al Green and Waffle House. Oh, man, so many conversations about Al Green and Waffle House. One person writes, Matt, we're going to try to get Myron in trouble by talking about the coaches. So I'll ask him one. What's it like actually working with Matt behind the scenes? Is he difficult? All right, there you go.
Starting point is 00:23:43 What do you think? How would you answer that, Myron? Define difficult. What is that? What do they mean? No, you can answer it. Answer it however you want. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:23:54 Matt and I are good. I don't have any issue with Matt. I mean, there was definitely a period where I felt like we would have screaming matches like eight minutes before we had to start a show and we figure it out. But no, we could sometimes, Shannon literally be yelling at each other. And then they go 30 seconds and we turn it off and we'd be fine. Sounds like a perfectly normal, healthy relationship to me. I mean, next week, that can be some of that. Like, that can be a little bit of that next week.
Starting point is 00:24:25 I hope he's a little stubborn, Shannon, in a way that you all aren't. Like, he's a little stubborn. Like, you guys, if I say we're going to do this, y'all are like, we're doing it. Yeah. Myron sometimes is like, we're not doing that. Matt, you're a little stubborn too, though. Wait, a minute.
Starting point is 00:24:41 I mean, that's true. Matt, so we have a running joke, like, before Matt will jump on the pre-show. We'll start to plan the show, but then we always are like, Well, Matt might change all this. Because, you know, Matt likes to be organized and he likes to call the shots and move things around. None of that is true. He's got you.
Starting point is 00:25:00 One person writes, Myron needs to know peanut butter doesn't stick to jelly. It actually sticks to bread. Am I messing the whole thing up? Because he said peanut butter is stuck to jelly. Like, when you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, do you put your jelly and peanut butter together first and then put it on the bread? I got a start from... It's true. I got to start from scratch.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Oh, no. I got a bunch of peanut butter and jelly catchphrases. I got to go back to the draw. I like that all of your catchphrases are peanut butter and jelly. peanut butter to bread. For Louisville's bowl game against Toledo, the Boca Raton Bowl. You can get into the game for free if you bring a can. of baked beans to the gate. Why do they want
Starting point is 00:25:51 baked beans? Because it is the baked bean bowl. It is sponsored by Bush's baked beans. But I don't understand why Bush's baked beans would need more baked beans. Because they want more money. That's why they go out and buy their product and then that gets you into the game. Well, concessions are going to be ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:26:09 They're going to make a lot of money probably off concessions. I mean, I don't know if you want to let people in Florida in for free. I mean, like, this is going to be a whole that's going to be a different kind of crowd, man. Well, I think they probably for Louisville. What's a security situation?
Starting point is 00:26:24 They probably need to get people in the stadium, however they can. But I do like the idea that if you bring a can of beans to the game, you get in for free. But Bush is baked beans only. It has to be the company that has sponsored it. See, there's going to be a problem at the door. Somebody's going to bring some baked beans that are not bushes, and it's going to be a conflict. So you can get into a bowl game for a Sunday. essentially what, $2.50 or I don't know how much baked beans bought?
Starting point is 00:26:52 I don't know. How much is a can of beans out? Two dollars, three dollars? Are you all that rich that you've never been to a grocery store? Is Cassard that successful that you have never been to a grocery store in the last five years? I haven't bought beans in a while. Let's go to Josh. Go ahead, Josh. That's Jish. Man. Jish, okay. Hello, Jish. Oh, yeah. Okay. I want to give a quick happy birthday shout out to Kentucky Unforgettable Darren Fieldhouse. Happy birthday to Darren. Is your name Jish? No, it's a nickname. Okay, gotcha. I was a bet you. All right, cool.
Starting point is 00:27:32 Go ahead. So while I'm on the Fieldhouse topic, Belmont's coming in, man, and they're robbing the state of Kentucky. I feel like Jake Fieldhouse is having a tremendous season at Madison Central. I think it's some, I mean, who's the same? Mark Pope getting next year as a freshman? Well, I mean, it is a good question about who he's getting. I'm not sure that I appreciate the call that the answer is from Madison Central, although that kid is playing well.
Starting point is 00:28:01 But, Myron, do you, are you worried about Mark Pope's recruiting? Still no commitments for next year. I don't know. I feel like there's a divide, right? And I think Kentucky's one of the programs a lot like, I'll say North Carolina, maybe Kansas where there's this idea of even in the portal era, you still want to go after top prospects, right? But I think the way to be.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Carolina is, Kansas is the only team that hasn't is Kentucky. Yeah, I think this year has been unique with freshmen, right? Like the freshman classes have not looked like this in past years. That is true. If you tell me it's a time, we've got to go to a break here real quick. We'll take a break. Be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Okay. personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. This was for me. I know.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I appreciate that. A lot of people don't know this. I bet no one else knows this song, except me and you. What was the name of this? Space Ghost. Space Ghost. And this is Brack. That's right.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Singing about beans. Singing about beans. That's right. Beans, by the way, Myron, $2.39 cents. So you can, and it's only the first 2,000 people that get in to the Boko-Ritone Bowl with $2.39-scent beans. Oh, shoot. Once you get past 1900, it's going to be a fight in that line. People will be skipping.
Starting point is 00:29:34 How did Louisville end up in a bowl game where they're playing Toledo for beans? Like, they were like thought they were going to the playoffs. They're literally playing. That's a classic line, man. Louisville went from the playoff to playing games. Toledo for baked beans. That's true. Is this the old West?
Starting point is 00:29:56 Shannon, what's happened to them? These bowl games are ridiculous anyway. I love them. I have to say, what person writes, does Myron know that his play-by-play guy just learned yesterday that referees wear white hats? Yeah, we got some stuff we have to figure out. No, I think I'm curious, Matt, what the meeting's going to be like. Because, you know, before these broadcasts, I've done a bunch of ESPN games,
Starting point is 00:30:19 There's like a big meeting where everyone kind of walks through the game. I wonder what that's going to be like, you know, how the people with us are going to feel. Well, they're going to have to get over it. One person says, Matt, I've been doing play-by-play for 35 years for my local high school. I cannot imagine doing your first play-by-play game on national radio. I feel like you could do it, but I would be nervous as can be. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:30:46 It's got to make you feel better about the situation. No, no, man. I've done my first play-by-play on ESPN national TV, and it went okay. Like, the good thing about production, I will say this, because I've done games, is we're going to get a lot of help. Like, there are a lot of smart people who are going to be around us who are going to make it pretty easy. Well, Billy got bummed, Shannon. Billy got bumped. So you don't have your stat guy.
Starting point is 00:31:08 He can't go. So I got to, I'm talking to my new stat guy after the show, which I wanted Billy to go, but probably the new guy will know more about what's going on. But you don't know the new guy. Like you feel like you need to trust your stat guy. That's true. I'm meeting him. His name is Kirk. And do you know him?
Starting point is 00:31:26 Do you know Kirk the stat guy, Myron? How would I know him? That's all you have? Is that all he does? I'm not going to give his last name. No, it's his job. He does stats for games. Where?
Starting point is 00:31:40 For who? Who does he work? For ESPN? His name's Kirk. Maybe I've worked with him. I think we'll be good. It's going to be embarrassing for. him if he gets down there and he doesn't know him. Tonight, Tennessee plays Louisville.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Who do we root for, Shannon? Well, I think we got to stay with the conference, you know, the SEC. So I think we've got to pull for Tennessee to beat Louisville. Tennessee's lost three straight games. They're playing at home. This could be their fourth straight loss. I'm kind of with you. I guess I have to pull for Tennessee. Who's going to win, Myron? I'll probably pick Louisville, I think, in this one. I mean, Michael Brown Jr., is pretty good. And I think Tennessee, Nate A-Men has been off.
Starting point is 00:32:22 He's had a lot of up-and-down performances. Like Tennessee's challenges is basically Jacoby Gillespie, Nate A-Men, and if they can't score 40 combined, Tennessee has a hard time with him. They lost to Syracuse. And I don't think Syracuse is great. Yeah, and then Syracuse went to like Hofstra or something,
Starting point is 00:32:37 didn't they? Almost lost to Hofstra. Yeah. So the floor for Tennessee is pretty low, I would say. Yeah, I think Tennessee, that was an awful loss to Syracuse. Joe, go ahead. Joe. Yeah, hey guys, something interesting from the IU game.
Starting point is 00:32:53 When you look at the box score, Kentucky actually lost the rebounding margin. Now, I think we got every rebound that mattered all the 50-50 balls from an effort. Well, a couple things about that, though. You're talking total rebounds. I would say two things. One, you may remember they got like five or six rebounds at the end of the game when they were shooting Desperation threes. You remember in that last minute or two?
Starting point is 00:33:16 But I think the biggest part of that is the free is the, free throws. We missed seven free throws that they rebounded and they only missed one that we rebounded. So that's a six rebound difference right there, really just on free throws, which aren't even really contested. Okay. Yeah, that's fair. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:33:35 Appreciate that point. And one more thing, as you guys were talking, I think you guys have hit the nail on the head with this Kentucky team from shooting to team jelling together or whatnot. Jasper Johnson only played three minutes. Now, I know Pope shrunk the lineup down.
Starting point is 00:33:50 But to Jasper Johnson's credit, I watched him. He was standing on the sideline, coaching his team, clapping, pointing things out. Like, it was really kind of nice to see with Jaland Lo getting that spotlight and really carrying the team through that second half. I actually agree with you about Jasper. You were about to appreciate the call. You were about to say something, Myron, about the rebounds. We got to teach people about the rebounding war.
Starting point is 00:34:12 Like, one of the challenges is we use sometimes, like, this old school terminology. I think what matters most of people talking about rebounding. Like in terms of offensive rebounds, Kentucky actually won that battle. 14-8. But they grabbed 33% of their missed shots, which is a higher percentage than what Indiana did. I think the other thing with the free throw attempts, I think that's how they have to play. This is a Kentucky team that has been great about getting to the line. They got to the free throw line against Indiana, and that put them in a position to win.
Starting point is 00:34:41 And I think the other thing that people are talking about. It was interesting. But Pope yesterday said, we all said after the game in the second half, Kentucky's going to have to play like that. I heard Terrence Ogleby's on field of 68 say Kentucky's got to play like they did in the second half. Charles Barkley said it. Mark Pope yesterday said, Myron, we don't want to play like that.
Starting point is 00:34:58 We did it because we had to to win that game, but we don't want to play that kind of messy, gritty style. That's not what this team is. I kind of disagree with him. What about you? Well, unless he's making a move at the trade deadline, this is what he has.
Starting point is 00:35:13 So I don't really know what that means. Like Kentucky to me is a team that has to play around the basket, try to score and transition. The turnover thing is a big part that people aren't talking enough about. Four turnovers in that Indiana game matters a lot, but you don't have a bunch of shooters. We had four. They had 18. That's a huge difference. You got to be a great defensive team, which I think they can be.
Starting point is 00:35:36 And you got to win ugly on offense. You don't have a bunch of shooters who can spread the floor and beat a Golden State Warriors. Everyone can't do that. And that's okay. And that's what this team is. Yeah. Let's go to 8-5-9. 280, 2287.
Starting point is 00:35:47 Couple open lines. It's a good chance to get in. Let's go to Will. Go ahead and Will. Hey, fellas. Thanks again for taking my call. I was not expecting to get on three days in a row after never calling your guys' shows. So shout out to Billy.
Starting point is 00:36:01 First of all, like three days in a row, I had no idea. I got something to say. I got something to say that. It's only Tuesday. How did you get in three days in a row if it's Tuesday? Because I was going to say, man. Well, I was going to say I was on Friday. that was my first call ever, and I started ranting about Mike Leach.
Starting point is 00:36:21 And you didn't let me finish what I wanted to say yesterday. That was a bad call, yeah. No, it wasn't. Hey, and I also wanted to say shout out Myron. It's good to have a football perspective and an outside perspective talking about UK basketball. Also, further's my Mike Leach point I made on Friday, by the way. Well, you know, he's ESPN's head college basketball reporter. Well, shoot, I thought he did some football.
Starting point is 00:36:44 But anyway, also, I did want to also say I listen to Rick Eyes. the other day. He made the correlation between Dusty May and he wanted a football coach at Michigan, similar to their basketball coach. So I felt validated. But anyway, I did want to say something. I think Mark Hope is having trouble with recruiting right now because he cannot promise a guy that they're going to be the alpha on this team. He cannot promise the guy 35, 30 minutes a game. Why can't you know? Why couldn't he? I mean, why couldn't? Because he, that's his playing style. And that's, I think, what's holding him back. He needs to promise guys that they're going to be the Will's a lot. There's a lot of words that come out of Will's mouth when he talks, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:37:22 You know what I mean? Like, it's a lot. Maybe take a day off, Will. Do you all want, but to it, but one thing he said that's interesting, do you all want your best player to be a freshman in this era? Well, I don't know. I mean, it depends on who the freshman is. I mean, Cameron Boozer is Duke's best player, and they're really good. Darius Aikoff is probably Arkansas's best player, and they're really good. playing well. I think it just, don't you think,
Starting point is 00:37:53 Myron, it just depends on who the freshman is. I don't think you can win if you have a secondary freshman is your best player. But I still think, I mean, Duke was the best team in the country last year. They lost, but their two best players were freshmen. But I think you nailed it, right? Like, we have to, the problem with the rankings is that there are suddenly 58 five-star recruits, which it wasn't that way 20 years ago, right? That's true.
Starting point is 00:38:17 If you get one of the five or six guys. you're talking about, I'm with you. If you have 7 through 28, that's a different ball game. But that was Cala Perry's thing, is in the early Cal years, his best player was 1 through 6. And then in the later years,
Starting point is 00:38:34 it was 7 through 13. And that's a big difference, Byron, between having John Wall is your best player or Anthony Davis or Carl Towns and having BJ Boston is your best player. It's just a different level of skill. Yeah, once you get outside the
Starting point is 00:38:50 top five, you have a better chance of getting somebody in the portal who's as good or better than that player coming in. And that's the challenge. There's five guys you want every year. And beyond that, it's kind of a game is last year in the portal, a lot of those guys have ended up good, but not great. Yaxil has really been the only one of those top seven guys who is leading a great team to success. A lot of these other teams are winning with guys that they kept in-house. And I just think that's kind of interesting. It's going to be interesting to see what works in the portal area.
Starting point is 00:39:26 I think there's going to be a lot of different ways to, what is the phrase, Shannon? There are many different ways to skin a cat. To cook the pie. To cook the pie. Oh, that was something like that. I don't think it's cooked the pie. Isn't there another one about cooking. I think it's skin a cat.
Starting point is 00:39:41 I think there's only one way to cook a pie. I mean, it's in the recipe. Well, what kind of pie we're talking about? I don't think that's one way to cook a pie. But what other way would there be to do besides. make an assumption about the kind of pot. Well, I don't know. You know, we got air fryers and all types of stuff.
Starting point is 00:39:55 You want air fry your pie? There was a time when we didn't have ovens. I don't know. Put it over a fire. There's different ways to cook a pie. I don't think you can make assumptions. I would argue there may only be one way to skid a cat. I don't know how.
Starting point is 00:40:07 Who's skidding cats? I don't know. Yeah. Is that something we're still saying in 2025? It does feel a little bit problematic. But I can't say why. It does. And it feels oddly problematic.
Starting point is 00:40:19 It feels oddly problematic. problematic, but I'm not sure why it does. Maybe we should let that one go. Clayton and Kroom was founded on a simple idea. My mom told me she's getting one of these duffel bags from there for me. for Christmas. Oh, yeah. She was like, there are six colors.
Starting point is 00:40:53 Which one do you want? Shannon, I was like, whatever. Whichever one. It's a leather, right? Like, would you like this level of brown or this? I don't know. You know, like I just, yeah. Do you have an opinion of which brown you want?
Starting point is 00:41:06 No, I thought there was just leather brown. I mean, brown. Yeah, I don't know there are multiple browns. Yeah, there's brown. I don't know. I got to learn how to wrap gifts. I try and watch a YouTube video and I don't know how to do it. Dude, that's another thing.
Starting point is 00:41:19 I don't know. doing the same thing. Just get bags and put the little fluffy paper. There you go. Yeah, but they say bags are informal, though. They say bags are like not, they're informal. That's how people, some people see it. Bags.
Starting point is 00:41:31 Well, versus rapid that gift. I think people expect it from me. They're lucky they get the bag. We'll take a break and be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch
Starting point is 00:43:00 life becomes about wins and losses Steve Burns, Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid because that's two different intentions bro absolutely and that's two different levels of trust I want you to just really be a good person

Starting point is 00:44:13 Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves,
Starting point is 00:44:29 I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
Starting point is 00:44:48 And when IT's friends, stop by like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that I said, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Welcome back. Tadie Sports Radio, 859,000, 280, 27. Text machine is 772-745254. One person writes, I'm going to have to start listening to you and Myron on Sunday mornings. Myron seems like a really great guy that's a lot of fun. How about that? That's nice. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:36 I appreciate that. Now, I get a lot of love and support when I fill in here. So, no, you know, me and BN. I mean B.B.N. I need Myron to not do the catchphrases. I love him and I think they're not going to work. but I do have to say in the similar way that people
Starting point is 00:45:54 want to see a car wreck, I need to hear his other peanut butter and jelly catch phrases. All right, so he gave us one. It was, it stuck to his hands like peanut butter and jelly, which we realized Shannon peanut butter doesn't stick to jelly. Right, yeah. So that one does it work.
Starting point is 00:46:09 All right, so what's your second one? Like, so make a big defensive play. Let's say they get an interception and it shuts down. Right. Lippon, with a hit at the line, stops him for a one-year. yard loss. And that's the kind of stop that comes, Matt, when your team is together like peanut butter and jelly.
Starting point is 00:46:30 Hold on. I'm asking, I'm workshopping this. Like, y'all are just laughing at me. No, but you're just laughing and you're not critiquing. I think when a guy gives a hit, you want it to not be stuck together. It's like powerful. So you want to be like, that hit was as hard as Bob, not stuck to. I feel like you're trying to force in stuck together like peanut butter and jelly.
Starting point is 00:46:56 That's all I got right now. So, I mean, I got a week, but peanut butter and jelly is kind of what I was thinking of. So, yeah. You think you should get away from the peanut butter and jelly? Yeah, maybe like try something different. You know, there's other foods you could use. Like, I don't know what. Yeah, there's a lot of foods.
Starting point is 00:47:11 How about bake beans? There you go. I don't know how to throw baked beans. They're leaking out like after you eat. No, see, they're going to cut it. They're going to cut the game and put on like an Adam Shepter podcast if we do that.
Starting point is 00:47:27 You know, we got to get through the actual game itself. You know, I got to, I'll get better. No, I'll get better. I'll figure it out.
Starting point is 00:47:36 Listen, I would just say to you, this is my only piece of advice. You're going to need to give me advice. Because again, I've never called a game. Just remember, we just have to do our thing.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Just me and you talking. Like, we don't have to be like these other people. because if we try to be like these other people, we're not going to be good. Because they've been doing it their whole life. Matt wants to take phone calls during a play-by-play call of a game.
Starting point is 00:48:02 You can't take a phone call during a game. He mentioned that. And I think, I get the sense that people at ESPN are a little nervous. Like, they don't say it. But when I talk to them about this game, they go like, yeah, you know. Let me give an example. It's third and two. We got a timeout on the field.
Starting point is 00:48:20 Let's go to the phones. Cadence is on. Cadence. What do you got, Cadence? I don't know that. In the middle of, hang on. Let Cadence talk, Myron.
Starting point is 00:48:30 Cadence is on the air. Go. All right, my fault. First of all, Meyer, we're going to have to fix that a Louisville. It's Louisville. You are on Casson.
Starting point is 00:48:44 A second thing I would like you say. Hold on a second. How did you say it? How did you say it? How did you say it? Louisville. All right. So try that, Myron.
Starting point is 00:48:53 Louisville. Louvo. No, he said Louvo. No, he said Louvo. He said Louvo. He said Louvo. He said Louis-Seve. That's how he said.
Starting point is 00:49:02 Louisville. Louisville. Louvo. Love. He can't do it. He can't do it. Love Carnus. How about that?
Starting point is 00:49:10 Love a Cardinals. Is that good, Catenes? Yeah, yeah. That'll be honest. That'll do. Second thing I would like to say, though, with basketball I want to know why
Starting point is 00:49:23 we have a really deep team right really expensive roster our team our roster is considered one of the deepest in the nation right but when you look at other teams like say Louisville for example their team might not be as deep but they have three elite guys that can score with Mikhail Brown and the other two guards
Starting point is 00:49:39 I think Ryan Conley I don't know the other one but he but why can't we do something like that why have we have a system with That's a fair question. I appreciate the call, Cadence. Do you think Kentucky Myron has elite players? Yes.
Starting point is 00:49:55 They definitely have high-level players. Who are the elite players on the roster in your mind right now? Well, even though he's not playing like him, you got Otega. You start there with the SEC. Do you think he's an elite player? I think he has to be. Okay. I would argue it has to be low as well, right?
Starting point is 00:50:12 Low has to be. I think Denzel has to be that. I mean, do you think Denzel Aberdeen is an elite player? he has to be. Like to me, what it comes down to is you don't have a choice if you're going to be good. I think the other thing is, depth is the most overrated thing in our sport.
Starting point is 00:50:28 Once you get to mid-January, you got six or seven guys who are really playing for every team in America. Like, nobody's playing 11 guys, 10 guys. It just doesn't happen. So you've got to figure out who you're six or seven guys out of this group that you can depend on. I agree with you. Depth is overrated.
Starting point is 00:50:42 Jordan, I got a minute. Go ahead. Oh, hang on. Hey, Matt. It's good to hear y'all. Myron's going to have you on. I appreciate it. Real quick, I don't care how Kentucky has to play the win.
Starting point is 00:50:56 I don't care if we win dirty. I just can't see what we did against Gonzaga. And then, myr's going to have you on because you know Matt, with his wrestling love, likes to give a rub, so maybe he can give you one. I appreciate that. You didn't hear that, Myron. You don't like the wrestling phrase, give someone a rub. don't like that. Give someone a rub going out on their back. I don't know what y'all were talking about.
